On 2/13, I called Acorn to schedule time for a serviceman to come out and temporarily remove my stairlift because I was having some work being done on the 2nd floor and the chair would interfere with the movement of materials. I also said would want the chair removed on 2/20 and put back on 2/23. I was told the cost for the service call was $295 payable at the time of service. The service man was to be out on 2/20 between 8 am and 1pm. The service man did his part and I paid the $295; he told me they were having trouble with their computers and the most he could charge was $250, so he reduced the cost to $250. Needless to say, I was pleased both with the service and the price and paid the $250.
NOW FOR THE REST OF THE STORY... As I talked with the serviceman, he then dropped the bomb that there would be an additional charge of $295 when they came out to reinstall the chair. At that point, I knew I had to talk to someone at HQ and so I called Customer Service and spoke with the CS supervisor, Suzanne. She reiterated that I would be charged the $295, but would also be charged the $45 that was discounted on my payment! So, all told the amount would be $340! Suzanne was insistent that her records showed that I was told the 2 charges would be $295 each. Needless to say my record had only one charge of $295 for the work being done both removal and reinstalling. (I took notes during the initial call).
Suzanne then threatened me by saying she would put a hold on my account since there was the question of whether or not I would pay the total of $340. THAT AMOUNT WAS NOT ONLY FOR THE RE-INSTALLATION, BUT ALSO FOR THE $45 DISCOUNT THAT I WAS GIVEN BY THE SERVICEMAN. My background is in customer service and bad advertising costing any amount is not worth it. So, I emphatically state that Acorn was not accommodating on either the discount or the cost of the reinstallation. Once she threatened to put a hold on my job, it was clear that she felt she had nothing to lose.

Absolute failure of performance, without one ride up or down the stairs. Now, almost four months after Acorn’s “Surveyor” came to measure, estimate and contract for the installation: Nothing has happened. Well almost nothing - they did take my deposit and cash my check. There was some urgency due to an accident leaving my wife using a wheelchair and walker for some time. The contract was signed on OCT 23rd, 2025 and the install date was to be DEC 17th, 2025. The installer did not come, complaining of weather issues.
Rescheduled for JAN 5th: another no show/no contact, rescheduled for the following day: again no show/no contact. Scheduler never called. Finally a week later, I called Acorn to find out what the problem was and was asked to reschedule the install for 27 JAN. At that point I told them to cancel the installation and refund my deposit. GUESS WHAT? Crickets, at this point. No further contact from them, No refund in the mail. Is dealing with Acorn the worst consumer experience in my octogenarian life?? Yup…

Add me to the list of folks Acorn has duped! Like many others, I did extensive research regarding stairlift companies and went with Acorn because of how well the sales rep presented and sold me on their product. I've only had the unit since Nov. 10th, 2025, but didn't really begin using it until my wife can home from rehab hospital on 18 Dec., 2025. So, with only two weeks of normal use, I now receive an "H1" error code that has rendered the chair useless. Like many others, I called the service number, waited on hold for approximately 20-minutes just to get an answering service informing me to leave a message and my number for service department to call me later--never happened.
Finally, called this morning and spoke to service rep who informed me that a technician will need to come out and that she is listing my service-ticket as "high priority". Received a call ten minutes later and the lady I spoke to informed me they can send a technician out on 8 Jan, 2026--three days from now. I explained that three days from now is totally unacceptable, as this chair is a medical necessity device for my wife. She said sorry, that's the best she can do.
I have submitted a complaint to the BBB indicating like others, this company uses deceptive practices to get their products sold. Presentation and explanation of services provided by the sales rep does not match at all with the actual services, or should I indicate "lack of service" being given. Mind all, my trouble ticket was submitted as "high priority". Hate to find out response time is for standard trouble tickets! At this point, I wish I can just have them take this unit out, refund my money so I can go with another more honest company.

Customer Service is poor. Pay for annual maintenance and when calling due to a hard failure (i.e. Stops working) on the weekend they told me only return calls next business day. Another example trying to schedule annual maintenance review is a joke. Takes multiple phone calls to get someone to confirm if/when maintenance is scheduled. The service tech agreed how bad service is, he claims there's a staff shortage. If there's a better company I'm considering replacing because can not afford to have my chair down for days on end.

I requested stairlift quotes for my elderly mother to keep her safe on the stairs. Acorn was the third company we met with and the experience was not positive. The representative took photos and measurements but did not provide the same level of education or guidance as the other two companies. Both other providers recommended installing the lift on the right side of the stairs due to safety and layout. Acorn recommended the left side without explanation beyond outlet placement and dismissed the other companies as “wrong,” which did not inspire confidence.
Acorn’s initial price was noticeably higher. The representative then pushed a limited-time “promotional price” that reduced the quote by about $1,000, around ten percent. That type of pressure-based sales tactic feels outdated and inappropriate in the stairlift industry where vulnerable customers and caregivers are making serious safety decisions.
A follow-up call from Acorn’s call center was even more concerning. Instead of answering questions about value differences, the representative questioned whether I understood the comparison, claimed competitor dealers “low-ball” pricing and then charge high service fees, and argued they cannot diagnose or service equipment. This was especially concerning because Acorn requires an annual diagnostic fee for its own system. The tone was dismissive, aggressive, and not customer-focused, and the call ended abruptly with the representative telling me to go with the competitor. Stairlifts are not a casual purchase. They are essential for safety and peace of mind. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend Acorn.

When the installation tech came to our home I asked him not to drill into the stairs and if it could go into the wall. The technician told me that when the chair lift is no longer needed and needed to be taken out that Acorn would fix the holes in the stairs. This was for my mother in law that lived downstairs. I have now asked to have the stairs removed and the company is now saying that they are not a company that does not do wood working and would not fix the holes. I would never have let then drill into the stairs. The person I spoke with was not even willing responsibility for the work stating that the person does not work for the company and cannot confirm what he had said. Poor quality, frequent breakdowns. Expensive service contracts. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE...THEY DO NOT RETURN CALLS. When my parents both became ill and had to be relocated to assisted living it took me one week to finally get somebody to call me back and that person was basically useless. Once our issue was escalated to a "manager" it took another 10 days to hear from them.
You think you are getting a deal because they are cheaper than many companies in the industry but their service contracts are expensive $600 a year..and they will charge you $300 to remove it if you can even get them on the phone to come remove it. I called several companies that remove chairlifts to refurbish and resell or donate and they declined. They said they don't deal with Acorn products...RED FLAG... We purchased our Acorn Stairlift after we both developed mobility issues. We desired to remain in our home and our research made Acorn our best apparent choice. After our installation we discovered that the warranty was for only one year. After that year one needed to purchase extended warranty protection. This is very expensive and takes away our trust in this company. I also discovered that major appliance companies are doing this as well.

Beware of misleading practices. When I spoke with the sales representative, I was clearly told the product came with a lifetime warranty, and I explicitly asked whether any maintenance plans were required to maintain it. The rep assured me they were not. However, a year later, the company is now claiming that the lifetime warranty is void unless I purchase their expensive maintenance plans. They insist this condition was stated in the agreement, but it was never disclosed to me during the sales process. This experience has left me feeling misled and taken advantage of. In my opinion, the company's practices are deceptive and dishonest. I wish I can give zero stars.

My wife's mobility had been decreasing significantly and in March 2024, I ordered and had installed in our main house, a stairlift to cover from the basement to the first floor to the second floor. Then in June, because we liked the freedom it gave my wife, we ordered a 2 floor one for my cottage and it was installed. Unfortunately, my wife died November 30, 2024. For the stairlift that covers three floors, I can park the chair at the top and out of the way. For the one that covers two floors, I can only park it at the top or the bottom of the stair lift. I phoned the service about getting the chair removed and the cost was said the be 750$. I declined. I suspect if the service man came, he would have it off in less than 30 minutes. Let me start by staying in am disabled and got the Acorn chairlift because I cannot walk much less for up and down stairs. I am single and alone and this chair stopped in the middle of the stairs and stranded me. It would not work at all. There should be some safety feature built in where if the chair senses or encounters issues that it immediately returns to the docking station. But it does not. Since I am disabled and alone I had to call emergency services to help get me off chair. I could have fallen despite the seat belt and been seriously injured or even killed because of the flaw.
When I called customer service and told them I thought it was the battery they agreed and went on to inform me they normally on last 1-2 years. We got this in 2021 and it's now 2025. They were out in August for other mechanical issues that caused the stairlift to be unable to be used for 4 days because something went out on the chair. Despite knowing battery life they didn't bother about replacing in August which would have prevented this issue. They simply don't care.
When we called them even though we pay a ton extra for their "gold star policy" (which is joke and just a excuse to charge you more) they told us someone would reach at by the end of Monday evening! WHAT?!?! This happened Saturday and you won't even call someone until Monday evening?!?! Can't be bothered to come out until till sometime when they feel like it on Tuesday!!! So I am stranded and confined to one level of my house until they decided they can bother to send someone out?!?! HORRIBLE SERVICE! To summarize my issues; it's noisy, vibrates when moving up and down the track, the parts are very poorly made and now I have an issue where the chair will just stop. I have to move the seat back and forth or lift and lower the foot rest to restart it. Now I know why they want so much for a yearly warranty; $1400 CDN for a year! This is how they make their real money.... And they keep phoning and emailing me to sign up for their "warranty". It's a fairly simple machine that's made poorly and just pushed out the door to unsuspecting seniors and disabled people. Shame on the Acorn company! When it finally fails, I'm going to just replace it with another brand with better reviews.

