LegalShield charged me $59.95 on April 9, 2025, I have never reached out to this company before and have no documentation of receiving any kind of services from them. By their own account, they have no membership associated with any of my information, but they did ask my over the phone for full 16 digits of my debit card which I have never had any reputable company ask for as means of identification. They issued the following additional charges to my account:
May 12th, 2025: $34.95
May 12th, 2025: $59.95
On Jun 2nd I received an unprompted refund for $69.90, which according to my bank was a combination of the two $34.95 charges combined and a separate refund of $59.95, leaving all but the initial charge of $59.95 refunded. I never reached out to LegalSheild to initiate a refund because I wasn't aware of these charges until 6/16, this company was charging and refunding my accounts on random dates over the span of almost two months without my knowledge or consent. I disputed the charge with my bank, in addition to a refund I want other consumers to be aware that this company is fraudulently conducting business and attempting to further collect sensitive information. For a company posing as legal advice you'd think they'd know better than to steal from people, but their long history of BBB claims against them shows a pattern of behavior that indicates otherwise.

BEWARE! Earlier this month I signed up for Legal Shield and requested a document review of a 14 page document. Document reviews up to 25 pages are covered under my Legal Shield plan for no added charge. However, during my intake conversation with the assigned Attorney I was quoted a $500 fee to review the document! The document I wanted reviewed was a prenuptial agreement (Prenup) that had ALREADY BEEN PREPARED AND PRESENTED to me. As a separate benefit the Legal Shield contract indicates PREPARATION of a Prenup is covered only after 180 days of Legal Shield membership, but I did not need the lawyer to PREPARE the Prenup, I just needed the lawyer to REVIEW the Prenup document (that my fiancé presented to me) before I signed it. I am highly dissatisfied! I will cancel my membership and move on to a more reputable company.

Legal shield is horrible. I've been paying for 3 mo. Before I actually spoke with an attorney. I had to pay 650 just for a demand letter, I was told they would take my case, they were dragging their feet so I moved on. I really needed help so I tried it one more time and they told me 15,000 + like 200 per hr. I've wasted precious time & resources fooling around with legal shield their services are useless, all their attorneys are horrible, the receptionist are rude, this agency is a scam.

DO NOT USE LEGAL SHIELD!! I was sued for an old debt. Their website says they handle civil defense, they write letters, they get you an attorney. They gave me the one attorney representing all of Arizona and New Mexico. That attorney called me four hours later and the first thing he said was to get a letter written I had to hire him. I explained that I have insurance that covers civil defense. He said my coverage would not cover it. I called Legal Shield. They informed me that clause 14 in their contract under civil defense states that if the attorney feels they cannot prevail then the only coverage is 25% off the attorney’s hourly rate. This is clearly a scam and goes against all of their false advertising. Do not even bother with their services.

I had this service back in the late 90’s and then it was great. It has officially gone downhill tremendously when I came back to my job. I signed back up and I’ve had to service for 15 years. I had to use them recently, and the lawyer who called me back would not let me speak and interrupted me every time I turned around and I got none of my questions answered

I subscribed to LegalShield on and off for over a decade for both business and personal legal services. The business side I've had good experiences with, but the personal side is the reason for this one-star rating review. I called for a consult with an elder care attorney and he was not helpful, didn't understand my situation and actually gave me bad advice which made the situation worse not better. If it had not been his area, he should have referred me to another attorney. He didn't try and understand my situation, didn't ask questions and ultimately gave me bad advice. I'll never subscribe to this service again.

A local hospital sent a bill to collections, when the real problem all along was a coding dispute between the health care provider and the medical insurance company. Basically, they just were not talking to each other, and they decided to stick me with the bill that should have been completely covered. One letter from a LegalShield attorney solved the problem, and that simple solution more than paid for an entire year of LegalShield membership.

Updated on 05/23/2025: I spoke with a representative and nothing changed. The only Atty. you could refer me to gave me “25% discount” (ha!) and wanted to charge me $4000 after that so-called-discount. I found a fabulous Atty. on my own and he charges $750 which is a reasonable amount. Seems to me that your attorneys are taking a advantage of your referrals.
Original Review: Beware. After paying for my membership for 12 years I actually needed a service they say they will cover, landlord/tenant services. I was told I was being referred to a local attorney. I received the referral in 4 days (not one, as they state). I contacted the atty., was told it would be another 7 days before I could speak to an atty.., then I was told it would be 4,000.00 for a simple eviction case. When I originally signed up for this service, I was told it was prepaid legal service. This is NOT a prepaid legal service and they do not provide the one service listed that I needed.

