Money Management International (MMI) is a nonprofit debt relief and credit counseling organization that specializes in debt management plans (DMPs). It is also an Department of Housing and Urban Development-approved counseling service for foreclosure prevention and homebuyer education. There are over 35 locations across a number of states for face-to-face meetings, and telephone counseling is available 24/7 for all.

What is Money Management International?
Money Management International offers debt management plans and credit counseling. Along with its paid services, it has several free financial education resources, including live webinars on how to avoid identity theft and manage your income. There are also free educational resources for military families.
You can find budget templates and podcasts and private workshops in select cities in both English and Spanish. Other languages might be available upon request through the help of an interpreter.
MMI meets industry standards regarding protecting and handling your personal data. Additionally, information is never shared with any third party and only collected with your express permission.
How does Money Management International work?
To get started with MMI, you will need to create a secure online account and share your income and expenses. The company can also pull some data from your credit report to save you time.
When that is complete, a counselor will analyze your information and provide money saving recommendations, a personal budget plan and a DMP. Counselors are available by chat, email and phone and can further customize your plan if you need it.
If it is determined that a debt management plan is right for you, MMI will negotiate with your creditors to reduce your interest rates and minimum monthly payments.

How much does Money Management International cost?
The debt management plan fee varies based on where you live and is set and regulated by your state. On average, customers pay a $33 initial setup fee and a $25 monthly fee for services.
The following services have a flat-rate fee:
- Online homebuyer education courses: $35 to $99, depending on the course
- Bankruptcy counseling: $50 (individuals or couples) (fees may be waived)
- Reverse mortgage counseling: $199

How quickly can I start a debt management plan?
After you create an account and input all your financial information, MMI can give you a potential repayment plan in less than 15 minutes. If this proposed plan looks good, you can sign the agreement and make your first deposit immediately. However, this process can take longer if you need additional help.
Will a debt management plan hurt my credit score?
Your credit score may dip at the beginning as your credit accounts are closed, but this should be temporary. The goal of a debt management plan is to help you make consistent payments and reduce your overall debt. Both of these factors will have a positive impact on your credit score. MMI says that its average client sees a 90-point improvement after successfully completing the program.
Can I use a credit card while on a debt management plan?
Typically, creditors will require you to close credit cards that are being enrolled in a debt management plan. You might be able to keep one card open and off your DMP for emergency purposes.
How long do debt management plans last?
This varies by how much debt you have to repay, but most debt management plans are designed to be completed in five years or less.

Is Money Management International legit?
Money Management International is a legitimate company with history going back to 1958. MMI is a member of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) and says it has provided education, counseling and financial assistance to over 1 million consumers. It says that, on average, DMP clients reduce their interest rate to 7%, down from 24%, and pay off their debt in four years or less.

Money Management International is AMAZING. If you're struggling to make your monthly payments with your creditors, and have struggled to get into contact with them to negotiate, just bite and sign up with MMI. It costs you nothing, and the resources are endless and life-changing. I cannot thank MMI enough for getting me out of debt faster than I ever could have done myself. I am eternally grateful for the services that you've provided me, and I'm sure to recommend you to everyone I can. I never had an issue getting into contact with their help if I had a question or issue, and making my monthly payments was so easy on the website. Again, if you've even thought about reaching out to MMI, just do it! You'll thank yourself in a few years!

Did a good job on paying off my creditors in a timely manner, but not too easy getting in touch with someone to speak to. Also make sure you know when their payments will be made to your creditors so that they’re not late. I recommend them.

I have nothing to say except great things about MMI or Money Management International! Cynthia and Rowena are the best! They know their stuff and are very clear and understandable. I would highly recommend them to anyone who would like to bring down their debt. Both women were patient! They called back, they confirmed, they asked questions, just a beautiful experience and they brought relief to my mind. Just very professional people to talk to. Always took out time to talk with us on our plan! They are to be highly, highly commended. **

I rarely leave reviews like this, but my experience with MMI has been beyond frustrating and has directly impacted my credit. I enrolled in their debt management program and made all of my payments as agreed. Despite doing everything I was supposed to do, multiple accounts ended up past due due to errors on MMI’s side. This was not a one-time issue either—there were repeated problems, including having to re-send proposals to creditors, which raised serious concerns about how my accounts were being managed.
The most concerning part was the misinformation I was given. I was explicitly told that one of my accounts (First Premier) would not be reported as late. I relied on that information, only to later receive multiple alerts confirming that the account was, in fact, reported past due. At that point, the situation went from frustrating to unacceptable. This wasn’t just an inconvenience—it had a direct impact on my credit profile, despite me following the program as instructed.
What made things worse was the lack of urgency and accountability. Even after these errors were identified, there was no meaningful effort to correct the damage or take ownership of the situation. It felt like the impact to my credit was being treated as insignificant, when in reality it has real consequences. I’ve now had to escalate this through formal complaints with regulatory agencies due to the lack of resolution. Based on my experience, I would not recommend MMI. When you’re trusting a company with something as important as your credit, accuracy and accountability are critical—and unfortunately, that was not my experience here.

Excellent program. After I had financial scam, I bought a huge amount of my credit card, I was very frustrated depressing I don't know what do I do? I began my journey to repair my finances and get out of debt first by looking into several different options and loan solutions, etc. I chose MMI and was very happy in every way. I felt the solution was extremely beneficial and fair and from the very beginning, everything that was explained happened just like they said. My interest rates were renegotiated while the balances remained the same but everything happened just as they said and all of my creditors were satisfied at the balances, with only the interest rates affected. I would highly recommend working with MMI.
