I got sick and moved 2000 miles away from the club and they are forcing me to pay 6 months trainer sessions to the tune of $165 a month even with proof from the doctor and my mailing address. Stay away. Not worth the hassle.

After notifying Retro Fitness of my medical reasons for having to take time off from my program (hip replacement). I was told my account was FROZEN, my credit card was billed $280.00. I cancelled the card immediately. I approached Ms ** and was told it was a billing error. The following month they attempted to bill my card another $280.00 on the frozen account. After numerous calls with no return calls I was told by their representative that I was reimbursed for the $ 280.00 and Quote "she was tired of this ** and she would have Ms. ** call me." No Call. I have now filed a claim in court to get my money back. They also have a collection agency trying to get $199.00 from me on monthly dues on the FROZEN ACCOUNT. A firm warning stay away from this sleazy underhanded, LYING outfit.

They make it impossible to cancel your account - so many hoops to jump through. This should be a simple process. If you do to want a product or service, you can get out. Terrible customer experience. DO NOT JOIN THIS CLUB, you will have a difficult time getting out. Between my wife and my accounts, I feel like Retro Fitness (New City) stole over 2 years of money from my family. $19.99 x 2 = $39.98 a month at 2 years is $959.52 for nothing. Someone needs to do something about this gym. They take advantage of customers.

Bad customer service - the membership contract is set up to make sure you have a most difficulty to cancel and if you make any mistake sending your Certified Mail cancellation, your credit is ruined that you worked hard to keep clean! ABC Financial - the corporation doing the billing for Retro has hundreds of bad reviews at BBB websites and Retro has disputes and low rating and well as at the customer affairs website, 148 1 star review speak for itself!
The gym experience is the worst of all and the employees are ignorant and disrespectful to customers. This is due to the business setup, they know you will need to go through difficulties if you want to cancel your membership, so they don't need to be curious and polite to customers. I recommend everyone NOT TO SIGN UP with Retro or any other gym that has ABC Financial as partner. This business setup show that the gym is not customer experience centered! They are money and greed centered! I hope my experience will save you from headache and problems.

I joined a local Retro Fitness in NJ while I was a part time college student at Rutgers University. I was told I could cancel in person at the gym when I returned back home to Pennsylvania. What a nightmare this has been. They told me I could not cancel at the gym, had to send a certified letter to the company. Tried that, no response. Tried sending a certified letter to their business office "ABC Financial", no response. I gave up trying to communicate with them as I did not have time to continue to send certified letters or drive back to NJ to settle this.
Just this week I receive a "collections" letter from them for $180 dollars for back dues. I canceled that membership, or so I thought and now I get this letter. When you call them they refer you back to Retro which is a joke because they refer you back to ABC. I followed instruction I was given and now they are putting me in collections. That is absolutely extremely poor business management practice and I now risk a bad report in my credit rating I have worked hard to maintain. Retro Fitness is the absolute worst, stay AWAY!!!

(FOREST HILLS NEW YORK UNION TURNPIKE LOCATION) Signed up few months ago for a MONTHLY membership. Did not want to be part of the gym for no more than 1 month. Matter of fact, I did not even use their facility ONCE after I signed up even for that 1 month I wanted. I came back from my vacation couple weeks ago to find out they had me sign a YEARLY contract that I NEVER wanted. Manager Alexandra, owner, district manager and head of customer experience John-Michael are not taking care of my matter. When a client from ANY business wants to talk to the district manager for a problem, businesses take it serious. Not this one. I understand every Retro is personally owned and operated. But, you are carrying the Retro Fitness name therefore I hold the entire company liable. Do not recommend any location.

Retro Fitness has proven to be one of the worst gym experiences of my life. AS per their policy, I notified them 60 days in advance to tell them of my termination of membership. This was in November of 2017. In late December or early January I began receive numerous phone calls daily from ABC Financial Services telling me that I have an outstanding balance of app. $61.00. Apparently, Retro Fitness had charged me for the months of December and January. When I spoke with a representative from ABC Financial Services they basically told me I need to resolve this with Retro Fitness. I went over to the Park Slope location in Brooklyn and spoke with the manager and a desk clerk lady. George, the manager, told me that I needed to pay 31.33 and the matter would be taken care of.
I paid the 31.33 and have the receipt as well as the Cancellation Form I signed. He assured me that this issue would be resolved, notated in their system, and ABC would be contacted so their harassing daily phone calls would stop. As of February 13, I am still getting daily phone calls from ABC Financial. I spoke with ABC again and told them I had pay 31.33 and have a cancellation form in my possession and they still directed me to Retro Fitness to deal with the matter. They said I still show an active account.
I called Retro Fitness twice today and spoke with a young lady that basically told me George ** was unavailable and now working at a different location and that she would give him the message. I think it is absolutely ridiculous that I am still dealing with this and I do not understand why it is so difficult to be removed from their system. I will never recommend this gym and am very regretful that I ever joined this one. Which I might add, it was incredibly easy to do so. Much different though when you try to get out. I'm pretty certain a cult might be easier to leave.

When I inquired for Retro Fitness they were to notify me when opening which was a year later in August. They never did. In Sept of 2017 they took out 99.00, Oct 99.00, Nov 99.00. Well December they debit 159.00. I call them to ask why I was being charged and ask why this wasn’t canceled. I have never been there yet was charged for tanning bed I never used, a trainer I never had. I have yet to be in store in Gloucester Twp Retro Fitness. I was told it would be taken care of. It never was. I called bank and had money returned and stopped. Now ABC Financial is calling me 8 times a day. Oh and membership was only suppose to be 30.00 month. I asked for proof I was there. Other place scan your card or you sign. I did neither cause I never was there. They need to stop. Now I’m in credit bureau but I’m disputing it and asking for proof I made these charges. Still no reply it’s been 3 months.
Updated on 03/01/2018: This is disgusting. A manager and you don’t reply but continue to bill for what now it’s 197.00 being charged from Retro Fitness in Gloucester Township. Been told by ABC go to club to settle. Ummm the manager is no longer there just a cleanup guy trying to get it smoothed over. But now I get called everyday and placed in credit bureau which I’m disputing. My next step is a lawyer to follow up. I’ve never been in this gym or any Retro gym. I’ve never signed up for such stuff. I was told in June 2017 they would send a letter upon opening. I would have to reapply. I guess they lied and added all these charges up.
Beware of crooks and be careful. Do not pay in advance. Use cash. I am asking for sign in proof. Every fitness place should have you personally sign in with your signature and mark off what you used that day. Maintenance fees and the place is a mess, bunch of crooks. Do background checks on employees. Retro in Gloucester Township is a bad place. Note Moorestown Retro list the same manager.

Joining the gym, very easy. Cancelling or getting someone on phone/someone from corporate to contact about customer service... Impossible! November 2017 I saw online via the new owners that the Retro in Bellmawr NJ was closing. I saved all the images and articles about the closure and the new gym and contacted customer service via their website. Emails were successfully sent however no one got back to me. December 1, 2017 I am charged my monthly fee and the maintenance fee. December 6, 2017 I receive email from Retro of Bellmawr stating they are closed. December 6, 2017 receive email from Retro Corp, saying that Bellmawr closed suddenly, they had NO idea and I was being routed to another location. HMMM... I have proof you knew in November it's not sudden!
Call ABC Financial, who was listed as the POC on the email from Retro Corp. Ann ** although polite had no idea what I was talking about. She asks me to send her all info I have and the emails, which I did and then sit tight for 48 hours until they can "figure it out". Receive email from ABC Financial to not contact them anymore on December 8th to contact my new location for cancellation procedures. Send two more emails via the website... Have delivery proof, yet no responses. Call new location, employee tells me I have to come in to cancel or send certified letter both on my dime, for a gym that closed on me, yet charged me monthly fee, maintenance fee, forced me to a new location farther away and now wants gas or postage on top of my time.
I go into location on Dec 12th to cancel. Brad says, "Ok, fill this out however you are going to be charged for January too." Say what??? No Brad I am not! Yes I am apparently. His sound advice was to call my bank or credit card company and have them stop/decline payment. That can't be good business! I ask for copy of cancellation. The printer is broken so I have to take a photo with my cell. Before I left I took the GM's card. I emailed her this morning. Have yet to hear back from her. I have proof they knew about this prior to December 6th, don't lie. I was being proactive by contacting them. I don't feel any member of a gym that closes down should be charged for services, nor should they have to jump through hoops to get a cancellation. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! NOT RESOLVED.