I contacted LegalShield around September of 2024 because I had just written a book about the life of my deceased mother that committed suicide in 1985. I sent in all documentation requested to complete the service that I needed help with. I was being charged a monthly fee of $99 a month in which I paid faithfully each month. I was working with the attorney From Deming Law Firm. He seemed really nice at first and made me feel that he really wanted to help me. As the days and weeks went by, I received no respondence from anyone in the law firm.
I contacted LegalShield and they put me back in touch with this law firm. Someone else picked up and I gave the person my information and identified myself. I was told that there was no such case. My copyrights were never completed, and I had to jump through hoops to cancel my account with this company. I felt very lost because my request was never completed and this company refused to refund me. It was a waste of money, and I would never hire this company again or refer my friends and family. Definitely not a good company and I feel that I was mistreated, and my business needs were neglected.

Overall through the years I have been very satisfied with the services received from Legal Shield. Lately, using the automated website has cause some frustration. Uploading is not user friendly and this makes responses slower. This has been disappointing.

I like that incoming calls are handled in an orderly fashion. It's obvious that an intentional strategy has been created to make sure callers experience is positive. Everyone was eager to assist and the wait time was low. My concern was addressed and forwarded directly to the correct area. My experience with Alan, representing LegalShield, has been very positive right from the start. I was facing a frustrating situation with Audi USA, where I felt I was getting the runaround and wasn't making any progress on my own. It's disheartening to feel like a large company isn't taking your concerns seriously, and navigating that kind of situation has been incredibly stressful and time-consuming.

The attorney at first was not interested in helping me. He said "that's a lot of work for something you are already getting some money for". I gave him all the legal documents I had and told him I wanted a letter written. We are still trying to get the matter settled.

I’ve tried using this service multiple times, and each time has been a frustrating experience. Rather than offering real assistance, they seem more focused on finding technical reasons not to help. Every response I received was dismissive, often based on assumptions rather than an actual understanding of my request. It became clear that there was little effort made to engage with my questions in any meaningful way. If you're looking for genuine support or guidance, I would strongly suggest looking elsewhere. This service has proven to be ineffective and, ultimately, a waste of time.

My experience was Horrible. I had retained their services in St Louis. As the court date approached, I repeatedly contacted them without success. they ignored me and wouldn't take my calls and emails. On the morning of court they called and asked if I still needed representation and regarding what. I will NEVER, EVER contact them again.

If I could not 1 star I would. Friedman, Framme & Thrush is a partnership through Legalshield. This is for the state of Virginia. I pay for them through my employer. When I say they are the worst. From car accident, tenants right to bankruptcy. The only case they handled well was a car accident my son was find at fault. I found out through any the lawyer my son could have won that cause if working would have been put it.
My son was involved in another car accident where he was at a stop light and was hit by a drunk driver. Friedman framme & thrush responses to this case was horrible, their responses to any of they case that requires them to do work on the behalf of their clients is horrible. Especially if you're going through legalshield. If you have a case you know you can win but it's going require them to do some work place go somewhere else. To have money taken out of your check for half service is not worth it!

Their lawyers are incompetent. I'm still waiting for a letter they were supposed to write within three business days, per the legal shield contract. The membership you pay for guarantees letters within three business days. It's been five business days and still no letter. Twice they said "It will be there today," but that didn't happen. If they don't know what "three business days" means and they don't know how to be reliable, how are they practicing law?

Able to resolve the issue without the help of the law firm. I will be keeping my connection with LegalShield and the law firm until I know for sure that the issue will be resolved when the project starts again. I never saw the letter that was developed to send, but I was assured there was one being worked on and ready to send if needed.

