Problem 1: Update per instruction led to complete disappearance of program. I had to search my computer to find an executable file. (I had similar problems with an update last year). Problem 2: The program would not allow me to enter 6 months of Social Security benefits. It insisted on entering 12 month value, and when I entered the correction, the program informed me that I could not file electronically. Problem 3: No answer on the phone line for customer service. Problem 4: No email access provided for customer service - the embedded port does not open to allow communication. If I can ever reach the company, I am going to request a full refund. Next year, I am going to use a different program.

I have used TaxACT for 6 years previously and was very satisfied. Others use my computer to file their taxes through TaxACT (at my recommendation). Now I cannot log in for my own once I timed out. It will not recognize me but if I try to register again, they say I already exist. I have tried six times and it only recognizes the previous user even though I had already started my own taxes. I give up. I'm going to use H&R Block even though I have to start over. For 25 minutes I have tried to log back in after timing out and it doesn't recognize me.

Customer for many years. Have caught bugs in their software in the past, and believe that I have found another one for 2018. Can't file until this problem is resolved, and can't get any help via email (have waited 7 days), and the telephone won't accept my call at all. Prices have sky-rocketed, especially this year. Probably no hope in getting my $105 dollar refunded. I'll bet their phone lines are quite open to sell product, and to support their professional clientele. Goodbye, TaxACT, I'm going to find someone who will at least talk to me.

I have been using TaxACT for 10 years or more. This is the first time that I cannot get through to their tech support. I cannot file a paper return with the state of Arizona because the form 140 is not updated as of this date. When I print out my return, it says not updated and prints a big black line across the top of the form 140 that says do not file. I have tried to contact anyone who could help me to no avail. I finally got a hold of someone in sales, and they couldn't do anything for me, other than to tell me that the forms have not been released yet. But released by everyone else. What a joke! Last year with this company!

I like many others was annoyed by not being able to input some needed data in the “free” version so I had to upgrade in order to complete by simple return (just retirement income and 2 small interest inputs). Once I upgraded it was pretty fast for my state and federal. Both my returns were accepted almost immediately and I actually had my federal refund direct deposited in 5 days.

I used TaxACT and selected the free service. After nearly 45 minutes of entering info the questions started to repeat and it said that my type of refund will cost $49 to file. Fine. I might mention that my return isn’t complex, at all. Single. 2 jobs. Entered my interest on student loans and my insurance info, didn’t get any special help from them or anything. Anyway. By the time I get to the end they added another $45 to file and another $25 for god only knows what. I am very impatient so I just selected the option for it to come out of my refund, and filed. The next day I needed my AGI - can’t find it ANYWHERE.

Then it kept saying that there’s only 3 easy steps: Decide how to file, Pay the $119 with a credit card, and file. I went round and round on their site and after trying to find my files tax info for about 15 minutes I finally did - the $119 is coming out of my taxes and my refund was accepted by the IRS!! This site is confusing, doesn’t offer what it promises, and tries to double charge. Maybe their commercial mentioning a “$100 bonus” is a $100 bonus for THEM, I certainly got nothing but ripped off.

I have been TaxAct user for the last 10+ years and had been very supportive so far - Always took the Premier, but hardly used that service since I am ok to answer my own questions. Like every year I subscribed for the Premier and in need to get some of the Tax Questions clarified. I have been trying to use the phone number, send multiple emails asking the questions, no REPLY for the last 1 week. Remember, I have paid for the service. I strongly recommend to relook on this for those who has been using this service. I also sign up for their extended Audit help service for 50-70 bucks. Again I have never used, so don't about it. Given the current situation, this will be my last year with TaxAct since unless they respond to my questions in the next day or two. TaxAct users - Please relook, there are some significant issue to them. I guess the company is HAVING SOME SEVERE issues which I am not aware of it.

Like many other reviews I have now read I am a long time TaxACT user. I have nothing other than the basics except my retirement. I noted when I logged in this year that the 0$ version included "Retirement income" and so I chose the 0$ version. On finishing the process of entering my Federal and State tax information as well as completing all the reviews and reading through their attempts to get me to purchase additional products and security I reached the filing page and low and behold I was unable to file without upgrading to the Deluxe version. Seems because I have a 401k contribution there is the possibility of receiving a credit which in prior years they would have asked if I wanted to take and would have told me that I would need to upgrade in order to have them complete the extra forms.

This year they did not ask if I wanted to claim the credit, they automatically filled out the form and did not disclosed the addition of the not covered forms during the entry process. Instead as many are finding out, they elect to be deceitful and wait until I had completed the process. Beyond that the listing of Retirement Income on the covered items is in my opinion deceitful as well. In fact when people talk about retirement income they do not mean just the income received but the process of saving, investing, and enjoying. I have sent emails to TaxACT and filled out their online survey requesting they contact me, thus far they have declined. Overall it may cost the same to go to one of the others, but I would far prefer to pay one that is upfront about the cost than one willing to deceitfully bait and switch.

Have used TaxACT for several years and been happy. Filed for free last year. Used the free edition this year. Spent about 3 hours inputting all my info. The very last step before filing a note popped up saying I needed to upgrade to Deluxe because my wife had ObamaCare for 3 months and the 2 forms applying to that were not free. Went from free to $29.95 for federal and $39.95 for state. They knew well ahead of the end that I had that from info I supplied. I paid but will never use them again. Also, went to print out my return at the end and only the federal printed. Had to go back in to get the state return. I owed on my state taxes and in previous years it would print out a voucher to send to the state with my check. That did not happen either. They suck!

I have been using TaxAct for at least 6 years, and I am completely shocked at how horrible they are this year. I have never had issues in the past, but this year has been a completely different experience. First off, they've been emailing me for months about how if I file online before a certain date I'll get a discount, which is nice, but I was receiving far too many emails about this advertisement. Second, when I finally logged onto my account, it showed me four different options to file my Federal refund. (Side Note: I don't have to do a State refund because FL doesn't have a State tax, therefore I just need to do my Federal Refund.)

Of course, I opted to do the "free" Basic option because I don't have all the excess items necessary to do the Basic+ ($9.95) or Deluxe+ ($29.95) or Premier+ ($34.95) so naturally I selected the 'free" Basic option. Well, after inputting all my data (it's different from 2017, so a basic transfer wouldn't work), answering all the questions and when it was time to submit, I got the message saying, I automatically was upgraded to Deluxe+ because I had selected something on my Federal return and the "free" basic option wasn't an option for what I selected. It was really odd! And now there isn't even an option for the Basic+ and I can only do my taxes with TaxAct if I pay the $29.95. That is ridiculous and false representation by TaxAct.

Now on my account there are only three options available, but no matter I do it isn't free and they wont let me proceed forward to submit without paying the fee. With that said, I am going to take other people's advice on here and check out TurboTax and H&R Block because I have simple taxes, I don't own property, I don't have students loans or anything that requires me to do more than a simple W-2. TaxAct is horrible now! Please don't use! As soon as I find another means to submit, I will update this review.

And they will not answer the phone, or respond to my e-mails for help or to refund my money. I shall not dispute the charge on my credit card and move on to some other company's software. Yeah, really, $70 only to have the IRS reject my excruciatingly simple return with zero explanation? I had to tweet at TaxAct to get them to respond to any of my inquiries after a week of waiting. I finally figured out why my return was rejected, and now I get to deal with the IRS as they scramble to recover from the partial shutdown. Maybe some of the difficulty would have happened anyway, but my experience with TaxAct wasn't exactly encouraging. I'll be attempting to get my money refunded and filing with H&R Block once I figure out what happened on the government side of things.

After reading other reviews from people who have experienced the same, I decided NOT to file with TaxACT and when with HRBlock's site instead. Actually FREE! Couldn't be happier with making the switch. The site was easy to use and it was worth it to go through the process a second time (after wasting my time with TaxACT the first go round)!

