My wife and I file our taxes with H&R block every year. We will no longer be going to them, EVER! I just recently, got a letter from the IRS stating that my 2014 taxes were done incorrectly and I had missing income from a State Return the prior year that needed to be declared. So I looked through my folder for the tax year in question and the form the state sent me with the income in question was in there, with a check mark from the H&R tax associate like it was entered. So she put a check mark on the document but it was not included on line 10 of the filing form sent to the IRS like it should have been. This is entirely H&R Block's fault. We provided the right documents and the H&R tax associate neglected to put in the value it showed.
Now I owe the IRS 1000$, due immediately. I would have rather got no refund. I contacted H&R block and they want my wife and I to come in and waste our time so they can review what they did wrong. When I know exactly what they did wrong. They offered to pay the IRS interest and fees if we come in and let them review, but that is far from good enough. What about my time? What about the money I paid to have H&R prepare them in the first place? As far as I'm concerned the 40$ they are offering to cover is not satisfactory. We are not the Clinton's, but an hour of our time cost more than 40$. I paid 300$ in preparation fees alone. They need to at least refund the prep fees + the penalties and interest. Minimally, 350$, but they refused.
So I'm here letting folks know to stay away from this company and what we can do to fight back because their arbitration clause stops the justice system from enforcing any laws against them. I'm filing form 14157 with the IRS and making a complaint against the company and the preparing associate. I recommend others that this happened to, do the same. I feel like the tax associate was pressured by the H&R block tax service company management to not put in the additional income from the prior years state refund because it would have lowered my return to nothing.
If my return is too low, they can't advertise that H & R block gets back more money for their customers than anyone else. So they offer their associates rewards for getting higher refunds, so the associates cheat on peoples taxes and the people don't know it until they get a letter from the IRS years later. So she got more company points for getting me a larger return that was not justified. I didn't even know she cheated and that I actually owed money. While she hit her company goal and got her bonus. I got screwed. Really bad idea to give incentive for cheating the IRS H&R Block execs, I'm turning you into the IRS. I hope they stick Sen Warren on your company!

I have called several times trying to resolve my issue. However every time I get a human on the phone they hang up or just start pressing numbers, which then sends me to the survey. I had an issue what three years of tax returns which was their mistake. They did the Amended return only for that to be sent back by the IRS saying it was incorrectly done. I called the 1-800 number. They set me up with an appointment. I went to that appointment today, only to be told that their systems are down. The lady couldn't help me.
Since that happen I tried to call the 1-800 number again. Even asked for a manager this time. Only to once again be hung up on. So I guess they can't help you once you have a problem. P.S. Do not waste your money buying their peace of mind. I bought it and still get no help. I am so frustrated. Next year I will be doing my own taxes. At least if I make a mistake I will know what I did. NEVER AGAIN will I pay 262.00 TO get my taxes done incorrectly.

My husband and I went to H&R Block to file our taxes this March. We have a VERY basic file (one income, one maternity leave, and one charitable donations form). Our appointment took almost three hours and we were able to pick up our return that week. We got $2200 back from the government. As a fairly low-income, young family, that money was spent pretty quickly on some car repairs and other necessities.
THREE months later, we received a call from H&R Block telling us that they reviewed our file again and discovered that they gave us too much money back and we now owe the CRA $1400. That is over half of our return and we did not have the money just sitting there. The only thing they offered to do to make the situation right is pay for our fee next year, which doesn't help at all considering that we will never be using their services again. It took multiple phone calls to even hear back from anyone in a position of seniority and the communication with the organization was terrible.
After investigating a little bit, we discovered that the employees at H&R Block are not accountants and are only trained to deal with a few things. Even so, the mistake they made was so basic and we had one of the easiest tax files you can get. We are so disappointed and frustrated to have to pay such a large amount to the CRA because of a very simple mistake made by an H&R Block employee. Please pay the extra costs and go to a certified accountant for your tax needs because these "tax experts" will make a mess of your taxes and cause you a lot of grief.

I have never dealt with a company this hideous. They did my taxes wrong and now I owe the irs. My first claim was submitted April, 2016. At first I was told the claim was approved and I would be receiving a check. When the check didn't arrive I called back and was told it is now under review. From a series of 25 conversations with the claims department I still do not have any answers. They asked that I contact the IRS for more documentation, which I have done twice now. I have had over 6 new claims, and promised a supervisor would call me back 5 times. I have yet to receive any phone call regarding this issue. This company lies to me each time I call, and I cannot believe they are still in business. They are crooks, and I highly recommend NOONE goes to them to get their taxes done.

After have our taxes completed we chose the prepaid Advantage Visa for our refund. The very next day the card was blocked and on calling they went over my purchases. Yes, I told them, 1 purchase of over $1900 was not done by us. I requested that they send the charge back. They put the charge thru anyway and after 7 months I am still fighting for my refund. When you call the number on the back of the card for assistance, you hear that it is H R Block, but it's Direct Cash Bank. H R Block hasn't been any help and we believe they should have been. Direct Cash Bank is very unprofessional and disappointing. I wish I had taken all the cash off that card the day I got it. Please be aware of the potential for problems with these cards.

I filed my tax return for 2016 from H&R Block. The file was completed on February 10th 2016 by **. Along with filing my tax return, I had applied for ITIN for my wife as well. Office address – 735 SW 185TH, ALOHA, OR, 97006. In May, I received a letter from IRS stating that there were some mistakes in the ITIN application form for my wife and they have rejected the application. Also, since the ITIN got rejected, I received $600 less refund from IRS.
I called H&R Block office immediately and they gave an appointment to fix the issue and reapply for the ITIN. Next day I visited their office (10477 SW Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy, Beaverton, OR 97005 (503) 643-9723) but the tax preparer told me that she would not be able to sign the ITIN application since she does not have the authority. I will have to go another day when proper authorized person will be present who can sign the ITIN form.
So far I have visited their office four times and no progress made till date. Neither the ITIN application has been sent nor has the amendment for $600 been filed. Also, I am not being able to send my state tax file since I have not received my wife's ITIN yet. Whenever I am calling their office, every time they are saying that they will call me back but I never received a call. These people say that they will guarantee of the maximum refund and accurate filing but I see that they do not have that much expertise. Also, they are very unprofessional. Worst experience!!!

Due to an error in H&R Block's web application, and management's unfamiliarity with the tax code, I lost out on a $2200 tax rebate last year. The State of Vermont requires that all residents file a Homestead Declaration (HS-122) every year for a credit on their property tax. Last year, H&R Block did not include this form in my return. When I questioned them about it, they said it was because I had not requested a property tax adjustment. This has absolutely nothing to do with the form, and is not a requirement of filing. The State's own website asks if you're requesting an adjustment first, and if not you still have to complete the application. If you don't, your property tax is not calculated correctly by your town, as they need that data (business use of home, income, etc.). In short, H&R Block "fixed" something that was not broken, and has no clue what they're doing. They do not deserve to remain in business.

Filed tax returns with H&R Block. There were errors with the 2014 return and received a letter from the IRS requested omitted forms. Instead of a refund I ended up owing money. I made a follow up appointment with H&R Block, the representative informed me that there was an error made, faxed the requested forms. Per the representative, fees paid for tax preparation would be refunded and costs billed from the IRS would also be reimbursed.
The 2015 returned was amended due to late notification of a trustee account and was also erroneous per the IRS, so ended up owing additional money for this as well. My name was spelled wrong on the returns. When I met with a manager at H&R Block to discuss this, I was informed that I would not be reimbursed for the errors. In addition to this there was no record of a refund and no explanation for why this had not been entered.
The manager reported she would have to send the refund request to "corporate," to process. She also had the nerve to ask me if I had a copy of the receipt and when I did not asked her to look this up on her computer. This took several hours of time over the phone with the IRS and resulted in an in person visit with the IRS to straighten out. I will not be using H&R Block in the future and am not able to recommend this business.

This was our third year of the glorious H&R Block experience. Filed taxes in 2015. No return. Found out that preparer entered account information for someone else (different bank, acct. number, routing number). Inexplicably, this bank DEPOSITED the funds even though none of the credentials matched. I called help number about 12 times. I was always given the runaround. I went to local office and was told they couldn't help me. They didn't even offer a refund of the fees. I found out they closed my claim for no reason and the information in the file was completely inaccurate.
I reopened the claim and didn't hear back for another month (until I faxed them a nasty letter and filed a claim with BBB). Same crap, different day. No help, refused to offer support of any kind to resolve the issue with the bank or IRS. Refused to even ask their insurance to cover the return amount so they can deal with the bank seeing as it is their fault. Then the woman who was "helping" us left for vacation and sent us to another lemming. She did nothing. She even told us it was our job to call H&R Block Corporate to resolve the issue. What are these people being paid for? Anyways, now I'll be suing a bunch of people I guess, all thanks to the wonderful world of H&R Block. On the plus side, they gave me back my preparation fees (yippie!)

H&R Block stated that we did not qualify to be able to deduct out sales tax on a new house that we build (a $5000) error. We filed an amended return and the IRS stated we did qualify for the deduction. H&R Block would not admit they made a error and would not help correct it. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH H&R BLOCK. They do not know what they are doing. You will lose money if you do.

I will try to be brief. I relocated to Michigan for a new job in 2012. I had my taxes filed by ** at H&R Block's 338 E Lewis, Milan, MI 48160 location. He was recommended to me by family. He successfully filed my 2012 taxes. The issue that I am contacting you about started with my 2013 taxes. I will be upfront. I did not purchase the "Peace of Mind" plan. I own a small rental in Maine where I used to live. I purchased and put 87% of the house in service as a rental in 2007. The remaining 17%, I lived in as my personal residence.
In 2010, I moved out of the house and placed the remaining 17% in service as a rental. The allocation of the percentage of the house for business use and the placed in service dates were all entered correctly in my 2012 return. In early January, while preparing my 2015 taxes, I discovered the error were the business use % from my 2014 tax return was 100% for both 83 Percent Building and 17 Percent Building.
Upon further review, I found that the same mistake had been made on my 2013 taxes as well. I initially thought that it was a software glitch. I still do not know why this change was made. This led to me receiving a much larger refund than I should have in 2013 and 2014. It cost me $366.00 in 2013 and $491.25 in 2014 to prepare my taxes, and I owe $2,633.43 in back taxes, penalties, and interest.
After finding the error, I contacted Robin ** at the Belleville office. She verified that I was right about the error and helped me file federal and state amendments for TY2013 and TY2014. H&R Block has promised to pay for the penalties, interest, and fees, and I would have liked them to pay for the amount I owe due to their error in addition to the penalties, interest and fees.
When I went to the Milan office to talk with **. He told me that he did not recall the details of my return, and that I should have looked more carefully at my return before filing. After that I decided to contact someone from the company’s national office to help me. Initially, I had difficulty getting someone from H&R Block to assist me. I contacted H&R Block multiple times to no avail. I had 3 case number's closed (**) without my knowledge requiring me to open a new case # each time. I only found out that the case had been closed after calling to check up on my case.
On 3/10/16, I called H&R Block again for the 7th or 8th time. They said that they would have to open a new case number for me again. This time I talked with a manager, Carlitos (ID Number: **), who said that they would handle the case through the Block Advisors group. On 3/14/16, I called H&R Block again to check up on last week's conversation with Carlitos. I spoke with Nicole originally. I explained that I was trying to get a hold of Carlitos. She said that it was not possible. She instead connected me with her manager Blake. I had a brief discussion with Blake outlining what had taken place up until that day's call. He said that he would send an email directly to the escalation team and that they would contact me within 24- 48 hours in order to get the issue resolved. He said that he would reference case numbers ** in his email.
There were a few other additional calls and I was told that I could have the amount paid to have my taxes done at both locations reimbursed. I received a check for $419.25 from the Belleville office to cover the cost of filing. I called again on 6/28/16. I told them that I would like to close this out once and for all. I told them that a check for $419.25 had been issued by the Belleville office for TY2014 tax prep, but I had not received $366.00 for TY2013 prep from the Milan office. I also need to be reimbursed for interest and fees from both locations.
They opened another case number **. I have called several times in order to talk with Juan since the last call on the 6/28/16. He is supposed to be the one responsible for dealing with the franchise disputes. As of July 31, 2016 I have not heard back from him. The Belleville office has been nice enough to help me with some issues with my TY2014 federal tax amendment. I did not apply the correct supporting documents with my 1040X. However, this should be resolved. This is a brief synopsis of what I have been dealing with H&R Block over the past few months. At this point I have only received the $491.25 from the Belleville office.

