I am writing to file a formal complaint about my experience at the Menards location on 95th Street and Western in Chicago. I arrived to pick up an online order and, after my order ticket was scanned, I was told that before I could enter the pickup area an employee needed to search the trunk of my personal vehicle. I was shocked and very uncomfortable with this request. My car is my personal property and I keep private and personal information in my trunk. Being asked to allow a store employee to search my vehicle felt like a serious invasion of my privacy.
When I explained that I was not comfortable allowing anyone to look inside my personal vehicle, I was told it was “company policy” and that I could not enter the area unless they searched my trunk. Because I refused, I was forced to remain outside while an employee brought my order out to me. As a paying customer who simply came to pick up an order I already purchased, this situation made me feel embarrassed, disrespected, and violated. At no point before arriving was I informed that a search of my personal vehicle might be required just to pick up merchandise. If this is truly Menards' policy, customers should be clearly informed in advance when placing online orders so they can decide whether they are comfortable with such a requirement. Policies like this, when not explained properly, create a very negative customer experience.
Because of how this situation was handled, I left feeling extremely uncomfortable and disappointed. I have shopped at Menards in the past, but after this experience I am seriously reconsidering returning. I would appreciate an explanation of this policy and why customers’ personal vehicles are being searched simply to pick up merchandise. I also hope Menards will reconsider how this policy is enforced so customers do not feel their privacy is being violated.

I recently ordered a countertop for an island from Menards. It was damaged which was discovered the day the installer and crew unpackaged it. Menards had me take pictures and fill out a form and then referred me to their manufacturer, Midwest Manufacturing. More pictures, more forms. After a few false starts, I was offered a replacement which I did receive undamaged. However I incurred many extra expenses along the way including a service fee from the installer for the initial installation date, an additional fee from the person whom I hired to pick it up to return it and pick up the new one.
None of this was reimbursed by Midwest nor any compensation offered by the Menards store manager for these additional expenses. My countertop cost almost double due to a damaged product that likely left the manufacturer that way. I spent hours emailing, writing letters, etc. for an issue I didn’t cause. Very frustrated at the quality control issue and the lack of concern about customer satisfaction. I won’t be special ordering from Menards again.

Been shopping here for years and it keeps getting worse and worse, for one 90% of the stuff they sell is absolute junk. I’ve been there more for returns than I can even count, their plumbing, electrical and hardware department is in complete disarray. Almost every fitting bin has different parts in it than what the bin says so make sure you check every single part you grab. Odds are it’s not going to be what you're looking for.

We bought an item from Menards.com. First, they overcharged us for shipping. Second, the item comes broken. When we tried to find an 800 number for customer service, we never found one. We emailed their online order department and never got a response. We emailed their online order dept again, but never got any response. We have a broken item, lost the money we paid, never got any support, and our recommendation is to avoid this business by all means. They are the worst.

I have always received excellent service from Menards. I am a general contractor and Christopher ** does a great job in the lumber department. He checks my orders. Looks them over to see if I may have missed anything. I can call ahead with an order and he will have it ready for me when I get there. Gives great advice on products. He is always friendly. Professional and I feel like he always has my back. I would just like to say a very big thank you to Christopher ** for all the help you have given me through the years. I really really appreciate you.

Always liked Menards and got free shipping boxes out of the recycling bins whenever I went. Then some cocky store manager informed me that he wouldn't allow me to gather boxes anymore. Just a stingy and unfriendly practice. I'll go elsewhere.

I can't believe that people shop here and take this rebate process seriously. You have to mail in a paper rebate form every time you make a purchase? This feels entirely like a scam. They could certainly make this process digital if they valued their customers. They have absolutely made it just difficult enough that most people are not going to take the time to go through the process for every purchase unless it is a high value purchase. It's just a marketing ploy that they can run in their advertisements to differentiate themselves from the other big box stores. They will absolutely be a last resort for me if I can't find what I need from one of the other stores.

Pickup makes no sense. Go thru drive thru no good for smaller items ok. Go inside, look for signs to pickup, none to be seen great. Wait in a crazy line. Finally my turn. No pickup is in the back of the store. Should've used drive thru. Some good prices but the stores layout and customer service is laughable.

I purchased two vanities and tops recently. When product arrived it didn’t look the online photo and we wanted to exchange it for a different color. We were told it would have a 25% restock fee. The product was transferred in one day so I truly think if they cared they could send it back pretty easy. I paid the fee and purchased elsewhere. I will be using Home Depot for all of my remodeling work from now on.

I just purchased a 100 gallon propane tank from this store and went to have it filled, I never even got home with it and the pop off valve blew on it. Went to Menards and spoke with Richard to store manager, which told me, "Sorry about your luck Pal." I would assume this is just the Menards way. To sell a faulty product and hope no one gets killed with it. I used to spend in the range of 30.000 with my employment a year, But won't spend a dime there now. Good luck to anyone who purchased a propane tank there. Didn't have a zero stars to hit.

