On Thanksgiving Day in 2011, the last dish to go on the table was candied yams. I took them out of a 350 degree oven with clean, dry oven mitts, took one step back from the oven and the dish fell apart in my hands. I slipped in the hot bubbling yams and fell. I received severe burns on my right hip and shattered the greater tuberosity in my right shoulder. After ten and a half months of excruciating pain and surgery, I returned to work. Over a year later, my shoulder still hurts and I still have restricted movement. That was on top of the medical bills that my insurance didn't cover and my disability payments were $2000 less a month than what I earned when working.

After this experience, I will never use Pyrex again and I warn all of my friends and family about it. I think it is very irresponsible of World Kitchens to advertise how safe it is when it obviously is not. I might add that I have cooked in Pyrex bakeware for forty years but never again as I threw out every piece that I owned. Since it has been more than a year, I probably have no recourse other than telling my story. But if it keeps this from happening to anyone else, then I think that is worth it.

About 15 minutes into baking an apple dessert, I heard an explosion and then glass falling onto the bottom of my oven. What a mess it was! I have been using Pyrex baking dishes all my life and have never had an experience like this in the past. Today, while online, I saw an article about Pyrex cookware breaking and read what other people had experienced. I will be heading home to clean out my cabinets of Pyrex baking dishes and disposing of them all in the trash. I am not willing to take a chance that someone may get hurt with my Pyrex cookware.

I baked a quiche at my Pyrex 9-inch pie plate at 350 degrees for an hour (nothing unusual). I took it out and put it on a warm (to the touch) cook top to cool. Three minutes later, it sounded like a bomb went off and shards of glass went everywhere, including into my family room 20 ft. opposite of the stove. Hot glass embedded in my carpeting which is now ruined. Glass ended up in two of the plates of food, which I was getting ready to take to the table and had to throw away instead. It took three adults and 20 minutes to clean up the glass and keep the pets and toddlers away. What a buzz kill to a special day. We are so thankful only the rug was ruined and I had minor cuts on my hands. I will never buy Pyrex again, having learned they changed their formula. I'll opt to buy the more expensive Creuset brand.

I was cooking in a Pyrex dish. As soon as I pulled the dish out of the oven, the dish exploded in my hands! It scared the crap out of me. I had to keep two kids and a dog away from the broken glass on the floor. I will never use glass to bake again. I thought it was only me, until I started to read all of these posts. Please pass this information on to others who may not know this type of glass does explode and can explode in midair as you pull it out of the oven!

I was baking a cake like I have many times before. When I removed it from the oven and set it gently on top of the stove (the burner was not on where I set it on), it exploded with a loud noise. I had glass all over my kitchen. My husband heard me scream from outside in the driveway. He came in and helped clean up the mess, while I kept the dog out of the glass as I was barefoot. Fortunately, I was not injured as I always wear oven mitts that go up to my elbows. Of course I threw out the cake, along with the cake pan pieces and won't purchase another Pyrex anything. I have several pieces yet to replace as I won't use them again for fear that they will be next on the explosion list as they are older than the cake pan that was only about a year old.

I thought I was the only person that had experienced the exploding cookware phenomenon until I read an article online. I too had experienced this. I cooked a pan of lasagna in the oven. When it was finished, I pulled it out; placed it on the stove to cool; and set for a while. I went to the living room to watch some TV and it sounded like rain was hitting the kitchen window. When I got up to see what the ruckus was, I was in awe to see the lasagna slowly oozing out of the Pyrex cooking dish. It had splintered into a thousand long, slender pieces. I was just lucky to not have had the hot dish in my hands or worse, set it on a table with hungry guests. The only loss was a healthy portion of good ingredients and about two hours of preparation and cleanup. Again, I was grateful that no one was injured.

This is nothing new for this cookware. Subject Pyrex cookware to any severe extreme temperature and it will explode. Making them explode is easy. Just start making escaloped potatoes in them. Put the water and butter in one of the saucepans on the stove top, bring to a boil then add the milk and presto! Explosion! Works every time. I've been able to replicate this 95% of the time.