We purchased the "Best of Both Worlds" tax package. This allowed us to use the online software and then have our work reviewed by an H&R Block tax pro. We filed the online portion before the tax deadline. The H and R Block tax pro stated they were unable to review and complete tax return by April 15 deadline; but they would file an extension. They gave us a total amount due to the IRS. We paid the IRS by the tax deadline. The tax pro then requested documents that we had previously entered online. I sent the requested documents and asked for a confirmation that they had received them. No reply was sent.
A few weeks later, I contacted the tax pro for confirmation of receipt and to check on the status of our tax return. Still no response. I then called the corporate customer service number for H&R, they were unable to tell me the status of my federal or state return. Two days later a new tax pro was assigned to us. I asked her about the status of our return. She never gave us a status update. In one message, she did say that the previous tax pro had filed an extension. Then she notified us that we owed the IRS more money and that she needed our Drive License info. We paid the additional money and supplied our Driver License info.
Last week, we received a letter from the IRS stating we were fined for failure to file. I contacted the IRS, they pulled my tax transcript. H&R Block NEVER filed an extension. They didn't file our taxes until JUNE 29th. This highly unprofessional. I have called H&R block 2 days in a row, and have had excessive wait times over an hour, and have not yet been able to speak to a representative.

I would urge the public to avoid using this software. When I called support about a mysterious $5370.00 made on our joint tax returns, they were unable to find out where the amount came from. I wound up spending a lot of time on the phone only to be told that H&R Block would only look for the error if I paid extra. When I took exception to that idea, the support person adopted a condescending "Well, next time, read the terms and conditions carefully!" tone and then blamed me for the error - even though they were unable to figure out what the error was! On top of that, they suggested that I had probably made adjustments to my return after filing that I just wasn't telling them about! To sum up, their message was, "Too bad there's an error, it's probably your fault, because probably you're a liar. But if you pay us money..."

I used H&R Block's online tax software through the IRS website. I followed all of the prompts and filled out the form receiving the normal return I usually get for 2013, which was $3200. I have 2 children and a homeowner, with only one income that year and both of us were full-time college students. I was sent a letter from the IRS that the mortgage interest had been added twice and I owed $2800 back. How can this even be when I usually get anywhere from $2800-3200 refund every year. I contested it and lost. I just received a letter in the mail from the IRS stating that I now owe $3200 back for 2014 tax year.
I used the same software from H&R Block that I did for the 2013 taxes. This time they are saying that I claimed the American opportunity refund for students of $2000, and with fines and interest they want to take almost all my refund back. I was a full-time student during the year of 2014 as well. How is it that with only one income under $35,000, 2 children, and a home do we for 2 years get zero refund back? Wth is going on with this software. Each time I filed and they did their "triple check" it said I had low risk of audit. We need to form a class action.

H&R Block charged me $270 to prepare my tax returns and as per his guidance I sent the paper copy to IRS on 2nd March 2016 and it's been more than 4 months but still I have not received my federal tax refunds. Now I tried contacting H&R consultant couple of times but he is not available. I dropped some messages as well to call back but never heard back from him.
I also asked H&R consultant to file ITIN number for my spouse and 2-year old kid for which he told me "Since they were also not here for 180 days you cannot file the ITIN number for them." My colleagues also had the same case (they were not here for 180 days) and they contacted some other tax consultants and no one suggested them to prepare 1040NR. Also they prepared W7 form to file ITIN number for spouse and told that since dependent child was not in USA for 2015 he cannot get ITIN but spouse can get ITIN. IRS also approved the ITIN application for spouse. I don't understand why H&R Block is providing wrong information and preparing wrong tax return forms.

I went to H&R Block in Feb, 2016 for my tax preparation in Memphis, TN at the Polo Shop. As with many taxpayers, we leave it to the professionals. LC ** was my preparer. I'd presented all W-2s and other required documents. After he quoted my refund, he hit the submit to IRS button. Immediately, I heard an "Oh, oh." Not a good sound in a tax office. He then admitted to his error that he had not taken all W-2s into consideration. That wasn't my fault, he had ALL my forms. Nothing, I repeat, nothing was withheld. He stated that I would owe the IRS. He called over the branch manager (Fatima). She assured me repeatedly that the peace of mind I'd paid for (although, I was out of my mind to entrust them with my taxes I've learned) would cover his error.
I now owe the IRS over $1,200 due to his error. I was told to reach out to Mark ** District, Mgr. Three emails and multiple calls later, he has never returned my calls or acknowledged me. I learned on 6/30, that the office fabricated on the real reason of the error, and placed it on me. No accountability! I see why there are so many complaints on them. I wouldn't recommend H&R Block to anyone. The services were horrible, and I've been subjected to a cascade of lies. They stand behind their desk, not their customers!!! When I asked him what I was being charged for, he claimed it was noted on the screen, and I'd be able to find out even later. Later, I asked again. He said it was impossible to tell me what I was being charged for by H&R Block. The fact that I was charged over $300, compared to previous years/accountant at $100, and then I wasn't allowed to find out why made the whole experience horrible. I received the Emerald card from H&R Block when I had my taxes done for 2015. The preparer told me about the card and how it was to work. Since I planning a vacation I agreed to the card and had my refund transferred to the Emerald card. I tried to use the card and was told that it had expired because I had not use the card soon enough after it had been issued. I was told that funds were still in the account and all I had to do was go to H&R Block and have another card issued, which I did. I then left the H&R Block office to use the card and it was declined at the store where I was shopping. Calling Emerald services I was told that there was a zero balance in my account, and that the money had been put in my husband's name and account. My husband has been dead for 18 months.
I asked why that had been done and how could I get my money back? I was told that I was not entitled to that money because he was the primary on the taxes. Emerald Services told me that I would have send them a copy of his certificate of death and a copy of his will. We went round about this request. I called H&R Block and they could or would not help me with this problem. It took 2 weeks for H&R Block to resolve the problem. But today when I tried to use the Emerald card the debit card scanner would not accept the card, so the sales person had to enter the card number and my name into the computer to complete the sale. I had been told by H&R Block that all I needed to do was swipe the card and that there would be no problems. Well I will be emptying that account as soon as possible. This has been a very bad experience for me, I doubt that I will be using H&R Block ever again.

My tax return has been assigned to a 'tax professionals' since 04/18/2016. The first 'tax professional' was not qualified to complete a business return and did not use or request the correct documents to calculate the gain from the sale of a investment property. I made a $92k profit on the sale and she insisted that I claim a $50k loss. I know better since I am an Enrolled Agent for taxes and worked for the IRS for 11 years in their business compliance department. The only reason I had it reviewed was because after completing all of my return but reporting the gain I was informed that the forms I needed were not available and a tax professional would have to review it.
My return was assigned to a new 'tax professional' on 05/04/2016 and she has never contacted me nor replied to my emails. I have used the 'report a problem' link twice to report the problem and each time it says someone will contact me within 24 hours but no one has contacted me. It has been so frustrating and I am considering completing the return by hand just to get some relief from this nightmare but I already put so much time into the original preparation of the tax return online.

After using H&R Block for many years I trusted them... Not anymore. This company prepared my taxes with the wrong filing status, omitted a dependent resulting in a very low return - 1/2 of what I would normally get back each year. Then he tried to fix it with a amended tax form. I filed in Feb 2016, up until now... no information about my return. I did not even receive the correct documents when I left the office on S 4th Street Allentown PA. Beware of Jose ** at this office. I am wondering if I should sue them for my processing fee. So I went to hr and told them they said they were going to charge me again to correct something they messed up. I have been back & forth on the phone with customer service and they say is "I will call you back." On March 3 I filed my 2015 taxes jointly with my husband. I also filed for abandoned spouse. All is well to this point however the tax consultant from Millerton, NY 12546 released incorrect information from this point out on when we will receive our income return. The day we filed we were told 3-5 HOURS and that didn't happen so I called back and she couldn't remember what she had told us so she said three weeks. This timeframe goes and still no income refund. I call the office back and she takes a week to get back to me to tell me "I forgot you filed injured spouse so it takes 6 weeks". So I give her the benefit of the doubt and wait the time out and still nothing.
So this office closes April 15th and no later. I call the whole week before to this office and the answer I get from Loraine (the tax consultant) is "I'm out of here by six today and if I find out I'll let you know but I leave at six and the office is closed for the season and this so my last day working for H&R Block and I will do my own stuff on the side but I think it's ridiculous to charge people the amount they are charged!" So needless to say she was more worried about getting out of the office than finishing her unfinished business. So I'm left here with no answers! I call the number again and it redirects me to the Hudson office to a man named Brian. I explain my situation to him and he automatically says "well first off injured spouse takes up to 11 weeks" and I begin to tell him of my experience and he said "yeah I don't know where she got that from because injured spouse takes 11 weeks."
So I I've him the benefit of the doubt and now it's been 12 weeks and still no money... I call the office back and now I'm speaking to someone else who tells me they have no idea about my situation and I should call back Monday and talk to Brian without even trying to help me!!! I'm so done with H&R Block... and by the way I forgot to mention I never received my 2014 state return from when I filed with her the year before! And I still have no answers where that is. Only thing I can think of is that my return was wrong from her end and the IRS corrected the mistake and she didn't want to own up to it. When all is said and done I can say do not go to H&R Block especially in Millerton, NY 12546 if you would like to actually get your return back!!! I count on my return as part of my living and now I'm getting cancellation notices and repo notices for my vehicle. Thank you for nothing H&R Block!!!

