Garmin makes good products. However I called the company to get an understanding of how the maps and map updates work and discovered their phone support is worse than some small businesses. The person I got was unprofessional, rude, did not know what he was talking about and also did not know how to communicate or answer questions logically. By the time I hung up I still did not know what Garmin's map update policies were. I will have to find out by talking to a third party. The person I talked to should be fired or at least placed in a different job within the company as they are unintelligent and lack the skills for answering phone calls.

I contacted customer service twice the past few days, once by chat the other by phone. Both time I was treated poorly. Neither rep I had contacted with listened to my issue. They were both condescending and rude. If possible avoid this company. There are other products that are just as good. And finally the service is very expensive. This wouldn’t be a problem if they had good customer service.

I have this issue: https://forums.garmin.com/apps-software/mobile-apps-web/f/garmin-connect-mobile-andriod/300472/oops-looks-like-there-was-a-problem-trying-to-save-this-course-please-try-again. I can successfully import a GPX file created by Gaia GPS into the Connect software on my Android phone, and I see everything in connect, the course map, the elevation profile, everything, but it will not save it after importing it, giving the error message above shown in the link above.
Customer service wasn't interested in me simply emailing them the file to try it for themselves. It would have taken 30 seconds or less to try it on their phone. They just told me if I use a GPX file made by a 3rd party app I am on my own, and I should try importing it on a PC because that might work. Who is going to carry a PC while backpacking through the countryside, which is what I am doing now? Totally ridiculous. Insane.

I purchased the watch in the fall of 2020 and I love it. However... after about a year of wearing the watch I noticed that the thumb side of my wrist starting to itch and turn red. I took the watch off and cleaned it with soap and a soft toothbrush then put it back on. The itching got worse and my wrist started to look and feel blistered. I cleaned the watch again with alcohol, then peroxide, then vinegar. No change. Blistering got worse, I stopped wearing lotion and body oil. No change. So I finally just stopped wearing the watch.
I reached out to Garmin online and was told to contact customer service via telephone. I did so. Spoke to a very nice gal, Sierra, who took my information and sent me to another customer service agent, Debbie, who I can only assume offices in the bowels of the Garmin headquarters far below the sunshine. Debbie asks me to send pics of my wrist and the watch to her. I complied... and wouldn't you know it, all this is my fault! The part of the band that I told Debbie looks like a coating had worn off was actually "residue" to her discerning customer service eyes. And as it turns out, I was wearing the watch incorrectly!
She so observantly pointed out to me that it was clear I was wearing the watch too tightly as you could see the indentions on my wrist..... having not worn the watch for several days I was surprised to hear this but, she's the professional, yes? After listening to Debbie explain to me how to properly wear and clean the watch as if I were a toddler with an expensive toy, I asked her to forgo the remainder of her well rehearsed lecture and just let me know If this was something she was going to be able to help me with or not.
It was then that Debbie told me that despite my complete incompetence she would benevolently send me another watch band, along with another copy of the care instructions that I followed the first time. Of note: I had the feeling Debbie had taken a call like mine before so I asked her "I'm guessing you guys have had this issue before", to which she sardonically replied "yes.". Comforting to know I'm not the only schlemiel out here trying to navigate the intricacies of the modern wristwatch.

So I had a Vivosmart 4, which I used 24/7 as fitness and general health tracker. Sadly, the wristband broke a couple of weeks after the warranty expired. I tried to glue it back together with superglue, but didn't work with the silicon material. So I contacted Garmin, asking if they had any advice on how to fix it. The very next day, in reply they issued a return order asking me to send in the device. I did - and again the very next day I got a notification that a replacement was on its way! It arrived within a day, brand new and for free. Not only am I super happy to be able to track my steps again, but also massively impressed by the over-and-above customer-friendly service. Thank you so much, Garmin!

Purchased a Garmin from one of their resellers. Watch out for Garmin stuffing the sales channel with discontinued products sold as new. I purchased an Oregon that stopped operating at advertised temps when hiking a 14er. Not a good place to be. No one backed a replacement with a new unit since the return policy is so short and since it was discontinued. Garmin is crap and so are resellers.

I have multiple Garmin auto GPS units. I had a problem before on an earlier device and they said they could not fix it. Now I have another of the higher-end GPSs that will not work with the supplied cord and they said they cannot fix it and I have to buy a new one. The 'discounted' price they offered me was more than it was available for on Amazon. I am done with Garmin and do not recommend them to anyone. You are better off just using map apps on your phone.

My Garmin auto navigation device stopped holding a charge so it cannot operate when not attached to a power source (which was a excellent feature). When I called Garmin the customer service rep said that when the device gets to be several years old, that is what happens. I asked if there was a replacement service because when you purchase a Garmin device, there is no warning on the package that the device will be worthless after several years. After a lot of back and forth where he tried many ways to "double-speak" this built in manufacturing failure, he finally said I could exchange it for another Garmin device with a 30% credit. Obviously I am not going to spend any more $$$ on a Garmin device, I now have an unattractive paperweight. Fair warning to other potential buyers: you spending money on a device which is built to fail after a few years.

I have been working with Garmin technical support for my Garmin 2699 auto GPS. Garmin updated the software to Ver 8.80 plus the maps. They created a problem by queuing the wrong maps for United States. The 2nd map file was incorrect and disabled the voice command function. Initial problem reported on Apr 11 None to the Garmin support persons ever checked the web site for correct files. After 6 times downloading the maps, I contacted chat and was put in contact with a (?) Garmin support person who would not work on my Garmin problem until he installed Norton swr and Malware swr which he invoiced for $400.00. He did not fix the Garmin problem. A 2nd Tech finally called me and loaded the correct maps into the 2699 that fixed the problem. He insisted I pay the $400.00 which was a scam! Turns out both tech were from USA Mart LLC out of Muncie, IND. This a SWR SCAM site.

