This review covers my initial contact with this company. My interest was in researching their products and services. The site requires that you include personal info to "verify" your relationship to the military. This includes the SSN, cell phone and address. Those with analog phones need not apply. I discovered this the hard way, when USAA attempted to send a text to the landline. There is no voice option. The is also no way to substitute the number to another line.
The help options on the website do not provide a section to address this issue. Further, the VRU (Call system) has no option to reach tech support. Additionally, they insist on you providing a four-digit id number. A number I did not have because they could not send a message to a landline, which was why I had made the calling!
I dialed (0) to bypass the system to reach an operator. I was sent to a home insurance agent. Again, there is no option to reach tech support. After a wait, the agent came online. I explained my concern and I was then sent into a cue for tech support. The tech support agent insisted on me providing a four-digit code to verify who I was. The same id code that my analog phone never received! Addition verification of the other info I had provided in my failed account setup was insufficient. She insisted that I call back!
As a retire NCO, I can only summarize my experience just to get a quote and information about their services as a **. My assessment is that if the obstacles I encountered as a prospect are common then I can only envision greater obstructions and to their services. With such roadblocks I found you just can't get there from here.

I have a major issue in my home that suddenly occurred that requires remediation and potential renovation which could be very costly. It's been nearly two weeks since I processed my claim and the USAA agent, Andy, hasn't bothered to call me back in nearly a week. I have no idea what the status of the claim is or what my next steps will be. I'm really sad because USAA is normally so responsive and helpful and they've completely dropped the ball on this one. I would never recommend them to any friends or family and hope they find a way to rectify my situation.

Like many of the others with one star reviews, I was fooled into thinking USAA cared about military and veteran families, I have been a USAA member for 15 years when I was medically retired due to a combination injuries sustained down range and State Side Service related. I sold my home in Kansas where I was stationed and moved to Texas when I transferred my policy from that home to the Texas home. I stressed I wanted the exact same coverage. Well 7 years later I had supply plumbing lines rupture under my home which USAA covered about Half the cost of that repair, over the next couple months as the ground under the home dried the house settled 4 inches from the front wall to the back wall.
I call USAA to file a claim and was told they don’t cover Foundations under any circumstances in Texas which was not the case in Kansas. Also I never received a full copy of my policy when I transferred the policy. So when I had utilized my customer portal to view what USAA has labeled as Homeowners Policy it’s only a 14 page document, not the full 69 Pages. When you search the Texas Insurance Commisions website the policy that is posted there as the standard USAA policy approved by the insurance commission it does not show the exclusion for foundations either. So now I am from November of 2022 to July of 2023 and I am still fighting with USAA.
Their adjuster came out and told myself and my contractor things in person that they would cover then when I tried to follow up on those things he tells me through the portal that management had to make those decisions and then comes back and tells me they are denied. My sewer lines are broken and he told me they would cover the access and egress at first and is now saying he didn’t say that. He also has said that their plumber came out and did a camera inspection and there were no breaks found so my claim is unfounded.
I was here when their plumber came and he and his helper never even removed the lid on my cleanout. Their report says they did a 30-minute leak check, these guys weren’t even in my house 10 minutes much less on my property for 30 minutes. I hired a third-party plumber to do a static test which the house failed, then paid him to run his camera up my pipes from the cleanout and he videoed three separate breaks.
Then USAA tried to force me into using their contractor to do water damage repairs. Their contractor came out, took measurements, did their inspection and bid the job at 28k as soon as USAA accepted and approved the bid their contractor called me wanting to, “Cash Me Out.” I asked why and their contractor said they couldn’t do the work and it would just be best if I hired someone else to do the job so I bring my Contractor back. He comes in, reviews the job and scope USAA had approved for the water damage and said the reason the other guy wanted to cash me out is because the job couldn’t be done for 28k, his bid was nearly 50k to do the job.
USAA refused to accept his bid until I hired a public adjuster. Now they are willing to pay 48k but still refusing to cover the access and egress for the sewer lines. Which by the way to repair the sewer line with access and egress is nearly 30k. What makes this all even worse are Texas lending Laws that preclude you from doing a CashOut Refinance on your property if it needs repairs. I have been financing these repairs slowly through third-party unsecured personal loans which I am about tapped out on because of Debt to income ratio. I have over 100k of equity in my home if I only financed 80% of the market value, that I cannot touch because the house needs repairs and Texas has those bogus lending laws.

I have been a long time customer of USAA's auto insurance. I bought a home in 2018 and was paying what I thought was a reasonable amount for Homeowners Insurance. Last year I realized that someone had set my personal property protection way too high. This was corrected but it took weeks to receive a refund. This year my bill increased by $162, which for someone on fixed income (disabled vet) is a lot. When I called to inquire about the increase, I was told that this was a, "statewide rate increase". That comment made no sense to me but she insisted that this was reason.
I finally pulled up a letter with my renewal policy to see at the bottom of the letter that the change was due to "Credit-based Insurance Score", so I had to look that up. Now, this made me feel some kind of way. First, to be lied to. Second, I do not have a bad credit score, but according to these guidelines, I'm being penalized, I'm guessing for my lines of credit. No late or missed payments across the board. From my understanding, there are only 4 states that do NOT allow this practice when it comes to homeowners' policies. Unfortunately, mine is not one of them. USAA is the about the dollar not the Military members and Veterans in my opinion.

USAA's outrageous increase in insurance rates, three to four times higher than competitors, shows their greed and disregard for customers. After 23 years with USAA, my homeowner's insurance skyrocketed from nearly $2,000 to $6,000 per year. Their customer service is unresponsive and bureaucratic, lacking genuine assistance. They show no loyalty to long-term customers, prioritizing profit over veterans. Don't be emotionally roped in by USAA's exploitation of military connections. Veterans deserve better. Exercise caution and explore reputable options with fair rates and customer care with companies other than USAA.

My father was a Officer and had USAA insurance so I switched years ago. Higher than my previous insurance, but felt secure. Storm damage in 2020 damaged my roof which resulted in multiple leaks throughout and in attic. Damaged windows, trees down etc., are was declared disaster area. Allcat sent adjusters out who did not even do a thorough inspection and USAA PROPOSED to patch one part of the roof. We had 35 year architectural shingles. Can't patch. Must replace. Beware of this company. I am out of pocket for damaged windows, damaged ceilings, damaged drywall and damaged roof. DO NOT USE USAA HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE.

I bought a home that was built in 2018 and closed November 2022. I had insurance through my mortgage company when one day USAA called me to talk me into switching to their insurance. I kid you not I spent over ND hour on the phone going over the policy line by line against my other policy. When it was said and done I ended up liking the guy I was talking to, he seemed honest enough so I changed my insurance over to USAA even though the deductible was higher as was the monthly payment. 3 months later a storm blew through and took part of my roof off. I made a claim and USAA stated that they would only repair the roof not replace it entirely as suggested by my roofing contractors because the damage was too severe to repair.
USAA sent two adjusters out over the course of 2 months and they still denied my claim. Currently my roof has tarps over the damages that have been there for 3 months already. I am losing shingles every time the wind blows and USAA states the roof had prior damage. Prior damage? Really? On a house that's 4 years old and I JUST had inspected when I closed in November and was fine? This is beyond absurd. They aren't going to make it right but I have nothing else to do but ensure they spend money dealing with me every 15 minutes until I am satisfied. Beware of this company, they are a garbage. I am currently in the process of changing insurance companies as well as banking. It's no wonder USAA is having to lay people off because their business is failing.

With USAA for over 15 years, one claims few months back, they farmed the est out to a third party, rude operator, third party didn’t convey they needed roofer to go over the damage, I’m not able, as I’m disabled. Get the est, and only wants to fix one part of roof, when I asked how they justify this, customer service say loophole, even though my state has regulations. Left a review, USAA calls. They want to fix the issue, said I should hear back within 7 days. That’s been 2 weeks ago, called USAA back. There is no record of anyone from USAA who called me. My advice is USAA home insurance is overpriced, little to no support, slow to respond and failed to call back to fix the issues. Their slogan is we are here to support the men and women of the military, in my experience, they are no different than any other insurance, but pay a higher price.

Horrible experience, completely unprofessional. Applied for insurance a month prior to my closing date. Sent them the requested 4 point inspection, they said they needed a full roof picture (not required on a 4 point). Sent them a drone shot of the full roof, said they needed to be able to see each and every tile to see if it had cracks. They ran me right up to my closing date and had no intention of writing a policy. Why not just say so? I'm exploring legal action, stay away from these unprofessional jerks.

On November 28th, my family and I contacted USAA regarding a fire that occurred in our home. Upon talking to a representative about the fire and asking if we would be covered in this event, they apologized for what we experienced and told me our policy “absolutely covers fire and smoke damage”. They then requested that I submit a list of everything that was damaged in the fire, as well as the amount we paid for them. On December 1st, 2022 I submitted a list with the information they requested. When submitting my list of information, I included everything that was damaged and the cost I paid for each item – as they requested. Only one item on my list did not have a price – a laptop. While I knew the price I had paid on the laptop, I had claimed it in a past claim (years prior) and it was old.
At that point I did not see the value (it was manufactured in 2012/2013), nor cared about claiming it again. I only inserted the laptop because I was told to make a list of EVERYTHING affected by the fire. During the claim USAA became fixated on the laptop. Despite saying I did not want to claim the laptop which is why it was the only item on my list without a price, they would not exempt it from the claim. They stated that in order to process my claim I needed to provide a receipt indicating I fixed the computer after the claim from years ago. Since I do not keep receipts from repair work done I could not provide it. While I tried to rectify the issue multiple times, even had documented proof that the company would need a Repair number to pull up the past repair, USAA would not listen.
On January 3rd they denied my claim and upon appealing it with a 17 page letter showing the extent of fire damage in my home and that we never intended to claim the laptop, they denied us again within two hours of receiving the information. We have been a member with USAA for over 30 years. We have multiple products through them – Banking Accounts, Retirement Accounts, Investment Accounts, College Accounts for my children, Credit Cards, etc.. I have had multiple loans through them which I always paid on time and paid off years early.
Despite being a loyal customer, USAA chose to deny our entire claim over the receipt of one item. They stated while there is no dispute that there was a fire, that the claim in its entirety had to be denied over one item that we never intended to claim. All because one receipt. They couldn’t just accept that we didn’t want coverage for that computer and approve the other items that we actually put values on. To add, after experiencing a traumatic event and then fighting with an insurance company, we were ultimately dropped from our coverage due to being denied.
After this experience I will never do business with USAA again. Imagine losing your home, losing all your valuables in your home and every receipt you may have saved to prove past purchases. How would you go about filing a claim? Should you be denied coverage solely because you can’t proof purchase or repair over EVERYTHING in your claim? While I did not lose my entire home, I did experience a fire, and my claim was ultimately denied over not being able to provide ONE receipt out of over 30 items that I did have receipts for.

My brother said I should get USAA homeowners insurance, so I did, although it was much more expensive than others for me as a disabled Veteran. I put in a claim because my ceilings were beginning to sag in certain rooms. The guy came out, told me it was maybe from water damage, but he wasn't sure, but turned in a totally different report to the office. I received a call today 6 Jan. 2023, after many weeks of waiting to hear from someone, and was told my claim was denied due to poor workmanship on my home. I should have known better than to go with USAA. They always say they are for the military and Veterans, but don't believe the hype, it's not true. All they want is your money. I am now looking for new homeowners insurance with any company but USAA. What a disappointment.

We had a house fire and everything was destroyed including our cars. USAA has been excellent. They responded quickly, and handled us with extreme care. The only thing I would do better is to ensure that all of my policies met the cost to replace. USAA customer service is top-notch, you couldn't ask for a better insurance company to service veterans. If anyone is a veteran and they are with any other insurance company other than USAA, I recommend that they make USAA their go-to for Home and Auto Insurance. I will never have another insurance company unless USAA terminates our contract with them. Also, please ensure you are properly insured, no matter the cost because you never know when you may need to use your Insurance. USAA is Number 1 in my book. As everyone in uniform knows, the DoD provides easy access for USAA to consistently make sales pitches to service members, all with the claim that "We're here to serve you." However, when all is said and done, USAA's bottom line is still the dollar, not the service member. Unfortunately, I discovered this the hard way. Thinking that USAA always had my back, I insured my house with them for more than 15 years, never filing a single claim.
However, my wife and I, along with several other homeowners in our neighborhood, eventually discovered that our tiled master bathroom showers began to leak and show signs of mold. Two of my immediate neighbors filed claims with their own non-USAA homeowner insurance providers and they quickly received the help they needed for repairs. As for me, USAA immediately denied coverage stating that they do not cover any home damage due to "poor workmanship." Upon appeal, rather than consider that workmanship was adequate but the materials used had failed, they simply chalked the bathroom damage up to "poor maintenance," which they also conveniently do not cover.
Now, I don't claim to be the world's smartest person, but it doesn't take rocket science to determine that barring obvious catastrophic damage, any damage to a home can always be blamed on "poor workmanship" or "inadequate maintenance." In the end, my wife and I had to pay more than $20K out of pocket for repairs. Extremely disappointed with USAA homeowners insurance. I'm just glad that my neighbors got the help they needed from their non-USAA homeowners insurance companies for the very same problem we had.

