My experience was good until I had to get my braces off. There was a mixup with the orthodontist office with the cost and so when it was time for me to get the braces off I could not get them off due to lack of payment from Metlife. I called and spoke to at least 6 different agents who were all going to take care of the issue and submit a rush order. I actually had the the insurance agent from the ortho office and the Metlife agent (Sharon from th escalation department) on the phone together speaking about what the issue was regarding the lack of payment and what needed to be done. The date was August 19, 2025, the actual date that my braces was due to be removed. As of today, September 8, 2025 the corrected dental form is finally being submitted for payment (at least that's what I've been told).
I spoke to David today in escalation who also said he would put a rush on this process. I need to get a root canal and I can't even make an appointment until these braces come off. The Ortho will not remove until the braces are off and Metlife isn't submitting the information to get the claim paid so that I can get them off. At this point, I'm not feeling like a valued customer. I am paying Metlife for a service and the Southern Smiles Orthodontist for services but they are treating me like they are paying me. I am NOT getting the feel good feeling I should after hiring someone to do a service for me. This has been a very frustrating process. My teeth have been held hostage for money even though I have done everything I needed to do on my end. Metlife and Southern Smiles had the communication issue but I'm the one who has paid the inconvenience! Not fair! This was my first bad experience with Metlife and hopefully it's my last.

MetLife takes your premiums and finds ways to not pay claims. They constantly ask for additional information that has been sent numerous times. It is a stall tactic to wear you down. My dentist sent the entire file, but MetLife keeps saying information not received. How do they continue to get away with this! Clearly, their upper management doesn’t read reviews because there are thousands, yet nothing changes. I’ve been dealing with MetLife for 6 months, trying to get a resolution. Most of their representatives are in another country and regurgitate what you say to them. STEER CLEAR OF THIS COMPANY IF YOU VALUE YOUR SANITY.

This insurance deserves a class action lawsuit. They will keep asking stupid questions just to hold payments for as long as they can. I am 65 years old, and they have all my information to process the payment for my crown. Today I noticed that they need to know if I am a full-time student or disabled. When I asked why they need this info, a lady said that sometimes there is an age limit. When I told her that they have my birthdate, she said that she does not see these questions on my website. This is like some kind of scam.

Metlife has been one disappointment after another. Their job is to hold onto their money for as long as they can. They keep denying my dental claims giving excuse after excuse despite my dental office providing gobs and gobs of information they need for a simple perio maintenance. Absolute crappy customer service and why have dental insurance when they do not pay anyway?

I found that MetLife Dental Insurance is a very difficult company to deal with when it comes to claims. They kept denying parts of my claims and I had to call them over and over again. Every time I called (multiple times over 2 claims in two years) about my claims I always got someone who was not even in the United States. I had to ask to speak to someone in the United States. When I finally got to speak to someone in the United States they would explain they were working on it and then nothing happened, I would call again and told the person I spoke to before made a mistake and they would take care of it. This continued to happen multiple times.
The periodontist’s office also called and submitted multiple appeals. The first claim finally got paid after a year of fighting with them and multiple appeals. The second claim was for another tooth but was exactly the same procedure as the first claim. That one never got resolved correctly and after 15 months of arguing and appeals I just gave up and paid the periodontist.

My wife recently had dental work for which the coverage was denied, based on needing additional information. Too bad I can't give them 0 Stars.

MetLife went rapidly downhill in 2024 after I retired. They denied valid claims by not honoring by new retirement policy start date. When I paid extra to 'backdate' the start date of my policy (which actually started on that date), they still refuse to honor my dental claim. This is after multiple (more than 20) calls back and forth. You think you are finally getting somewhere with someone who tells you she 'cannot understand why this valid claim is not paid yet and will take it up with her manager' and then that person is replaced with someone new, to start the process over again! No accountability. Worst dental insurance ever. Do yourself a favor and skip MetLife - it will save you a lot of hassle later.

My tooth had FOUR cracks, and I am being denied coverage that is included in my policy because their dentist can't understand why I needed it. Now I have to call my dentist for the 2nd time to request more information to send to Metlife. Apparently, Metlife's dentist can't understand the problem with a tooth that has FOUR cracks.

Waited over a year to get dental insurance, then when I try to use it they just flatly refuse the claim and still want you to pay for the deductible. What's the point??? I will be cancelling my coverage as soon as possible. I would rather smash all of my fingers with a hammer and my toes with a steamroller than deal with MetLife Dental and their associated companies again.

