I have had multiple negative interactions with customer service and the handling of prior authorizations. While the agents weren't rude, they couldn't answer my questions accurately. One agent said there was no fax for appeals, but I had a fax number for appeals from previous months, and when I read it to her, she did not know what I was talking about. They cancelled my prior authorization that was "in review" for 10 business days, and say now it just does not exist. I am currently attempting to get an explanation but haven't yet. How does a prior authorization just disappear.

I have had multiple jobs use Express Scripts. I can't fault them for the insurance plan my employer chooses, or how much coverage my employer chooses. This rating is based upon their pharmacy/home delivery and their customer service. Their specialty pharmacy, Accredo, seems great. The mail order pharmacy is more expensive than my local Walmart pharmacy, despite them also being my insurance company. One might think your insurance company wants to keep more of your business, but one would be mistaken.
Their customer service is offshore. It took me several frustrating minutes to get to a representative, and when I did, I was all the more frustrated by their lack of understanding their own app or website. The rep, Lyka (I'm unsure of the correct spelling) kept telling me that I should have added a savings card online before my prescription was sent to them. I told her that there is no way of doing that and walked her through the app options, and asked her how exactly I could do that when it did not show up in my prescriptions list to do so. She argued, saying that it's the only way to use the savings card. I asked her how and she could not tell me. She said the prescriptions came to them yesterday, and I told her that while they came through yesterday, they did not show on my profile until this morning.
Then I asked for information regarding pricing breakdown to see if the savings card applied, because I cannot afford $1100 a month for one prescription. She told me to check my invoices. I explained that I did not have any invoices. She kept repeating herself but she could not tell me where I was supposed to find this information. When I asked to speak to another department or her supervisor, she told me there was no one else for me to speak to. After 40 minutes on the call, much of that on hold, I still got no answers. She also disconnected our call so I could not do the survey at the end.
In the end, after all of the scolding I got for not adding my prescription card online before the prescription was sent to them (seriously), she told me to call back tomorrow. I have since put in a transfer request for Walmart to pull these prescriptions over. Also, I do not have a "receipt" for these presentations because I cancelled them, but I uploaded that printout for admin review.

They are a bunch of no good crap artists. They have no business in the medical industry. Tricare forces me to use them, which means some dirty politician is getting their pockets lined by that deal and, we the little people, get screwed by substandard oxygen thieves making up the dumbest excuses for not shipping my meds. I'd give them negative stars if I could.

Online portal has been down more often than not over the course of the past month - I cannot check statuses of my prescriptions, when I call customer support they are also unable to pull up my account information. As a result I have no idea if or when my antidepressants will get delivered - I have been out for a week now.

This is the worst insurance company I have ever had to deal with. They transfer you to “the right department” 5 times & you will spend 2-3 hours for them to keep saying the same thing over and over. I work at a pharmacy & call them 2-3 times a day & it’s the same problem EVERY DAY! I wish they had better communication & people that work there that actually know what they are doing!

Express scripts is a disaster. Their continuous requirement to verify auto fill medications (especially ones that a person is taking for life) has resulted in numerous instances of running out of the prescription. Their billing system is also fraught with inefficiency with checks not being cashed for up to a month and then they just keep adding the charges to the balance for new orders while the checks are in limbo. This has resulted in overpayments or threats of collection services. Unfortunately my healthcare provider, a government agency, uses Express Scripts exclusively for long term medication. Probably explains why this incompetency can continue. Worse yet, when you try to contact the government agency to complain, you are placed in contact with Express Scripts. Any wonder why it doesn't get fixed?

Today is 10-22-2025. I called Express Scripts a month ago to let the know that I am going in vacation and I need to get my refill early before 10-25-2025 which in that day should go on Process normal. The customer rep said no problem, I placed my order on 10-10-2025, what happen is then they send email with update on the order with date start on 10-25-2025 normal date to Process, I call them back and the rep said, "Don't worry. You will get it" then I got email with update only the order date, I keep calling them every date, the only thing they do is change the order date but the normal date to Process still 10-25-2025, I got approved from my insurance company to got refill early and I call Express Scripts and I told them that, I keep calling them every day since then and nothing happen even I talk to rep supervisor still the same till last Saturday 10-18-2025 the rep supervisor put the 3 medicine under delay Status with the same 3 medicine under schedule Status.
Then Monday 10-20-2025 when I open the Express Scripts website they took off the delay Status for the 3 medicine and left schedule Status, so I call them up and I talk to the rep supervisor that I had 3 medicine under delay Status and I told her that I got approved from the insurance company to got refill early then suddenly I found the my 3 medicine under schedule Status disappear also, then I call them back.
The the rep told me that my doctor stop the 3 medicine since August which is a lie then she call my insurance company also. For what I don't know, and they told me to talk to my doctor to get new prescription send to local pharmacy so I can get my medicine before my vacation, I still have all the email with (There's an Update to Your Prescription Order) for every time they change the order date, what I found out that Express Scripts can't overwrite the date for refill, or Express Scripts have to train their rep and their rep supervisor too. Don't lie to your client.

Absolutely horrendous. I let my health insurance company talk me into using this service. I'm typing this out while experiencing withdrawal symptoms from not having my anxiety medication. They informed me that they couldn't get in touch with my doctor. I spoke with my doctor and he in turn, submitted the prescription to them. The day before I ran out of medication, they sent me an email telling me that they couldn't complete the order due to a problem they encountered. The order was placed on 9/30 and it is now 10/21. The level of ineptitude with this service is really dangerous. People could end up in the hospital due to issues like this. Do not ever use them. Way safer just to pick up your prescriptions from your local pharmacy.

Although I am grateful to have medical insurance, I’m beyond frustrated that Cigna forces us to use Express Scripts for ongoing medications. I have been out of blood pressure/heart medication for 2 days. I requested the refill over 2 weeks ago and my dr never received the request. After I called my dr and they got the approval for the refill request, I called customer service to see if I could pay extra for expedited shipping since they’d taken so long and I was running out of medication. I was told there was nothing I could do because the prescription was being processed and a shipping label had already been created. Now, USPS is claiming “road is not accessible” and no mail here today. Just had to call my local Walgreens and my dr to get a new prescription filled that I now have to pay for out of pocket because I can’t go another day.

