I have ordered service many times through HomeAdvisor and was happy every time. Each time I got one or more contractors calling me right away to give me free estimate or to fix problems right away! I can see customer reviews of these contractors online and provide review based on my own experience. This is such a nice way to connect service providers and customers. I highly recommend HomeAdvisor!

I was able to find tile and tree service contractors. They promptly responded and did the jobs well... with no hassles. This is quite reassuring when hiring people you have not used or been recommended by friends or neighbors. Much better than taking a chance with someone unknown. I feel confident that HomeAdvisor screens contractors and would not tolerate a less than satisfactory job by the contractors they recommend.

First, I asked not be contacted by a provider, but was, and 2nd, that provider was 90 miles away from where I said the project would be. All the others listed were also in the same locale 75 to 90 miles away from job site. Not worth paying workers to drive 2 or 3+ hours per day to job site. I should have been given names of contractors in the area where I said work was to be done. Not good results this time. Have had better results with HomeAdvisor previously.

Spoke to a few contractors who called. One was very responsive and I probably would have used him even though his pricing was higher than another caller. However, he made one comment saying the existing door sizing was custom and a standard door wouldn't fit. I'm not an idiot and that statement wasn't true. So that made me skeptical about everything he had to say. It turned into a trust thing. A second contractor sounded really good but had absolutely no follow through. He didn't show up when he said he would. I had to call him to find out why and get the information he said he would send. And, he didn't follow through on a second request. I felt I was chasing after him to give him my work. So I said the hell with all of them and got the job done on my own with standard size doors from Home Depot. The doors look great. I'm pleased.

I quit HomeAdvisor almost immediately after I saw that they were scammers. Months later they are still calling. Why sign up with them again? Am I a glutton for punishment? They could've resolved the issues that they seem to have with everyone but that means they would have to stop lying and return money. I was able to get my money from the credit card company but that was months later. After posting a review on ConsumerAffairs they responded to make it seem like they were resolving issues. As I stated, they never returned my money. Now, the current issue is to get me off their call list.

Poorly qualified leads get passed on to me. Many times the poor lead is just snooping and has no knowledge that they are initiating a request for service. There is no request to verify that this person has enough money to even hire someone to work for them. The whole process is to try and scheme you out of much as cash as possible. It's a constant ploy to squeeze every penny out of the consumer as possible from DAY ONE. Don't believe me? I'll give you a breakdown of how it works:
2a. Lead Flow - Leads come in and you CANNOT deny them. My leads cost anywhere from $14-$30.
2b. Lead Flow - You can 'Pause' them, but ONLY for 14 days.
2c. Lead Flow - You can lower your 'Monthly Cost' but $100 a month is MINIMUM.
3a. Cancellation Process - Slow your leads for 14 days and then they come right back.
3b. Cancellation Process - NO OPTION to do this online. You MUST call a 'Cancellation Rep'.
Here's how this company could make money and stop taking everyone's money like scavenging trolls.1. Allow Cancellation Online at ANYTIME.
2. Allow to 'Pause' Lead flow for as MANY days as the Customer wants.
3. Stop Charging a ridiculous Start Up fee.
4. Allow the people paying (Me) to decide when I want to pay, not when you want me to pay.
5. Stop acting like my money is your money. I signed up for a service not an automatic pay system to put money in your scheming troll pockets.
The whole business model is lazy and setup to benefit ONLY Home Advisor. 1 Star- Because the people I met through Home Advisor (Three) were fantastic people.
Update: I was going to show a screenshot of the Lead Flow ridiculousness, but apparently... Once you have selected 'Turn On' leads, you cannot 'Shut Off' leads in the same day. Imagine that...

But I thought I surely when I leave my experience on their review portal, I would surely have a chance to plead my case. I never counted on HomeAdvisor Completely ignoring it, they didn't even post it. Turns out they filter their service provider complaints. How can you trust a company who filters complaints?
HomeAdvisor advertises they protect consumers from bad business practices and yet they are the one I needed protection from. If we have no course of action when we get treated badly from one of their service providers, why are we doing business with HomeAdvisor in the first place. I no longer trust HomeAdvisor or the businesses they claim to represent. Sad they leave you out in the cold as if they don't care you had a terrible experience with one of their vendors. If you are thinking of using this service as a contractor... Use them for what you need then immediately cancel. I've had numerous reps tell me to pause my leads and that caused me to forget that I had an account with them. They then just charged me for a renewal on a service that had never brought me a lead, and the service they provided which did bring leads in the past hadn't been used for 6 months. 80% of their leads are people trying to get a bunch of quick estimates.
Want contractor leads? Nothing works like the old fashioned way of engaging the actual customers and providing them with a great service they value. HomeAdvisor just brings you weirdos and then charges you for the leads regardless of how the encounter goes. While using them they were sending me work leads 60 miles (1.5 hours drive) from my house on small jobs. Total scam, people will eventually catch on. So HomeAdvisor has contacted our company on 3 different occasion in the last year to sign up. Always a different salesperson. They tell you very deceptive facts about their service. The only way to sell their service is to tell you it only costs 81 bucks right now and it's going up to 119 if you don't sign up now. Then they tell you leads cost about 16 bucks. After requesting an actual chart of lead prices it turns out those prices are closer to 40 and 50 dollars per lead. Then they sign you up on a ten day free trial which is nothing more than fake leads with no info meant to entice and tease you to sign up. They also don't know your area at all and send you leads from areas you would never travel to, Their sales team is also given absolutely no ability to sell their service. They can't give you a real sample lead, they can't negotiate a trial use. They give no free leads every month which in my humble opinion should be offered with the trimonthly charge they do.
Once their sales people lose faith in the fact you are going to sign up they get real short with you and shut down. Upon telling their rep they aren't working with me and they are sending me leads from outside my area, I get this response, "Listen, I don't have your account anymore and I am just a sale consultant. I just work here. I'm sorry you aren't happy and that my company couldn't help your company. I'll forward this email to the power above me. Please have a great day." - **, followed by: "I don't know why you are being rude to me when all I did was try to help you out! You don't know me. You don't know my life, so why email HATE?!!! So like I said, I'm sorry it didn't work out for you."
Stay away from these people is my suggestion. Spend your money on local advertising. I could see if you were a new company with no references that this may be useful for a short time. But other than that, all I got was a sense of greed and dishonesty from everyone I dealt with there. And I usually don't take the time to write reviews about anything. But these people are something of a special nature.