I’ve been with them for almost 6 years, their coverage is a joke. Their in network providers are your corner store old dentists, none of the reputable advanced clinics accept their charity like coverage. Most of the places I call are out of network due to their low coverage. I’ve been trying to get implants pretreatments estimate but keeps getting denied. The first time was based on alternate treatment, and they still refused to cover for the alternative options, so payed out of pocket twice.
Now few years later resubmitted for pre-approval due to alternate not lasting, their denial response stated that benefits were used and they are only covered every 60 months. I’m like what!!!! I never received the treatments in the first place because it was denied. Now it’s being reviewed but I’m not hopeful they will cover any thing. I will definitely switch to another company on the open enrollment since I have a choice of 10 others companies to choose from. By the way their premium is the highest. I will say though the customer representative are very nice and professional unfortunately they are not the ones making decisions, I will not stay with a company because they have a nice facade but rotten inside. Also most of my coworkers are switch due to their dentist dropping MetLife all together.

Shady business practices. I reviewed Metlife Veterans Dental coverage and decided to go with the higher plan over the standard. In bold print, it looks great. It shows 40% for out of network and 50% for in network on a root canal. What they don't go over with you when you sign up is that the dentist submits their charges and Metlife has a max allowable cost that they pay. In this case, I was charged roughly $3400 on a root canal. Metlife had a max allowable of $1100 and some change. That is the price that they provide a payout based on the in/out of network. So, after the total cost and insurance payout, I was only provided 19% coverage ($647), $2700+ out of pocket. I would look elsewhere for dental insurance if I were anyone. Unfortunately, I am stuck with this company for a bit longer. I will not be staying with them when the contract is up.

MetLife is not consumer con-centric. I was on their dental plan for 9 1/2 years and it was a constant struggle, from honoring claims, to getting through to the write person and understanding foreign dialects. Agents are not empowered to make any decisions and reaching a supervisor is not easy. They are trained to deny restorative dental work in the hopes that most consumers will "give up" due to long hours on the phone. Eventually, they will honor it if you don't give up. It's a racket and for such a large company, it should be embarrassing. Look into a good dental savings plan instead or go with Aetna if you need dental insurance. Avoid MetLife.

The manner in which MetLife Dental Insurance (MLDI) handled my simple claim makes me think MLDI is a scam, and should be subject to some kind of review from whatever legal authority handles insurance companies. When my dentist filed a claim, MetLife claimed I was not in its system. My husband paid premiums for MLDI. The policy was simple and clear – I was entitled to two dental cleanings a year. I was astounded at the extent to which MLDI went to avoid paying for a standard dental cleaning. I had to
2. provide a copy of our insurance policy.
My dentist had to submit several claims, each time rejected for weird reasons. One Customer Service Representative found my name in the MLDI system, yet when I called again the Customer Service Representative could NOT find my name. If MLDI pays its representatives minimum wage, the wages paid would have been higher than the $200 MLDI should have paid out at my dentist’s first submission. Insurance companies invest the premiums policyholders pay. I suggest dropping MLDI. Do not give MetLife money to invest. Apparently MetLife does not hold up its end of policies. Do not give MetLife money to invest to pay only their executives.

Today, one of their associates hung up on me when I asked to speak with a claims supervisor. I guess they win again. Who would go back to someone who did all of our work wrong. I had to pay another dentist thousands to redo our work. They told me to send them all the information and I did; see the photo and receipts from the United States Postal Service. They never even responded. MetLife is the worst insurance company I have ever dealt with. I was told they would cover 2 veneers because my front teeth were crumbling away. After the procedure was done, they covered nothing. After calling numerous times and being put on hold for 30-45 minutes each time and being asked the same verifying information over and over, no one could give me any information at all.
Finally, I requested a supervisor and talked to Maria A. She promised to expedite my claim and would call me back in 48 hours. That never happened and when I called back and demanded to be put on hold until Maria A. answered, she finally came back and told me it would take another 10-15 days to process my claim. It was already been over 6 weeks. This company refuses to deal in good faith with my dental office and I really want to cancel this insurance but I am not sure how or if I can cancel at this time. I've called half a dozen dentists and all of them are out of network. I decided I'd return to my previous provider and asked for MetLife to provide an estimate of how much they cover for out of network providers. If I could give a “0”, I would. I had a dental bridge fail. They refused the claim stating there was a cheaper way to replace the bridge with a partial plate. I asked for a review, stating the 2 teeth that held the old bridge were ground down and would have had to be crowned before they would hold a partial. Additionally, 1 of those 2 teeth had a root canal, which would require a crown either way. 2 crowns and a partial (which made no sense) was MORE expensive than replacing the existing bridge. They once again denied the claim without providing any additional information, using the same “reason”. Their reason: “there was a cheaper way, ie. a partial plate”. Also, they waited until I changed companies during open season before denying a 2nd time. IF POSSIBLE, MY RECOMMENDATION, DON’T ELECT TO USE METLIFE AS YOUR CHOICE OF COMPANIES.