Dish shattered - I was making a roast for supper. The roast had been in the oven for probably 45 minutes. I opened the oven and then got a fork to turn over the meat so it would brown on both sides. I turned away and while I had my back turned, the dish shattered. This was probably about two years ago. It scared me silly and it was in the oven. I was surprised we didn't have a huge grease fire in the stove.

I am visiting a family member and used their Pyrex dish to prepare a roast turkey roll like I've done hundreds of times in my life. As always, I baste the turkey and after it browns, place less than a cup of room temperature water in the baking dish so the drippings don't burn as it continues cooking. To my shock, the dish exploded into hundreds of pieces. Fortunately, no one got hurt, but it took over an hour to clean up. When I bake the same meal in my own home, I use Corning Ware and never had a problem. It was not until I did a net search that I learned it was a frequent problem. The product needs to be taken off the market. It's dangerous, like shrapnel!

After having had a bad experience with an exploding Pyrex dish some years ago, my husband and I were particularly careful this Thanksgiving to make sure all our dishes (from the refrigerator), were taken out and not put into the oven until they were at room temperature. Even with this precaution, about half an hour after putting them in the oven at 250 degrees, we heard a frightening crash. Much to our amazement, we found an entire lasagna-sized dish of stuffing shattered, taking with it 2 other dishes now filled with glass shards. There were significant chunks of glass on the bottom of the stove. It was not only a disappointment to have to throw out all the food, but the cleanup was distressing & possibly dangerous with our grandchildren present. Our anger and disappointment with Pyrex products has brought us to the decision of never buying another Pyrex product. Do you need to take a science class on thermal shock to use their products?!

I turned the oven off and left the dish of dressing in the oven with two other dishes when 10 minutes later, it exploded in the oven into hundreds of shards, which also fell in the other dishes. Luckily no one was injured, but we had very little to eat for our early Thanksgiving dinner since three dishes for dinner were ruined and it was a difficult mess to clean up. This is ridiculous that it exploded at a low temperature and with no temperature change to a colder counter, etc. as I heard this could happen if you sat it on a colder surface, but it was still in the oven. Pyrex should stop making these dishes and go back to the dependable formula they used to use.

Twenty minutes into the cooking time, I heard a crash and found the dish had "exploded" into multiple pieces.

After the oven cooled, I cleaned everything up and contacted customer service at Omaha Steaks to see if other consumers have had any similar problems with their baking instructions. They indicated that they had not, but the lady said it is not uncommon to hear stories of Pyrex dishes breaking. She was also kind enough to send me a replacement product, even though it did not appear to be a problem with their product - Omaha Steaks 100% guarantee is wonderful! About 20 minutes into the baking time, the glass dish shattered around the pastry, leaving the pastry largely intact but shards of glass everywhere.

The oven hasn't cooled yet, so I haven't been able to examine the oven or the elements, or remove any of the glass; a terrible end to a terrible day. That pastry takes a lot of work to put together. I made the same one using the same pan last week, and had zero problems. I'm an expert level baker. I use those pans all the time. Thankfully for her (and Pyrex or the company who makes the glass dish), she was not injured when the glass blew out of the oven towards her. The dish does not say anything about maximum temperature for this type of dishes. When I went to the store, they still do not have such a warning. I photographed the breakage in the oven and kept (for the moment) the shattered glass dish. Seems to be a problem when I look at your site and other sites involving this issue! I checked angry because this could have been a lot worse (glass in the eye, etc.). Maybe it is time to start putting warnings on all glass dishes that go into an oven (maximum temp and time they should be in?). Just a thought. Thanks.

I removed the dish from the oven and set it on a wooden trivet on top of my stove. I had just left the kitchen and heard a loud explosion and came back to the kitchen to find my dish had exploded all over the kitchen! My daughter came running in and we stood there in amazement.