Hi, 3 months ago I had a problem with my Garmin Fenix 5 Plus Sapphire Titanium. The problems occurred in reading GPS, maps and pace. In October I reported this problems to Garmin Customer Service. An adviser informed me that I have to wait two months because my watch model was out of stock. After two months nobody contact with me about my case. When I called to the Garmin I heard standard apologies. They informed me that they still haven’t my watch in stock to replace my one which I sent them a while ago. I asked them to do something with it as I need my watch to my running. Even I agreed to replace for cheaper version 5 X Plus. An adviser which I spoken with said that they have in stock and will send it next day. I was asking couple of times is it will be definitely 5 X Plus model and he every time confirmed it. Unfortunately they sent me the cheapest version this watch 5 Plus and I felt cheated and upset.
Straight away I called to the Customer Service and adviser after speaking with manager said that they will check my conversation to check that I was right and their agent cheated me. Up today nobody contact with me about that they only exchanged me the watch for this which I agreed (5 X Plus). After 3 weeks of using this watch I can see the problem with elevation and pace. Each time I am starting my run from the same place but watch is showing different data. I have called today to the Garmin Customer Service and explain whole situation and that they sent me the watch which from the beginning showing wrong data. Obviously from the beginning they ask me to follow the instructions, switch on and off etc.
I have spoken with adviser called Reece and it was the same when I called last month to discuss my complaint that I was cheated by his friend. The same one who assured me that they will listen the tapes from my conversation about the watch model which I choose to exchange so I asked him did they check it. He said that because they sent me the right watch they close this case!!! For me this case wasn’t finished as someone lied me and he should bear the consequences for it! I asked him to transfer me to the complaint department because I want to get some explanation and resolve that problem. Reece didn’t want to do it and from tone of his voice I felt like he is angry on me. I feel that I was scammed by his friend and he tried to do everything to sweep this under the carpet but I will not leave it like that.
From 3 months I am without the proper working watch and without resolving the problem that I was tricked by an adviser. I feel that they don’t bother about my case because I’m not British Citizen and my English is not fluent but I’m not giving up because if I am spending lots of money for good and branded products I have right to be served and get what I paying for. Now I am waiting for response from Garmin and will update you with it. I just have to warn you to double think before buying so expensive product because soon when it won’t be working properly you will have to fight with their Customers Service and they just wanted to get rid of you not to help you.

My level of frustration with Garmin is increasing and since their help is closed on Saturday it gives me time to share my thoughts. I have a Garmin GPS map 66st for over a year. When I received my first device I could connect it neither to a computer or to a smartphone in spite of hours spent on the phone. Garmin replaced the device and same problem. I have tried deleting my account and recreating it, starting from scratch. Nothing. When I plug it into a computer it flashes "downloading waypoints" and then turns the device off. Garmin express will not recognize the device. When I attempt to pair it with my iPhone also it starts including providing a pairing code and then fails. Of course no information on any of these failure modes on any support site I can find. Most suspiciously GPSMap 66st is not even on the list of selectable devices. Is there a fundamental issue that Garmin will not recognize. This is most disappointing! Please advise.

The Garmin Vivoactive 3 is a product with lots of promises as a training tool but that delivers on almost none of them. Heart rate measurement accuracy is on par with most wrist-worn devices, which is to say unreliable inconsistent. The GPS works ok, but that's because GPS is good technology, not because of the quality of the device. But where this thing becomes less than useless is in some of the functions that anyone trying to train needs to rely on. Particularly bad are the manual lap function, altimeter, and intensity measurement. This is the second one of these I've had, having returned the defective first one. Maybe they are all defective. I've spent hours online with Garmin reps, resetting this and that, to lose all my carefully chosen settings each time, only to have the thing keep failing to perform its advertised functions.
The manual lap function is a farce. You're supposed to be able to start a new lap by double-tapping the screen during an activity. Forget it. It may work the first or tenth time you try it but will probably take 50-80 tries to work, meanwhile your lap is long since over and, if you're on a bike, by that time you've probably run into a road sign or oncoming traffic trying to get the thing to respond. It works, but in the same way that guessing someone's age by picking random numbers from 1-100 does. Less than useless and, in fact, dangerous.
The altimeter is a joke. Keeping the little port clean makes no difference in its accuracy. It's sometimes correct (like a stopped clock is correct twice a day) but usually off by a couple hundred feet. Looking at the graphs of bike rides I find that every one has sudden vertical ascents or descents of hundreds of feet, adding hundreds, even thousands of “ghost” feet of elevation to the data. There's nothing like struggling up a climb while watching your altimeter going slowly downward to compensate for this “oops” feature, which happens several times on every ride. Worse than no data at all. Also, I was surprised to find that I seemed to be climbing hundreds of floors when no such thing was happening because it uses the altimeter for that calculation.
The intensity minutes is another hoax. During one period, it routinely failed to register any intensity minutes at all from hard workouts that should have yielded a lot of them (yes I have it set correctly to HR zones and so forth) and now gives me thousands per week even if I've been sitting around all day. Again, worse than no data at all. It should be able to do simple arithmetic (add the “moderate” minutes and 2x the “intense” minutes together and get a sum) but can't do this simple calculation for some reason. In over 100 intense activities this feature has not been accurate a single time. This week, for instance, it's given me 1677 intensity minutes so far and this has been a week where I've hardly done any training at all. It should be in the neighborhood of 100 or so.
There are other bogus features on this thing and, based on how inaccurate the important ones are, I wouldn't trust any of them. In any event, the ones I need for any kind of intentional training are unreliable (except that they're reliably so). Still, you can put different watch faces on it so you can see things like weather info at a glance. But that's not what one buys this thing for.
It keeps time about as well as a digital watch from 1975 would, so if you're timing something like how long to water a tree, say, you're probably ok. It seems to know when I went to bed and got up, too, but I already know that, too, so no bonus points there. I know it's an inexpensive model but it uses much the same tech as Garmin's more expensive models, so if you're thinking about getting a Garmin fitness watch, I'd look elsewhere.

I bought a Garmin Nuvi GPS for my car ten years ago before they were so common in cars, and it still works great. I have owned an Vivosmart HR watch for 4-5 years for swimming and tracking other fitness items. Recently, after I thought the HR battery had given out, I bought another Garmin watch that wasn't quite as easy to program as what I needed. Garmin not only took the new watch back 3 weeks after I got it - no questions asked - but their customer service agent helped me troubleshoot the battery issue with the 4-5 year old watch. They had a great attitude and were super helpful. They said, "If it doesn't adequately improve the battery life, you can have it replaced with us." The cost estimate for the replacement was only 25% the cost of the watch when it was new. Great products. Great service. Very fair prices. Hard to ask for more in a company.