I’ve been using TaxACT for 5 years. This year they changed their “free” form to NOT include anyone using the Earned Income Credit - this includes anyone who has insurance thru Covered California, the Affordable Care Act, Obamacare, etc. You will be charged Deluxe $69.90 ($29 Fed, $39 State) at the very last step after your hours of work or you cannot go forward. The customer service reps are almost non-existent, and when I finally got a call back from TaxACT's customer service 2 hours later they were extremely rude, and ended up hanging up on me when asking why I was charged for the Deluxe State upgrade ($39) if the EIC only affects the Federal tax return. Never again TaxACT. And ps - after researching this, EIC is still free at TurboTax which just hurts my feelings more at this point.

Do not use these guys, I used them in the past successfully but not this year, overpriced like others say but that's not the worst of it. Their program uses the wrong information imported from federal to state giving you a larger refund, sounds nice till you're rejected or audited. State is supposed to be imported from federal gross adjusted income, instead it imports from federal taxable income approx 5 lines lower on the 1040. This will be a big red flag and you'll be paying back your state with interest and possibly fines.

I am completely dissatisfied with TaxACT this year after using them for over the past ten years. The TaxACT program attached a state of TN return to the Federal Return and then charged my credit card two fees - $40.55 and $38.36 - I did not order a State return as there was no need to. Did not complete any State return but TaxACT sent something to the TN Department of Revenue. When I phoned about the charges, I was rudely spoken to by two employees - and neither could tell me what was sent to the state office. I can find no record of a state return to print either. Do not recommend TaxACT any longer to anyone and I will definitely not use TaxACT again. I question the integrity of this company and guess I will probably have to deal with the TN Dept of Revenue caused by the incompetency of TaxACT.

Completed entire return, went to file, forced to upgrade: $29.95 for Federal, and 39.95 for State. I understand from reading elsewhere that if you cannot pay the fees up-front (say if you're a poor unemployed college student who can't find work), that there's an additional $40 fee for taking the fees from your eventual return. If I file anyways, I look forward to receiving court assessed rewards when the eventual class action files and wins.

They also have altered their usual "pester you to purchase upgrades" at every single step of going through the form process to actually manipulate you into clicking accidentally because you think something is legitimate, and once you do, you cannot 'downgrade' back to free. I'm willing to put up with the pester in order to file a free return, even if it is so very very heavy-handed, but not this. This is manipulative and fraudulent.

Again, it is a basic form, if you cannot itemize due to the standard deduction increase, and the cost is over double from last year. I've used TaxAct to file for free for at least a decade and referred my family to them. This year, I chose the free file, completed with no changes from past year and at the end... was forced to upgrade to their "Deluxe+" version that cost me $30 for Federal and would have been another $40 for State, which I never used TaxAct for. I hesistantly paid and filed this year because I just spent the time to complete the form. I will not be using TaxAct again and I'll tell everyone not to. The amounts were seriously underreported, which would have resulted in underreporting of my taxes had I filled without realizing the error. Be very careful if you are using the TAXACT online tax program.

After going through and entering all of my information and attempting to filing my taxes they forced me to upgrade to TaxACT Deluxe for $70 (state and federal!). At that price I could pay someone to do it for me. Had I not spent all of that time filling out my information I would not have used them this year and DEFINITELY will not be next year. SUPER disappointed.

For the last few years, I have had a great experience with TaxAct. Last year (2017) however, I filed as I normally do (Married filing separately) and during the "final" check, the software informed me that there was a credit that I had not included, but was eligible for. Until this point, I never applied for that credit, because I was not eligible for it. When TaxAct said that I had "forgotten" to file for this credit (I never got that alert before, when I didn't file for it), I took this to mean that the requirements for this credit may have changed, so I filed for the credit. The credit was given to me, and went through. Fast forward 6 months later, and I receive a letter from the state, that I have to pay the credit back, to the tune of $725 + interest, because my filing status was NOT eligible!!

TaxAct should have known this. I am VERY upset about this. I COUNT on TaxAct to know what they are doing, because I DON'T. When they cause me to have to pay back money for a credit that THEY prompted me to take, but was not eligible for, that's a problem for me. I am not sure at this point, whether or not I will use them again. Maybe this was just a fluke, but because of my satisfaction with TaxAct in the past, I have recommended them to several friends and family. If you DO use them, make sure that you check out all credits (online, through your state, or IRS websites, to make sure that your filing status is eligible for these credits). That way, you'll avoid any unnecessary charges/interest/penalties.

When I contacted Franchise Tax Board they explained to me that TaxAct software has incorrectly calculated my taxes and TaxAct determined that I do not owe penalty however as per the FORM 5805 instructions the penalty should have been assessed and Franchise Tax Board calculations are correct. All the data that I entered into TaxAct while filing the taxes were correct but TaxAct software has major bug in determination of estimated tax payment penalty. To be specific, as per FORM 5805, if the 2016 AGI is greater than $150K, the 110% of Taxes paid in 2016 should be entered in Part II Line #5 in the form.

This requirement is very clear on FORM 5805 and very basic check to determine the penalty. But TaxAct does not have this check. This software calculation error may have impacted all their customers not just me. Contacted their customers service but they are of no use, very bad experience. If you received a penalty notice from Franchise Tax Board California related to estimated tax payments, then it is due to wrong calculation by TaxAct, please be aware. I will never use TaxAct again. I’ve paid my money to use the software, you’re not e-filing for me, but you’re charging as if I had. Why have the prices skyrocketed? The only difference I can see is it’s more difficult to use than previous years. I didn’t even get a digital receipt for paying... 3 different times mind you. There was no option to pay in one lump sum and it’s my own fault for not writing down confirmation numbers. I paid the money because I spent hours trying to figure it out, but I won’t be returning next year. What used to be $30 cost $108. This level of price gouging has me looking for a new company. This year the forms are all hidden from view. Everything is menu or question driven. It took me over an hour just to find by accident where to put the property tax figures at. And that was with using their instructions on how to get to that field. I even made a mistake by purchasing their "Upgrade" in hopes the tax forms would appear. Nope! Sure didn't. That was a $39.95 mistake.

I had to do taxes for two different states. I wasted my entire Saturday trying to get the taxes filled out with their program. The program was not taking the data and sharing it with the other form. It got so bad I did the taxes manually. Somehow, I hit the right combo online and it finally calculated out to what I had down already on paper even though I couldn't see the actual forms. Now for another $74.00 they will allow me to submit the two states electronically. $113.95 total and probably close to 16 hours spent doing them. Plus this makes day 4 of not receiving an email from them about the forms not calculating between the states.

At this point I wanted to just leave. What an **. Okay, ready for it? He gets to the filing of the refund and says, "Oh. You didn't do the federal; so you have to mail them in. And the fee was 48.00 for state online. And oh yeah, you have to pay 67.00 since you didn't do federal." They are so deceptive. I will NOT go back ever.

When preparing my return and entering in detailed charitable contribution data, the software did not auto save my entries, but just deleted the information when there was a period of inactivity. As a result I will have to file an amended return. The program is very secretive while you are entering data so that they can charge the fees at the end. This makes review and error correction extremely difficult, if not impossible. I would not recommend using TaxACT.

Here it is March 12, 2018, and the Estimated Tax component of their software is still not available. You get a message that this will be available as part of a future software update. Really? When? It's the middle of March and you still can't do your taxes. For shame! I tried calling them (you can call if you pay) and the wait time was nearly 2 hours. So, I emailed them. Their software says you'll get a confirmation email that your message was received and they'll get back to you in 2 - 3 business day. Guess what? No confirmation email and no response. STAY AWAY FROM THIS AT ALL COSTS.

