1.0 star rating. 11/19/2015. I purchased a Bradford White water heater because I thought I would support a company that it is American made. Pathetically, they are NOT supporting me while after ONLY 3 years I lost hot water due to a FIRE WITHIN THE UNIT and a defective blower. Yes, those are on warranty BUT I have had to pay for 3 visits from my tech to sort out this problem and that they will not support me in covering these expenses! They try to tell me it's my poor quality of water, what a load of crap!!! I will NEVER EVER purchase another product from this company. Maybe they should listen to their recordings of how they have high quality, years of trouble free problems. Reliable?? What a horrible company with which to deal and absolutely no support!!! BEWARE before you purchase a water heater. Buy from another company!!! Their service is awful.

I purchased model m1403s6fbn in 2012. Immediately I noticed something wrong with my water pressure. I called the water company, who installed the unit, and they said it was an existing problem not connected to the unit. I then noticed water collecting on the top of the unit and called them back. It still took 2 other visits, until a person from the Bradford company came and said yes, it was definitely the unit. They did replace it but it was 2 weeks of back and forth. Well, now 3 years later and they have to replace it again for the same reason. I have to pay $500.00 installation fee. I have no water and have to worry if it will happen again. I don't think it is fair that I have to pay installation for a product that has a history, at least for me, of this issue.

In July, we replaced our 16yr old hot water heater with a Bradford White hot water heater. I know regulations have changed, and this was maybe one of the first models, so we tried to give the benefit of the doubt when it started leaking 4 months later. So, we called the installer, who promptly replaced it with another Bradford White Defender hot water heater. It has been 3 days, count them, 3 days, and it is leaking already. What is wrong with this product???

I purchased my first home back in 6/2010. 6 months later my water heater was leaking and my home warranty ended up replacing with brand new Bradford and white water heater which I came out of pocket 275 for. I was told the unit comes with 6 year warranty. On 8/27/15 the gas was shut off temporarily then pilot would not light. Had plumber come out to light pilot but was told valve would need to be replaced and they would confirm warranty. Bradford informed plumber that unit was no longer under warranty because Bradford had unit as a replacement and rolled over warranty of original unit from a different company.
Bradford would not honor the 6 year warranty of the new unit which I feel is unacceptable especially when they are aware of the faulty valve on these particular units. I will continue to expose this unethical business practice until there is a resolution or correction made. My children and I have been without hot water for a few months now while I continue to get the run around.

I purchased a new home not to deal with a broken hot water heater. I called Mike ** at Bradford and was told he was in a meeting (surprising). And we all know that he called me back, NOT. My house is two years old and my hot water heater broke. I needed to call for service and the service man called Bradford. My hot water heater wouldn't light. Bradford told the service man to replace the GAS VALUE and the PILOT ASSEMBLY. REALLY I think that Bradford White should reimburse me the $450.00 it costed me to repair the crap.
Hard to believe that a house that only has two people living in it, could possible use the Hot Water Heater that much to break the gas assembly and pilot in two years. In all honest I can't ever remember my water heater breaking any gas parts. Just remember the parts might be under warranty but the labor is expensive. DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT. EVEN THE COMPANY DOESN'T CARE ENOUGH TO RETURN A PHONE CALL.

Our Defender series heater stopped working recently. It is less than two years old. A technician diagnosed the entire pilot assembly as bad and replaced it. The heater still didn't. The technician also determines the gas control valve to also be broken. How does a relatively new product fail on multiple fronts? Bradford offered no consolation.

There are only 2 adults at this location. No problems until we would go more than 2 days with no use of hot water. Had strong sulfur smell. Neighbor suggested pouring bleach down well head. Cleaned smell after 2 days. Worked a couple of times. Now, after 7 years stinks all the time. Read that the problem is the anode. Why should this happen? Makes no sense to me. Out of warranty 1 yr ago. A 50-gallon tank for 2 people should last more than 7 years w/o repair. Not happy. Would not recommend.

I had replaced my hot water heater after 19 years of having an AO Smith hot water heater. I had the Bradford White only 14 months and we were having problems with the bathroom smelling like rotten eggs when the hot water was ran. My plumber diagnosed it to be the anode in the heater. When he removed it he said it was a generic part in it. I called Bradford White and they would not help with the part or the labor. It cost me $275 to have this part repaired. I would never purchase a Bradford product again.