I have been a USAA member for approximately 40 years. Started out with auto insurance and then later property and homeowners insurance. Overall my experience has been positive. A few claims along the way, hail damage to roof, and automotive, mostly glass. Recently had water damage to my house. Moisture/water mitigation part of the repair was excellent. However, for the reconstruction, USAA clearly went with the low bid. They put down tile which came up around the edges. The reconstruction company did remove the tile and gave an allowance for install of new flooring. However they left a lot of mortar/thinset on the floor. I am responsible for removing this as well as purchase of material to replace the floor covering.
Lot of out-of-pocket for me and the project is just getting started. Additionally, for one aspect of the original project I got two different stories from the reconstruction company representative and from the USAA insurance adjuster concerning coverage. Not sure how much of this was miscommunication or USAA cutting costs.

I am a USAA vet and when I reported my first claim after my vehicle was broken into and all my camping gear and other personal items were stolen USAA sent out an investigator not an adjuster. This investigator wasn’t there to help. He was there to investigate me. They treated me like a criminal in a fight me the whole way through. I tried to do everything they asked. Gathering of receipts I could but there’s always excuse that they weren’t good enough. Good majority of my receipts for Digital because I bought my stuff online probably how to do the receipts and I print it out and attached of the paperwork and they try to tell me that those receipts were good enough that they didn’t except him. And everything I couldn’t find receipt for the state sister I have received and they wouldn’t cover it.
During this time I was already going through and dealing with some very stressful situations like my slum landlord trying to evict me for legal reasons and on top of that I was also breaking up with a girlfriend at the time. I tried to address all these these matters and how the adjuster her investigator was treating me and what they were asking was almost impossible, but my agent and her supervisor basically told me I had to do it. Investigator said if I could provide what he was asking for my claim would be tonight.
The manner in which USAA treated me was so awful that I Noticed it was triggering my PTSD. I mentioned That comment and Lucia treat me was triggering my PTSD and I informed her/them of the different symptoms I was starting to feel. One of them being severe depression which I knew suicidal thoughts Were Going to be coming on, I was absolutely shocked when they showed absolutely no signs of sympathy or empathy and continued with their bully like tactics. It was getting so bad now I was being so stressed out that I wasn’t really able to focus on everything that you’re requesting me and I had asked for extensions multiple times when I was coming up to the Time limits.
They agreed to give me an extension but I received a denial claim letter shortly after that. While I was arguing and fighting with him about that I got into a car accident where the paramedics stole all my jewelry and a backpack with very expensive computer in it. I was in my car, so I have filed another claim. Then like a year later while I was still fighting the first two claims department was broken into a new store or damage pretty much everything I owned. So I had to file another claim but by now their treatment was so bad that when it came down to just listing all the stuff that was stolen or damaged I didn’t. My PTSD was full and full fat. No matter how hard I try to focus on filling out these forms, I couldn’t.
I had to reach out request help because when I explained this to my adjuster, she acted like she wanted to help and she literally said this when I started going over my first claim, which I was still within the deadline of two years limit, it was like they used this to their advantage and they denied everything. “No let’s start with most recent and work our way back to the first.”. She insisted, because they wanted to pass that two year deadline. She didn’t try to help me at all.
They bullied me just like they have been. Do you like to do everything over the phone or via online forms so when I asked For a copy of those forms and any phone conversations that they had they said I had to get a lawyer to request those. They knew because he denied my claims that I was left out or anything I ended up having to move out of my place and start living out of car on the streets of San Francisco. I knew I could afford a lawyer and I’ll be had me pants down over a barrel. USAA is a giant charlatan which just takes advantage of military members.

As a military member I ended up getting my banking and insurance needs through USAA. When I bought a home I thought they would be a good option that "takes care" of military members. I had a faulty roof that somehow the VA home inspector missed. Caused severe internal damage to my home. I went to submit a claim with USAA and they refused to cover the roof citing the previous home owner's "faulty workmanship" but agreed to cover the internal damage.
Well there is no point in getting the interior fixed before the exterior or more damage will occur... So I had to grind (this is during the start of Covid) to save up over 10,000 to get a new roof, which during the hard times took over a year. I finally was able to afford to fix my roof. So I went back to USAA for the internal damage. This time around they told me they probably wouldn't cover it because it's been too long, but I can get quotes anyway. Left it completely up to me to find quotes...
So I call around, no one can give me an estimate because it's all "hidden damage" behind the walls/ceiling. To get an accurate number, they have to start busting into the walls and ceilings which will cost money. So I went to USAA to try and tell them I can't get a good estimate without work starting.. they refused to agree. They said I need an estimate.
TL;DR - USAA said they would cover something that would get re-damaged if something else wasn't fixed first. So I had to save myself for a year to fix that something else, and then USAA said it's been too long and they won't cover anything. Also they expect you to do all the leg work for estimates on repairs and when the only way to get an estimate is to start work they refuse to help you.. Complete "figure it out yourself, we will do anything we can to get out of ever forking over a dime to anyone in need" mentality at USAA. Think Twice before you trust them as a military member... they are just as greedy and cruel as any other corporation.

After thirty-five years with State Farm, I switched to USAA, having heard good things about them. Alas, all of the good things were clearly lies or propaganda put out by USAA, itself. Upon filing a claim when an upstairs toilet valve went out and left significant water damage to my home, USAA hired ServPro of Montgomery County, Tennessee. Throughout my unfortunate tenure of dealing with ServPro, I was fed nothing but lies--all of which can be proven through USAA's Claims Communication Center, as well as emails and texts from ServPro--with failed deadlines, missing property, inept workmanship, and, ultimately, ServPro's abandonment of the project, which left my home in worse condition than it originally was when I bought it as a fixer upper twenty-two years ago.
Did USAA provide a moderator when I asked for assistance? No. Did they try to offer any help? No. Did they pay ServPro off, despite the company having failed to honor their contract and finish their work? Most certainly. As a lawyer friend said, USAA and ServPro are clearly in bed together. I only wish I'd known before I became involved with such corrupt, godless individuals as the people I've dealt with at both USAA and ServPro of Montgomery County (the names Clements and Breeden being key ones you should avoid at all costs).
I've since had to engage the help of the Attorney General, BBB, Contractor Connection, and Insurance Commissioner for assistance in the matter--now having an inhabitable house, due to ServPro and USAA--but strongly suggest anyone with USAA drop them immediately, and anyone considering letting ServPro of Montgomery County, Tennessee do any work for them seriously rethink the matter. Multiple lawyers have told me bad things about USAA. Other policyholders, likewise, have said they're only good for automobile insurance, but not homeowner's. For me, unfortunately, having USAA insurance is like having no insurance at all.

My mother, a USAA insured for 62 years, filed a claim with USAA when her condominium flooded due to a leak in a water heater in the unit upstairs from hers. That was more than three months ago. The USAA agent first required us to force her HOA to file a claim with its insurer even though the HOA did not believe it was a covered claim with their insurance. The agent told us her USAA coverage would not kick in until we got an answer from the HOA’s insurance. We finally got a denial from that company, which I immediately passed on to USAA. Since that day, the agent has failed to respond to any of our four emails or phone calls requesting permission to proceed with repairs. The only thing we are left with is silence and frustration.
I am in the process of filing a consumer complaint with the state office of insurance. I have never had such a difficult time dealing with an insurance company in my life. I cannot recommend strongly enough that others avoid USAA insurance. Their agents communicate no concern for my mother or her situation, which has disrupted her plans to move to the condominium. My family has used USAA Homeowners Insurance for decades. My father was a USAF career fighter pilot. My parents have had USAA for at least 40+ years, and never filed a claim for their home. However, my mother now age 94 sustained roof damage during the past year, which also caused water leakage to her ceiling in the south side of her house. The estimate from USAA was less than the amount of 3 roofers in her area, and USAA says now that they will not cover the inside ceiling water damage. They just seem to create one excuse after another. The USAA adjuster named Christoper ** has been very upsetting to work with. Again, my mom is 94 and I have power of attorney to help her. I also have USAA homeowners insurance for my home at a cost $600+ per month. Together with my mother’s insurance USAA is getting nearly $1000/month for insurance premiums.
To say I am disappointed especially not to help my mother cover the cost of roof repairs is a grotesque understatement. The ** advertising that USAA does to make people believe that they are there for military service members is NOT TRUE! Do not be lured into USAA Homeowners insurance because you have a career military service member in your family. It’s a scam and false advertising. Maybe if USAA took care of my mother’s roof damage, and fired Chris **, then I might consider keeping USAA. However, after many decades for both myself and my parents carrying USAA, I now plan to switch both to different insurance. USAA made many thousands of dollars off our homeowner insurance policies ... far more that the roof replacement costs for my mother’s home! Do NOT use USAA for homeowner's insurance. ... USAA is the worst insurance company I have ever dealt with. Our entire neighborhood is having their roofs replaced sure to haul damage. USAA says they don't see any hail damage. Liars. They've been rude, extremely expensive, absolutely unhelpful, and judgemental. The adjuster accused a roofer of causing damage. Nonsense.

15 years ago I moved into a gated community. Texas law requires gated communities to establish a condominium regime to maintain the non-public stress inside the gates, even if the residences inside the gate are single family dwellings. USAA admitted to me it "assumed" I lived in a condo because my address includes "unit x", even though in 2015 USAA inspected my single family home in person due to a roof damage claim. My roof damage was acknowledged and I was eligible for an entire roof replacement. USAA failed to update the year of roof replacement because "the claims department and the pricing department don't speak to one another". It was not until 2021 that both these mistakes were noticed by me.
USAA agreed to refund my overpayment due to roof age but not the overpayment due to misclassification as a condo. USA claims it was my responsibility to know I was misclassified even though nowhere in my policy is wording to let me know I was classified as a condo and not a single family dwelling. USAA has actually admitted its processes are flawed and in the future it will (1) instruct its claims people to talk to pricing people, and (2) put wording on a person's renewal packet so a homeowner can see what classification the one is in. So, be warned. USAA says it will refund my overpayment for the age of my roof, but it refuses to refund the overpayment for a condo instead of a single family dwelling. Even though it makes mistakes, USAA cannot be trusted (as I foolishly did) and will not ensure you pay for the correct type of insurance.

I'm ending my 33 year relationship with USAA. Once a great company dedicated to serving military families, USAA is now just another insurance company cashing premium checks and denying claims. I recently reported a storm damage claim to USAA, hoping to repair or replace my roof in preparation for selling my home. USAA denied the claim; the inspector stated had minimal damage and did not need to be replaced. The prospective for my home were also a USAA members, and attempted to finance and insure the purchase through USAA. However, USAA told them that they could not get financing or insurance unless the roof was replaced.
USAA told me that no roof was necessary, because denying the claim benefitted USAA's bottom line. USAA told my prospective buyers that a new roof was necessary, again because this condition benefitted USAA's bottom line. As a result of these unethical business practices, the sale for my home fell through. I've already moved my car and home insurance to GEICO, which offers better coverage, lower rates, and most importantly, ethical business practices. I'll be moving my personal banking to a local credit union. It's sad to see this once great company, with $36 billion in annual revenue, stoop to such depths just to avoid replacing a roof.

My home’s roof was damaged in a wind storm on 25 September 2020 along with many others in my neighborhood. The inspector that I engaged confirmed that damage to my roof was similar to, but more severe to damage sustained by many of my immediate neighbors. My claim to USAA was denied based on the report of the USAA adjuster who used as his criteria shingle folds in excess of a half-inch in width. My neighbors’ homes were built at the same time as mine using the same materials (Horizon shingles).
Without exception, my neighbors who have filed claims are currently in the process of having their roofs replaced, having been covered by their various insurance carriers. I have requested that the roof be reinspected by a different USAA adjustor as I feel that the criteria he used was very different from the industry standard. I have been denied even this courtesy. This request was made by email on 2/28/2021 and 3/5/21 and then in phone conversation on 3/8/21.

USAA no longer abides by their code of ethics. 11 months ago, we had hail damage to our roof due to significant storms. USAA assigned AllCat Claims. The adjuster lied and said there was no hail damage. I appealed the claim and they denied it again. I hired a public adjuster, who finally got them to admit the hail damage was there, and then they shorted the claim on materials so that the whole roof isn't covered. Things like 20 feet less of flashing and a few less bundles of shingles, no dumpster, etc. They told me that windows with destroyed frames from the hail did not exist, even though there's clearly an extra building with living space in my policy and we submitted photos proving the windows exist. When that didn't work, they said that hail did not cause the damage. Well, what did? A rabid squirrel with a hammer?
After we finally settle this claim, we will be finding a new provider for insurance and any other product we have through USAA. I thought our forever home was protected by buying the best policy from a company that supposedly serves military families. I was wrong. USAA is not what it used to be, and I want nothing to do with a company that preys on military families and veterans by refusing to pay valid claims from honest people and gets fined by the SEC for violation of military lending laws. USAA has forgotten who they are and who they serve.

