In 35+ years of car ownership, I have only paid off 1 car. Usually I get tired of them, something bothers me about them, mechanical problems etc. Until I got my Kia Sportage. Almost 6 years later, 3 payments away from payoff and I just bought a new set of 65,000 mile tires. There's nothing I don't like about this car. And even when I see newer models, I don't like the look as much as my own. I would highly recommend the Kia Sportage for safety, reliability and ease of ownership!

I have had several recall items on my 2017 Kia Sportage. Any recall done has required a second trip to the dealership to repair their repair. My latest frustration is a blinking engine light that shuts me down and requires a tow. The first repair took 3 weeks. I only got a new harness and code entry to resolve this issue. My second blinking engine light and tow was resent in only a few days. Nonetheless, I have been stuck on the side of the road twice. On my first tow customer service treated me like a valued customer. On my second tow and contact to customer service I was advised I had used up my goodwill. Kia’s response being, “sorry”. I agree Kia is a sorry company. If you make a faulty product have some excellent customer service. I feel like a victim. Shame on you Kia. I am driving a car that I can’t rely on.

I really love my Kia. It runs well and smooth. I love the color. It is called Black Cherry so it is black with red sparkly bits in it. Very pretty when it is clean. It gets really good gas mileage, especially on the highway. I would recommend it to anyone. I do think anyone with teenage children would benefit as well. Good vehicle, lower insurance rates and good gas mileage. Would be a good reliable vehicle.

I purchased a 2018 Kia Sportage in Jan 2018. About three weeks ago, the brakes began to make a noise while driving. The noise would subside when the brakes were applied. I took it to the Kia dealer who informed me that the front brake pads and rotors need to be replaced due to wear from excessive rust. I find that explanation to be absurd for a number of reasons. I did not observe any rust on the brake pads or rotors ( i took photos) and I doubt that rust is abrasive enough to cause wear. Ferrous oxide is not very hard compared to the material of which brake pads and rotors are made. After failed attempts to reach the kia Factory representative, I filed a complaint via the Kia Consumer Assitance Center, but have had no response. I have purchased an extended warranty in addition to the 10 year, 100,000 mile factory warranty, however, brakes are not covered. BEWARE of this VEHICLE and the KIA's lack of concern for their customer.

I have the 2020 Kia Sportage. My husband has the Kia Sorento and I like how it handles the road. It’s smooth, handles bumps well and mine not so much. It also doesn’t have turning signals on the mirrors or any bells and whistle; very disappointing. I was attracted to the color, Pacific Blue, with these sporty new black rims, very eye catching but over time I wished the car had more. The 2020 does not come with a satellite ready radio. I guess a smart phone can lend the car it needed capabilities. It has a nice kick on the road for a 4 cylinder. All and all the car lacks a lot of simple amenities and if I had to buy it again I would go up to the S model. The lane assist sucks and the rear view mirror is a bit small.

Door handles should never break off a car, Never. Although I like my Kia, there are over 30,000 views on youtube about videos and door handles breaking off. Yet, Kia does not see this as an issue, they should take care of. For this reason, I will never buy another KIA, and I will never go to the Kia Dealer where I bought my car.

I have a 2017 Sportage with 60,800 miles. The heater does not work, only cold air comes out, and the driver's side rear door won't open. The locks open and close but the door won't open. I brought it in to my local Kia Service and because I am over my warranty by 800 miles, I will have to pay over $1200 to repair both problems. I have NEVER had a 3 year old vehicle that has had these types of issues. I have filed a case with Kia Consumer Affairs and am waiting on their decision.

I am a 67 year old grandmother. I leased the 2017 Sportage thinking it would be a safe vehicle to transport my grandchild in. I began to question my decision upon hearing of the numerous spontaneous engine fires in Kia vehicles. I eventually turned the car in 3 months early. I made the payments for the months I didn't have it. The car was in mint condition with a little over 5000 miles on it. I was allowed 36000 miles for the 3 year lease. Imagine my surprise when I got a $427 bill three months later! I called Kia Motors to ask what the charge was for. It was a "lease termination" charge. I am so sorry I leased a Kia vehicle. I will never deal with Kia Motors again. Lessee Beware!!

I love driving my 2017 Kia Sportage. It handles very well and has a lot of nice features. The dealerships have been great taking care of any problems we have had and keeping us notified of any recalls that need attention. A problem I have been experiencing is the location of the rear turn signal indicators. I live in an area where folks like to drive near the bumper of the vehicle in front of them. Due to the signals being so low and wrapping around the side of the Sportage, the driver following cannot see the signal when engaged...especially in the day time hours. I have been nearly hit from behind multiple times and several have even passed me when I was in the process of making the left turn. Trying to change lanes when the roads are packed with other commuters is also hard to accomplish due to the signal not being noticed.
If the turn indicator could be integrated into the brake light, it could be seen by everyone...no one seems to pay attention to anything below the license plate and near the bumper. This is a safety issue and a design flaw. I called the Kia consumer affairs department and all they said was the design team would be notified...I do not feel that was a satisfying answer.

OKAY I believe Kia customers support line was ridiculous!!! They need to retrained they’re employees on giving information telling them that Kia will cover something for you when you have full coverage warranty and then go around saying they won’t!! I’ve been dealing with my case for month and half now and Kia still won’t cover it!! What’s the put of having warranty when they do nothing for you!! In my eye I believe with that employee on the phone telling me kia will cover the bill that Kia should still cover it since your employer is telling customer wrong information but now they’re saying it denied.. Very RIDICULOUS!!!

Love the Sportage but the engine began ticking while on the interstate. Within minutes the ticking turning into local banging. No engine warning lights, nothing at all. Engine is blown. We have meticulously maintained this car and gave the records. 139K miles and it is now dead. Dealer diagnosed engine failure consistent with other recalled Kia/Hyundai motors but they refused to replace engine. Kia corporate (consumer affairs) was very helpful at first but as soon as the dealer confirmed a defective engine consumer affairs has gone silent. They do not return calls after at least 10 messages.
BEWARE of the 2.0L and the 2.4L Theta II engines. They are defective. Kia recalled only a small number of them. A large number are failing. Google "Kia engine failure" and start reading. Never ever buy a used Kia. Even replacement engines are failing. Don't expect Kia/Hyundai to stand behind their products. 131 complaints on NHTSA site on this specific make, year, and model.

I bought a 2013 KIA Sportage in 2015, paid cash for this vehicle because everyone raved how these vehicles are so good and dependable, had the vehicle for 3 yrs., and my engine blew. I was at a stop light and went to take off and my car sounded horrible, I pulled in to a gas station and called my brother and asked him what it was he replied shut it off your motor sounds blown. So I had to pay out of pocket to have it towed to the closet Kia dealership where they diagnosed my car as having a blown engine due to the bearings, and that my estimate was $5,768.90 to be fixed.
That’s when they told me about the recall for several different types of Kia's however unfortunately my engine isn't covered under the recall. Which after reading several other peoples complaints it doesn’t appear theirs is covered either. Which is confusing to ME!! Right now there are approximately 1.4 million Kia customers that are experiencing this same dilemma. And to find out Kia isn't going to help me replace my motor! I have taken care of my vehicle and have had it serviced FAITHFULLY EVERY 3,000 MILES.
I have went through every step there is through Kia to see about them adding my engine to the recall or some kind of “goodwill” assistance to cover this expense and they told me that my car has to many miles, or I’m the second owner, to you name it I’ve heard every excuse, My miles on this car is 139,864. And the recall claims unlimited miles. So explain that to me. I have had the run around from so many Kia employees at the customer assistance center it’s unreal. This is ridiculous. There are thousands and thousands of recalls for this issue, and Kia knew these motors were bad and still sold the vehicles.
For someone who is single like myself and rely on driving something dependable and can't afford something else or the outstanding amount for the repairs, Kia leaves me with nothing. Now do I not only have nothing to drive, have to gets rides to work, or borrow a vehicle, while still paying monthly insurance on my vehicle because I don’t want to be in trouble for having a vehicle in my name and not having insurance on it, but paying for something I can’t drive! Not to mention try to figure out how to come up with over 5, 000 dollars to fix this issue, Thank you Kia!!! I will never purchase another Kia again.
Something needs to be done about this issue not just for myself but all the other people who are going through the same thing I am. This is such a financial burden on me all the way around!!! And yet Kia does nothing. It shouldn’t matter how many miles I have on my car, or if there’s a warranty, they knew the engines were bad and still sold them anyway, I didn’t pay for a car or an engine that was only going to work for 3 years!!!! I tried to get a loan to replace the engine and nope who’s going to give me a loan for an engine. Back to square one.
UPDATE: as of the beginning of March 2019 Kia offered to pay half of my motor, they only paid 1,600 which sticks me with the remainder of the bill that I would like them to pay for. Not to mention because my engine blew my car sat for approx. 6 mo. waiting to get a motor, I ended up having to replace my brakes all the way around my car from sitting outside all winter long and my brakes were rusted and when I drove it they would stick. I’m still paying on a loan for 4,168.00 and not to mention the mental anguish for the whole situation because of having to take time off from work, and not having anything to drive, and having to borrow a vehicle to drive to get to work, due to the fault of Kia and their faulty engines.

3. Feels like the gears disengage and then reengage.

I’ve taken the vehicle to Kia of Irvine, 45 Oldfield, Irvine, CA 92618, 3 times, plus once on the 11th of April which they claim they have fixed it (I will see). Plus called and spoke to the Service Mgr that the car was doing the issues mentioned above. The first the technician diagnosed that the transmission had to be reprogrammed. Well according to them the vehicle was reprogrammed. Then that was not the issue. They tested the vehicle again and it was determined the voltage of the battery was low. So, a new battery was purchased and installed by Kia of Irvine, 45 Oldfield, Irvine, CA 92618.
*Neither the reprogramming of the transmission and new battery has fixed the issue. * The issue has been ongoing. I bought a 2018 Kia Sportage less than a year ago. I bought it for four main reasons. Reported reliability (failed), Panoramic Sunroof (failed 2x), Warranty (they can't seem to fix anything), and the dealership's service agreement and extended warranty (dealer no longer exists). So, as you can see Kia has failed miserably with every single reason I chose to buy this car. At about 6K miles, the Sunroof stopped working and wouldn't close. The dealer (same one I bought it from) told me there was "nothing they could do to help me" and that I "should put it in a garage." Eventually they replaced the motor in it, but it still doesn't work. Closes part way and then reopens. I have to manually push it shut.
But, it gets better... At 17K miles it breaks down and goes into limp mode over an hour from my home. After an extraordinarily stressful and miserable time stuck on the side of the highway in the cold for over six hours. Kia tells me that IF it's a warranty issue, they will reimburse me (partially) for the car I had to rent. Now, three weeks later, Kia tells me they won't honor the lemon law (12K mile limit, though it's less than a year old) and they don't know when I will have it back. They have offered to reimburse my car payment for the downtime.
But here's the thing, they replaced the sunroof motor, and it still doesn't work, what on earth makes me believe that if they replace the engine in the car that it will work and that I won't be trapped on the side of a highway somewhere again? I can never trust this vehicle again. It is a lemon and Kia refuses to make it right by offering me a new one. I will never buy another Kia again, and as soon as this lemon is paid off, it's being traded in. Buyer beware.

The nearest certified Kia dealership is 3 hours away. The entire steering column had to be replaced. There was no way I could have safely driven it over windy, snowy icy roads to the dealership. I notified Kia customer service who said instead of having it fixed locally I should have paid the tow. How would I get to work? Purchased a 2019 KIA Sportage in September 2018 and discovered after the purchase that KIA does not supply a jack and spare tire, just a mobile tire kit which consists of a compressor and tire sealant. If one was to get a flat tire which was not repairable, the mobile tire kit is useless. A tow would be require and that tow is only to a KIA dealership if it is under the roadside assistance option. That is only good if it is within the dealership's business hours, otherwise you will be stranded. Never would have purchased this vehicle if I had known that there was no jack or spare tire. I contacted KIA about the issue and they don't care. Love the vehicle but not KIA as a company. Once you have purchased the vehicle and they have your money, all caring stops. 2016 Kia Sportage is a nice car, dependable, easy to take care of and wonderful gas mileage. I love how far I can go on a tank of gas with this car. I love the OnStar and telephone through the car. I like the Headroom and the sporty look and it makes this old grandma feel sexy. I would definitely recommend this car to all my friends and this car is easy to haul around my pets and on a long trip. The price was in my range and I also like my payments. I love the color. It is a nice car to travel in and you have lots of legroom and it holds everything I need. But I dislike the insurance premiums for a new car. I had rented the car previously and enjoyed the experience, and I have had this vehicle since 2012. My overall experience has been outstanding. My KIA Sportage has proven to be dependable and a car I can count on. It is sturdy and drives steady on the roads, definitely not a light weight vehicle that's blown all over the road. The interior is pleasing to the eye with comfortable bucket seats and a dashboard that's easy to read and conveniently displayed. The backseat of the vehicle has ample space and plenty of leg room. The overhead of the cabin has enough height to feel roomy and not cramped. The trunk area of the car has plenty of space and there is additional space if you fold.
I liked the sporty look of the car while it still could be called a family car. I really liked the 'pick up and go' of the car and how responsive the braking and steering were. It was a fun car to drive and still made sense to own. I wasn't expecting that I would be able to afford the car and was very happy with the listed price. But, the GPS in the vehicle really sucks. It's not accurate and gives wrong directions and out of the way direction on a regular basis. KIA's GPS is undependable and has landed me in some dangerous neighborhoods on several occasions. It also tried to route me 300 miles out of my way on one occasion but I caught the err before anything happened. I've gotten into the habit now of connecting my iPhone to the KIA's Bluetooth and using my iPhone for directions. Much more accurate and something I can depend on.

