I have access to several mowers. I garage them. One is 30 years old and runs great. I like it but it has several foibles. If I heed all those little quirks, it is fine and still does a remarkable job. I have it checked out 1 or more each year, oil, blade, filter, etc. Briggs & Straton. Love it.

Had one with a Kohler engine. This was the worst Craftsman I ever owned. I will not buy another unless it has a B&S engine. The oil plug was seeping oil because a nut worked loose and oil leaked out on the ground on the kohler and I didn’t see it and the warranty co. Refused to replace the engine when it seized up. I never had an issue with a B&S engine

I am a senior so this is the only way to mow for me, I love my Craftsman riding mower. It cuts so well. Have owned it for 3 years. Easy maintenance, just replaced the blades and it's like new. I moved to Florida from Colorado, lived in the mountains, no lawn to mow there, but here in Palm Coast we take pride in our yards. I have bought Craftsman products all my adult life and they never let me down. I highly recommend this riding mower. A lot of people have lawn service but I do all my own lawn service so I figure I have saved a lot of money over the years by getting this rider.

Lowe's does not stand behind the products that they sell, if you don't pay for an extended warranty you're screwed. Didn't think I needed an extended warranty, after all it's a "Craftsman", Junk! You will be lucky if you don't have to pay for repairs with the warranty, Sad. I purchase a Craftsman Tiller $800 4-5-2020, used twice to till garden. Still has paint on blades if that tells you how new it is. Tried to take back to Lowes 3-29-21. The bottom seal around blades blew out, oil everywhere. Lowes put me off and did nothing. Very rude service rep and manager could care less, bet if it was his he would feel differently. You couldn't give me anything with the name Craftsman and I'll be using Home Depot from here on out. 18.5 HP, 42" Mower with Electric Start, Automatic Transmission. Model No. 917.276760. Purchased in 2006 to cut two acres, this continues to be a reliable workhorse. Replaced the mower deck a couple years ago due to it rusting since I was storing it outside, and replaced both mandrels and the drive belt. Replaced the spark plug and air filters once, and the battery twice. All other parts are original and performing well. If it ever wears out completely, I'll definitely choose another Craftsman model to replace it.

I purchased my Craftsman 42" cut riding mower in early 2000 and it has worked very well on level ground as well as steep hills. It has cut even thick grass or wet grass with very little effort. I like the safety feature on the mowing deck with the roller in front of it and the wheels on each corner of the mower deck.

I've owned 2 Craftsman riding mowers. The first one failed quickly, sold it after 3yrs broken. The second one had similar issues but was still under warranty. Carb replaced, problem came back. Motor replaced, worked better for about 5-6mos, then the plastic gas tank split. While not expensive, the repair is. I decided to fix it, 7hrs of labor, total disassemble of frame/parts. Got it running again, sold it. I'm running Cub Cadet now with zero issues.

I've had this Sears Craftsman Lawn Tractor for a few years now. Replaced the one I had for about the fifteen years prior. It's crazy fast, any faster and I would have to slow it down. Excellent gas mileage. I mow the 1.5 acres in about 60% of the time and use half the gas. It came with an updated B&S Intek Iron Core Dual Cylinder Engine. It's a bit quieter than its replacement. The mowing deck is slightly wider and much easier to remove. The driver seat has armrests. A bigger deal than I would have thought - particularly at full speed.

I bought a cheap version, used, on Facebook Marketplace. I mow 1/2 acre of crabgrass in Florida once per week, usually 40 times per year, with wet grass for about 8 months of the year. I've had this mower for four years and have done just routing maintenance and upkeep. It has not had to have any repairs. It is not a premium unit and I did not need/expect one, so the handling is adequate though hardly something to write home about. I have not tested it on any kind of incline.

I have a 19 hp single cylinder Craftsman Riding lawn mower which cost me 2800. I would not recommend because it is one of the tight turn mowers. Every time I turn it sharply it locks up and won't turn back until you really put some pull on the steering wheel. If you get on a slight hill it will start to flip over. The grass cannot be over 3 inches tall. The mower will start making a lot of noise and bog down. I even had a warranty on it and tried to call customer support and that is the biggest mess ever. I will not go there so I deal with repairs myself. Never will I buy a Craftsman Riding lawnmower again.

On 4-09-2019, I bought a Craftsman Riding Mower from Lowe's in Parkersburg, Wv. I used it that summer to mow my yard. The following summer I used it about 4 times. On June 12, 2020 I was mowing my yard when it acted like it ran out of gas and quit. Then I noticed smoke coming from under the hood. I had to run inside to get my phone so I could get a pic of the smoke. By the time I got back to the mower (Less than 1 minute) it was now on fire. I took a quick picture and put the fire out with an old towel. I had to wait until after the weekend to call craftsman because there's no help on weekends. It was still under warranty. When I called several times I went through recording after recording until a recording said they would call me back. The call never came. The Craftsman warranty is non-existing. I just purchased this model riding mower to replace an older Murray mower. The Craftsman is unstable to ride. You need to wear safety glasses because it throws small stones when you have to turn in the street, You have to wear a jacket to save your arms from the dirt and stones it throws up at you while driving it. It would be nice to sip a refreshing iced tea after the job is completed but instead you need to take a shower to get the dirt from your face and hair. I also need to use ear protection from the tiny noise the new machine produces. The ride is very shaky and uncomfortable. I have used this mower 3 times on a flat residential lawn. I do not like what I purchased and I am afraid I am stuck with my decision.

3+ years ago, I purchased a Craftsman 3100 "Anniversary model 42" rider to replace an older rider of a different manufacturer because I have always purchased Craftsman tools, I have Craftsman snow throwers and blowers and have always thought Craftsman was a reliable brand. That is no longer true. I started having trans problems this season, it will not allow to change direction, the hydro foot control jams as well as at times will not stop moving, whether forward or reverse when releasing the foot pedal. This has caused issued with near misses with trees and buildings.
Called Craftsman service, of course they have not received any other calls regarding this issue. There are recalls for these same transmissions that were installed in other MTD manufactured riders but there are no recalls for the same trans model installed in Craftsman. Service took all my info, said they would contact me after some research, that was 4 months ago. I will not buy another Sears product, the quality is just not what it used to be. I find there are a lot who have the same opinion. And their service and follow are subpar.

I bought a new Craftsman Model 917.986410 lawn tractor in July of 2016. I ran over a rock and the blade stopped. I ordered new blades and noticed the mandrel, which is start shaped, had rounded off. I attempted to order a new one and was told by Sears Parts Direct they no longer stock that part, along with several others. Further there is no replacement. So basically I have a $2,000 lawn tractor that is 3 years old and not repairable. So if you are looking to buy a lawn tractor, buy another brand.

