My 3 year old over-the-range Samsung microwave displayed an -SE- error while beeping several weeks ago. I unplugged/replugged the oven and all was well. It started doing it again today but would not go away this time after I unplugged/replugged. I cleaned the sensor at the top inside center of the oven with a Q-Tip and 91% Isopropyl alcohol and it is working again. Don't know if it's a semi-permanent fix or not since it just happened today. I've enjoyed using this oven and have had no other issues.

The 5E code appeared today and pulling the plug gave me several hours of use but then nothing. Called Samsung with my problem. They were knowledgeable, aware of the problem and quickly set me up for a service call and parts, no charge. I will wait the 2 days promised for the service center to call but so far all is good. They told me that this started with the 2009 model which has been recalled and cost will be paid through an epidemic warranty.

Have owned model SMH9187ST for 2.5 years and experiencing the second failure! The first problem was a failed thermal sensor ($158, including labor) and I am now getting an SE error. Microwave hadn't been used in several days and bam, there is an error. Thanks to the reviews on this site and all of the complaints Samsung has fielded, they have agreed to cover the cost of the parts and labor, provided that the problem is with the control panel.

Was kind of a hassle getting the service scheduled, but it appears things are on track. I sure hope the replacement part solves the original design flaw or I will not be purchasing another Samsung product.

Microwave is just over two years old. The first one I purchased caught fire the first time turned it on. I returned it and exchanged it for the same model. Now I get what I find out is a common error. I had a Sharp for almost 10 years and it was still working when I installed the Samsung after a remodel. I am very disappointed in the quality of this brand.

2005 Samsung microwave -SE- on display. Microwave high end that has an auto cook for types of food. I saw the post about the sensor and read others online for only 10 min. Said it was a humidity sensor that was shorted inside microwave, not a panel. My microwave was totally unusable. No buttons worked and unplugging power had no effect. I am fairly good at fixing things. And it said that you had to replace sensor. But after about five min., I remembered what I last cooked. I cooked corn. I bet that sensor is dirty. Inside on the ceiling of the microwave is a small 1/4 inch hole that the sensor fits. I sprayed it with aerosol isopropyl alcohol. Instant! : 0 on display, the -SE- was gone. The sensor was dirty and caused the microwave to lockup. I did not use but can suggest maybe a Q-tip with rubbing alcohol. A spray worked for me. My microwave is working. Thanks for the info on this site. It helped. Lot of work saved.

Samsung over stove microwave Model # SMH9187W - I noticed yesterday that the control panel was showing SE on the panel. I checked online to troubleshoot this issue and came across this website. I then called Samsung customer service line and only got a # to call service company. I was told Samsung would only pay for panel but not labor of 170.00. SO I did the online chat with an agent and cut and paste many reviews that were shown here. Then I got another phone number and again explained and was then transferred to service and surprise, service person will come and replace my panel 100% FREE OF CHARGE. I was very calm and polite and explained issues are confirmed by at least 200 other owners of this product. I am please with outcome and happy that Samsung realized that customer service is important.

After 3 years of very light use, around June 2013, my Samsung microwave stopped suddenly giving a different beep. All buttons of the keypad were inoperable. Nothing of this mentioned in the user manual. I called service engineer & he too had no idea about the error code. He asked us to replace the keypad unit but did not return after that. I just chanced to look for the solution of the problem in net & to my disbelief exactly the same problem is faced by so many all around the world and the Samsung guys have found a way to earn more bucks on pretext of repairing their own manufacturing defect. Shame on them.

5E code came up. I watched several videos and read several instructions for accessing the control panel on 9207 Samsung microwaves, but the instructions are for control panels located on the main chassis, not on the bottom of the door where it is on an actual 9207. There seems no way of getting into the door to the control panel without cracking the seal on the glass or damaging the stainless steel guard that runs along the bottom front of the door. Any thoughts, any theories? I hope that the pictures help some. In #4 you can see that there were two silver tabs on the leading edge of the door for the front bottom steel strip to hook onto, but pulling those tabs didn't release the strip to gain access to the control panel.

The control panel went bad, and the unit (two years old, gently used) flashed an error message. It's a common display, from what I learned online. Samsung makes a microwave with oven lights and fan to fit over an oven but can't tolerate the heat and vapor that rises from the stove. Many, many of such units have suffered control panel failure. I called Samsung and outlined the problem. That was almost two weeks ago. The Samsung representative said I would receive a call within two days with information about who would repair the unit at no cost to me. The company would extend the warranty for this repair because of design flaws. Then, she said, I would receive a call within no more than two additional days from the repair company to set a date and time for the replacement.

I've received no calls from anybody about this problem. I'm trying now to retrace my earlier call, and it's frustrating. I want my microwave repaired, and Samsung is not cooperating after promising my satisfaction.

Boy, was I excited. Spoke to several reps... They advised me Samsung has had this issue and would replace the control box "FREE OF CHARGE".... I was shocked... So I asked several more times if the technician would come to my house and replace it FREE OF CHARGE?.... Yes, but if it didn't work and they had to diagnose it, I would have to pay at that point. I said, "well let's replace it and if it doesn't work, I will just buy a new one." Set up a ticket number.

The next day the repair company called to set up an appointment. Well..... Samsung fine print.... They will not let the repair company order the FREE replacement control panel until the problem is diagnosed. So, bottom line in order to get FREE repair and FREE part, I have to pay $110.00... Never will I buy a Samsung...

Per Samsung, some microwaves out of warranty had to be repaired as they displayed an SE error. Samsung sent someone to fix the microwave, which worked for about two weeks before again had the same problem. As there was a death in the family and I did not call back within 30 days of the first visit, they said they will send a technician to replace the bad part they put in but I would have to pay the labor but not for the part. Instead will trash the microwave.

Just glad this happened before I bought the new Samsung refrigerator, dishwasher, washer, and dryer I had picked out for delivery later this month. Will not buy any Samsung product again as they forgot what customer service means. And when I asked to speak to a supervisor, the man simply kept putting me on hold for more than 30 minutes but would return every 4 minutes to say the supervisor would be on the phone shortly. I consider it a waste of time to deal with Samsung consumer department and a waste of money to buy their products.

