Buyer beware. I bought a Reliance product and what a joke. Don’t work and operate as promised. Warranty is a joke and once you buy one they don’t offer refunds so you are stuck with this horrible product. Brian could care less about customer satisfaction. Hope they enjoy this review for not doing the right thing... Don’t buy from Lowe's or Meek's.

We have used this company for years having to replace water heaters every 5-6 years because of our hard water. This time they did not honor their warranty and we are finished with them. We can't be sure if it really is our hard water or their product. Regardless, when they state a warranty and then don't honor it, forget them! Don't buy from this company unless you want a headache!!!

I purchased Reliance's 40 gallon water heater and after installation and powering up after the tank had filled, there is NO heat. This water heater was dead right out of the box and I had to drive 30 miles to buy this thing from an Ace Hardware store which was in another city. If Reliance does Not correct this problem immediately, my complaint here is only the first step of the actions I intend to take as I will not replace this heater out of my own pocket.
One thing that I feel needs to be relayed to Reliance in the event they attempt to challenge my knowledge about hooking the electrical power up to this heater is that I have studied Electronics/Electricity and have a family member who possesses a Master's degree in Electricity and who has also tutored me in areas where I was in doubt and I have had my work inspected by a county inspector which passed my work without question. I can offer this individual's information, also, if necessary. Therefore, I have a witness to my capabilities in home electrical circuitry. Regardless whether this information is useful makes no difference to me but I am saying that I have a complete understanding and the capability to install such a simple element such as a water heater, that requires electricity.

I contacted Reliance and advised our water heater (640DORS) was not working and that it was still under warranty. I spoke with several people at the company, and told each person, how we had replaced both elements, along with both thermostats. They asked if we had an Ohms meter and was advised we didn't. They then told us we would need one to troubleshoot the water heater, so we purchased one. We called the company back and after them walking us through the Ohms meter testing, they then told us we would have to have a plumber call them back in order to honor the warranty, which we can't afford. I advised them I am in the process of looking into the Magnuson-Moss warranty act, because a company shouldn't require a consumer to hire someone to tell them what is wrong with their product.

I installed a new water tank with Reliance. I never had a problem before but ever since the new tank came in we started experiencing rumbling noises. They came out numerous occasions and can't find any problems. They wanted me to stay by the tank and record the noise, as if I had time on my hands and don't have anything to do because I don't know when it'll happen. So basically the last time the tech came was rude and said next time they come we will get charged after making money from me.

I purchased a model 6-40 EORT 100 on 3/3/2017. Every time I turn on hot water it spews gases, sometime, viscous gases... I called Reliance, talked to an agent, she told me I could change the rod for $40.00 plus freight. And would not guarantee that it would take care of my problem. I rejected her recommendation. I still have the problem, would not purchase another Reliance product.

My current Reliance water heater is less than 50 days old and is very efficient at heating the water I use and maintaining it. I'm very pleased as is my family with its performance thus far. I selected it from several available and it met what I was seeking. As I have owned this brand in the past I knew it would meet my expectations. Reliance water heaters perform well over long periods of time. They are quality built and easy to adjust settings. They are also good for the pocket making them a great value. They came in quick order. The installers were very courteous and were very careful to remove the old one with the new without disturbing the area or making a mess throughout the process. It was not a lengthy time so my day was not overly disturbed. They arrived at the time that was scheduled which I appreciated.

The water heater is right about okay. But we have lime in our water from being south of the Potomac. So we have to change out our water heaters more than people from other states do. Even though we have the lime issue, this water heater (cross your fingers, knock on wood) has held up quite well. However, I wish it came with a filter to stop the lime from getting in the water heater to begin with. Then we wouldn't have to change them out so much.

Heater failed, spewed water all over the wall and had to replace it. Company would not honor warranty, had to buy a now one, from a different company. The one that failed was from Reliance. Have a new tankless and love it. Do not have to remember to turn it off when we go on vacation. Never run out of hot water. Small and takes up very little room in the garage. But cannot keep the temp regulated as well as I would like in a shower, gets hotter, and I have to readjust. Got the same brand that we put in the rental the second time as a water heater breaks. Handy man that I use for my rentals put it in, he had no trouble. The new one seems to be fine and tenants like it, too.

I purchased a Reliance 30 gallon water heater Model Number 630LORT 301 and have had nothing but problems with this appliance. I have purchased many appliances through the years having lived in CA, AZ, OR and ID and have never registered a complaint. Any issue I have ever had was at least addressed and although not always working out as I had desired at least feel that I was treated as person and treated with respect. Reliance looks to say no and make any communication difficult as soon as you contact them with a issue. The water heater has never heated above the "vacation setting" and turns off as soon as you increase the heat to "low".
When contacted the first thing out of their customer service mouth is wrong installation. What? I had Suburban Propane install and Ed Staub Propane Service recheck the installation. They both verify that it is in the proper room with proper ventilation and plumbing. Reliance will ask for pictures and more pictures and tell you that they will return a call once the photos are received. They DO NOT return calls and when you call them once again and again just repeat wrong installation.
This is the worst company with the poorest customer service department that I have ever had the displeasure to deal with. I would suggest that you avoid this manufacturer and product. Choose another propane water heater from an ethical company. Oh how I wish that I could turn back time concerning this purchase. Read all the other complaints and choose wisely! PS - another brand's propane water heater was in this exact location for 30 years and never had a problem, just wore out.

I have never met more friendly representatives who enjoyed their jobs. They answer all questions we have and they have proven to be very knowledgeable. I enjoyed the small talk, as did my husband. Installation was fast. My family had no issues and the installers were friendly and they were very personable. The service was superb. The price of the water heater could be lower though - I don't like the rising prices. Having a water heater should not be a luxury. However, I would not switch brands solely based on the price of the water heater. It's been a great experience.

The Reliance water heater worked swimmingly and it's surprisingly durable. Haven't need much need of repair over time. When something did go wrong, the easiest thing to do was to shut it off and restart it again with a, simple flip of a switch. The installation process wasn't an issue. It was such a dangerous process, a professional was hired who, in his credit, did a fine job with a pleasant attitude. It can never be understated how splendid it truly is to have warm water in those cold nights when all one could ask for is a decent shower. All in all, a top notch experience.

It really does help a lot and it's something everyone would love to have in their house. I do recommend this a lot but not use if all the brands work as good as mine. I like the size of the water heater. It seems to fill up pretty quick and it seems to be pretty quiet as well. I also like the instructions located on the water heater unit itself. It's very understandable for average people like me. The installation went easy. It was done by a professional in the family. However, I have had to work on it or make adjustments on many occasions. Had to turn the temperature up on the unit just to make sure I had a full hot shower. I have also had to replace the pipe and fittings already. I feel that my heater might be faulty. My hot water doesn't seem to last like it's supposed to and very frequently I end up with half a hot shower. This is my biggest dislike. And, my dealings with customer service have been choppy at best. It takes awhile to get a hold of customer service and they don't really act like they know what they are doing.

I purchased a Reliance heater in August of 2017. Within a couple of weeks, it started humming and moaning when the burners turned on. After contacting the warranty dept they said they were aware of this issue with other heaters out there. They sent a part out and said I could change it myself. It required removing the burners and gas supply line. I refused so I would not void warranty. They sent a plumber. He changed it. Problem was not fixed. Two weeks later and countless phone calls, another part arrives. So does their plumber and guess what? Problem still exists. Two days off work so far.
They asked for pictures. I sent them and they say the 90 degree elbow for the exhaust is not right. I changed it, still have a problem. As of today June 7 2017, I was told that the venting on the roof would have to be changed. It was not right for this heater. It may or may not resolve the problem. Removing part of your roof is no joke or is it cheap. What we have here is a lemon, a substandard unit and they are running down every option to avoid changing it or they are using my unit as a test to fix all the other ones with the same problem. I have had it with Reliance and their runaround and do nothing but blame everything else for their inferior product. DO NOT BUY RELIANCE AT ANY COST. I will buy a new heater, anything but theirs and throw this one away.