We had used HomeAdvisor for about a year and decided to drop them last fall. The reason why we dropped them is simple. HomeAdvisor pays to sit at the top of Google search and advertises for various construction projects. Homeowners searching for a contractor click on their link and fill out a form. HomeAdvisor then sell the prospects information to paying contractors as leads. I don't have a problem with this at all. The unfortunate issue that I have is that HomeAdvisor says that they screen their contractors, but they really don't.
Then they also sell the prospects info to 10-20 different local contractors. I personally had to pay $68 per lead I received. I don't mind paying $68 for a lead, in fact that's pretty cheap for a good lead. Unfortunately, these are TERRIBLE leads. Customers are getting blanketed with 10-20 immediate phone calls and after about 5 calls, they don't even pick up their phones. There were several "leads" that I got charged for that I couldn't even talk to because they got flooded with calls. I spoke to a homeowner that I did get to and he said he would never use HomeAdvisor again because he received over 10 calls within a half hour. Two of the contractors that he have come out he would let near his house.
As a professional contractor, I will never use and never advise anyone to use HomeAdvisor. It's great for the fly-by-night guys who have trouble finding work, but not for a professional looking to build his business. As far as getting out, HomeAdvisor does NOT have a feature on their website to cancel your account. They basically hold you hostage and auto renew your credit card. It took me over three month and several strongly worded phone calls to severe ties with them. Buyer beware.

I spent more time on the phone with Homeadvisor customer service than I did calling bogus leads. Complete waste of time and money. I'll be the first on board for the impending Class Action Law Suit. Overall: Improper installation of new furnace, since corrected, five years after installation, so my problem is not with the installing company; my issue is with HomeAdvisor, who refused to post my 5 year experience. Angieslist posted it without any questions asked. A few weeks ago I was contacted by someone from HomeAdvisor to check on the review; he gave me an email address to send more details (receipts) about this review and a previous review that is incorrectly recorded on their website. Unfortunately, that email address turned out to be incorrect.
Details: Sullivan Super Service Pittsburgh installed a new high-efficiency furnace in our house on 3/11/2010. The cost to us was $5,393.00. Over the years, while the furnace appeared to be working fine, we kept getting notices, during the winter months, from our utility company that we were using more power than comparable neighbors. This was in spite of the fact that we lowered the temperature to 72 when the house was occupied and to 58 when it was not occupied, or we were sleeping.
On 2/20/15, I found on inspection of the furnace that there was a visible gap (about 2) between the furnace forced air heat outflow duct and the main house HVAC duct. While the furnace was on I could feel the hot air escaping from this gap into the basement. In other words the forced-air from the furnace was escaping into the basement, even before it had a chance to heat the house. This appears to explain the problems we are experiencing with using too much power during winter months and inability to maintain a modest temperature in the winter with a high efficiency furnace.

My company has used ServiceMagic, HomeAdvisor for more than 5 years and have paid for more than 1600 leads. My complaint with them is their policy of denying any lead credits for whatever reason if it is beyond 30 days for when the lead charge was incurred. I have had duplicate leads and leads that were sent to us during times when we had requested the leads to be placed on hold, not be issued credit. That is inexcusable as far as I am concerned!
Additionally, in order to receive credit for previously issued leads (duplicates), I have to spend my time re-entering every lead name back into their search box to do my own detective work to see if I had been previously been given and charged for this lead (weeks, months, years earlier). I have uncovered even more lead duplicates when I had converted their lead information into an Excel file and was able to screen information based on address, phone number, etc...
If you are not wise to opening multiple tabs on your web browser, there is no easy way to request a credit from a duplicate lead. Their website design, I would hazard to say, is intentional in not being user-friendly in that regard.
I often request leads to be turned off for the weekend using my smartphone. HomeAdvisor has a mobile app. For example, I requested on Thursday 2/26/15 to have leads turned off for the weekend. This is the message I receive back, "Your leads are paused and will resume on 02/28/2015." The only problem is that 2/28/15 is a SATURDAY! How is that off for the weekend? Any credit requests for this beyond 30 days is also denied!!! Their own programming or lack of ability to read a calendar costs you as well.

After a couple hundred dollars in payments and nothing to show for it I called into HomeAdvisor to cancel and after a lengthy conversation they assured me that I was canceled. Not long after that my bank issued me another cc due to some other illegal activity so I was thinking the nightmare with HomeAdvisor was over. A month or so later they started calling me again claiming that I owed them money. I said that I had canceled and they said that there was no record of that. I have been getting threats to be taken to collections and finally gave them $80 yesterday to shut them up and hopefully make them go away for good! I wish I would have done more research on these guys. Absolutely criminal what they are doing!

HomeAdvisor contacted me about "advertising" my construction business on their site. I stupidly agreed to an initial $90 charge for a "supposed" background check. I'm pretty sure it was just a charge to validate my credit card #, because it took all of 90 seconds to complete. Originally the fees for the "exact customer match" that I was informed of were actually more than double the agreed amount. They later informed me that the fees they mentioned were for a whole different region, not my area. But according to them that wasn't their fault. And they refused to refund anything I had already been charged for.
The next thing were the leads from customers that weren't interested in actually hiring anybody and I wasn't able to even contact most of the leads I was sent. Yet I was still charged a fee for every match that was sent. Next issue was that they were asking for services I didn't even offer on the HA website. The only viable lead I received was for an hour of handyman work. That was about $40 of paid work with a $25 fee to pay to HA. Huge profit margin. I was again told it isn't HA fault for bad leads even though that's what they are getting paid for.
"Warning to all contractors and consumers": Do not contact HomeAdvisor about any services. They do not offer a legitimate service and should be investigated by the Better Business Bureau. I will be filing my own complaint with the BBC. Any consumer looking for a trustworthy contractor should use Angie's List, at least they don't lie to their customers and screw their contractors out of their hard-earned money.

I enrolled with harm advisor in November of 2014...Not one lead was legit. They stole close to $1200 out of my bank account before I could put a stop to them. No invoice, no billing notifications, no warning. They simply went into my account and pillaged. Yes, I gave them my info to do so (at an agreed price of $80 a month) NOT hundreds a month. Very painful lesson learned. A congressional investigation into Home Advisor is necessary.