I was a member of Retro Fitness since Aug. 24, 2016. It didn't take long to realize I no longer wanted to use the services provided by these facilities. Their customer service and how misinformation and "take advantage" tactics gave me a bad taste. Prior to my 1 year mark, my wife and I, went to the franchise that we originally signed up with and they said, "Sorry, nothing we can do until Aug. 2017."
So this was a bummer; however, we asked what we needed to do in order to cancel and ensure we won't be members as of Aug. 2017. The associate (which is usually a young adult or teenager) said, "you are not enrolled in Auto-Renew" and since we came in and requested to cancel that would be all and as of Aug. 2017 we wouldn't be active members of Retro Fitness. I was billed in September, I was billed in October. I called the franchise they said, "You account is no longer active here, we decided to automatically send it to another franchise that you visited more recently. Sorry, we can't help you." This was alarming to me because it appeared that they auto-renewed my wife and I for another year with this organization. This is something we specifically asked when we signed up and when we attempted to cancel. I called the new franchise that my account was supposedly switched to and they couldn't help me either for cancellation.
My wife and I are active duty military and we are being bullied by this notion that (There is nothing we can do, you are obligated to remain members at this Gym) and we DO NOT want to be a part of this in any way. I am going to be reporting my subsequent charges as fraudulent and contacting my credit financial institution with this report because I don't feel like being threatened with placing my account in collection for something I did not approve of is even remotely acceptable. This has been a nightmare. I am busy but if this isn't resolved in writing in a timely manner and/or if I am charged in November from ABC Financial recurring payment, I will be taking the legal approach with the Federal Trade Commission. I don't know how this continues to go on and on and on with all of these reviews, claims and truthful stories of unfair treatment to a customer.

I called to cancel my membership for medical reason. They refused to cancel and told me they were going to continue racking up charges to ruin my credit. Also I started my account at 5 pm on the 9th of the month. At 1 am on every 9th they charge my card. If you haven't transferred funds yet because it's the middle of the night and technically you still have 16 hours until it's due they will double charge you for late fees. Their membership is 20 dollars and their late fee is 20 dollar even when you still have an entire day to pay it. What kind of scam is that.

My wife joined Retro Fitness with good intentions. She signed a piece of paper that evidently committed her to a whole year of hell. She started out, was supposed to meet with a trainer, and was disappointed that the trainer cancelled. Then she tried going to the place to do some exercise, and was quickly disappointed in the treatment of customers. The trainer never met with her, she got no instruction in how to use the equipment, and generally had no satisfaction with the company. She has attempted to contact the management to cancel her membership. No help there, she had more problems. They kept repeating that it was her fault, that she had to pay the money through the whole contract. They charge more fees all the time, use a collection agency to harass their customers, and the whole business appears to be a total rip-off. Beware!

Retro Fitness in Flemington NJ. I'm glad I'm no longer a member here. While the gym itself is nice and I like the people I workout with, I have to say that during a difficult time with a personal information, they decided to charge us many late fees even though payments were made in cash. But even a few days after the payment date, they like to charge the $19.50 late fee. I wouldn't recommend this gym at all. They claim to want to help but when it comes to money - they have no problems sucking you dry.

When I initially signed up for my membership in November 2015, I was under the impression that there was no contracts like the email had stated. However, when I tried to cancel 45 days later because I had become pregnant, I was told that I could not cancel until I have waited a year because I was binded into a contract. However, the emails sent stated there were no contract, no enrollment fees, no annual fee, etc. However, because I was pregnant, I sent my doctors note and they had frozen my account from Feb 2016 to Sep 2016. I had only went to that gym once during my membership. I decided to go and close the account on July 15, 2017 and was told that I have to wait 21 days for them to cancel my membership and that I would be charged another month's fee on the 24th of July and an annual fee on the 1st of August.
This is so bogus. If I cancel my gym membership on the 15th of the month, my membership should be cancelled as of that day, not 21 days later resulting in more and more fees to pay. I am already paying another gym closest to my job monthly because I work 22 miles from my home and Retro Fitness is about 8.5+ miles from my home. The general manager didn't even care and other associates stated they have this conflict all the time. This is the worst thing a gym can do is impose more fees even after the date a client signs to cancel their membership. That is a ripoff. These should be deemed unfair business practices.

Well, here I am still being charged and still being given the run around!!! I cannot believe I was dumb enough to trust these scoundrels. I have been calling regarding this issue for two months, if not more, and I have been told "Someone will be getting back to me"... No one has bothered to contact me but they sure did charge me this month!!! Unreal. If you choose to join this gym, do yourself a favor and DO NOT pay on your credit cards or debit cards. The RETRO FITNESS in WEST BABYLON Manager Audrey ** has refused to assist him with this situation and continues to insist it is her right to not agree to the email cancellation policy of the company, each Franchise can do what they please. When I submitted my letter advising that I wished to cancel (giving them 60 days notice as specified in my agreement sent by CERTIFIED mail as required) I received a phone call today advising me that I was locked in a year contract. I insisted that there was no way I was informed of any contract, because there wouldn't be a chance in hell that I would have agreed to one. So my complaint has to do with my gym membership. I was with fitness plus when Retro Fitness took it over about a year and a half ago. I had been with fitness plus since 2007. I canceled my membership on December 31, 2016. I had called the previous week before, around the 18th and spoke to the manager, Wilson. I asked him if I can close my membership and he said sure he just have to come in and sign a document. I asked him when I can come in do it, and he said I had to come in when he was there. I work 8 to 6 Monday through Friday, and he is there those hours during the day. The next time I was able to go was December 31 which is a Saturday. So I went in there on December 31 and asked to cancel my contract. This is what I was told that it was required to have 45 days to cancel my contract. He had said that I was gonna get charge for the month of January. He said the payment was gonna come out on January 6.
I canceled my debit card because I didn't want them taking money out of my account when I canceled the contract. I never signed any documents saying that to cancel my membership it would take 45 days. I also did not receive any of that information when I called him and asked to cancel my membership. If it was so important and vital why didn't he tell me that I needed to give him 45 days notice when I called him and asked him when I can come in.
So now I'm getting harassed by the billing company they have that takes care of the billing for the gym. I constantly get phone calls and emails regarding this. I call the billing company and explain to them what the issue was. They told me they weren't able to help me because they were just the billing company. I told them the situation and they said they would still bill me. I told the representative on the phone that I never signed any documents regarding the 45 day notice. She told me that I would need to contact the gym to prove that. I don't think it's my responsibility to have to prove that I didn't sign something when they are trying to get money from me. I'm being harassed.