I have been going to H&R Block for years with no problems. In February 2016 I went into the H&R Block Office on 75th Avenue and Cactus. I sat down with a representative who I could not understand and she constantly got up to ask the manager questions about my return. She then advised me I needed my original SS Award Letter.
The following day I went back into the office with my SS Award Letter and told the receptionist that I wasn't comfortable with the representative and I wanted the manager to do my taxes. I also told her that I was not in a rush because the representative stated I would have to pay the state $52.00 and would receive a refund in the amount of $145.00 on my federal return. On March 19, 2016 apparently I had an appointment to meet with the manager and return/sign my returns. No one called me and I forgot the appointment.
In April I called the office and asked if my return was complete. They said yes. On April 15, 2016 I went into the office and was escorted to a young man who reviewed my paperwork and said I needed to pay $178.25. I signed all the paperwork and went up to the receptionist, gave her my debit card and she gave me a receipt and my completed paperwork back. They informed me I should be getting my refund in 8-10 days.
I called my bank shortly thereafter and still no payment was added to my checking account. I called H&R Block and the manager said they did not process my paperwork because I still owed them $178.25. I assured the manager that I had the receipt and paid them in full. The Cactus office closed for the season and the manager said I had to go to the Union Hills office and bring a copy of my receipt. I felt like I was a liar. I take care of my 87 year old mother and this was an inconvenience to leave her alone to take care of this matter.
When I got to the Union Hills office the Cactus manager approached me and asked me for the receipt. He made a copy, went on the computer once again and stated that my refund would now be $240.00. I told him that I thought my refund would only be $92.00, apparently I was shocked. He told me he would now process the paperwork. I told him that I wasn't going to pay a late fee and he said he would take care of everything.
I kept calling and calling the manager asking where my refund was. He had no answer. I then put in a complaint with H&R Block, they even gave me a case no. and still to-date no one has contacted me. They keep saying they are looking into it. I asked to speak with the manager of the Union Hills office, but she has not contacted me!
I am retired and want my refund, plus my deposited refunded. I still do not have the proper paperwork in my H&R folder. If this is the way H&R Block treats their customers... it's very very said. I want my money! They have terrible customer service skills. Are they trying to keep my refund money. I will never use this company again!!!

It somehow gave us a credit at the time we did not deserve. Here it is over a year later. Local preparer for H&R Block says they are lobbying against H&R Block on disputes, but the most they can do for us now is give us back the taxes and penalties. Oh and do our taxes for free next year. WHAT? I do not trust them to do it again. Because we opt out of the Peace of Mind, they will not cover it. They admitted they made a mistake and would send me a cheque/check. It has been over half a year and they still haven't reimbursed me. I keep getting the runaround and I'm thinking they're just waiting for me to go away.
The district manager Yohann ** has been unresponsive to say the least and keeps brushing me off by misrepresenting what they're going to do for me. I wanted someone to work with me in finding write-offs and if necessary, allow me to look up necessary data. I was offered a free amendment, however the gentleman showed up at the other preparers desk and took a pretty hostile position with me. He grabbed my student loan papers and said, "You never gave these to me!" But, had he been listening, I did ask about this and I could have pulled up the acct on my phone. However, he was not invested in my issues. He was invested in his own.
I called the corporate office and Mr. ** reached out to me right away. It's been 12 weeks now and I just found out after over 25 calls to Block over the last month that more info was necessary to process the claim. The letter they want was lost by the manager working in the audit. And was notified a month ago to furnish it. She ignored the request and only after my repeated calls did I find out this.
Now I find I have to get this document from IRS and then when they receive it the claim will start over. Another 4 to 6 weeks plus 2 more to process. This claim started in December 2015. It is now May 2016. I have talk to Over 20 different people and not one able to answer any question. They don't know who their managers are, where to reach them or how to proceed. What a joke this company is. I called and asked if they could prepare my US taxes and informed her that we had just moved here from Canada. She said that there was NO problem, that they had an expert on this type of return that they would call. Two weeks went by and we heard NOTHING. Called the office and no one knew anything about our return, in fact the office had been closed. They told us a day later that the documents had been shipped to another location. We never got a call from them, so I called that office and talked to the Senior Accountant. She said she was working on the return and she would get back to us.
We had to call HER back and she said she needed to talk with us in her office. On my day off I traveled 45 minutes to get to her office only to find out that she didn't know how to do the return. She called man in New York (at his home) so that we would talk to him. He didn't know what he was doing either. He said that our Canadian return was wrong and we had to get it corrected first. That was incorrect, the return had been done correctly and by one of the top accounting firms in Canada.
At this point we were told that they couldn't do anything until the Canadian return was corrected so we left. After some discussion between my husband and I we decided to take our return somewhere else. I called the office only to find that it was closed, so I left a message for someone to call me back, no call back. I called (and emailed them) the next day only to be told by their answering service that this office would not reopen again until January of next year. I told them it was imperative that I get a call back that day and was told a message was being sent to her and she would respond. Needless to say 3 days later and nothing. I had to call the corporate office. They told me the office was open today!!!
I have FINALLY gotten my documents back, but will state this. DON'T GO TO THESE PEOPLE, THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING NOR DO THEY CARE!!! If she was a senior accountant, I would really be scared to see what "Junior Accountants " that worked there knew. I am an accountant and owned several of my own successful businesses and know if I were a stockholder in this company, I would be getting out NOW!! Too bad I have to give it one star, otherwise I wouldn't give them any at all.

I filed my taxes online with H&R this year (2016). I felt I needed expert advice. What I got was a hassle trying to get advice and hidden charges everywhere. Yes, you will pay a fee, you do on every online filing system when you have more than basic circumstances, but unlike filing last year (same circumstances) H&R added more to that fee, telling me that I belong in the 'premium' category. Then they charged me another hidden fee for filing my taxes. No, you cannot get advice without paying more. I tried to investigate and was told it would cost me an hourly fee to talk to someone.
Finally I found a phone number and the young man tried to convince me that I agreed to pay all the hidden charges. There are no itemized receipts for these charges, no explanation. I am a computer user for everything. I have very little difficulty navigating my way around websites. The H&R site was difficult, lacked detailed instruction, and could easily confuse a novice user. I informed her that I was separated from my husband and would file as Head of Household. She told me I had to file Married filing Separate (something like that). I told her she was wrong and I really should have walked out at that moment. She asked her manager and the manager stated that yes I could file as HOH. If I would not have read through the IRS website prior to filing my taxes, I would have received $1200 less and I would never have known the difference.
But she was nice and proceeded to complete my taxes. When it came to my SC State return, I asked her about Army National Guard exemptions (I did not know, nor did I research. She said I can exempt $2,424 from my state taxes, but she seemed unsure). I paid $196.95 (wow...this was a standard claim). The next morning I checked on the SC exemptions and it took me less than a minute to find SC Revenue Ruling #09-16. After just a few minutes of reading I figured out that she was definitely wrong and my exemptions should have been double what I received.
I redid my own taxes this morning and discovered that H&R Block shorted me for $201 on Federal and $90 on State taxes. I am interested in retribution in the form of legal group action against H&R Block. I lost over $500 over the last 5 years, that I can tell, since I still have the last 5 years on my computer.

Usually I do my own taxes but with the new health-care laws in effect I did not want to take a chance & do anything incorrectly so we went to H&R Block, first & last time using them EVER! My fiance filed his taxes there & luckily I was there because the guy was inputting the information incorrectly & seemed lost. We knew we both would owe taxes & they gave him a coupon, he receives $50 & the person he refers receives $25 off their preparation. Might as well use it since we owe. I filed mine there but with a different person figuring they would know what they're doing-wrong of course!
I had to guide the lady through my taxes & she was determined the system was incorrect & I should receive the EIC. I had to explain to her 4 times that my income is over the limit & then show her the chart that had the income guidelines. She told me my charges for filing would be $289 & I gave her the referral coupon which would make it $264 but when I go to pay they say it's $296, I explain the lady just told me $289 & they need to apply the $25 off coupon & the lady acts baffled like she doesn't understand. They then tell me with the coupon it comes to $271.
I look through my paperwork again before paying since I had to guide them through my taxes & there's a paper that says my filing fees are $271. So I show the lady at the desk taking payment. So now my fees should really be $246. She comes up with some bs explanation. I paid then asked the lady that filed my taxes how I file for an extension on payment & she has no clue what that is & said I need to send my payment in to the address in my packet & if I call the 1800 they can help me with what I need but make sure I call the correct one. Next year, I'm back to filing my own taxes!! Lesson learned.

Normally I purchase the H&R Block package at Staples for $54. This year I used the online product. It was not as useful but with work it came out ok. To file Federal it was $59.00 and State an additional $39.00. More money, yes, but ok. It said I could file up to 3 additional returns. I have 2 kids with dividends that need to file. I could not find the input for them on the site. Called H&R Block. Told me I would need to redo the $59 and $39 for each return. RIP OFF and the support was rude and just horrible. I spoke to the supervisor Bryant, he was worthless. That said I will be using TurboTax from here on out.

My boyfriend filed his taxes and the so called tax expert told him she didn't need anything to verify his medical so he finished and left the tax building. He gets his state taxes in and H&R took their over 400 out and about two weeks later he finds out he can't get his return without his medical 1095a paper which she said was not needed. So well over two months now he still does not have his tax return. We went there today and they actually charged him money to fax that form to the IRS which is screwed up. It wasn't his fault.
Who do we get a hold of? This is ridiculous. He should get a discount on his filing fee. We are in the middle of buying a house. Well we lost it due to not having our down payment for it. This is their so called well trained tax expert. So when do they start taking responsibility for what they do wrong. We are clients for over 12 years but if it don't get handled properly we are going elsewhere. Please does anybody know the home office number I can call.

My mother was filing my father's final tax return with H&R Block last year. The person doing the filing was not forthcoming with any information and just entered the paperwork. She didn't explain about the RRSP Contributions and didn't explain that she over contributed and that her return for my father would drastically change. When she got her return it was thousands less than what she was told it would be and when questioned she was given the runaround for the rest of the year and was told she needed to deal with an end of life professional tax person. She went to see him finally this year and learned the person had screwed up so badly and it could not be fixed. He admitted that not only they never caught the error but neither did the CRA either. When they call CRA to see if they could fix it and send an amendment they said no and that H&R would have to pay the difference as they would not do anything.
H&R said "we will just retrain our staff" but they will not do anything to rectify the problem, and don't need to take steps further because the original person is no longer with the company. H&R is the worst place to deal with. If you need to do a final tax return or have any RRSP contributions take it to someone that knows how to process these. H&R ONLY CARES ABOUT OVERCHARGING YOU TO DO THE TAXES, NOT WHAT THEY CAN DO TO HELP YOU... Not the first issue we have had with them, just the worst yet.

I have been going to H&R Block in Redding, California for five years. Usually I felt they did ok. But this year they did my taxes and showed I owed $5145 to Fed and $2826 to Calif State. A Total of $7971 Owed in extra taxes. When I asked my tax preparer how could I owe $8000 this year when in the past I had been $1000 or so. He was rude and said "what you are paying in taxes is what some people in this town make." (Like that was supposed to make me feel better). My wife and I work very hard for the money we make. Then he said "well you made $19000 more than last year." Then he said, "Give me the $19000 and I will gladly pay the $8000 for you." Very condescending. After seeing a copy of my wife Driver's License he said, "Oh a Trophy Wife". As if I make so much money I would have a ** on my arm to make me look good. It is insulting to both my wife and me.
So after a stressed and lost sleep for a week I started looking closer at the numbers and found a gross error in our combined incomes. He had misentered the value of my company paid health insurance and 401(k) deposits and added $15,110 to my income. I called the manager who said he would look into it and call me back. He called me back said the entries were accurate. I then said look at the W-2's and tell me that my income was entered correctly. He said he would check and call me back. He called me back and said he found the error and that I only owed $2200 to the Fed. I made an appointment with the manager and found more errors. I am now getting back $888 from the Fed and owe the state $1364. A New tool of $476 dollars that I owe in taxes not almost $8000! I paid $539 to have my taxes done grossly incorrectly. If I had not gone over it myself I would be out $6000.
I told the manager I felt I should get a partial refund for such poor service and the undue stress my wife and I went through for 3 weeks. He said he would try to get me $100 - $200 back but needed to speak with his district manager. Never heard back. I will never use H&R Block. They are untrained data entry people that have no idea what they are doing. While I Sat with the manager we were interrupted at least seven times by other employees asking the manager where to input numbers they didn't know what to do with. They are very expensive and are most likely doing many peoples taxes incorrectly.

