This mower has always been hard to start. Every year, I have to change the plug and give it a shot of ether to start. Now I have a leaking carb gasket and cannot find one through Troy-Bilt. There are four (4) gaskets on this carb assembly due to the many brackets which also attach with the same bolts.

I bought their self-propelled 12AVA290711 with the 190cc Honda engine from a Lowe’s in Mooresville, NC couple years ago. It has been the most trouble-prone mower I've EVER owned! Should have known what I was in for because it was discounted heavily because they couldn't get it to start. After adding new gas and removing the air filter, I was able to get it to fire. I've used it sparingly - probably a dozen times - on yards where I can't get my 42' Murray. Things I've changed/fixed so far on a lightly used, garage-kept mower... engine stop cable, self-propel cable and 2 blades (bend easily when contacting ground due to small dip in turf; other mowers would just scalp).
Things I can't keep enough of... the damned 1/4 - 20 square nuts which secure handle to mower (they continually allow wing knob to loosen, even during the shortest run time and believe me, you can't get through 2 passes without having to bend down and tighten them) and air filters (design flaw lets far too much dirt enter assy). Things I have to fix now which prompted this review... 2 bolts securing engine to frame broke while mowing allowing motor to just flop around. The best part of the mower is the Honda engine which seems a little under-powered but gets the job done (of course that's when rest of the mower is cooperating). These things are total turds and should be recalled.

After using our weed eater three times and storing it as per the directions, we experienced a critical failure with our weed-eater. The Torx bolt inside of the drive-shaft failed and separated it from the engine crank. Tried to call customer service, but to no avail - as well as attempting to contact via e-mail. Worst products ever as this is the second time I have had one fail. This unit was a replacement for one that was three months old from Lowe’s.

I purchased my machine from Lowe's, used it twice on consecutive days, and stored it as recommended. Three weeks later, I retrieved it for use and nothing. I was told the warranty was up. It was pretty gutless for cutting weeds anyway, but at that price, I thought I would get a year or so out of it. No more Troy-Bilt for me, I can guarantee that.

Well, I bought a Troy-bilt 2-cycle weed eater about 6 months ago. Used it 4 times maybe and now it barely wants to run. I have to half choke it to even keep it running if I even put or on run for a second. It stalls. It's a piece of crap. I cleaned the carb and put new gas and still stalls. Don't buy this weed eater. It's garbage.

I bought Troy-Bilt self-propelled mower with forward wheels as drive wheels. It lasted 1/2 season before the front left tire wouldn't spin anymore when transmission was engaged. I removed the wheel and the plastic gears were chewed enough that the metal gear wouldn't spin the wheel. I ordered a 2-pack replacement set of wheels and went through them both in 3 cuts. A wheel lasts 1 cut and the gears get chewed up. There is no apparent damage to the gear and I have not taken to the repair shop. What a huge piece of junk, metal gear and plastic wheel, cheap and stupid design. I replaced with a Toro and love it. Toro has my future business now and never again will I buy a Troy-Bilt. I think they should rename the company to Kid Bilt, or maybe Little Kid Bilt.

I purchased a heavy duty Troy-Bilt riding lawn mower. It was called a garden tractor but that is a joke. It was useless in the garden. I used it one season, maybe 18 hours? I changed the oil and stored it according to the owner's manual over the winter. Come spring time, I checked the oil, added fresh gas and started to cut my grass. After about 20 minutes, it threw a rod and oil sprayed everywhere.
I called Troy-Bilt; they instructed me to turn it in to their authorized repair facility. After about two months and a dozen phone calls, the repair people claimed that the engine was run with no oil. I was informed that Troy-Bilt would not repair or replace the engine because it was operated with no oil. It is worth noting that the engine was covered with oil and I had checked the oil a few minutes before it failed.
I picked up the junk tractor and brought it back to Lowe's. I told them the story. They replaced the machine with a brand new one. It is fairly lame but I have used it for several years and managed to keep it patched up. At one time Troy-Bilt manufactured great equipment. Now they allow their name to be put on junk MTD tractors. I will never buy anything with the Troy-Bilt name on it as long as I live. Lowe's has a customer for life because they treated me right.

I purchased a Troy-Bilt 21-inch self-propelled mower from Lowe's in 2011, used ii once and it started to make a noise. I took it back and Lowe's authorized a repair. Since then, it has been in the shop for the same problem every year. I would not recommend buying model number 12A1867Q1 Troy-Bilt 21" Self-Propelled Mower XP Extra Performance. Even the guy that repaired it stated that he was receiving several a day.

The mower was used one summer for about 1-2 hours. We have a townhouse with very little property. Bought at Lowe's in May 2012, emptied gas and stored inside over the winter. Added fresh gas and stabilizer in spring but it will not start. Repair facility claims stale gas and Ethanol for problem. Lowe's refused to do anything about it, but would send it out to be repaired at a $50 minimum charge. The lawnmower only cost $200. I refused and called Lowe's corporate. The store called back and said to bring the mower in and would issue a $100 credit towards repair. Mower cost $146 to fix and when I picked it up, they tried to charge me the full $146. After arguing and reminding Lowe's that I never authorized a $146 repair, they relented and gave me the promised $100 credit. But this mower is awful. No way does any mower run that short of a time period and need a carburetor replaced. Just a poor product and lame excuses. Beware of Troy-Bilt.

I purchased self propelled walk behind Troy mower in 2009 for light home yard mowing. Second season, the transmission failed and replaced for half of original purchase price. I used it for another 1 1/2 seasons and transmission is out again with same stripped gear failure. Machines should have been recalled and failing transmissions should have been redesigned and beefed up. They just keep selling same failing replacement parts.

I have the same problem everyone else has. The lawn mower never cranks when needed and after the fifth repair, they are yelling carburetor problem caused by gas, another $200 that the warranty will not cover. Also, the grass bag does not catch any grass. A big waste of my money for the lawnmower and extended warranty. Don't waste yours. I would give it a -5 rating if I could. Con artist in business.

