I had this Alcolock device installed yesterday and already it has locked me out and left me stranded. I was going to pick my friend up and go for food when I was driving and it said "retest". I then blew into the device and nothing happened, tried again and nothing happened until it started beeping very fast so I pulled over and shut the motor off. It then locked me out saying missed retest even though I had just been blowing into this thing for 5 minutes trying to get it to stop. I have been completely sober hence it allowed me to start the vehicle.

I then had to call the service number where I was told they have no information to help me and that since it was a technical error that I would have to wait for someone who worked in that department to call me and that he didn't know when that might be. There is a flashing red "Handset Technical Error 22" message and no one knows what it means. I had to leave my car stranded in some neighbourhood and walk home. I have only had this device for one day and I now I am freezing cold and have no car.

Imagine if I was stuck on the highway or somewhere without service, what would happen then? Thankfully I am close enough to home where I could walk but others aren't so lucky. This machine is meant to help both us, the people who have had DUI's as well as our surrounding neighbours but this is not right and for someone to say, "well you just need to tow it"... Sorry but I've already forked out $10,000 to get back on the road, safe and sober and I do not need Alcolock's machine giving me more grief for no reason. If someone has experienced the same error code and got help please message!

I have a private breathalyzer for 20 years - a perfect baby sitter, raised 4 teenage kids with, take the car with the breathalyzer and have a good time. Drinkers do not like machines that restrict their ability to drive. There have been problems during the 20 years with the machines but the benefits outweigh the problems until now. Alco does not service ALBERTA any more, cannot get breathalyzer serviced any more, cannot get any business to remove machine. Alcolock does not return phone calls. As a private customer I paid 2000.00 dollars for it. Now I am faced with removing breathalyzer and worrying about a loved one drinking and driving.

I have had the ALCOLOCK installed for less than a month. Twice I have had to take it in for a reset at a cost of 65 dollars each time. I haven't had a drink of alcohol in over a year. The service center didn't know what set it off and apparently windshield wash, certain coffees, dentyne ice gum, air fresheners, after shave, perfume, bread are just a few things that will require a reset. No one tells you this on install. Just another tax grab if you ask me!!

It is dangerous because you can't use your windshield washer fluid 'cause it will detect it and lock you out. On a wet highway you need the fluid to clean your windshield if not you just as bad as a drunk driver. It is unreliable because it detects anything and everything which gives false reports to the ministry. It is unfair because these false reports can add to your time in this system at a financial cost to you. This system needs to be reviewed and upgraded if the ministry can't without a doubt distinguish between alcohol and other products this program to me is illegal. I like a lot of others look at this as a money grabbing program. We made a mistake like real people do. No need ruin us for it.

Have had the device on my car for 4 months now, get it off at the end of August. I feel bad for the people who have to have it on for a full year or longer. The first 3 months were fine, a few fails after using mouthwash and the morning after a night out but couldn't complain too much. Ironically mid to late July when I only had a little over a month left it start acting up.

Almost every morning it would say it couldn't connect to the ICU in which I had to get a wrench pop the hood and disconnect the battery in order for it to connect. It has since stopped but had to do it for about a week straight. I have been out maybe 3 times for no more than 4-5 beers on a Friday night, stayed at a friends, woke up the next morning and tried to leave around noon after stopping drinking 12 hours prior and it would take sometimes up until 3pm to start the car. I have been late for work, missed class (university) due to this device saying that I have an invalid sample when I know I felt nothing in my system.

The closest SPEEDY Glass where you get it serviced was about an hour away from my place so I would always pay for the 2-month fee so I wouldn't have to drive there every month. In June I paid my last 2-month installment and the next time I went in was going to be when I got it off in August. Unfortunately my starter blew about a week ago and I had to get it fixed. Called Speedy Glass, told them. They were fine with it so I went through with it. Upon turning the car on at the mechanic it said I had an early recall (for tomorrow) so I have to drive an hour out of my way and miss half a day of work due to pretty much nothing, and they can't do anything over the phone.

I understand some people on here will say well you learnt your lesson, your own fault for having the device on the car which yes is true, but this isn't as much of a learning experience as it is a nuisance on my everyday life after already paying 250$ every 2 months, installments, hassle of blowing etc. I shouldn't have to worry daily about if I'm going to be able to start the car due to the device and I shouldn't have to forbid myself from having a few drinks with friends hesitant that I won't be able to drive until 4 the next day. Really need to fix this and can't wait to get rid of it.

Only 2 reasons I'm not giving a 5 star: 1) I have failed twice in the morning after a night of drinks; 2) It sucks having to blow in it which is my own fault. As far as all the people saying they've been left stranded I have never even came close to this and don't understand it. Like I said I have failed twice in the morning around 10am and had to wait about an hour which was annoying but that's what the device is installed for. It's simple to blow in, sometimes I blow too hard/soft but the device notifies you which one you need to do louder. I've had it on since April 2016 it is now June. I get it off in August but the device does the trick, it's easy to use, and it's not a distraction at all.

This is very dangerous driving down highway hands free highway and then have to blow doing 100 km hr with full traffic. Now it keeps locking me out for no reason and leaving me stranded and when I call for assistance they are very rude and won't help. They just say call back in morning and hang up on me. Now I am stuck till Monday morning to get unlocked. I work in Hamilton but live in Windsor and have to drive there to work. So now I lost my job because of all the lockouts and being stranded. The cost of cabs and tow trucks and motels is just stupid. I don't know who runs this program but it is just a money grabber and a very bad system. Why? Get it to go to work and then get fired because all the lockout so they make money. There is no reason I should be locked out and my van stranded. I follow all their rules. Plus I can't drink due to a brain injury. I hope someone can look into this matter.

