About OpenSky

OpenSky is a secured Visa credit card backed by Capital Bank N.A. Consumers can apply for a card without a credit check. The company requires cardholders to transfer a security deposit that acts as collateral and determines their spending limit. Cardholders can then make purchases with their card. Monthly payments are reported to the three major credit bureaus, helping to rebuild cardholders’ credit history.

Pros
  • No credit check
  • Can improve credit score
  • Card widely accepted
  • Cashback rewards program
Cons
  • Security deposit required
  • High APRs for carryover balances
  • Monthly and annual fees may apply

What is OpenSky?

OpenSky, owned by Capital Bank N.A., is a secured Visa credit card that lets cardholders rebuild their credit history and increase their credit score by making regular, on-time payments.

As a cardholder, you’re required to put down a deposit, which is used to establish your credit limit. You can then use the card up to this limit with no risk of overdrawing your account or getting into more debt.

OpenSky credit cards

OpenSky offers three main card options. Each card comes with a variable annual percentage rate (APR), but if you pay off your balance in full each month, you won’t accrue any interest:

  • Launch Visa: The newest OpenSky product is made for customers on a budget seeking to build their credit.
  • Visa: The basic credit rebuilding card that allows customers to qualify for a higher spending limit.
  • Plus Visa: Like the basic Visa card, the Plus Visa allows customers to access up to $3,000 in credit and features no annual fee.

Here’s more information about each of OpenSky’s secured credit card options:

Some customers may become eligible for an unsecured Visa Gold card after they’ve demonstrated a history of on-time payments and a responsible credit history with their secured card. There is no application process for this card, and eligible customers will be notified if they qualify.

How to apply for OpenSky

You can easily apply for an OpenSky secured card online by providing basic personal and financial information. Some customers may be asked to upload an image of their driver's license to verify their identity.

There is no credit check when applying, and most applicants receive approval immediately. The company claims that over 88% of applicants are approved for a card.

If there is a delay with approval, you can always check the status of your application on the website by selecting “Check App Status.”

How does an OpenSky secured credit card work?

After you’ve been approved, you’ll be asked to transfer your refundable security deposit by linking your OpenSky account to an existing debit card, wiring funds or sending a check or money order.

Once your deposit is received, you’ll be sent a physical card as well as one you can add to your digital wallet. You can use your card as you would any other credit card. However, you’ll only be able to charge up to your security deposit amount. As you make payments toward your balance, more funds will be freed up to use. If you reach your limit, you’ll no longer be able to use the card.

OpenSky reports your payment history to the three main credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian and TransUnion — each month. If you fail to make payments, this will be reported as an overdue account to the credit bureaus.

OpenSky fees

There are a few fees that customers should be aware of before signing up.

  • Annual fees:
    • Launch Visa: $2 a month ($24 annually) for the first 12 months, then $3 a month ($36 annually) thereafter
    • Visa: $35 a year
    • Plus Visa: No annual fee
  • Late fees: Up to $41
  • Returned payment fees: Up to $40
  • Foreign transaction fee: 3% if you use your card abroad
  • Cash advance: OpenSky cards may be used for cash advances, and fees depend on your card and are based on the withdrawal amount:
    • Launch Visa: $10 or 3%, whichever is greater
    • Visa and Plus Visa: $6 or 5%, whichever is greater

OpenSky Rewards

Your card is automatically enrolled in the OpenSky Rewards program, but you can opt out at any time. OpenSky partners with retailers who post exclusive offers to cardholders. If you make a purchase with your enrolled card, you’ll earn up to 10% cashback that’s added to your card balance within 120 days.

I have a Visa w/ this company for quite a many yrs now, in fact had a card w/ them yrs before that I closed AND liked them enough to come back, don't like the annual fee however. Anyway, I have not had problems w/ them so over the yrs have rarely called them, but today I had to call them and this is what happened: Was on hold a long time, then a person finally answered that literally sounded like they just woke up, and couldn't manage to speak to me and the line got disconnected(?!) So had to call back, and had to wait on hold again a rather long time, then that time got a rude guy, even at the end of the call he hung up short before he was done saying goodbye, I don't know what's going on there, but something has gone WRONG w/ their customer service over the phone. If you can find a secured credit card that doesn't have an annual fee, and may have decent professional people answering the phone, got w/ them.

My experience with OpenSky Secured Credit Card was VERY unsettling, to say the least. They claimed one of my payments to them was NSF, when, in fact, it clearly went thru my bank just fine. Their Customer Service leaves a lot to be desired. I got fed up & closed the account after only a couple of months. I now use a reloadable WalMart card called OnePay. SO easy to use, & offers the same spiffs. When trying to get my $500 deposit back, CS told me 7-10 days, that timeframe came & went! Now they are saying 8-10 weeks!!! I find it very difficult to believe this is at all legal. And I did ask for the paperwork stating it would take this long, that I signed off on. They could not present same! Again, this can't possibly be legal?!?! Go somewhere/anywhere else than OpenSky -- it's a scam!!!

Warning. Stay away from this company. I open up an account with $100 deposit 3 months ago. They charge you a fee for everything, service fee, late fee, processing fees. When you make a payment even using a debit card it takes 7 to 10 days to post to your account and the reason they do that is so your payment will be late and they can charge you a $25.45 late fee on your account. It's a scam. They provide the worst customer service on the planet. Between their service fees and late fees it's the worst credit card out there. Please people read the agreement before you sign it and agreed to their terms. I have been attempting to go to their process of canceling the account for over a month. Don't make the same mistake I did. Stay away from this card

How is it if I fund my unsecured credit card. I get charged? Does not make any sense. Stay away from this card. Total scam. I should be able to fund my card at my leisure. Not being charged because I don’t want to fund this scam anymore.

Payments take almost a week if not longer to come out of my bank account even if I make them on a Monday and cancelled payments DON'T actually get cancelled when you do it through the app. This is the second time I've had to cancel a payment because the funds wouldn't make it to me in time for what I needed them for. I made a payment on October 1st. Cancelled it on the app a few minutes later because I realized I would need it sooner than it would be available, and the payment was still returned on October 3rd. However, this didn't show up in my bank statement until OCTOBER 11TH OVER A FULL WEEK past when customer service stated that the payment was reversed.

When I called to ask if I could potentially get the returned funds fee removed "Keith" my customer service representative stated that it could only be reversed if there was a bank error on OpenSky's end which I know isn't true because the one other time this has happened (same thing- cancelled payment that didn't actually get cancelled) they were kind and courteous and immediately offered to reverse the payment. I want to be clear that it's not like I'm doing this all of the time. It's been multiple months since the last time this happened and it has happened a total of twice since I opened my card. Honestly thinking about just cancelling my OpenSky account at this point.

He was not a pleasant person to talk to and the conversation grew exceedingly infuriating as I continued to speak with him. If you're going to use OpenSky don't be poor I guess (even though it's a beginner credit card and you are most likely poor if you're even considering it) because funds will take forever to leave your bank account and even when you know that and decide to cancel a payment so you can use that money immediately they will STILL charge you AND charge you a returned payment fee. Absolutely ridiculous and I will be using this card as little as possible from now on until I have enough to pay it off and close my account.

Terrible Experience – Avoid OpenSky Credit Card. I would not recommend OpenSky for anyone trying to build credit. The fees are excessive, they overcharge, and billing errors are common. It was a frustrating experience, and I would strongly advise against subscribing to this card.