I purchased a new Troy-Bilt mower from Lowe's in Opelousas, LA. On the second tank of gas, the engine stopped running. Then while restarting, the engine locked up solid. I took it to Lowe's in Opel where Mary, the mgr., said that it would have to go to Altaquip to be checked out. Then Danny from Lowe's in North Carolina said the engine stopped because of old gas. He said it goes bad in 30 days and that ruined the engine because of the ethanol. Then I contacted Nicole on the Briggs and S web page and she said they could not do anything because the dealer didn't say it was faulty. So here I am with a new Troy-Bilt mower that doesn't run unless I give them another 300 dollars to change the carburetor to fix a new locked up engine. Never again will I got to Lowe's or buy anything Troy-Bilt or Briggs and Stratton. So much for customer service.

I purchased a weed eater a year ago and it does not stay running for over 10 minutes. Sometimes it does not start at all. I called the customer service department and they suggested I have it serviced, which I did 4 times. Each time the service company says it works. It does work for about maybe 10 minutes. It does not work now. I called the warranty department again and they said to bring it in. It obviously does not work consistently. A new product should work all the time. They are now refusing to replace the weed eater with one that works properly; therefore, they are refusing to honor the warranty. I want a new weed eater or a refund of my money.

I bought a Troy-Bilt Bronco Riding Mower from Lowe's a few years ago. The first year it worked fine, there was no problem cutting one time a week, about 1/8 of an acre. I changed the oil & filter on time, kept the deck of the body clean after use. I thought this would expand the life of this mower. But that next year it looked like there was one thing after another. First the deck belt came off, I replaced it. The steering wheel kept turning round and round, I had to replace the bottom gear. The drive belt broke, I replaced it. The idler pulley went bad, it damaged the belt, I replaced both. The battery went bad, would not start, I replaced it. And now it would start, the motor will not turn over. I replaced the starter and the battery. It’s just sitting for two summers. You pay as much money for these mowers; we should get more service out of them for our money. You pay a lot for the product, then you pay a lot to repair it - something is wrong. How can we keep buying U.S.A. products when others are building better ones? We have got to get back to the way we used to make things - where people have trust in what they buy. And for this mower, I am in between.

I bought a Troy-Bilt 24" snow blower at Lowe's in 11/11. It dd not snow in the northeast so I never needed to use it. When I cleaned my garage this year, I decided to try the machine and it started fine. About 5 weeks later, I started it again and it would not start. I took it for repairs thinking it was under the 2 year warranty, but now they are telling me that the problem is caused by bad fuel. When I called Troy-Bilt, they told me the carburetor could get varnished (read that, destroyed) if you leave gas in it for a month. They said it happens with all small engines, but this is the only problem I ever had. Customer service says they get these calls all the time. Sounds like they have a manufacturing problem and should stop blaming it on the gas.
First and only Troy-Bilt product I will ever have. Customer service was of no help other than laying the blame on the gas companies. They need to take responsibility for their product. I never had this problem with any lawnmowers, trimmer, blowers, etc. But of course, none of them were Troy-Bilt. I now have a new and unused snow blower that I have to pay to repair!

Since I can't get a complaint department from Troy-Bilt, I guess I will just vent here about how much of a piece of crap your 4-cycle gas trimmer is. I have only had the tool for 3 months and have had nothing but problems. It worked great for the first 6 weeks; it started like a charm and worked great. Since then, nothing but headaches. It won't start, constantly stalls and directions on winding string replacements are backwards. I have read the user manual to death and was amazed that I could get this thing to last 3 months. What apiece of crap. I generally considered Troy-Bilt to be a better brand, but not anymore. As I tried to contact the company, the only thing you can get is how to get spare parts or where to buy additional equipment. It is obvious this company has no intent on customer satisfaction or input.
As an American who would prefer to buy American-made products, I am ashamed as unfortunately, we have to suffer with second hell 10th rated products. I will never buy a Troy-Bilt tool again unless I receive some satisfaction from this company. However, since I cannot find any way to contact them, I guess they are done. I truly cannot believe how absolutely PO'd I am right now.

Let’s see. In 10/2011, the pulling wheel broke ($29) and then on 4/2012 the cable for going forward broke ($20). Then on 5/2012 the cable for making the engine run broke ($15). On 6/2012, the right plain wheel is cracked ($15). On 8/2012, the engine started to overheat. I check oil often and it’s okay, yet it just smokes hot. I think oil leaks from somewhere inside because I see small droplets of oil on the deck after running about 10 minutes. The bag attachment doesn't always close correctly and can blow bits of grass clippings out. If the side discharge plastic part is being used, it can just fall off if the grass is very high. I bought the product because it was made in Ohio, USA. So much for that thought.

In May of 2012, I got a new Troy-Bilt push mower at Lowe's. I got a one-year extended warranty because the woman said it would cover everything that could happen. Well it has been 3 months and the thing won't stay running. I had it sent off and paid Lowe's the $25 fee that I would get back if it was a defect. I checked at Lowe's about the mower and they said it was not a defect and my carburetor was gummed up.They said they could not fix the carburetor but could put a new one on for $130. I use the same gas can for all my mowers and have not had any problems. I told them to forget about fixing it. I won't be getting any more Troy-Bilt mowers.

I purchased a mid-range priced (well over $150.00) Troy-Bilt weed eater and it lasted 11 months. The repair costs and the fact you can only get parts from Troy-Bilt render it useless and disposable. I have a 20-year-old Echo that is still running, parts through Amazon are cheap and Troy-Bilt should be ashamed of themselves for selling trash that people get stuck with. It is going to the trash heap!

We bought our Troy Bilt mower at Lowe's in April 2012. It lasted 2 months. The belt came off the drive. So, we did not have a self-propelled mower anymore. When we started to take it apart to see if it could be fixed, we found out some of the screws had been screwed through the plastic front end of the mower and it resulted in the melting of the front, making it uneven and then eventually making the belt come off the drive.
When we contacted Lowe's, they said they couldn't do anything without a number from another person. When that person was contacted, they said they needed Lowe's to call and tell them what was wrong with the mower to see if it would be covered. Lowe's then said that they couldn't do anything. We bought the mower, because it was made in the USA. I think we will go back to buying foreign-made. They last longer. It will be a very expensive mower, since we paid over $300.00 on the first one and now we have to buy another one just 2 1/2 months later. Troy Bilt has lost a customer, and I will let others know of our experience so they don't have to go through the same thing.