We had an Acorn stairlift installed for my Father-in-law on August 29, 2024. He was 93 at the time and was in declining physical health, especially regarding mobility on the stairs in his house. In less than one month his health worsened and he ended up in the hospital after a fall. The fall did not cause further injury but was an indicator of his declining overall health. After a few days in the hospital he was discharged to a rehab facility. But he was only there overnight and then back to the hospital. He subsequently passed away while in the hospital due to other health complications.
The stair lift is practically new, having only been used less than one month total. Acorn will not buy back the unit and they wanted $300 just to uninstall it. Don't do business with Acorn. Find another stairlift company that will buy back the unit if it becomes necessary, as in this instance. Several of Acorn's competitors offer buyback programs. Avoid Acorn or you will probably regret it!! $6495 for the stair lift and good luck if you don't need it soon after it's installed due to a death. Unacceptable!!!

I purchased the Acorn Stairlift two years ago. I was surprised at how noisy the lift is. They told me that was normal. I have since learned only normal for Acorn. They charge you 350.00 and more a year to get yearly maintenance. Then they schedule you four months out. I explained that the chair was making new odd noises and needed to be serviced. They said sorry four months is as soon as we can get out. I would not recommend this company or product. I have decided to not renew my maintenance agreement and when this chair finally dies to buy a better product from a reputable company that actually stands behind their products.

Two weeks after the lift was installed, there was an issue. Service tech would come out and inspect the issue for $400 plus cost of parts if needed. My parents have had their chair for probably 7 years. Until the past couple of years there was no issue with getting a technician out to service. Lately that hadn’t been the case, but the technicians are good. My issue is with the service contract. Extremely expensive ($800 + a year) but no choice since you get priority if service is needed. I paid the annual renewal in late July effective August 9, 2024. My father passed away September 12. My mother was hospitalized on September 14 and is currently under hospice protocol in an assisted living facility. I called to cancel the service contract today. I was told that cancellation had to occur within 30 days of payment. The contract was at day 82 so no refund could be issued for the unused portion of the service contract. I just think that’s a terrible way to treat your customers. If the need for a stairlift arises in the future, I’ll be certain to look elsewhere. Cannot in good conscience recommend Acorn.

Customer service is non-existent for scheduling service visits and probably for anything else. In the past they never answered the phone. Currently you are subjected to two recorded sales pitches for other unrelated products and you still cannot talk to anyone. I have also requested service visits through the Acorn Club and any message you send will never be read. You are required to pay for the annual service contract if you want to have the recommended yearly service. They are quick to bill and collect the fee for the service contract but you can forget about getting a service visit scheduled. Do not do business with this company. Look for a local company in your area that will stand behind their products and actually care about your business.

Where to start? First, I'd urge you to look elsewhere if you want to deal with a company that's honest, at least that was my experience. Here's the story of my experience with these people. Spencer was the salesperson. In my view, he overpromised and Acorn underdelivered. First thing, the chair travels too slowly. At my house, it takes the chair 99 seconds to go from stopped at the bottom of the stairway up one story. I asked if they could speed it up? "NO!" said Sam. It's obvious to me they can, but won't. Second, I asked Spencer how much weight the footrest could hold? Spencer did not know so he called the factory. He called using his cell phone and had it on hands free so I heard the conversation. The factory person said "180 pounds". Later, after the installer had it the chair installed, I told him what Spencer said about the footrest. Sam, the installer said "No, it might hold 50 pounds". So either someone lied or is uninformed.
INSTALLATION: as for installation. The chair is about 40 days old and gets used once in the morning and once or twice at night. The paint has chipping off the support rail. I guess the installation wasn't up to par. Because the chair bounces when going over the splices in the support rail. Now, about service: the installer arrived here wearing shorts and a T-shirt. He also wore on ball cap (on backwards like a 9 year old). One entire arm was tattooed. I'm okay with a few tattoos, but if your entire arm is tattooed, for gosh sake, wear a long sleeve shirt. Particularly in an old person's home. If he'd not been driving a van that said "Acorn" on the side, I'd not have let him in. No uniform or business cards. After he'd finished the install, I actually tried asking a questions. Sam either ignored my questions or interrupted me before I could finish my question. When I asked him to please wait, to hear me out, you'd have thought I called his mother a nasty name.
Then he says "You're getting angry!" Well, he was right about that. I guess asking to be allowed to finish my question means I'm getting angry. Sam never bothered to actually listen to my questions. Instead, he'd just talked over me. Then he used "Tech speak" instead of actually talking like a real person to another person. Sam went on to describe the "chair safe" option. He said the chair would not operate without the "chair safe" program. That was one the day he installed the chair. When he came back to do the repairs. I asked again about the chair program. This time he said yes, "it will work without chair safe." Maybe I didn't ask the question in the right way the first time, or maybe he was busy talking over my question to hear what I'd asked.
On to repairs: the whole reason for my call for repair was the foot rest did not fully retract. The foot rest became a sort of trip hazard. Instead of doing the repair (he later did), Sam said that was normal so we could "see the state of charge" on the display. There's a display that gets blocked when the footrest is all the way up. In the end, he did manage to get the footrest to retract. At least it is retracting now. But who knows how long that will last. So,in a nutshell, I'd suggest you look elsewhere if you want a company that actually does what it says. If you don't mind being lied to and insulted, these guys are great. However, if you're like me, and think paying $10,000.00 for a product means you'd like to be treated better than the panhandler on the corner begging for change, then look somewhere else for a chair lift. You deserve better than these people.

Purchased stairlift in 2019. We pay $895 per year for ‘3 star’ warranty. Frequent issues to say the least. Website says we get service within 24 hours. NOT TRUE. First - they do not answer the phone 24 hours a day, and sometimes never call back. SECOND, Schedulers work M-F during business hours. If your lift leaves you between floors at 5:01 PM Friday, get comfy because they will not even look at availability until Monday. If you are absolutely depending on a stairlift for access to bed or bathroom, don’t buy an Acorn. If you are someone who wants one only for convenience, and actually have the ability to walk, then I guess it might do. I need to immediately purchase a chair stairlift for my recently disabled husband who can no longer climb the 12 stairs to the second floor of our 2-story house. I had a couple of sales reps from different chairlift companies come to the house this week to review the stairs and provide a quote. The Acorn sales person was very nice and polite. However, much of the information he provided were undocumented, oral representations as to the high quality of the Acorn stairlift product, cost of the extended warranty ($40/month), represented lack of any problems with the equipment or any purchasers complaints with the Acorn stairlift etc. When I said I had to think about it and check them out, I got a one day offer of a $500 discount which I declined.
Needless to say, red flags went up. Advice--read the reviews and complaints on Acorn stairlifts, never sign any contract at initial visit. Request a hard copy of the contract and carefully review all of its terms before you sign it. Buyers Beware as these contracts are legally binding after you sign them whether you read all of their terms or not, and the contractual terms are favorable to the company whose lawyers wrote their company contracts. The National Council on Aging had a recent article May, 2024, on the best chairlifts. Acorn was not one of them. Do your research and avoid the problems the many Acorn chairlift purchasers have reported.
Frankly, I find it appalling that Acorn stairlifts company would be so inconsiderate in their treatment of their disabled customers who need a chairlift. Since I did not purchase based on all negative reviews and my personal experience at the initial sales contact, I do not have a receipt. Luckily, many, many thanks to all the purchasers who shared their bad experiences with Acorn chairlifts. I am purchasing a chairlift this week that was highly recommended by many consumer sources from another chairlift company I met with this week.

We have 2 of these in 2 locations for over 5 years and both have similar problems, mainly battery, or sensors- stopping in mid run. Customer after service is terrible, phone hours are very limited- no after 5 calls, no weekend call. house call service is only Monday to Friday(4 hour arrival window) sometimes leave a message but no call back. The only thing good is the actual technicians that come out- very friendly seem to know what they are doing- but have been a few times we have to call for a revist soon after.Really could take a week to get a technician in. The machines themselves seem to have design or program flaws that could be improved upon. Never fails to a breakdown a few times a year so I guess that's why they push the warranty sales ($1500 to $1700/year).
I think people view this equipment as an essential medical device that makes a total difference in life and allows them to stay in their home. You would think that Acorn would have that same view of the products they provide- yes it is equipment but essentially they should view themselves as a service provider- if they did I think it would be better for their customers and company.