He was gathering information and working a bunch of other claims at the same time. The roofer and the independent inspector both suggested the roof be replaced. Both warned us that if we had Eerie, State Farm, or one or two others, we would be fine but USAA didn’t stand behind their customers like they used to. I have used USAA to insure my home since 2010. They wanted me to insure my home for more than $100,000 over replacement cost. Even though I argued against this, they assured me that they would provide outstanding coverage because I did not know the cost to replace. OK. In 2014, Arlington, TX had a very bad storm with 90 mph winds that blew off the roof of a building 200 feet away from my home. I called in a claim. The adjuster they hired, arrived at my home by limping out of his truck, getting on his ladder and peering at my roof. Even though I had damage to my patio furniture and roof, he said I had very little damage -- so little damage, he would not write up an estimate because there was no hail damage. I told him I reported WIND damage.
USAA sent me an email stating that my hail damage was less than my $2,000 deductible. So, in April 2020, we had a hail storm, and my neighbor next door and 3 houses away filed hail damage claims, and had their State Farm Insurance roofs replaced within the last month (Sept 2020). I filed a HAIL claim. A person, using his wife's personal phone, called me and stated he was assigned as my USAA adjuster and would be out to examine my roof. The "adjuster" called me on 10/13/2020 to say he was on his way, I gave him my gate code and told him I would unlock my back gate to let him have access to the back of my yard. He told me he would decide where he will examine my home/roof. I explained that I had a roofer in mind, the "adjuster" told me he did not want anyone getting in his way.
Today, 10/15/2020, I received an email from USAA that my homeowner's claim was under my deductible. Don't be fooled with USAA scaring you into paying insurance premiums of more than $100,000 more coverage for YEARS than you need to because they provide "excellent coverage/claims". In May of 2017 we bought our house, in late June, we weekended in San Diego. Came home early Monday morning, to 1890 sq ft of our home was 5" deep in water, as the line busted, actually blasting a hole through the vanity, then ceiling, which caused one side of the entire bath, and bedroom wall. Immediately called USAA, they told me to call a flood company, we went to a hotel for 3 months, while work was done to repair it. We stacked, as best we could, all of our furniture and possessions into the part of the house that didn't get soaked. USAA always paid the hotels (Twas coverage we'd already paid for,) and we'd be in our own home again. USAA's preferred contractor was out here for 2 days, sometimes there were 3 of them assessing the damages, but their outside claim's adjuster, was always way out of line, on the 20% to the lowest they'd pay, and no one here wants to argue with USAA on the costs to repair.
Then, to top things off, USAA paid me to install flooring, in August, I had it installed in late September, then in early October, almost 3000 sq feet of flooring, in ALL the flooded areas, had to be taken up, because we didn't remove the subfloor. We had installed "Premium" flooring, that USAA said right off, tough **, "You chose to pay over and above what we allotted, so, if we pay at all AGAIN, it will be for the old flooring price."
Wait a minute, I demanded? USAA is supposed to be THE expert, neither me or Kathy (My wife,) were never in a flood, never knew anybody who'd been flooded, so how in the world, would we ever imagine all this happening? "Did we know what happens later," I exclaimed? We are $69,000 out of pocket, and the house is still a wreck! Oh yeah, the icing on the cake was when they cancelled me, 980 feet of it is modular, 1,901 approved, site built. They don't insure anything modular. We've been USAA members for 35 years. However, when we recently moved to a new state, we checked out various companies for homeowners insurance. We were flabbergasted to discover that USAA was double what we could find from several other highly rated companies. I'm a member for 35 years and you can't get me a reasonable rate??? They used to be unbeatable. Now they're not even competitive.
It starts when you get your online quote from USAA. I'll use fictitious numbers but they'll make the point. We bought our house for $200k and financed $150k. I wanted insurance for $200k to cover the rebuild cost. There are plenty of new houses around us selling for comparable prices so I KNOW we could rebuild for $200k, especially considering we had $50k in equity in the house. However, USAA knows better than we do that we REALLY needed to insure it for over $400k. That's preposterous. NO ONE that I've talked to feels it would be anywhere NEAR that cost to rebuild. I tried opting out of coverages and taking the minimums on EVERYTHING in their model but it still came to $400k. THAT's why their price is double...They're forcing us to insure it for twice as much as is necessary.
When I called them to discuss this, I explained that I only wanted the minimum insurance to make our mortgage company happy. They said that USAA had decided not to offer that option but that they felt it was better to ensure at actual rebuild costs. (Forget the fact that their rebuild costs are absurd.) I explained that as a customer that's not what I want. If they're going to be customer focused (as they USED to be) they would offer what the customers want, not what THEY decide the customer wants. Of course that went nowhere. As usual I got a "Thanks for being a loyal customer, Colonel. We appreciate your business." Then they continue to ignore the plethora of customer service suggestions I've made over the past 3 decades.
USAA used to brag about getting the JD Powers award for outstanding customer service year after year after year. Check out their website now...You don't see it. What you see are awards for being "The best place to work." So their employees have become their focus, not customers. That's absolutely wrong for a CUSTOMER OWNED BUSINESS, as USAA is. If you fall for the advertising gimmicks, you'll be sorry. Shop around. You'll likely find better deals elsewhere and can CERTAINLY find better customer service.

We recently received a check from them but were charged 21% of the monthly insurance charges for one day of coverage. We have been very please with USAA insurance products and service until about 5 years ago when the service started going downhill and the pricing went uphill. The final straw for us is when we had a mysterious charge of $1009 show up on our homeowner's insurance bill. I called to inquire and they did not know. I spent nearly an hour on hold going from department to department until finally someone said it was old balance from 6 years ago on an auto insurance policy. (We changed from USAA to another insurer at that time. Saved about 40% changing). We had no idea that this balance was outstanding.
I asked if we could set up payment plan, and they said no. I then informed them that I could not pay it now due to the fact that wife was not working due to COVID. I then informed them that we would send our regular home insurance premium, but we could not pay the outstanding fee (which they could not provide a detailed accounting of why we owed it). I paid my premium only. We then receive a notice in the mail that they are cancelling our home insurance the following day if we don't pay the entire balance now. Apparently they put our policy premium payment towards the mysterious outstanding $1009 dollars we owed, and did not credit it instead to our policy premium. They told us that in their notes from our last phone call they informed us that any payments would towards our outstanding mystery debt first. I asked them to please pull up the voice recording of the call and that they would see this to not be the case.
Well, we are still waiting for the phone call back from them. However we could not risk not having home insurance, so we called around for other quotes. We received a lower premium, with lower deductibles for the exact same policy coverage. We are officially USAA free. We went from using USAA for banking, auto insurance, and homeowner insurance to now not using them for anything due to their high pricing and poor customer service. If you have been a USAA member for a long time, please shop around. You will quickly find out that USAA is overpriced. Sometimes paying a little more for better service is warranted. However it is no longer the case with USAA. I have recommended that my parents and siblings also shop around.

I have been with USAA for 21 years, and until 2 months ago, I have always raved about their service, customer service, rates, and how they genuinely take care of their members. I had to file a water damage claim 2 months ago for a dishwasher that leaked. I called USAA and I got a mitigation company to come out, tear everything up, and dry everything out. This part of the claim was paid to the company at without issue.
Then I am told to contact a general contractor to get an estimate for the repair and/or replacement of everything that was damaged. I do as they ask, get the estimate and send it in, and it’s not good enough as they want more details, down to the cost of every last screw that will be used. So, my contractor comes back out and gets more details for them, and it’s still not good enough. My guess is they didn’t like the amount of the estimate. At this point they decide to send out an “independent adjuster” that they basically hire to do an estimate. He completes this and I am told he puts his measurements and the quality of materials into a USAA software program, and it’s supposed to spit out what materials cost in my area. Needless to say that estimate came back at 30% of what the contractor that will actually be doing the works is at. He missed around 60% of the items that need to be replaced or repaired.
They again, tell me that if my contractor can send them an itemized list of materials that can justify the cost that they would pay the difference. So, my contractor spends 12 hours putting together what they are asking for and send it in. I get a call from USAA saying that the amount is still more than 50% of their estimate, and that they need to send another “independent” adjuster out for a 2nd look. That was 5 days ago, and I haven’t heard from anyone. I can’t get a hold of my adjuster, they aren’t answering messages on their app, and I have called the Claims Manager 4 times and he won’t call me back.
My wife, 2 kids, and I have been sitting in a house with no kitchen at all. No sink, no dishwasher, no oven, no countertops...nothing for 2 months with no end in sight. We have to take dirty dishes to friends or family members house to wash them. Nobody from USAA even cares or has any sense of urgency to help us at this point. I was also told by my previous adjuster that it appears I am trying to get upgrades to my house by the price difference!!! The issue is your software program you have is from the 1950’s as far as prices for materials, and the “independent” adjusters you pay to screw your customers over are inadequate at best.

We currently have four customers filing complaints with the state insurance commissioner for USAA violating the Consumer Protection act. USAA uses a program called Xactimate that has the "average" costs for an area built into it. USAA will not allow or pay for any contractors cost that is above this program. We have seen price differences of $2000.00 to $10,000.00 between what USAA says they will pay for and what a general contractor says it will take to do the job correctly. I accounted for the damage to my belongings and I tried to be reasonable in my evaluation of the replacement cost. However, I also knew that my USAA adjuster could have argued that some of my my goods were salvageable or repairable at a lower cost than replacement. I expected a little less than I asked for, but I wasn't sure how much less.
Imagine my surprise when my agent promptly called me back (the day after I filed the claim) and replied that my valuation was too low, and they were going to pay me nearly double what I had requested. I am extremely impressed with the honesty and customer service of USAA. I've tried to beat their prices with some online comparison tools and I never could. From my experience, their low price tag comes with a high value.

Members BEWARE, I was bamboozled in using USAA's preferred contractor for my homeowner's insurance claim. Because I was told by my USAA adjuster, the benefit to using a USAA Preferred contractor is that they have had background checks done, provide a year warranty, and that USAA will stand behind these contractors and service.
In my case, that was all nothing but smoke & mirrors, they provided me with a contractor, Guarantee Restoration located Baton Rouge, Louisiana that has been proven incompetent from start (but nothing was finish). Their workmanship was poor, they damaged personal property, very poor-to-no communication, unreturned telephone calls/emails/text messages, they no-shows, nor follow-up on anything. There have been more than one instances where they just stopped work without reason or communication, sometimes a month or more at a time.
To date, Guarantee Restoration located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana left my home completely gutted and unfinished (no cabinets, toilets, nor floor) because this contractor recently won a State of Louisiana bid to clean office building during COVID19. A job that paid more money. And all the hardships my family, my pets, and I have had to endure due their mistakes and negligence. USAA ends their messages saying, "Thank you for trusting USAA." How could one possibly trust USAA anymore? USAA has been solid for us in the past, but they suckered me in to believing this was a worthy contractor despite our repeated requests for help. The length of this ordeal has dragged out for six months now and trust me when I say there is no urgency to be found from anyone with either USAA nor its preferred contractor, Guarantee Restoration located Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

USAA DOES NOT HELP MILITARY LIKE THEY STATE THAT THEY DO IN THEIR COMMERCIALS!! PLEASE READ THIS AND REPOST!! This home insurance burglary claim started on 2.26.19. A few weeks after filing my uninsured motorist claim for being hit by an unlicensed, and uninsured non-U.S. citizen with only a passport for identification; my enclosed motorcycle trailer was stolen; which was full of tools & camping equipment.
I submitted a burglary claim since it was stolen from my driveway, and I am still fighting for reimbursement & coverage. USAA came back and said, well we have a small, tiny, minuscule clause in my home owners insurance policy which limits their coverage of ANY trailer to $1,500.00; although on the report that I received from them, which listed all the items that I submitted for reimbursement on, they DID acknowledge that the replacement value of my trailer was $6,300.00. SO THEY LITERALLY DEFRAUDED ME OF $4,800.00, AND I CANNOT REPLACE MY ENCLOSED TRAILER. Not only did they ALSO reduce the reimbursement prices for each individual item for “depreciation”, but they ALSO reduced a percentage of the remaining post-depreciation prices by a percentage until each item was repurchased; at which point you have to send in a receipt showing the repurchase of the item for full reimbursement.
After paying my $2,000.00 deductible, they still REFUSE TO COVER my enclosed trailer fully, after almost a year of fighting with them!! I have called and pleaded with them, informing them that I am still searching for a job, and am a 100% service-connected, permanent & total rated, disabled USMC Veteran; and am on a very limited income; and therefore have not been able to fully replace everything that was stolen, since I have only been reimbursed approximately 2/3 of the value of all the items, because I had to pay the $2,000.00 deductible out of my minuscule “reimbursement” amount.

With windows and door claims, USAA is slow. Did our own research, found the estimate from company USAA had sent, too low. Provided our own estimates to USAA. It took 5 days just to get the windows boarded up which were breached and damaged. This should have been done the next day after the incident. USAAs advertising is great. We have been a customer at USAA for years. The reason we decided to go with USAA is because of their TV commercials. You know the ones “Proudly serving the military” blah blah blah. Well, unfortunately we have learned the hard way that it is a scam. After hurricane Michael, our home has had severe damage due to high winds. Roof leaking water inside the house and damaging sheetrock. Well, long story short. We call USAA and they sent a local building inspector. The inspector said the damage was “preexisting.” Yea right. So I call USAA back and requested that they send someone else to inspect the house. A couple of weeks later they sent a forensics engineer to the house. About a week later we received his findings in the mail stating that North Florida and South Georgia only received 39 miles an hour winds.
Well as we all know it was a hurricane 4 when it hit land fall. USAA told us if we wanted to rebuttal then we will need to provide our own engineer which will cost us $1500. The funny thing about the whole thing is that our neighbors two blocks way who are also USAA customers received a new roof on their house. I guess they pick and choose whom they want to help. Word of advice, DON’T DO IT! They do not take care of the military soldiers or their families.