Craftsman Lawn Tractor. Worked great for the 1st 5 months, then the major headache. Tractor started bogging down then shut off. Still under the 2 year warranty the tech came out within a week. Bad carb. Ordered new carb. July 31, waited over 100 days for new carb after Sears kept telling 5 times me, "In 2 weeks you will new carb and we will schedule tech to come out." During that 100 I had to pay a lawn service $100 a week and could not use the Tractor with the leaf pick up system I have so had to pay for leaf clean up.
By this Time (November) I put Tractor way in shed and new carb arrives. Fast forward to March, Tech comes out, installs new carb. I used Tractor to begin yard clean, 1/2 way thru same symptoms and Tractor shuts down. I reschedule tech service, was told they shipped me a faulty carb. Ordered a new carb.. Tech is scheduled to return in 2 weeks. Let’s see how long this time to receive new carb and if this 3RD Carb will fix problem.. So I’ll see how many weeks this summer I will lose the use of my Tractor. I’ve been a loyal Craftsman/Sears customer for 35 years. So sad to see what Sears become.

I purchased a new Craftsman T3000 a few months ago. My wife is short. With the seat pulled all the way up she still can't depress the auto pedal completely down. When she tries to sit on the edge of the seat to get closer to the pedal the seat comes up and the mower shuts off. When I use the mower it strains my leg to have to keep the pedal depressed the entire time. Also the battery is under the seat so it would be hard to keep the seat depressed and jump the battery if I ever needed to. The gas tank is extremely small and with our small yard we have to refill to complete a one time cut. I have purchased 5 or 6 Sears mowers over the years, but I will never purchase another one.

Will not buy another Craftsman tractor again. I bought this about 7 years ago -- nothing but issues. After the warranty ran out I had major smoke from the engine. Took it to the shop and found out head gasket, they said bad design and it should have at least one more bolt on the head to keep the gasket from blowing out. Ran for a year and then couldn't start it, thought it was battery but that didn't help. Turns out it was the cam not releasing the pressure. Now reverse isn't working correctly and they think it is the hydro-static trans. Never again will I buy a Craftsman. Decades ago they lasted forever --- what happened to them.

Bought a Craftsman riding mower about 2 years ago, to replace another Craftsman riding mower, along with a 5 year protection agreement. First one worked well, but this second one has been nothing but trouble. This second one claimed tight turning radius but based on use, I have NO IDEA to what this is referring. It also claimed to have non-slip tires but there are quite a few places on my yard that I have to have a run at to traverse without digging up dirt (never had this trouble with the first mower).
The biggest trouble I think is that the center of gravity is probably a foot higher on this tractor than my first; this also keeps me from mowing across angled terrain (I know they recommend not mowing at greater than a 15 degree angle but I've never tried to measure it - I was able to mow it with the first mower, as long as I leaned). I have a bagger attachment that stripped out mounting points for the attachment base. First they refused to do anything about it under the protection agreement but after I complained, they sent someone out to mount the attachment base directly to the mower - not ideal but now I can still use the bagger.
Latest snafu - the drive belt broke. Called for service under protection agreement. Waited little over a week for service call appt. Just after email notification of service call, got email showing how to replace a mower deck belt. Called back to make sure they knew it was a drive belt that broke, NOT the mower deck belt - the mower will spin but the tractor will not move. Was told the service techs are well stocked but will note my concerns. Service appt was this morning - tech DOES NOT HAVE A DRIVE BELT, I'll have to wait 2 more weeks for another service call. I have been an avid Craftsman user (tools, other outdoor equipment) but I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER CRAFTSMAN.

Purchased in March. Less than a year stopped in tracks while I was using. Unable to move. Many many Many phone calls and pleads to warranty repair to no avail and repairman showed up 5 weeks later. Should have been my first clue he was so busy. Drive belt slipped off pulley. 29 months after purchase stopped mowing again. Out of warranty so-called local repairman to pick up.
Final verdict... needed a new transmission. The only one he could find from several suppliers cost $900 to get it to him. Plus labor and more than it was worth... service center apologized but emphatically stated nothing they could do. Why this complaint. BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION WAS PLASTIC GEARS!!! That’s right. I said plastic gears. Their contracted provider of this mower, MTD, gave them a low price with this type of product parts. If I had known they were involed I would never have even gone to the store to price. Sears has fallen so low in recent years as to now make the Craftsman brand a joke. Hope this helps someone avoid such a disastrous expensive experience.

Purchased Craftsman 42" riding mower in July of 2008. Used it to cut 2 1/2 acres of tough, sandy mid-Florida yard liberally scattered with longleaf pine needles and blackjack oak branches. Cut this once or twice a week from early March thru mid-November every year from 2009 thru 2017. Other than replacing 3 sets of blades (probably due to sand and pine needles) I had NO trouble. Always started right up, ran flawlessly and cut very well. Maintenance was minimal and very easy. I changed the engine oil once a season and charged the battery every Spring. Still had the original battery when I gave it to my son-in-law because I moved away. He's still using it. It is a reliable mower well worth what I paid for it. The Craftsman purchase was made at Sears in the Clearview Shopping Center three years ago. It is my first purchase of a Craftsman mower. I have owned other brands, but I really rate this mower above those I've previous owned. It is so easy to start, and the close radius steering system is an added plus. It is so easy to maintain and maintenance is a breeze. The only thing I wish I would have done was got one with a standard transmission. The automatic is alright, but, I have found it is not as durable as the standard shift tractors. But still, I am satisfied with the performance. I am in the fourth year of ownership, and as such, have began to replace worn parts. But the maintenance, or repairs, so far, have not been a major problem. In 2012 I bought a Craftsman 42" 17.5 lawn tractor. Two years and two weeks later it quit running. Stopped. Called Sears. Was told it was out of warranty and would have a service charge and additional parts. Called a local repair shop, told them what it was doing and they diagnosed it over the phone. They told me that the particular tractor I bought had a manufacturing defect causing the valve lifter rocker arm to come off. Usually just after the 2 year mark. It was repaired by putting the rocker arm back on. It failed again a year later. I was constantly replacing belts, spindles and more. Sorriest excuse for any power equipment I ever owned.
I had only bought Craftsman previously, they lasted an average of 6-7 years before problems began. This one had more problems in 3 years than all the problems my others had in more than 20 years. And much more expensive repairs. Craftsman mowers WERE great. No more. I sold that one for $200 after spending $150 to get it running again. Bought a Poulan Pro (Husqvarna) from HD and my grass is cut regularly with no hint of a problem. I will never buy Craftsman again, I used to swear by them, now I swear at them.

When the warranty ended, we were fortunate my husband is a master mechanic - until we needed a part available only from an indie supplier who told us Craftsman was living on its old reputation but was no longer worth consideration. Sad commentary for the price we paid.

