I have a positive account balance on their site, but they refuse to send me a check unless I send them a hard copy via snail mail of my bank statement showing the payment cleared my bank (again, even though it shows on their site). I've reported them to our state's attorney general. When on a call with them, they would not help me speak to the escalations department, and their phone system is set up to funnel customers away from speaking to real people. They are not set up to serve the customer.

I got a "zero interest for 18 months" deal on my new AC system through Synchrony. When I logged onto my account for the first time I found Synchrony had assessed a $29 "activation fee" on my account. I could have charged the AC unit on an existing credit card and then paid it off; I would have been better off doing that than paying the "activation fee." When I called to politely ask that the fee be removed the rep refused. She'd obviously had dealt with similar requests before because I could tell she was reading off a prepared script. In other words, Synchrony knows that their customers don't like the "activation fee," but they just don't care.

I would love to know what MBA was hired to help Chevron transition to Synchrony credit card services. When they made the switch nothing works, the service is horrible, you can't update info on their website if your phone number changes, they put you through hell to verify yourself again, then their system still won't recognize. Bottom line, I don't believe this is a one off based on the horrible reviews I have found - message to Chevron - your gas is the same as everyone else (which means you have to compete on service) and you're losing this battle!

Synchrony Bank recently renewed my CD without sending me a renewal reminder. I called them and spoke to their manager Kevin. I asked Kevin to close the CD and place the balance into a savings account. He flatly refused unless I would pay a $500 early withdrawal penalty. They offer great interest rates but their deceptive practices make them a poor choice for banking especially for seniors like myself.

First- do not do business with Synchrony. Second- you do not get a customer service representative that has a very good understanding of the English language, then when you ask to speak to a supervisor, they put you on hold forever and you end up hanging up. Trying to explain a problem does not work to your benefit either in written or verbal format. We had a problem with a payment we made early when we were going out of town for an extended period (Shame on me. No good deed goes unpunished.). Synchrony failed to credit the payment as one of our regular monthly payments, I guess they thought we were just sending them money for the fun of it. Then they charged us a late fee and interest. Discussed with a representative (obviously did not understand what I was talking about) because they gave us a credit.
Then later, we get a letter from the company. Still charged us interest and a late fee after they did their research on the payment/credit conveniently identified as they gave us credit twice (the early payment and customer service credit). It was not because we asked for the credit, the customer rep did it on their own because they did not understand the English language. Then we wrote a second letter with a breakdown of the monthly payments and check clearing dates in a nice table format for anyone to understand, all were on time and earlier than due date. The company responded and agreed with this letter, they were so generous to refund the late charge in the “interest of good customer relations.” However, they never removed the interest charges.
We are now into our third letter after 6 months and still have not received the interest charges back as a credit. Still have not heard back on the third letter yet it was sent in early January. However, if it takes a fourth letter, I’m going to write it and more until they give me the credit for falsely charging me interest (I wonder if they can legally do this). Make sure you review your statements monthly whether you have an electronic account or hardcopy. Do not let them bamboozle you, keep accurate records of your payments and don’t give up. Finally- Their customer service is horrible!

I have had several credit cards managed by Synchrony Financial for several years and have just now read the reviews. Wish I had read the reviews before. Apparently they have the right to reduce and/or close your account arbitrarily due to their credit scoring system. This system gives no warning and can cause your account to be over the limit and they do not care. I have noticed many that say they are managing their account correctly, but the practices of Synchrony cause their account to appear as if they are not. Why would a financial institution want to purposely damage a customer's credit? Bad business practice.
I personally am going to pay my accounts off and not use them. I have other bank cards and will stick to them and raise my credit lines to accommodate my life. Please avoid Synchrony at all costs. Pay attention to the bank that is funding whatever card you are applying for and do not apply. There are other bank cards that you can get and use at these stores that are far better.

They lowered my credit limit causing my credit to decline. DO NOT GET AN ACCOUNT WITH THIS RIDICULOUS PLACE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. They are in financial trouble.

I opened 15 month CD a month ago. I then wanted to access my account online. That was impossible because they verify the identity by calling or sending the code to the phone numbers obtained from Public Records. There are my old numbers either non-existing or from my old employer. I called Bank twice that I cannot register online. I was told that I will receive an "override" by mail, but the month passed and I did not receive any. Today I was told the same and also that the bank can only send letters twice a week due to Covid !!! And that many customers have the same issue because most of the cell phones are not in Public Records. Bank has my recent cell phone number which they wanted while opening my CD over that very phone. But they cannot add it to their records once they got my money. That system is archaic and user-unfriendly.
I requested the cancellation of my CD and will be charged a PENALTY for early closing in the amount of 6 months' interest! I cannot work with this bank, they are not helping me with it, and when I want to terminate that "relationship" because of their system they penalize ME instead of apologizing and trying to keep the customer, whose money they took after several minutes phone conversation.
The unbelievable archaic system, unbelievable, that I am penalized for their inability to let me access online. Anyway, I decided to pay the penalty and get out of that bank. How soon I will receive my money back I do not know. Maybe Covid affects this Bank's transfers too, not just sending letters. I have never experienced something like that with any other bank or business, even doing it with other countries. I give ZERO stars to Synchrony Bank.

No matter how hard you're trying to fix your credit, you pay on time, you do what you're supposed to do, you try to use your card and it shows you the charges have been put on your card and then you call and they tell you, "No ma'am we decreased your credit limit to $250." What do I need your card for a card for I had $500? So therefore this card will be cut up and thrown in the trash. Do not use this company. Pick Capital One.

Have two cards and Synchrony is destroying my credit by decreasing my credit line, for no reason. I'm being responsible by not foolish spending and paying the credit card down. They say I have been paying on time but, decreasing my limit at the same. Mix messages, so do not get a card with Synchrony, if you want to keep improving your credit score!!!! Then they will tell you to call the credit bureau to see if they can help you knowing they has nothing to do with their policy of the company.