Started in Feb. 2024 with them not paying for some of my fillings and has just gotten worse. Explanation, "need more information to determine if needed". Dentist filled some more teeth a couple months ago and they denied some even though they had never been filled before: "too many times filled"... Weeks ago, I had a crown pre-approved, and my dentist decided to touch up some old fillings as well since I am moving out of state... They were denied. And now, my crown that was approved has not been paid and the claim is closed. The reasoning, "not enough information to determine a benefit". It was already approved, and they denied it! Their part of the cost would only be around $300. I wrote a letter to them about a month ago requesting an answer, and they have yet to respond. I have expressed by frustration to my dentist office, and they have told me there are several hundred unresolved cases with their office alone that is MetLife claims. **This is the worst company I have ever dealt with and strongly urge anyone interested to consider a different company. The reps start very nice, and in no time are disrespectful by interrupting you after explaining your call. They operate as if they are not accountable for the way they interact with the company. Regarding claims, they intentionally will claim their specific codes are not covered, or replaced with different one, so that a claim will be filed for appeal. The wait time for an appeal is longer than the standard 30 days. After supporting your claim with information from the ADA (American dental association) they will then accept the claim, not apologize for their denials, instruct the claim needs to be re-filed again, and the process starts all over again.
Normally a reputable company would apologize, and escalate the claim, so obviously this is a tactic to draw out the process, and hope an appeal is not filed. I have paid my premiums for a continual 3 years, and out of all the claims I filed (mostly for endodontic work) a measly $240 was paid. After all the appeals, all but one was not paid, and I'm still at it for the last one. I will NOT be renewing my plan any longer, and the enrollment period can not come soon enough!!** ***BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY, YOU WILL NOT BE PLEASED ONE BIT!!***

Not only that, although I two dental cleanings are covered per year, I had to pay in full for my latest dental cleaning. It never ends. No more dental work for me this year.

I am a relatively new customer with MetLife Dental. I completed the necessary form to show I had consecutive/no lapse in coverage of dental and thought all was well with my being able to be covered for services such as root canal, effective 1/1/2024. Never a word from them! As it turns out, I had to have a root canal 6 1/2 months into the policy and it has been flatly denied because they claim they never received the form or it was not processed. It cost me over $1700 and I’m not getting a penny! The appeal process was totally bogus. They claimed they needed more time to properly investigate. A letter dated 5 days later denied the appeal without any apparent investigation of material I had provided. I am angry and will shout from the mountaintop about this lack of consideration for retirees seeking to navigate without good dental coverage options!!! I worked 40 years as an educator. Too bad for me, right?!

Over the past month, I've had several claims, and MetLife covered only about 24% of each one. When I tried to appeal, they gave me numerous reasons why my claims weren't covered more, primarily blaming an HR issue at my job. Their solution was to suggest I talk to someone at my workplace to get better coverage. Isn't the point of paying for dental insurance to actually get coverage for dental work? Right now, it feels like I'm throwing money away. Insurance shouldn't be this frustrating.

Had a really hard time finding a specialist that is in network with Metlife, I assume it's because no one wants to work with Metlife because they are awful. Finally found a specialist and they submitted the necessary pre estimate for benefits to Metlife. Metlife denied the pre estimate claim. I called Metlife and they said it was missing a “clinical narrative” from the doctor stating the root canal is necessary. Who gets an unnecessary root canal just for fun?!? I then had to call the specialist to explain this to them. The specialist said they already submitted the clinical narrative along with the CT xray clearly showing a big crack through my tooth.
The specialist went back and forth with Metlife and finally after THREE WEEKS Metlife was willing to pay 50% of the root canal procedure BUT denied the other part of the claim for the crown that gets put on the tooth after the root canal is done. Had to call Metlife again - they feel a crown is not medically necessary!! I guess they feel I should let the specialist leave a hole in my tooth after the root canal. This is the worst dental insurance I have ever had. Will not be signing up for it again through my employer next year.

