A little over a year of owning a Panasonic microwave I started experiencing the same problems with the door latch that others have mentioned (having to slam door and/or bang on it to get the microwave to work). The problem is that the latch / safety switch assembly inside the oven is mounted to a thin piece of sheet metal. Over time the sheet metal bends slightly, causing it to be misaligned with the latches on the door. You will need to remove the cover of the microwave. The screws on the back require a special tool, but I used pliers to turn them out. Once the cover is removed you can see the latch/switch mechanism. Simply use your pliers to bend the sheet metal that the mechanism is mounted to back towards the center of the oven. If you're really motivated you can add a brace to stop the problem from happening again. Replace the cover and VOILA!, door latches like new!

SN661S - If anybody's thinking about buying a Panasonic microwave or any product from them BEWARE. Our microwave needed one repair under warranty and then needed the same repair 6 months later when it was out of warranty. The repair place wouldn't fix it and Panasonic won't replace. After 4 hrs on the phone over a 1 month period and getting a form from the repair company saying they won't fix the same repair twice, I finally gave up after an hour on the phone today. I'll never buy another Panasonic product as long as I live.

Panasonic microwave NN-SN797S - We bought it at Costco after having returned the first one of its kind because the door was so incredibly hard to close. This one was slightly better but still very hard closing. The door interlock is on such flimsy metal that it bends when closing the door. The top latch in the door eventually snapped and the microwave stopped working. It's obviously a manufacturing defect, and from what I've read here it is a common one for panasonic. We will NEVER buy another panasonic anything.

I purchased the Panasonic NN-SN960S in August 2012. The sticker on the door states it was manufactured in May of 2012. Other than having to slam the door to get it to shut I haven't had any problems until today. Now when I open the door the turntable keeps running. I am about 3 hours from the nearest large city.

As many of the other comments, we had bought a Panasonic due to past experience (and I mean over 20 yrs ago), and had the same issue with having to slam the door 10 times to make it run. How annoying!!! Tonight, 3 yrs to the day, it finally won't work at all. Consumerism at work. We will NOT be buying another Panasonic "anything". This is the second Panasonic microwave to kick the bucket within a 3-yr span. The last microwave's interior bubbled and rusted. What happened to the days when household appliances lasted at least 10 yrs??? When my husband and I were first married we owned a microwave that was already 20 yrs old, a washer and dryer that was 25 yrs old and a refrigerator that was 15 yrs old. They all lasted until our son was born 2 yrs later. Oh, the good ol' days. Panasonic, regain your integrity!!!!!

The pros: large area for cooking, even cooking, lots of bells and whistles, fast defrost. Overall, I loved this microwave. My complain news. After about 6 months of use, we began having problems with the door. It was not latching properly. My husband was able to rectify that for several months by using a lubricant on it. But now, left down a year later, we are no longer able to use the microwave and the door has become completely non-functional. We must now replace the whole microwave.

We have enjoyed the operation of our microwave, but slamming the door latch to get it to run is just UNACCEPTABLE. We have to slam it so hard, the unit moves back on the shelf every time. Guests are totally befuddled by it and this gives Panasonic a very bad name every time we have to explain what a poor job the engineers did. LOST SALES for Panasonic... which would make it worth their while to fix this for current customers or give us a huge discount on another item. Despite the warranty running out, I truly believe that this should be a recall by Panasonic.

I purchased the Panasonic Genus Microwave a few years ago. It had been a good microwave, no door problems, or anything like what I've read about till about a week ago. I fell asleep on my couch and woke up to what sounded like a gun going off on my patio. The sound was extremely loud and it frightened me so badly that I called the local police department and complained. Of course the police only rode by my home and didn't even bother to check to see if anyone was there with a gun (Normal for where we live). I didn't get any sleep the rest of the night. Two nights later the same thing happened. I didn't know where the sound came from but it was a really loud sound like a gun going off. I began to try to eliminate what the sound was not and finally came to the conclusion that it must be the microwave, so I unplugged it. I didn't hear any gun going off that night so it must have been the microwave. So the next day the microwave was plugged back in and immediately I saw an arch of electricity blast within the microwave itself. I'm lucky to be alive. I still have the microwave and may call an attorney. This is a dangerous device and if it is not made correctly and within strict guidelines, someone's life could be in danger by shock or their home burning down. Don't buy a Panasonic Microwave... just don't.