This bank services my loan for an instrument. I set up auto pay when making my first payment and got a confirmation email. Not true, called when it never occurred. They said I must set it up separately even though they sent an email saying it would occur. Website down often. I believe they are trying to trick me into paying interest (2 years are interest free) by making it very difficult to make payments. I have never had any problems making a payment on an account before. My auto pay was set up for the 11th yesterday and hasn't come out of my bank account yet. I do not trust them at all and recommend avoiding them. I have banked in many places before and have a mortgage and an 800+ credit score, this bank is scummy and I am going to be very careful with this account and pay it off early.

One of the most ridiculous places I've ever witnessed. Their support is the worst I've ever experienced. I paid off my account with a Cashier's Check - simple right? Well... I then got a noticed that someone opened a dispute on my account for a missing check. I NEVER initiated the dispute - and their support just kept telling me I was the one to open it. Okay, I got to the bank and get an exact photocopy of the Cashier Check. The copy shows that Synchrony Bank stamped the back of the check and deposited it into their bank. I submit that as proof... clear as day that they clearly accepted it, stamped it, and deposited. They respond by saying it was not valid enough proof to prove the payment was made. I am not sure how it gets more valid than a photo of the actual check with their signature on it.
Here I am... months later, still working to resolve this issue with their mismanagement of money. Yes, this is a bank that loses money and appears to have no adequate tracking system to find "lost" money. Each time I contact support, they never know what's going on and I have to repeat myself over and over again to re-explain the issue. Not only do they not track money adequately, they clearly have no tracking of support contacts either. What a scam. Incredibly frustrating.

There are many issues with Synchrony online savings bank. I just found out there is a limit of $100,000 transfer where they put a hold on any transfers for 30 days. There is also a daily limit of $25,000 on transfers. Also, CDs auto renew and there is no way online to specify you don't want auto renewal. You have to actually call 30 days before to not have it auto renew. It is basically a way to keep you locked in to Synchrony.

Had a Lowe's credit card and Care Credit Card both issued by Synchrony bank. Just out of the blue one day they cancel my cards (they said my credit score went down and they have a right to do this). This was after I used it at the dentist. On the Care Credit Card I used at my dentist I needed emergency dental work. 3 Teeth were cracked and front 2 were broken off. Dentist charged the card for the whole amount of $3600 in March 2021 and stated with care credit we have them pay the full amount upfront. I was told before leaving that The (my) dentist had retired I thought he was off that day. And was told it would be billed to the dentist that helped me get things in place, to put 3 crowns on my teeth the next visit. They never called me to tell me my new crowns were ready. I called them 1x a week for I believe 4 months nothing.
In the meantime another Covid-19 outbreak, my husband passed away and then my sister which threw me to left field. I finally got a call back mid January 2022 stating the practice was sold and patients went along with the new business practice. I said, "Hey they took molds of my teeth and I was to come in to get them placed." Them: "Oh we're not going to be open for business until later Feb 2022 - April 2022 and it will be under new owner management."
In the meantime I'm making payments on the care credit card and they are charging me because they canceled my credit with them synchrony and I been paying a $44 a month late fee, a not paid in full promotion offer of I believe it was 60 months. Then I start getting over the limit charges, late fees and a humongous interest rate to boot. Plus they hit my credit report! I've contacted customer service and have them a verbal dispute. Nothing updated that was in Jan 2022. They need to cancel the $3600 dentist charge and have the previous dentist reimburse synchrony back. NOT ME I didn't get a medical service from them!
They should (synchrony bank care credit) pay me back by reimbursing what I've paid to them and their late fees, over limit whatever fees and bad credit report and give me all my payments back regarding this $3600 purchase I never received! I now have a huge hit from them on my credit report. I didn't receive any notice from the dentist office and this is just insane! I will not pay $3600 to you for something I never got fixed!? I want Reimbursed for every payment I made already, PLUS THEIR TACK ON FEES! I CAN'T EVEN LOG INTO MY ACCOUNT TO CONTACT THEM AT THEY SUGGEST. To top it off this WAS emergency dental work. Took my credit card charged it and didn't do nothing! They didn't even send me a patient any news on what was going on!
Summary:... March 2020 I was charged $3600. Contacted them they wouldn't help me. I want this taken off my credit report and it marked paid on time. Consumer closed. Since I contacted them. I believe they are now sending to collections! Please help! I'm a disabled widow and this is clearly fraud and extortion on a disabled widow. I they have 30 days until Match 30, 2022 to correct this insurance fraud and mail me my money back in form of a check with the late fees, Over limit, promotion fees. I was never told by synchrony what the% of interest and all that other stuff I was supposed to owe them?

So I pay it off, card gets stolen, try and dispute charges for fraud, I CANNOT dispute ANYTHING AT ALL, they provide me with prov. credit! Wow so nice of them, 2 days later, it was found in consumer's favor. 10+ HRS ON PHONE WITH THEM?? All to dispute 2K in charges.
The person on the other end, Kept saying to speak with the primary cardholder, which is me, and said "From the notes of the account your not the primary cardholder" PLEASE?? Not to mention THE VARIOUS TIME I HAVE TO VERIFY MY identity!! I had to send 4 documents when I moved to show that I'm still me!?! Synchrony Bank and their assorted credit cards - unfortunately also associated with the Amazon Prime card - is the worst financial institution I have had the displeasure of doing business with. I'm not a disgruntled customer that owes them money, I'm a disgruntled customer who has had absolutely no luck with their customer service or with payment disputes. I am still waiting, as of 2/11/2022, for a chargeback to show to my account that the merchant processed on January 31st, 2022. Their websites are a nightmare of popup chat boxes and surveys. Will I use you again? No. Will I recommend you to a friend? No. I might recommend you to an enemy, though. There are much better credit offers, much better banks out there. Do some research and look at their reviews - Synchrony is terrible.