Our HVAC company signed up with Home Advisors for a 3 month trial. I only wish we had read this reviews before doing so. Immediately they began to send us bogus leads. Most of the people we called had no idea who we were. Only one lead out of the hundreds of leads they charged us for led to an actual site visit. It was an old church with no money and needed major, major repairs which they could not afford.
They hit our bank account for a large sum of money. We had no idea what these amounts were for since we could not quantify the leads. Every time we called to cancel the account, they would put the account on a "30 day hold" and still send leads. We finally closed our bank account. We have called them and emailed them over and over. Yesterday, we finally spoke to a real person who said that we can't close our account because we owe them money for the leads they have sent us even though we weren't active. They are now going to send us to collections. We have contacted the Better Business Bureau to report their shady business practices. All I can say is, if you as a contractor are thinking of signing up with this "outfit", DON'T DO IT.

I wanted to refinish my hardwood floors, so I started comparing local flooring companies. I decided to start my research on Home Advisor. I searched for the best companies in my area and I was initially pleased with the results. The companies were all rated very highly and the reviews were great. I decided to call a few of these companies and request quotes. I called the first company on my list and a Home Advisor representative picked up. She expressed her gratitude for calling Home Advisor and said she sees that I am interested in calling this flooring company. I was confused on why the phone number listed on the website under the flooring company was answered by Home Advisor.
The representative stated that some companies choose to contract Home Advisor to manage prospective customer calls. A red flag went up in my mind, and I chose to end the call. I then researched reviews on Home Advisor outside of their website and was shocked at how consistently other consumers rated Home Advisor so poorly. I would not doubt if Home Advisor carefully screens and chooses which customer reviews are posted on their website. Consumer Beware.

I used to be a paint contractor with ServiceMagic.... When I got tired of their false leads and bogus credits, I quit, leaving them an $11.00 balance, which they hunted me down for a long time. I was sorry that I didn't leave a balance for $10,000, instead of the paltry eleven... Then I got romanced by HomeAdvisor, who assured me that they changed their name along with their practices and that everything was different and better now, such as the most important change being that now they "QUALIFY" every lead before sending it to their contractors, eliminating the drunk dialer, the window shopper, the prankster, etc. So, I signed up again (and paid that eleven dollars I owed) and I have to admit that my first 4-6 months was pretty good. I closed on some good job leads, and didn't on others, which is the name of the game.
Then, it started to happen again. I got charged for leads that didn't even include a contact number, or that wanted a service that I didn't provide, or didn't even mention a service. Once again, I started to request a credit, as you simply CANNOT get them on the phone..... Three credits were denied. I threatened to quit, and then I got 2 "bogus" leads, which cost me a lot of money.... In order to satisfy the credit they issued me, they gave me 2 leads of people looking to borrow money for a mortgage, and thought that "HomeAdvisor" would steer them in the right direction. Now they think we're even. We're not. They never reimburse the money they take out, they simply throw you a similar-priced bogus lead to shut you up.

They ended up contacting me and fixing the situation. I still gave 3 stars because of the trouble they put people through to get issues resolved.
Original Review: Feb. 3, 2015
On 9/3/2014 I spoke with a rep named Debbie to cancel my account. She told me I had credits on my account and that the next 3 months would be cheaper. I agreed to continue to use up the credits and asked that my account still be cancelled at the end of the 3 month term. Lo and behold on 12/3/2014 my credit card was charged. I immediately called in to have this refunded and they refused up and down. I called back in on 12/12 to speak with a supervisor about the situation and a possible fix. I informed her of my conversation with their rep. Corrine told me she would look up the phone call and get back to me. No response whatsoever for the next month. So I went through my credit card company to dispute the charge.
My credit card company did not hear back from Home Advisor and in turn cancelled the payment. Then on 1/28/2015 I received a "Final Notice" saying they were going to send me to collections for $100.99. The breakdown was $80.99 for service from 12/3 - 3/3 (which I was not getting) and for a $20 credit card chargeback even though they did not attempt to respond to my credit card company. It is now 2/3 and I called in to avoid collections. I spoke with Barbara a Supervisor who said the best they could do was lower the charge to $50. She refused to even contact the original rep who said they would listen to my call and that the only option was to pay $50 or go to collections. She told me blatantly that they did not believe me about their original rep telling me the account would not renew nor would they investigate the call. Sad how a company can hold you hostage like this.

Then, they had the nerve to say I owed them money and called a collection agency to collect. All in all I lost $600 and closed my personal account. That's right, I never give my business account information over the phone. Overall, this company is not real, it's a scam, run by people who don't have real jobs. As a contractor I will never again pay somebody for work. As a contractor I will go out and make my own money. And on top of it all they call me at least 3 times a year to use them again...HA HA...I won't make that mistake twice.
If you need a job done find a contractor the old-fashioned way...on your own. Look for referrals from friends, check out websites (don't forget Facebook, I use this), and look them up in the yellow pages. I've been on both sides of the aisle with this company. As a business owner and as professional and as a homeowner/consumer.
As a homeowner: I tried this company to locate professionals to provide services as my newly purchased home. I got leads from companies I had never heard of and who lacked experience in their so-called area of expertise. Never hire someone who lacks references in your immediate area.
As a business owner: At the same time I purchased my new home, I tried using them for new business. 95% of the leads were bogus. Due to the large amount of "ghost" or bogus leads, I started doing a Google search on their leads' names and their addresses, which as you know, is provided with each lead. What I discovered was that most leads were fictitious, some of the homes, based upon their lead's addresses were actually vacant homes.
The topper was when I discovered (after a Google search) that one man (business lead) was actually arrested and sitting in the Du Page County jail for theft - that was over the top! The Google search had the full written news story that was published in one of our local newspapers indicating the man's complete names and address, which corresponded with the Home Advisor lead information sheet which they (Home Advisor) had emailed to our office. I sent his information to their management and without any difficulty, I received a full refund for all the money and our account was closed. Based upon this information, I would highly advised anyone from using the services of this company!

However when they went to run the "background check" I failed and not because I have a background I have to pass multiple FBI background checks to be in my current profession. The problem is they don't run a real background check. They run some kind of public records search so if you share the same name as a convicted felon then get ready to be amazed. This is what happened in my case. It took me seconds to find out this guy is 20 years older than me. However HomeAdvisor now wants me to pay for an actual background check to "clear my name"...really!! Seriously!! First of all why did they need my social security number if they aren't gonna use it. Secondly how is it you're gonna say you run a background check when you're just searching for a name? I think that's very misleading. Also how thorough is it if someone has a common name? Lastly it is ridiculous to make people who want to use the service fix the broken process in their so called background check. They need to get their processes in order.