Bought Panasonic Microwave in 2002, It stopped working Nov 2013. It worked perfectly all those years, so I purchased another Panasonic, like the old one except this one is the new model. It has a dial instead of buttons to set the cook time which for me is a good improvement. Have had it eleven months and then suddenly started to have a problem getting it to work. When I press the start button only the timer would rapidly count down. I found out from reviews on this site, that slamming the door might make it work. I did not slam the door but instead pushed on the middle of the door, rather than the lower right hand corner. Now by closing it this way it starts every time. I Have less than a month left on the warranty so I plan on having it looked at since it still goes berserk when I close the door from the right corner. I like this microwave but I would suggest that they make the door easier to close and make so that it make less noise when shut.

In Jan 2013, we purchased the NN-H965BF microwave from Best Buy to replace the previous Panasonic microwave that had lasted over 16 years. The longevity and similar controls operation was the logic behind our purchase. We try to stick with what works. HOWEVER -- the hard closing door was immediately obvious. We went back to the store and felt the door on a display unit and it was the same way so we just figured that was how it was designed and as long as it seemed to function OK just leave well enough alone. Fooled us -- Did not last 1-1/2 years before it really started acting up and having to slam the door to get it to run, then not at all -- Call to Best Buy and Panasonic only got the unconcerned response -- it's out of warranty and you must take it to an "Authorized" service center.
If they are not paying for the repairs then I get to take it to whomever I want -- Tear down revealed upper door hook cracked (but still looked OK) with interlock switch pressure causing the hook to move up away from the switch lever and failing to activate the switch - second issue was the massive pressure required to close the door was bending the switch mounting bracket letting the assembly get out of alignment -- Panasonic engineering dept should get fired over this one seeing as it appears to be a systemic problem with their newer units. Parts were less than $20 but as this was an obvious conspiracy to increase profit margins instead of Quality, this will be my last Panasonic.

Panasonic Microwave nnst681s - We bought this unit as part of our home appliance package exactly 2 years ago (guess what, the warranty is 2 years!). Today it began to operate (fan, turntable) with the door open!! Have always kept it clean and had no prior problems. Am not sure if this is dangerous when being operated now. Do not want to fix due to potential hazard problems when repairing such a problematic device, even though I am an engineer. Not worth the hassle and health issues, will just go out and buy another (NOT PANASONIC) device.

Panasonic NSD277 Over range microwave - This was a replacement of a similar Genius oven that lasted 12 years. The electrical cord on the new one was near the front instead of the rear as per the old unit. The template instruction was to measured 9.25 inches from the rear and then drill a 2 inch diameter hole. Factory made cupboards that this appliance attaches to are only 10 inches wide, thus the hole would have been outside of the cupboard shelf which would have really made our day. If you set the electrical wire hole back, as you have to, then the electric cord will not match the hole and catches the bottom shelf. Then oven cannot be properly secured to the shelf with the two mounting screws. Require a re-design of the electrical service wire or make sure the cupboard shelf is at least 13" wide.

We have to put things on revolving plates. After 2 weeks it completely stopped working. We don't have any warranty, so I guess I will not buy Panasonic again. I bought this microwave about 4 years ago at a Walmart. I remember declining the extended warranty on it at time of purchase. Anyway just started having the same door latch problem everyone else had. When you shut the door the light stays on, you slam the door and it goes off, but when you put the cook time in and press start, nothing happens. Slam the door again and it works. I was just going to put it on the curb for garbage pickup, however, I decided to take it apart and see what the problem was.
After removing the impossible screws on the case, I discovered that the latch mechanism, which is mounted to a very weak piece of metal, was bent over which caused all the problems. I bent it back and put a piece of metal wire from the bottom screw to a machined hole that is above the latch mechanism to give it additional support. It works so far. Seems like the issue is a poor design flaw with the mount like the previous posts have written. Not mad, just glad I didn't throw it away.