I tried canceling my membership because I had moved away and informed the club of this. I talked to a Taylor that worked there and had signed me up for my membership and she said she would get it taken care of. I kept receiving mail saying that I didn't pay my membership and I called them and they said that there was no note in the system to be canceled and Taylor does not work there anymore. They also informed me that it could not be canceled early. I was not informed of this when signing up and sped through the signup process. I called and tried talking to a manager and they were not there and I could not get the schedule of the manager to call back and talk to them.
Shortly after I get a call from a collections agency saying I owe them for the membership. I told them I tried canceling it and emailed and talked to them multiple times but they would not listen and now it is causing problems with my credit. I would stay away from them and not do business with them. They just want your money and they are on a commission base system for selling you a membership.

Beware of Retro Fitness. I signed up and was hastily sped through "click to agree" questions on an iPad, unknowingly agreeing to an optional 9.99/month group fitness fee. When I called Corporate I was told to contact the club. I went to the Retro Fitness Wilmington, Kirkwood Highway club on Friday 12/9 at 3:30 PM and was told by a young lady working the desk to call back tomorrow from 1-5 when the manager Mike was working, and that he would gladly remove it. I was told that this fee was happening to many members. I called today and was told by Mike that this was something explained to me, that I agreed to, and that he WOULD NOT remove the fee. I am totally disgusted by these sly business practices and the outright lie that their desk representatives are saying to their customers. And to think, I paid a cancellation fee to Planet Fitness for this place, not knowing they would try to screw me in the end!

I walked into the Retro Fitness club to sign up for a regular routine exercise. The guy at the counter brought me into the small dark room to talk to the manager, Joseph **. Joseph convinced me to "try out" the personal training for $145 a month. I agreed to try and sign only one last page (I wasn't aware of that) in the total darkness while being exposed to some personal conversations about Joseph's motivations, problems, and personal details I didn't care about for a split second. He didn't give me the copy and said I'd receive it via email. When I recovered the email which went directly to Spam, it was too late to cancel as they only give you 3 days to change your mind about the membership. Only later I understood why Joe ** wouldn't stop talking - it was an old brilliantly dishonest sales trick to distract my attention away from the services and plan, and focus it on immediate payment.
He made me believe in some kind of fictional hype of this gym's benefits by using the non-stop talk, dark room, extremely small font in the document, and other con man sales tricks he had in his hat. He gave me the paper to sign which happened to be only one page out of a few that I had no idea about... All in all, my membership is set for auto-renewal without my control. $145 for personal training that I hated! Plus, $20 for a regular gym membership, just to walk through the door, plus taxes and penalties if you decide not to pay for services that were never rendered. To cancel it, I have to be significantly sick (literally) with the proof that I can't exercise. The only real chance to cancel this membership is if I'm dead (in their dream), otherwise, it's practically impossible.
The current situation is that I have to pay $2100 for a year because I canceled my credit card on them, or almost $200 a month plus penalties despite the fact that I hate this club, find the services most unprofessional and do not want to ever see their faces again. If I decide not to pay the artificially created balance, my credit history will be negatively affected forever. Now, I see so many complaints of the same nature here on ConsumerAffairs.com and on BBB. Can anybody explain to me what's the point? Does this service here have any function to help consumers who were tricked into something unexpected and/or scam? Is there any way to get help?

To anyone and everyone wishing to join Retro Fitness and their partner ABC Financial think very hard about this decision. When you join they make it seem so easy that in the event you wish to cancel all you need to do is contact ABC Financial and you're done. You need to send a certified letter explaining why and even then it takes a number of monthly cycles before it actually cancels. Why does this have to occur... why won't e-mail work? Why... because they manage to squeeze out a couple more months before that occurs.
The truth be told, the problem is not with ABC Financial, the problem is Retro Fitness. In speaking with ABC Financial the power is with Retro Fitness and their manager, they have the ability to waive any late fees or cancellation fees but they will not do that. I had a problem with a credit card that I had to change due to fraud. By the time Retro contacted me the late fees continued and they refused to waive them. Use another gym, they are rude and arrogant as I received numerous phone calls and threats to send my account to collections. Done with them...

The gentleman that took care of me assured me that if I received a charge for the 4th of the month, to contact the manager. I indeed received a charge.
I called the facility and told them the situation. The lady I spoke with read me the policy about the 30-day notice, etc and was rude. I told her that was not the information repeated to me by 2 other employees and that they should honor their word regardless of the policy. She then proceeded to tell me about the radius of my moving distance not qualifying under the cancellation of contract. This particular facility in Fairfield is managed by those with little concern for the satisfaction of its clients. In particular in the area of membership, the individuals managing are masters in the skill set of deceit and manipulation. I have attended the facility in Belleville and can state that this is no better except that this gym does not pretend to care so you are not misled. You can either put up with it or not.
I suppose it would not be fair to presume that all Retro facilities treat their clients so poorly and I have not been in all the various gyms but it must be noted that the same corporation that hired the Fairfield master manipulators did so with intent to discount the value of their clients because as a company they do not care either. There are certainly enough individuals out there looking for work who truly understand customer satisfaction. There may be higher fees in other gyms but you get what you pay for. You can pay less and get disrespected by unprofessional staff members or you can pay more and get appreciated with special free offers and a professional team to make your visits/training pleasant.

My membership was due to renew in June and I called/emailed Retro in April to cancel my membership. I received an email that same day stating my membership was cancelled and my last payment would be June 6th. Well, since then, I've received charges on my credit card for the annual fee of $39 plus charges for the month of July and August. My husband disputed the charges with our credit card company. Now I'm receiving harassing mail, emails and phone calls about my account being delinquent. ABC Financial said they have no record of the cancellation, so I forwarded them a copy of the email. This still has not stopped them from calling/emailing. I told them that I contacted my lawyer. Did they care? No! I don't understand how the BB doesn't get involved with this business, since this is an ongoing problem.

I was a member of Retro Fitness and they are running a strange program. First a few months after joining the White Flint area location also some may call it Kensington they had an open house. I won a contest and was told that I had won a free lifetime membership and later switched up and said it was for a year and later I was told it would only good for six months free. That was it for me and I told them that when the six months was up I was done. I stop going and they would not close my account. They were not helpful or polite. Then they tell me that I have to pay two more months to get out of the gym membership. They will not get another dime from me. If you are smart don't join. You will regret it. I am going to take legal action if they don't get this garbage solved!

When I first went to Retro Fitness, I got interested because of the price and the convenient location close to work. I got a deal for $20 a month. When I was signing up, I asked if it was a contract, and they said no. (My mistake, I should have read the fine lines.) After 3-4 months, I wanted to switch gym and went to cancel the direct payments, I was told I would have to wait 1 year to do so because it was a contract.
They are so sweet when they want to scam you and rip you off, but when you want to cancel, they get so nasty, unavailable and demanding all kind of paper through mail that first of all you did not go through such a hard time to sign up, why now to cancel. Anyways, I never paid it, I did not cancel and they got me on collection dept. Retro Fitness is a NO. This gym is on 98th St. Brooklyn , NY.

I wish I had read these reviews. I had a similar with cancellation and billing. First, I was told by the gym that I could not continue to use the gym if I canceled before the last day I used the gym, even if I had already paid for the month. Next, after I was charged a cancellation fee and canceled my membership, the gym charged me for that month. I disputed the issue with American Express. They sent over a contract stating that I need to cancel 30 days in advance. I had American Express place a block on the vendor, but I am still having issues contacting the billing office. The staff at the gym I use said they couldn't help me and I need to contact corporate directly.