It has lots of little extras designed for driver and passenger comfort. Gas mileage is too high at 23 mpg highway though and 30 in town. It needed serious repair work at least 5 times and it left me and family stranded on the roadside 3 times. I had to have bought somebody's lemon. Also, it's easier to find parking spaces because this car is small. But I would change the windshield wipers. It is weird as there is two different size wipers. I figured I was still under warranty since there is only 90,000 miles on the car but no. So now I have to pay over $3000 to have a new motor put in. I don't have that kind of money. Should I also say that my husband thinks it's my fault because he thinks that I wasn't maintaining the car until I showed him receipts. Kia needs to accept responsibility for bad motors.

I leased my 2014 Sportage and within a year my car needed a new engine with less than 20,000 miles on it. Then my gas tank meter went and then my Catalytic Converter went-remember this is a brand new vehicle with little to no miles on it. Of course everything was covered under warranty except each time they would find something that wasn't covered to get you to pay for something... Also, they took 2 payments out of my account and refused to refund me for one of them! Customer service is awful, they barely speak English and do not work with you. All they do is lie and when confronted they claim there is nothing they can do. Total BS! I WILL NEVER EVER PURCHASE ANOTHER KIA-even with my lease up in May 2018 and I MOST DEFINITELY WOULD NEVER REFER SOMEONE TO KIA FOR ANYTHING!!! This company should be ashamed of their product and employees!

I had to take my KIA Sportage 2017 for oil change after hitting 5,000 miles as is always recommended. On the said day of service, the service tech recommended tire rotation as my car was hitting 20,000 miles which seemed reasonable to me. After the service was rendered and my car was pulled out to the sally port, I drove home but as I was sitting in my car, I decided to check my tire pressure just to make they had right psi. Apparently, I was amazed because my tire pressure were the same before the service and after the service which made me conclude that even the tire rotation was not done.
The worst case scenario was when I was driving from work from night shift and the temp had plummeted so bad, the roads were icy and the caution and tire pressure light came up and all my tires were blinking yellow because the tire pressure had fallen to a dangerously 25 psi. It was a miracle I made it home safe because the road conditions were terrible with zero traction. This left me wondering, how could it be possible that a new 2017 KIA Sportage could malfunction that bad within 3 days of service and yet I was charged $ 86.09 for both oil change and tire rotation. I regret everything abt KIA. As am writing, I have to get my car towed to the dealership.

My 2017 Kia Sportage also caught on fire after I drove twenty miles after an oil change at the dealership. Kia or Kia dealership will take no responsibility for this! Apparently the wonderful warranty they give you does not cover a car with 14000 miles on it, 2017, I guess you take your chances of it not catching on fire because they give you nothing!!!! Also never had a problem with it and only had it serviced at the Kia dealership!!!!

I bought a 1-year used 2011 Kia Sportage specifically because it had the 7 year bumper to bumper and 10 year powertrain warranty. The sales person at Stamford Kia knew I was impressed by the warranty but neglected to mention that the great warranty was NOT transferable. The dealership also refused to certify the car saying it cost too much. Their car never drove well and it was noisy. But I was operating under the assumption I was covered if anything major happened. Well, after 6 years and 87,000 miles the engine blew due to a piston. The car is not under warranty and the recalls for the 2011 Sportage do not include my vehicle. I've been the proud owner of a Honda, Toyota, Subaru and Lexus. Many of the cars lasting 13+ years and 160,000+ miles. NEVER have I had an engine die after 6 years! I would not recommend a Kia after my sudden loss of a car.

So I bought a used 2015 Kia Sportage in June 2017, with 41,000 miles on it. Fast forward to nine weeks (August 23) and 2,800 miles later. I was driving on the freeway at night when the check engine light came on followed by all the service lights, then I suddenly began to lose power. Luckily, I was in the slow lane and coming to an off ramp. I was able to get the car to the off ramp signal when it quit altogether. Long story short, I called the dealership I bought the car from who told me to tow the car to Kia service dept. since it was still under the factory warranty.
After Kia looked at the car, they asked for all the service records or else it might not be covered. Of course, buying the car used, I did not have any service records to give them. They ran a diagnostic and told me it needed a new engine and because there was sludge in the engine, the warrant wouldn't cover the repairs. To make matters worse, they quoted me a price of $13,000 plus tax to replace the engine. $13,000! That's more than I bought the car for. According to Kia service dept, the reason for the high quote is because Kia stopped making long block engines so they would need build it from a short block engine. Really, Kia?
You already come up with ways to back out of honoring the factory warranty but then charge consumers $8,000 extra because you decided to stop making engines for the 2015 model? It's a totally insane price. It's a Kia for goodness sake, not a Mercedes. Fortunately, I had an out through the dealership I bought the car from. Since it broke down within 3 months/3,000 miles of the purchase, they took the car back - confirmed the engine was shot, and told me I could have a used engine put in it or they will roll back the purchase. I am definitely going with the rollback. Which makes me sad because I always wanted a Kia Sportage and was very happy when I bought one. This experience has made me feel that Kia does not stand behind their cars, and I will probably never purchase a car from them again.

I leased a brand new Kia Sportage 2017 in September of 2016 from a Kia dealership where I live. At first I was thrilled to have a brand new car and loved everything about it. Had my first issue back in September right after I got it. Took it in for service about 2 weeks after for an alignment because my car steering was pulling to the left. They told me there was damage under the car where it looks like I wrecked. I know for a fact I did not wreck or hit anything to need an alignment. I know that I purchased it like that. I was just too naive at the time to think anything was wrong with it so I paid the 100 bucks for the alignment and that was that.
June of this year 2017 I noticed some changes in the way my car was driving. When I would go to accelerate to any speed it seemed my car wasn't shifting properly. It was making a very loud noise when trying to shift and my rpms would just bounce around back and forth not making it into the right gears. Getting ready to take it on vacation for the first time I took it into my dealership, explained to them the noise it was making and what I felt while driving. I left it to them to fix it. They called me maybe an hour after I dropped it off and told me it was fine and I could pick it back up.
Next day I go down there, take my car off the lot and immediately can tell it was doing the same thing I brought it in for so I called and asked them what they had done. One service tech told me it was test driven and they heard nothing wrong. The other service tech told me it wasn't test driven and all they did was run a few diagnostic tests and it all checked out. I told the technician I wanted him to hear what I was talking about so I had driven it while he sat passenger to show him what I was experiencing while driving and he told me that the loud noise was just my car "breaking in" and because it was only a 4 cylinder that's what it sounds like.
Meanwhile my car had only about 5000 miles on it at this point and I know plenty of other people with 4 cylinder vehicles that don't make the same noise my car was making but I said fine. You know he assured me it was fine and that was that. I took it on vacation (a 6-hour trip from Pittsburgh to New Jersey). The whole way up my car made the ridiculously loud noise. I directed my husband who was driving to just be careful. On the way back from vacation it did the same. Was just loud and jumping gears and struggling to get to highway speeds. 3 hours into the trip back we break down, car engine is smoking, car overheats, car loses power. Luckily we made it to the side of the road.
So this is the first time this has ever happened to me so I use my UVO system that Kia wants to claim is so efficient. Talk to the first representative. They let me know that my tow will be covered to the closest Kia dealership and they dispatched them and they will be arriving within 78 minutes. So we wait... about an hour goes by and I receive a call from the tow company Kia linked me with and he tells me that he can't find us. So let me see. My car has GPS. Kia gave them my location. I told them what road I'm on, what road I'm looking at, what mile marker I'm sitting at and I even texted the man and dropped him my location from my iPhone. He tells me he needs to wait and hear from his boss to find out what to do. So I call roadside assistance again and they tell me it's gonna be another 78 minutes and they contacted another tow for me. So at this point I have to wait over 2 hours for a tow.
I then receive a call from the other tow company coming for me and they ask how many passengers I have because they can't take more than 1 person. I am traveling with my 5 year old and my husband so what did they expect me to do. Leave them on the side of the turnpike while I wait? I mean what kind of emergency assistance is this??? We are now waiting in the heat in an unsafe spot for over two hours and you're telling me now that you don't take passengers? So I call back AGAIN to my uvo roadside assistance, talk to another person and they apologize and tell me now I'm in danger, me and my family so they are going to now dispatch the authorities to come get us which I ask how much is that going to cost me and they claim nothing. Well after being on the side of the road for 3 hours a tow finally comes and picks us up which I paid 120 dollars out of pocket for since they were called by police.
We get towed to Harrisburg Kia dealership, have to then call an Uber to get to the airport to rent a car and get home from there. Cost me over 300 dollars to get myself and my family home. This all happened on a Saturday when the dealership would be closed until Monday. I called Kia roadside assistance and filed a complaint for having to wait so long to get a tow. I also had to get in contact with Kia customer affairs to get my money reimbursed due to their trip interruption policy and now have a case manager for that. I called Harrisburg Kia and come to find my car needed a new starter and my whole engine blew. A brand new car with 6000 miles on it that I lease. Now I am out of a car for at least two weeks they say and I have been getting the run around from every Kia customer assistance representative I talk to.
Both dealerships have yet to do ANYTHING for me as in it's been a week and I haven't even gotten a rental car yet so I'm missing work. I haven't been compensated for my time lost, money or anything and NOBODY can tell me how or why this happened to my car. Can't get a call back from my case manager or the sales manager at turner Kia Harrisburg. This is by far the worst customer service I have ever been dealt not to mention the time and stress I have dealt with in the past week and the money I have lost since I have no vehicle to get to work.
If anybody has any advice please contact me. I have called Attorney General’s Office, Lemon Law, both Kia dealerships I'm dealing with, roadside assistance, and Consumer Affairs. No issues resolved as of now besides a new engine they supposedly ordered is covered under my warranty. I want out of this contract with Kia. I don't feel safe in the vehicle they sold me. I don't want to make my 325 dollar car payment for this month considering I won't have a vehicle probably all month.

I own a 2012 Kia Sportage. Engine seized one morning on a busy highway on the way to drop off kids ages 3 and 4 to preschool. Had car initially towed to a mechanic that said that there were metal shavings in the engine and that it would need to be replaced. Since I paid for the extended warranty, I had the car towed to Kia's service center. I couldn't show proof of regular oil changes, so they said they couldn't honor the warranty which cost 3k extra at time of purchase.
Fast forward several months, we hear that Kia is recalling our model/year, so we wait patiently expecting a recall notice in mail. Didn't receive any so I call Kia about it. They tell me that the recall was only for a GDI engine and not the DOHC engine that our car has. Same exact problem that everyone else is having with the worn connecting rod bearing but they claim that my model was made at a different manufacturing plant. Then why am I experiencing the same problem? All this BS is making me sick. I'll never buy a Kia again and will tell everyone I know the terrible experience we've had.

Kia misstated the actual mileage on our Sportage and other models. They admitted the mistake and promised to pay for that. However, to date, after 3 years, we only receive excuses of ongoing litigation. The car gets terrible mileage for a manual 6 speed only getting about 20 in the city and 25 on the road. Tires have been a constant problem and even buying them at the dealer for top price (since according to them only theirs work correctly) the uncomfortable ride and loud road noise persists. The dealer, LaFontaine Kia in Dearborn, MI offers no solutions. Only hands me a 800 number with a recording. I had to insist that the salesman stop calling me to buy another Kia from him as the car reached 4 years old. We have paid a lot more for gas and would have not purchased this car if Kia was honest about the mileage. If anyone has any solutions I'd love to hear them. Thank you.

On May 2016 I bought my first new car, a Kia Sportage 2017 SX-Turbo. I was excited with all the features, the power and the looks of the vehicle. However, after the first 5,000km that I put on that car, the spark plug broke inside of the engine, damaging all the pistons. After that, it was deemed necessary to have an engine replacement done, which took about three weeks. After a lot of persistence and calling the dealer/Kia Canada to get updates (because they won't call you) I get my car back. When asking for some sort of compensation, they gave me none.
Just to put this into perspective, this car is $50,000 after taxes, the engine + service costs around $16,000. Kia has a strict policy when it comes to replacement, as they do not replace, they only repair. After frustrating conversations with them, I was finally convinced that I just had a bad apple and that I should move on. However, 25,000km later the same exact issue happens. Not only did I need a new engine, but I got the same quality of service. Unresponsive, not caring, and feeling like I was worth nothing to them.
Another $16,000 was put towards my engine, and another three weeks of patiently waiting. When asking for compensation once again they offered me $500. However, I counter offered for a set of tires and rims that I needed due to the commute I have. No surprise to me, I got denied. Then I went to speak to the manager, and she was very adamant that she was doing more than I should have gotten. And when I asked her: "Do you think this resolution is fair, due to the circumstances I was in?" she simply threatened me by saying: "I can always go back on to our policy and not give you anything."
The customer service representative I spoke to at Kia Canada was named Joseph. He can, with no shadow of a doubt, vouch that I have only been patient, understanding and I have compromised where I had to compromise. However, when you would expect a company to go out of their way to make you feel good about your purchase, they did the complete opposite. Not only will I never buy a Kia, I will never step in their dealership, and will never recommend. The "best" part of it all is that I not only am basically leaving empty handed out of all this, but I also lost money on my car. Because people will not value my car as much as they would anymore due to the engine having to be replaced twice already.
Kia simply does not care about its customers. It does not care about the quality of their service, and at the end of the day, they do not care if you are not pleased with their service. When matters of business, they are following all the rules that are given to them, because their rules state to not offer anything (LOL). In matters of morality, and maintaining a healthy business to customer relationship, there is zero effort. And if they tell you they do put in an effort, it is a negative effort to make you not enjoy the experience at all.
Bottom line is this: I had two engine replacements done to my car, amounting to $32,000. I stayed without my car for six weeks. I pay around $298 Bi weekly. The logical thing to do is at least give me around $900 which would be the amount I stayed without my vehicle. However, to Kia, not only did they offer only about half of what was logical, they also lost a customer, and potential many others as well. The best thing is that when you complain about the dealership, they say that the dealers are privately owned, but when you complain to the dealers they ask you to contact Kia Canada.
Just do not buy a Kia. Just do not do it. Because if you face a similar problem, you will not be treated well. And if even after this you still want to buy a Kia, I hope you do not get put through this experience. I have about 3-4hrs of call recording with Kia from just this past incident of me just trying to reason with them and me not getting the quality of service you would expect after getting a major issue.
I will leave you with an analogy to close up my thoughts. Imagine you buy your first house, you chose everything and it is your dream home. However, after the first few weeks you have no more electricity in the house. You call the building company and they come and fix it, but you have to move out of the house for a couple weeks because they have to break a few walls and rewire a few things. Not only do they fix everything, but they also give you credit on your mortgage equivalent to the amount that of the seriousness to the problem you had. Now imagine that happened a second time. Of course you would be frustrated about the problem repeating. However, because you know they handled the problem, the first time, properly, you do not worry. Kia does the opposite of this.