Called on Friday to get a prescription transferred to ExpressScripts from a CVS pharmacy. Only did this to get a longer prescription as I am going out of town and CVS will only fill short term supply. ExpressScripts initially told me that they would be able to do so then dropped the call. Called back on Saturday and was told that actually they could not get it transferred. I called CVS directly and they got it transferred to ExpressScripts immediately. Medication showing as waiting for prescription 24 hours later on Sunday. I called back ExpressScripts again and they have no record of a prescription being received. CVS saying prescription was indeed sent. Monday contacted my doctor's office for a new prescription. They send it to Express Scripts right away.
Express Scripts had to be called multiple additional times to get it in process to upgrade the shipping and confirm shipping address. I am told it should ship right away. Following morning Tuesday, I get a notification that prescription has been cancelled. Turns out this is the prescription that was sent from CVS. Reportedly, has been escalated to fulfillment center. Nothing further able to be done and now out of the medication.

If you are a chronic pain patient taking tramadol, save yourself a lot of heartache and go some place else. Their policies on opioids are unreasonable. They will not dispense as written and require authorization from your doctor. One of the problems is they will not contact my doctor back. My physician's office has been trying for two weeks to contact these people. Nothing but crickets.
I take 2 50MG tablets up to every 6 hours. My doctor wrote the prescription for 120 tablets. Express Scripts would only let my local pharmacy give me 28 pills with a note stating these had to last at least a month or more nefore a refill. Do the math. Your best bet is to use a discount service and just bypass Express Scripts. I use **. I can get 120 tablets for about 15 bucks. I have been on fentanyl patches for over ten years and receiving them from Express Scripts. I told my doctor I want to get off of them so every thirty months we lower My dosage so I can get off of this. You were telling me it was delayed so I Had to cool 324 times and each representative told me a different story. One told me that they put it on overnight. Then a week later I check in again. And they said that person never did that so they did it. Then I get the notice about being delayed. They said it would take up 5 to 7 days to receive it. Well I was literally out the next day.
This is something you do not play with you. End up in the hospital immediately if you don't switch this patch on the exact time. I was faith in dealing with your company. I finally have received it today!!! I always receive it few days earlier. And I already spoke to my insurance company. And they agree. To tell me that, I am not gonna receive my patches. I've been a mess mentally and physically over this b.S. This is not the first time this has happened. This happens a lot!!! The last time they were late, I literally and then off in brookhaven hospital, because I was going through withdrawal, which I never have in my life, because I don't do any drugs.
I find it that your company does not have the right People working for you. I had to end up pulling a supervisor after four freaking phone calls. Then she said I will get it overnight. I don't find it fair that you guys really don't care about people's lives. Because this is what you're telling me. Is it ridiculous and it's really scary. After I am done with my medication and I am finally off it which will take up to another year. I will end my subscription with express scripts. But this needs to be fixed. I have read other complaints that people have also complained that a very intense medication that you need Is delayed. I'm just so she only disappointed. Somebody needs to do something about this company , please. Thank you. For your time. You have my phone number. I'll repeat it so you can call me if necessary.

I used Express Scripts for a few years without incident. Then, my pain meds went missing. Express Scripts’ tracking shows it was “shipped” whereas USPS’ tracking shows they never received the package. The first time I called Express Scripts they told me I needed to wait 30 days before they could send a refill. This policy was confirmed by a supervisor, so I guess I was supposed to put my pain on hold. When I called back after 30 days they told me there was nothing they could do (again) and to contact USPS. Of course, USPS said they never received the package, so they couldn’t help me.
After waiting almost 6 weeks, I just received my meds but my credit card was charged twice. When I called about the duplicate charge, Express Scripts finally conceded they owe me a refund but said, IF APPROVED, I can only get an account credit based on their policy. I’m still waiting for my approval. If Tricare for Life offered another option for home delivery, I would never do business with Express Scripts again. It’s too bad seniors are saddled with such an inept provider and have to endure horrible customer service in order to afford their medications.

You can’t even afford to take the medicine you need to stay alive. The people that work this company are paid to lie to you and deny your claims.

I've been fighting over a charge for a $381.03, an amount I did not approve of. Once they ship a medication, even if you don't open the bottle, they will not take it back. I guess understand why, however, they should tell you, the cost by phone or email before they mail it to you. If you were standing at a retail pharmacy, when they tell you the cost of a medication, you can tell them, you can't afford that and say you don't want it.
I called them about it, they said they understood and will credit me. They never did so I made NUMEROUS phone calls to them. I disputed the charge through my credit card, and it was ruled in my favor. Credit card said it is a permanent credit to my account. then they charged my credit card the next month and the next month, so my credit card said it's FRAUD for them to keep charging my account for a charge that's been cleared. My credit card had to close out my account, and issue me a new card! this is FRAUD!! Since then I filed two complaints with the BBB. I can't understand how this fraudulent company can stay in business! I now go to my local pharmacy.

I had a prescription that was really late from them so I called and they said they weren’t gonna process it for another week. And then I asked them when the processing date was and it was four weeks previous to my call so they were processing my prescription five weeks late. That was their first defense. I called to take care of that prescription and the woman on the other end, transferred me to an information line that doesn’t have a receptionist.
Fast forward I had to cancel a prescription. I got the same woman and she transferred to that same information line. She did that twice. I had to make three phone calls just to cancel one prescription. That’s 20 minutes of my life gone. I am not gonna work with Express Scripts and I don’t recommend anybody do. I feel like this woman doesn’t know how to do her job so she just transfers you over and you can’t review her either because you never get to the end of the call to write a review about her. If express scripts read these reviews she’s the reason I’m never using your company again.