I was told to order the correct parts I need to tell them who the manufacturer is so I am guaranteed correct part. You tell me who it is, and support the crap you sell. I would never recommend purchasing another craftsman product. Sorry terrible customer service and support of their products. Not the Sears or Craftsman products from years ago. I’m tired of being taken advantage of when purchasing so called "quality products". I bought a rider because of the hardware in my back. I have a regular 50150 lot so the hours were really low until I left the key partially on, but anyway, I was sold on the front end being solid cast and it being a 24 hp. If I knew I couldn’t take the mower in for maintenance and would be forced to pay $95 for a guy to come to my house I would never have bought this POS.
Both wheels are facing outward and my tires are trashed. It was 4 years old when I decided I needed something done, thinking it wasn't under warranty anymore, I had the local shop look at it and they couldn’t figure out why it can’t be fixed. I bit my lip and called up Craftsman to have a guy come out and I find out it was under warranty but having someone other than Craftsman voided my warranty. So I had their guy come out only to tell me there is no fix, they would have to rig something up. So there is no fix, but I voided my warranty by having someone else try to fix it. DONT BUY CRAFTSMAN, THEY SELL **. I GUARANTEE IT.

In 2013 I purchased a 42" deck Craftsman riding mower (T3200 48" tight turn). Exactly a year later (2014) I had to call them to replace a plastic pulley for the drive belt because it broke in half. They told me that it would be a month before a service tech could come out and "diagnose" the problem. Then they tell me the part I would need is on back order for 30+days before they could get the part in. (Keep in mind we are in the middle of June where you have to cut the grass every week if not twice a week or else you're walking through a jungle.) Well after being hung up on 7 time and speaking to several representatives, 2 managers and threatening legal action, they agreed to replace the mower. I could go pick out one but only to the total cost that I paid for the old one.
Got to Sears and the mower that I currently had was no longer in stock. They had one with the same deck size but a smaller engine was in stock or I could get a bigger mower and pay the difference. I got one a little bigger and paid the difference. Exactly 2 year later (2016) the transmission starts leaking grease around the axle, had slack in the transmission axle and the PTO switch went out. They came out and repaired it at no charge. Covered under warranty and gave me a service slip showing the total cost of parts and labor $1180. (Again) exactly a year (2017) after the transmission was replaced (guess what) the transmission axle has over an inch of slack and is leaking a lot of grease. I call Sears and they say it's not under warranty, it will cost over $100 just to send a technician out and "diagnose" the problem.
Also mentions that there has been several "service notes" on the transmission so the transmission may be covered under a warranty but I will still end up paying for labor which is about $400 and the part (if I have to pay for it) is $600+. Then they tell me that the warranty on the transmission was only for 90 days after the date of service. They didn't tell me that then and it's not on the service ticket stating that. Now I'm not riding wheelies on this lawn mower or doing donuts or any of that crap so there is no reason I should have to replace the damn transmission once again. If I'm going to have to replace a transmission every year I may as well buy a damn tractor and finishing mower to cut my yard. Looks like I'll be finding an attorney to see what they think.

My $2700 G-T Craftsman 54" B&G Twin Plat. Model#917.204080 has 39 hrs. on it. The front right wheel just fell off. It was assembled by Sears, required, without adding grease. Also, the engine is losing power. Called for warranty service and was told that since it was 2 months over a year since my purchase, the mower has a two-year warranty, it could have been me that caused the grease to be removed and the engine problem could be poor maintenance.
It's only 39 hrs. old and has a two-year warranty. So I had to accept a possible $99 service charge that would be determined, in three weeks earliest, after a Sears technician, the same folks that didn't properly grease it in the first place, made a determination. The phone call with Sears Warranty Service seemed to be all about finding a gotcha reason to avoid warranty. After 40 years of being a dedicated Sears customer. It is the hardest thing on a back I have ever seen. You have to turn the key to a different position and mash a different petal just to get it to back up, then hard to get the key back in the correct to go forward, then it jumps and pops your back. The wheels will turn so far it pushes in a curve and will stall. There is no lock to keep the front wheels from locking to far over. Craftsman 71-20383 46", 19hp tractor - I bought this tractor for two purposes, mowing and snow removal. The salesman went over the tractor specs and Attachment Fit-up list to get the right snow blower attachments. Got the 71-25840 50" snow blower, the 71-24434 wheel weights, the 71-24862 chains but did not get the 71-24100 (60lb) rear weight as I had 65lbs of weights that I could mount on the back of the tractor in its place.
Got everything together, took 8 hrs to mount blower as it's a "universal" mount and some parts did not fit exactly right and wiring for lift motor was NOT for this tractors battery, solenoid location. Had to splice extra wire on to get it installed. First try was a disaster. This tractor/blower combination is best for flat ground, pavement use only! It took 30 minutes to go 50' on the lawn. NO TRACTION! It could not plow 8-10" of snow and move at the same time - it couldn't get out of its own way!
If you're a 250-300lb NFL linebacker it might of moved. The weights required and myself did not do the job. Removed the 65lbs of rear weight and replaced it with two 60lb sand tubes. It has traction now, enough that it can get out of its own way and plow snow. If you want to blow snow with this tractor, don't get the 50" blower, get the smaller blower 71-24837.

After a full year of mowing I can say that this "wrench free" design is junk and does not hold up. I have had the plastic housing around the blade clamps fly off at least six times, twice damaging the housing requiring the purchase of replacement housing parts. I love this third upgrade brand new Craftsman Pro Series 42" Auto 20 HP HP V-Twin Kohler riding mower... My complaint stands that Craftsman riding mowers are not reliable and made with bad craftsmanship. I remember Craftsman brand as tough made to last. It was the best. I received this upgraded mower 8/20/16. Cut my grass on 8/27/16 with 15 minutes smells something burning. I had read my owner manual, did my oil check, and even recheck brakes, recheck everything. Everything check out okay so I assumed it was a new engine smell. Got done cutting my yard but the smell is still coming from somewhere. This mower cost me more money than the last one because it should be a better model. So I continue my search for where it could be coming from.
I got down on my knees and look at the engine block left side is attachment IMG00718 and IMG00719 look good. Then I went to the right side kneel down look at engine block attachment IMG00720, IMG00721, IMG00722, IMG00723, and IMG00724. See what I see. Show it to any small engine expert. I had to borrowed this money to upgrade to a different model because the other Craftsman model# 25581 had it's defective materialistic and manufacturer defects issue also. This more expensive mower model# 20138 I just received last week is I call it a crack engine block intentionally sealed with some whitish metal glue or adhesive and excessive gasket glue which probably the burning smell coming from.
I paid top dollars. This is legal is not is attach images? Could not get my money back. Sears sending another exchange. Who to said months down the road what other illegal things had been done to the exchange. I will be getting and I end up footing the bill. If Craftsman intentionally tried cover up a major part as engine block what else would they do. I was called a fool for sticking with Craftsman brand. The pictures speak for themselves and yes I have video of the ending hour meter having 1.6 on it. So sad really. This what kind of product Craftsman is making these days! Wrong.
Updated on 10/15/2016: I received my exchange (2ndProSeries) on 9/10/16. See the photos of my 1stProSeries and the 2ndProSeries Lawn mower. I wrote and ask Sears about why it still have a crack, seam or whatever you want to called it over the screwhead and why my exchange have a steel cast looking hot rod looking oil drain core whatever that was not on my first one. This was the response I got back.
“I had our engineers look at the pictures you sent. When the part you pictured is casted in a mold, the mold meets at the seam lines. It is not a crack; it is a seam line and it is normal. You mentioned seeing some liquid. There are two main possibilities here and neither are harmful. Your tractor comes with some oil in it already. It is possible that when it was being added, some dripped off accidentally. We have seen this happen. Also, gaskets seep, which can cause the dark color you see. If we felt there was an issue, there would not be any problem with providing you with an exchange. However, your new unit would probably have the same characteristics as the parts are all molded and the gaskets will seep. As I said, it is not a defect and not harmful.” Both lawn mowers had more than molded and gaskets seep it just excessive. No more Craftsman for me!