They say they have no access to opening individual forms. What good are they if they can't even open your 1040 form to check it. Never ever try to do taxes on a computer again. Just blew about $60.

I decided to try this, because I thought it would be cheaper than using H&R Block's TaxCut software as I have since it came out. I haven't itemized in two years, because I paid off my mortgage, and am retired. TaxAct "says" in its marketing that it can import all of the big guy's prior year data. This is a total falsehood. Once I committed to it with my credit card info and began trying to do this year's return I learned it had to have a pdf of your prior year's return and could not simply import the data from the TaxCut data file. Fortunately, I had saved a pdf of last year's return so I thought I would be OK. NOT SO. All that it imported was my name and SSN along with my wife's. It imported NO prior year info like the names and addresses of the issuers of my various 1099Rs or 1099INT or DIV. This is one of the things I liked about using TaxCut, because it imported all of that from prior years. It saves me a lot of time.

After tediously entering all of the data for the federal return, I found that I would have to pay an additional $39 to get the PA state version. The marketing blurbs I had read, led me to believe that the state version was included in the "Plus" version of TaxAct for under $30. So, since I don't usually owe any state tax (in PA pensions and SS are not taxable), I figured I could do that on paper and proceeded to try to file my federal taxes.

When I got to the point in the program to e-file that is when they actually will charge your credit card, even though they take all of that info up front. When I tried to perform this transaction, I got a message that their server couldn't handle transactions at this time and that I should check back later. After starting to write this review I tried to get back into my return but cannot do so. I've attached a screenshot of where I am now stuck. I can click on "Open" and it flashes some pages, but comes back to the same screen. I can click on "Continue where I left off" and it does the same thing. I now can't even get back into my return! This thing is a nightmare! DO NOT USE IT. I don't know what is meant by "Order Number" in this review entry form so I can't provide that.

I used TaxAct to file my taxes this year. When I finished my taxes I had two amounts that were to be my return. I later got back my federal return at the amount stated and then later got back my state at an amount significantly lower than what I was supposed to get back. I went back to their site and checked my returns and both numbers had changed. State had dropped by around $200 and federal had increased by $130. I spoke to their customer service and was just told "things can change due to tax law changes but we can do nothing for you, contact the IRS" and they would not do anything for me beyond that. I contacted the IRS and they told me that they had received my return for the original amount and not the increased amount that it now read.

So my returns ended up being both of the lower amounts instead of what they were supposed to be when I originally did my taxes on the site, I got back the lower Fed amount before they increased it on their site and the lower state amount after they had reduced it. Somehow between my submitting on their site and getting my returns my returns reduced by a combined $350 or so and they refused to even help me on their customer support at all to explain anything, just telling me that they had nothing to do with it and I would have to contact the IRS.

They told me that I was supposed to be charged the $39.22 though because I added the State. I explained that I did not and even confirmed that on my account it is only showing Federal as being filed and printed.

She claimed that the State printed with the Federal, which I again told her it did not. I asked to speak to a supervisor and she hung up on me. I should also mention that she could not find my account because she was too busy laughing with co-workers to be able to listen to me spell my name for her 2 letters at a time. This was my third year of using the consumer version. (Had about 300 clients, so that's a lot of Taxact returns that I did over the years.) Every year I applied my refund to the next year's estimates. I know I did this with the consumer version the past 2 years. This year I couldn't. You need to fill out the estimate form to do this. Today, 3/8/18, their federal estimated form still wasn't ready. And for NY, although the program allowed me "to apply", you need to fill out estimated payments for the entire year. I didn't want to do that and I assume the federal would have made me do that too (if it had been ready).

So... I ended up with direct deposits. They did not charge me anything additional to do this. However, from the billing page, it looks like if you fill out the estimated page there is an additional charge. I'm not too sure I'll use them next year. I'm going to give them a call after season and discuss. I did fill out the comments section about this.

In my own case when TaxACT did the forms for State Homestead/Property tax relief for the state of Kansas it reported a rollover from an 401(k) to an IRA as being regular income disqualifying me for the Homestead/Property tax relief. Since rolling over a tax qualified plan to another tax-qualified plan is really just a change of trustees handling a tax deferred amount. I'm pretty sure this amount should not be counted as ordinary income. Also TaxACT took the info for electronic filing but had a program error and would not file. It did produce paper returns that I used to file. In addition they wanted an extra $37.00 to file the state return. Form 8606 instructions say to 'attach statement' to 1040 after listing on appropriate lines. TaxACT instructions say attaching this statement will prevent me filing electronically. This year I was hit with an absurdly high fee to file, $87.07 total to file federal and state taxes online. The desktop program always cost about $21.95 each year with free federal filing and $7.95 to file state taxes, or $29.90 total. Why on earth is it now $57.17 more to file online, which was traditionally cheaper than the desktop version? The online version wasn't even easy to use, with very little in the way of tips and walk-throughs if I had questions. This had become an absolute scam. I will never use this program again.

I spent under $30 the last few years for both state and federal taxes. This year, it was over $60... That was before I was about to be finished and see that they slapped on an extra ~ $40 deposit fee, which did not exist before. When all was said and done, I ended up spending over $100 for my taxes, while still having to manually update every damn transaction in my brokerage account that TurboTax would have automated. And no way to provide feedback to the company (I would have been happy to try to work out the difficulties, but there's no way to talk to anybody. At all. It's beyond completely frustrating!). Basically, you pay your money and you're on your own. If it doesn't work right, I guess it's just too bad. Money down the drain. I tried calling. Wait times of multiple hours every time I tried. Maybe I'll send a letter, if I can find an address.

My problem is: for the credit for taxes paid to another state (for Minnesota), I need to indicate which state the taxes were paid to (Wisconsin). There is no Wisconsin on the drop down list, and you can't type it in by hand. In other words, I'm dead in the water. Can't continue, can't file. MY $76 IS GONE AND I SEEM TO HAVE NO RECOURSE. I am so angry I can hardly think. I certainly can't recommend TaxAct to anyone, and now I'm going to have to pay MORE MONEY in order to get my tax returns done. I thought I would be a loyal lifetime customer. It's very disheartening. When I file a tax return, I expect to be able to save the return onto my computer and to be able to print it. I have been using TaxAct.com (TaxAct) for about 20 years and I have never had a problem there until today. It will be a cold day in hell before I EVER use them again! A lot has changed with them since last year. I was filing a simple return for a friend. I will not be filing my return or anyone else's return with TaxAct from now on. I had the following problems with TaxAct today:

    1) I did not get a text directly from the IRS when the return was accepted, as I always have in previous years. Instead I got a text from TaxAct and it took a lot longer to get to me. I guess they think I am supposed to just take their word for it that the return had been accepted for processing by the IRS. I had to go the IRS site to verify that the return had been filed.

    2) This year I made the mistake of trying to file a Louisiana tax return with TaxAct. BIG MISTAKE! It would not let me save or print the return and did not give any indication that it had been successfully e-filed. About an hour later, I got a message from TaxAct (not directly from the state of Louisiana) saying that the return had been filed. Trying to save and print the state return also caused a lot of problems with saving and printing the federal return. After about an hour of live chat and talking on the phone, I finally got my federal return to save and print.

Then they informed me that in about three weeks I might be able to save and print the state return. They said there was some kind of problem with the format required by Louisiana. That should not be my problem. They used to lie to people by saying that the state return was free and then try to charge to print it. At least that was before it actually got filed, so the customer could avoid this. The Louisiana Dept. of Revenue has a website that works very well, where people can file their state taxes for free with no surprises. If TaxAct can't provide this service properly, they should just say so and quit causing problems for people.