We switched from an older, gas powered water heater when we did a renovation. The water heater wasn't malfunctioning, we just wanted something more efficient. We got a Bradford White direct vent water heater. In the space of one year we have had to replace a sensor twice and replace an entire "module" as well (the control box on the front). Our old water heater was "set it and forget it" - this one is "set it and pray"...

I had a Bradford White Defender gas water heater installed four years ago (model RG1PV40S6N). Two weeks ago I went down in the basement and found myself walking in an inch of water. The water around the base was red from rust. Plumber replaced it, it was under warranty, charged me $50 because the new unit from the supplier is supposed to be better insulated. If it were not for the fact I had water damage to furniture and cardboard boxes filled with clothing, three hours filling and dumping the shop vac, no hot water... I would give this a dissatisfied 2-star rating, but I am angry. Plumber's total bill this time was $291, materials, labor and tax. After plumber finished job I went to Lowe's and bought a water leak detector, placed it on the floor next to the unit.... wish I had done it a month ago.

A hot water heater was installed last year, 50 gallons LP gas. Today I felt smoke coming out from that room. I open the door, I saw the control box (gas valve) engulfed in flames, not from the burner, just the box in front of the tank. Thank god I was still able to shut of the gas and avoid a catastrophe, but this is a very serious matter. It is very dangerous, it should get the attention of public and safety regulators.

Thermal Coupler is bad after 4 years. I contacted Bradford White after having plumber from Mike Diamond let me know the unit is under warranty. After contacting BW, I was told to contact Ferguson Plumbing Supply. After waiting for about an hour to let a new employee figure out how to handle a swap of a warrantied product, I was told I owed $25 for a handling fee. What the heck was he talking about? BW told me it would be a swap at no charge to me. I contacted BW and they told me it was up to their supplier. I told BW I will NEVER buy another BW product and he didn't seem to care. What a ripoff! I could go to Home Depot or Lowe's and pay about $6 for a thermal coupler and install it myself with any other water heater, but NO... not with BW. I guess we're going to get rid of this unit and get a tankless water heater. Thank you, BW, for helping us speed up the process to purchase another mfg's tankless water heater!!!

I am really surprised by all the bad experiences with the Bradford White water heaters I am reading here. We have a 40 gal electric model #m240s6ds2, if I read it right. It's a beautiful model and was installed in 2005 by the owners before us. We purchased this house (built in 1978) in 2006. We have never had a problem with it at all but because the year it was installed, and everyone says most last for 10-12 years, I am thinking at getting a new water heater before this one starts going bad or falls apart (even though it still looks brand new). I certainly don't want to have a big mess on my hands.
I am now afraid to get another Bradford White because of what I have been reading here. Was the company sold since 2005… or are the contractors not as good/experienced as they were before. I mean something had to change for these newer units to be so messed up! Or are these complaints only from folks that got gas water heaters? I don't know a friend told me to just get a Rheem from a local Home Depot and forget about it. I have to say I am going to miss this beauty though, it's been great for us.

On May 22 I had several walls and carpet dried and repaired. The morning of 24 May 15 the new Bradford White water heater burst again... Another insurance claim to repair my mechanical room and basement. Since the heater is less than a month old it is under warranty and will be replaced at no cost. There is still the issue of labor cost to pay for the licensed plumber. I will never again purchase a Bradford White product nor should anyone reading this.

50 gal propane water heater - This unit is five years old. Every year the pilot light goes out at least four times. Sometimes I can blame it on the wind, but not this year. In this last week, it goes off every other day. I might get a good hot shower in before it shuts off, if I take it right after I have relighted the pilot light! This isn't convenient at all - must I relight it every time I need hot water? It's still suppose to be closer to brand new. My first one of a different brand lasted 15 years! What am I suppose to do, rebuild the damn thing! Yes, I am disappointed!!!