Bought a Craftsman 7.25 Engine Torque Just Check & Add Front Wheel Drive Mower, as close as I could find to my Yard Man Briggs & Stratton mower from 2000, which was a gem! Should have kept it and just re-furbished it. New mowers not the same. They are made with "disposable" motors and do not even have a parts/number list. This mower ran for less than a month and then started to stall in thick grass/leaves. Brought it to repair facility (not located at Sears- it is a guy working out of his barn 25 miles away-but it is the official gas engine repair facility for Muskegon / Norton Shores Sears store). No explanation for what was wrong just that he made some "adjustments", back a month later same thing. "Tweaked" it again, but still no paperwork, no explanation for what was wrong. Worked until Fall, then 2 hours of mulching leaves stalled it and it would not restart.
By the next summer, warranty ran out, had mechanic look at it. POS machine, plastic carb that requires premium gas or it degrades, coil was shot, gas leaked into the air filter and destroyed it. Took it to small engine repair, and it ran for a day. Next day ran for 30 minutes, then began to idle down and quit. Re-started, ran for another 30 minutes and quit. Then tried to restart and almost broke my arm. Back to the shop (very good service, good reputation and excellent results). Discovered hydro locked motor due to gas filled in cylinder and also found the carbs are known to leak and they commonly put in a shut off valve. Ran for a day, now won't run. Have to go back again. Will buy another mower soon. NEVER, NEVER buy Sears mower again... Spent as much on repairs as I paid for the mower- complete junk.

Started smoking excessively and cutting out. Called technician - said he has ordered new engines for several of these and has put 2 on one ladies in 6 months...so to me this establishes a lemon issue. Mowed 2-3 times on the new engine - same thing, smoking cutting out. It quit in the middle of the yard and had to be pushed back to the shed. Called for a technician. This young whipper snapper took pictures, started it up and said they would be in contact with us in 3-4 days. (I left work to meet this guy because the window is 8-5 then they call you...aauugghh). Never called - called them back after 2 weeks and was transferred 4 different times, it was nuts!
Finally the operator in whatever department I landed in told me that it was determined as customer neglect due to the oil looking dirty! We literally have put 4 or 5 quarts of oil in this machine since it was purchased - again, before each mowing! Disputed this so they scheduled another technician - he called and I was on the other line. He left a msg for me to call him, didn't say he was in my drive or he was on his way or he was anything. Called him back 7 minutes later and he didn't answer (again, we had taken off work and been waiting all day). I called his # 8 times and he never called me back or answered. Called in to complain, they schedule another tech. I request a Friday August 5th after lunch so I can leave work early. The email appt tracker kept ticking and ticking later and later until 7:30 p.m. then it automatically rolls over to a rescheduled appt for...wait for it - SEPT 9TH more than 30 days later. All the while my grass now looks like a hay field.
So I just got off the phone AGAIN for a service tech who will be here this Friday after lunch and I requested the original guy hoping he will order another new motor/engine. In the mean time we went to town and purchased a Cub Cadet today. Never ever will I purchase any Craftsman anything from Sears. Their customer service folks, while decent over the phone, have no power to resolve issues. After reading these reviews it is obvious that there is a product issue. At 6 hours, the belt came off. I put it back on. We used it again for another 6 hours, prior to going on vacation on June 4th. The belt came off again, and then it would not stay on. Additionally, the right rear tire was showing a huge bulge in it. I had two local mechanics (loggers/tree trimmers/landscapers) look at the machine. They both said it was a lemon, and said they saw the deck was shaking too much, the belt was either the wrong size or defective, and the middle spring did not work. They added that whoever torqued down the motor and the deck did not do it to specs.
I went to the store and told them of my problems. They said, "Here, call this 800 number and a tech will come to your house. We'll probably give you a new one"... That one sounds bad. No problem, just call this number. So I called the number and spoke with Susan. She said, "We can send someone out this monday, between 0800 and 1700. You'll be there?" "Yes, I will." No one came. Every time I call I keep getting a run around. I'm told it's on the truck to the service center or it's waiting to be repaired and no one seems to be able to say what's going on. In the meantime I keep having to pay to get my lawn done. Today I call the store I dropped it off at and the guy said it may take another 4 weeks. Just great. I will not be purchasing any type of equipment at Sears. In my opinion, they suck big time, and don't care about their customers.

My new mower had the blades installed with faulty washers, causing the blades to flutter, and damage the deck (first time I used it). I got a new deck installed without charge, but the first time I used it after the repair, the discharge chute fell off, because the push cap holding the retaining spindle in place fell off. I also noticed that the new deck did not have a washout fitting installed, even though there were 2 holes in the deck for it. I called the repair people and asked to have the two things taken care of. I was told that the washout fitting was no longer available and, get this: "I could turn the mower on its side and scrap the grass off with a putty knife, or take the deck completely off to clean off the bottom of the deck!" Are those practical solutions, or what? I've had this mower about 6 weeks, and will attempt to return it and get my money back tomorrow. NO MORE SEARS PRODUCTS FOR ME!

I would recommend to anyone looking to buy a ride on mower to stay clear of the T2400, or any mower in that series. Hell, just stay away from craftsman in general. It is a poorly designed, extremely difficult to maintain piece of crap. It has no power going up even a mild incline and absolutely worse in reverse. Their extended warranty exposes you to the nastiest, most unprofessional repair people I've ever met in the customer business. The handle that engages the blades is located in very close proximity to the steering wheel causing your hand to hit it when you make turns, the blade chews up your mulching kit cover rendering it useless. And one of the worst parts is the cleaning. It has a hook up for your hose that is supposed to allow you to clean under the deck by turning on the hose and starting the blades in motion.
It doesn't work worth a damn. You wind up having to go under the blade table with a rag. And the ultimate worst is that, per its design, a huge amount of grass clippings get caught on the top of the blade table under the floor plate and foot rests and the only access to the area is to unscrew and remove the cowls on each side and physically stick your hand between the twin pulleys and drive belts that rotate the blades. It's a nightmare and this still doesn't adequately reach all the pockets of grass. You have to use a compressor blower to remove the rest. And, you have to redo this procedure each time you cut your lawn.
It takes an hour to cut my lawns, front and back and another 45-50 minutes to clean the beast. If you don't clean it every time you use it, the grass gets so packed under there, it's much harder and longer to remove, and it hinders the movement of the pulley belts which will make a squealing sound. So, if you're masochistic and have a lot of time on your hands and enjoyed being aggravated, by all means, this is the machine for you. Shame on you Sears. May your business fall into as much disrepair and the equipment you sell.

