Lemonade has been a nightmare thus far. I had quite a few vet. visits for one paw injury on one dog. I submitted all the bills, which should be covered under their policy minus the $250. deductible. That same day I also spoke with an actual person off and on of 90 min. regarding the bills, etc. She said they would get back to me within the week. 17 days later, Lemonade has never gotten back to me. I've spoken with someone several times and am always cut off. They now tell me they have lost my records. It goes on and on. Truly, this is very poorly run and appears to be a big rip off.
We completely understand your frustration and this is not the experience we want anyone to have. We'd really like the chance to look into everything and make sure your records are located and your claims are properly reviewed. I signed up after reading positive reviews about Lemonade Insurance. However, I paid $86.00 a month for 4 months, submitted 2 claims..and both were rejected. Everything I had to pay for out of pocket, nothing went towards his deductible. I absolutely do NOT recommend Lemonade. If you've had a good experience with them, then you're one of the lucky ones.
We hear you and an experience like this after signing up with such high hopes is genuinely disappointing. We'd really like the chance to look into both claims and make sure everything was handled correctly. We bought Lemonade for our Westie when she was about 18 months old. We were her second family. My partner thought it was a waste of money, despite the low monthly premium, but I disagreed and bought it. We didn’t use Lemonade until she was diagnosed in September 2025 with a trigeminal nerve sheath tumor next to her brain stem. The diagnosis was devastating - she was 5.5 years old and other than the complete loss of muscle on the right side of her head, was symptom free. The veterinary neurologist told us we might have as much as a year without treatment. The only treatment was radiation and that shrinks the tumor but doesn’t kill it, delaying the inevitable by 1 -3 years. My partner went through chemotherapy in early 25, so we are well aware of how cancer treatments can destroy quality of life. We chose to enjoy life with her for as long as we had.
That turned out to be about 8 months. She was herself for about 6 months - all in to whatever she was doing - then we noticed she was sleeping a bit more, playing less, sometimes reluctant to jump up on things. At 8 months, her symptoms started piling up very quickly and she was losing ground by the day. We let her go in early May 2026. Having Lemonade to remove the consideration of cost from all possible treatment avenues was a relief. I knew she was getting the best possible care we could give her. We never hesitated to make an appointment with the neurologist or her primary vet because of cost considerations. Knowing that once we were past the deductible Lemonade would reimburse 70% removed most of the concern about expense meant that she got the care she needed when she needed it, including at the end.
Lemonade reimburses immediately. It’s all mobile, and there are options for uploading required documentation for claims. My one surprise was a mid December vet visit that I didn’t get around to claiming until the new year. My understanding was that you have up to 180 days to file a claim, but the deductible resets at the calendar year, so the claim went towards the deductible for the new year. Other than that, there were no surprises, and the entire claim process was always straightforward.
You do need to get and keep veterinary notes and invoices for each claim, and of course, pre existing conditions are excluded. For us, that was nighttime urinary incontinence (she was spayed too early) and apparently included UTIs, so it’s best to get it as soon after you get a new pet as possible. If we get another dog, I will absolutely get Lemonade as soon as we bring him/her home.
We're so sorry about your sweet girl. What a life she lived and what a family she had in you both. Thank you for trusting us with her care and for writing something so honest and beautiful even in the middle of such a difficult time. We're thinking of you and your partner and wishing you both comfort and healing.

Worked in 3 different tech companies over the past 25 years. Lemonade is for the tech-savvy consumer and they condescendingly let you know that is an expectation regarding consumers of their product/service. They support IOS and Google platforms whilst using their app, but do not allow interaction via PC/windows. Not a deal breaker, but if you like to keep records via PC consideration.
They do process claims quickly, however, they do not communicate why a submitted claim is denied up front. You’ll receive a binary notice that your claim has been reviewed with a 1-5 rating scale of a random person who reviewed your claim, but no explanation of review or whether it was paid or denied. Tell us how we did but without any information, it is a bit ludicrous to request effectiveness feedback. The whole experience thus far has felt very Lemonade-centric vs. customer-centric. Anything that doesn’t fit the check box, get ready to work hard to communicate or engage with Lemonade. Took me nine calls to Lemonade to be able to speak with an actual person.
We really appreciate the detailed and honest feedback and we hear you on every point. Quick claims are something we're proud of but clear communication around denials and easy access to our team are areas we genuinely want to do better on. Nine calls to reach someone is not okay and we take that seriously. Would have given zero stars. A waste of our money. They would not pay us back after our cat got sick, because they determined it was related to a previous sickness, 6 months before we started his coverage. Thought they would at least cover his medication or diagnostic tests or even the office visit. Nothing!!!
We completely understand how frustrating and disappointing this must feel, especially when your cat is sick and you're counting on your coverage. Pre-existing condition exclusions are standard practice across the pet insurance industry and we understand that doesn't make it any easier. We hope your cat is feeling better and we're always here if you have any questions.