This tractor is a pile of you-know-what. I bought it less than 2 years ago from Lowe's. First year it worked fine except the seat kept getting loose and was sliding. I bought it early September 2010, so I used it maybe 5 or 6 times. The next spring/summer we had nothing but drought and I used it one or two times. I have cleaned it every year for winter storage, draining the gas and even running the engine to burn off the rest. So it was a surprise to hear the warranty-listed mechanic tell me it was "bad gas" and that they had to flush out the fuel system and replace the needle.
This is not covered under warranty and I had to pay $115 after they finally fixed it (or so I thought), after over a month (they said 2 weeks) of it sitting at their shop which the Briggs & Stratton manual warns not to let gas sit in the fuel system more than 30 days or it will gum up. Hello! Of course the gas I put in it to start it up got bad. Five days later, I started it up to mow and nothing. I charged the battery like I did when I first pulled it out and still nothing. Dead. I have called Lowe's, Troy-Bilt, Briggs & Stratton and the mechanic, but no one will stand behind their product or work. I will never buy another Troy-Bilt product or anything built by Briggs & Stratton again.

This lawnmower lasted less than three months (five mows of a fairly small lawn) before it stopped working. It will no longer start. I bought a Troy-Bilt push lawnmower three years ago and it started doing the same thing after a year (approximately 15 mows). I continued to use it for another two years, but I had to take the plastic cover off and "mess with" the governor to get it started and had to do the same thing several times during each mow to keep the engine going. I thought maybe it was just a fluke. So, like an idiot, I bought a self-propelled Troy-Bilt and it started doing the same thing after five mows. I'm taking it back to Lowe's, but I doubt they can fix it permanently. I want my money back so that I can buy a different brand. My dad has a Murray riding mower and it's lasted him 11 years and counting.

I was very happy with Home Depot for a number of years and the staff service started to fall off. Also, building materials (2x4, etc.) started looking like inferior quality. I went to Lowe's. They bent over backwards to help me sift through good/bad wood, helped me load on the cart and helped me load the truck. The HD guys were usually nowhere around for that kind of service. Fast forward, I started going to Lowe's regularly. I bought a Husqvarna trimmer which works great after three years; but the pressure washers, not so much. The first Troy-Bilt had a Briggs and Stratton. It lasted three seasons before the pump gave out. It has a strong engine. It is now out of warranty so I cut my losses and got a new one with a Honda engine. It lasted halfway through washing my car with intermittent pump problems. They were hesitant about taking it back because there were traces of gas in the tank. Duh! Hello! They finally replaced it.
It worked great for about a total of 16 hours over a year. I didn't need it for a while, but when I started it up, there was no pressure. It was then out of warranty, so no recourse except to chalk it up to experience. I won't do Troy-Bilt (MTD) for anything. For the $450 I paid for it, I could have gotten: 45 automatic car washes, 10 full days of renting a unit at the local rental yard, four extra free days that I spent trying to fix it, four extra days that I spent manually doing things that should have taken four hours. So, I need a pressure washer that works over the long haul. I know most people here post the products they're dissatisfied with and probably don't return to the site to let us know what eventually worked for them, but do you have any recommendations on reliable manufacturers and models?

I bought this "thing" (Troy-Bilt Pony lawn tractor) two years ago from Lowe’s. It is nothing but a piece of junk. I also purchased a 3-year extended protection plan for $200.00. Lowe’s would not stand behind the warranty and neither would the provider of the extended warranty after only 3 months. They were always going to call back. I wore the phone out trying to get them to do something. This "thing" has caught on fire three times. The first problem was with the battery. It would not start. At that time, it was 2 months old. The deck had to be leveled. This was $100.00 for both the battery, leveling the deck and the pick-up and delivery.
I then purchased wheels to go on the deck to help keep it level. This was another $65.00. Then the wiring melted. I was able to tape it back together. It has caught fire three times in the last 2 years. I've been blessed to be able to put it out each time. This past week, one of the deck idler pulleys came off. I will never buy anything made by Troy-Bilt again. They do not honor their warranties and their products are junk. I had a Murray mower for 15 years and all I ever had to do was change the oil and replace the blades, and only once have I replaced a belt. I tell everyone I know about what I have gone through with this mower. It's gotten to be a joke in my family. It is hard not to be really upset with Troy-Bilt and the quality of the product. The weed eater is not cheap, it is not rocket science as far as design is concerned and by now, most of the kinks in the system (weed eaters) have been worked out. Right, but somehow, this company has been able to put some great kinks back into the system. The design of the cutting head, which holds the line, is just not up to the job. So after going through two of their top of the line toys in a matter of a week, at the end of last season, we made a change to what turned out to be the Troy-Bilt weed eaters in a yellow case.
These tools lasted only hours before becoming unusable. The flaws of the design are many, the price of the machine is too much and the quality is too little. Today, I got a brand new weed eater. Out of the box, it beat the pants off of the Troy-Bilt. It ran all day, cut like it should, line use was minor and refilled once. The Troy-Bilt was every 3 to 5 minutes. The price was good, the machine is a fine tool. It also has a red case like Troy-Bilt, but it only has 4 letters in its name. Troy-Bilt, get ready to get whacked. Weed whacked that is.