I called 3 weeks back to schedule the service. The service rep told me that since this is a normal check and not a repair call, the service will be scheduled when a serviceman is in the area. She said that it may thus be 1-2 weeks before the service is done. It has since then been almost a month. When I called last week to ask, they would still not tell me when the service would be scheduled. Instead, the agent tried to sell me annual maintenance contract for $675 per year. This is the formal complaint I filed against Acorn Stairlift with the Better Business Bureau regarding its failure to provide timely service for my 93-year-old mother's stairlift in Sioux Falls, SD. My mother has been relying on this stairlift for years, and when we recently had new floors installed, two of the supports had to be unscrewed. We promptly contacted Acorn to request assistance in re-attaching the lift supports on January 15, 2024. However, despite numerous calls and assurances, we have yet to receive any satisfactory resolution.
After multiple attempts to reach out, we were finally connected with Mike, who claimed to be the top contact at Acorn. Unfortunately, the conversation with Mike and my husband this week was extremely unpleasant, and even after several weeks, we are still unable to get Acorn to come and repair the lift. It is imperative to note that this stairlift is my mother's sole means of accessing essential areas of her home, including her freezer, extra food, and laundry.
The prolonged delay in service has severely impacted her daily life and independence. It is unacceptable that Acorn Stairlift cannot fulfill its obligation to service lifts in Sioux Falls. If they are unable to provide adequate support in this area, they should cease selling their products here altogether. At this point, we are not seeking monetary compensation; rather, we demand that Acorn fulfills their contractual obligations promptly. It is evident that Acorn Stairlift is in breach of contract, and we urge the Better Business Bureau to intervene and ensure that appropriate action is taken to rectify this situation. Thank you for your attention to this matter. We trust that the Better Business Bureau will investigate this complaint thoroughly and assist us in achieving a resolution.

Complaint to BBB is more detailed and has replies from the Company. Now I would like to warn potential buyer. Acorn installed the product without problems, except one. The stairlift operates on the power from batteries and they have to be recharged from the charging places. The seat (with the charging contact) has to make contact with the special place on railing while the chair is not moving. Ours did not make that contact. Chair spots were missing charging spots on the railing. (Only 1 cm difference.) We lost the batteries twice before we figured the problem. Without this adjustment the chair lift will not operate and we will lose depleted batteries again.
2 Batteries cost is over $ 300.00. Adjustment was one minute job with the special tool which was supposed to be included with the stairs package. We had to buy it from the Internet. We consider that the installation is still not finished by Acorn. Acorn secretaries are unusually arrogant and has no practical knowledge about the product. They always blame the customer for problems. I would never buy from this company again. PS Do you know that Acorn is charging $400.00 just to come to your place for repair? Our chairlift was 8 months old when the issues started. It’s a straight railway extending from the first floor to the basement, and is approximately 17’ long. This unit is used maybe 2-3 times per week. About 4 weeks ago it just stopped running when moving up the stairs. Luckily my husband was able to get it back to the bottom using the remote, because if it’s not sitting at the very bottom or top, in the charging port, it beeps really loud. The unit would not move upwards at all. We called the company and was told the earliest they could come would be 10 days later. Good thing we don’t need it to get to our bedroom! The representative also said that it sounded like the batteries were bad. We questioned how that could be since they’re only 8 months old and not even used daily. He didn’t provide a specific answer, just that the technician would have to look at it.
On appointment day he arrived in a timely fashion, however he was more concerned with getting on our internet when he first arrived than our chairlift. After telling me that he had to clock in that he was here, I reluctantly agreed and entered our internet password into his phone. After fiddling with the unit for about 10-15 minutes, he indicated that the batteries were no good. Once again we reiterated that they were only 8 months old. He responded that he understood but that was the problem, and unfortunately they were not covered under the warranty so the cost to replace them would be $70. We were stuck, and had no choice but to purchase new batteries. Less than one week later the unit was dead again, wouldn’t budge.
We called again and spoke to “Ron”, who was as condescending as he could be. He basically said that being as the batteries were just replaced, the problem must be in the wiring. When we told him that the outlet was also 8 months old because it was installed specifically for the chairlift, and that my husband had already tested it, he still insinuated that it had to be something on our end. He said he would put in a “courtesy service order” since a technician had just been here. A “courtesy service order”, are you kidding me! The chairlift won’t move at all but you’re going to give me the “courtesy” of another service call.

Since they needed a chairlift and the two staircases were identical, everyone agreed it would be ideal if we paid to remove and reinstall the almost brand new unit which would help our friends recover a lot of the $4000 they had just spent. Keep in mind Acorn does not buy back or resell units so your only option as an owner if you need to sell one is to find an ideal situation like this.
Well, after 10 days and 4 phone calls we have all given up and we will be purchasing my mother-in-law any stairlift brand other than Acorn. The only time they called us back was when we left a message saying we wanted a new lift and then the call was within the hour. When we told them our situation, they immediately transferred us to leave another unanswered message. Do not be fooled by any positive reviews because every one of those is about the technicians and install process. Yes, the technicians are very nice, but if you do any research at all you will see that after that Acorn dumps you at the bottom of the stairs.

We ordered a stairlift for our new home. We had asked for something on the smaller and less obtrusive side as it wasn't going to be used much and didn't want it to be in the way. The chair was installed last week. It's enormous and obtrusive and clearly in the way of installing proper railings and regular use of the staircase. They have a piece of the track tilted upwards, which looks ridiculous. We contacted the company and they refuse to do anything whatsoever to alleviate the problem. They will, as what they call a courtesy, uninstall the chair, but won't take it off the property. They offer no refunds even though they were contacted within 12 hours of the installation. You sit on hold forever and then they refuse to offer any kind of assistance. Look elsewhere for a better product from a better company. These people should be avoided at all costs!

We've owned an Acorn Stairlift for many years now. We've had many instances of breakdowns and it has proven to be very unreliable. What is most frustrating is their service never seem to have enough staff to respond to service requests. They will never give you reasonable response unless you complain. If you plan on making such a purchase, I highly recommend you do your research because, had I done my own research, we would have never purchased from Acorn Stairlift. Don't make the same mistake we did.

Acorn install simple straight chairlift in November 2021. It stopped working May 2023, 6 months after 12 month warranty ended. Acorn sent rep out to fix, rep said battery was bad and replaced at a cost of $380.00 ($250 service call $80.00 battery). 2 weeks later stair lift stops working again with same problem (so it wasn't fixed). Acorn states it will cost another $250.00 service call plus parts although battery will be covered as battery has a 90 day warranty. They really push selling their annual extended warranty at a cost of $595.00/yr. So I ended up having to purchase that warranty as I'm already out $380.00. for the service call 2 weeks ago to fix. This is a terrible policy for a relatively new item which they state on their website that it is an unlikely event their stair lift will stop working. So remember to include an annual fee of $595.00 if you don't want to be ripped off by their service professionals.

Overall we are satisfied with Acorn service and installation but the product has some minor annoyances which you cannot find out till the stairlift is installed: If you have an open staircase with glass or rails you can see the gear track, the bolts and screws of the elevator. Only if the track faces the wall do you have a nice white cover. No advertising photo shows that! Also the open track is sensitive to dust and dirt. The shrill sound of the activation of the elevator at the beginning and end is very annoying, especially if you want to use the lift at night. To operate the lift you have to hold the hand lever all the time while the lift goes up or down. Very hard for people with arthritis and it hinders you to hold/carry anything while traveling. You also have to hold it if you send the lift up or down with the remote control and you have to wait till it arrives.

Called to have the batteries replaced on my older model lift. Was told it will cost $400 for them to come look at it plus the cost of the batteries. If the problem isn't the batteries I still have to pay the $400 & whatever else cost to repair the unit. Basically they won't even come out to look at it due to age. I was told I could find some place that sells the batteries & hopefully find someone who can replace them for me. Why would I recommend this company if they won't even look after their own units. Big rip off, gouging by the company of the elderly & disabled. My other lift is a Silver Cross, when I called them they gave me a price right away & the repair person was here to fix it within the week.