I bought a refurbished Panasonic microwave oven, only had it for a year. The microwave door was always been hard to shut, didn't think much of it until I had to start slamming the door like 10 times to get it to work. Called Panasonic, the only thing they did was give me a phone number to a repair service who said it was cheaper to just buy a new one. So I tried to fix it myself, bent in the prongs that hold door latch, it worked a little better, put it together again and it didn't work again. Took it apart again and found that the latch had been pushed out again by the door hinge that connects to the latch. By looking at the door latch you can tell it's a poor design, only two screws holding the latch and two metal prongs that have a tendency to bend when you shut the microwave door. Very cheap set up.

Purchased about 3 years ago. Turn table had paint worn off, paint bubbled, rust even in the back of the microwave oven. Had to send it back. They came back with a report of that it was not more than 5mW of leakage. That's the amount of the government's guidelines for microwave ovens. They failed to address the rust problem. This IS still an open case. In these three years I have had breast cancer, and a few knee and hip problems/replacements. I am not saying that the use of the microwave is the cause of my health issues, just a big red flag has flown over all of this.

After 2 years the push button to open the door was broken (clips on the inside). Had to get a replacement for $5 + $20 shipping. Last week, while reheating food for 4 minutes, the whole microwave just stopped (No power). A repairman ($80) came to the home and told me that there was a short in the wiring and that because there was no fuse installed in the oven, the short traveled through the circuit board, thus enabling the unit dead! He could not understand why no fuse was installed as there was a spot for it in the control area. He also mentioned to me, that I should look for an oven with a pull handle on its door as it was much better than the push button types, which if pushed too hard, it could damage the circuit board behind the control panel. Needless to say, Panasonic brands have been expensive to maintain and I will be looking forward to another brand.

After 14 months of ownership the plastic key that latches the door of our Panasonic NN-SD372S failed for no apparent reason. On opening the unit the lower plastic arm simply fell off. A call to Panasonic gave no joy. Despite them admitting that the part had been a problem they would not send out a replacement and went so far as to tell me that if I installed it the warranty would be voided....this just after they had just told me it was already out of warranty. I can see that the part costs $2 at a number of internet sites but isn't normally stocked. Of course shipping runs more than $10 for the item so that adds indignity to the whole equation as well. If Panasonic would just man up and send me the part I'd be a satisfied customer. As it is I'll never make another purchase from, not recommend one from Panasonic again.

After months of enduring erratic operation due to the door latch issue, I finally opened up our unit (I'm qualified) and found that the door latch issue is due to an engineering issue. The door latch/switch assembly is mounted on a flange of the chassis sheet metal. The sheet metal is too thin and flexes away from the door catches when the door is closed. One of the switches tends to remain open when this happens.
I fixed the problem by removing the latch assembly and applied adhesive to the face of the assembly. After remounting the assembly, I trimmed craft sticks and installed them to brace the assembly to prevent it from flexing away from the door catches. It has worked reliably ever since.

As I read all the comments/reviews out loud, my husband is trying to fix the door on our Panasonic Inverter Microwave. We have the same problem as most consumers... the door latch. It won't engage and other times the microwave continues to run when the door is open. It's two years old. My brother and his wife had the other problem... they had a ghost! The microwave would turn on itself. My sister-in-law went online to discover what everyone else seems to know now. This is a dangerous product. Fearing their house would burn down when they weren't home, she called Sears (the place of purchase) to express her concerns. Sears told her to pick out any microwave she wanted and they would cover the cost. Kudos to Sears! After reviewing all the comments, I have to wonder what it will take before there is a recall on this very dangerous appliance. As I finish this comment, my husband has given up his efforts. I bought a Panasonic Inverter Microwave because I've always found any Panasonic brand to be high quality. First off this microwave was so complex it's not good for much beyond warming stuff up unless you want to run to the instruction manual every time you do more. Still overall I was satisfied until a couple of days ago. Almost every time you open the door it begins running without ever being turned on. My son joked it was like a ghost was haunting it & playing with us. I'm extremely disappointed. I complained to saferproducts.gov after the door won't hold tight shut, yet sticks when closed. This is due to poor quality plastic latch wearing down. My previous oven (same model) stopped working after 1 month, this one lasted 3.5 years, but has excessive microwave leakage according to a rented meter. If I need to use it, I press the door-open button fast with my thumb. When it sticks, I close it fully and repeat. Earlier, when I had tried to pull it open, I heard a slight buzzing while pulling. I fear that was the Magnetron running (although oven was not set to cook), so I shut it quick.

