When you buy a $12K refrigerator, wait MONTHS for it to arrive, and then within two months see the double doors misalign, the water dispenser start erratically dispensing on it own causing a flood in your kitchen, the drawers get stuck and dislodged, would you recommend this product to another? NOT EVER. I would kick this hunk of junk to the curb if it wasn't already bolted in. To add insult to injury, their customer service provided an estimate of at least one month for a technician to arrive and address and active water leak. DO NOT BUY!

Ordered 10k Sub Zero fridge in June 2021, reps told me there may be a delay and delivery wouldn’t be until April/May. Ok, Covid delays… Fridge didn’t arrive in April or May, then given a absolutely for sure delivery of 30th June, 13 months after my order was placed and paid for. Called this week to arrange delivery, now told August 20! Product is good, but so are others, if I known they would not deliver I would have gone elsewhere. Kudos to deliberately misleading/lying salespeople for good job of taking my money and caring less about when the fridge would be shipped. Never again will I purchase anything from subzero, I can almost forgive the delays, but the blatant misrepresentation about delivery is inexcusable. So much better out there.

I would like to share my experience with the Sub-Zero fridge: Legacy Model - 36" Designer Over-and-Under Refrigerator/Freezer with Internal Dispenser and Ice. We had a brand-new subzero refrigerator installed in January 2022, and when we moved in March we found to our surprise that was not working. We were provided by sub-zero with a "specialist from Dalton service in Albuquerque ". He came and found a leak. After 2 weeks the refrigerator quit working again. Another trip from the specialist identified another leak. After 1.5 weeks the refrigerator quit working again.

The third visit with the"the specialist" identified the third leak but at the end of the "repair session", the refrigerator was completely dead. No not only the fridge was not working but now the freezer too. "The Specialist" was unable to tell me why, but he told me that he is going to have the issue resolved on Monday. A week later when I called Dalton's office they told me that the next available visit is 3 weeks from now. When asked to speak with a supervisor I was told that the supervisor is on the other phone. I have reached subzero support by phone and email. Suffice to say they were completely unsupportive and unhelpful. In the last 3 months this fridge work for 3-1/2 weeks.

We just did a remodel and had a 36", I believe it was a 650 then. It had a single door, not French, and a freezer below. It still was good when we got rid of it, but thought we should use the same space but get the newer model. I had to buy two different refrigerator/freezer for two different homes we have this year. The other one was about $3900 and has more cu. ft than this taller Subzero model. I know it is cabinet depth but the Bosch has moveable shelves, not just laterally, but also they are divided in the center, so you can move one shelf in the middle to a different height. You have the ability to have shelves at different heights ie. if you have tall bottles of say champagne, you can have half the shelf lower, and half the shelf much higher to accommodate taller bottles.

The subzero doesn't have the flexibility and the shelves are all one length; so if you wanted just a portion of the shelf to be for taller items, you can't do that with Subzero unless you dedicate the whole shelf to one long shelf with lots of room. The compartments on the door give me less space to put things in than my single door Subzero. Some of the door compartments are so narrow that I can get a single line of bottles in it only and some are smaller. My other refrigerator has a cold water spout inside the refrigerator, not on the door, which is great. I don't mind that ice and water aren't on the doors as they are potential problem creators, but on the inside of the side is quite convenient. The freezer compartment on my other refrigerator is far superior.

Subzero has the real untreated stainless and is difficult to clean. The other unit I have does the newer finish so you don't have to constantly be getting out a chemical to remove the fingerprints. I think Subzero is resting on its great reputation but I think their merchandise is old fashioned and stale. I doubt whether I will ever need another refrigerator in my lifetime, but hope those that do read this review and know what to look for to get a better style and more useful refrigerator/freezer or I hope Subzero evaluates this review and redesigns the interiors. That can't be difficult in the scheme of things!

I purchased $25,000 + Refrigerator, range, oven, microwave & dishwasher from Wolf/Sub-Zero & qualified for their rebate program. It was difficult to say the least to register their products that they market but aren’t their line. Hours upon hours on the phone. After numerous run arounds & supposed reissues, I still do not have the promised rebate. Each time they ask me to wait 30 days & then up to 4 weeks for a reissue. It’s pathetic. I’ve moved 15 time in 35 years & have had 2 sub-zero refrigerators. They are no better than Whirlpool or any other brand. (Except GE, they are horrible.)

I believe that SubZero Wolf rests on their history of quality & service which they fail to continue to meet. SubZero refrigerator has only a few options, you have to open the door for water or ice thus using more electricity. They have done little to keep up with the competition on consumer conveniences. Not worth the additional money unless you must. They aren’t who they once were. Their Great American Kitchen Event rebate appears to me to be a scam. Very disappointed.

We want to use other brand due to a new one cost about $12,000 to 13,000, but the refrigerator hole didn't fit others or don't look right, so we end up get another Subzero refrigerator hoping it last another 20 years. Just before the two-year warranty out, the water leak from the bottom, the tech came and clear it, the same time he found one of the LED light was out and replace the bulb.

In May 2020, the drain clogged again and is out of warranty. My old one had not clogged once. The new has a filter there for the pure air system needs to change about every two years cost $55, this expense my old one did not have. Plus my old one door will close by itself, this one will not. After the door close, the air inside suck and will not allow to open at least five minutes, very inconvenient. It looks like the old one has better quality than the new one. With so far that much problem is not worth the money. We need to have longer warranty to cover the repair costs.

We wanted an integrated fridge when we remodeled. Sub-Zero was the only brand that had a truly integrated model. The fridge works great but the freezer is a nightmare. I have had factory service done repeatedly on the freezer. The defrost cycle makes the ice defrost and then refreeze in a big glob. Food defrosts and refreezes over and over. Unless you want to use everything in your freezer within a week or less, you are left with unusable globs. The company says the fridge is working normally. Really? Our new Asko dishwasher starts almost every time you close the door when you are just loading it. They have replaced two sensors and it still does the same thing. It has leaked twice on our wood floor. It has been a terrible purchase.

We were hesitant to buy second Sub Zero refridg/freezer combination because of the loud compressor noises from their 2 compressor systems. However, the appliance dealer convinced us that the new ones had corrected that problem -- and in fairness-- they have. However, when I realize that the Sub Zero French door 42" model we did purchase cost more than twice what I paid for my first new car (a '64 GTO, by the way), I now feel I should have bought a new car instead! Nothing but problems, including a total replacement of the unit 3 months after it was first installed.

First, the magnets embedded in the freezer door, used to keep the door snugly closed, were installed backwards -- causing the door to be pushed away from the front of the freezer. This caused the freezer to continually ice over and render the freezer inoperable. Next, the freezer door iced over on its skids -- causing a larger and larger ice build-up and, ultimately prevent the door from closing completely. Next, the gasket on the freezer door tore and had to be replaced. Most recently, the ice maker stopped working. A call to Customer Service indicated that we needed a replacement water filter. Unfortunately, their user manual CLEARLY states at least three times that the light on the display panel should be blinking -- and it wasn't. Customer Service representative said she was sorry, but the manual was wrong. Give me back my GTO!

Sub-zeros are overpriced luxury fridges. For the price, they deliver a status look. Do they deliver a better product? The 2 we have owned over the ages can be temperamental. The first one needed a new condenser; during the servicing we learned that Sub-zeros should be moved only by professionals. The current one has a water condensation drain scheme that's faulty by design and clogs. As a separate water-handling defect, the vegetable bins condense too much water and pool, causing food to rot. Otherwise, aside from the regular maintenance of vacuuming off the heat exchanger, the fridge has been fairly maintenance free for near 10 years.

