I put pita bread in the toaster oven to warm up. Went into my garage next to my kitchen to get something out of our freezer. Heard a huge bang. Two of my three large dogs screamed while the third one went running with her tail between her legs into the garage with me. I ran into the house only to see two of my dogs covered in hot, broken tempered glass. I quickly brushed them off and saw that the toaster oven door literally exploded! The glass that wasn't on the dogs, was all over the floor and the toaster was still going. I unplugged it and was trying to see what happened.
The actual door blew to the other side of the kitchen and landed on the floor. Since I have dogs, I swept up the glass but took pictures of the toaster and what is left of the door. I plan on contacting Black & Decker tomorrow since they are closed now. This is not a heavily used toaster so I have no clue what happened. I'm glad the glass was tempered or I hate to think what would have happened to my dogs.

I put one corn tortilla in the toaster oven, for a few minutes on timer. I turned myself to wash my hands. When I looked over at the toaster oven, there was smoke coming out. I quickly ran over and unplugged it. It was on fire. Luckily I was there and I can unplug it out immediately. This is the second time that this issue happen with a different mode... last time was a piece of bread. In less than a minute this oven was on fire. Definitively this product is a fire hazard and should not be on the market. Black & Decker should decide something about this products.

I have had numerous Black and Decker products over the years and never had any serious problems, till tonight and I am very concerned. My stainless toaster oven (Model # CTO 4500S Type 2) door literally exploded violently. Thank God my son and I were in the next room. What a noise, startled us both badly. The entire glass door exploded while heating up dinner, sent glass across the kitchen, even on the counter top six feet away. It was on 300 for maybe 6 minutes when it exploded. Had we been in the kitchen when it exploded we both would have needed medical treatment. I am going to contact Black and Decker. Really not to sure I will purchase another of their toaster ovens. I consider this toaster oven a dangerous product that should be recalled. Don't have a receipt anymore but oven is about 8 months old. Have pics though.

I purchased a Black & Decker toaster oven, $40 - but on sale for $20, and now I understand why. I got it home and put HALF an English muffin inside. After about 5 minutes, I checked and saw no change to it, then turned the heat up. In about 1 minute, I smelled a horrific burnt metal smell and the outside was as hot as a cattle prod. Taking it back tomorrow. Black & Decker, never again!

Had the model B&D TRO480BS Countertop Oven for 2 weeks and on 10/8/14 used it to toast English Muffin and all of sudden the glass door exploded into pieces. Lucky my spouse was not near the toaster oven when this happened. I contacted B&D Customer Care. They would either send me an exact replacement or refund. Surprise there was no recall on the unit and that they still continue selling the same model. I took the refund but will not buy B&D.

The Temperature guide with clear water washed off. I called the co. and was told to send the plug to the oven and they would send me another oven which they did. It has worked OK until a couple days ago. I turned it on and heavy smoke was coming from the oven. I IMMEDIATELY UNPLUGGED THE OVEN so I thought to myself maybe there was a spot of grease to cause the smoke, so a COUPLE DAYS LATER, I plugged it up again - same problem. I'm very fortunate that my kitchen didn't catch on fire, so this oven is going to the DUMPSTER.... YOU WOULD THINK THAT BLACK & DECKER WOULD CORRECT THESE DANGEROUS PROBLEMS......

I bought a B&D toaster oven 3 days ago; used it for 5 min to warm a tortilla. After I turned it off, I saw there was fire inside the oven. Few minutes later, the glass door shattered and the door handle came off. There was glass all over my kitchen. Thankfully, I was home today. I am wondering what would have happened if I had used the machine and turned it off and left the house. Our house would have been on fire. I purchased the oven from Sears. I called them to complain... they didn't care. They asked me to bring it back and they will refund my money. Seeing the number of similar complaints on this site, I am wondering why the product is still on the market.

I bought Black & Decker Toast-R-Oven TD1313SDB at Target for a few weeks but didn't start to use it until a week ago. I made toasts for a few times. Today, I turned the oven to 400 degrees first time and it started to smoke. I was alarmed and turned it off. After things calmed down, I tried to toast and it started to smoke profusely. So I turned it off and unplugged ASAP. I noticed part of the lower heater tube turned black. The house smelled terrible like something burning. It probably would have caught fire if I didn't turned it off. Then I found this bulletin and just glad I didn't have to deal with a house fire.