Troy-Bilt TB 57 Lithium battery trimmer - I purchased this expensive unit because I wanted a high quality product and didn't want to deal with gas or cords given that I have very little trimming to do. Troy-Bilt used to be known as a quality company. I used it 3 times the first year, 3 times the second year and started using it for the first time this year. I was still on the first spool of line that came with it from the factory. The spool, the spool cover and the part that spins at the end of the shaft that the spool and cover sit inside came spinning off, altogether. The plastic on the piece that spins is cheap and it just spun off the shaft, leaving a nut and the plastic shield at the bottom of the shaft, nothing else.
Well I've spent hours trying to get this repaired. Don't bother calling the Troy-Bilt helpline because no one will answer even if you sit on hold for 2 hours, which I did. I even took time off work to try to get through. I sent an email and received a generic response that did not address the issue, it says "you can order a new spool or a new spool cover". So I did what I should have done instead of buying this from a big chain, but didn't think to do. I went down to the local lawn and garden store where the landscapers get all their equipment serviced. The man at the parts counter said, "Wow, this is an expensive trimmer and we can't get any replacement parts. All they sell is the spool and the spool cover". Same story when I called half a dozen national companies that sell trimmers online.
So now I'm stuck with this very expensive trimmer that cannot be serviced. My life's lesson learned is that I'm going to go down to the local lawn and garden store, not a big faceless chain, which wouldn't help me either by the way, and I'm going to have the guys sell me a high quality trimmer that will last me a long time, that has parts that can be replaced and that they recommend for being bomb-proof. Save yourself money and time and do not buy anything made by Troy-Bilt.

It had a cotton bag plus a zipper opening with a screen backing for the grass and driveway and it would pick up everything.
Three years ago, I finally called to complain to Troy customer service (laugh). Today, April 16, I called again and the rep told me he talked to me three years ago and sent my complaint up the chain (I suggested they have a zipper slot installed in the bag with a screen backing that could be used when vacuuming grass, driveways, etc.). He also told me they still have no alternative bags so they continue to manufacture the same stupid design they did three or more years ago. I also asked about how to add a review on the Troy-Bilt website but he could not help with that either. Apparently, the company is the only one with access to write reviews on their products so the reviews are very slanted and of no value.
I tried to find the address for the CEO to send him my complaint and suggestion directly but that is impossible. Like most American manufacturers, they want us to buy their products and then go away. They do not want to hear from us and any suggestions or improvements to their products and not welcome.
When you make something for the first time, mistakes are expected. It is part of the learning curve. But when you make the same dumb mistake in mass production year after year, I lose all patience as I have with Troy-Bilt Corp.
So, the $600 Troy-Bilt vac continues to sit unused in my garage. My recommendation is to buy anything else but a Troy-Bilt and you will be further ahead.

Troy-Bilt TB90BC Weed Eater - I had an Echo Weed Eater for over 25 years and it never had any interruption in service, in fact it ran perfect and would start up every year. In 2007, I was in the process of moving and gave my old weed eater to my friend and neighbor who still has no trouble with it. When I moved to my new house in Western North Carolina, I purchased a new Troy-Bilt from Lowes. I had problems starting it after the second year. The spring assist cup came loose twice and melted the plastic all the way around and I had to get that replaced. Every year I have had more and more trouble getting it to start despite getting it serviced (out of my own pocket) many times. I called their customer service line and was told that there was nothing they could do for me because the warranty ran out. I do not recommend this brand to anyone! It is garbage!

We bought a new Bronco Troy-Bilt Tiller from Lowe’s in 2008. From the very beginning, it would sometimes yank back forcefully when trying to start it. Since I am new to tillers and since it didn't do it every time, I just thought it was something they did or I was doing wrong. I bought it late in the season so I didn't use it much. When I pulled it out in 2009, it did the same thing. Sometimes easy start, sometimes yank back.
One day, my wife decided to learn how to use it and when she pulled the cord, it yanked back so hard it broke her wrist! I looked at it a couple days later to see if she could have done anything wrong but really, what kind of tiller yanks back like that. So I tried to start it and it felt like it was going to rip my fingers off. It yanked back so forcefully.
I took it into the shop Lowe’s told me to take it to and they looked at it and said something was seriously wrong. After their repair guy having his hand almost yanked off, they were afraid to try it. They looked at everything they could and decided the whole engine needed to be replaced. Lowe’s did give me my money back and I tried to contact MTD for over a year about the medical bills. Finally, I got someone and he hemmed and hawed. I guess I will just have to get a lawyer for this if it isn't too late.
Since then, I have heard of 2 other Broncos doing the same thing. These used to be great machines but they are now made in China. They didn't even have an engine in stock, in this country, to replace it with. They were going to get it shipped from China. Pretty much all the companies are just crap now since they have outsourced everything. First and last Troy-Bilt I will ever buy.

I was surprised to read that Troy Bilt was turned over in ownership. I wished I’d known prior to purchasing.

I purchased the unit from Lowes in 2010, thinking like everyone else that TB had a good rep. I used the blower 1 time for maybe an hour (prob less) and started having a loss of power then it just quit all together. I was about finished with the job anyway, so I put the unit up till I had more time to deal with it. A week or so goes by and I pull it out and it cranks right up and runs. So, I put it away not sure what had happened. Got it out this fall, of course by now my warranty is out, (my fault) and cranked it and it ran fine for about 5 minutes then began the loss of power routine again. So I do some research and see that the ignition coil is a big problem with these, so I do some troubleshooting on the unit to find that is not my problem.
Finally, after tearing it all apart, I find that the problem is the intake valve is stuck open. I am able to free it and again it cranks and runs for 5 minutes or so, then I can actually hear the valve starting to seize again. After a few minutes of cool down, I can hear the valve actually pop and it reseat, allowing the unit to crank again for 2 min or so, it depends on how much throttle you give the thing, but seizes again. My guess is that the valve is bent slightly or that not enough oil is reaching the top of the motor. Since it only happens with the intake valve I am going with it is bent either from heat or just cheap parts. Moral of the story is I am like everyone else, throw it away and start again with a higher quality unit. Parts are available but by the time I buy the part, repair it and hope it runs better the second time, my ignition coil will probably die, which seems to be the most common problem with them.

3.)All belts wear because they rub on solid metal parts of the tractor.
4.)Springs that make the drive belts disengage when you push in the clutch broke within a year from rubbing on housing and belts.
5.) Engine carburator went bad at 2 1/2 years leaking fuel into the cranckase
6.) Constantly blowing main starting fuse - (not due to faulty wiring)
7.) Finding someone to work on the mower is next to impossible.