USAA IS A TRUE LOSE - LOSE! I have had USAA for my auto and home insurance, they were fine until something happened where you need insurance. I recently had damage to a single area of a retaining wall on the exterior of my house due to a severe storm that shut down multiple roads and highways in the area. I looked for USAA to help cover the damage, I even went so far to send pictures that day and facilitate a discussion between the insurance adjuster and a contractor who inspected the damage. Against the advice of the contractor USAA denied coverage to my claim costing me thousands of dollars to fix the damage. They cited vague language about the weight of water (there was no water pooling or sitting on the wall, it had just rained as part of the severe storm) or wear and tear (Only a single portion of the wall was damaged. The rest remains intact and strong.).
When I again voiced my concerns in writing they cited the same vague language and talked over me when I asked for further clarification as to how that applies. Ultimately the decision was made by a manager in Texas that has never seen my home, the wall in New Jersey. Both myself and the contractor found USAA rude and difficult to work with. They sell you on paying a premium for insurance but they offer no better coverage than the discount agencies... DO NOT USE THEM, if you want comprehensive and reliable coverage as well as people that work with you and care about you go elsewhere, if you want cheap basic coverage you can certainly get it cheaper from a different company.

Most recently after being with USAA for 13 years and having a home insured through them as well we filed our first claims in those 13 years. USAA finally paid out about $5K for repairs on our first home after what felt like pulling teeth! First they didn't want to pay out a dime! What the hell do I have insurance for? Now after paying out for once, they want to drop coverage on our home... This is insane. We bank with USAA, insure EVERYTHING with USAA, but now we will be moving on to another provider for every product. If you are reading this know that they are not what they used to be. After being a USAA customer for over 30 years, we are still waiting for USAA to resolve a water damage claim with us that happened over four months ago. They have consistently taken ridiculous, unsupported positions that are contrary to even what their own adjuster recommended. They claimed this person was an independent (unbiased) adjuster, simply because he is an independent contractor rather than an employee, even though he was hired by them and they refused to share his findings with us since they were handpicking which ones they wanted to follow.
They closed our file without our permission, claiming we said we weren’t pursuing a claim. It takes days and even weeks to get a return call to the number where we said we could be reached, then when we do connect, they move the bar again, refusing to accept information they told us in the prior call would take care of the issue. Without our agreement, they initially sent us a check for $7,000 for over $30,000 of damages.
After over four months of wrangling when we could actually connect, about thirty phone calls and countless emails, we now are less than $2,000 apart between our legitimate bids (we provided and are asking them to honor the lower one) and the mystery system they use to compute what they say they owe. (Of course, they’ve been saying that all along, as they finally have to concede one item at a time because they cannot support their position.).
The adjuster we have dealt with is rude, illogical, dismissive and doesn’t follow through with what she says. She makes threats and statements that aren’t supported by law, from what I know. We have tried reaching her supervisor, who likewise is extremely difficult to reach. Meanwhile, we have three kids living on concrete floors (the carpet was ripped out the day after the water pipe broke), stepping on nails on exposed carpet strips. After paying this company roughly $150,000 overhead years, they can’t even be bothered to talk to us or our contractor to try to resolve the last issue so we can get the work underway.

I promptly filed a claim with them online and waited several hours for them to contact me. I finally had to call and was told it normally take two days for them to get back with claims. They still stood by the 3rd party audit, billed me (for which I never received a bill because I escrow the account), and canceled my policy as a result. This domino effect increased my premium 200% and demanded I pay in full to reinstate the account. Thomas offered that in the event of a disaster an adjuster wouldn't even care about the inaccuracies rather go by what is there. Camille offered she didn't care to right the wrongs in the policy. I immediately called the property manager, as well as USAA to file a claim. I submitted all required documentation and photos to appease USAA. I was never sent an adjuster or an investigator. My damage was caused due to the wind blowing open a vent, allowing water and excess moisture to enter the home and cause mold. This was explained to me as well as to USAA by my maintenance.
After a month dealing with delays of communication, various messages through both phone and the app, I received a call from my case manager who tried to explain to me why my claim would not be covered. I was upset. I felt like I had been dismissed and not listened to. I asked to speak with a manager. At that time the "manager" came on line and immediately had a defensive attitude. He was dismissive of my concerns and refused to listen to my explanation of what was not making sense. I was angry, yet civil.
We did not reach an agreement that day and I was told that was it. I decided to submit a message through the app requesting the opportunity to have my case reviewed by an appeals department rep. I received a message from the same dismissive "manager" saying that he had reviewed it. I told him, to please put me in contact with a supervisor who was unbiased and who hadn't got his feelings hurt. The next day I received a call from the same guy. He wanted to tell me that he hadn't had his feelings hurt, and to him it sounded like it was me who had their feelings hurt.
This so called manager then explained to me that I would get a lot further in life if I talked to people nicer. I never asked to be contacted by this man, I dont need someone representing USAA to call me and rub in the fact that my claim would not be settled, and I absolutely despise the fact that the manager wanted to call me to just upset me. Unfortunately USAA is no longer a company worthy of trust... A true shame.

Updated on 04/24/2019: I wrote a report earlier about this issue. We have been denied coverage. USAA sent out there vendor Keystone Engineering to our home to determine the "cause" of the damage to our home. Mind you the contractor's estimate was just 10K and have no idea how much USAA spent on this so called forensic engineer to find out how the damage occurred.
USAA did not give the engineer pictures of the Ice dam or the snow at 3 and 4 feet covering everything nor any of the wall damage pictures or water running down the walls. No they sent him two pictures all clear no snow and facia cracks not the ones that we sent about crumbling ones due to the freeze and thaw event. Their professional did not use a moisture meter even though he was told we had water "running" in the walls and leaching out of the walls. He failed to inspect the siding on the water damaged walls. More on that later. Of course we waited for his report and it was in the insurance's favor saying it's a roof leak.
Hearing this we promptly called our roofing contractor, the roof is new November 2018. He completed a letter regarding no leak and that all the flashing is correct too. We hired a home inspector who is also a licensed contractor to complete a review. He used a moisture meter and he found the cause of the leak. Due to all the snow and the freeze and thaw the HardiePlank crumbled in a couple areas which allowed the water damage. Yes an answer. We sent all this proof into the insurance company and crickets. It's a small enough fix. We will fix it and we will sue the insurer for not paying out on this claim.
We live in Oregon and they protect us too. We will file a hearing against the professional engineer's license as well. Maybe he will think twice about doing this in the future. My spouse is a 100 percent disabled veteran and gave all except his life for his country. We went with USAA because they say they care about our veterans. Nope they don't at all!!! Be aware folks be aware.
Original review: We have been with USAA for years and noticed this last year we received a 25 percent increase in our homeowner’s coverage cost. We were told it’s to cover the real built replacement of our home should we need that. We reviewed the prior coverage and the new amount of coverage the difference was 17K more for the rebuild. So I asked, “You are charging 25 percent more for the increase of only 17K of coverage is that right?” Yes. Wow. It should be under 5 percent increase given the percentage of new coverage amount versus cost. Crickets. Three months later we were hit with a horrible winter storm. We had a brand new roof put on our home. It was only 3 months old. The rock on our home was encased in solid Ice and subject to freeze thaw for weeks. When it all began to melt it would refreeze. The frozen snow took forever to leave weeks. When all was gone we checked for any damage and wow we had some.
We called a contractor thinking it wouldn't be much. Turns out it's nearly 10K in damage. We called the claim in on the house and supplied the contractors report. They kept saying "we don't cover foundation issues". Well that’s good since it’s not a foundation issue. We waited two weeks and called back. They said they would send out an engineer to view the damage. That was another two weeks. Now it’s been a month’s time. Still damage still nothing happening. I live in Oregon so I will call my state's insurance commission and file a complaint to get this thing moving along. I noticed others on here are from Oregon do the same. Oregon can yank there right to sell insurance in Oregon if they receive enough complaints.

Last year, I had a homeowners loss, not a large claim in any manner. They insisted on using their vendors -some miles away- from my town. Could not understand why this vendor, since my town is large and has many licensed contractors and homeowners repair professionals. Anyway, after months, USAA came up with some off the wall price and they sent their estimate and check to their vendor!
Always, thought the policyholders are to get any checks issued on their claim, unless they sign papers directing otherwise. And insisting that I do business with their vendor by sending my claim checks to their vendors, sounds it may be quite illegal. Something fishy going on, here. Does not the Insurance Companies have a Legal Fiduciary Relationship with their policyholders? Don't they owe a Fiduciary Duty to send the policyholder any checks or payments made on their policies?
I could not get the vendor to stop by house and answer any questions, show any samples of flooring, etc., that was suppose to be like what was priced or what they may decide to install. Stated that until I sign a mailed authorization form for them to do the work, would not come by or bring samples. The policyholder surely has a right to see what is the quality and grade of flooring they estimate and plan to install. The paint sample, etc. would be nice. What is estimated vs what was lost vs what is being installed, is questionable and needs to be supported by other contractors. Some choices made by the homeowners.
Heck, their flooring samples may be found to be a cheaper grade that the policyholder had and overpriced for that grade. The homeowner may be able to buy it for much less, elsewhere while getting a better grade of flooring. The reason that I do not want to give authority to do the work is because not sure what they are doing and prices they will be charging for any flooring installed. I may want to upgrade to something else, but can not get any prices from the vendor without first giving them the authority to do the work and charge any price they wish.
It is lot like "add-on" items, added to the new car sticker price by new car dealers. (Except you see these overpriced items) But, I can not see any prices from the vendor. Any new auto buyers can finds that the nitrogen filled tires they are charging $200.00 for can be gotten filled free from Costco, any day of the week. The $1200.00 window tint price add-on can be gotten all over town for $200.00
Anyway, the claim has not worked to my satisfaction and my home cannot be put back to its original condition. Sadly, after all these years with USAA and no prior homeowners claims! My House has no liens or monies owned on it. The vendor is not the policyholder. My opinion or another contractor opinion does not matter to USAA. They are married to their vendors, be it auto windshields prices or homeowners repairs.
The heck with what the free market is charging to do the repairs. They set low ball prices and get some vendors agree to do the work based up the number of claims checks that will have their names on them. Their vendors are mailed the checks. A nice quid pro quo relationship with their vendors. They come up with a price that no free market contractor could afford to do the repairs, after inspection of the damages.
It is my understand that USAA sets the prices that will be paid on their claims, not the free market. Their policyholders are just the innocent victims in their questionable and cozy business arrangements with their vendors. Appears, the insureds are to be damned, it is USAA's vendors that really matters. Their policyholder's monies are just payments promised to their vendors. Eventually, I want to have my home repaired and back to the state -it was- before the loss. Lets hope.
So far, USAA appears to have washed their hands with the claim. They paid the claim based on their prices and their vendor has the check. The homeowner is left out in the cold when their policyholders are not in the loop. Nor, is there a fiduciary relationship with USAA and their policyholders, in my case. It is sad that a loyal policyholder has to write a critique of their carrier, after they purchased the insurance base upon good faith.

I've had USAA for upwards of 20 plus years. My father before me had USAA as well. I've never had problem with Auto Claims for a few dings and glass replacement with no issues. USAA is not the cheapest around and I always came to believe it was because they were the best in handling claims and would pay fairly when trouble strikes. I am currently in my first property claim caused by the failure of our RO system under the sink. The resulting flood affected 5 rooms. By the time ServPro finished with their scorched earth mitigation, I have lost 65% of my base cabinets along with the granite countertops. I am in my 7th week since the event and still have no estimate. I've asked very little from USAA and to date only received about $2000 for 8 weeks to compensate for groceries and a few meals out.
I have no working kitchen sink, dishwasher, and disposal and am cleaning dishes in a powder room sink. USAA uses a "preferred contractor" to provide an estimate and I have no completed estimate even at this point. The contractor indicates USAA may try to repair/replace the damaged units and now I will need to wait further to have yet another guy come out and bid to repair/replace 65% of my cabinets and somehow match style and stain of 20 year old premium maple cabinets. Please know it gives me no pleasure to write this review. I am so discouraged and disappointed in this company that I had been holding up to be so great for so many years. This is not the USAA that I signed up for and it is not the USAA that wraps itself in the flag on television. The communication is abysmal, the processes are slow, and they leave the customer, the victim of the damage, to push the process along. Very poor experience.

I filed a claim in October for leaks in my roof that stained the ceiling in three separate locations. USAA recommended a "preferred" provider in my area. I had the provider take a look at the interior and roof of my home. They told me I had hail damage and needed a full roof replacement. They took pictures, submitted evidence and waited... and waited... and waited... January came, still no response from USAA (I had called and left several messages at this point, the provider had as well). I called the main office and asked to speak to a supervisor, and they finally responded to the work request and asked for more photos. The provider sent the roofer back out to take more pictures and resubmitted them. Two more weeks go by, nothing. Mind you I have called every other day only to get a voicemail. I call the main office again, and they tell me they need to send out an engineer, fine, whatever, fix my freaking house already.
The engineer came out, took two more weeks to submit his report. USAA got the report and told me they are not liable for anything except the interior. Meanwhile, the engineer got a check for $3,000, and I have to cover everything for my roof. Shady AF. A property claim, filed in OCTOBER, still has not been resolved and it is currently the middle of FEBRUARY. I have been a loyal USAA customer for nearly 12 years, and I will never purchase another product from them. It's sad how far USAA has fallen. Our house caught fire in March 2018. We have been fighting with USAA ever since to reach a settlement and get our home rebuilt. Immediately after the fire, the adjusters came and made us feel that they would be helping. Instead, they offered a ridiculously low figure and disappeared. It became our problem to figure out the total damage and propose an appropriate amount. After nearly 12 months, the settlement number we have reached with them is nearly 3X their initial offer. We're still struggling to get them to pay that amount.
Overall, we have been shocked at how our claim was handled. USAA has treated us like an enemy and not a customer. Every step has been difficult including communicating with their adjusters. Partly this is due to them being overcommitted and the many fires/hurricanes and other disasters that occurred this year. I have empathy for those other people but why did USAA take so long to reach a fair settlement with us? Why did they delay every decision and make us grovel for simple coverage of obviously necessary items. We have much more to say about this but want to let others know...these people are not your friends and they will fight you to the last for every dollar of payment. Don't believe that you will be treated fairly just because you are a veteran.