On October 11, 2013, I was preparing Bruschetta in the countertop oven, TRO480BS, and had turned the oven on perhaps 2 or 3 minutes prior. I turned away and thank goodness was out of range when the glass door and the top metal part of the door blew off. I always unplug small appliances when not in use so this unit could not have overheated. I have never had this happen before and over my 46 years of marriage have had many countertop toasters and/or ovens. This was a recent gift and except for the shattered door, looks like a new unit. I even still have the box it came in.
I talked with the customer care unit today and they are sending a replacement but after reading all the negative reviews I wonder if there is a problem with B&D's quality control for this and several other of their units. The new unit is to be shipped next week. Rest assured, I will try it but will always step out of its explosive range when I turn it on and will not leave it unattended. I certainly hope I do not have a repeat performance with the replacement unit.

Poorly designed unit that should not have passed safety requirements. I used this unit to make toast and ended up returning it after one day. The unit has a manual steel rack. It does not slide out when the door is opened, You must PUT YOUR HAND IN THE HOT OVEN TO PULL OUT THE RACK (use a heavy oven mitt, really convenient). When the unit heated up, a heavy water condensation appeared inside the glass door (unit was new, clean & dry inside). The moisture in the white bread was the source. You could not see into the unit, of course. I opened the door to wipe down the inside glass: THE unit has NO AUTO SHUTOFF! You must turn the primitive mechanical timer knob to "off", cool down, and start over. Toast was okay on the top surface, but BURNED on the bottom (black & white stripes, like the bread was sitting on a barbecue grill with charcoals! I didn't give this unit a chance to burn me or ruin more toast, I returned it. I called the company with my complaint, and they didn't seem to give a hoot. We purchased our toaster oven (B&D Toast-R-Oven Model #480BS) on July 20, 2012. As of June 7, 2013, the toaster function will not turn off. The only way we can stop the toaster from working is by unplugging the oven from the wall. This is clearly a fire hazard since we have to be in the room when the toaster function is on, and closely monitor the toast to make sure it doesn't burn, and then unplug the oven. I will not be purchasing another product from Black and Decker. Unfortunately, this company used to be an excellent company, but it sure isn't anymore.

I have had my Black & Decker Countertop Convection Toaster Oven Model CTO6335S since 10/24/2012 and thought it was a great product. On 5/20/2013 at approximately 5:55 am, I was awakened by an unusual noise in my kitchen. When I got out of my bed to investigate the noise, I found that the glass door on my toaster oven had exploded and shattered into a million pieces. There wasn't anyone in my household awake at that time; therefore, the oven wasn't being used. The last time anyone had used it prior to this happening was at about 3:30 pm on 5/19/2013. Needless to say, I no longer think this is a great product! I have sent a complaint to the company. So far, I have not had any response. I used my toaster oven regularly for a few years and really liked it until one day it caught fire. I blamed myself, thinking that I had misjudged the time and/or temperature, so I cleaned it up and kept using it. However, the machine is clearly defective. It is now burning everything! I don't know why it went from working just fine to suddenly being a fire hazard. However, I clearly need to invest in a new toaster oven (from a different company!). This machine is dangerous. After reading the other reviews, apparently, I'm lucky it wasn't worse and no one was injured.

B&D/Applica line of toaster ovens is dangerous. My husband and I had one several years ago. It caught on fire, so we complained and took the free replacement. That one caught on fire and we took another free replacement. That one I left in the basement for a long time before being brave enough to try again. Guess what? That one caught on fire also. These were different models and each had the same problem. I gave up. These are dangerous and need to be recalled. The last model has a timer that won't turn off. It keeps ticking eerily. It's very difficult to control the settings.
What were we making in the toaster oven? Simple things that you would expect to be put in a toaster oven: pita bread, slice of leftover pizza on a tray, plain corn chips a tray. Never again! Flames were reaching the underside of the kitchen cupboards and the house filled with smoke and the odor was awful. Baby was screaming. I was shaking. The scare and fear that you feel when you realize your home could have burned down - with your family inside - is horrific.
We now use only the regular oven. It's not convenient, but it's safe. The worst case scenario is we burn the toast. Even if B&D/Applica were to give me a free replacement, I would be too scared to use it, and I can't think of giving it away to anyone I know or a charity, only to have someone else possibly injured.