I was looking for a maid and was going to use Angie's List but saw it was a pay-service. Right under it was an ad for HomeAdvisors.. which appeared to be just a regular website, no fees. Just a portal to look for housekeeping services in your area but inputting your info (name/address/phone/service needed). As soon as I did this, it came up with matching results and asked if I wanted to be called or to just view the matches on my computer. I clicked view matches on computer. Not more than 60 seconds into looking at the matches to evaluate the companies.. reviews, etc.. I start keeping phone calls on my cell from maid services who said they were automatically given my phone number via email or text and charged a FEE that is automatically taken out of their account for being provided with my name/phone.
First woman asked me about coming out to give estimate. I hadn't even reviewed any of the matching businesses on my screen yet! And NOWHERE on this website does it say you are going to be getting phone calls. Nowhere does it say that merely providing your information is going to kick off a chain of events where every local housekeeping service will be automatically pinged with my info & money taken from these peoples accounts. That is crazy. 3 more maid services called me within 5 minutes!! I had to scramble around their website and go to "My Account" (didn't know I had even set up an account), and change my phone number to a 1111111 number so that the calls would cease.
I tried to call the business (4pm pacific time) and got a recording that business was closed although message said they are open until 11pm. There is no voicemail option. You just get disconnected. Sorry, but this REEKS of scam to me. I told the first maid who called me that she should not be letting any company automatically deduct money from her account just for providing her with the names/numbers of people who MIGHT be interested in cleaning services. How can this be legal? Someone should investigate them ASAP. I will call them tomorrow, earlier in day and see if I can reach anyone to complain.

I went to HomeAdvisor.com because I qualified for a HE Loan and decided that it was time to get the rest of my house done, having broken tile on bathroom shower walls, and new flooring needed upstairs, as well as some downstairs work. I submitted my interest, deciding to start with the tile. I submitted a separate lead for flooring. I was connected with several contractors and 2 contacted me in response. I understand that it is because they are charged a monthly fee and then $60 per lead, if they take it, as a contractor told me.
The young man that came out was very nice and kind, and seemed to know his stuff. We talked about flooring, and I mentioned that I was getting tiling work done too, as well as some mortar and moldings, and he let me know that his company could fulfill all that I needed. He did give me references and they did check out, whether or not they were valid, which at this time I doubt.
It took me three months to get to the point of getting the work done, as my HOA delayed some insurance needs for my loan's final approval. When completed, I took care of urgent things first; consolidation, and then set money aside for the home and later, my son's first used car. I contacted the Contractor, and we signed a contract formally. He requested a 25% down deposit, and indicated the work would take two weeks, Monday through Friday. He cashed my check the next day and did not show up on start date, five days later. He did not call and he did not answer calls, emails or texts. I contacted HomeAdvisor.com the next day. They indicated to me that he had ended his contract in the month of December and that their steps were a COURTESY. I felt certain in much of their conversation that they were trained to take no accountability or responsibility. I questioned them about their pre-screening process and whether background checks were done, and I was told that they were.
After this incident, I did a lot of research on this contractor. At first, I found nothing. Then I found a great story where he rescued a dog. Then I found two good reviews (unauthenticated; Yelp) and one bad review (unauthenticated; Yelp). The bad review was similar to mine and the loss was $4000, with 1/4 of the work done only and then disappearance.
I have done a lot of internet research and did a background check. This contractor has between 7 and 10 offenses; some traffic, some felony, some non-disclosed without additional fees (yes, I gave Intelius a negative review for that). It was quite the rap sheet. With this information so easy to get, I suspect a lot of leniency on the part of HomeAdvisor.com and discourage individuals using them as a resource as you could get scammed as I did.

Here's the deal: You will land around 30-35% of your leads if you CONTACT LEAD IMMEDIATELY. The general public isn't aware that the HA client is paying for leads so they put in requests for lack of nothing to do. That's part of the process. For us, we may go through 10 leads that are worthless. Then hit a lead like we did last month for an outside mall landscaping that we bid on and got at 8K job. Spent $400 let's say for that lead. Worth it? Heck yes. If not happy, try Networx. $225.00 per month for unlimited leads. They ARE NOT AS GOOD as HA. Remember: HA advertises which is good. Last comment: Stay away from Angie's List. They will be gone soon. Bad company. Arrogant jerks.

The sales person signed me up to be a home advisor contractor. I went through their screening process and they got my credit card. I was told to sign up as my company name (corporate entity name) rather than my company name that is known to the public. My name was marketed as an LLC name that isn't known to the public but rather registered to the state, and my DBA name was not displayed. I was then told "they would fix that later". Then my card began to get charged on leads that didn't match up to what I did. I do mud jacking, foundation repair, etc and I was getting leads for cabinet making and custom windows. I tried to reach the sales person but got no response. This company should be shut down and charged with fraud. Do not use them as a contractor. The sales person's name was Uriah in Overland Park, Kansas. I tried to email him many times but got no response. I then called him and his office and got bounced around to many call centers and resolve wasn't had. I am now opening up a fraud case against them and I am filing a police report as well. I was charged $105 in the last 2 days on leads I didn't want, under a company name that isn't known to the public, and not granted a credit as of yet.

They gave me a bad contractor to do my floors but it was nightmare. They did not resolve the problem and fix the laminate in all rooms. The Oahu Flooring did not fix the problem. They did not remove the old tiles instead they did the easy by going over the old tiles. The contract to remove the old tiles and dispose of it first, but they did and the contractor bailed out and another contractor to finish the job. So the bathroom has different tiles and they glue it good and one is already coming out.

We have been using HomeAdvisor for a year or so. For us, about 80% of the leads turn out to be nothing. No answer when called, no reply when emailed about the project. So far, only 1 of the remaining leads turned into a contract. The other real leads either did not get the work done, or went with someone else. However, there appears to be a way a customer can find contractors on the HomeAdvisor site that have a profile that fits their needs calling us directly. In this case, 9 out of 10 have turned out to be a contract. I suspect (like some of the comments say in this forum) since these people are taking the time to find a contractor rather than blindly seeing who responds to their request, they are serious about wanting a real contractor to do real work.
Expensive, yes. Time consuming yes. Refunds No. However, this site does provide a profile for us with reviews that is working when a customer takes the time to find us, rather than us finding them. We recently started a Facebook page and our website will be published this month. Let's see if these other media choices bring in different results.