I spoke with a young man by the name of Josh who was reluctant to identify himself. He told me my was "not a man" because I called in to set up the appointment for the reset and then berated me and slammed the phone on me. I called back to speak to a supervisor and was told by a lady that I was not permitted to speak to a supervisor without explaining my issue with her. It appears that these people are completely unaccountable for poor service. This program is sponsored by taxpayers and the user pays a monthly fee.

NO ONE IS SAFE ON THE ROADS WITH PEOPLE HAVING TO USE AND FOCUS ON THE ALCOLOCK BREATHALYZER DEVICE!! I'm not the one who got charged with the DUI however I'm having to deal with it everyday. This machine left me walking almost 7 kms today in the freezing cold. It's not the first time this has happened either. We live far in the country and it's such a feeling of hopelessness having to deal with this machine knowing full well I will be left stranded. I fear having to leave my house for this reason.

My husband hasn't drunk for over a year now. He wasn't even a drinker before that. He had had five beers at a work function over the course of 4 hrs and he blew over. Drinking and driving is unforgivable however what the courts put you through is punishment enough. Especially for a 60 yr old man with no previous charges of any kind. We've had the machine for six months. It is not user friendly at all.

Today, I blew in it, it told me to start the motor. I did. I got about 7 kms in really bad weather before it told me to blow again. I did and then it told me I was blowing too hard, tried again and it said too soft. This went on for about 5 minutes before it started beeping really fast so I pulled over and turned the ignition off. There were HUGE transports barreling by me. I waited for it to reset itself. That took another 10 minutes. I did this for 1/2 hour and just kept trying to blow to get it started. Never happened. Too soft or too hard.

I had to leave the truck parked on the side of the road and walk all the way back home. I cried the whole way. My neighbor brought my husband and I back this afternoon and sure enough after about 10 blows it said to start the motor. The truck is back at home but I won't ever drive it again. This is the 6th time this has happened to me.

I've spent over $400 on tow trucks and cabs for every time I've tried to blow into this machine and it says "too hard or too soft". I truly wonder how many people have died not only from accidents while trying to use these machines while driving but how many people have had heart attacks because of the stress they cause. Shame on the government for putting everyone at risk using these machines. I have no tolerance for people who drink and drive or text while driving but I will tell you that these machines are so incredibly dangerous that I believe a huge lawsuit needs to be launched on behalf of those of us that are being put in harms way due to these machines.

Being able to travel around the world for work, you have the privilege to experience the constraints people have to live through due to decisions or implements their government puts out. Hence, you automatically feel very lucky to be living in North America. There is freedom, good education, health care at your disposal, no death penalty and laws that are fair. Well, is it really fair sometimes? I have had the adventure recently of sitting in a car that was installed with an interlock. I asked the driver to give me a brief story. The driver said he made a mistake, drank and drove. Results was one year suspended license, a one day course for $600 and then installing the interlock for a year. It's a hefty price to drink and drive but he won't forget this again and I agree. But what fails is the interlock machine. Being in a wonderful country, you cannot believe the government will allow such a failed machine to be installed.

The system needs to be blown every 20 minutes or so. But there is a specific way to do so. Imagine blowing into a device while your driving and the device fails, you blow again and it reads too hard or too soft, resulting to endless beeping. Not only is it frustrating and annoying , it's very dangerous. The driver told me, sometimes you blow many times and you can't start the car because the machine can't read 'your breath'. Driver told me rather it was a blood tester instead because it's probably a one shot. Your citizens have paid their dues and yet you have them install a device that is so hard to operate. Is it because the government can't come up with a better solution so they install this failed device and endanger people when they drive? I think blowing into the device is fine, but when the device itself is a failure, why would you install it. You, who have approved this, have you tried this device yourself or you have and think it cracks you up?

Have had 2 new machines put in because the 1st was a faulty, and now I have a message saying "early recall". I have "blown over" 6 times this week. YET I have not had a drink since July 26th 2013.. I am vivid, as I see from other comments other people are feeling the same way...

I take full responsibility for my actions in the past and I am paying for it now. I don't know other people's stories but I am about $18,500.00 in the ground from this due to a bad accident and no medical coverage being taken care of throughout the accident. I believe I have paid my dues. I did the crime, and paying my time. But this extra little kick in the ass is so frustrating. Being sober for nearly 2.5 years now and having a people at the interlock place accuse me of drinking just twists me the wrong way... I am curious as to, if people have fought this extra charge since it is not "our" fault...? Wishing everyone else with these issues the best of luck!

They failed to tell me that when you reset your car it overrides the reminder built in for your service. Hmm...sound like they want you to screw up to take advantage of you. These people gain and won't help you at all. They want you to miss things so they can rip you off. I had this system put in my car 2 weeks ago. I take full blame for the dui. I however didn't get pulled over for eating and driving, perfume in the car or my wind shield fluids. It's not my fault, your stupid faulty system doesn't work probably but yet we have to pay 75 dollars to have the codes taken off. I got pulled over for a dui and that's all. Go make a better system before you make people pay for one that doesn't even work and then charge us more money for something that isn't our fault. I understand we signed up for it but you think we had a choice when our other option was not to drive for 2 years? You guys don't deserve to be operating with such a faulty system and very surprised you guys haven't been shut down just alone by your consumers. But I guess when we have no other choice we really can't say anything. But just know you guys win the award for the biggest scam in the world.