Updated on 06/08/2026: UPDATE: I wrote a terrible review of my experience with Lemonade pet insurance to which they responded below. Lemonade did absolutely nothing besides send an automated response to my appeal, despite responding on two platforms. Again, please do not use Lemonade for pet coverage. They are fraudulent.
Original Review: I purchased pet insurance through Lemonade believing it would help in the exact kind of medically serious situation responsible pet owners fear most. My cat’s littermate suddenly died from cardiomyopathy — a hereditary heart disease in cats that is notoriously asymptomatic until sudden decline or death. After this happened, my vet strongly recommended cardiac diagnostics for my surviving cat due to the known hereditary risk.
Lemonade denied the claim, calling the testing “elective” and “preventative” because my cat herself had not yet shown symptoms. The problem with that logic is that feline cardiomyopathy often does not show symptoms until it is too late. That is precisely why veterinarians recommend diagnostic screening in immediate family members after a sudden cardiac death.
What made the experience even more frustrating was repeatedly speaking with representatives who supposedly have veterinary backgrounds, yet every conversation ultimately circled back to the same vague policy language being recited back to me without meaningfully engaging with the actual medical reality of hereditary cardiomyopathy or the specifics of my claim.
Lemonade’s own policy explicitly defines hereditary conditions as genetically transmitted illnesses and defines treatment as including diagnostics performed in connection with a condition. Despite this, multiple support interactions felt more focused on repeating generalized exclusions than evaluating the actual circumstances involved.
Pet insurance should not only work when a condition becomes catastrophic. Responsible owners who follow veterinary guidance to investigate a potentially fatal hereditary disease should not be penalized because they acted before their pet collapsed. Very disappointed with how this was handled, especially after the sudden death of my other cat.
We're truly sorry for your loss and we completely understand how important Binx's health and care is to you during such a difficult time. We want to make sure this gets the careful and thoughtful attention it deserves. We have responded to your latest email and our team is ready to continue working through this with you there.

This has been so difficult to get my claim approved. They’ve been asking the same question over and over again. “Can you please provide me with the medical records” My veterinarian has cc every email that was sent over and they still can’t figure out that these documents have been sent over. My previous or reoccurring issues that have happened with my dog so there’s no reason why I shouldn’t have received a refund already. Lizzie a manager that is taking care of my case supposedly will not return my phone calls and the emails that they sent out you cannot respond to. I’ve asked for supervisor several times no one calls back. No one does their job properly. I am so angry and frustrated. Please do not use this company. Please cancel ASAP and go with healthy paws.

WARNING TO PET OWNERS: Think carefully before choosing Lemonade Pet Insurance. I insured my senior cat in early 2026. Within weeks of the policy taking effect, my cat became seriously ill — not eating, losing weight. I sought care at my regular vet and then a specialist for an ultrasound and full evaluation. Total bills exceeded $2,500. Lemonade denied every single claim. Here is what happened:
Denial #2: When I proved the pancreas was normal, they shifted to pre-existing IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease). The specialist’s own written letter states my cat has NO definitive diagnosis of IBD. No biopsy was ever done. No endoscopy was ever done.
Denial #3: They then claimed “chronic enteropathy” — a third different reason across three separate denial letters.
Lemonade’s own appeal letter admitted “there was no formal diagnosis at the time” — yet they continued to deny every claim. Prior vet visits involved medication trials to see what helped a sick senior cat. That is standard veterinary practice. It is NOT a confirmed diagnosis. Lemonade treated unconfirmed differentials as established facts to justify denial. I filed a complaint with my state insurance department. Lemonade stood by their denial.
I paid my premiums in good faith. I followed every appeal step. Lemonade paid nothing — not one dollar — while changing their denial reason three times. If you are considering Lemonade Pet Insurance, know this: any past vet visit, any medication trial, any symptom mentioned in your pet’s records can and will be used to deny your claim — even without a confirmed diagnosis. #LemonadeInsurance #PetInsurance #InsuranceDenial #PetHealth #ConsumerWarning