Every month there is a new problem with Express Scripts. For example, I received an email that I needed to log into the app to initiate a prescription. When I logged into the app, there is no available option to initiate the prescription. In fact, I could only find it under automatic renewals, but I had received the email stating I needed to do something to initiate the renewal. I called, and dealt with an automated system. None of the options they gave me fit my problem. I tried several ways to get through to a live person so that I could get the help I needed, but none of them worked.
There have been several occasions in which the medicine needed did not arrive in time before the previous prescription ran out. This has left us without insulin And glaucoma medication that is needed on a daily basis. Additionally, there has been denial of a medical device which the physician said Medicare typically covers, but Express Scripts being the pharmacy option who makes the determination denied it. This are just the most recent difficulties I have had with them, but new things happen every month. Their email requests for action don’t match the options that are given on the app and it is hard to get to a live person via the phone and since the options offered don’t match the need, we are left with nothing. My doctor submitted the form and got approved. Several years ago, they denied prio-authorization and forced my doctor to try generic. So my doctor prescribed generic. However after taking the medicine for one month, the blood pressure was not controlled and I had allergy symptom like itching and short breath. At that time my doctor appeal their decision and insisted brand Benicar.
Beginning from then, every year my doctor filed prio-authorization. The insurance company denied. My doctor office filed appeal and then finally got approved. I have had nothing but problems with this company. I called to refill my script in Feb 2025. I was told $617.00. That was higher than I normally pay. And I was put on payment plan for it. First payment should have been $205.00. When I received my script, the invoice was in there with the breakdown of the payment plan. When I looked at the invoice I almost passed out!!!! The total cost for the meds was almost $3000.00. I checked my credit card, and they almost charged me $1000.00 for the first payment of the payment plan. I immediately called Express Scripts to tell them about their error. I told them that I did NOT approve the almost $3000.00 cost for meds and that I only approved the cost of $617.00. They said someone would call me about it. No one called.
So, I called them again. They stated that they could not take the meds back and that I could not get a refund. I called my credit card company to dispute the 1st charge. And I did not dispute the $617.00 since that is what I agreed to pay. March 2025, I get 2 charges on my credit card. One charge is for 981.64 and $489.28. I called Express Scripts again and nothing was done on their end. I proceeded to call my credit card company to dispute those charges again. June 2025 Express Scripts charged my card for $121.54 & $858.04. July 2025 more charges from them for $367.73 & $816.84. I contacted Express Scripts again and they claim they gave me my money back. I checked my credit card, and the charges were still on there.
Again, I called my credit card company to dispute. Express Scripts charged my cc again in July 2025 for $1143.35. I called Express again and the claim they can no longer give me a refund because I was already given a refund in the last 18 months. I'm still in a battle with them and no one has called me back from this company. They stated they called me, but I received not one call from them, and I also offered to send them my phone bill so they can see that no one has called me about this. I swear I never leave negative reviews but at this point, I have to share my experience. Express Scripts will give you nothing but stress and anxiety. You will experience nearly everything BUT the ease of getting your prescription filled and delivered in a timely manner. I've had prescriptions take three weeks to be delivered - for a 30 day medication!
But this time around.. this time around my doctor sent in a prescription on 8/5.. I call that same day to let Express Scripts know that I will be going out of town on 8/16. I let them know I will need my medication delivered before then and to update the shipping speed to the FedEx overnight option. While on the phone, I'm assured that my medication will be delivered on 8/8 or 8/11. By 8/12, my medication has still not shipped. I call Express Scripts and they assure me the order will be shipped shortly. That day, I receive a notification "my order has shipped". This is a lie! It's been two days (now 8/14), and despite being given a tracking number, FedEx has still NOT received my package.
I called Express Scripts to ask what was going on and was told "your order was given to FedEx", "your order is no longer in our facility", "there's nothing we can do because we no longer have your medication" and was told to call FedEx. I've called FedEx... twice... and FedEx has ASSURED ME they DO NOT have my package. In addition, the tracking number provided to me clearly states that "FedEx is waiting for your package" and I have no expected ship date or expected delivery date. Oh, and FedEx told me that they can see the original expected delivery date was 8/13 (it's now 8/14) but they never received the package.
I explained all of this to Express Scripts and still... the only response I get is that they do not have my medication. It's hard to believe that apparently 'no one' has my medication?! I now am completely out of medication. I have one business day before I leave for a business trip and have almost zero chance of getting my medication in time. It's stressful, anxiety inducing, and all Express Scripts does is give you the run around saying "it's not our fault". If you have a choice in pharmacies, steer clear.

Messed up a critical medication because all the reps love to be polite to get a great review but don't really know what to do. 1) Promised a certain quantity would be shipped but in the end I live in a state that limits qty even though I told them they said not to worry.. 2) When their fulfillment couldn't ship the required qty, the amount just automatically fell but the copay was for the higher qty. 3) Since I was tracking it closely, I finally had them cancel it but it takes 48-72 hours to cancel so an actual pharmacy can't fill it. I have seen inefficiency but cannot believe this company actually gives wrong information. They will tell you what you want to hear but their reps are not trained. So you will be left to believe everything is great with your order until it's too late. And yes they change coverage/no coverage every year so every year check all your meds.

They send an email saying they’re processing then one saying they can’t because I need to have my doctor call them (which he is tired of doing) then processing then saying doctor said I don’t take it any more when I see a copy of the script in patient portal. I’m transferring all of mine to our local pharmacy because I can’t deal with the constant hassle for every script. They’ve gone way downhill this past year.

My insulin pen is on automatic refill. Since I did not get it in July, I reviewed my app. It showed no refills left... hmmm. Ok - I call them and finally speak to a real person. She tells me they faxed and called my dr but no response. I was on with her for 45 minutes, I call my dr and they said they got nothing from them until 3 minutes before I called. They sent it in and I get an email notification from Express Scripts saying - order is cancelled. Confused, I call them again. They tell me - it's out of stock. I asked why the first gal didn't tell me this. No one can answer that. And get this - since the order is cancelled - it goes off auto refill and I have to call them back in a week to check if it's in stock.
There are no alternatives available. So no insulin - they ask if I want to talk to a pharmacist so they can tell me what happens when you don't take your meds...lol - stoppp! I hate them - it has been one big nightmare since I started with them last year. You can't play with people's health like this. If I go to Walgreens, they will only give me one month supply and then it cancels my script with Express Scripts - this happened last time I need insulin. They offer no help or suggestions. Everything is out of stock or they don't carry it anymore - no reason just because!