I just Googled "Bradford White" to see what models are available as my husband and I are almost finished building our vacation home and want to install a Bradford White unit. I'm shocked to see the reviews posted by others because they couldn't be further from our experiences. Our first home had a Bradford White unit that was brand new and outlasted its 10 year warranty by 2 years. We bought another Bradford White when it came time for replacement.
Our next home had a Whirlpool water heater that was 9 years old with a 12 year warranty and it leaked within 4 months of us moving in. So, we replaced it with a Bradford White. We've had nothing but great experiences with Bradford White, but there is something to be said about who does the installation of your water heater. We frequently refer family and friends to get Bradford White and we've yet to hear anything negative at all. Which is why I'm so shocked to see the reviews posted here.

Problems with the Bradford White Defender Hydrojet WH - Pertzborn Plumbing installed this brand and model at their recommendation in 12/09 with a damper. It is the only gas appliance in my home. The ignition assembly and gas valve had to be replaced in 1/'14. On 4-5-15, my CO alarms went off when I came home. I called MG&E who tested and found 300 ppm CO at the site of the WH. They shut off the gas and the WH. Opened windows, doors and vented the house with fans. Afraid and stayed at a hotel that night. Pertzborn came next day and checked things out and took out the damper they had originally installed.
My HVAC Co. came the same day and checked out the ventilation from the water heater to and through the roof. Nothing was blocked. I bought two new readout CO alarms and they have read 0 (at about 10 feet from water heater) ever since. There is no separate makeup air for this water heater in this opened door room. Neither the plumbing contractor nor HVAC Co's has mentioned the need although backdrafting appears to have occurred. My house is not airtight and I have always wanted it that way to avoid this kind of occurrence. This water heater has been nothing but an expensive headache. It also has cost me $25-$30/month to operate and I am the only person in this residence.

My home is only 2 yrs old and I'm having to replace my 40 gallons gas water heater, REALLY? From reading the reviews it seems like we all have something in common. We purchased a piece of garbage! Apparently it has been leaking for some time now but by the grace of God the drip pan has contained the water and there's no water damage (unfortunately the unit is upstairs). It's still under warranty but I really would like to install a "better" brand. I've contacted the Plumbers that installed the water heater though the Builders and they're going to replace it but I'll have to foot out the labor which is $350. Buyer beware! Complaints have been made since the early 2000's and this company has yet to better the quality of their product.

Water heaters may be the best, but the customer support needs some attention. Soon as the warranty is over, they will let you deal with it, and won't help at all. Sorry some of you may not like my comment, but that was my experience with Bradford White. So if you planing to buy Bradford White or have one, make sure you service it every year that's on commercial EF100T199E3N2. What I suggest is that you service the water tank and the space burner, 'cause the vapor may condensate inside the space burner and you will have a mix of dirt, oxidation and some type of insulation, and the error code will say valve FAIL. But the real problem will be space burner full of water, so all you need to do is just vacuum off the water but make sure you get just the muddy water and not the insulation. The bottom of space burner is fill up with some type of insulation that may damage the unit if remove it - this should be in your manual but is not. Hope this will be helpful for someone. THANKS keep smiling :) By the way I'm not angry, but I believe in GOD.