Scheduled appt with Greenwich, CT branch via phone. Received confirmation text with appt info. Less than 1 hour prior to appt they call and cancel my appt due to double-booking. The other person I've double-booked with is dealing with this for the SECOND time and thus she gets priority despite "this never happening". The agent I spoke to said, "You do know there are only 4 days left until taxes are due, right?" Yes, that's why I had booked an appointment in advance! Their attempts to solve this problem were ridiculously weak. The agent I spoke to also made it a gender issue and was clearly sexist.
The manager couldn't fix anything if he tried. I had to convince them that it was a reasonable request for them to fix the issue, instead of making it my problem. Horrendous customer service. The kicker is that they re-arranged my appointment with another local branch. They told me 1:30. I got a confirmation text for 2:00. I called the Hope Street Stamford branch manager to get a real confirmation. She told me to come in at 10:30 (an hour prior to when we were speaking!) And now I'm supposed to trust them to do my taxes when they cannot even book a basic appointment-twice?

I also had a loss carry over but those 5 figures were all she had to deal with. The fee was $360 and given the deadline I was left with no alternative but to pay it. Never use H&R Block. Why? Friday, April 8th, I went into my local H&R block to TRY and get help with an address issue for my federal tax return. Upon entering the office I spoke with Dawn or Don idk how she spells it. When explaining my issue to the receptionist, Dawn, she looked very disinterested and I could tell, being in her shoes myself before, she wanted me to stop talking. So I said well don't worry this isn't your problem. I just need a tax preparation specialist to help me with faxing the proper documents to update my address. The Office Manager (LTP #**, at store location 36320 on 82nd ave in Happy Valley OR) was able to help me. Eager to have my issue resolved she told me it would be very possible to have my federal refund put on an emerald card that day.
Mind you, my original check for my federal return was sent back to H&R due to the inability to deliver to my home address. (Which btw, my state refund showed up just fine). When this woman returned from her office, which she didn't even invite me into her office so that I may possibly watch my issue be resolved, she said there was nothing more she could do than fax the forms she had just sent to try and get my return sent to the right place. Frustrated, I waited in the lobby of store 36320 and called the hotline available, which Wendy said was my only option, to make sure the fax had gone through. The manager of this store, WENDY **, told me at this point there was nothing more she could do. Mind you I had already had a horrible experience trying to get this whole situation settled over the phone.
Still not having an answer to my question and the ability to verify my address had indeed been updated, Wendy asked me to leave her store because I was disrupting her guests due to the fact I was trying to resolve my issue. Fed up, I trusted Wendy and went on my way. April 13th 2016, I called into H&R Block and was told my documents, Wendy said she had faxed, were not faxed/completed properly. Turns out the "tax professional" Wendy did not fill out her part of the form. Also, my direct deposit information was not received when Wendy "faxed" it in. I walked in to H&R Block 36320 in Happy Valley OR with a positive attitude to hopefully get my issue resolved. I asked Dawn at the front desk if I could speak with Wendy. When Wendy came out I asked how her day was going. She said "Well, I was doing good. How can I help you?"
Never before in my life have I experienced such horrible and outrageous disrespect from someone who was suppose to provide customer service. When I asked her to help me fill out the rest of the form and fax it in, she said she couldn't do it. Frustrated once again, I left. I had to contact the district manager of Wendy's Branch (who Wendy said didn't exist during my first visit when I asked to speak to her manager) to convince Wendy she needed to fully fill out my tax form.
After I contacted Wendy's manager, mind you the manager of a manager, and we concluded that Wendy did not know how to fill out the form properly, I thought I would give Wendy a chance to apologize for her poor customer service/lack of effort and possibly turn this situation around. When I asked Wendy for an apology for her mistake, she said "Well I'm sorry that you had to go through this." I said "You aren't sorry for how you have treated me? You aren't sorry for faxing an incompleted form?" Here is the best part! Wendy says "It's not my job to read the form." Whaaaaaaat?!? Yes it is!!! Never use H&R Block. Why? Because they hire people like Wendy ** LPT# **, Office manager of store 36320.

This is very important to read. Every part of my experience with H&R has been horrible. A real nightmare. My husband and I are outraged. First, fee to file is over $350. We ask questions, they can't answer. I'm beyond concerned how H&R continues to represent themselves with employees that are overwhelmed with customers they can't handle for years! H&R failed all our expectations and others I've spoke with to be a reputable knowledgeable company to handle IRS government tax relations.
This is not my opinion, this is a fact of proof in writing. This office location announce a large majority of other offices in USA. My husband and I filed in Feb. 2016, there was a second part mailed a week later to reply/file and we had to do our own research because no tax preparer at H&R returned our calls or emails! We got mailed tax forms that needed immediate response/deadline. Our tax preparer was either not in office when I went in or too busy to help on the spot. I was a number on her list that even other preparers said couldn't help because only she knew my case or how to handle it. I was shocked to get the runaround with no return calls or emails as I requested ASAP. I have been in H&R 6 years and still no one can help me? I'm on my way to the office right now to speak to a manager again for the 7th time. This is incredibly unbelievable. P.S. She stated that she would talk to the office manager and get back with me. I was told 4 days later that I would be charged $350. I declined and had my taxes completed by a CPA for $290. Went to a local H&R Block to file my tax. About 3 days later, I realized I gave them wrong account number. Called their toll free number. It was Sunday so was told to call back Monday at 9 am mountain time. I called and was told to go back to the location where I filed my tax and have them fill out a form and fax it to them and they will be able correct it in about three to five business days. So I went back to the office and talked to the guy who helped me with the filling. He said he doesn't know what I was talking about, he never had to do this before and he was busy and want to go back to his business. He basically told me all he's supposed to do was file it and it was my business to go figure it out, he doesn't wanna waste his time with me.
So I called the toll free number again. I was asked if I paid upfront or they're going to deduct it from my tax return. I said I already paid. She then transferred me to their accounting department where I was on hold for 45 minutes. This guy answered asked all my personal info and told me that I was not in their system. I told him I talked to someone earlier and they were able to pull up my info. He put me on hold for another 15 minutes and then the phone disconnected. I didn't know if that was on purpose or not so I called back.
Again same questions all over again. Was asked if I've already paid them or not which of course I answered 'yes' and they transferred me to their accounting department where I was on hold for 1 & 1/2 hour. This lady finally answered, asked my personal info and put me on hold for about 20 minutes and when she came back, she keep saying "hello, hello" and hung up the phone while I was speaking. My husband and I went to file our taxes and realized we were missing some information about our cross-country move and one of my W-2 forms from the other state. Also Leah who was doing our return did not know what one of the numbers was on my husband's W-2 so we needed to inquire about that from his employer. We filed most of the information but said we would drop off the rest of the information soon. I came back a week or two later and left my packet including all of my W-2 forms, all of my receipts, and the previous year's taxes. I did not hear from Leah so I called the next week to ask if she had received our documents. She told me yes she did and had left me a message saying so. I told her I had not received any message from her.
We came in a week or two later to finalize and submit our taxes. Leah was not there and the woman helping us said she could not find any of our documentation but that Leah would come in early the following day to double check and call us back. We confirmed that they had the correct number to reach me at. I did not hear back from her. Two days later another employee called us to say that Leah could not find the information and claimed that we had taken everything with us and further that she would be out of the country until March 31 and no one else could help us in the meantime. I then called the H&R Block's main line and a case was started.
I was called a week later and told the original person working on my case was no longer working with them and a new person was handling my case. I was very angry by this point, the woman handling my case referred to me continually by "Miss" and my first name which I also found very disrespectful. She told me she had spoken with the office manager and that we should come to a final resolution and that we would not have to pay for our tax preparation, which I found satisfactory. My husband went to the office immediately and was told we could have $50 off of the preparation. When he disagreed they called the main line again and he was told there were no notes in our file. I have not been contacted a single time by the office handling our return. Even the main line has only contacted me once.
The regional manager has finally been contacted. He did call me immediately and claims that we will have a resolution by Monday, but taxes are due next week. We started this whole process over two months ago. I can say I will never use them again and would actively discourage anyone else from using. Not just for losing our information but more so for the lack of follow through we have received from H&R Block and the inability to come to a resolution in a timely manner.

The tax 2015 online H&R Block calculates the above as CAPITAL GAIN. All of sudden I owe lot of money to CRA in error of course. This issue has been moved to senior people at the H&R. I received a bill for $786, for which I wrote a check on one of my accounts at PNC Bank. The tax preparer told me that my check would be processed electronically - as it had been in previous years. After absenting himself for a few minutes, he returned my voided check to me and asked me to sign a slip of paper which he said was simply to acknowledge that I would owe $30 if my check bounced. Upon reviewing my bank account the following Tuesday, I discovered that Block Advisors had charged my bank account $875 instead of the actual $786 amount of my check. When I complained to the office, the manager refused to rectify the matter, referring to the slip of paper that I had signed, in which they had slipped the higher amount without calling it to my attention.

Hello, I have a problem with the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) and H&R block who has done my tax returns for 4 years. I know some tax rules but not all, that is what I pay H&R block to prepare my taxes. I invested in the stock market using a credit line and thought I could deduct the interest on the borrowed money. I found out the hard way when I received a letter from the CRA saying I owe them 5200.00 for 2013 and 2014 for falsely claiming the interest. Now why didn't H&R block catch this? I found out by calling CRA that only dividend paying stocks are allowed. Why didn't H&R block tell me this? Now I believe CRA is investigating 2011 and 2012 which was filed the same way and I think I am going to pay back the interest I claimed on these two years again. Isn't this H&R Block's fault for filing incorrectly or notifying me to let me know I couldn't claim the interest? What do you think I should do here?

I needed a print out of a previous year's tax return for the purposes of getting a mortgage. I called ahead to the office I had gone to in previous years and asked if I dropped by after work, would it be possible for them to print out my return for 2013. The person I spoke to on the phone stated that as long as I brought in my id, they'd be able to help me. So I said, "Great! What are your hours?" The person stated, "we are open until 9." So I said that's wonderful and I would be dropping by that evening. (This would be the ideal time for the person to set an appointment if it was necessary, which they did not.)
So I stopped in and waited by the front desk to be greeted. (The sign on the door, by the way, said walk-ins welcome.) Several minutes later, a gentleman walked over and asked what I was in for. I again explained my scenario, which he immediately became visibly aggravated that I was there. He stated that I should have made an appointment and that they had back to back appointments set. Made it sound like it was going to be an incredibly long time to be seen and like it was such an inconvenience for me to just drop in.
Then another employee interrupted him and said if I was willing to wait between 5 and 10 mins she'd be happy to help me. Five to ten minutes? That's nothing. Was happy to wait to get what I needed. I'm pretty sure the woman took less than ten minutes to see me and less than that to print it out. It was a fairly quick transaction for the big stink the man made at the door. I don't know what I expected, but for a business with a sign on the door that states, "Walk ins welcome," I guess I kind of expected to feel well... welcomed! Some customer service training is needed here!