I called on a Friday, gentleman at customer service said it should ship on Monday, I called Monday, I spoke with the Pharmacist and she said, it is ready to go out it is on ice. My question to them, why does it take so many days to process when they already have all my info and track other prescriptions from other pharmacies I have received. I can go to my local pharmacy and have it ready the same day, but here it will be coming up on one week and it still hasn't shipped. After two of our providers spent over an hour on the phone, on two separate occasions, we got transferred no less than three times to people who could not help us. Finally, after an hour and a half, with patients waiting, they get me to the pharmacist. They say they have held it up because they need to speak to the provider, but when we call they are not available. Then they still have no good explanation for why they cancelled the patient’s medications. It is infuriating, and they are holding up care, for both my patient and the patients that are waiting on me for an hour while we try to resolve this on the phone. Updated on 08/01/2025: I am also attaching the response from Express Scripts - faking their “concern” after two months of coldly not caring at all. Express Scripts is trying to have my review taken off! They are calling me “Ginger” because I use my wife’s email. I am Robert **. I just don’t know how to set up this email stuff. My wife is my caregiver. We have to use Express Scripts because they are the pharmacy for PEBA, my wife’s State Insurance plan as a retired teacher; but if you have a choice, run fast and hard away from this cruel, mean company!
Original Review: Express Scripts is the pharmacy for my Part D Medicare coverage. After a year of being on ** due to “risk of cardiovascular disease and events” with proof of past myocardial infarction and a stent in the artery in my lower left ventricle, Express Scripts stopped coverage of my medication at the highest dosage level and left me in horrible stomach cramps and nausea at the age of 75. My doctor turned in my same prior authorization as a year before when Express Scripts granted coverage (your heart never “heals” from a heart attack- the scarring and dysfunction is permanent); but Express Scripts denied my authorization and continues to do so.
After contacting a patient advocate explaining that I was not even allowed to nitrate down so as to not have this terrible pain. Express scripts sent a fake “sympathy” letter and promised two prescriptions to cover me until I could be re-evaluated. I eagerly filled out the paperwork and had my doctor submit the two prescriptions; and was promptly denied again because of no prior authorization. This company is evil and cruel. They have turned over authorizations to robotic evaluators that only grant a percentage- no matter who or what- just like United Healthcare was doing. I am attaching the cruel sympathy letter that they then would not honor.

ExpressScripts is an absolutely awful service - I have never before had this much trouble getting medication. I have never once been able to get my medication without issues on their end. Their websites falsely stating I don't have refills when a telephone operator of theirs confirmed I did have refills. Once this issue was solved, the website said the medication had to be pre-ordered and wouldn't be available for 3 months, which, again, a telephone operator confirmed to not be true. This operator was able to process an order of this medication for me, but it has been long past the time they said the medication would ship and I cannot even view the order on their website. Their website currently states I have no refills available, when their operators have confirmed that I do in fact have refills.
I couldn't even log into my account for the first few months of using this service. After attempting to log in I would use the verification codes they sent me to finalize the log in, and those verification codes never worked. Which, once again, a telephone operator could not provide me an answer for the issue. The log in just randomly started months after I gave up because no operator could find a solution. With any issue I have had with ExpressScripts, the telephone operators can never give me an answer as to why an issue is happening on their end. This is not a knock on the telephone operators, but just a testament as to how dysfunctional a service ExpressScripts is. Their website cannot even provide me receipts of past order that have been confirmed to have been made by their operators. Unless you have to use this service, I can not recommend more to avoid this service.

I have had nothing but issues with Express Scripts. Their customer service is awful. For example, my doctor ordered two prescriptions a week ago. Neither one has been filled even though both scripts were sent directly to Express Scripts from the doctor's office. I called Express Scripts and was not satisfied in that it would take up to another two days just to ship the scripts to me (so with shipping it would be yet another week to get the scripts to my home). I feel this is unacceptable service. It should have taken no more than a day to process and ship the scripts to me. There was no need for them to verify the scripts with my doctor as they were REFILLS.
Personally, I would rather drive to my local pharmacy and get my scripts in a day than endure such a long wait and calls to get my orders filled. Cigna should discontinue Express scripts contract for lack of customer service. If you have a choice, I suggest you find a local pharmacy and just pick up the order rather than this horrible mail order service. I see they have a one star rating. Be advised!

Found this out at almost 1700 on a Friday when the doctor's office was close. I had to go a week with blood pressure medication when my blood pressure runs in the 200s over 130s. Second went to get prescription fill app says it is covered then pharmacy tells me it is not covered and the cost was almost $1400. Called express scripts they said, "Oh no that medication is not covered." They told me alternative.
Got the doctor to change medication. Was sent to pharmacy when it was time to pick up the medication it was not covered because the prescription was written for 90 days. Checked app for pricing of medication on their app with results showing it was covered for 90 days. Once again called express scripts they said they only cover a 90 day supply if it is mailed from them not from the pharmacy. I explain that they have it listed on their app as covered through CVS for 90 supply. The response was well "Don't know why that is but we do not." So once again have to call doctor get another prior authorization for a medication that has already went through prior authorization just to change from a 90 day supply to a 30 day supply so they will cover. Delay in medication coverage that has the potential to cause severe complications even death. This company is not reliable and does not care.

