I turned my oven to preheat for a baking dish. When it preheated, I opened the oven and my initial thought and reaction was the oven was on fire. But looking closer, I realized the heating element was sparking uncontrollably. There was obscene amount of smoke, setting of fire alarms, and naturally scaring the crap out of my younger cousin and myself. She didn't know what was going on, and from what she saw, lots of smoke and blinding sparking, she kept asking me if the oven was going to blow up. I threw baking soda on it, to no avail. The sparking just kept traveling along the element, and I decided I needed my extinguisher.
Well, after several minutes of this, it finally stopped, but broke the element in one or maybe two places. A rep from GE responded to my concern, and said that that is what happens when the element comes to the end of its life. And he had mentioned that when this does happen, it only lasts for a few seconds and may smoke a little. Not for me. It went on for minutes and there was enough smoke to set off fire alarms. I thought it was just my oven, but looking online, I realized this is a common problem and has been a continuous problem for many. GE needs to take responsibility for this. It needs to be on recall.

I purchased a double wall oven, Model # JKP55 in Nov. 2007 and at less than 2 years old, the surface around the touch pad area is coming loose, bubbling and wrinkled. It looks terrible and will hinder us in selling our home in the near future. I'd like to see this problem fixed or the touch pad area replaced.

My 1 year old daughter was severely burned by Hotpoint Oven door. The oven door was closed and in use and the space between the oven door and back of the oven has too wide a gap that an adult can get most of hand inside. She has blistered 4 of her fingers due to this gap. She was able to get her hand between that gap. Now, I have to worry every time I cook that the same will happen again. I will never buy Hotpoint ovens or recommend it due to this issue. Consequences: Severe burns on her fingers. I called emergency after hours hotline and 2 trips to the doctor.

We purchased a GE combination convection oven and microwave (Model # PT970b0M1BB, Serial # MM6135840). The convection oven has never worked right, and after 4 service calls it has still not been repaired. The first time they came out, they said there was nothing wrong. The second time, they said it was the temperature sensor and/or the control board, but they didn't have the parts. The 3rd time, they replaced the parts, but the oven still wasn't working after the repair. The 4th time they said it was the lower burner, and they didn't have that part either. They told me it would take another week. I called the GE complaint department to have the part sent overnight, but the service technician still won't come back to (allegedly) fix it until next week. Apparently, GE doesn't teach their techs to properly troubleshoot or test their work.

We purchased a stove with a convection oven as well as a grill on the top. In November 2008, a month later, we contacted GE for a problem related with the stove. 3 months later, it’s for the other issue - stove. Four times the technician has come to my home to repair that appliance. Now, the top grill does not work or simply the flame is so small that we cannot even grill a piece of bacon or an egg. The gas goes out but the flame does barely or disappears, letting the gas out (smelling gas). The technician showed up yesterday - nothing can be done. Besides all those problems, we have a rust issue. The machine is only 9 months old. All my stainless appliances are fine, except the GE stove. GE’s customer service told me that it is ok to have rust and this is only a cosmetic issue and so they do not feel responsible at all. As for the others issues, I was told that they won’t exchange the machine and only send a technician over and over.
I feel unsafe and very unhappy with the new stove we have used for only one month. We cannot resell the machine to anyone since we, unlike GE, are responsible people and would not let someone dealing with smelling gas or others issues. GE did offer me a discount of 5% discount for a better machine, but will not take this dangerous garbage back. I am very dissatisfied with GE’s poor warranty. They have miserable quality for a high price. If this is the way GE is doing business, I will not support this anymore. We are looking for a new stove that will work without to have a technician every month or so and a company who stays behind serious customers. We don’t want a company who is selling poor products with a technician. This is not the company I will recommend to anyone.

I installed my new GE cooktop (Model: PP945BM2BB / Serial: DS700385Q) into my newly-remodeled kitchen. The cooktop came without a protective film during shipment. The manual said to remove the film before cooking, but none was to be found. The cooktop was installed during March 2009. Around the end of May, I noticed a scratch on the surface of the cooktop. At the time, all I had done was put a baking pan of toast on the top of the cooktop.
I contacted the company and they sent out a representative to look at the scratch. He was rude when he visited and told me that since I knew so much, I could fix the problem myself. The warranty for said cosmetic repairs was up after 30 days. Mine was approximately 60 days old. But, he called another service representative for the company and she talked with me. She said that I had placed an aluminum baking pan on top (which I wasn't supposed to do).
This pan is cookware. And probably, after I placed the cookware there, it scratched the surface of the cooktop. After many calls and letters, the company is refusing to repair the glass surface of the cooktop. They are stating that it is my fault and not theirs. I can buy a new glass top at my expense if I desire.