That glass flew in all directions in a 10 foot area. There was no extreme temperature change that would have caused this. I have baked in this dish for years. Thank God I had left the room. All I could picture was me with hot shards of glass embedded in my body and no health insurance. I'm still finding glass pieces in my kitchen after an hour of cleaning it up. When I told a friend about it, she said she had the same thing happen to her years ago with baked beans.

Just what is it going to take for Pyrex to admit they have a dangerous problem! My daughter took a picture of the top of my stove with the glass all over with the chicken in the middle of it if I need to prove it to anybody! Now that I see numerous other incidents mentioned, I doubt it would do any good to even contact Pyrex regarding this. I certainly wouldn't want them to send me any replacement dishes; that's for sure!

One issue is when heating up soup, the bowl becomes very hot, making removal from the microwave slightly dangerous. I set the timer for 2:22 with the idea that I would check it while I was doing my other setup for my dinner. At 1:43 remaining, I heard an explosion. The Pyrex had exploded in the microwave. There were large shards as well as small slivers. I was amazed that the inside of the microwave wasn't damaged. It seems that Pyrex is in a heavy portion of denial that this incident would ever exist. I sent an email to them, and was acknowledged, but no reply, 5 days later. As she pulled it from the shelf, it literally exploded in her hands, cutting her in several places while simultaneously scratching and covering our kitchen's oak floor with hundreds of pieces of glass. She was lucky that none of it had entered her eyes as her face was directly in the force of the blast. After several hours of careful cleanup and removal of any exposed foods on the counter-tops, we are angrily searching for answers why this occurred when no hot or cold temperature swings or other unprovoked actions on her part caused this to occur.

I have 4 kids in the house - 12, 5, 3 and 1 years old - often coming in and out of the kitchen or near the kitchen. I am very upset after bringing home a newer boxed set of Pyrex dish, which I was making the best choice for me and my family by buying such a trusted brand. Last night was a horror when I went to remove my Pyrex pan from the oven. It began to explode in my hand. Glass shot back behind me at least 10ft. I thankfully have quick reflexes and put it down on the stove which was not being used where it continued to rupture. Thank God nobody was hurt. One of the pieces of glass just barely missed my 12 year old who heard the loud noise and came running to make sure I was okay.

I am very shaken up and afraid of what could happen to somebody who may not be aware of the dangers, like myself, thinking they are making the best choice for their family, only to have something awful happen that they will regret. Nobody was seriously hurt, but mentally I am a mess. How can they allow this product to continue on the market without labeling it correctly? It shouldn't take a death to make this right. If there is an act against them, please let me know. I am going to our local paper tomorrow. Somebody needs to do something. Until last night, I had no idea this was not just a one time thing but recurring and many people are being affected by it.

I then went downstairs for a couple of minutes to take care of a load of laundry, and I heard a loud popping sound. When I returned to the kitchen, I found that the pan had exploded. Luckily no one was in the kitchen when this happened, but there were glass shards everywhere in and in the food that I was preparing.

This is a serious issue with Pyrex dishes exploding, and it’s only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured or killed due to this. It’s a shame that companies put an unsafe product like this out just to put a little more money in their pockets. I don't know if I can use Pyrex products anymore as long as this is happening. This morning, March 15, 2012, I placed 3 waffles and a sausage in a baking dish in a 400-degree oven and set the timer for ten minutes. I checked the food and decided to turn on the speed bake feature of my oven for approximately 2 minutes.

After which, I removed the waffles and continued to cook the sausage for 1 minute with the speed bake turned off and the broiler on. When I removed the glass pan from the oven, I sat it on the top of the smooth-top stove; and immediately, the dish exploded and glass went everywhere! It literally blew up! Glass chunks landed as far as 5 feet away from the stove.

The hot glass surrounded me, covering the stove, counter, and floor. The way I escaped being seriously injured was my husband was still home and rescued me from the sea of glass I was standing in. After cleaning up the larger chunks, there are still small shards of glass on the floor, cabinets, and stove. I am sure as the day goes by, I will find small pieces of glass on me or in my hair.