Most recently my daughter’s needed meds said they’d arrive by 7/12; it is now 7/16, and she still does not have her regularly prescribed, DAILY medication. Like others, I’ve also seen the rx’s status that E.S. Is contacting the prescribing doctor. In my experience, they have only actually contacted a doctor 10% of the time they said they did.
If you use them, follow closely and request refill as soon as possible, then follow up that it was done. Overall, this service is unacceptable and ridiculously time intensive. However, there is a first time to have to write a review, and it starts with Express Scripts. My dermatologist has sent in a script to Express Scripts in mid-April for a specific injection. Express Scripts has cancelled my script twice, end of April and end of May. My dermatologist sent in all the correct information including a prior authorization and I have also provided a co pay card for payment and Express Scripts still has the audacity to not fill the medication properly. Constantly always giving the runaround.
Furthermore, this particular medication has been processing for a THIRD TIME since JUNE 15TH 2025. I could only imagine if the medication needed was a lifesaving medication. If you are counting on Express Scripts to keep you alive, I would highly recommend that you do not and find a different alternative. Lastly their staff and communication process are absolutely horrible. All the staff does is bounce you around until they find a staff member that might know what they are talking about.
Unfortunately, due to Express Scripts, I continue to suffer with my symptoms and have given up chasing Express Scripts down to figure out the issue as to the horrendous delay of receiving my medication. I would rather continue to just suffer from the symptoms I am dealing with then to constantly try and reach out to Express Scripts. Eventually, he came back to me and said that he had "great news for me" and that he had gotten it approved and that it would arrive "as soon as possible." I said, "When you say as soon as possible, do you mean by Thursday or Friday morning at the latest?" He said, "Yes, definitely." I reconfirmed this with him three times. They force you to use their shipping service in order to get 90 day supplies of medicine (which is typically the cheapest option). The medicine takes weeks to arrive and I've had nothing trouble. They send me meds when I've turned off automatic refills costing me hundreds of extra dollars. They are difficult to get on the phone and their automated phone service is HORRIBLE - it will make you want to throw your phone through a window. It is constantly glitching, asking you to repeat yourself, etc

Express Scripts is the WORST company I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. They deny medications even after a doctor has provided a PA and refuses to even cover medications that they previously did cover. If anyone’s employer is considering changing to Express Scripts I suggest they immediately contact their HR department and do everything in their power to stop the conversion to express scripts. Pitiful isn’t an adequate description for this company. Criminal is more appropriate.

My most recent experience with express scripts was nothing short of a nightmare. On June 15, 2025, my insurance changed regarding a medication I am prescribed. Express Scripts was forcing me to either use their mail order pharmacy or have the prescription transferred to Walgreens. The only downside to having it transferred to Walgreens is the fact that Express Scripts suddenly decided they would no longer cover a certain dosage of the medication I was on. So I would have to pay over $1000 for a month supply. Otherwise, I could use their mail order pharmacy for a 90 day supply for $200 co-pay. Obviously, I chose to use mail order. My doctor electronically submitted my prescription to express scripts very early on Tuesday morning June 17.
After it had been “processing” for more than 48 hours, I called customer service to inquire on its status. Shortly after that phone call express scripts marked my prescription as “too early to fill” and gave a date of July 16 for the projected fill date. So I had to call back AGAIN and have them re-review my prescription history so that they could see I would be out of medication as of June 21 (the prescription I was trying to have filled had previously been prescribed on May 24). After a 45 minutes phone call and several transfers later, the prescription was back in process. Then on Friday — more than 72 hours after receiving the prescription — the prescription status reflected another delay, stating that it was under “drug interaction review”. I had to call Express Scripts a THIRD time and explain that I have been on this medication for a while and my physician is well aware of anything else I take.
I reminded them that I was out of medication and was due to take my next dose on Saturday, June 21. I was transferred four different times and ended up having to speak directly to a pharmacist during this phone call. He claimed he put an emergency rush on my order after he lifted the drug interaction review during that phone call. The next week rolls around. And there were no changes in my prescription status for five ADDITIONAL business days, even though they knew that I was out of medication at this point and that they had supposedly put an emergency rush on the processing of the prescription. In total, I placed SIX phone calls to customer service, and it took Express Scripts NINE business days to process and ship my medication.
It is absolutely ludicrous that they strong armed me into using mail order pharmacy to save hundreds of dollars, yet had ZERO sense of urgency getting my prescription filled and shipped out to me. I have NEVER encountered such a lengthy delay when having ANY prescription filled locally (even when a medication has been out of stock). And I still don’t understand why it took nine business days to process and ship my order when it was glaringly obvious I had been prescribed this medication many times in the past. (It was NOT a new medication OR dose for me!!)

Here is the ULTIMATE example of a "sub" company "specialty pharmacy" - whatever that is in the business of NOT assisting people who need their medications. Let's start here - left hand has NO IDEA and DOES NOT CARE what the right hand is doing. Simply put they are completely missing ANY customer service. Adding on to that - their wait time on hold is averaging 40 minutes each time you have to call - and THAT is a great deal if you truly need to get those medications. Rude, threatening and just plain unknowledgeable covers the "phone" people - IF you ever talk to them.
NOW for their reliability. NONE... Let me repeat that NONE. I think they just don't give a damn. No. I apologize. That is incorrect. I KNOW they don't. I am going to personally turn them over to the State Attorney General of Washington. This is seriously dangerous for patients who need the meds. I have had coverage through numerous insurance companies over the years. There have been a couple that have been more difficult. THIS IS an impossible situation. They cause so much anxiety - just having to know you are going to have to go through this. PLEASE CLOSE THIS COMPANY'S doors - they are a danger to peoples health. I was forced to provide at least 1 * or the review would not go through. I would give them NO STARS if allowed.

I am completely out of meds that are needed and were ordered for a refill three weeks prior. I called after 2 weeks because they had not arrived. They had no record of my order or the confirmation number I had from the order. They reordered the refill while I was on the phone but would not expedite the order even though it would be close to the day I would run out. Not receiving the order as expected, I checked the status and IT WAS CANCELLED AGAIN. I have refills on it. When I called to inquire, the call center fought with me as I had a question for the pharmacist.
The woman was rude and had a thick accent so it was hard to communicate. She left me on hold for 12 min. Then came back twice to ask what I needed from the Pharmacist. I told her it was a question about the medication and wanted to leave it at that. I had to be demanding to be put through. The pharmacist was helpful but the rest of the experience was so unprofessional. I called a local Walgreens that was closing in 30 minutes and they were so helpful in filling the script for me before they closed. Needless to say, I will not be using Express Scripts any longer.