I have a GE range and hood. The hood broke and needed a new switch. GE no longer makes this switch. Trying to obtain repairs or a replacement hood has proven to be a major chore. There is no way to get a human being through the various numbers provided for consumer service. Even if I dial a number given to me by the repairman (who was the only GE person who was any good, by the way), or tried to return a call to GE left on my answering machine, I get a notification to call a different number.
When I finally reached a human being, she said she couldn't help me but would transfer my call to a real live person who could help. The phone rang, and then, "Your call could not be completed as dialed. Please dial your call again." Since I had no idea what number I had been transferred to, I could not redial. I gave up. I think I am getting a rebate on my service contract, and I have an appliance dealer coming out to see if what he has will fit in the old hood slot. But I'm not sure if this is the correct situation, since I cannot return GE's call from July 28.
The case number is **. I would appreciate hearing from someone at GE who can straighten this out. If you have to leave a message, please leave a workable number and an extension. Since I do not want to replace the range, I'm stuck with getting a GE hood. However, as other appliances wear out, e.g. washer and dryer, dishwasher, there are other companies out there. It's obvious that GE isn't interested in keeping my business.

The oven glass exploded. In no form is the truth being stretched. We were in another room when we hear a huge crash. When we went into the kitchen, we found where the oven door had exploded, shooting glass to the other side of the kitchen and further into the utility room. Had someone been standing in front of it, there would have been serious injuries. The oven was purchased on December 31, 2007 and the door busted in July 2009. The oven was only 1 year and 7 months old. The oven had not been on all day long when it shattered. I had used the ceramic cook top for about 15 minutes about 3 hours earlier. It was completely cooled down when it exploded. The glass lay on the floor and popped around like popcorn in a microwave. Pretty scary!
The GE serviceman came out in a week and looked at it; they (GE) wanted to charge me $79.95 for that. The part was only $50.00 and the labor was $150.00 to install. GE products are only good against manufacturer defects for 1 year. I do not think that the glass on an oven door should shatter like that at all. GE was not very helpful with covering the cost until I got upset and threatened them to go to the papers and I still had to pay for the labor to have the glass installed, which was $150.00. It was a constant argument with the customer service rep and they forced me each time to ask for their supervisor. I believe this product should be recalled before someone is seriously injured. I will never purchase another GE product because of the way customer relations handled this! Furthermore, the GE serviceman was so embarrassed in the way the company handled the case! That should say something!

GE free standing range model #JBP35DOK4WW - The top surface element arc flashed and melted through element, shooting sparks and a bright white flash. It ruined the drip pan and burned completely through the surface element. Smoke caused by the meltdown caused two smoke detectors to alarm. The stainless steel pan was on burner at the time with a medium setting. Had anyone grabbed the pan handle at that time, they may have been electrocuted, seriously injured or even blinded by the flying slag. The burner and drip pan are ruined. The top of the stove is pitted by arc flash. We installed an alternate element and it does not work. My wife is traumatized and fears using the stove. I feel the public should be made aware of this very dangerous condition. I have wired several homes and know this stove can be fatal.

We purchased this unit in March of 2007 (manufacturing date was 2006). A couple of weeks after we bought the oven, I was baking cookies and I heard a loud pop. The inner glass of the oven door had shattered. A service professional did come out after a couple of weeks, said he'd repaired several like this and ordered the glass. A couple of weeks later, he came and replaced it. Now, in July of 2009, the microwave suddenly just stopped working. The inside light and the fan work, but the turntable will not turn and the microwave does not generate heat. My husband researched this and it looks like the magnetron.
Unfortunately, the service call is $70 just to have someone come out. Another $60 an hour for the repair, plus the cost of the part. This appliance should have lasted for many years and because the microwave is part of the oven combo, it cannot be replaced on its own. We are going to be out $130 before we even pay for the part.

In June 2009, I turned on the oven cleaner of my GE Spectra stove. An hour or so later, I was upstairs and heard a popping noise. I went downstairs to investigate, but I saw nothing out of place. Later, when I opened the oven to clean out the residue, I saw that the inside glass was in several pieces. GE wants to charge me to have someone come out and determine what kind of repair needs to be made and then charge me for parts and labor on top of that. Repairing the oven is not in my budget right now, so I have no use of the oven. What really bothers me is that the glass should have been designed and made to withstand the tremendous heat generated by the oven cleaner. The stove, while not under warranty, is not so old and I have only had to clean the oven on two other occasions since November 2006.

Two days ago, the GE Spectra stove that I purchased in 2002 caught fire when my wife was baking pizza. Inside, the oven lower heating element caught fire. It had a sparkler effect while it burned. The fuses were blown off and the fire eventually broke the lower heating element into big three pieces and small burned metal pieces were stuck to the sides of the oven. When we tried to open the overheated oven door to let the smoke out, the one side that holds the door broke off. We have called GE services and we are awaiting for them to come and fix this problem. We have two kids that constantly make pizza, my wife bakes a lot.
This is a seven years old stove, accident like that should never happened. There is at least four stories like mine posted on internet that I'm aware about. What are we waiting for? For someone to have his or her house burn to the ground or maybe for a life to be lost? GE should issue a recall for this stove long before 2009. In fact, in 2004, a consumer reported the same problem like mine to GE. Nothing was done in the five years. No recall, no warning were sent out to consumer that have purchased this stove. Please follow this matter, your response will be greatly appreciated.

