$7,000 extra might actually be worth it on a $100k vehicle with below average reliability
If you read our feature on Land Rover’s certified pre-owned (CPO) program, you’ll know that all CPO Land Rovers come with a solid one-year/unlimited-mile CPO warranty. You’ll also know that Land Rovers rank notoriously low for reliability, meaning the longer the warranty you can find, the better.
But what about Range Rovers specifically? Are they reliable? How much are dealers charging extra for CPO Range Rovers these days, and is it worth paying?
Just to clarify, we’re talking about the specific model – the Land Rover Range Rover. We may do separate pieces on the Range Rover Sport, Velar and Evoque at a later date, but for now, we’re focused on the classic Range Rover.
So without further ado, is it worth buying a CPO Range Rover? Read on to find out.
The CPO warranty on a Range Rover is one year/unlimited miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage starting from the date your factory warranty expires (four years/50,000 miles) or the date you buy the SUV, whichever comes first.

The CPO warranty on a Range Rover is the same as you’d get with a CPO Land Rover: a one-year/unlimited-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.
To put that number into context, all new Land Rovers and Range Rovers come with a four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty from the factory. Like most factory warranties, it automatically transfers to new owners until it expires. So if you purchase a one-year-old Range Rover with 10,000 miles on it, you’ll still have three years and 40,000 miles left on its original factory warranty.
When you purchase a CPO Range Rover, Land Rover essentially tacks on one extra year to your remaining factory warranty period. So the day your factory warranty expires (when your Range Rover turns four or reaches 50,000 miles), you’ll have one more year of bumper-to-bumper coverage with no mileage limit.
Since the industry-standard CPO warranty is around one year/12,000 miles, one year with no mileage cap is slightly better than average.
You may also get the option to upgrade your one-year CPO warranty by one additional year for a total of six years of protection from new. To find out how much that might cost you, we rang up one of the largest Land Rover dealers in the U.S. for a quote.
“Certified Range Rovers come with one additional year of bumper-to-bumper coverage, and if you want to upgrade that to two years, you’re looking at paying around $3,000 extra,” they told us.
Lastly, CPO Range Rovers also come with the following benefits that last for the length of the CPO warranty:
- 24/7 roadside assistance, including lockout services, flat tire assistance, battery jump-starts and towing.
- Trip expense reimbursement to help cover “reasonable costs” (e.g., food, lodging and transportation) if your Range Rover breaks down far from home.
So far, we’ve established that CPO Range Rovers come with an above-average warranty and pretty decent benefits. But before we rush out and buy our dream bronze-colored Range Rover, how much more are Land Rover dealers charging for CPO these days?

How much does a certified pre-owned Range Rover cost?
We found 1,148 pre-owned Range Rovers nationwide with an average price of $98,841 and 454 CPO Range Rovers with an average price of $105,763. That’s a difference of $6,922, or 7% over the cost of pre-owned.
To find out, ConsumerAffairs went to Edmunds.com to compare the cost of a CPO Range Rover to a regular pre-owned Range Rover with similar ages and miles. We also factored out special editions that were priced over $200,000, as well as any listings with accidents or major issues reported.
For context, the average price difference between pre-owned and CPO vehicles across brands was 6% as of May 2024, so for Land Rover dealers to ask for 7% more is reasonable.
Even still, while the percentage might make sense, 7% of $100,000 is still $7,000. Is it really worth paying that much extra?
Is a CPO Range Rover worth it?
Generally speaking, it’s more likely to be worth buying a CPO vehicle if:
- The vehicle you’re considering has a below-average reputation for reliability
- The cost to buy CPO over pre-owned isn’t exorbitant
- The warranty and benefits justify the CPO upcharge
- You don’t mind paying for added peace of mind
In the case of a CPO Range Rover, we’ve established that the CPO upcharge isn’t unreasonable (at least, percentage-wise) and that the included warranty and benefits are both pretty solid.
So let’s look at just how reliable Range Rovers are.
In its 2024 Vehicle Dependability Study, J.D. Power ranked Land Rover as a brand 27th out of 29 overall, with an average of 268 problems per 100 vehicles within three years of production. Consumer Reports lacked sufficient data to rank Land Rover overall, but it did give the 2024 Range Rover a predicted reliability score of just 2 out of 5.
Finally, RepairPal also gave the Range Rover a Reliability Rating of just 2 out of 5, with estimated annual repair and maintenance costs that were roughly 12% higher than your average luxury full-size SUV – and nearly double the average vehicle in general.
Land Rover’s notoriously poor reputation for long-term reliability suggests that if you invest nearly $100,000 in a pre-owned Range Rover, you’ll likely want to get as much warranty protection with it as possible.
Purchasing your Range Rover as CPO is just one option, and a solid one at that. For around $7,000 extra you’ll get:
- A 165-point quality inspection by a trained Land Rover technician
- A one-year/unlimited-mile extension of your factory bumper-to-bumper warranty (or one year from the date you purchase the Range Rover if you have no factory warranty left)
- One year of 24/7 roadside assistance and trip interruption reimbursement
That’s not a bad deal, but before we wrap up, let’s consider the alternative.

CPO vs. extended warranties for Range Rovers
While Land Rover’s CPO package is probably a good investment given the high cost and frequency of Range Rover repairs, let’s see if an extended warranty can offer a more cost-effective solution.
In our full breakdown of Land Rover's extended warranty, we found that the average cost of additional bumper-to-bumper coverage was around $1,800 to $2,500 per year of coverage. If you can stomach having a $250 deductible (versus $0 with CPO), that might be a far more cost-effective option than paying around $7,000 for one year with CPO.
That being said, if you choose to skip CPO in favor of a regular pre-owned Range Rover with an extended warranty, we strongly recommend that you invest $200 in a pre-purchase inspection (PPI). You may even consider scheduling a PPI on a CPO Range Rover, too, just so you can get a second opinion on the car’s condition (that isn’t coming from the dealership trying to sell it to you).
After all, $200 isn’t much to pay for added peace of mind on a $100,000 investment.