Husband is HVAC certified so he called BW and spoke to warranty dept. and tech support. General consensus was that it should never have been installed in a laundry room but outside like the garage because of dust and lint from the dryer (this room is 10x18 ft and w/h is at opposite end from the dryer). So of course the warranty will not be honored. Vacuumed all around it...blew it out...still won't stay lit. This puts it conveniently outside the 6 year warranty. When I called the company I was told sorry, it is out of warranty they (Bradford White Corp) will not do anything. I had to replace my water heater @ 4 years ago (that one had served me well for 14 years, never an issue) and the company I was dealing with only used Bradford White which I had never heard of before. Well it failed after only 4 years in September of this year. I was shocked and disgusted. I had paid extra for a 12 year warranty and with them based in Michigan I was lulled into thinking I was purchasing a quality product. The original company replaced the water heater which I grudgingly consented to because they said the only way the warranty would be honored would be to get another Bradford White. However I had to pay the labor cost of $330 plus the cleanup I endured is priceless in my hours and effort. Timing was atrocious as well (was to leave on a trip that week so that was a negative shadow) so all in all an awful experience and huge disappointment!
The installer found no cause except that the Bradford White water heater of only 4 years was "defective"! I thought innocently that when Bradford White was aware of this they would compensate me for the labor costs. I called in October and got a front line employee who told me, “Well it does not work that way," meaning I should be happy that it was replaced. I said, “well what about this concept, that you produce a quality product that will last longer than 4 years." I would have been happier with that. Now my warranty does not revert back to 12 years, it is only 8 with the deduction of the 4 years.
I kept going up the chain and ended up speaking with Dustin Bowerman who is the CEO. Initially he seemed nice and concerned and had me send photos, personal info, model/serial #'s but then responded back that they do not want to set a precedent. The water heater failing was bad enough but to waste my time with the false hope that they would offer some compensation was I thought especially cruel. He stated that they are an "Employee Owned" Business which based on my personal experience they are #1 certainly not the Customer so stay away. Go with a cheaper product and if there is failure you are not as committed financially! Here was my response to Mr. Bowerman but never got one word back which was not surprising.
"I have no confidence in your product after my one and it remains to be seen negative experience. I went out of my way to give you and your company the opportunity to turn the awful and unexpected experience into a fading memory which would not dictate my future purchasing choices but you have failed terribly. I would have appreciated you not wasting anymore of my time truly when we spoke Dustin if you planned on using the "don't want to set a precedent rule." I sent you a lot of personal information so very form to say the least. No wonder I am in the minority and price is the primary focus because there is no loyalty in either direction so thank you Dustin for creating my present and future cynicism on how employee run businesses do business! The employees are first and foremost number one and the customer is expendable as well as the quality controls to produce a reliable and sound product.. Shameful but I cannot dictate your conscience, only you can. "Thank you" for stepping upon my kindness so now you are in the minority.”
Never heard back from Mr. Dustin Bowerman and it has been a month so if I had to do all over again I would have Run from Bradford White! Unfortunately this USA company does not inspire or contribute to confidence in their product nor customer service.

Purchased Bradford White 5years - 358 days ago, model m265r6ds-1ncww. Install and all repairs done by licensed plumbers. It's an electric water heater. Actually service life has been semi OK since we live in an area with very hard water and water treatment depends on regularly supplying expensive salt to conditioning unit. We are on well water. So I recognize it can cause some build issues over time.
However contractor quality unit installed when I built house in 1994 lasted 14 years and was only replaced due to heating unit and wife's desire for larger capacity heater. So six years for the Bradford White seems like a short life for heating element and thermostat set (comes as two t-stat set). When it went out 3 days ago I called plumber this morning after original calls went unanswered by first plumbing co. This plumber was able to arrive today and quickly found the issue. We'd had a short period of very hot water followed by the failure of the heating element so he suspected faulty t-stat set. $230 later it was fixed and I asked him about warranty from Bradford White. He basically told me I could pursue it but he felt they wouldn't pay anything and he didn't have time to take my failed parts to the wholesaler which is what BW's warranty policy requires. I emailed and phoned BW and was basically told the plumber would have to take the parts to the wholesaler. Well, he isn't going to take his $100/hr. time and truck to get me an adjustment for parts that cost about $50 and I don't blame him. I told the BW people that and got the old story about "well that's the policy".
After some further exchange they said I could call the plumber and find out who he got the BW parts from and then I could call BW back and let them know....At that point I cut the conversation off as it was clear they weren't going to do squat unless I jumped through all their hoops which are well designed to foil any attempt to get satisfaction under warranty.
In summary, they won because it simply wasn't worth my time to jump through all their obfuscating hoops to get a warranty claim paid. Of course they don't cover any of the expensive part...the labor of replacement. They act like it was my fault, their part went bad before the warranty expired so I should bear the cost of labor for replacement. What fricken planet do these people live on??
Based on comparison with original heater, I would rate the BW product below average and their warranty as the worst I've ever seen. The wholesaler for this area, Western States, gets such bad reviews I didn't ever bother to contact them as people with much worse problems are getting nowhere or worse screwed by BW's process. NEVER AGAIN BRADFORD WHITE! Just tell the truth that you will fight warranty claims with every ounce of effort you can muster. What goes around comes around. Below average product in my experience and non existent warranty even though they claim to have one.