Purchased a Samsung over the stove microwave in July 2011. Did not get the extended warranty. After about 8 months the door was broken. We called and Samsung had it fixed with no charge to us as it was under warranty. Two weeks ago, the microwave beeped and showed an SE code. Nothing works. It is completely dead. I have spent MANY hours trying to get this problem resolved. I have searched online and it seems as many others have had this same problem. I finally was able to contact someone at Samsung who told me they knew about the problem and they were fixing them even though they were out of warranty. I was given a reference number and told to call another number.

When I called that number, I was told it would not be fixed for free as it was not my model number that they were having the problem with. After thinking about it for a few days and reading more online, I found that there are lots of people with this problem and it involves several different model numbers, including mine. I called Samsung again and was on the phone over an hour trying to get them to fix this for me. They kept telling me since I didn't buy the extended warranty they would not help me. Now I understand about the warranty. I never buy the extended warranty because I expect a product to be made well and last a reasonable amount of time. I understand that sometimes things happen, but I feel that when it is a problem so many people are having and there are different model numbers involved they should have a recall on them and fix them!!

The outcome of my last call with Samsung is they would pay for the part which is $35.00 and we pay the service call, $85.00 or more. Sorry this is still not acceptable to me. If you make an over the stove microwave then I guess it should be made to USE over the stove without breaking within 2 years. We paid $399.00 for this microwave which isn't cheap and should last longer! PLEASE let me know if you can help or where else I can turn. I really don't have the money to replace this microwave and don't feel I am being unreasonable thinking they should make good on their product. Thank you in advance for your help.

About 3 years ago, our 15 year old GE over the stove microwave was working but seemed slow and dated. We replaced it with a Samsung SMH9187ST that had gotten good reviews. About 6 months into its use, there was a shorting sound and smoke when I pressed the start button. A new control board, fuses, and a couple other parts were replaced under warranty. And since then, we haven't had any problems - until two days ago when the keypad stopped functioning.

We tried unplugging and plugging in again, but that only worked once and only for about 5 minutes. Then the "SE" error message came up. I filled out the online service form on Samsung's site and have been sent information about a service company in Florida (I live in Ohio) and instructions on how to send the item back. Really? It looks like about 15 people have posted this same SE problem in the last month, almost everyone out of warranty. So perhaps this is planned obsolescence combined with bad service. Our Samsung microwave is a handsome piece of equipment and when it works, it works well. I wish I had done better research before buying it along with its suite of companion SS appliances. We, too, got the dreaded error code shortly after the warranty expired. Once the 5E error code appeared, nothing we did, unplugging and plugging, or buttons we pushed could get it working again. Luckily, my engineer husband managed to fix the problem since the company is rather less than customer-friendly when dealing with this apparently well-known problem.

The fix requires one to remove the inside control panel and wipe off the contacts, which apparently are affected by steam rising from cooking on the range underneath. We have had to do this several times in a row (like twice in one day, then the following week type of thing), but since cleaning the contacts about four months ago, it has not happened again. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but I am extremely disappointed with Samsung's customer service in dealing with this issue. Also, it was my first time buying SS appliances - and it will certainly be the last. I don't know if it's just this brand, but I find the finish is way too delicate for our bustling kitchen.

If no luck, I'll take it to Lowe's, put it in a shopping cart with an "ANOTHER SAMSUNG LEMON" sign on it, and spend a couple of hours on a busy day in the appliance department looking at other products.

I might also get into a somewhat spirited discussion with a salesperson, or bring along my wife to play the role of just another shopper asking questions about Samsung quality. My personal experience is that Samsung quality sucks, and customer service is the worst. It will be a cold day in hell before I ever consider another Samsung product, let alone actually buy one. We bought a Samsung suite of appliances: stove, microwave, refrigerator, and dishwasher. Within the first week or so, there was a burn mark on the door frame on the microwave. We tried to clean it, but it was definitely a burn mark. After a day or so, we noticed the mark getting larger, so we called Lowe's, who directed us to Samsung. Samsung took about two weeks, and after many emails and photos sent in to them, they finally sent out a repair tech to look at the issue. The tech also took photos, and stated that the door frame was out of alignment and not flush, and that he could only see this mark growing. He advised not to use the microwave due to stray waves escaping, which were causing the burning on the door frame.

We then had to contact customer service repeatedly to obtain a replacement product. Many more calls to coordinate with Lowe's, and finally, we went to pick up our unit and found out that what Samsung told us and what Lowe's wanted were two different things. Samsung did not send in the right paperwork, so Lowe's would not release the replacement unit to us even though we had uninstalled the first one and brought it with us to the Lowe's store. Back into the car it went, and more calls and emails.

During this series of emails, the Samsung customer service person offered to pay us up to $150 for installation and re-installation of the unit. We followed her directions, and we went to pick up the replacement unit again from Lowe's. This time, the exchange went fine. We mailed in the invoices for the uninstall and the re-install, as per instructions. Then the waiting and the follow-up emails started. No reply from any of them. We sent in regular emails over a long period of time. I like the Samsung refrigerator. They can keep the dishwasher, and the stove is just okay. The microwave seems fine now. He sent out a new microwave and prior to installing it, I noticed that there were also visible white paint repairs but not as many as the first one. We agreed to accept the replacement. Post installation, my husband and I did extensive traveling. Given the time we were gone, I would say the microwave was used approximately 1 year.

Yesterday, the microwave quit working. Approximately 2 hours later, I checked it again only to notice that it was very, very warm. I unplugged it and then plugged it in again. The lights went back on the panel but it was very noisy. Within 15 seconds, all lights went off again and it did not work again. I opened the door and realized that the glass plate was very hot. We thankfully took an extended warranty on all our new kitchen appliances but I can honestly say that after reading all the negative reviews on this model, I do not feel safe with it. My Samsung SMH9187ST microwave stopped working in less than three years. Now out of warranty, Samsung was of NO help. It is not worth repairing given a minimum $150 labor fee for a unit that cost just over $200. I regret having purchased a Samsung refrigerator/freezer. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that one. Bottom line, avoid Samsung microwaves like the plague.