We have a problem with constant build-up of ice at the bottom of the refrigerator section behind the crisp drawer. Also the drain tube gets blocked with ice. Subsequently, condensation water is dripping from the refrigerator and in the long term it damages the door rubber gasket which need to be replaced at a high cost. We have to defrost the refrigerator and drain pipe 3 to 4 times a year. We set the temperature at the recommended level, no luck, we increased it by couple of degrees, no improvement. We replaced our built-in Sub-Zero in 2015 with what we thought was going to be a newer version of the BI 36U/O RH model. This NEW VERSION IS TOTALLY DISGUSTING AND DOES NOT WORK!!!! The very worst thing about it is that there is no self-closing mechanism on the freezer drawer as there was on the older version. In other words: how many times has my husband gone to get ice for his cocktail and pushed the freezer drawer to close BUT it does not slide in all the way? SO the freezer and refrigerator heat up. The older version stated this on page 20 of its instructions: "Your freezer drawer has a self-closing mechanism. The incline, built into roller assemblies on the drawer uses gravity to assist in closing the drawer."

The newer version DOES NOT have this self-closing mechanism, I was informed. What stupid, pathetic engineering idiot decided to do away with this feature in the newer version???? I would love to know why that decision was made since the occasions when the freezer drawer does not shut totally are still numerous -- even four years after purchase of the newer model for thousands of dollars????

Although we have had these models for over 18 years, they have needed many repairs to keep them working. First, the good. The compressors have lasted without failures. Bad: the evaporators in both units failed within 5-7 years, the electronic modules use substandard relays for switching the compressors on and off (contacts welding due to excess starting current), defrost heater failed on the freezer when the evaporator failed. It is very inconvenient when a refrigerator or a freezer fails so I would hope that these VERY expensive units would be built for a lifetime like the GEs built 70-80 years ago.

Do no waste your money on Sub-Zero water and ice maker. We inherited a Sub-Zero when we bought our house and it was 30 years old. About 3 years ago it started to have issues so we decided to replace with another Sub-Zero since our previous one lasted so long and "upgrade" to the water and ice maker. We just assumed that Sub-Zero would be top of the line for everything. WE WERE VERY WRONG.

The ice maker either jams or the ice shoots out so fast and all over the place. Then every now and then an ice cube will just drop out and if nobody is around, it melts and cause a puddle to form where you put the cup and drips down our wood panels. We have had several service calls and everyone tells us it is just the way it is designed and the defrost heater caused the ice to melt a little and then the cubes stick together. And the cubes are so big they don't fit through the hole very well... especially when they start to stick together. Smaller cubes or a bigger chute would help. So basically, there is nothing we can do... just a very poor design.

Our friends also bought a Sub-Zero with ice dispenser in the last 2 years and they say the same thing. We just bought a second fridge for the house (LG) with another ice dispenser and it works wonderfully. How can a company that makes a fridge at 1/6 of the cost have a better design than a $12000 refrigerator??? So unbelievably disappointed in our purchase and Sub-Zero has done nothing besides connect us to a service provider that says nothing can be done. Seriously people, DO NOT WASTE YOUR $$$.

New Subzero side by side - Very good looking and apparently well made. It was installed Saturday. The instructions say it takes 24 hours for ice to be made. The next day I tried to get the ice container out to see how much ice was made. The door does not open wide enough to pull out the container. I had to maneuver it a few different ways to finally get it out and then to get it back in. I called the service department for the selling company. He said there is no adjustment and it is a common complaint. Extremely stupid.

We bought our side by side Sub-Zero 690 late in 1999 and it is still going strong. we have had repairs under $500 in that time frame. We are looking to replace it only because we are redoing our kitchen. The service person who was out a couple of years ago said that they often see Sub-Zeros work well at age 30! We bought a double wolf oven a couple of years ago just because we have had such a good experience with Sub-Zero, Having said that many people have also suggested that the newer appliances are not as reliable as older models.

We purchased all Sub-Zero/Wolf/Asko kitchen appliances several months ago through Ferguson, both supposedly reputable American companies. The Sub-Zero promotion gives the customer the choice of several free smaller appliances (i.e. toaster) and a $1,000 gift certificate in return for buying all Sub-Zero products. In order to redeem from Sub-Zero we had to submit a redemption form, proof of purchase, serial and model numbers. We submitted everything requested online, as requested by Sub-Zero. We waited several weeks and followed up. We were informed a claim was never made. We resubmitted everything again and again we informed the claim was not received by Sub-Zero.

Our claims were never bounced back due to using an incorrect email address. We have submitted our claims three times now, both online and now by mail. Each time we call the claim dept, rep says they have no knowledge of our claim. Our conclusion is Sub-Zero has no intention of ever honoring their offer and the promotion is bogus.

In fact she told me to call on Monday to the same phone number and ask for a "product specialist". I think they need to change their website and state that no one is available on Saturdays that is knowledgeable. Fortunately the problem is only one of not making ice, so it can hold but if I had an extremely pressing problem, I would expect far better. This Sub-Zero is 7 years old and was $10K.

Purchased our Sub-Zero and Wolf. Freezer gasket would create vacuum seal making it hard to open which is good, our fridge side never did that upon opening. He replaced the freezer side gasket with a bigger one to line up the two doors because the fridge door stuck out more than the freezer side, the problem is now neither side creates vacuum when you close it and try to open it again, which tells me that neither door is sealing properly, also ice and frost is building up in my freezer. Plus I conducted three other tests and the seals on both doors failed all three tests. So I had a professional come out to fix the problem and he made it worse, now my compressor runs a lot more and I noticed the vent above is hot and it never was before. We had problems with our oven shutting off on us. After three different servicemen the problem is finally fixed, but now one of the stoves igniter keeps on clicking even when the stove is off.

Please whatever you do don't buy these products, if you have a problem the service people are not trained well enough to fix the problems. We bought these products because they are suppose to be the best, but honestly I am so stressed out I feel like crying. My wife is sick to her stomach. We just want to throw this stuff in the garbage, because it's too painful to go in our kitchen. We have to call service again and this is about the 8th or 9th time they have been out and the range and the fridge are not even a year old. We have had more issues with our appliances than all the appliances we have owned in the last 40 years. The whole reason we bought this is so we can have peace of mind and instead I have to go see a shrink to cope. Take heed to my warning. Please. It's a lot of money and it's not even close to worth it. Believe me.

My fridge (BI36U) cost nearly $10,000 and is falling apart after just three years. I feel so ripped off. What the heck happened to this brand? My in-laws have had their Sub-Zero for decades and have only had repairmen come out recently. This company is coasting on an old reputation that is just not true anymore. In the time I've had it, again less than three years, repairmen have had to come twice. One is here right now which is what has inspired this lovely rant! And like others on this forum, I've needed to do various things myself, like emptying my entire fridge and sitting there with a hair dryer to get the ice inside to melt.

Folks, this fridge is exactly like the sports car my husband had when we first met, it was constantly in the shop for one expensive repair or another, requiring special parts and expertise. Except this fridge is not fun when it is working, it's just a fridge. Mine was a high end kitchen design. My kitchen is all over Pinterest and sure, the Sub-Zero looks good in the photos. But now when I look at it, I feel like a big sucker. If you actually want to use this fridge in real life, be ready for a headache.

I purchased both Sub-Zero refrigerator and Wolf 48 inch oven in 2008. For past few months the Wolf oven wasn't working right and would take longer than usual to warm up and I didn't have time to call for service until my Side by side refrigerators stop working and everything melted. I panic and didn't know what to do and how expensive would be to fix it.