I don't usually ever write a review but people need to know and how mad I am! Unreal. I’ve been going through H&R Block for 14 years now. Never been charged $550 to do my taxes as my brother has same tax credits and claimants as myself and was charged $220! H&R Block is unbelievably the biggest rip off I've ever seen! Even when the lady told me the amount I said, “I don't want to go through with this, it's too much to pay”. She told me it's too late to pull out! They see the tax refund you're gonna get and think it’s ok to make some price up as they go! 100% false advertisement! Totally took advantage of me and need to be shut down as I'm looking to take this to the next level and take legal action! Anyone reading this go through TurboTax or another tax place. There's no reason to be charged outrageous by a multi-million-dollar business especially one that's taking advantage of people!!!

As a word of advice please be very careful when you are filing your taxes through the IRS Free-file program tax software partners. It will always start free but then they will find a way to scam you out of your money and they are very good at it. Last weekend I filed my taxes using the IRS Free-File program, through H&R block and had a horrible consumer experience. I also started a petition to see if we can gather support to stop these dishonest business practices commonly used by tax preparation software companies. Always read the fine print and ignore the ads. Use the H&R Block Software at your own peril.

I did not file with them last year. Ad on TV never said you had to be a old customer to file. I gave a check. They took my money right out of my bank before I could think about it. Way too high for a simple straight tax 1040.
Updated review: May 14, 2016
I wrote a review on H&R Block, seems as if they made an error on my taxes last year. Because of the mistake I owed the IRS $18,000.00 this year and $18,000.00 last year and another $4000.00 for quarterlies. I did owe the money but I got a huge refund last year because the taxes were filed wrong and I should not have. I did owe the money but I would have handled it much differently had it been figured correctly. I questioned the preparer why I was not paying quarterly's and she said I did not have to, so wrong. H&R Block came back with the peace of mind I paid for. They refunded my cost of the tax preparer for 2014, nearly $400.00. I don't know if they paid the penalties but they said they would. I did pay over $200. In interest, they also sent me a check for $5500.00 for compensation.
They followed through with what they advertise and I talked to a very professional lady from their corporate office who handled the problem for me. Would I go back? You know I am just a little old retired lady without a lot of deductions. I am on a fixed income. I think I pay way too much for tax preparation so I will probably go with a CPA for half the cost. If that person makes a mistake I will be out the money but I will be extremely careful in the future and go over every tax form. Maybe I should take a little more responsibility for my taxes. Overall, H&R Block did what they advertise and I am impressed with that.

Upon filing my taxes today I learned I owe $15,000 plus for 2015. Upon further investigation I learned I owe at least that much for last year. It appears the "lady" used one month of alimony instead of one year. The same person filed my taxes for 2014. When I questioned why I did not have to send money quarterly she said it was not necessary. I was receiving a large refund but I had a forced sale on stocks. It was my first year being divorced, I went to a supposedly professional. I paid $420. each year for tax filing. I am not good at taxes and need to have someone that know what they are doing. Year 2013, the same lady did my taxes for 2013 and 2014, a different lady did my taxes this year. I did not pay nearly as much the first year.
I am extremely concerned that I owe the government money. I just called the lady back that did my taxes today and questioned her about the amended return. She told me verbatim, "I will get to it when I have time, it may be May it may be the next couple of days." I will have penalties. I was charged extra for some type of guarantee. I guess that was so much chatter. Do not waste your money, it may end up costing you way more than it should. The only reason I gave one star is because there are no minus stars.

Now we owe 12K due to fees and the like. We went to them in March of 2015 with this information, and it is now exactly a year later without any resolution whatsoever. "We're looking into it" Bull. I have used H&R Block services in the past dating back about 15 years or so. Mainly in their office locations where I happened to live at the time. I have a very small business as a tradesperson in building of homes. Last year I used them (at an office location) because I had moved in 2014 and wanted to be sure my taxes were filed correctly with the proper towns, cities, etc. So after the gentleman took all my information, entered it into his computer (which took all of 20 minutes) he prints me out a bill for his services; Wow!! $503.00 - I almost lost my breath. One 1040EZ, Schedule C and change of address.
So this year I figured I would do my taxes on their online service and save myself all that money. My gross sales are less than $10,000 a year in this business so to pay $500 for the tax return is more than 5% of my gross sales which is unbelievable. Upon starting my Online filing I decided to use Best of Both so I can have an “expert” review my return before it is filed with the IRS. I figured the $79 was worth it. Then the nightmare began. Hours of attempting to navigate through their software maze of questions that had nothing to do with my return. Trying to figure out how I got to one screen and back to another one that I think I had to go to. Hours and hours of betting lost in their system.
Several times I just had to log out and come back to it another day due to frustration of it all. Many of their online help does not address the issues I had except with short sentences that were not very informative at all. So now I was caught up with all my information being in their system and having no choice but to finish it and file it. But again decided at the end of this horrible experience I do not want to have someone review my return before I file it. So I went to my account and now instead of owing them the $79 it went up to $99, why? I have no clue. It still said the best of both.
So I drew the line and got frustrated enough to call their customer support line (that in itself was a terrifying experience). Hours of trying to get someone on the line that was not a computer talking to me. So I get this guy on the line that spoke so quickly I finally had to tell him “Slow down. I can't understand anything you are saying”. Well, come to find out for me to back out of best of both or what he called “downgrade” my service all my previous work would have to be lost. I said, “What? are you kidding me?!” So I just hung up the phone.
This is their way to make sure you pay them if you change your mind during the process. I spent countless hours entering all the information mainly because the navigation was so terrible and then come to find out if I decide I don't want the best of both I would have to lose all of the information I already entered and do it all again. No way!! So now I am stuck paying that money just so I can file my taxes. URGH!!

Generally terrible experience which started out well. I went initially to the H&R Block Northpoint Office to check cost for preparing a tax return for a small trust I have held entirely in one account at Schwab. The two young women there were very pleasant and eager to be helpful and said there was a 50% off offer for new customers so it should be around $100 but they needed to have their more experienced supervisor look at it. Next day they called me back and said only the H&R block Sansome St. office could do trust returns and they would transmit there the documents I left with them (a copy of the return from the prior year, 2014 and the current 1099 from Schwab). I waited a day to call the H&R Block Sansome St. office- but they hadn't received anything and didn't know anything about it but they would take care of it. Next day no call so I called them; they still didn't know about it as the Trust preparer was at another office.
Finally I got here and she said, after some prodding, "Trust returns start at $400 or $500" so I said "Thank you but no; please return the documents" and she said they would be sent by UPS to me going out Monday as this was a Friday. I waited a week and... NOTHING. I called again and spoke to the manager who didn't know where the documents were. Finally I called the main national H&R Block number and got someone who said they would investigate after I said I was starting a BBB complaint and was going to check into tax preparer regulatory authorities with the IRS. Finally after another two days they called and said they would be sent by UPS. After another two days I finally got my documents back today- with not even an apology. H&R Block- never, never, never again!

I am so disappointed with my experience with H&R block. It is true, filing on their website "shows" that you will get the maximum refund and I fell for it. I completed my tax application, paid for the service, hoping that they would help me to file it correctly. Upon completing my application, I was not able to submit due to an error and the support team member, to fix the error, asked me to uncheck a box that would submit my tax application without form 8962. She mentioned it will not be a problem and they will take care of any issue if raised by the IRS.
I did not get my refund even after 7 weeks and received a mail from the IRS asking me to submit my form 8962. I called them up today and asked why they provided me the wrong information to not to submit form 8962 and asked for a refund or help me to file my 8962. The support team member took 32 minutes to discuss with his supervisor, came back and said they cannot issue a refund or help me in filing it and I have to do it by myself. I have been using TurboTax before but never had such a problem. They do not provide the support they promise, even if you are a paid member. So, just hope that your application should get through without any issue AND do not believe the information given by their "tax professionals". I would suggest doing your own research.

I was in a rush because I had to drive quite a distance back to work and I did not want to be late. In a hurry, I signed all the documents necessary and this old lady took her precious time. Before filing, I emphasized to my husband not to rush the income tax return process; I told him not to fall for the "$500 loan immediate tax return" deal. It was imperative to save money by being patient. So when he made his selection, he chose to do the regular filing which never really costs more than $10-20. After the filing process, I learned that we had been charged almost $400. It is now months later and we still have not received our refund. WORST TAX RIP OFF EVER!

Used this company's software for 7th or 8th time again this year, but should have known better after finding a mistake in their software and calling them 3-4 times and them not believing me. Anyway, pretty much wound up on a screen that would not let me opt out of having a tax professional review my return in 48-72 hrs and paying a lot higher fee. Called their 800# and reps say they can't reverse my choice without deleting hours of information I had already entered. So... decided to pay the price myself for their trickery and grin and bear the experience of dealing with them for one last tax year. Huge mistake and giving them way too much credit by hindsight.
Needless to say it took 10 days (not the promised 2-3 days) to have their tax professional contact me at nearly 8 pm at night (they close at 9 pm) on the 10th day. I was not happy with him or the online product that had let me make an appt. for ** off Jones St. in Omaha, NE for 10 am when he is a part-time employee and one of only 2 in that office I found out that the online program can flip you to finish and unlock your taxes after their review so they can be filed.
The online program gave me a list of 5-7 items to attach (sorry wasn't prepared for any of this to happen and was working off paper copies of all my W-2's, 1099s, etc) so I copied everything off and printed out the page I was frozen on and attached everything. Made an appt. for 10 am on Monday, March 14th and walked in the office and the receptionist dropped the bomb on me he only worked nights and would have him call me. He never did until 10 days later. And he wanted more support documentation for my return that I didn't want to waste my time to copy, drop off and wait 10 more days for him to look through to release the hold on my return and file it. Called the 800 # and they say if I want it unfrozen they will not refund the $116 already charged to me and debited from my checking account; they will also erase everything I entered and make me start over from scratch.
They can steal your money with a keystroke, but aren't willing to give it back with a keystroke. Customer service reps have told me twice they have no way to unlock my return and keep my data. What kind of a corporate culture promotes such thievery and trickery? Guess what? They have lost me as a customer FOREVER now and as many people as I can warn to stay clear of them. Shame on them.
I spent until nearly 2 am last night re-entering all my data into Turbo Tax online and will gladly pay again to get my taxes back under my control and away from their lies and trickery. For everyone out there wanting their customer service # it is: 855-897-8639. They make it difficult to even contact them to complain, which should be a huge red flag to all of us consumers. If you can't easily find a contact number for the corporate office, then DON'T USE THEM!