I had an old John Deere but decided to buy a new mower. I was a fool and didn't look around enough and bought the Craftsman 7400 Pro Series lawn tractor. To begin with, reverse is a total joke and trying to reverse up a very slight incline is impossible. The so called tight circle steering ends up placing the inside wheel at almost 90 degrees stopping the tractor cold. I have done 8.5 hrs of mowing and there are squeak coming from the front wheels..
Updated on 08/09/2015: I wrote a report on May 8th, 2015 and now I would like to update that report. Where do I start? Try to mow up or reverse up a very slight incline, forget it. Try to make a sharp turn, forget it as the inside wheel turns at 90 degrees and brings the tractor to a dead stop. Tried putting up with these small problems but when the deck belt flew off on more than one occasion it was time to drive this piece of garbage to the bottom of the yard and let the plants claim it as their own. I have spread the word to everyone who will listen not to buy one of these pieces of utter garbage. It's a pity because many years back Sears had a good reputation but now I guess everything they sell is made in China.

I am a single women that don’t mind getting dirty but this has been very costly and annoyed that all of you having same problem and a big name like Craftsman just close their eyes at all of us having the same problem and doing nothing.
I’m sure most of us work hard all week and a nice weekend you would like to enjoy getting your yard work done. I can't find the one gentleman that said if you take the spark plug out it cranks right over. It does work but does anyone know what to do after the plug is out - you have to put it back in because it won't start without it. My mower is out of the trailer I put it in. Now it’s in my yard, and like I said, I'm a single female. I can't leave it just sit out. Now I have to push it all the way back in the trailer.
If anyone knows what to do after the plug is out and it’s cranking freely, what’s next? I bought it in summer 2012 and then it seemed to me that’s around how old some of the other complaints have been around that year. Has Craftsman or Briggs ever heard of the lemon law? I purchased a sears craftsman 42" riding lawnmower in April of 2014 from the local sears brick & mortar store for $1700.00 along with the "3" year extended warranty. This was one of the biggest mistakes in my life. I've purchased sears products all my life because of their reputation for quality products and solid return policies --- not so the case any more. This mower is the biggest piece of "crap", that's right "crap" I've ever seen in all my life. I've worked on small engines and mowers for almost 40 years and I've never seen something so poorly put together where brand new parts on a brand new mower fail and break after 3 weeks of use.
The problems on this mower were warped deck-cutting uneven no mater how it was adjusted, engine hard to start due to incorrect valve adjustments on this briggs 22 hp twin from the factory, joke of a "plastic" hydro transmission that will hardly back the tractor up when pushed down very hard on the foot lever, the list goes on.
After doing a "kabookey" dance with their service department to get a tech to replace the warped deck with a new in box deck - after 2 uses the idler pulley on deck seizes and fries the deck belt. But if you love these issues the story get even better---When confronted with my total disgust on their product and their inability to repair a "lemon" mower, their response was - "we're so sorry you're having all these problems but you have to schedule an appointment to have it repaired". The problem with this like so many other products is that people are ----sheep----they accept this B/S and don't stand their ground and let these bastards get away with it. In my case the credit card co. was informed of a "dispute of purchase" and informed that I will not pay this amount on the mower regardless of the outcome.
The mower was brought back to the sears store where it was purchased, the operations manager "refused" to take the mower back so it was left at the store in the entrance door with the keys on the register counter. I later found out from corporate that this manager said that I had left the mower in the parking lot, what B/S. My advise to all people that are considering buying a sears craftsman riding lawnmower---turn around and don't walk away-----run. You have been warned.

I was advised that it had run with no oil and therefore (of course) it's cost me $360, bear in mind I paid $340 for it?....anyways, after escalating the issue to a customer service manager I was told that there was nothing that SEARS will be able to do since it's an oil combustion engine and it had run without oil. I will never have thought to check the oil on a brand new mower that doesn't even have 5 months of use. Needless to say this was the last Sears endorsed product that I'll EVER buy. When I called the local Sears Parts & Service Center number I was told I would have to bring my mower to them to be shipped out for 2-3 weeks for a service tech to remove the cable and install a new one. What??? The cable is fully accessible and no tools are needed as both ends have a "hook" that goes through a hole.
I asked if they were having problems with the cable since it was an odd failure to happen so soon--Yes. I was assured there would be no cost to me but this seems like a lot of unnecessary effort. I can order and pay for my own cable if I want to avoid hauling my mower back and waiting. The ONLY reason I can think of for a company to waste all this time and effort is to either get my mower there and say it's not covered then charge me a bunch of money while holding my mower hostage OR to discourage customers from getting a new cable for free and having a warranty claim to report. What would I like to happen? Send a new cable to the parts outlet and let me bring in my broken one and my receipt for an exchange.

Craftsman YT3000 Lawn Tractor. Purchased 6-2013. Design problems:
Poor Clutch Design: When attempting to slowly release clutch in a lower gear, machine leaps forward leaving the operator momentarily air born while snapping his neck backward. It is impossible to slowly release clutch for a smooth take off because the machine is driven by a "V" belt.
Poor Throttle Handle Location: When cutting close to a spruce tree with low hanging branches, the throttle, which protrudes above the hood several inches, gets snagged by a branch, bringing engine to idle.
Poor Mower Deck Height Lever Location: When cutting close to objects on the left side (as prescribed), lever hooks onto small trees, fences, telephone pole guy wires causing machine to unexpectedly spin around the vertical obstruction using the lever as the pivot.
Poor Travel Speed Adjustment Lever Location: Similar to the above but on right side.
Poor Mower Deck Engagement Lever: This lever protrudes well above the hood, snagging anything such a low branches, and in one case causing the front end to lift clear of the ground, almost flipping over backwards. This by itself is a deal breaker and reason not to purchase the dangerous YT3000.
Poor Mower Deck Engagement Lever Function: Engaging deck is easy enough. It's when disengaging, the lever snaps down upon ones knee inflicting great pain to the knee cap.
Sadly, Sears is beginning to exhibit all of the careless, haphazard, "I don't give a damn what happens after the sale, as long as we get our money" Big Box Store scams.