Then I thought instead of calling the technician I will call Sub-Zero to see what kind of suggestion they have. To my surprised they have 24 hours toll free number. I called them and explained to them the situation regarding the refrigerator and then since I had them online told them about the Range. I cannot even believed how helpful and understanding and wonderful they have been through this process.

First, the lady guide me and helped me to do some test on the refrigerator and got it back to work. She said somebody play with it and put it on showroom mode (that was our maid when she was cleaning it). Just imagine if I would of call outside technician what kind of cost and problem I would have, and then she authorized a technician to come and inspect the refrigerator and the oven without any charge.

The technician arrived on time and he was very polite and very professional and after inspecting both appliances he told me the dual oven needs one of the heating element on each one is out and needs replacement and some other part for refrigerators needed to be changed. I called the 24 hours customer service again and they said they authorized the part and the labor.

I was amazed with their professionalism, care and politeness. They did not have to to do any of these thing but they did it because they take pride of American made product and excellent reputation and amazing customer service. My refrigerator and my Wolf Range got fixed without any question or headache. I know both brand cost more but it is worth every penny in a long run. My suggestion is if you have problem with any of the product first call the company before you call any repairman.

When we decided to renovate our home in 2003, we had limited space for a kitchen in our small urban home. With space being at a premium, we decided a big boxy-style fridge would just not work, so we looked into buying a Sub-Zero. We cook a lot, and buy lots of produce at our local farmer's market, along with many condiments for making lots of styles of food. We needed a fridge that was not big, but not small either. We ended up buying a used 550 off of a refrigerator repairman for $2,000. He had refurbished it and the price included a 1 year warranty. My husband built a cabinet especially for it, custom door panels, side panels, and matching cabinet above. It looked great, just what we needed. We loved the shelves, the two egg trays on the door, the deli drawer and the ice maker.

We found the vegetable/fruit drawers too shallow, and ended up with lots of vegetables on the shelves above and below the drawers, which cut into space for everything else. The specs say the 550, 36" wide, bottom freezer drawer, has 15.7 cu.ft. of refrigerator space and 6.4 cu. ft. of freezer space, for a total of 22.1cu. ft. That is a reasonable amount of space, and not different than the old side-by-side GE we used to have. In 2008, the ice maker stopped working, and the same repairman who sold us the unit came back and installed a new WATER VALVE for $38.00 parts, $70.00 Trip charge, and $180 for labor. With tax it came to $291.00. Great, ice maker working again, all is good. But there were other annoyances with the refrigerator that we just chalked up to buying a used unit - one was mold. It seemed to creep in from the back of the refrigerator, landing on jar lids, inside corners of shelves, inside the dairy cubbies on the door.

No sooner would you do a full clean up and wipe down the whole thing with diluted Clorox and it would be back. Then there was the pan under the unit, annoying to get to, but we needed to check it every so often, as we were afraid it would fill up and wreck our kitchen hardwood floors. Then the cleaning of the upper grill, always catching dust, which looked bad, and the coils inside the upper area had to be cleaned too. This would be fine if you had cleaning help to do this but sometimes a two earner couple with kids cannot stay on top of these things. Then in 2015 the refrigerator is noisier than usual for a couple of weeks, and one day there is water flowing all over the wood floor in front of the unit, causing the wood to cup, just awful. Water spots appear on the drywall of the ceiling of the room below the kitchen.

The ice maker isn't working, and the ice cream is melted in the freezer drawer, obviously something has gone wrong with the freezer, so we call the guy we bought it from, but he never calls back, so I look for another repairman who will work on Sub-zeros in our area (not too hard to find as we live in a very urban setting in a major US city). The new repairman comes out, looks it over and says the Evaporator needs charging, and that there seems to be a leak in the freezer system. The total estimate to fix is $1,200, with a 3 month warranty on the work. As we are very busy and can't really deal with changing out the refrigerator at the time, we agree to have him do the work. He is there almost a whole day with his equipment consisting of a tank and long hoses, but in the end the 550 is up and running, including the ice maker.

We spend weeks tearing up the damaged floor, searching out boards to match the 100-year old original floor, new finish, etc, and do the best we can to make it look okay, although it was impossible to repair it to how it used to be, and to this day we see the "mistakes" in the floor thanks to the 550 Subzero leak. The downstairs ceiling also has to be "down" while the ceiling is repainted. It’s August 2017 now. The icemaker once again is not working. The mold is back in the refrigerator area. The white paint that we had repaired on the shelves is once again coming off, with the black metal showing through. We still stuff the vegetables in, but love the egg trays for our farm fresh eggs. But it is time to throw in the towel. And here is why I would never buy a Subzero again - the refrigerator doesn't really work well when you store actual food in it. Like a family-sized amount of food.

The whole system is designed around air circulation, meaning you have to only store shallow items on the top and bottom shelves of the refrigerator section. So I did a calculation of the actual area of storage in this unit, 36: wide, 24' deep, 84" high fridge/freezer. When you measure the actual space that jars and food items will fit onto the shelves, excluding the lips and the brackets, etc, the actual area for storage is: 12.4 cu ft. Fridge and 4.5 Freezer for a grand total of 16.9 cu ft. of space. It’s just not an adequate amount of storage space for the average family. Who can be constantly concerned that the items on the bottom shelf won't block the "airflow?" It's a refrigerator, for goodness sakes. I'm glad I did not spend an arm and a leg to learn the truth about Sub-zero. I hope to find a real refrigerator, one than can look after itself.

I've had my Subzero model 550 since 1994, when we remodeled the kitchen in our antique home. A 24" deep space between our cabinets and wall, with brick chimney behind, created the perfect slide-in location for our cabinet-maker to frame the 36" space for it. My repair records show numerous visits to fix and ultimately replace the ice maker, unfreeze the water line, replace the fan motor, and even to change the freezer light bulbs when they froze and broke off while trying to replace them. In the past few years, I've seen condensation and mildew appear in the dairy compartments where I store butter and cream cheese, and the magnetic door gaskets have developed mildew in their accordion folds. The icemaker compartment has been freezing the ice into solid blocks, indicating a leak in the line.

Three days ago, the dedicated circuit breaker on the fridge tripped off when the icemaker died. Authorized service technician removed underside panel to observe evidence of long-standing leakage from the freezer, with rust, mold, etc. I was told the unit was not worth repairing - "beyond its lifespan." While this was a big expense at $3,000 22 years ago, it's not one I'll repeat at $10,000 today. As others have mentioned, there are counter-depth models that will fit the space, albeit with some need to situate a decorative item on top where the compressor was located. The Subzero was 84" tall and all others (French-door, freezer on bottom) run about 70" tall. The technician laughingly offered me a $500 coupon which I declined. Now my issue is negotiating the purchase and installation of a new unit with a business who can competently hook it up and remove the Subzero.

Can't tell you how many times I had to thaw that out. This is a poorly designed unit and I probably put up with it for too long. Finally the freezer failed. I think it was the defrost timer. Not wanting to put any more money or time into it I decided to replaced.

OK so now the big complaint. A replacement Sub-Zero is over $10,000!!! A crazy amount to pay for a refrigerator that has few of the feature a $3K counter depth has. Unfortunately I had cabinets custom built for the Sub-Zero - 35 1/2" width and no 36" nonbuilt-in counter depth refrigerator will fit my opening. So I opted to have the cabinet rebuilt, spend the $3K for a Samsung 4 door highly rated counter depth.