I researched everything in my life in the way of activities, job duty changes, etc. The only major change was my trading in of a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer for the KIA.
I wouldn't normally attribute back issues like this to a car seat until I talked with my daughter who at the same time owned an identical 2010 KIA Soul. Without prefacing my question I asked if she had experienced any back issues driving her Soul. I bought a 2012 Kia Sportage in 2014. It had roughly 80k kms on it. Come November of 2016 I received a letter that there was a voluntary inspection notice and a warranty extension of up to 200k due to poor manufacturing and potential sludge buildup in the engine causing poor oil flow. December of 2016 my engine seized. No engine, no oil pressure light. Nothing. The vehicle was paid for so I had a non-dealer mechanic find and install a used engine for me. All said and done 8500 plus taxes, etc. etc. End result there was no oil showing on the dipstick. I had checked a week prior and it was fine. No visible leaks or pools on the ground.
I take a road trip to Colorado from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. I had no more than 5500 kms on that engine and it seized. Again, no warning. This time the oil level is fine but my mechanic had no explanation as to the cause. Now with a mass recall coming out May 19th I ask kia if I will be reimbursed for my engine. Of course the result was no. The customer service rep claims it went right to the top of kia and that was their answer.
The company has admitted there is a major problem with the 2L turbo and the claim was because I didn't let them inspect the engine they can't do anything for me. They just finished telling me the month before I was over 200k and out of luck. On top of it now I'm also advised that if the current engine seizes I can call them to see if they can help me out at all but I'm not counting on it. So now I'm afraid to travel by car, can't sell this vehicle for more than what the scrap metal is worth and I'm out 8500 I didn't have to begin with. Thank you kia!!!

I leased a 2017 Kia Sportage SX Turbo GDI, Fully Loaded (it has everything you can think of except for driver memory seat). The car is very sporty and good looking, and that is all the good stuff I can say. I leased the vehicle April of 2016, the vehicle operated good 6 months and that is when the problems began. On September 14, 2016 I took the vehicle into the dealer because of a check engine light (only 1,682 miles driven). Spent about 2 hours of my day at the dealership to be told that the code was a turbo under boost and a misfire, they cleared the code and said not to worry and gave me my vehicle back. Also there was a recall for rear door latch replacement to be done on vehicle, I set appointment for the following week for that recall. On September 21, 2016 I took the vehicle in for the recall of the rear door latch assembly, another 2 hours of waiting at the dealer for repair.
On September 28, I had to have the vehicle towed by roadside assist to the dealer because when I started up the vehicle in the morning there was a strong fuel smell coming for the vehicle. I called roadside assist in the morning to pick up car from my driveway, was told, "The tow truck would be there in about an hour." Tow truck did not make it to my home until late evening to pick up vehicle. Got to dealer and was told that an animal got under my vehicle and chewed on my fuel line (this was not covered under my warranty as the part was not defective, I told the dealer that, "If the fuel line was not made of soy-based products the animal would not have chewed it thinking it is a food").
I have three other vehicles on that same driveway and none of them have ever had a fuel line or any other parts chewed by animals. I was told that I have to pay for that repair and also would have to pay for a rental while the order part and repair the vehicle. Which I believe I should not be responsible for (I ended up paying for that repair and a car rental). At time of repair the vehicle only had 1924 miles on it. On October 5 I take the vehicle to dealer for a check engine light again which was the same problem as original check engine light on September 14. Waiting again at the dealer. Another day wasted. They came back and told me that they had replace the 4 spark plugs as because they were bad, they even tried to tell me that, "The spark plugs ruined because of the chewed fuel line" (I told them that, "I am not that stupid to believe that, don't give me a flame shooter story"). The vehicle only had 1938 mile at that time.
On December 23 the vehicle broke down in the middle of the street in rush hour. I called roadside assist and was told they would have a tow truck there in 60-90 minutes. The police had to come and divert traffic while waiting, the officer came to my vehicle and asked if roadside assist was on their way, which I responded, "Yes." He asked me to call and find out how long before they get there. I called them back about 30 minutes after my original call to get ETA, and was told, "More than 2 hours." The officer told me that, "We cannot block the road for so long" and he would called a tow truck to take us to dealer, which I had to pay for. We get to dealer and I had to argue about getting a loaner vehicle. The dealer checks the car the next day and finds that it would not turn over.
A week later they tell me that my vehicle needs a new engine, (my vehicle only had 2538 mile on it at the time). They order the new engine to replace original one. All the time I am stuck with a rental which was not equal to what I leased and still paying my lease. Finally I received my vehicle back on Feb 1, 2017 hoping that this time it will be okay, still have not received the tow that I had to pay for on Dec. 23, 2016. I told the dealer, "The reason I buy/lease a new car is not to have mechanical problems to worry about" (they don't care once you buy the vehicle). I WILL NOT BUY/LEASE ANOTHER KIA.

I purchased a brand new Kia Sportage from Kia Swan Hill. I purchased the car 2 hours from where l lived as they had what l was after & the best deal at the time. A couple of months after l brought the car I received a recall letter in the post. I rang Kia in Bendigo as it was closer. They asked me to drop the car off & leave them with the spare key. I explained that l did not have a spare key. They explained that all new Kias come with a second key regardless of what Kia showroom you purchased it from & was told to contact Kia Swan Hill where l purchased the car from to enquire about the spare key that l never received, because if l accidently lock my key in the boot l would not be able to retrieve it as the car would lock. This news concerned me as l had no spare key.
I rang them & they said they would get the man who sold me the car to ring me back. A few weeks later l rang again & was informed that the seller has since resigned. They said they would email the manager & ask him to ring me. I waited another couple of weeks & ended up in Swan Hill for the day with work & called into Kia. I was in the work car & was informed Kia couldn't do the key without having the car there. I explained that l was only there for the day & that it was a 2-hour journey to bring the Kia back to them. So they said they would send the new Key in the post to Bendigo Kia for me to collect. I waited another few weeks & rang Kia Swan Hill to be told they had sent the Key to Kia Bendigo.
I rang Bendigo Kia & was informed no key was ever sent. I was not happy & rang Kia Head office. I explained the situation yet again & was informed a key would be sent out & to my delight a key arrived in the post & that it would need to be programmed before use. I booked the car in at Bendigo Kia & when l dropped the car off. They said they key needed to be cut first. I had to drive to into Bendigo lock Smith & pay $25.00 to have the key cut & when l returned with the key, Kia Bendigo said it would cost me $80 to have the key programmed.
I was disgusted that l had to pay & rang Kia Swan Hill & asked to be reimbursed the $105.00. They said that would not pay they money & that l needed to drive the Kia to Swan Hill to have the key done. I explained that l had already lost a day's work running around the car back & forth to Kia Bendigo & to the lock Smiths & for the recall. Explaining that the 4-hour return journey there & back to Swan Hill in time & petrol would cost me even more in the long run. So I had no choice but to pay the $105.00. I am appalled the amount of time, loss of earnings, the cost of petrol & phone calls l have had to put into the retrieval of a second key & of which l should of received on the day as l drove my new car out from the showroom.

I took the Sportage to Nielsen Kia in Michigan City, Indiana. They offered either a rebuilt engine for $4,700 or a new engine for $7,000. I opted for a rebuilt repair. The dealership said it would take one month. After a month, I called weekly and got lots of excuses. After 82 days, the engine arrived at the dealership. It wasn't a rebuilt engine. It was new and would cost $8,600. What's another $3,900? Regardless of that unethical move, the new engine was faulty. It couldn't hold compression. Kia technical services got involved and determined that the new engine had the wrong piston rings. The only solution was to order a 2nd engine to replace the 1st engine which I didn't agree to anyway.
The dealership said it would take a couple days because they already had a tracking number. After a week, I called and the dealership response was "Well the 1st one took 82 days so who knows?" At this point I called Kia Customer Service thinking they could get an answer on engine inventory and escalate the situation.
1st customer service agent was professional but offered no help and after 2 days she informed me that my case was being "escalated" to the "escalated department." Sounded like I was getting somewhere. I was naive. 3 days later, a nice sounding person named Darlene from Tuscon, AZ called to let me know she held my case and would be calling the dealership to find out when the engine will arrive. I asked her to clarify because the reason I even called the customer service line was because the dealership and no idea. All they had was a tracking # that was useless because presumably the engine never shipped. Darlene told me that THIS type of engine was on a big back order list.
I asked Darlene was is the wisdom in calling the dealership to ask when the dealership is more in the dark than anyone? She said she had their phone # and would call. I asked when she planned to call? She said in 2-3 days. So then I asked when she calls and finds out that indeed the dealership did place the order, what then? Then she said she'd have more information to share with me. I asked if the information would entail a delivery date? She said no, but she would have information. She raised her voice, talked over me and was quite fed up with my line of questions which were basically "Who can find out delivery dates?" and "When will we know this type of useful information?" I know, how rude am I?

I bought my 2013 Kia Sportage 2 years ago. Last month, a large clatter came from under the hood. We took it to the dealer and they said the motor was blown! 71,000 miles on it, all oil changes and maintenance records were given, and Kia only offered half on the parts leaving me a bill of $5000. I was second owner so the original warranty did not apply. I said I wanted the whole thing covered and they refused. To make it worse, the dealer suggested I let it be repossessed after buying another car from them first! I no longer trusted them so we moved it to a private shop and paid $4700 out of pocket for a refurb engine installed. Kia is horrible. They do not back their product. Buyer beware!

I think that if they are still being made with the same principals then I would TOTALLY recommend this make and model to friends, family, and even strangers.

I own a 2013 Kia Sportage and over the weekend my daughter got trapped in her seatbelt, and I had no choice but to cut the belt off of her. I went to my local Kia dealership and they were great, they rushed ordered the part and said it would be fixed in two days. Today I called Kia Corporate and they were completely awful, and messed everything up for me. They called the dealership and stopped them from working on my car.
The people that work for Kia Corporate are rude and beyond insulting. They said things to me that I could never imagine a customer service representative saying to a customer. They told me that I don't care about my child's safety, and then told me I called three times today, and that apparently I can't listen to what they are telling me. That's right. I called three times today to be run around the bush and I spoke to three different people who were all equally rude. What kind of people do you have working for your company? My 7 year old daughter treats people better than your customer service agents. I'm so fed up with the way that I was treated that I will trade in my Kia and never purchase a Kia my whole life. I would never recommend anyone to buy a Kia just on the fact of how rude the customer service treats their customers.

I purchased my Kia Sportage in April 2015 brand new. A few months ago I started to have problems with the engine turning over and starting. I have gone to the Kia dealer twice and they cannot duplicate the problem and so they can't fix it... no error codes either. I have videoed myself starting my car and when I emailed it to the dealer's service manager, he said that is normal. How is a car that has less than 9,000 miles, with one user and on-time maintenance having a problem starting and you tell me it's normal? I've owned many different vehicles in my lifetime and this by far has been my worse experience in purchase and use of a vehicle. I cannot wrap my head around it. I am a freelancer and my work is contracted by time. I need a reliable method of transportation and right now, my new car is not reliable. What will it take to get this cleared up?
This started a few months ago and it is getting progressively worse. I got ripped off on the price so I'm making payments on a new vehicle that is less reliable than my old Nissan that had 175,000 miles on it. This is not acceptable by any means. My business is on the line here. No one can figure this out as to the issue. If you can't figure it out, then give me a new car or transfer my lease to Hyundai and I'll get one of their which I had no problems with. Kia should take responsibility for this vehicle's problems but I find that no one cares and I'm stuck here with a new car with low mileage and problems starting the car.

I own a 2013 Kia Sportage and it has been giving me headaches. I was just bathing in sweat a few minutes ago because the aircon is blowing out hot air. I am from the Philippines and the temperature outdoor is 37-38 degrees celsius. As early as a little over a year old, my car had several parts replaced like the power window switch, the aircon ECV, the right horn button works intermittently (but was not replaced by the dealer). My door handle was also replaced because the whole thing came off. Outrageous isn't it???
Two months ago they just change my entire engine because they cannot solve the problem of the engine losing power (shakes at the speed of 40kph). The dealer was diagnosing my car for over 10 months before they gave up and suggested to change the whole engine. Just imagine how many days my car was spending in the repair shop considering it is less than 2 years old. I never had this kind of problem with my Honda (used it for 12 years without these problems) and Toyota cars. I am the only person who drives my car. But not anymore, the mechanics at the dealership are driving it a lot of times since 2015.
I have written to Kia several times and they just seem to throw my email to the local dealership here to fix the problem. My dad bought me a Kia Pride before to practice on, and I know it is of low quality at that time. I thought they improved a lot since it was named car of the year in other countries. I might have been misled by their expensive advertisements. I am so frustrated with Kia now.