I have been a MetLife Dental customer since 2020 through my work. On 6/28/2022 my son was visiting and had an emergency root canal while we were traveling in Birmingham. I went through the process of finding a dentist that was in-network. They sent me to a specialist that was also in-network to do the root canal. They ran it through MetLife and gave me what I would need to pay (which was just a co-pay) and what would be for insurance. Pre approved and we were set to go.
A few months after the procedure I was called by the specialist and told MetLife wasn’t paying their portion of the bill. I called MetLife and the rep told me that they showed that my son had other insurance and that they would be his secondary insurance. I had the conversation with my ex and the specialist. When they filed with my ex’s insurance they sent back that my son’s benefits had been maxed out. So the specialist said that they would refile with MetLife. A few months go by and I hear from the specialist again. They still had not been paid. We are currently in November. I called MetLife again and they said that they would not pay because they needed a copy of my divorce decree showing that I had responsibility to have him on my insurance.
I asked why it matters what my divorce decree said….my son was 20 and we had been divorced since before he was a year old. They just kept saying that was their policy. A crazy ridiculous policy if you ask me. They had never requested this before. I ended up having to pay the specialist almost $600 out of pocket so I wasn’t turned into a collection agency.
I sent over the divorce decree and called and spoke with someone about it. They said they would then send everything to the next level to the department that deals with claims. So they can take care of it with the dentist and then the dentist would have to reimburse me. Never happened. I called them back about why they haven’t even reached out to the specialist to resolve the claim. They tell me that they do not have a copy of my divorce decree and until they get it they can’t do anything.
We are well into a year at this point. I have called and ask for a supervisor and have been told I cannot speak to one. I ended up sending a fax again with my divorce decree in December of 2023 (yes, still hasn’t been resolved) and was told it was received. They would get right on contacting the dentist and getting the claim resolved and get the dentist to send me a check to reimburse me. They said they would call me back and tell me when it had been resolved. Nothing. I called back right after the new year. The representative at first said they didn’t have my divorce decree. I said…I am not playing this game again. I have the name of the person I spoke to, the reference number, the fax number and the paper showing the fax was received.
All of a sudden he found it. He then said it was overlooked and he would immediately escalate the situation and make sure it was a priority to resolve. He said he would call me back within 24 hours to confirm the dentist had been contacted and that they were sending a DOB to them. Nothing. Called back today and got the same run-around. The reason I called back is because the dentist said they have not heard from MetLife. Again, they tried to say they didn’t have my divorce decree. I had to tell them that I had the name of the person that I spoke with and confirmed they had received it. Once I gave him the name…amazingly he found it. BTW….this was supposedly a supervisor (which I had always been told was not an option). The funny thing is…this supervisor says all of the same things an entry-level rep says. Told me the same stuff, he would escalate it, it had been over-looked, call me back….blah blah blah.
I called him out on that and said I have heard it all before. That everyone says the same thing and they never call me back, they never do what they say they are going to do and my claim just sits there. Going on year 2 now. Basically, MetLife is acting in bad faith and has broken their contract with me. My policy (which I pay for monthly) clearly states that they pay for root canals. They have everything that they require (no matter how ridiculous it is) from me to fulfill the requirements for them to pay for my son’s root canal.
I find it crazy that in 2024 there is not any avenue available to customers to be able to speak to people in MetLife’s company to have situations resolved. No emails, no phone numbers to call, no supervisor or upper-level management that can or will resolve situations like this. It still isn’t resolved. How much of their job are their customers doing? Why are we having to work to get them to do their job? How much money are they making off of us? How much money are they making by not reimbursing us, not paying out claims that our policies clearly cover, by giving us a runaround, around interest on the money they are making that should be paid but is just sitting in the bank? How many hours I have put into this one situation over the past almost 2 years?
I feel like MetLife should not only pay me back for what I paid (that they legally should have paid) with interest…but they should have to pay me for the work I have done on their behalf to get this situation resolved. Oh the best part….this time they tried to tell me the reason my issue was over-looked was because when I sent in my divorce decree I didn’t also send in a DOB with it. Guess what MetLife….THAT IS NOT MY JOB and I am tired of the excuses. I agree with the review that said companies need to DROP MetLife Dental from their insurance plans for employees. Maybe then MetLife will actually see that PEOPLE MATTER and you cannot overlook us any longer. Ready to file a class action lawsuit. Knowing I am not the only one. Do yourself a favor and DROP MetLife insurance before you are in my shoes.