Wish I would have read all these reviews BEFORE purchasing a Reliance water heater. Anything but reliable. DON'T BY A RELIANCE WATER HEATER unless you wish to have the warranty department completely care less about your experience. I did unfortunately buy one from Freidman's in Petaluma and had a nightmare time getting it to stay lit. When it first went out and refused to stay lit after the initial install I called the warranty dept as instructed on the heater. They determined it was deemed the dreadful "improper install" and a word they stuck by and used like 20 times to the end and thus refused to honor the defective lemon.
When I called to inform them it would not stay lit, they said it needed to be direct vented. Fine. So with that handy info, I then hired another contractor for more money to direct vent it. Again, after all that work that was done to direct vent it, the gosh darn water heater STILL would not stay lit. Unfortunately for me, it would not stay lit while I had new guests in the flat and it was a wedding party of all guests. The bride and groom. No hot water. So in an emergency situation, I called back the contractor to take another look and he concluded it was simply defective because all the water heater was doing was going out repeatedly time and time and time again. Nothing we did would keep it lit. It just would not stay lit.
So in order to immediately appease my guests and provide them with accommodations which they expected which included of all things hot water, the contractor immediately removed the RELIANCE water heater and replaced it with a Whirlpool Heater which I also had to buy. I'm now in this $2500.00 for two water heaters, installation, removal and re-installation. From the moment the new Whirlpool heater was installed we have not had a single problem at all whatsoever. Wow. Just WOW. So, now that the new water heater is working I went back to Freidman's in Petaluma and asked not only for my money back but for reimbursement for the extra costs to reinstall another heater. Well good on Freidman's Petaluma for reimbursing me the cost of the heater but they refused to reimburse me for the extra costs to reinstall the other heater. Totally unacceptable.
So I called back the Reliance warranty department in Kentucky or wherever, told them my bleeding cash story and all the lady could say was, "Well it was an improper install from the get go". Yet she failed to acknowledge that her exact department on my initial call instructed me to verbatim, "Just direct vent it and it should work" which is EXACTLY what I did and it still did not work. So they used the lingo of "improper install" to get out of covering a defective heater. Total BS. They said because it was improperly installed originally that it's not covered for reimbursement even though the improper install was corrected. Not once did she say, "Wow I'm sorry for all the hassle you experienced". Nothing of the sort. Instead just completely matter of fact. So much for compassion.
So poor Friedman's Petaluma has to eat the cost of repaying me back out of their pocket for the water heater but can't repay me for extra charges for extra re-installation (This is usually what the warranty dept does) which was the right thing to do since the heater was clearly defective. Proof being that when the new WHIRLPOOL heater was installed it worked just fine. Instead, the all knowing warranty department refused to issue a return authorization number. What a joke. The warranty department could not have come to my dire need and rescue when I needed it most while my bride and groom needed to shower with 4 other guests. Life happens and the warranty department said I should have called them when this happened. No. That was not an option in the heat of the moment. I just needed to fix it and that I did.
Then I called them after the fact with the story and details thinking they would be reasonable and understanding. So not at all. I won't even give them a single star rating. We need negative stars here. I'm thoroughly appalled at how a corporation like theirs can just turn their head and not care nor dive deeper to see if indeed the heater they sold Friedman's and in turn they sold me was in fact defective. All it would take is a look see. They refuse. This all took place over three months and for three months I was battling with why it would not stay lit.
Off note: When I initially purchased the heater from Friedman's it had a dent on the top of the heater by the flue area and there was this stuff all sticking all over the top of it. Like some foam insulation stuff. Yellow thick gunk sprayed close to the flue vent opening, center of the heater on top. I think deep down it was defective perhaps from it being dropped before I got my hands on it. I just don't know. But what I do know is that the warranty department seemed to care less about how this entire ordeal has impacted me both financially and stressfully.
$2500 later to install 2 water heaters to make it right seems completely ridiculous. The right thing to have done was to reimburse me for the extra charges to replace the UnRELIANCE defective water heater. They refused to even look at it at this point. It's sitting at Freidman's and the warranty department has outright refused to do anything else at this point. So much for warranty's and for customer service. DON'T BUY A RELIANCE WATER HEATER. GO FOR WHIRLPOOL. SO Frustrated.

Reliance Water Heater Model 501 (50 gallon tank) - I came on here because I wanted to tell people about a product that I have been happy with for a long time. Then I saw all the negative reviews written by people unhappy with their water heater purchases and the lack of customer service they encountered from the manufacturers. I know that things can go wrong with products, and companies should respond better than so many do to consumer complaints. And consumers share their experiences on review sites such as this when they are unhappy because they feel so helpless when they feel that companies have treated them badly. So I thought I would share my experience with my Reliance model 501 hot water heater.
It was put in 18 years ago and I have never had a problem with it in all these years. I've never done anything to maintain it either (drain some water out annually to remove sediment that might have settled on the bottom). I didn't know I was supposed to. Except for the occasional pilot light relight, I've NEVER had a problem with this old workhorse of a water heater--until this week. The pilot light went out again, but this time, I couldn't get it re-lit. So I researched what the problem might be on the Internet and read that it was most likely the thermocouple. It looked easy to do myself, so I bought a thermocouple at Home Depot and replaced the one on my water heater.
Once again, my Reliance 501 water heater is doing what it has been doing for 18 years - heating up water and doing it reliably! When you call a plumber out to replace your water heater, you are usually only offered what they stock as a replacement, but if you get a choice, I would recommend using Reliance. I have been extremely happy with mine Reliance water heater!

I purchase a Reliance 606 natural gas water heater in august 2012 from Ace Hardware. I am a retired appliance tech so installing the water heater was no problem. The water heater work great until March 2016. I came home from work and found out that the water heater was spraying water. My wife and daughter was home so they turned off the water to stop the leak.
In the meantime during that short time of spraying hot water it flood part of my bathroom, bedroom and hallway. When I inspected the water heater the pilot was still lit and bottom of the tank was dry. The plumbing was also dry where the water supply feeds and leave the water heater. I found the leak after turning off the gas and started draining the water heater. When I disconnected the water supply so air will push the water out, the drain faucet water started spraying warm water out the pipe that the gas valve is mounted on. This pipe is welded to the tank. The bottom of the tank was not leaking.
When I contacted Reliance because the tank has a 6-yr warranty the first thing they told me is the water heater is not registered. I did register the water heater 4 yrs ago. Anyway I fill out their form and they was only concerned about the installation of the water heater. Their main concern is with the gas valve which is working fine. The room has plenty of fresh air and is vent go from the water heater straight up and thru the roof to the outside. I already removed the water heater and installed a different brand water heater. It is installed and working fine. I did this because the tank is leaking water and proof of the leak source will show by just adding water to the water heater using a garden hose. That is a safe test to prove a defective tank.
Reliance wanted me to reinstall this unsafe water heater. The water heater cannot be fully installed because the tank does not hold water. The tank has to be full of water before the pilot can be lit. I ask them if they was going to pay for the water damage to my home if that is done. They declined to comment. I can understand their request if I had a gas valve problem. The water heater tank should hold water installed or just adding water from the top where the water supply connects. They will not do nothing unless it is reinstalled and a city inspector check the install. That shows this company is looking for a mistake and blame the water leak on it. Also, before I had any problems, my gas line was replaced by the gas co who checked the line and lit the water heater. If I had a mistake the gas company would not have lit the water heater so I can use it. Hopefully everybody will stop buying Reliance water heaters.