You got us but we will advertise on all media sites available. I am a heart patient. Don't need dumb corporate or store employees to treat customers like this.... There was never a sign.. I bought a snowblower yesterday for a storm coming in. My back has gone bad with age and I now need a self propelled so I purchased the new one and gave my old one away. After getting the box out of my truck and doing a 3 hour assembly with poor instruction, I had it together, this did not include engine related assembly). I then added the oil, and then the gas. The gas then proceeded to poor out all over my garage from under the housing. Menards doesn’t have product reviews so I went online to see reviews and I found this to be common with this product.
1) It’s my problem figuring out how to load the 300lb snow blower in my truck to get the problem addressed.
2) They don’t take items that have had gas put in them back at the store. It’s okay to have gas all over my garage but not in there store or back lot.
3) I have to take it to a designated repair center, they don’t know where and will call me tomorrow with the information.
4) They have my money and I have 6 to 8 inches of snow to shovel with a bad back.
In short all of the problems with their defective product are mine to deal with without help from them.
I have a Lowe’s down the road from them, Menards won’t be my place to buy my DIY and other supplies in the future.

Very disappointed in Menards at Columbus, Nebraska. Went to the store to buy a battery. $200 battery. Took my battery in his core charge. I had to have an in-store credit for my courtyard. I didn't buy my battery there. It wasn't a return. Very rude all the way up to customer service, even though I was at the checkout line, employees standing around doing nothing except for telling me what I had to do when they could just put it in a cart and take it up there themselves. Very poor customer service. I spent $20,000 there so right? I think I'll go out of town to Home Depot.

Although you save big money at Menards, the customer service in store is terrible! The girls at customer service always act like you're bothering them and often I have to travel around the store to find one employee to help, and when you find that employee, they say, "It’s not my department!" It’s a huge store. What the heck? Management really needs to study their employees. I worked in the Customer Service industry. All my life retired with that under my belt and Menards doesn’t have it going on.

Purchased a Richmond Water Heater from Menards, model# 6G40-36F3. These have a faulty gas control valve where the pilot light won't function properly. Rheem (the company who makes Richmond) and menards will both try to pass the responsibility to one another even though the product is well within warranty. This leaves the consumer stuck with no hot water and way too much stress and headache...buy your major appliances anywhere else. Save yourself the frustration.

Poor communication and misleading items on website. It said the store had the item in stock on 12/29/25 ordered it. Expected to pick up at store today order still says on order and you can only email the help center. I can’t cancel the order from my account which I would like to do so I can get the item I want elsewhere. Right now I’m out the money and have no item and it took 3 days for customer service to reply saying they’re looking into it and will get back to me with an update later. Not very reassuring. Today I had an appliance emergency and could really use the funds that are tied up on an order I have zero updates on. Used to shop here a lot, but I’ll merrily take my business elsewhere. Feels like a real “bait and switch”.

During Covid, this Menards store was having people arrested for not wearing masks. I was told to put on a mask or they would call the police. I said I would leave and was told to not come back if I didn't wear a mask. I told them I would never darken their door again.

Every time I order something online and don’t pick it up, I get a text that they cancelled my order. Only problem is that they don’t return the money unless you go inside the store and complain. They rip off millions each year this way.

I ordered smoke alarms from Menards online. As soon as they charged my card they cancelled the order saying the item is no longer in stock and they aren't going to be getting more. I've sent them an email asking for my refund and got a response saying they were going to give me back $11.08, when I was charged almost $70.00, and still have gotten no response from them. Also wasn't given the money they said they would refund. I'd go ANYWHERE ELSE to shop. ANYWHERE ELSE.

The store is awesome and literally has everything you could want. MY issue, the rebates/sales. They will give you a 100$ item for 30$ with a mail in rebate, but be careful, the rebate that I received came back in Menards bucks, NOT a refund. So they give you a rebate that you can then only use in their store.

1. We were told by an associate that the particular item we wanted was not in stock and to order it online. 2. Ordered it online. 3. Needed to return it and was told we were required to pay a restocking fee of $67. 4. Aaron, the so-called manager argued that it was 'their policy' despite the fact we were told to order it online because of their inventory. 5. We were penalized for following THEIR instructions to order the product online. Skip this sort of disrespect and misleading advice at Menard's. Check out Lowe's or online companies rather than using your hard-earned money for deception and thievery.

Earlier today I purchased a Performax 500-Watt power converter which didn’t work. Two hours later I tried to return it without the receipt that the cashier never gave me. They expect you to know to collect a receipt after the cashier has already given you back your change by hand (I’m 53). They checked their cameras to verify that I purchased the item. They acknowledged that I rightfully purchased the item yet They Called police on me and made me leave with faulty item. Police made me so uncomfortable that I forgot the performax converter on top of my car and drove off. I was offered less than what I paid.
West Milwaukee Police Department got involved in a civil matter and chose their side so I left with nothing. No store credit no money and no item. I need a lawyer. Both parties are PROFOUNDLY racist. They’ll never get another dollar out of me. I have a video for proof concerning Menards employees on Miller Parkway. Enough is enough 😒

I sent in my rebates and made copies. The amount was $10.41. I got the rebate for $8.10. May sound trivial but what is the point of shopping at Menards for rebates but not get them all? I can go to Home depot or Lowe's and get better prices if I'm not getting the full rebates coming to me. I tried calling them but they push medical insurance and ADT things for elderly people for the first 5 min, then you have no choice to talk to anyone. I went to their website but that wasn't working either. Tried to put my info on the online form and it wouldn't take anything So discussed with Menards, It use to be a great place.