You could actually spend less - around $2K and still get more features than the 10K+ Sub-Zero. You have to be a little nuts, maybe a built-in fanatic, or you have money to throw away to buy a Sub-Zero. Don't waste your money, plan a 36" counter depth into you kitchen design - 36-inch opening. You won't be sorry. Buy a much better-designed unit with many more features than a $10K+ Sub-Zero. Even if you had to replace it several times you would still be ahead of the cost of the Sub-Zero.

I am so disappointed in this stove. It is advertised as a commercial stove and that it is highly used by chefs in the restaurant business but I have not had any good experience with it! From the beginning I have had to call for service to be done and I have only had it a little bit over a year. The amount of repairs that have done are outrageous. I feel like I was sold a faulty appliance. The first time I had to repair it our oven light would not stop blinking for no reason. Fortunately the appliance company that has come to fix it has been very nice but I am getting so upset that I need to keep calling to get service done on it.

My mom that bought a $500 dollar stove has had no issues with her in the 16 years she has had it. Another time I had to call for service repairs, I apparently "spilled liquid too hot that melted the wires and it caused the burners not to start!" How can this be a commercial stove and how can restaurants be using this stove to cook when they spill so many liquids and their stove works perfectly fine!!! I am so unsatisfied with the outcome of this stove and I do not recommend this stove! I feel cheated from my money and would go back and return it if I could.

Second home ice maker also died and the line to the ice maker leaked into freezer insulation which froze. This caused condensation on side wall which leaked on hardwood floor. Fridge moved to basement, freezer turned off. Current Sub-Zero insulation on fridge door came apart at bottom leaking water on floor. Unit 7 years old and I am currently dealing with it. Next time I move if the home has a Sub-Zero I will not buy the house.

We purchased our Sub-zero built-in refrigerator with the idea it would last. The interior compartments are nice and food does stay fresh. That said, I would NEVER recommend the ice maker in the door model. The ice spits out at an alarming velocity and only works about half the time. We chose the wood panel doors and they started to peel and split within 2 months of installation. The repair took weeks and the doors have started to peel/split again. We are expecting sub-zero repairman today to check for possible leaks. The refrigerator cost more than 500 to install and the leak has been there since installation! I would not choose the same model again. I have been forced to stay home waiting for numerous repairmen, made numerous calls, and complained to the dealer more than once. Ours may be a lemon, but it has been a costly mistake.

The old unit had some issues with the ice maker and air compressor, but it was 20 years old. This new one works great. We have had it about 3 years and the only issue is that the fridge drain to the pan gets plugged and it makes the fridge very difficult to open (pressure from inside). This leak damaged brand new hardwood floors and leaked into a brand new basement requiring drywall repair and machines to dry everything out. The authorized appliance repair technician called Sub-Zero, put me on the phone with them and they authorized a new refrigerator on the spot. The leak was discovered Tuesday morning and by Thursday night I had a brand new refrigerator hooked up. Our Sub-Zero refrigerator was install new in 2000. The first two years it worked fine. Then we noticed that the gasket on the door was sticking to the frame of the refrigerator compartment. We thought it was poor housekeeping not wiping the bottom off the reefer compartment. Replaced the gasket on the door. Within the year the same thing occurred. Large puddles of water appeared every morning on the floor in front of the fridge and the bottom of the compartment was a rusty looking mess. Called the local authorized repair, which is also the company where we bought it, and ordered a gasket. We told the repairman about the morning puddle and he measured for the gasket. He told us there was another problem. There was a leak in the condenser coil and ice was forming inside the fridge on the back wall. Ice forms, ice melts in the defrost cycle, puddle on floor. Seemed pretty straight forward.

We asked about the rusty and ugly bottom edge of the reefer compartment. The repairman said we could try using white refrigerator paint. The very next day there was an even larger puddle on the floor. We called the company. The same repairman came out and took some pictures. Later that same day he called and told us that our fridge could not be repaired and that we should call Sub-Zero for some possible relief. We called and they offered a new fridge with a discount which still made the cost $6,500.00 about twice what we paid for the original and about a 40% discount delivery, installation and taxes included.

The unit was delivered to the local authorized dealer, Jetson's Appliances. They sent two installers to the house who looked at the situation, kitchen on the third floor, and said they could not install the new fridge. I pointed out to them that an identical unit was in place in the kitchen and had been put there by their company. The owner called and confirmed his installer's opinion that our reefer could not be repaired and remarked that his company had no record of our purchase. We do have the record on file. Sub-Zero stepped up and arranged for the installation, at no additional cost to us. We called Jetson's and requested the refund, almost $800.00, for the cost of a new coil installed in a unit that could not be repaired. Jetson's refused to refund our money. We have a small claims suit against Jetson on file.

The first one leaked water into the insulation and caused a massive mold and failure problem that Sub-Zero claimed was caused because the government would not allow them to install something that would keep this from happening. They replaced the refrigerator with another and tried to charge me $1000.00 for it. I stood my ground and they finally backed the warranty as stated, but told me I was going to be "put down in their records". The second refrigerator also had a massive failure about 2 years later and could only be serviced by Sub-Zero contractors. I was charged $50 for travel from to my house for the service because they said I lived so far away from their office although theirs was the closest around. They had 12 other customers that day that they also charged! It cost me $500 to fix the leak in the coolant.

Meanwhile the gasket for the freezer and the refrigerator are ripping and failing and we must frequently fix the drainage problem from the defroster that is a constant problem in these models. The drain freezes and must be defrosted. The problem is only discovered from a puddle on the floor, water and ice under the vegetable drawer. This is starting to cause rust problems now. I thought I was at fault until many on the internet with the same problems. About 3 years ago Sub Zero / Wolf came up with the Factory Certified Service. In Wisconsin they took away the ability of all small service companies to service the product line in warranty. They went to 1 service company in southern Wisconsin. So, the long term part of all of this is that any small business trying to work on the line will be forced out before they can even start. Good Technicians are hard enough to find but, to not allow small businesses to survive is just wrong. Sales drives this company not service. Our business was closed due to our disagreement with a salesman. They clearly stated that, as the only way we could come back is "If the salesman would approve it". I would not recommend a product line that limits the number of servicers, this will only increase the price of repairs.

I thought I was alone, but after viewing the other reviews, I needed to make a comment. We moved into a home 4 years ago with a beautiful kitchen and what we thought was an upscale appliance; our subzero 500 series. This refrigerator is very nice looking on the outside, and that is where it ends. The freezer drawer rusted, and has been replaced twice. The humidity setting is high, causing mold. We too have been experiencing the ice and water issue on the bottom behind the vegetable drawers. We have also experienced this water leaking down into the freezer, causing the freezer door to freeze shut. The water has also leaked onto the floor beneath, causing water damage on the floor, as well as the ceiling below. We have had numerous repairmen out.

Subzero had acknowledged the problem and their idea of a fix was to place a heater on the base of the refrigerator. This time around on repair, the 1st repair company told us that the problem is not able to be fixed and that the heater does not work. Because we have a home warranty, a second opinion was requested. That company conferred with subzero directly, and suggested a heater be placed, however, this may not fix the unit, it is only a band aid (as stated from a representative of subzero). We are now in the process of dealing with our home warranty company and coming to an agreement with a replacement. They do not replace brand name for brand name, which upset me at first, but after reading all of the reviews here, I think I will be very happy with a brand OTHER than Subzero.

This Subzero was installed in 1997 at a cost of $4800 (fridge on top, freezer on bottom). We moved into this house in 2001 and I wanted to bring our brand new side-by-side from our old house with us, because I had a suspicion that the subzero brand was poppycock. My wife and her stupid women friends were smitten with the brand, gushing at the "Subzero" stamp as it was a Greek god. Give me a break. I wish I could have shown her the consumeraffairs.com reviews posted here and sent this piece of junk to the scrapyard like I wanted.