On 2006, I bought on Best Buy a GE Profile range, GE Profile refrigerator and GE Profile microwave. Just after the year, the range do not power off correctly. It stays on when the controls indicate it is off. The hot cooktop indicators remain on too when the range is off. This is very dangerous. I called GE and they only said the warranty expired and I did not buy the extended warranty.
The refrigerator freezer does not freeze. Thank God I did not get away with the old 12 years old GE refrigerator. The microwave is not working at all. Looks like the new GE top of the line Profile appliances are made only to last a year, at most 2 years and that’s it, you are done, or you have to buy an extended warranty, that some time cost 1/3 or more of the price of the appliance.
I promise myself that I will not buy or recommend GE products until GE takes responsibility of repairing my appliances. Extended warranty plans are not the solution. The solution is to make again appliances that will last for a long time, with a minimum of 5 years warranty. I believe what happened to GE is the same like GM. Appliances makers from other countries will take over because of the bad quality of GE appliances. The malfunction of the range represents a risk. The malfunction of the refrigerator makes me spend more money, when it is supposed to be Energy Star compliance.

My stove caught fire. I called GE recall line and was told that I would get a new stove that was like mine. A tech came out and told the support person on the phone that it had caught fire and we need a new stove. It took two weeks to line all of this up and with little help from GE. The delivery people unpacked the new stove after the one that caught fire was loaded. Then I was pulled aside and shown the order while the other person finished unpacking the new stove. It looks just like the old one but it is not. It is the cheapest model they make.
I had a convection oven. This one does not, it runs on 110 volts and will cost me more to run. My old one was 240 volts. I got back on the phone with GE and was told you let the delivery people leave it so it is yours. Now I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told they had all gone home, but just before that, she said, “Let me talk with my supervisor.” So she lied again. I feel GE has screwed me good, but I am still going to fight this.

I purchased a new built-in single oven from GE approximately 3 years ago. There were numerous problems that I had, including the temperature not being accurate, strong smell of gas including a headache and smoke pouring out of the oven without anything in it but it was on. The servicemen came out about six different times and finally fixed the gas smelling problem. According to them, they put in all new parts. I continued to ask for a new oven because I was frightened. Finally, they appeared to have fixed it without installing a new oven. Today, June 13, 2009, I was baking some coffee cakes for a graduation party. They were being baked one at a time. Both were burned at the bottom even though the second one, I raised the rack to a higher level. After that happened, I decided to put into the oven a fairly expensive thermometer and set the oven fro 375 degrees. The outcome was the oven heated to 430 degrees. Thus, the reason for the burning. For approximately one year, the oven appeared to work fine. Now I am faced again with repair bills for an oven that is obviously faulty.
I would really appreciate any help you can give me or anyone you can direct me to. This oven is not very old and has been a problem since day one. I am retired and cannot continue to pay for repairs on an oven that is not very old. Can you help me with this situation? In the past, I have had and still do a number of GE appliances and have not had a problem. This one is really horrible however. If you need specific dates, I think I may be able to provide them. I was working at the time and had to take time off of work each time they came out, which I believe were six repairs!

GE Profile Stove, model number JS90050k458. Liquid ran down between the oven door inside glass and outside glass. There is a space at the top of the oven door. Poor design! There is no spill safety as in this case to catch overflow of food cooking on top of the stove. My stove is new and the door glass cannot be cleaned since it is inside the glass. I spent 3 hours trying to contact someone to help other than hiring someone to take the oven door apart. The person at the above number hung up on me when he could not give me any answers. I’m very disappointed in GE and we have many appliances, and to make matters worse, my husband has stock in GE. I won't purchase any GE products again as far as I am concerned.

We bought a Hotpoint in February for a new kitchen in our cabin. We used it once in March. We were putting cabinets in and wasn't there at the time full time yet. It wouldn't work. We called the warehouse, they gave us a service tech. We called him. He came out and said he would have the part (brand new stove?) in seven days. He never called. Three weeks went by, we called the warehouse again. She said Mark wasn't in and said she would call service. She called back a few days later and said the part was back ordered and be in next week. Three weeks went by, no one called us, we had to call them. Now, we're talking to the manager. He says he has to talk to the GE rep. All we wanted was to trade it for a stove with no LED lights to work it and buy a GE microwave. No one has called. It's been over a week. Mind you, this has been going on since the beginning of March! I have not been able to cook anything since March. It is June now. I will have to go to BBB. I have no other alternative. No one will work with us. I paid almost $500 for an appliance we can't use!

We remodeled the kitchen with all new stainless steel appliances. I selected the GE Profile glass top slide in range, which is great - I love the glass top gas. But what you don't hear about is the fan that continually runs to keep the digital controls cool. This blows hot air out the vents continually while the oven is on, and it is even worse when the door is opened to remove cooked items. The hot air blasts the room. In Arizona, this was a poor choice - I will not be cooking in the summer. There is no one to relay this information, and I think it would be important to a lot of people. It is worse when the convection is on. They say that the fan shuts off when the door is opened, but that is 30 sec after the door is opened, enough time to blast the room with very hot air. I am not happy with the way this product is engineered.