How ironic! I had a house fire a year ago. I received a Black & Decker toaster oven as a house warming present. I've only used it about 10 times to make toast. I put pita bread in it yesterday and set the timer for 10 minutes. I went to the bathroom, and when I came out the damn thing was on fire. From all these posts, I don't think this is an isolated incident. When I called Black & Decker, all they offered was a replacement. I'm not sure I want to use the new unit. I think all of us who have experienced this should file a class action lawsuit. Someone will get hurt eventually, and they need to recall this piece of crap!

My roommate and I bought this from Target to serve plenty of functions, from toasting bread to re-heating pizza. First time I used it, I was cooking toast - I stepped away for two seconds and came back to the oven bellowing smoke coupled with the smell of burnt plastic. The glass front is permanently stained black, which is both cosmetically unappealing and makes the see-through glass non-functional. Obviously, I claim some of the responsibility, but what I'm trying to say is this oven gets hot - probably too hot for its own self to handle.
Anyways, we used the thing probably 3 times and it burnt out. You turn the timer and it just doesn't heat up. The nearest Target is a 20-minute drive, and as graduate school students, we just cut our losses. We only went to Target to furnish our new place when we moved in, and have no reason to otherwise go there. In summation, for about $30, we got to eat four pieces of toast and had to pull all the batteries out of our smoke alarms. I would really, really like to get my money back and would be more than happy to send this piece of junk back to Black and Decker. It's a relatively aesthetically pleasing little oven, but that's all it is.

We received this Toast-R-Oven as a Christmas gift on Christmas eve, 12/24/12. When we came home, we plugged it in and used it to make toast. The oven did not shut off and flames were coming out of the top. My daughter was screaming for her brother, who rushed in and put the fire out. It was a very close call. The flames were hitting the bottom of my kitchen cabinets, but thank God they are metal. The house was full of smoke and it smelled like plastic burning. The smoke alarms were also going off. Today, 1/19/13, my daughter-in-law was using it to cook chicken nuggets for my granddaughter and the oven started smoking. She unplugged it and all I could smell was the scent of plastic burning. I think this Black & Decker TRO480BS oven should be recalled as a fire hazard. At first, I thought to blame my 18-year-old for not being vigilant and accidentally turning the knob to 'Stay On', rather than time the food, and almost setting my kitchen on fire. However, less than a week later, I used it (after cleaning it out) and the same thing happened to me. I turned the knob to timer and it didn't shut off. After a few minutes, I realized the frozen waffle was shrunken and the oven was full of smoke. I've tried contacting the company via their email and phone but no one responds. However, now I have this new oven that has hardly been used sitting in my cupboard that I feel I need to just throw out as I am afraid to use it. If they were made to be able to take apart the guard around the oven to be able to clean it, it wouldn't be an issue. But there is no way to wash that part of the oven. Although there is next to nothing on it, it did start a fire once. So it would likely happen again. I'm typing this with only 8 fingers because the 2 others have second degree burns compliments of my Black and Decker Toaster Oven.
Today, I put a slice of bread in the toaster oven, set the timed toast function and went into the bathroom to turn on the shower. I came back in less than a minute to find flames shooting out of the oven! I ran over and reached back to unplug it and knocked it on the floor so it was away from my cabinets and less likely to catch something else on fire. That's when I burned my fingers.
The flames were getting bigger (I think the plastic pieces on the unit fueled the fire). I poured baking soda on the fire but it did nothing and the flames shot higher -I'd estimate 2-3 fee - and it was getting bigger. Meanwhile, I'm panicking about what to do then I remembered I had a fire extinguisher. In the adrenaline filled moment, I had completely forgotten, and thank God I did remember because it took the full can to put out the fire. I ended up with a molten metal mess, a white powder covered apartment -which will take me days to clean- 2 severely burned fingers, a visit to the ER, a lost day at work and a good case of the shakes from seeing a fire in my kitchen and having to put it out.
It is evident here that Black and Decker has a serious quality control and safety issue. I am thankful I'm okay but it could have been a complete nightmare if I hadn't been quick on my feet. Shame on you Black and Decker for selling a product you know is faulty and dangerous!