I rechecked out to this company and asked for a specific problem that is literally written on their website, I asked two different customer service agents if it was something that could be done, they agreed. The lawyer calls and jump threw hoops and says that isn’t something they can do, but if I want to pay more money they can another attorney to do it and offered me a 15 percent discount. So basically, the membership is to get you in the door to pay more money, it doesn’t actually do what they have listed, which I am sure is fraud, so now I have to find a real lawyer for law shield lol. I asked if maybe I could talk to another attorney, they said that could not be done either.
I called for a refund and to cancel and they tell me, I have to wait 48 hours to cancel (actually longer because they close over the weekend) but I probably won’t get a refund because the contract I sign (I did not sign anything and was not verbally told) that it's non refundable. She then said I shouldn’t cancel because there are other services they could provide and they would send them over, I told her no thanks and she said I'll send them over anyway. Being scammed by a company that’s supposed to provide legal help is distasteful. I also just received an email that they tried to call but I didn’t answer but I'm holding my phone and have no voicemail, (they aren’t waiting for documents because they said they don’t write letter) I will screenshot if you need it.

I thought/hoped LegalShield would be the answer I had been looking for. You send in your supporting documents a firm vets them and if they feel it needs attention they refer you to an attorney(s). What could be more simple? Unless every single lawyer is not taking new clients. I have an incident that has spun off in four directions. The vetting firm I sent all my supporting docs to was very nice and even acknowledged and said "You have been through it." (understatement) but everyone referred was too full to even do an intake and some call back.
The root cause is just not a money making incident it is a career maker, and a morally in very bad faith as well. It's not complicated and I have documents with threats from government employees from his city email addresses. My witness to the issue is a Disability Coordinator & Deputy of Development for the city council (he forwarded me the internal discussions). Seems pretty easy to generate interest but if no one is taking cases you can't even get in an explanation of what was done and by whom. So it has been Legal shield is/has been very disappointing.

I started on 2/28/25 to resolve a matter concerning a credit issue regarding a credit card. I had only received the information a week or two earlier, so I wanted to be proactive in resolving the issue as quickly as possible. I sent the required documents the first time I believe the attorney was Wiley. I spoke with her she stated get more documentation from the courthouse; I did as she requested. We were dealing a statute of limitations matter. She needed that final document to determine in fact it was a matter of statute of limitations. If I got that she could potentially prove it wasn't a valid ask from the other side. We spoke yesterday and everything changed. What was discussed on the phone yesterday was never mentioned. I felt embarrassed as she stood off to the side asking what the problem was.
I'm not an attorney but I'm competent enough to understand some jargon and I know when you've flipped the script on me and was stringing me along all the time and not being transparent. I would like someone to go and review my conversations with this "attorney." I'm pretty pissed that I'm two days away from my meeting and I thought three weeks ago I'd be in a better place. I have dealt with an incompetent individual for three weeks and she downplayed it all yesterday. I believe she was mocking and laughing at me. I was on hold thinking she was getting information for when the call dropped! I had to call back and return to the cue once again, But, Legal Shield has taken money out of my account they got paid I got laughed at!! Now, I'm facing this matter alone I'm right back where I started!!!

They don't have **-speaking lawyers in Maryland, nor are there options for using an interpreter, even through text messages. My English isn't excellent. I wouldn't want to say something and not be understood. They should clarify on the website before purchasing the membership that they won't help you in Spanish, so you don't have to pay and get your money back.

Fortunately didn't end up needing to use any attorneys for my situation. However, their process was very slow and didn't offer much assistance if I had needed. Took over two weeks to respond at times. Additionally, when I had signed up I was told there was a ANNUAL $40 fee when you signed up to be a member. I was a bit confused and shocked when I started being charged $40 each month after the first.
I then contacted their customer service department and they told me to send a email to their supervisor including a refund request and a request for cancellation. After I had sent this email, I had heard nothing after a week. Then, I called their customer service again and they said "You can not pursue a refund because you had wanted a cancellation at the same time you asked for a refund, therefore due to our terms and policy, we can no longer refund you." This behavior is not professional and no client should be treated like this. From my experience, they have chosen to be deceptive and not professional. I would not do business with this company again.