We set up our account after a rep contacted us. We paid $80 for a set up fee and for a 3 month trial I believe. In three months time we were sent 5 leads - all of which did not apply to our business or were out of our geography. We are a pest control company and were sent leads for Bees (different licensing and something we told them we did not handle) and termites (same as above). As each lead came through we called in to Home Advisor and they said they would remove the charges. After the fifth incorrect lead we called and they had accrued the charges for all the leads they had sent, plus a $70 late charge for not paying for them. They then offered to cut this in half and close the account... I obviously declined and said that I would not pay even half for invalid leads. They agreed and said they would close the account.
Then two months later I received a letter from CMI (their collection agency) that said I owed $165.01 now. They did not remove the charges but instead sent the balance to collections. After calling in, the customer service supervisor "JD **" agreed that they had dropped the ball but said that there was now nothing they could do. He recommended that I pay them and then set up an account with Home Advisor again and they would issue me a credit towards any future leads... RIDICULOUS. My credit is now being affected because people failed to do their jobs.

I started with Service Magic and put a cap on the amount of monies I spent each month. I received a lot of leads but complained quite often to them about the number of leads that I received that were not even resulting in a returned phone call. Then there were leads that were people that were just curious about what something would cost, but had no intention of pursuing a project. I myself still to date sometimes fall into a Home Advisor trap looking for pricing on materials, and suddenly I have contractors calling me to install windows when all I was looking for was a price for a window to install as a contractor. As a result 4 contractors would have to pay for Service Magic's services.
After many months of this I reviewed the pros and cons and looked at the projects that I did sign as apposed to the money I spent and decided that I was picking up more profitable from other sources and canceled Service Magic. Of course they apologize and sent me some free leads then more leads and kept billing my account until they Maxed out my credit card and went to my backup business card. I was forced to change my account and block them from billing on my business account. I received a new credit card and business card. After many heated conversations they went away.
When they changed their name to Home Advisor, the phone calls would occasionally come in wanting me to come back, and I politely told them no thank you. In June of 2013 I started receiving emails from Home Advisor telling me I needed to update my billing information "they were ignored". Then the phone calls and more emails until I blocked the emails and ignored all texts. Then I received a last call from a salesgirl wanting me to start up with them again, and in detail I explained why I was not going to use Home Advisor. She offered me some free leads. I said "you can send me free lead but no THANK YOU ".
The following month I received a letter from my credit card company that I was overdrawn. Home Advisor updated the date on the old credit card and billed me for $755.00. I reported it to my card company as fraud; they reversed the charges. When I called Home Advisor, they refused to drop the charges and told me I should have turned off my leads. I NEVER TURNED ON MY LEADS OR UPDATED MY CARD INFO. Now they have sent it to a collection agent.

The way they charge your credit card you can't even tell what it is for. They charged me over $600 in a month. One of the leads was for work I didn't do which Home Advisor gave me a credit for. One lead I did not get, someone else got the lead, BUT I AM STILL CHARGED. The third lead I made 3 attempts to contact the customer and finally received an email stating that the customer had her brother do the work and didn't need my services. I contacted Home Advisor, but they WOULD NOT do anything to help me or credit my account, even though I had the email from the customer stating that she used her brother to do the work and never used anyone from Home Advisor. OUR EXPERIENCE WITH THE CONTRACTOR THROUGH HOME ADVISOR WAS THE WORST EXPERIENCE WE HAVE EVER HAD. Home Advisor claims to match homeowners with qualified service companies, but this is clearly a fraudulent service. I felt like this was not going to be a good fit for our company and was not going to be profitable in the long run, so I kindly called to cancel our account and get refunded. They told me that they will not refund me the initial $89 quarterly charge for being on their online directory and having an account with them. Their only solution was that I can "turn off" my leads if I don't want to receive/pay for them anymore. I would prefer to be refunded my $89 and cut all ties with Home Advisor, but they don't want to cooperate with that request. I was specifically told when I signed up that we were not under contract, and I was definitely not told that the $89 was non-refundable. Told me he didn't even own a computer, I spent much time on the phone with Home Advisor and they refused to refund me the money for the bogus lead. Imagine if 20 years ago, the phone company came to us and said that they would charge us a fee and they were going to help customers turn the pages in their yellow page book and help them find our ad. Would you have signed up? I wouldn't. The internet is here and we all have access to it. WHY are we paying a third party to insert themselves in the middle of our business model so that they can advertise for us. We all have complete access to advertise ourselves on the internet. I signed on to this operation, being told that I would be paying for LEADS that would put me in contact with customers. I was not told these same LEADS would be offered to others, nor was I told I would enter into a competition. I'm now up to 14 LEADS, with only being able to do one of them. The only reason I was able to do one of them, is because it was an accessory (the minor low paying job). That same accessory was originally sent to me at about 5 times its original cost. I had it adjusted, but found out that almost half of the LEADS are way above what I was told, and are for some reason always coming in above the price on the list.
For instance, to mount a TV on the wall, is supposed to be around $16.00. I've had them go up more than four times that amount. And when cancelling, they won't issue a refund, but offered more LEADS. And we agreed to only four, but now I have a balance they won't remove. If they would have cancelled when I asked them, I would not have this balance. I have the balance because they could not issue a refund and ask me to take four more leads. But that turned into me still owing them more money. I could go on, but this is the worse and most corrupt operation I've ever had to deal with. Their system is designed not in your favor.