We have the Spacemaker Toaster oven purchased a few months ago. Like the rest of the complaints, the timer has been a particular bother, but we've been monitoring it. We're both really busy, and don't have time to fool with these things. This morning, I was making toast, which is a simple thing to do, and went in the other room to gather our mail. I became distracted, and suddenly realized that the kitchen was filling with smoke.
I rushed in to find my toast on fire, as well as the inside of the oven. I pulled the rack out, using a hot pad, and threw the thing with the toast, in the sink and doused it with water. Had I not been there, or gone upstairs for something, we could have had a real mess. It was made in China, free enterprise. This is criminal! Save yourself, and don't buy anything that has the Black and Decker name.

I bought a B&D toaster oven model CT04500S, Type 2 from the Macy's at Lake Forest Mall, Gaithersburg, MD on 1/6/12. On 1/7, we used the toaster once and the toasts turned out okay. Next time, on 1/9/12, we put some food to broil. After about 2 minutes, with a loud sound, the entire front glass panel exploded, showering the kitchen floor with small pieces of glass. The floor was strewn with glass pieces up to about 10ft of the cabinet on which the oven was set. It was sheer luck that no one was near it at the time of explosion, but it is exceedingly dangerous and the model should immediately be withdrawn from the market, before it hurts someone badly.
We took the unit to Macy's on 1/10/12. They tried to explain that it was not their responsibility and B&D should be contacted. They offered to refund the money, which we accepted.

I have a Black and Decker Toaster oven (model TRO480BS). I was dissatisfied, and frankly quite concerned until I read the other similar complaints. Now, I'm quite angry. We gave the unit more time than reasonable, for it to settle down and behave. It never toasted evenly and always! It wound up smoking up the kitchen. We never had the toaster setting higher than medium. This morning took the cake. It was very hot and emitted much smoke. I'm sure it was seconds away from flames. Fortunately, any time we used it, one of us was in the kitchen. As soon as it started smoking, we unplugged, and usually consumed an inferior product, or simply threw it out. This unit needs to be recalled. People using it are in serious danger.

We bought a Black & Decker Toaster Oven, Model # TRO 480BS, not too long ago. We have had two fires inside the oven in a couple of weeks. If it had not been for my daughter who had been walking through the kitchen at the time and noticed the bread going on fire, who knows what might have happened. She ran in to get me, and then I ran in and unplugged the oven while the flames were shooting from the toast. I found some baking soda and threw it inside the oven to put out the flames. My house was filled with smoke. We threw the oven outside.

This toaster oven (Toast-R-Oven TRO480BS) is extremely dangerous and starts fires. The dial gets "stuck" just before the timer is supposed to go off, which allows the heating element to stay on and incinerate food in the oven. When trying to lightly warm a tortilla, we turned the dial past the "10" mark and back again to the "light toast" mark. This is what the directions say one has to do - we checked after a close call and very burnt bread on a previous occasion. Five minutes after setting the toaster, I came into the kitchen (expecting it to have turned off). Black smoke was pouring out of the toaster. I unplugged it and opened the door, and large flames shot out. We were able to put out the fire, but it stained the cabinets and filled our home with smoke. If you have this toaster, monitor it very carefully. It seems the only way to ensure the heat actually shuts off is to do manually turn the dial to off when your food looks ready.

While toasting a single slice of bread today in our new Black and Decker toaster oven (model number - TRO480BS), I began to notice a burning smell. Thank God, I was on the kitchen phone and not far from the toaster oven or my cabinets would have gone up in flames. The entire interior of the oven was ablaze! I quickly turned off the unit and unplugged it as well, but the flames continued to burn. I grabbed a coffee mug from the countertop, filled it with water, opened the oven door, and doused the flames. I hate to think what might have happened had I been in another part of the house. This contraption is extremely dangerous and should be recalled. Black and Decker is just itching for a lawsuit from someone who happens to be unfortunate enough to lose their home to fire because of these toaster ovens.