Apparently in your LOC you are suppose to specify you would like TANNING, CHILDCARE, AND YOUR MEMBERSHIP cancelled. You cannot just write: "I would like to cancel my membership." You have to specify all the items you would like or you will continue to be charged for whatever you don't specify. SCAM!!! Each time I sign a document stating that I will be charged for one additional month after my cancellation request (Fine. Not fine but fine) and then that will be my final payment. Then miraculously each time after that final payment date, I am still being charged months after!!! This happened 2 times already. Finally, I get someone to say I am finally eligible to cancel my membership. I make sure all my auto-renewals are turned off (I was looked in the eye and told auto renewal was off). I make sure I sign ANOTHER one of those damn papers that say I will owe only one additional payment and then my membership expires as of 4/23/16. Guess what? It's July and I was charged each month after April.
I call them to first ask if I am still a member of the gym, at which point they said, "No your membership expired 3 months ago," which I already know, which just confirms that I am not even a member anymore and yet they are still stealing my money!!! How this could possibly be because everything and everything has been cancelled and magically they have no idea how or why I am still being billed. The bank advised me to cancel my debit card, which I did, but now I'm reading from other reviewers that this only leads them to send my bill to a collection agency, which is terrifying.
At this point I would rather spend hundreds even thousands on a lawyer to stop this madness than to give Retro Fitness another penny. I contacted the Better Business Bureau and they will be dealing with this as well. I don't know what else I could possibly do for them to stop stealing my money. I pray the owner winds up in jail. I have been at this gym for over ten years. It was sold and now there has been a new owner since Dec. 2014. Since that time, I and members have been told repeatedly that the gym is going to be totally revamped "soon." Nothing has been done. Members have been told a smoothie bar and cardio theater is coming. Their website states that we already have this in the gym. All lies and false advertising! Treadmills and cardio equipment is broken and not fixed. When I or members tell the manager, he says that he will take care of it but nothing happens. This has been going on since this new owner has taken over. He is rarely in the gym. I don't care about a smoothie bar but just take care of what is in the gym!
But this week has been the last straw. The gym has been extremely hot since Wed. night, May 25, with temps ranging from 89 on Thursday, May 26, and 86 each day thereafter including today, May 30. When I complained to the manager on Thursday, the 26th, how hot it was, I was told the a/c was on and it takes a while to cool the place. Really? Since Wednesday! He finally put up a sign saying they were aware of the a/c situation yet nothing has been done! It has been 6 days and still is not fixed. It is unhealthy to work out because of the heat. I have written to the corporate office twice and have not heard back. This is all very frustrating. What recourse do I have about all this? Can you help?

I was not notified in any way that the contract would be automatically renewed and when they drew up the contract it was done on a tablet not on paper. We looked at the contract and there was nothing on it about automatic renewal.
After the year was up they started calling us saying that we signed up for automatic renewal which we were never told or notified in advance or shown any proof that we did so. Now they have been calling us everyday to get the monthly funds that we used to pay before and threatening to send it to collections agency damaging my credit. Do not fall into their trap. Make sure they give you paper contract and explain everything on it. Read and reread the fine print if there is any on it. When we spoke to the assistant manager she admitted that she does that with all her customers and felt no remorse for the situation they put us in.

I joined Retro Fitness in late 2012, early 2013. Everything was fine. Fast forward to January 2014, I was asked if I wanted to get a free personal training session. I agreed and figured that it would be good for me to try the personal training. When signing up for the personal training sessions with Terry **, I mentioned that it was free and what a condescending attitude he had, saying that it was not free, but complimentary. I said they told me it was free, and he said they never said that. I should have ran then, but I was naive and I signed up anyway. When I trained with him, he told me to warm up on the treadmill or elliptical for five minutes. When I was done with the warm-up, I would find him signing more people up and I had to wait for him. During the sessions he kept looking at his watch and saying to do a set of ten reps of whatever exercise it was and he would be right back.
He kept doing this for the three or four sessions that I had with him. After that, I was told that another trainer was going to be working with me. Okay fine. I worked with her for a few weeks. She would give me these exercises that I just couldn't do and she would say, "Come on. You can do it. Just a few more." I would try and do the sit-ups. I had to sit up, turn, grab these squares (6 squares stacked in a row), turn to the other side and place it down. I could do a few, but age that my body just wouldn't cooperate. She was nice, but can't you see that I can't do this? I am 5'5 inches tall, and, at the time I would say that I was 160 pounds. Once she showed me to get under the rack where all of the weights were stored and hold on the bottom of the rack and pull my lower half up to the ceiling. I was told that I could work on my own when I didn't meet with her. When I did, I never did that exercise.
I found that to be dangerous, if they should fall over. Another time she told me to lean against a wall and bring my legs out while holding the wall and push myself up with my arms. I did it one time and one of my arms went numb for a few days. I wonder if the trainer was even certified. When I first signed up for the training, I was told that I could get my file from the filing cabinet and update my cardio log when I was done with my workout. I didn't go to the gym for about a month or so. When I finally went back and went to go to the file to log my workout, I had this little nasty man named "Justice" come up to me asking me what I was doing in there and telling me that I couldn't be in there and closing the door of filing cabinet. I explained to him that I was told that I could log my cardio workouts on the paper in the filing cabinet.
Everything settled down and he told me that the trainer that I worked with was gone and that EFT was gone and that Retro Fitness had taken over their accounts. I should have asked for something in writing, which would prove that fact, but you live and you learn. I didn't know what was in store for me. Boy, oh boy. I worked with my final trainer for the rest of 2014. She took measurements, and my weight and sent me the info to my phone, which the others didn't do. I liked her and all, but I realized that I needed to reduce my expenses, because I had and continue to this day to pay out-of-pocket for my school, which close to $600 a month on top of rent and my other expenses. School is a priority for me because I have to worry about my future and other things have to wait.
With all of my other expenses, I realized that my expenses were more than my income, so I told my trainer in October that I would not be renewing my personal training contract. I explained to her the same thing that I just mentioned here. She said that she understood and she would show me exercises to do at home. January 2015 comes around. I'm on the treadmill. I see a guy talking to someone and looking at me. I get off of the treadmill and he approaches me, asking me if I want to sign up for the personal training. I said that I couldn't and explained to him my financial situation. The next day I am on the elliptical and a young woman approaches me and asks if I want to work with her. I explained my financial situation to her as I did with the last two trainers. She says "okay" and walks away. August 15, 2015, I sign up for bill pay with my bank. My schedule is pretty full with work, school, and studying and at the time overtime.
I pay my bills, but didn't' look at my statements (shame on me). I decide to look at my statements online and I see that Retro Fitness is still withdrawing money from my checking account automatically, because, when I first joined, I gave them my debit card so they would be paid on time. They took a total of $595.00 for me for training that I didn't receive. A $140 charge I guess for the renewal, $80 one day and the very next day, another $80, plus the charge for the two sessions a month that I initially signed for. At any time after January 2015 did anyone come up to me in any way, shape or form to say "Hey, why aren't you using any of the sessions that you paying for?" Nothing. They just took my money for nothing. Then I find out that I have to send a certified letter 60 days in advance in order to cancel the personal training sessions. And come to find out that the contract doesn't expire.
It automatically converts into a month-to-month contract after your initial year is up. I know that I was careless and stupid for not digging out my contract and reading it, but it would have been nice to have someone make me aware of that fact. It only would have taken about five seconds of their time to tell me. But a contract is a contract, so I'm out of luck. They have their contract to back them up. Being that I was ignorant of the cancellation policy, and that all three trainers failed to tell me how to properly cancel, I didn't have the certified recipient and letter requesting to cancel, so my bank had to deny my claim.
All was fine before I signed up for this personal training. That was one of my mistakes. The other mistakes I am ashamed of, and believe me I paid financially and emotionally for my stupidity, ignorance and carelessness. I just want to warn others out there if I could. I just told this long story to warn others to stay away from this gym, at the very least this personal training. If you sign up for the gym, please be warned to be careful. Unfortunately, it may be too late for some people who didn't read reviews before joining.
I have had my attorney try and get them to refund me, citing the Evergreen Clause. As of today I have not received one response from them. All the response I got was harassing emails and phone calls at every phone number I gave them every week requesting money for my membership. They sent me to collections. That was their only response. Although I was furious that they did this to me, I bit down hard on the bullet and I settled with them and paid them off so it wouldn't ruin my credit.