I have installed and serviced Bradford White Water Heaters for over 32 Years. I find the posts from dissatisfied consumers to be offensive and unfounded. First of all, consumers are not supposed to be allowed to even purchase BW Water Heaters. That would be the fault of the local distributors for being the proverbial "**" in the marketplace (willing to sell to anyone, for a slightly larger price).
For the water heaters that failed prematurely, I have many questions that not one of the posts I read even addressed. What was the water pressure? More than the allowed 80psi maximum by residential plumbing code? Was there a PRV present on the main water line serving the home? (this creates a closed-loop system) Was there an expansion tank present on the installation of the water heater? (required if it is a closed-loop system) What is the water quality being delivered to the heater? (this will have profound impact on the life of ANY water heater and its anode rod) Was there a water softener installed in the home? (this will have profound impact on the life of ANY water heater and its anode rod) What was the incoming gas pressure? (can cause a premature failure of gas control valve)
What I have found servicing ALL makes of water heaters over all of these years is that THESE FACTORS MATTER! If you don't know how to check these things or don't have the tools or the inclination, stop installing water heaters. The reason the manufacturer wants to refer you to an actual plumber is because you need one to check all of these things PRIOR to installing a water heater and addressing any & ALL underlying issues you may or may not have.
As far as not "resetting" the warranty period?? Who does that? NO manufacturer does that! As a matter of fact, nobody in their right mind would even suggest that a manufacturer or any dealer would "reset" the warranty. A warranty that is indefinite is called a "Lifetime Warranty" and you pay for those, Upfront. No one wrecks their car and then buys the insurance to cover it, it's the other way around. As far as what Licensed Plumbers charge, I believe "some" charge too much. By that I mean, if you are not going to back up your sale & installation of a given product with the support your customers deserve, then you should be the cheapest plumber on the market.
As far as consumers buying a contractor grade product and wanting a professional to install it, I say to all licensed plumbers... "Walk away". These people are not your customers, nor do you want them as customers. Let that person get it installed themselves by a Handy Manny and then complain about the product because it "doesn't work right".
Consumers beware: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Stop trying to cut corners, the rounded edges can cut or hurt you too! "I do not prize the word "cheap". It is not a badge of honor... it is a symbol of despair. Cheap prices make for cheap goods; cheap goods make for cheap men; cheap men make for a cheap country." - William McKinley

The real issue is that technical support at Bradford White is non-existent. First, you can never get through to speak to someone. So, I used the option to email and received a reply telling me to contact a plumber. This seems to be an annual problem so is becoming expensive as you cannot buy just the sensor - you have to purchase the entire gas control assembly, which I find ridiculous, then you have the expense of getting someone to install it. This is obviously a manufacturing fault and Bradford White need to step up to the plate and resolve this issue. April 19th, 2012 we had a Bradford White water heater installed in our home. The plumber told us at that time the unit had a 7 year warranty. To our surprise, June 25th 2013 we got up to a flooded laundry room, water pouring out of the water heater. We tried calling the plumber who had installed the unit only to find his number disconnected and the company out of business. We called the plumber who we had used on another job recently and he came out and said the unit was defective but he was not a Bradford White contractor and could not replace the unit under warranty for us. He advised we contact Bradford White direct for the name of a contractor in our area.
What a nightmare! The list for our area had 9 contractors listed. The first 5 were more interested in repairing air conditioning units than taking on water heater warranty work. The four remaining were robbers, to put it politely. The first 2 would only do the work after hours, at time and a half rates, minimum of $600.00 to be charged. The 3rd company wanted $300.00 to come out and certify that the unit was defective. The 4th company said there would be a $159.00 trip charge, a $59.00 certification charge, then approximately $900.00 to install a replacement.
Needless to say, we were not happy. I tried contacting Bradford White directly to voice my displeasure and four days later got an email asking that I send them a picture of the unit. Not wanting to live without hot water and having to constantly clean up leaking water, we had already made our own arrangements to have the unit replaced by our plumber with a different brand. Bradford White did have a representative call us 5 days later to make sure our issues were resolved. We told him yes, they were resolved by no longer dealing with Bradford White! In a little over a year we have spent over $2200.00 out of pocket for the original installation and unit, then an additional $950.00 for a replacement. Our advice, Buyers Beware!!!!!