This toaster oven has been horrible. When we first got it, we noticed that it burnt everything. There are only 5 minute increments on the oven, and we had to learn how to toast bread or bagels without burning them. This is a pain, but we are much more concerned about the safety of this oven. I was heating up pizza one day, and some cheese dripped and caught on fire! Fortunately, I was there and was able to blow it out and turn off the oven. At other times, I've seen smoke pouring out the sides, if it gets too hot. I now never leave the room with the oven going.
Tonight, we had it on for a while, and I noticed 30 minutes later that the cupboards were very hot. I did not check right after we used it, but they must have been extremely hot. A strip of paneling is coming off our cupboard. Isn't this designed to be an under the cabinet toaster oven? It should not cause these problems.
Why is this on the market? Why is it not being recalled? This is a very unsafe product. We have only used this as a toaster oven should be used. We have not been negligent. This is just a scary product and should not be allowed to be out on the market. I see other consumers feel the same.

This morning I touched the top of the oven after toasting an English muffin and burned the side of my finger. If this item is placed near a curtain or other items that can catch on fire such as in a crowded dorm room or student apartment the results could be catastrophic.

I have been in the appliance business for 40 years and the quality of these small appliances are basically junk. My wife and I purchased a TRO 490W Type 1 "Classic Line" toaster last year. We mainly used it to toast bread. Usually, we crank the bottom toaster dial to the black bread icon and the toaster begins ticking, as it should. It heats the bread and eventually goes off making a ding, as expected. But sometimes, I've wanted to then toast the bread a bit longer. So I turn the knob from its 9 o'clock off position up to the white bread icon at 10 o'clock. A few times the toaster then either hadn't started ticking, in which case I knew something was wrong, or it ticked, but wouldn't go off automatically. After a few minutes when I hadn't heard the ding, I guess my subconscious would kick in and alert me: "Hey something's wrong! It's been a few minutes now and we still haven't heard the final ding!". In the past, I always caught the error.
But today, I nearly burned down my apartment. I rotated the timer dial up to the white bread icon and even heard it start ticking. It sounded good. But then I got caught up with other things: My wife and five and a half month old daughter were heading out the door. When they were gone, I came back to the kitchen and noticed that the two pieces of toast were not only black but on fire! Like seriously on fire. I yanked the plug out of the electric socket, filled the nearest cup with water, opened the toaster door and doused the inside. The fire went out. I don't know if the toaster is damaged or not, much of it is blackened and I haven't tried to clean it yet. But it doesn't matter because I'm getting rid of this thing. Especially with a baby in the house, I am not taking a chance on using this thing further. I plan to call the company and ask for my money back.
By the way, there was enough smoke that my downstairs neighbor came upstairs, knocked on my door and asked if everything was okay. Incidentally, my wife and I inherited a toaster from a great aunt many years ago. I don't remember who the manufacturer was, but the thing was simple, simple, simple. It worked for decades, did what it was supposed to do and never caught on fire. We only got rid of it because the cord near the plug eventually frayed. I could have repaired it, but my wife wanted something that looked newer anyway. It may be a cliche, but it's true: They don't make them like they used to.

On 12/7/09, I bought a new B&D Spacemaker Toaster Oven (model TROS1500 Type 1). While making some toast on 1/8/10, it started to smoke. I opened the door, and while looking for something to remove the toast with, it caught fire. I couldn't blow it out. I ended up throwing a cup of coffee on it to put it out.
Several things caused this. The oven does not have a setting for toasting. There is a rotary timer which is not accurate nor does it stay set. So you must watch the toast. The toaster has also remained on after the timer went off. The next problem is that the unit does not turn off when the door is opened. After opening the door, you must turn the timer off or pull the plug.
I have owned 2 B&D toaster ovens for about 18 years and never had this problem. When the door opened, they turned off. When you use a normal toaster, when it is popped up, it turns off. Had this unit turned off when the door was opened, the toast probably would not have caught fire. The toaster was blackened and discolored.
Since I need to use coffee to put the fire out, it has not been plugged back in. The shelf and microwave above the toaster also have smoke damage. The ceiling probably needs to be painted because of the amount of smoke in the house.