Notice a oil leak under my 2012 black turbo Sportage this morning. Call Kia to bring in. Only had this car 6 weeks. My Kia Soul was totaled out in a car crash. Always loved Kias. Had it for 5 years. Bought it off the floor with 9 miles on it. Mind you the Sportage was used but looked great. Handled great. Was a lease and well taken care of. Bought the SUV on 4-18-2016 and that Friday sent it to service for wheel locks, free car wash. While in there for a few hours, tech kept car running. Went to pick it up, battery was dead. Had to get a jump to drive my "new" car home.
Three weeks later picking daughter up from physical therapy car won't start. Call AAA, they test battery, tells me it's done. I need a new one. I shouldn't stop anywhere, it won't start without a jump. Drove it home and called around for a battery. Kia battery was more expensive. Called triple AAA back, they brought me a battery with a better warranty. Needless to say, not happy. Before you sold me this car, did you all check the battery? It was the original battery in there. So its shelf life was over. I should have took car back then but I loved my black car.
Today June 2 ,2016 notice oil leak. Call Kia, I know they can fix it and it will be covered under the extended warranty I bought. They can get me a loaner or rental car if I need it. I am very upset. Had the car for 6 weeks and it's in the shop. I put 6000.00 down on that car. I have a warranty. Needless to say, service department says it is not covered. My heart dropped, my blood pressure went up. I told her, "You have to be wrong." She says "No." It cost 534.00 and some change. I was like, I have to pay. I kept saying, "I only had it 6 weeks. Just made first payment on it." She said, "Yes" and on top of that, they have no loaner cars. Since it is not covered by the warranty, they can not put me in a rental.
All this time, I am getting more and more upset. I called the warranty company myself and they say not covered. "We don't cover pipes." The oil pipe leading to the turbo has a crack. That is why it is leaking. Of course service department didn't notice this in their inspection when they checked the car before selling it. Been going around and round with the service department and manager. I told him, "It's not fair that I have to pay for this, warranty or not. I have been a faithful customer there for almost 6 years. Always took my Soul in for service when it needed it and this is how you treat your loyal customers. You're a big company and I am a divorced mom of two." For good customer service and loyalty not to mention the big fact, that I have had the car for 6 weeks - 6 weeks.
The manager would not budge. I asked for my 6,000 back, he said he couldn't do it. He can't take the car back but would put me in something else. I don't want anything else, I want them to fix it on principle or take it back. He wouldn't do it. Made me feel unimportant. My money don't count. "Oh but I will get you a loaner until yours is fixed. It can happen to anyone," as if that would make me feel better. He had no compassion, did not care. I told him that I have always talked about Kia to everyone I know. Was proud of my Soul, loved my new Sportage. Now I can't say anything good about them to anyone. You don't treat your long time customers like that. Insignificant. Nothing.

KIA is ripping people off to the tune of $1,700 to $1,800 for their faulty ABS brake controllers plus labor. It is a widely know problem that brake fluid seeps out of the back of this unit onto the circuit board and causes a variety of safety and mechanical issues. A year and a half ago I experienced a problem with the ESC traction light coming on, followed by a flashing 4x4 light and then finally a check engine light. The worst part about this is that it then SLAMS itself into first gear going down the road! YES, YOU HEARD THAT CORRECTLY. This can happen very quickly. KIA, YOU HAVE A SAFETY ISSUE! I replaced the unit with a used one for $350 plus installation and now it has the same problem a year and a half later.
There were two possible controller units for the 2008 Sportage and they look identical but are not interchangeable. The other one I can purchase new, direct from South Korea as an OEM part in a Kia/Hyundai box for around $500. But not this one, they know they have a serious safety problem as this can unexpectedly pull you down to a crawl in heavy traffic. They also have kept the price extremely high on this unit to maximize profits on a safety item they refuse to fix. I'm looking for another used unit and then I'll DUMP this LEMON. I was told by the Kia mechanic that something broke loose inside the engine and damaged the cylinders, so there is no compression and I need a new engine. I bought a 2016 KIA Sportage a few weeks ago. It had 35 miles on it when I took ownership. On the way back up the mountain where I live (1.5 hours), the entire screen went out. No navigation. No radio. No hands-free. No back-up camera. No cruise-control... No $30,000 worth of equipment I had JUST paid for. So I called Arapahoe KIA and they told me to bring it in. Great, 3 hours round trip and since I work M-F 8-5 there was very limited openings. I took off work to bring it in the next week. 1st time I brought it in, they looked at it and said, "Oh, it's working" (as my new little vehicle had intermittently chose to work on and off throughout the week I'd owned it). I explained that the screen went in and out, and the man at the service center then said that there was nothing he could do if it was working when I brought it in, and that it was probably a fluke.
2nd time I brought it in (3-hour round trip + 3 hours taken off work), they said "Oh, we'll take care of it, we'll just order a new screen." 3rd time I brought it in (3-hour round trip + 3 hours taken off work), they said "Oh, we need to run diagnostics on it. Bring it back when it's convenient..." IT'S NEVER CONVENIENT! I live in a ski town where I can barely get in and out due to ski traffic and weather related road closures!! 4th time I brought it in (4-hour round trip + 4 hours taken off work) they hold onto it for 5+ hours, and I then receive a phone call saying "we've got bad news. Our diagnostics software is outdated and it's going to take a week or 2 to get the new software to run the programs we need..." I bawl my eyes out and proceed to reluctantly call another KIA dealer with a service center. I tell them my awful story and they say, "ma'am, come into Peak KIA over here on Wadsworth and we will get you all take care of..."
I ask a friend to drop me off at Arapahoe KIA and dash through mad Christmas traffic to the other side of town. Once there, I ask to speak to the gentleman I'd spoken to before, and he seemed to have very little clue who I was. He then took one look at my car and said "Oh, it's working. There's nothing I can do about it unless it isn't working." With tears in my eyes, I said "Chad, do you own a KIA?" His response was "No, I own a Subaru." I left, came home, and wrote this review. I intend on sharing my experience with as many people as possible. DO NOT PURCHASE A KIA!!! DON'T DO IT!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!! Get a Toyota, a Nissan, a Datsun, I don't care, but DO NOT PURCHASE A KIA!! They need to be held accountable. This is just poor business and laziness at its worst.

Actually, I have purchased 2 Kia automobiles. The first was a 2013 Soul and the second was 2014 Sportage. In 2013, I purchased the Kia Soul in New York and the 2nd time I purchased the 2014 Sportage in Nutley, NJ. I like working with both dealerships, and I loved going to the service at Nutley Auto. They are the best! Thus, this review is not reflective of the dealerships themselves.
However, the reason I am writing this review is because both of these cars were declared totaled in low-speed, side-street accidents. I dismissed the first one because the Soul is very small... so I assumed it was the car size that was to blame. There was also engine damage. However, I just lost my 2014 Sportage as well since it too was declared totaled. There was absolutely NO ENGINE DAMAGE in that. The impact was drive side doors. I was advised by the body shop that the way Kia assembles their cars that when one seat is damaged, all must be replaced. Most of the car was in fine condition, yet it was totaled.
Since I put down about $9,000 down on each vehicle, I lost a great deal of money on these cars. I did have a warranty problem with each car, but as I advised, Nutley Auto Service is wonderful. Now, perhaps all of today's vehicles are made this way now, but I tend to doubt it. I just don't want to see someone else go through something like this. Personally, when I purchase a car, I like to hold onto it for a while. It appears with Kia vehicles, this is impossible!

Where do I start? First I had my Sportage for about 1 1/2 years when it started bogging on me then quit. I called Kia roadside assistance and they sent a tow truck after waiting in the cold for over two hours. I got to the dealership where the car was purchased not knowing they had no idea that I would be coming into the shop. I told them who I was and they looked at me like I had 10 heads. There was about 6 people at the service counter area. The one service rep and only female there said "Why would we know you're coming?" I lost it at that point. I ended up talking to the owner Tom Ring of Brown Daub Kia. He actually said to me "You do know that oil and vinegar don't mix well." I said "well if I would Not have been treated the way I was when I came in then I wouldn't be vinegar."
It took them 10 minutes to find out that I had a cracked coil. He (Tom Ring) said "We are going to fix it under warranty but I would dump the car." Trade it in!!! I guess that should have told me something at that point. While I was there I told them that the transmission slips sometimes, but of course they couldn't find the slip. That was actually the second time they checked it. Ok so here we are 2 years later and I'm driving my car and it stops. Called Kia roadside assistance to have them tow the car to Lehighton Kia. I called about the car since I heard nothing from them. I was told that the motor is blown and that it has a low end knock. I called corporate to inform them of the situation.
I go to the dealership because I want to see the pictures they took. The service manager shows me pictures then showed me another picture claiming it was from another vehicle. He claimed there was a low end knock in the engine. For all I know they are from the same car. I get a call from corporate saying they will not replace the motor because I did not have receipts for the oil and filters I purchased to do oil changes. The service manager said that I may have bought bad oil. Really. I'm paying monthly car payments to destroy my car. I used Castrol oil 5w 20 which is what it takes. And that's not cheap junky oil.
My brother had gone there and took pictures and no sludge. I asked the service manager how they got the car started. He said they didn't. They pushed it into the garage and pushed it out. So then how could they know there was a low end knock if they didn't hear the engine running. Well needless to say I called the bank to do a voluntary repo. So here I am without my car. I also have a Kia Rio with 177k miles on it and no problems. But believe me I will be reporting this to better business bureau and filing lemon law. And I will definitely never buy another Kia and will discourage anyone from buying one. I'm so infuriated right now!!!

Even if the gas pedal is depressed it would not go faster and engine stays at 2000 rpm. Brought it to Kia Service Center and they checked the computer for errors but scanner did not detect any. They replaced the consumables like fuel filter and Automatic Transmission Fluid to no avail. The service advisor recommended the ATF replaced because according to him the ATF is burnt.
I am the only one who drives my car and I drive in a very regular manner, no overspeeding nor towing. How can this be? Burnt ATF at 28k miles is caused by some factory defect. I've read a lot of transmission problems in Kia cars. I think Kia should know what is wrong with their transmission design already. They should not keep on recommending consumers to replace the consumables when in fact what should be replaced are the parts under warranty. Very disappointed with Kia.

While heading to Predator Ridge Resort, my vehicle died just at the old toll booth rest stop. I called the warranty service and they immediately got in touch with a tow truck to Kelowna so I can continue my booked vacation. At this point, I was impressed and my 9-year-old daughter felt safe and taken care of. I even took the liberty of calling ahead to the Kelowna dealership alerting our arrival within 3 hours.
Once we arrived, we waited an hour to find out nothing and was shuffled to a Rental Company. I was promised to be given a vehicle that I could drive back home to Vancouver once my vacation was over as this is part of the Travel Interruption insurance. Also Kelowna decided to freight my car back to Maple Ridge for the Warranty work. We arrived to Budget and found not only wasn't there any vehicles in the price promised ($30 per day) but I couldn't drive it home to Vancouver or I would pay a repositioning fee of $600. I called my husband in Fort St. John in tears and he called the dealership demanding they pick us back up. All they could say is that everyone had gone home. However, Service is stated to be open until 6pm. It astounds me that by them knowing I was stuck on the side of a HWY that it was acceptable!! I then took a $120 Taxi ride to Predator Ridge and tried to enjoy my weekend. I then asked for a ride from a stranger and they were more than happy to drive me home.
Once at home and no correspondence from KIA for 3 days, I called them to see where my car was. They didn't know where is was and in fact was 2 days late being towed back to Maple Ridge. Monday I called KIA Canada to complain about the service and I found my car was at Applewood KIA not the Maple Ridge KIA. They didn't have a courtesy car. In fact, I live up on a mountain so I had no access to anything. They then told me that I had to supply all my receipts for maintenance in order for them to look under the hood!
Finally, They got me a car, called me in the evening and tried to make me feel bad for holding it until the following day. I told them that I had no way of getting there and that I'd expect a shuttle there. They told me no. I called my father-in-law to drive me and once we arrived in his BMW, THINGS changed. I got several apologies and explanations of what was going on with my car thus far. I got loaner car and I was on my way. I then contacted my local licensed mechanic for oil change receipts and they were provided which I forwarded to KIA via email. They said it was exactly what they were looking for as per documentation of Maintenance.
Since last night, approx. 410 pm, KIA has been prank calling my mechanic not leaving names or asking about my service. Call display and myself complaining had confirmed this. After talking to KIA Canada, they stated this call wasn't required nor Professional. However Applewood KIA is stating otherwise and quoting a conversation that never happened. This correspondence is all on record.
I'm looking for answers and help with this and as it stands I don't want to deal with KIA anymore nor do I want to own a KIA. I'm mortified by the treatment. How can I get the service I'm entitled to and paid for? I am sick and tired of calling a call center that doesn't have any authority over any of this, nor do they want o get involved with he said she said. I PAID FOR A WARRANTY AND SERVICE that I'm not getting.

My AC suddenly stopped working at the end of June. I live in Missouri - it is hot in June. I initially stopped at Meineke to see if I just needed a recharge. He told me it was completely empty so most likely had a leak. I was covered under warranty so I took it into my local dealership. The mechanic explained that debris damaged the condenser and that it is not covered by the warranty. He was VERY apologetic and explained that this is a known design flaw in this model of Kia Sportage and that it would not have happened if the AC had been adequately protected. I had to spend $108 for my dealer to tell me that Kia will not honor the warranty and that I would have to spend $750 to fix (300 for a condenser and 450 for supplies/labor). That is a lot of money to have nothing fixed!
My dealer wanted to fix the issue but told me they called Kia and Kia would not allow it to be covered under the warranty. I called the customer service line and spoke to "Steve" and that was a horrible exchange. He spoke over me and would not let me explain the issue and refused to escalate my issue. I want to expose how disloyal this company is to its customers. This is wrong. This issue is not due to driver error or an act of God. It happened during the course of regular driving. I am disappointed that Kia is willing to alienate its customer base because they are unwilling to admit that the issue is due to poor design.