She rushed my agent as we were verifying property taxes with the county treasurer on the phone although I was the only customer in the building while three other employees were idle in the office and no other customers were present. Even the waiting room was void of anyone. Why she cast her sense of urgency upon us at $300.00 an hour was beyond me.
I reserved this appointment and took one day off from work (as a day of vacation) to ensure my taxes would be finished, done, complete. I will avoid names, so reluctantly I called H&R Block and filed a complaint (this is a first ever). I took my returns from last year to a new tax professional. Immediately she noticed that I had not taken the American Opportunity credit. With 2 kids in college that was a refund of $2500 for last year alone. Certainly would have helped last year when they told me I owed $5000 to federal and state! Two years ago, a mistake was made on my tax return. It was noticed last year, and the girl asked if I wanted it fixed. I said yes, because it would accrue interest if I left it. I asked for a reassessment, and received a bill from Revenue Canada. She said to take the bill to H&R, and the interest accrued to that point would be paid by H&R.
The person I talked to at their office said "anyone with any common sense would have known there was an error". So now that he has determined I am stupid (I don't know what he is saying about his tax professional), he will not help me. When I persisted, he said he would escalate it. After several months and many phone calls, I phoned the 1-800 number and was put to another person.
He said I should probably get the interest paid, but the girl that said that should have documented it on my file. I have been trying for a year now to talk to someone who can make a decision, but that person is unwilling to talk. Is this the way their business is run? Who is really stupid? H&R Block prepared our federal and state taxes in 2014. The individual who prepared our taxes made us residents of a State that we do not live in. It was only after speaking with a local CPA that the error was brought to my attention. It took H&R Block approximately 5 months to identify someone who could resolve the problem. We are now in the process of preparing our 2015 taxes and come to find out that we overpaid our Federal taxes in 2014 as well. It has been a horrible, horrible experience and I have come to the conclusion that the staff is only qualified to handle the 1040 EZ forms. Their level of expertise is abysmal. I would highly caution anyone when considering H&R Block. They do not have the talent nor do they recruit the level of talent needed to prepare semi-complex taxes.

The experience has been a nightmare. I attempted to help my 21-year-old son out by e-filing his taxes. A week later I received an email stating that it was rejected by the IRS due to a pin number. I attempted to contact H&R Block for help. I was told that the H&R Block office has nothing to do with the online service. WHAT? I was told that they did not have a contact number for support, customer service and was not affiliated with the online service in any way, shape or form. How could this be?
I'm sure that someone is blowing smoke up my... The only number listed on the site is to IRS who tells me that they have not received his taxes (my son). WHAT DO I DO? I know have a twenty-year-old asking me, "MOM, WHERE IS MY MONEY?" I went on the IRS site to retrieve a pin number and it tells me the information is not matching. Should I refile, how do I get my fee back from H&R Block. Where is a live person. This has GOT to be illegal. Each review should be forwarded to the attorney general.

While waiting, another client walked into the place around 11:55 am, she had an appointment at 12 pm. ** finished with her current client, so OBVIOUSLY it was my turn. However, she decided to transfer me to another colleague of hers, and take the 12 pm client.
I talked to the Lady and told her that I specifically made the appointment with ** just because she knows my situation. And it's NOT FAIR to take the 12 pm client while I waited for almost half an hour. The Lady (I don't know her name) got upset. ** just ignored the whole situation and I did NOT even get anything done. BOTTOM LINE: this place will waste your time, try another H&R Block office. After arriving at the appointment and after completing the form they tell me they cannot help me with the interest on the back taxes. I was charged $179.06 for them to do a short form tax return. They also talked me into a visa card that they told me was free to get my return credited to because the lying ** told me that IRS does not send a paper check in the mail anymore, another lie. She slapped the card down on the desk and laughed and said "you won't need it anyway because they will probably take it all anyway."
On my receipt I was charged $16.00 for the card. I also found out that they deduct a charge on the card if you do use it. I made a complaint with the District Manager that took two days to call me back. After I asked his secretary for his boss' number which she stated she did not have I told her "well I figure out who to call then" and hung up. Within 15 min he called me back. I told him what happened. He stated he would call that branch and call me right back, been waiting three days now for him to call back. The service they performed I could have done myself. Well, I sit down with the bookkeeper, and learn that they have a MINIMUM fee of $100. That's NOT what the clerk told me, and I told the bookkeeper this. I have used H&R Block for every return I have prepared in the last 15+ years of filing my taxes. I used to believe that if there were problems, I had someone in my corner that would fix them by doing it that way instead of the numerous free avenues. I have never gotten to test that theory until this year, and I found that doing it myself is the better route, because that's the route that H&R Block takes with its customers anyways.
I sat for 2 hours and paid almost $200 to have someone fumble their way through a 1040EZ that should have taken less than half an hour. I moved in the previous year, so I provided both my previous and current addresses. No change of address form was filled out. The wrong school district was used and I suddenly owed the state almost $100. There were numerous errors made. The bank information that was provided entered incorrectly. My Federal file was accepted, but the state kicked my file back and said there were too many errors. I spent ANOTHER hour in a different HRB office because that's how long it took to undo all the errors the first person made.
Today marks 60 days since I e-filed from an HRB office, and I have not received my refund yet. I finally spent the time to call the IRS. My return was sent over a month ago, so call my bank. I call my bank, they never received anything. Spent another hour calling the IRS, was finally given the banking information that my return was sent to, but they could not access it. I hung up and Googled the routing number, and for 5 weeks my return has been sitting in an HR Block account. And THAT'S when my day turned from tolerable to me wanting to break things.
First off, the reason that I had not received anything from HR Block is because there is magically a debt owed from 3 years ago that I never heard anything about that is almost the exact amount of my current year's return that's owed to me. The best part is that was the year that someone got a hold of my W2's and filed in my name - I've already had to fill out countless forms with the IRS, file a police investigation, and wait 9 months before that money was returned to me.
How do I owe you ANYTHING for that, and why did I not hear about it for 3 years? When I inquired, I was told I needed to speak to the person who prepared that return for me. Of course, most businesses do all their work on computers so they can reference that information - I work as a friggin' valet, a job with minimal importance to anyone - and can still look up past customers at the drop of a dime. Nope. I have to wait until 6:15 PM tonight for that person to call me back.
Then I asked if, since there were so many mistakes with a form that is arguably the most straightforward tax return to prepare, that the exorbitant price of $187 for prep could be returned to me, because all of this mess started with H&R Block. WELL... I'd have to file a complaint and go into the office and see if they could make reparations with me there, so I was basically told that HRB does not police the activity of or take responsibility for their own employees that operate under their company name, and I'd have to work it out with that office.
So, let's recap - I gave them almost $200 to do a one-page 1040EZ with one W2 and an address change, and the result of all that is 60 days later, I have zero money, am likely getting audited by the State, have all my money being held in limbo because of a supposed debt that no one mentioned until I filed a return that was suspiciously close to the exact dollar amount I was supposed to get back, that "debt" is being validated by a return that was a crime against me to begin with, and the only way for me to solve ANY of it is to do it all myself?
I will never (there is not enough stress in the known universe for me to put on that to demonstrate my resolve), EVER set foot in an HR Block again, and they will never see another dime of my money. This is the worst customer service I have ever encountered (and I have Time Warner Cable!!), and I am beyond blown away at how little they are willing to do when everything that has happened is a direct result of their own negligence. I used to be a fan and would have recommended them. Pretty sure they've cured me of that for life. Stay away.

I have been a client of H&R Block in Redmond, Oregon, for over ten years. Last year (2015) my tax preparer retired and I was given a different preparer. After having my taxes prepared and upon returning home I noticed I was charged almost twice as much as last year. I called Redmond H&R Block and questioned the difference in fees. I was told the message would be given to the tax person. I received a message on my phone stating that my previous tax preparer was being nice and had given me discounts on the forms (rather expensive forms?).
I don’t think she would have done anything unethical and was wondering why I pay $200 more for my tax fees because she retired. Nothing has changed on my side except my income went down; I didn’t work part-time last year so I, possibly, used even less forms this year. I’m a senior, could someone explain??? $200 is quite a lot of money for someone on Social Security.
This is what I sent after getting NO reply to either of my TWO emails. I did make phone contact on 2/27, the day after my taxes were prepared. ALMOST DOUBLE FEES (3/7/16). Trying again. I would like to think I have received no response to my “Opinion” in the last week was because somehow you had not received it. I didn’t even get an automated form letter stating my Opinion has been received.

I currently live in Mustang, Oklahoma. The town is very small and the location that we have prepare our taxes is family owned. We have lived here 3 years, and gone to the same location 3 times, although the past two years has been terrible. The first year a gentleman who was not a part of the family business prepared our taxes for us and it was a great experience. The last two years the daughter of the family owned business representing H&R block prepared our taxes and it was horrible.
She looked as if she had done hard drugs for many years, making it almost unbearable to deal with, whipping through our preparation and being very vague with questions me and my wife had regarding our preparation. I never received less of a refund than the past two years leading me to believe that she was making mistakes that were costing me money. I am going to take my information to someone else to review. This year I decided to bring a friend to have their taxes prepared by H&R also. Most tax preparation companies reward you for referrals. Not this location. She said that they are still figuring out the rules and neither I nor my referral would receive any discount or compensation. Then later stated that she was giving other people the benefits as she chose. Very shady. I can't stand small business owners that represent another company and do not follow policy. I will never use H&R block EVER AGAIN.

I am a bandleader and I have a partner that shares the expenses. We have been going to H&R Block for the past 3 years because we trusted the company brand name. The first year we went it cost us $50 just to prepare the 1099 forms, which was done in a couple of days by Helen **, and we thought this was very reasonable. We returned last year and a guy named Ken ** did the forms and charged us $75, a 50% markup from the prior year! We weren't happy but we paid and moved on. This year, 2016, we again went to the H&R Block of prior years. This time the service cost $90, and the preparer didn't include 2 of the employees on the form and had us come back on top of that.
He is the senior preparer in the office and considered a "Master Tax Advisor", but wasn't able to complete the forms as accurately as Miss ** nor as fast! He then went on to say he was calling the regional director to see if he could discount the pricing. I am a manager myself and a small business owner and have also worked in customer service and know for a fact that even the first level of customer service can give a discount. The audacity of a person in his position to assume that everyone is so ignorant and gullible to believe such "hogwash!" (I am going to refrain from using other choice vocabulary to describe what I actually think). This is hopefully going to reach thousands of people and thus tarnish the reputable name of the H&R Block Tax Company!
I was deeply offended by the 80% markup of the service, and the time it took, as well as the smug attitude of Kenneth **. I will never use this company again, and will definitely try my best to refer people I know to use Liberty and other companies as a result! I am a very unsatisfied customer and haven't even filed my personal taxes yet and will use Liberty. If I could protest and carry a sign to persuade people not to go in there I would. That's how irritated I am over this. My personal rating of this place is 1/2 a star, and that's only because he finally finished it.

After trying to contact this person for a week and working with H&R Block support, I found out the person no longer work for nor had access to the system to review my taxes. So then I had to reassign it to another tax professional.
This new person went over the 48 and 72 hrs. required review time. Once she review it, she had questions which I answered. I answered the questions and then I had to go into the system to approve my return. After I reviewed my return, I contacted the Tax professional to electronically file. She told me she filed it after I approved it. Then I went to check the status under H&R Block. It showed my federal return was not filed and my state returns were pending e-file. I added a bunch of message for the tax professional online but she does not respond. I called her and she said there was a technical issues and she escalated it with tech support.
Bottom line is 3 weeks later, H&R Block still has not e-filed my return and offer not solutions. I requested the tax professional mail overnight my return the next day and send me the tracking numbers. She said "ok". 3 days later, I still do not have my tracking number for the paper mailing, the e-file issue still not resolved, and the tax professional has not responded to my online message.
Daily I have had to check the status and follow up for over 3 weeks now. Now I am trying to get my entire refund and file with another provider but no luck with my refund. This business is horrible. They do a horrible job or no job with customer follow-up. The worst customer service I have ever seen. I would never use them again nor do I recommend anyone use them. In fact, I recommend this business be shut down immediately. It operates like a none educated, not trained mom and pop business with two employees trying to service the entire state and or country. My fiancée has used the online version of H&R Block for several years but this year's experience was atrocious. After hours of struggling to get the right info in the right places (and she has a fairly simple return), she submitted her federal return. Only then did her expected state refund increase dramatically, to more than she paid in withheld state taxes!
After more than an hour on the phone with tech support -- he was slow, both in speech and in problem-solving -- we identified a form that had erroneous data in it (still not clear how it got there). After deleting the erroneous data and repeating the state calculations, the error would NOT go away. We finally came up with a solution ourselves, not the tech guy. But the federal return, which we had filed electronically two hours earlier, was no longer correct!
We were offered no consolation or accommodation, only the option to book an in-office appointment the next day to address the error. Scheduling that took him another 5-10 minutes, and he couldn't even tell us if there would be charge for the appointment. We called the local office the next morning, were told there would be no charge, and they confirmed only the correction process we could take if the return was accepted. This took another 35 minutes on the phone but we cancelled the appointment. This return took over 8 hours of entry, hair-pulling, holding, fixing, and troubleshooting time, and would have taken less than 2 hours by paper. Done with H&R Block.