My time is too valuable and my refund is too important for me to trust TaxAct again. I used to think they were great, but not anymore. I am waiting for more information before I file my tax returns, but it looks like the H&R Block free filing is going to work as advertised. On the live chat I told TaxAct that I was considering filing complaints with the Federal Trade Commission, the IRS and the Louisiana Attorney General as well as taking the matter to an attorney I know for a possible class action. The person on the other end said I was being "unprofessional". She must have thought I was joking. She said they don't charge to print the return, but they charge for the use of their service. What does that mean? Later she said that is free to print both state and federal returns. I looked on the TaxAct site, but I can't find the order number or receipt anywhere.

The first obstacle was that their product refused to work with any installation of Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge that I had installed on my personal computers. I was able to get it to work with Mozilla Firefox. This would deter most people I'm sure but it was worth saving a few dollars over using the competition. The next obstacle came when I needed to upload a particular form to send the IRS. The form would never successfully upload to their servers. Every time I tried to upload and preview it there would be a blank document. I did everything their FAQs suggested. Still nothing would work. So, I figured whatever, I'll just mail it in! On 2/2/17 I filed my taxes with hopes of a quick acceptance so I could get the appropriate forms mailed to the IRS.

On 2/12/17 my taxes were still not accepted by the IRS. The IRS had no data on my taxes AT ALL. So, I decided to call TaxAct to see if they would be of any assistance as we aren't utilizing EITC or ACTC which would both slow down our Tax Return. When I called them I was greeted by what sounded to be the most miserable lady on the planet. I understand that you work at a call center for a tax preparation company and I'm sure you get a lot of the same questions over and over but the level of rudeness she had was just astounding. After doing further research online I saw where other people were suggesting to file with another Filing Service. So, I ultimately refiled my taxes on 2/13/17 using TurboTax and within 12 hours both my State and Federal Tax Returns have been accepted.

I could've have spent that money with a company that actually had support available. After paying to e-file I was prompted for last year's AGI. However, earlier in the process I was unable to log in with last year's info (I assume because the e-mail I had been using was gone?) so I made a new account. Well, there is NO WAY to get help with sign on issues like I had online, you HAVE TO CALL THEM. READ THIS CAREFULLY, YOU WILL NOT GET THROUGH TO THEM. After numerous calls waiting OVER 2 hours I gave up (People wonder what drives people to "go postal"? Deal with TaxACT and you'll have an idea...)

Finally TWO WEEKS later I searched how to find my AGI and realized I could get it online through the IRS site. #1) SHAME on you TaxACT for not listing this as an option for people in your FAQs - would drastically decrease your call volume! Makes me wonder who is directing your show over there? Poor management somewhere... #2) SHAME SHAME on you TaxACT for allowing high hold times to continue. I would think after a day or two of that something would be done (i.e hire OR pay more for OT, like time and a half plus 10.00 more each hour, whatever it takes. Surely you must know that your business will be hurt if people can't use your service and can't reach help?! Again, makes me wonder who is in charge.

This year was an extremely frustrating experience that delayed my return by 2 weeks. If anyone is reading this that is already in the catastrophe that is TaxACT - you may be able to get the help you need on the IRS.Gov site. Takes a few minutes to sign up, you'll need some documentation but it's pretty simple and most info needed is there! Wish I'd have known that 2 weeks ago!

This time when I checked on them, the IRS site doesn't even show they have them, just that people with EIC and CTC will not get theirs until late Feb. But my friend who had both those credits went thru H&R block online for free and received her taxes within 10 days.

I called TaxACT to make sure mine went thru. When I told the lady my friend got hers, the lady in a condescending tone got loud and proceeded to tell me over and over, "There is no one in the entire country that has received their taxes if they had EIC or CTC. No one! You can call the IRS and ask! NO ONE HAS GOTTEN IT." Like I was lying or something, so then I asked what about my state taxes? It's showing that they haven't been received. To which she replies, "OH THEY HAVE THEM, I HAVE THE CONFIRMATION NUMBER!!" Which I asked if I could have. She said no and there is nothing else for me to do. I let her go. The next day, state taxes finally said they were received. But just on that phone call alone and her acting like I was lying or stupid...will make me use H&R block next year.

I have used TaxACT for a number of years. I also help family members through the program. So far for 2017 I helped two people. In both cases, printing the returns was a huge problem. Also, in both cases, the NY State return could not be filed due to forms not being ready. Was it a surprise to TaxAct that NY residents would be filing returns? In one of these two cases, the program told me the efile could not go through for both, so I chose for only the Federal to efile, and it told me it could not file it due to not having a pin #. Yet two days later I was told by my sister she got an email confirming BOTH were filed.

I don't think TaxAct was ready for us, and the fees have tripled in two years. TaxAct, you need to tell people upfront what their fees will be, and you need to be more proactive in updating your system so it's ready to use by Jan 1. I will not be using this program for my return this year, and will never recommend it again. Oh, and not being able to get someone on the phone or on a chat makes it even more difficult.

I did not finish this year's taxes and think I will delete and go elsewhere. I also referred my daughter and heard nothing about that. I have been using TaxACT several years (my son as well). I've been bitten on the butt by this service before years ago because it was confusing but decided to try it this year and save some dollars, since my situation is very simple. First, the "Walk-Thru" process is sparse at best. I was confused again and worried that I'd missed something. Sure enough, in the review, I saw a number that I misinterpreted as being correctly placed. Fine, whatever, at least it's cheap, right? NOPE! Oh, it's only $27 and federal is free, right? NOPE! $29 for federal, uhg, fine and then they charge $39 to direct deposit!!! The nail in the coffin is that I COULD NOT VIEW AND PRINT MY RETURN, hitting their link did nothing. I made sure Adobe was updated and even restarted my machine but now the only way to view my return is to opt to send it paper in the mail. I'm on hold with support, says it'll be a 40-minute wait. I AM NOT USING THEM AGAIN!!!

When I went back to file the State, I can't for the life of me figure out how to split the refund like I did on the Federal. If you choose to file the State electronically, it uses the first entry from the Federal information to deposit the refund. As far as I can tell, the refund will be going into the one designated account. A call to their support line netted me the message that my wait time was 58 minutes. I'll try to figure it out for myself, but this may be my last year to use this program. Not as easy as it used to be.

1- Fast, easy, free tax filing — Prepare, print and e-file your simple federal and state (1040EZ/A) for FREE. 2- $100K Accuracy Guarantee — Worries over errors and audits are a thing of the past with an accuracy guarantee worth $100,000. 3- Real-Time Refund Status — Get a clear picture of your refund or amount due as you prepare your return. If you call customer service to explain the problem - and that you're willing to pay additional for a downloadable version - THEY WILL NOT HELP TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. TaxACT used to be very cheap and easy to use. I have used them for about the last four years. This year, I attempted to use them again. I had solar panels installed this past year and tax credits would cover half the cost. Long story short, TaxACT didn't have current forms for me to fill out so I couldn't get my tax credits. I went to TurboTax and used their deluxe version and was able to do my taxes in about 1.5 hours! I am getting over $4800 back in tax credits from the feds and my state for the solar install. I also noticed that TaxACT is as much money now as TurboTax. TaxACT is no longer a bargain and for me, is no longer a player in the tax prep world.

I wouldn't waste your time trying to use TaxACT. TurboTax is rated the number one tax preparer and I would gladly pay for a service that doesn't waste my time like TaxACT did this year. In fact, I almost thought I would have to use a CPA to do my taxes and get my solar tax credits as TaxACT was impossible for me to use in regards to solar credits, but TurboTax walked me right through it in a couple minutes!