I bought this oven toaster because it was on sale at Macy’s which included a rebate of $10.00 that I never received. Anyway, this product should be recalled and the consumer should be given a refund. This oven toaster is a fire hazard as heating mechanism, and the timer is faulty. As a result, unless you are standing in front of it watching your bread toast, it can easily overheat and catch on fire. The sides of the oven become incredibly hot within minutes, and I have gotten burned on more than one occasion by an accidental touch.
The timer on the unit does not function as it should; i.e., the unit does not turn off when the bread is done toasting or more often than not, burnt. Moreover, the oven continues to heat even after you open the glass door and have turned the dial to the off position. My toaster overheated three times and almost blew up. The only way to know that it is turned off is to unplug the electrical cord. And who remembers to do that each and every time they want to toast a piece of bread. I have been burned twice from accidentally touching the overheated side panels. My toaster continued to heat even after it was turned off and caught on fire because it overheated. It nearly started a fire in my kitchen.

The knob that you need to turn the oven off does not have a stop position and if you go just a fraction beyond the line, the oven continues to cook! The toast burst into flames and as luck would have it, my kitchen door was open and my husband was able to carry the flaming oven to our backyard where we extinguished the fire. If we had left the kitchen for any period of time, I am not sure that we would have had such a happy ending as the flames were very intense and the kitchen filled with black smoke. The design should definitely be changed to include an off button that has a specific stop.

My first toaster oven (TR0700S), after 11.5 months, made the circuit breaker turn off/blow up when set to 'oven' and neither the oven nor the convection fan would work. Put a complaint to fox-international.com and they replaced the unit with another of the same. Six months later, the oven stopped working, so did the convection button.

We purchased this product (Black & Decker TRO620 toaster oven) new to replace a well-served older model a few months ago. Right away, it felt poorly designed and very hot just a few minutes into toasting toast and was not sealed tight at the top. Not only did it not toast bread well or evenly, the picture showed some big roast in the unit. That is so unlikely due to so many limitations it has from lack of adjustable rack to the simple fact that it is not that big inside. The final and most concerning is the fire we had inside tonight, when we were just toasting some tiny pine nuts laying flat in the provided pan. It flared up so fast and created such heat that a fire broke out and thick black smoke that smelled of burned plastic was in every fiber of our house. This was not due to a build-up of grease, as the unit has barely been used. I never wrote a review before on a website but felt I needed to warn others.

This toaster oven just stopped working after about six months of use. I tried to return it but this model has been replaced with different numbers so the store says it is not theirs (and I can't find receipt). It has a one-year warranty but what good is it? The stores that deal with Black & Decker should take it back and replace it with another and deal with the company for its faulty product.

I have always bought B&D under counter toaster ovens. The one I bought this year however was downright scary. I have burned more bread in it than I have served. Tonight, I put Tostada Shells (2) in it on "bake" and they caught fire. Charred the oven, smoke damage above the oven and the plastic on the outside of the microwave melted.

I bought one 3 years ago because that's the only brand that had an under-the-cabinet mount to free up space on the counter top. After a while, it stopped broiling, burned food, and would barely toast. I knew its death was imminent, so I bought another one a few months ago. It was probably the last remaining one in the USA that was under-the-cabinet mountable. Finally, my first toaster oven died. It lasted 3 years. I slid the new oven into the under-the-cabinet-mount and plugged in the unit. While a bagel was toasting, I was attaching the rubber feet to the bottom of the unit. Then, the oven EXPLODED. There was a loud pop, the door flung open, and white powder went everywhere. I unplugged it. I called the company the next morning, and they said they'd send a new one. In two weeks it arrived. I haven't used it. I will dispose of it and buy another brand.

I didn't discover till 3 hours later that unit was till on dark toast when I could smell hot smells in the kitchen. I tested the timer after that and it seemed to be working ok.
No damages but unit sits on top of a stainless bread box and about 2 inches under a cabinet. The cabinet was warm and I doubt that any combustion would have occured but it is discomforting to have this happen.

Major loud noise, followed by smoke coming from the right hand end of the device. No longer could move the ON lever at all. dismantled I found that the device switch off mechanism had failed, and the solenoid coil was fused to the central rod of the solenoid. We had it for many years and I guess it was just it's time. However, the MECHANISM OF FAILURE is alarming, and could have easily started a fire.
Unit is destroyed, but no other damage.