I recently bought a new Adora gas cooktop and oven. The oven has a horrible chemical burn-off problem! I have looked online and many other people have been complaining about how unacceptably long it takes for the oven to stop emitting a strong chemical stink. After cycling the oven to 500F and back several times, we decided to try a self-clean cycle to try to burn off whatever toxic chemicals are still stuck in this thing. This caused the oven (no food was ever cooked in it) to emit enough smoke to leave yellow smoke residue on the top of the door and burner knobs.
I complained to GE and got this response: A blanket of fiberglass insulation is used around the oven cavity of GE ranges. An acrylic binder is used to hold the fiberglass insulation blanket together while it is handled during assembly of the range. This binder will decompose at elevated temperatures, resulting in the emission of odor and fumes the first few times the oven is used.
The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the insulation, which contains emission levels and occupational exposure limits for the decomposition products of the acrylic binder. These limits are established based on throat and eye irritation; however, some people are more sensitive to the fumes than others and are irritated by the low-level emissions from a range. In these cases, it is advisable to establish some kind of ventilation during the first few uses of the oven, such as opening a window or turning on an exhaust fan (see Use & Care Guide). Since the MSDS is written in the context of occupational exposure, it may be difficult to understand or apply to a household environment.
The emissions from GE ranges have been fully disclosed and reviewed at many levels, and we are certain that they do not pose a health hazard to people. However, if you have concerns or questions relating to emission levels contained in the MSDS, you are encouraged to contact your personal physician for clarification on how they may affect you specifically.
What?! I'm supposed to ask my doctor about their fuming insulation? Imagine if this were a car. We recommend that you drive with the windows open for the first 500 miles of operation. The customer should not be the one left to deal with the horrible-smelling side effects of GE's manufacturing process. Especially from a company that touts itself for its green products. I, for one, would gladly pay extra for a stink-free product!

My problem is deciding whether or not to repair this GE piece of crap oven for the ignite burner or buy a new one. The piece of equipment is just $25-30 bucks, but these repair people want $75 just to show up and tell me what I already know; then tack on another $200 if I let them fix it. A comparable new oven will cost around $600-750, not including the installation fee. The only thing I can decide on is the fact that I don't want to feed dead horse - meaning what else may go wrong with this GE junk that has no warranty. Also, after reading all the complaints in this thread, I definitely will not be buying another crappy GE oven. My previous oven was a Maytag and I had it longer than this one, but it never went down. Since purchasing my GE XL44 Self -Cleaning Gas Range in 1995, we have had the same part (WB2X9154: igniter broiler/oven) replaced in 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2008 (Oct 17). For the privilege of having GE repair its products we have had to pay them $711.90 for all these service calls. That represents about $50 less than the original cost of the oven. To think that because of one part we have basically bought another oven that will break in about a year. I called the GE Consumer Service line and was told that they would investigate why the part breaks in our oven.
When I asked about having some sort of discount on this constant replacement, the response was that GE did not charge me for the replacement part. I should be happy with only paying $185 today. Had the part not been under GE's incentive? warranty the cost of the house call would have been $290. That would have pushed the total paid for repairs on the oven over the cost of the oven. We bought 3 GE appliances, April, 2003, an Advantium microwave, GE Profile electric stove and Profile dishwasher. We paid more for the Profile brand thinking we would get a good product. The first thing that happened was the black lettering on the control panel started coming off. This was a year and a half after we bought the appliances. GE told me I must be cleaning the control panel wrong! GE considered this cosmetic so they would not pay for it. I am so careful cleaning these appliances - that was not true.
We had to buy another control panel for $100 and guess what, it now has the lettering coming off again! The next thing that happened is the stainless steel on our dishwasher was, get this, rusting. We are talking stainless steel. We found out at an appliance store their stainless steel comes out of China. China does not have the same grade of stainless steel as in the US so guess what, it can rust. We had a repairman come out and told us to use WD40 on it as since it's cosmetic, GE won't replace it.
The next thing that happened is the fan in our convection oven was extremely noisy. We had to have a technician out for that and the bearings were shot. This was at Thanksgiving time. A part was ordered and the first one that came UPS to us was defective. It was ordered again and the repairman came back out and installed it. This part was incredibly cheaply made. Now we are using the convection part of the stove rarely. Now our Advantium microwave has condensation in the window on the door that should not be there and it was making a noise (like a fan problem) this week. Also, guess what, the black lasered writing is coming off the front of it as well just like the stove panel.
We were told by the repairman you really should get a warranty since the appliances are electronic. Hey, how about a better warranty on cosmetic damage. The warranty is only a year and I think GE knew the problems that could arise with the materials used and limited their warranty on purpose. I am reading GE is made in Mexico since 2000. We needed a clothes dryer and made a point to not buy GE. We will need a refrigerator, and it will definitely NOT be a GE product. No more GE products of any kind for us!

We purchased our GE Oven, Model JGBP30BCA6WH on 8/16/01. On 10/17/03, we had to have the ignitor replaced in the oven for $181 (Oven cost was $699). The original ignitor's warranty was only one year. New ignitor (WB2X9154) now has a 5 year warranty.
It is now September, 2008 and the ignitor has again gone bad. Of course, GE will replace the $30 part but it is still over $150 to install the part. GE does not feel like this is out of the ordinary and will not do anything. We do not believe we should pay for the same repair twice in 5 years. The oven is only 7 years old.