Once an Acorn Stairlift goes out of warranty, Acorn does not want to provide a yearly maintenance contract for it. They only service the newest products in a home. Their attitude towards older stairlifts that need servicing is to say it is the user's problem. Today, I learned that my service request for two of my stairlifts that are about to fail, will cost $250 per stairlift plus parts and labor. A maintenance contract for the newest stairlift costs $595 per year. A service appointment takes over three weeks. As long as the lifts are new and need no servicing, they work well. But just have a problem, and the problem begins with customer service and their attitude of take it or leave it. Not customer friendly in any way.
I have had two of my three lifts since 2008. The newest, with more problems than the other two, is only two years old. This company gets your initial business, and then treats you as something to avoid, or pay through the nose for their technician to visit. I have recommended this company over the years, but I have had it with them. Avoid them and find a different company for your disability needs for a stairlift. The rating of 1 is too high for this company. AVOID.

Just replaced 2 old Model 120 Superglides with 2 Model 130 T700s. They made a design change which for me is causing bruises. The 120 armrests went up hinged at the back of the lift and were out of the way. The model 130 armrests hinge at the front 3rd of the chair and thus protrude much further out. The result is that I am constantly banging into them when I walk up or down the steps. My arms are bruised. BTW I am not the user so they are parked when I use the stairs.

I purchased a stairlift for my husband in November 2020. In December of 2021 I was informed that in order to keep the warranty on my chairlift I needed to purchase a yearly maintenance plan in the amount of $795. Initially, I declined, because after paying over $15K for this lift, I felt the plan was way overpriced. However, the salesperson relentlessly, called me two to three times every week. I purchased the plan and was told someone would contact me to schedule an appointment to inspect my stairlift.
I have called this company at least 3 times throughout 2022. Each time I was assured someone would be contacting me to schedule an appointment. The next to the last last call was on September 22, 2022 and I spoke with a manager name Jodi. She once again assured me that someone would be contacting me to schedule an appointment, she blamed on COVID. I requested 2 weeks ago for a full refund from this company.
First of all, $795 a year for an inspection after paying over $15K is a scam. How dare they take advantage of handicap individuals, many with a limited income. Additionally, to add insult to injury take the money and NEVER provide a service. A complete rip-off! In the meantime, I don't know if the machine needs adjusting or not and my handicapped husband and handicapped mother uses it often. I have asked for my money back and the company has yet to respond. So disappointing. I would never recommend this company to anyone.

They couldn't come to service until 12/15, and I decided to terminate the warranty, expecting a rebate of the 10 months remaining. I was told that had to be done within 30 days of purchase. (It's in the fine print on the back of your brochure.) A supervisor (Jody) called and was very unhelpful and continued to tell me how important the warranty is. Do not buy this product! There has got to be something better out there, but now I'm stuck. The service technician was very nice- give him a raise from my $599!

Had the lift for almost a year. It works well but did have one breakdown that required a repairman. The worst characteristic of the lift is that the alarm that sounds when the electricity goes off can not be turned off. It can be heard throughout the house, and it is like sitting in your car with the horn alarm blowing with no way to turn it off. Everyone loses power, sometimes for hours or days, and the alarm continues. When asked why and how to fix it I was told by company representatives that it is a safety feature, which is pure **. The company's engineering remedy that I was instructed to do is to put pillows over the sound, which does not help. Unless you are deaf I would not recommend this lift.

I've had the stairlift lift since 2012. I've not had many problems. However, when I have had issues, the techs have resolved them. My problem is not with the lift itself but with customer service. Although I have an annual contract, it is so difficult to set up a service appt unless the annual contract is about to expire. The agent I spoke to today was rude and condescending. I asked to speak with someone else, and got a tongue lashing from the agent before he transferred me. He clearly did not want to send someone out to help with the problem I was having. This happened to be the exact same problem I had with the stairlift 8 months ago when it was serviced. They made it seem the problem was not really a problem.
The best they could do for me was to send a tech out to do an annual inspection (which according the contract) I'm entitled to. And I was told if the problem gets worse to call back. The soonest they could get me an inspection was one whole month from now. I will NOT be renewing my contract with them when it expires in August 2022. We purchased and had the stairlift installed last February 2021. My husband has heart disease and Parkinsons. It was difficult for him to navigate the stairs because of the heart disease, however, the Parkinsons made the stairs impossible. The salesman came to the house; we discussed the chair and its benefits, and based on his presentation we purchased the chair. Two days later a technician came and installed the chairlift. We were very happy with both of these gentlemen and we were very happy with the chair. Our experience with the chairlift, the initial the salesperson and the installer was great! Based on our experience with both gentlemen we would recommend the chair; The chair works perfectly.
My husband uses the chair 2 times a day. He comes down dressed in the morning and goes up to bed at night. We were happy and recommended the Acorn stairlift to everyone. However, all of that changed when our initial service agreement expired at the end of the year. We have had no issues with the chair. It works perfectly. In one year my husband has used the chair approximately 700+ times. I don't use the chair, and we don't use the chair as a delivery system for stuff going up or coming down the stairs. There are no small children in the house; our grandchildren are adults.
We were very happy with the chair and with Acorn until we received a phone call from the service agreement salesperson. We decided based on our experience with the chair, we were not interested in paying $500+ for the extensive service plan. We would however, pay the $250 to have the equipment checked out. The first time the sales agreement salesperson called my husband hung up on him because he was belligerent. My husband told him we were not interested in the expensive extended service plan. Weeks later the gentleman called again; the conversation continued as before and this time the salesperson hung up on my husband.
Thursday, we received another call and this time it was my turn. The salesperson was belligerent with me. I told him I had no problem paying $250 and having the tech come out and look over the equipment but I thought the other plan was excessive and not needed. I told him if we only use the chair maybe 800 times a year, the chair, and its batteries should last longer than one year. He countered with "people getting their robe caught and coins dropping in the track". Yes, all this could happen but not every year. I told him I would pay $250 but not the $500+. He continued to argue with me, because for him, the expensive service plan was the goal. Finally, he could tell by my tone of voice that I was done and I no longer was going to be polite. He decided that I was not changing my mind he said he would close the account.
For us the initial experience was great. The chair is great! The warranty salesperson was belligerent and rude! The chair fulfilled our needs and based on that I would recommend the chair. But be aware the high pressure is coming at the end of the year! My husband and I have been in customer service and financial services for more than 50 years - we know how to make a person "feel warm and fuzzy" toward our product or service - the high pressure salesperson for the warranty is not the way to do it.

Wires not taped but butt connected wired components. Replaced batteries and a lower limit door that he broke in servicing my unit. Unit worked until the new batteries went dead. He never cleaned the contacts for the charge source until he was done with whatever he did. Then only cleaned the lower contacts. When we call it is several days before someone comes out and it’s $250 a pop just for the service call plus any parts. They act like they don’t care how much the elderly person relies on the chair. My mother lives with us and depends on this chair for daily use. She cannot get up or down without it. She cannot get to the kitchen and unless we stay in her room with her until the repair person comes she spends several days alone because she cannot come up. I would never recommend an Acorn stairlift and am stuck with one that doesn’t work half the time. I may have to put my mother in a home because of this.

My 77 yr old mother was in need of a major back surgery and was looking to have a lift installed for after the surgery. We called and set up an appt for a bid. The technician that came out was very nice and professional. He seemed to be able to answer all our questions and mom had 2 ladies in other condo building over, as they were also interested in lifts for their buildings. Feeling satisfied mom.
Gave technician $1000 down. We were told they usually can install within 3 days so just call when she was close to coming home from Surgery. I called the number he gave for installation 2 weeks ahead just in case! Good thing bc they weren’t able to install until the day before mom was coming home. I schedule a vacation day from work and I’m told they will arrive between 8-11 but will call when on way. At 11:20 when no one has arrived I call to find out that installation was canceled!!!?? Canceled??? Who canceled this? Oh THEY CANCELED IT bc they found out they needed additional approval from the county!!!! No phone call to me about this!
Mom has now been home 11 days with no way out of condo. Today I was told it could be another 14 days and that it is not Acorn's fault and I need to be patient!! When I asked about a discount for my vacation day lost and the time lost and inconvenience the sales manager informed me it wasn’t Acorn's fault!? Really??? We canceled our $11k order and have requested deposit back!! The other 2 ladies will also not be using this company!! They are out 3 stairlifts and have a “who cares, sorry about your luck” attitude! Definitely do not recommend.

Josh of Acorn contacted me to discuss the issues I stated in my initial review. Josh is a great listener and wants his customers to be happy so he offered to have a repair tech fix the bumpy ride that occured when the chair rides over the rail joint. He sent Dwyane ** to fix the rail. Dwyane arrived and was skeptical at first, then he rode the chair and said the rail needed to be fixed. I was impressed with Dwayne's mechanical skills and his tenacity to correct the issues. He worked very hard and spent a lot of time securing the rail. I wish the previous tech taken the time to ensure the rail was installed properly. However, I am a happy camper with Acorn.