Troy-Bilt trimmers require that the valves be readjusted after using it for 10 hours and every 25 hours afterwards. This information is not provided on the outside of the box. This required an individual to take the motor partially apart, adjust both the intake and exhaust valves and torque the head back on correctly. Consumers who do not have the knowledge to perform such repair are required to have it done by a professional for approximately $35.00 to $50.00 (or more) on a $200.00 piece of equipment.
I called Troy-Bilt at 800-296-6215 explaining to them that normal individuals did not know how to repair and did not have the equipment. Also, consumers should not be required to pay $35.00 to $50.00 to have it repaired every month. Someone in the background told the individual I was speaking with to disconnect the phone immediately. I wouldn't consider Troy-Bilt equipment as a choice of quality.
Consumers only find out about this requirement after the product is purchased. It is a tolerance that is to be held within .004 of an inch, which may be the reason why consumers are also returning the trimmers when it won't start or run at the first attempt (more investigation needs to be conducted to determine).
At the same time, Lowes is just as responsible for not reviewing the products they offer to consumers.

I bought some Troy-Bilt lawn equipment and only used them a couple of times before I had to take them back to Lowe's. I bought the extended warranty, but that really did no good. The products were replaced with new ones when the same thing would happen all over again. I bought a riding mower and straight shaft weed eater, and within 3 weeks, I had to take them back again. They stopped running. With the mower, the deck bearing went out. The weed eater stopped running all together. I would get it started and it would die or would not give enough power to turn the head for the string. I don't understand how a company can keep selling things that keep breaking.
It would seem Lowe's would get tired of all the returns. I took the exchanges again and had only used them 4 times last year. I put them up for the winter, and lo and behold, I got them out to use again this year (1-year extended warranty) and used them 2 times and they broke down again. I took the weed eater back to Lowe's, and they would not exchange it at all. They told me they would have to send it out to be worked on and would take 3 to 4 weeks to be returned to me.
Now, I have to buy another weed eater in order for my yard to look nice. All the while waiting on a weed eater that has already been paid for. If I had known it was going to break down, I would have taken it back before I needed it. That way, I would not have to buy another weed eater. This will be the last time I buy Troy-Bilt anything.
The company needs to make right about this. I would appreciate some compensation on this. This makes me angry, because I feel like I have wasted my hard-earned money. Money is too hard to come by nowadays just for me to throw away on merchandise that does not work. Ask your self this: If you went out and bought something, don't you expect it to work?

So I took it apart after two days to put some new string in it. I thought, no problem. Well the ** spring came out from the top of it. So here I am now, four hours later, looking for the part. Apparently, part number: mc9228-md2012 has been discontinued. I bought this 2007 model mower new in May 2008 from a dealer and it had a 2 year warranty. In 2008, many parts became loose and have fallen off. In 2009, the deck belt shredded twice and was repaired under warranty for faulty pulleys. The gas cap was also stripped out and then replaced. In 2010, the muffler fell off in the yard because 3 out of 4 bolts came off (the 4th was busted off. How could that happen?). Again, the deck belt shredded 3 times and had to be replaced. Also in 2010, the gas tank threads were stripped, so under warranty, the tank and cap were replaced.
Now in 2011, while mowing the grass for the 2nd time, the blades quit running and we found the PTO clutch bolt laying in the yard. This bolt was sheared off inside the crank shaft. Upon further investigation, we saw that the metal is cracked where the motor mounts to and this cannot be fixed. We suspect the off balance of the motor put strain on the PTO pulley and over time, this may have caused the bolt to shear.
We went to the dealer and there was nothing he can do but talk us into buying a more expensive model. We cannot afford anything new at this point and we cannot afford to have this mower repaired. We do not know what to do.

I purchased a Troy Built 2 cycle weed eater with additional yard attachments from Lowes. The weed eater did not start well and leaked gas. Upon further investigation, I found a pinhole leak in the fuel line. Because it was a minor repair near the carburetor, I clipped the line and repaired it myself. The weed eater never really started well nor performed well after it got hot. After fighting with it a few years, I decided to replace it.
I liked the new 4 stroke with the power assist start because I had shoulder problems and let's face it, I owned a lot of power attachments that fit it which did not get much use with the previous Troy Built. I purchased the TBP6040 and was pleased with its performance, but like its predecessor, it got hot and had hot start issues. I pulled it out for its 3rd season and had gas running out of the tank again. I began looking for a fuel line leak when I noticed that the heat from the trimmer engine had melted a hole in the tank in an inconspicuous place. I have found no recalls but I am sure that I am not the only one whom this has happened to.

I own several Troy-Bilt product for my business and my personal use. I love the Storm 2840 Two-Stage Snow Blower for its power, ease of starting and snow-handling abilities. Having said that, the chute design and joy stick cable control are a lousy design. In heavy snow the chute pops off and the joy stick control will not stay positioned and generally decides on it's own where it will throw the snow.
I've read others' comments on this same problem. I've contacted Troy-Bilt's customer service regarding these problems and all they can do is provide a standard "canned" response which does not address either of the design flaws. There are other consumers who have complained about these same issues and I suspect that they all received the standard non-response.

I purchased a new Troy-Bilt battery operator weed-eater (trimmer) at Lowe’s. Right out of the box the battery charger didn't work, so I called their service department because on the instruction manual it stated: "Do not Return to Store, Call our Service Dept.” I called. And after a month and a half and several calls, I wrote the CEO of MTD complaining about their Service Department. There was no reply and now two and a half months later I am still getting the same answer. "They are on back order but you may receive it in 8 to 10 days."
Like many of the other complaints I'm reading on the internet, I won't be buying anymore of their products. My plan now is to go back to the store and buy another one ($175.00), take the charger out and hopefully it works and then put the bad charger back in the box and return it to Lowe’s. With enough returns it's very possible that Lowe’s will stop using their products. It appears that MTD is flounding on stupidity and that includes their CEO who is responsible for company operations. I certainly wouldn't recommend buying stock in MTD.

