What is Five Lakes Law Group?

Based in Michigan, Five Lakes Law Group focuses on providing clients debt relief through the debt settlement process.

Debt settlement requires clients to establish financial hardship, usually through negating their monthly debt bills, in order for the company to settle the debt for a lower amount or in full. Five Lakes Law Group offers litigation support alongside its debt settlement services, so clients will have that benefit in case a creditor threatens legal action.

One notable perk of using Five Lakes Law Group is its mobile app that allows you to manage your enrolled debts and approve agreements. The app has a 4.9-star rating on both Apple’s App Store and Google Play as of publishing, with over 350 reviews combined.

How does Five Lakes Law Group work?

Five Lakes Law Group helps clients settle unsecured debt by diverting their creditor payments. Instead of paying your creditors each month, you will pay into an account that will be used for debt payoff. The goal is to establish new terms and a lower owed amount with the creditor.

However, if you forgo paying your creditor to establish financial hardship, your debt will accumulate late fees and interest rate charges. There is also a possibility that the creditor will sue you for your owed balance. Five Lakes Law Group will attempt to slow down or assist in legal issues with free pro se legal document drafting and attorney assistance.

Five Lakes Law Group products and services

While Five Lakes Law Group does not give a specific time frame for its debt settlement services, clients can expect the process to take between 24 and 60 months, which is the common range among most debt settlement companies. Five Lakes Law Group can help with the following debts:

  • Credit card
  • Medical
  • Personal loans

It cannot help with debt that is secured by collateral, such as mortgage and auto loans. It also will not help with federal student loan debt.

Five Lakes Law Group fees

Five Lakes Law Group does not disclose its fees on its website but should be able to give you the full costs before you commit. Avoid any debt settlement companies that require you to sign up before letting you know the cost.

While Five Lakes Law Group’s pricing is not listed, note that many debt settlement companies do not charge any upfront fees but instead charge between 15% and 25% of the settled amount once a debt resolution has been made.

Five Lakes Law Group FAQ

Does Five Lakes Law Group have a money-back guarantee?

Five Lakes Law Group does not have a money-back guarantee or satisfaction policy listed on its website. Before working with this company, ask about its refund policies.

Do I need a hardship to use Five Lakes Law Group?

Yes. Five Lakes Law Group relies on a client’s financial hardship to better negotiate and settle with your creditors. If you don’t want to take this route to become debt-free, you can look into taking out a debt consolidation loan, which helps you move all of your debt to one predictable loan payment.

Will using Five Lakes Law Group hurt my credit score?

Yes. You should expect your credit score to take a hit with any debt settlement company you use. This is because you must establish financial hardship, which is done when you stop paying your creditors.

Is Five Lakes Law Group legit?

Five Lakes Law Group is a legitimate law firm that specializes in debt resolution. You can expect licensed attorneys to assist you with your debt settlement journey. Before choosing to work with Five Lakes Law Group, make sure you know how long the process will take and how much you will need to pay in fees.

I was drowning, my head wasn't even above water anymore. I had spent months searching for employment, constant rejections, finding ways to make my minimum payments which never moved because of the interest rates to only realize... I can't do this. I was forced to choose between feeding my kids or making min payments. A simple Google search and Five Lakes appeared. Highest ratings across the board. So I call to see if they can help me. I thought, " The worst they can say is No, sorry." But that WAS NOT THE CASE.

I called on Thanksgiving morning, after being up most of the night pondering how I'm going to tell my family our winter is going to be bleak. I get this wonderful woman with tenderness in her voice. Empathy in her words and affirmations that give me some comfort that she is going to see every avenue available for me. Once she got all my info, she puts me on a brief hold and BOOM!!! In minutes my worries of payments went down $910 a month! This Savings saved my life. I can now work on low simple payments while 5 Lakes fights for me with creditors. It is truly life saving. If you're questioning it... just do it. You'll be grateful you did!

Updated on 11/02/2025: So far, so good. Everything is the way I was told it would be. It does take time. Be patient. I just wish there was more time trying to notify creditors that haven't responded to correspondence. Other than that, Five Lakes Law is easily contacted, friendly to work with, and has always answered any questions with kindness and professionalism.