Purchased Jan 2020. As the chair passes over the split rail it is making more noise and getting more bumpy. 1st call CSR said he couldn't hear the noise so there was nothing he could do. The next call the CSR said that was normal if it was installed over carpeting. I called to ask about how to remove the chair so the new furniture movers would not damage the chair. Acorn requires a technician and would not tell me how to do it. The second call the CSR said they were prevented from telling because the Food & Drug Administration would fine them but they could send a tech. When I purchased it the salesman said the chair had a lifetime warranty as long as I had the annual service. The extended warranty department called and said that was not true and I should spend $500 each year to warranty the unit. This is a very dishonest company. I regret buying from them. I think they are predators of the elderly and physically impaired.

Our stairlift was installed at our home in Waldorf, MD in November 2019. The stairlift was never installed correctly. The installer showed up smelling of cigarettes (and so did all the parts), and it was clear from the moment he walked in the door that he did not want to be there. The rails were not installed correctly. The joists on the rails on which the chair glides weren't flush in several places, and the chair knocks every time it goes over the uneven joists. Because the rollers on the chair literally scrapes every time it goes over the uneven joists, the rollers have already started to wear down, and it's only been 3 months. The rail needs to be reinstalled. We had two service appointments to come look at the issue, but at each appointment, the technician said that they weren't installers and weren't the type of technician needed to fix the issue.
After the second service appointment, I called to complain, and was told a manager would call me back. After a week, no manager called me back. I called the service number again, and they found a manger who would speak to me. The manager told me to find my pamphlet where it says that bumps are common and that I should accept it. I told him that we don't feel safe on the stairlift, and he (reluctantly) set up an appointment for a technician to come look at the problem. The technician ran several hours late that day and we had to reschedule.
We rescheduled for February 14, but at 6 o'clock on February 13, we got a call saying they were cancelling on us again. Unfortunately, I'm having major surgery on February 18 and we need the stairlift fixed now. We're making arrangements for me to stay somewhere else, and we'll have to reschedule now for late March, which is after the 4-month warranty. We couldn't be more furious. Acorn's horrible product and horrible service are matched only by the deep disrespect we feel from this company. Do not waste your money. The stairlift is shoddy. They won't come fix it. I don't know what your losses will be, but for us, if they don't resolve the issue, we'll be out nearly $11,000.

It is only a year and a half old. They spent $13,000 already and now they want to charge more!! I would not recommend this product to anyone I know for no other reason then. First, the lift is unreliable. I bought this lift in April 2019 and have had to call at least 7 times for service and had to have tech out 4 times, going on 5 now. Tech is unable to come out until this Wednesday Dec 11 which will be a 5 day wait. This is the only way my wife has to get in and out the house which is on the second floor. Acorn Stairlift doesn't care and is setting me up for paying for the very expensive warranty coming up in April 2020. I don't believe the response time will be any better after purchasing the extended warranty. So, save your money, do not buy a stairlift from Acorn!

I wrote a review last July, about 10 months since I bought my two stair lifts. While at the time I had some issues, as the review stated, they did finally fix them. I visited my second home in September and the stairs worked fine. They were used in October and worked fine. I arrived at the home December 3 and both stairs did not work. No lights at all. I called Acorn and at first they told me it would be 8 days until someone came out. I complained that this was crazy and they agreed to send someone out in two days.
That same day a sales person from Acorn called me and said they were very sorry about the numerous problems I have had and they would arrange that I would not be charged the $250 sales call charge or parts. I did not buy the yearly warranty because there is only one that really covers everything and for ONLY 25% of the price of EACH stair lift, I can get a year's warranty! So I was happy until I realized this was a sales call to get me to buy the warranty. Some nerve, the stairs have been consistently not performing, they are barely used, and all I have to do is pay for them again, every four years to get them fixed for free!
Anyway, the repair guy came out as promised. Both transformers were bad (they had already been replaced in July), both sets of batteries were bad (one set had already been replaced in July) and one control board was bad (it had also been replaced in July). The batteries die if the they do not get charged. They cannot get charged if the transformers break. I have outdoor stair lifts yet the transformers CLEARLY STATE "dry location only". So how many more times are they going to fail and AGAIN, when I visit this house, I HAVE NO STAIRS!!
I want to be fair BUT it seems to me all they want to do is sell stair lifts and then warranties. The outdoor stair lifts are $2400/each plus installation. The yearly warranty FOR EACH stair lift is $595. Whenever they come to fix them, they NEVER can figure out WHY they keep breaking, they just repair them. If I hadn't purchased the warranties when that sales person called, I imagine the repair bill would have been as much as what a stair lift cost.
The money is not the biggest issue. I bought these for a beach house so I could get up the stairs. I usually come for a week at a time. This is now the third time I do not have them for at least half my time here. Acorn does not have enough service people and at least from my experience, the chair lifts are very unreliable.

We had an Acorn stairlift installed at my parents house three years ago. Installer was good and it worked well. This year a gas spring at the bottom of the rail (rail section folds up out of the way of door) failed. I was able to remove it myself. When I contacted Acorn they told me there was no part number for that gas spring and we would need to replace the rail at a cost of about $1,000. I did some research. Called U.K and Scotland was able to track Acorn part number. When I contacted Acorn USA they would still not sell me the gas spring. Had the local rep contact them and the still would not sell it to them. I feel they do not want people to fix a simple gas spring but would rather upsell elderly and disabled people to replace a whole rail assembly. I feel that is very dishonest. Especially when they said there was no part number for that spring and I was able to find their own part number for it. This is why I would not recommend Acorn Stairlift.

You must know this before buying an Acorn stairlift. They do not stand behind their products because they are obsolete after 10 yrs! They do not make parts for any unit over 10 yrs old! They are exclusive, which means only their technicians will repair them. Their technician told me it would cost $300 to come out with parts extra. Not wanting to pay this outrageous cost I called Acorn in Vancouver again and they had another technician call me.
This second technician, upon hearing it was 15 years old stated, “Oh that was before my time... I dunno what is wrong.” Upon telling him the symptoms, he again said, “I dunno, we don’t make parts for one that old!” His attitude was appalling... definitely not good customer service! Obviously he could care less about my predicament. I called head office in Vancouver again and they said someone from head office in Ontario would call me as they will rectify my situation... so 2 weeks later and still no call, I called them.
They confirmed that it would still cost me $300 to have someone come out, as it is the standard price set by their UK branch for all their branches across Canada! Secondly they do not make parts for units over 10 years old... so if you need a new part be prepared to buy a new stairlift! So... their great customer service leaves me with a unit they may or may not be able to fix for a cost of $300, which I will on principle not pay. Meanwhile, my dear 92-year-old father is relegated to his suite downstairs until I buy a different brand stairlift from a different company.... I am disgusted with Acorn. Stay away from Acorn products is my advice!

I have a split level home and I wanted two stairlifts. I purchased 2 used ones about 2 years old. I installed them myself as I am mechanical. I had an issue with the first one. It needed two new batteries as it was very slow. Service call of $250.00 plus $67.00 per hr plus parts. The second one works but it needs a lower sensor to tell the unit it has reached its limit. I bypassed the sensor and told my wife to stop at the mark I made on the wall. A $10 or 15 dollar part. I called the company to purchase one and I was informed that the policy is to not sell replacement parts unless I first schedule a service technician at $250.00 and $67.00 per hr plus parts, It is a shame that one cannot purchase replacement parts without the need to have a service technician. I will be on the market for a used non workable stairlift for the parts that I may need for future repairs. By the way, I purchased these stairlifts for $400.00 and $450.00.

In less than two years we have had an expensive battery replacement and a couple of service calls. Each service call is $300. The battery should not have needed replacement for five years. We had to pay for the battery. One time when the unit stopped working, Acorn would not send out a service technician for five days, leaving my mom trapped. Once you buy Acorn you are locked into them for service. They will not sell parts to other repair people. I think they have strong marketing but I do not like the quality of the unit...keeps breaking down and each repair is very costly and you cannot get it repaired by anyone else.

My mom’s stairlift broke and she is unable to climb steps. It took 2 days before the service tech made a visit to replace the motherboard and I was told that I couldn’t keep the part that was being replaced. We had Acorn put in a lift several years ago and were satisfied. We had contacted them and had a salesman come out a few weeks ago. We were having 2 stairlifts installed both with 90 degree turns. We gave them a $2000.00 deposit and were contacted Wednesday that the install would be Thursday 7-25-19 and the check for the balance was to be $20,983.00. When the salesman was here a door at the top of the stairs leading to the basement needed to be expanded from the 26 inches to 30. We had a contractor come and open it up to 32 inches. When they called Wednesday to give us the total they also wanted proof the door had been expanded. I informed the caller it was completed to 32 inches and was told we had to take a picture with a tape measure and text it to prove the door had been fixed. Really?
As it turned out the installer was only able to install 1 lift yesterday and was to return Saturday for the other installation. Since the check was written as requested for both, the installer called his supervisor and was told we would have to write another check. We informed him the office was closed and another company check couldn't be written until Friday morning. He called his supervisor back and was told either they get the check to be paid in full for both lifts or a new check or to dismantle the lift so my wife would have no way to get upstairs. The installer was as in disbelief as much as my wife and I were. We had to end up writing a personal check to stop this confrontation from getting completely out of hand. No customer especially a returning customer should be subject to this kind of treatment. Needless to say another company will install the other lift and never again will I deal with Acorn.