This device is an inhumane device. It is dangerous, causes mental distress and is very unpredictable. I cannot believe that this device has not caused any accidents. The fact that it is so unreliable in being able to blow/hum correctly when 5 minutes before blowing the same way was acceptable is beyond distressing. Knowing that the device can demand another breath sample not even 5 minutes after the last "acceptable" sample was supplied makes it very difficult to think about anything else! Is this safe driving??? No it is not.

This is mental cruelty beyond belief. I just got in my car after working hard all day and could not blow/hum correctly. To save me from having to spend all my wages that I just made that day to pay the price for an early recall reset (that can be done over the phone) I left my car at work before the demand for early recall showed up. I'm still not sure if all the failed attempts from not humming or blowing loud enough are just banked and when I walk to work tomorrow and try again it might only allow me one more attempt! What is this? This is wrong.

I just had the ALCOLOCK interlock device just taken out of my car after 6 long months. My DUI happened in 2010 and my case finally went to court Dec 2014. So here I was on probation and wanted to get this device put in right away granted my license was still valid. I am at the Interlock location in Sunrise Florida not knowing that my license needed to be suspended first to which then I could apply for the hardship license is the day the interlock starts. I asked them if they could remove the device and I would come back once the suspension takes place. They said they could but it will be another fee on top of the $100 I just paid along with the reschedule fee. I was pissed so I said "just keep the ** in."

It was now January, no suspension and I had to go in and pay another $100 for calibration that still won't count because my license was still valid. I got in the phone and called my attorney to call the state of Florida to get this suspension started which they did in February. I got in for the calibration and the days start now. Thank God. The device to me was quite simple since I watched tons of YouTube videos on how to blow and hum at the same time. I am in my 3rd month when the device gave me a fail and I couldn't figure out why. The only thing I drunk before I left was some cranberry juice and I am thinking that was the issue so my time dropped from 21 days to 7. So I go in, had to pay $75 and explain what happened and they sent me on my way.

Now it's month 4. I am leaving work, did the start up test, passed. So I am stuck in traffic and decided to smoke my hookah cigar and the liquid got in my mouth. The same time it was time to test and it failed telling me to pull over, turn off car and wait 30 mins. I drunk all the water I had and started car with no problems. I go to place, pay another $75 and explain what happened and was told I will receive a letter from the state of Florida and if I get another fail I will get extended. I got letter and was told I had to go to counseling until the device was out and had to pay $25 a session - more money. I was thinking for these next two months I am going to live my life through that device. No eating, drinking anything other than water for the next 2 months which is what I did and I didn't have any problems and now thank God it's out and my car seems to be running better.

To everyone on here I have read all the comments and I really feel sorry for what everyone is going through because I know how depressing this device can be. The only advice I can give is to live by that device, drink plenty of water and have a water jug with you at all time in the car. No eating, putting on cologne until after you have shut off car and properly turn off device. You shouldn't have any issues. Until then good luck and this will pass. Good luck.

My device was installed in my car over a month ago and I have not been able to drive it since then. It just keeps telling me to blow harder or hum louder or it doesn't read anything at all. I suffered a stroke 1 year ago and perhaps that has affected my ability to operate the device effectively. The roadside breath tests do not involve humming but are apparently considered very reliable first time every time.

Even if I can get it to work when leaving my home, I am terrified to drive anywhere in case it doesn't work when I want to return. This situation is extremely stressful for me. I thought the point of the program was to prevent people from driving after drinking and not to prevent them from driving at all. I did my time with a license suspension and have paid through the nose in fees and fines but there seems to be no end to the punishment... I have had to cancel pre-surgery appointments because my device is not reliable.

I'm sending this in on behalf of a friend who has 2 interlock systems installed, one in his personal truck and another allowed by his employer in a semi. Throughout the duration of this time using these products he lost time (=money) not mentioning the stress the inefficiency of this product. In SK SGI speaks of drivers that are being distracted being charged etc. From my experience driving with "A" this product is very distracting. Yes he understands it was his fault in having a DWI but I'm concerned in the safety of others like myself when I know people using this product have so much difficulty and no one seems to answer to it. "A" has only till May 8, 2015 when these items will be removed, at a charge of $50.00 each, although SGI has allowed these to be removed as soon as he's back from North Carolina as it left him/semi sitting on the side of an interstate.

He had 3 breathing machines plus numerous plastic heads and thankfully did eventually get started. It was this incident that SGI felt safety was becoming an issue and advised they'd have it removed. Sure he has to pay for his DWI, which he has through numerous fines. I don't understand why he has no recourse to Guardian for lost time, stress, and he'll still have pay to have them removed. This company is making money to start and okay that's the requirement, but to the people using this product it seems very unfair what they have to go through.

Basically any time I have had a problem and called Alcolock, they were not helpful at all. And tried their best to frustrate me also with scripted answers. Then I finally got a guy in a good mood. Basically he said all of the aborts and potential lockouts from the inability to properly read the sample stem from the outside climate and anything to do with what you have eaten or imbibed (nothing new here). How to get around this is; try and always blow while indoors but not in your car. This obviously screws you while blowing in motion. I find opening my window and replacing whatever air was in my car usually helps. Finally, the only way to control your breath itself is to keep a non alcohol based mouthwash (ya right) or fill your car with 2-4's of water, and start gargling before every blow.

Keep in mind, we are drunk drivers, the scum of the earth. People literally equate us to murderers, even if most of us aren't felony DUIs (I was pulled I blew a 1.0). So Alcolock doesn't have to help us, because society says it's okay to treat us like dirt. There will no help for us until a lawyer gets caught, has go through this, and gets sufficiently pissed off enough to want to make change. Unless of course someone wants to start an online petition, in which case I'm pretty sure all of us plus our loved ones who suffered because of this would sign...