Recently I had a surgery/ procedure done that multiple representatives had assured me that it would be partially covered. I have resent all other paperwork that the company needed and I’m still waiting. I have made several follow up phone calls to no avail. It seems that my paperwork keeps getting not received or lost. I was not going to leave with my provisional. I would need to go toothless for 2 weeks, and while the procedure was being performed the dentist had to postpone performing the D7950 service in one area.

Besides the pain of dealing with unhelpful customer service, they are unclear on what is covered and somehow weasel out of paying for something every visit. First, they approve to the dentist, then they later decline and you owe a balance. Hate them and customer service might as well be poorly programmed robots.

I truly believe MetLife should be shut down as a company, because they are borderline fraudulent. I had 1500$ for lifetime orthodontic worth through Metlife. I got Byte, which are teeth aligners. Byte said they took my plan for Metlife all the time, it was covered up to the 1500$. That was in January. I filed my claim, MetLife denied it because they didn't have the correct address. Okay, stuff happens. I get Byte and Metlife on the phone and have Byte send over the info. Denied again. Conference call number 2. Byte sends info again. Claim denied, say they don't have the info. Conference call number 3. Byte is getting annoyed at this point. Byte rep says they can see in their records that they have mailed the info. Metlife says okay yeah we got it this time. I call Metlife, they say the claim has gone through and they will be sending me a check in the mail for the money (I got a loan to pay back Byte, so Byte has been paid but I still need to pay loan.)
Two months pass, no check. I call Metlife. They say they sent the check (for 800$, not 1500$) to Byte. Great, wrong person and wrong amount. And they never notified me, a single time, on any issue, ever. Not on the wrong address, other "missing info", bounced check, denied claim. They say part of my orthodontic money has been spent and I only have 500$. I don't think I ordered braces in my sleep, I tell them that I in fact did not spend any of my orthodonic money. They check and tell me I'm right. Okay? We get on the phone with Byte, (this one was actually Byte's fault) turns out byte sent them the wrong address this time. The office we call in in CO (I got the work done and my insurance and the previous byte location were all based in TX), they have no record of me, they don't even do mail order aligners. I will be calling Metlife and Byte back tomorrow. So glad I pay these people bi monthly to absolutely waste my time.

I faxed it again and they acknowledged receiving it but I cannot get any update only instructions on how to file a claim. I pay my premium each month and the implant is listed they do not want to pay. My dentist is not in any network but I have been with her for over 10 years and have been hesitant to change dentists because of her knowing my history. I tried to log on to their website to get the information, was told to register my account (fair enough). When I attempted to register, I was told I am unable to, and needed to call the company. When I did, and finally got through to their technical support service, I was informed the issue was with the phone number I am giving them.
They told me since my employer records incoming calls on their business line I can't use that number with them. Thing is, the number I tried to give them is my personal cell number for 20 years, and not at all connected or accessible to anyone calling my employer. So I tried to use my wife's number (who doesn't work for my company). Was told I can't use her number either for the same reason. Was told if I want to actually be able to register an account to use my insurance I either need to buy a landline phone or "wait until tomorrow". Which sounds like they could resolve the issue but can't be bothered.

If I could give MetLife Dental a zero-star rating, I would. My experience with them has been nothing short of a nightmare. Since my employer switched from Delta Dental to MetLife, I've been caught in a whirlwind of claim denials, lost paperwork, and alleged coding errors. The most egregious incident involved a medically necessary replacement crown. Despite the fact that the original procedure was covered by Delta Dental, not MetLife, my claim was denied based on MetLife's frequency limitation policy. This policy only allows for one crown replacement every five years, a rule applied even though MetLife had not covered the original procedure.
I appealed the decision, providing all necessary documentation and explaining the medical necessity of the procedure. However, MetLife rejected my appeal, leaving me to bear the financial burden of a procedure that should have been covered by my insurance. The handling of my claim was inconsistent and frustrating. Initially, the claim was denied due to a coding error, which was rectified by my dentist's office. The claim was then denied again, this time due to the need for X-ray evidence, which was also provided. The final denial, based on the frequency limitation, seemed arbitrary and unfair.
I've discovered that my experience is not unique. Numerous complaints here on Consumer Affairs highlight a pattern of claim denials and poor customer service from MetLife. In conclusion, I strongly advise against choosing MetLife Dental as your insurance provider. Their practices have caused not only financial strain but also significant stress and frustration. It's clear to me that MetLife Dental prioritizes policy technicalities over the health and well-being of their customers.