I have a problem with our government allowing such companies operate when they are in fact scam people, lie, mislead, make false promises and thus far, they have demonstrated absolutely no accountability on their part. Since September 20th, water has been dripping from the boiler and no one has come to address it and they expect me to climb through a hatch, change towels and containers every few hours? They promised after the service call next morning first thing a call to set up repair call, it is now 24+ HOURS and nothing has been done.
I have called them 6 or so times and no one seems to be able to get a hold of a supervisor! How could they serve 1,2 million customers and yet no one can get a hold of them? I recently read legal action against them due to negligence on their part and it appears that, I am only left with that option as I have wet ceilings, floors, carpets, baseboards, door frames, damaged furniture and I am lost for words that they have not addressed these matters.
How can they call themselves 24 hrs, 7 days a week and yet when I called both times to report water dripping, they stated that they are booking for next day. Do they know what an emergency means? Do they know that they have a legal obligation to provide timely service? Do they know that they have a legal obligation as their rental units are causing damage? I'd appreciate people who have had similar issues... I would NOT recommend RELIANCE to anyone... HONESTLY they have been absolutely horrible on every level. They subcontract and there is no accountability and there is no respect for other people's home or property.

I got Grover's to take one of them back and replace it with a new one at the end of the six weeks after buying them new. It is less than two years since I bought them and neither of the tanks will light. Had the gas company out to try and light them, no luck. Called reliance on their 800 number only to find out their warranty is a farce. They refuse to stand behind them. I paid close to $1,000. for the both of them. A total loss of money and a lot of time trying to light these things. In my opinion Grover's should take them out of their stores and not sell them to people. My experience with Reliance was totally bad. I advise people to not buy anything made by Reliance unless you don't mind getting ripped off.

Now I'm told that the only way I can ever get out of their contract is if the water heater breaks down beyond repair... I called the city and they basically told me there is nothing I can do, it is what it is. I was under the impression they were on a month to month rental basis. Our lawyers paperwork only mentions the water tank was a rental that's the only thing I have ever seen in paperwork about hot water tank.
I called Reliance and they had told me that by paying the first months bill and that I had agreed to continue the previous owners contract. If I wanted to buy it out I would have to pay 1300 dollars. I told them I had never seen a contract and I never signed anything stating that this is it was a five-year continuing contract. They told me they would send me a copy of the contract and now two weeks later I have received nothing. I called Reliance again today and the guy told me that I should have refused to pay my first bill because that would have given me grounds to fight. I told him it wasn't fair that I was entered into illegally binding contract not knowing what I was entering into. I feel I was taken advantage of. I want out of this contract and I am willing to pay a penalty but $1300 is out of the question.

She wants to send me some information regarding the RESET button. I say "there's no mention of a reset button in the manual." "Well, we don't publicize that because we don't want a child or someone to turn it off." I say "I'm a 74 yr. old woman with dogs, just tell me where the freakin reset button is." Here is our Story: Dec 2, we woke up to a cold house, called Reliance and I had a service appointment for that day. The gentleman came in and said that he cleaned the rod and the problem was fixed. Heat was on when we went to sleep. Dec 3, woke up and the heat was not working, the house was freezing again. Heat would not turn on. Called Reliance and I had a service appointment for that day. The gentleman came and said that he had bad news and that the Secondary Heat Exchanger was Defective and that we needed a new furnace since the Carrier unit we had was over 12 years old. He went on to say that we would need a new air conditioner too because when they open up the unit it will be dirty, they will find things in there and mold, etc. Wow he must be psychic, I thought to myself.
We were in shock since the man the day before said it was fixed. Makes you wonder how you can get two different diagnosis from what are supposed to be trained Reliance personnel. Not to mention that we have two little children in the home. He then shut the furnace off and left. At 9pm a Reliance sales man came to our house to sell us a new furnace and air conditioner. Wow again, this guy didn't waste a second! For a model that was similar to the one we have in terms of size was going to cost us $9800.00 in full or $139 per month for 7 years. Needless to say we were stunned. This was all too much for us and we felt like we were being forced into everything. Since we have a family full of contractors we told the sales man that we would be getting a second opinion before we made any decisions.
I asked him to provide me with the costs and details in writing and he told us that he could not and that the notes I took down while we spoke was it. I found that very unprofessional. I asked him a series of questions since we had never been through this before. Is there interest? Who are we paying, Reliance or the new unit manufacturer, etc.? We were basically assured that there were no catches. Dec 4, we got a quote from a random heating and air conditioning company for $5000.00 to replace both units. Another asked us why would we ever replace the air conditioner during the winter and if Reliance checked to see if the Heat Exchange was under warranty. I met with the sales man and once again I asked him to visually provide me the details, even send me an e-mail so that I can read "the fine print" and he could not.
Being soo confused I asked him more questions and the end of our meeting I still was not sure which way to go and remembered to ask him, at the end of the 7 years, is the furnace/air conditioner ours? And he said No, you have to buy it out. Pardon me? I asked over and over again what else is there I should know. So when was I going to be told this, after I signed the contract? Lesson: Never make a quick, rash, abrupt, sudden decision before thinking it through. There actually are others out there that will not make you feel hopeless and that genuinely care for your family's welfare. Dec 5, he called asking what we decided. I told him we were still working on it and that honestly I was leaning towards renting at $139 per month up till I had to ask what happens at the end of the 7 years. Not sure if that is just common sense but it was not to us since this has never happened before in our over 10 years of being home owners and we are not renters.
Dec 5, one of our other heating and air conditioning contacts called us and says that the part is under warranty and he was picking it up today. Dec 2 to Dec 6, these were very hard several days for our family. Since we do not have any family close by, kids have school, work is close by, we basically had to deal with the freezing cold temperature of our home. Portable heaters repeatedly blew fuses and were basically no help. Not to mention the added stress at this time of year.Dec 6, in the late afternoon, the new part was installed for FREE and the furnace is working. We have been with Reliance for many years and for a company which we trusted to put us through this especially with two small children and during Christmas is extremely horrible, ghastly and repulsive. Needless to say, we are disappointed and hope that by sharing our story we can save others from unnecessary debt!!!!

About 4 months I needed a new hot water heater and contacted Reliance to rent one from them. They sent a local contractor to install the hot water heater. It leaked from the bottom and even though the workers who came out didn't know why it was leaking, they installed a new release valve on the top. The water was definitely not originating from there, as I had newspaper wrapped there to see if it got wet. The only place that got wet was under the tank and then it trickled along until there was a puddle running downhill on my basement floor. On the 2nd service call, they installed another water heater and took the first one away. This one leaked in the same fashion, so this too was replaced.
Now on tank number three and it is leaking even faster than the other two!!! There is no other water source or place where water could leak from, and it originates from right under the tank. The tank was installed flat onto the basement concrete floor. No water from any of the valves, pipes or anywhere else. I am at my wits end and waiting to hear back from the sub-contractors tomorrow. I have spent hours reading up all I could find on the internet to try and understand this problem and all I can come up with, is that the tanks are leaking inside - so I am starting to doubt if the tanks being installed are in fact new!
I have had a new electric water heater installed by a company renting these. Within 4 months, I am now and the 3rd new tank and they all leak from the bottom. It is a Giant brand tank. It is definitely not leaking from the top or anywhere else, this is confirmed by me and their contractors who do installation. Could it be that they are installing used tanks that just look new.

