• Curved stair lifts require more preparation. Peck noted that you’ll need to clear more areas as these units often include custom entry and exit points beyond the stairwell, such as landings or hallways. Besides this, installers may need a protected workspace — ideally about the size of a car — for staging and adjusting the equipment.

Installation time varies by lift type, Campbell said. Straight stair lifts are usually installed within two to five weeks since dealers often stock them. In contrast, they rarely stock curved stair lifts because manufacturers must create each rail to match a staircase’s unique dimensions and turns. This extends installation timelines to four to six weeks.

• Repairs may be costly if you end up hiring a professional after attempting to self-install.

If you're determined to DIY, stick to straight stair lifts. They're simpler since they follow a linear path without custom curves or complex programming. "Proper measurements are critical on curved stair lifts," Campbell cautioned. One wrong measurement can leave you with expensive equipment that doesn't fit.