I am so glad that I had this attorney helping me with this intractable problem. If I did not have an attorney which is what I told her, I would still have my home under lien which should not have been the case. I paid the loan in toto yet, they wanted me to call them so that they could scare me but once they realized that I have Legal Shield behind me, they released the lien on my home. however, he refused. He said I have to give him my PlI and membership number in order to be transferred. I said no thank you, l'd rather authenticate in the membership department. Oscar again refused to transfer and disconnected the call on me.
In addition, he interrupted me multiple times while I was speaking even when asked not to. I asked Oscar to get a supervisor and he said none were available. I was forced to call back a third time. I spoke to a female supervisor in the membership department by the name of Breanna in Oklahoma and complained about the IVR issue and Oscar disconnecting the call on me. She showed no empathy or sympathy. I then asked her to remove my existing debit card on file and she refused. She said not until l add a new card on file. I provided my new debit card and she said legalshield doesn't accept prepaid cards (yet their business is called "prepaid legal services").
This is egregious and I'm shocked at legalshield's poor customer service. This gives legalshield a bad look. Moreover, this is not a one-time isolated event, it is a pattern and practice. I have experienced poor customer service from legalshield in the past and filed a complaint with the BBB. Legalshield responded apologizing. Stay away from legalshield.
Regarding your concern, our system does not allow the removal of a card on file without replacing it with a new payment method or updating it to banking/routing information. Additionally, we are unable to accept prepaid cards as a form of payment. We apologize for any frustration this may have caused. The services is not as promised. I was also asked to join the pyramid scam. Yes, I was asked to sell their product. For the fee someone pays, you can search the internet for the same results. There are plenty of free counsel in the USA. The assigned law firm assigned to me were rude and had no interest in my case. I sent them an email before the attorney called and she told me that she had no interest in reading the email until she spoke to me on the phone first. She also stated that she only does referrals and would not represent any person in court. While others may have a had a great experience, I did not on numerous occasions when I was simply looking for advice. I do not recommend them at all.

My first attorney contact was Hans who was condescending and dismissive. He did not even listen to my questions and concerns and he assumed that he had the process for resolution. He ask for a 10 on his review. I was switched to Alexis ** after I requested a different attorney who started out by being dismissive and praised Hans for his years of expertise. When I stated my concerns about Hans she quickly pivoted to trash him and spoke disrespectfully about her colleague. She also requested a good review and proceeded to tell me how to review her online and not through the review process provided by PPL. I am so dissatisfied with the results of this interaction with PPL. I have only needed the services a few times in the past and was very satisfied and that is why I continued to pay monthly for the insurance when needed. Not anymore. My present issue was never really addressed.

LegalShield Has Hit Rock Bottom – Buyer Beware. I have been a client of LegalShield, formerly known as Prepaid Legal, since 2010. I can honestly say that this company has completely deteriorated. I’m not sure who they’re hiring these days, but it seems like they’re bringing in college students fresh out of law school—if they’ve even taken the bar exam. Customer service is nearly nonexistent, and good luck ever reaching a senior attorney because they’re too busy to talk to anyone. The so-called "middle-grade" attorneys are so arrogant that they’ll straight-up tell you, "No one is going to take your case." They only write letters or make phone calls at their own discretion, and if they decide your case isn’t "big enough" or "important enough," they won’t even bother.
My breaking point came when I had two legal matters that LegalShield dragged along for three months. They assigned me a rookie attorney who, by the way he stumbled over his words, clearly had little to no experience—maybe a year at best. He had a cocky attitude and actually told me that I couldn’t experience discrimination based on race, sex, or sexual orientation. He had already profiled me just by my voice and name, assuming I was a middle-aged ** male. When he realized he was completely wrong, he proceeded to question me in a way that crossed the line. I simply told him that I have an alternative appearance and don’t fit the demographic he assumed. Instead of handling the situation professionally, he hung up the phone.
I don’t understand where LegalShield finds these people—attorneys, staff, or customer service reps. I get that it’s an MLM and their representatives are just trying to sell memberships by making it sound amazing, but they need to stop with the false advertising. If they can’t help someone, they should just say so. If an attorney doesn’t feel like taking a case, they should be upfront about it instead of wasting people’s time. And if the company offers a money-back guarantee, they should actually honor it instead of stringing clients along for 30 days and refusing refunds.
LegalShield has turned into a scam. It used to be a solid company, but now, if you need real legal assistance, they’ll assign you an attorney who tells you that suing for $600 or $700 isn’t worth the effort—even when state law is clearly on your side. I was told that my landlord should have given me a reason for keeping my security deposit, per Ohio law, but the attorney was too lazy to draft a simple letter or even ask questions.
To make matters worse, some of the attorneys LegalShield refers clients to demand $100 for a half-hour consultation. After wasting nearly $100 on membership fees alone—and getting absolutely nowhere—I finally had a conversation with an independent attorney who was actually helpful. Ironically, she wasn’t even part of LegalShield.
Bottom line: This company is a complete waste of time and money. If you’ve had a good experience, consider yourself lucky. But for most of us, LegalShield is nothing more than a glorified scam. Buyer beware. P.S. If you come across a lawyer named Alexander (Alex) ** at Maguire, Snyder & Hassy in Columbus, Ohio, avoid him—he’ll either hang up on you or be extremely rude.