The order taker never wants the serial number which is (or should be) relevant. On two occasions, I ordered parts on which the freight was more than the part. One part I ordered was a new (rubber) battery hold-down strap. When I received it, it was rotted due to exposure (I suppose to sunlight). It is such a hassle to return parts that I just let it go.
I ordered a new mower deck drive belt and stored it away so that I would have it when needed. I put it on about two weeks ago and found that it was narrower than the original. Every time I would disengage the mower drive, the belt would jump off of one of the pulleys. I took the belt to a Parts + Store in Canton, TX and found that the belt was narrower than a standard "A" width belt. I bought a Gates A belt of the same length as the Sears belt and the mower works properly. In April 2013 I found myself in need of a lawnmower for my tiny < 300 square foot front yard lawn. After doing some initial research online, I narrowed down my decision and eventually found myself at Sears. I wanted a small, low maintenance mower that could keep my very small front yard lawn nicely manicured with minimal hassles. The sales rep suggested the Craftsman 149cc model stating that it was simple, small and very low maintenance even compared to electric models. During the summer season, my partner used the mower about 10 times before fall/winter season at which time we drained the gas from the engine.
Flash forward to March 2014 and the mower would not start. We called Sears and were instructed to bring it in for service and not to worry, it was covered under a two year warranty. Today, I received a call from the service center informing me that it would cost over $97.00 to "repair" the $200.00 mower. I assumed there was a mistake and reminded the agent that it should be covered under warranty. Then, much to my surprise, I was told that unless I drained the gasoline from the tank after every use of the mower, the warranty was void. I escalated my concerns to a manager at the "call center" and was recited the fine print of the warranty over and over with zero accountability on their part.
My issue is this: When I purchased the mower, I was very clear that I was looking for a low maintenance solution and was considering electric vs. gas even a push mower for such a small space. The sales rep assured me that this model had minimal maintenance and never mentioned that gas tank needed to be drained after each and every use. If this was disclosed, I would never have purchased the unit. I doubt that most people would knowingly buy one either.
Request for resolution: I simply would like to return the mower for a refund. It's clearly not what I had been "sold" and the sales strategy was deceptive at best. I will happily accept an apology from Sears and a refund to put this matter to rest. In return, they can have the mower back.
I'm willing to take this matter to small claims court based on principle if necessary and I will continue to use any and all social media outlets at my disposal to voice my concerns. I sincerely hope that this level of energy will not be required to bring fairness to the situation, however, I'm willing to do whatever is required to bring about a fair remedy; not just for me but for other people who may have similar experiences with Sears products. Thank you.

After going through a battle to actually talk to someone, I was told that the part (the technician determined what part was needed to make repair) would have to be ordered, shipped to me, and then a technician would come out and make necessary repairs on May 21, 2013. I was told shipping would take approximately 10 days. Pretty good, a machine that was used so little goes south! Way to go Sears. No wonder your business is hurting!

I always went with a Craftsman and my family always bought it from Sears. I purchased a mower for my sister less than 2 years ago. After less than 8 hours of use (mowing a lawn no larger than 7 yards by 12 yards weekly), the mower would shut off seconds after starting. After having my tune-up guy look at it, we found it had a cracked fuel line (which is under warranty). Rather than waiting the extra 2-3 weeks to send it out (and after the recommendation by the sales associate), I bought the part for $15 and repaired it myself.
Needless to say, the cracked fuel line caused more damage which now "is not under warranty" because there looks to be no damage to the fuel line. That's because the fuel line was replaced - check your records of the recent purchase and initial request for repair! The service associate agreed that the damage indeed could have happened due to a faulty fuel line, but still refused to cover it under the existing warranty. I had higher hopes for the Sears. I have utilized all their departments in the recent past (apparel, appliances, home and garden and continued auto maintenance). I will never patronize a Sears again - and will continue to post the negative experience on every social network I can find. I am beyond frustrated with a store I once believed valued their customers and stood behind their products!

I had a Honda self-propelled mower for 19 years. Excellent mower. It stopped running, so now that I am older, I want a riding mower. I bought a Bronco riding mower from Lowe’s and it used a lot of oil from the first time I mowed with it. A valve and head had to be changed and the problem was worse afterwards. And this was a new mower! I took it back. I bought a new Troy- built self-propelled mower with a key start, also from Lowe’s, and after 2 times of mowing the lawn, the mower quit. I took it back; they gave me another new one. I brought it home and it would not crank.
I thought maybe I would have better luck with Sears, so I bought a Craftsman Riding Mower. The deliverymen brought it and verbally guided me from the time I cranked the mower to where I parked it, which was approx. 7 feet in distance. I turned the engine off. It sat there for a week and now I have a puddle of oil on the carport. The mower is still showroom clean except where the oil is leaking from somewhere in the engine. Four lemons later, I still don't have a mower. I have given up hope that there are any good mowers being made. Guess I'll get someone to fix my Honda self-propelled and try to go another 19 years.

I purchased a Sears/Craftsman 30" riding mower. I used it once and then it would not start. I had to push it back into the shed from a great distance. A scheduled appointment was made for repairs to a brand new mower. No one showed up for the scheduled appointment or bothered to call and cancel the appointment. It is bad enough that a brand new riding mower is not functioning, but to take off from work for a scheduled appointment and no one shows up or calls to cancel is just plain irresponsible, lousy service. Personally, I will never purchase any items from Sears ever again and can only encourage others to do the same. This is not the Sears I remember growing up with. Shame on you Sears.

I bought a brand-new, gas-powered, push lawn mower in June of 2011. I was told that I had a 2-year warranty on it. I returned it to Sears for repairs on Sunday, September 16, due to a broken back wheel. I was told it would be ready on Tuesday, Sept. 25 and it was, but the clincher - I had to pay $3.17 for a tune up I did not ask for. I found out that the idiot service technician thought the mower won't start because it needed a new spark plug. I had to take the mower back to Sears because the technician, while repairing the back wheel, must have done something to the gas line because my mower didn't work at all. I went back to Sears, but the "Solutions" team had nothing but pat answers for me. I will never buy anything from Sears again. I even got rid of my credit line with them.

I purchased my Craftsman DLS 3500 lawn tractor Model 917 287140 in June 2007. Not only have I had to prematurely replace various parts, some being manufactured plastic parts, but my lawn mower is now inoperable because of a broken weld. On Friday, August 17, 2012, after just five short years of light use, two welds holding one of three brackets on the cutting deck broke. Needless to say, the deck has now lost its triangulated support that keeps it from over-swaying left-to-right and front-to-back. I reported the problem to Sears Customer Service, but they refused to stand behind the product saying that even welds break.