I purchased their insurance February 3, 2026 for a kitten that I had gotten three weeks prior. On January 26, 2026, I took my kitten to the vet because I suspected he had an upper respiratory infection that required antibiotics. At a follow up appointment a week later, his symptoms had not completely cleared up and my vet added another antibiotic to the mix. At that time, she mentioned that nasal polyps are a POSSIBILITY in cats but she DID NOT diagnose the presence of any nasal polyps.
On April 1st, I took my kitten to the emergency vet because he suddenly had thick nasal discharge and was breathing heavily. The next day they went in with a scope into his nasal passages and discovered a mass and were able to successfully remove about a third of it due to his small size and not having equipment small enough to accommodate him.
I submitted my claim to Lemonade on April 8, 2026. After nearly three weeks of waiting for an update on my claim, I contacted them. They responded within a few hours and told me the claim was denied because he had been seen for a diagnosed upper respiratory infection in January and therefore the care he received in April was considered pre-existing since he had the same symptoms two months later that turned out to be a mass at the base of his sinuses that was interfering with his airway. I'm totally dis-satisfied with my entire experience with them. Because he had a URI before he was ever covered, which isn't uncommon in kittens, they totally screwed me over. I cancelled his policy now that I know how they twist the pre-existing conditions terms.
We're really glad your kitten made it through such a scary experience, and we're sorry this has been so frustrating on top of everything else. A claim decision like this one deserves a careful and honest review, and we'd genuinely like the chance to take another look at everything even though you've cancelled. It appears that Lemonade insurance is a scam. Was reading a bunch of reviews and forums and it looks like people have the same issue we have had. They just deny claims and never pay. I've put through multiple claims all of which have been denied. The most recent was a CCL tear which the reason we got insurance was to cover big issues if they happen. This was a big issue and all they say is it was a pre-existing condition so it's denied. Apparently there is a weird by-law that nobody would ever figure out that would allow them to deny it. I saw some other comments where people had the same issue of them just saying it's pre-existing condition so they can just deny the claim.
I would not recommend using Lemonade for pet insurance (or any other insurance they offer) because it's definitely a scam. I've already convinced a bunch of friends and their friends to switch away, company is not worth it. We now will have to file with insurance commissioner to get some sort of retribution for everything that was paid. What's the point of paying Lemonade insurance money if all they do is deny claims. Seems odd and there's a word for that which starts with an S and ends with cam. If you are thinking of using them watch out and go somewhere else.

It was a simple claim, no questions of past history etc. Basically implying were not going to approve, This was a $241 which I knew would apply to my deductible, I am very unhappy with the delay, asking for more docs I already submitted, Even left a voicemail in their app explaing why the vist they suggested I do when filing the claim. 5 days ago, I have no time to mess with all this. They were looking for any way not to approved, I cancelled claim, cancelled BOTH my policies with them, I will find a better pet ins, Policy.

I was very unhappy with my experience with Lemonade pet insurance. I purchased it for my new puppy and the first time I attempted to use it for an illness where my dog threw twice one night and I took him into the vet the next morning, Lemonade denied my claim stating it was, "a pre-existing condition" simply because he had had worms when he was a newborn, (as many puppies do), which had been treated and cleared at the time. He had no worms (verified) when he came to me and when he vomited. The vet tested him and he was clear for worms, none. In the end it was undetermined as to why he vomited but possibly due to new heartworm medication on an empty stomach. It took Lemonade about a month to decide that they would not pay because it was "a pre-existing condition" which it clearly was not. I switched to Spot Pet Insurance who my daughter has had great experiences with.
We're genuinely sorry to read about your experience, especially as a new puppy parent. Lemonade pet insurance is extremely expensive when you consider you are dealing with an AI agent 90% of the time. My dog was recently diagnosed with Cushings disease after several years of testing for Cushings disease and having normal test results however Lemonade is still considering the Cushings a “pre-existing condition” in spite of him having years worth of blood tests showing normal results while covered by their policy. Their reasoning? His ALP liver levels have been rising over the last 5-6 years (which happens often in older dogs with no disease or illness, according to my vet). So in reality, they’ve denied my dogs new illness because they’ve decided he must have had it before (in spite of several tests proving otherwise during his coverage period). Do yourself a favor and get a pet insurance company that actually pays humans to review claims and doesn’t just run things through AI.

Lemonade finds any reason NOT to cover a claim. My dog had ACL surgery on her right leg in August, we then got pet insurance because we didn't want anything like that to happen again. In March she tore her left ACL so now they won't cover it because they consider it a pre existing illness, lol. That's like telling me because you have something wrong with your right arm then your left arm is going to go out too. 🤣🤣 What a SCAM!! DO not get pet insurance from them, save your money.
Most pet insurers treat cruciate/ACL conditions as bilateral, meaning an injury to one knee can make the other knee considered related and therefore pre‑existing for coverage purposes, even if it happens later.
If you email help@lemonade.com with your claim number, we can review the decision with you and confirm whether any waiting periods, medical records, or policy terms might change the outcome.