I bought a 2008 Kia Sportage from Fucillos dealer in Syracuse New York. I have had my car for three years. I have kept up with the maintenance. I have did regular oil changes every 3,000. I recently took it it for schedule oil change, and was taking a trip to Florida to see my uncle who is dying from stage 4 lung cancer. I made sure to tell them to check everything good so I would be safe on my trip.... Needless to say, I got an hour away from my destination and my car made a noise and shut off.
I had to have it towed and have my family come and get me and my children. When Kia looked at it to diagnose it, they say it blew because of sludge in the engine. I asked them what caused the sludge and they said not enough oil changes. I told them I did regular oil changes and she said I didn't do enough. I asked her then how many should I have done.... I kept my records of my oil changes and still they will do nothing. Did I mention that there is only 47,000 miles on my car... I had to rent a car to go back home while they were looking at it seeings how I had to be back to work and kids back to school. It took them 3 weeks to tell me they are not doing anything for me and it is at a Kia dealer where they now wanna start charging me storage fees for the car being there.

I still have a 2012 Kia Sportage SX. In a nutshell, Kia will do anything to get out of warranty work. I had the car serviced several times, for detonation noise, melted spark plugs, and finally, engine failure. While towing my 1,100lb camper... It's rated to tow 2,000. The engine detonated so much, that it blew the spark plugs apart, and melted a hole in one of the exhaust valves on cylinder 3. Kia said the camper was too heavy, and I've been battling them for 2 years in court. They refuse to fix it. I repaired the exhaust valve myself, but then the engine flooded itself with unburnt fuel, mixed in with the oil, and ruined the engine bearings. There is a BIG problem with my Sportage. And Kia is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to cover it up. JOIN MY LAWSUIT and contact my attorney. He'll be more than happy to add more lawsuits to Kia's lawyers.

I may have opened the roof a total of 5 times since I had the vehicle, repairing it was more than I owe on the vehicle. What a joke...NEVER again! I purchased a 2002 Kia Sportage from a private party in February 2013. I had a mechanic check it out and he said was in good shape. I brought the car to Kia in Wallingford and had an oil change done and had their 20 point inspection done. They found several things wrong with the vehicle. I began to repair those items. They never told me that the frame was rusted near the differential.
In January 2014, I brought my car to another mechanic because of a loud clanging noise coming from the rear and he said that my frame was completely rusted through and was too large to weld. Why did Kia not see this? I have been doing research and found that there are hundreds of complaints on this very same make, model and year for rusted framework. There is only 101,000 miles on this car. There should be a recall for this problem.

Case Number # **. I've never written a review on anything in my life before, but for KIA, I would just to help consumers make better judgement before buying a KIA. I bought my 2012 Sportage (fully loaded) at the end of 2011 and its extended warranty. Since day one when I took the car home I realized a lot of issues started happening. My rear driver door hinge is off and doesn't close unless you slam it really hard, the panoramic sunroof cracks open on its own, the gas valve ejects every time I go to pump gas because it thinks the tank is full even though it’s on empty, the sound system just died on me at 35k miles, and the front sunroof has to be manually opened and locked in before I can open it (never heard of this before).
I brought the car back to fix the same issues 5x and yet they always gives me excuses like your audio system warranty expires at 36k, the door hinge doesn't work because your side wheel has been hit (this happened way before it got hit and was recorded in their system since I notice the issue early on and took it in for service, they gave it back not fix and now blame it on me when I took it back in a 2nd time after it got hit), the sun roof needs to be manually opened, the gas valve is very sensitive in new cars that's why it ejects the pump, etc.... I've reported this to Consumer Affair, and along and behold, nothing happens. So if you are a customer, think twice before buying a KIA. I'm in the market for a new car, and I think I have better luck w/any brand other than KIA.

In April 2013, my wife and I bought our 2nd new car (ever) 2013 Kia Sportage. We felt like this was a great price w/ the warranty. How could we go wrong? Well, we went wrong! Since then till now (11.30.13) our Junktage has been in the shop numerous times for the same problem, (Raw Gasoline) fumes coming through our air vents, when driving or when the car is parked you can smell the (Raw Gasoline) odor outside the car, so much so that it fills the garage with (Raw Gasoline) odor and at one time it filled our garage to the point where it came upstairs into our house (our garage is below our living quarters).
Every time I have taken the car to the dealer, they said they could not smell any (Raw Gasoline) odor, they even replaced the fuel rail, so they said, but to no avail. Still stinks! Now at 10k, I still have the (Raw Gasoline) odor coming thru the vents and seeping from around the outside of the car, and through this all, I now have a squealing brake problem that has developed. I took the car to the dealer today (11.30.13) and told them what I thought was wrong. They checked the brakes, the supposed (Raw Gasoline) odor and said the car was fine, not a problem, safe to drive. HUH?
The car goes back in on December 9th for the alleged problem (again). I"m sure I'll get the same results. This Car and Kia are useless and unreliable. I have contacted Kia Canada about this problem and they said they are doing all they can (how about a new car???) Raw Gasoline is DANGEROUS... What would KIA do if my house burned down because of this problem or a fire started while driving my car? Will they say they did the best they could? Or was it because of sludge in my engine? Not their fault? I've had it with this new car and KIA. This week I'm getting large lemon yellow vinyl letters and attaching them to my car and it will be seen and it will read "Another KIA Lemon". I hope this will help all the other KIA owners and new owners to be, NOT to buy KIA products EVER!

Right away I told them that I paid extra for extra coat of clear coat, but they showed me some gallons of brown liquid and a rag and said it was applied. This is not what I thought I was getting for the extra 2000. Within a month, I complained that my cigar lighter did not work and my left remote control outside mirror did not work; they did nothing. I complained the next 4 times every 3,000 Km between oil changes and services. Still nothing was ever fixed.
The dealer at one time wanted to charge me 10,000 RMB for a scheduled service call under warranty so I left and never went back. Now moved to a new city, I have called Korea and searched for another dealer or service center near my home but after checking each address there was no Kia or Hyundai dealer found. Now my Sportage seems to have lost 2nd gear in the trans and I still cannot locate any help or dealer in my area. Originally I wanted to buy 2 Hyundai cars, but not locating a dealer made it very difficult. One big strange difference from a Sportage in the USA and mine in China is that mine has a frame that seems to have been glued together in 8 in to 12 in sections. Was it meant to have such a chopped up frame?

We purchased our 2011 Kia Sportage new from Wyoming Valley Kia, Kingston, PA on May 02, 2011. In June of 2012, at 12,000 miles, we found the a/c not working and we made a service appointment to have it fixed. WVM Kia stated the system was low and added refrigerant and dye to the system and stated they could not find where the refrigerant leaked or if it was just low. We were advised by them to inform them when and if the a/c stopped working again. No repairs were performed. Our Sportage only logged 364 miles from July to November of 2012. We had use of other vehicles. We live in Pennsylvania and the a/c is not generally used from September to May.
In May of 2013, the a/c was not working again and we returned to WVM to have it checked. At this service visit, WVM said that our condenser had a puncture in the front caused by road debris damage and denied warranty coverage. They did not show us where the leak was and said it would cost over $566.00 to fix the a/c. We declined the repair. We were charged for the diagnosis. We took the Sportage to an independent a/c repair technician because we accepted the diagnosis of WVM that the condenser was not a warranty issue. What was found was the a/c condenser did not have a puncture in the front. The condenser had a scrape from top to bottom in the rear causing the dye and refrigerant to leak out. It was necessary to use a black light to locate the dye and the leak. The area with the leak can only be reached or viewed with the condenser removed. There were about 4 tiny leaks that must have ruptured with age and exposure to the atmosphere.
It was clearly a defect in materials and workmanship. The end user cannot reach this area. We had a new condenser installed by the independent technician for less that the amount quoted by WVM and the a/c was repaired. We took the failed condenser to WVM to show them what was discovered. WVM said they would show the condenser to the Kia American Motors factory representative. The outcome is both parties deny responsibility for the failure and stated that due to the age of the vehicle from the time it was assembled in August 2010, we should have reported the failure sooner. Their reasoning is the a/c would never have worked. This is poor customer service from both entities and they do not honor the specified warranty for the Sportage. The vehicle should have been repaired in the first service visit in June 2012. Time in service is irrelevant. Kia does not stand behind their products.

They are pretty nice. So, I was considering buying a 2013 KIA Sportage but my wife said over her dead body. Thanks to consumeraffairs.com, my head is once again screwed on tight.
On another note, these vehicle service centers are very skilled Kanivers and have an answer for every situation. They're cold blooded and feel nothing. They get paid to save the company money. These places always seem to hire the pretty boys with the baby face, so when they talk to you, they look truthful and honest but the horns, claws and tail are there somewhere. It's a scam and everyone is in it. You just can't point the finger at one person. It's a chain of command. Everyone wears the same outfit.

I compare my Chrysler 300 v6 high output to the Kia, and the Kia goes through a lot more gas than my 300. Is there something wrong with the car? It should never consume that much fuel. For the last few months, when driving my 2009 KIA Sportage, the steering locks up. You will be trying to make a turn and the steering will just lock up. You have to jerk the steering wheel back into place in order to get the steering wheel to start working properly. So I take the vehicle to Witham Auto Service department in Waterloo, IA. When I got there for the first time, the technician informed me that the vehicle was okay because he jerked the steering wheel and got it going right. Really? This is not normal! So the only thing they could find wrong with my vehicle was a slightly loose ball joint. I laughed at them and informed them that this would not cause the issue. So, of course, I let them fix it so they could not say I did not do it right when this does not work. So $474 later, I drove my Sportage away and it locked up again. I took it back to them and told them that it was not a ball joint. So they have been back and forth with KIA trying to figure this out for the last three weeks.
I was informed that Consumer Affairs was involved since this is a safety issue. Yesterday, I got a call from Witham saying that per KIA's request, they have been performing pressurized test on it and can get the steering to lock up inside the shop now. They told KIA the results of the test; KIA told them to replace the power steering pump and the gears in the vehicle at the same time. This will only cost me $2,100! KIA said they will have nothing to do with this because the warranty has expired on the car. They are not even sure this will fix my issue. They want me to pay $2,100 on a possibility of a fix. It is 3-year-old vehicle and they could not care less if this vehicle kills someone. I have read on the Internet where some individuals have had this happened and other power steering issues. One guy has put in 3 different KIA pumps. If I fix this vehicle, I will go to the part start and get the parts cheaper.
KIA should be ashamed of themselves! I will never purchase another KIA! Consumer Affairs should step in and deal with these issues, especially when it is a safety issue that could get someone killed. You cannot tell me that a power steering pump should die after 3 years. I have one vehicle that is 12 years old and I have never had a power steering pump issue. We have another vehicle that is 16 years old and it has never had a power steering issue. What does it take for Consumer Affairs to get involved and get KIA to recall their vehicles?

We purchased this 2006 Kia Sportage, new, from Peterson Autoplex in Boise, ID in February 2006. On 10/06/06, we brought the car back to Peterson because the air conditioner was not blowing cold at all. At that time an internal failure in the compressor was found. A new compressor was ordered and put in the car. By this time the weather was cooling a lot, and it seemed to be okay. July 16, 2007, we took car to Nampa Kia because again, the air was not cold. At that time, we were told we needed to replace the in cabin air filter (at a cost to us of $58.04.) This didn't really seem to make a big difference, but, not wanting to complain, we got by.
Now, April 14, 2008, we took the car to Nampa Kia for an oil change. Told them at that time that air conditioner was still not working right. Supposedly, this was checked and we were told it was working fine. April 29th, 2008, it stayed cooler with the windows open than with the air conditioner on, so once again, we took it to Nampa Kia. This time (only 15 days later), we were told the Freon level was low (they couldn't give us a reason), it was decided that the compressor was still not engaging and was faulty and needed to be replaced. May 14, 2008, after several calls to see if parts were there (once, the compressor was ordered and sent back), we again took the car to Nampa Kia, the compressor was replaced again (twice now, in 2 years). The tech tested the air and said it was 39 degrees. It seemed to work for a couple months, and then, began feeling warmer again.
When I called to schedule another appointment, I was told that Edmark was buying the Kia dealership, so because again, the weather was cooling, we waited. I don't have the exact date that I took the car to Edmark Kia in Nampa, ID and again told them of the complaints with the air. My windshield wipers also needed replacement, so I scheduled an appointment when the parts were to come in. When we took the car in, after several calls, we were finally told that the parts were there, the wiper blades were replaced (cost to us $56.02) but the compressor wasn't there and nobody seemed to know what had happened to it. So, again, we were told that it would be ordered and we would be called when it came in. This was November 8th, 2010.
We called a few times, were told it wasn't there and they would call when it was. During this time my sister in CA was diagnosed with terminal cancer, so I was traveling back and forth to CA. My husband was here taking care of my 90 year old Mother and our 16 year old granddaughter that both were living with us. With all the emotional and tragic things happening in our family, we just kind of forgot about the air conditioner. Now, come this year, we are planning a trip to CA in 2 weeks. Once again, the air is not cool (a friend who rode with me today, said it was more like a heater on low than an air conditioner). I called Edmark Kia to schedule an oil change and to have them once again do something about the air conditioner. I was told by the service person that he would have to talk to his manager, because it was now "out of warranty, and we would have to pay for it." He talked to the manager and one of them called my husband and said there was nothing they could do about it, and we would have to pay for it. My husband then called Peterson's to talk to their service department and we were told they no longer have the Kia dealership.
We are so dissatisfied and angry, I can't even tell you. This has been an ongoing problem since the car was not but a few months old. I can't understand why, it has never been properly fixed. I do believe we have a lemon law in this state and surely this would fall under that category. We were even talking about trading the car in for a new one when we returned from our vacation. I can assure you now that it will not be a Kia, or any other car that Edmark sells. We will now have to try to make our trip, with both our Mothers, one is 90 and the other is 82, in the heat, through Nevada and CA with no air conditioning. Sad, isn't it. You buy a new car and have only put 60,000 miles on it, have had it into the shop, numerous times for the same problem, yet, the company won't stand behind it. I would and will advise anyone I know, not to buy a Kia.