HomeAdvisor wants to keep these bad and unreliable contractors for their business. In order to do that, the HomeAdvisor cheat the consumers by: 1) Removing all the negative rating/comments from these bad contractors, so that these bad contractors are still showing as 5 stars. I was not aware of this trick until I found my comments were removed recently. That bad contractor I hired still had 5 star with a statement of "100% of reviewers recommend this pro". 2) HomeAdvisor doesn't do background checks, but they still declare that these contractors passed the security check. Therefore, people put their trust in HomeAdvisor, yet they hire unreliable contractors.
Via HomeAdvisor, I hired this 5 star company in March, but lost a huge amount of money. This bad company is not registered anywhere, either state or county and has no credit, and no bank account at all. Of course, no tax was paid. I believe that HomeAdvisor should be responsible for my losses. This company is all about making money and is not for the consumer. After being bugged 3 times a week from them and told them to put me on their do not call list many times, they finally caught me at a weak point by offering me $100 worth of leads and telling me how they do this stringent background check and only the best of the best is accepted by Home Advisor... Ok so with AAAAA rating on Angie's List (I was told that's why they wanted me) they do my background check and call me and inform me I passed with flying colors, so they sign me up and collect an $85 fee to get the ball rolling. The next day I get a lead. I call the woman and she tells me my company already spoke to her and she told us she was not going to hire us because she felt uncomfortable.
At that point I told him I was confused because I never spoke to her before. She said Long Island Powerwash was there this morning and I told her she must be confused because there's only 1 Long Island Powerwash and I was not there so I told her I will call her back in a few moments. I hung up the phone and went on Home Advisor and to my surprise there was a company calling themselves Long Island Powerwash but the difference was there was space between power and wash so this guy goes under Long Island Power Wash. At this point I call consumer affairs in Nassau and Suffolk county to see if he is licensed and insured and was told there is only 1 company that goes under that name that is insured and holds a license that that was MY COMPANY!
At that point I call Home Advisor and inform them of this problem. I was told they will look into it and call me right back. Of course NO CALL so the next day I call and get the run around and again they tell me in a few minutes I will get a call back, AGAIN NO CALL. So the next day I call again and demand they take care of this issue because after all they do this stringent background check and how can this company be on there with no license or most importantly NO INSURANCE. They tell me they will call me back and I told them I will not accept this and demand to speak to a manager. So after waiting 10 minutes on hold a manager gets on the phone and informs me that yes this company is part of Home Advisor but there should be no problem because there is a space between power and wash with the other company.
At that point I ask is he kidding me and what about the fact this company holds no license or insurance and why did they not see this when they did their background check. At that point he tells me he only needs a license if it is offered by the State of New York. At that point I tell him it does not work that way. You need a county license 1 for Suffolk and 1 for Nassau and he holds neither. He tells me sorry that's all he needs is a State license. If one is offered and it is not... At that point I lose it and demand they take me off their website and I wanted my $85 dollars back. He tells me that they will take me off but it's been 3 days since I signed up and I already received leads and my grace period is over.
I was stunned and hung up and called the woman I spoke to 2 days before to explain what was going on. So she agreed to let me come and give her an estimate. So later that day I go there and give her the estimate and show her what this company is all about and show her my AAAA rating on Angie's List and she hires me on the spot. She told me there was no way she would hire that company and she felt uncomfortable and felt the company was sketchy. I have called Consumer Affairs and informed them of this company and was told they would look into it. It has been a month since I called Consumer Affairs and they did nothing and this company is still part of Home Advisor..... This company is flat out liars and is not for the consumer. At first I was very happy with Home Advisor. About 50% of the leads I got were actual people that would responded to calls, were looking for quality as opposed to the cheapest possible price, and paid their bills. After that, whether or not you convert the leads into clients is entirely dependent on you and not HomeAdvisor.
In my second half of my first year with Home Advisor they changed their settings - now, instead of me being able to set my own lead coverage areas, they had to that for me. It was a bit of a hassle as I constantly like to tinker around with my settings but in general, it worked out. After that, things went downhill. I live about 8 miles away from a large city. When I originally was able to set my lead coverage I had initially included that city; however, I quickly realized how stupid that was. After that I only had 5 zip code areas for 4 small towns/cities.
At the beginning of my second year I started transitioning out of a full time manager role. I was planning on selling the business in about 8 months and transitioning into a different career. I called HomeAdvisor once again to adjust my lead coverage area as I wouldn't be checking in too often so I wanted to make everything as simple as possible for my workers - making sure that the large city was not in my coverage. A few weeks later, I noticed I had gotten several leads from the large city so I again called to ask them to adjust. Same story - this time I paused my leads and HomeAdvisor called asking what they could do to help - I told them again that I wanted the large city removed from my coverage area - they again told me it was taken care. There were at least 6 or 7 calls of this nature in about a month.
After this, I got married and was out of the country on my honeymoon and then out of state for an extended period of time - when I got back in state, I didn't check my account for a few weeks. I came back on this morning and to my shock, there were tons of leads from (you guessed it) the large city. I checked my lead coverage formerly, they had only made the mistake of including a few zip codes from the city but, oh no not this time. There were close to twenty zip codes from the greater metro area of the city. I immediately called to discuss they refunded my credit card $33 and then offered $150 in free leads - I said no way. I haven't added up everything nor do I care to, but from a ballpark estimate the total damages (just of the large city leads, not including the good leads) were close to $1,000.
HomeAdvisor is a decent company selling a decent product. However, if you in any way want to adjust your account semi-regularly, do not go with this company. The reps lowest on the ladder are the ones who do the adjusting, so it will most likely take multiple calls for them to even get one change right - now Imagine wanting to change and tinker with your leads once a month or even once a week - an absolute nightmare. On top of that, you will have to call every time you need a refund because they botched your coverage area. If HomeAdvisor went back to the old way where you could adjust everything and if you needed help, they'd do it for you, then they might convince me to come back (if I was planning on staying in the business - oh, and if they wrote me a check for $1,000).

It was like some kind of real estate scam where they try to "sell" you on their services. Then half of them never showed up. One guy showed up in a Mercedes, no ladder, wouldn't even go on the roof and left after about one minute after calling me about 5 times (no joke) to "confirm". Whatever you do, DON'T give these people your contact info. As far as we can tell, none of the companies that called us are any good.

We purchased 36 different leads from Home Advisor before we caught on to the scam they were pulling on the local contractors. We did land 3 of the jobs we called on from them which was a good thing. Back to the scam we receive many leads that we accept and pay $92.00 apiece for their "market match" leads and $112.00 for their "exact match" which you are forced to pay for no matter what. When you call for a refund on leads that don't EVER answer, they tell you that it's not their problem and no refund. Meanwhile the "exact match" leads are suppose to be exactly that but we have called many leads and have the so-called customer say they have too many people coming to look at it and hang up if they answer at all which is more often than not. Why would a REAL consumer fill out a specific questionnaire and then not answer the phone or emails or messages?
When we asked the Home Advisor "MANAGER" on duty what we are suppose to do he told us to pretty much harass the customer going to their private property and pushing them into talking to us. I am sure this is not what the consumer wants to hear how their personal information is being thrown out to a lot of different contractors. I did contact the news telling them about the experience and feel they should be investigated for fraud! Please leave feedback for us to read so we can figure out how to keep these people from scamming NEW contractors and SMALL businesses.

