What is VisitorsCoverage?

VisitorsCoverage is an insurance technology (insurtech) company founded in 2006 and based in Silicon Valley, California. It offers medical and trip interruption insurance for U.S. visitors, Europe/Schengen travelers, international trips and more. Customers can compare policies from reputable insurance providers and choose the plan that best fits their needs and budget.

How does VisitorsCoverage work?

VisitorsCoverage helps customers find and purchase a travel insurance plan entirely online. Interested customers will first decide on the type of plan they need, depending on where they’re traveling to and what kind of coverage they need (medical, trip protection or both).

To view plans and get quotes, you’ll have to enter the following:

  • Age or date of birth
  • Destination country
  • Home country
  • Duration of coverage (dates of travel)

From here, you can see all available plans, adjust coverage levels and deductibles, review eligibility restrictions and compare plan benefits before deciding on a policy.

VisitorsCoverage coverage

VisitorsCoverage primarily offers two travel insurance products: trip insurance and travel medical insurance.

Trip Insurance

These plans are available only to U.S. residents and cover unexpected costs related to travel interruptions like cancellations, flight delays, missed connections, lost luggage or inclement weather.

Medical insurance for travelers

The type of medical insurance plan you need depends on where you’re traveling to:

  • U.S. visitors: For foreign travelers visiting the U.S., these are available as comprehensive plans that pay out a flat percentage on all covered services or limited (fixed) plans that only cover up to a certain amount for a specific illness or treatment.
  • Europe/Schengen: For travelers to any of the 29 European Union countries in the Schengen area.
  • International: For those traveling to specific international countries outside the Schengen area.

There are other specialty travel insurance products available, including plans for U.S. immigrants, J-1 visa visitors, green card holders and international students.

These short-term medical insurance plans typically cover the following services, though each plan will vary:

  • Hospitalization
  • Emergency services
  • Surgery
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Prescription medication
  • New illnesses and injuries
  • Covid-19 coverage

Routine services like dental exams, regular check-ups and physical exams are not included, nor are many preexisting conditions. However, some medical plans may include benefits like lost luggage.

Add-ons and riders:

You may be able to add on specialty coverage to customize your trip depending on your needs and plans while traveling. Riders can include:

  • Adventure sports
  • Personal property and liability
  • Dental and vision
  • Preexisting conditions
  • Device protection
  • Cancel for any reason

How much does VisitorsCoverage cost?

We requested two quotes, one for a 35-year-old U.S. citizen and another for a 65-year-old traveler, each traveling to the United Kingdom for two weeks.

For the 35-year-old, costs ranged from $23.42 to $42 for the entire trip, with a $500,000 coverage limit and a $0 deductible.

For the 65-year-old, costs were between $91.14 and $163.45 for the same trip. However, for the older traveler, some of the higher coverage limits were unavailable. For example, one plan from Atlas International offered coverage limits of up to $2 million for the 35-year-old but only up to $100,000 for the 65-year-old.

To get a quote for travel insurance, you’ll need to provide the following information:

  • Age of traveler
  • Destination
  • Length of visit
  • Type of plan
  • Coverage limit and deductible

VisitorsCoverage also guarantees its prices will match those found with other agents and brokers or directly through a provider.

VisitorsCoverage FAQ

When should I purchase coverage from VisitorsCoverage?

It’s best to purchase travel insurance from VisitorsCoverage before you leave for your trip, but in many cases, you can buy coverage after you’ve entered your destination country. However, benefits typically don’t start until the day after your purchase date (at the earliest), so you may see a lag in coverage.

How do I file a claim with VisitorsCoverage?

Filing a claim with VisitorsCoverage depends on your medical provider and your insurance provider. In some instances, medical providers can bill the insurance company directly, while in others, you’ll have to pay upfront for services and then submit a claim later on. In either case, make sure to keep all documentation, including invoices, receipts and a copy of your passport.

What is VisitorsCoverage’s cancellation policy?

All plans sold through VisitorsCoverage can be canceled, but policies vary depending on the provider you’ve chosen. Customers can sign into their online portal to see their options for cancellation.

Is VisitorsCoverage legit?

Yes, VisitorsCoverage is a legitimate business that’s won several awards in the travel and tech sectors. It also only works with reputable insurance providers like IMG, GeoBlue, Cigna, Travelex, UnitedHealthcare Global and more.

Is VisitorsCoverage worth it?

VisitorsCoverage is worth it if you value peace of mind when you’re traveling. Most health insurance plans won’t cover you when traveling outside the U.S., so it’s a good idea to purchase a short-term plan while abroad to cover unexpected expenses.

VisitorsCoverage is a comprehensive website that offers a range of plan options with transparent pricing and coverage details, allowing users to get a clear idea of what they’re buying. However, it’s worth remembering that these plans don’t cover things like routine care or preexisting conditions, and you should always read the plan details thoroughly before making a purchase.