MetLife is one of the worst dental insurance providers I have ever had during my 30-year employment history. They continually refuse to pay for necessary cleanings that I need quarterly due to an infection in my jaw-bone. Their corporate policy states that you have to have at least 2 of 4 "quadrants" infected to qualify for quarterly cleanings and because I have only 1, they pay $0 and I'm left holding the bag.
They will also go after you, the consumer, if they make a mistake and overpay your orthodontist or dentist. They overpaid my daughter's orthodontist who, according to MetLife, wouldn't give them the overpayment money back and, rather take the orthodontist to claims, they decided that they are going to stop paying for her dental cleanings until they get the money back from us even though we had nothing to do with the overpayment. This should be illegal, as it's definitely immoral, but this is another one of their "corporate policies".
MetLife used to be known as a good dental insurance company but, now, they are but a shadow of their former selves. Whoever is running their company should be fired because, once people realize how crappy this company has become, they will have ruined any good faith they had built up over the years. I plan to dump this garbage dump of an insurance company as soon as I can and they will have to go take the orthodontist to claims to get their money. It's too bad that our family will have to go without getting dental cleanings until then. What a sad and pathetic company MetLife has become.

That's Bundling and Unbundling and it's illegal. He also violated the no Surprise billing law. He told me the pretreat was approved and my share would be 3750.00. Never showed me that it was possible. I would have to pay 4000.00 more. Never had me sign as required, a Good faith estimate.

My Dentist is fraudulent and is using the No capping dental legislation in Iowa to get paid an additional 4000.00 in this case, and I'm sure they have and will do this to other patients. In essence, they were paying, as max allowed, a visit to a dentist pretty much what one would spend at a barbershop. With all due respect to barbershop professionals, dentistry is still a branch of medical care and allowing a maximum that is humiliating to the profession is just a way to retain reimbursement from insured patients. In the end, in 2022 we spent more in insurance than we got back from Metlife. We felt in the backseat, speechless and impotent before such greed and careless practice. We changed insurer.

I've been with MetLife TakeAlong Dental for 2 years. I got Covid last month so called to let them know and the lady said I could make both February and March's payment the end of March. Within a 2 week period - knowing I couldn't pay til March 24th - they attempted to charge me four separate times with four different amounts causing me $140.00 in returned payment fees with my bank. Granted they made my account -140.00. My bank verified this. Which leaves me paying 140.00 extra to my bank for their mistakes.
So naturally I call MetLife customer service and explained my issue. Four people and 45 minutes later I demanded to talk to a manager. He tried to claim they only tried to charge me once. When I called him out on his lie he claimed he needed to check his system and changed his story. He claimed even when you postpone the payment that as long as you have payment information attached to your account - which is conveniently a requirement - they'll always try to pull the payment even upon the original date even if a postponement is approved. I was then told I should call my bank because my bank must have given me false information on how many times I was charged for various amounts because of the error made by the billing department.
The supervisor kept trying to compare the situation to situations he's had with his personal Discover credit card payments. I told him I wanted my policy canceled and I was going to find different insurance. To which he responded that because it was 3 days into the month he couldn't cancel it until April 1st and I would have to pay for March even if I don't use it. How convenient for them. Then he kept trying to find ways to get me to not cancel my policy and pretty much thought I would change my mind with not being able to re-enroll for 24 months for the horrible service I had received. He finally understood I'm done and put a cancelation on my account. It almost felt like they were desperate for money the way everything went. I will never use this insurance again - it's complete trash and not worth a penny. Don't waste your time or money with this company. It's a total scam where nothing's ever their fault.

My first appointment after Nov 21 was July 22 because I was ill and had to cancel my scheduled appointment. By necessity, I have to go to an out-of-network dentist. While the MetLife information I received when I signed up for 2022 indicated that my benefits would be the same as for 2021, when I received my reimbursement, MetLife had significantly reduced the amount of the reimbursement. MetLife made a change to their High PPO dental plan as of 1-Jan-22. The change placed a ceiling-cap on the coverage for out-of-network dental care. Prior, the member paid 10% of the bill for Class A (preventative and diagnostic care) treatment. Now, the member pays 10% with an unknown cap that is discussed between the dental provider and MetLife only -- the member is left out of the loop. My wife and I both went to an out-of-network provider with the understanding we would pay only 10% of the bill with our $50 deductible. The bill came to ~$900 for the two of us. With a $50 deductible and 10% we would have paid $140.

