If you are considering MetLife Dental, be prepared for a "coverage" experience that exists only on paper. My recent experience—which mirrors thousands of other 1-star reviews in 2026—has been a nightmare of systemic lowballing and administrative stonewalling. The most infuriating part is their "Paperwork Fatigue" tactic. Their member portal, mobile app, and dial-in systems are perpetually "broken" or "under maintenance" the moment you need support. I have spent hours on hold with offshore support teams who lack the authority to help and provide a different excuse for their system failures every time I call. It is a deliberate loop of misinformation designed to exhaust the policyholder.

The only gratifying experience I had with MetLife was the moment I canceled my policy. It is clear that their business model is no longer about dental health; it is about collecting premiums and making the reimbursement process so structurally impossible that you simply give up. Save yourself the stress and the massive out-of-pocket costs—look elsewhere for a provider that actually pays its claims and treats its clients with basic respect.

I am writing to express my concern regarding MetLife Dental Insurance’s continued use of Social Security Numbers (SSNs) as a form of identification. Using SSNs as an ID number is outdated and raises serious privacy and security concerns. A Social Security Number is highly sensitive personal information that should be strictly protected under privacy standards, including those aligned with HIPAA principles. Requiring or routinely using SSNs increases the risk of identity theft and unauthorized access to personal data.

In dental offices, patient information is often handled by multiple staff members, including administrative personnel and assistants. While many are professional, the reality is that not all environments have the same level of data protection controls, and not all staff are adequately trained or compensated to manage such sensitive information securely. This creates unnecessary exposure for patients. There are safer alternatives available, such as unique member ID numbers, encrypted identifiers, or other secure systems that do not rely on SSNs. Many modern healthcare organizations have already moved away from using SSNs for this reason.

I strongly encourage MetLife to reevaluate this practice and implement more secure identification methods that better protect patient privacy and align with current data protection standards. Protecting patient information should be a top priority, and using SSNs as identifiers does not reflect best practices in today’s healthcare environment.

MetLife NCD Dental was recommended by an insurance broker due to the high max payout. We are in our second year and it is the worst dental insurance I’ve ever had, highest monthly premiums, lowest coverage for preventative as well as major items. They want to cover $500 of my husband’s $10,000 dental surgery based on their elusive maximum allowable charges. Their marketing materials are false advertising and I hope others aren’t misled into buying this coverage.

Metlife dental is the absolute WORST! They have denied every claim I have submitted for periodontal work, stating they need additional information. When I pointed out that I had just had a procedure in December 2025 and asked why they didn't reference that as prior history. The rep I spoke with was nearly impossible to understand due to a heavy accent. I don't understand why 10 prior years of periodontal history isn't enough to pay a claim. They even denied covering a night guard because I grind my teeth, which is what is causing my periodontal issues. I think their employees must get bonuses based on how may claims they deny. If you have Metlife good luck! Bring your checkbook and plan on paying everything yourself, even if you stay in their network.

I have to deal with this through UHG at my job. We had a very difficult time getting my newborn daughter covered. They required an original copy of the birth certificate mailed to them and now won't mail it back, They keep threatening to drop her coverage and making us jump through hoops just to keep us covered. Now they threatened to remove her just because they don't have the ssn. This place has piss poor service and I wish companies nationwide would stop using this service all together.

Finally had enough of rising premiums and low coverage after many years with this company. Cancelled my policy. The straw that broke me was paying a small fraction of the cost of a cleaning and only covering $22 on a filling. They would only partially cover the cost and that was for a silver filling. You have got to be kidding, silver fillings. Stay away from this company as you will save money paying out of pocket for services instead of supporting MetLife's insulting dental coverage.

MetLife insurance canceled my husband's insurance and mine without notice. My husband passed away 12/21/25. Metlife canceled his insurance on November 31. I had thousands of dollars work done in December that they did not cover. If you call them, they give you no answers, they put you on hold, then come back and say their system is down. I wish I checked the reviews before getting MetLife. It's truly a horrible insurance.

The most terrible company I've ever dealt with. They are in the business of denying claims. There is no policy of how long it takes to review claims. I'm waiting already for 2 months (3 months from date of service) for 2nd (!) review of the claim. Calling 4 times and and with each call I'm getting a different timing: 1 week, 2 weeks, 30 days, 45 days... Beware and stay away from them as far as you can.

