After having been with American Family for 50 years, I made the mistake of making a claim, and was dropped. The claim was less than what I’ve paid over these years. They need to drop the “Family” from the name of their company and should change their motto to “bill them and then screw them.” If you have them, I’d urge you to switch companies, because they’ll dump you if you make a claim. If there was something lower than one star, that’s what I would give them.

I had been with AmFam for over 10 years. My 17 year old son got his drivers license recently and AmFam found out about it and said they need to adjust my auto rate because another licensed driver lived in my house and had access to the keys even though he hardly ever drove since I have only one car. They put his name on the policy and proceeded to jack up my auto rate from $1,200 per year to $4,800 per year and that was with the good student discount. When I complained the only response I got from them was "I don't make the rates". Needless to say I am no longer with AmFam. I got other quotes and for the same coverage I got my auto rates back down to $1,500 per year. I also saved $1,800 per year on my homeowners insurance.

I recently submitted a claim for my RV. The siding opened up and American Family Insurance Company denied my claim stating it was a result of inadequate maintenance. They claim that the owner's manual requires me to inspect and chalk the seams every 6 months. The owner manual suggests that I evaluate the seams while cleaning to avoid water damage. It does not say that I must inspect and repair the siding every 6 months or the siding will come off. I inspect my RV every time I use it to make sure it safe to travel down the road. I think AF is just unreasonable and avoiding paying claims. This is a 2020 RV that has been insured with AF since 2021. It's not old or falling apart, it's relatively new.

On 04/13/2023, I hit a mirror of a parking Mazda car in Pleasanton Ca. I put my phone number under the windshield wiper and the owner called me. I submitted a claim and his car got repaired. Few months later my insurance company (Geico) cancelled my insurance. Later on the other party insurance company (called American Family Insurance) asked me to pay $2,858.27 (this is the amount Geico refused to pay as they are not justifiable). American Family Insurance asked Geico to pay $7,585.99, Geico paid only $4727.72 and declined to pay the remaining amount which is $2,858.27./

I called American Family Insurance and they gave me a 50% discount and asked me to pay only $1,429.14 and they told me if I did not pay I would lose the discount and I would have to pay the full amount. I called Geico and they advised me not to pay, as $7,585.99 to repair a mirror is not justifiable. Later, I received a letter from American Family Insurance asking me to pay $1,429.14. I called them and the representative who answered me told me if I do not pay, my license will be suspended as they sent this claim to the transportation department. I refused to pay.

Hail damage to my car still not resolved because repair shops do not want to waste their time. Just by looking at my car they tell me it looks like it’s going to be a total loss. The insurance company is not doing anything and wants me to take pictures and send them the pictures which I will do. I think they are doing this because they don’t want to pay to have my car fixed. I had the same issues with the homeowners claim. The adjuster kept telling me they had already paid out everything and they still owed me money.

Turns out AMFAB hired one to collect $47.00 from me! Spiteful company. Was never contacted by my previous agent or by their corporate office that I owed money! Not how I expected to be treated as a long-term customer.

Call them and they said takes 60- 90 minutes to sent someone to open my car! Called 2nd time to see how long I have to wait? I’m in Az in 116 grades! 2nd agent told me that there is no claim, it looks I never called them. So a friend of mine drove me home to take the spare key, and when I’ve got back to my car I was very SURPRISED, that my car was opened and they left the keys at customer service in Albertsons grocery store! I was totally disappointed and I called them so many times and still today I don’t know who opened my car!!! More than this my Agent Gregory ** suggested me to move to another company and not bug him with this case any more! So this is what I’ve got after 20 years… Totally disappointed!

We've been with American Family in Minnesota (Jeff Mayhew Agency) and were extremely happy with our agent and AF. Upon moving to Washington State in 2005 we were sad to find that AF wasn't doing business in WA. I spoke to Jeff Mayhew, he notified us when AF started doing business in WA. We moved all of our business and personal policies to Julia Meek Agency. WOW! Julia and her team (Ray & Joe) continually go above and beyond the call of duty. I have recommended AF and Julia Meek Agency to many friends, they are equally happy. In a day and age where most companies lack good customer service skills, Julia and her team have capitalized on it. I rated AF and the Julia Meek Agency 5 stars. It's too bad their scale doesn't go up to 10. A 10 would be well-deserved.

I've have American Family for 22 years and I had them in Minnesota too. I'm very disappointed in them for the auto accident claims and for the home repair claims I have had this year and last summer. The home repair claims sucked because they gave me a company that wasn't properly licensed by the state to do the roof repairs. The auto accident claims part sucked because I has to pay every day for my car rental because the car cost was over my daily “allowance” for rentals. This was the only car the rental company had so what was I supposed to do? And I had been charged for a service visit at home because the rental car’s battery died.

Also, with the dead battery, I missed one of my physical therapy appointments as I was on medical leave from work with torn knee ligaments. Again, rental car batteries and other maintenance isn’t my responsibility to check on. Plus, the auto accident was not my fault to begin with. It’s sad how a long-term customer was treated so shoddy by both the auto and home claims.

This the same insurance company who had other clients who hit me when I was past the fog line in my own driveway. She convinced the sheriff's department and Oregon state patrol it was all my fault. Plus she and her husband were friends with both officers. Her insurance company didn't pay anything to have my truck fixed. They put it down it was my fault and Progressive was too chicken to fight for me.