Craftsman Lawn Mower Model # 917.9998B cutting unevenly - I purchased a Craftsman Lawn Mower from Ace Hardware on 5.14.2012. From the first time I used it, the mower did not cut all the blades of grass, missing blades here and there that had not been under the wheels. As the humidity was high in the morning when I was mowing, my first thought was the lawn was too wet. But mowing in the evening, it gave the same results. I also tried mowing in different directions. And since that didn’t work either, I finally decided it had to be the mower. Well, when I called the telephone number for Sears Mower Repair, I found on the Sears Website under Warranty and Repair, I was given the number of the closest Sears store which is 55+ miles away. And when I contacted the store, I was told I had to bring the mower to the store instead of it being repaired close to my home.
To add to the obstacle this is to having the repair made through Sears that should be done under warranty, I was told once they had the mower, it would be put on the next Sears truck coming that way and delivered to Cincinnati, Ohio, which is two whole states away. And when the repair was done, the mower would be returned on the next Sears truck returning to that store. Essentially, I will be without a mower for the rest of the summer, and I will either have to buy another one or hire the work done until my mower is returned. So, I called the Sears Feedback line where I was told, “You didn’t even buy it at Sears!” among other inept attempts to distance Sears from any obligation and make it “my fault" the mower was not working properly.
With my frustration increasing, I then turned to the website, where I spent a week exchanging emails. The first email to Sears was to describe the issue I see as Sears not standing behind their products by making the obstacle to resolution so great that no one will bother. There is absolutely no other reason to do repairs two states away. The first email response apologized all over the place and told me how much Sears cared. But their resolution was to refer me to a Consumer Affairs number, and I proceeded as directed. My reception when making that call was to be told I had the wrong number. And after explaining I had been referred to the number by Sears Holding, in a puzzled tone, the man asked, “What for?” I told him I had assumed for a resolution. So getting nowhere there, I replied to the email telling them of this response. And my next email response referred me to another telephone number after adding another flowery apology and promise of how much Sears cared. This number was a mortgage refinancing entity! It’s the kind where they don’t even identify themselves. So, I assumed they didn’t repair lawn mowers or deal with lawn mower complaints, and I hung up to write another email.
The next email response referred me to yet another number, after assuring me again "how much Sears cared”. This number was also a dead end. And to add to the feel I was being brushed off, this response had begun by telling me they were sorry I was having problems with my ”lawnmower”, but ended by saying they were sorry I was having trouble with my “washer” - clearly a reflection of how much Sears cares about resolving my issue. So, my next email to them was to demand that they turn my complaint over to someone with the knowledge and authority to resolve my problem. And the response to that email was to claim they had looked for warranty or recall information on my lawnmower and couldn’t find anything with the information provided (model and serial number were not enough?) And then they referred me to another telephone number. This one turned out to be the Craftsman Power Tool Division, which had nothing to do with lawn mowers. And I am currently waiting for the next episode of the Sears Wild Goose Chase.
I hadn’t done business with Sears for years. First, because I moved to an area where there were no Sears stores. Then, I moved to areas where Sears wasn’t the only option and other businesses offered better products for a competitive price. Then Sears became known as unreliable. And I only bought this Craftsman mower because of the local availability and the reliability of Ace Hardware. It never occurred to me that I would go through all this less than 3 months after making the purchase. And if I resort to my final option and return the mower to Ace Hardware, I am punishing the very business that has been the most reliable in standing behind their products and services and has rolled out the red carpet for me in ordering anything that they don’t carry here, but that Ace Hardware can provide. So, that makes me even more angry with Sears.

I have a Craftsman Lawn Tractor still under warranty to expire on 4-29-2012. On 3-11-2012, my mower just stopped running after the engine started racing. I went an purchased a new battery but still would not start. I called Sears for warranty repair and they scheduled me an 18-day wait on 3-29-2012. I waited although with the grass is so high it was getting dangerous because of snakes. On 3-29-2012, a Sears 3rd party repair person came and said it was a simply fixed and needed a solenoid to the starter but had to order one and would be up to three weeks. However when the part arrives, I was to call Sears and they would work him in to put the part on.
In less than a week, the part arrived. I called Sears and they told me I had to wait for three more weeks and they would set me up for 4-24-2012 (3 additional weeks). I told them that I could not wait but hung up on me. I put the part on (simply process). The mower still did not start. I have now waited seven weeks for a simple fix yet the solenoid was not the fix. Because when you call Sears repair, you now get a recording and can not talk with anyone because they have you an appointment set up. I loaded the mower and took to a licensed small appliance company to appraise. The reason the engine stopped working is because the parts inside it is all broken.
I want my mower replaced since it is still under warranty. I do not want to continue to wait for a Sears repair to keep guessing what is wrong with this mower and keep scheduling me until next Christmas. I was raised that Sears is the best and have always purchased Sears products but the last several appliances I have purchased have been lemons and I had to replace out of my own pocket. I can say that I am very disappointed in the care and quality of the mower I bought and want it replaced. I do not understand why I have to keep waiting for a repair when the repair person never checked anything. Now I will be out of pocket more than the mower is worth.

On 06-02-2009, I purchased a Sears Craftsman Lawn Tractor. It was used during the remainder of the mowing season. At the beginning of the following mowing season (6-10), the tractor would not move under power. I contacted the Service Center and a technician was sent to repair the tractor. I had to wait approximately 2 weeks for his arrival. Upon checking the tractor, the technician stated that the tractor came from the factory without the proper amount of oil in the transmission. He replaced the oil against my wishes and left. After trying to use the tractor, it became immobile again. After much arguing with multiple people at Sears, the tractor was replaced on June 18, 2010.
It's now May 2011 and the new tractor has 20 hours of use on it. The drive belt flips off when in gear resulting in the tractor not moving. I've scheduled another service call and have to wait 15 days for the technician to respond. Yesterday, I noticed the frame is broken at the point the rear axle is attached. This causes the drive belt to come off. I called Sears today and talked with Alexander a Customer Service Representative. I explained to him that I found the source of the problem and would like to add that information to my work order so the technician could bring the part with him. He stated that it could not be done. The technician has to come out and examine the part, order the part and then make a return trip to install it.
I have to wait in excess of 2 weeks for a service call. This is too long. The part cannot be brought and installed in one trip because Sears will not take the information regarding what part is broken. Alexander could not find his supervisor (Jacob **) so I could talk with him. He said he would just tell me the same thing anyway. I've requested the supervisor return my call. I can't sit around waiting for weeks while my grass continues to grow. I told it to stop, but it's ignoring me. Obviously Sears has a problem with Lawn Tractors. This part has broken due to a poor design in the attachment.

I have a Craftsman lawn mower that I bought from Sears. I called the 1-800 number on the Craftsman's owner's manual, so that I could have my mower serviced. It had been a couple of years since it had been serviced. The lady quoted me a price of $89, because they were having a special. I told her to go ahead and make the appointment.
When the guy came out to service the mower, he quoted me $180. So I called the service department as well as the customer solution department after being hung up on and transferred all over the world. They told me that there was nothing that they could do and that I had to pay the price that the technician was charging me and not the price that the service department quoted me. They could not explain to me why I was being charged two different prices.
They were not also trying to work something out with me because of the two different prices. I explained to them that I had the $89 that the service department quoted me, but I could not afford an additional $80 that I was being charged. And if she had first quoted me $180, I would not have made the appointment, because I know that I could not afford that.
These people were unprofessional and could not provide me with any explanation or solution. They could have cared less, because they were not in the situation. I feel that everyone needs to be on the same page when they are providing information to customers. They wanted me to wait four days while they were to view the information and get back to me. But the technician could not wait four day to get his additional $80. And that's not saying that they would have really viewed the information and gotten back with me.
Sears has lost me as a customer. I will never step foot into another one of their stores because of their non-caring attitudes. They will never service my mower again. And I will put the word out for anyone who is considering Sears for anything.