They told me to log in and sign. I have tried and tried. My account is locked. I called tech support and it was reset. As soon as I logged in it locked again. I have spent hours and hours talking to these people and each one tells me the problem is corrected but it's not. I call and call and they tell me they can't prove my identity. They ask for information of my driver's license. I look straight at it and answer all their questions which every time is a waste of my time because they say I am wrong. Then they hang up on me now.
I am supposed to have insurance. I can't even send a payment for and a bank account I can't access. So strange how they verified me to open the accounts with the same information and now nothing. We are former customers of USAA and sang their praises until we filed a claim. Before the claim, whenever we called in with questions, the reps were always very friendly and helpful. But when it comes to honoring what they say over the phone all bets are off. Most calls are not recorded so it will be your word against the rep's word and USAA will always side with the rep. We were told that items were covered over the phone that truly weren't in our policy. We were never sent the full policy (only the summary pages) so make sure you request it and comb through it carefully (every other company will send you a copy of the full policy). We had a huge service failure that made it to the CEO's office. In the end they sided with the rep. (Why would she admit to a mistake when the call was never recorded?) They wouldn't even take the blame for never sending us a copy of the policy. (How is that not illegal?)
Also, before they estimated the value of our home for the policy they temporarily insured us for the purchase price of our home (which includes land!) When (on their timeline) THEY decided on the value of our structure and the contents (which was obviously lower than the purchase price) they never gave us credit for the extra amount we paid to insure land (no other insurance company does this). This should have been a huge red flag. We now use CHUBB which will always side with the customer. Do your homework before going with USAA.

My husband and I have been members and customers of USAA for over 10 years, we have had to file our first homeowner insurance claim and could not be more disappointed in our experience or with USAA. We were hit by a terrible hail storm in June 2018. Terrible damage to our property, vehicles, and community. We called and filed a claim and it went downhill from there. The adjuster they sent out didn't spend more than 15-20 minutes at our home. He missed a tremendous amount of damage! I called USAA and told them this and they said "Don't be alarmed, anything missed just have your contractor submit supplemental bids and we will take care of it." Following my complaint I was called by a man that worked for quality at USAA, he came out and spent 2+ hrs at my home. He advised me that he was not an adjuster, but all his notes and pics would be sent over to the original adjuster and it would be revised and approved. Yay!!! Or so I thought...
The original adjuster still proved to be incompetent even when his job was done for him! I called USAA again and was told "just have your contractor submit his supplemental bids and we will take care of it." So that's what we did. It has been 6 months! We have had 5 adjusters from USAA in our home. We are on subfloors and concrete floors, have busted out windows, no insulation in over half our house, our contractor fronted the money to put in a working furnace for us and it's December!!
And USAA has been investigating our claim for a month now. All this could have been avoided if the original adjuster had done his job correctly! I would like to end this review with advice for any USAA current or new or about to be customers; when dealing with any and I mean any USAA personnel record it!! VETERANS BEWARE!!! I wouldn't give them a single star if that was an option. USAA Insurance - Despite the "WE CARE" About our Veterans - like me, present with their commercials we are all flooded with, when it comes time to file a claim in good faith, they will screw you, and basically call you a liar. 2 months ago, we had severe weather tear the roof off of my rental house, and had 2 additional events of rain and wind which destroyed the upper bedroom and all of its contents. I had a local handyman come and remove the destroyed bed, bedding, dresser's, TV, electronics, carpet, etc. and haul it off as it was rain-soaked and filthy as the entire ceiling collapsed onto all of the room.
I contacted USAA the following day regarding the damaged property and went over it all with the rep. over the phone. I was then told that I would hear back. A couple of weeks go by and now I am being asked for receipts and pictures of what I had. Really? Who takes pictures of all the things you may have in every room?
Anyway, I sent several pictures (what I had anyway) along with a detailed list of what it was that was damaged. A couple of weeks go by and I get a call that "they" USAA is willing to send me a check for $2,500.00 and proceeds to tell me what I had. - Magic list that didn't come from me. I paused and asked what about the other items? I was told "based on what I sent" that was all they were "prepared" to cover. I then asked about the pictures I had and the list of items that I sent to their email complaint/claim department. No answer - she had not received it. I resent it all yet again along with pictures that I found that matched what I had - and stated as well.
2 weeks go by and I get a call from an extremely rude and heavy smoker while we talk about what I had. I was asked leading questions about my claim and what I had. I explained that the pictures I had sent and the pictures I sent that "looked exactly like what I had". I was then told that she had found those same pictures on the internet. I replied I don't know exactly where they came from - could have come from my computer, etc, I again repeated that they were pictures of what I had had and lost - NOT the exact pictures from my home.
Then I was told this would have to go to yet another manager. 2 weeks go by and I get another phone call about they had decided to deny my claim as I was lying to them in effect. No answer. I explained again over the phone that the pictures were of an "exact match' (news people call this file) to what I had - NOT the pictures of what I had in my home - merely an accurate example of what was lost. They did not even attempt to talk to the men that removed and hauled off the damaged items. So now I am being told basically that I am lying about what I had - (committing fraudulent claim) and they are denying the entire claim, despite evidence to the contrary. Whenever I called to ask if my policy was up to date they started asking me general questions. They asked me if I was currently living at the residence and I told them no because I had evacuated the area. Then they started asking me more in depth questions so I asked what the questions were for. The Representative's demeanor changed and she became very short telling me that the house is now considered vacant and they were underwriting my policy!
She also informed me that my house may not be covered due to damages from the hurricane since it's now considered vacant! I told her I didn't want to answer any more questions and I wanted to talk to her supervisor. Her response was to tell me that everything I had said to her was recorded and she would be sending it in for further review and if necessary they would take legal action against me. Once her supervisor got on the phone and I explained to her that I was an evacuee and exactly what her representative said she started to backpedal immediately and apologized and said I was still fully covered. It has been proven that it was made out to the wrong mortgage. The check was forged and they tell me it is my problem. The error is theirs and they won't fix it.

We've been USAA customers for 30+ years (home insurance, car insurance, banking, credit cards, the works). Had just one 'minor' claim and the most recent claim on a "personal-article-floater" (PAF) policy for my wife's wedding ring. In order to get this add-on insurance, we provided a copy of what I paid for the ring along with an independent appraisal on the ring ($5700 value and they've had this information on file for past 30+ years). I've paid premiums on this $5700 -value since buying the ring.
My wife's ring was stolen a few months ago, she's extremely upset, and I file a claim against this PAF-policy. USAA comes back with telling me that they will only pay $3400.00 for this ring. Or, they will replace the diamond with a $3400.00 diamond (that it sounds like they picked up from Kmart). If I had been paying an added premium for a value of $3400, this would be fine. I've been paying a premium for a $5700-ring, I paid $5700 for the ring (30-years ago), and the insurance should be worth $5700 (or I've been over-charged premiums from inception).
Getting the premiums to be higher than others seems to be a practice. USAA had a value of items inside the home at some $750K (and charged a premium based on this). We don't keep gold in the home and the contents of our home are nowhere near this high. It's apparently a percentage of the home value (which was also way too high). After quite a bit of back/forth, they reduced the home value - which reduced the value of the contents as well. It is still way too high (I can replace the contents of the home for 25% of what USAA has it valued at and is charging a premium on). When I step back and look at the practice being done on the contents and also on this PAF-policy for the ring - they are identical. Charge a higher premium for a value on the property...but have no intentions at all on actually ever paying for this actual value.
Again, if ring was only worth $3400 in USAA's mind/world, the premium should be based on this value. I was paying a premium on a $5700 ring that I actually paid $5700 for (the original receipt on file shows this). It seems that they never had any intention of honoring their side of the deal and I am not sure how anyone can trust this type of bait/switch scheme. For the diamond that they offered to pick up from the local Kmart, 'no thank you'. I spent over a year of time looking for and finding my wife's wedding ring. I'm simply not able to buy into whatever belief that USAA seems to have that this $3400 diamond picked up off the corner store is anywhere close or near the same thing.
In process of canceling/moving everything. Trust in USAA or the policies issued is no longer there - and moving before something truly major happens must be done. They never used to operate this way and a noticeable change is evident in the way business is done now. I never minded paying them more than any other company for insurance - I simply have to 'trust' the insurance company that I deal with. Best of luck to others and I hope you have a better experience with USAA than the one we've had.

Honestly, I thought USAA was the cat's meow. I THOUGHT I was getting a better rate because I'm a vet and their advertising campaign. WRONG. Example-My Homeowners through USAA was $3400 per year. Exactly the same coverage (better actually) from STATE FARM- $1488 per year. USAA seems to hook you when you’re a young veteran, then slowly bends you over until you feel a jab right up the rectum. They make it feel so natural you don’t even know you’re getting ** hard. Getting other quotes I’ve realized we’ve been overpaying for years.
A company that’s supposed to look out for us vets... Hell! USAA is ran by veterans! Just shows corporate greed has no boundaries. USAA doesn’t care that you served. It's the baited hook to get us active duty and vets sucked into their scam. If you’re reading this you’ve been warned. I have the paperwork proving exactly what I've described. I'm a veteran, served 8 years in Air Force. Joined USAA in October of 2000... Haven’t heard a fart since. Lol. Now I know why. See! That sneaky about it. We filed a claim with USAA in November of 2017. We were pressured (all within the confines of the law, of course) to use a company that USAA claimed to have vetted and pronounced of the highest quality. The implication was: use the company we have a contract with or expect delays and possibly non-payment if you pick your own. We trusted USAA. They contract with First General, which has to be scraping the bottom of the proverbial barrel. We sent pictures to USAA showing the nails sticking up out of the floor, the deplorable quality of work, the inexcusable delays, etc. Nothing. We called USAA. We had a nice conversation with a representative obviously trained to handle "problem customers" without actually doing anything.
We asked for someone from USAA to come see the condition of our home in person. We were finally put in touch with an adjustor, another contracted employee, who actually lectured us on wasting his time. He refused to come see our home. In fact, to date, USAA has never actually seen our home and refuse to do anything about First General even though they have seen the pictures and videos. We even had to look through the bill from First General and catch where they were charging us for services they never provided. We did the work to get the money back to USAA. USAA has spent more time haggling with First General than actually representing our interests. We certainly have not been indemnified.
USAA claims to know the value of a home they have never seen. USAA did not protect us and doesn't really care that First General left our home in a worse condition than it was before we started. As a retired Army family, we believed USAA was comprised of honorable men and women who understood what it means to serve. In fact, that is their motto; however, I think they'd better change it to something more apropos like: "Screwing Those Who Serve." Please think twice before using USAA for your homeowner's insurance, especially if you are E6 and below!

I came out and asked what she was doing. She told me that she was from USAA Home Insurance. I told her that it didn't seem right to stop by unannounced, credentials or not. A week or so later, I got a "revised" bill, for $976 annually, and asking for ANOTHER installment of $90 to make up "the difference"!
When I called them, they advised me that since their rep took pictures, there was some stucco cracking on my home and that the GARAGE DOOR NEEDED PAINTING! This is why they jacked up my bill. I was also told that these repairs needed to be done within 2 years! Now after repeated problems with customer service ranging from homeowner's insurance claims, mortgage refinancing, and finally the app messing up and requesting duplicate wire transfers I have had enough and will be closing my accounts. With the last issue of the lack of customer service via chat not being able to cancel a duplicate wire transfer due to their crappy app when I contacted them just minutes after I received the duplicate wire transfer emails was just unbelievable to me.
Other problems include a mortgage refinance that took 4 weeks to process with repeated requests for information that had already been provided and a roof leak claim in December 2017 that USAA delayed and partly paid giving some bs excuse of the shingles deteriorating just in one spot of the roof... and only have claim reps in certain cities and they only work on weekdays!
So I had an open ceiling in December in Ohio for weeks until the claim rep could make it from Cincy to Columbus. Our claim was denied because of a leak UNDERNEATH our home, covered entirely by subflooring and insulation, was not reported within 14 days. Really?? If we didn't know about it, how could we have reported it? What a sham.
What good is this insurance if there are catch 22s such as this that do nothing to protect your customers. They should be ashamed of themselves. We have been with this company for many, many years and have always had good experiences, until now. I’m a veteran living on Social Security. I had heard good things about USAA and have to admit that I didn’t read my insurance policies (2 auto policies and a home policy), nearly as well as I should have. I have a perfect driving record and exceptional credit rating. My premiums seemed high to me but I thought they were probably in line with most companies. After all, they tout themselves as being military friendly and family oriented. NOT!!! My first clue of what USAA had become was: I live in a hail prone zone and 2-3 years prior I had installed a new Class IV impact resistant roof, (which is much more expensive than a normal roof), in hopes of preventing future roof damage.
This didn’t seem right to me, so after confirming the requirement for me to sign their paperwork I, (without signing their affidavit), started checking my policies more closely.
My findings? Both my house and auto policies cost hundreds of dollars each more than other major companies. The worst part is that the COVERAGE was absolutely HORRIBLE! The company that I changed to (at a several hundred dollar savings), won’t even let their agents write a policy with coverage as bad as the one USAA recommended! USAA, while charging their clients hundreds of dollars MORE, all the while touting how wonderful they are to veterans and military personnel and their families is absolutely deceitful and shameful!
In talking to previously long term USAA clients, the company wasn’t always like this but something changed around 3 years ago. I believe they may have taken a similar “3 D” policy (Dispute, Deny, Delay), that some other questionable (major) insurance companies have recently adopted. This practice heavily inflates the company’s bottom line by reducing their payouts. This is achieved by underestimating replacement costs, inflating depreciation of property, denying claim damage, disputing claim damage and costs, and delaying verbal and written correspondence and checks regarding ANYTHING other than the original unreasonable estimates they present.
A very high percentage of clients either think there is nothing they can do (sometimes correctly so), or they just plain get frustrated and give up trying to get a fair settlement. Great way to make huge profits huh??? To be fair, almost everyone that I talked to at USAA was friendly and easy to work with. It’s the overall company policies that I have a problem with.