Synchrony Bank is not a very good lender to do business with. They close accounts and reduce credit limits without notice or reason. I have two cards with them. One paid off with a zero balance and the other with a balance. I was paying my bill early and they would still charged me a late fee even though the payment was made before my due date so every payment that would have lowered my balance they would add a late fee in the same amount as my payment. Then they lowered my credit limit. My JCPenney card has been paid off for months and I stopped using it because of what they was doing with my payments so they closed my account and tried to say I was late 5 times on my payments when the payments actually was made on or before the due date.
We got sick with Covid and my job shut down for a few months because of Covid at the end of 2021. I'm a traveling nurse so I called and ask did they have a Covid hardship program available to stay current. They said no. I asked if I could make a smaller payment on my account. They said no. If I did I would still get a later fee. They are not willing to work with their customers and are violating our consumer rights. When I didn't make the payment they wanted they lowered my credit limit again. I had 583.00 still available to use on a 2000.00 dollar limit. I had 1476.95 charged for medical reasons. They lowered my balance to 1530.00 which implies I have used most of my credit limit so it dropped my credit score again because they reported that to the credit bureaus which is false.
I offered to pay a smaller amount on my payments until I got caught back up. They declined. Before January I had never been late on this account yet they were giving me late fees for payment made the day before or on my due date. I thought Synchrony was a good lender to do business with and they are not so beware before opening a credit line with them. They have caused my good credit to decrease because of the things they did unfairly to me and my accounts.

First of all their billing cycle is completely different than any other issuer. 38 day? You have a date due for payment & 8 days later the closing date which makes it difficult to manage your spending. Second, the phone number for customer service is in very fine & faint print along an edge of the card. It’s so difficult to read, I misdialed four times before I got it right. I’ve had previous issues with this private placement card issuer in the past & it seems to continue. I think Verizon should find another issuer of their branded credit card to avoid being identified with this odd & mediocre bank.

I have had Care Credit with Synchrony Bank for a couple years now to help pay for eye glasses and dental procedures. The things my insurance doesn't cover....which is a lot. I was making my care credit payments, and all my credit card payments on time and usually double the minimum amounts. I had my card paid halfway down and was planning to use it on another expensive dental procedure, when they decided to reduce my limit without so much as a warning.
Why bother offering a credit account for health related things, and then have such strict credit regulations that you have to take it right back? They also said my credit score was 100 points less than it was. I checked my credit immediately after receiving the letter. which means they had to have waited several month after reviewing my credit to reduce my limit. I'm still not fully understanding. And of course no one can help me in their 'customer service'. Would not recommend this card Care Credit Synchrony Bank to anyone now unless you have health concerns that can wait. Which is sad, because for awhile they were my only saving grace for when I got a toothache suddenly.

I have an upcoming procedure and will have to reapply now. This will impact my credit score since my credit will be ran again and it'll show up as a new account on my credit report for the next year. I understand reviewing accounts for non-usage after a certain time period but there needs to be some type of notification sent by Synchrony as a courtesy.

I am a disabled senior and live off of the interest I get from my savings. I opened 2 large CDs a few months ago and was told after I opened them that they changed their policy about sending me my monthly interest. I now had to call them every month and request it. I waited 2 months so I could accrue enough to warrant them sending out a check and was going to use the money pay expenses when I traveled to a hospital in another state. When I called they put me through the 3rd degree with security, which I did not mind, but the lady then told me to get my CDs are read information off of them to her. When I protested she locked down my accounts. She told me the only way I could get them opened again was to get a cell phone and take a one minute video of myself and send it to her.
When I told her I did not have a cell phone in my office since I can't use one with a pacemaker she would not give me an alternative method to open my "locked down" account, she vindictively locked down? She told me if I did not want to take a "selfie" of myself, then I would have to wait until she sent me a "letter" so I could call back and read what it said to her?? When the letter came I called customer service and closed my accounts and lost all the interest plus a penalty for not wishing to let insult me any longer. I was going to use the money to help pay for my medical trip this week.
My wife was a federal agent with the DOD so I am well aware how important security is, but this was literally vindictive since I questioned the whole self video thing??? I might add, that woman told me that I would have to do this every month if I wanted my interest. I hope others are treated better than I was. Every other bank I deal with sends a notice a month in advance. The cost of closing it 2 days after the grace period was over $400. Needless to say, I've closed every other account as they mature. I would have renewed it for 12 months, but not 5 years at the current rates. As I've closed the other accounts I had to do it by phone, and it took at least 10-15 minutes, mostly on hold. As soon as we found this, we paid the balance through another bank to a zero balance. They closed my account due to the returned payment. They closed the account with a zero balance. They also closed the account with THOUSANDS of dollars in reward points to use on Amazon.
After hours on the phone, customer service (3 different managers) assured me they could get it resolved with a letter from my banking institution showing how the merger caused the situation, and through no fault of my own. We faxed and emailed the letter from PNC's letterhead taking responsibility, but they refuse to refund the points. Of course, there's no getting on the phone with their "Internal Inquiry specialists" and their frontline managers have no power to make any changes and just say how sorry they are that I'm in the situation. This has caused my credit score to plummet from the high 600s to just below 500. Anytime I get ahead, they lower another limit which makes me look like I’m leaving my cards maxed out. I am very frustrated with them, and will gladly close out the cards as soon as they are paid off. Zero stars.

Apparently Synchrony hasn’t practice where they randomly pull your credit score and reduce you credit effecting utilization and credit score. While this may been a lawful practice it definitely unethical and it has terminated many of my relationships with companies like Chevron, Amazon, Crate and Barrel just to name a few. I refused to do any business with any companies associated with Synchrony Financial. I really wish I could give zero stars.

I just want to know how they stay in business if this is their credo. I opened my first card through Synchrony Bank in 2019 through a 0% financing deal at a certain furniture store. I did everything right. Made my payments on time. Last month they started closing all my accounts and in turn damaged my credit score tremendously due to the high credit limits held with them. I tried contacting customer service. I waited to speak to a real person without success. Finally got into contact with someone through online chat and they simply stated that my account was closed and could not be reopened. They said they couldn’t give me a specific reason even though they are the ones who closed my account. I would not recommend having a card with their bank and if you do, tread very lightly. Definitely don’t have multiple.

My husband and I are in our 70s and retired. My husband takes care of paying the bills. Recently, he missed a payment on one of our Synchrony cards. We agreed to let them cancel that card in order to set up a payment plan. Most of our credit cards are with synchrony and are all current with no past due amounts ever. Yesterday, I had a Stent placed due to blockage in an artery. I had counted on my credit cards to help pay for necessities so that I can pay the high cost of blood thinners that I will need to keep the Stent from becoming blocked. Our income is too high for assistance, but with inflation it's not enough to make ends meet. When I arrived home, to my surprise they had decreased the limit on all of my credit cards to the amount that I owe. That's what I call kicking people when they are down.