I got excellent legal advice from someone who was competent and I'd use again. They jerked me around royally to stop the service, I was very sick and had to jump through stupid hoops so I ended up with 3 extra months I didn't want. If you can sign me up and take my money right away, why do I have to call and follow up by your requirements to cancel. That ain't right. SO never again. Put that in your reviews!!

This was a complete waste of money for me. The two legal issues I needed help with were not covered by the policy. I had no way to determine that prior to signing up. Cancellation process is difficult to find on the website and requires WRITTEN notification. I am attempting to use email. If you call first they will put a hold on the account so you don't get charged while processing your cancellation.
Though we are sorry to hear that a member is choosing to lose their affordable legal services, LegalShield is a monthly subscription service, and our members have the right to cancel at any time. Per our policy, as stated on our website and in our membership contracts, all cancellation requests must be provided in writing. I purchased Legal Shield in hopes I could get the assistance I needed. They assigned a lawyer quickly. However they do not handle my case needs and referred me out to other attorneys. After 4 different referrals to lawyers' offices they can't seem to understand that these lawyers don't handle my case needs. I keep getting the runaround and assigned another lawyer right away, but again they don't handle my case needs. I have a time limit of when I need a motion to be filed and I've wasted so much valuable time thinking legal shield could assist me better. I tried to cancel my plan and get a refund since I technically have not been assisted in the way I need. Was told they don't do refunds, even though there site says they can. They then offered to escalate my concerns so someone can investigate what is happening, and told me to dispute the charges with my bank.

Unfortunately I've been a long-term customer since 2017. The service used to be really good but now it's marred with extremely poor customer service and also referrals to attorneys who are not even available to take on new clients! I've needed legal assistance twice within the past year and the law firms I've been referred to were either unavailable or just non-responsive. The first one, after I called about five times finally responded and said they did not have availability for new clients.
The latest law firm, I've been calling for the past few days (I'm up to 3 phone calls and an email now) and they are not responding. It's awful to pay for a service and not get what you pay for. My advice to anyone going through these reviews and considering this service is just don't do it, it's a waste of money. You're paying them monthly to not get any help when you need it. I'll be cancelling with them and sending them the written request to cancel (you have to write them to cancel... more loopholes just to aggravate you).
Also, I've spoken with two customer service reps this week regarding my latest legal matter and they had the nastiest attitudes! Lawyers having short responses/bad attitudes... Okay that's to be expected, but a customer service rep? They're supposed to deliver CUSTOMER SERVICE. It's a bit ridiculous to be talked down to by someone who I'm calling in to ask for help and for a service that I'm paying for religiously.
Since the company does not care about its customers. I'll take my money elsewhere. Over the years I've referred tons of people to Legal Shield and even thought about applying to be a sales rep for their company, that's how much I believed in them, but not anymore. My recent experiences have been awful. I do not recommend Legal Shield to anyone. Just don't do it, not worth the headache and wasted time.

I spoke to Bob from the Ohio branch of Legal Shield as he is assisting my older sister whom lives in Cali. They needed a card to use for her initial payment as hers wasn't in yet so I told him I will authorize and agree to a one-time payment from mine to help. He assured me it would only be once. Woke up today to another payment being taken, after he called me 2 weeks ago saying my card will be taken off the paperwork as my sister updated them with her new one. They would not have been able to withdraw money if they indeed took my card off their paperwork as told to me so thanks for that lie. When I contacted Bob about the money being taken all he could say was, "I'm sorry, I'm not in the office today."
My advice to everyone is find legal help elsewhere. Legal Shield are liars and thieves and if you are in Ohio and go through them anyways please at least make sure Bob isn't the one handling your case. He is a horrible person who will lie to your face, lie to you over the phone and take your money without caring or trying to make it correct. I will be hiring legal counsel of my own and going after my money and definitely will be getting a much better accredited and higher reviewed lawyer.