I purchased a Samsung Microwave Model SMH8187STG from Costco on 19 MAR, 2011. The other day, I went to close the door, heard a snap and it wouldn't close. The plastic latch was loose. I called Samsung (even though warranty was over) to inquire about what to do, and was passed on to their Canadian parts department, where I ordered a new plastic latch piece for $2.99, assuming that's what the problem was. It would be sent to the dealer nearest to our town where I could pick it up at that price, or mailed to me for $12.99 (I chose the pick up). The parts person also helped by directing me to a website as to how to take the door apart to get at the broken latch. I discovered many other sites where people had had problems with Samsung door latches failing, SE problems, etc.

Anyway, when I took the door apart and got the latch out, there were a couple of other broken plastic pieces also. I picked up the new piece yesterday, brought it home, and discovered from looking at some other websites that some people had to glue broken plastic bits back on the door in order to get everything to work (they apparently hadn't ordered a new part). My new part didn't include the other plastic pieces, as they had been part of the inside of the door! They were very small, and very thin, and were part of the guides for the latch, and one of them appeared to be the piece that would anchor the spring that would attach to the latch. Crazy glue or epoxy wasn't going to fix that piece well enough to allow a spring to re-anchor for the stress on the latch. My wife and I do not slam the microwave door, and at our age (mid-60's), we realize we're now living in a throw-away society, but this is ridiculous!

It looks like we'll need a new door, as the whole internal part of the current door contains these tiny plastic anchors. Samsung knew or ought to have known that these pieces would not stand up to repeated use over more than a few years before the stress on them would cause them to fail. Why would they not have used reasonably strong metal anchors? While I'm not a lawyer, one would think that those of us that have had this problem would have a decent case in small claims court or in a class action suit, even though the warranty is over. Does anyone agree? Anyway, after reading the other horror stories and our experience, it's the first/last Samsung for us! P.S. So far, we haven't had the SE problem, but from the looks of it, we probably will. However, we bought ours at Costco, as mentioned, and they are very good at taking things back from dissatisfied customers.

They also are saying I bought the microwave in 2010, but that isn't true. The executive slipped up and told me that they actually go by date of manufacture and add two months to it. Next they just keep saying that they are not going to fix this problem even though you can go look anywhere online and see that they are having problems with all the keypads on their microwaves. Next, the tech support people really don't want to transfer you to anyone higher than them. They are smart ** over that. They are not going to do anything for you. We installed a Samsung SMH9187 over cook top microwave in August 2009. I liked the 5 speed fan. The low speed was quieter than others at low speed. Controls stopped working August 2012 so I replaced membrane touch pad - a 3 year life. Now May 2013 (0.75 years later) and no response from touch pad. I just solved the problem. The problem of lack of response to control pad (a membrane switch) was to separate two sections of the control pad cable. The membrane switch type control panel was a film cable that connects to the circuit board. A 7-wire piece folds back on the cable, causing confusion for the control system on the PC board. The solution was to insert a small rolled up paper tube to separate the two cable sections.

To test this I removed the paper tube and clipped the cable pieces tightly together. The controls became unresponsive. Separating the cable sections again restored function. This is a quirk in the Samsung design. It may have been unnecessary to replace the first membrane switch ($19). When the new switch was installed, by chance the two cable pieces were separated just enough to work. Then over time they moved together, initially causing some problems, then later total non-function. This problem may cause one to push hard on the buttons to make it work, possibly damaging the switch.

Step by Step Instructions: 1. Unplug microwave for safety; 2. Remove 2 vent cover retaining screws from top front of microwave; 3. Push vent cover left to unhook and remove; 4. Remove screw on top of control panel box; 5. Push control panel box up to unhook and remove. No need to disconnect anything; 6. Insert a rolled up tube of paper 2" to 3" between folded back 7-connector piece and the main cable; 7. Re-install control box and test. Then re-install vent cover.

I'm amazed at all these problems people are having. One would think Samsung would help, but it seems they hide behind "warranty is up" so call a repairperson. Our last phone purchase was Nokia, not a Samsung, as I have lost faith in the brand.

As the previous 150 purchasers of the OTC Samsung SMH9187SW Microwave, I purchased mine 12/2011, and it has stopped working 2/2013. Since it is out of warranty, I didn't even bother to contact Samsung because I've had mine for 26 months and knew that if I wanted a Samsung certified repair person, it would cost more than the original price. I live in the San Francisco Bay area so I found a repairman with 135 5 STAR reviews. I told him my problem and he said he stopped working on microwaves because it was cheaper for customers to replace them. He also said he did not know of anyone that he could honestly recommend. So I found this site and followed the advice of the few people that were able to get theirs up and running. Unfortunately, none of the suggestions helped; I tried unplugging the unit, pushing clear and start simultaneously and finally unplugging and resetting the blue and white plugs on the control panel.

I had thought of buying a different microwave except for the fact there is not one single microwave under $1,000 with a customer rating above 2 stars. Even the Best Buy rated microwaves in Consumer Reports, Epinions, Amazon, etc. didn't receive positive reviews from the actual consumers. So now I am going to order the control panel (not from Samsung directly) and install it myself. I don't see any other option since I don't want the expense of another microwave plus installation and then worry that another problem will occur no matter what brand I buy. My 1st OTC microwave lasted 20 years, the 2nd for 10 years and now 2 years! I most definitely would like to be involved in a class action suit. One interesting side note: Consumer Reports still list Samsung in the top 4. From now on, I'm going to the actual user reviews listed at the bottom of the rating page!

I looked for the part, which cost $76, but did not purchase. I re-assembled the microwave and it worked again, obviously taking it apart and putting it back together to reset the unit. I have now removed the control box about 10 times. One night, it again went into code SE which makes the unit beep incessantly. My wife had to get up to fiddle with the panel and eventually unplug the unit to make it stop beeping. She was mad. The following night she made me unplug the microwave before going to bed to insure that she was not going to be woken up.