My husband purchased a Reliance 606 water heater back in 2008, and after four years the wiring in the lower thermostat started to overheat, almost started the tank on fire. Smoke was coming out of the panel. Thankfully we were home to catch it. We called Reliance and they told us that since it was still in warranty, they would replace the whole thing. We got the same exact water heater at ACE in 2012. Fast forward to today, and I'll be darn, it happened again!! After I took a shower, I went into the laundry room and smelled burning plastic. I called my husband and told him and he had me shut off the breaker. When my husband got home he looked at it and called Reliance and they said that the wiring was not done right in the breaker. My husband had an electrician come and look at the box 2 years ago and it was working properly.
My husband being a very handy and smart guy checked out the thermostat on both the top and bottom. He discovered that the top one was faulty, telling the bottom thermostat to keep heating. He was always wondering why both top and bottom elements were running at the same time. He believes that the sensor on the top was faulty. We will be notifying Reliance about this, but expect nothing to be done for it. But if you have a Reliance or know someone who does, I would be checking the thermostat with a voltage meter and if it is not running like it should, call them. I have seen other people having the same problem, and I am surprised no home was burnt down because of it. If we had not been home both times, it would have after a few hours of being too hot. They should have a recall on the thermostats at least.

We heard from the renters that evening that they had no hot water. The hardware store replaced this with an identical unit which was installed on November 9th. The tenants again had no hot water that evening. We called the Customer Service Number on Monday, 11/10 and were told we must have caused a dry burn and because it was not installed by a professional.
We sent a licensed electrician over and he reported there was too much resistance in the top heating element, (he stated the Reliance system heats the top element 20% and then switches to the bottom unit and heats it to 20% and continues this rotation - he has never seen a heating system like this) he called the Customer Service Number and basically was told the same thing .... there was a dry burn and there was no coverage for this. The hardware store replaced the upper heating element for us that evening, Monday, 11/10 and we replaced that part. There was only warm water for a short period of time before we again heard from the tenants that there was no hot water. We replaced this unit with a Richmond and have had no problems.

I just want to start by saying thanks to all the other reviewers/victims of this ill designed and produced product called Reliance 606 water heater. I truly believe if it wasn't for your pro-active measures, my fate would have been much in line with yours. We too had the regulator/thermostat fry after having the temperature exceed 180 degrees F. After reading the reviews, AFTER purchasing and having a miserable week without hot water during the coldest week on record -0's and happening on a weekend to boot, I had a very sick feeling we were going to have to buy a new water heater.
Well my wife called Monday morning and talked to a very pleasant fellow and he was very helpful and gave us some options of ordering from them or we could well call it from nearby distributors who carry these parts in stock. To no fault to Reliance, the places either did not have them in stock or would not sell to an individual without a mechanical license from the state. So my wife called back to Reliance and talked to a very nice woman whom after a little persuading waived the ground shipping charge of $10.00 and gave us a tracking number.
At this point I was still skeptical. Well a couple of days later my wife checked on the shipping status and there was no confirmation anywhere so she emailed Reliance and they were apologetic and gave her a new number and we received the new regulator today. I held off on writing this review until I got it installed and took my first shower. I'm still a little wary of the what's next due to the fact the parts are made in China and the unit itself was manufactured in Mexico.
I gave a four star rating and not a five due to the product failed in the first place only after a year and a half. The new regulator does seem different than the old one as far as temperature at the old settings. It seems to be running cooler than the old one and the light that blinks is now a bluish white instead of the red before. Thanks again to everyone who has made a review. I was told when I was in business for myself some years back, that someone is highly more likely some tenfold to tell someone else of a bad experience than a good one.

I have a Reliance 606 water heater that is about 10 years old. When it was 4 years old, it started popping loudly and as it worsened, the pilot light would go out. Ace Hardware gave me a new thermal coupler but that did not seem to help much. We do not have hard water, so I didn't think that I could have buildup. However, I drained the heater and put some diluted muriatic acid in it and let it sit for about an hour. When I drained it, it showed little residue. I rinsed it out, put it back together and still had the same problems. I called a licensed plumber and he had no suggestions except to buy a new heater.
Solution: I am not sure where I saw this on the internet but it works. The problem is not sediment nor is it a thermal couple. It has to do with restricted air flow to the burner compartment due to dust in intake in bottom and bottom perimeter vents. Hot water heaters are more high tech these days than I realized and don't work simply like they used to. Apparently, this is a safety feature that is supposed to keep flame from spreading if there was a fault. I think it is just poorly engineered. If you take the burner/thermal couple out, take an air compressor with a small piece of copper tubing on the end of a blow attachment. From the inside of the water heater burner compartment, blow out the center and bottom perimeter vent holes that allow combustion air into chamber.
When the water heater was originally installed, it came with a wrap around filter for the exterior of the water heater base to keep dust out. I did not install it so I kind of contributed to this problem. Since I originally did this 6 years ago, I have had to do it twice. After I do it, the popping stops and the pilot does not go out. It takes me about 30 minutes to do it. I would not buy another Regency but at least I can deal with the problem now. This might not fix your problem but I have seen others who have also had success with this.

After readjusting thermostat several times, we finally called their customer service department. We were told we needed to replace the thermostats. After that was done, it worked for about 4 days. Called customer service again, replaced heating elements. Worked 4-5 days, called again.
Well, test the voltage, pull this out, what do you see? Check this again, reset that, oh, you probably got a faulty thermostat, get another one. Then, they tell us that we need to hire a licensed plumber to come look at it, on our dime! My reaction, You have got to be kidding me? On the advice of the MDU guy who came to fix some gas problems before we could take out the old unit, we went to Ace Hardware to grill the sales guy on this company. Was assured they were a great company and really take care of their customers and go beyond what you'd even expect. Well, too good to be true applies here. Less than 2mo later, the pilot light has gone out and will not re-light. Husband spent an entire weekend trying to get this lump of metal to start. Calls customer service on Monday and told to call a service tech. Made that call, no return call and he tried 2 days straight. Calls Customer Service again and the nice lady had him go downstairs and they diagnosed the problem together. Gave him the authorization to order this part from Ace. Following week, we get the part. Hubby looks at the directions and knows he can't do this himself so calls and tells them “Hey, I can't do this and don't want to screw it up.” Their response is “Fine, but you will have to pay for Labor.”
Now that is clearly stated in the guarantee that they are responsible for labor on a part that failed. Back to Ace after I myself made a call to them complaining about I just want my money back after seeing the reviews on here. No such luck there but they are going to take care of us. Yet another weekend goes by with NO hot water but what we heat on the stove. Now the repair guy they have is hesitant to even do this repair because he isn't certified to do repairs on this brand so they are paying to have another company fix this machine. I only hope that the problem really was this line or who knows when we'll have hot water. Listen to that little voice and buy a different brand or at least do more than look for feedbacks on this company. Pretty sure hubby didn't see this site. As for an attorney contacting me about this, ha! Not paying a penny more than I already have on this piece of junk.

In reading these reviews appears many have had trouble with their Reliance water heaters. I installed (2) 640GORTunits at the same time in my rental home 12 years ago. One a tall and one a short. I experienced no problems during this whole time. I recently replace one - not due to failure or leak but because I suspect sentiment has caused the unit to require higher heat setting and intermittent water temperature. The unit did not leak or stop working. The short unit is still working fine. I decided to replace with the same model tall unit because of my experience.
The new Reliance 606 640GORT unit is 3" taller, but it did not affect the exhaust installation in my case because there was still an appropriate upward angle. The gas inlet was about 1" lower toward the ground than the old. The inlet and outlet were Male instead of Female connection - and they now include a plastic tapered seal/seat liner. The best news was the unit fired right up once I read the instructions. I have never personally had to order parts, so I cannot speak to any experience with Reliance Parts or Service. I'm glad to buy a US built product from my local hardware store that was only ONE dollar more than a comparable unit from one of the big chain stores. The unit looked sturdily built. I walked away from the installation with the unit running feeling good about my purchase and the Hardware store that I bought it from.

After our previous water heater caught fire and burned part of our mobile home, we were easily into a month before we got the carpentry, plumbing and cabinet ready for a water heater. With help from a hefty fellow at our local hardware store, this incredibly heavy water heater was put in place. THEN we realize that it is all electronic, and as a computer expert (who knows all too well the inherent flaws and errors in code), and sure enough: lit once, made lukewarm water, cut itself off perceiving that it was excessively hot and that's it. No further fix worked. Now to get the same hefty fellow back to get it out and I sure hope we can get a refund..DO NOT CONSIDER any appliance that depends upon electronic ignition.