If you shift one way, then the airbag light does not work. They said that even though I am an adult weight, it has to do with how the passenger sits in the seat. My teens who are heavy enough also have this issue. The manufacturer says that if they are close to 110lbs, the sensor may not work properly. We are all over 110lbs. This is not right. The manufacturer should have to correct this issue. This is unsafe that me or my family may not be protected if a crash occurs and the airbag sensor is not working properly. The salesman was a close friend's father-in-law so I trusted him. He called me with the offer of these vehicles at a price I could afford, knowing I needed a safe car for my 16 years old son and a car with remote start and under warranty for me. He promised both would be thoroughly inspected and 100% prime condition before I pick it up.
I picked up the Kia first and the remote did not function properly. I left it there as I picked up the Ford and they promised it was fixed. As I drove off the lot with the Ford, I immediately noticed it didn't drive right. I turned around and went back and they promised they would fix the following week. After a couple of weeks of them having each vehicle for days/week at a time, they kept saying both were great with a smile. Neither operation condition improved one bit. I sat in the owner's office and he promised to come up with a solution in the following week and has blown me off ever since. I have a dangerous and barely running Ford that my son cannot drive. I have a Kia with a non-functioning remote. I gave up and have counted the Ford as an expensive loss.
The Kia should be fixed under the warranty. The problem being, Kia motors will do nothing to help. They said I have to take it to the Kia dealership to be fixed under warranty. The Kia dealership will not respond to my request for service. There is no other Kia dealership within driving distance not owned by Skip **. I am lost as to what to do. After doing research, I have found it should be an easy fix. I don't think I should have to pay to have it fixed, I believe it is the responsibility of Kia motors.

My name is Thomas ** of ** Derby, CT 06418, **. I own a 2010 KIA Sportage. This is my first KIA product and so far the vehicle is enjoyable to drive. I have approximately 10,000 miles on the vehicle. I have had one issue with the vehicle since I took ownership and it has been frustrating and my contact with service has been completely useless with regards to resolving the issue. It is an electrical problem with the vehicle. I have had little or no good AM radio reception in the car. It has been in for service twice.
The first time, I met with the service manager to explain that there was a loud whistling sound from the speakers when I use the brake, making it impossible to listen to it. There is also noise when the wipers are on. I showed the issue to the service manager at KIA of Milford, CT. He agreed it was a problem and assigned a technician to work on it.
I got the vehicle back the next day and was told that the technician would need to contact the online service people to find the problem and I would get a return call. After a month with no call, I called and was told that there was no information but I will get a call soon. I called, approximately a month later, and still there was no response.
I made another service appointment and sent the vehicle in again. Approximately 45 minutes after dropping the vehicle off, I got a call from the service department receptionist, who told me the technician said there is nothing that can be done. The technician was able to get the stations he listened to and found no problem. When I explained that there was a problem, she told me it was because of where I lived. I told her the problem exists along the entire route I take to work, which is over an hour of driving. She then told me she would have the service manager call me back.
This never happened. I then called the customer service 800 number and spoke with a lady who was named Shanon. She listened and told me she would investigate; but, her records did not show me as the vehicle owner. I purchased this vehicle as new and am concerned it was not. She called me back a week later and said she spoke with the service manager of KIA Milford, who told her there was no problem. When I insisted there was, she told me she would send a regional service manager to look into it.
I never heard from the regional manager but approximately 2 weeks later, I got a call from the KIA Milford service manager who told me that my problem with the radio is that it was a poor product, and that all KIA Sportage had this issue. I asked him why he would state that they produced and sold an inferior product; and he just said there was nothing wrong with the radio other than they don't work well. And, he offered to have me listen to another KIA radio to see that they all did not work.
I am very disappointed that they did little to solve the issue. I had to keep chasing them for an answer or follow up that a regional service manager never even contacted me or looked at the vehicle that I was told the problem was where I lived; and that my service manager told me in short, "We make a lousy product. You bought it. Now, you have to live with it because we know they don't work and will do nothing to make our customer happy." I was even told to buy a new radio and put it in the car -- just not a KIA radio. Being new to the product line, I have owned more than a dozen vehicles. I have never once had an AM radio reception issue with any of them, but have found that KIA service does not seem to want to even try to fix the problem.
I called their customer service line again and was told no regional service managers talk to customers; and extensive work was done on my complaint, and it was unfounded. The customer service 800 line representative then hung up on me. I now have a moisture problem coming from the A/C unit. It smells moldy in the car all the time. I called the same dealer and was told that it was how the A/C works, and that there is nothing that can be done to remove the odor, but it is not harmful. Really? Is that the best they could tell me? Enough. Someone needs to stop this and make these car dealers accountable.

In august 29, 2010, I took my 2006 Sportage in to be checked for a possible wheel alignment after I noticed I had extreme wear on all 4 tires. They changed camber kit and outer tie rod ends and sold me 4 exact same tires as what I had on the car, and they did a complete wheel alignment according to specs - to the tune of $1283.65. I have since driven 10,000 kms. and again the rear wheels show severe tread wear on the right and lesser wear on the left rear on October 31, 2010 and I took it to Kerrobert Paint and Body Shop where I requested they check out my alignment. That cost me $88.00 and got a printout of their readings in seconds and degrees. The printout is in full color and all marks are displayed. I also have it stated on the paperwork that they did not adjust any part of it and also recorded my odometer readings.
On November 2, 2010, I drove 5 hours to Calgary to Kia City and armed with my paperwork, I told Scott that their alignment printout did not match the body shops, and that the machines are all basically the same. He got his crew on it at once. The best they could tell me is it must have been in an accident. Their technician told my husband who was with me that he didn't think the car had been in an accident and that he did not know why the tires were wearing. To make a long story short, Kia has suggested I take it to a body shop and have them see if my frame has been damaged (they think I am stupid). I will have this done ASAP. I bought this car from Saskatoon Kia on January 15,2010, and was lied to from the start by Kia.
The car was manufactured in December of 2005 and the odometer showed 81,000 kms on it. I also paid out of my pocket to have the timing belt replaced on August 31, 2010 to the tune of $668.27. According to Kia's own service and maintenance record this should have been done before I bought the car, as it clearly states every 48 months or 96,000 kms, whichever comes first. I'm not a rocket scientist but December 2005 to December 2009 adds up to 48 months in my book. How about you guys, do you think maybe we should go back to grade 1 and learn basic math? I requested and got the history of the car from Saskatoon shortly after I purchased it.
At any cost I feel that my timing belt repair should be given back to me as well as my tires should have been replaced at no charge. I also feel that if my alignments were that far out then they should not have been able to have done a complete alignment. I will never own another Kia product again and would certainly never recommend them. I would like to be reimbursed for parts and service that should have been done from Kia as well as something for my travel time as the trip is 5 hours one way, and also the cost of the body shop if it proves that my frame is indeed not damaged and the problem to be rectified at Kia's cost.

We bought a Sportage in 2006. It has all the bells and whistles. A month later (08-17-06), we brought it in because the front end was way out of alignment. They said they aligned it. Three months later, the front end was out of alignment again. We paid for the alignment. We brought the car in on 7/23/08 for repair of bulbs and on 12/29/08 to fix engine light and on 09/16/09 for stop lamp switch.
Within that time we had the car’s front end aligned again, done again at our cost. On 11/23/09, we decided that we could not be paying for the front end alignments all the time and took the car in. The service manager (Serena) told us that the regional manager (Todd **) wrote her an e-mail stating that the front end alignment on our Sportage was not covered because the tires were worn and a good alignment can not be done with worn tires and the customer has to buy new tires and then they will consider the action needed.
Meanwhile, the Kia mechanic came in and said the front end is out of alignment and it was a problem; it should never have had to have that many front end alignments. He said, "If you have had that many alignments, that's why your tires are no good." He also said that to Sarena, who E-mailed Todd.I got no phone calls back. So I called the Regional Office and talked to a guy name Robert, told him my story, and he said he would get back to me. He never called me. After a month of calling around, I called the Regional Office and they said Robert transferred to another department and we will give you someone else. They gave me Todd **. To make a long story short, he never called back either.
Another month went by with my wife’s car pulling to the side of the road. I talked to Sarena and she gave me another number. I called and messed around with their computer system until I got sent to Angel (didn't get the last name). I had to tell him everything from scratch.
He said he would talk to Sarena. On 11/23/09, we brought the car into the dealership for two days while they tried to find out what was wrong. We also advised them (again) about the awful bumping under the driver’s feet area. They replaced (they said) the steering tower and some other stuff to try to find the bumping sound. When we picked up the car, they said it was fine. We drove it home and it bumped and pulled to the right just like before.
Sarena said she will call Angel back. He did not return my calls. Finally, I was told 3 weeks later that he is not working in that department anymore. They referred me to another Angel (1-800-** at Regional Office ext. 46596). I finally got ahold of him and I had to tell him everything all over again, most of which he said he didn't understand this and that. He did get back to me and said take in the car again 02/05/10. I don't know what they did, but nothing changed. Then Sarena told me that Angel said when am I going to buy new tires? I told her and them several times that the tires are worn out because we have been driving a car for 3 years that can't be aligned. Why is it that you tell me to buy new tires because an alignment can't be done correctly without good tires (that's true) so I have to buy all new tires?
Then your mechanic comes in and tells you that it’s a problem with the car, that's why the tires have prematurely faltered. Well, now it’s a whole different story. Sure, we can have the front end aligned without good tires. I told them you should buy me the tires, and then align it just like you told me. So, they aligned the car. We took it home and it still bumped and pulled to the right. On 02/23/10, I brought the car back again for diag. front end.
Then Angel #2 called me and said they would consider buying 1/2 of the tires because of the problem. I told them I would consider the offer, but should we not find out why this keeps happening. He said bring the car in and we will check it again. On 03/04/10, we brought the car in again. They checked it, couldn't figure out the bumping, nor the front-end problem and gave it back to us. I called for Angel #2 but got no response.
I talked to Sarena, she said she'd get someone to call me. Guess what, Chris (didn't get last name) called from Regional Office. He told me that Angel #2 was not handling these cases anymore and that he would be glad to help me. I spent at least an hour telling him the problems. When we were finally done, Chris told me that he would have to get together with Angel #2 to see what he had said about the situation, and he would get back to me. He never did.Sarena gave me Gary’s number in Honolulu. He called and I explained. He said to bring that car right into the shop and we will figure it out. On 05/06/10, we brought the car in for several days. I came in to see the mechanic (at Kia's request) and he had the car on the rake. He said this car looks like it has not hardly been driven. The bushings below the driver’s feet are not thick enough, so they hit and were probably making that bumping.
Kia does not make thicker bushings, so there is really nothing you can do about it. It’s a defect. The front end looks fine and I can not see any reason for the pulling to the right, except you need tires because the long span of driving the car without being aligned has worn out a good pair of tires. I told him, "That's what I've been telling them all along." He agreed, but said, "It's up to them what they want to do.” We went home the next day with the bumping and pulled to the right the same. Gary called and we had a very long talk about the car. He again offered 50% of the cost for tires. I told him I would talk to my wife and call him tomorrow.
At first, I thought maybe 50% was ok cause as Gary had pointed out. We did get some use of the tires and that might be fair. That was before I learned that the substandard tires that came with the car are only good for 20 to 30 thousand miles. They are as the mechanic said "** tires" that you couldn't even buy these tires in Hawaii or even the mainland. So if I go out and buy new tires (real tires) Mr. Gary is only going to pro rate a 20,000 mile trash tires, not the cost of real tires. It’s a shame: you buy your wife the first new car she has ever had with all the little goodies, pay 25,000.00 + 100,000 mile warranty and find out that it has "** tires” on it. That is insulting!
Makes you think—what else is **?
Anyways, Gary asked us to bring in the car so he could take it to a special alignment place (with ** tires on it), so we brought it in again on 8/23/10. They had it a few days. Sarena called us and we picked up the car. She said that the front end alignment is right on, so it must be the tires or something else.Well, it’s been a couple of months. Car still pulls badly to the right and thumps.
Sarena at the Hilo Service department quit. Now we have a really nice guy named Brian. Guess what, Brian has no idea what's going on with this car I and am slowly bringing him up to date.
I have asked four times for Gary to call me. Today is September 17, 2010 and I have still not heard from him, even after asking Brian several times to have him call me.
I think we have messed with these people long enough. Why can't they fix the problem? Why can't they find the problem? Is this car a lemon? I don't know. The car must be a lemon. If not, why can't they figure out what is wrong with it and fix it?

I just purchased a 2010 Kia Sportage. Guess what, it has already been back in the shop twice. It only has 1100 kms. on it. The air conditioner suddenly quit working. The dealership recharged the system the first time. Was that the problem? I was told it was pre-serviced before we took the vehicle from the dealership. Was it? My husband took it back today, August 5th. 2010. After leaving the vehicle at 8:00 am, he went back at 1:30 pm to pick it up. They can't fix the AC. He had to leave it. He was told they had to take the dash out and try and find the problem. It is a brand new Kia. What do you think is going to happen after it is driven for awhile? I am afraid to drive it not knowing what will happen next. If they can't fix the air conditioning without taking the dash out, what will they do if there is something really serious to take care of? I am making this complaint just in case something serious goes wrong, perhaps causing death or injury.
The dealer/owner Glen is not helpful in taking the client complaints seriously. He is a part owner in a car rental dealership. As the Kia dealership is on the outskirts of Grande Prairie, anyone having to leave their vehicle is not offered the use of a courtesy vehicle, but told they could rent one. If not for Jason, my husband and part owner of the Kia Sportage, I would have been obliged to either sit at the dealership all day or pay Glen's company to rent a vehicle, so as he could go about completing business he had to do up town.
I could see perhaps having someone pick a person up or making other arrangements if knowing beforehand that you have to leave the vehicle. However, being brand new, there should have been no question as to whether or not another vehicle should be available for your use until the dealership could repair the new vehicle’s problem. Someone should look at the conflict of interest at this dealership. Is this why customer complaints and service work are not taken care of in a timely manner? Most dealers try and keep their clients happy by providing a free courtesy vehicle, not offering to rent.