Garmin fenix 3 HR. Paid over $500. In little over a year started having software issues. It’s out of warranty. To replace for refurbished is $130.00 plus tax. Meaning I will have refurbished watch and it would cost me more than $600. It’s ridiculous. Customer service not willing to work something out and help. So in plain words. In approximately year and half I supposed to spend $650.00 dollars to have refurbished Garmin fenix 3 watch. For this price they should give better warranties of have some better replacements options. Now you can find this watch online for $320 brand new. During the 1 year warranty, Garmin watch worked just fine. I found it to be reliable and worth the price. However, shortly after the warranty expires, the heart rate monitor stopped working and the battery began to discharge rapidly. I research the issue and learned that these are defects common to Garmin products that have been widely reported for years and unresolved. I wasted many hours attempting to fix a problem and consultation with garmin that ultimately could not be fixed other than by getting replacement watch. When I contacted customer service to request support, they immediately asked me to send $160 for a refurbished replacement and a 90 day warranty.
I would not mind paying for out of warranty service, except that this is a defective product and rather than admit the defect, Garman seeks to charge its customers to replace the watch. I protested lovely enough and eventually got my issue addressed, but it bothers me that a customer paying $800 for a watch should have to go through such a hassle to get an appropriate response. Driving on a 9000 km road trip across Canada and the USA. My Original Nuvi lost its mind about halfway through, so I purchased a new Garmin Drivesmart 61. First thoughts were it had a better bigger touchscreen. Minus was they took away the calculator for some reason. Didn't take long or it to be apparent that this was a poor successor to the Nuvi. It was very slow, and often changed its mind. I would tell you to go to and intersection and turn right, then usually after you had moved over 4 lanes of traffic to do that it would tell you to turn left. It seemed to pick the longest routes possible. (Maybe it was meant for a cab?)
One morning as we approached a main road it told us to turn left. The problem was I could see the desired freeway entrance about 100 yards to the right. The accuracy is no longer anything to brag about. Something like 15m. Most times that would put the turn about 5m past the intersection. This unit was so bad we finally put it away and used maps. Yes, real AAA maps... Much better results.
Final insult when we got home, I tried to update the maps via wired laptop connection because I did not know how long the battery life was. Apparently I got scammed by a very legitimate looking site that had a tech contact me via phone and took over my computer. The guy tried a little too hard to convince me that everything was on the up and up. Then he flashed a DOS screen that showed how many of my drivers were turned off. So many that my laptop should not even been working.
For a fee he could download some software that would fix everything. He also mentioned Maps should be updated every 6 months. Uh Huh, so when I took over control and started to do a live scan he very quickly found a reason to hang up. This is crap. Garmin has to be aware of this scam, and they need to do something about it. What a shame Garmin has fallen so far. When I was an aircraft instrument tech, Garmin was the ONLY brand pilots would use. I feel I have been sold an overpriced, poorly supported piece of junk and intend to take it back for a refund.

My 2555LMT nüvi is crapping out. So I needed to verify the GPS issue of a partial screen blackout was a hardware problem, forcing me to buy a new device, or go with my mobile phone. Garmin offered me a discount on a new device, which I took as a replacement for my Nuvi 2555. Made my order and received an order confirmation promptly. Then trouble began.
Garmin messed up my billing address, apparently not using the information I supplied on my order. If credit card address does not match billing address, typically the order is cancelled or at minimum, delayed. I followed online directions to change or cancel my order. BUT, the steps I followed led me to a customer support page. I followed a different set of steps to correct my order address problem. I found my path to get customer support stymied by the endless loop I found myself in. Each answer led me back to same initial page and round and round I went trying to figure out how to reach customer support to change my billing address. The "chat line" was booked up and wait time for a response was hours, up to two days!
Email submissions would be responded to in 5 to 8 working days! So, I had to call device support again. My wait time was @ 15 minutes. Once I was on the phone with customer support, it took another 55 minutes to have the support guy to find the order, cancel my first order, and then create a 2nd order with the corrected billing address. My "support" couldn't make any alterations/corrections to my pending order. He couldn't utilize any part of my account info on the new order, so I had to provide shipping and payment info, again. Over 1.5 hours of my time trying to order a new device (which I might not even need if I chose to use my mobile phone (Lack of coverage in remote areas is my main concern with relying on my phone). After today's experience I can understand why Garmin devices business is crashing. Improvements are needed quickly if Garmin plans to compete with mobile phones and other competitors. KM from NC.

I have two vehicles, one has a TomTom GPS, the other has a Garmin. The TomTom is entirely logically laid out. When you want to go somewhere, you start typing the town or city, type-ahead starts narrowing down possibilities. You pick your town, then it presents you with the streets. It has removed all streets not in that town, so when you start typing the name of the street, it instantly proposes you the one you want. Then street address and GO. Easy.
The Garmin is designed backwards for an unknown reason. Instead of asking the name of the town, it starts off asking for the street address. That means it cannot narrow down the list of streets. So then you put in the street name, and it goes off and starts a search in Ontario, Quebec, and New York. It does not ask you for the name of the town. It comes back with hundreds of hits in no discernible order. The top one is 467 KM away, the next one is 231. The third one is 420 KM away, they aren't even sorted by distance. The one I want, which is only 80 KM from where I am, is nowhere to be found.
Then there is the problem of actual places. On the TomTom, if I want to drive to McNabb Arena, I type "McNabb Arena". It finds it and takes me directly there. The Garmin searches in Ontario, Quebec, and NY and comes back empty. Or the best one, I needed to pick up my father at the Ottawa Bus Terminal, so I type in "Ottawa Bus" on the TomTom, and boom, the terminal is the top hit. On the Garmin? It suggests "Ottawa Business Center" as the only hit. So I try "Ottawa Bus Terminal", no hits, "Bus", many hits but all pertaining to Business, etc. Finally I just ended up using my phone. I have endless anecdotes about the Garmin's inability to get me anywhere, but suffice it to say that it is next to useless as a GPS.