We started having ice build-up behind the bottom fridge drawers soon after moving in, which we discovered only because the drawers were frozen shut one day. The fridge was still under warranty and Subzero sent a repairman. The parts were covered, but the labor was not. That repair cost me $800 in labor. Granted, it was quite a job. He had the whole thing laid out in big pieces and was actually welding something at one point. The repair was ridiculous, and the repairman had a lame explanation that subzeros are complicated.

Yet the problem continued. I endured years of screeching by my wife about how wonderful the subzero was, that somehow the problems were my doing. I learned to unplug it, which was a huge problem because the plug is partially blocked by the condenser/motor unit above the fridge. Fortunately we had a second fridge that the subzero replaced, an old Frigidaire that the Subzero replaced...that is relevant because at least 3-4 times a year, we have to empty the fridge and freezer to let it thaw out.

I read about all sorts of remedies to freezing problem like buying a permanent heater, or what I did, put a copper wire through the corrugated tube that is the drain from the fridge that goes behind the freezer and into the drain pan. That bought me six months without needing to melt the thing all over again. I've had severe rust at the base of the fridge, above the freezer, where the ice is melting. I sanded and repainted it with metal paint and years later, is still holding up.

The ice maker stopped working years ago. Meaning, it would make tons of ice, but it would not stop. This is our fault - I am pretty sure one of my kids jammed the freezer drawer shut with a box of something in the way, and sheared the ice stopper arm off. However, I cannot buy a replacement arm. I have to buy a completely new unit for $35...but only from a Wolf Subzero supplier located in Chicago. Every time I think to call them, I am at work and they require my serial number before they will sell me a replacement part. I just think this shows what a horrible company this is...let me buy the part and trust that I am willing to try to install the unit by myself, without incurring another $800 labor charge. All the lights went out and I figured out after researching on the web that it was a simple fuse switch thing that cost me $5 to replace using gasp, an unofficial subzero part. I'm sure I saved $200 in labor and they would have charged me $100 for the part.

As of today, the left drawer is frozen shut, while I was able to get the bottom right drawer out before the glacier got too large and froze around it. My wife has finally accepted that Subzeros, like Greek gods, are fallacies created by man. She shocked me today and we just bought a $2,000 fridge from IKEA that is made by Whirlpool and is counter-depth like this one, but a side-by-side. It is being delivered tomorrow and after many years of suffering with this piece of garbage, my pain and suffering will be over.

Recently the refrigerator compressor went out and the labor only cost for the less than two hour repair was $650 plus two service calls (one to diagnose) of $150.

You must use the certified repair company in the area for warranty problems and they charge 2-3X for Sub-Zero repairs (because no competition). The new compressor failed within 48 hours and had to be replaced a second time. There was no sense of urgency regarding my down fridge and it was out for 17 days. Our Sub Zero, installed when we built our house in 1982, is now 32 year old. Over the years, it needed ONE service call for a recall on the evaporator and has functioned without incident. I did overhaul the unit in 2005 with some new interior shelves, parts and replaced the door seals which typically start to lose their ability to seal. Now the unit has a freon leak in the refrigerator which is NOT practical to repair and R12 freon is becoming scarce and expensive. So it's time to say goodbye to a great performing appliance. But, I must say, over the years I've called Sub Zero a few times to ask questions about the unit, and their customer service has been exceptional. They finally found a good local service company in South Florida which has also been excellent - KENCO Service.

Our Sub-Zero freezer grew an 8 inch deep ice pack into the drywall behind it. When we purchased the home we noticed dripping water underneath the freezer side. When the repairman came to take a look he pulled and pulled and it took him over an hour to pull it out just to see what the problem was. He thought it had been screwed into the back wall, it was so hard to get out. Finally we all heard a huge tearing noise and it finally came out. We were all shocked that it had grown an 8 inch deep 14 inch circular ice pack through the dry wall behind it and into the drywall from the coat closet on the other side of the wall. Even though it was under the time limit for the warranty, Sub-Zero said it was not transferable to a new owner. The repairman plugged up any holes where anything entered the back of the freezer and said that should fix it.

A couple years later when it began leaking from behind again and was pulled out the ice ball was back. This time the repairman covered the back with an insulation material and said that should fix it. Today I noticed some water on the floor from behind the freezer cabinet and am very fearful to have it pulled out again. Aside from that major problem I've had to replace both the expensive freezer and refrigerator door gaskets several times and the ice maker was replaced twice and currently isn't working. Any repairs myself is cost prohibitive. They have increased the prices so dramatically and you can only get them from one of their exclusive dealers who push Sub-Zero technicians to do any repairs!

I give up. When I got married we bought a whirlpool that now sits in our garage and has never had one bit of a problem whereas each home we've lived in over the last 35 years has always had Sub-Zero and they have never been anything except money pits. Thank God we kept hauling around the garage refrigerator as it has saved us the loss of food many times. Even the home warranty companies won't cover the freezers! I guess I'll go to Consumer Reports and see what the new recommendations are for a large substitute.

When a Sub-Zero Fridge goes on the Fritz, it's takes quite a few coins to have it repaired after the 12 year warranty expiration (for us that was 2010). Problem was a slow leak in the Coil that the Repairman knew about without even seeing the fridge. In 2005, Sub-Zero corrected a design flaw in the Coil caused by welding three different types of metal (new coil is just one piece of aluminum without any welds). Too bad the refrigerator companies are not required to recall defective items while they are still under warranty (repair cost = $720.45, replacement was made in less than 1/2 hour).

We wanted a Subzero refrigerator for our remodel. We also put in a Viking Pro double wall oven. The oven vented where the dials were located and over the use of the oven, I could no longer read the dials. The oven never heated properly and a few months ago, it started on fire. Fortunately my two year old grandson yelled to me that there was fire. We decided to skip the high priced replacements. All of our friends shared the problems they have had with Dacor and Wolf. We spent our money on GE and maybe it will last as long as my grandmothers.

Our Subzero is the same kind of story...it has had problems since we bought it. The repairs are expensive...but get this. A technician said that they always charge more if you have high end appliances...it is their company policy. The freezer will not hold temps, so I am anticipating we will be putting another $1000 into repairs or finding a new, lower cost model. No more high end appliances for us.

I've been in my home 3 years and it has a sub zero 600 fridge. A plastic track in the freezer broke last year. No big deal - we went online, ordered the part for $35 dollars and replaced it ourselves. Now, another plastic track in the freezer broke but I can no longer order parts myself. We have to use an authorized service provider. The cost: $90 for the part, $70 for labor to fix it and $110 for the service charge. So net/net, my cost went from $35 to $270 in one year. The service guy told me that this was the cheapest sub-zero call he's ever made. What a racket. DON'T BUY SUB-ZERO.

I've been in contact with the company for almost THREE MONTHS back and forth with my mom's nightmare situation. My mom has a 1999 Wolf range that she believes she purchased around 2004. A few short years into owning the range she requires MAJOR repairs roughly costing her an additional $1,000 on top of the purchase price. She was told since it's a HIGH END ITEM it costs money to repair. I've been in contact with the company for approx. THREE MONTHS and we are STILL dealing with this nightmare. My mother, who's 70 years old, has been complaining everyday about not being able to use her range. I was told from a SPECIALIST that if she can't afford the maintenance that comes with these high end ranges that she should consider something different (cheaper).