In October 2010, I had the small 5 gallon electric water heater under my kitchen sink replaced with a new Bradford White water heater. The work was done by professional plumbers, who have an excellent reputation. Over the next few months, I noticed that my electric bills were higher than normal and couldn't find the cause - now I suspect it was the water heater, since the bills went back down in May.
I went on a trip to Oregon to visit family in mid-March and was supposed to come back home to Montana, the end of May. Less than a month after I left, my water heater exploded! It was discovered April 19 and water to the house was immediately turned off, but not before flooding my kitchen with 76,800 gallons of water. Nobody touched anything, except to have the water to the house turned off and the breaker to the water heater/kitchen turned off to avoid fire and electrocution danger. I also had pictures taken. After a week or so of trying to get advice from attorneys and insurance, I contacted the plumbers, who came out immediately to assess the situation. I was instructed to touch nothing till the water heater people inspected. The water heater people (either Bradford White or distributor, Western States Sales) didn’t send someone till mid-June. Again, I was told to touch nothing till they finished their investigation. I argued with them, telling them that mold was growing and would continue to get worse if it wasn’t cleaned up immediately.
Due to kitchen damage, mold, no water etc., I was unable to return home the end of May as planned. My house was, and remains, unliveable. In June, Western States Sales sent me a Bradford White water heater claim form to fill out. In mid-July, Bradford White finally sent a shipping label to the plumbers, instructing them to pick up the water heater from my house and send to them for inspection. Bradford White finally finished their inspection of the water heater in mid-August and determined that it was a water pressure issue due to a surge in the water system. This is a lie. I have a letter from the town stating that there was no surge in the system. My other much older and larger water heater had no problems, the neighbors had no problems and the school that is a block away and monitors their pressure constantly showed no surge.
I had repeatedly tried to explain to everyone that I want to go home and that the mold continues to get worse every day. I kept telling them that the worse it gets, the longer it will take to clean up and the more it will cost. I have repeatedly explained how much of an inconvenience this has been and that I really want to return to my own home. For the most part, my emails and phone calls were ignored by Western States Sales. They have stalled and caused this to drag on unnecessarily. I don’t know if it was just them or if it was Bradford White telling them to stall it. I do know that there was something defective that caused the water heater to explode and that is definitely on Bradford White. This should have been handled/investigated back in May (should have taken no more than 2 weeks), and clean-up and repairs should have been completed for me to return home by the end of June, at the very latest.
I am a disabled widow on social security and as it stands now, I have a house that I am still making mortgage payments on, but cannot live in. It is a total loss, due to mold and structural problems from the water sitting in the crawlspace. I cannot sell the house; it will have to be torn down. I still have no place to live and can’t afford to rent a place, while I am still making mortgage and utility payments. If I quit making mortgage payments, it will ruin my credit and I won’t be able to find a decent place to rent.
Since it seemed clear to me that it was a defective product and still under warranty, I didn’t contact my homeowners insurance. I trusted/expected that it would be dealt with in a timely, professional manner. After all, Bradford White is a reputable company, right? Yeah, sure. In the end, when the investigation was finally finished, I contacted my homeowners insurance, only to be told that they won’t cover anything, because it wasn’t cleaned up immediately and that’s why the mold and structural damage occurred. I have kept a detailed log/journal of everything that happened, complete with letters, emails and notes from all phone calls, but it hasn’t done me a bit of good. The lawyers don’t seem to be interested, because there was no personal injury.
In my opinion, the fault for the whole thing lies first with Bradford White for the defective water heater, which exploded, did major damage to my kitchen and caused the water to enter my house. Secondly, with Western States Sales for dragging this out, their delays caused mold and structural problems. Lastly, in the end, Bradford White lied about the unit being defective. Back in May, the cost of repair and clean up would have been between $5,000 and $10,000. Here I am, nearly a year later, the house is a total loss, I cannot afford to fix it, have no insurance coverage to fix it, I am homeless and bouncing from one family member’s house to another’s, sleeping on the couch, no privacy or comfort and no life of my own. The upset and stress has affected my health and nearly ruined family relationships. The big companies have no concern for the problems they cause people, just to save a few bucks. I wish they could be held accountable for a change. They all acted like a water heater exploding was totally unheard of, it had never happened before that they knew, but yet there was a specific claim form for it - go figure. If I could give a negative 5 rating, I would!