Get in the car, pass, go to the gas station across the road, fail 5 min lock out, 2 15 min lock outs, pass, start driving, fail, pull over and turn off engine message, 5 min lock out and then pass again. Days like this all the time, at the Dr's office, come out, fail - 20C walking home. 6 hours later try again - 2 more fails then a pass. This is ridiculous and beyond frustrating!

I have had zero alcohol to drink in months. They then told me their device failed 3 times when tested in my car and told me something in the car was triggering it. Detailed car, and for 2 weeks, no incidents, other than the device cracked for second time. The unit would come totally disconnect when I picked it up to do a test while driving. Again they blamed me, telling I was yanking on it!! Replaced with a 3rd unit, also cracked at the bottom. 3 days to go and more fails for no reason.

This has caused so much undue stress, missed appointments - can't schedule anything, never knowing when I'll be left stranded in -30C weather. Service is terrible, technician is a total arrogant JERK. They accept no responsibility - stock answer "the device is detecting alcohol and will not trigger unless it does". As directed by the court I had the unit installed in my vehicle to obtain a license. I couldn't find any companies in my area and found Alcolock online. After speaking with a salesperson they directed me to the closest installation and assured me that they had no problems with false readings as I am facing a prison sentence if convicted again. The service people installed a wireless device.

I had problems from the first day with the warm up mode disengaging on its own and causing a missed test, which generates an occurrence report and a charge for service. That happened at least six times in two months. False positives happened four times in the same period because of soda, after shave, fueling the auto and windshield washer fluid. The last time I went to two police stations before I was able to be tested and couldn't get a breathalyzer but a field sobriety test. Many times the two units would not communicate with each other causing an occurrence report.

After the last issue I decided to have the unit taken out and the people at the service center told me they would not unless I had a letter from the Judge. I had to explain to them it is my choice if I want the unit to drive and I don't want to drive. It was a horrible experience and made me sick with worry wondering if the unit would fail me. I have made the choice to wait another two years till my suspension is up to drive again - that's how terrible my nerves were. I am much happier walking or riding my bicycle or calling on a ride. Save yourself hardship and find another company.

The concept of this machine is to measure the alcohol level in one's breath. This machine reacts to any and all substances in the air. ie: windshield washer fluid, pizza, perfumes, gasoline fumes, toothpaste, the list is endless. Consequently it shuts users vehicles down unjustly, and if it does it twice in a row the user has to

make an appointment to go in to their service depot at their convenience, pay a fee $75, lose time from work - another cost factor. I would like to know how they are allowed to have such an inefficient machine installed into the ignition system of any vehicle. A machine that is obviously used as a money grab machine, which is installed in thousands of vehicles. Obviously the Govt, benefits as well. Why???

My boyfriend voluntary put the interlock in his van. The judge said he didn't have to have it put in because my boyfriend wasn't driving, he was sleeping. But he still got charged with care and control. And lost his license for a year. This ridiculous device is completely faulty. Too many service charges for doing nothing wrong. I can't count the amount of times we were locked out for no reason. We had it removed December 12, 2014. The lady in the office was so rude and she lied to us. She said go for a coffee they won't be ready to remove the device for an hour and a half, we said no. We were the only ones there. Not even two minutes later the tech, came out and took the van in. It took only 20 minutes to remove. She just wanted to inconvenience us. (RUDE). The van has been sitting since December 12. It would turn over but not start. Whatever they did to the wires has caused this so today we had it towed to a garage and we are waiting to hear from them. (More money because of interlock.)

I admit like most people that has left comments that I admit that I did receive a DUI which is of course a clear lesson learned. I some major concerns. There is only one facility in Calgary to deal with this servicing this device. This makes it very time consuming and costly to obtain service. The staff is indifferent to any concerns raised - in their opinion the device is flawless. Obviously it is flawed if it cannot tell the difference between windshield washer fluid and ETOH, or an energy drink, or food, or mouthwash, etc.

It is almost impossible to reach any staff member. They are often out on smoke breaks and let the office phones ring repeatedly without answering them. On one occasion I left my friend in the car and they said the staff member was on a personal cell phone call of nearly 20 minutes while I waited. In an emergency situation you are routed to the call center in BC which tells you to call Alberta where there is a promise for a return call within 24 hrs. This is useless when stranded on Deerfoot Trail with cars flying by you at 120K. The calls are not returned either in my experience. $65 for ten minutes work to clear the code for an early recall is insane. What a cash grab.

After my device was downloaded and showed fails, I was provided the opportunity to provide rational for the fail (washer fluid on a very sloppy day) and was told it would be forwarded to the government for review. After calling the government they confirmed that they never received that part of the report and that it was not the first time that day.

There is no way to defend yourself in the event of a fail. In my situation on Deerfoot, I drove to the police department and asked for a breath test and they could not unless I was placed under arrest. The officer did give me his card and said he would confirm that in his professional experience I did not appear in any way to have been drinking. This is actually worse than being guilty until proven innocent as there is no way to prove your innocence.

The device behaves inconsistently in cold weather - sometimes it will not boot up at all and have to bring the device indoors to warm up. Lots of fun with people and work waiting for you. While I agree that this program provides a valuable service it is far from perfect. I hope new devices are being trialed that do not report false positives which have very negative impact on peoples lives. Staff members should empathize with clients (yes we are still clients) and not be short and rude.

Pop and body spray set it off, window washer fluid will also then you get it serviced and they ask why you have fails. And that's the scam. They can say you were drinking and stick more time to you. Their system is faulty, just read the reviews. They're all pretty similar.