I purchased a GE Electric Range Model JBP80W H3WW March, 2007. I used the self cleaning feature for the first time on Sept 21, 2008. The glass in the oven door shattered during the procedure. I called the service department. I gave them all the details of the problem including serial number and details of the broken glass. I had to take a vacation day from work to wait for the service person. When he arrived he did not have the required part and told me that I would have to pay for the part and labor.
I called GE and after much discussion they agreed to send the part no charge but would not waive the labor cost. There are three glass panes in the door. The one that broke was the middle pane. The one sandwiched between the outer and inner pane. This is a part that should never break. The fact that it did during the first use of the self cleaner points to an obvious defect in the product. Again this was the first time I used the self clean feature.
Incredibly GE would not waive the $232 service charge to fix something that is a defect in the product. I was told I was out of luck because I had the misfortune to not run the self cleaning feature a few months earlier during the warranty period. In addition, despite the detail I gave to the service scheduler, the technician arrived without the part. Now I have to take yet more of my valuable vacation time to wait again to get the defective part fixed. GE Cares is their service slogan. Cares about what? Certainly not customer satisfaction or the integrity of their products. I too am a former GE customer.

The local GE appliance dealer installed a GE Profile electric stove in the fall of 2006. This past week, while baking a roast, the heating element in the oven exploded and flaming pieces of metal fell from the heating element and, fortunately, landed within the oven compartment. An examination of the element showed that about three inches of it had broken apart and there was metal, that at one point had been molten, despoted on the fractured parts of the element and the element itself near the fractures.
The appliance repairment from Southwest Appliance replaced the element and stated that he had seen this type of failure in several other ovens. The cost of a new element. The labor charge was cut by 50%.

I am emailing you this for my mother. It is her information above. She purchased a GE stove about 2 years ago. She has cleaned the oven a few times in the past 2 yrs. One time she used it, it got so hot that the steam must have leaked out the top of the stove and burnt the underneath of where the knobs to work the stove are that overhangs a little. I think this is a safety hazard and maybe could've started a fire. They said she must have spilled something in the oven and not cleaned it up and thats why is did this. They will not cover the replacements under warranty and she has to pay for parts and repair I think. Have you had any other complaints with GE self cleaning ovens?

While my family was stationed overseas, our home was rented. Our range was replaced with a Hotpoint Range by our renters. Since we have returned we have discovered that the range knobs have no lock on them. This makes it very easy for gas leaks. By washing the stove the knobs can move and if not noticed gas will leak. You can also just lean on the range to reach something in a cabinet above the range causing the same problem. The knobs move so easily that nearly anything can move them.
My husband has had a serious head injury and has short term memory loss. He frequently forgets to check as he leaves the kitchen and the gas has run until I have smelled it in another room. I also take care of my grandchildren and a sister who has had a stroke. I can't count the number of times I have smelled gas only to discover one of the knobs were moved even slightly. This is a disaster waiting to happen. We do not have the money to replace the range in these hard economic times. I feel there should have been a recall on this range but have found it too difficult to find on the computer. Can you Help?

I recently purchased the dual fuel General Electric stove with a gas cook top and an electric oven. The oven is terrible. It takes approximately 30 minutes to reach the correct temperature and the recovery time is so slow after opening the oven that it is nearly impossible to bake cookies or layer cakes correctly.
I have had the GE repairman out and he admitted that every complaint I had was legitimate and that's just the way the oven is calibrated! The only way I can get the oven to maintain the correct heat with some degree of accuracy is to stand by and change the heat mode to convection roast so it forces the oven to go back on. Then of course you must stand by and change it back to bake after a few minutes. I also tried to use the bake/convection mode for muffins and they were all wind blown and brown on top like a rooftop! You also need to be very careful if you try to wipe your floor under the front of the stove because the edges are razor sharp and cut your hand. The repairman admitted that they are always required to wear heavy gloves when working on these stoves because of all of the sharp edges at the bottom!
I have had 3 other GE stoves and loved them but this one is a disaster and I wish I could return it! I absolutely hate it and I'm forced to use my 20+ year old stove in my basement if I'm baking a cake which is delicate and needs to be baked at the correct temperature! It's really unfortunate that you no idea of what you're getting when you buy an appliance and have no recourse to return it. Now I'm stuck with it for years.
The damage that has resulted is all the money I've wasted trying to bake cakes and cookies that have failed because the oven is so inaccurate. I have also cut the top of my hand numerous times trying to clean the floor under the front of the stove! I'm so aggravated by this horrible stove that I'm sure my blood pressure has increased as well!