I bought a B&D toaster oven a little over a year ago, to replace one that had served faithfully for years but finally given out. I loved that old oven and it performed great. With this new one, however, I had to return it within six months because the top heating elements quit working. Now about eight months after getting the replacement, the top heating elements have failed again. Obviously this is not a quality appliance, and I don't even want another B&D. I'll go buy another brand.
Since B&D won't refund me the purchase price, I am out the cost of the appliance (about $40) and the aggravation.

I am on my way to return the second Black&Decker Toast-R-Oven Countertop Oven/Broiler. When this appliance is turned on--either on the toaster, bake or broil setting--smoke pours from the back of the unit and smells like an electrical fire. Thank goodness I was near by in both cases to immediately unplug the unit.
While I suffered no damage, except the frustration of returning the item twice, I want to warn other consumers to avoid purchasing this product. It should be recalled and pulled from the shelves. Clearly, there are safety issues with this small appliance.

I originally purchased a B&D 651 counter top oven for my wife as a coming home present after her hospitalization. The unit ran for almost 3 months before a switch failed. Called B&D and did the cut off the cord routine and got a replacement half the size of the original. Complained and got a second replacement, also much smaller, and complained again to finally receive a new 651. It lasted just over 2 months before failing for the same reason as #1. Called it in, did the power cord routine and got #3. It lasted just over 6 months before starting the same problem.
Every unit failed because of faulty switches in the temperature control portion of the unit. I am an electronics tech and decided to dis-assemble one of the failed switches to see if it could be repaired. (Can't find the part any where.) These units are trash as far as their switches are concerned. Black and Decker should get out of the business or find someone who can supply parts built to better specs.
This has cost me considerable time and frustration dealing with a company that doesn't even take care of their own customer service, and I am out the cost of a piece of kitchen equipment that should have lasted for years. No fires or near fires, but that (in my opinion) is only because the power portion of the switch failed before the bi-metal thermostat could.

My wife was warming up taco shells at 350 degrees for 5 mins., when the shells caught fire. We believe that the temp of the oven rose much higher than the 350 degrees it was set at. We followed the cooking instructions that came on the package. Luckily the smoke detector went off. My wife ran to the kitchen and saw the oven on fire. She grabbed the unit and threw it outside the door into the snow. This was a very close call and could have been devastating to our family. The oven was a Black and Decker toaster oven purchased only 9 months ago. We will never again purchase another toaster oven. I will never purchase any product made by B&D!

I bought an InfraWave speed cooking countertop oven with the Black and Decker name, but actually made by Apllica. It was advertised on TV. Used oven for about 3 weeks without problem. I opened the oven door to place the cooking pans inside and the oven came on and started to heat. This type of oven makes very little noise when on, but the heating lights are visible if looking at the oven. I pushed the power button and the stop/start button to turn it off, but the oven would not turn off.
I opened the door and it still kept heating. The oven uses an infrawave to cook and is suppose to turn off (like a microwave) when the door is opened. There was no time limit on the display indicating the cooking time limit and it possibly could have continued heating until it caught fire. The only wave to turn off the oven was to unplug it from the outlet. When I plugged it back in later, it continued to heat even though I did not push the power or stop/start buttons. The top of the oven got hot so I know it was heating. I unplugged and removed from use.
I feel sure that it would have caused a kitchen fire had I not noticed that it came on by itself, and unplugged it.

The toaster is ruined of course but my concern is that if it were a child or an elderly person and the flames had leaped a little more than they did, someone could be seriously burned or electricuted. I contactted Black and Decker not for a refund or replacement because the warranty was up but to let them knoe it might not be an isolated event. I thought they might want me to return the toaster so they could test it for defects.

Last year I bought a Toaster Oven by Black and Decker. The first time I used it, it burned right through the top turning the oven black. I called them and they shipped me a new oven but different model. About three weeks ago I put in a piece of bread to toast it, how long does that take? 30 seconds. Well my Toaster oven actually exploded, shattering glass all over and the door blew right off.
Had I been taking the bread out at that moment, I would have been killed or seriously injured. I have since tried to reach them by phone and I have sent a dozen e-mails but they refuse to answer me. They finally sent me a check for $40 to cover the cost of the oven but in the meantime I had to call in an electrician to make sure it wasn't my wiring. It wasn't.