You should never open an account with this bank. You will have nightmares when it comes to payments. They will process a payment and never update your account balance. Then when you go check, you will be under the impression that since the payment has been processed and withdrawn from your account, you actually still owe the balance that is shown. Needless to say, you have now overpaid your account and they will not initiate a refund to your bank, they will only send you a check with the usual 10 business day turnaround time.
So let's examine this, they take extra, purposely it seems, then do not want to pay you in the same timely fashion they withdrew the money. An absolute criminal tactic. Think about it, they do this to 1000s a day and get away with having more than what is rightfully theirs. There should be some law firm that should highly consider starting a class action lawsuit against this criminal practice.

This made my credit score drop immensely. But the icing on the cake was when they reduced my available credit to where my balance was within $20-$50 of the new limit. Synchrony makes it very difficult to pay on your promotional purchases through them. I was originally paying more than the minimum payment toward my account as to pay off the promotional balance so I do not incur the deferred interest. I then noticed after a few payments that anything OVER the minimum due each month does not go toward the promotional balance, but instead to the standard purchase balance if you have one. I called Synchrony to ask them about this, and after a wait of about 20 minutes I was told that the only way to have those extra funds directed toward the promotional balance is to call them, each and every time you make a payment, and tell them how to apply these funds. So you have to make a 20-30 minute phone call each month to accomplish this.
In my opinion, this is their way to make this more difficult to pay off, so some consumers will be hit with the interest. Not very consumer friendly. Another issue I had is the first number listed as customer service on their website is a spambot number to get a free medical device. I called twice to make sure. The actual Synchrony customer service number is a few lines below that one.

We have had this Synchrony Account since June 2017. Most of this time things went smooth, however when trying to resolve an Auto Pay double dip into our bank account for our payment, the procedure to get a human on the phone was insanely disrespectful, inconsiderate and absolutely nerve racking. The Corporate leaders of this company have no consideration for the time, effort and energy it takes in the world we live in to stay on an automated twisted conundrum of a phone call just to accomplish 1 goal. Then to have a human finally answer the other end of the line just to read off a script and only give robotic answers as if they have no authority whatsoever to make any decisions. Quite controlling, don't you think?
Corporate America at it's best... control one's thoughts, actions & outcomes for the "Almighty Bottom Line Profit!" Next, just to tell a customer who has good credit, and long standing account records with no missed payments, no late payments that they have the option to close their account and do nothing to resolve the issue at hand. The robot that we spoke to on the phone claimed that it was a recorded call, I hope this is true, because that is what subpoenas are for, right? End Result: We closed our account. Waiting for a "Check" to be issued for the double dip payment they took out of our account. We stopped payment on the ACH/Autopay, now they can wait on our "Check" to come in the mail. It never pays to fleece your source of income. It will backfire on you. Shame on Synchrony & other banks like them. I don't know about their savings or banking account, but be very wary when purchasing from other companies that finance through Synchrony. I bought a mattress from Mattress Firm last year and instead of charging to my own credit card that I pay off every month, they just "had" to charge it to a separate Synchrony account. Before I go any further, I am well aware that this is partially my fault, but I haven't been out of my own for very long as I had just graduated from college and have little to no experience in making my own large purchases.
Thinking I had paid it off via my own credit card (which had a few thousand dollars at the time from getting an apartment and buying appliances and other necessities for it), I had forgotten that the saleswomen at the Mattress Firm mentioned they needed to go through Synchrony to finance the purchase, even though she took my credit card anyways. Thinking it was paid off later that month due to my own misunderstanding, I thought it was paid off later that month on my personal credit card account.
It wasn't until I applied for a new place and was almost REJECTED for "severe level of charge-offs". I couldn't find out why until I got my detailed screening report back and saw that I owed over $1,000 to Synchrony. I tried logging on to the Synchrony website as well as Mattress Firm, but I could not find the purchase anywhere. Keep in mind, I was not given a card or account # at the store, just a brief mention of this "Synchrony bank", so no real easy way to pay off the purchase. After that, I never received an email, call or text about any overdue payments, or warning that it was about to be for that matter.
I have a high paying job now and consider myself fairly financially responsible. No other payments have been overdue except for a few minor credit card balances that were a couple days late. I always thought this is why my credit score wasn't higher than I expected, along with the fact that my account is still fairly new. This experience however, has screwed me over. I now owe my new apartment complex a "conditional credit payment" of $655 because I had not known the mattress I bought a year ago was overdue, nor did I have easy access to pay it off until I called their customer service and had to pay extra for late fees. I'll be lucky to get a VA loan in the near future as well from this lousy company. Make sure you do your due diligence whenever you hear "Synchrony bank" come out of a salesman's mouth and try to pay in cash when you can. That's just my 2 cents.

They would not give an immediate ok to my application which was a mystery to me. They said they would check into my credit and give a response in 7-10 days. I might add I had a similar problem when I tried to purchase tires at Discount Tire on a tire promotion.
At that time since they would not okay instant credit so I could purchase during the promotion I contacted synchrony and asked what the problem was. They could not give me an answer so I told them to close the account. Back to Lowes I received a letter from Synchrony stating they would not give me credit at Lowes Because I have an existing account with them. I do not. That account was closed 2-3 years but even if I did have an open account thru Discount Tire how does that affect an account at Lowes if there is no balance on the account. I since have done some research on Synchrony Financial and have discovered they have the 3 highest rate of complaints, have settled a class action suit, have had various legal complaints and complaints in general.
It is amazing to me that organizations continue to use this financial organization that has such poor business practices and customer support. I might add I contacted Lowes and told them I would never do business with them again. I might add I went to Home Depot to purchase the same refrigerator on credit and was approved in 5 seconds. Again with a credit rating in the 800s it is an insult to be denied credit.