Eighteen months later, the motor gearing that turns the turntable's spindle got loose. I glued it back on. Today it showed a different code: child lock on, child lock off. I looked in the manual for the unlock code. Press and hold the start button for 3 seconds. Dumb! This is the most used button and the first one to fail. I removed the control panel again and attempted to remove the membrane switches. They are glued into the panel and are not replaceable or available from the parts department. I have to purchase the whole faceplate for the above mentioned cost of $76. Of course, I have no assurances that the defective part has been redesigned, so I am not going to spend additional money purchasing a new defective panel.

What else is going to break in this horrible microwave? The variety of the failures confirmed my suspicions of horrible design and built, probably rushed to the market to make more money. The saddest part of all this is that I replaced my 18-year old microwave simply because the front plastic case parts had broken or become to worn out to look clean. I also own a Samsung top load washer and dryer that cost about $1800-$2000. So when these crap out, I will load them all in my truck and drop them through their nearest Samsung plate glass windows. I completely re-did a kitchen in our little weekend house and outfitted it with a Samsung SMH9187ST microwave. Since it is a weekend house, the microwave doesn't actually get much use. The microwave was new in 2010 and is now a little less than 2 years old. I got the dreaded SE error code back in the early spring of 2011. It worked for a few weeks during the summer, but I've had to keep it unplugged (due to the error beeping) since September. I'll try a replacement board that I'll install, but I'm very disappointed with this product. Probably, it will be my last Samsung appliance. My $59 microwave from Target has worked great for years.

I tried resetting it by plugging and unplugging, holding down buttons, unplugging and plugging back in keypad. Nothing worked. I still got the SE code. Finally, I cleaned the ribbon connector with rubbing alcohol. This fixed it for about 5 minutes, then it started doing it again. I guess I need to either replace the keypad or the whole microwave. It's an SMH9187W, manufactured in Sept 2010. It was in use for 14 months, 2-3 times a week of light duty (warming up leftovers). Very disappointing that a seemingly nice, high-end product would fail so quickly. I have owned many microwaves and have never ever had a microwave fail - even old free ones that were given to me.

The problem with replacing the keypad is that you will be lucky to get a year and a half out of it, as we know from experience. Perhaps I could trade it for a different brand at a used appliance store. I think any other brand would be better because out of the probably 10 different microwaves I've used and owned over the years, I've never ever seen one fail.

This might be the 100th written complaint about Samsung microwave's premature failure. Samsung model #SMH9187ST over the range unit produced the SE code. I did the recommended troubleshooting to no avail. I called Samsung customer service 3 times to let them do "the right thing" and at least help me out since the unit was over one year old but less than two. I am a capable do-it-yourselfer and did not want to spend $150 plus for the repair, when I could do it for half the amount. After reading the previous complaints, I knew what part to order (the control panel assembly) and I knew I could install it. I bought the microwave from Lowe's, but I bought the repair part from Sear Parts Direct for $71.02 total including shipping and tax. I received the part and installed it, and the microwave works perfectly.

Why couldn't Samsung help me? I shall again call Samsung customer service and reference this column to see if they'll adjust me for the part. I'll follow up with the result to you, folks.

I called Samsung and they had me diagnose a few things with no luck. Of course, I understand the 1-year warranty, but 2 years of service, and the repair costs are the same as a new unit? It's unacceptable. I spoke to 3 Samsung reps, including a manager, and all 3 agreed that it is unfair for this product to stop working after 2 years, yet they all 3 also said there was nothing they could do. Lowe's did step up and try to "fight" for me, but was also unsuccessful. The part that made it worse was that Lowe's told me Samsung is willing to make a concession to help, but only if the unit is 2 years or less. Well, guess what? After approximately 2 years, I got an SE code on the LED read out and the unit stopped working. Nothing worked on the unit including the light; all buttons were dead. After contacting Samsung @ 1-800-726-7864 they informed me that there had been some problems with the "Control Pad" and that they would replace the control pad at no charge. Sounds good? What’s the problem?

After four days, I was informed by Samsung that they have no authorized Samsung techs in my area and they couldn't send the replacement part to anyone other than a Samsung authorized tech (catch 22). Samsung has offered a pro-rated refund. This is not good! I have new custom-made cabinets, external venting and a tile splash up underneath the microwave. Ditto on the SE code problem. I caught the bug today. I called the Samsung number (1800-726-7864). I told the guy about the problem and that I reviewed this website which had about 90 similar complaints, that I want Samsung to set up a repair for me at their expense. He didn't argue at all - was very nice and professional. He mentioned that they will set up a repair as part of an "epidemic recall program" on the unit. I had to accept the stipulation that if it was not the keypad/control pad, that I'd either not get it fixed or have to cover it myself. Given this site suggests that is the problem, I said okay. He reassured me that 9 out of 10 times that is turning out to be the problem, which suggests they've accumulated a nice history of this problem. You'll need to give them the serial number from inside the door on the wall, but that's about it.

The only downside is that the next available appointment from their authorized service company is a week away. I got their number and will call them tomorrow to see if I can get any help sooner. But assuming this fixes it at their expense, I will be satisfied which is two stars lower than happy. But at least it appears that Samsung is now finally standing behind their defective product.

But thanks to kind folks in this forum, I went to repairclinic.com and purchased the replacement model item #2024600 and part #DE94-01999C for $70. I got it in a week and took all of 5 minutes to replace. I will restate the procedure:

    1. Unscrew the 2 top vent screws and slide to the left.
    2. Take out the top control module screw and gently remove, watching out for the tabs on the bottom.
    3. There are 6 wiring connections that pull away very easily. Mark them if you need to.

    4. Put everything back and you're done. Working great! So far.

Just like everybody here, I got this error for my Samsung microwave (model SMH9187W), which is just a bit over two years old. I arranged for service myself by a Samsung authorized service company. The repair cost $205.90. The company diagnosed the microwave as needing a new keypad. While waiting for the company to come back with the part and install it, I contacted Samsung about getting reimbursed for the problem. To my surprise, they did have a program in place to reimburse people, but only if you arranged for service through them and only if it was the control panel. If it turned out to be the keypad, they wouldn't pay. My service person came back, installed the keypad (which he said was the recommended fix in Samsung's own manual for repairmen) and my microwave now works.