I owned 4 GPS, all Garmins as of now. The processor are incredibly slow, Garmin won't list the processor speed on any of their models. When you make a turn the graphics are lagging beyond, calculations are extremely slow. If you pass the address accidentally Garmin don't do street U turns rather takes you around a whole block to bring you back. Many times it will given me the long routs even if you have a lot shorter option. Even as Garmin claim it not any of my GPS ever remembered the roads I take. I have to override the suggested plan. I have turned off the voice guide altogether. It is very very annoying. Just like a Papagayo. keep on repeating where to turn twice in the row, and once minutes before. If you miss spell the word/address there is no suggestions something close to your spelling.
I have to Google for it. Need a direct shortcut button otherwise at times you need to push the back button 4 times before you can get back to the map. The turn arrow can be quiet confusing at times actually when streets are close to each other or on the freeway with a 4 way intersection. Maybe if I use the voice navigator would be better not sure. The first Garmin I had was in 2007. I am a professional in the service business so I use it all the time. I would love to dump it but I can't anything better... SAD! Bought a Garmin 2559 in Summer of 2017 for its European maps. Worked fine. Planned to use it again in 2018 but it died completely a few days before departure. Replaced it quickly with a Drive 50LMT, as I was leaving for rural France in a few days and needed a GPS. Thought that the "lifetime maps", which Garmin promotes with its products, meant I could add my European maps from the 2559 (which was very expensive because of all the maps in it) to my new device. Nope. "Lifetime" = lifetime of the device. New device = buy same maps purchased a year ago... again. $139 CAD for Europe. Expect adventures with those "updated" maps.
In Europe, I ended up in a field that Garmin was indicating as a road. Elsewhere I was directed to make a left turn onto a highway through a FENCE. (The road was actually a dead end and had clearly been so for a very long time). The "updated" (several days before travel) maps were out of date or flat out wrong. Speed limits were wrong. France widely announced (well ahead of July 1, 2018) that 90 kph roads were being universally reduced to 80 kph but the Garmin still had them at 90 kph in an "update" uploaded a few days before the national speed reductions. Garmin Drive 50LMT was completely unable to find any street addresses. Only towns. From there, I had to use my phone. (I highly recommend Navmii. It's a free app & doesn't need data use. You can use it with your phone in airplane mode.)
The window-mount suction cup constantly dislodged WHILE driving, which was extremely dangerous and terrifying in the middle of complex roundabouts in the heavy traffic of bigger cities. It came off 23 times in one day. Got home and contacted Garmin. First they wanted to know specifically where the map errors were. (I sent them photos of the fence blocking the road etc). Excuse me, *I* don't work for Garmin, doing field research for the team. I was busy trying to figure out how to get where I needed to be from a field full of hay bales, and didn't think to take location coordinates to pass on to Garmin later.
Customer service suggested that I should have updated my maps again a week or so later - while travelling in rural France with limited wifi -because I should have magically known that yet another map update became available after I arrived in France. Yeah, ok I can see how that was completely my fault, Garmin. Then customer service told me that it's all my fault that the street addresses couldn't be found by the device, because I didn't look up addresses the "right way" (apparently). Just as I did successfully with my previous Garmin GPS, I'd typed the address into the search window (with the magnifying glass icon and keyboard to spell it out) expecting to have the Garmin search for it. Customer service tells me that's not how one is supposed to search for specific addresses. I can't imagine why I thought it was.
Garmin has gotten their last money from me. In future, I'll use my phone with the free Navmii app, which had no trouble finding anything. The Navmii maps are completely accurate and up to date. If Garmin can be outdone by a free smartphone app that doesn't require using cell phone data, and when Garmin customer service takes a "blame the customer" approach to it's overpriced, poor-quality product, company longevity is not in the cards.

WORST EXPERIENCE. GARMIN DOES NOT STAND BEHIND ITS PRODUCTS. Bought the device 2 years ago, signed up for a plan, used it in the woods and it was just okay. Intermittent text access was better than none. Heading out to a new adventure a few weeks ago and signed up to a new premium "freedom" plan (very expensive -- $25 annual fee and $65/month). I follow the instructions and receive the "activation confirmation" screen on the device. I repeated the process twice and both times received confirmation of activation. Good to go, right? Wrong. I get out on the trail, and nothing works. NOTHING. Zero email, zero text messaging, zero. And it was almost a disaster because we have a medical emergency requiring helicopter extraction, and luckily we have a backup Satellite Phone to use. The Garmin was USELESS.
Come back and call customer support. They send me to tech support to figure out why it wasn't working. It takes them an hour to discover the problem -- there was apparently a firmware update that needed to be installed, which of course the device said nothing about. Then he tells me that he wants to walk me through synching the device to computer, but acknowledges that he has no idea why it isn't working as we try over the course of the next 30 minutes. Exasperated, the Tech suggests I get a new device (!) but then he learns that I won't have another trip for another year, so tells me to go back to customer support to just get a refund of the $25 annual fee and the $65 monthly fee. It's like $95 including taxes. Then I can maybe send in the device to see if they can figure it out in the meantime. So it's annoying and a waste of too much time, but I agree to the plan.
Then I get back to customer service to tell them the plan and get my refund. (I tell him that's the least they can do, since I had really needed to have text communication in the woods and didn't have it. (Thank God we had the Sat Phone.) Now for the fun part: Garmin Customer Support says that they WON'T ISSUE A REFUND! Even though the device worked NOT AT ALL for the entire trip. Why? They said I should have taken the initiative to visit the website to see if a firmware update was needed before using it again! Isn't that the kind of update that you would think they would push to a device, rather than rely on users to constantly check a firmware website???? Or maybe send an email to us about, so we would have a fair chance to get the apparently critical update? And what would it have cost Garmin to apologize for my inconvenience and simply give me a refund -- a lousy $95!
I have tons of Garmin gear -- watches, monitors, navigation devices -- and they have totally alienated this customer for life. What a shame. I escalated this to more senior people in Garmin Customer Support -- same response: "device was within functioning parameters and needed to be updated. Service is non-refundable at time of activation." -- Anthony **, Billing Rep I, Garmin International, Phone: (800) 511-2459
I'm sure there are smart and capable people at Garmin who can understand how absurd this situation is, but that intelligence has not made it to their customer support team, which is their customer-facing group. This kind of thing is toxic with consumers. Sell them something that doesn't work, and then blame the frustrated customer for the failure, saying it was caused by not doing something they were never told to do (search firmware updates). Well done, Garmin. I hope you have a lot of other customers who don't care about customer service. I, for one, will never buy another one of your products.

I find that Garmin is completely reliable. It's very easy to maneuver from one selection to another. I found traffic conditions alerts to be very helpful when traveling. The screen size has gotten bigger recently which really helps. It's very easy to read without jeopardizing safety. But it takes a long time to update the maps and it only covers a certain portion of the United States. The memory could be expanded. But it's a good product at a fair price.

The device works well most of the time; however, their big sales pitch is "Lifetime Renewable Maps." This is a fantastic lie at best. The first time I tried to renew they said the device didn't have enough memory to renew and I needed to upgrade the memory for some fee. So, they are providing a device with renewable maps, but conveniently don't provide enough memory for the future to do that - what? So, then I try to renew at a later time and they tell me my computer is screwed up. It works perfectly, has all the security systems in place, never been hacked and as I say works perfectly for all other applications.
So, next they have me call some company in California called Easysoft (never told me it was an outside company). They say my computer is messed up and want $65 to repair. They won't take a credit card but want to copy a bank check and are asking me for personal banking information. Then the operator says they need another $5 for California sales tax even though I live in PA. The thing is a complete scam and I will never ever by Garmin products again. Don't buy their crap!!

When doing research to decide what brand GPS to purchase, Garmin was consistently ranked higher than any other. They are a well respected and trusted company. I ordered a Garmin GPS on Amazon during a "deal of the day" event several years ago. I specifically wanted a system that came with a lifetime map update feature, so I waited until the opportunity came up. It was a very positive experience and exactly as expected. The only problem I had with my GPS was that it sometimes took quite a while to access the satellites for positioning. It was annoying at times if I was out of town in an unfamiliar place. I would have to stop and wait in a random parking lot while the system acquired the satellites.

I bought Garmin from Best Buy in the store. It was amazing, quick and easy. No problems to purchasing it. Customer service was great. The employee was able to help me pick out what would be best for my needs. I liked the Map Updates, Built-In Bluetooth-equipped phone to voice-activate the GPS through the built-in microphone and speaker for safe, hands-free navigation. It also had Traffic Updates and a high-resolution touch-screen display reveals preloaded, detailed street maps of North America. Some features can be a little hard to understand on how to set up so it would be nice to have better instructions. Moreover, features that will be able to know if there has been an accident so you can detour. Other than that I think everything is great.