Stay away from Express Scripts when shopping for insurance. They will not fill what your doctor prescribes even if you meet the standards they set for themselves. They do not have a physician to make decisions on your health care needs, only a pharmacist, who is not licensed to make diagnoses on your behalf. They will use the term “not medically necessary” to justify not covering your prescriptions even if your doctor deems it fit and you meet their own criteria. I recorded the representatives who told me the criteria. I met the criteria back in February. They have used every excuse, beginning with “your doctor did not fill out form, your doctor did not fill out form correctly (she did)."
I did an appeals and an external appeals process using a company paid for by Express Scripts. They denied 6 prescriptions for my diabetes, the last one saying that they recommended metformin. If they had bothered to look, Express scripts has been paying for my metformin for around 4 years. Metformin and the samples of Rebelsys from my doctor have failed to bring my A1C down due to regular steroid injections from other health issues. Run from any insurance that has Express scripts. Then their prior authorization expired for a med I had been on for a decade and they wanted to perform a coverage review with my doctor. Due to a broken process it took six weeks for them to accept the form my doctor's office sent to them five times. I offered to pay my share and what insurance would have paid if they would just send me the refill while they played their paperwork game. No concept of being part of healthcare delivery system or ethics and health impact of denying medication and refusing to fill until their charade played out (it took seven weeks before their delivery arrived). They use Medi-span for their price a medication tool and while it get the patient co-pay right, it errors wildly in units of measure and dosages for non-tablet medications.
As long as this system doesn't connect to their inventory or delivery system then it's just a comedic annoyance but could cause harm if relied upon for anything besides price estimates. I have empathy for ES staff and find if I treat them politely, they are polite in return but important parts of their system need some executive and technical attention.

I do not like the dual verification system. User ID, password, Microsoft code, verify-- lose ES webpage and start all over. Next ES will want my dog's name, model of vehicle, my med history before I can get a pill. Gonna start working on a new prescription option--- copays are getting ridiculous. In the past, ES reps have expedited a refill when I am getting in short supply. Last time I asked for a week earlier shipment and they would not fill. Had to go back to doctor to locally fill a 30 day supply. Just should NOT happen. Now I know what ES actually means--/ Extra S__T!!!

If I could give them zero stars, I would! I just had my annual physical with my doctor. I'm doing great with all my medications except one, which is not a true necessity. My doctor entered all my prescriptions in Express Scripts and they automatically filled everyone of them!! The amount taken out of my checking account was $179!! As a retired veteran living on a budget, this is devastating. These medications are not even annotated as "auto-refill". This is ridiculous!! When I truly need medications, I can't get it, but if I don't need it, they are going to fill it and charge me anyway. Let me, the customer be in charge of ordering my medications!! They charge me $13, and some $38, "shipping fee" and place it all in one bag!!!

It is very frustrating to use Express Scripts. The automated system will first ask you for an identifier that is remotely ever memorized by most people. And then you have to jump hoops to get to a customer service representative who are mostly unsympathetic to your problem. Then they oftentimes cancel your prescription without giving you notice and then you’re left with shortage of supply. This is a dangerous game they play because most people rely on their medications for their subsistence. The only thing going for them is that they are the only contracted mail order pharmacy for my work insurance so whether I like it or not, I’m stuck with them. I wish we had a better option.

They "think" it gets sent back if I'm not here. Their text update informed me my prescription is "about" to ship. Who cares? They should reserve contact for when they have specifics. Customer service does what they can, but I don't think they have direct contact with the pharmacy and they seem to have as much information as I do. I switched from bad to worse. READ THIS - IT MIGHT SAVE YOU THOUSANDS. I don't know where to begin with how disappointed I am with choosing this prescription benefit. Trust me, this insurance policy and coverage is not worth paying for. If you've just been hired at a job and this is the insurance offered, don't sign up. Not only do I pay approximately $100/week for the coverage ($400/month), I put $100/month in an HSA/FSA to pay for a monthly appointment and medication cost, and I'm still coming out of pocket to pay for prescriptions.
Not only do I have to go to 3 different pharmacies every month to get my medications, they don't even cover my 2 of the 5. For the Gabapentin and lacosamide, I use GoodRX and pay out-of-pocket $30-$40/month each. That brings me to about $600+ every month to pay for medications!
First, I use a specialty pharmacy to get my Sublocade shot (Express says I can't have it sent to my local pharmacy or directly to my doctor). Second is my local pharmacy. Express says they won't deliver my Omeprazole, Lithium, Gabapentin or Lacosamide; I have to use my local pharmacy to pick it up. The 3rd pharmacy I'm forced to use is Express Scripts. They require this mail-in trash for my Adderall. I've been on a 15mg, extended-release dose of Adderall for years. Missing a dose leads to withdrawal, and it begins 24 hours after missing a dose. I've talked with several reps and "managers" trying to explain that I can't miss a dose. Every month for the past 3 months this has happened.
My previous insurance allowed me to go to one pharmacy, once a month and received all of my refills. Apparently, Express Scripts is false advertisement. For the 3rd month in a row, my prescription for 15mg, extended release Adderall was sent in 12 days early. Express did not even create the label for delivery of my package until the day after I was due to be out of medication. Two of my medications are ridiculously classed as controlled substances, so I'm only allowed a 30-day supply. No extras. Period. That's the law and I'm familiar with it. I quit drinking and using 12+ years ago and I've been on this cocktail of medications for over a decade and I'm not planning on changing what works.
I made Express fully aware of these details 3 months ago and they've failed to get me my Adderall by the time I was scheduled to be out. I'm not asking for anything extra or early. I'm only asking for what I pay for l. Express Scripts is aware of my situation. This month, they recommended my doctor call in a 7-day prescription to my local pharmacy to hold me over. I tried explaining this would not work with this medication. It's a controlled substance, but the rep from Express thought she knew more than me and gave me their name and number for the pharmacist to call when I run into issues at my local pharmacy. As I predicted, the pharmacy wouldn't fill it. I gave the number to the pharmacist and I listened to the Express rep tell the pharmacist they couldn't cover it, put a lock on it and made it so I couldn't even pay out of pocket for it.
So there I was. 24 hours since my last dose. Standing in the pharmacy, feeling my guts bubbling, my emotions heating and my temper shortening. I knew this would happen. I didn't stay clean and sober for 12 years because I give up when life gets hard. I had already split my last 3 capsules in half to make six halves. Something is better than nothing and if I hadn't done that, I would've missed 4 nights of work because my medication showed up 4 days late. Splitting medications is considered deviating from the prescribed dosage without proper direction of prescriber and can be considered misuse of medication. Faced with the choice of withdrawal and losing my job, or clumsily splitting the tiny beads inside a capsule in half to save my job, I believe I made the right choice and my doctor agreed.