It started doing this a couple of months ago but infrequently, now it does it numerous times a day. I sent an email to Panasonic's customer service and was told to call for an authorized service center for repair. After reading all the complaints on here I gather that is a waste of time but I'm curious to see what they will say. My son bought the same microwave on my recommendation and his is having the same problem, his also has a part, which I thought was metal, that fell off when the microwave was being cleaned. First, I want to respond to posters regarding Wi-Fi. Any microwave will interfere with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi if the location of the Wi-Fi router and the microwave and your computer are in bad locations. Try relocating your router or computer or Microwave so it won't interfere. This is common knowledge. But the real problem with the Panasonic microwaves is like Earle of Huntsville, AL said. After about 6 months to a year, the flimsy metal bracket starts flexing when the door is closed, causing the door latches to not latch correctly, resulting in the micro switches to not make up correctly. You'll notice this when you have to start slamming the door hard to make it work.
Unfortunately we had misplaced the receipt; otherwise, we would have returned to store. So somewhat similar to Earle of Huntsville, AL... I made a little wooden brace for mine which cured the problem. But it's a cheap design for a microwave door latch switch and it's almost like they designed it for failure. You'd think that it would be non-productive to build junk that will just be returned. How could they possibly be making any money on this?
Reviewed Feb. 19, 2014
All similar models of Panasonic microwaves, except the commercial models, seem to share a common problem. Like most microwaves, they have three micro switches, mounted in a holder. And when the door is closed, the switches are depressed and allow the oven to function. The problem is that, in design, it was decided to anchor the switch holder to the thin sheet metal, bent into a right angle, which forms the interior door surround. This is so thin that metal fatigue sets in after a year or two, and it will no longer hold the switch holder in a position so the micro switches can be depressed. Instead, the holding metal simply bends back and the oven won't work.
Usually, this is preceded by an interval when slamming the door works. I took a couple of angle brackets, almost flattened them in a vice. And took out the upper and lower screws anchoring the switch holder and placed the heavier metal underneath, bracing the thin metal to which the holder was screwed. It works perfectly now, but I certainly could not recommend it as it comes from the factory with a part destined to break eventually.

I purchase the Panasonic Genius Model NNT945SF Microwave a little over a year ago. Within 6 months, the door would not shut without slamming it. I noticed that the Microwave interfered with my WiFi about this time. At approximately 1 year, the digital screen went blank. I went to Panasonic's website and found the local authorized repair shop: Electronic Specialists, 300 Commercial Dr., Fairfield, OH, 45014. The proprietor, John Raymer, diagnosed the problem by phone and said it was the door latch causing the screen to stop working. For $45 he said he would fix the microwave. I asked if the door was not the problem, what then? He said, for $45 he would fix the microwave, no matter what the problem was, and has a 3-month warranty on repairs.
I met him at his shop on 11/23/13, which has no set times to be open, and delivered my microwave. I picked it up on 11/26/13, again I had to schedule a meeting by phone. The microwave door was hard to close. It no longer interfered with WiFi. The repair lasted about a week before the screen started going blank again. I scheduled a meeting and returned it. He apologized and said it was mistakenly sent out before being repaired. I was to meet him on 12/6/13 but he never returned calls to confirm a meeting. He didn't return any calls until I called Panasonic directly. Finally he called and said it was repaired.
My wife picked it up on 12/16/13. Five days later the screen went blank again. It happened intermittently for a while. It also interferes with WiFi again. But Electronic Specialists no longer answers my call. I again contacted Panasonic USA by phone. I have had to contact them repeatedly and repeat the same approximately 20 times. They forward the information UP TO A MANAGER, who doesn't call back. I finally spoke to Basil. Panasonic denies any responsibility, since it is not a warranty repair. I said they are responsible because I would NEVER have gone to Electronic Specialists if their web-site hadn't directed me there, as their local authorized repair center.
Basil told me my microwave was repaired. He did give me an address to MAIL a request for assistance to Panasonic USA (which I only assume is their next line of misdirection and run-a-round). Since the time I spoke to Basil, microwave has completely quit working. It is 1/9/14 and still only about 1 and 1/2 months into my THREE-MONTH WARRANTY from Electronic Specialists. Of that time, the Microwave only worked correctly about 8-10 days. I also wonder if I have been exposed to microwave radiation leaking out of the door of this unit for about 6 months.

