If I could give 0 stars I would. Purchased Green Dot card as a gift for Mother’s Day. Paid activation fee, put funds on it from Dollar Tree. I Have the receipt as well, & the charge on my debit card to prove it. I gave it to her as a gift for Mother’s Day and when she tried activating, it asked for personal information to confirm which we didn’t have and ultimately wouldn’t let her activate. She gave it back to me & I tried calling and tried online. Both failed as I didn’t have any personal info given for that card when I bought it and it would allow me to add mine. Went to dollar tree where they sell green dots cards and was basically told it ain’t their problem. Calling green dot three times. 1st waited forever then after picking up saying, "hello….”, they hung up on me.

Final time I got a guy who was hard to understand, told him the issue, after about half hour of explanation and back and forth he said I need to email the receipt and he sent an email I can reply to. I sent verification of purchase. It was purchased the day before. He said ok we will send refund up to five days. I said OK. Then I receive another email with the refund amount that they are giving me back which was 50 Cent, literally .50!! What a smack in the face, especially with proof of purchase. It may have only been $25 between the money put on and the fee, but it’s the principle; I spent money on a visa debit, put money on that card and now everybody’s telling me it’s not their problem and offering a whole fifty cents to make up for it. I don’t understand how we can literally purchase a card, put money on it, something is wrong with the card.

We can’t use it or have access to our money and then they just pocket it and don’t give it back. Then they say it’s not their problem and keep making you go back-and-forth between companies and blaming each other until we just give up. It’s a big scam. I’m not the first and I won’t be the last and it’s just the principle with this situation as well as losing out on $25 that I reloaded onto a card and they just took and refused to give it back. If we can’t even trust the companies we buy products from, then why are they even in business? I won’t be using green dot or the dollar tree again.. I might only be one person, and they can say who cares, but this has happened to multiple people at that location and I’m sure many other locations across the country and when many people don’t buy something or put money on something, that equals way more than just me as a single lost customer but many

Green Dot staff and customer service/support, or lack thereof, is TERRIBLE!! This is merely a money grab organization in my opinion, strictly in business to provide the bare minimum in financial services, while maximizing as much profit and greed as they can, before the FTC/FDIC performs a seemingly "cursory" audit of their activities and antics! In 2024, Green dot was fined approximately $44 million for deceptive practices...while that may appear as a steep penalty, I am willing to wager that it came AFTER the company had amassed $300 million or more through fraud and deceptive practices! So the "fine" was just a drop in the proverbial bucket for them, and, this "penalty" aside, they are STILL allowed to remain in business, so what does that tell you about "strict regulatory controls and oversight??!!" A classic example of quid pro quo at its finest.

Their "Help" center is basically non existent, I always encounter extreme difficulty when eventually speaking with a "live" person, who is almost always offshore, in some distant land, with a difficult accent, and very limited knowledge about financial matters or transactions. And, if you read any of their customer complaints, note Green dot's generic, and rote response..."Sorry to hear about your issue. We will have a member of our team get back to you." And its always signed "Green dot corporation," NEVER a named individual or representative with whom you can communicate with! Why does the Federal government allow ANY organization to get away with this behavior and unseemly business model and practice? I know...Again, quid pro quo!! I would advise any consumer thinking about entering into a relationship with Green dot, to enter at your own risk!

I can not explain the nightmare dealing with gd has been. And continues to be. 6x's now they've told me the issue is fixed. It's caused me to sleep in my truck during a snowstorm, not be able get my truck out of the shop, and not be able to take my daughter out to dinner. Not to include the humiliation of being denied when I have PLENTY of money in the account. I'm sick of these companies screwing people over and saying sorry. 6 different times now GD said the issue is solved. Now tonight with a cart full of groceries and things for a report my daughter is doing at school GD dropped the ball again. Earlier in the night I couldn't get gas because I got denied. gd once again said problem solved. This company has hidden fees and controls your money. STAY VERY FAR AWAY!!!! Don't be a fool like I was. I very firmly do not think I'm getting my money back.