I signed up with this gym late last year. To my surprise I didn't know there would be so many issues with this gym until I started looking into getting personal training for the first time. Though I'm not new to fitness I had never had a personal trainer before and I needed to learned many things on working out with those machines in there, proper technique, etc. I was first appointed to a trainer I thought was a good trainer after watching with his clients so many times before asking for his help, might be a good one to start out with. But boy was I in for a treat, he seemed to know somewhat on working out but lack a lot of skills in trainer female clients. He would give me same old workouts, rotating them with other clients that were men. When I asked him many times to show me other things with machines or workouts for the female anatomy, only thing he would say is "We are all the same". Huh!
That didn't make sense to me so after dealing with that and his unprofessional attitude doing other things in the gym like talking about others there and playing games on his phone I got rid of him so to speak, until he sent me a text before I could come in to cancel all sessions with him next day. As he said we weren't working out and he thinks I would better be fitted with other trainer there instead, in a short text late at night not even confront me properly. Then I was appointed another trainer few weeks ago which did not work out since I had to pay her for everything including advice on looking at my workouts just to tell me what she thought of them. Asking for $30.00 per workout, ridiculous since I never heard that before from previous trainer or anyone paying like that. This female trainer then surprised me at last minute when I show up to workout with her to tell me she can't and I needed to talk to manager there.
"Whats going on?" I ask. Well manager called her out on charging me for advice so she refuses to work with me that day and future appts. despite all else when I'm paying her. Having done nothing wrong but ask manager for help looking over my works which he called her out on. Wow! Crazy! Those trainers so immature and unprofessional, be watchful about hiring them. Now I'm paying without any trainer's help and being left in the cold on whole situation with still paying for no one and hoping the manager fixes this a second time around, stuck in contract with gym membership and trainer contract I'm so frustrated!

The Personal Trainer, Mark is a salesman. That was what I had forgotten, when I was approached by Mark to try out a free personal trainer session. Thus, Little G (12 year old minor child) and I sat at the personal trainer desk with Mark as he typed on his computer to formalize an agreement regarding said services.
However, the problem that arose for me, afterward is what was the specific terms of the agreement that I signed up for. Mark had control of the computer and what it displayed on the screen. My understanding of what I thought I was signing up was to pay $420.00 for 36 personal trainer sessions. Mark checked off the box on the computer for the personal trainer services to be a recurring fee that gets billed on my account. However, at the time he discussed the recurring fee option, he told me that my account wouldn't be billed until after the 36 sessions were completed, and I met with him to discuss if I wanted to continue getting personal trainer sessions.
After I signed the electronic pad, I failed to get a copy of the contract I signed. Mark had encouraged Little G. and I to continue working out that night, and that an envelope would be left for me to pick up. When Little G and I were leaving that night, Mark was nowhere to be found, and there was no envelope left for me either. Little G, Nic, and I had sessions with Personal Trainer John. After I had signed up for Personal Trainer sessions, Mark had advised that he would have me train on and off with Donna and John. However, we never had a session with Donna. John was a great personal trainer. I don't want this complaint to diminish that.
However, a billing issued arose in September. I was being billed for $420.00 for Personal Trainer sessions. My account was overdrawn with my bank, along with a service charge fee. I had tried to contact Mark regarding this. However, I got told that he was out to lunch, he was with someone and can they take a message, to he's not working that day, or he's gone home for the day. I ended up sending an email and a certified letter to Retro Fitness about this billing mishap. Mark called me on September 14, 2015. I told Mark about my account being billed mistakenly, and that I had put in a dispute with my bank. I told Mark that I didn't want to contract for any additional personal trainer services, and wanted to just use up the existing services that I had paid for ($420 for 36 sessions). Mark confirmed at that time, I had 21 sessions left, and we ended the call amicably.
When I was approached by Personal Trainer John, I told him that I worked things out with Mark. John came back to the treadmill that I was on and we set up an appointment to continue with the Personal Trainer sessions. I got one session in. I had to cancel another because I got stuck working late at my job. However, the following Monday was when I learned from John that there was a problem, and I needed to speak with Mark.
When I got in contact with Mark that's when I learned that he was holding me to terms of an agreement that I never agreed to. Mark was telling me that I signed up for a binding three months contract and agreed to pay them $1,260 for the 36 sessions. I told Mark that I never agreed that, and he never even mentioned anything of the sort when we spoke on September 14, 2015. Mark emphasized that he has a signed contract by me, and that he could send me a copy of the contract. However, I told Mark that he did on a computer, which he could probably manipulate the terms to be whatever he wanted after he had me sign the electronic pad. The phone call got contentious, and there was no resolution that was going to be achieved that day.
So I tried to take the issue to Retro Fitness Corporate office, and spoke and exchanged emails with a John-Michael **. However, he has no power over the Retro Fitness franchises. Via an email response via from Mr. ** I received the owners (even though the owner never spoke to me). Presently they doubled the amount and are sending my matter to collections. They aren't interested in the truth. However, maybe you will be. At the time that I was signing up I told Mark that I couldn't afford his services, for I wasn't sure that I had enough credit limit available to cover that expense. Mark put the charge through, aware of that fact.
I will be filing a complaint with the BBB. Eventually this matter will have to be litigated in court. Even their stance to hold me to the contract is untrue because they failed to bill according to said contract. My warning to all that read this complaint, be careful when you contract for personal trainer services. Never walk away without a copy of your contract. Read the contract and the terms on back of the contract. For Mark will not go over all the terms with you. Ex. the $250 cancellation fee.

I joined Retro Fitness in Edison, NJ October 2012, and have been a faithful member until I received a personal email from the owner of this franchise Mitchell Kurtzer. The content of his email was revolved around water usage, yes "water"!! This owner does not allow you to refill your water bottles after your run out, but instead wants you to refill a small cup if and when you become thirsty. What does my membership cover???
I received an email stating that I should never refill my water bottle and when my reply I replied stating that I felt insulted, his response was, "It's policy." Where in the membership policy I signed states this??? To add insult to injury he shares my email with the staff and existing members. When I found this out I cancelled my membership on a Sunday at 9:30 with one of his managers. He sends me an email 30 minutes stating effective immediately my membership is cancelled without giving me the 30 days to locate to another gym. Additionally he picks and chooses who he sends promotional coupons.

DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM!!! If I could give them ZERO stars, I would. JOHN, the "manager" is the worst manager I've ever dealt with in my entire life. CATHERINE, the general manager, should really think about who she's hired and consider getting rid of him as soon as possible. Seriously. After trying to cancel my membership for 4 months, I can say that this is the worst gym that I've ever dealt with in my entire life.
June 22- Next, I emailed brooklynny@retrofitness...asking to cancel it since my letter was "lost." They responded with "I would suggest you did not send another. What I can do is have you reply to this email just stating full names and reason for cancelling and we can use this as your written request as an exception. Please note there is a 60 day notice." Obviously, I responded with the relevant information with no response.
July 2nd at 4:04 PM - I called the gym directly on 347-943-5579 to get this sorted. I was advised that I had to send a letter once more, but this time it had to be certified. I was also advised that I would not have to pay for the month of August. Cool. That next morning I sent in a certified letter for both my fiancé and myself asking to cancel the memberships and included all necessary information. I also mentioned in the letter that I didn't expect to pay for the month of August as I was advised on the phone.
July 5th at 8:28 PM - My fiancé and myself both received calls from Retro (347-636-5596) confirming that they were cancelling our accounts. Brilliant. Because of this phone call, I did not see a reason to keep my certified mail receipt because the cancellation had been confirmed. (What was I thinking actually trusting these people?)
September 3 - I was emailed from ABC Financial Services saying that I had a late payment and additional service fees from the month of August. WHAT?! My card information was just changed which is why they didn't just automatically remove the funds and thank god for that because who knows how long this would have continued.
September 4 - I called Retro and spoke to JOHN who was the least helpful "manager" I've ever come across. Let me tell you why... When I first tried to explain the situation to him, he immediately rode it off and told me to send the certified letter again because there was nothing that he could do to prove that I already sent it in. Obviously that is NOT what I was wanting to hear after going back and forth with this company so much. Therefore, it pissed me off and with good reason. After prying it out of him, he said he would "look for it" and get back to me within 4 days.
I proceeded to ask what had to be done to "look for it" and he said because he "has to look for it." (Does it seriously take 4 days to look in a filing cabinet?) Frankly, I was not going to wait 4 days to NOT be called back and he didn't care whatsoever. After going back and forth and stating that I've already spoken to this company way too many times and it's never been resolved his response was "You haven't talked to me." By then, his smart ass tone had definitely pissed me off. In the midst of my rant, I try to tell him that I was advised via email that it would be confirmed and then it wasn't. He proceeded to respond with "You haven't emailed me." (!!!) I said, "Is your email brooklynny@retrofitness.?" He replied with, "No, that's just a general email address." "So then you're telling me that they were lying and they couldn't do this?" "No." (WTF?)
After some back and forth of very unkind words, he proceeded to get my information to tell me that my contract had been cancelled and I only needed to pay for my last month and all would be sorted. Cool. "Can I make sure that my fiancé's has also been cancelled?" "No. You're not him." – Awesome. Thanks for not helping. Last, I email ABC Financial to pay the fee and the VERY kind lady was able to help me and also advised whether my fiancé's account had also been cancelled. TAKE A WILD GUESS. Nope, not at all. Therefore, after sending in a certified letter and being called confirming the cancellation, my fiancé's was never cancelled. Therefore, the saga continues.
So, apparently the only way to cancel a membership with this company is to do the following: Send the certified letter. (Easy) Only communicate via email because you never have proof of what they tell you via phone. Only email JOHN, the "manager" because everyone else is just "general email addresses" who can't help you. (If you can speak to Catherine, do. I'm sure she'll be anything better than that unhelpful smart ass.) Don't trust that they've cancelled the membership when they say they have. Don't expect it to be cancelled really... ever. I really hope JOHN learns good customer service sometime soon. He needs help.

They asked if we thought we may continue with the PT after the 6 months and I said no! The person that signed us up must have took the paperwork after we were through and checked the auto renewal box and now they are taking $150 a month out of my account each month on top of two monthly membership fees! I told them I want my money back and they said they can't refund my money when I haven't even finished with my first 6 months of PT yet! I ran into financial difficulties and could no longer afford my gym membership, I was sent a bill in the mail for $200 and was told this is my remaining balance. When walking into the gym I was told it would only cost me $19.99 monthly and that's all, with no contracts to sign or commitments like other area gyms I was also considering to join. The rep then told me to sit at a computer to enter my personal information. After doing that and entering my debit card information, I was then being charged $21 and change monthly for my membership and I was very happy with that.
Running into trouble and having to hire a lawyer, I could not afford the monthly membership anymore and I was told by the gym I needed to contact the financial company ABC who handles the financial side of my gym agreement. If I was clearly told and not in small print that I would be locked in for a 12-month period I never would have signed up. I feel it's misleading when gyms place signage all around town letting everyone know it will always cost you $19.99 monthly with no contract... Please read every word before electronically signing, because gyms will never tell you that until after you sign up. :-(

I joined Retro for more than a year and things happen. I moved to another state in May where gym is kind of far from me. I strongly believed there is no contract and cancel anytime. In May I was told to send them 60 days notice. I needed to travel all the way from my new place to them (because other Retro fitness have no access to my profile) to bring official letter. Then, they told me that it is not acceptable, that I should mail them only certified letter and not to the main office, to the local one. Back and forth it took another month. Ok, they received it on June 18. Ok, it's fine. I made 2 more months payments (because it takes "60 days to cancel!" Reallyyy??). But when I was told that cancellation will not be done until I pay in August for the next year maintenance, it is unacceptable.

I had signed a one year lease. Instead of the membership automatically canceling, they have a policy where you will have to send in a certified letter 90 days before. Or else the membership keeps going and you will be billed for the rest of your life if you don't send in a certified mail. This gym is a good gym. But I somehow believe this law was written to scam people. If I have signed one year lease it should be a one year lease. It shouldn't be more than that. This is a disgusting rule that a gym can put on the books. It's amazing. If you have options please join other gyms. It took me almost an additional 6 months to cancel my membership. My daughter went with a friend’s brother under 17 years old back in January 2015 to check the gym out. The sales person that signed them up advised my daughter that I needed to come. I come in with a blank check and sign a minor waiver. I went in. I asked the sales person the information. He specially said to me “This is the deal. No membership fee for signing up that day ("This is the last day"). No money down. $19.99 starts Feb. for the next 12 months.” What about if I want to cancel - He said "just notify us 30 days prior and you will no longer be auto deducted and you’re done. No charges." I said great. I asked for a copy and he said it was all in the computer. Well of course I never saw it. Never received one nor received an email of one.
Now I call about a month ago trying to cancel the membership that my daughter does not use and I am told we either come in or send a certified receipt letter and we’ll be called to cancel auto renewal. I said "auto renewal I want to cancel the membership." Manager says “No you can't.” I can transfer the membership, put it on hold or cancel auto renewal and continue to pay the next 8 months $19.99. Ok well here we go so now I am paying the $19.99 (which I was told the opposite at sign up) and I send a certified receipt but never get a call. I call again and they say they never received it and I said I have a scribbled received but can't make out the name. So now not only they state they do not have my letter that I paid for, my daughter had to make an extra trip to them this morning to sign a form to cancel auto renewal for March 2016 that I am paying for.
I happen to go check out my acct. And there is a $50 charge from Retro Fitness. I call Retro Fitness and I get that is a standard annual fee that all customers get. I lost it after I was told there was no annual fee and with the conversation I had with the manager on canceling. Not once did she mention this fee and refused to remove it. She said I received an email. I never received an email. She corrected the email. I am still sitting here waiting for the new email. Now 2 hours has gone by still have not received an email with anything from Retro fitness. Meanwhile as I am saying to her that is not what we are told she says “I have to cover my sales people. Sorry.” I said to her, “You would do anything for a sale.” Then she says "you can transfer the membership" which is funny she remembers that several times before but never mentioned that would be another $40.00.
I have called and left a message for Retro Fitness Customer Service. I expect a call back on Monday. What Retro Fitness in New City has done is inconceivable and all I get is “You were there.” No I was not. I came in with a blank check and I asked what the deal was and she is telling me I am Wrong. Well guess they get you because you cannot read the contract because it is on the computer and they say you will see it via email and guess you DON'T. These kids that they have selling to the under 17 years of age will do and say anything is WRONG. They may not give me my money back but maybe this will help someone else from These CROOKS.