My family and I have always trusted in the Craftsman name and in Sears stores that we buy our products from. So in the year of 2007 there was no question in our mind where we would go to buy our new riding lawn mower and blower. We knew Sears and Craftsman were both trusted names and thought that we would be taken care of no matter what happened. This year, though, we have had a change of heart on what we believe. "Trust" is a big word that is used on the web site for Craftsman, but you have lost that trust in us.
In early May of 2010 our 32cc blower went out and we took it back to the store that we bought it from. My husband talked to a sales person who told us that it was most likely the carburetor that had gone out and he had seen many of them come back but because it was no longer under warranty that there was nothing that they would do for us but get rid of it. That did not make me happy, so I brought it back home. That some month our riding lawn mower had the deck fall off that had to be welded back on and then the clutch cable broke. We went back to the store where we were told that the cable would have to be ordered. I paid for the product but was also forced to pay for shipping of the item. I received the cable and had to have it put on my self. The store did not offer to put it on or pay for shipping.
After all that was said and done the push arm broke and tore up the inside of the engine. Due to the service we were given at Sears I decided to take it to a place that worked on mowers, where I was told that the man had never seen any thing like that and it could not be fixed but in fact the whole engine would have to be replaced. I called the store where we purchased the products and the manager informed me that she would do nothing to help me with my mower but if I wanted to replace the two items she would give me ten percent off my purchase. I have called all the 1-800 numbers that you have and have received no help at all. Every person that I talk to gives me the same old story of no warranty. No help.
It is sad to know that Craftsman only stands behind their product when there is a warranty still in effect. Craftsman's website says they are America's most trusted tool brand but I have found that it no longer stands true for this American or her family. I trusted your name and your brand and you have lost not only my trust but now my business. This also holds true for the rest of my family. We will not buy another product from you until this matter is solved. I am not asking for a new mower or a new blower. What I am asking is that you stand behind your product and fix what is wrong with it no charge to me. I have always told people to buy Craftsman because they are the most trusted brand--no longer will I do that. No longer have a mower to use and will not buy a Craftsman product again.

After about the fifth time using the mower, I noticed the drive belt wasn't working properly. I had made several attempts to work on the mower myself which got me through the summer of mowing my lawn. This year I had the same problem. Only mowing my "small" yard approx. 3 times this year, I began to have the same problems. I checked the blades, checked the oil, belts, basically all the common sense things to do to make sure everything seemed to be intact.
About two weeks ago to no surprise, it just stopped pulling. I called the Sears store at which the mower was purchased, told them everything I had gone through and the steps I had taken to make it work properly. This past week, I tried to crank the mower (key start) then proceeded to pull to crank. The mower ran for for a very few minutes and then locked up. I took the mower down to Sears (Scottsboro, AL). They forwarded it on to the Chattanooga, TN service center. I received a phone call stating, "if you want the mower fixed, it'll be $249." Surprised, I asked, "why $249?" She proceeded to tell me the reason it was locked up, was that I had not properly maintained the mower and it had little to no oil. I explained that I wasn't going to pay $249 for repairs and Sears just needed to stand behind their warranty. The mower (not repaired) is to be sent back to the local Sears, I guess, for me to pick up this Thursday.

After cooling a couple hours it will mow but for only another 30 minutes.
This problem started the 2nd season we had it and Sears told us it was the belts and I believe they did this just to stall us until the factory warranty lapsed which it did. At the end of 2008 mowing season Sears Home Repair Service came out and told us it actually needed a new trans axle @ the cost of $800. So I tried the damn mower again the other day (March 2009) and nothing has changed. It will still only mow for 30 minute intervals. So I called Sears to order the service & new trans axle. Now it is $1,546 PLUS the service call!
How absolutely asinine is that? We paid $2,300 for the mower and it will be over $1,700 to repair it. The mower itself looks fairly new and the motor starts and runs perfectly. I have called several other lawn mower repair shops and the guys tell me the trans axle should outlast a couple motors. I purchased a Craftsman DS 3000 (42, 18.5 HP) lawn mower from Sears in June, 2005, for a total of $1895. With tax & delivery it amounted to over $2000. I used it as one normally would, perhaps 30 times each year since then (once a week during the summer, once a month during the winter.) I had a Sears authorized service earlier this spring to change the oil, sharpen blades, etc. at a cost of $177.
Over the 4th of July weekend, the mower stopped moving. The engine worked fine but it would not go forward or in reverse. I contacted the Sears At Home service and the same person who did the spring servicing came yesterday (July 17) to see if he could find the problem; he stated it needs a new transmission to the tune of $1029 more than what a comparable mower retails for now (on sale at the local Sears store as of yesterday.)
I asked the local manager if they could give me any consideration on the purchase of a new mower (all I ask as for free delivery which would be $75 although it's only five miles away) and my request was refused. I even called the National Customer Service who contacted the manager also and was told since the mower was over 3 years old (barely) they would not do anything. I didn't think my request was unreasonable considering the circumstances.
I now have over $2200 invested in a mower that I used at most 100 times and is a useless piece of junk. I have checked with two lawn mower repair shops in different states (North Carolina and Pennsylvania) and both have told me that this is a chronic problem with Craftsman mowers and Sears will not sell repair parts, you have to buy the whole transmission. Approximately $2200.

A little over two years ago, I purchased a Sears' Craftsman 6.75HP Self-Propelled 21" cut walk behind mower, (Model # 917.370730). For a Sears, it was expensive: ON SALE for over $300.00. I had been using the same mower (White), for 15 years and thought I would trade-up. Out of the box it broke. I took it to Sears and they fix nothing there, and shipped it to Pittsburgh PA, they fixed it but were not happy, kept it forever. Got it back, fired it up, GUESS WHAT? 15 minutes into it, it broke again, same thing! Back to Sears, got it back in time to put it away for the winter, Sears charged me the fee for having it under warranty.
NOW, I BOUGHT A TUNE UP KIT, AND NEW BLADE. PUT THE BLADE ON, AND WHAM! IT BROKE AGAIN. Took it to Sears. This time it was out of warranty. Pittsburgh calls tells me the shaft is bent. Gonna cost me $130.00. NO WAY. This mower lives in the shop. Phone tag starts. I press 4, want English, not Congolese, please hold, I wish I could've burned the calories the run-around would have used. Some obscure department head tells me the truth, "If it is out of warranty, I warn you Sears washes their hands of it." WOW, I am given the number of the "Lawn Equipment Recovery Department".
I call and the lady on the other end listens to my story, hey after the third or fourth time telling it, I got it down pat. She calls Pittsburgh, and then tells me there is nothing she will do. In fact she says that had the very fragile, poorly designed expensive lawnmower been in the shop MORE FREQUENTLY, they might do something about it. She also says that the parts that the mower were in for in the past WERE ALL THE SAME, and implies that its because I used it. I ask if she thinks I spent 300 because I 'collect' mowers, and want this one in Mint Condition?
In the end nothing is accomplished. The mower is relatively new so I can't afford to refuse the repair and have the mower delivered as JUNK. I can't trade it in, she won't do that either. So I called Pittsburgh and told them to fix it. Then I called a local equipment shop and told them to expect me bringing a Crapsman to them for a trade in, as I cannot trust the mower, or Sears' repair, and will never buy from Sears again. I spent over $300.00 initaialy for what I believe to be a defective product, then shelled out $130.00 again to repair it yet again.