Whatever you do, DON'T ever use any Synchrony affiliated credit cards. I've been lied to by foreign representatives. Treated rudely and without respect by them, while I, personally am ALWAYS polite and friendly, even when unhappy with something. The company farmed its service department out to the other side of the globe, while American citizens were out of work during COVID-19. Then, SYNBK aggressively canceled customer's credit cards who paid their bills on time. Lowered customer's available credit balances for no reason without warning- who does this? Raised APR% on customers with no balances, low balances, and 0% interest for short-terms, only to find their bills raising suddenly upon using the card. Next, those coming off of 0% interest or others with previous special interest rates and promotions, instantly found themselves with canceled cards, again- for no reason.
Multitudes of individuals with more than one Synchrony credit card, found themselves getting ALL of their SYNBK cards canceled within a few months time. Some never receiving notice at all, some getting it after the fact. SYNBK stating, sometimes simply "because they can" as a reason. Or lying and saying customer had bad credit reports, yet, it's only in-house though, no other credit card companies are using these practices. Lying to customers about not paying on time. Lying to customers about late fees resulting from this. Telling customers high balances were the problem, when the they only opened the card to purchase the one product they bought and were approved for it by SYNBK -another lie. The list goes on.
Beginning in September or October of 2020 the Synchrony Credit cards started with these practices. As soon as they were able to legally lift the COVID-19 restrictions that had been placed on them. It appears they've been using these new practices as a means of recovering the losses they suffered during COVID-19. Perhaps, as a means to ensure they do not suffer any further financial losses, they've cut off any customers who fit into their criteria for future potential financial losses or problems.
Whatever Synchrony's intentions are with this newly created procedure of closing out massive amounts of customer accounts, they certainly appears to be highly unethical tactics, if not, possibly illegal. Personally, I believe this should be investigated by whatever appropriate agencies are called upon in these matters. Especially, considering the amount of complaints I've seen listed here, all with similar apparent claims of unusual conduct. More than a few identical cases cease to seem coincidental...

If Synchrony Bank is distributing the Credit Card.. Run because closing an account without warning causes your credit score to suffer even more. The Synchrony Bank Credit Card practice needs to change. Their practice is to continuously check your credit score even though you pay them on time with their existing accounts and make decisions. I called my bank to see what was going on, my bank had NEVER received the payment request from Synchrony, when I reached out to Synchrony bank to see why they were rejecting the payments they stated my bank account number was wrong. I just received a notice stating my account was closed due to 'dishonored payment.' REALLY????? Here is my experience with Synchrony Bank: I've had a Sam's Club Credit Card with them for years and then two years ago out of the blue they decrease my credit limit on it leaving me with like $30 in available credit. I have always paid my account in full from time to time and more than once. I called customer service about it because I never received a letter as to why so they inform me one of the reasons was because I didn't make a bigger payment than the minimum for up to 6 months.
I do periodically pay more than the minimum but when you are trying to pay off a smaller card you are supposed to pay minimums on other cards to pay one off. So that is what I was doing and I let customer service know that if they require more than the minimum payment due that Synchrony is the ones to set the minimum payment so Synchrony Bank can up that amount anytime. But instead they set the minimum and then lower a credit limit if you don't pay more than the minimum. So after this ordeal I turned them into the BBB which didn't really help because the BBB is on Synchrony's side and probably because there is money under the table.
As soon as I submitted a claim with BBB Synchrony Bank replied and BBB automatically closed the case without my reply to Synchrony's reply. Needless to say ever since I turned them into the BBB I have had accounts credit limits decreased and accounts closed that I had paid off in full and some I hadn't used in a few months. One of the accounts of mine they closed was also connected to my husband so Synchrony Bank is ruining both of our credits. I guess just because that's what they do to consumers is ruin others credits.
My advice to others is to not apply for credit thru this bank, you are better off without it. Decreasing credit limits and closing accounts hurts your credit score so without Synchrony Bank you will not have to worry about this. I recently paid off 4 different accounts with this bank and now they have decreased credit limits and closed accounts since then. Never had issues like this with any other creditor just Synchrony Bank. Steer clear very bad bank to deal with!!! Once I get them all off of my credit I won't have to worry about them anymore either!!! I'm sure once they see this post I will be punished for posting because this is what this bank lives for is retaliation!!!