If you can, avoid ES at all costs. My new 2025 insurance requires me to use them. Even if I don’t actually get things filled through them, they’re my overall PBM. I have had to go more than two months without a medication because they didn’t manage the prior authorization (for something I’ve been on for years). There are constant delays in service. On one of my prescriptions they keep trying to fill 7 days after I run out. So that means they process 7 days too late, then can take days to actually deliver. Their app is terrible. There’s no chat option or email. You always have to end up calling. Once the price I was seeing and the actual price were off and ES wanted me to get on the phone with THEIR IT. Why would I talk to your IT to trouble shoot a production defect? The phone reps argue with you as if it’s a nonprofessional conversation on the street. The original reps can’t help at all. So you always have to talk to a manager.
Who say things like the patient knows and manages their own medication it’s not ES fault for X. Their the PBM they manage everything about my prescription plan. Many times when they screw up an order they try to get you to PAY for faster shipping. Then you have to argue with them for free faster shipping. Then they tell you that you should be thankful. Express scripts also has no clue about the laws. If you’re managing accounts in different states you should probably know the laws of any given states pharmacy/prescription service. They try to hard to make you fill three months at a time. In many cases not giving you any other option. Which should be fine but my state only allows many medications to be 30 day supply. Even ones that aren’t controlled substances. So because ES didn’t know they can only fill 30 days at a time I had a big break in my medication regimen.
If you catch them in their lies then they try to blame the mail for bad service. But when your medication is delivered it’s just some random kid in a damaged personal car. Like as if they use Instacart. So it can’t be the mail. Also, ALWAYS screenshot any messages or status’s on their app. They will change things without a history to go back on and then tell you you’re wrong.

The last time, I called on a Wednesday. A woman answered. I told her this was the second time this had happened to me this month alone, and we were only three months into the year. She apologized and told me, since this happened multiple times, they would be switching the carrier used to deliver my medication and that they would expedite a new prescription for me. She told me it would be here Monday. Monday came and nothing. Tuesday, nothing. Wednesday, nothing. So I called back that Wednesday night, which would have been March 19th, and spoke to a man who said this is not something ES does, and that the woman for some reason LIED to me about everything and didn't even place another order for me. That's absolutely ridiculous. This man I spoke to also told me, if the medication didn't show up by the 24th, to call and get a refund for everything.
The medication showed up March 26th. I called for my refund twice. The first time I spoke to a man who said he couldn't do anything for me since the medication showed up, which makes no sense. If I had called the 24th or 25th, this would have been honored because the medication was still over a month late. This didn't feel right to me at all, so I called back and spoke to someone else who managed to at least get me credits to my account for the expedited shipping I had to do since ES was a month late with my initial order. I'm wondering why this didn't happen the first time. Anyway, the credits are useless because I'm NEVER ordering here again.
My experiences using ES as a pharmacy have been horrible and extremely stressful, constantly wondering if my order will actually get to me, paying for medication twice + expedited shipping for the majority of my second orders, and the stress of dealing with the worst customer service people. It's extremely depressing that such a good health insurance, Cigna, partners with such a horrible pharmacy.

I have been on the same medication for the past 8 years. Three of those years the medication has been approved through Express Scripts with a prior authorization process (always a hassle but it gets done) and my doctor's letter of medical necessity. Suddenly this year, they want to deny the medication (same brand, dosage, quantity) zero changes!!! They claim that they need a letter from the doctor stating why it would adversely affect my health to take the generic (I am allergic to the generic). My Dr sent them an updated letter in December of 2024 explaining why along with my office notes. Three months later, three denials later, I am now filing a claim with the Florida Insurance Commissioner. My monthly out-of-pocket cost for the medication would be over $800. Don't bother trying to call Express Scripts, they just transfer you from person to person and disconnect the call!

Another nightmare call with Express Scripts' always terrible customer service. I needed to change my credit card number. I can do it online. Great, so far so good. But, oops, there is an order being processed with the now canceled credit card number. I call their customer service. I know it won't go well. It NEVER does. They ALWAYS find a way to disappoint me. They excel at providing completely poor customer service. They are pros at it. They are using the old card number for an order that is processing. I can't fight the robot answering machine. I MUST use it first to describe my problem before they will allow me to talk to a human. Nothing it wants me to do will solve my problem. They torture me. Finally after barely tolerating the numbing process that goes on and on, I say representative and am connected.
The best course of action the human says is to cancel the order being processed and then place a new order with the new credit card number. I'm told it's impossible to simply change the credit card number for that order. She sends the notice to cancel the order. THEN she tells me it will take 72 hours, and I will receive a cancellation notice. Then I will have to (experience more torture when I MUST) call them back to replace the order with the new credit card number, which is now listed as the default and ONLY credit card number for my account. I hate them and their stupid processes developed by stupid people that make stupid decisions with their stupid rules and stupid systems.