I made an appointment online, after seeing hundreds of advertisements about the company filing taxes for $9.99. While at the appointment, after the woman had already done my taxes, she informed me that I owed $129. I asked about the price advertised on the website of $9.99 and she told me that the price was only if you file with them online. Nowhere in the advertisements did I see that, and I even went back to the site after my appointment to make sure that I wasn't mistaken. I wasn't. I couldn't find the disclaimer anywhere.

I had a more complicated tax situation this year, so I decided to go to a tax professional. I went to H&R Block. Huge mistake. The decision nearly cost me $7,000. I am an individual, last year I purchased a home, I have a ROTH IRA. I was told I owed $7,000 in taxes. SEVEN GRAND. To me, it seems like if there is this high of a jump in someones tax history, and the situation seems clearly unusual and unexpected to the individual, the tax professional would do the research (any research) to determine the severe tax debt incurred.
After leaving the office, nearly in tears, trying to figure out how I can cover this obscene amount of money that I owe, I started asking questions. I talked to my accountant friends, I called Charles ** who holds my Roth IRA all told me the same thing: H&R Block is WRONG. I went back to H&R Block to argue my case. I was told by the H&R representative that Charles ** was in the wrong, I would have to get a corrected 1099, and I would be charged $250 to file the amendment. I explained that Charles ** told me H&R Block could call them directly and they would explain my 1099 to them directly.
Instead, my tax representative, clearly annoyed and doubtful, questioned an associate in the office. She then called her supervisor in another office and explained my situation. When she returned to me, she informed me that her boss laughed at my claims (customer service here was lacking. I was being MOCKED), and told me to wait. Fifteen minutes later (I was happy to wait), she approached me, tail between her legs, and said "turns out Charles ** was correct, we will fix the error".
Everyone makes mistakes. But if my tax representative at H&R Block was to be personally charged $7,000, Im guessing she would have done a little more research into the situation instead of just handing me the bill and calling it good. If a tax situation arises that is unfamiliar to the accountant or is CLEARLY unexpected by the individual filing taxes, the tax representative should be trained to investigate, ask questions, do the research. Dont just deliver bad news and look the other way, hoping youre right. Think about the situation she was placing me in? What if I hadnt asked the right questions elsewhere? What if I would have trusted her entirely, taken a loan to pay the bill, gone in debt, or worse?
My experience should be used as a training tool for your representatives in the future: ask questions if you are unfamiliar with a tax scenario and very simply do not belittle your customer when you may have to stand up to a mistake. Because of this aggravating and potentially damaging experience, I will NEVER go to H&R Block again. I will advise all of my friends, family, and associates to follow suit.

I had my taxes prepared by Mr. ** on 2/4/16 at the Bridge St. office in Weymouth Ma. First he is slow. He types using the hunt and peck method. Second, after he entered my papers into the computer, he said I would get more money back using the standard deduction. So he started over. He then charged me $282.50. Later I made a call and food out that a standard deduction is only about $100. I believe an experienced tax preparer would have told me that after sorting and reviewing my papers. I feel as if he did my taxes twice, and charged me accordingly.

Arriving at my appointment my tax advisor asked if it was ok for a trainee to sit in with us and I agreed. She made a remark she added an extra zero by mistake and had to reenter information which made me aware she might be distracted. My taxes were filed and I received a letter from the state correcting my return and made an adjustment on my refund deducting $40.00. I took a copy of the letter into their office. They said she would call me.
My concern was not the mistake for 2015 because my income was a lot lower but for 2014. She filed it the same way and all I wanted to know was 2014 filed correctly. She finally called me and was rude. Stating "Its only $40.00." Again I expressed my concern for 2014 because I had to pay over $5000 in taxes that year and was worried if I was audited. She said she didn't know when the State had made a change to the disabled child exemptions and would get back to me. No call came so I left another message. Still no call... So she took my $215.00 prep fee, no apology, no call, no nothing. I have been using H&R Block for years and after this experience never, never again. I'm wondering for all their clients who have disabled children and use her, what is in store for them.

I had an appointment scheduled for 1:30pm on a Sunday with Rita **. I arrived at the H&R Block location and checked in with the receptionist at 1:20pm. I was asked to have a seat and told that Rita would be with me shortly. At 2:00pm, Rita came out into the reception area where I was waiting and apologized that she was running late. She explained that another worker was not in the office that day and that one of her clients had come in for help so she was assisting her. She went on to tell me, in detail, exactly what this person's tax problems were and how she was helping her which I thought was very unprofessional. I was left to wait for another hour after 2pm (hindsight 20/20 - I should have left), finally being called into her office at 3pm.
When I finally did get to meet with Rita, she was, for lack of a better description, frazzled. Waving her hands incessantly, making decisions without knowing the facts, having to call someone on the phone and not being able to explain the situation because she did not gather all the facts. She sounded like a babbling fool! I ended up sitting in her office for another hour and a half while she searched the internet and talked with someone on the phone for about a half hour. Finally, I told her I had to go - by this time I had been there for over 3 hours!
She asked me to leave all my tax files - from 2010 to present. I told her that I was uncomfortable doing that so she asked me for a copy of my husband's most recent pay stub which I provided to her along with my telephone number. I walked out extremely frustrated, wore out and with nothing done. She told me she would call me when she had more information on our tax situation and, to this date, 3 weeks later, I still haven't heard a word from her. Very, very unprofessional! I would never recommend her to anyone. She also stated several times during our meeting that I could do our taxes online and "it wouldn't cost nearly as much as I am going to have to charge you." Awful, awful customer service!

Overall very accurate. It asks a lot of questions to ensure the right information is entered. The ability to import W2s helps with your personal information accuracy. It costs around $76.00 to file both federal and state taxes. If your tax return is basic you can find a good accountant for about $60.00 to help. So you are really paying more for convenience. Let the questions guide you - it's that simple! I am hoping they keep all information confidential - one questions this with the upselling questions that happen throughout the preparation. Be careful of the "click to speak with a tax professional" buttons on these DIY tax preparation software - Let's just say from personal experience that I know one leading brand of software outsources its agents and they are not tax professionals nor are they accountants. Their focus is to get you to hit submit and pay for the filing and processing and have limited Tax training.

H&R Block has been great. Every year we use their software and it will look for possible tax credits. Last year they found us a tax credit I had no idea even existed and got us $2500. Very helpful, got more of a refund last year just by asking questions and offering suggestions. It tells you what information you need and where to find it. The program walks you through every step. We have never had any problems with our information being used or it falling into someone else's hands.

I tried using H&R Block's online system years ago, but it came out with numbers that I knew couldn't possibly be correct. I had student loans, annuitant pay from the DoD, and a W2 as well as property taxes (and I lived in a different state in which I worked). H&R Block always made me feel like my taxes were very complicated and each time I went they got "more complicated" and the price would always go up at the end.
Did I mention that they don't give you their price till the end? The last time that I went I was dreading going, because they tend to shame me for things like not keeping up with my property taxes or trying to fill it out online first and failing so bad. I've had them laugh at me before. I've never paid more than $220 with them and I've always gotten back more, but two years ago when I went back to them they charged me $360 at the end because I had made $14 that year from mineral royalties on a $1099 misc. Their fees were more than my tax return.
This place is essentially a scam. You can file online for free using TurboTax and they make it really easy and your numbers come out right. And even if you aren't comfortable filing it yourself, paying a personal accountant is going to be cheaper than H&R block most of the time. I'd even recommend Jackson Hewitt before H&R Block after my experiences.

My 80-year-old mother's husband passed away in 2015. Her taxes were a little more complex than past years so per my recommendation, she took them to H&R Block in Anacortes WA. Long story short, when she went to pick up her taxes, they presented her with a $9000 tax bill and a $429 invoice for their services. Not knowing how to question the person responsible for doing her taxes, she just said, "I can't believe they are that much." The woman said, "well, your income went way up."
Okay, that would have been a red flag to any knowledgeable tax person -- maybe something was wrong with the way her 1099's were coded or was there a reason why she had such a jump in income when she and her deceased husband were retired. The person didn't question the information. She just charged my mom the $429 fee and filled the taxes with the IRS.
When I heard what happened, I call the office and was told by the women who did the taxes that she didn't really have time to review the taxes before my mom picked them up. I complained about her not questioning the return especially when she had my the information from my mom's last three years of tax returns, which substantially less than $9000 (more like $200). The woman transferred me to Gary **, the franchise owner.
I told Gary ** the situation and that I'd like him to refund the $429 fee until we could review the return and figure out why the discrepancy. He said he couldn't do that. But if we could figure out the problem, they'd do an amendment free of charge. He said there was probably some coding errors in her 1099's -- my response, "why didn't they question that before filing the return." His response, "that's not our job, we are not the IRS." I've used CPA's to do my business taxes for years and they always question such huge discrepancies. Obviously, he just in it for the money and does not care about his clients.
I put a stop payment on the $429 fee and will find a legitimate tax person to straighten this out along with calling the banks and financial institutes to correct the tax coding on the 1099s. My reason for writing this review is to hopefully stop anyone from using the Anacortes H&R Block office. I don't understand why they didn't question this situation and don't understand how they could take advantage of people like this. They were very unprofessional and don't seem to know what they are doing. Gary ** just wants his fee and doesn't care -- he was rude and could have cared less about doing the right thing.

So I printed off the necessary forms from the IRS website and filed the old-fashioned way, something I was experienced in doing, just was looking for an easier way. This resulted in a $2900 refund. In order to get this "product" you will have to first call and have them manually downgrade your return otherwise, you will have to pay a minimum of about $62 to file both. I find this to be completely deceiving and extremely inappropriate false advertisement. I just wasted an hour of my day and I am not very happy about it. So if you are expecting to pay $9.99 this is just a heads up... Call first or you will end up wasting time and money! I discovered the fee only when my deposit was smaller than what Jerel told me my refund was and when my refund came from a bank, not from the IRS. (2) Jerel charged me for direct depositing my state refund, but my state refund came by mail. I paid this second fee (of which I had no knowledge), and I did not get the service.
I filed a complaint with H&R Block, and I emailed the owner (Janet **) of the Race Street location in Searcy. The owner has not responded. Two days later we were at dinner and my husband said "Do you remember the advisor saying anything about my union dues?" So we opened up our taxes as well as last years to verify and realized she never added them to page 15 question 21 on form 1040 schedule A.
We went in today for an appointment for an amendment and also to get our money back since H&R Block maximum refund guarantee states "We will get you the largest refund in which you’re entitled or it’s free." Well after waiting 45 minutes in the lobby because the advisor had told us the wrong time I got frustrated and made a scene and left. I called H&R Block and told them about this and after admitting that it was their mistake I was told they would give me $20 off my filing next year (even though they charge me $300 - $400 to do my taxes every year!) and pay the INTEREST only on what I owe (about $12). I then had mentioned that I don't pay them $300 - $400 to do my taxes every year for me to have to pay for their mistake when they clearly advertise that they do taxes "100% accurate".