We had our chair serviced and was told everything was fine but two weeks later, July 4th, the chair wasn't working perfectly. The technician came out that Friday to fix the "computer board" but the chair was making noises that it wasn't making before the service call.
The technician rest assured me that the chair is safe and that the noise will be fixed with another part. Hence, a different technician came out this morning and we are told another part is needed which needs to be ordered. Now the chair is UNSAFE to use. The part is being ordered through their NJ warehouse and won't arrive until sometime tomorrow late afternoon. Thursday the technician is totally booked and even though we offered to pay him overtime they refused. They are supposed to be coming out Friday at 3PM. Four days after his return, the chair got stuck at the top of the stairs. And it took 2 hours for the technician to help me get it going again by phone. He was totally lacking in any concern or empathy for the situation. He said there was no emergency service and did not know when someone could come out. My son, who lives 40 minutes away had to come to help the aide get my husband upstairs, and for the next 3 mornings and evenings I had to find people who could help the aides. This situation was deplorable, inexcusable and dangerous to both my husband and the aides How could any company tell a client who cannot walk that they have to wait from Friday p.m. to Monday afternoon for service. It is only a matter of time before this company is sued because a customer dies.
No-one from the regional manager to the man who sold us this incredibly expensive machine (12.000) showed any concern or even apologized. My advice to your readers is to do research and read the reviews prior to purchasing one. I purchased an Acorn Stair-lift for my husband and it was installed in January 2017. He used it for about 11 months. It worked nicely and he derived much pleasure during its use. He was unable to use it during the last six months of his life. Meanwhile the one-year warranty was about to expire. I began receiving calls from Acorn urging me to renew the warranty, to the point of harassment. The calls persisted even after I advised them of the seriousness of my husband’s illness, that he would probably never be able to use it again. I was asked why I ever purchased the stair-lift referring to it as “an expensive piece of equipment” that I should want to protect!
During one of these calls I was informed that the unit had to be used in order to keep the battery working. My husband was in a nursing home at that time, so I checked the unit and the battery was dead. A new battery cost $250.00 plus the cost of a service fee. Incidentally the batteries are not covered under the maintenance plan. I opted not to replace it. Sadly, my husband passed away in May 2018. I want the unit removed and can’t even give it away. Acorn would remove it for a fee of $750.00 and I have a quote from another company for a removal fee of $250.00. Quite frankly after spending almost $10,000 for the stair-lift, I resent having to pay anything for its removal!

Being told there was no maintenance but a free service call would be made in the first 12 months and that the company would contact us. Didn't happen. Service rep checked lift and told me the lift would require a NEW MOTHERBOARD $200.00 and NEW BATTERIES $200.00 and service fee of $165.00 all to be paid before he left. Totally shocked, how could that be in when only 2.5 years old. I rang the Acorn while rep was working and was told that is what had to paid $565.00, after insisting that was very unfair to charge for such big replacements on a unit only 2.5 years old, which had little use.
I googled searched and found others complaining of having similar issues. After some discussion they agreed to fit motherboard NO CHARGE, and I was to pay balance of $365.00. Luckily the rep did not have the required new batteries, so I paid the service call $165.00 on 27/5/19. He left having fitted motherboard free of charge and refitted the old batteries. He returned next day and fitted new batteries and when filling in the paperwork I reluctantly handed him my card for payment. To my surprise, he said that would not be required as the company had reconsidered and we do not have to pay for new batteries. :):) After much stress we want to thank Acorn for covering the cost of their faulty parts.

My parents, aged 84 & 87 purchased an Acorn Stairlift. They paid for two chairs. One for each level of their home. The chairs work wonderfully and provide great accessibility to their which they have lived in for almost 50 years. I do find it quite disappointing that ACORN is using predatory techniques to sell aftercare warranties. At no point during the sales process did the salesman mention a 1 year warranty on their merchandise. At no point during the sales process did the salesman mention the warranties were year to year.
My father asked me to look at the warranty renewal letter that Acorn sent them. I contacted ACORN and was assigned to a sales person named Mike. I asked him about the warranties and he offered 3 options. He mentioned that due to the fact there is a stairlift chair and 2 stair cases, my parts would be required to purchase separate warranties on each offering a discount on the second stairlift. I told Mike that we would probably select the best warranty, which can ONLY be purchased year to year. Mike forwarded options and I reviewed with my parents. Mike did mention the warranties can ONLY be purchased in full. NO payment plans. That means my parents are required to pay almost $900 upfront versus a monthly payment.
Mike opted to call my parents as follow up on his end. When he told my mother that she could only pay the warranty upfront, and she only had a 1 year warranty on her $6000 lift chair, she was very disappointed. She told Mike the salesman never mentioned short term warranties... Mike's response was quite typical "well it is all in your contract". After speaking with my Mother, Mike opted to call me and ask about how soon we wanted to pay for the warranty. It will not happen until after the end of the month as I cannot in good faith help him meet his quota. He can count his sales for next month. No worries, we are going to order the warranty as we really have no option at this time. We are going to bite into their tight budget to ensure they have accessibility and peace of mind.
Allow me to say the short sightedness of preying upon Elderly customers will not go unnoticed. Thanks to social media and my extensive network of friends who have elderly parents and relatives they are/will be caring for, I plan to share our experience with everyone I know, including, Yelp, review sight, etc... I would never allow any elderly customer to purchase such an expensive item without letting them know Acorn makes it real money with annual aftercare warranties. GOOD JOB GUYS!

We purchased our Acorn Stairlift - two levels - March 2018. We have had problems with it the last 4 months. It will stop when going up or down not once, not twice, but 4 or more times. You just have to wait sitting in the chair until it decides to move! I called the company to repair it. It took a week for them to come out, and then they wanted to charge me! I told them that we had only had it for 11 months.
The service tech came out and tinkered around for over an hour, then ask for two new batteries for the "clicker". I told him that we had changed it just a week ago. Still having problems with it, so I called today and raised cane with them. She said there would be a charge; and I told her I was not paying, because they hadn't fixed it in the first place, and if it wasn't fixed this time I would call the Consumer Protection Dept, at the Florida State Attorney's Office and let their lawyers take care of the problem. And they still pester you about their $500 per year service contract. If you don't use it during that year, then they charge you another $500! If I had known of the problems people were having with the Acorn Stairlift, etc., I would have never purchased it. I wouldn't advise anyone to purchase their lift.

We paid $15,500 8 weeks ago for a three level stairlift for our 91 yr old Alzheimer’s mother. It has been “playing up” the past few days. We did usual home fixes. Swapped out the remote batteries, rebooted. Today, it stopped mid staircase (very steep narrow stairs) with mom in the seat. Called customer service. Explained situation, while mom becomes increasingly distressed at being stuck, to be told 1 we aren’t holding the remote right (we had been until this week!) or that perhaps the batteries in the remote needed changed - she said this to me two minutes AFTER I told her we had changed them and it hadn’t helped. Went away and came back offering $250 service call out. I said, "What, it’s only 8- weeks old." She said service would call me back.
TWO HOURS later they called - I had gotten mom out barely and shuffled her downstairs on her bottom, but they didn’t know that - as far as they knew she was still stuck mid-stairway. So I’m stuck paying $250 for a service or shuffling a 91-year old upstairs on her bottom. Don’t touch these folks with a barge pole. Crap product and awful post purchase service.

Was told that this particular area was very busy and we would be put on a cancellation list. Was told probably needs new battery. No indication on chair that battery was low. Mom stuck in basement apartment. Unacceptable.

These products are not cheap but necessary. We have had the chairlift for less than a year and it's broken down 3 times. This time it was completely inspected and signed off on yesterday then today it tilts 45 degrees, nearly tosses my mother down the stairs and stops working. Best part is they can't get anyone out here to fix it for 5 days! This means my mother is stranded upstairs for 5 days. She cannot leave the house, she will be trapped in an emergency. This is dangerous and unhealthy for anyone psychologically to be trapped in their home. This is literally a life saving product and there is no urgency to get this repaired. The quality on something this important is terrifying and the complete disregard for the living conditions of the clients who keep them in business is abhorrent!

I have paid to keep the service agreement yearly, although I think $595.00 is steep as I required no service this last year. The bill showed up again recently for the same amount, and I paid it. Then early one evening I get a call saying I owe $55.04 more for taxes (never charged before and my state has had sale taxes for many, many years) and pushing me to give my credit card number right then. I declined and asked for paper. I get a questionable form. I called and received, after transfer to the finance department, answers I found to be questionable. I still wonder if I wasn't the "mark" for yet another scam on old people.