I wish I could give zero stars. Actually, what I wish is that I had a choice. My insurance company force me to use this HORRIBLE company. I have had nothing but problems. I have now missed a dose of medication and am sick. The order was made a week ago, it's still "processing". I've called. Spent several hours on the phone. It takes up to 30 minutes just to speak to a human. I've had empty packages arrive, with no medication because the plastic bags they use are so cheap the medication literally fell out in transit. The pills look totally different than when I received them from a real pharmacy. Smaller, brittle, they fall apart or disintegrate. I have zero trust in Express Scripts. They DO NOT CARE IF YOU LIVE OR DIE. I'm not even being dramatic. It's disgusting that they continue to make money and treat hard working Americans like they are disposable.

I am extremely dissatisfied with the service. There are frequently issues with prescriptions, and I would give zero stars if I could. Every time I call, they ask too many questions, and no one seems to be able to resolve the problem. Most of the time, I’m just being transferred from one person to another without any solution.

Worst pharmacy ever. I don't know why they switch to online pharmacy. Discounted price is a joke. Walgreens or CVS is better even Amazon pharmacy. They don't know what they are saying. I don't know why the company switch to this insurance.

I have used Express Scripts for years, but for the last two years it has gone down to less than 1 rating. Most of the time they have delays on get my meds, have trouble getting the Doctor for refills, I would not be using them if the insurance didn't make me.

Express scripts does everything in their ability to deny prescriptions, I'm a health care provider my self in an NYC cancer center and it's a shame that my work's benefits includes Express Scripts. I have been out of my medication for 2 weeks now. Called them 9 times in the past 2 weeks. 1- My doctor sent the prior authorization they requested, they automatically denied it same day. 2- I started the appeal process, asked my Dr to resend the information they needed. 3- After they received the 2nd prior authorization with the information they requested they informed me that I need to join a new program called Omada. 4- Joined Omada and got a confirmation from Omada that I met the requirement for the medication.
5- 3 days later which is today called to check on the status was told that I have to wait another 6 days since the process may take 2-3 weeks. 6- Right now it's 20mins already and I'm speaking to a supervisor that isn't able to help me since she has no access to the appeal department and the appeal department is not answering her phone call. I will reach out to my executives at the hospital and request to consider to change the plan to somebody else.

This is just an awful company. I live within 5 blocks of multiple pharmacies and instead of picking up my prescriptions easily and conveniently I now have to deal with this awful company. I don't want to use them. I shouldn't have to, but my insurance is now making me waste my time dealing with their awful customer service and continually outages of my medication.

The executives running this company should be arrested and jailed. During enrollment I checked their formulary and estimated costs. During enrollment the prices I was shown do not match the bills I’m now receiving. I have no serious illnesses and have been told I need to spend $2000.00 before catastrophic coverage begins. I take testosterone. They ship your medicine before sending you a bill. In only two months I have been charged nearly $1200.00. I am being cheated and I know it. Never had a problem with prescriptions in the past. I’m will begin tomorrow sending documentation and complaints to Federal, State, and Local entities. I will share my experience with news organizations. Don’t forget to contact your elected politicians. The investors have infected healthcare with the greed virus.

I wish I had done my homework before switching to Express Scripts. I am having similar issues to the 4,000 awful reviews already posted here. Seizure medications for my son have been "processing" for 2 weeks after confirming everything with his doctor, and after speaking to a representative, there is no clear timetable as to when they will be shipped. Without these meds, my son will typically go into status epilepticus.
Now I am being told that if I cancel the order, it will take 72 hours to process the cancelation on their end which would then allow me to get them from my local pharmacy at a nominal fee. As such, I will need to pay out of pocket for these very expensive drugs in the short term since I am running low and I have no confidence that they will be delivered any time soon. Once I get confirmation that they have shipped, I will cancel all subsequent refills and go back to Walgreens. Please heed all the warnings and do not use Express Scripts for drugs that are critical to your well being. Stick with your local pharmacy. Sure you may be able to save money as their website promotes, but it will be at a risk to your health. It is not worth the stress!

Outrageously the worst company I have ever had to deal with. It is a great responsibility to hold and manage medication for any individual. The deceit, punctuality, inconceivable difficulty of getting any semblance of customer service should be illegal in this regard. I would much rather drink toilet water through a straw than send my medication through Express Scripts.

I had my GLP1 med since 2024. I needed the prior auth, to be expected, and went on my way. Now, 2025 and all the hype of a GLP1, Express Scripts has lost utter control and EVERYONE I speak to says they needed a NEW prior auth (even when they just obtained one for the new year) for their GLP1 and EVERYONE says it gets denied with the EXACT same reason. "No baseline BMI was provided by provider".
Even on these reviews people are saying the same thing. I KNOW my doctor gave you the baseline BMI not once, not twice but all 3 times they RESENT the prior auth. I ended up missing my injections for 4 straight weeks. Mind you I have been taking this for a year now! When my prior auth was finally appealed/approved, they BACK DATED my coverage saying it was approved on 2/25/25. I have screen shots showing I was still " pending approval until 3/5 but it magically disappeared from my profile online. When I informed them via email of false documentation, and my screen shots to prove it, someone quickly called me saying it was just a typo error. I did all the things and I have even had OMADA for a year as well, which has done nothing to help me except weigh me in and let me see my data. Express Scripts, stop with the GLP1 crap. Lies after lies.

Horrible and even more horrible, Express Scripts. That's the best way when summing up this drug mail order insurance company. I merely requested that they stop automatically placing and refilling a 90 days supply prescription order. Until I needed them via the selected manual ordering process. So what did they do? They've entirely cancelled my future 3 refills remaining on the authorized prescription! I mean, how stupid does it get with their incompetence?

Absolutely ridiculous. I have been informed to change my prescription to a 90 day prescription and change my pharmacy to Walgreens and here I am with Express Scripts suddenly only filling 30 days even though my prescription is 90 days cancer meds. Meds are being approved one min and the next they are denied. No one knows their job and can give any explanation. They love to tell you to call your pharmacy or the insurance just to end up back with them and still no explanation.