This is hard to write because we have had AmFam for well over 10 years. We went with them due to their low cost and over the years they provided good service. In that time I had 3 claims. 1) I backed into a lady at a dark intersection who pulled up so close I could not see her lights over my tailgate. Minimal damage but that wiped out my accident forgiveness. But no raise in rates. 2) Chipped windshield. No fault. 3) Someone backed into my truck and dented my bumper. No fault. Again my rates did not go up. Over this time I had at least one if not two motorcycles plus renters insurance so we enjoyed multiple discounts. But this last month I got a shock when I got my renewal notice and our annual premium went from $1900 to over $3000.

And here is the part that is prompting me to write this. Today I looked at the current policy and I found something weird. In the general policy overview, it clearly states that one vehicle's annual premium is $968 and the other $572. That's $1540. Yet the monthly payments add up to over $1900, plus it's stated as such in another place on the policy. I have a message into the agent for an explanation.

I have never been asked to go to a different insurance company because they don't meet my needs! (Per Camy owner of the AFIC in Minnesota) All because when I first signed on with AF the insurance was reasonable. However it has almost doubled in price and I have not had a ticket or accident. I'm appalled by this behavior of an agent. Instead of hearing me out they get offended by my concerns. I was told they don't usually raise the insurance. I understand that the economy is high and all the money goes into a pot and we all use it. Still not fair to raise the good driver's insurance and get offended by a customer's feelings. This insurance company is at a 1 rating when it comes to customers. I can honestly see why. Not sure how they can be in business. This is your job so treat customers with respect.

If I could give zero starts, I would. The entire experience has been a nightmare starting with a stolen car in a different country, and I feel utterly let down by the insurance company's poor handling of the situation. The adjustor's attitude has consistently been dismissive and unhelpful. Instead of providing support and guidance, I felt interrogated and doubted. None of the process felt like an attempt to resolve my claim. The settlement offer was insulting and a complete lowball. The amount proposed was significantly lower than the market value of my vehicle, based on just 2 comps. When we said we needed more comps, they gave me two different comps, dismissing the original two. It was clear that the company's priority was minimizing their payout rather than treating their customer fairly.

Overall, I am deeply disappointed and after more than 15 years of paying premiums with never more than a windshield claim, I am struggling to get fair treatment. I would strongly advise others to consider alternative providers for their auto insurance needs. The lack of professionalism, empathy, and fairness in handling my claim has been appalling, and I regret ever choosing this company. I will be taking my business elsewhere and ensuring that everyone I know is aware of the poor service I received.

This is the WORST insurance I have dealt with. Their insured rear-ended me and my passenger at a red light at about 30mph. I called and reported the claim and it took 2-3 days before anyone called me to discuss the incident. The girl who called was very unprofessional and didn't really seem to know what she was doing. I received another call from a lady named Shavonne ** on 5/3/24 who told me if I go to the doctor, send her the bills, otherwise that was it. Ummm no ma'am, that is not how BI claims work in AZ.

I explained to her that I had breast cancer and because of my surgeries I am not able to get treatment because I cannot lay down to get any sort of adjustments and this has caused a great deal of pain to my upper back, neck and shoulders as well as the breast which had surgery because of the seatbelt. She offered me $1,000. I said that would not cut it to which she said the claim would be escalated to an injury adjuster. I called today 5/9 and come to find out, she DID NOT request it be transferred to a BI adjuster, she simply closed it. This is not ethical handling of a claim and is in violation of fair claims handling to which this will be escalated to the DOI. I hope NONE of you ever have an accident with anyone who has this insurance because they don't care about people, just a paycheck!!!

I was rear ended and American Family was the insurer of the person at fault. I cannot even begin to describe how stressful dealing with American Family has been. So far, American Family paid $0 but I have been out of work for two weeks, due to my injury (which my insurance coverage may have to pay for, if American Family will not), my out of pocket expenses, to date, also include $483 in car rental fees, $140 in medical copays, $73 in prescription medication for injury, $259 for daily storage of my car at the tow yard (my car was totaled). More than a week after the accident American Family informed me that they will not cover any expenses related to my vehicle and that I was responsible for daily fees acquired while my car sat in the tow yard. Fortunately. I have AAA and was able to get it towed to another location. I'm having the same poor customer service that is mentioned in other reviews.

Our from the beginning our claims adjuster. C.B. (initials only), has been angry and rude. She's all but accused us of being responsible for the accident. We've had to make the first, and majority, of the contacts and are always treated as though we're bothering her and that she just doesn't have time for us. It got so bad that I had to reach out to my insurance agent for assistance. After my agent spoke with C.B. he was shocked at how rude she was and by how little information she provided. As of today, we continue to cover all car rental fees and medical bills. My husband is still recovering from his shoulder injury and has been out of work. If I could give a negative review it would be a -5 stars. Avoid them at all costs.

So I got to wait through Christmas and New Year's before I heard from their insurer, American Family. I had my repair shop take photos of the damage to my truck and email them to AmFam. Over a week later I got a reply from an adjuster that they can't open the pictures. Curiously, this email didn't specify a preferred format for the images. I would think that they might request a specific format that they can open. I find it very interesting that a multi-million dollar insurance company that can afford the latest and greatest computer tech, doesn't have the ability to open some pictures from a repair shop.