I contacted Samsung again because the invoice from the repair company says they actually replaced the electronic control board. I think the repair person is maybe using the terms interchangeably. At any rate, Samsung's new excuse for not paying me now has nothing to do with how my microwave was repaired, but because they have no way to reimburse me; despite the fact that I have a detailed invoice, that the repair fixed the problem and that it was performed by an authorized Samsung repair company. I just wrote a letter to the CEO and told him I would never, ever buy another Samsung product.

When I asked how we would know which it was, they said you won't until the repair people came out. Calling repair, they said it would be a minimum of $70 visit fee and $90 for the part. So that would be at least $160. Repair also said it is not the display, that the SE code means more than that. I'm very disappointed with Samsung and am now looking for a new microwave. Our SE code problem with our Samsung microwave SMH9187ST started about 1.5 years after installation. We tried unplugging and plugging back in, but we could not get rid of the code. We tried going through Samsung customer service but due to it being outside of the 1 year warranty period, they offered neither assistance nor technical recommendations, even after escalating to their executive offices. They did offer to have someone look at it for $250, which is about $75 less than the cost of a new one and this is before fixing it. Thanks but no thanks also to Consumer Reports who rated this the best microwave when we were buying.

Fortunately, we found the website www.consumeraffairs.com with postings from many other people with the same problem. We changed the display/control panel as T from Needham, MA post recommended. It has been about a week and it has worked fine since. The cost was about $70 and we didn't have to install a new microwave. The website repairclinic.com had the part and pictures of what it looks like. Sears appliance part online store also sells the part. You have to make sure to find the right one for the finish you have. Ours is stainless steel, so the part number is DE94-01999C.

The repair was pretty easy, first and most importantly - unplug the microwave. Then remove the 2 screws holding the top, then slide it to the left and pull towards you. Then there is only 1 screw to remove the display. Be careful with the bottom tabs of the display because they break easily. The trickiest part is making sure you remember which wires go to which slots. Most of the connections have tabs, so be sure to squeeze the tabs, then wiggle the connection gently to disconnect it. Take a picture in case you forgot the connection locations. Remember the order of the wires and install them on the new one, replace the screws and the top, then plug back in and if you're fortunate like me in this case, it should be ready to go. Good luck!

My Samsung isn't even 2 years old; but of course, no longer under warranty and it stopped working. I get weird symbols appearing on the panel, then SE, then a row of 6's and beeping. My husband tried to do what other people having this problem have reported doing on the internet. Unplugged it for a day, tried resetting the key pad. The bottom line is the keypad is flawed and even if he can coax the microwave to work for a short time, it ultimately quits working again.

My husband went online to purchase a replacement keypad from Sears. Sears discontinued the part. I guess they don't want to be mixed up in this mess. I don't blame them. I called Samsung and good luck. They could care less about making good on a clearly flawed design/part. They told me they could arrange a repairman to come to fix it at my expense. I am not throwing away more of my money trying to fix this piece of junk. Samsung obviously won't stand behind their products.

Time to buy another microwave; it took a lightning strike to kill my first GE microwave of 20+ years. I am headed back to the GE showroom. This was the first Samsung product I have ever bought and it will be the last. I really hope that they recorded my conversation with their representative on the phone today. Maybe when the company goes bankrupt, they will figure out in retrospect why! They deserve to go bankrupt.

P.S. I saw another disgruntled customer has posted a video on YouTube about his microwave's bizarre behavior. He has the same model as mine and his microwave is doing the same thing that mine is doing. Watch the video and weep. Fight with your wallet and don't buy Samsung products!

My husband is attempting to go a little further and take off the control panel. We'll see what happens. I got the SE code on the Samsung microwave and after reading the complaints here, I called Sears where we got it and had a tech come out. We were able to keep using it until then by holding the stop/clear and start/enter button. Then I got to the point where I'd take off the panel and move the wires and it would work again. Also, using the timer/clock seemed to be the issue. Anyhow, Sears came out for $75 to tell me what I already knew (needed new key pad/control box) and it would be a total of $200 for them to repair it (it's only a $200 microwave). But he did tell me how to replace it. I tried to get the part from Samsung and they wouldn't as it was just out of warranty (so don't waste your time trying). JJ Parts in NJ is the part dealer for Samsung.

I called and got the part with shipping for $70. Installation was super easy: two screws on the top of the unit on the vent grill and then slide it out. Then there is one screw at the top of the control panel. Open the door and lift the control panel up and it comes right off. Then there are a few ribbon cables to take off and it is clearly marked when you need to install them on the new keypad. Someone noted never work on a microwave due to it holding onto a charge - yes, that is true, but you'd have to go way into the machine. Unplug the unit obviously before doing this repair, but I can't see how you'd possibly run into any issues with this super easy repair.

Some people suggested taking off the touch board, replugging everything and putting it back. For some it worked. We simply plugged and unplugged the wires inside, replaced. Wow. Look at all these reviews. Same **, different user. I have the same microwave that everyone is complaining about here. This microwave has always been noisy (really noisy) and the keypad hard to use. We bought it to replace a Kenmore microwave that was over 20 years old (like our fridge), but still working. Now, we are getting the common SE problem; no amount of beating, unplugging, cursing, or other trickery will coax it into working. I went with this one because it looked great with our Frigidaire cooktop and oven, and I did not care for the styling of the Frigidaire micro. What a crock! Appliances should last. The oven that gave up and had to be replaced was a Magic Chef from 1966.

Show me an appliance from a contemporary manufacturer that lasts over 50 years these days. Not gonna happen. I did expect to get more than 2 years out of a $300 microwave, however. I lust the Samsung fridges, but I will have to get over it and see if Kenmore can provide one with the same features when I need that, because I will not be getting a Samsung. I have a phone (4 years old) that will need replacing soon, and the iPhone is looking pretty good. Now, I’m glad we went with another manufacturer for the recently purchased TV, judging from the tales of "customer service" listed on the site. We will try the panel repair tonight, but I am sure the Magnetron will bite it soon, according to the others. So it will be a matter of time before I have to purchase another microwave, not a Samsung this time, no matter how sexy it is.