Well today 2/8/2013, my water heater went out; I purchased it in 2010 with a 6-year warranty. My wife reported that it smelled like burnt plastic in the home. She called our son and he checked the water heater, and it was on fire, in the bottom part - wires were melted, the thermostat was melted, etc. Oh yeah, it’s a Reliance water heater. My wife had an appointment with her mother this morning and was planning on going to see her granddaughter after that. If she left the house, the place would have burnt down, as nobody would have been back at the house till after 3:30!
So we called the company, as it said, 6-year warranty. Well, guess what? The warranty does not include any labor costs and they required us to have a licensed plumber to work on the heater. After calling several plumbers, we found out that the labor would be between around the 400 dollars - best case scenario. Guess what the cost is for a brand new water heater? Exactly! So, I went to Lowe’s in my lunch break and bought a new water heater; no, not a Reliance this time, and I will call Legal Shield to deal with the Reliance company. So, for future references, Reliance warranty on water heaters does not cover labor! They will not replace the water heater for a new one, but stick you with some parts and a go save yourself upon our instructions. Thanks Reliance.

I've lived in my house for 20 years without a single issue with my water heater until it simply wore out. I bought Reliance model 640UBRT 200 in January of 2011. Actually, I didn't buy it - the plumber I called purchased it and I went out of my way to stress "Buy American." I paid approximately $900 for the heater and the installation. On that following Thanksgiving eve, a mere 10 months later, I discovered I had no hot water. The plumber came out, couldn't fix it and called Reliance, who said the code indicated the gas control valve was faulty. There weren't any places locally that carry it so the plumber had to order it from Reliance. For whatever reason, Reliance chose to send it ground.
I was without hot water for 3 1/2 weeks, in the dead of winter. I totally understand the people on this site and the duress they describe. Honestly, I don't recall a more horrid stretch in my life (other than deaths), than that period of being entirely without hot water. It was simply torture. If I sound like a spoiled American, I agree. Until you don't have it, you do not understand what a luxury hot water actually is. But to have paid for it and not have it, there is something seriously wrong here. When the part finally arrived, the plumber came out, installed it and graciously said I don't have to pay his $70 install fee unless Reliance reimburses me, which of course did not happen.
Fast forward to this past weekend, Saturday, August 25, 2012, a mere eight months later when once again, I no longer have hot water. My nephew followed the manual attempting to restart it. The flashing code signal indicated that, once again, it was the gas control valve. So the following Monday, I called Reliance. The first woman I spoke to became very antagonistic after finally I became insistent that there was a bigger issue that needed to be addressed. I explained my situation. This unit is barely a year old and this is the 2nd replacement for the same exact part. Obviously, the unit is faulty or something. This woman was hardly trained to work with a customer, but was very well trained in letting me know I was a mere fly speck in the universe who meant absolutely nothing in the scheme of all things Reliance and she had all the power.
I got upset, demanded to speak to a manager who could actually affect my situation. After more of her superior attitude, I was then kept on hold for over 10 minutes before supervisor Dana came on the line. Dana was at least more polite than that first witch, but unmovable. "Your warranty does not cover this, go to the unit and we'll help you troubleshoot, blah blah blah." I am not a plumber, I'm scared to death of gas and this is not something I am even remotely comfortable doing. Besides, my nephew had already done it. We already know what the problem is, but Dana insisted. I let her know of my displeasure and how simply wrong it is of them not to stand by their product and do the right thing to me, regardless of this warranty that is obviously exactly all they want it to be. All for naught, it fell on deaf ears.
They don't care, they got their profit off me and now they're done with me. So, I had a new plumber come out. He tried, he did this, that. Nothing worked. He called Reliance tech support and they told him yep, it's the gas control valve. They'll send it but said I have to call and give my credit card for next day air delivery to the tune of $30. The plumber is feeling really sorry for me. He can't believe what they're doing. I asked him, "So did the last guy just get me a crappy brand?" He said, "Well yeah, he would use (can't remember the 2 brands). Those brands are reliable." Huh. How funny is that? Reliance Water Heaters is definitely not reliable!
Anyway, the plumber said good luck in getting them to waive the $30 and he forewarned that it's going to cost me another $150 for today's visit and the installation when it does get here. Great, just great. So, I called Reliance again, asked to speak to Dana. She's not in so then I got Kathy. Kathy gave me a repeat of the storyline Dana fed me (it must be scripted for them or they get so many complaints it's become rote). I remained calmer than I had the day before. It's truly emotional and indeed brutal not to have hot water for 3 1/2 weeks and fear that happening again. I repeated my belief that they should not only replace the entire unit, but pay for the labor as well. Kathy repeatedly stated that's not what's in my warranty, look at your book, so sorry, but no.
Eventually, when I knew there was going to be nothing these people were going to do to stand behind their product, I told Kathy that "After all of this, I can't believe you're still going to make me pay the $30." Finally, a crack. Some tiny little fissure must have opened in Kathy some spark of compassion buried somewhere deep inside that had hit her, that have been frozen in glacier ice, and she finally agreed to waive the shipping fee. Though this relenting came after quite awhile, which rankles even further knowing she had the power to waive that fee all along. At any rate, I thanked her then asked, "What happens if this happens a third time?" She referred me back to the warranty, which is virtually worthless.
So in a nutshell, my heater will be fixed, but I will bear all associated costs except for the replacement part and from reading the complaints on this website, I know it is but a day, a month or 6 months from now that I'll be in the exact same position. I wholeheartedly concur that the BBB and any attorney general should get involved and make Reliance Water Heaters recall their highly faulty units and reimburse homeowners for all costs incurred. This is a travesty, this gives a bad name to every American company and that's a downright shame. I was an unwary consumer who relied on the initial plumber to get me quality. I don't know what he did or didn't know about Reliance, but the second plumber certainly did.
This was a ripoff and a huge one. We're not talking about a small amount of money here. At least not for me. I'm a single female doing my best to meet the mortgage payments and do all the right things. I get no help from any other source, I take care of myself, I work my ** off for what I have. Reliance Water Heaters is anything but an unethical company and I will continue to trumpet to the world and everyone I know not to do business with this outfit. We used to be the best and if this company is representative of American craftsmanship, then truly, we are as good as doomed.