I didn't think much of it a couple of weeks ago when I tried to close a CARE Credit account and could not access my account on-line. Since I had paid the loan off early, I thought maybe they had closed it automatically. I contacted the Synchrony Bank and the person said they couldn't explain why, but they have sent paperwork out to me.
Almost a week later I went into Lowe's to "pay" my CC bill and had no problems. However, when I tried to make a purchase (Lowe's gives 5% if you use the card) the card had been declined. The Lowes employee contacted Synchrony Bank on my behalf. It was at that time I found out I was under investigation for fraud. While on the phone, I told the person at the Bank I could offer my Driver's License to Lowe's, and prove I am who I claim to be. Synchrony Bank not only would not consider it, but treated me as if I was the thief under investigation. The only other information she offered was to watch for paperwork in the mail.
It did not even matter that I could prove who I was and it could be verified right then and there? The guilty charge and verdict was already in motion. I just hadn't appeared in court yet. It sickens me that I have had accounts with them for years, but when my account is suddenly "suspect" by their guidelines, I am no longer treated as a customer, but a criminal. One would think they would treat ME as if they were wanting to protect ME, but I was the bad guy.
I have subsequently found out that my PayPal account has also been locked (affecting two different payment plans) as well as an additional credit card to a different merchant opened one week ago.. FOUR accounts are affected and I cannot do anything. And yet, my identity was not in question when I MADE my payment to Lowe's. The account was only frozen IF I was taking. But not giving. This really upsets me since we are a single income family and we rely on PayPal to offer the six months same as cash on items we cannot afford immediately. And this is halted.
In addition to my pain, it appears my credit score has decreased. Not only mine, but since my spouse is attached to the account, their credit is also going to get hurt. It was at that time I went to look at complaints and saw dozens and dozens on this website. Many quite recent. 1 Star! And the common denominator? It appears the customer is penalized if they pay the loan off too early. How can I not come to this conclusion since I have been doing this for a while with Synchrony Bank, and my story is so similar to others who have posted. "Frozen"-"Paid early"-"credit hurt". See the common denominator?
This begs the question-"why then offer six month (or whatever loan time) same as cash"? Unless it is a gamble for them in the hopes that many will default and pay the high interest rate? As they weed out the ones who pay early? And as one person from FL said, why waste time contacting the BBB? I agree! Since Synchrony Bank has an A+ Rating as a paid member, who is stupid enough to think they would actually care about the little guy/gal taking a position against one of their paid members? And from my personal, recent experiences, I have been turned away twice from the BBB because the complaint was involving a paid member. So I have already learned my lesson that they don't care.
It sickens me that this bank is hurting people's credit. Where is the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau? I hesitated sending them the complaint because of the "fluffy" web page. Their site it reads "About us- We're the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a U.S. government agency that makes sure banks, lenders, and other financial companies TREAT YOU FAIRLY." (Emphasis mine)
It goes on to say; "We aim to make consumer financial markets work for consumers, responsible providers, and the economy as a whole. We protect consumers from unfair, deceptive, or abusive practices and take action against companies that break the law. We arm people with the information, steps, and tools that they need to make smart financial decisions."
As the Church Lady would say "Isn't That Special." Has anyone from this tax paid organization looked at consumer affairs to read of how Synchrony Bank is treating us? Has anyone who left a complaint on Consumer Affairs been contacted by them? I realize there is always the garden variety complaint where someone is upset, but many of the complaints I read are situations where people are being hurt by this bank as they watch their credit score hurt. And as pointed out, when your credit line is suddenly reduced, so goes the credit score.
These tax paid "guardians" seem to have a lot of bark but no bite. They get paid whether they help or not. I can only hope SOMEONE will look into the common denominator, the gist as to why people are having their scores reduced. And to see if this abusive pattern is only because of the sin of paying debt off too early. Or is it simply one overzealous person who is given such power to hurt us because they can? As I said, my accounts are frozen and if I wanted to make a purchase this day, I cannot. All because of Synchrony Bank.

I had four accounts with Synchrony Bank. CareCredit, Ashley Furniture, plus 2 more. Initially, the card for the electronics was closed. I had actually never used this card, the limit was low ($1000) and I did not think much about it as I figured it was lack of use. HOWEVER, the Care Credit card came next! This credit account had initially been over $20k, was paid in full EARLY, with ZERO missed or late payments, and I have had the credit line for literally YEARS. After several years, the credit limit was dropped to $10k, as it had not been used. This was fine, it stayed that way for a long time and I figured if I needed it I would just apply for whatever amount over I needed. Then out of no where Synchrony closed the card with no notice or any valid reasoning. I eventually got a very disrespectful letter apprising me of the account closure, complained that the information included in the letter was both inaccurate and offensive... with no response at all.
Next, The Sports Card was closed. Again, 100% on time payments, paid off early, $5k limit. Next, the Ashley card, again 100% on time payments, paid off early, $8k limit. Though my credit report CLEARLY SHOWS I have a 100% on time payment record on ALL of my accounts for years, with each account closure my credit rating dropped more and more... until now I am in the mid-low 600s!! This is NOT due to any action of mine, this is specifically due to the available amount of credit decreasing rapidly. Within a few weeks! We are in the middle of a pandemic, and I have had to assist more than one family member by some financial means, which I have, out of necessity, done through other credit. The balances of open credit provided by Synchrony allowed me to do this without a severe impact on my credit standing, and being 100% forthcoming, my credit rating was still "good" when the initial closure of Care Credit was done.
Then begins the spiral downward of my credit rating, 100% due to Synchrony deciding to close accounts I had maintained in good faith and honor. Each closure dropped my credit score, and not only had a severe impact on my credit rating, but in doing so severely diminished my options moving forward. This is how your company treats loyal and valuable paying customers? In the middle of a Pandemic when the impact is greatest? These practices are unfair and unethical, AT BEST.
NOW, were I to simply "reapply" for any of these credit lines... I WOULD BE DENIED due to the higher credit score requirements I am aware are held by Synchrony to extend credit in the first place... yet it was the closing of these accounts (SOLELY) that affected my score! This is NOT a typical "risk management" decision, this is a deliberate and premeditated action on the part of Synchrony Bank, which becomes even more clear as I look online and see the sheer VOLUME of other people this has been perpetrated upon. While utilizing very public marketing of support for "Diversity, Equity and COVID19 Relief", this bank is systematically causing undue harm (during a pandemic) to many of its customers (in these very categories) who have maintained a long-term relationship with them in good standing.

Synchrony Bank automatically closed my account because of 8 months of inactivity. No warning, nothing. Just a 'nasty gram' letter. Sure, in their small print it may or may not have said they can do this at their discretion, but I'm sure they don't care that this can adversely affect one's credit rating. A forewarning letter would have been appreciated. Very poor customer service in my opinion. Thanks a lot, Synchrony Bank. Won't be doing business with you any more.