Original: I'm at the beginning of my process. So far, they have been wonderful. They are not pushy, forcing you into anything. They urge you to ask any questions about the program and how it works. They have been kind, friendly, and understanding towards me and my situation.

I had no problem with 5 Lakes the first two years until an aggressive credit card company refused to settle and take me to court. I had to pay extra every paycheck because they couldn’t do what they said they could do. I signed up for debt relief and the lawyer I talked to in the beginning said they work with these credit card companies all the time and never had an issue. 5 Lakes had to “dip” into my escrow to pay the aggressive credit card company off with no negotiation and I had to pay extra to keep up my escrow balance for the two I’m currently paying off. There is another credit card I have that’s being aggressive and 5 lakes contacted me to pay yet, extra again, because they can’t get it negotiated. I refused because I can’t afford it. They declined offer and are negotiating yet again. I signed up for one amount every paycheck, that’s all I’m paying. 5 lakes is getting paid to negotiate and that’s what they need to do. I’m too far in to stop now.

BE CAREFUL!!! My total debt between 2 credit cards was less than $20,000. By the time Five Lakes negotiated settlements, with the additional late fees and penalties the banks charged, I am being charged more than the original debt: EXAMPLE. Original debt. $3999.29. Creditor balance by the time it was negotiated: $5073.37. Negotiated offer amount. $2526.69. Five Lakes Fee. $1,079.81. Paying it off early does not lower the Five Lakes Fee either! I was told someone would review the fees and had a phone appointment which was never received. I was also told that if I paid in extra $, this could be applied to the outstanding accounts - wrong info! By the time I am finished, I will have saved a whopping $392.79 plus the credit hit plus all the hassle!

I started with 5 lakes, and at first it was fine. Your credit does take a hit, but that's to be expected. I entered the program with 3 accounts. The first one didn't have much on it and was the first to be resolved, so I felt good about it. The 2nd one wasn't negotiated down at all and I ended up paying nearly the entire amount. Two months before that one was finished out, they started getting aggressive with the 3rd card. They were trying to demand I pay more than I even make - like by twice as much.

I finally reached out to the people representing the final company myself, released power of attorney with 5 lakes, and found out they had not even talked with them once in the "negotiating attempts." They were actually ready to file a summons against me because there had been no response to their requests to negotiate and finalize the account over the course of 3 months. Within the hour, I negotiated myself - in tears of anger and disbelief - and got the account handled. I would not trust them at all. If you have any other options, take it. The emotional hardship endured because of them was overwhelming to say the least.

When I was trying to finalize the last 2 payments with the final card I still had with them, I called to get the exact amount owed so I could take out a loan in the appropriate amount and be done with them. I had to take out a loan to pay the negotiated settlement with the 3rd card, so I wanted to be done with them and take out enough to cover the balance with them as well. The account didn't move for a month and every time I called I was told different things. Some told me it just takes time to close, some told me I still owed them $10 and the account was "stuck" because of that. I flipped out.

I finally got to a supervisor who disclosed that they had made an error in my account when closing it and it generated another $10 fee so I had to pay that to finally close my account with them. After many heated words, to say the least, I did not pay them for their own error and my account was properly closed. I would not recommend doing business with them or trusting them with your finances. They are a mess, untrustworthy, and they lie to cover their own butts.

Although it is early in the process with a long road ahead, so far, everyone I have spoken with has listened and I feel heard about my debt issues and needing to get it behind me. Everyone has been empathetic and clearly explained the next steps on this journey together. I am now looking forward to the process and feel confident that we will meet my goals sooner rather than later...it took me many years to get in my situation, and the path to get out of it will be a fraction of that time!!

I had researched several companies to help me resolve my debt issues, but they either lacked transparency in the financial plan or clarity in the process. The partnership between Accredited and FiveLakes Law was the clear winner. The Accredited program was easy to understand, and with the detailed mobile dashboard at FiveLakes, I found a solution that made sense and gave me the tools and confidence to succeed. The friendly teams on both arms were kind and well coordinated, and I wish I had made the move sooner. This is a terrific solve, and you will be happy. Peace.