Kia has a recall for a tank replacement if the leakage is from the bottom of the tank due to road salt corrosion (Bulletin #014); however, it stands to reason that if the salt is on the bottom of the tank, it will fall off; but if the salt gets on the top of the tank, more than likely, it will just sit there and corrode the tank. The salt corroded the tank, and it was not designed to resist the salt. The fuel pump is located in the tank; therefore, it needs to be replaced, along with sensors and screws. Back in February I started to have some issues with my vehicle stalling out, at that time I noticed a gas smell. I had spoken with a friend of mine who owns a vehicle repair shop and he said it sounded like I needed a new fuel filter so I myself replaced it and it was fine for about two weeks, then the exact same problem started happening again, at this time I chalked it up to being bad gas. So I replaced the fuel filter once again.
Well this time my wife who drives the 2000 Kia Sportage had said that she was still smelling gas, but it didn't stall anymore. So this morning I get right onto the computer and started looking into recalls on this specific 2000 Kia Sportage. I noticed that the recall was all the exact same problems that we have been having. I had my wife call the number that was listed on this website for Kia and she spoke with a man named Ezekiel. He ran the vin and said, “No, there is not a recall for this on that specific vin but you can take it to Stokes Kia in N. Charleston.”
My wife said that the man was not any help at all and he said that he can just tell me to have it looked at and if that's the problem, I should have it taken care of right away. Well she then questioned why should we pay for this when there has been a recall on so many 2000 Kia Sportages with this exact problem. He said that it is not a recall but a repair issue that should be looked at by a Kia tech that would know if this problem is serious enough to have the gas tank replaced. He proceeded to give the number to Stokes Kia and she spoke to a man there (Brian) that told her basically the same thing and said that these websites are just troublemakers and that they don't have a clue.
Brian had asked my wife to read to him what it was she was referring to and she told him she would call him back. She then called me and I had her call the numbers that I found on the website for the Lemon Law which they referred her to the NY attorney general. She left a message on there and she also e-mailed this problem to the attorneys on the Lemon Law site. Just to inform you, on all Sportages, 1998 to 2000 model years, there is random engine stalling, on idle or while driving. Most of the time, it is a failed fuel pump relay or EGI control relay. Replace both at the same time. They are next to each other in the engine compartment fuse box. This is for all 1998 to 2002 Sportages. Also, in 1998 to 2000 Sportages, the screws for the main amp fuse come loose causing stalling and high resistance on the main power circuit. Check and tighten screws on main amp fuse in the same fuse box as the relays.
Timing belts, if original, will jump a tooth on the exhaust cam side, will have an extended crank and stalling. Vac leaks happen at small intake ports on top of the intake and one hidden in back. Rubber splits and will set a check engine light and cause stalling and random idle and hard starts. One more thing, fuel pressure reg leak at vac port causing a rich condition. This is more common when fuels with high amount of alcohol is used; it destroys the rubber in the regulator, leaks into vac to intake, to much fuel hard starts and stalling when coming to a stop. If all these things are looked at and repaired properly, you will have a more reliable vehicle. Reading these reports sounds like a lot of these technicians have problems with basic drivability troubleshooting.

Well, my boyfriend and I went to the dealership on Thursday. We wanted to test drive a new 2009 Sportage. We drove up in an older car. The salesman Eddy said something to the fact that I need to do a 5 liner. What was that? He was rude. I refused to go right into the dealership. I wanted to look around. Still they tried.. I was upset because we are good standing people treated like dogs, like we could not buy anything. Well just to let you know, we are 803 and 789.. We can buy. They found that out after the fact. They are a rude dealership. And it is a dirty, old, rundown place. How do you expect to sell cars there when everyone was running around, nobody answering phones and the bathrooms stunk? It's a dump. Try to treat your prey with some manners. Good luck.

I took it into Ryan Kia in Springfield for a recall of a fan blade, and I was also told there was a gas leak by a local mechanic. They told me there was no leak. My boyfriend patched it up and we were taking it in to Don Addison Collision in Lansdowne, PA on Wycombe, PA. They told me it is a fire hazard and the fuel tank has to be replaced or they won't work on it. It is supposed to be a recall with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission regarding an ongoing engineering analysis and investigation at the NHTSA. The analysis is examining the possibility that gasoline might leak from the steel fuel storage tank on some models of the Kia Sportage. I was told by Travis last time that it wasn't a recall yet, only the 1999 and 2000. The information I found on your website is. Can it be a covered recall? It is dangerous. It is hard to find a tank, and since they lied and said there wasn't a leak, I have a problem with finding out they did lie. Now I have some questions and need it fixed, so it isn't a problem or a fire hazard issue and it is Kia's fault.

I bought a KIA Sportage in 2006 and my mileage is 68,900 km. I have had problems at the very beginning with this vehicle. Recently, the vehicle was towed five hours from Watson Lake to Whitehorse dealership. The cost is near $2000 covering tow expense, hotel room, food, and other cost associated of being stranded in an isolated community. I have had nothing but problems with this vehicle and had to let it sit when it gets cold since it does not want to start. I do not know what the latest problem is - the vehicle just died. I'll find out soon since it will go into the shop today sometimes. It was towed four days ago and is now going into shop for a check over.
ESC lights comes on and does not want to shut off - took it to shop to have it repaired. Vehicle has been parked during winter months since it does not want to start. Work at to be done with underbelly wiring - snagged it on something and wiring came loose. This vehicle is SUV but very low and should not be taken into woods. Not safe since it breaks down easily. This vehicle is a real lemon if you ask me. The dealership only had this one grey Sportage and it had some mileage on it when I bought it. I paid cash for it at $26,500 plus other repair cost to it. I heard from various mechanics of the poor quality make of KIA vehicles and am wondering about recalls and class action suits. I can be reached by email. Thanks for listening to my woes and I am regretful of this purchase.

** Kia! My 2008 Kia Sportage was purchased less than 6 months ago. With 500 miles on it, I started having problems with the ESC light coming on (Electronic Stability Control). Mind you, when I bought the car, the dealer said NEVER TURN THIS BUTTON OFF because it is a safety issue, and is intended to stabilize 3 tires, if 1 tire becomes out of whack. Well, the light went off on its own, so I brought it in. A few months later, and this is the 4th time I have brought it in for the same problem. THIS CAR IS LESS THAN 6 MONTHS OLD.
Kia does not have loaner cars (red flag #1). But apparently, rental cars that they pay for ARE under warranty. I live in a household that shares 1 car. I work 2 jobs, and 1 of which is driving around the entire time. Never once did Kia mention that a rental car (from Enterprise) could be paid for by Kia. THANKS FOR NOTHING. We have had the rental for 2 days now. They still have no idea what the problem is, but apparently they re-wired the car. They also asked me if I would feel comfortable if one of our managers drove it to their home in Loveland (over 50 miles away from where we live), and drove it back to make sure the light doesn't come on. "We will replace the gas, of course." UMMM....NO! No, I do not feel comfortable with someone driving my car to their home and back, putting extra miles on my car ONLY because if it does break again, it will not be considered a Lemon, because I will never know it broke and therefore you can save your own butts?! So unprofessional, extremely ridiculous and so frustrating. I will NEVER recommend a Kia to anyone. EVER. To Kias everywhere- Thanks for nothing!

The gas tank leaks on the bottom of the tank and the KIA dealership in Southfield,MI said it was due to corrosion and rust and that it's not covered under my warranty. My 2001 KIA Sportage is under 50,000 miles. There was a voluntary recall for the gas tank that ended just a couple months before this vehicle was made. The dealership sold me the vehicle and an extended warranty after a 120-point inspection which should have shown an problem with the tank and knowing that there had been a recall and complaints about the gas tank.
If KIA is willing to replace the other gas tanks and admit they have a manufacturers defect, then why won't they fix the gas tank with the exact same problem made only months afterwards? It's unsafe and I can't afford to fix it unless it's covered under my warranty. My brakes lasted longer than the gas tank! I'm currently driving a hazardous vehicle and endangering myself and others on the road due to a manufacturers defect and neither the warranty company, the dealership or the KIA corporation is willing to help.
If the warranty covers a gas tank but not rust and corrosion, what exactly does it cover? The warranty on a tank that has a defect sounds fraudulent to me. It would cost me $522 dollars to replace the gas tank at the dealership. This is a danger to myself and others. I encourage a government forced recall for safety purposes. Thank you.

First thing i noticed was very severe wear on the inside of the front tires. steel belts were hanging out of both, but good tread still on the rest of the tires. Replaced both and got aligned assuming that was the problem. within two weeks i noticed a ticking sound when i would coast. It sounded like cards in the spokes of a bicycle. Turned out to be the front wheel hubs and were replaced with manual locking hubs for about $400 by the time the problem was found and fixed.
The next big problem started after about 6 months of ownership. It would hesitate occasionally while driving down the highway. It is steadily getting worse and now barely idles with the air running. As I accelerate, it sputters and jolts and hesitates until up to speed. The fuel filter was changed, but before taking it to the shop, i noticed the steel belts were hanging out of the inside of the tires again and had to buy new tires. They claimed that a the ball joint on the swing arm is loose and causing the extreme wear. we will see. meanwhile it is running very roughly. I've also replaced the driver's side headlight twice now, and although starting out bright, within 2 days, the new bulbs are barely lit at all. They aren't burning out entirely, just not lighting up very brightly. The check engine soon light stays on constantly and when it is started on cold days, oil leaks pretty badly from somewhere. It doesn't leak at all once the engine is warm or if the weather is about 45 degrees or above.

The car sputters and almost stalls out numerous times. I could be driving along at 55mph and my RPM's will drop, jerking me violently. Then the engine light will shut off and you can not detect a thing. Second all my power windows stopped working. The drivers side works once in a great while with a screaming sound. Third and most of all dangerous and important. I have gone through 4 sets of spindle and hubs in the past year. My bearings constantly break causing my whole spindle and hub to malfunction.
I was on the way home the other night with my 2 year old with me and my car suddenly swerved to the left for no reason. It did this a few times even after I slowed. then my brakes went completely out because of this. Thank god I made it home by the skin of my teeth. I called the dealership and they told me that these trucks have a lot of these problems so they came out with a knuckle kit which is a replacement of all the axles, spindles, bearings, etc (except hubs).. Now this kit is $700, which means that the truck isn't even worth that much or to put the money into it. Now why would they make a replacement kit if there was nothing wrong with them??? Obviously it is a manufacturing problem and they should be the one's responsible for fixing it because of the safety precautions. There is no type of recall on this what so ever.. I wish I knew what to do. I can't afford this but I am dumping $150 four times a year to temporarily fix this.. I hate this truck!!!

I purchased a 99 Kia Sportage in August of 07, the person I purchased it from must have been overjoyed to part with this POS. It was fine for the first couple of weeks, and then the Kia started to spit and sputter. The engine would surge at idle, and then act like it was going to stall. the engine light came on and stayed on. The starter was on its way out also, so I contact a local Kia dealership and scheduled a service repair for the starter and a diagnostic for the surging. I paid $75 for to diagnose the surging and they told me, they didn't know what was wrong. Winter came and it was time to use the 4WD, well of course now I know the hubs on these vehicles are worthless, this is known issue as well. I ended up replacing them with manual lock hubs.
Oh and by the way, my oil pan is seeping right through. The metal is rotten right through, just like the gas tanks do on these vehicles. As the winter progresses, I still have the spitting and sputtering until one day, the thing just stalls and won't start. I did some research and learned of the common ground issues people are having with these vehicles. In this case, the 15amp main fuse was blown, so I replaced it, thinking maybe it was a one time deal. This fuse has blown several times over the course of the winter.
This past Saturday, the car simply quit while I was going down the road with my three kids, in the middle of a blizzard. Even replacing the fuse did not work, as it kept blowing, so I had to jump it with a piece of wire. Today I called my local dealership again and they tell me I need to pay another $75 so they can run the diagnostic. I referred back to my last service call, where they found nothing was wrong, yet they charged me anyways. I explained that this is a known issue, as I can find many other postings about the ground issues and the stalling and blown fuses. They gave me the Kia customer care number, which I then called. I spoke with a customer care rep. at Kia named Randy at extension 45295. I was told they no nothing about this problem and that it was my responsibility to pay for any diagnostics or repair on the vehicle.
I explained how so many other people are having the same issues and they should come good for it. Randy was more than rude and told me the vehicle is out of warranty that was that. I don't know anything about it, but there should be a class action lawsuit against Kia Motors, they know these issues are present yet they refuse to do anything about it. My kids sat in a cold car, in the middle of a snow storm, while I rigged up a wire to jump the main fuse. If you dont want to risk your kid's lives, don't by a Kia, period. These vehicles are not safe, the company does not own up to its known issues and quite frankly, everyone I know would agree they are all junk. My brother in law just purchased an 07 Sephia, it has been at the dealership 7 times for various problems.

This can be dangerous when it stalls at times when I can not get over and off the road. My mechanic has looked at it and fixed several things but to no avail. The problem is intermittent but seems worse as the weather gets warmer. Who knows, just about the time I think I have a common denominator, it changes. At one time i thought it only happened when I had less than 1/2 tank of gas but now it happens when it is full. The check engine light comes on and goes off at will. My mechanic tells me that he could start changing things one at a time but that it might get pretty expensive and not do the job. There is no error message when he tests it. How can cars that stall in traffic randomly not be a safety issue that requires a safety recall. I have read many stories on this site about the same issue but not one that has had any solution. I think about selling it but how can I sell such a lemon to another human being and even if I did, I could not get enough money to purchase a replacement vehicle.

The first 2 times they claimed to have found the problem and I'm good to go. Now they can't duplicate the problem even after driving the piece-of-crap car for the weekend. I have picked up this car after they can't find anything wrong only to have it stall an hour later. The last visit I went almost a week with no problems. Now after stalling almost everyday this week, once 5 times in a day, it's back in the shop. And I'm willing to bet they will call me on Monday with didn't stall for us. This car is a danger to me and my family and I've been given no choice but to file a lemon law claim through the BBB.