I purchased my old unit in a retail store a few years ago. The salesperson was helpful in finding a unit that fit my needs and helped explain how the different units worked and their various features. I like Garmin because they have a quality product. They help people get around without having to use a paper map. The units are modern looking and can come with accessories to attach them to your dashboard. The software always had updates for the maps. They are so prevalent that my elderly father calls all GPS units or software "a Garmin".
However, they are a bit antiquated. Garmin aren't really used anymore because everyone has GPS on their phones. They have up to date maps, but its easier to just use an app on your phone. My father had trouble getting the most recent maps and actually got lost because of that. It would be nice if they updated immediately. The devices can be rather chunky, too. Most new vehicles come with GPS installed in the dash, so you wouldn't need an independent device outside of the dash.

Store/site is easy to navigate. Prices are much better than getting from a dealer or accessory shop. I prefer to buy my own part/accessory, then take it to mechanic and have a repair done that way. Customer service is great. Always willing to help and make suggestions. There is a great selection of whatever you might need, and if they don't have it right then, it's usually the next day or they can check with other locations to get what you need quickly. There is one guy that helps my elderly mother all the time with her aging Lumina. He always goes above and beyond. At times, there isn't anyone extra around, a lot of times, you have an associates pulled outside to investigate, which is greatly appreciated, but can bog down the buying process if there isn't another person there to help at the counter. It would be nice to have a part time person to come in at peak hours to assist.

It has been many years since I purchased an navigator from Garmin, but I loved it. I purchased it from Best Buy and the experience was fine. It was new technology but it was easy to understand. I believe the reason I replaced it was due to the maps expiring. I find it rather odd that it costs more to update the maps on a navigator than it does to just replace it. I couldn't pin point exactly what I'm looking for due to the wide selection of products and services that are offered. Their customer service is usually very good. There's only been a few times when I was unable to get help quickly but that's normal across the board, in my opinion at least.
The only thing that I would improve about them is sometimes it's hard to find exactly what you're looking for. There's been a few times that I've bought the wrong thing and then I had to go through the whole return process which isn't very much fun. I purchased this item (Garmin Nuvi 2559LMT) to drive in Greece where I cannot read the streets signs in their alphabet. I knew that there was a time period before I could purchase a SIM card and use Google maps. I had to drive from the airport to a seaside town where I would be working at a refugee camp. I ordered this item from Amazon because my local stores did not carry the Europe maps which I needed. When I arrived in Athens, I discovered that the Nuvi did not recognize addresses. I needed to go to a specific hotel, at a specific address in a specific town. I found this pattern consistent, every time I tried to use it. Once I had a SIM card, I used Google maps which recognized all of the addresses.
In the beginning, I had to do workarounds, getting to a town and then asking people for directions. I had done that the year before at night which was a safety issue for me and I purchased the Nuvi to keep me safe. As a side note, the screen also froze and I would have to turn it off, reboot, to get the screen to clear. After two months, I returned to the US. I contacted Amazon for a return and they told me I had to contact Garmin since the box had been opened and it was beyond 30 days. I then contacted Garmin who said I had to return it to the place of purchase and they could not help me except to troubleshoot the problem (addresses in Greece). They assured me that all of the addresses were there and it worked fine in Europe. Not true.
I then recontacted Amazon and they agreed to refund the costs since I had contacted Garmin and they would not help. No one should buy this product for travel in Europe. I have had a US Garmin for years and it has worked fine. A few glitches on streets but overall great. I was excited to rely on the European version where it is not always possible to have a SIM card which are rarely sold at airports. It failed to do the job it was supposed to do. It should be taken off the market.

I purchased my Garmin 5S at the end of April. Since purchasing I have had nothing but problems with it. I understand that every device is not always going to be perfect. However, trying to get Garmin Product Support to help you is extremely difficult. They say you will have a response within 24 hours, but responses either do not come at all, or can take up to a week. My watch needs to be sent back, due to no fault of my own. (It has stopped connecting to my phone and the app and the functions no longer work.) The email I received to send it back was generic instructions across all Garmin products. It took almost a week for me to get the information, not I will need to wait a week to hear back on the clarification I need.
Aside from this, I am responsible for paying the shipping to send it back to them. I find this absolutely ridiculous since it is their watch's faultiness causing it to need to go back. I would prefer it would have just worked correctly from the beginning. It is also going to take up to 10 business days for me to receive it back. Based on the false timeline they give for product support responses, I am guessing it will be over a month until I get it back. I spent over $600 on this watch and have not been able to use it correctly because of the malfunctions associated with it. Now I am going to have to pay to send it back and wait even longer for it to be fixed before I can use it again. Dealing with Garmin has been worse than dealing with any budget airlines, or cable providers.

Purchasing was easy. I went straight to the store clerk and told them what I needed and what year, model and make of car I had, and within minutes they were able to find that product in store. If they didn't have it (which only happened once), they'd offer to order it for me and have it available for me within the next few days. I've only ever ordered in the store. Also, I especially appreciated that they would read the error messages coming from my car's system, provide a printout of what they were, and make recommendations based on those errors in order to fix them. The best part was that this service was free, and it helped tremendously not have to take it into the shop which could be backed up for days or could keep my vehicle off use for hours while they looked into this sort of thing for me.
There have been a few occasions where the employees have not been properly trained or simply were not helpful. I own a Garmin GPS and I like it better than Tom. I used it quite often on road trips and travelling out of the country. The thing I don't like about is that it gives you the long route. Regardless if you check the short route, avoid back roads, toll roads and bridges, it still gives long directions that still include side streets. The cellphone GPS does the same thing. I think there should be update that includes taking the highway without telling you to get off at every off ramp. I feel as though I were taking the bus at the bus depot.
I bought my first GPS online and my second GPS was purchased in person at Wal-mart. It was annoying to have to connect to a computer just to get an update for maps. Not everyone has access to a computer. There should also be a handicap friendly icon to give us all facilities equipped to handle any or some accessibility in restaurants, banks, stores, and other establishments. I have to look very hard for the handicap sign everywhere I go. The app should offer this extra service so we don't have to be looking away while driving.
Also, the prices are getting ridiculously high for just 1 feature added from the prior version. If Garmin & Tom offer another advanced equipment it should offer a bigger selection of improvements for such a price difference.

I went to Best Buy and purchased the product but I had done my research online before. After reading product descriptions and how people viewed them, it was easy to pick this system. The company is very professional and their equipment works well. If I were to change one thing it would just be that the GPS was able to give me alternate routes based on live traffic.