Oct 2011, I paid a licensed contractor to purchase and install brand new Bradford White Gas Water Heater model# MZXR504T6FBN (manufacture date Oct. 2011). One week after install, the pilot light went out (I noticed during using hot water) and in assuming it was a fluke relit and went about my business. A week later, the pilot went out again, this time forcing me to contact contractor. Contractor (who was paid $95) came out and said because my heater is positioned near the back door, the draft is blowing the flame out and there is no real solution but to stop using backdoor, so we stopped, relit and went about our business. Few days later, same thing and this time I contacted Bradford White. Bradford White insisted I contact the contractor again because it didn't sound like an actual warranty issue. (BTW, I purchased a 10-year manufacturer's extended warranty.) After contractor came out, charged me an additional $95 and spent every bit of minute looking at it, he suggested I contact City due to possible gas leak. City concluded no gas leak.
Because Oct. 2011- Jan 2012 was seasonably warm in VA and our small home stays warm due to electric fireplaces, we didn't use heat at all, just hot water. I never contacted another contractor because I still had one-year labor warranty. Now, Oct. 2012 comes around and by now, we've relit the pilot at a minimum of once per week, max three times per week since Oct. of 2011. But this year, temperatures are much lower so we've turned the (Aqua Therm) heat pump on that's connected to hot water tank. In Oct. of this year me, my husband and two children are becoming increasingly fatigued, dizzy, and forgetful about things. Everyone goes to the doctor but the doctor doesn't order test. She dismisses it as overwork, not enough sleep; however, she did notice all of us (even my 10-year and 15-year old) has increased blood pressure, but she still dismisses anything serious.
The fatigue becomes worse. My kids stop getting up for school on time. Teacher complained of my children being confused and sleepy all the time. We all wake up with headaches, etc. I decided to go get a carbon monoxide detector and hooked it up just last week. I was awoken by the CO detector on Friday Dec. 7, 2012, with a PPM reading of 456! I called fire dept and they contacted City and City determined CO is coming from hot water tank. City red tagged unit. I contacted same contractor immediately and they came out some 5 hours later (although I told them I couldn't reenter the house until they checked it and city reinspect). Fire dept. commanded I open all windows (in which they helped me, bless their lovely hearts and even offered me their thick, warm fire jacket because I was outside with bedroom clothes on), and they provided me with oxygen because I couldn't breathe and was disoriented. I stayed outside for over 2 hours.
The contractors came out and said they didn't see anything wrong with unit (they visually inspected, they did nothing to test); however, they checked flue and said maybe it's too close to roof. They raised flue on roof but problem still persisted. Then the unbelievable happened. The contractor gave me a bill for $230 but not before bending the legs on the draft hood to cover the flue baffle opening to stop CO from coming into the house! Then he told us, "You're good to go. Now you can use it," and then left! The city people came out today without us calling just because they said they were worried about us and when they saw what he did, they said our house was a ticking time bomb because the unit couldn't breathe and combustion was building up! I contacted Bradford again and the rep told me there was nothing she could do, although I have a 10-year warranty and just bought it last year!
Then the city called the contractors and the contractors said, "We're not coming back out. Just sue us!" So now, my family does not have hot water, heat, and can't use the stove (haven't been able to since Friday) and no one is trying to help. I went back to the doctor and the doctor found CO in our bloodstream (more than normal) and our dog died though she was only 3 years old after vomiting, sleeping and being disoriented! Oh dear God, what do I do?

I replaced a Bradford White water heater that I had for 10 years with another of the same. The heater started leaking out of the hot water nipple after 4 years of service. I spoke to two people at Bradford. I was told the hot water anode tube and nipple were designed to sacrifice themselves to minerals in the water to preserve the tank. I agree with the concept of the anode wearing away, but the nipple it is attached to should never leak. I found out the nipple is made of galvanized steel, which is not a good metal for water use because it rusts very quickly. I asked why the nipple was not made out of brass, which is universally used for water pipes because it lasts forever. They just wanted to give me the boiler plate response they have for complaints when they disagree with the customer. They are not very customer friendly. This will be the last Bradford White heater I will ever use.