First of all the Alcolock device was obviously designed by someone residing in a warm climate because it cannot handle the cold weather. Therefore why the Canadian government would choose this particular device is mind blowing. The device is unsafe as it asks you to blow into it while driving and at the most inopportune times. The device is so flimsy, and every time something goes wrong, you have to take it in and pay money. This is a money grab and nothing more. Shame on you Canadian government for adopting this program and not something better.

I had the interlock for a year. I had some issues in the beginning accepting that this is part of the punishment but soon realized it is more for breaking the mindset that someone is doing something to me when it really is ALL on my own shoulders. The device did have a few issues caused by my cars battery issues so I corrected those and the device functioned well for the year and the customer service was good and pleasant and I never had to pay anything extra and was always cordial to the folks who were maintaining the device as none of this was caused by them!!

I must say the device did change my drinking re the next day driving so I timed my drinking so as not to have any fails the next morning. I did not find the rolling test to be much of a problem as I could do it on the fly or simply pull over. I did find using cologne to be an issue so I went scent free for the year and the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles had no issues with the few fails I had and yes, one was a morning after issue but I was upfront about it and all was ok! This device will change your drinking habits to accommodate your ability to drive sober... That said having it has ensured that I will NEVER drink and drive again and to this day I am aware of the morning after and drink accordingly!!!

My common-law has had the interlock on his truck since Jan 2014. Since then, he has had 6 lockouts which required an early recall. At the time of the install, it was never explained that after 3 violations, an early recall notice would show on the guardian device and if you didn't take it in to the service department, your vehicle won't start by the date shown on it. This happened to my common law. He had an appointment on the Monday after the recall date of Friday midnight so he decided to wait until then, not knowing that after midnight of the recall date, his vehicle would be locked out. He couldn't even read the date on the device as it was so small.

When Monday morning came, he went to start his vehicle for work and it would not start so he couldn't go to work nor take it in. He called the 1-800 number and luckily, he had a credit card to pay the "violation fee" for them to give him the code to reset it so he could start it and take it to the designated service center. He subsequently took it in and had the data downloaded and they informed him at this time that if the interlock device detects alcohol 3 times, you get an early recall notice on the machine. Now, he never drank anything before blowing but each time, it was from residual alcohol from the night before. Even after 8 hours, if you are a heavy drinker, it is still in your system. The maxiumum that he blew was .03 from the night before. Therefore, he had to wait sometimes until 8:30 a.m. before his BAC was back to 000.

At this point, we both decided that this was obviously a bit of a cash grab. He felt totally fine and didn't believe there was anything left in his system from the night before but evidently, there was. My solution to this, in order to beat this from happening was to buy a BAC device for $150. The one that I chose is the one that pairs with your iPhone (as long as it is Bluetooth 4 capable). Now that he has this trusty device, which is very accurate and uses the same technology that the police breathalyzer instrument uses, he simply blows into it each morning before blowing into the Guardian device. If it detects even .01 % alcohol he waits until it is 0. It even provides a graph which shows when you will be back to 0. Super accurate. However, you must send it back to the company once a year to be calibrated (same as the police breathalyzers/they need to be calibrated after so many breath tests as well). This has taken away a lot of the frustration and confusion that the interlock device has caused in the past.

In my opinion, especially if you are an alcoholic and have a high tolerance for alcohol, purchasing a BAC that is accurate is the way to go. At $150 - $175, it can save you thousands of dollars. I think that perhaps some people have been locked out because of residual alcohol in their system and do not realize it. Even though the legal limit is .08% the Guardian device gives you a zero tolerance. I think it is good in theory to have these devices installed for hardcore alcoholics; however, it has become a money grab for sure. A person is hit hard with fines and then the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles now has become Judge and Jury and can impose extensions and further prohibitions on a person's driver's licence. One can appeal any decisions as it is our right as a Canadian; however he/she must have good grounds for this. One has to play by the rules if you want to be able to legally drive so purchase one of these BAC instruments and you will be glad that you did!!

Then it came up with a warning stating that I had to go back to where it was fitted within a week so I took it back the next day and was charged 66 dollars for doing nothing wrong. Typical government. Still not getting things right. This is supposed to measure alcohol intake not food. I feel like I should be reimbursed as I am still paying for my drink driving offense which happened 2 years ago. Why was I allowed to drive five minutes after a lockout? I had the Guardian Interlock device in my car for a year. I take full responsibility for my DUI, I was truly not aware of the slight amount of alcohol that could exceed the legal amount on a breathalyzer. I had the handset installed in my car in January of 2013. Before I arrived home from the installation office in Mississauga, my breathalyzer had locked me out twice. The first time was my very first retest.

When I called the office, I was instructed to pay $65.00 to the Interlock Company, and then book an appointment to come in and see the technician, which I did. The device locked me out on a subsequent retest before the appointment date. The technician advised me to put vinegar in my window wash fluid container instead of washer fluid, he said it was the washer fluid that was setting off the machine. I advised him vinegar will freeze in -15 degree weather, and this was probably not a good solution to the issue... He told me there was nothing he could do, and I would have to deal with the issue.

The device continued to randomly fail retests, I continued (for a month) to return weekly for re-calibrations. The last retest fail and lock-out was on the 410 exit ramp, with transport trucks behind and in front of me, with no place to pull off. I came very close to having an accident, which was probably the impetus to return to the Galaxy Drive interlock office and request they change my hand set. I was told hand sets have never been faulty, and they do not change hand sets. I advised female office admin, I would remain in the office until closing, at which time they had two options; change the hand set or call the police to remove me from the office.