Two nights ago I went to bed with my two small children and my husband. At about 11:30 PM, luckily, I went to my kitchen to get a drink, only to find my GE oven on, hot, even though ALL KNOBS WERE TURNED OFF. Had I not been thirsty at that time, who knows what may have happened....house on fire, children (ages 4 and 6) burned to death. I contacted aprox. 5-6 indiv. at consumer relations and either I was told that no warrenty=nothing they could do, or that they agree with me but=nothing they could do. I got this stove in 2002....no warranty left, but no expectation that a stove would stay on by itself while my family slept either.
I was charged $148.40 for labor when a GE repaireman came. I was told by a supervisor, Mr. Wapps, at GE that, I should be lucky that this is all they were charging. As far as I am concerned, given the possible outcome scenerios that may have occured, Mr. Wapps was NOT giving me any gifts, although he thought he was. In fact, when I asked him if it was reasonable that an oven be on by itself while people slept in their home given the possible scenerios that may occur, Mr. Wapps told me, That is a matter of opinion regarding whether or not that could be dangerous. He ended up hanging up on me...which suprised the repaireman standing in my kitchen who heard the entire call by the way.
The repaireman said a short in the oven coil normally stops the oven from working, but in my case, it stayed on and this is a malfunction he said...a rare occurance he also said. He went on to say maybe he sees one of these a year and even then it is after the oven is 15-20 years old. He agrees with my thoughts as well. I just wrote a 5 page letter to Appliance Headquarters in Kentucky, asking for my $148.40 to be reimbursed at the least, and a new stove (oven) at the most. I do not believe that I should pay ANYTHING to get an oven coil fixed that stayed on by itself...or went on by itself.

When we remodeled our kitchen we installed all GE appliances. Our glass cooktop started needing repairs within three years after purchase. Repairmen told us the thermostats were faulty. A burner would be set on simmer when suddenly, without any warning, go into the highest heat setting. The only way to control the temperature would be to turn the burner completely off. It would either be on the highest heat setting or off, nothing in between. That means someone had to be watching the burners every second while cooking. Nothing could be put on simmer and left for any period of time, even one or two minutes.
I contacted the GE consumer division and told them of the fire hazard. Nothing was done except to send a letter telling me they would replace a burner for no charge if it failed within three months. Of course none of the burners managed to fail within that time frame. We also purchased a GE dishwasher that needed multiple repairs. We replaced that appliance also. The problems with the dishwasher were only annoyances and inconveniences, not fire dangers.
It cost us $594.93 in total repairs incurred at various times for replacing the burners. We had pans that were badly damaged by the sudden high heat when we weren't aware the thermostat failed. At the last repair visit In April, 2008 I was informed parts are no longer available. Since then I have been looking for a replacement cooktop. It will most certainly NOT be a GE.

I called GE and at first they told me I would have to pay a service call of $80 plus whatever other fees to repair it. I told them I shouldn't have to pay for anything because I believed that it was a defect in the oven. The person told me it could have been many things that could have caused the glass to shatter. I asked to speak to a manager. She waived the service fee and had someone come and look at it.
When the serviceman arrived the next day, he said it could have been a crack on the glass and when it heated up it caused it to break or he says for all I know something could have fallen on it to make it break how do I know I wasn't here the serviceman said. He told me that GE would waive the price of the glass but I would still be responsible for the repair fees which are $130.00. My husband and I purchased a GE 30" Free Standing Electric Range (Model #: JBS56WLWW) from Home Depot on 02/09/07. We have had no noticable problems with the oven until today. My husband bought a box of steaks and has used the broiler for the 4th time within a week. He broiled his steak 7 minutes on the first side and 5 minutes on the second side. He turned the oven off and while sitting in the dining room eating his steak he heard a loud sound of glass shattering. He immediately went to see what happened and noticed the inside glass panel (not the outside panel) shattered on the oven. He had to use the shop vac to clean the glass up from the kitchen as well as the inside of the oven.
Our first response was find the receipt and call Home Depot to see if they knew anything about the warranty on the oven. They knew nothing and gave my husband GE's number which was actually the wrong phone number. My husband looked up GE's phone number on the web site and called them to get a surprising response. The first woman he spoke to told him that it sounded like some kind of manufacturing defect and I am going to transfer you to a number that is authorized to repair the product at no charge. Before she transferred him she gave him the phone number. Upon speaking to a woman at that number she told him the glass would cost $103.00 plus the technicians installation labor but they will waive the technicians fee to drive out to the house.
In the mean time I was online doing a search and immediately pulled up consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/ge_ranges.htm thru a search. To my surprise I just glanced through, what I later printed out as 16 pages (which the pages are shrunk to very small writing), to find that several GE models have had problems with the glass exploding. One person said they hadn't even used their oven for 24 hours. My husband still on the phone with GE explained that I found this on consumeraffairs as being a major problem with their glass on the ovens and told her this really needs to be a recall and needs to be replaced at no charge. She got rude and would not budge. He handed me the phone and I asked to speak with a supervisor. Her response was there is no one else to talk to and anything further would have to go in writing to their corporate office. I said "you mean to tell me you have no supervisor that I can talk too." Her reply was "look what part of you cannot speak to anyone else do you not understand!" I was surprised and upset with how I was just treated and she put me on hold immediately which no one else picked up to answer my call. As many others have said on consumeraffairs.com GE should be forced to do something this is wrong. I bought a GE gas range in Nov. 2007. To date I have had the burner covers replaced, the drip pans replaced and a repairman to put the gasket back between the oven and the oven door. I now must call a repairman again since the gasket fell out again. Have talked to GE twice and Emailed them 3 times. They do not care that the parts of the stove are falling apart. The service people I spoke with were rude and unpleasant. I have also had trouble with their GEmoneyline service, but thats another story.
The salesman at Arthur F. Schultz in Erie, PA sold me the stove using the sales pitch the GE ranges were rated #1 by Consumer Reports. I think they had better change their rating. My son inspects homes for an insurance company and he inspected a home worth over a million dollars and they had a built in GE range that had not one bit of enamel left on the grates. My friend had all Ge appliances put in her new log home. To date the microwave has had to be replaced and the stove and dishwasher repaired several times. At the moment my dishwasher does not work (GE). I had a GE stove purchased in 1998 and the grates completely lost all the enamel and the paint came off the front of the stove and rusted. GE did nothing about it. I swore I would never buy another GE product, but this salesperson told me GE fixed all their problems and the gas ranges now were the best thing since sliced bread.
The appearance of the stove is embarrassing. The inconvenience of calling a repairman for a stove that is 3 months old is ridiculous. Of course I do not want an appliance in my kitchen that looks horrible and I think GE is getting away with highway robbery.