WELL let's look at a cheaper company GE. I had an experience with GE about 17 years ago and was I NOT only treated as an important customer, I was treated with TOTAL CARE from beginning to end. I had an issue with a washer that started smoking due to a low drum that splashed water on the motor. NOT only did they replace the unit which was roughly $400, they upgraded me to the new style front loader profile that just came out (at that time). They gave me the one that cost twice as much in place of the one that they could have easily repaired. They stated to me that they "Valued me as a customer". WOW, a company I will forever speak HIGHLY about!!

Now back to the NIGHTMARE my mother is facing. The company in the beginning told me WOLF was out of business and there was nothing they could do to help me. Then they referred me to the company who used to repair them and now only sells parts. Back and forth for months with an issue that is still NOT resolved. After back and forth they agreed to send a service company out (which at first told me the unit was too old to repair and I needed to look for someone else). The repair person was GENUINELY concerned with my mom's situation. He told my mom to please NOT use the range because it was DANGEROUS. I was told that it was releasing carbon monoxide.

Before I continue I'd like to add that when my mom had it serviced when it was a few years old, she was told her issue with the broiler was resolved. Well, NOPE, my mom tried using the broiler and after she turned it on the force of the EXPLOSION of pressure would BLOW the door opened. She's been afraid since then and has NEVER used the broiler. By the grace of God my parents were saved from what could have been a tragedy. My dad had breathing issues for several weeks and was taking nonstop cough medicine. My daughter (2YRS old) has been hospitalized several times with breathing issues. I DON'T know if they were directly related; HOWEVER, since my daughter has not been going to my mom's she's NOT needed any treatments since. Hmm, I can only wonder if there was a connection.

The service person took the knobs from the range and told her wait for a response from the company. The person who reached out to me made an offer to replace the unit for a fee PLUS deliver, installation and taxes. That alone is roughly $1,000 PLUS THE COST of replacement bringing us way up there. So a unit that was approx. $4,000 back then plus $650 (two receipts she just found one dated 3/19/2008) plus she's currently looking for the $1,000 receipt. REALLY??? Now my question is this, ARE THESE PRODUCTS REALLY WORTH all this money? I have a regular range in my rental that is a good 10 years old and works PERFECTLY yet invest in a high end and GET RIPPED OFF?? I own a DCS that was a gift and the best gift ever.

DCS is an orange to orange product for those that don't know. I've owned mine for about 15 years and it works BEAUTIFULLY!! I didn't have to pour THOUSANDS of dollars into it. A matter of fact, when I purchased it, it came with a scratch on it and one top burner was slightly discolored so the company sent me ALL FOUR replacements so they could match. NEVER an issue with my DCS (Dynamic Cooking System). My advice to the consumers is this, do your homework and research BEFORE you invest your hard earned money. MY poor mother SHOULD NOT BE going through this heartache because she's one LITTLE customer. EVERY customer should be important.

I understand SUBZERO did not own Wolf at the time; HOWEVER, when you purchase a company and DECIDE to use the name then you do become responsible for the unit. You get the benefits from the name as well as the problems that come up. I was also told that the seal on the unit is NO GOOD and that the gases from the oven LEAK OUT. I also forgot to mention that not only did she spend THOUSANDS to repair and THOUSANDS to purchase, the CURRENT estimate for repairs is $2,500, YES TWO THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED to repair this WONDERFUL HIGH END UNIT. Now my mom is left complaining EVERYDAY to me that she needs to cook and wants to use her range.

I was told she can't because if something happens to her then they can be liable but they want all this money. So what can she do?? Let me add one more thing. She's been also cooking out of her apartment and carrying things up the stairs to sacrifice until this problem gets resolved. Last weekend she almost fell and ended up dropping her pot of food so is this any way for a senior to live? It saddens me that we are SMALL consumers and there's no care for the small people. I'm sure if this was one of their parents (company owners or employees) results and care would be different. Sad the world we live in.

Anyway, BIG SHOUT OUT TO DCS (Dynamic Cooking System), and GE. I'd also like to add that GE sells a High end range too called MONOGRAM. I would RECOMMEND these two companies ANYTIME!! Anyone have any suggestions on who else I can reach out to??? Thank you for taking the time to read about our NIGHTMARE!! Be well everyone and good luck. Contact me ANYTIME if you need to.

I just purchased my first home in Peekskill, NY. The kitchen had an old Sub-Zero refrigerator that needed service. I made several calls to the Sub-Zero/Wolf headquarters 800 toll free number and to the nearest Sub-Zero repair center in Peekskill (my Sub-Zero was built in 1987, model # 3211RFD). Both the Sub-Zero headquarters and NORTHEASTERN APPL SVC INC in Peekskill would not help me in providing a service call to my house on a weekend. I was told by the person who answered the Sub-Zero headquarters 800 number, that if I could afford a Sub-Zero, "I could afford to have someone at the house during normal business hours."

NORTHEASTERN APPL SVC INC in Peekskill told me the same thing. No weekend calls and if I had a Sub-Zero, I should be able to have someone available during normal business hours. Several phone calls to both service providers over a 3 week period, during the month of February 2014. Had no results. I called the previous owner of the house. He purchased all of the equipment in the kitchen from Aaron's in NYC. So I called Aaron's. Aaron's told me that they no longer service the Peekskill area. But gave me the phone number of a Sub-Zero repair shop in New Jersey that would help me.It was for Engineered Appliance Service in NJ.

One phone call to Engineered Appliance on a Friday afternoon and they showed up the next day on a Saturday morning. The tech who showed up fixed my Sub-Zero in an hour. AMAZING! I must add that I have worked in retail for over half of my adult life. The most important lesson I have learned in retail is that customers will never tell their friends of great customer service. But Customers will tell their friends of bad service, no matter how small or large the item was. Engineered Appliance Service has great customer service! I could never afford to buy a new Sub-Zero refrigerator to replace the one in the house.

In today's economy, with everyone trying to make ends meet, customer service can make or break a company and your reputation. The tech from Engineered Appliance Service in NJ showed up after a major snow storm. Sorry, two major snow storms! Sub-Zero is a great product. But its products is only as good as its support centers. When your local support center tells you they do not work on the weekend or after 5pm. That tells the customer who is calling for help "YOU ARE SCREWED!" and "WE DON'T CARE!"

Sub-Zero/Wolf really need to fix their service/repair dept. So does the service center in Peekskill, NY. I will always tell people of the non-service I experienced. Sub-Zero if you are reading this. I went without a refrigerator for 3 weeks. I had to wrap my food in plastic bags and leave it outside my front door. I am lucky it was Winter and had several major snow storms this month!!!! (Feb 2014). Again, I will always tell people of the non-service I experienced. I should add that I could never afford a Sub-Zero refrigerator if I had to buy one new. That I have one now and I had it fixed! I love it!!

If you buy a Sub-Zero please look at the business you are purchasing it from. How long have they been in business? Do they service the items they sell? Will they go the extra mile to service your product when you need help? A Saturday service call is a no brainer! It should be mandatory for any service department. If they don't offer weekend service go some place else.

We have a Sub-Zero 610 refrigerator built in 2002. The evaporator coil has been replaced twice because of freon leaks. The first time, parts and labor were covered (within 5 years of purchase) and this was in response to a recall. The second time was diagnosed after the unit continued to lose freon. While parts were covered, there was a $400.00 service charge. We also had to pay $95.00 for a freon top off while the problem was being diagnosed. The technician tells me that Sub-Zero had a problem with copper evaporator coils during the time frame prior to 2002 and now uses aluminum coils. The first time the coil was replaced, a copper one was supplied by Sub-Zero, which also failed. Now we have an aluminum one and only time will tell how long it will last.