I located the Pyrex website and called to speak with someone. The Consumer Care Center offered to replace the pan with another, after admonishing me that I did not use the pan properly. They suggested that the pan should be placed on a dry towel when removed from hot oven, not on a stove top or similar surface.

I am not a novice cook, and I have seen Pyrex break or shatter from temperature change. However, this was different. This was an explosion, a very dangerous event that was out of the ordinary!I will never use a Pyrex dish in a oven again for baking or anything else for that matter.

From that explosion, too small pieces lodged in my arm and hand. Although, I was pelted with the glass shards (luckily, I had just turned my face away from the dish), my guests and I escaped “serious” injury.

Unfortunately, that put a major damper on the gathering as we had to block off the kitchen (the main place to gather) and commence cleanup. On top of that, we had to discard much of the nearby food for fear of glass contamination. It was a recently purchased Pyrex dish. Had the dish exploded, while being removed from the oven, or shortly thereafter, while serving food from it, there could have been serious injury to a number of guests attending the party.

We are thankful that it only ruined most of the food for the party, and that no one was injured. It is a shame that American companies have become so mercenary about making obscene profits, that they jeopardize the lives and safety of the American public to accomplish this. The other Pyrex dishes purchased years ago, and used for more than 25 years were still intact, and did not explode. We have never had any problems with these dishes. I can remember when companies were created for a real purpose, to make a reasonable profit for the owners, and to supply jobs for American workers. In today's world, it appears that the primary purpose of an American company is to increase the bottom line, as much as possible, to increase the stock price of the company, in order that the owners can become obscenely wealthy.

We were so embarrassed by what had happened. I just brushed it off, until tonight, while I was watching the channel 15 news here in AZ. They were talking of the breakage of this glassware. After 3 instances over the past 3 years with our Pyrex dishes breaking/exploding, I am regretfully informing you that I am disappointed with your products, and can no longer purchase it. Two of the instances, the Pyrex dishes were in the oven with the lid on. The oven was on 300 degrees F, and there was no instance of "hot shock", or the change in extreme temperatures.

The last instance (and last chance for Pyrex) was last night. We placed boiled potatoes and corn, and placed it inside the dish to serve, when it "exploded" on the table. Again, there was no extreme temperatures, and the dish was not heated atop the stove, and was again not subjected to the extreme temperature change. This is not acceptable for baking dishes.

We were making our normal taco dip that we have made countless times in a 13x9 glass pan we received as a wedding gift in 1993. This time without warning the pan exploded into pieces scattering glass across our kitchen. My husband suffered a few minor cuts.

What concerns me is the ticking time bomb that is in homes across the US. Did we get a faulty pan? How many others are out there? What is the brand, Pyrex doing about this? It appears from the number of comments out there that this is a recurring problem. This glassware is supposed to be heat-resistant and microwave-safe.

What is Pyrex doing about this? It just goes to show cutting corners and cost ends up with people getting hurt. A pan that should stand the test of time, lasts less than a week. We are open to being contacted by an attorney. I will also be reaching out to target in reference to this matter to see if we can get another brand of pan instead of Pyrex.

I was preparing dinner, a fillet of S'wai baked in the oven. I wrapped the fillet in tin foil and set it down in a Pyrex casserole dish. I cooked it for about 22 minutes on 400 degrees. When I pulled out the dish and set it on the top of the stove, the dish exploded! Maybe exploded is a bit drastic sounding, but let's just say it blew itself apart into shards all over the kitchen; otherwise, a small explosion of the materials.

As a result, the bottom of my foot got burned and I got a couple of cuts on my legs. I wasn't wearing shoes since I was fairly certain that I wouldn't have anything to worry about cooking in my own kitchen. Why the hell hasn't someone said that there should be some kind of warning label put onto these dishes bearing the Pyrex trademark? It's utterly ridiculous that people are risking being maimed by their cookware in this day and age just because someone wants to save a few dollars on a cook pan.