TaxACT did efile my federal and state returns successfully and I've already received my correct refunds from both. The problem is, I can't print out my state return. TaxACT blames my state for not providing the form information. That's a lot of baloney. I've had to manually fill out my state copy for my records. The 2nd problem is when I go back to their website, the tax forms are now wrong and different than what was filed. Somehow, they've added business income that I never had. Their "Customer Service" said it must be my computer's problem. My computer is fine and so are the two other computers that I used to check TaxACT. My advice is to skip TaxACT and use another service. TaxACT has gotten too big and sloppy.

Entering through the IRS.gov free file links, we have e-filed federal and state returns with TaxAct.com for a number of years. We meet all the criteria for free filing, as usual, and this year our returns were identical to prior years in terms of forms used. After 90 mins and more of entering data and when at the final page to click "e-file your taxes," suddenly the only options offered were to quit without filing OR to "upgrade" to a service that would be a minimum of $76.

This is a tactic known as bait and switch, luring you in under one pretense and then switching the terms after you've devoted an entire morning to an endeavor. But it continues to get worse: after signing out of their software—not filing / not paying—we sent emails about this glaring error. We have received "read receipts" back but zero response. Then I just spent 15 minutes on hold at their (319) customer service phone (in Iowa) before giving up after hearing several "unusually high call volume" announcements interrupting the hold music. I intend to inform IRS.gov about this company and recommend they remove them from their listing of "Free File" services. To everyone else out there, caveat emptor!

After using TaxAct for 20 years and recommending it to many people, I am disappointed in their new business model, which in my opinion is designed to scam users. First, let me inform you that to e-file your 2017 Federal form it's $29.99 plus an additional $37 to file State and to import your data from last year it is $15. Of course, the following is only my opinion, but I think it is really sad that they have chosen to reprogram their system in such a way that the user is basically forced to select an upgrade, in my opinion. The problem occurs after you have entered all the information and elect e-file. You cannot move forward but the system will not tell you why. I tried on my Mac then moved to a PC and entered the same problem. If you select upgrade you then cannot undo it

The really troublesome part is their customer and tech support. They will tell you anything to get you off the phone without refunding your money. Their main reason for not refunding will be "you printed the form" even though your purpose in using the system is to e-file. They believe that insulates them and provides a legal reason taking your money. Also be aware, when I selected the unsubscribe link in their email I was directed to a page that was "not found" but instead has links to their homepage. You have to search to get to the unsubscribe page and it's not the first listing in their SEO. Apologies to all those who used TaxAct based on my recommendation.

This year, I decided to do it online, on their website, since it was free, as opposed to about the $30 I usually paid. Horrible mistake. I filed my taxes on Sunday, Jan. 28 and received an immediate email that the efile was successful and both federal and state are awaiting acceptance. That's the last I heard. I checked on Tues, Jan. 30 from the TaxACT website and it still said they were both awaiting acceptance and I would receive another email saying it was accepted. I went to the IRS.gov site and checked on the status of my refund.

At the point, it gave me a message saying they have no record of a return with that information and if it was correct, to enter the date and how it was filed (paper or efile). I checked the info, submitted the date and it showed a message saying that there is no information and to wait at least 24 hours after receiving the email that the tax return had been received. At that point, it had supposedly been received for 2 days.

Today is day 4. TaxACT's website still claims it was filed and is awaiting acceptance for both fed and state. IRS site still has the same message as above. I tried calling TaxACT and noticed 2 things. There isn't an option for customers with questions that didn't BUY the software, so if you did it for free online, you're out of luck. Also, it said they had a huge amount of calls and then it hung up on me. I tried emailing, but there is no way to email. I tried Facebook, but again, there is no way to contact. I have now sent them a tweet. I know of others who used different software and received acceptance within hours, which was always the case previously. I've been using TaxAct for over 10 years now! They changed a lot in the past year or two, this year the standard price really hiked. So I figured I try a new player in the market this year, Credit Karma tax, but when I reviewed the return back in April, there were a few things done wrong in the results that I didn't like and wasn't going to use to file. So I decided to just file for an automatic extension request with Credit Karma and to go back to TaxAct later after the tax season cooled down.

I was able to lock-in a very good discount of $7.50 for federal and $12.50 for state ($20 combined) on April 15 by doing this. That's still the highest I ever paid for this ($12.99 was the lowest). I procrastinated, and finally started re-entering everything into TaxAct last night, October 15 in order to file for my overdue refund. Would you believe it, for the first time ever, I found a ridiculous math error in TaxAct? That's worse than Credit Karma, which at least got the numbers right, even though it didn't put them all in the right boxes! This error is in the Asset Depreciation form for straight-line 39-year (non-residential) property.

It's a simply the original cost divided by the 39 years, and TaxAct's answer is wrong! It stands out since it doesn't match the prior year as it should. Even better, if I change the starting year for acquiring the asset (still in a past tax year), the annual value to deduct also changes slightly. Really! This is supposed be simply $150,000 divided by 39 to equal $3,846, but somehow TaxAct is giving me $3,838 and $3,842 instead! It's like the controversy time long ago when Microsoft's Windows 3.1 calculator utility had a bug where it gave incorrect answers. WTF (a computer that can't compute)!

I reproduced this issue on a new empty tax return with nothing else entered but this item. It's clearly a ridiculous bug! This problem is going to surprise a lot of people in years from now when they one day sell their property and find their accumulated depreciation from tax years 2016 onward are deficient! I'll bet TaxAct won't cover the losses than either under their accuracy guarantee when the time comes. TaxAct also inexplicably limited me to just 5 additional lines on my attached statement to expand a form, even though the actual statement page generated has 27 blank lines! Hello?

I guess this year's motto for TaxAct is higher cost for lower quality product. First time I ever saw an error in TaxAct, so it's embarrassing. Luckily, I caught the error in review, and since this problem is only visible on an internal worksheet that doesn't get filed, so I was able to fudge the numbers to get the proper final result onto the actual form, filed the return that way. I'm planning to call the TaxAct support team next week after 2016 e-Filing closes about these problems (they don't have Email support anymore?), as I figure that they should have a some free time by then to really look at it. Hopefully it'll be fixed in the 2017 version that way, if they are not already aware of it (I'm expecting that they are aware, but not going to proceed entirely on that assumption).

Bottom line - be careful with any tax prep software, check their work very closely if you can! TaxAct definitely had some issues this year, hope next year will be better. P.S. TaxAct does still have the free 1040 Preview without paying, however they moved it and it's pretty hard to find now. I found it by accident only now after the fact, looking for how to print my fee receipt!

Purchased this product from TaxACT. Paid 81 dollars for this software which was what they said it was. For this price I was suppose to get product that would allow me to do a business return along with personal taxes. Instead I got the basic form. When I go to the business portion it asks for the unlock code. They has sent me a confirmation email when I made the purchase with the unlock code. It didn't work after I tried it for 3 times. It just kept going back to the message to unlock.

I called support and they were of no help. They ask me for my user name and email which I supplied. They asked for my address. I gave this information. Then they ask for my name on the account. At this point I am thinking you can download the software to your desktop. Why do they need this information. I am not going to e-file it through them nor am I going to submit the return online. I am going to mail it in. I pay for the product with the business capability. End of transaction. It should work or they have a faulty product or they try to micro manage too much.

They seem to want you to file online. I asked for a refund and they sent me notification that it may take up to 2 weeks. I paid the price they asked for the product. I should have gotten an unlocked product or the very least the unlock code should work. If there was a secret to using the unlock code they should have told me the procedures or provided it in the instruction. There was no need to call them. It is difficult to find the phone number for them as they want you to use other avenues first.

Contact us link is misleading. With the information I gave them they are able to reverse the charges but would not provide help in solving the unlock problem. I have used them for 8 years and never had this problem. I never had to unlock the downloaded version. I paid for the program and that's it. If it's a desktop product then it should work. I believe that their problem is they focus too much on trying to get the customer to file online. They offer downloads but they make you work for it instead of keeping it simple simon.