I recently conducted an internet search for a company to haul away materials in my back yard. I found a local company with good reviews, but when I called the "company" number, I got a HomeAdvisor representative who stated that the company pays them to forward leads–all well and good. During the course of our phone call, I inquired whether they represented other contractors for a specific project I needed done. When she said yes, she stated she would forward a list of local contractors to me, from whom I could choose. She took my e-mail address, but I never received any list. What I did receive over the next few days were phone calls to my personal cell phone from contractors saying that I had inquired about a project. Problem is, I never gave HomeAdvisor permission to give out my phone number to ANYONE except the one contractor I originally thought I was calling. Not only that, one of the contractors informed me that HomeAdvisor had charged him $40 for my phone number! Poor guy had to pay for their fraud. I would advise contractors NOT to use this company. You are clearly being ripped off, by a company who appears to use fraudulent business practices. I sent an e-mail to them, but have not heard back.

They of course promised me a goldmine with their lead system. It sounded like a good idea so I thought I would try it. I was very clear to her when setting it up that I would not stand for bogus lead which as it turns out everyone I have gotten is exactly that. When I called in to check, discuss the issue, I was pretty much told oh well & would not receive any credits. Not only do they bill you for leads they have sold to someone else too but their system for filtering out the leads is useless at best. Nothing but tire kickers. Not one was a real potential customer.

This company is a fraud, stay away from them. They prey on new contractors that are starting and promise them only things that contractors want to hear, and is only lies that pile up one after another. So, be advised, don't give any money. Find a different way of advertising-- either your local newspaper or better, delivering flyers is better than giving your money to home adviser where you will be spending your money on dead leads.

I was approached by these folks to list with them at a very reasonable price, so I did. I was immediately told that they could generate many high quality leads for reasonable prices. So far, not one lead has turned into a job. Not one. But I have been charged for every lead up front. I contacted customer service about my concerns and received nothing but double talk. In a nutshell, I was told "that's tough." I will not take any more leads from them and write this off as a learning experience. I would warn other contractors to think twice before buying into the Home Adviser program. They made lots of nice promises to me, but did not deliver on a single one.

So about a month ago I was told about this company, we have been in business for over 10 yrs but because we moved to a different state it was like starting all over again. I landed with Amber as the sales person and she gave me a $100 credit towards leads for being referred. When she explained how the company worked I decided I didn't want to do it because I would pay for all leads I received including the ones that I didn't get the job. Then her way of convincing me to do it was she would personally monitor my credit. Once I was getting close to my $100 she would contact me and ask me if I wanted to continue with them. If I said it wasn't working I would keep my profile up on their website for the 3 months I paid for and not receive any more leads. I said ok!
Then as we were setting up my account they had problems doing my background check - took them 2 weeks. As a result Amber said she would give me an extra $100 credit because of the inconvenience. That sounds great right? Well not really... I started getting hammered with leads that I would call and no one would answer. At this point I wasn't too concerned because I was told I would get a call as my $200 credit was close to being over - 2 weeks later and I never heard from Amber so I decided to call and guess what? All I would get was her voicemail. After numerous calls I got a hold of her "manager" who told me that she no longer worked there and not only she didn't give me the extra $100 credit but she also has no power or way of keeping track of my leads so that call I was waiting for was never going to happen.
By this time I was already with more than $400 worth of leads charged on my credit cards that is an estimate of 30-40 leads, in which I only got a response of 5 leads and only 1 I actually got the job. Honestly sounds to me like this website is a total scam and I just wish I had read all of this reviews before agreeing with them, and giving them my credit card information, social security number and all the other info I gave them.

Beware of the slick talking salesmen that call from Home Advisor! They will not tell you of all the charges and do not tell you the REAL price of the leads. I was not told there would be a reoccurring quarterly fee; in fact, I was told it was a one time startup fee, which was an outright lie. What they really did was waived the startup fee and charged me a reduced quarterly fee. I was told leads would cost me between $14-$25, when in fact leads cost me $20-$30. That may sound like a small difference, but it does add up and makes a big difference to our small family owned business.
The salesman never told me how to monitor or control my leads, which lead to more leads the first 2 weeks than we could handle. It was not until I called support that I was instructed how to manage lead control. Then there are the dead leads from people just out playing on the web! This was the last straw for us. If you get a lead and can not make contact with them it is a dead lead to me and they WILL NOT give a refund! The only way they will ever give a refund is if the person generating the lead gives the wrong contact number. NEVER again, please avoid them like the plague!!!

Anyway I agreed to pay ten dollars and do not remember how many cents per lead, now they are charging me 21 dollars. That is a one hundred percent increase, and is not fair. Home Advisor has a call center that preys on new service start-up companies. These are usually the guys that think just because they're working, they're making money. You will find the cheapest contractors on there, also the type of contractors that might not call you back or even been in business 6 months down the line. Home Advisor is affiliated with Homewyse, a website that provides misleadingly low pricing information on services they are targeting. By providing such pricing guidelines, they encourage the user to keep searching which usually leads them to the Home Advisor website. The only way to stop this company is for good contractors to refuse to give them any money. We need to do everything possible to stop other contractors from feeding this evil telemarketing beast.

I have been a flooring contractor for 20 years and not one complaint and say they do background checks on their contractors. So they called me and told me that they found a felony that I got 30 years ago. Well they should have done their homework and see that it was for possession of a prescription medication without a prescription that a friend gave me at the time for pain for I was hurt on the job.
They should not have the right to do that and they should have checked my record as a contractor. Not one complaint and about my company and not check me for something 30 years ago; give me a break. And after reading these complaints, I am glad they did stop giving me leads but this isn't right for I made a mistake, which I don't really think I would call it a mistake for a friend helped me out. And I never hurt anyone or stolen in my life. So keep away from them and online used to be good when it started, but now that people like HomeAdvisor got hold of it, they rip you off and they should be the ones charged with felony counts. Thanks for listening people and good luck.