Beware of ordering something online from Menards particularly special order. I ordered a chimney cap, which was inferior in quality to say the least. The dimensions were not fully listed. The item was paper thin and did not represent what was advertised. They charge a 25% stocking fee plus shipping back. I lost one third of my money. They even told me that it doesn’t matter what’s wrong with it, you pay the 25% restocking fee plus shipping. Worst customer service ever. This is the only item I ever bought from them and I will never buy from them again. I lost $50 on this item.

Take your business to Home Depot or Lowe's. At least there you will actually get your 11% rebate. I've sent my receipts in twice, spent thousands with Menards. Been waiting a 1 1/2 yrs. I have yet to receive mine. At least with homedepot! You know you'll receive it in your email and you'll never have to waste a stamp or ink to print it out!

I would like to warn all the homeowners out there to be very cautious before trusting Menards. Their garage and shed kids are supposed to be DIY, but you will find out. They will deliver extremely subpar lumber that is gray and cracked. The price do not match up to code. When I went into the store, I did not know how to use their design computer for designing a garage. The gentleman working came over and helped me with my 24 x 36 garage. I was asking him about where garage doors go slope of roof, these type of questions, so he was clicking through the options to get to those things to answer my questions. Well one of the things he skipped over was picking a color upset garage, so we had everything lined up. I took the plans to the Inspector to get them approved to make sure I was allowed to build that type of structure on my property. The inspector approved it.
I took the plans back to Menards to pay for it, not once did the person that took $12,000 for my garage kit asked me, "Hey why didn’t you pick a color? Why didn’t you pick this?" They just said sure took my money, set up delivery dates which their delivery is another horrible story of the morning going to right now. Lol. When all the material got to my house, the guy putting my garage together came over that "Man, all of your metal is silver and I’m ignorant to building anything." I said, "Well don’t you just paint it." He said, "No silly. You’re supposed to order the color you want and it comes in that color." So I went up to the store, spoke to the system manager. He said, "You need to read your contract, we do not return any special order items at all." So I went home, read the contract and it said yes, they do return special items, but a 25% restocking fee is applied.
Obviously the gentleman in the store should’ve helped me a little further but ultimately it is my fault for not picking a color or not understanding how to use their DIY station so I wouldn’t talk to the manager. Manager said the only way he’d even agree to the special return items of the metal is for a 45% restocking fee. And I explained to the general manager that your assistant manager said there was a contract and that says a 25% restocking fee. He says he doesn’t care, it’s his way or the highway. You pick. Well I can’t afford to basically buy another set of $4500 metal, so please take my store as a caution not to trust Menards.

I bought $11,036 worth of maple cabinets from this Menards one year ago. Menards made one man, alone, deliver these large units. The cabinets, unsurprising, fell and broke off the truck. Not the delivery man's fault, one man cannot handle them. They were left with me anyway. I have been calling/emailing/texting with menards customer service on and off for 12 months, and Menards has not settled this. One unit was replaced. Menards has not paid for the repairs of the damage or replaced the other cabinets. They have not discounted for the gauges and scratches of the remaining cabinets. Beyond a delivery issue, this is a failure of product management, warranty fulfillment, and quality assurance. Spare yourself the time, money, and headache.

The inventory is ALWAYS wrong. You can never trust the inventory status on the website and if you call, the employees will lie to you and tell you that they have products in stock that they do not actually have. Menards' primary function is to maintain inventory so that people can GIVE THEM MONEY. I know Menards focuses on TAKE THE MONEY, but they first have to provide the customer with a product to purchase!

I ordered 2 basement windows for my house and was told 2 months! Got message from Menards that they were in so wife and I drove the 26 miles to get them! Went to pickup desk and these guys kept looking at computer and finally said that maybe 1 window was here but come other didn’t get ordered! Well after further looking neither window was ordered and assured me they would be ordered on Monday by dept manager! Got a letter from Menards with new order and receipt with order date 7/9/2025 and estimated delivery 8/20/2025.
Decided to check on them on 9/5/2025 on their website and to my surprise it was cancelled on 15th of July so I call to check with store and sure enough they’ve been canceled. I tell them I want my money back and they say I will have to come into store to do this with the CC so again drive the 26 miles and they give me my money back and as I’m walking out I look at receipt and it’s only for one window and I tell the guy it was 2 windows so he tries to do another credit and finally says it’s over 90 days and all they can give me is store credit. I say no and he tells me the the credit works for anything in store and I say I have to buy the windows again but not from you and that doesn’t help! Much to my dismay I take the credit! The manager was there and really showed me no remorse so I won’t be ordering anything again from Menards!