The TaxACT service makes it appear as though your taxes are being paid through them. I e-filed my return where it asked for my credit card for the $15 payment for using this so-called service. When I receive a notice that my federal return has been accepted, and receive emails saying my taxes have been filed and my return accepted one is led to believe that the taxes were paid. Wrong. Hidden multiple clicks after finding out your e-filing has been accepted is the location where you can pay your federal taxes. Taxact.com has been my go to tax software and program since the mid-2000s, however this year, 2017, they screwed everything up and I am still waiting for my return... since February 3rd, 2017. First, their software claimed that my premium (paid) tax forms were submitted and received without error on February 3, 2017. A day later, I received a notice that I should receive my refund within 21 days. That is where the normality ended and everything went south.

After not receiving my refund by the end of February, I contacted TaxACT after finally finding a customer service number and asked what was going on. They stated that there was a "glitch" in the electronic submission of Form 8885 (yes, the stupid ACA-Obamacare form) and that they had to re-submit on February 13th. They never once contacted me to notify me of the error or the delay. When asked why, they said it was a minor error and everything would be fixed and my refund received in a couple days (first week of March).

After not receiving my refund in the first 2 weeks of March, I contacted the IRS only to discover that TaxACT failed to inform me that their error would set my refund back for a minimum of 6-weeks as the IRS had to reprocess the forms manually and that I should have my refund by the end of the 3rd week of April. I contacted TaxACT regarding this and they said that they only "just received the same information" and apologized for the delay. I demanded a refund of my filing charges and after arguing with me and finally getting a manager, I got my refund issued.

April has come and gone, so I called the IRS back. After an hour on hold, and being hung up on one time before, I was told that my return was still in their errors department and nothing had been done with it. They assured me that this time, they would get it out of that department and fast-tracked for refunding... but it would take an additional 30-days for processing (but would likely be sooner). Nothing more could be done until then.

Today is day 29, and still nothing. I am again still on hold with the IRS waiting to find out where my return is... it is likely still stuck in their black hole of "errors" and I will be told to wait another 30 days. ALL BECAUSE OF THE DISHONESTY AND POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE OF TAXACT!! Never again will I do business with TaxACT due to this issue. They have officially lost a long-time customer and supporter. And after reading the many similar situations on ConsumerAffairs, I believe a class action lawsuit may be in order due to the gross negligence and abuse of the TaxACT company! If any law firms pick this up, please contact me as I wish to file my complaint and use my case as a lead in this situation!

I've been using TaxACT for many years and I don't have any issues about it. They provide quick consulting if you were enrolled to Premium and low price and free State filing. This year is terrible! For the amount of $85 in total you get Federal and State with different prices. I should have gotten the review first before I proceed :(. I should get tax preparer to prepare this for me and she would cost only $50. To the fact that I have no refund, this $85 really matters on my pocket.

Few errors I found in TaxACT software this year 2016. First, there is no question to fill up the right way for Non-custodial info in the Form 8332 (Release/Revocation of Release Claim to Exemption by Custodial Parent). Their system reflects the same name of custodian to the non-custodial part. This should be able to input the name of non-custodial where you would release the exemption to. I ended up getting the form at irs.gov website and manually do it the form. It would take time for me to resolve this issue because there is no live support or call numbers to call to. I can't believe it!!!

Secondly, the e-file didn't go through and requested me to delete the 1 dependent because other person claimed it already. How would the system went through that logic if I filed 8332? It should went through. Lastly, when I try to fix the errors I can't log in and it says multiple attempts had been made. I tried the password to change but the questions seemed not familiar. This is surprising because I slept and when I wake up I continue what I have been left off. No change of password for sure. As I said, no live support to call for immediate action. I ENDED UP FILING my return to paper mail. This is what I paid for $85. Good luck for those who come back for this unforgettable experience. I should ask for money back.

Horrible experience. I had used them for '14 and '15 taxes which were pretty complicated and had partnership income. OK then, if a little clunky with the Q and A format. This year should have been super-simple (could probably do it by hand if I had the patience). But what a nightmare! It's like a totally different service. Very slow on the 16th and 17th of April. Then when I tried to file electronically (or print) on the morning of the 18th the whole system crashed. It first tried to sneak in a $79 "audit protection" fee. When I declined, and just went with the $37 option, it would not accept payment, so it would not send the return off to the IRS. Worse, the screen froze. The back button was inoperable. I had to go back to the very start of the Q and A nonsense to try the payment again. Failed all morning. So ended up filing an extension (first in my life), and will try tomorrow.

I keep seeing on TV all these tech companies talking about the cloud and "scalability". How they can handle even the heaviest volume with no problems. I gives TaxACT isn't a client. They should issue a warning: use us before April 10 or be sorry! Another problem: there is no place to deduct tax prep fees. Or investment expenses. I left those off since I had more than enough deductions, but still, it was not even covered in the Q and A. Or in the help topics. I remember last year's version was much more comprehensive. Oh, the customer help number? Fast busy signal since the 16th.

TaxACT is price gouging - I've been with them for years and I don't know if it was the coffee this morning that made me take note or the fact that they have changed practices, but my filing this year cost me $75 and here's why. I've been with them for years, they pull my info from prior years nicely. This service is $10 and I appreciate it and happily pay it. To file the state section it's an additional $38, OK I can deal with that. This year I hit $75 as I was forced into the more expensive product at an additional $37.

The price gouging scheme works as follows: they pull my prior info, that prior info has a tax form from my prior refund. In accordance with the law, I'm required to include my refund from the prior year in my taxable income for this year - makes sense. What doesn't make sense is that I need to purchase the more expensive version of their software this year to tack on an additional $700 in refunded income from the prior year's return. Are you kidding me? You're forcing all users who filed a return through your service through the more expensive product with this requirement and its price gouging.

My situation represents a typical use case and I can't stand that this just happened. You save data that you know you'll be forcibly using against me with no way out other than paying a premium to stay within the letter of the law - I utilized 0% of the product you just made me purchase through this aggressive policy setting, targeted at taking advantage of the 100% typical US citizen. $75 for a return is beyond nickel and diming and I've had the worst experience with this company.

Notes for star ranks below: impossible to locate a contact us on the site without fully logging out and navigating to the home page and sifting through their FAQ's until I can find a point of complaint entry. Ease of use is low - you are corralled into their pricing schemes which is not user friendly. Accuracy is low - you are misrepresenting your services and charging $37 additional dollars for 0% of the purchased product - if I break that down more accurately, you are charging for 1 of likely 200 aspects of use of the more expensive product... so maybe I'm getting .05% use of this product which DOUBLES your cost to file.

The 50% promotion is for half off of the regular price of the Federal return. The $10 promotion that you currently have is a lower price than the 50% promotion off of the regular priced Federal return." But the promotion says 50% off "already low locked in price" not off the regular price. Therefore, in 2015 I filed when I didn't really need to and it cost me about $50. I almost made the same mistake this year but I happened to go to the state directions myself and noticed that I did not even need to file. This mistake would have cost me close to $100 this year. The income threshold should have easily been identified by TaxACT. I feel like perhaps TaxACT is intentionally programmed to allow tax filers to file state taxes when it is totally unnecessary, so the company can collect the extra fee for filing state taxes. FAIL!

I've been a loyal client of this company for a number of years, but all that changed today, April 16, 2017 year when I filed my tax return. I was expecting the same customer experience and similar pricing, but little did I know that TaxACT has transformed from a company whom I trusted and respected into just another ripoff service. The first sign I should have figured out something was amiss was when there's this new charge of $10 to import last year's tax information. It was a minor annoyance, but I paid the $10 and imported my taxes. So far, so good, right? Wrong!! I proceeded to complete my taxes, and because my return is fairly simple, I just assumed that I would pay $15 or $20. All of that changed when I went back and added some gambling winnings I forgot to include.