We have a Sub-Zero side by side which we bought new in 2000 and it has worked for 13 years flawlessly. Love it. My mother had similar experiences for many years with Sub-Zero refrigerators, so we wanted to purchase Sub-Zero if possible. We purchased a floor model Sub-Zero freezer - at a considerable discount - a few years after the side by side. Sub-Zero informed me that the display model freezer would have a warranty shortened by a year. Right from the start, I had repeated problems with the freezer not staying cold.

Repairs were largely covered by the warranty but did not correct the problem and after numerous visits, I was about to give up and look for another freezer. Then, I decided to try K&N in Houston. This may have been 4-5 years ago. K&N sent out a Sub-Zero repairman who knew exactly what he was doing. He said that the prior repair company was doing spot-part replacements on our freezer, when actually the entire cooling system needed to be carefully (and tediously!) replaced. At that point in time, I believe only the parts were covered under the warranty.

The K&N tech spent hours that day at our house, in cramped quarters, carefully rebuilding the entire cooling system. He told me it was critical that every part of that system be replaced, because small, slow leaks are hard to identify. It worked. The repair was expensive (approx $1500) but I have a wonderful Sub-Zero freezer in a model which matches our side by side frig/freezer, thanks to K&N. Guess I am saying that I was surprised to read the negative comments about K&N, because my experience with the company was very different. I often think how fortunate I was to give them a chance because I now enjoy my Sub-Zero freezer so much.

    Reviewed Sept. 7, 2013

I installed my Sub-Zero 650 in 1999. Although I see others have had many problems, mine was trouble free for the first 10 years. Then, like others, I started to get accumulation of ice behind the vegetable (crisper) drawer. Initially, I needed to chip it away once a year, then every six months and finally once a month. I see on several forums that people have a heater installed to prevent the build up of ice and I am just astonished that some people find that an acceptable solution. Putting an electric heater INSIDE a refrigerator seems a stupid waste of energy to me.

When the refrigerator works, the air passes over the evaporator which is the large panel at the back of the fridge. The evaporator is cold, colder than the dew point of the air. So the moisture in the air in the refrigerator condenses. This moisture falls down to a small tray that is the width of the back of the refrigerator. There is a plastic pipe that then takes that water down to a tray under the refrigerator where it evaporates. The problem is that the sealant on the back of this small tray (in the shape of a shallow V) fails. Water that comes into the tray passes by the tray to the bottom of the refrigerator. The water is already very cold and it just accumulates as a lump of ice at the back of the crisper tray.

The solution is to replace the sealant on the tray. This can be accomplished simply by anyone who can use a screwdriver and a sealant gun. To do this, you need to turn the refrigerator off for at least 24 hours. This turns off the freezer, so you need to empty all the food and plan ahead. Remove the shelves and trays and remove the ice that has built up. Don't be rough with the ice as you may puncture the chassis of the refrigerator or damage the plastic pipe. Remove the screws that hold the tray in place. I think there are 10. Pull the tray away gently from the chassis then remove all of the old sealant from the tray and the chassis.

Clean and dry everything and then put a wide bead of high quality sealant on the back of the tray. Select one that is suitable for baths or for outdoor windows. Screw the tray back in place. Put more sealant around the tray so that there are no holes and form a nice smooth path for the water to once again drain down through the pipe. Now you have to leave the sealant to set. Don't turn on the refrigerator or the water will get onto the sealant and ruin the job. After 24 hours you can assemble everything, but if you can leave the refrigerator off for 48 hours that is better.

My own repair has now lasted five months without a drop of ice forming! Good luck.

I mentioned to him that this is the second time in 1 year that I have had this issue and the last time, the prior technician said there was a leak and he fixed it and added Freon, so I assumed the same situation this time, but the new technician said the issue is the condenser fan and it had to be replaced and did not even bother checking anything else. He asked for authorization to replace the fan for $477, so I did and he replaced it within an hour.

The next day, I noticed again the same situation and not cooling again, so I called the technician back and he came and now does not even bother to check to see if the Freon is leaking or needs any more and blames the prior guy and refuses to fix the issue and asked that I call the company. Every time, a service call fee was added to actual parts and labor cost. Two weeks ago, the cooling box started icing, and we called K&N. The technician told us there was a freon leak and recommended to replace the condenser coil, which he did, for $850. The job was performed by an intern while the tech sat out in the truck. An hour later, the intern left.

We were told that we were GOOD TO GO. We paid. Very quickly, the unit lost cooling power, and we had to throw away food and medicines. We called the tech back and as he entered the door - without looking at the unit - he said it would take $2850 to rebuild the unit. We called SubZero, and customer service assured us that someone would call us back from the technical dept in one day. No one ever called. K&N called us back and told us that they can now make repairs for $ 1700 in addition to what we have already paid and compressor is bad. Tried to discuss with owner/manager of K&N as technician was giving confusing advice. We got rebuked, answer was, "EITHER YOU ACCEPT THE ESTIMATE OR TECH. WILL WALK OUT."

We call another company and are told that previous job was done improperly and freon leak was at the welding point. As the coil can be welded only once, they will have to re-do the entire job plus rebuild the unit to working condition for 900 to 1000 dollars, the compressor is in good shape. Between 2 calls for K&N tech. We have to wait for about 6 hours, 2nd time he has given us the time while he had his doctor’s appointment @ the same time. Me and my wife being working people, one of us had to skip our job to wait. I hope SubZero is paying attention. In calling various companies I have used in the past in an effort to get a competitive price on repairs, I have found that Sub-Zero has, of recent, restricted my choices considerably. In essence, Sub-Zero has created a monopoly by restricting many service companies and parts suppliers to only those selected by Sub-Zero. As a consequence, Sub-Zero now substantially overcharges its customers for parts and will not allow a competitive free market regarding parts and repairs. Their prices have become exorbitant and have amounted to price fixing. The end consumer is now at the mercy of whatever Sub-Zero wishes to charge and they now allow their chosen few service companies to charge non-competitive price fixed rates, sometimes exceeding $200 to $300/hour for repairs. I bought a house with a 5 year old Sub-Zero Side by Side 601 fridge and freezer. When we turned the power on, the freezer powered up but didn't cool. It cost about $750 to get it to work. Soon after, the computer (I guess?) quit telling the heating coil to defrost, so there's ice build-up in this ($7,000?) freezer. Also (same super-expensive freezer) ever since we moved in, the icemaker has been horribly leaky and had to be shut off. As of this year (only 12 years old), the refrigerator (obviously) lost its Freon and is now turned off. There is a third Sub-Zero unit ("beer fridge") which works "OK", but also has a leaky ice maker. We're getting by with a waist-high dorm fridge, the Sub-Zero beer fridge, and a crappy old (but reliable) Norge, which is in the carport (literally "curb treasure", a free but reliable refrigerator).

We're hitting the manual defrost button on the Sub-Zero 601 freezer, but it doesn't keep up. When we have some spare dough (in a couple of months), we’re throwing the Sub-Zero stuff in the ravine (no more good money after bad!) and getting something reliable and reasonably priced. Life will be heaven. These units are "the opposite" of that. I would never buy anything made by Sub-Zero, even if I were a billionaire.