Sunday I woke up to a water leak in the basement bathroom. I called the plumber, he came out within the hour...great service and very honest guy. He told me that my leak is coming from the outside of the house and I should call a roofer/contractor to evaluate the situation. I called a few places Monday morning and was told that the valley in my roof was failing. The water was leaking into my attic and should call my insurance company. The salesman called his inspection guy, he came out and inspected my roof for damage, thoroughly.
My husband call USAA filed a claim and was told someone would call us to come out and inspect the damage within 24 hours. The contractor called the next day and said he could not come until Thursday afternoon to inspect the house. He shows up takes a quick outside look at the roof and tells us the insurance company won't repair maintenance work on the roof. He continues to assess the damage on the inside of the house and tells us he will come back to inspect the roof when he gets a ladder. I ask him, "Why would you come to my home knowing the roof was leaking, without a ladder." My husband offered his ladder, the guy gave us some liability speech and said, "But if you want me to go on the roof, I will." He spent 10 minutes on the roof, got down and said he would write up his report.
I was so hurt, confused and felt like this guy did not show up to protect my must valuable possession -- my house. How was he going to protect my property without inspecting the cause of the water getting in my house in the first place. How could he look 13 feet up in the air and decide this is a maintenance issue. I had an accurate inspection of my roof, the shingles are loose in the valley most likely because of wind. There is asphalt missing from shingles and damage to back of the roof, he never even looked at. Water was leaking in between the flashing and the loose shingles were causes wood rot, mold in the attic.
I realize that USAA did not send this guy out to protect my property from lost and peril, but to save them money. The very sad part is he told us the roof is the original roof (18 years old) and has about 5 more years of life. He wished he could help -- like my insurance payments are some sort of charity, but there is nothing he can do. This guy has denied my claim and does not even work for USSA -- how unprofessional, and presumptuous! I am completely outraged!!!

Oct. 2016, found a broken drain under the dishwasher. It had been leaking for quite some time, subfloor damage, cabinet damage, wall damage and the wastewater had seeped into our dining room under the wood floors. USAA immediately stated that coverage for mildew and mold is not covered. I explained that it was actively leaking at the time of detection. They sent out an inspector, produced a 1500 dollar quote for the repairs, with the instruction to have a contractor come out and submit a quote for repair, $18,000+, as the countertop tile is not replaceable, the cabinets needed to be repaired, so now the entire kitchen is patchwork.
I had to have the opposite countertops changed to match the new/different color, textured materials, The repairs to the damaged cabinets looked great, though, then I had to upgrade the other side of the kitchen cabinets to match the repaired/repainted damaged cabinets, flooring to match, etc. Did not get a check until Feb. 2017 for $6,200. Took pictures of the demolition, the floor, the walls, the damage to the dining room etc. Sent to the adjuster, informs me that all of that is covered by the payment received. I spent hours on the phone and she states that the price is dictated by a national database.
For example, 12 square feet of plywood removal, replacement is $25, as the plywood is only 12 dollars for the 12 square feet (though we had to buy a complete 4' x 8' sheet of plywood to cut the 12 square feet out of) and the labor is $13 as it will only take 15 minutes to do the work (and the national database stated that it would only take 15 minutes to do this work at $52 per hour rate). I asked where these contractors are that work on that scale of perfection in time and material. NO answer.
Here I am 15 months out. Total outlay by me is $21,000 for all of the repairs and work and I am still waiting for USAA to do something with the claim, online it states: "Your claim is unresolved because USAA needs additional time to further review and process the claim under your dwelling coverage." Our home in September of 2016 suffered major water damage when our area received 15 inches of rain in a very short period of time causing our bathroom ceiling to collapse and water damage to other areas of our home as well. USAA was contacted and a contractor came and did emergency repairs which left our bathroom ceiling removed. We were assigned a preferred contractor by USAA that came and submitted what work need to be done to affect repairs to USAA Shortly thereafter hurricane Matthew came through our area and caused additional water damage. We were in constant contact with USAA and the contractor trying to get our house repaired and basically nothing happened, one excuse after another.
Finally in January of 2017 with no repairs done and after a conference call between us, the contractor and USAA we had enough and told USAA to fire them and get another contractor. Little did we know was a keyword for USAA to "cash us out." They did not even tell us that it was now our issue to deal with and we did not even know we were now to find our own contractor and get them to do the repairs. We found out that it was our problem sometime later when we asked what was going on with getting us a contractor and were told we were "cashed out" and then told us what that meant. We informed USAA that was not what we wanted but we're told it was now our issue to deal with.
We then found a contractor and had them submit a bid to them and they responded with no they would cover our roof damage, the bid had nothing to do with roof damage and they basically just blew off the bid and we were still living with no bathroom ceiling now for six months and other water damage to our home. During this time we were dealing with many different "Storm Team" members and had no assigned adjuster. In March of 2017 a tornado came through our neighborhood and caused additional major damage to our home. USAA was contacted and they sent a preferred contractor to do emergency repairs and then assigned that contractor to do the repairs to our home. Since we still had the damage from September not repaired we asked that preferred contractor if they would also do those repairs and they also submitted a bid for that as well and USAA accepted that bid as well.
We were finally assigned an adjuster to contact and work on our behalf. During the time working with her to get us packed out of our home and find us a place to live she was caught lying to us, her supervisor as well as the company trying to locate a place for us to live while repairs were being done. We were then assigned a new adjuster. We were given three choices to stay, two hotels One of which was total filthy and an unfurnished apartment that our furniture would not even fit into. We chose to stay in the third choice. Our house was packed out except for the kitchen dishes and cooking utensils. An engineer was brought in to inspect our home for structural soundness and damage. He noted some areas in the framing that required repair as well as cracks and nail pops throughout the home.
He was unable to determine new versus any old and the adjuster then made the decision to repair them all and told the contractor that was what he was to do as well as repair the other damage. Work began and we were almost at our home daily and seeing that the contractor was not making the repairs as required but taking shortcuts. We contacted our adjuster and the contractor asking that we all walk through so we could show everyone and discuss. That never happened. We finally convinced our adjuster to walk through and he became so angry with the poor work and work that he did not authorize. He left the house very angry and even recommended we fire the contractor numerous times. We informed that under no circumstances were we going to cash out and inherit the mess and that we were confident USAA would make it right.
To make a long story short the contractor was not made to do it right was even told to do the work in the kitchen which only made it worse in there. We continually tried to get the adjuster to come look at the poor workmanship to no avail. During this time USAA transferred our adjuster to Washington DC area 3-4 hours away. We had also during this ask him directly who was he an advocate for, us or the contractor as he was more worried about the rating to give them vice correct repairs to our home, at this time we also contacted his supervisor and expressed our concerns and issues. Finally they scheduled a walk through with another local adjuster as ours could not make it there. She was appalled at the work and left the home without even completing the walkthrough as she also had to be somewhere else and would submit her finding to our adjuster and his supervisor.
We never saw the whole list and it appeared to us that they allowed the contractor to decide what they would and would not address. Some work was done but original damage kept showing back up, cracks in walls, water stains in the ceilings and poor workmanship. Mind you we kept telling our adjuster and his supervisor of this the whole time and it appeared that they just kept blowing it off. They scheduled what USAA called a "final walkthrough", again our adjuster, 3-4 fours away had another adjuster go through, numerous issues were pointed out and again not all were addressed and they had the contractor make some minor repairs but again did not address all the original damage showing back up, some they just sprayed "popcorn" over the cracks.
The ceiling is painted tan and the popcorn is white and they just left it that way and you can still see the cracks. We were informed that our house was now fixed and inhabitable and were going to move our household items back in. They did and told us to provide them a list of they that we were not happy with and they would determine what would be addressed and that we were to move back into our home. During the time that the contractor was in our home doing repairs, they dropped our ceiling fan and told our adjuster it just fell, he agreed with us that it could not have, they broke a window, tried to blame us, but over eight USAA representatives never noted a broken window. Broke our bathtub drain dumping cleanup over their drywall and paint brush cleaning, caused a leak from our refrigerator they were using after we had emptied, isolated the water, and turned off and they turned it all back on and were using unauthorized.
Tripped the GFI circuit breaker when they broke and outlet connected to that circuit causing the freezer in the garage to turn off and all the food to thaw out and start rotting. (We were the ones who discovered it and I was the one who verified the GFI circuit had tripped but the contractor told our adjuster that the plug was not seated all the way in which was the very first thing I checked and it was). Damaged the front of my restored 1975 corvette in the garage opening the freezer door into it, they cut most of the cable TV cables, all the internet cables, a good number of my alarm cables at the window sensors as well as the line going to the phone which was also cut, after the home items were returned I then tried to turn the AC on as it was off because we had pointed out to our adjuster.
The one time he went to the house, that the contractor was spraying sealer, popcorn and paint and it was being sucked into the intake and showed him how the filter had become so clogged it sucked up into the vent and all that being sprayed into the air handling unit, the air handling unit would run but the compressor would not turn on. We informed the adjuster and had an AC repair company come to troubleshoot. They found that the contractors had cut all the wires from the air handling to the compressor, the intake coils clogged with dirt, debris and paint. He contacted them and they are to doing cleaning and fix the wiring. (They have stated that they are unsure if it will work or not and we are waiting to get on the schedule.) Our adjuster and his supervisor have said that we are not authorizing us to stay here while those repairs are being made because he told them to fix it.
The temperature in this area has begun to drop into the 40's at night, my wife is handicapped and stated that he authorized cleaning and repairs to either pay to stay here or move into the home with no heat. This is very condensed version of all that has gone on. In short we still have no ceiling in our bathroom, many of the damages from the 15 inches of rain, hurricane and tornado are still there, never repaired or showing back up because they were not repaired correctly and many other poor workmanship issues that have been told them many, many times. USAA (our adjuster as well as his supervisor) will not return any phone calls have stated they have no other contractors that can repair any of our concerns and that we are “cashed out”:, which we stated we do not want to do.
Now we are being forced into a home with no heat and cannot cook and eat until all the items in the kitchen are cleaned which we cannot find anyone that will just do that area and he has stated he gave us money and it's not his problem anymore. We feel hopeless, stranded and abandoned by our insurance company (USAA). It is sad that they are more concerned with grading the contractor than making them do things correctly and when they continually damage and break items they appear to side with the contractor and we had to firmly tell them that the contractors is lying and prove why. We are trying to find an attorney to help us with this mess. All we ever wanted was our home repaired and done correctly, support from our insurance company and get normalcy back into our lives. It is now over a year and have no ceiling in my bathroom, no heat and being forced into my home, very, very sad.