At around 3:30, she went to the back garage, a male technician came out to tell me the hand set would not be changed, and I very calmly advised him of the same. He kicked the wall to the left of the left of the garage door, went back into the garage and my hand set was exchanged. The female admin reported that this would look very bad on my record. I remained silent. The breathalyzer retest did not fail again for the next full month. I did have subsequent random retest fails, usually when I used washer fluid, and more so in the cold weather, when heat is on in the car. I changed office visits to eastern Ontario, the technician at this location advised me that he had to change many hand sets that were faulty, setting off the re-test for no apparent reason.

I am an honest professional, a law abiding citizen, emotionally stable and reasonable. And like many many other law abiding citizens, I made a mistake, which I take full responsibility, and will never repeat that mistake. This company is a farce, the hand set is dangerous, and I can honestly admit (as can friends and family) that this device nearly cost me my mental stability. Attempting to drive and continually retesting or having to pull over on a busy highway while in the midst of traffic, snowy conditions, rush hour, etc. is absolutely dangerous. With the exception of the technician in eastern Ontario, every single staff member I have reached by phone or in person has been either rude or not intelligently reasonable.

I had an excess of over $100.00 in the interlock account when I had the device removed in Jan 2014. I have called the head office a total of 6 times, left 4 messages over a 5 week period, and have NOT received 1 return phone call. One telecommunication person advised me, it would be unreasonable (due to their high volume of calls) to hear back from the accounts personnel within 5 business days, as she is extremely busy. This business is the equivalent of underground fraudsters preying on the vulnerable, abusing people who feel very ashamed and guilty for making a moral mistake (and criminal mistake). The government has really hit the nail on the head here... I hope the Ombudsman soon gets a hold of this money laundering business, it's a money racket. Problem is, the overseas company knows full-well, the last people who want to file legal complaints are those charged with a criminal offense!

After an evening with friends, I went to leave. No matter what I tried all I received was "Invalid Sample". I warmed it up as it was a cold night. Over and over that's all it did. After the 12th time I called the 800 number for some assistance. Their recommendation was to hold it upside down for 10 minutes, then unplug and re-plug it in. That's all they could say. Not to change the mouth piece, or warm it up even more. I finally had to leave my vehicle and get it the next at which time, there was no problem. When I got into my monthly meeting, she gave me all kinds of things I should have tried. She laughed out loud about the holding upside down suggestion.

I was also coming out of what I was told was my final meeting. We had booked the date and time to have the device removed. It was a sunny day and the roads were sloppy. I was traveling 100KM/H and used my window washer so I could see. At that very moment the device wanted a retest. It told me to pull over immediately and shut off my engine. I have used my window washer fluid in town any number of times without issue or conflict with the device for nearly 9 months. Why would I even think to be concerned while traveling at highway speeds?

Sure enough, it locked me out a second time and without even a second thought they extended me 3 more months. Like I would jump in my car and have a couple of drinks leaving my final meeting 3 days from getting rid of that damn thing! They wouldn't even discuss it. They said I had been trained and I should have known. Maybe so, but not after 9 months of never having an issue. The customer service told me to turn off my heat, open my windows. The engine is off. How the Hell do I open my windows when I can't even turn on the key? They then told me to open my car door. I was on a off-ramp with transport trucks passing me inches from my car. How the Hell can I open a door without it being removed? The other door was wedged against the snow bank at the side of the road.

So, because the lowest bidder came up with a pathetic solution with crap hardware, I and others pay the price. This is the very best the great Province of Ontario can come up with? I can't wait for the revolution to come. I'm tired of the inmates running the jail with keys to the vaults.

I finally received a call back on Thursday, Dec 20th, by Daniella who said she would help out and see about getting me an earlier appointment than Jan 8th which was the earliest appointment date. She was meant to call me back the following day with an update which I never did receive. I did receive a call back on the 24th saying that she couldn't do anything and the nearest date is Jan 10th, pushing me even further back than when I first started.

I have since tried to contact the main number (416) 619-3500 leaving voicemail message for the Manager Gosia on 3 separate occasions Dec 27th and the 29th because the mainline of 1 866 658 6374 wasn't providing much luck with reaching anyone to help. Unfortunately I've now run into the same issue. Is there someone at the company that cares enough to help out a customer who is simply trying to support his family and work but is unable to do so because no one is either able or willing to call me and provide their assistance. Disappointed Customer."

I've since followed up with a Senior rep via Email overseas as I wasn't having any luck whatsoever Locally. Email: "I'm sorry to have to bother you with this being that you're so far however I really don't know how else to proceed. I just received a callback from the original rep Daniella that was supposed to be looking into helping me from our conversation from Dec. 20th. She was not only rude and telling me that she's very busy and it's the holiday time so I should be more understanding why it's been so slow and why she's not been able to help. After stating that I should have booked the original appointment that was previously available for January 8th and I should not have waited until now. I was never advised to take this appointment as Daniella was trying to find me an earlier available date, otherwise common sense would have prevailed and I would have. I had no idea how poorly this call center is set up with people not returning calls and being rude."

Daniella outright called me a "LIAR" when I said I was never offered to book the original appointment while she was helping me. I'm an Account Executive that has worked in the customer service industry a very long time and have never been spoken to so rudely. After I said that this option was not offered and being called a Liar, she said she was ending the call and proceeded to hang up on me. I'm still stuck in the same predicament I was from Dec. 17th which is when I began this process. Can someone professional please assist me here as I'm truly at my wits' end with no resolution in site. I have no idea how a business can run like this and being tied to a Government program with no other options. Simply boggles my mind. Any advice please don't hesitate to let me know.

