BB&T

Cathy of Massey MD (02/20/09)
BBT put a hold (5 days) on my deposit, which was a check from my retiremet disbursement check. It was Sat. morning and I really didn't have a choice. (Did I mention I'm a Native American.) Anyway, I'd had been doing business in this bank for over 2 years and several of the tellers call me by my name. I never had a hold place on any of my deposits (I'm also a farmer.) and I was very frustrated with this. Since the lady was new, what was I to do. In these poor economic times, I need all the money I can get to put the food on the table.

Anyway. When I came into the bank during regular business hours, the bank manager refused to tell me why a 5-day hold was placed on the check. Her glib remark was, they do it to everyone who brings in an unusual deposit? What does that mean? I thought it was because the Smith-Barney, Citibank check was not honored. That wasn't the case. The bank was just using my money to fund their projects and this is how they get away with. Putting holds on personal funds and using the money for their own projects.

I felt discriminated against because of my brown complexion and black hair, otherwise, the teller wouldn't had ever put a hold on my deposited check.

Do you know how sometimes there is a 1.00 authorization that is requested when making a debit charge? Well, BB&T actually charges overdraft fees on the 1.00 authorization charge AND a seperate overdraft fee on the charge itself. After a 36 online debit charge, which was within five minutes turned around and credited to my account, BB&T charged me 70 in overdraft fees. They charged 35 for the 1.00 authorization charge and then, another 35 for the actual 35 charge itself. So although, the transaction was an imediate credit, it cost me 70 in overdraft fees.

Maybe, in their disclosure statements they have drawn up rules and regulations, I don't know. I am not a lawyer. BUT, I do know this: There is such a thing as moral principles that businesses should adhere to. Especially when they are actually using YOUR money to run a business. Because, of these generated overdraft fees, I expect to have a series of checks and automatic withdraws that will occur and generate even more overdraft fees. Therefore, my paycheck which will be automatically deposited will be ate up, for sure. And, that means no gas, grocery, or bill money.

BB&T bank has begun to hold deposits for up to 10 days! This particular incident has caused me over 210.00 in nsf charges. Upon going to the facility and asking what was going on I was told by the teller that she had to explain this at least 4 times per day! I think BB&T knows that they are cleaning out people's banking accounts knowing that they are screwing people! Any other bank I know deposits are automatic! That and debits woth pin come out 3-4 days after the original charge and your account balance does not reflect a change on the atm balance nor on the telephone!

I finally got sick of this after the 210.00 charge and when I asked for a refund of nsf charges since they clain to have know that this was confusing people I was told no and that if they returned mine they would have to return everyones! I said that they should! The teller informed me that if that was the case they would go bankrupt! I watch my account closely but they hold deposits and let you use your atm card when there is no money in there!

When I checked my account I had plenty in there according to the atm only to use the money and be charged! I have contacted the bbb but they told me they couldn't file the complaint if the customer service dept keeps sending back the mail! They won't accept any coorespondence with the BBB! If someone knows another avenue I can take please let me know I am really upset about this.

They are causing me to go bankrupt and be extremely stressed out!

I received foreclosure papers today. My property is valued at 937,000.00

Amount of note is 517,000.00. I can not believe that my bank will not work with me with this kind of equity. My payment record has been perfect until the economic slowdown. I have had difficulty keeping up with payments, and have tried to get my bank to loan me money against my equity so that my, once very successful company, can survive.

Now, like many other Small American companies, I will have to shut my doors leaving yet another American dream of owning your own business come to an end. Please help me, if possible, not just become another statistic. Why are the banks not required to help small business owners by loaning money with this type of equity? The banks are just trying to keep the money or in my case make my loan liquid without any regard for their current clients or the future of America.

Lost American small business due to unfair and unjust banking practices