Of course, I called the company and they state, "Too bad, it is out of warranty (12 months)." The company needs to look at the business they are losing over what could be a small fix. I will no longer purchase any Samsung products. I was a dedicated Samsung customer because the quality was there in the past. In this economy, you would think that a company would value the customers they have and when they see a defect like this, they should address it, not just brush it off. Samsung needs to look at Tylenol for an example of going above and beyond for its customers. So with that said, I have a $350 microwave that lasted less than 2.5 years so maybe I will just purchase a cheap microwave every year. At least, I will get a new one each year and may be more cost effective,

How to fix Samsung microwave SE Code - We had the exact same problem ... SE code out of the blue, keypad wouldn't work at all. I have the solution and all you need is a Phillips head screwdriver, no skill required for the rest. I searched internet, found a YouTube video on how to take the panel apart. Unplug your microwave, follow directions to take panel off - a 5 minute job. Unplug and replug blue and white connectors...easy. Take some rubbing alcohol and wipe off that green ribbon (I read this a lot on other sites). While you have everything apart, wipe down the inside, there was some gook behind the panel so I figured, what the heck. I put it back together, plug it in. We haven't had any problems since. Save your money, this is a very easy fix. I feel like the quality of every thing these days is cheap, made overseas **, so having this happen in under 24 months did not surprise me. I, like everyone else, got the Samsung SE error out of nowhere, at around 18 months after purchase. I read all these reviews today and was about to go shopping to replace my SMH9187ST microwave. After power cycling it, the SE error would come back between two minutes and immediately. So far, after I did what I did, it hasn't happened in 8 hours. So here is what I did. Hopefully this will work for someone else. All you need is a Philips-head screwdriver and I didn't even have to remove the microwave from where it was mounted.

Take out the top two screws. They fasten the top front vent grill to the microwave. To remove the vent grill, simply slide it to the left and pull out. Now when that is removed, you now have access to the one Phillips-head screw that holds on the dreaded keypad on the right of the microwave. Remove that screw. Then, slide the keypad assembly up and wiggle left and right to slide the fingers that hold it on to the microwave free from the slots they are in. Now once that is free, you can pull it out and see the few connectors that connect the keypad to the rest of the microwave. There is a white connector and a blue connector towards the bottom of the back of the keypad assembly. I simply reseated those connectors. Meaning, I unplugged them then plugged them back in making sure they were snug. The blue connector seemed to be a little loose when I went to reseat it. I'm thinking maybe it had backed its way out somehow and was causing a bad connection, therefore giving me the SE error.

But that's it. Line up the keypad assembly fingers back up with their proper slots and slide it down, therefore lining up the screw hole on the keypad assembly with the screw hole on the microwave and put that screw back in. Then slide the top front vent grill back on from left to right after lining up the little fingers with the slots they fit in. Then screw back in those two screws that hold the grill on. My beeping that was happening has now stopped and I've microwaved a few things since. It took me no more than five minutes to figure out how to open it up, reseat the connectors, and put it back together. So far, problem seems solved!

I would like to offer an update from my earlier posting of July 20. My wife and I have struggled with this MW since around the 1st of July when it defaulted to the ubiquitous "SE" error code. Been there, done that on unplugging/plugging the unit. I was hopeful in that after writing the first review, the MW actually worked for about a month without a problem. That's after I took the edge of my hand and pounded on the keypad out of anger. I thought I may have finally solved the problem, but to no avail. The SE code came back. I've tried the two button solution as well without success.

So fortunately, I purchased the MW on my American Express card and by reading my recent issue of "Money Advisor," published by Consumer Reports, it suggested to check your credit card for warranty beyond the manufacturer's warranty. I did that and found that AMEX warrants any products for a year beyond the manufacturer's warranty. Thus, AMEX refunded my money for the appliance on Aug. 29. Yeah for AMEX! So the decision to make was to have the unit repaired by replacing the keypad or to purchase a new MW to replace it. Since it would cost me an installation fee on top of buying another MW (certainly not a Samsung!), I decided to call Samsung to inquire as to whether or not Samsung recognizes a faulty part being produced and installed in these MWs.

The person I talked to at Samsung just a few minutes ago basically told me Samsung has no record of any problem with the keypad and thus nothing has been done about correcting the problem on future keypads produced. So more MWs by Samsung are out there with the same faulty keypad! How disgusting and really a fraud. Decision made: I will buy a new MW and certainly not a Samsung one! It will be purchased using my AMEX card!

The representative warned me of the warranty. I reminded them it was still in force. The repairman again replaced the control panel and now for months later, it stopped working again. I was warned of the warranty. I reminded the rep this has been an ongoing issue that they should be investigating why it continues to happen. They said they would give me a one-time repair. The control panel was replaced again and the thermostats. I have tried to contact Samsung to request that this be investigated but find it difficult to find the proper department to discuss this.

As in many of the other reviews, I also experienced the dreaded SE error code on my range microwave (model 9197). I realize that it's probably hit or miss as to what type of help you will get when you call Samsung’s customer service center; however, I was very lucky to get an articulate, responsive person who seemed to be well aware of this problem. He did offer me a one-time courtesy warranty extension which will pay for the repair of my unit. If it has to be replaced, I am ready to fight that battle next!

I began getting the dreaded SE error code about 2 months ago. I kept resetting the Samsung SMH9187 microwave, and it would be fine for a short time. About 2 weeks ago, I couldn't reset anymore. I contacted Samsung, and they said that the unit was out of warranty but they would send someone to fix it. I got a call the following day and was told by the repairman that the charge would be $145.55 for the part and the rest in labor. I only paid $210 for the unit and said I would hold for now.