Looked in the manual and it said, system tampered by either push start hotwire. I called Speedy, they asked if I did any maintenance or disconnected the battery. No, didn't leave my house. Now I have to drive 135kms to have it serviced at my own expense. 40.00 gas, 65 service fee and 150.00 for a day’s wage. "Horse **".

So I called the Interlock Company, Motor Vehicles, superintendent of Motor Vehicles and the ombudsman of British Columbia. They all said that there was nothing they could do for me. Superintendent MV told me that they had actually gave Guardian Interlock the contract for British Columbia, but they had no control over how they do business and extort money from clients. How can they force you to sign a document to get your license back which includes terms that you pay for their own equipment failure?

If you ever want to drive again, you almost have to sign, no matter what consumer or civil rights you give up. Just like having a gun put to your head to sign. After 1 year, I just had my device removed today. I was due to bring the car in at 9:00am. This is a Monday, but the device was programmed to be brought back yesterday, which was Sunday, but GIS is closed. I was informed by the people from GIS (whom were always courteous and helpful with me, even today) that this would not be an issue, that it would just beep in the car that I have missed the appointment, and just to drive straight there this morning.

But here’s what happened. At 7:55am, I gave my first sample and it allowed me to start the car. Within 5-minutes it asked me to blow again like usual I did so; but this time it failed me telling me to pull over and stop the car. This had never happened before and I was 5-minutes to the GIS Center. So I did not stop and went straight there with the alarm going as I pulled into their parking lot. I told them, "Hey you did not tell me that it would start alarming for the missed appointment". They said that it had to be the second breath sample, it read 0.25. I said "impossible". Their excuse is that it must have detected something in the car or something that I had consumed. But I had consumed nothing; in fact I was about to get a coffee when this happened and instead just went straight to GIS.

I consumed nothing and know without a doubt that this device is faulty. This was my only rolling failure, but I know for sure that I had a couple of other false readings in winter when trying to start. It just proves undeniably that this device is not as reliable as they claim. I broke the law and know that I deserve what I got, but this device causes a lot of unneeded anxiety and will cause someone undo harm sooner or later. Thankful that it is over.

After receiving my DUI, I joined AA the next day. I have been sober for 20 months, and using this device is frustrating me more than any of the 12 steps. If it has not happened yet, someone will get this device shoved up their you know what. This device can be programmed for easier use, for e.g., blow before starting the engine only not every 30 minutes. After, this is unsafe. I am a drunk off the roads, but now, I am a grateful alcoholic who is frustrated and driving with a hand held device which I have to blow 8 times before the right reading tells me I can drive safely. Oh, what are we going to do about those people who drive with their pets on their laps? I am asking for someone to stand up for us and get a loud thank you.

I have had the Interlock machine in my car for 15 months. Where do I start? The original install was the wireless model and did not work. There were constant early recalls and I was told that my battery was dropping too low and my vehicle was too old. I bought a new battery, same problem. After spending numerous hours on hold with Guardian and no resolution, I demanded a new install. The people at the service center agreed with me that there were too many defects with Guardian's devices and after reading reviews I know that it`s not just me.

So they installed an older (hard-wired) model into my 96 Blazer and no problem, until it got really cold and my Warm-up mode would not work. I have a 3-year-old and at temperatures in the morning of -35 C, I cannot warm my car up without sitting in the vehicle with my child. I have had to start unplugging my handset at night to keep it warm in the house and get this! By unplugging it, the light on the base in my car stays lit and drains my battery. This is unacceptable ... Need a boost; I do daily!

The Guardian systems are absolutely horrible and should be deemed illegal. I have seen numerous devices on YouTube where the demonstrations were performed with a blow and a medium hum. My device constantly tells me I'm not humming loud enough and in order for it to register, I basically have to scream at the top of my lungs while maintaining a medium blow level to pass. Trust me, this is not easy! I get lightheaded while driving on the road and trying to get my retest done before the car starts going crazy with lights and horns. One day, someone's going to kill someone else while driving and trying to operate this contraption. Someone needs to figure out a better system than this unreliable piece of junk. I hope the province votes NDP and they realize how idiotic this is and have it removed.

Twice within three weeks, I have had 2-5 minute lockouts and numerous clean breath samples immediately before and immediately after the 5-minute lock out period. I contacted both the installer and Guardian and was told it was out of their hands. Obviously, there's no alcohol consumption with clean breath samples, documented minutes before and after the lockout period. This is a money grab obviously dismissing their own data.

I would like to start by saying that I did make a mistake. I did receive a DUI and I do think I should have to pay for my actions. I, however, think that the way that Guardian Interlock treats their clients is absolutely ridiculous. Even under the circumstances, I feel that I should still be treated like a human being and I should receive exceptional service from my "service provider".

I have had this device since July 2012 and have had nothing but problems. I recently got an early recall for absolutely no reason. I was in Kamloops at a dance competition and I needed to get to my home in Vernon. The device gave me multiple abort 15 messages. I rinsed my mouth with water, aired out the vehicle, drank a full bottle of water and tried again. Lock out 5:00 appears. I wait and try again (rinsed mouth aired vehicle). Lock out 15:00 appeared. I left the machine for the 15 minute lockout and called my "emergency service provider". They said that there was nothing they could do in the case of a lock out and that I would just have to wait. I was told to air the car out and rinse my mouth. I told her I had done so already. She said shake the device a few times; there might be moisture in it.