I completed the second questionnaire and mailed it on 23Oct2021. I received a 2nd response on 10Nov2021 that more information was needed. I called and spoke to several personnel at MetLife Dental (Joe & Katherine) who were particularly unhelpful. I finally spoke with Justin in El Salvador and he said he would reprocess the claim as they did not look at the information I provided in the 2nd response. I was told this would take 10-15 business days to process.
I have heard nothing so on 17Dec2021 I called again. I spoke with Gerard and he said nothing had been done and he would reprocess again I was told this would take 10-15 business days to process. I am a federal employee in Texas. I had MetLife Dental for 3 years. I paid high premiums for High $25000 maximum dental coverage. This year they tried every tactic and runaround trick to keep from paying my claim for Smile Direct orthodontic retainers, EVEN THOUGH THEY PAID FOR THEM LAST YEAR! I submitted the claim in June 2021. It took me 3 months,20 repeat faxes, 15 phone calls, written appeal to their dental claims review in Kentucky, and complaints to State of Texas and federal government to get them to pay $99. I faxed them the correct information (you can’t upload) again and again and kept getting the same stupid questions I had already answered. They lied to me on the phone and told me my claim would be paid and then no check was issued. I think they don’t want to reimburse Smile Direct claims but that should be told to customers during Open Season.
I am switching back to GEHA Dental. During one telephone conversation I was told their Dental Director had issues with Smile Direct. NOT MY PROBLEM. They take advantage of federal employees. The Texas Department of Insurance would fine them for their fraudulent tactics. I spent hundreds of dollars on premiums and they played games with me. They wouldn’t deny my claim, just send me the same set of stupid questions that I already answered with the receipts and documentation. This was the worst insurance experience I ever had.

The denial codes were vague and untrue. Called the tangled customer service line several times for explanation and got nowhere other than them telling me an X-ray was dated after the procedure which doesn’t make any sense. This wasn’t even mentioned on the EOB. Called dentist and he filed an appeal with all pertinent docs 15 days ago. Called again and Per MetLife, they haven’t received the appeal yet and we should give them more time. What? Why? Do they not have employees at this office taking care of incoming docs!!!
Had 3 way call and DDS will AGAIN go through the process. It appears that things have changed in the last year with MetLife and they are just denying major claims hoping they will go away. - rude and unhelpful customer service people when you reach them
- typical appeals process where no one actually reads/responds to your specific situation

The major problem then was a poorly functioning website that was almost always inaccessible and no real customer service to correct it. Then the pandemic. I received an email telling me I would receive a credit of 25% for two months premiums in April and May. Didn't happen. My provider all but shut down his practice. Couldn't change providers because the website never works. Can't change by calling because you get automated systems that fail or cut you off.
If you get through, it's never to the right person/department so you get transferred and then cut off or lost in a loop. I finally had it and tried to cancel policy. Save your money and don't get Dental Insurance with MetLife!

I have had Metlife for years. I had 4 different dentists submit plans for implants over the years. They approved every plan. But when I finally found the right dentist, who also submitted a plan, they denied it. It is the same thing they approved 4 different times. I now owe my dentist $35,000 because Met Life refuses to cover what they agreed to cover 4 previous times. When I talk to them on the phone I get conflicting answers. Some reps claim they agreed to pay (then they don't send me confirmation). Some reps say it has been denied. They claim they have no records from past years. They are also arguing over paying for a crown. They used to be great dental insurance, but now it is horrible.

Customer service seems to be bothered when calling in for questions about coverage. I am really disliking their customer service skills and wish my employer had a different company for dental coverage. Hopefully we can get it change in the years to come or I’ll just be finding a different coverage company.

I changed my dental plan from GEHA to Metlife dental plan in 2019 and regretted so much. Metlife does not pay anything as they said they will. During the re enrollment season, I talked to representative and assured that they will pay for implants. So I proceeded to change to MetLife dental plan knowing that I would have 2 implants for 2019. They did not. Please do not believe what they say. Go with GEHA who was willing to pay for my implants in 2018. The only thing is GEHA has smaller limit.

I had dental insurance through Delta but switched insurance (with no lapse in coverage) due to job change. I had already had my implant put in the year before but needed to get a crown installed once the implant was healed up (had a bone graft). Several months after I switched to Met Life I went to get a crown. They sent it in to get it pre approved, but they denied everything because the tooth was removed before I had coverage through them. Worthless.
I got a routine cleaning done earlier this month. Just received a letter from Metlife showing a denial of services, with the reason being something along the lines of "that provider may not still be the correct provider." That is not what it said, but it was something along those lines (going from memory of what I read yesterday). I'm getting rid of my dental policy with Met Life. I will get more expensive insurance elsewhere. Even no insurance offers similar coverage, for less premium. I almost requested a quote for their car and life insurance. I won't be making that mistake. Hopefully no one else does either.