The repair shop requested some sort of paperwork from Panasonic in order for them to do the work and each time we called Panasonic, we were told that everything would be taken care of ASAP, paperwork would be send immediately, phone calls would be returned to us and there was no follow thru. We did speak with supervisors and had the same poor service. Think twice before purchasing a Panasonic microwave. We see that many customers have had problems with the door latches - we are waiting for that problem to start in which case ours is going right in the trash. We are happy to finally have ours repaired but we don't want others to have this very frustrating experience.

I have had the Genius 1250 Microwave for many years and had been happy with its performance. It cooks normally and the turntable stops rotating and the light goes out at the end of cooking. However, when you open the door, the light goes on and the turntable starts rotating again even though the microwave is not cooking. I suspect it is a bad door switch or failed mounting of a door switch. I have heard of this problem but don't know how common this failure is. It is out of warranty.

I purchased a Panasonic microwave NN-SD698S fifteen months ago. It stopped working with an H98 error. I E-mailed Panasonic. They replied to contact the authorized service. The service person said it would be a $225 job. I called panasonic. They said "sorry, you are out of warranty." I asked for a supervisor. They put me on a lengthy hold three times, then said all supervisors were busy, they would call back within 48 hours. I insisted on waiting. A supervisor suddenly came in two minutes. The suggestion was to buy a new one. This is legal stickup! How could the authorities allow companies to violate consumers like this, especially when so many have had similar issues with Panasonic microwaves, is beyond me. This affects our society, because the ripple affect is that a ripped off person rips off another person to compensate, and this transcends into a degraded society.

We bought this microwave at a Sam's club in July of 2011. It started giving us trouble with the door switch in January of 2012. I contacted Panasonic customer service. I received the "Sorry sir, but your warranty is expired" excuse. I lost the receipt so I couldn't take it back to Sam's. The problem is not so much the switches, but the poor design that Panasonic has. They have the entire switch assembly screwed to a flimsy piece of sheet metal which buckles under the stress of the door closing. This makes it where the switches never get tripped to complete the circuit for proper function. So we still have this piece of junk microwave and hope to replace it in the near future. Definitely not with a Panasonic, maybe a Kenmore. The one we had before this piece of crap lasted 10+ years.

The problem gets worse each day and we are now concerned as to if this leak will or can become a health issue.

I received a Panasonic Microwave Model NN SN 968B as a gift for Christmas 2012. I sent in the warranty card on 1-4-13. Aug. 10, less than 8 months later, the door latch broke leaving the microwave inoperable. I called the 800 number and was told, "Sorry, you have to pay for the repairs," because I didn't have the receipt. I explained, "It's a gift," and I did send in their warranty card with all the info on it. I was told, "That's not good enough." Well I don't understand why then do we send those cards back if they won't honor them. I don't make a practice (and I really don't think anyone does) of asking for all my receipts for gifts I get. I have sent Panasonic an E-Mail to their Contact Us line and am waiting for an answer. I have read the reviews and it seems Panasonic has a door latch problem but doesn't want to address it. Any help would be appreciated. I have a perfectly good microwave that won't work because the door won't close. I feel I should not have to pay to get this fixed.

After contacting Panasonic again in early August of 2013, a replacement microwave was delivered to my home around mid of August 2013. It is a refurbished microwave and an exact same model replacement. As of today, September 9, 2013, the replacement microwave has been working flawlessly. I hope it will stay that way for a while. Thanks Panasonic for the resolution, even though it took months and cost me a lot of time off from work and money as well. Most importantly, thanks to Consumer Affairs for the impact and effect that it has in this resolution.