All these trainers missed other sessions aside from these 5 consecutive sessions due to multiple reasons (due to their alarm not going off, forgetting our scheduled session, illness, doctor's appointments).
End of May 2014, Anthony said he had spoken to ownership and I was getting 5 free sessions due to the inconvenience and poor service of the multiple missed sessions and that my contract would be switched to 6 months from 12 months. He never informed me I had to sign a new contract (this is something Adam-new personal training manager that took over from Anthony- told me should have been done by Anthony).
In late November my new trainer Lyle went on extended leave without notice (he texted me to cancel our session the day after Thanksgiving). I was not contacted by the gym and despite texting Lyle and calling the gym's general number. No one told me he was gone and I needed to schedule with a new trainer. For a week I called and was told "Lyle is out, we don't know when he will be back." I came into the gym to speak to Adam around December 8th (about a week and a half after my last canceled session) and was informed Lyle was gone and assigned me to Jahnel again. I did not want to return to Jahnel given our past experience. I spoke to Jahnel about not wanting a repeat of the lack of communication and missed sessions, he assured me that would never happen again.
Jahnel went on to miss another three sessions within the month of December. After complaining again I was switched to Ray, a new trainer that has kept his scheduled appointments to date. This makes five personal trainer switches in 9 months. None of the trainers (before Ray) kept notes, so each time I switch my trainers have no idea what I was working on, what strength level I have achieved, etc.
I complained to Adam in early December about the poor service and I had checked online for the first time and seen I was still being charged for sessions (October 28 and November 28). Adam informed me then that the contract had not been changed by Anthony. At that time I also had 35 sessions banked. (I currently have 40 banked sessions). The majority of the banked sessions are due to personal trainers not keeping their scheduled appointments with me. I did not scheduled 2 sessions due to illness, and 6 due to vacation days.
At most 10-12 of these sessions are due to my schedule, with approximately 30 being due to personal trainer schedules or poor customer service-not keeping the scheduled appointment. Adam has implied I am lying about this, despite being shown texts from Anthony and my personal trainers canceling my sessions. He has shaken his head as I told him about these many absences and claimed if this were true he would have known about it. This I have found offensive.
I was also informed by Adam that ownership did not recall this situation and would not honor what I was told by Anthony, the Retro Fitness PT manager at that time. Adam said he would speak to ownership and advocate. After weeks of not hearing back I contested the personal training charges with American Express. I was told Adam had spoken with ownership about this and although I requested ownership contact information to discuss this situation I was denied it.
I do not trust that ownership was made aware of this situation. They are claiming ownership was not made aware of this by Anthony despite Anthony assuring me of the contrary. They have not apologized for the poor service they have provided. They have assured me that any session not used is banked. This is a great business model for them as it keeps me in the gym longer than my year membership. They refuse to reimbursed all the missed sessions by their personal trainers.

My boyfriend has been trying to cancel his gym membership for longer than I care to recall. There is nothing you can do over the phone, except leave a message for someone to call you back. When they do, they tell you that you have to: Put your request in writing; Send the letter to them via certified mail; and Pay 2 months membership fee as a penalty. With that, we thought we would skip a step and go to the gym with the signed letter requesting to cancel. Would you believe that the manager refused to accept it??? It must be sent via certified mail...(Did I mention his contract was up 2 years ago?...)
This of course is a ploy to get you to pay for 1 additional month. If the letter is received anytime after the 1st of the month (regardless of your original contract date), they charge you for the current month on top of your 2-month penalty. This company should be ashamed of themselves. They can't drum up enough new business in an honest and respectable fashion; Instead, they resort to sleazy, underhanded tactics and steal from their existing members who have been loyal to them for years. My advice...find another gym...

I walked into Retro Fitness in Neptune NJ with my sister-in-law. A girl at the counter told me that she would help me with a 7-day trial period with no membership needed, that she would need two forms of ID and to pay for the trial. I paid for the trial on the account that the attendant behind the counter stated that Retro would not take money out of my account without my consent.
After some time I saw that Retro took money out of my account. I then called the manager, Clifton and stated that I lost my job and I am going through a divorce and I have not got the funds for something like a membership and I would not want any fees! Why would I buy a membership? The manager of Retro, Clifton from Neptune, NJ stated that he would help me out and put my account on freeze for 4-6 months then soon after cancel it, that would be the only way to do so.
Soon after the four months I saw another deduction taken out of my account from Retro Fitness, Neptune NJ without my consent. I then called corporate in Colts Neck, NJ and asked them to help me with this situation. Corporate then said that I would only be able to cancel this whole situation by speaking to the manager, Clifton at the Neptune, NJ branch. So the manager, Clifton from the Neptune, NJ branch called me and let me know that he is trying to help me but the only way that he could cancel it is if corporate does it.
I am getting the runaround and lied to as well as scammed!!! I do not have the funds to pay for anything and want this settled! I am going through too much hardship right now with my family breaking and the last thing I want is to make things worse by owing money I do not have! Cancel my trial. I did not ask for a membership, I was tricked and scammed. This is illegal! I will never go to that gym ever again. Never.

After not using the gym for many months, I visited their Commack facility on May 5th 2014 to cancel. I was leaving for Europe for 6 weeks and decide to cancel my membership after being a member for about a three years. I was told that here would be a two month penalty according to their agreement which agreed to and that they will bill me for an additional two month. I walked away and was never asked to sign or do anything more. After I returned from EU I noticed that they were still taking money from my account. I then visited the Dear Park facility and asked why I was still getting charged and was told that I would have to discuss this with the Commack facility since all my records were supposedly there.
On Nov 29th I visited the Commack branch and after having a heated debate with the clerk behind their front counter, she called the store manager and put her (Lisa?) on the phone. She told me that there was not record of the fact that I formally cancelled and was told that I had never signed a cancellation Agreements. I explained to her that I have not been using the gym (which their records validated this fact) and had decided to cancel during my May 5th 2014 visit. I was never asked to sign anything and not knowing their procedure. It was up to them to let me know as they did on Nov 29th 2014, to have me sign their formal cancellation notice, which they provide.
I did so and noted on the bottom the notice that I signed "under protest." Lisa said she would call my cell on Monday of her decision on the matter. I left my cell # with the person I had been speaking with. After waiting days the call from Lisa who was ill mannered and combative on the phone on Nov 29th never came. I took it upon my self to then authorize my Citi bank contact, with whom I have had a 30+ year account relationship to halt all payments to Retro Fitness immediately.
I visited their facility today (Jan 9th, 2015) to speak to Lisa but was told she was not in. I explained to the front desk person (a female) why I was there, what had happen and to have Lisa call me. I left her my cell # again for Lisa and also told this clerk that I was going to write to the corp head quarters to submit, a formal complaint against the way people handle customer complaints and of Lisa's combative phone tactics. I would never ever consider joining this gym.

I originally signed up at a brand new Retro Fitness in Forked River, NJ. I signed up so I could get free classes for a year, it was a promotion. The building was still not ready but they had a little office set up. I just moved back to NJ from OR where I didn't have such problems as I do in NJ (NJ is a joke, don't live there if you don't have to). Anyway, I had to transfer my membership to Toms River on rt 37. I never took any classes at the Lacey Retro because they were not open yet, but I had a situation where I had to move kinda fast. So, Toms River and Lacey tell me in order to transfer my membership I have to check in 13 days out of the month. I checked it day after day after day after day and I would ask occasionally, "Did my membership change over?" "Not yet, not yet, not yet."
Finally I asked them to see what was going on. They called the Lacey Retro and they said that I scanned in 35 times!!! Why didn't Toms River know this? So they change my membership FINALLY and then I want to take a class, they tell me I have to pay $5.00 a class or pay an extra $15.00 a month. They WOULD NOT honor the promotion that I got from Lacey. I decided to stop going, let the year run out, in the meanwhile I was charged $50.00 for a yearly fee. I call and complain, they say that was from Lacey. They WON'T honor Lacey's promotion but they WILL honor the $50.00 annual fee. Toms River's annual fee is $20.00. I asked, "How do I cancel my membership?" "You have to send us a certified letter to stop your membership, but do a couple of days before the next time you have to pay your monthly payment." I went and spend $6.97 to sent my letter certified.
Now today, I go check my bank statement. They charged me a $20.00 fee to cancel!! I have one more $20.00 payment to them and I will NEVER RECOMMEND this place to anyone EVER!!! I just wanted to take some classes. I was NEVER given such a run around in my life. THIS PLACE DOES NOT CARE ONE BIT ABOUT THEIR CLIENTS. ALL THEY WANT IS MONEY!!! OH YEAH, THIS IS A BIG KICKER. Come to find out Lacey never gave me the promotion. I went and purposely signed up for the promotion. STAY AWAY FROM RETRO FITNESS!!!