They deserve zero Stars. Unfortunately, I selected MetLife for veteran's dental insurance. After 2 months they paid $4 dollars in claims. Pre-approval for additional work took 42 days, they promise 30 day to make a decision, and they denied almost everything. They failed to look at the reason for the claim, conveniently, thus causing the pre-approval process to start over. Customer service sends you around and around to talk to different people. It is a joke. Please avoid them.

Once my dentist left the HMO plan, I tried two other dentists who tried to convince me I needed $4000+ worth of work and they took 50 X-rays. I went back to my old dentist to find out that I didn't need any work. I then tried to change my plan to PPO so I could see the old dentist. Nobody at MetLife knew what they were doing and kept transferring me. Some of the operators were obviously high. I will be filing complaints with the Dept of Insurance and reporting the dentists to their licensing boards.

If I could give this company ZERO STARS I would. By the instruction of my Periodontist, I was told that because of the nature of my case, he couldn’t see any reason for my insurance company to deny reimbursement if I decided to pay out of pocket. He said that because this was a preventative measure, that the insurance would applaud this proactive decision and reimburse me, because it would save tons of money (and time) should the negative predictions come about what could happen as a result of negligence. So; I decide to do it, and paid a good bit of money out of pocket.
After receiving the initial denial and submitting an appeal, I was denied again. I probably should’ve saved my money and been irresponsible (like most people) and had my insurance cover a procedure for thousands of dollars after the damage was done. Word to the wise; either find a better dental insurance option if available or get an approval in writing from the insurance company. I wish we had another dental insurance option with my company.

In my own personal experience, MetLife cannot compete with most dental insurance companies or their plans! They're not offering affordable pricing, quite the opposite, and I suppose you have to find a your own dentist with the MetLife plan. From my own personal experience, MetLife is on the low end, 30 to 40% higher! I would suggest a person find a reasonable dental insurance company, as many are offered by your local dentist and the majority are below what MetLife charges!! Let your brothers, VA, know about the program as well as the Veterans Administration...it's highway robbery!!

They said in the brochure that implant will be paid but they do not. GEHA was paying for my implant but I was told that Metlife has bigger allowance so I switched to Metlife. It turned out Metlife costs more but when it comes to implant they made all excuses not to pay for it even though I was in the middle of the procedure and GEHA already paid for half of it. Metlife made it so difficult to claim anything.

I am a Vietnam Era Veteran. MetLife Dental Program website for Veterans is misleading. I enrolled in MetLife Dental program for veterans because of my proximity to VA healthcare facilities. I strongly recommend any Veteran considering the purchase of dental insurance from MetLife under its VA dental group study its policy very closely. MetLife pays next to nothing for outside network claims. I found it to be very difficult to find a dentist within MetLife network. I believe this is due to MetLife’s substandard dental fees. If you are a veteran and qualify for healthcare stay with the VA.

I was enrolled with Metlife Dental through my employer last year. I left the company in January and took the Cobra option to keep it as my two children were just getting started with braces. I signed up to make my payments online and did so accordingly until June of this year. I was going on vacation the first week of June and wanted to go ahead and make my payment online early so as not to forget it later. I logged in and made my payment or so I thought. At the end of the month I received a letter of cancellation. I was stunned and so I called Metlife. The rep was very rude and told me that it was cancelled for non payment of my June premium. I advised her of the date and time that I had made the payment and she looked it up.
After being on eternal hold she came back to let me know that the payment was not processed because I tried to pay it before the due date! I asked her what that had to do with anything? She stated that their system will not allow a payment to process until the due date and that it has a small pop up window at the bottom of the screen that states it and then she said that no one ever notices it and this is a common issue. I asked her what I could do and that I needed my coverage reinstated. She said that all I could do was file an appeal online and wait! Appeals can take up to 60 days. Appeal was filed and denied. No explanation as to why.
The letter plainly said that "We are sorry but the decision was not in your favor". What a load of bull! I then found out from the Orthodontist office that kids go to for treatment that they have only paid $450.00 towards the $1,500 Orthodontics coverage that was the contracted amount so now I'm stuck paying it all out of pocket! This Company is the BIGGEST Joke ever! There are way better plans out there so do your homework!