Someone needs to bring a class action lawsuit against the makers of these damned things until they finally agree to put a big bright label on the cartons that reads, "The use of this product may lead to random explosions during food preparation. Thanks, have a good day."

Admittedly, I got off easy but the burn on the bottom of my foot could have been a burn on my face, a burn on any other part of my body, or a shard of 400 degree glass in my eye. Someone should sift through the thousands of anecdotal accounts on the web and bring a class action lawsuit against these people who are still producing this volatile cookware. Geez, it sounds like such a joke! But it happens. I can attest to it! I can show you the photos of the injuries if necessary!

It's like a terrorist attack from the manufacturing industry every time that someone heats something made of this stuff up in the microwave. I know that there are some differences in the materials, borosilicate glass vs. soda lime glass; well, someone needs to make sure that there are different trademarks for these products so people aren't putting their lives in their hands when they are baking lasagna!

We ran to the only open place in town, a Quik Trip, and bought hot dogs and beans. That was our Christmas dinner. After family left and I was cleaning up the mess, I then discovered that my oven no longer works. I will be discarding all of my glass bakeware this week. Okay, this is my third time trying to complete a post on here and it is getting a little aggravating. On Christmas day I was baking a highly anticipated cornbread dressing in my new Pyrex glass baking dish. The oven was set to 350 degrees and the dressing baked for about 45 minutes. My son removed the dish and placed it on a well ventilated trivet. About ten minutes later he heard a loud pop and turned around to see the pan had shattered into a thousand tiny pieces all over the kitchen. My grandchildren had left the kitchen just moments before! I have never had a pan do this before and was in total shock. There were no drastic temperature changes either. When I purchased this pan it was part of a combo pack (two oblong pans). You can be darn sure I won't be using the other one for baking. I've owned many Pyrex pans over the years and this has never happened.

I will be contacting Pyrex and hopefully they will reimburse me rather than sending me another pan, because I cannot trust their brand anymore. Judging by all the similar complaints I've read, this is a lawsuit just fixing to happen with perhaps dire consequences. I am just thankful that no one was seriously injured. My daughter cut her hand while helping to clean up, but no stitches were required. I haven't contacted Pyrex yet, but will be doing so tomorrow.

12/23/11 my wife had been making Christmas cookies about 4 days earlier with the intention of making more latter. Since she was unable to resume the baking I cleaned up the kitchen island of all the baking tools and dishes. I hand washed a large 4 cup Pyrex measuring cup in lukewarm water and set it in the strainer down in the sink upside down to dry. There was nothing piled on it, in fact only 3 other small items were in the sink. I then made a few batches of cookies from a store bought bag mix so we would have enough, not using the measuring cup. About an hour to hour and a half later the last batch was on the counter and I had my back turned working away from the sink luckily.

I heard a huge bang like pop. I thought a mason jar fell of a shelf above but it was the measuring cup. It exploded in the sink luckily sending only a small amount of pieces out of the sink. I threw out the batches of cookies that were in the open near the area and swept the floor, the handle is amazingly shattered. What a mess and disappointment. To make matters worse, on Christmas day my wife was going through the kitchen and found a small shared of glass I missed and is now in the heel of her foot. Pyrex is out of my house! I guess the strangest part of this is that there was no change in temperatures the measuring cup went through. It was just washed and sitting in the strainer untouched then Bam!

I screamed as it scared me, my son ran in to see what had happened. A guest who seen this remarked how they had never seen anything like it before.

Bottom line, these dishes are unsafe. Had this glass blew up in my face, it could have left me injured for life or possibly blind. Imagine hot glass pieces piercing into your body or eyes. It completely ruined my holiday meal for me and my guest and left me with a huge mess to clean up (inside & outside of my oven). Pyrex needs to be held accountable for there unsafe bake-ware before someone does get seriously hurt. They should also be made to reimburse people with these issues for their lost food and time . We put a lot of time into preparing our meals especially our family traditions at the holidays. From what I have read, Pyrex has been at fault for many meals being thrown away. I was cooking a pizza on a Pyrex pizza plate and heard a loud pop. The plate had exploded, filling my oven with glass shards and pizza bits. It could have been a real tragedy if the oven door had been open.