This has been a nightmare. I called before my child needed a crown. I verified the doctor was in network. I verified that it would be covered by insurance, and was reassured by there rep that there would be no issue with approval as long as he hadn't had a previous crown. I paid the doctor 50% and MetLife has been denying their payment to the doctor. I've got my HR Benefits folks involved after the claim was denied twice. The doctor has submitted the records twice yet they say they "haven't received them." It's a scam and I am still fighting a $700 bill.

Claim denied. Out of network is 90% covered, yet they have a made up system of the allowed amount. Then you have to fulfill the plan deductible bar graph which is also made up and cannot be explained over the phone. So if you have a 50.00$ deductible and your bill was 110.00$, and you have 13.00$ remaining on your deductible, then you will not be reimbursed the amount allowed nor the 90$ out of network fee they agreed to pay. They make every exception and made up rule to not have to pay you. The 90% out of network rule is not upheld within this company. They lie and add stipulations after you sign up, moving the goal posts. This company is fraudulent and a scam.

MetLife Dental HMO has been an absolute nightmare. I paid my premiums consistently every single month for over 18 months, yet my account was shut off and I was unable to use my benefits. Despite doing everything right on my end, they ignored my requests and refused to turn my account back on. Customer service is horrible. Representatives are dismissive, rude, and hide behind scripted, politically correct language instead of actually solving the problem. They pass you around, give vague answers, and take zero accountability. No one follows up. No one fixes anything.

Their system is clearly glitchy and broken, and these “system issues” are never resolved. Somehow they have no problem taking your money every month, but when it comes time for you to actually use the insurance you PAID FOR — suddenly your account doesn’t work and no one can explain why. This company wasted my time, my money, and caused unnecessary stress. Paying customers should not have to fight this hard to access basic dental coverage. MetLife Dental HMO is unreliable, unprofessional, and completely unconcerned with the people funding their business. Do yourself a favor and stay far away.

I was floored yesterday. I just discovered that a part of 'the package' is their National Wellness and Fitness Association. I pay a monthly premium of $81.50 and $17.50 goes to this Association. In order for me to know what this was, I had to register...they give discounts....so? I didn't ask for that and I certainly didn't ask to have my insurance switched over to MetLife. Unfortunately, it's a completely different company than what I previously had and my oral surgeon isn't even listed on it.

I filed preauthorized claims to complete my two implants.....they denied. I had to have a broken wire reset and they denied. Overall, I've paid out over $1,400 and they've only paid $400. I called 3 different 800 numbers to cancel my insurance. The Wellness Center wouldn't cancel me. I called the other two #s and stated I wanted to drop the Wellness portion. They said I couldn't because it was a 'package deal'. I soon realized this is a scam. I repeatedly told them I wanted to cancel the insurance/wellness. They hung up on me. Shame on them! Today, I sent a cancellation letter. (I can provide the denial letters if you need them.)

They said I can go to appeal, which would involve me filing paperwork and taking off work so they can deny it for the 3rd time. I will be dropping this dental insurance.

Two years ago, I switched to an out of network (biological) dentist that requires payment at the time of service, then they provide me with the paperwork to submit to Metlife Dental for reimbursement. My experience working with Metlife Dental has been absolutely terrible. They only accept claims via fax or mail. Not accepting any form of digital claim is ridiculous in the year 2025. Initially, I mailed my claims, but they stated that they never received them. Then, I faxed the claims and they sometimes received them and sometimes not. I finally submitted complaints to my state insurance regulator who was able to help me get the claims processed. In my opinion, Metlife Dental purposely does not accept digital claims because it gives them an easy way to avoid processing claims. They can just say that they did not receive mail or fax claims.

Whenever I contact them, it is an overseas group that is not helpful. They just repeat standard responses to your issue and are never able to really help. I had to ask them to escalate several of my emails to a supervisor to finally get someone in the US. Overall, I do not recommend Metlife Dental if you see an out of network dentist. They like to collect my premium every month, but don't want to help me one bit when I submit a claim. They are an unethical organization.