I called Samsung the following day, and after spending 40 minutes on hold, I spoke to a rep. He asked what I'd like them to do. I replied, "Replace my microwave!" He said there was no way he could do that and asked me to hold. Another 20 minutes passed, finally, he came back. He said that he would "extend my warranty out for a one-time repair." It's 17 months old. I contacted the repair man the next day, and he said he did in fact hear that from the company and would order the part. They are due to come out tomorrow. Persistence paid off. However, I will never buy another Samsung product. I am keeping my fingers crossed for my TV.

We purchased the Samsung SMH9187ST microwave OTR from Best Buy in early 2010. This unit was one of the top-rated OTR microwaves on Consumer Reports. The oven has been very lightly used as we have a second microwave in the kitchen (a Sharp which is over 7 years old). Anyhow, 29 months after purchasing the Samsung, the keypad is showing the SE code and is basically unusable. As others have experienced, this is a known defect that Samsung should take care of but won't. I will be sadly buying another brand to replace this nice looking junk, but I would eagerly participate in a class action lawsuit against Samsung!

I called again to see if they could get me an alternate service guy. The response was no one was available. Meanwhile, I am out of a MW and had to get a counter-top model for $100. The product quality is very poor. Samsung as a company is really not an appliance company. My last Kenmore survived 12 years. I should have stayed with Kenmore, WP or something similar. We bought a Samsung SMH9187 in April 2011. It started to give intermittent (1/month) SE error and beeping around November 2011. We did not call for repair as the microwave still worked. The microwave completely stopped working in May 2012. We called Samsung to inquire about the error and learn whether there was any chance the warranty would cover it, since it began months before the warranty expired.

They attempted to argue that the warranty was from date of manufacture (and thus ended in November 2011, thankful I had my receipt with date of purchase). We were informed that Samsung would pay for the replacement part but not the cost of installing it. Their authorized repair company would call us in 48 hours. We didn't hear anything from them for 5 days. We called Samsung and asked if we could have the part sent directly to us, no, this is against their "policy". The authorized service company indicated a cost of $145 to replace the part. However, they can't do anything until Samsung Service includes more information in their service request to the "authorized dealer".

I contacted Samsung again and asked them to provide me with the part number that needs to be replaced. They gave me the phone number of their "authorized parts dealer" and told me that this dealer can provide me with the part number. The authorized parts dealer told me that they can't provide me with the part number over the phone. I need to go to their website (samsungparts.com) and look up my model # and use keyword "control panel". I'm told that the part I need costs $78.98 (she can tell me the price but not the part number?!)

I still don't know the part number that Samsung was going to provide me for free, but the website has two parts called "control panel" for my model of microwave, one of which is $78.98. Luckily, the website does include the part numbers. I checked Sears Parts Direct and found the same part for $40.99. I ordered it, paid $11 shipping, and I'm now hoping that the replacement process is relatively simple.

I understand that things break, but, after my experience and seeing all the Samsung SE stories on the internet, Samsung products and service are terrible! I'm beginning to think that Samsung is purposely making it difficult to learn about the meanings of the error codes and how to repair them, so that you use their service company or buy parts from their overpriced supplier.

This 16-month-old Samsung microwave had the dreaded SE error code. I tried unplugging it to recycle and nothing worked. After reading all of the reviews, I knew I was doomed. I called Sears only to find out it was a common problem. And, as the previous complaints say, it will cost more than a brand new one to fix. I also read where it was a known problem with the keyboard circuit and yet Samsung still would not give the consumer a break by recalling it. I then read one entry in Google regarding the problem which said to hold the cancel and reset button down at the same time.

I didn't have those buttons, but held down the clear and start buttons at the same time - say 3 seconds, at most. Well, I held on for dear life for about 20 seconds. All of a sudden, the unit started beeping. I let go - and oh, my God, it reset! It seems to be working fine now! This is obviously a scam by someone. Otherwise, why is this fix not mentioned anywhere? It looks like I stumbled across a $300 secret. Hopefully, this helps others. By the way, even if a tech came out and was able to do the same thing, it still would have cost the $75. What a shame.

I replaced 15-year old Sears Kenmore appliances with what I believed to be top of the line Samsung appliances. Boy, did I learn a lesson. Problem number 1: the oven dead shorted a heating element. We had a service man out for the repair. He didn’t have the parts. Evidently, Samsung replacement parts are not well stocked or easy to get. We made our own repairs. Problem number 2: the refrigerator ($2700 French door, freezer below) started leaking water under the deli tray and freezing. This appliance has a service plan and the service tech was contacted. It took two weeks to get the part, which was shipped in to our house from California. He made the repairs. The problem was solved for a while.

Six months later there is water in the same location. Problem number 3: microwave door handle broke off at the mount. Cheap plastic connection between metal and plastic. Then the key pad started dead shorting and shutting down the breaker. The problem only occurs when you set time and run machine. It doesn’t occur when the preset buttons are utilized. Samsung appliances all less than 2 years old all have problems. The replacement parts are scarce to find except online. All the service techs I spoke with spoke very poorly about Samsung appliances in general. I am completely done with Samsung forever. I just had to replace our 15-year old Kenmore dishwasher. I didn’t even consider Samsung even though it would match our other appliances. I am only going to buy American made appliances in the future. They may not be as high tech or fancy looking, but they work and last and you can get replacement parts. 3 Samsung appliances, 3 bad experiences, 3 strikes--you’re out.

I purchased an additional warranty on everything except the microwave because I have had cheap microwaves in the past that last more than 15 years. Who would have known, 16 months later, the microwave would be the first to give me problems. I started receiving this error code "SE" and the manual states to unplug it and plug it back in. Well, I tried that several times and it did not resolve the issue. Finally, I called Samsung and was told that a service repair person would need to come out. Never once told I would have to pay for someone to come out and check it.

When I received my call back, I was told there is a $90+ charge just for someone to come out and if parts are needed, I would have to pay for the parts and repair. I am so frustrated right now for a microwave, not just any microwave but a Samsung microwave to break down after just 16 months. Well, when I asked approximately how much would it cost to repair the microwave, I was told it depends on if they had to order a part and if so, what part. I am sure that this is not the first time anyone received this error code and surely someone from Samsung (the maker) can tell me what the problem is and approximate cost, right? I feel it is very unfair to pay and have someone come out to tell you that it will cost hundreds to repair, potentially paying more than I paid for the microwave. All I want to know is for other repairs related to this error code, what is the approximate cost and I will never refer anyone to purchase a Samsung appliance.