I started having pilot light issues with it in 8/10 and they reluctantly replaced the pilot assembly on 8/18/10. I since have had to replace it yet again on my own expense on 4/11/12 - another pilot assembly and a gas control valve - because they refused to warranty it, saying it wasn't bad, I just need to take it out and clean it. On 8/05/12, I started having the same problem again. Before I even called, I took the assembly out and cleaned it, to no avail. When I called, they instructed me that I had to call a plumber to come look at it at my own expense even though we already know from the previous times what is wrong. I called a few plumbers in Lincoln and they were not Reliance warranty people.
I called Reliance and had some guy look it up. He told me closest is in Bloomington, Illinois, which is about 40 miles away. He advised me that I could use any plumber of my choice to diagnose the problem. I could call to tell them what was wrong, they would give me an RA number to take to Ace and get parts. So I did all that and the plumber said it was the gas control valve which was out again. I called them today, 8/07/12, and told them what it was. The poor customer service rep gave me the runaround by saying that they only had a record of my call to them in 8/10 where they warranted the first pilot assembly. No record of my calls on 4/12, nor the calls about their rep telling me I could use a plumber here in Lincoln and that I could call with diagnosis. Because of that, they told me that the plumber has to call them directly.
They are also calling now for an additional test called OEM pressure reading. I have called 2 places here in town and they both say it will be at least $100 to have them come and run the test again at my own expense. By that time, between all I have already put in it and the expense of that test, it will be close to original price or more. They won't pay for anything at all. I am single with 3 kids at home - one under 4 years old, and I don't have all this money. I told them I would file a complaint. If you go to this page ** under Reliance Water Heater, you will find at least 73 complaints against the Reliance 606 Water Heater - same model, same complaints. I've had nothing but troubles with my Reliance 606 hot water heater from day one. Within the first two weeks, the pilot wouldn't stay lit. I ordered a pilot assembly from Reliance company. Well, they gave me the runaround saying my warranty expired which was ** because I just bought it. So I argued for like a few days and after talking to them for two days off and on, they finally sent me the part. After I installed it (I worked with my dad's heating and cooling company since I was a kid and went to school for HVAC), I got to looking at the bad part.
Lo and behold, the little diode below the thermocouple and pilot, one of the terminals going into the diode that makes the connection to the thermocoupler and pilot, was broken and not making the connection, resulting to the pilot not staying lit. So yeah, it wasn't a bad thermocoupler or pilot. It was the diode that was bad. But on this model, you have to order the whole freaking assembly. So anyways, after I figured that out as no one else could figure out what was wrong. I had like three HVAC dudes out to look at it and they even replaced just the thermocoupler and it was still broken and not staying lit, until I figured it out, so they were stumped.
So if anyone has replaced their thermocoupler and your pilot still isn't staying lit, look for that diode. So after fixing it, then about 10 months later, the damn pilot kept blowing itself out after it heats up the hot water. So now, I've been on the phone arguing with them again because them saying once again my warranty isn't valid, so they won't send me the part I need. So I have to light this damn thing every time I want hot water. Never again will I buy from this company again! And from what I've been reading, it shows me that this company knows about these two problems everyone has been having but they won't recall that hot water heater and replace our **.
I can't believe that we are getting shammed like this and no one is defending us and shutting this company down. But I hope I helped some of you out with this post. Fix for your pilot light not staying lit after you replaced the thermocoupler and it won't stay lit, try looking at that diode. It's tan in color. I hope that helped you and good luck trying to get them to send you the part you need!

When the local gas company replaced our gas meter several months ago, our Reliance 606 (650 YORT) pilot naturally went out. I relit it but several weeks later, it went out again. Then a few weeks later, it went out again. Then the intervals became shorter and shorter until it would go out after relighting and only doing a single heat cycle. Not surprisingly, I thought the gas meter replacement was somehow the cause but then I found this forum. After reading all the negative comments, I was all set to call the plumber and tell him to take the 606 out and replace it with another brand, but decided it was worth a try to clean it. I downloaded the user guide/manual from the Reliance website and followed the instructions to remove the burner unit, clean the chamber and to clean the filter ring (a grandiose name for the space under the burner chamber).
I used a small (2 gallon) shop vac with a 1/2 diameter vinyl hose stuck into the vacuum hose and sealed with duct tape (of course!) to vacuum out the filter ring. Then I used a small wire brush (slightly larger than toothbrush size, the kind you buy in a three pack at the dollar store) to scrub the central screen (a round aggregate of uniform perforations) in the floor of the burner chamber. Then I vacuumed the burner chamber and finally blew both the chamber and the filter ring out with compressed air from my Craftsman 2 gallon air compressor followed by another vacuuming. I put it all back together, relit it and it has worked normally ever since. For what it's worth, it didn't seem that dirty inside or out. But to be honest, I did most of the chamber cleaning by feel because I couldn't see into it very well. Perhaps the brushing was the critical event.
Now a few details: I couldn't find anything on the Reliance website that would help me identify our 650 YORT water heater with respect to type. I guessed all and downloaded the manual for that series. The instructions seemed accurate regarding burner removal, but stated that on re-installation, the tip at the far end of the burner unit must fit in a slot. This was incorrect for our unit. Instead, the pipe leading to the burner (i.e., the near end) fit into a notch in a vertical bracket. I actually had trouble relighting it, but discovered that I hadn't pushed the rubber cover far enough up on the igniter wire and it was shorting to the tank. It looked like the connector was completely covered, but after pushing the cover up farther, it was OK.
I probably would never have discovered this and just assumed that I had permanently damaged the pilot lighting parts if I hadn't received a mild electrical shock while I was pushing the igniter button. The bottom line is that I'm not too happy about owning a hot water heater that requires regular cleaning. It's predecessor, a Rheem unit, was 24 years old and still working normally when we replaced it with the Reliance 606. The Rheem never gave us a moment's trouble and required no maintenance.

We got a Reliance 606 hot water heater in November 2006. It worked for 2 1/2 years. On June 2009, the pilot light wouldn't stay lit. We have had the ignitor, thermocouple, gas valve, and vent all replaced. It worked for 6 months. We called the Reliance company in Ashland City, TN. The lady representing the company was rude, but finally, we got her to send us a new ignitor. They sent the part since it was still under warranty. (In 2010, it was installed by a licensed plumber. It worked for a while. Then we had to replace the thermocouple and gas valve (which Reliance wouldn't send to us, even though it was still under parts warranty). And we did everything the company told us too.
Now it's February 2012. (Unit warranty is up in June 2012.) For the last 8 months, we have had to light the hot water heater everyday up to 20 times a day to keep the pilot light lit and the water stay hot. The licensed plumber came out and checked everything out; everything is installed correctly, and there's a new vent also. But since the unit warranty is about to expire in June, Reliance company will not honor the unit warranty.
So I tell everyone that is having hot water heater problems not to purchase a Reliance, because they don't honor warranties. A homeowner should not have to light the pilot light daily or ever, if the unit was working properly. And it's tiresome and annoying to light the pilot light daily. With the price of appliances, people cannot afford to pay a plumber $75-$100 per hour or an electrician $75-$90 per hour to come and check the problems. Reliance is anything but reliant, literally. I will never buy a Reliance appliance ever again.
We should have kept the hot water heater that was in the home when we bought the house in 1990. We never had a problem with it. But in 2006, we had home renovation, so we upgraded the furnace and central air system and a Reliance hot water heater. Bad move on that part. It's nothing but a headache. I will be sure to tell people who will be in need of hot water heater in the future not to get a Reliance of any make or model. So bye, bye, Reliance. We hope you go under.

I purchased my water heater 4 months ago, and now the status light won't turn on. I called a rep at Reliance, and she said it has no warranty, and can't be fixed. I told her it was leaking, and she said I'd have to have a licensed plumber tell her that. Overall, she was extremely rude, and arguing with me! She continued to tell me that I couldn't take it anywhere to have it fixed, and that the only way it would work again, was if I had a licensed plumber come look at it. I told her that I could take it somewhere, and she was childishly going back and forth with me, telling me I couldn't! I then told her I'd report the company to the BBB, and she also told me that I couldn't! That is when I noticed I wasn't dealing with an adult, but more of an immature child!
Customers should not have to deal with people like this, when they call customer service. It is, by far, the worst experience I've had with a representative ever. Customer service should always be at its best, no matter what the company. I am very upset with Reliance, and cant believe that I seriously went back and forth with a representative, as if she was my child!

I purchased a 40 Gal. Reliance Gas Water Heater with 6 year warranty on 12/21/2011 from Grover's in Vancouver, WA. I hired a plumber on 12/23/2011 to install the product. After installation, the pilot light would not light at all. My husband called Reliance customer service and they told us we had no warranty so they would not replace it. After only 48 hours? My plumber flipped out and said that was terrible of them not to take responsibility. My husband said that he would try to take it back to the store and the customer service rep was snooty and said "If they take it back at all."
She offered to send a part that would take 4 days and would not pay for the labor. What about the labor we already owed our plumber for installing a tank that had a faulty pilot light? Thankfully the store manager at Grover's pre-authorized a return over the phone. My husband and our plumber took it back and the salesman who sold it to us refused to help us. Really? The store manager told another sales person to help with the return and we purchased a 50 Gal. Reliance floor model. It works. I just hope it will continue to work. After reading this list of complaints I wonder.