I'm General Contractor for the company BOA Heavy Construction Corp. I advised not dealing with the HomeAdvisor website. They are very unseen hustling into your bank account. Since HomeAdvisor agents promoted us to pay per lead plus monthly fees $125. Most leads that I received which costs roughly $40 to $130 dollars per lead. Most homeowners didn't answer the phone, and I still have to pay a lead $110, and some homeowners just wanted to know about my price to do nothing and I lost that costly Lead $90.00.
Online service is no good to run your company because all the website-based homeowners are not too serious to hire you and you will have to pay per lead. Most homeowners are more interested to hire you is the "best way" in your local county newspaper ad or Google's Pay-Per-Click. I put to stop HomeAdvisor to run my account, they sent me a letter demanding $1,100, since I only got two leads which those homeowners who bought cheap in favor of higher quality or better stuff with lowest as possible on labor cost.
HomeAdvisor sent 10 least contractors to visit to a same homeowner. That owner is seeking the lowest cost bidding system. Undocumented workers asked for $300 dollars bidding compare $3,000 for a Pro. Website-Based HomeAdvisor will get you 2 out of 10 leads instead newspaper ad gets you 18 out of 20 calls. Don't waste of your time with HomeAdvisor or any of Website-Based Hustlers whom they seek your credit cards only.

Another national company working the numbers. Never again. National companies, especially internet ones, make their money on the odds that by being nationwide if they can make a few bucks, or a few hundred, from a million people, they will get rich. The sales rep never told me that my card would be charged every month without my authorization. I was told I could call each month and put money into my account, as much as I wanted, to get more leads.
Then, after the first month, I was leaving the country and had just submitted some bids so asked to put my leads on hold "for the maximum amount of time." I was told that 30 days was the max. After 30 days, I was notified that my leads would resume. Fine... I still had some of my initial $200 in my account. Then when it ran out, I received an email stating that they had a "potential lead" but I did not have enough money in my account to cover it. I didn't care because the truth is that even though the sales rep Peter ** told me it takes customers a good half hour to fill out their online service request... which meant they were serious... it takes more like 30 seconds, free of course, and 99% of the leads were what you'd expect on the internet... people fishing for prices. I put a lot of time into my bids and did not get a single job. I replied to the customers immediately too. So I decided not to put any more money into my account.
Then I received another lead. I thought hmm... well maybe there wasn't enough to cover that other one but this one is smaller and I must have had some money left. But then I received another so I called them. You guessed it... They had been charging my card all along. So I asked for a refund since I was never told that would happen. They even admitted it was not on paper but that "you were informed verbally" - I was NOT! Their reply... "Under no circumstances do we issue refunds." Even when they are wrong! They offered me "a few free leads" which I turned down.
To top it off, in the course of the conversation, the person who said nobody had more authority than him when I asked to speak to his superior said... "You should have put your leads on hold for 90 days if you were busy." 90 days??? I was told 30 was the max. So... In other words if I would have been told that at the time I put them on hold the couple months worth of charges would never have been made and we wouldn't even have had that conversation!
So he goes on and on... "Well, Mr. **, you got an email stating that your leads would resume therefore you could have called and put them on hold again so it's your fault." Well, Mr. Supervisor, I figured I had money left so I'd let it run out. Then the email that said I didn't have enough to cover a current lead told me that I had in fact drained my account. "Well then Mr. **, why didn't you call when you got a lead after that?" I told you 3 times Einstein because I thought the next lead was cheaper and was covered by some small amount that I must have still had in the account. But then I got another. "Well, Mr. **, why didn't you call when that one came in?" I did! Right NOW!
"Sorry... no refunds under any circumstances, Mr. **." Is that a recording or what??? So let me get this straight... Even if it is your fault and by misinforming me twice you were able to sneak several hundred dollars from my account, you cannot and will not issue a refund? "No sir, can I offer you a few free leads to stay with us... I want to work with you." Ok, Mr. Supervisor, how about this then.... Let's each bear 50% of the responsibility here. Give half of my money back in leads instead of just a few. They cost you nothing anyway. "I'm sorry, Mr. **, I am not able to do that." What! I thought you wanted to work with me.
So that's how Home Advisor Pro makes their money. By getting contractors all over the country to sign on the line and even if they do cancel their membership, by then they have made hundreds of dollars. Imagine if you or me made hundreds from half the contractors in this country. Easy money and lots of it. For nothing.
One more thing: They tell customers that they make sure all of the contractors are quality ones. I needed a concrete job done at my own home so I filled out their form. That's how I know how quick and easy it is. One contractor called. We talked for awhile and he never called back. When I mentioned that to the sales rep... the one who told me they have a reputation for having great contractors... his reply was, "We have some good contractors and some bad ones. Sorry about that."
If you are a contractor, find your business somewhere else. If you are a customer, don't waste your time. They will send any contractor who is willing to let them take his money.

This company is all about lies. I signed up on August 7, 2014 and specifically asked the lady on the phone "So if I don't get the job I don't pay for the lead?" She said "no, you don't." I asked "how do you track that I am reporting correctly if I land the job or not?" She said "all calls are monitored and routed through our company with extension assigned to each contact." Not that I would do that because I am probably one of the most honest people you will ever meet. I was just curious as how they would monitor what jobs I landed if I didn't pay for what I was not awarded. Sounded too good to be true. I agreed "sure sign me up."
She had me listen to a recording that I had to push 1 to approve or 2 to decline. Well the whole time that I was supposed to be listening and pushing buttons she was telling me how long winded the recording was and if I could not push the button and listen at the same time she would push them for me from her end. I have no idea what she agreed to for me because my buttons did not work and she was longer winded than the recording.
I had lasik surgery the very next day and was advised not to strain my eyes, no computers, and dark glasses for 48 hours. Immediately back to work after that, not really concerned about homeadvisor at the time because I had not even call about a job much less been awarded one, so I was sure I had nothing to worry about. My ac went out and I was talking about this great company with the owner of the heating and air company. He stated to me "Oh no Miss. _____, you better check on that because I signed up with them and they charged me for every number and even numbers. I immediately went online and lo and behold, I am down almost $ 2,000.00 in less than a week.
I have not landed 1 job and have paid out that much money. I was told they would credit my account for leads that was a long distance but as I just checked, they are refusing to credit due to my sign up area. I had told the lady no more than 15 mile radius and I am in Canton and she has majority of the leads coming from Austell, Powder Springs, Atlanta, Kennesaw. Each lead ranges from $15.00 - $78.00. I will be filing a lawsuit.

Some people when you call insist they never wanted anything done & do not know Home Advisor.