We had problems with our down draft vent on our range last year. GE Service replaced initially, then 4 to 5 more times after that since the initial problem was never fixed - vent would stop after an hour and smelled like burning. In January 2008, the technical informed us there is nothing more they can do and we needed to contact GE Consumer Relations. GE Consumer Relations informed us we can get the complete range and vent replaced at a pro-rated cost of $380 including installation and removal of the old one. We agreed.
The delivery person simply delivered and refused to install and remove the old one because he told us we needed to call a licensed electrician. We called GE Consumer Relations again who informed us the installation meant simple installation and that we were basically out of luck. First they took our money for the repair that was not done, then they took another $380 by simply dumping the new product without the promised installation and removal.

Purchased my GE electric range on 12/27/06 as part of a kitchen renovation. I use the oven maybe twice a week at most. On 2/8/08 I turned on the broiler and in less than a minute, I heard this loud noise that actually sounded like something was stuck in the disposal. I looked at the oven and saw smoke coming out. I opened the oven door and serious sparks and fire came shooting out. The heating element had exploded and was on fire.
When I was able to check it out, there was a 2-3 inch gap in the heating element where it blew up. The next day when I was vacuuming, I noticed a bunch of burn marks on my new hardwood floor where hot metal had landed.
GE has offered to waive the cost of a diagnostic visit by the repair person, but they have totally ignored my floor problem. And we will have to pay for any oven parts and repairs since the warranty ran out on 12/27/07.

I just bught a GE gas range and a GE over the range microwave oven. The problem I have is when you reach over the gas range to use microwave, you wind up turning on gas on range without knowing it. I had these units less then 2 weeks, and it happened 3 times. The first time it happened, I figure out the problem; and even though my family knows about this, we still did it 2 more times with out realizing it. You don't know until you smell gas 10 to 15 minutes later. This is a big safety problem.
I talked to GE customer relations about this, and they said that's the way it was manufactured; there is no defect in gas range. THIS IS A SAFETY PROBLEM. The two units were made to work together. One person there told me to buy another gas range with knobs on top of range, not in front. How does that solve the problem for other people? This could happen to anyone; it could be fatal.

We bought a GE stove from Sears 2-3 years ago. I just noticed tonight that the oven took a very long time to preheat to 375 degrees. I thought this was odd, but never in a million years did I suspect an oven malfunction. However, when my cookies turned out half-baked and wouldn't brown properly, I noticed that the wire circuitry at the bottom of the oven had broken into three sections. Some of the pieces of wiring had fallen onto the floor of the oven and the wire bracket that is supposed to hold that section of wiring had upended and was lying on its side. I have never seen anything so bizarre with nothing to cause it other than ordinary cooking. I am lucky there was not a fire in the oven as the inner oven door is blackened at the area where the wiring broke open.
I will have to call a repair person and possibly replace the entire stove.

The door was not in motion at the time, last actuation was approximately 5 minutes prior. Repair visit #1 was 12/28, and new glass had to be ordered. Installation was to be on 1/4, but was cancelled as new glass had shattered in shipping. Now pending installation on 1/7. Tonight (1/6/2008) same phenomenon happened on lower oven door. We purchased a GE Profile Gas range with four burners and a center grill in 2001. It has worked fine but the grill is a terrible hazard. The switch in front of the range for the grill will go on if lightly touched. So if you are in front cooking and move past the knob it will turn on. Or while cleaning. Since the grill is covered with a stainless steel cover when not in use, one doesnt see the grill is on but the cover heats up to a dangerously high temperature that causes burns if you come into contact with it. SInce it isn't supposed to be hot, someone not aware of this problem can be seriuosly burned. We've reported this to GE but never got a response. We just have to constantly check to be sure that knob is turned to off. I won't purchase a GE product again. Dangerous and unresponsive.
Danger to anyone not aware of the heated cover on the grill...and a fire hazard if it goes on while someone is away. Since it covers the range and shows no signs of being hot, it is a hidden hazard. Can't be repaired. Knob is defective design.