I DO NOT recommend Legalshield, In order to cancel you have to write them. However signing up is easy, the lawyers don't help that's even IF they answer the phone. WASTE of money, I may have to call my bank to cancel

The reviews on here must be ones paid for by Legal Shield. The service was terrible. The connected me with an "attorney" that had horrendous reviews on Yelp and Google IN A DIFFERENT STATE. I addressed this with Legal Shield customer service before the attorney reached out. They were useless and did nothing. Friedman, Framme & Thrush **. The attorney reached out shortly after and had no idea what he was talking about. Progressively started getting louder and louder until he was yelling at me, inaccurately quoting things from the evidence that I'd provided him and when he was questioned about the errors told me I didn't know anything about the law - despite having a pretty extensive legal background. Avoid both like the plague.

The worst thing about this company is that I’ve been a member since 2001 and they decided to cancel my contract for my plan because I was a monthly on my bill and they decided to cancel it saying that they sent mails letters out email letters. They never called me or never text me. I don’t look at my emails every day. I don’t look. I don’t get my mailbox every day so I feel they drop the ball and let their clients know that they were late on their bill payment. I would never recommend them to anybody or anyone ever again.

I would not go to sleep without knowing my Legal Shield premium was paid up and that is a fact. I have been a member for decades and have used their services multiple times. Somebody is always messing with you somehow, but when I tell them they will be hearing from my attorney, I mean it. And I don't take s... I straighten people out that mess with me and leave them wishing to God they had no because I have a lawyer. Do you?

The Legalshield lawyer who processed my request provided exemplary service in handling three different traffic tickets that I received. I now have a plan of action to handle them in such a way that I might get them thrown out or have the fines reduced. This all happened in only two days!

I signed up with Legal Shield about a week and a half ago maybe two weeks. The reason I only gave two stars is they won’t update me on what’s going on. They never call me. And I have called and left a message a few times out of three times. I’ve only gotten one call back.

I have tried to send emails to cancel my membership and follow all the instructions and no one will even write me back to confirm that my membership is canceled. Why is it so hard to cancel your membership or to get someone to respond to me I’ve called and they said I need to wait for a confirmation email and I’ve requested it twice now and no one‘s gotten back to me.

Most definitely!! My lawyer, Mr. **, wrote in his letter to PepBoys exactly what I needed him to say. He even advised me to call their headquarters and speak with them directly about my matter. Well it WORKED. His letter which included a copy of the Police Report, and my phone call eventually got the response I wanted: the perpetrator fired and the debt forgiven!!! I finally returned to my Pep Boy location yesterday, and was told by the New Manager, the perpetrator did the same to other customers. Also the New Account the Perp Fraudulently opened for me without my knowledge nor consent is CLOSED! PRAISE JESUS this nightmare is finally over. I am so grateful to Legal Shield for hiring the BEST Lawyers like Mr. **!

My attorney was very knowledgeable and professional. He submitted a letter on my behalf that proved instrumental in winning my case involving an over-zealous and quite egregious online merchant. I required your firm's assistance in showing this unscrupulous merchant the errors of his ways that paid dividends in the form of a full refund that was granted to me. I was in a car accident, and wanted to get help retaining a lawyer. I have used Legalshield to refer me to a local law firm in the past, and never had an issue. Now I tried calling their customer service to see if my account could be reinstated. They said it would take 24-48 hours to take effect. Cool, no problem until I looked at my credit card statement. They charged me 6 times in a 24 hour period! I know the charges are pending, it takes 3-5 business days to process it, but that's just onerous. It's also bad service; I'll be disputing the charges with my credit card company, and spending more money to get a referral from North Carolina Bar Association. Don't use them, they're not the same service they were 4 years ago. In total I was charged around $239.70 so far; I definitely have a case of buyer's remorse.