A month ago, I ordered two parts from Troy Built over the internet. The site stated I would receive my order 7 to 10 business days later. Well, 12 days later, still no parts. I called and explained I did not get my order. A Troy Built personnel gave me credit and I reordered the parts. I asked then if Troy Built would expedite my order free of charge, since the item was lost in shipment. I was told no. I asked if they would forgo the shipping charge, since I did not receive my first order as stated? I was told no. I explained that was poor customer service not to do so.
The Troy Built personnel indicated they are not liable for shipments getting lost. I stated you choose the shipper, I did not, so why am I being told it is not Troy Built's responsibility? No answer was given. I asked if, for the third time I did not get my shipment, could I get the parts expedited and I was told yes. I was told I would have my parts in 7 to 10 business days and last Thursday was the 7th business day. Well guess what, as of today, 10 business days later, no parts. So today I called Troy Built again. I was told the 10th business day would be this Friday, and that my order was half way across the country, and Andy with Troy Built did not know why, but he could not do anything until this Friday.
I explained it has been a month since I placed the org. order. Again, he stated nothing he could do until this Friday. I asked to speak with his supervisor, and he stated he is the supervisor. So I asked, "You have no supervisor?" Andy stated he was the supervisor, but would not answer my question about his supervisor. I explained it was poor customer service to treat a customer in this manner, and the least Troy Built should do was to send out the parts I ordered, and expedite the parts, free of charge, since one month later, I still did not have the parts I ordered.
Andy just kept stating it is our policy to wait 10 business days before we could do anything. I stated I was told last Thursday was the 7th business day, and now why is this Friday the 10th business day? Andy said it is 10 business days from the shipping day. I told Andy since he is the supervisor, and signs everyone's pay check, he should have training for his folks, so everyone is on the same page when they tell customers how long it takes to get their orders.
Andy just kept to his script of poor customer service, and the mantra of Troy Built policy. So here I am with no parts one month later, for the 2nd time. I will not purchase another product from them, and I will certainly let family and friends know about my poor experience with Troy Built. I figured if Troy Built spent $15 to $20 to send out my parts again, since one month later I still do not have my parts, I would have continued to purchase products from Troy Built.Troy Built has lost my business and a couple of thousand dollars I would have spent in purchasing their products, because they do not know the meaning of customer service, and/or would not spend $20.00. I had purchased stock from this company about 10 years ago. Today I am selling.

Purchased bronco garden tractor in July 2009. Transmission was bad. Lowes replaced it. Nine months later, started smelling gas in the garage but couldn't locate any source. In July, took breather off to clean and found gas standing in the carb throat. Tank had been but was now empty. Called Lowes and was told it wasn't any longer under warranty but to call the local service vendor.
They told me I had to bring it in and it probably would not be covered under warranty. Notified Trobilt and was told it was not under warranty. I would have to have it taken to a vendor to be checked. They will not pay for pickup and the warranty is expired. This machine now has to sit outside in the yard since it is a fire hazard if kept inside. If gas is left in the tank it floods out through the carb. I have to use minimal fuel in the tank and take the line off and drain it after each use to prevent gas leakage. I feel this tractor was a defective piece of junk when it was sold to me and should be pulled off the market until Troybilt is made to correct this dangerous problem. I bought a Troy-bilt Rider for almost $2300. Also bought a 21" Rotary Mower which also never worked right but I had never pursued that one. Belt kept falling off, I gave up on that one. The Rider was a different story. From the beginning, could not get the brakes to work. It was model # 13AP60TP766. The first 3 months. I could use it then the blades all froze underneath. Well, I let it go until the next season because I don't have a trailer to haul it back and forth.
So the next spring, Blades completely frozen. Had to take into Peabodys. He was mad. It was not a lawn mower he did not sell but I bought it over the internet and it said Lowes on it. Strange. I bought it factory direct. Well, they fixed that, changed the oil, and fixed a headlight which never worked. They also fixed the brake push button. Did a few other things also. They had it for weeks. Then something else went had to bring it in. The belt kept falling off. Brake not working again also. So there went a few more weeks. Then six weeks after out of warranty the trans went.
Well, I had to take it into a dealer again, and Troy-Bilt did cover it after I cried. That was Wade I think or Wally. So now it is out of warranty and last year brake still out. Had to change belts this year and blades. The same belt that was changed blew off again this year. So my friend got all the parts put in new round things and had replaced round things that were wobbly. The oil was changed every year. When he got it all back together again with another new belt he started it and it took off. They put it up and guess what fell off in pieces in his hands, the transmission again!
So I called Troy-Bilt again even though it is out of warranty. It tells me something is wrong with the machine. I told them I had a lemon. First Karen told me to take it to Peabody's again and they would see what they could do. Then Peabodys called me back and said Troy-Bilt called them to get the service records. They told them they would call me right back. Not to bring the unit in. I called back left messages and all sorts of calls. Waited all day for them to call back only to realize they never were going to call back.
Second transmission put in July of 2008. August of 2010 Transmission is gone again and other parts also due to the trans. Price of the new part 300. not including labor. So what, I go and put another no good trans in and have it go again in a year or two. Not me I am not that stupid. So I sit here with a piece of junk for the junk yard. Parts fixing it up this year from wheels breaking, belts, other things over 500. So a lawn mower that was supposed to last at least 15-20 years lasted 4 with lots of extra money put into it. I am on disability and get a small check so this has been a large setback for me. crooks. I did not know they were no longer the real Troy-Bilt and that they were bought out.
By the brake not working almost was killed a few times because it stuck. Also having the brake above the gas pedal is very dangerous. That was something I called and complained right away to the company about. Because of the change in design in many lawn mowers, it is extremely dangerous. When you are a heavy person riding up the sloped hill, but not too sloped, and you need to hit the brake because the lawn mower is stuck in a rut, can't hit the brake, if you raise your foot off of the gas the tractor will kill you. Two lawn mowers, repairs after warranty, time without lawn mower, loss of income from two neighbors lawns, trying to get someone to take in the lawn mower every time it was down. I had to pay for them. Financially, priceless! Fear of being killed a few times, priceless! Money, well a few k here or there.