I called them thinking this had to be a mistake. It wasn't. They canceled me for those 2 payments, which at the time I paid back right away with late fee PLUS next payment way before its due date. They still wouldn't take me back when I assured them it would never happen again and that was the manager. Well Care Credit I wouldn't take you back if you paid me now. To make a long story short: I've been having the same recurring problem with submitting payments, via customer service, with CareCredit/Synchrony Bank. For four consecutive months, trying to make allocated payments for specific transactions with this company has been very frustrating and suspect. I've had to make multiple calls to resolve problems with processing simple, basic and uncomplicated transactions. With every phone call I get a confirmation number verifying the transaction, only later to discover upon checking my credit card account and my bank account that either the payment was not processed or the payment allocation was not made and in the meantime late fees, finance charges, interests, or whatever verbiage at the time being used by the rep, is tacked on to the balance. So I first got the Synchrony Amazon Store Card four years ago. All was well and I never had any issues with this account, until now. I usually pay my account in full each month to avoid interest and keep my statement balance at $0. I have never paid late, not once. Last month (Feb 2021) I had spent about $120 on my Amazon Store Card. I paid in full two days before the due date of 2/10/2021. Statement printed $0 balance on 2/15/2021. Synchrony reported $0 balance on 2/18/2021.
Then I spent about $400 on the card, with three charges on 2/21/21, 2/22/21, and 2/23/21, and do you know how they rewarded me for always paying early and in full? They REPORTED MY CURRENT MONTH'S SPENDING to the Credit Bureaus! Ten days after the bill closed, and one week after they reported my $0 balance to the bureaus, they re-reported my account with the brand new charges that were merely hours old! Those charges have not been billed yet, and won't be until March 15, 2021, so the Grace Period to pay in full won’t even begin until 3/15/2021 and those charges will not be due until 4/10/2021!
Do the bureaus really need to know that I bought a few things at Amazon before those charges are even due? Is this their way to punish me because I get 5% cash back on this card and never pay any interest? My credit score was harmed by their unnecessary, mid-cycle report and when I tried to call them about it, they put me on hold twice, 15 minutes each time, until I gave up and hung up.
My response to all of this was to immediately log in and pay my account in full. Payments show as "processed" in the payment history, but the billing activity still does not reflect the payments, nor have they been withdrawn from my bank. So now it appears they are "false processing" my payments for reasons unknown to me. I think they have crossed a major line and are now engaging in illegal activity.
Now that they have monkeyed with my account that in this way, I am reading lots of other reviews about what they have done to other people in recent weeks and months. They are lowering people's credit lines, closing accounts, and taking other actions that directly hurt customer's credit ratings, and they are doing this to the good customers who manage their accounts responsibly. They truly are punishing the responsible cardholders for reasons unknown. It makes me wonder what is going on with them internally. I do know they are paying out a large class-action settlement, but it's in the millions and Synchrony's 4th quarter 2020 earnings were in the billions so I can't imagine that is the issue.
Seems like they are just wanting to get rid of customers who don't pay interest and enjoy the rewards offered on their various store cards. Really a shame that they treat good responsible customers this way. We are literally being penalized for being a better credit risk! If I didn't already have these accounts, I think I would avoid getting involved with this bank because they may be ok for a while, but that could change overnight as it has for me, without warning and for no apparent reason other than they just want to. If they don't process my payments tomorrow, I'll be complaining to the CFPB.

Out of all my creditors synchrony bank was the least willing to work with me.
In an attempt to save my credit cards I paid Synchrony bank off first before my other creditors, since my other creditors were more willing to work with me in such trying times. Synchrony bank literally waited for me to pay off my accounts and then CLOSED ALL OF THEM within a month’s time frame, stating my credit score dropped too low during the pandemic and that I could reapply again once my score came back up! Hi, please do not open a credit card account. They have no security if you want to do a chargeback. They will take the seller's side and leave you with no reason why. They just say, "The seller has advantage and we will add the total back to your payments." I made a purchase from a big company and I told them the box came in the mail but they forgot to put the item in the box, the box was empty with pads to protect the sides looks like I had return something and send it back in the box.
So I called the company 2 times, live chat with them 3 times, and had 27 emails sending back and forth, and the company tried to blame it on the carrier, and they asked me to get a hold of the carrier too. So I had to do all the work for the company sent them pictures, top, bottom, and side of the box and also inside the box with nothing inside.
Now I tried my hardest to show proof (and I did) of the empty box, and the company told me to file a claim with the carrier. Now I had to call the carrier and show proof that I talked to the carrier, and they said that the company should be responsible to file the claim they are credible for this action, then trusting a buyer like me to file that claim.
Here is when my credit card company suppose to get my back, but they didn't. Synchrony told me the chargeback that I filed is in favor of the seller because they have the advantage. That is the only reason they give, or please call the seller or company to finish the dispute. I told the company that I don't have the item two times and live chat with them 3 time and they said they talked to their supervisors and they said they have delivered the item, and please file a claim with the carrier service. I am like why don't you file a claim with the carrier, you are a well known company and the carrier told me to tell them that with an email that the carrier sent to me, stating the company is viable of filing a claim with the carrier.
I started a chargeback for 2 years going back and forth saying I have no item only an empty box lost a lot of money and no help from Synchrony stating that everything is my fault and the seller did everything they can to have the advantage of this dispute. Please don't use their credit card service they will not have protection for this kind of money loss for the buyer.

I was a long time customer of Care Credit (one month shy of 5 years, with a credit amount of $9000) and I NEVER missed a payment or was late paying. Due to COVID and the difficult past year, I had two (one in March and one in November) where my Health Saving's Account fell below the usual balance, and my automatic payment for Care Credit was declined, BUT paid the very next day.
Because of these two payments, Care Credit closed my account. (Of course they waited until I had paid off my entire balance.) I think it is horrific to treat long time customers (or any customers) this way, especially in the time of a pandemic. Shame on them! I'm actually glad they closed my account, now that I know what kind of "care" they have for their customers. I recommend you look elsewhere for a credit company because we need companies that actually CARE for their customers, especially in their time of need.