We moved into a 1923 home in July 2010, which kitchen had been remodeled in the late 1990s with a Sub-Zero 550 fridge. It looked really nice. In the less than 2 years we've lived in the home, we've had more refrigerator problems than I would like to admit. I knew Sub-Zero had a reputation for being problem-prone, but I didn't really believe it. Now I do. Shortly after we moved in, the fridge just didn't work. I woke up one morning, and all the food was warm. Great. I called the local Sub-Zero repair company, and he said the compressor had been overworked, because it hadn't been cleaned/vacuumed in what looked like years. There was an inch of black soot/dust on the coils. Fortunately, once it was cleaned, the fridge worked again. I didn't have to replace anything.

A few months later, we noticed the door wasn't closing fully and was loose on the hinges. I called repair again, and he replaced them with cheap plastic but official Sub-Zero parts. Most recently (May 2012), I noticed huge iceberg on the bottom shelf behind the vegetable drawers. I had to chip it away with a hammer and screwdriver. At the same time, I noticed the door seal wasn't really working well and prevented the door from closing all the way, making the food inside warmer than it should be. So I called repair again and showed him the door, and told him about the ice build-up issue. He tested the door and didn't see a seal issue since. Murphy's Law. It seemed to be closing properly. But he addressed the ice issue and said we needed a floor defroster unit to prevent the ice build-up. Oh, and while he was checking the rest of the electrical, he said we had a refrigerant leak, which was preventing the fridge from staying cold. Estimate to replace and repair is $1427. I can get a really nice Samsung for $3000, so we are getting a new fridge.

No matter what the size of the glass, cup, container, etc., any ice that comes out of the dispenser comes out so hard and fast that it bounces out of the container and onto the floor. There is no option for crushed ice (we regret not checking into that) and the constant puddle of water on the floor where ice cubes have melted after they shot out later in the day without anyone around is really annoying. It is a joke to have paid $11K for a refrigerator that operates with the finesse of a jackhammer. Horrible. We never let guests fill their glasses because inevitably, ice goes everywhere.

We purchased the 550 when we remodeled our kitchen in 1997, even though it was an expensive extravagant item. We thought we would get what we paid for. However, it has been nothing but repair bills ever since. I have been through too many sets of door cams to count. They used to be $3.50 a pair and now cost us $30 a pair. But the door won't work properly unless you replace them. I complained directly to Sub Zero and they nicely sent one set of cams only and referred me to a local repairperson for further parts. We've replaced door gaskets and ice maker, and added a heater for the frozen water line. Now we are facing the water leaking from the freezer problem that many others have also reported and the high humidity in the frig section causing mold. Too much for such an expensive item! And Sub Zero is in total denial. Spread the word and impact their current sales. Maybe we can save others if not ourselves.

We built our dream home in 2005, complete with a fabulously designed kitchen with Wolf-Sub-Zero appliances and a wine cellar. In the kitchen, we have an under the counter WSZ wine cooler.

There are many things wrong with those other Wolf-Sub-Zero appliances from the poor functioning of the 5 burner stove to the cracking of the porcelain on the double ovens. Wolf is aware of the design flaws but, has blown us off and wants us to spend thousands for replacements. Our latest appliance failure is with our built-in Sub-Zero 424HAG/S-LH wine cooler that appears to have a leak in the freon unit since it no longer cools and flashes: Service. Not only that, but the unit has ruined the wood floor underneath. They took it to the shop yesterday and claimed it would probably not cost more than $500 to repair. We have already paid $118 for a previous service call. Our heads are spinning!

According to what we have read in Consumer Reports, Wolf-Sub-Zero does not have a good repair record. These appliances are supposed to be “top of the line” and are extraordinarily expensive. We have had many appliances throughout our lives and quite frankly, never owned any that performed so poorly. We never had such an expensive refrigerator go bad either.

It appears that everything is made with planned obsolescence in mind. The company does not seem to stand behind its products. We are very unhappy, believe that we have wasted our money and could never, ever recommend Wolf-Sub-Zero to anyone in good conscience. Our years old Miele and Asko products all work beautifully. Do not waste your money on Wolf-Sub-Zero! Look for other manufacturers—would be our advice.

I purchased a Sub Zero, model 550, refrigerator in 1996. The unit has never been problem-free. The factory-authorized repair company has been out to my home many times from the beginning and has replaced the heater and fan and nothing seems to work. They told me last year that they devised a new piece to put in the bottom of the unit that may help the problem. It is not guaranteed and costs $500.

It would seem that there should have been a product recall on a product that has so many design problems. I finally spoke to an honest person that told me the problem stemmed from Sub Zero attempting to meet the Energy Efficiency standards by reducing the heat needed to keep water from freezing as it moved down the drain. I have huge blocks of ice forming on the bottom on the frig and I stopped attempting to defrost the drain as it does not defrost. Mold forms inside from the constant moisture, which is unsafe. How can a unit need a fabricated part to work that was not part of the original design?

This problem was known at the time I purchased the unit. I was not informed by the authorized repair company as I am sure they wanted the servicing business from Sub Zero and were probably prevented from disclosing the truth to the customer.

This situation definitely qualifies for a class action suit. Information was kept from customers about a defective product. Sub Zero had the names of all purchasers who sent in warranty cards and called for repairs due to these defects and was never compelled to replace or cover a real fix for this unit.

In the first year we lived here, we had the repairman fix it, 12 times in six months. We had to shut down the refrigerator and use a stand alone refrigerator in our garage. The temperature will sometimes go up over 40 degrees and they don't know what to do about it. I've called Sub Zero but got no satisfaction. The refrigerator is approximately 14 years and is now out of warranty and it is so disheartening because a new one is way out of our price range and we have no other options as the space is too small to fit an off the rack refrigerator. There are no other options except to purchase a new one, but we wouldn't because we don't have that kind of money to waste and the product is awful. I would never recommend anyone to purchase one.

We have a home warranty plan and the service people they contract are let's say, not the best. However, this giant hunk of worthless metal has had so many issues, from a mold problem which took two years to monthly bleaching (yes I had to empty the entire fridge and wipe it down with Clorox water until Sub-Zero admitted there was a problem and a "dryer" was installed). The most recent, which made me miss 8 days of work in the past month and loss of approximately $1000 worth of food I had to discard, was a terrible humming noise. They replaced the fan, the thermostat and the seals but it still will only get down to 45 on the top fridge and my veggies are freezing solid in the crisper drawers.

I caution anyone even thinking of investing a penny in one of these albatrosses to look at something more reliable and less expensive to maintain. I had the refrigerator door open fully and then opened the bottom drawer to get something and the whole refrigerator fell forward. I had stepped away for a moment to put something in the sink when the whole refrigerator fell forward. The weight of the door and the bottom drawer must have been too heavy to keep the refrigerator balanced.

When I called the person who installed it, he said that the balancing legs had dropped about an inch in the back causing the refrigerator to become unbalanced. It had been installed properly with a cleat fitting neatly under the back end of the refrigerator. Sub zero should be very specific about installation instructions. It is not enough to just slide the refrigerator in and have it held in place by slipping it under a 2x4 wood cleat.

Someone could have been killed if standing in front of it. The fact that the door was wide open and stopped the refrigerator from falling completely over. The corner of the door was wedged into the floor and held the refrigerator from falling and crashing to the floor. Before someone does get killed your instructions should have warning signs regarding the danger of improper installation. Fortunately, no one was injured by a stoke of luck having moved away from the refrigerator a second before it came out of the wall space.

The upside is that Sub_Zero is the "only" manufacturer that has two compressors, one for the freezer, one for the refrigerator. Apparently, that's a plus because if one dies, the other will still be working. we've no plans to replace the Sub-Zero brand, but we'd like if Sub-Zero had the integrity to use thermostats were not designed to fail every year or two.