My 85 year old mother has a chairlift used regularly until she was admitted to hospital. It stopped working and I called to repair the problem $165 plus parts. I was not told to wait til it was fixed. I assumed it was fixed and came a few days later to find it wasn’t working. Called again to get it fixed saying I wouldn’t be there. They came and said they couldn’t enter because I wasn't there - apparently that was my fault! They came again to fix the same problem. I checked it later and it worked to get to the bottom of the stairs then stopped working. Whilst Mum was ok hospital it remained there. I let them know but I took 8 weeks to book in another call due to Mum's not being in the house.
Another call out and $165 and parts. I complained to multiple people about being charged again to fix the same problem. I was blamed for not using it regularly and explained I couldn’t use a broken machine, blamed for debris building up under the broken chair, blamed for leaving the broken chair at the bottom of the chairlift, blamed for not piling the broken chairlift. Excuses excuses excuses. I was told as it was out of warranty, and they do not guarantee their work on out of warranty chairs, if they needed to come out again in a couple of months I’d be charged again. DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!

I had a Stairlift installed in October so that I could access my upstairs where my bedrooms and bathrooms are located. I am pleased with it except for one critical function. I and my neighbors who were here the day the salesman came out told us that it would wrap around a wall upstairs but when installed it stops at the top of the stairs with my feet dangling over the last and next to last step of the staircase. I have to swing my left foot out to reach the landing to swivel the seat. It is hard for me to do especially if I have items in my lap. I have called my salesman twice with no return callback. I am quite frustrated at this point. The construction is dangerous.

We purchased our custom curved stairway stairlift from Acorn in February of 2018. When my husband came home from hospital he used it for 1 month then no longer needed it. We kept it in place in case of further need but he passed away in September of that year. Called Acorn to ask if they could assist with installation of this unit in another home with same staircase layout if needed. They offered no assistance whatsoever. Since that time I have learned that they not only will not support the stairlift if installed in another home but that they will also refuse to provide any parts or service for the stairlift if moved to another location. Would think twice before considering Acorn.

Purchased the chair and had it installed October 2016 for my dad. The chair worked great and the first issue didn't come up until July 2018. The chair stopped working completely and we had a technician come and repair it. Whatever he did got it working fine again but we were told that if that code came up again he would recommend replacing the motherboard (not sure this is the correct term). Had an annual service in October 2018, the batteries needed replacing already. We were originally told the batteries should last 3-4 years, it had only been 2 years. Then on New Year’s Eve 2018 in the afternoon the chair stopped working again, dead at the top of the stairs. Same code as July 2018. Since this was New Year’s Eve and we are on the West Coast and the number we call is eastern (three hours ahead) we were unable to reach the service department that day, and they were closed the next day.
Finally on Jan 2 we got a hold of someone. They were able to see the previous work order and we were told the part had to be ordered and it would take a week to get here. So my dad had to manage for just over a week before he could use the lift again. They replaced the part with an upgrade and didn't provide us with a new manual so when the chair started flashing a code our book indicated that it was a fault and to call for service immediately. Turns out the codes for this chair are different than the previous codes. We asked for a new manual and were told it would be six months at the earliest just to get a manual. Thank goodness for Google I was able to see what the codes indicated. Now just today (Jan 28) the chair stopped halfway up the stairs and took several minutes to get moving again, apparently this has happened before.
Will be calling for service tomorrow and hoping they can fix the issue before the chair breaks down again. Just glad we got the extended warranty, I definitely highly recommend the maximum extended warranty offered if you purchase this product. I would say that the people we have dealt with, everyone from the salesman to the technicians to the service people on the phone have been very nice and as helpful as they could be. Unfortunately based on reviews I have since read and the issues that come up I feel the products reliability is questionable. I keep wondering when it will stop working again. This is not the peace of mind I was looking for when we originally purchased the product.

We had an Acorn straight stairlift installed almost four years ago. The installation went fine, but the rail had to extend into the opening for our basement bathroom. We, therefore had to have a hinge installed, so the last few inches of rail could be lifted out of way. Recently, the lift began to make a loud popping noise at intervals along rail, and hinged extension became misaligned, so chair stopped at gap between upper rail and extension. We called customer support. Technician came out when he was supposed to, greased the rail and said that would cure the popping noise. So far, the noise seems to have gone away.
The technician began trying to sell us a service contract as soon as he entered, but denied he was doing it. He then proceeded to tell us about his life, multiple marriages and divorces as he intermittently tried to fix the problem with the hinge and continued to push the service contract. Was he fixing or trying to break the equipment. He loosened every support on the rail, banged on them with a socket wrench, even kicked the machine at one point and bounced forward and back in the chair with all supports loose. Finally, my wife pointed out an adjustment screw he had not touched.
When he loosened it, the rail aligned and the equipment worked ok. After a lot more talk, several e-mails and phone calls to the company, the consensus was we could not leave that screw loose even though tightening it drove everything out of alignment again. We would have to have a new hinge installed, buy a new stairlift, or live with the problem. The price of a new hinge kept coming down until it got to $450. My wife and I kept saying, "No" to the hinge until he finally gave up and started on the contract once again. Once again the answer was, "No".
Was he there to fix our equipment, sell us a contract, or break something important, so we would be forced to buy a new contract? Was he truthful about the adjustment screw? Can he do anything competently besides grease a rail? I don't know. I only know it cost us $274 and change to get us out of our house. Now I am wondering if I will get another bill for the time he spent spinning his fascinating stories.

A repairman would come to my home and said it was fixed, leave and same thing all over again. The office would say about the repairs he did. Last time he was here office said he repaired a wire in my chair. "The repairman never did nothing but rode my chair a couple times and left. He never touch any repairs". I have muscular dystrophy and can no longer walk or stand and was unable to get to the second floor of our home. I contacted Acorn Stairlifts in order to keep my independence and ability to get to our bedroom and roll-in shower. Was told by the sales person before purchase that everything was adjustable. Lift installed on 12/24/18. Talked to installer before work started that seat at the top had to be even with the wheelchair seat. He said that he would try to make it as close as possible but he was limited as to what adjustments he could make. Also, the seat, armrests, controls and foot plate cannot be changed or adjusted. Seems sales was misleading on the adjustability of the unit.
After install, Dan the installer had me try transferring to the unit downstairs to try it. Installer saw how hard it was to transfer downstairs to the lift, that my position on the lift was not comfortable and I was not able to transfer to the wheelchair at the top. Came back down and transferred back to main chair. Installer said that he understands that disabled people need to work out new things and that I should try a few times to transfer and to call the office if it was not going to work. My Daughter and her fiancé were present at this time and can confirm the installer’s statement to try it a few times to see if I would be able to transfer.
Called customer service on 12/27 12:02. Discuss having the lift removed and refunded because I am not able to make this work. Was told that my file would be sent to management. Called customer service on 12/27 4:15 because no one had called back. After 17 mins got disconnected and they called right back, was told that case had be sent to a manager after another 11 mins, but they were gone for the day. Called customer service on 12/28 at 10:35 and was told that the case was sent to management but they only discuss cases on Thursdays which would mean not until 1/3/19. At this point both people that I talked to said that the case did have notes indicating that we did not think this was going to work made by Dan the installer. Feeling like we were getting the runaround. Called customer service on 1/4/19 at 2:24 because still no phone call had been received. Was told that a manager would call back.
Received a call from Josh on 1/4/19 at 2:57. Discussed our problem with the lift and that I wanted the lift removed and refunded. Josh said that if the lift was not going to work the installer should have removed it the same day. I told him about our discussion with Dan the installer and that HE said to try the transferring to see if it was going to work and if not to call the office. Josh’s main reply was to keep repeating that all he can do is tell me Acorn’s policy that all sales are final.
Told Josh that this was not acceptable and that they needed to remove the lift because it was only taking up space by the front door, hallway and stairs for something that I could never use. Josh asked how much I weighed and if I had discussed with Dan the installer what we would have to do if this did not work. I told him my weight (100 lbs. or less) and that we would look at putting in an elevator/platform lift. Josh asked if there was someone in the home that could help me with using the stair lift and I said yes, most times, but the whole idea of this was to keep my independence and ability to get up and down stairs.
It turned out that I don’t think Josh is even a manager because he said that he was going to discuss this with Dan the installer and then with management and would call back. I feel that the moment that the installer said to try it for a couple of days and if it did not work to call customer service that it voided the companies right to say all sales are final and we are stuck with it.
1/10/19 – Company called and agreed to refund our purchase but is charging 1,275.00 as a restocking fee. This amount seems to be excessive but when asked they would not lower it. Since we had disputed the original credit card charges, they wanted us to withdraw the dispute. I discovered that if we were to do that, we would have no other available options if they did not refund the difference as agreed. I think they know this and that is why they wanted us to withdraw it. We are not and Acorn will have to represent the charges. They will not remove the lift or make the refund adjustment until the original charges have been re-processed which could take over 30 days. We are not happy with this arrangement. We felt that if we did not agree to the 1,275.00 that they would do nothing and we might have to go to court to get this resolved.