There was no injury--just that I cannot use the oven until it is fixed, and GE is going to charge a fee $89.95 for a service rep to come out and look at it, as well as a fee for parts. I have been reading that this has happened to many people, and I feel there should be a recall on the oven; and an engineer should be looking into what is making this happen. From the start, this stove has posed a hazard. It was not so obvious at first as I was only cooking for my son and myself. However, I later began cooking for several members of the family and keeping my grandchildren. The problem with this stove is the grate system. The stove has a glass top and round grates that will not stay in place.
Many, many times I have caught a pan before it slid completely off the stove. Larger pans are especially likely to tip the burner grate and begin to slide. I have complained about the more than once and GE has chosen to do nothing. I would love to have a onepiece grate that would fit over 2 burners at once or even a 4 burner grate that could sit right on top of the glass.
Grabbing a hot pan is dangerous; but my biggest fear is that a pan will slide off and spill hot contents on one of the small children who are often "under foot". I just discovered this past week that the self cleaning oven will not work. I did use it one other time but was fearful of the extremely high temps generated during the cleaning cycle. Now that I have read the other complaints, I realize that I may have been saved a shattered front glass. GE seems totally unresponsive to complaints and I intend to avoid ALL their products in the future.

2 years ago I bought a GE profile stove with convection oven. It didn't work properly out of the box!
I've had repairs done at least 6 times in the last two years. Entire control panels have been replaced as well as an oven thermostat.
At the present time, the oven is not working properly. When the service person contacted a GE tech support person he was told (after being on the phone trouble shooting with him for 45 min.) that basically, I must not know how to cook!
I've been cooking with a convection oven for years without a problem until purchasing this stove. GE is unwilling to replace the stove.

We bought a GE Range #JBP80 and while cooking the Thanksgiving turkey, the upper heating unit (broiler) came on. When the oven reached over 500 degrees the range started beeping. The turkey was on fire. We unplugged the stove as the manuel states to restart the electronics. We left it unplugged over nite.

Two of the appliances I purchased from GE in 1999 were a Microwave over model # JVM1440AA1 and a gas range model # JGBP30AEAIAA.
The first time we turned the top gas burners on, the porcelain popped off of the burner grates.
The first time we used the oven the porcelain popped off the bottom of the oven. This repair was covered by the warranty. They replaced the bottom plate in the oven and gave us new burner grates for the top of the stove. The porcelain also popped off of the new grates but we said why bother. Junk is Junk.
The microwave is another story. The plastic frame around the control panel has cracked on the bottom of the frame. This is the 4th or 5th time this has happened in five years. The last time it was replaced was in March 2005. This frame has only lasted for nine months this time. GE said it is a cosmetic problem and will not replace it. The plastic frame around the microwave door has the same problem with cracking. I am on the 4th door at this time.

Control panel touch-pad on GE oven failed after using only twice.
I bought 2 of these ovens a few years ago, one I installed immediately and the second I stored for a house I anticipated refurbishing. The touch pad failed on the first oven rather soon after installation but GE replaced it since it was less than a year after I bought it. IThey thought it failed because the instructions did NOT say to provide a hole for the heat to escape when it was in use. I faxxed them a picture of my instllation manual, and they agreed there was a problem. The serviceman said it happened all the time and advised buying a service contract.
Now I have installed the second oven. The touchpad failed after using the oven twice as I said in the opening. I called GE, but didn't have much hope since it was more than a couple of years since the purchase date.
Since I found your site, I decided to post this. It seems that the faulty touchpad situation is common with GE. If you are lucky, you might get a replacement free.
I bought a replacement from an independent vendor. I have discovered the "Robert Shaw Controls Company" makes the panel.

We purchased a non-self cleaning oven manufactured by GE.
It got extremely hot when the oven was on, and I felt it was malfunctioning. Twice I had repairmen telling me it was fine. I had them open a service case for me because I wanted a self cleaning oven and was willing to pay the difference. They refused, stating that they were aware the unit ran hot, but could do nothing for me.
I then wrote a letter to GE's Consumer Relations Department complaining I felt it was a safety issue. They still refused to work with me.

On November 26, 2003 I bought a replacement oven for my old GE double built in oven which had, since 1968, finally deteriorated to the point where I could no longer repair it due to unavailability of parts.
The new GE oven which I bought (Mod. JKP56C0D1CC Ser. RA277067Q) was a more than satisfactory replacement. All went well and the unit performed flawlessly until the morning of October 3, 2005 when it quit working due to a failure of the electronic controls.
I called GEs service organization and was told that no one could come out until the seventh. Friday arrived and your service man arrived. Unfortunately he did not have the parts to make repairs. He said that he would be back Friday the fourteenth and that the parts would be shipped to my house before then.
Because it is now Thursday and the parts had not arrived as of 11:00 am I decided to call and check. GEs' automated telephone information service politely informed me that my service call would take place on Monday the seventeenth. I must now cancel a doctors appointment which I made based upon the promise of service on the fourteenth. It is a good thing I took the initiative to call because GE didn’t think that it was important to call me.

3 year old GE wall oven stopped working. I have been trying for 9 weeks to get it serviced. I wrote to the General manager of Consumer Relations 2 weeks ago, with no answer.