My company purchased a 100-gallon water heater (serial # EA10117161 D/N; model # D8OT180E3N) 3 years ago. Approximately 2 years ago it started leaking horribly. We took the unit back to whom we purchased locally (Hirsch pipe) and they did the right thing and started the warranty replacement process with a refund to us. This all transpired as promised. The problem occurred 5 months later when the replacement water heater starting leaking very badly.
We contacted Hirsch who told us there are no problems and started the process. We were upset due to the cost of the plumbing but were willing to live with it. We got a call that said they could do the warranty and we had to get in contact with the people they buy it from Signature in Corona. We did and we were told that only Bradford White could do the warranty as that this was a replacement on a warranty item.
No problems. We called Bradford White costumer service and we were told someone would come out and check the problem. To our utter dismay (since we had three bids to replace) their guy says that there is a pressure issue. When we pushed and presented the three qualified plumbers’ names, numbers and opinions that this is no way a challenge and they would be willing to all testify in court, we did get a different story. We were told that the unit isn’t leaking even though it is. We were told we were stupid and didn’t understand that the warranty is only for the tank, which is inside not outside, and if it leaks it has to be from the plumbing lines inside the unit and they do not cover it (although they covered the first one). They told us that since this is a replacement unit for a warranty item, they honored their warranty and that it was too bad for us.
When we brought to their attention that we were given a faulty unit, acknowledged by their distributor (signature and Hirsch pipe), we were told that those people don’t know what they are talking about. The technical department who all use the name Dave told us to have our plumber call them and they would walk them thru the procedure to open up the tank and tighten the top inner lines as they stated this was the problem 85 % of the time. At our expense we did this and this wasn’t the problem. We called back and were told that it was the lower lines and we need to have the plumber out again and have the tank opened remove all of the permanent foam insulation.
That means to un-roll the metal tank and scrap off the insulation to get to the faulty line. At this point we decided they must be trying to just make us spend money because no reasonable person would ask this. That is the equivalent of saying they warranty our motor from defects, and when you have the motor stop working they tell you how to break it down and extract one of the piston and how to replace it. We are frustrated and completely upset that all we want is that which is fair. Replace the leaking faulty unit. We purchased something that we didn’t receive! We have paid over $1800 in plumbing bills and still have a bad unit. We do not have the money to replace the unit ($4000 plus labor).

This is about Bradford White Water Heater M440T6FBN/serial number DF 9268843. This reply confirms receipt of the letter regarding your water heater(s) located at **. The water heater you have referenced is independently design certified and manufactured in compliance with all applicable ANSI safety standards. As this is a gas water heater and natural gas is being burned, carbon monoxide (CO) concerns are addressed under the design standard. The water heater design (when installed and maintained in accordance with the National Fuel Gas Code regulations and the written instructions that accompany the water heater) does not pose a risk of CO.
With your description that CO levels were measured within the living space, this likely indicated your venting system (not provided by Bradford White) as installed and maintained was not drafting/venting properly and may have been the root cause to detectors sounding an alarm. Insufficient draft/venting will also impact the amount of air allowed into a burner chamber. This in turn may compromise proper operations and the quality of combustion.
Relative to compensation: Model M440T6FBN with Serial AD4516651 was claimed by ** as a leaking water heater. The claim was received September 21, 2007 and credit was issued to ** on September 28, 2007 (credit issued equals the sale price of the water heater to **). Please note that no request for labor was submitted nor received. In addition, the water heater was not named as being related to an improper combustion situation. The replacement model M440T6FBN with serial DF9268843 I cannot comment on, as I have neither record of phone nor written records.
The comments by the gas company may be accurate pertaining to restricted airflow through the bottom of the water heater; however, their comment on the design is refuted by the independent certification and while it may represent the opinion of the individual, it is not an opinion supported by Bradford White. Please realize that the water heater does not produce nor is it shipped with dust and grime. These materials are likely a result of onsite variables.

Two Bradford White 50 gallon water heaters that supposedly had 6 year warranties developed leaks coming out the top in less than 4 and 1/2 years after put in service. Has there been a history of defective quality and/or premature failures of Bradford White water heaters installed by new house building contractors?