Be aware that on the 130 Straight Stairlift, it doesn't have the Standard Park function where the footrest is level with the top step, where both feet are level with the landing. You have to use your feet to push yourself around to a 90 degree angle to step off the chair onto the landing. This can be a problem if you have foot or leg problems. The curved stair lift apparently has this function. Otherwise I was very pleased with the chair and its installation.

Acorn Stairlifts has to be the worst company I have done business with. My mother purchased a stairlift for her husband who could no longer get around due to cancer. Unfortunately, his condition worsened two weeks after the stairlift was installed and he ultimately passed away about a month later. The stairlift was hardly used given the circumstance and had only been installed for a month. When I explained the situation to Acorn and asked if we could return the stairlift or assist with reselling to other interested customers since it was in brand new condition, Acorn refused to assist, would not allow us to return the stairlift and only offered to disassemble and move it to another room.
After $5k wasted and hours of frustration dealing with their lack of customer service, we decided to allow the disassemble and sell it on our own. Apparently even that was too much for Acorn to handle. We had to wait over a month for the disassemble. The technician showed up over an hour late for the appointment with no phone calls or notice and then when I called Acorn to complain they took zero accountability and tried to put it back on me that the technician was within us two hour window, when a window was not given when the appointment was scheduled. This company is greedy, heartless and has no empathy for its customers and what they are going through. Once they get your money that’s it.
You would think in the industry that they are serving where most clients are elderly or facing a great medical circumstance which is the reason why they need the stairlift, that Acorn would be more empathetic and understanding and work to lighten the load of their clients. Instead, they only add more insult to injury and their actions show they are only concerned with collecting a check. Sad but definitely a learning experience. I would not recommend doing business with this company. Give it to one that actually cares and shows so with their actions.

There were two things that impressed me about my experience with the Acorn salesperson. Firstly, she was very well trained, and technically knew her product from top to bottom. I could ascertain this due to my past experience. She also believed in the product she was selling whole heartedly. Michaela **, recognized immediately that my wife Nancy was physically in a bad way (three major knee surgeries, and living on our second floor). I closely observed her as she took measurements and other requirements to see if we could accommodate a stairlift in our 1937 built home. Lastly, after a successful outcome, we talked. Most salespeople are usually anxious to complete their sale and move on. Michaela not only took the time to answer all our questions, but also get to know each other on a personal basis. It was a lovely experience. The product itself was installed quickly and is operating far above our expectations.

About 3-4 years ago, we bought an Acorn exterior Stairlift for a vacation rental house that we own in North Carolina. Acorn was the only company that we could find that would install an exterior unit here. Nothing fancy, our installation was straightforward with no turns. We bought it primarily to allow our aging mothers to visit the house; they have both passed now. We also thought it a benefit to allow our disabled guests access to our home which is ten feet off the ground to protect it from flooding. It is imperative that it work flawlessly ALL THE TIME! It has NEVER worked flawlessly.
Imagine what would happen if a mandatory hurricane evacuation order is given for the island and the chairlift fails... Call the company and be told there is no one to service the thing or you will have to wait 8 days? Your only hope then is a 911 call to an already overburdened Fire and Rescue company or scoot down the stairs on your butt. I visit the house several times a year to do routine maintenance. It NEVER fails that I have to work on the chairlift to get the thing to work. NEVER. I clean and lubricate the gear track to prevent stalls each time I visit the house. I test the unit multiple times, once I get it going again, to insure it is working.
The first time it failed, the unit was about 6 months old, I called the company. No help there; they do not service their own product. I called the installer and he told me that he had severed ties with the company because they treated him poorly. He eventually agreed to come over; charged me 500 bucks for about 10 minutes work. The problem is a poorly designed braking system that prevents the chair from moving if an overspeed is detected. This can be caused by the user moving on the chair while in motion or any number of other conditions. Truly folks, you are better off sitting on your butt and scooting down the stairs one at a time. Acorn Stairlifts should not be in business and should certainly not get your business. It is a pathetic product with NO CUSTOMER SERVICE that treats its installers poorly. They prey on disabled customers who have few, if any alternatives, and market an outdated, poorly designed, dangerous, product.
I wish that this review would do me some good...it will not. I wish that the Better Business Bureau or Consumer Affairs would get involved and somehow sanction Acorn. They will not and Acorn will continue to prey on unsuspecting, disabled people who have little if any money to spare (or waste) and few alternatives to this dishonest company. I would give this company MINUS 5 stars if that were possible.

Warning: DO NOT BUY THIS CHAIRLIFT. I would never recommend Acorn Stairlifts to anyone. Our chair stopped halfway upstairs with my 92 yr old father on it. When I called was told they sell, but have no service department. The customer (Dis)service department has to email the installation team not call over to them to see if they will send someone out, but they typically don’t have a service crew. If there is an installation crew in the area they may be able to come by, “but they typically don’t do repairs”. I had to call the fire department to rescue my dad. The chair was intended that he could spend his last days in his house, now he is prisoner, he can’t go up or down, just needs to stay on one floor. How do you explain that to a person with dementia? And the caregiver I was trying to hire now doesn’t want the job because there is no way to move him from bedroom to the main floor.
Whoever heard of a company that specializes (targets) the elderly and infirm and has no service support for their product? I wasn’t involved in making the decisions to purchase this chairlift but I hope these hugely negative reviews warn at least some people off from wasting their money and endangering themselves or loved ones. I am now searching for anyone who sells any brand of chairlift who may be able to help me.
The problem appears to be that even though it is parked on a charging port, it is not charging. Cranking it to the charging port resulted in a small enough charge to move it a foot or two. According to the manual, if the batteries run down all the way they won’t hold a charge and need to be replaced. You need an Acorn Engineer to replace them, and they don’t have one. Unless we get the charging ports fixed, it will just happen again anyway. And at $250 just for them to walk in the door (assuming they find a technician), it will almost be like buying the whole thing all over.

Both of my parents are in their 80s and my father uses a walker to get around. He can't climb stairs so we get an Acorn Stairlift installed. When it works it's a great device. It allows both of my parents to stay in their 2 story home. But that's where the issue comes in. The unit has been unreliable for the under 3 years it has been installed. The first year it was under warranty and had to be serviced a couple of times. It stopped just before the top or bottom of the stairs and wouldn't move.
Calling service always gets a polite person who try to be helpful but nothing can ever been done over the phone so a service tech has to come to their home to fix the lift. A few times it would take a couple of visits by different techs and each always blamed the previous repair person for not knowing how to fit it. The service techs are polite and try to help as much as they can with repairs taking from a few hours to a couple of days. Some of the service people have told us that the units have lots of problems. I don't think they work directly for the company but are independent workers trained by Acorn.
Service isn't offered on weekends. The last time the lift failed was on a Friday and we were told that Tuesday would be the earliest a service person could come out. As their house doesn't have a shower or bed on the main floor, four days is unacceptable. The second year we paid for extended warranty which I would say is a must. It's expensive but cheaper than service calls that can range from a minimum of $250 (to walk in the door) to over a $1,000 to fix something that has been fixed before.
Many times when the unit stops working it will beep every few seconds until the battery dies in a day or two (if you unplug it or it will continue to beep forever). The beeping drives my parents crazy like a dead battery in a smoke alarm. Techs have said in earlier units you could turn off the unit and the beeping would stop but in newer units it keeps beeping until repaired. Top Tip: If you get the beeping, you can open the unit and unplug one of the batteries to stop the beeping. Acorn can't tell you this as it could be dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. It finally got to the point that my parents decided they can't live in their home of over 40 years and are going to move full time to Florida.
Reading other reviews it sounds like a few people have been lucky and got a unit that doesn't malfunction. That was not our case and not what Acorn's own service workers told us is common. They spent over $10,000 to have the unit installed and a few thousand more for extended warranties and out of warranty repairs. I'm happy to answer any questions about our experience with the Acorn Stairlift.

GOOD GRIEF... We have practically nothing but trouble since we bought it in 2015. Currently it is in pieces in the spare bedroom. I had recent knee surgery and hip replacement. My mother is 88 years old and had recent hip replacement. We bought it because we needed it to do something other than sit in pieces and having to wait 5 days pending for anyone to come fix it. We've had so many service calls since we bought it that I believe we have a novel started. This is unacceptable. We should have shopped around first...