I dislike that the the device can be transferred to multiple vehicles and saves old trips. Product could be cheaper. There are comparable apps to download on my phone. I also don't like that it has a battery, but I like that it makes trips easy. I don't have to preplan other than the time needed. I can usually find anything without much trouble. I bought Garmin at the store. They had a wide selection of different GPS systems and the employees there were very helpful giving me advice on which one to choose. However, there was a problem with the input cable when I bought it so I went to the store and they replaced it right away. The base of the GPS is not as heavy as I would like to be because it tends to move around on the dashboard when in motion so I have to put some tape on the bottom to prevent it from sliding but I really like the size of the GPS display and the picture clarity. The audible tones are easy to hear and the button are comfortable to use. The navigation updates very frequently so there is no delay when driving.

I bought my Garmin GPS from a Target near me. Choosing the right model and service was not hard. I like Garmin for its dependability and accuracy for navigation, as well as compatibility with my vehicle. It is easy to set up and very easy to use, even for my not tech-savvy parents. However, it is becoming rather redundant to have navigation using the Garmin service when I can just as easily use Google maps. I don't see the use of having another external component to clutter my car and that needs constant charging when I have all the capabilities in my phone. Overall, clear packaging and reasonable prices made the experience smooth.

I have had to pursue someone either online or over the phone for any in depth help with any issues. I felt that there was too much time wasted with the customer service rep trying to find the answers and information that was needed to get my items up and running efficiently and correctly.
The employees were extremely helpful however, very kind and again accommodating. Most likely in the coming future I would probably make any future purchases online as to avoid the go between person. My experience in the past has led me to believe that it is always much better to do business directly with the company. Overall, great quality merchandise, reasonably priced and extensive selection covering several categories of interest. Easy to use website with extensive details on items, prices and availability. We have a Garmin GPS and I love it. We did a lot of research online and by talking to friends before we purchased, then called the company to order. The representative was friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. The device is easy to use and has never gotten us lost. The fact that it didn’t break the bank is points in its favor as well but I don’t like the fact that it came with a limited number of maps and if you need others you have to pay for them. Does not hold charge. Will not work unless plugged in. But I had heard good things about this company from friends. I purchased the product in store. Decided to try after my TomTom went missing. I also have an eTrex Vista HCx that's also not detected by my PC --- so now I can't do any updates on IT, either! Garmin warranty is worthless. I purchased the NUVI 2589LMT in August of 2016. I purchased this unit solely because of it's extra features. No complaints about how the unit worked. It did it's job very well. Last week while traveling I used the unit to find local restaurants while I sitting in a parking lot when we spotted a Golden Corral close by. I put the unit back in the center console where I normally kept it when not in use. After eating my grandson wanted to go to the Dunkin Donut close by. When we arrive there the Dunkin Donut was closed.
I retrieved the GPS out of the console to search for another Dunkin Donut. When I cut the GPS on the arrow on the map kept moving around on the screen and the GPS would not respond to my touch. I handed the GPS to my wife sitting in the back seat and she discovered that the screen on the GPS was cracked, when she told me that I automatically knew that cracked screen interrupted the touch feature of unit.
After returning home and reviewing my warranty information which Garmin explicitly states that is cover in materials used in the manufacturing of their units. When I contacted Garmin without any questions being ask I was told they do not cover cracked screens. I didn't accept this answer and complained that the materials used in this unit was inferior, stating that simply putting the GPS in console should not have caused the screen to crack. I realize they did believe me, they probably thought I had actually dropped the unit causing it to crack. That wasn't the case at all. It cracked just as I said and I certainly didn't appreciate my integrity being questioned. First I was told they was repair the unit for $89.00 which I declined. I received an email from the agent I spoke with about the repair cost.
I called again and spoke with a different agent and same line no warranty coverage on cracked screens. However, this agent did make a difference offer stating they would replace my GPS with a refurbished unit for $45.00. This was a little better than $89.00 offer the first time. So I decided to go with it. In the meantime I was able to get the unit to work using the Voice Command feature which was one of the reason I purchased this specific unit, however the touch will respond to touch on the right side of the screen only. So in essence my unit is probably 75% usable. I have decided to just keep it and hopefully it will continue to work in its current capacity.
The lesson I learned is the Garmin manufacturing does not stand behind their product. I was cut off at the being of the call and no consideration was ever given to me. I am sure that this one unit which I paid just a little less than $200.00 for would have only been a "drop in the bucket" for Garmin to replace this unit. Instead they tried to extort more money from me by offering me a deal. The other thing I learned was even if they were to honor their warranty I would have received a refurbished unit, not the one I sent in or even a new replacement unit. Also, I learned from the second call I made that the first offer to "repair" my unit, I would have been sent a refurbished unit instead not my original unit I sent in for repairs. Garmin is dishonest and I will not buy or recommend their product to anyone.