When I entered gambling winnings, the scenario suddenly changes when a pop-up appears and indicates that I need to upgrade to the $37 edition because I added a form. No problem, so I proceed to pay the $37 and continue on my merry way. I proceed print off my federal form, but it occurs to me that I wasn't given the choice to print my state return. So, I go back and check the box to print my state return and another pop-up suddenly and indicates that I need to pay an additional $38 to print my state return. Now, I realize that I'm being sucked down a rabbit hole, but still think it's a mistake because I trust this company.

So, I proceed to contact TaxAct and explain the situation to the representative. To my surprise, she informs me that it isn't a mistake and that's what I'll have to pay. I inform her that last year, I paid $9.99 and $6.00 for filing my federal and state taxes, respectively, and ask her what is the reason for the dramatic price increase. She couldn't offer me an adequate explanation, other than the prices had increased. Now, I'm a reasonable person and I don't have a problem with companies increasing their prices from time to time if it's reasonable. But, to increase the price for a generic service from $15.99 to $75 is a total rip-off.

It reminded me about how the drug companies are ripping off customers. Now, if there was something unique or proprietary about their product, I might be able to understand a moderate price increase. But, a five-fold increase is unwarranted and unconscionable, and I don't understand how this once trusted company can justify ripping people off to this extent. Because today is April 16, and I don't have time to look at alternative providers, I chalked it up to a lesson learned. But, it's sad to see a company that I trusted for so many years turn into just another rip-off service that has designed its software to knowingly lead customers down a rabbit of paying more and more fees. Had I known upfront that I could potentially being paying up to $75 for a simple return, I never would have went down that rabbit hole. Good luck, TaxACT. You have lost me a client for life.

I have always utilized Taxact online to prepare not only my taxes, but also my son's and a personal friend's taxes. I always paid $15.00 for my son's simple return until this year it increased to $27.00. Not really a big deal as I do realize prices sometimes (usually) do increase from year-to-year. I prepared my friend's taxes this year in early February. Since she is a home owner the fee was approximately $40.00 for both federal and state.

I waited until two days ago to prepare mine and my husband's taxes and mistakenly thought the fee would be the same as my friend. Nothing was noted about price during the whole process of filling in our forms but I stupidly assumed that the fees would be $40.00 as my friend paid two months earlier for the same exact type of return. Well when the program got to the point where I needed to make payment, that $40.00 went up to $75.00 ($37.00 for Federal and $38.00 for State)! I didn't even think to check the pricing after only a two month period and on not one of their pages did it even state the pricing.

I don't remember the initial link I clicked on to log into TaxACT but I know that it didn't state this new pricing. At that point I wasn't willing to start over again with another tax filing service and reluctantly paid the $75.00. I'm sure TaxACT hopes everyone does this. It's pretty crappy that they almost double their fees within two months for the same year's filing (they probably feel that they can gouge last minute filers)! I won't go back to using Taxact again!

I've used Tax Act for 4+ years. This year they added a hidden $15 charge to the federal version at the end, for a "PLUS EDITION". I sat on the phone for over 30 minutes and tried to email with zero customer service support. Bottom line is I was stuck as I did not want to redo my entire tax form. I am going to cancel the overpayment via a credit card dispute. Save yourself a headache and use another service in 2017.

We need to talk to someone for clarification. The Help does not say what is enabled/disabled for possible deduction or to correct or add Forms. It is frustrating and no help on phone line: 319 373 3600.

Yes they're right. Deceptive as a presidential candidate. I used it several years with satisfaction and it's different this year. I can't see a return to check without sending 47 dollars. All you can do is enter information. Filing, printing, viewing, generating any kind of compilation of the entered information will cost you at least 47 dollars. It doesn't tell you this until spending about two days muddling with their awkward process. Sucker!

Here is the exact quote from the TaxACT site, "New to TaxAct? Get our Premium service for FREE." I used the downloaded version last year with no problems (something like $19 or $29, can't remember exactly). This year the downloaded program was something like $75, so I decided to use the "Free" online version. You merrily enter data until you try to save, then you can't do it until you sent them $15 (no mention of that requirement when you start). Ok, I sent the 15 bucks.

Then I tried to enter data directly by calling up a specific form. Guess what?! There is no way to call up a specific form, even one supported by the program, only the question and answer method. So you can't enter anything directly on a form. A pop up now tells you that if you want to access a form, you need a more expensive version than the one you are using and please send more cash. At this point I quit, wrote off the $15 I already sent and bought TurboTax, which did everything it advertised. TaxACT lost me as a customer with their lack of transparency and what I call actual deception.

I used TaxACT last because it had features TurboTax did not. When I was unable to download an injured spouse form, I called the listed number for TaxACT. There was no answer. I called the pro number for TaxACT. They answered immediately. They refused to help me. Told me the other number was available, I called both numbers repeatedly requesting help offering to buy pro version. Anything just to get it done. They gave me no help. I had to print my forms and download my injured spouse form from IRS to add to my taxes. For this lousy service I had to pay $73.00. Now I get to wait months longer for my return. Thanks TaxACT.

This company over promises and under delivers. They have "tax professionals" who are supposed to assist when users run into an issue. Forget it. If you plan to do it yourself then you better realize that you will really be doing it all yourself. If there is a problem with their program it will be your problem because no one will escalate and provide an answer in any reasonable period of time. When I sent a question in February I was supposed to get an answer in 48 hours or less. It took six days for a reply that was not helpful at all. The rep hired to give assistance that I just spoke with couldn't remember anything about the forms related to my inquiry despite my repeating the form numbers, sections, and line numbers multiple times during a conversation lasting more than an hour. During the hour she put me on hold several times because she could not find the sources related to the problem which I pointed out was possibly a problem with TaxACT.

That TaxACT pro said she could not find any information on a form, section, and line I could see clearly was present on my printable form. She did not understand the relationship among three common forms and how input on one affects the resulting numbers on another. Really? I am not a tax pro and wouldn't try to get a job assisting customers with their issues, but my ability to listen and understand a problem as well as my level of comprehension is 10X what I encountered when I spoke with the TaxACT representative.

I called again after that horrible experience and had help from a representative who at least was semi capable of remembering and referencing the issues posed. However, there are only two reps who I have ever spoken with over several years who were able to assist. Next year goodbye to the music and the long, long waits on hold. Goodbye to the automated message about how their circuits are overloaded so they must disconnect me. Hello good accountant. Hello taxes done in a sensible amount of time and done before April 15 too.

Then today is April 2, 2017 and the New York State forms are not ready for printing. Wake up TaxACT. You're gonna lose a lot of customers this year.

My experience may not apply to everyone because my tax return was fairly simple and straightforward. I'm a recent college grad filing for the first time and I'm single, don't own a home, don't have kids or any dependents, etc. and I took the standard deduction. So for me, TaxACT worked great and it was free for both the federal and state return - something that isn't true of H&R Block and something I didn't realize until I had already inputted all my information in their system and was ready to file. The numbers matched up with the taxes, credits, income etc that I had in H&R Block so I was pretty comfortable with its accuracy. If you have fairly simple return I would recommend TaxACT.

The prepayment "lock-in" is fraught with difficulties. They purposely don't associate the info to your account which means it is next to impossible to use. It is a nice way for them to make extra money. To use pre-payment you have go into the "Professional Program, choose preparer" and create a "practice account" - Of course I got this info after spending an hour on it. Nice, very intuitive TaxACT. I think the overall program, absent prepayment is pretty good though - I just feel cheated out of my lock down price.