Also, I had mentioned that I had eaten pizza half an hour before trying. She said that this could be the problem that the pizza had caused it to fail. I tried again after the lockout was finished and after multiple abort 15 messages, what do you know, Lockout 15:00. At this point, I was very frustrated I was stranded in Kamloops and needed to get home. I have been told that a second failure results in an early recall (you pay money basically for no reason; they can fix this problem over the phone). I think that it is ridiculous that I have to pay for something when I have no idea what I did wrong. Was I just supposed to stay in Kamloops for the night? If I were not to try the breathalyzer, I would be stranded and still get an early recall. If I was to try again and fail the test, it would result in an early recall. Finally at 8pm (3 hours later), my car started.

Every service provider I talk to really has no clue what to say to me. They say there is nothing they can do. Well thank you for the service Guardian Interlock! I find it terribly frustrating that they have not made a better working device; with technology these days, you think they would have this intact. I understand that I drank and drove and must pay the price, but I think I deserve a little more respect from your company. I also think there should be a 24-hour helpline in your own province that actually knows what’s going on. The response I get from the helpline usually is “We are in Montreal ma’am; we do not know anything about your device and your restrictions.” I am happy that others are having this issue; I say we band together and fight this, this is inhuman!

I am just happy to see so many other people complaining of the same problems that I had. Like so many others, I learned my lesson and was completely and utterly confused when I would try and start my car in the morning for work and was denied. There were a couple of times when I was leaving from work (obviously not imbibing in alcohol) and of course the car started with no problems. Driving down the highway, in the fast lane with no worries, the retest beeper came on. Again, no problem, I blew into it and all the bells and whistles went off! I was terrified. I had to pull over 3 lanes of traffic to make sure I stop before the engine completely shuts down; I waited for the 5 min lockout (after running over a curb because I was so shaken up), and then blew again. I almost ripped the machine out when it happily noted "drive safely". I have since had the device removed but had to prolong the removal date by 1 day because I had dental surgery that caused me to blow over. (I wasn't willing to chance a second test that day as it would have extended me for another 3 months so I sat suffering with root canal pain until a buddy could pick me up).

Are you ** kidding me?! If this isn't the biggest money grab ever, I don't know what is. Fair enough, I got caught doing something wrong, but I have paid and paid and paid. If the people at Guardian had been a little less **, it might have been easier to swallow, but between them and the ministry of transportation, it was absolutely impossible to explain any situation including having my penance extended another 3 months for blowing over twice in a row in the last 3 months of my term. Meaning I got the 5-minute lockout, waited another hour because I knew I hadn't done anything wrong, and got the second lockout. I inquired and saw that the BAC was 0.001. I could have been the bagel or juice or whatever. Do you think the police would have charged me with that or that I was weaving to-and-fro all over the road? Beware… bagels and juice for breakfast is evil and dangerous.

I would like to know why there aren’t service techs available 24/7. Some of us people using the interlock system have businesses to run, lives to live and jobs to go to. We have paid for our mistakes and are still paying for them, so why is it that when anyone tries to call, it takes a very long time to reach anyone? And when you do, you don’t get required answers. We the people are paying for a service and, in my opinion, not getting what we were forced to pay for in order to drive. Please hire more qualified people to answer and help with the problems with your equipment 7 days a week. When you consider that a lot of people travel on weekends, it might be a good idea to have techs available to help families stranded on the road.

Every time I need to speak to someone from customer service, it is nearly impossible to reach any of them. If you leave a message for a call back within 24 hrs, be prepared to do it again. I called the after hours number thinking that’s great that they have one of those. Guess what, the person that answered that call couldn’t help me either. He could only take a message. Well, that’s great then, now I’m stuck out of town on Easter and I can’t get to work and I have no one to call for help because the after hours phone line is now perpetually busy.

There is definitely room for improvement in regards to Guardian Interlock. What a joke! My device had gone into an early recall with a date of 2012-04-08 at 23:59 hrs, which is Sunday at midnight and they're closed. Now, it’s gone into service lockout and I’m stranded 2 hrs from where I need to be.

First off. Beginning installation, was initially told set price. Was billed 200 dollars more for the installation. Also was booked for 10:00 o'clock, wasn't even seen until 12:00. Car wasn't completed until 4:00. (Same goes for monthly service appointments--booked for 10:00, not seen until 12:00). My time is money, too.

Secondly. Vehicle needed repair. November 9th was towed into mechanics shop. Phoned Guardian to advise of needed repairs as per their contract. "No repairs until notification." Tried all afternoon with no response and finally left message. Nov. 10th phoned left message and called back a number of times. No response. Nov. 11th called left message. No response. Nov. 14th called again left message and tried numerous times to get through, yet they are still "busy" and I received no response nor call back. (Keep in mind my vehicle is in shop taking up space).

Nov. 15th and 16th, called many times and left messages. No response. Nov. 17th, called and got same "please leave message" answer. Called back to different area of Guardian. Got an actual person. Asked who oversaw this program so I can make a complaint? (Government agency since it IS, sanctioned by them)? They said no one regulates them but I may speak to a manager. Was told they would personally take my concerns "across the hall and hand them my name and number and I will have a return call by the end of the day." That was yesterday. Today is now the 18th of Nov.

I will begin by admitting that I made a big mistake. I did the crime and I have to pay the consequences. However, the interlock has made my life more miserable than it has to be. I have had several "early recalls" although I've done nothing wrong, and nothing to tamper with the machine. I checked my starter for continuity, and only being two-years-old, it works at will. I asked the installer if it was relevant to the interlock, and he said it probably is but there's nothing he can do about it. I've been stranded out of town; I have been late for work. It's embarrassing to no end. If I weren't so embarrassed by having an interlock, I'd speak up and protest against this cash-cow they have going.