There were 595 consumer reviews of Synchrony Bank in Stamford, Ct on the BBB website. Synchrony Bank has a rating of 1.06 STARS out of 5 STARS. There were 1950 complaints in the last year alone and 5053 complaints in the last three years. Somehow, the BBB rates Synchrony Bank with an A+ Rating probably because the BBB collects a yearly fee from Synchrony Bank and presumably because Synchrony Bank will provide you with a canned response no matter what. There is a huge difference between legal and ethical norms. Synchrony Bank can do just about anything they want to legally but that does not mean it is ethical.
If you take the time to read complaints, you will find that Synchrony Bank does not care about your business. They do not care that they are hurting your credit score even when you are a good paying customer. Take the time to read the responses that Synchrony Bank has to individuals that have paid their accounts as agreed and had their credit rating destroyed by this company. There are probably hundreds, if not thousands of individuals, that have had their credit destroyed by this business without cause and the responses from Synchrony Bank are all canned.
The consistent responses are always:
1) When you got credit from the bank, you agreed to allow Synchrony Bank to reduce your credit limit or close your account at any time for any reason even though they will not contest in the majority of complaints that a customer has paid them on time for even a matter of years.
2) If you say, correctly that I might add, that Synchrony has hurt your credit score. The response is that your credit score can change on a daily basis. Even though Synchrony banks employees without any doubt that they hurt your credit, don’t expect an apology or an admittance that they have done so.
3) Synchrony Bank claims to provide notice to individuals that they have reduced your credit limit or closed your account, even though it is statistically impossible for them to actually be doing so as required by law.
4) They will say that they will review your credit periodically with their credit scoring system and tell you that you need to contact the credit report agency when they hurt or destroy your credit for NO REASON.
5) They will report closing your account or reducing your credit limit immediately and claim that it would hurt their reputation with the credit reporting agencies if they did not do so. Of course this is an utter lie, the FCRA does not require anyone to report anything at any time and I doubt highly that the credit reporting agencies care as long as a consumer is complaining.
6) They will say that we care about your business even though it is obvious that they do not. Read their canned responses to complaints.
Between 12/21/2020 and 2/8/2021, Synchrony Bank received a total of 48 consumer complaints SOLELY directed at the headquarters element of Synchrony Bank and SOLELY through the Better Business Bureau (BBB) located in Stamford, CT. This DOES NOT include complaints directed at any other Synchrony Bank subsidiary locations and DOES NOT include complaints from other BBB locations throughout the United States. Furthermore, this analysis DOES NOT account for the number of complaints on other platforms or number of individuals that never made a complaint. Thus, we can extrapolate that the numbers of incidents is EXTREMELY under-reported.
Out of the 48 complaints between 12/21/2020 and 2/8/2021, 50% (24 complaints) related to Synchrony closing accounts (20) or reducing credit limits (4) on accounts. From a statistical standpoint, approximately 50% of the 1950 complaints in the last year or 975 complaints were for closing accounts or reducing credit limits. In the last three years, approximately 50% of 5053 complaints in the last three years or 2526.5 complaints were for closing accounts or reducing credit limits.
Out of the 24 complaints associated with closing accounts or reducing credit limits, the following information was extrapolated: 62% (15 of the 24 individuals) specifically stated in their complaint that they paid their account on time and Synchrony Bank did not dispute this in their response to the claim. From a statistical standpoint, approximately 62% of 2625.5 individuals (1627 Individuals) in the last three years had a DECREASE in their FICO or VantageScore as a SOLE discretion of Synchrony Bank closing or reducing their credit limits when they paid their account on time or had a zero balance..
58% (14 of the 24 individuals) stated specifically in their complaints that they NEVER received notice from Synchrony Bank at all PRIOR to OR AFTER accounts were closed or credit limits were reduced. From a statistical standpoint, if the approximately 58% held true. Out of the 975 complaints in the last year, approximately 565 people did not receive ANY notice that their account was closed or their credit limit was decreased. In similar fashion, it would indicate that about approximately 1522 individuals out of 2625.5 people in the last three years DID NOT receive the required notice. Synchrony Bank stated explicitly multiple times in their responses to individual complaints that they are aware of the requirement in the Fair Credit Reporting Act to notify clients that their accounts were closed or limits were decreased.
Synchrony Bank claimed that the individuals that complained all received notice even though 58% said that they received no notice. Thus, it is highly that Synchrony Bank is in fact making false statements and is in direct violation of the law. 50% (12 of the 24 individuals) stated specifically in their complaints that their credit was negatively impacted as a DIRECT RESULT of Synchrony Bank. In a technical sense of the word, Synchrony Bank may legally close or reduce the credit limit on any account for ANY REASON at their SOLE discretion. However, it is HIGHLY UNETHICAL to destroy an individual’s credit when they are paying their Synchrony bill as required or maintaining a zero balance. This becomes an even greater issue when Synchrony Bank is OBVIOUSLY not providing many individuals notice or allowing the individual an opportunity to reduce their credit utilization rate prior to reporting to a credit bureau.
Synchrony Bank has made claims that their credibility with the credit bureau would be hurt if they failed to report accounts closed by the creditor for no legitimate reason other than they can do so legally without any oversight or repercussions. It is also technically legal to decrease an individual’s credit limit at their sole discretion without oversight or repercussions. However, it is extremely poor business to not give an individual an opportunity to decrease their credit utilization prior to reporting the decrease to credit bureaus. Synchrony Bank’s claim about credibility with a credit bureau is laughable. There is nothing in the Fair Credit Reporting Act that forces a creditor to report closing an account especially when the individual has been a loyal paying customer of the business. Why would you do this when you know all it does is hurt a loyal paying customer?
There is also nothing in the Fair Credit Report Act that prohibits a creditor to have the decency to allow an individual an opportunity to reduce their credit utilization rate prior to reporting a credit limit decrease to a credit reporting agency. Synchrony Bank has the legal ability to arbitrarily reduce someone’s credit limit based upon whatever “credit scoring” system that they deem relevant.
Thus, this bank can reduce your credit limit from $3000 to $1500 without notice. If you owe $1490 when the decrease takes place, your credit utilization rate will increase from 50% to 99% without any notice. In a case like this, Synchrony Bank will DIRECTLY negatively impact you FICO or VantageScore in a major way. Since 35% of your credit score is based upon credit utilization, your credit score could be impacted by a hundred points and there is nothing you can do about it because Synchrony Bank can do whatever they want to do with your credit and there is nothing you can do about it.

My account was closed as my payment method used was rejected 4 times and kept on being rejected due to a wrong wire number I received from my bank when setting up my auto payment on the Synchrony Bank portal. I tried 4 times to set up the autopayment and on all 4 occasions the payment was posted and the rejected later on and I could not figure out why as there was no feedback as to why the transaction payment was rejected. I tried calling for help holding on for 45min and an hour on two occasions without even speaking to anyone. I then tried writing and never got any help or guidance from Synchrony. They just closed my account.
I finally figured out the problem and got the correct wire numbers and immediately proceeded to make payment for half of the total amounts due not even the min amount due. I also previously had an account with them and never ever lapsed on any payment. Synchrony bank just do not care and just advised me that they are sorry nothing can be done to help me. Their customer service team did not even have the decency to call me and talk to me so that I could explain what had happened. I am very angry and frustrated that we get lumped with these service providers but then we get no service or support when we need it.