No manual with unit? No mention the unit doesn't come standard with maps? Found complaints site and this helped. That took me a long time to find a site to download express. most sites never started the download. Then it must have been over an hour or more to get express loaded and then maps. What do you do if you don't have a PC? It's working now.
Updated on 02/19/2017: I eventually got the Garmin to operate correctly. I couldn't get the voice to work no matter what I tried, but eventually found the default voice doesn't work. Switched to one of the other voices and its now 100%. Twice now going to different destinations the voice stated destination on your right, but both times it was on my left. I did download the latest maps. I stand to correction but I seem to remember looking at the screen and the map did show destination on the left? Is it better to use than TomTom, in many respects it is. The mounting is definitely better. Maps in one destination was wrong. Since I got the Nuvi 2589 it's been nothing but problems. I live in New Orleans. Every time I enter a start & end location, the Garmin either starts in Denver Co, or goes from New Orleans, thru Denver, and back to New Orleans. I wanted to drive across town here in New Orleans. The Nuvi 2589 plotted a course south of New Orleans to Dallas Tx, then to Denver, then to Kansas City and then back to New Orleans. Support has been unable to help me with this. It also generally plots the location many miles from where it actually is.
The Nuvi device itself is constantly showing the message that I need to update the maps, then tells me there is not enough internal memory for the download. I put a 64 Gb micro card in the slot, and STILL got the message there is not enough internal memory for the download. And, if that's not bad enough, the Garmin Express Software opens multiple browser windows and tries to download updates CONSTANTLY, causing serious performance issues with my PC. I had an old off-road Garmin and the internal battery died. I tried to get it replaced but the battery cost as much as a new outdoor/off-road unit. So I bought the Montana 650T because it came with the pre-loaded topical maps. I also have an old Nuvi 200W that I use for getting around town and traveling the highways. I've been happy with the Nuvi 200W except it doesn't give me local posted speed limits. The new Nuvis have that feature and I like that. My problem is with the Garmin Montana 650T. There is a street map software available that I bought so I could leave my old Nuvi home and have a two in one unit, an off-road unit for the trails and a city street unit all in one. I was excited after buying the street map software from Garmin.
Unfortunately, I found out that the street map software does not have any way to save your Favorite Contacts and addresses. You have to enter your contact as a Way Point and then go back into the saved Way Point and Edit it with the Name of your Address (only you can't permanently save a Way Point). I spent hours and hours getting all my contacts into this new unit. I went on a trip that took me through seven states. It was a good thing that I took my old Nuvi 200W with me as a back-up because this Montana 650T was sending me off the freeway and onto city streets along the way. After calling Garmin and making some minor adjustments it worked better but I was skeptical. So I set up my old Nuvi 200W next to the new Montana 650T.
Now I was getting conflicting directions like take next exit, the Nuvi said turn left and the Montana 650T would say turn right. At this point I depended on the Nuvi 200W to get me to my destinations. Now I did like the feature of the posted speed limits that the Montana 650T provided. Because I knew where I was going on the way home, I went to my saved Way Points to get an address in the Montana 650T and all my Saved Contacts in Way Points were gone, they magically disappeared. When I got back home, I called Garmin to discuss this problem of losing Way Points and suggested that they add Favorites in their street map software to save our important contacts and addresses because they, Garmin, are the experts when writing the programs for the GPS.
I was told that they would never add a Favorites section to the Montana 650T street maps and I would guess that means all Garmins that are made for outdoor and off-road use. I expressed my disappointment and our conversation was cut short except for the representative telling me to go onto Garmin's website and save my contact information into one of their programs called Base Camp. Why do they need my contact information on their web site? So I can easily retrieve my information when I mistakenly delete it. Since the Garmin representative gave me his answer and he didn't seem to care much about my needs he was quick to end our conversation. I would have been better off buying two units, a less expensive outdoor off-road GPS, a new street map Nuvi and probably saved myself some money and got what I wanted in a GPS. Had I only known beforehand.

Updating maps on a Garmin is a mess, they only support an obsolete browser (I.E.). I got by that after wasting half an hour with tech support, but the updated map I downloaded (for North America) broke the unit. That partly ruined a holiday with the routing messing up constantly and it constantly having to be rebooted (wonderful when driving through strange cities and it has taken you on absurd routes through the 'worst sections' of town). Finally after multiple reinstalls and time with tech support it started working again. Then the big mess, I went to the U.K and paid $100 for the U.K. maps. Nothing worked after that install, it could not even find satellites in an open field let alone route me anywhere. Their tech support does not work weekends and I was not going half way across a strange (to me) country without GPS. I was fed up and got a phone application that works.
They told me there is no possibility of a refund, they said simply they would help me fix it. I asked how I can fix something I cannot use here in North America. Silence from tech support in reply. I wasted most of $200 and caused significant harm to 2 holidays. I will never use a Garmin again, they used to make a decent GPS but they are a broken product these days both in function and customer support. BTW I'm not complaining about tech support, they were helpful but they are dealing with a deeply flawed product and support rules that are little short of contempt for the customer.

I actually did that and everything worked, except the file would ALWAYS bomb out at 50%, reset to zero and not provide any error messages or feedback to the user.
Normally, Garmin is great. In this case, this is the worst customer experience I've had with any software/hardware provider. Don't waste your money on the eTrec equipment. If you can't get maps for a handheld GPS intended to cross country navigation, why waste the time and money? Get lost in the woods. You'll have more fun.

Years ago, I had one of the first Garmin running watches and was very satisfied with it. Within the last year, I bought a Garmin Forerunner 25, and it is horrible. I have had difficulty with it off and on since I bought it, usually with syncing. My most recent problem with syncing is that I kept getting an error message that it couldn't sync my activity to Garmin Connect. I was on my PC, so I tried syncing to my Android. That said the sync was successful, but it wasn't. I was unable to sync later activities until I deleted the file from today, which is the most critical workout I have done all summer. I strongly recommend that you not buy a Garmin Forerunner 25.

I had two Garmin Nuvi 2797LM. One feature that I use frequently is the Find Place under the Voice Command application. One of my Nuvi 2797 was crushed so I replaced it. I was shocked to find that my new one no longer allowed the Find Place option to function "This Feature is not available for the United States in American English". I updated my older Garmin Nuvi 2797LM and the feature still works on it. My guess is that Garmin wasted resources on adding Australian English "Garmin Real Directions" & British English "Garmin Real Directions" in male and female format for a total of 4 new sets. If it were possible I would clone the features for the Voice Location Finder and dump the two new "Garmin Real Directions". It already had one "Garmin Real Directions" so I don't need the other 4.

In the beginning Garmin was great, it was the best you could buy. Well, now it's useless. I have three Garmin devices, my first one carried maps for the whole western world. I even gave directions to my taxi driver whenever I visited the United States. Now, my latest device has so many pretty pictures of motorway junctions that the best my maps can cover is part of Central Europe. The memory is too small and any memory upgrades fall flat on their face. Garmin, be practical, give people maps, not pretty pictures.

I recently traveled through Canada and Italy. I contacted Garmin before the trip and purchased for $160.00 upgrades for these areas. I got to both areas, and neither of them worked. I contacted Garmin from the road and they were of little or no help---they claimed I either installed it wrong, or didn't know what I was doing (nothing was their fault). They said to send it back---which was ridiculous since I was on the road in Northern Italy. That was the extent of their help. I resorted to my little screen Apple I-phone and it worked! When I got home, I complained to Garmin customer service and they didn't even respond. And, of course, never a mention of a refund or credit. My advice: my techie wife tells me there are much better alternatives to Garmin and hopefully have some adequate customer service (unlike Garmin).

I bought a Vivoactive to use for my heart rate training for my first Half Iron Man race. I entered my heart rates for both my running and cycling and everything was going along fine until Garmin decided to do an update to Connect Mobile that did away with the heart rate for the cycling. I emailed them with little response back so I decided to call. I was very disappointed with the answer I received. The tech actually tested the device while on a bike and called me back stating that yes the option was no longer there.
He then proceeded to tell me that if I look at my manual there is a small disclaimer stating that I may not always have all the options that I currently have. He stated he would ask tech support about the possibility of adding this feature back but there was no guarantee. So basically I have a watch that is not going to be of any use on my cycling. I don't understand why it would be so difficult to just add the feature back. This is one disappointed Garmin user.