About 6 years ago, we bought a Reliance Water Heater for our mobile home, from our local dealer, Slavens Hardware. It worked for about three months and then we could not keep the pilot light lit (Model #AMSIZ21-10-1 CSA 4-1-2004). We have contacted the dealer three times and they will only refer us to Reliance. Obviously Reliance isn't very reliable. We have contacted them numerous times with no results.
We have changed parts, paid plumbers and we are still without hot water. Today I went online and tried to bring up their website and was unable to do so. I don't even know where they are located and they are no longer answering the phone. Our warranty runs out soon, so I guess our only option is to sue them and Slavens. I also purchased a Reliance (Model: 606 640YORT) water heater and I began having issues with the pilot light going out after the main burner shut off. I have replaced the thermocouple assembly and that fixed the issue for about eight months. But now, the same problem has come up again. I have cleaned the screen at the bottom of the water heater and I have made sure that there was enough air flow by placing extra vents in the wall of the utility closet. I have brushed the screen under the water heater and this did not fix the problem.
I called Reliance and the lady told me she needed the gas flow reading on the valve at the time the main burner was burning (other than a plumber who has a anemometer to check this). She told me that the gas valve was probably at fault, but could not tell me for sure until I called back with the gas flow reading. I have figured by the time I pay a plumber to come and check the gas flow ($75.00) and find out that I need a gas valve ($100.00) and I have already put a new pilot assembly on the POS ($45.00).
I would probably be money ahead by putting in another water heater making sure it is not a Reliance brand and just in case the new water heater will not have a White Rodgers gas valve to make sure I do not have this problem again. I will look for a water heater that does not have a sealed combustion chamber because I believe that this could be a part of the problem also. I will tell everyone that I know to stay away from Reliance water heater because they are nothing but trouble. I just installed a new water heater in my parents' house and it was a Richmond water heater. I will see how these heaters do.

I know I am not alone, in fact, Daniels Hardware decided months ago to stop selling Reliance products because of constant problems with these water heaters and dissatisfied customer.
I have replaced the burner assembly and clean the unit frequently, and still have the ongoing problem. Reliance customer service is horrible and offer no help form their pre-programmed reps. Enough rust chips to almost fill a 5 pound bag of sugar; therefore, knocking out any means of burner operation. I called ACE and they were very helpful and replaced the tank the next day after showing the manager its condition.
Now it is 12/2011 and I have the same problem, rust chips dropping off onto the burner. Eventually, I removed the entire 3 tube and 1 wire burner assembly (but not the thermostat) and cleaned out all of the lines. It worked for a few months, but then, problems started again this week.
I tried to redo what I did the last time but found that the main small gas line no longer had a pinhole, so I guess the hole got dangerously bigger. Fortunately, the thermostat assembly did its job and kept shutting down when the flow of gas increased. It appears that these heaters are all breaking down about every 3 or 4 years.
I've been in touch with my dealer since the original problems began and he's been great. He told me to contact him and he'll replace the heater for free during the 6 year warranty period. I just have to provide him with a copy of the receipt and the model sticker off of the water heater. I don't even have to bring in the old heater. I'll be doing that today! Looking through the view glass, we could see water dripping on the burner. We waited until the tank reached temperature. This was installed on 12-12-10. The major problem is running out of hot water. This occurred several times in the first few days, running out of hot water after taking a shower for 15 minutes. Today, 12-20-10, we decided to time our showers. The first one lasted 11 minutes. Approximately 30 minutes later, a second shower was taken, and within 15 minutes, the water ran cold. This was the pattern we were having. The temperature was set at 120 degrees. We increased the thermostat to 130, and now we have hot water coming out of the faucet that's too hot.
We are going to replace this water heater, but the question now is what brand of 40 gallon gas do we purchase. We have one bath/shower, washer, dish washer, and two people household. I have found favorable comments on Rheem, but I'm not sure.

After about 14 months, the pilot light went out, after relighting a couple of times, I looked inside as the pilot light was burning and noticed it was a yellow flame which indicates not enough fresh air. Since the water heater has a closed combustion chamber, I figured the air vent must be clogged with dust. I used a portable air tank, rigged an air hose with a two-foot piece of tubing to be able to reach far into the bottom of the tank. I blew out the dust and it started working like new again. Now about every 14 to 16 months, the pilot light goes out and when it does, I blow the dust out and it works like new again.
I see in the complaints a couple of people say they were told to clean out the air filter but no one says that they did clean out the filter. Could the main problem be that people are not cleaning the air filter like they should? Reliance cannot be responsible for the dust in everyone's home. I bought a Reliance 30 gallon LP heater for a ranch rental house, and it was a total nightmare. After installing it myself, I lit the pilot. Once the burner lit, it only burned yellow. Being aware that LP, like natural gas, should burn blue and that any LP-burning appliance is especially dangerous, I double-checked my ventilation, gas in, and fresh air intake. And after all my efforts, I called Reliance.
After being told that Reliance does not take returns, unless I have had their approved plumber in the area look at the unit, I called McCoy's where I purchased the heater. They stressed that I must deal with Reliance and that they could not take the heater back without Reliance's approval. Well, as luck would have it, I had another plumbing problem and had my plumber take a look at the heater.
He immediately determined that it was defective. The wire for the pilot striker had been routed in the path of the burner, so it quickly burned through after a few minutes of the burner being lit, causing the pilot to never light again. In addition, the unit didn't breath correctly causing the flame to dance around the bottom of the tank and eventually flame out.
We called Reliance again, and now, their staff commenced to argue with my plumber, saying that he wasn't qualified because he wasn't on their list of approved contractors. When I heard them giving him grief, I took the phone and informed them that I wasn't paying a master plumber with 14 years of experience $65 an hour to argue with some Reliance slacky with a book in front of them making $9 an hour about their out-of-the-box defective product.
What really drove me over the edge was when the Reliance employee told me "it could be fixed, and they would be willing to ship me a cleaning kit.. I lost it and not so politely informed her that the onus to repair their product was on them and not on me as the consumer. I also informed them of the fact that it could be fixed was good news for Reliance, because they could "fix" it and unload their POS on some other unsuspecting sap who was unfortunate enough to purchase a Reliance product, unsuspecting that they would be responsible for correcting Reliance's design flaws just in order to get their brand-new product to work.
After calling McCoy's and firmly reminding them about state lemon laws, McCoy's finally agreed to take the heater back after I brought my plumber along in tow to address any reluctance to do the right thing. I gave McCoy's mixed reviews, thumbs up for taking the unit back without too much resistance and thumbs down for carrying such a complaint-riddled line of products.
Reliance, on the other hand, has absolutely the worst customer service I have ever experienced, beating out my previous number one, Sprint, which I never thought could be surpassed in arrogance, uncooperativeness, and obtuseness. Berating customers who refuse to tolerate ice cold showers while awaiting "repair" kits so that they can "fix" the inherent design flaws in their out-of-the-box pieces takes the cake. Reliance: The absolute worst customer service experience ever.

There's really no damage, but we're tired of dealing with it. I don't have 5 to 6 hundred dollars laying around to replace a 3-4 year old water heater.