This is the first review I've ever written. THIS is the worst experience I've ever had with tax filing. As of now I went in circles with their forms for 4 days. I have written for help. I finally reached someone today by phone. HELP? Not so much. I have so far spent 4 days. I've entered information time after time as it takes you in circles. I finally (thought/think) I filed tax, had confirmation, paid my Federal taxes by Credit card...errors there which were taken care of. Assumed those taxes were done by efile. Still could not get my State taxes done. Did them time after time but they don't print until they are paid for. No place could I find to pay. Only to start reentering information.

Phone call did very little good. I did manage to PAY THEM and to print a form. Couldn't efile so must do by mail. AND on top of that I find that the Federal Forms have not been filed either. Only the money sent. No efile. NOW money is separate from form and I have to make copies of my papers and send them in. BEWARE of using this program. I attempted to insist that the person that was 'suppose' to be seeing me thru this stay on the line until it was settled and complete. Don't expect that as they push you off the phone saying you can do it. It was not done. I am so frustrated. I took 2 days off my work job to work on this. Yes I am unhappy with them that is. Not going to let it wreck the rest of this day though.

I've used TurboTax (great product) for 15 years, however it doesn't support Chrome or Windows XP, so I needed a product that would. Lots of great reviews on TaxACT. Then I used it and have hated it every second I had to use it. It doesn't link forms, the navigation is horrible, and I'm sure this junk pile of software is made in Taiwan. It won't print all worksheets, it doesn't explain what it's doing, and maintains no sense of order so you really know where you are. It takes about 10-12 key strokes just to look at a form. I'm spoiled by Intuit - TurboTax, but I'll never use TaxACT again.

I used TaxACT for prior two years with no issues. But this year is quite a difference as the other customers experienced. Not only the higher price, but the software was changed (mostly in negative direction). The worse experience is I e-filed my return three times, with systems saying it was successfully submitted but it never got filed (I never received confirmation and when I contacted service rep I was told my return was not filed at all). Still working with TaxACT to de-bug but no resolution yet. Past two years process was very easy and smooth (I got confirmation in less than 10 minutes, but this year it's been over 25 hours!). Do not recommend TaxACT.

This is my 3rd and FINAL year using TaxACT. The first two years were relatively easy and helpful. Next year, I will go back to using paper and pen. It is free and takes the same amount of time. It was very cumbersome and time-consuming getting started this year. In the middle of filing, I got interrupted by a request to add cookies to this site, which I didn't want to use. I had to wait until the next day to get rid of this request. The actual filing was awkward too. Getting in touch with help is also difficult. I thought I was getting this done for free, but in the end, the federal was $27.00 and they wanted $33 for the state. You don't find this out until the very end when you plan to file. It definitely was not worth the money. I compare this to the TV commercials for Credit Karma Tax where all tax sites want money for filing. Maybe I'll try Credit Karma next year. I definitely feel deceived.

The two previous years were a great experience using TaxACT but this year was a very frustrating nightmare. I kept getting a bunch of grayed out boxes. When I would call Tech Support, they would suggest fixes and send me to try only to have to come back and eventually learn I was not the only person with this problem. The system was crashing and they didn't know why -- possibly too many users, try back later.

Later after I finally got past the crashes and over two hours on hold, I was trying to get Tax Support because Tech Support said they couldn't help me and they couldn't transfer me. I had to call the same number back and select another line to go into yet another queue. Only problem was it kept answering and telling me that they were too busy and had to disconnect me. I COULDN'T EVEN GET IN A QUEUE TO WAIT FOR HELP.

I spent hours trying to find out why Royalty information that was in box 3 kept going to 0 on the form. I would check the form and go back only for it to be 0. Finally, I ran the review to see if it would shed any light because Tech Support said it wasn't their problem and I would need to talk to Tax Support -- the one that wouldn't even let me into a queue for help. The review gave it a red alert and finally told me that items in certain boxes on the 1099 had to be entered MANUALLY but did not say how that could be accomplished.

After unsuccessfully trying to get Tax Support for help, I went to my accountant friend who helped me find a way to input the information. REALLY!!! Why does it "accept" information and then do nothing with it? When it does tell you there is a problem, it doesn't tell you how to solve it and obviously Support this year was next to nonexistent. Extremely frustrated this year. Hoping next year is better. If NOT, I may be trying H&R Block which my son swears by.

Adding my voice to the chorus of those already here: TaxAct is great when you're going to be filing the equivalent of the 1040EZ. Any further forms are a mess. Nearly the first of April, and I too am getting the same game and lie for about the third time running, about how "New York State needs to approve the forms for printing before we can remove the watermark"... reading between the lines, clearly a true statement would instead be, "We've not got any internal staffers handy who know how to code, in order to take the "Do Not Print" legend off of the tax return of multiple states." (If I can't print it, honestly, what did I pay these people for? So I can find a blank PDF - A compliant version and type over my answers laboriously side-by-side from their interface?)

Their help answers in the filing widget process are non-existent - I had better luck following the publicly available answers of other users and techs at TurboTax - and it's a round-robin mystery, how to find the link to amend a form, or what happens when you get to the end of the "amendment" process, as TaxAct is too cheap to code a separate specific pathfinder with discrete language involving amendments, instead preferring to chase you through every one of their manual widget Q&A a second-plus time around as part of the "amendment" process. Next year I'll try a different provider for certain, and I might ask TaxAct for money back this time around, if they never set it up so that I can print the NYS tax forms.

I've been filing with them for years. Never any problem until last year... when they wouldn't acknowledge my locked in rate of $14.00, for all returns, (that was a semi-premium cost). I found my receipt, (from them), & they agreed to reduce my rate to the $14.00. I locked in again for this year, (I did it last year), but they either didn't send a receipt, or I misplaced it. I think it was for $17.00 for everything. Now... they said I never locked it in. So the fee is $60.00. They could really care less.

I have used TaxACT for 3 years to prepare several family trust returns. Easy to use first 2 years. This year has been a disaster. Cannot review entire return unless you print and pay $60 and if you discover mistake it costs another $60 to fix. Could do multiple returns for one fee, now it's $60 for each return. Price was $30 last year so it's doubled price with inability to review entire return with all schedules. Also last year I could import 1099-B, now I have to manually enter all transactions. Total garbage. Last year using TaxACT. Very unhappy.

I rarely write reviews but I feel so strongly - this year, costs doubled, donation assistant remained offline and most significantly, I was unknowingly pushed to a 3rd party to be a middleman for tax payment to the IRS. I filed federal and state together in an identical way, as I have done for the last 20 years with TAXACT, yet this year when checking status, I got a cryptic note saying a 3rd party would work my payment. The 3rd party exacted a fee for the service. Once figured out, I logged into the IRS directly and paid through the website without a fee and saved the $32 fee. I don't like being tricked, I don't like features not working, I do not like a price jump for no other causal value other than greed. This is my first year using TaxAct Professional. While the system is somewhat cumbersome to navigate, the end product was fine and e-filing was easy. For the first few months everything was fine, then my clients with daycare and other business use of home were ready for this year's tax return. Unfortunately, TaxAct professional cannot handle Form 8829. This is the first software I have used that does not include a Form 4562 attached to Form 8829. Usually you can enter a client's depreciation schedule into the return and it properly completes the Business Use of Home. Not with TaxAct - as a result you need to utilize a work around and paper file the return. This is not acceptable for a company that advertising "grow your practice" using their software. They have just eliminated a segment of the market that is growing. Unless your client uses the new simplified calculation, you are out of luck.

Since TurboTax was able to handle this scenario, I mistakenly assumed any program being marketed to professionals would also be able to properly complete the form and e-file the return. This is a major strike against the software. Looks as though I may need to research another new software for next year. Support estimates response time at 2-3 business days. After 5 days I sent an email asking for a status update. Very poor follow through on their support network.