I moved towards an online bank years ago after moving out of an urban area. Green Dot provided me with cash back at my local Walmart, which was my only option for groceries. It just made sense. Fast forward to January 2026. While working in Ohio, I noticed two charges totaling $1,620.00 appear on my account from a New Jersey store. I immediately contacted Green Dot to report the fraud. What followed was an insane journey, providing me with new knowledge of just how horrid this bank is, how many times they've been sued, and how they gatekeep your information and make it nearly impossible to access it. My fraud report was denied a total of 6 times.

I had to file a police report, get a detective involved in a different state (New Jersey), and escalate it all the way up to the FDIC. This involved a large amount of time speaking with the store and corporate office where the theft took place, as well as time spent via email and phone with the FDIC (due to Green Dot violating Reg.E of the FDIC).

Then, out of nowhere, after my detective got a subpoena for video footage of the actual crime, my account was closed. This happened while I was at the Emergency Room with my father, who had just had a stroke and is hospitalized. Now my account is frozen, I have no access to the thousands of dollars sitting in it, and no way to provide for myself or my father, or to pay my bills, while Green Dot lazily issues a check to my address. If I had time to give you the whole story and provide the insane phone-recorded conversations I've had with their customer service, you would never, under any circumstances, open an account with this bank or utilize any of their services.

The reason for freezing my account without notice, according to them, was "suspicious activity." Despite my knowing that ZERO suspicious activity has occurred. I know this because an arrest will be made for my fraud case, and my account is being monitored to ensure the thieves do not attempt this again. This has become such an annoying and time-consuming experience that if I find out a business works with this bank, I will avoid that business as well. I cannot express this enough - DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS BANK, and before you do, just Google their name. Check out their lawsuits and the public complaints. Green Dot Corporation is a horrible experience all the way around. They truly do not care about the American consumer.

Avoid Green Dot – Terrible Service and Unreliable Cards. I wish I could give zero stars. The card barely works—sometimes it works at one store, then fails at the next. It’s incredibly frustrating and completely unreliable. On top of that, they apparently think it’s okay to close accounts and just hold onto people’s money. Their “customer service” is a joke—more like “customer do nothing.” I’ve never seen such a lack of accountability. If you value your money and sanity, stay far away from Green Dot.

The worst service I've ever had... They shut my account down right after my monthly check went in. Every time I called, I would get transferred to at least 5 people who talked in circles. At one point, they told me that I could only use it like a gift card to spend it down. I pay my bills with that money, even after that, they never let me use it until I demanded them to close the account and send me a check. Also, this was just before Christmas, I was hung up on, lied to and they talked in circles.

I filed a dispute form for 11 of those charges Saturday. I was informed by their dispute department that if approved, I would be credited back my funds within 10 business days with a paper check via USPS mail?? Green Dot closed the account and it was stated by their customer service & dispute department located in India that they would unable to open a new account. I've used this account for direct deposits and now they're unable to refund my stolen money electronically? I don't have money for my day day, such as getting to work let alone the major monthly expenses coming up in a couple of weeks. GreenDot lost or stole the funds placed on a temporary pre-paid debit card I purchased. They initially blamed the store I purchased the card from. 7-11 corporate did an investigation and found the store innocent. As did my local police. After several attempts to call GreenDot and get resolution, they admitted the card was registered to a different name. After being disconnected a few times and on hold for hours, the all-Indian reps said that GreenDot will not refund my $$. I have never dealt with a shadier, more criminal company than greendot. They were just fined $44 million for customer fraud.

The next time they called I hit redial and got a message saying all representatives are busy. Every day they would call and hang up. So I sent the documents on May 21st. I called to see if they received the documents and they had and the lady would be the dispute back in the system. I was checking on the appeal at least once a week every rep I got would say, "Yes we are still working on it."

Then 6 weeks into filing the dispute I was told in June 28th the dispute was never entered. How is that fair to me. Wait another 45 days.