I have had a 9X13 inch pan explode when I took it out of the oven and also a measuring cup explode in the microwave. My daughter had a 9X13 inch pan explode in her kitchen and it melted her carpet and her linoleum. I wrote a blog post about this http://***.html and 50 people commented having similar experiences. How can you trust cooking in a product like this?

I bought a Pyrex name brand glass oven pan about 2 years ago. I have been using it regularly. Tonight, I was baking chicken at 350F and heard a crashing sound. The pan exploded. Now there is glass all over my oven. I'm glad I wasn't handling the thing when it exploded, I would be on the way to the hospital right now.

I hadn't realized that Pyrex quality had gone the way of Black & Decker (in other words, a manufacturer of inferior products sold at a premium), but I will definitely not be recommending this brand anymore. Shame, it had the best reputation, but today's Pyrex is definitely not the same as dear old mom had.

I have 2 Pyrex glass 2-cup measuring cups and 1 Anchor Hocking 4-cup measuring cup on the tile behind my cook top. Just now I was ladling jelly into jars (on the front right burner farthest away from the measuring cups) when one of the Pyrex 2 cup measuring cups just exploded. It was not near the burner nor near a pilot flame. Nothing fell on it. It was resting in the 4-cup AH measuring cup.

I was baking chicken breasts in a Pyrex baking pan (2qt cake-type pan). This particular piece was 8-10 years old and used on a regular basis. It was my favorite baking dish. I opened the oven to check the chicken and closed the door. When I went to check on it 15-20 minutes later, the pan was in pieces all over the oven. It initially broke into large pieces but as it cooled, it broke into smaller pieces. Luckily, no one was hurt. The oven was a mess though, with chicken juices and tiny pieces of glass all through the inside.

A 9x11 Pyrex baking dish shattered after being taken from the oven, imbedding pieces of glass into the carpet as far away as 8 feet. The slivers of glass melted into the nylon carpet, totally destroying it. Thankfully no one was injured. The damages are $1500.00. I wish reimbursement.

Pyrex jug was being used in microwave no longer than four minutes. Just as my husband took it out to place it on the bench top, it exploded. There was no sudden change in temperature. The jug is only around six months old. Luckily, my husband wasn't hurt. It could have hurt one of my grandchildren as the glass flew over the whole kitchen.

Pyrex changed hands years ago and stopped using borosillicate glass (the good stuff) in favor of soda lime glass (the cheap stuff). I would recommend finding another supplier and abandon Pyrex completely if heat/microwaves/cold is going to be involved.

I used a large Pyrex 15x10x2 pan. I baked 2 winter squash halves in 300 degree oven for 1 hour, then I poured 1/4 c warm water on squash while pan still on the oven rack. . The pan gave off 2 separate explosions, 20 sec. apart, sending sharp glass shards throughout kitchen, making a huge mess in oven and the kitchen.

I purchased a Pyrex glass dish and it shattered on my countertop with water in it. It was not hot and had been sitting in water soaking. My purchase price was $9.99. I would like to be refunded. I brag on these dishes so much, and I couldn't believe it happened.

Last night, I was baking salmon and when I opened the oven door to remove the 8x8 Pyrex baking dish, it exploded into hundreds of pieces. Thankfully, I had opened the oven door only five or six inches. The dinner was ruined, I had a mess to clean up, and the whole experience shocked me numb. I have used this dish three or four times previously with no problem - what happened this time? I'm buying a metal baking dish.

I was cooking chicken in a Pyrex pan. I opened the oven to check if it was done. When I pressed the knife against the chicken to check it, the pan exploded, sending glass 3 or 4 feet out into my kitchen and covering the inside of the oven with it. How I didn't get cut, I'm not sure, but this was a regular use of an extremely common product. I worry about this being on the market without warnings about this potential.