Don’t die if you have any accounts (investment, banking, credit card, insurance) with USAA because if you do your beneficiaries may be put through hell dealing with a myriad of inept customer service agents to be able to manage your assets, based on my recent experiences. In my case my family actually spent money and effort to prepare for the death of my father by creating a family trust and maintaining all the assets in the name of the trust. Most financially savvy people would think that the family trust would make the transition from having two trustees (my mother and father) to having one trustee greatly simplified, but my experience with USAA has not shown this to be a fact with them.
I have 2 graduate degrees from UCLA, an MS in computer science and MBA. Most people would think that establishes my credibility to handle financial management matters with at least a modicum of sophistication and expertise. Not so at USAA. They talk to me like they know everything and I know little. They use policy and law to justify illogical and irrational behaviors, demands for documents and decisions. When I ask to see the source documents for the laws or policies which they have referenced, I never get them. I found myself reminding them that the employees at Wells Fargo bank followed the company’s rules and policies, and look at the havoc that resulted from those efforts (5,300 people fired, hundreds of millions in fines settlements and outstanding civil litigation that could easily reach into the billions of dollars).
Banks should be very careful justifying actions by referring to policy in light of Wells Fargo’s debacle. Watch out for USAA customers services representatives responding to your direct and specific questions with obfuscation and distraction (i.e. instead of answering your question they answer one of their own choosing – THINK KELLYANNE CONWAY). My experience with USAA is that they directly equate effort with results. When they can’t get anything done, they insist on telling me that they made a diligent effort but something beyond their control has prevented them from achieving the desired result. No one has suggested that my expectations are unreasonable, as they are in fact not unreasonable.
If you decide to use USAA for the variety of products and services they offer, expect to hear the phrase “I/we am/are sorry” because they love to apologize for their mistakes and failures. I still don’t understand the point of apologizing because it fixes nothing. Further, an apology from someone other than the actual source of the problem, and not a surrogate, is not remedial. “I am sorry’” is just USAA’s way of distracting their customer from ruminating on their still unresolved issue. When I hear “I’m sorry” I respond that they need to save their apologies for someone who actually finds it helpful or productive to hear an apology.
Also, don’t mistake “nice” for “good” or “effort” for “results.” USAA has serious problems with these two issues. When they can’t get something done, they tell you how hard they are trying and when they make mistakes they apologize and tell you how valuable of a customer you are. When it comes to business I always choose “good” over “nice” and never confuse “effort” with “results.”
I am a member of USAA’s wealth management group, which is supposed to get me to better trained and more senior representatives. On most of the issues having to do with my deceased father’s accounts I have been dealing with USAA’s “office of the president” team which is supposed to be their most capable customer service representatives that have the power and access associated with the “office of the president.” The “Office of the president” representatives tell me that my problems cannot be escalated to a higher level, they say they are at the highest level. However, they clearly know little about social media and the power of the internet or the media – I CAN ALWAYS ESCALATE TO THE INTERNET AND THE PRESS WITH OR WITHOUT USAA’s ASSISTANCE OR APPROVAL.
Since USAA has several products and services you would think that they would have a central point of contact to deal with the necessary account changes associated with a death, but you would be wrong. I received calls from 1) investments, 2) Banking, 3) insurance & 4) life insurance/Medicare so far and they all want basically the same things: a death certificate and the section of the trust that deals with successor trustee. I have had to repeat the very same information 4 times. Further, the trust information should have already been in their possession had they provided the “Excellent member service” or “knew what it means to serve” and required or requested information needed for the survivors to continue on with their lives.
In our case, since the credit card was in my father’s name but used primarily by my mother, USAA immediately terminated the credit card when I notified them that to stop the Medicare supplemental insurance payment. No mention was made to me of the other consequences of my notification like termination of the credit card so my mother was unable to pay for her groceries, freezing of access to bank accounts and investment accounts, and required changes to the dwelling umbrella insurance policies. Everything was frozen while we waited to receive the death certificate – it takes a couple for weeks for it to arrive from the State of California. I guess in the interim USAA thinks my mother does not need to pay her bills or buy groceries.
Since USAA cancelled the credit card that my parents used for automatic payment of some of their regular household bills (utilities, phone, cable TV) we get to discover which companies need to be contacted and billing information updated over the next few weeks instead of helping us make a smooth transition like you would expect from the company that “knows what it means to serve.”
Even though all of my father’s assets were held in trust accounts with my father and mother as joint trustees with each becoming the successor trustee when one of them dies, USAA still froze the assets. My father used the BILLPAY option available to USAA members to pay all his regular recurring bills, drawing the money from the trusts checking account. So he had all their vendors’ addresses and account numbers in the BILLPAY system. When he died USAA prevented me from accessing or using any of that information. We would have made backup had we knew that even though everything was paid by the trust we lose access to the vendors and the recurring payments.
Further, the credit card which was in my father’s name (because you cannot set up a credit card in the name of the trust) was closed when USAA was notified of my father’s death so all the automatic payment drawn from the credit card were terminated and we have no record of the vendors who were linked to his credit card. This makes no sense because the credit card was always paid with Trust funds, so there was no need to terminate the account immediately.
Had USAA provided “excellent member service” they would have assisted us in transitioning to a new credit card for my mother where we would have had the opportunity to reassign the vendor payments to the new credit card. When we finally got an account set up form my mother to log in and manage the trust’s assets it was not set up with the same security options that my father’s account had as you would expect a company that “knows what it means to serve” would do.

USAA abandoned me and my 100% service connected disabled spouse when we moved into our temporary residence in Atlanta, Georgia after selling our beautiful home in VA. As we landed in GA and arrived at our new place... a flood occurred the day we landed in GA. We walked in the residence and there was a huge flood. All that we owned sitting on the floor waiting for us to arrive was saturated with sewage. Whole piece of feces, urine and a stench that was unbearable. We called USAA insurance company, left several messages and all of my belongings were sitting in the sewage and we initially had an adjuster who was on the phone and happened to see the news video of us being interviewed by Channel 2 news. He immediately put us in a hotel and gave us a few initial payments. Then we got a call from some other adjuster telling us to leave the hotel and we were abandoned ever since.
It took 45 days and still no adjuster. Called USAA and no one would help us. They never sent an adjuster out for 2 years and three months after all of damaged belongings were put into a storage unit. Which we paid for with our social security money for 2 years so we could prove we had the sewage infected property and still 2 years and 4 months later the adjuster opened the storage door to assess the damages. Took a few pics of few pieces of property in front w/ spider webs all over the stinky property and he never looked in a box or at any of what I claimed. Just took pictures from the outside and left. 2 weeks later USAA denied the claim. This was a disgrace dirty. They took my insurance money, caused me to be robbed, hospitalized from the sewage, and homeless and then abandoned me. I have called claims over and over and over again. To no avail.
My eyes and lungs got infected because I was doing the adjusters job and I was put on a breathing machine a "nebulizer". We were rendered homeless because as we waited for an adjuster our renters insurance told us we had to leave the hotel and they had not even sent anyone to assess the damages. Channel 2 news came out on the day it happened and documented the flood. While we were homeless and vulnerable a con artist minister told us to stay at their home and when we were showering they robbed us. We DID not find out until we went to the bank. Long after we called Cobb County detectives. The person was prosecuted and jailed. We DID not hear from USAA for several months until they decided not to pay us. Then when we called them upset they told us we were being investigated... me! A retired magistrate certified by the supreme court of Virginia with an impeccable character!
And I was investigated... for what? They would not tell us. It was a stall tactic. My husband was sent to Massachusetts because he could not stand and was in pain and sick from exposure to the sewage. Relatives kept him while I tried to resolve the very reason why I bought insurance to cover me and my husband if a tragedy occurred! They abandoned us and left us to the elements after 2 years and 4 months and they had come nowhere near us. They denied the rest of the $20,000 claim and said the property that sat in sewage for 6 weeks and then in storage for 2 years and 4 months was not damaged and the claim is denied. 2 years and four months later I turn to God Almighty and asked him to deal withthe adjuster who caused all of this neglect to happen Norfolk, Virginia - field adjuster at USAA.
USAA Jonathan **s' professional profile on LinkedIn... Jonathan **. Field adjuster at USAA. Location: Norfolk, Virginia who had me investigated for no reason! I gave it over to God. He (will) fight this battle for me. I had no other recourse. Stay tuned. He mistreated the wrong people. Now. Watch God almighty! Ed. Clemons and Jacqueline **... Atlanta, GA ** if anyone wants to file a class action. No one at USAA has done anything about this and the president's office. His name "Mr. Stuart **" cannot be reached. He has pit bulls protecting him unknowingly from what his customers are going through. So sad. Thank you Lord in advance.

We have had USAA for about 10 years. We switched from GEICO even though the rates were higher particularly the homeowners because the coverage was better and met our needs a little bit better. That coverage is good for nothing if you can't utilize it when you need it. That is precisely what happened. I've never had a claim in my life and our basement was robbed while we were home and the police did a pretty thorough investigation but they didn't catch the criminal or anything. The biggest thing that was stolen were about 30 to 40 containers full of all of my winter clothes shoes and purses. Literally everything for winter that was mine was in those containers. Some of my clothes and I would say maybe one out of every five pieces were expensive designer and well taken care of or new with tags or near new condition. I also had about 10 expensive bags and all of my boots and shoes which were about 60 pairs.
Some of it was easy to remember exactly what was in there but most of it I couldn't think of it and that was a demand that they had up front. They said I had to remember every single item and for every item find it on the internet with a price. Some of my bags were discontinued and it was extremely hard to not only recall all of it but to find prices to send to them. Well I got through probably a quarter of it and I couldn't remember any more of my items specifically. I asked them if I could just say $100 for five turtlenecks and they said, “No each one had to be printed.” I went through several ink cartridges and it took me weeks to get this done. They came up with a figure of something like $27,000 quarter of it that I turned in. They asked if I was comfortable with that and I said yes because I just wasn't going to be able to remember anymore.
I was unhappy that they couldn't give me a $300 allotment for sweaters or something like that but at least it was enough to replace what I could think up specifically losing. She said they would get back with me and the next day she had a proposal of they will hold 15,000 and each item that I purchase they will give me 50% of everything over $50 until all that money was used. That would mean I would have to spend thousands and thousands and thousands out of pocket to be able to use this. There goes the possibility of finding some of it on eBay. And not to mention what about all the items that are under 50? It was just awful. She said if I don't like that I can take 5000. Well that's what I did because it was too confusing what she was proposing and I didn't know if I was going to be able to find the exact things that I had before. That is a strong unlikelihood so either way I was going to lose all that money.
I took the 5 so I could replace some of it. I wish so badly that I had just denied the whole thing because 5000 isn't worth filing a homeowner’s claim. I just felt like after all that full-time work that I did on this claim I should be able to get some of my things replaced at least so I took the 5. But now since I know how they work I am scared to have them as my insurer. What if my house catches fire and they do this crap to me about every piece of clothing my child owns are every piece of everything in our house? I think what they did to me was ridiculous and unfair.
So for $30,000 worth of items that were eligible to be replaced I got 5000. I have been dragging my feet about switching to another company but I need to do it in case something goes wrong. I cannot go through that again with those people. They're not going to replace the stuff in my house anyway if the house catches fire if they treat that claim like they did mine. I should have stayed with Geico.

Hmmm let see... claims on rental properties which were for weather damages and water damages on residence because of plumbing issues. All claims were legitimate. So basically, I am denied a new policy because I used the one I was paying into. Wow... why remain a member? Time to be in better hands.

April of this year was a horrible month. We had a bad hailstorm in which I filed a hail damage claim to my house. The first time adjusters came out, there were three of them and the supervisor basically stated they were not going to cover this roof due to the expense of the roof. I have had to fight tooth and nail with about decking, radiate barrier. This has been the worst experience. Then to top it off I have been paying over 140 a month for the past 15 for my expensive jewelry. I had $70,000 worth of jewelry stolen. They had investigator come to my house and treat me like a criminal. Since then they still stammering to pay for items. What is the purpose of an appraisal when they don't follow it. Who know in the end how much I'll come up with. The company totally disgusts me. Over the last 15 years they have turned from great insurance company to just plain money grubbing corporation who cares nothing for the people they work with.

You think at a time when you are most stressed out because you have to move your family out of your house and into temporary housing, they would be responsive. Nope. Zero ** empathy.

After explaining all the difficulties I had with home insurance division, he was speechless. USAA divisions, you have lost a very profitable customer because of your home insurance division. I had a claim one day after changing my property insurance over and it was a nightmare. After filing the claim and being contacted by a "investigator" I knew something was not right. I sent in pictures and all information required BUT because I couldn't meet with her my claim was never processed.
Not only that she would call so much that it was very harassing. I contacted her supervisor who didn't care at all that I was letting her know that I was being harassed and even so it made no difference. So here we are in July and I am being told that all of my accounts will be closed due to them saying I had made a false claim, back in April even after telling them that the lady wasn't even doing the claim since I couldn't meet with her. Needless to say I am having a hard time and USAA has yet to care at all. After me getting my credit card and they took the money since the account is being closed before it's supposed to EVEN though that was on them and not me. I have been a loyal customer of USAA for nearly 20 years. USAA claims to support the military family, but in actuality they are assisting in killing mine. I'm a hundred percent disabled veteran with two children. USAA has failed to take responsibility of their preferred contractor. USAA has a contract with contractor connections, and together they claim that they guarantee the work of their preferred contractors for 3 years. Which is not the case at all. I have taken this matter all the way to the office of the CEO of USAA, and they refused to assist in this matter. I paid my premium on time every month for the last 20 years. Now they refuse to assist me.
On December 7, 2015 No Limits Construction was paid by USAA for the following service. They were hired to replace all of the drywall after water backup in my home. Mold removal from the water was done by Service Masters, and Eco Systems Industrial Hygienist was hired to ensure that there was no more mold growth, and the house was cleared of environmental hazards and mold prior to No Limits Construction started there work. No Limits Construction was paid a total of $11, 834. 40 for their work. They were hired by USAA as a Premier Contractor. On July 20, 2016, I noticed that there was mold growing in the sump area, and I informed USAA of the problem.
On August 4, 2016 a representative from USAA came to my house about the mold growing, after my house had been repaired about 4 months ago. They determined that the door that was placed on the sump pump area when the house was repaired caused no ventilation in that area, and caused mold to grow rapidly in that area. This is not due to my fault, it is due to the contractor placing a door in that area, where there was previously none. Now this must be fixed. I am a 100 percent disabled veteran with severe health problems. It has been over a week and I have not had any communications about this problem, and plans on who is going to fix this problem. In the meantime mold is rapidly growing and this interferes with my health. It is unsafe for me to stay in my home with mold growing. I am requesting to be placed in a hotel until this problem is taken care of, as soon as possible.
That space has been opened every since I bought this home in 2002, so air could flow from the sump area, therefore condensation could not build up, and no mold issue would occur. But When No Limits Construction did not follow proper procedures and closed up the sump area, condensation built up, and mold begin to grow in the work area. They were suppose to leave my property in the same condition prior to the water damage. So by not following the scope of work they caused more damage to my home, by blocking air circulation and black mold started growing. On August 11, 2016 I was informed by USAA that No Limits Construction agreed to remove the barrier, and also to remove the mold. To this date, I still have the barrier and Black Mold still growing in my home.
No Limits Construction came to my home and set up professional size humidifiers in the sump area, and also placed black plastic over the closest doors leading to the sump area, and stated that they would be back to finish mold removal. But instead a week later they returned with an Industrial Hygienist which they hired and personal associate. No Limits Construction hired a Environmental Hygienist to state that the mold was not caused by the enclosure they installed. Which was insulting, because they were trying to take advantage of a 100 Percent Disabled Female Veteran, by causing serious health conditions and financial hardship for a reckless error that they caused.
USAA stated that they would pay for a second opinion for the cause of the mold. Eco Systems. Eco Systems determined that the cause of the Mold was due to the enclosure that No Limits Construction installed, caused no ventilation and condensation and Mold to grow. Eco Systems informed USAA via phone On October 3, 2016 of their professional findings. Therefore that is two inspectors that stated the mold was caused by their improper installation.
From October 3, 2016 until October 20, 2016, I constantly sent emails to USAA emails concerning the mold growth, and my emails were ignored. I called No Limits Construction and they also ignored my phone calls. I am a 100 Percent Disabled Veteran, and I fight on the behalf of Veterans for them to get the benefits they they deserve. I currently have nearly a half of million veterans that I support on a daily basis. I enlisted their support in getting USAA to respond to this environmental hazard caused by No Limits Construction LLC. Only after hundreds of emails from concerned veterans made complaints to USAA about the unprofessional treatment and service I was receiving did I finally get a response.
On October 27, I emailed USAA and asked again for the report from Eco Systems to determine the cause of the mold. Months have passed and I still haven't received the report from Eco Systems yet, USAA disapproved the claim and stated that it was a matter between me and Eco Systems. They were in receipt of the report since October 27, 2016, and still failed to use the report in rendering a decision in the causation of the mold.
It is clear to see by the Environmental Report by EcoSystems and the Claims Agent that inspected my home sent by USAA that the cause of the mold is caused by No Limits Construction. They stated they would take care of the situation, then backed out of it. USAA stated that they were responsible for lodging while mold removal and laboratory testing from the industrial hygienist came back. They were not willing to pay for appropriate lodging for my family. I am a 100 Percent Disabled Veteran, and I can not afford to pay for hotel lodging.
No Limit Construction is aware of this, and knew that, would prevent them from removing the mold. They would have caused me and my family to be homeless while mold was removed. This is despicable unprofessional, and I pray that the board can rectify this complaint. This Black Mold is causing additional illness to me and my family, I survived 20 years of service to my country in the military, and I would hate to die at the hands of a contractor that does not take responsibility for their actions!

