About Polestar

Launched in 2017 as Volvo’s performance brand, Polestar makes all-electric vehicles available in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. Over the past few years, the Swedish automaker has positioned itself as a competitor to other electric vehicle manufacturers, such as Tesla. The Polestar 2 has been the brand’s sole vehicle since 2021, but its larger SUV siblings, the 3 and 4, will join the lineup in 2024.

Pros
  • All-electric car and two SUV models
  • Good driving ranges up to 320 miles
  • Transferable warranties for new and pre-owned cars
Cons
  • Limited vehicle lineup
  • Many states have no Polestar locations

Polestar models

If you wanted a Polestar in the last few years, your only options were the Polestar 2 electric hatchback or a limited-edition Polestar 1 (if you could find one on sale). That changes in 2024 with the introduction of the brand’s first two SUVs, the Polestar 3 and 4. Both electric performance SUVs are on sale now, with estimated delivery times for later this year.

The Polestar 4, which the brand markets as an SUV coupe, is the fastest Polestar model in the lineup. With a dual motor, the 4 can rocket from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, outputting 544 horsepower and 506 lb-ft of torque. It’s positioned between the 2 and 3 in both size and price.

The larger Polestar 3 has an estimated 315-mile electric driving range. Polestar says the SUV charges from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes at DC fast charging stations. With home charging, it takes the Polestar 3 about 11 hours to reach a full charge.

If you don’t need the extra space, the new Polestar 2 comes in three variants with solid driving ranges and varying levels of power. The long-range single motor gets the brand’s best EPA-estimated range at 320 miles. With a dual motor and performance pack, the Polestar 3 gets up to 517 horsepower, but the range drops to 247 miles per charge.

Polestar warranty

Every new Polestar comes with warranty protection to cover faulty or defective parts, including paint and corrosion. There’s also a warranty to cover the high-voltage battery if it loses capacity over time.

Polestar’s vehicle warranty protects new models for four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. The warranty stays in effect even if the vehicle’s ownership changes, meaning you don’t have to be the original owner to get warranty coverage. Under the new vehicle warranty, Polestar covers repairs or replacements if parts fail because of manufacturing defects.

An eight-year/100,000-mile battery warranty covers defects or faults in battery performance. Additionally, if the battery’s capacity drops below 70% within those eight years, you can get a free replacement.

The corrosion warranty covers bodywork for 12 years after delivery, no matter who owns the car. It covers repairs or replacements of corroded panels at no cost.

In addition to warranty coverage, all new Polestar vehicles come with three to four years of roadside assistance, depending on the model. This benefit allows you to connect with an agent for support on the road, including recovery, alternate transportation and emergency calls.

Though it’s a relatively new vehicle brand, Polestar offers a certified pre-owned (CPO) program, known as Certified by Polestar, for used models 1 and 2. If you purchase a CPO Polestar, it comes with a limited warranty that takes effect after the new vehicle warranty expires. The limited warranty gives you another two years and unlimited miles of coverage.

CPO models also come with complimentary scheduled maintenance and roadside assistance. If your vehicle needs repairs, you can take it to a Polestar service center for genuine parts. You’ll also get a loaner vehicle if you need one.

Polestar FAQ

What is Polestar’s best-selling model?

With the Polestar 3 and 4 going on sale in 2024, Polestar only recently became a multi-car brand. Its best-selling vehicle remains the Polestar 2, an electric hatchback. The brand also sold the Polestar 1, though in extremely limited quantities.

Are Polestars reliable?

Polestar has only produced cars since 2019, so it’s hard to judge the long-term reliability of its vehicles. Polestar 2s have just a few recalls, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Additionally, Polestar is owned by Volvo, which is a generally reliable brand.

Are Polestars expensive to maintain?

New Polestar models come with free scheduled maintenance for three years or 30,000 miles, whichever comes first. Ongoing maintenance costs can vary depending on several factors, including the model you own and your driving habits.

Is an extended warranty worth it on a Polestar?

Polestar offers standard warranty coverage on all new models. You can also purchase a vehicle service contract with exclusionary coverage, which offers additional protection for most vehicle components.

It may be worth purchasing this extended warranty if you plan to drive the vehicle for a while and want continued coverage after the new vehicle warranty ends. Vehicle service contracts have a $100 deductible for repairs. Plans come with roadside assistance, alternate transportation coverage and travel benefits.

    Reviewed Dec. 15, 2025

DO NOT BUY A POLESTAR 3 if you live in S. California! We live in S. California and bought a Polestar 3 earlier this year (4/30/2025) and had nothing but problems. My car is in the shop as we speak and has been in the shop for 4 weeks with no resolution in sight. The GHCA charging unit went out twice on the car, the first time happened about a month after we took delivery. Service is at the local Volvo shop and there is only one technician there who is super rude and unhelpful. For whatever it is worth here is the information on all that went on with this car and company.

    Date Purchased: 4/30/2025
    Date of First incident: 06/12/25
Description: The car would not charge and a "Charging System Fault" message shows up on the console.
Service Station: Volvo service station on Marguerite Parkway in Mission Viejo.
    Was the issue resolved: Yes
How was the issue resolved?: Our understanding is that a new charging GHCA unit was installed allowing us to charge again.

How long did it take to resolve: 27 Days. Picked up car on 7/9/2025.

Comments: We had to drive to the sales office in the Costa Mesa mall since we we had no other point of contact to be able to solve this. After a long wait and a then a very unpleasant conversation with the manager at the sales office in Costa Mesa, we were finally told to go to the Volvo service station on Marguerite Parkway in Mission Viejo. We have never had such a bad experience with a car company before. Seems like nobody wanted to take responsibility for their brand new car that was malfunctioning. There was absolutely no regard for customer service.

    Date of Second Incident: 11/17/25
Service Station: Volvo service station on Marguerite Parkway in Mission Viejo.
    Was the issue resolved: NO
Description: The car would not charge and a "Charging System Fault" message shows up on the console. Took it to the service station and discovered there were no loaners available. Fortunately, the car could be charged using a DC unit. So we took the car back since we could charge at the nearest Tesla Supercharger station located about 5 miles from our house.

How long did it take to resolve: Not Resolved Yet

Comments: There is absolutely no communication initiated by the technician at the service station regarding the status of the car or the progress of the repair. We have to initiate all conversations regarding the car and we are met with "No updates" curt response. The callousness and the attitude of the technician towards our concerns have no precedent in all our experience of dealing with car companies. We have also left messages with the sales manager who sold us the car about this issue. To date we have not received a response.