I took it to Ford for service they informed me that it was still under factory warranty and sent me to Kia they fixed the whole thing for about 3,ooo dollars and it cost me nothing. They were kind enough to call me several times and send mail reminders about the different mileage checkups. They had a seatbelt latching problem and I received a recall notice from main Kia office. I have a 2000 Kia Sportage and the gas tank has to be replaced due to the leak mentioned as being investigated on this site. I have to pay for this expensive repair out of pocket.
My local Kia dealership sold 13 gas tanks in 2006 and 2 so far this year for the same problem. If they know about this, why is there not a recall? The tank, sending unit and fuel pump are all priced separately for a total of more than $800 excluding labor.
This is a very hazardous safety issue - one that you think would prompt QUICK action on the part of the manufacturer to avoid poor word of mouth advertisement not to mention human injury which cannot be measured in dollars and cents. You can be sure I will be going up the chain of command within Kia to get a satisfactory answer to this issue.

After several threats, they finaly aggreed to fix it, but they had to send it to another dealership a half hour away.
A month later I had my car back, with the same problem! I took it back to the people I bought it from and they said they wouldn't fix it because it was an unrelated problem. Several threats later they agreed to fix it again(after charging me another $165.00 for a diagnostic screening) So they sent it back to the other dealership. another month later I got my car back.
It appeared to work fine at first, then the check engine light came back on and it started dying even while going 70 MPH down the interstate. By this time 6 months had gone by since I bought it, so they told me they wouldn't fix it. And no threats have been able to sway them. I purchased a new Kia Sportage on 01/16/07. It was late on a Monday evening, so things were a little rushed.
The following day, which was a Tuesday, I took possession of the vehicle. On Wednesday I was looking over the contract and noticed that I was not given an additional $1000.00 discount that was negotiated in the price. I went back the same day and brought it to Bobby Harris's attention and was treated like some criminal. I explained that I only wanted what I was promised in the negotiating price.
I was told that I would have to speak to general manager Steve Harrell. I then went back on Saturday evening and spoke to another finance person who proceeded to inform me that Kia had already gotten credit approval and the loan was done deal and that I should have read the contract completely and it was my fault they had charged me $1000.00 more than I should have paid.
The general manager finally called me the following week and wanted me to explain to him my view on the matter. He simply stated that this was a fact finding mission and that he would call me the next day.
Well two days later he finally called and told me that he had decided, after reviewing all the information, that he would be unable to give me the $1000.00 that was mine to start with, but he was willing to give me $250.00 or would install a keyless entry on the Sportage as a good will gesture on his behalf. Another interesting fact is that when I returned on that Wednesday no one had business cards and Mike Tee, the sales rep., no longer worked there.
Sound strange to me. I told Steve Harrell, the general manager, that I would have no choice but to take his meager little pittance of $250.00, but I wouldn't go quitely. That is why I am posting this complaint in the hopes that no one will have to go through what I did.

I have just read dozens of these complaints and they all sound so similar to mine. I bought a new 2000 Kia sportage 4x4 in 2001 and drove off the lot with 12 miles on it. I guess I should have considered why it sat on the lot for so long! The first year was okay, just a lot of interior plastics falling off. I lost a door lock, both sun visor clips broke, two vent knobs and the bottom of the drink holder.
The next year I had to have the timing belt and exhaust system changed. It took them two tries to find the timing belt. The car would just not go anywhere. They told me it was fixed, but I had to bring it right back because it had a similar problem. I have changed the whole front end braking system three times in less than a year and a half. I have also experienced the problems of the HOLD light coming on, the dome light working only sometimes and the windows working occasionally. They absolutely will not work if i am driving over 50 mph! Currently I am dealing with the locks going crazy.
The anti-theft alarm goes off when I am in the car and driving! I called the dealership to get a quote because the warranty is out. The woman answering had zero patience with my question of cost. Her words were I can tell you it will cost at least $80 for just driving it in here and us not doing anything to fix it. I am also in the same boat as many Kia owners. They are worth so little that I am upside down with what I owe and can't get out with any kind of trade.

I bought a 1997 Kia Sportage from a family friend... and thought I was getting a good deal. I was wrong. Just before I bought it, they had put in a new transmission and reworked the top half of the engine. Now, the check engine light is always on, the airbag light comes on occasionally. I have gone through a started because the thing never wants to start. The car dies at random times, sometimes even on the freeway.
The power windows are agonizingly slow, the car revs when stopped seemingly at random, and the thing maxes out at about 65-70 miles per hour. Any faster than that and the engine is over 4000 rpms and sounds and feels awful. Gas mileage is that of a crappy SUV (seems befitting) and good luck at a shop because when you get one thing fixed, it breaks another. Never buy a Kia product! I wish I could just drive it into the ocean!

The Kia I purchased new in 1996 cannot pass emissions tests for the last 5 years because of a lack of computer sensors. This is not affecting all 1996 Kia Sportage's, only mine. The computer is not malfunctioning, it just never had the ability to monitor all the emission functions necessary.
This was not noted until years after purchase as Nevada requires cars older than 2 years to have a smog check. Kia dealerships state that there is no fix for this and this is a matter for the DMV. The DMV states just the opposite. I have been awaiting a fix for several years only to find that there is none.
Every years since approx 1998, I have to bring the car to the dealership for them to fail the test and obtain a waiver through the DMV. This year, Nevada DMV will not accept the waiver process anymore. I have a perfectly good car I cannot register in the state I purchased it in. I purchased my 99 Kia Sportage in November 2000. It was the worst decision of my life. The car only had 14,000 miles on it and only being about 2 years old I didn't think I would have to worry, but just in case I purchased the 'extra' warranty (because the 100,000 mile warranty is not transferable. I started having problems with it immediately. The brakes were squeaking so I had to have them replaced. The windows were not sealing properly so I had new stripping put on and it still did not fix the problem. I was told that they come in the bag all twisted so its nearly impossible to get them on properly where they actually seal. You call yourselves professionals? I was moving from WA to TX and drove my car. In southern CA, I stopped at a gas rest area and when I shut my car off it sounded like something exploded. When I tried to start it, it wouldn't start. So I was stuck in the middle of nowhere with a broken down vehicle.
Fortunately it only had 20,000 miles so it was under warranty. It took about 2 days but they said it was fixed. Since that break down I have taken it in about every 6 months because of it breaking down on me. It's always the same problem/complaint but some how they always come up with something different thats wrong with it. It usually costs between $200 and $1000 to fix and strangely even if I repair what they say is supposedly wrong with it I have the same problem the over the next few months. I recently had it towed to the dealership due to it breaking down AGAIN they said the problem was fixed and one week later I had to get it towed again. This time I pitched a fit and spoke with several managers.
After my car had been there for 3 days I was finally offered a loaner car. I spoke to the mechanic and he said he wasn't sure why it was doing what it was. He replaced a sensor that had been replaced a month earlier and told me that my temp. gauge was stuck and that none of the mechanics there could get in unstuck. Once again you call yourselves professional? I have had nothing but problems with this car since I bought it. I would rather take it to a field and set it on fire than I would continue to drive it.

As soon as I signed the papers for the 2001 Kia Sportage in March 2005, bad luck was ours. We walked out to the car, and as the salesman showed us how to open to trunk by pulling on the handle by the spare tire, it yanked off immediately. This has happened two more times after it was fixed. They were supposed to do a free safety inspection before we drove out of there or were supposed to offer to have us come back the next day for it. They didn't tell me this until when I drove it off the lot, the steering wheel was shaking, the tailpipe was banging against the ground, and both the backseat windows would not operate. I called that night and they said to bring it back in. I took it back the next morning, and they did fix them for free, because of the warranty. The night before, though, I freaked out, and I tried talking to the finance guy who officially sold us the car. I pleaded and pleaded with him to please take the car back. He said to call back and talk to the manager the next day.
I did and left messages. Never got a call back. I found out later they had no obligation to take it back, so I left it at that. A couple of months later, the car broke down on the highway as my sister was driving it. Over $200 was spent to have it repaired, not to mention the towing. (I do have the paperwork for all the repairs). A couple of months after that, the breaks were not working: the car would keep going much longer after it should have been. Once again, taking it to the dealership, the pads were worn down to NOTHING, and this is only a few months after getting it from the dealership. Are they ALLOWED to sell a car in such horrible condition? Apparently so. Are they not afraid they will be sued for killing someone? The electrical system is flawed. The driver's window stopped working and had to be fixed. The blinkers blink uncontrollably when turned on, but it's unpredictable when this will happen. The overhead light DOES NOT COME ON...ever.
The transmission has always been sticky. When speeding up and about a quarter to changing gears, the transmission makes a metallic sound and stops after I reach the next gear. The engine is very loud when speeding up and doesn't quiet until I'm in the lower speed of 3rd and 4th gear. The most annoying thing of late is how loose the belts have been getting. It is horrible. I've read that other people describe it as whistling. It began in August (2006) after I made a 3 hour trip to my grandparents' house. It was minor, but very noticeable, as it happened so suddenly. Now, it is so bad, I'm embarrassed to sit in traffic. I will turn up my CD player so I don't have to listen to it while driving. I do not know enough about cars to use correct terms, but I've driven enough cars and this one makes me the most nervous. Honestly, I feel like I'm driving a toy.

It has been a great car until the spring of 2005. When you are driving down a HWY doing 70mph the car will sometime jump like perhaps it was never shifted, however you have been in 5th gear the whole time. My husband said that it could not be the clutch, because they usually only act like that in 1st and 2nd gear. Then it started not starting. Now, my service engine soon light stays on continuously. It has been reset several times only to come back again. It has also developed a rough idle that nothing seems to cure. The spark plugs were changed as well as the wires. It is slightly better but not gone. This vehicle has also started to regurgitate fuel as I am filling up at the gas station. So, it takes me 25- 30 minutes to fill my tank from empty. After every gallon you put in you here a gurgle and it spits a pint back out at you. With today's gas prices, this is starting to cost a fortune.

We replaced spark plugs in September of 2005 and in January 2006 the service engine light came on and the hold light was flashing, so we took it to autozone and they tested codes on the vehicle and said cylinder three misfiring so we replaced the coils, and the other codes were for the ECM Engine Control Module and TCM Transmission Control Module.

So at that time I took it to a friend that is a mechanic and they said the rear wheel cylinders were not leaking and there was nothing wrong with the front brakes. The RPM's was going from 2000 to 4000 in 1st and 3rd gear and not shifting right. I am trying to fix the ECM and TCM myself but cannot find a repair manual for a kia anywhere and the dealership won't tell me where they go, not to mention occasionally the doors lock and unlock by themselves, the door chime dings every now and then when you turn left and the dome light comes on, the heat shield rattles, the chain in the 4 wheel drive rattles and we have repaired the four wheel drive twice, the muffler rattles, and there is a grinding noise in the front drivers wheel and we replaced wheel bearings on both sides on front to fix the grinding noise and it stopped for about a week but now it is back.

The windows stopped working at one point, the product of blown fuses, when the car was only two years old; the steering went out while driving with no warning, the result of a slipped belt, the mechanic told me later; the car has had non-stop problems with stalling, weird idle irregularities, and a "HOLD" light comes on for no reason. trul, my issues with this car are so numerous I can't list them all, but what I want to say is that this car is a DANGER and should be seriously investigated.

Since purchasing my 1999 Kia Sportage (NEW) I have had nothing but problems. The check engine light comes on constantly and constantly I take it back for them to fix "anything" to make it go out. It runs really rough and the rpm goes up to 2000!!! They keep it for a day sometimes more and most of the times they just "reset" the computer on the car because theycan't find anything wrong with it. They say anything can set it off and it could be just about anything. I'm just really getting tired oftaking it back in and not getting the problem fixed.
Now it's not under warranty and they won't even reset the computer because they say "it's not under warranty any longer". They suggest I disconnect the positive battery cable and leave it off for about 1 hour and it will reset itself. It does, but as soon as I get in the car and drive it less than 25 miles, it comes back on.

I purchased a new 2002 Kia Sportage. Within 10 months the bushings and tie-rods had to be replaced, two power stearing boxes were installed and then broke, the vehicle overheated 3 times, the CPU went out as "there were ants" in it; coil, ignition and spark plugs went, and the vehicle has never been able to be put into alignment. THIS IS A BRAND NEW CAR! I have been stranded by the roadside 6 times - once during a tornado. Kia Corporation doesn't seem to care. Obviously the KIA Sportage is a defective vehicle.
Damage Resulting: K(illed)I(n)A(ction).

This a REALSAFETY issue! I read all of the complaints regarding the KIA on your site. If you compile them all together you have a pretty accurate description of my nightmare with the vehicle I have been stuck with since 1997. You know, it's easier to get through a divorce than live with this KIA. The sales ad should read: For sale, Brand new KIA sportage ... will need transmission replaced in two months, expect engine light to appear continuously (troubleshooter: use tape to cover up the engine light on dash so as not to annoy you) ... visor to break off in approx. 6 months ... seatbelt problems, alignment problems, rust problems, comes with four wheels (but may fall off while driving), small problems with going out of control on fwy (but don't be alarmed, this is normal), shifting problems, do not be alarmed when your AIR BAG light activates it's just malfunctioning, and don't bother going to the dealer cause he can't help -- you're stuck with this lemon you fool!
I have spent thousands of dollars and thousands of hours f***ing around with this car. I have just been very fortunate not to have been injured or injured anyone with this car. It's too late to remedy this problem. Today I just barely made it home, it looks as though I will need a new engine at 97k ... what a suprise??? Buyer be REALLY aware and do your homework!

I am really wondering if the Kia dealerships are aware of this dangerous situation, but they don't do anything to remedy it. I have never had a vehicle do this. It could cost me a truckload of money for them to troubleshoot the problem, and MAYBE end the problem. This is my fear, as I bought the SUV used, to save money.