As with so many of the other complaints on this page, I have been a loyal USAA member since I was 16. I am now 50. I have had two claims on my insurance both happen to be this year. The first resulted in the company that USAA sent to my home recommending a new roof for my home. After approximately, 2 months and 3 more visits from people USAA sent the claim was denied. During this time another problem occurred that I was told not to tie to the original claim but to start a new claim. It took a month for them to deny this claim.
This was denied because the damage occurred over time even though I was blind to the damage and the fact that I told them about this during the first claim was used as a reason even though they told me to do that. Needless to say, my business with USAA is finished and I am pursuing legal options. With the recent complaints I see on this page, I am wondering if there is a class action complaint in the future.

If you listen to their commercials or talk to their customer service, you'll get the impression that USAA is all about their customers and serving the veteran and/or active duty member. But when it comes to insuring your home in Florida, USAA doesn't care if you're an active service member, veteran or retiree... they're going to jack up your rates to make you drop them as an insurance carrier.
Apparently USAA doesn't want to underwrite policies in Florida anymore, so they're tripling or quadrupling their annual rates for coverage. My own policy that used to be $2,800 annually has gone up to $8,915 without warning. Competitive rates with other carriers are priced around $3,000 annually for the same coverage... that tells me that USAA is intent on driving their members away from them for home coverage.
Talking to friends is what prompted me to check my current policy. Since the homeowner's policy is something my wife was coordinating, she trusted blindly that USAA would never charge its members more than the going rate for a product or service, and they definitely wouldn't overcharge us. After all, they were started by service members for service members... but nowadays, I guess it's all about the bottom line and the loyalty to the service member is no more. If you haven't checked and compared your policy rates in-a-while, I recommend to check the numbers as fast as possible... the time for trusting USAA has passed.

I was told by USAA to allow the landlord in the house without me being there or a representative there at the house or they would not cover my losses. After I contacted a Kathy ** (a director) they assumed a limited; and be it known, a limited liability and issued a check for hotel expenses and it took an Act of Congress.
They paid me for limited losses and demanded a receipt for a private chromatograph that blew up as well. They have refused to pay for that loss and demanded a receipt. Now they are stating that they will only cover the interior drywall repair and will not cover the roof repair. I just bought this house in Dec. 16 and the leak just started after a huge rain storm a couple of weeks ago and the home is only 9 years old. This does not make a lot of sense since there has not been a leak since I purchased the house.
My deductible is also $3870 with the repair on the interior costing a little under $5000.00 and it is funny I got an estimate from a roofing company and they could repair the roof but will not warranty because it has severe wind damage. They will repair the roof and interior for a fraction of "the company" USAA wanted me to use and charge me up to $5000.00. I will be filing a formal complaint with the Florida Insurance Commissioner. If anyone else needs the website it is **.

My husband and I have been insured by USAA for over 40 years. Our homeowners' insurance rebuild cost has been $680,000 for the last several years. This year when our renewal policy arrived, we received a letter from USAA telling us they were now using Xactware to estimate rebuild cost, and based on their program, our rebuild cost would be $486,000. Our building is continuing to build in our community and homes like ours are selling in the high $800,000 to $900,000 so we know that our home cannot be duplicated for less than $680,000. We asked USAA to show us an explanation for our prior rebuild cost and their new estimated rebuild cost so they sent a representative from a company, Mueller, to look at our home, take photos and provide them a report.
Based on the Mueller report, they revised their estimated rebuild cost to $536,000. We called again after receiving the most recent rebuild estimate and again asked for an explanation. The representative we talked with, Alex, was most polite and professional and explained USAA estimates are based on the average cost of rebuilding in our community using their Xactware Software program and they would choose the person or company to rebuild our home in the event of a catastrophic event. We would not be able to choose our former builder to replicate our home. This was brand new information to us and we have not yet determined whether other insurance companies have the same protocol - Using a software program to estimate cost and choosing the building rather than allowing the homeowner to choose the building.
But we certainly found this information unsettling in view of our annual cost of over $2000 for our homeowners' policy and the escalating USAA homeowners insurance cost we have encountered in recent years. After over 40 years with USAA, we have gathered our declarations pages from all of our insurance coverage currently provided by USAA and sending them for quotes from other insurance companies. If you have homeowners' coverage with USAA, I would encourage to inquire about the details - How they estimate coverage and whether you or USAA would choose your new building in the event of a catastrophic event.
It makes me sad to write this review as, in past years, we have had excellent service from USAA. I would advise others to shop before choosing USAA. The customer service has definitely declined in the last 5 to 8 years. Although customer representatives are polite, they have not been properly trained to answer customer questions - Not the fault of the representative, but the fault of USAA for inadequate training before putting a representative on the phones.

I have been a member of USAA for 56 years. During that time I used my home insurance twice. I called today to discuss roof damage due to high winds. I was treated very rudely by an extremely condescending woman who interrupted me constantly. It was clear she had no desire to help me, she just wanted off the phone as soon as possible. For a company that advertises service to the military and their families I am shocked by the duplicity. After a lifetime, I am now looking for a different insurance company. They clearly have no regard for long term policy holders.

Great for deposit accounts, bad for insurance. My wife and I have been with USAA for many years with their banking products and loved them, so when we bought our house we naturally chose them as our insurance company. Needless to say, that seems to have been a mistake. Our roof was damaged over the winter due the massive wind storms we had, so we got ahold of a contractor who told us our whole roof should be replaced. The bulk of the damage was in one area, but there was minor damage across the whole roof that could lead to bigger problems later.
We filed our claim over two months ago and are still waiting. During this time we've had several more heavy wind/rain storms. USAA sent an adjuster from North Carolina (we live in Ohio), who not only told us to get ten more years out of our roof (we literally have shingles that are warping and barely still attached and our gutters are so full of shingle grit that they are pulling away from the house), but also told our contractors they should do something that's illegal under our state's building codes. I fully understand that a contractor will usually push for what will get them the most money, but after seeing the pictures of our roof, we were inclined to agree with their decision.
I am incredibly disappointed with a company I used to be proud to be a customer of. We'd already had to raise our deductible because they jacked up the rates in our area and now we just seem to be getting the runaround on our claim. These guys were awesome when they only had deposit accounts, but I would steer clear of their insurance. Multiple other customers of our contractor have already gotten their roofs fully replaced while we're forced to sit and watch as our roof gets worse then fret about having to repair those parts individually as they deteriorate (which will cost a ton). This is our first and only claim and most likely our last year with USAA insurance.

I have had USAA renter/homeowner insurance since 1992 and would definitely recommend USAA. I've filed a handful of claims and they were always handled professionally. Each time they paid the claim in a timely matter.

I've been a customer of USAA for 35 years. I sold my condo in October, 2016 and put all of my furniture and items in storage for 4 months. When I sold my condo I contacted USAA and explained my items would be in storage until I bought and renovated the place I was buying. On November 8th, 2016 I bought a townhouse. I contacted USAA for homeowners insurance but also told them my furniture and personal belongings would be in storage indefinitely. The moving company required that everything in storage be covered by insurance. I trusted that USAA had provided me with the correct insurance to cover both my townhouse but my items in storage. On February 1st, 2017 I physically had my items from storage moved to my new residence. Unfortunately there were a number of items broken and not delivered. The moving company had 120 days per their contract to find my items.
Unfortunately after 60 days they sent me a check for $132.00 at 60 cents a pound for the items packed and broken by them. I was advised to contact my insurance carrier as the items were not found. When I contacted USAA I was told by several individuals that my renters insurance was cancelled when I purchased my homeowners insurance and since they only keep messages for 90 days they had no record of what my phone call consisted of and therefore they would not reimburse me for the items that were not delivered. I was very disappointed in the way this was handled. Their decision to pay nothing was based on their inability to have my phone call tape available. Nice customer service from a company that I've been a customer of for the past 35 years. Thank You USAA.

I have been in the military for 10 years. I have had Navy's Federal for insurance and USAA for banking. I wanted to keep all my services together before I got out. I switched to USAA Valuable and Renters Insurance and two days later my home was broken into. A few minor things were taken, but it was still my items. I made a claim for two televisions, a watch and a fire stick. That's all.
After sending in pictures, contacting Walmart for receipts that they were unable to get because of time, and not being able to tell them who got my the fire stick for Christmas and my watch for my anniversary I was passed on to a special investigator. I guess because my "spouse" couldn't be reached and I didn't have enough information they didn't want to handle my claim. The person they have harassing me Sandra ** is terrible! I will never ever do insurance with USAA again - I'm also thinking about changing back to Navy Federal. By far the worst experience for me and my children.

I've been with USAA for insurance for over 26 years - starting as a second lieutenant in the US Army. I have seen the steady decline in their support to customers, ending with my recent homeowner claim. Much of my roof was damaged over the winter to the point of leaking. I filed a claim and scheduled the repair. USAA only wants to do things electronically and their electronic systems all suck. After remaining silent for over a month, despite multiple attempts to get a live agent on the phone, I got the electronic notification from USAA that they would not pay the claim. If you are a young service member - do NOT BUY USAA's hype. They do not support you any better than another insurance company... They are frauds.

We had a great experience with it USAA Homeowners claim. Our water heater busted and flooded our whole bottom floor. The water mitigation (removal of water damage) was handled quickly and the build back was processed quickly as well. We had hardwood floors, carpet padding, kitchen cabinetry and more... All sorted in 3 weeks. Thank you so much!!!

In Oct. '64, I began driving (on my father's USAA policy). When I was commissioned in 1970, I followed in my father's footsteps - I choose USAA. For the next 47 years, I was bombarded by USAA's incessant advertising. Basically the gist was always the same - "Don't worry soldier - wherever you are, we will ALWAYS protect you!!" I always believed their story. Then 2 weeks ago, all hell broke loose in our lives. We are now retired, and have been living in our brand new home for 18 months. An overhead, 400-pound wooden beam snapped loose. The only thing keeping it from crashing to the floor (and killing us) was a single sheet of sheetrock. I immediately filed a claim with USAA. Long story short - the claim WAS REJECTED!! "Sorry, sir - your accident was a result of shoddy workmanship, BY THE BUILDER. We comply with NM law - the blame rests with the builder. You might try going through your builder."
All fine and well, EXCEPT 18 months ago, the builder quit building homes, folded his tent and faded into the dark fog of night. Yep - he's a real dirt bag!! One of those builders. Now, here we stand, within months of age 70. We have never been in trouble with the law; never bounced a check and NEVER had any financial issues (our FICO score is currently 766). Yet we are now looking at filing bankruptcy. Our meager financial savings will be instantly depleted - they could NEVER cover the repair costs.
USAA's attitude is straight-forward - sorry buddy, but we operate by The Book - OUR book. It would be one thing if we had lived our lives as financial deadbeats, but that is not the case. We have ALWAYS lived frugal lives. LOOK what that got us!!! Now, every time I see one of those USAA commercials on TV, I must turn off the TV. That jingle about "being for the warriors and their families" makes me want to throw up. With a clear conscience, I CANNOT recommend USAA to today's young members of the force. Believe me - they aren't going to protect you and your family.

I was hopeful that if the time ever came that I needed to file a claim from my homeowners policy that USAA would take care of me under difficult circumstances. This was not the case. I had water damage that had started before I purchased the home in a upstairs bathroom but only became aware of it when it leaked through my ceiling below. My claim was denied with very little assistance and an incorrect observation from the adjuster. I'm highly disappointed that after paying in the neighborhood of $35,000 dollars year to date on this policy that this is what it comes to. Enjoy the free cash. No wonder insurance company CEO's are some of the highest paid.