I contacted Panasonic about 4 times since posting this complaint. Agent after agent said that this issue "is now escalated to a higher individual" and that I will get a call within 24-48 hrs. A return call never happened. At this point, I really believe that Panasonic is giving me a runaround and they are not standing behind their products at all. I'll give them another week before I post my bad experience with Panasonic at other online appliance forums in hope of informing others to stay away from Panasonic products based on my dissatisfactory experience with the microwave and their staff.

The Panasonic microwave, model NNT945SFX, was purchased from a local Walmart on 06/14/12. Within less than a year, I had it repaired at a local repair center 3 times for the same problem. The problem is with the door not closing properly or should I say not electrically activating the switch properly. I can program the timer and the inside light does come on, but the motor does not turn and the microwave does not heat. Now about three weeks after the 3rd repair, the same problem is happening again. I believe that this model is a bad design b/c I do notice that opening/closing the door is harder than other microwaves.
The Panasonic microwave was supposed to be a replacement for my outdated, but in perfect working condition, microwave (another brand name) that I bought at a church garage sale for $5 over 12 years ago. Since I donated that old microwave to charity, I ended up having to buy another microwave (not Panasonic, of course) while the broken Panasonic microwave was in the shop for the 2nd repair. I contacted Panasonic many times in the past for the same problem. It had already cost me so much time off from work, as well as more money than the initial cost of the defective microwave itself. I will NOT bring it to the repair center again. I look forward to a quick resolution from Panasonic, and I hope that Panasonic does stand by their products. I will provide a status update to this complaint soon.

Just purchased this NN SD382S Panasonic. I'm using it for the first time and it malfunctioned! I was cooking cauliflower and I assumed it was done, because it beeped the turntable and the light went off. Turns out it was still sending out radio waves! My right hand became very warm in front of the mica panel inside when I put my hands in to take the dish out. I shut the door and turned off my range hood on my stove. I could hear the microwave humming away but no light or turntable on. It does not do this every time, but very often it is going back ASAP. I wish I could find a Citizen microwave. Mine lasted over ten years! Very shoddy quality Panasonic. Move your manufacturing from China back to Japan!

My $215 Panasonic microwave nn-sd987 is 20 months old and the inverter went bad. This is a common problem but not covered by warranty. It cost $209 to fix plus $50 fee just to look at it. This is more than the cost of the microwave. Panasonic said they have no life expectancy for their electronics, which tells me that they have no quality testing on new products. Panasonic products are junk and will never get my business again.

I purchased a Panasonic Inverter stainless steel, model# NN-T945SFX; serial # 6A30040459, over a year ago. This was a $150 microwave and has only lasted 14 months or so. My last oven was only $70 and lasted me 10 years. The door latch has quit working properly, therefore causing the light to stay on and the function not to work at all. After contacting Panasonic, I was offered to take the product to an authorized dealer in another state for service that they would probably cover as this has been seen in the past to be a defect of this product. Seriously, in another state, that is my only option? I don't know where these service reps reside, but here in the US, gas prices are out of the roof and I could obviously purchase another brand for less that will last me much longer. I just installed Panasonic household microwave Model No. NN-H965WFX to replace an older Panasonic microwave that has provided me with more than 14 years of usage. This "new" model borders on "junk" quality. Japan, did Mr. Deming not teach your companies about quality? This microwave is manufactured in China. I purchased the Panasonic inverter microwave about three years ago and recently it began to shut off unexpectedly sometimes. I noticed it would interrupt my cordless telephone when in use. I was microwaving a bowl on ravioli in water and noticed a burnt electrical smell. I removed the food item and discovered a large hole burned into the bottom of the microwave near the back, about the size of a half dollar. At first, I thought something was spilled there but when I wiped it, the metal crumbled all around it and left a hole about 1.5 inches across. It makes me angry because now I am afraid that dangerous microwave radiation may have escaped and contaminated my food or even gotten into the air and poisoned me. I cannot believe this microwave oven is constructed so cheaply that the inside just fell apart. I really have no idea why this happened. I had to air out the house that smell was so bad. I had to unplug the ** thing because I do not know why it burned a large hole in it and it could have some sort of electrical short. I will not buy another Panasonic, that is for sure.