The IDEA of it is great. Does it work as well as they sell you on? If you are a HUGE business, sure it might, but not without a lot of work to decipher all their graphs, skim through activity one grueling minute at a time, and click on hundreds to thousands of bubbles INDIVIDUALLY to engage with people. If you are a small company, forget it. This service will be a complete waste of money. Not to mention they will say whatever they need to to trick you into a contract and then bind you to it for an entire year. I dislike a lot. I dislike that they don't send invoices at all before you are charged and if you try to access invoices in your account, don't worry you can't because they don't exist there.
I dislike that we were told we had a 30-day no-contract trial that wasn't even long enough to build up enough useful data to see if it was even worth the $300/mo they charge. Not only that, we are such a small company with so low of mentions it has been COMPLETELY useless. They don't care. They just want your money. And because we emailed them a few days after the 30-day trial (including weekends) they "talked to their lawyers" and "the lawyers" just couldn't let us out of the contract. How desperate are they that they need our $300/mo if they have such large companies on board that they brag about on their website?
I also dislike how there is no useful way to engage with Instagram. If you have 1,000 bubbles of engagement you have to click them all individually and change the color to know what you have even checked or not checked. It is tedious, time-consuming, and a complete waste of time. I don't even know how large companies manage this because of how much work it is.
Monitors are hard to set up. You have to specify and narrow down SO much just to tailor it to what you need. You can't be too broad, but you can't be too specific. They will ask to set up calls all day to waste your time just telling you all the work you need to do to get it right. Not resolving any business issues, managing NUVI is actually MORE work than anything. ZERO benefits. We are too small of a company and it is completely useless. They didn't have any sympathy for our less than 100 mentions a day and have bound us to the contract anyway. Cell phone providers don't even lock you into contracts anymore. I think they are extremely desperate for money.

Why would you pay such a high price for Garmin maps? These are so very expensive. I already had the Garmin and wanted maps for Europe. I just paid $69.99 to add "Europe NT: UK and Ireland" maps to my Garmin Nuvi. Foolishly I didn't check the 'coverage' and apparently Europe NT doesn't mean you get the maps for Europe. You only get the maps for UK and Ireland and not the rest Europe too. Are you kidding me?
To be honest, I would want maps for the whole of the frickin' world for $70. You can get the WHOLE WORLD FOR FREE ON GOOGLE MAPS on my iPhone people at Garmin!! Your maps are not that spectacularly good to warrant the price. I am so angry with myself for being so stupid to think Garmin want to give you value for money and keep you happy as a customer. They do not. It's a A RIP OFF!! Maybe I should just buy a suction holder for the car windscreen and use Google maps to navigate around Europe or the rest of the world for that matter.

Well let me tell you don't buy this thing. In my opinion it's a complete ripoff. I wore it the first night, woke up the next morning to see what it read how I slept and it was completely blank, so I took it off and lay it on my dresser.
I worked the weekend and called Garmin on the following Monday. Before I called I looked on the Garmin sleep mode and it gave me readings of how many hours I slept from Thurs to Mon. (I only got this thing on Friday so how did it know how I slept on Thurs?) So when I called Garmin Monday after 9 am, I began to explain to the rep that I would like to return my Garmin and she was very rude and quick to the point of, "I'll email you the address to return it." She also told me, "You have to wear the Garmin 24 hours a day for it to work properly." I work a 12-hour shift job and we can not wear watches/rings. Having bought several years ago in the UK for about £1,000 the Garmin StreetPilot 7200 - big screen for poor eyesight - I then bought the "lifetime" map updates. To me, lifetime means just that - for my lifetime. In other words, when I die, the update service goes, too. WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! One day recently, the screen froze, the cursor wouldn't move, and the directional arrow stayed static. Trying vainly to solve this problem and also to update the unit from the Garmin Express service (updates not possible) when I contacted Garmin they referred first to the wrong model designation, then told me to plug it into a socket to recharge the battery.
The 7200 does not have a battery to recharge. They provided complicated technical information which was not helpful nor understandable. When pressed for service on the lifetime update service I had purchased, back came a long fine print explanation that what had been advertised and promoted as, indeed, lifetime, was in fact not lifetime at all. It was for the lifetime of the product. Well, the product is not dead, and neither am I. I managed to unfreeze the screen myself purely by chance. They never replied to my question about the incorrect charging instruction, nor provide assistance on returning it for examination and/or repair.
On the basis of my experience, I allege Garmin is guilty of false or misleading advertising, false claims about other matters in this regard, and I would DEFINITELY NOT BUY another Garmin. I suggest other potential customers ditch this company and take heed of someone who thought that £1000 was for something that would justify the price and provide that which was promised. I am now writing to Which? magazine and all UK national media and others to present the "lifetime" falsity.

Apparently there is a belief out there that Canada is not part of North America. The company tells me that somewhere else on the box there was a clarification that the maps were only of the lower states. The large print description was wrong. Thus they will not provide Canadian maps unless I pay 60.00 American which is almost 100.00 American. Poor company to deal with.

Garmin's design (for the nvi 260 and presumably for later models) is good in a way but only for Garmin not for the customer! I've had my unit since 2007 and it used to perform well except for taking an annoyingly large number of minutes to find satellites if it had not been used in a few weeks. Lately however, its battery even after being charged for many hours and/or even when connected to a charger does not hold a charge long enough even for the device to finish booting up, much less be of service. I suspected that the battery had simply reached the end of its service life and prepared to get a new one. However, I noticed that the case cannot be opened with any ordinary tools, so I supposed that I would have to send it back to Garmin for a battery. No such luck. Garmin does not make the devices with battery replacement in mind.
Apparently, you have to buy a whole new device even if the battery is the only problem. (That's why it's good for Garmin but not for you.) I also asked about the "lifetime update" that I had bought noting that since I had used it only once and now could not, was there to be a refund? No. I had used the service within the (alleged) working lifetime of the device you see, so I was stuck. Now all I have is a $100+ paperweight... or maybe a skeet target. DO NOT buy anything from Garmin or their competitors if you can't (or if no one else can) change the battery! Speaking of competition, Garmin would do well to reconsider their obstructive policy. The GPS facilities in smartphones may well drive them out of business before too long and they could get at least a few more dollars before the end by allowing themselves to sell a few more batteries...

Phoning them was impossible, so emails were the form of communication. Thank goodness for that, as I now have a huge thread of correspondence as proof of their incompetence. For the 4 weeks I owned the device but could not use it, the Customer Service dept did nothing but argue the toss and were refusing to take my complaints to the manager to address.
After 4 weeks, they finally admitted the unit was at fault, and offered me a reconditioned unit in exchange. I was furious, saying "I had spent nearly £400 on the device which has never worked, and now I have to accept a reconditioned unit for my troubles? I don't think so!" I asked for my money back. They said I had to go back to "Go Outdoors" for that. I did that, and was bowled over by the helpful response they showed me. We knew unit was no longer under warranty, but Garmin would not consider (or respond to our communication about) repair. "No longer supported." Last attempt to update software (after on/off switch problem) resulted in update taking away ability to enter a "go to" address.