By the end of the 1st summer of normal use, it looks like it's 4 years old already. The start of the 2nd season had to replace the magneto. Now, here we are, trying to start the thing, only to find a bent push rod already. Is every part on these tractors so bottom basement? I'll never buy another thing that has the name Troy built on it! I'll make sure to tell my friends of this great news! Buyers beware for sure! The Cost of Troy built pony,, $1,300, repair already spent on it, $400,,, Lessons learned,, priceless!

I bought a new Troy Bilt Super Bronco Tiller 2 years ago. I broke all the tines (16) and 4 sets of belts before I used the first tank of gas, it kept me busy ordering parts for it. I finally got tines for an older model and so far so good on the tines, but it still eats belts. The belts get together, locks up and you have to almost split the side frames to get the belts out. This requires taking out the engine mounting bolts and the bolts mounting the gearbox to the side frames and only then can you get out the lower pulley off the gearbox.
I called Troy Bilt and they said you must have rocks on your land because of breaking so many tines. And I told them I did but hadn’t ever broke a tine on the old tiller used it for over 25 years and finally the bearings went out in the transmission. It was a Gilson rear tine and I can’t remember replacing the belts more than 3 or 4 times and it never gave me any trouble. When I called Troy Bilt, all I got was the run around, and from what they told me, the warranty is no good because they won’t cover anything that was breaking and it’s my $800.00 loss.
They said I must not be putting the belts on right. When I first bought it the originals only lasted the first few feet and they got together locked up and killed the engine, so I told them whoever put on the originals must not have had them on right. The next 3 sets, I put on and they didn’t last much longer. I work part time at a small engine repair shop and I have seen as many as 7 of their lawn mowers there at one time.
I guess I’m not the only loser that bought Troy Bilt products. I bought an old Troy Bilt Horse and I don’t have any complaints on it. But the newer ones made by MTD are total junk and consumers need to know this and stay away from it, or they had better have a fat billfold. It’s the same with all of their products I’ve worked on. The belt guides and the idler pulley brackets are so flimsy, cheap made same as my tiller, when you engage the mower deck on their mowers, the idler pulleys pull down out of alignment and there goes an expensive belt.
Their design engineers have to be the most stupid people on earth and don’t have a clue on how it should work. I think they slept through their classes, or maybe they never had any classes on design on what makes it work properly. Do you know how I can get the word out to people about Troy Bilts junk built by MTD? Lowes sells this stuff religiously; I won’t buy anything by them ever again.
Oh, I almost forgot about their weed trimmers. What a joke and their 4 cycle and a lot worse, seen maybe 2 or 3 good ones out of hundreds that have been left there to work on, another one designed by idiots. I hope you do research on their products, and you will find at least 90% of it is a lemon. No

I changed out a drive belt on a Troy-Bilt riding mower, which is probably the worst of all riders to do this on. After I finished, the belt apparently got twisted around inside the part of the chassis. (That you cannot see inside). This made the mower's forward and reverse go backwards. I have changed hundreds of belts on other mowers with no problems. I am totally blown away that there was enough room inside the chassis channel for this to even happen. The entire machine is just poorly designed, and my rates for changing drive belts on these machines have just went up by another $75. Save yourself a headache and buy a John Deere!

The Model 8526 Troy-Bilt (MTD) Snow Throwers built between 6/1/2004 - 1/31/2005 have a design flaw that causes the entire drive train to lockup rendering the unit useless. They issued a Service Advisory MTD-028 to replace the entire drive assembly. The consumer is charged labor (1.5hrs for $100.00) and the warranty for the new parts is only 30 days, not enough to get you through the winter season. I had the "pleasure" of having this repair performed on 10/24/2009, and on 4/15/2009, while preparing the unit for storage, I discovered that once again the unit's drive train is seized. I looked around and ended up with a Troy Bilt 860 self-propelled mower. To my dismay, after less than a year, I have already had to work on the mower 3 times, the third being to disassemble it to find out the transmission is shot. Is there any quality control anymore? Does anyone care that consumers are spending hundreds, if not thousands of dollars of their hard earned money on what they assume will be a quality built product only to find out very shortly thereafter that nobody seems to make that type of product any more? I guess, maybe I ought to build my own, then maybe it would be done right. I take pride in my work. I wish everyone did. I lost time and money for the transmission and the effort to repair.

It's like they don't because they know one day you will have it running for about eight hours, after just checking the oil and, bam, biff, boom. Now, it is going to cost just as much to fix as the generator cost. Why does every other company that makes generators put low oil shut off but Troy-Bilt doesn't? The oil ran out and the engine stopped; the quote is 5-6 hundred dollars to fix. If it had the twenty dollar low oil shut off, I wouldn't have the problem. Talk about cutting costs. Troy-Bilt and Lowe's problem answer - I see all kinds of problems with Troy-Bilt items from Lowe's. One reason all of you are having problems like parts falling off of the gas powered units is from one huge problem! About 7or 8 years ago, Lowe's had a company named Huffy Services Inc. Yes, the bike company. They would do the unpacking, safety checks, adjustments, test, repair and whatever else needs to be done. I know this to be a true fact! I was a tech doing this job with Huffy Services. Every Lowe's store had at least one tech in the back of the store. Problem one was the way the Huffy workers were paid. We were doing piece work. The faster, the more you could make. No one ever checked our work! Never! It was a running joke with most of the Huffy techs on how to play with the work order codes or just say you checked a unit and you never did!
This is where the problems started. At my Lowe's store, I had pride in my work. 80% of the techs could not care less! About 4 years ago, Huffy wanted to sign a new contract with Lowe's asking to be paid more? Lowe's said bye! When Huffy lost the contract with Lowe's, huge problems and returns started with all Lowe's stores. The workers at Lowe's are not trained techs like we were! Most of them have no idea on what to check and how to assemble items. People that have riding mowers and belts falling come from when the mower was opened and removed from the wood crate. You can not use a fork lift to lift the unit off of the crate bottom! Lowe's workers are doing this now. This cuts belts, bends blades and shafts. This is why all the belt problems and vibration.
We went to school about all of this. We checked every mower to make sure that all bolts were tight. The cutting blade shaft bolt and all wheel bolts were torqued. I found all kinds of loose bolts on everything from Troy-Bilt and other companies. I am shocked that someone has not been killed with blades falling off. I still have all of my training manuals. Someone needs to sue Lowe's over this. I hope this helps.