The cost of the repair is about $260. I tried to explain to them that even though the microwave is no longer under warranty, I would think a $400 microwave would last longer than 18 months. She said I am eligible for a new one if they have to fix the same issue twice within a year. That doesn't really matter to me since I would have to pay to have it fixed twice. She didn't understand this concept and could not get past the fact that the warranty had expired. Now I have 2 options: get it fixed or buy a new one. My new microwave was installed in middle of May 2010. Magnetron went out 3 weeks ago. There was a very loud buzzing noise. I called Samsung and I was given an appliance repair service number. A week later, they said magnetron has gone and will order part. I asked does if this microwave have to be taken out of the wall to repair? Does it stove need to be moved out? He said yes. I told him that this has only been installed for 6 weeks, and why not just replace for a newer but same model. It is not only defective but it's on the recall list. It has no Samsung sticker logo inside which, Samsung on their web has noted, may have problems. Apparently, Samsung has chosen to repair a major part, Magnetron!

This is a total inconvenience to us and I do not feel comfortable with repairs. Since it has only been used for 6 weeks, and not 6 months, it makes no sense to me that for a $116 microwave, Samsung will pay $400+ to have it repaired. Why can't they just replace a recall item that will have to removed from the wall still. If in the process of removing it, they scratch the door or anything else, they will have to replace whatever was damaged. Moreover, I also will continue to complain if the microwave is not working correctly or scratched in any minute way.

I have complained to Samsung again for a newer production same model from Lowes. They have refused because of their prodical to repair and said it was not cost effective. Cost effective to whom? Our time and inconvenience should be considered, not cost effective to us for our purchase. Also ridiculous to consider cost effective to them for a $116.00 over the range microwave that will cost them hundreds for continual repair if not done correctly. I doubt it will be fixed without other problems arising. I will have to stand there, look at what he is doing, then give him towels to protect new cupboards and stove.

Who is really losing here? When all they had to say is "I am sorry for the inconvenience and we will have Lowe's send a new one out". I will never consider Samsung because of customer service.

On 12/29/2009, we purchased a new Samsung stainless steel kitchen French door refrigerator, electric range, dishwasher and over-the-range microwave. Days after installation, the microwave started making a loud clicking noise while it was in use and I immediately called Samsung’s customer service. I was provided a case number and was told that I would hear from the repair service within 24-48 hours to schedule an appointment.

Three days later, after not hearing from anyone, I called Samsung back again to let them know that I had not heard from the shop and the microwave had stopped making the noise but would still like it to be checked out. No one ever called and no one ever came to check out my new microwave but since the noise had stopped and everything seemed to be working ok, I let it go, rationalizing that even if they did come they would find nothing wrong since the noise had stopped.

Over the past year, the noise has come and gone. Sometimes it’s very loud, sometimes it barely noticeable and sometimes it’s completely gone. But on 11/12/2009 I decided that Samsung would have to have someone look at it before it failed completely after the warranty expired and I again called Samsung customer service to request repair service. Again, I was given a case number and was told that the repair service provider, VA. Home & Electronics, would be in contact with me within 24-48 hours to set an appointment.

Two weeks later, after several phone calls to Samsung and several unanswered messages left with the repair service, we still had no service appointment scheduled. I then demanded a different service provider which was then provided with a new case number and a new promise that someone would be in touch to schedule the appointment. On 12/02/2009, A-1 Appliance called to schedule the appointment for 12/07/2009 but not before several other problems started with our microwave. The handle broke off of the door just by pulling on it to open the door, several buttons on the touch pad stopped working and the microwave would turn on by itself at random, necessitating disconnection of the microwave to prevent it from turning on in the middle of the night or while we were away at work. On 12/07/2009, A-1 Appliance repair showed up as promised and diagnosed the microwave as needing the turntable motor, the touch pad and complete door assembly replaced. The parts were to be ordered and a follow-up appointment would be scheduled to come back and install the repair parts. "Typically," I was told, "it takes about a week to get the parts."

On 12/04/2009, the microwave has been broken for two months and after a dozen or more phone calls to Samsung and A-1 Appliance. I am told that the parts are still on back-order with no ETA provided. I have been sent to Samsung’s "Executive Customer Relations Dept." ( if there is such a thing ) and I have demanded a replacement microwave instead of this incessant waiting to have their junk repaired. The representative that I spoke with took the purchase location information and placed me on hold for 20 minutes while she called Lowe’s to arrange for the replacement. I was told to expect a call from Lowe’s in 3-5 days but it usually happens much faster than that. Well, guess what? It is now 12/10/2009 and no contact from Lowes’, A-1 Appliance or Samsung.

I called Samsung and threatened legal action against them if the microwave was not replaced as promised. The customer service rep explained that the original "executive claim" file had been marked as "resolved" and the case was closed. So I was provided with yet another claim number--of course, this department is closed on weekends so my follow-up call to them ( an my attorney ) will have to wait until Monday morning. I then called Lowe’s that was supposedly contacted while I was on hold and was told that they have no record of this claim. Not that I really want another piece of junk appliance made by Samsung, but the appliances match and I wouldn't want to have an unmatched piece in our relatively small kitchen. If there are any class action attorneys reviewing this post, I invite you to contact me for whatever information you need to file a suit against Samsung.

If Samsung went out of business tomorrow, it would be no great loss as their products are junk and their customer service is non-existent! To those of you who have not yet made the mistake of buying a Samsung appliance, I give you fair warning: Don't, you will regret it! Their appliances look good but keep this in mind: "You cannot judge a book by its cover." The microwave is one year old and has been completely useless for the last two months and counting waiting for Samsung to repair or replace under warranty. We had a special order for a "Samsung Platinum front loading washer and dryer" which we have cancelled and are instead buying another Maytag set, which are highly superior in quality and reliability and require, in all of my experiences with Maytag, very little, if any maintenance throughout the life of the appliances.