When I said I was not willing to pay that much she tore up the return she had completed and sent me on my way. What a dishonest way to do business...

This is the WORST H&R Block office I've ever dealt with. They are ALL going downhill past few years as far as customer service goes, but this one is by far the worst. They made so many mistakes on my tax return, and I ended up owing Federal for the first time in 25 YEARS. When the manager refiled my taxes to fix the first woman's mistakes, I ended up owing even MORE. She told me I must've given her the wrong information LMAO! HOW?? It's all right in front of them on my documents. She even made a rude comment to me for having more than one W2, saying maybe I will stick with one job so next year I will only have one W2??? Not only that, my state return was rejected TWICE due to HER failing to submit the proper forms, as well as the IRS withdrawing from my checking account what I supposedly owed them WITHOUT MY AUTHORIZATION.
Their excuse was that the IRS shouldn't have been able to do that and they do not know what happened. When I called corporate, MARIO assured me I would receive a refund of the $165 filing fee within 10 days, due to the MISTAKES and DISRESPECTFUL COMMENTS made by this office. A week later when I called to find out where that refund was, the RELATIONS department told me they don't know why MARIO told me that since he has no authorization to do that. So not only does H&R Block provide TERRIBLE customer service on all levels, they have ZERO PEOPLE SKILLS and always pass blame onto someone else. Their "guarantee" is a JOKE and is something they do not HONOR. As a 25 year customer, I REFUSE to ever deal with this incompetent company ever again. CROOKS!

Do not do file taxes with these people. Total frauds. It's been 21 days. I still haven't received nothing from them. They add unexpected fees with filing. Should of stayed with TurboTax.

Yesterday I called H&R Block's customer hotline. First off I was on the phone for over an hour, transferred to 3 different departments all for a simple answer. They took 1000 from me unexpectedly for what they said was something 9 yrs old. I've never received a letter, a phone call, an email regarding this matter. When I filed nothing came up as a disclaimer or warning.
I'm all for paying your debts but not in the way they go about it. My husband thinks something is odd about this. One customer service rep couldn't find my name in the system, one seemed shocked I'm calling but don't have one of those emerald cards, finally the last one answered my questions. If I had even remotely had any idea this would have been paid. Like I said I'm all for paying debts but after this many years I've never thought about it. They should do a better job collecting first. My number has not changed and I've been in the same house 8 yrs, that's another thing this "debt" isn't on my credit, never has been.

I use to do my taxes on my computer, but choose H&R when my computer went down. They told me the price and I asked them to take it out of my refund, they took $300.00??? I should of got on this website before I chose them. I will make it a point to tell as many people as I cannot go to H&R Block. You should be ashamed of yourself. I can't believe you are still in business?

First year using H&R Block and will NEVER USE THEM AGAIN! They charged me $300 dollars to get refund faster with this emerald card and told me two weeks! Here I am four weeks later with nothing! My friends used TurboTax and got their refunds back in one week! I just don't understand what I paid the $300 bucks for exactly when it's taking as long as a paper check would! Now I'm really getting worried because I just came across this site and am learning that this is happening to a lot of other people! Someone needs to do something! This isn't right!

H&R block promotes that they have free file and return for federal and also 9.99 for state (1 per state). Now the thing with this is I was doing my taxes under their tab right from their main web page. I had very simple taxes. Just 3 w-2s with no 1099 (self-employment form) and I also had my 1095 form to avoid penalty. As I was going through my taxes they wanted to charge 36.99 for state and 26.99 for federal. Now I understand if you own homes, have Investments, dependents, I have none of those. What the heck was the difference in me doing it myself and paying someone to do it. I got absolutely no benefit from doing it myself besides wasting time. The fee should have been 9.99.
I called customer service and the representative was very nice but he is a robot in what he can do. This is the truth. The rep actually told me once I informed him it seemed misleading he informed me that he has been getting calls about it frequently. And he also stated to me that you could always go file with another company that does not have those fees to save yourself some money. Now I could have done that but I spent an hour and a half on H&R block so I did not want to go through the process all over again with a different company. But I learned my lesson. I will be using someone else next tax season. H&R block thanks for taking more money than you should have. Late Christmas for you!

They made an error filing my 2014 Taxes. Filed me as Head of Household, IRS caught the mistake and are asking for $2171 back. H&R Block are being very slow honoring Peace of Mind Contract, looking more like I will be taking them to Small Claims & purchasing Turbo Tax.

I have used H&R Block for years whenever I needed taxes done. The prices were decent in the past, but the past few years the amount I'm paying for taxes keep going up. In 2014 alone, I made no money yet to do my taxes still cost over $400. Then, I get something from the state about failure to file some returns. I pay for the peace of mind. And now H&R Block wants to charge me for those forms, even though at a reduced fee, renders the peace of mind you buy - that they offer - useless.
I used to be a fan of this company, but they have become a company that is all about the money and raping people's wallets is something they will do with a smile on their face. Not funny in the least bit, as it just shows more greedy people trying to make an extra buck - who don't care if they retain customers. Which is a terrible business practice. Once I have some things wrapped up, I will never be using H&R Block again after that in the future. Their peace of mind just ends up being a piece of crap - just like their respect for their customers.

Usually do my own taxes online. Went to office for preparation last yr. & this yr. due to starting social security & not quite sure of how to address Obamacare issue. Last yr. feel I was charged a fair price to have my taxes filed. This year I feel I have been ripped off. First, preparer made prep as difficult as possible. Had everything for prep ready except for a form I didn't realize I needed from the marketplace, that I hadn't received yet. As soon as preparer looked at my paperwork, told me I didn't have enough to itemize with. Ok. So easy 1040. Then, after everything had pretty much been prepared, we came to the healthcare form which I hadn't received yet. I made the mistake of asking the preparer if they knew who I should contact re: the form. Big mistake. The preparer pulls out the cellphone & starts making a dozen phone calls. All the while I am saying "It's not that urgent, I would bring it as soon as it arrives".
This went on for about 20 mins. until preparer finally got tired, & agreed the process indeed needed to be on hold till form arrived. As luck would have it, the form in question was in the mail when I got back home so took it immediately back to office. Taxes (no itemizations, etc.) were completed. I was then asked if I wanted the "peace of mind protection". Now as a longtime H&R Block online user I thought that rather strange because H&R Block has always had a policy of backing up their work in an audit but said ok. Nothing was mentioned about a fee. Then was asked of course about my payment. I said I intended to use my bank card. Then preparer started telling me that I could pay later & asked for my bank acct. no. & routing no., saying they could just set up an acct. with my bank to remove their fee from my return when it was direct deposited.
Now, I really didn't want to do it that way but was pretty much pressured into it. Gave her my acct./routing no. & computer kept kicking out the routing no. My bank had changed names since I got my last checks. So. preparer asked me to call my bank & get the new no. I started to do it but then hung up & again told the preparer that I would pay with my card. Preparer grabbed cellphone again, asked me which branch I use, called my bank & set up the "payment" to them when my refund arrived. Not once was there any mention of a "green card" or loan. So, for a simple 1040 to be done, I've been charged $289+ because the process was made much worse than necessary by the preparer, & because there wasn't any mention of a refund loan (green card), to take their money out when my refund arrives, or a fee for the "peace of mind". This kind of manipulation & deception by omission should be illegal.

I went to H&R Block to file my taxes. Went through my federal. Fine no issues. Told them I wanted to do the refund anticipation check and emerald card. They said no problem. When doing state of MD I have my Firefighter papers that give me a 3500 dollar credit. Along with that I claim mileage and uniform. She couldn't put in my credit in the system. Told me even with the credit my refund was only 300 dollars. I said absolutely not.. My tax refund for state is always minimum 800. She called "tech support". They said it was a known problem and they told me to put my state taxes on hold and they would call me when it was fixed but they didn't have a approximate date of when it would be fixed.
I asked if I had stupid on my forehead and said no. They then said to take my state taxes to a state office and they would file my taxes by paper for free. Again I said no. All this was way too shady. Then they said they would do my federal still. Then she said I would have to be charged an additional 499 dollars because I have a 10-99 for 58 dollars because it's technically my own business because I drove for Uber. I told them to delete everything, give me my papers and I would go elsewhere.

I am so frustrated!!! I have used H&R Block for the last 5 years. I used it this year and for the first time, it wouldn't let me go any further until I selected either send it to a "Tax Professional", choose my own or something else but I had to choose an option to have someone to look at it before I could submit it!! I chose the option "use someone they refer" to use which was a lady who worked at a H&R Block right up the street. It said she will get in touch with me in 72 hours. It's been 120 hours!!
I decide to call the office where she works, where H&R block referred me to only to find out that she has not "reported" to the office this tax season so my taxes has been sitting in LIMBO for days!!! Then the receptionist says, "I will have my office manager call you as soon as she finishes up with a client." That was 3 hours ago. I am just so frustrated!!! How do I get my taxes back and use another website!!! UGH... UGH... UGH!!

I have been out of work because I work construction and it is bad weather. My bills were stacking and I filed some taxes from a few years ago. Well I didn't know it cost out of pocket... there was no way I could pay. They chipped in to help me pay. This may seem small to you but this is my first experience where a business showed concern for its community. It was a true blessing... Thank you to the staff at Kiefer Sacramento.

My wife and I did our taxes online with H&R Block not knowing the price. At the end, it was $20 tax filing and $35 if you want them to back you in an audit. $55. Not cheap, but okay. My wife gets an email today and they took $180 in fees out of a small refund. Also, no recourse. Be aware. Lesson learned. That won't happen again and I will make it a point to tell as many as I can of my experience. I reported this on my phone but I have proof of these facts.

A representative of H&R Block filled in an income tax return for 2015 and made a huge error by not filling the box 66 of a t-4 which resulted in a huge re-assessment from Revenue Canada. Now the client has to pay $7,000.00 which she does not have. She is on a pension and she has been a Canadian citizen who worked and paid into an old age pension plan. Revenue Canada will take her CPP if this is not paid inside two year period. It is outrageous and I think unfair. They are treating immigrants better than citizens.
H&R Block are FRAUDS and they will not stand behind their ad which states guaranteed 100% satisfaction, and the CEO saying "we do the right thing" after a few phone calls to them and no results to fix the problem. MANY PEOPLE ARE IN THIS HOPELESS SITUATION. I THINK THAT WE SHOULD ALL GET TOGETHER AND FIGHT THEM. Maybe sign a petition and send it to AICPA. It does not matter if you are Canadian or U.S. residents. Send me an e-mail at **.

I went to H&R Block for the first time because someone referred me to them. I was told that they were cheaper than doing them on TurboTax. I was charged over $200 to file two tax returns. That is just ridiculous when I can go onto TurboTax and done it for about $60 or $70. I was not happy at all and I will never EVER go to them again!