Instead, I was told it was out of warranty (6 months) and I would have to re-purchase not just the single broken tine but an entire new set as they were sold in sets. Explaining that it broke the first time the tiller was used made no difference.
A six-month warranty was a six-month warranty even if it was in the middle of a frozen winter in the northern Midwest. I was told that I probably hit a rock which caused it to snap the tine. Reality is I was tilling a garden plot that was used for years and was basically sandy loam with absolutely no rock. The old Troy-Bilt company was great. They had great products and they stood behind them. When it was taken over by the bankers and bean counters, it was ruined. They have lived off the reputation that the original company earned and have duped the public by attaching the new owner's brand of customer support to the Troy-Bilt name.

My new trimmer that I had for approximately 45 days quit running and when I took it to the repair shop, they said there was debris in the carburetor and that troy bilt would not warranty that. They gave me the number to call and talk to them, they instantly said it was my fault and was not under warranty when. I asked to speak to a manager, three different people hung up on me when I finally got someone to put me through. I got a voice mail, I left a message a week ago and still have not heard back.

We bought a Troy-Bilt self-propelled lawn mower and trimmer at Lowe's a year ago. Remembering their name for many years thinking it was a quality company. How I was so wrong. Both are unreliable and very frustrating. I feel so duped by this crap company and crap products. I have attempted to contact them via their website to voice my concerns. Forget about it! I am most upset at myself for not researching the products I purchased. Maybe this will help inform the next sucker just trying to cut their yard. Totally my mistake, I can only warn the next poor soul to stay away from Troy-Bilt's terrible product.

The Belt on the blade continuously comes on as has since it was brand new. We pay from 60.00 to 120.00 every time it is fixed.
it is inconvenient and it cost alot to fix. I feel that it is a lemon.

I purchased TroyBilt self propelled Lawnmower from Lowe's $397.00. I had it less than 90 days and the self propelled unit stopped working. Called Lowe's Service Advantage they advised it was under warrenty and that I needed to take it to a service location to have it repaired. They have had the lawnmower for over 2 months.
I talked with a supervisor from Lowe's service advantage and Troy Bilt needed to have the transmission sent back to investigate if they will cover it under warrenty. As of now I haven't heard from anyone and I have no idea when I will get my lawnmower back.

I once bought a Troybilt trimmer. Boy was I naive. It was one of the worst mistakes I've ever made. The drive shaft has broken 3 times; the first 2 times while it was still under warranty. I can assure you it was not due to user error as the drive shaft broke while the trimmer was simply idling.
The repairman said they get Troybilt trimmers in their shop every week and that the problem I was experiencing was very common as Troybilt uses cheap parts. The 3rd time the drive shaft broke, I was left holding the bag as the trimmer was no longer under warranty. What a piece of crap they made! They really should just stop and quit ripping people off.

At that time he told me Troy-Bilt used Briggs and Stratton engines which are great but the rest of their parts are cheap. Since then I've replaced the belt two more times and now have to tie the control cable in a knot to get it to start. I have never completed one lawn since I bought the mower and it's now September. I've written the parent company MTD about returning the mower, but they refuse saying their policy is no refunds, just keep fixing the problems.

Bought a Troy-Bilt Self-propelled Lawnmower from Lowe's, Salesman said it was 'the best'.. 3 months later it is in the shop for a bad transmission on the self propelled portion. It's been there a month and now they are telling me the part is on back order and will be another month at least. In the meantime I am paying a lawn service to cut my lawn because of the piles of crap Lowe's is selling? $450 down the drain - should have gone with a genuine Honda Mower... So Frustrating!!
I need to pay a service for a job that I could be doing with the lawnmower which was sold to me as 'the best'

I purchased a 25 horse power troy built lawn mower. I have had nothing but problems with it since I bought it. The first problem I had was carburator problems. I was told this wasn't covered under the waranty. I then had problems with every safety feature on the machine. I started replacing them first, but it got too expensive, so I by-passed them.
The mower, when running, can be started without being on the seat, the mower works in reverse, the mower will work any time the engine is running. When I first bought the troy built tractor, I thought it was built by troy built. I later found out it was built by MTD. If I had wanted an MTD machine, I would have purchased one to begin with. This is absolutely the worst mower I have ever owned, and I will never purchase another product built by MTD, or troy built, even if I have to buy an antique rolling blade push mower.
This piece of junk has cost more to keep running than the $1900 sale price I paid for it. The deck has worn out and gouged the yard, I have cut myself on all the pieces of worn metal several times. The whole front end of the body has falled off several times. I have put sheet metal in places and used sheet metal screws to keep it lookin reasonable.

The people have never heard of the word quality. They think that people are stuck with their products because they have some deal with Lowes. The engineering is pathetic. Even if they had workers at their plants who cared about quality, I don't think it would matter. The concept of everything they produce, from engineering to production to product support is abysmal. I wonder if anyone from this company has ever tried to take care of their yard using such poorly designed-manufactured-supported products.
Anger, frustration, growing belief that all American-made products are poor, desire to move to another country where people give a darn about their products and their name.

We own a mower that has been a maintenance nightmare since 50 hrs of use. Barely a cutting goes by that a pulley bearing, belt, spring, steering linkage, etc., fails, not to mention all the plastic parts that have broken that hold the sheet metal parts together. Also the seat is cheaply made and the cushion separates from the pan.
It is approximately $140. to replace! It is a shame that this product can not be utilized with any degree of confidence. We will never purchase any product manufactured by MTD again!