Our Reliance 606 gas water tank will not hold a pilot light. We even had our gas company come out and look with no cost to us. Come to find out there is a faulty switch on inside that is supposed to stay open when the pilot light is on. So we called the company to get the replacement part. That was on 6-23-2010. They would send out the part and it would be here today. Well it is 6-25-2010 and it is not here like they said it would be. So I called back and come to find out the order didn't go through. Now correct me if I am wrong, but are you not supposed to double check your orders to insure promptness? Now it is going to be 6-29-2010 before we have hot water. Even then, we are not sure if the part will arrive in time.
Even when I was looking up the company, I found numerous complaint on this hot water tank for the exact same problem. I would not recommend this tank to anyone. To beat it all, the company told me they knew the part was faulty. Reliance doesn't seem to care about their customers or care about the kind of products they sell, only about the money. Real bad if you ask me. I've sent an email to the company, this site, then I'm going to BBB to lodge a complaint as well. We have 5 kids and 2 adults in this house. Not to mention, clothes, laundry, dishes, drinking, etc. With almost 100 degree weather, it makes it rough.

I have had my Reliance 606 gas water heater for 14 months. The pilot light stopped working. I called customer service and talked to a service technician. He told me I was not getting any gas. I told him I was. It would light with a match, but it would not stay lit. When I called him back to tell him this, he was very rude and I was told they could not help me. He suggested I contact a registered plumber. I called a plumber, who quoted me an hourly rate of $70 and this would take at least 2 hrs to fix. That was not going to happen. This water heater belongs at the bottom of an outhouse with the rest of the **. I purchased this at a Hardware store in Youngwood, Pa and they were no help at all. I was told by them that they could not do anything without authorization from Reliance. This 606 gas water heater is junk. I have no hot water!

I purchased this 1 1/2 years ago and the pilot light stopped working. You can re-light it and burners will bring water up to temp. but then the pilot goes out again. Purchased from Morton lumber co. in Borger, TX. They said they'll replace it with another brand free of charge. It's good to deal with a reputable business. Of course this happened on Friday after working hours so being out of hot water for 3 days (still out of commission) is hard when you have 2 little grand kids.

We've had our Reliance 606 gas water heater for three years. It is actually the second one we've had in five years. When the first one began causing problems, we complained to the company enough that they actually replaced it with a new 606. However, this one seems to actually be worse. Once lit and the water has heated, the pilot light instantly goes out again. It's unbelievable that these things are still on the market.

Water heaters are junk. The filter system for combustible air stinks. It is almost impossible to keep the ceramic filter clean. I have to loosen the cover up, to keep the pilot on. It's not worth the money or hassle. It's nice for the plumbing companies to make money on.

The pilot light does not stay lit, when the heater is barely two years old. I never know if we are going to get hot water. We called company, did what they told us to do and we still cannot get it to stay lit. Now, I have to pay plumber to come over and check out water tank again.

My husband bought a Reliance heater that is barely 2 years old. The problem is that the pilot light is constantly going out. Lately, the pilot light goes out just about every day. This not a good situation because we have laundry, dishes, and we like to shower everyday. My next complaint will be to the BBB.

This is what I found out after going to the hardware store where the tank was purchased in 2005. I was told it would only be replaced under the 6 yr warranty if it's a "leaker", otherwise to call Reliance. You can call Reliance at 1-800-365-4054 and choose the option for technical assistance. I was lucky enough to speak with Kathy who explained there is a filter under the tank that needs to be cleaned or otherwise, the pilot goes out due to lack of fresh air. She explained how to clean the filter and told me I could see a video at hotwater101, choose "hot topics" then "gas model" then "filter cleaning". She also mailed a free fancy-dancy cleaning kit which included a long handled brush, vacuum attachment, and filter cover to go around the bottom of the tank to keep dirt out. After "standing on my head" to clean the filter which is located under the center of the tank, I re-lit the pilot. So far, a week later it's still lit. It seems like a manufacturer defect. I never had to do this on any other tank I've owned. Hopefully you will save $400 for a new tank like I have. Good Luck!

Reliance water heaters are the biggest piece of junk you can buy for a water heater. Its pilot light keeps going out, stays lit for a couple hours and goes out. Reliance pilot light might stay on and then again it might not. Stays on sometimes for weeks and then goes out again. I replaced my pilot light unit several times, still doesn’t work properly. I talked with representative from True Value Hardware where this junk was purchased and he stated there were problems with these water heaters.
He also stated that you might have to clean out around the bottom where the screen is. Take a shop vacuum and blow all the dust out from underneath and around the inside of the heater. This seems to work for a while, however, it starts doing the same thing by going out, never knowing if you’re going to have hot water or not. This is all a real joy, let me tell you. The representative at Handyman True Value said nothing more could be done about this, especially when getting a different hot water replacement. I'm tired of changing pilot light kit, I’m sick of this water heater, and I'm tired of hearing my wife **.
It is time for Reliance Water Heater Company to fess up to having a problem and have a recall on these items and pay to have new water heaters installed instead of my expense of around $500.00 dollars. Why does it always cost the consumer? I guarantee one thing, I'll never buy another Reliance Gas Water Heater and nor should anybody else

I purchased a Reliance 606 30-gallon hot water tank in 2006 with a 6-yr warranty. What junk! After only 2 years of operation, the pilot won't stay lit. The company blamed improper installation in a bathroom and will not replace parts or honor the warranty. They will not even sell me the parts. I've lit the tank so many times it is a joke. It stays lit for 2 days at a time. There are two major design flaws in the tank, poor performance and they left off the "un" in front of their company name, "Unreliance". I will replace it soon with anything but a Reliance tank. I saw the internet complaints; this is not a coincidence.

I was wondering if anyone has had a problem with Reliance 640 Electric Water Heater. In two years, I have replaced several elements and at times, it just doesn't reheat the way it should. This doesn't happen often but enough to make it noticeable; i.e. shower and 3 hours later just lukewarm water.

I just moved into an apartment with a Reliance water heater and I have had nothing but problems with the pilot light, thermocouple or stat control - who cares? It seems like all the blogs are 90% true on these Reliance water heaters going bad even within warranty. I just hope that the property manager gives me a better one. I wouldn't mind a Bradford White because I have experience with this make. It creates plenty of hot water without any pilot, temperature or delivery problems. There's a reason why contractors use this brand; no call-backs.

I bought and installed 12 of these units (model 606), and 10 of them have failed. I replaced 3 of them, and then, the place I was buying the replacements from quit selling heaters. This is a small town, so we only have two places to buy them, and both sell that brand. I would have to drive to Billings, which is 220 miles from here, to get another brand.
I called them when we first had trouble, and they spent a lot of time, telling me how it was my fault and how to vacuum the screens. So I quit talking to them. But now, the customers are threatening to take me to small claims court. So I tried to talk to them again today. The lady I spoke with tried to find why it was not their fault that if it has a 3 in flue stack, it is too small; if it has a 4 in, it is too big; and that if it ties into the flue with a T instead of a Y, then it is my fault.
Anyway, they then finally referred me to a service center in Oregon, which is 2000 miles from me. And when I called him, he just laughed and told me there was nothing he could do for me. Remember when you call them, the person you talk to has a job; and it is to find out why it is not their fault and why they don't have to warranty it. So don't tell them anything you did to try to make it work.

We have purchased two Reliance Water Heater Company's 40 gallon water heaters because the first one would not stay lit and neither will the second one. We have called and complained and have called the place we bought it from (and who installed it) and everyone just shrugs it off. We have to light it 10-20 times a day and we never have not water. Complaints don't get us anywhere. Every time I call Reliance to complain, they are hateful and rude and blame it on the installer. The place we bought it has quit carrying this brand of hot water heaters because they had to replace too many and have had nothing but trouble with them. We have had this one for one year and have done nothing but made calls to complain, with no solutions. We want to have this replaced, but no one will claim responsibility for the expense of replacing it and we WILL NOT pay one more dime. We feel the True Value in which we bought it should be responsible, as should the reliance hot water heater. We DO NOT WANT A RELIANCE appliance again.
Cold baths, not able to use our dishwasher, having to stay in hotels or at our parents' home, not able to stay at our house for Christmas b/c of no hot water. It's very frustrating, especially with an infant and during cold winter months.