I cancelled my son's account on May 13, 2014. They told me I need to pay for the next two months so I transferred his account to my name. At the end of July, I should have been done. So I thought, and on August 1, 2014 they charge me $29.00 for an annual fee and I call and the response I got was that everyone gets charged. Well that's fine if everyone did not cancel. She told me I need to call the billing company and discuss it with them. I informed her that's not my job and I don't get paid to do her job. I left a message for a manager to call back, but because it was a weekend, apparently they have no managers on until Monday. I waited and did not receive a call back.
I called Tuesday and spoke to the manager Amanda who informed me that she would take care of it. It then was brought to my attention that on August 4, 2014 the day before I spoke to her, I was charged 19.99 for a monthly payment. I call back on Wednesday August 6, 2014 and spoke with Christina who assured me that the refund went through for the $29.00. I asked her why Amanda did not refund the 19.99 as I am sure she was aware of it at the same time and she had no answer. I told her what they were doing was illegal since they had a cancellation in May and that my contract was up and they had no right to continue charging me.
In retrospect, if we break contract they can take legal recourse and if we cancel and they continue to bill that's a breach of contract as well. She assured me the 19.99 would be refunded. Oh it was refunded but for $19.50. Seriously?! Do they need the money so bad that they cannot refund what they owe? However, I am still waiting for the $29.00 to be refunded. I called again today and once again there were no managers around. This place needs to be investigated and closed down.

The General Manager has the worst attitude, which I found out wasn't unique to me. I asked some of the other members and they all had the same experience.
As for the personal training, I've seen like five different managers. The PT staff is ok. The only one I see working all the time is this young black guy with a lot of tattoos, and he seems good, but he's always booked with clients every time I try to engage him. For the price of the gym membership it's worth it. I specify 'gym' because they will try to convince you to sign up for personal training once you become a member and when you ask questions such as "Is this a monthly cost or am I only paying for eight sessions to try out the trainer without any obligation" and the manager says, "that's right you're only signing up for eight sessions and you're not bound to a contract." We just want you to sign this pad that allows us to use the same credit card on file. BEWARE! They lie to get you to sign a pad that doesn't state anything of the sort and when you find out after the fact, the eight sessions you initially thought you signed up for is really a down payment for a twelve month contract totaling $1,755.60. I asked for a refund and they pass it off to the next guy on duty. They still have not resolved the issue and it's been over two months now. Very disappointed.

I met with the fitness manager Tyrees to inquire about personal training sessions. At that time I was interested in obtaining personal training sessions for a month or two to kick start my plan to lose weight and get in shape. The fitness manager, Tyrees, spent about 40 minutes convincing me that if I sign up for a year program and pay the full amount of money cash in advance I will have a full comprehensive program. The full comprehensive program according to Tyrees will include: 1) a monthly progress evaluation with him personally 2) bimonthly body measurements 3) Diet evaluation and advice by my personal trainer 4) a monthly meeting with certified dietitian 5) a customized workout adjusted to my progress and ability.
Now, a year has passed by, this has happened so far: 1) I have not had a single evaluation by neither Tyrees nor the subsequent 3 managers that followed him over the year. 2) Two months passed by and no body measurements were taken. Upon my request, I had my first measurements done. Within the last 11 months, my measurements were taken total of 4 times and those were upon my constant request. 3) None of my personal trainers had any training or ability to deliver any dietary advice, nor did they try to do so. 4) There was not any meeting or any contact with any dietitian. I requested to meet a dietitian multiple times, and I got multiple different answers. The most common one was that the branch is going through difficult times and they couldn't bring a dietitian on board at that time. 5) I did have my personal training sessions, but instead of having a customized session, the gym kept changing my trainers without my permission. I had Scott, Zena, Yosh, Erika and now I have Bubba as my trainers. Needless to say, with every new trainer, he/she had to restart my sessions progress from scratch.
I tried to complain multiple times to the on site manager as well as the central national office. I kept getting various responses ranging from reassurance to blaming me for misunderstanding Tyrees to begin with. They claimed that they will deliver whatever is written on the contract only. Every member at the Retrofitness gym has a file that contains his/her measurements and progress. As I mentioned, my measurements were taken only 4 times within the last year. (Today is Saturday) I never received a phone call, email or Letter notifying me that they will automatic continue my contract and continue to charge my account. I called my bank and I am disputing the charges from them. This contract is Misleading and a Contract Of Entrapment. I will be sending out the certified letter. I hope this will resolve this issue as I have been reading all other complaints here. I will never sign up with them.

That was in August, and I still get a charge on my credit card. I think we need to get a class action lawsuit against them because there are way too many people in this boat.

I have been dealing with trying to cancel my membership since 9/21/13 but the owner never cancelled the membership. Worst yet, she never returned my phone calls until mid December. I went in person to resolve this issue, the owner Christina told me I still owed money. I asked her to explain why it took her three months to return my 5 phone calls. "You should have read your contract," it sounded like speaking to a robot. She is not listening, I have never heard of a ridiculous policy like this. I always paid my dues a month ahead, and she purposely didn't cancel the membership to squeeze more money out of me.
I put a stop through my bank and she didn't even return their phone calls either. Very dishonest owner, she is a bully and stealing from innocent customer like myself. Now I am in collections in the amount of $200..... I am so mad!! I have called the corporate customer service repeatedly but again no response from anyone. A business should not be allowed to operate illegally and extorting money from innocent citizen. I hope someone catches up to this nasty owner and shuts this place down for theft!!!!

I have been trying to cancel my membership with Retro Fitness in Middletown since September 2013. A friend of mine is a personal trainer and had given me a workout to do. I had asked one of the guys where a certain machine was. He was at the counter reading a newspaper as if he couldn't be bothered. Upon seeing my notebook with my workout, he began to drill me about where I got my workout, who my friend was, where she trained, he was so rude. I tried to cancel my membership and was told you had to cancel in Manahawkin because my membership had been transferred there. The Middletown manager tried to say I was close to $300 behind on payments.
I had to call ABC Financial and bring in my bank statement as proof that I was NOT $300 behind on a membership. I went to cancel my membership in Manahawkin and was told I could not cancel because I had to complete my contract which is up in May and I had to give 60-day notice and I have to pay for May and June of 2014. This is nonsense. I hate this gym. I was told I need a certified letter or a doctor's note. I'm a healthy 28 year old female, a doctor isn't going to give me a disability note. I want OUT of this contract. I WANT OUT of this HORRIBLE gym that I haven't even set foot in since December of 2013. I'm contacting the Better Business Bureau because I'm getting nowhere with Retro or ABC Financial.

Retro let me sign up at the gym but when I asked about canceling my membership I was referred to a phone number. At this number I was on hold over 30 mins and had to drop off to get back to work on two occasions. When I finally got through to someone they of course had to transfer me to a specialist whose only specialties seemed to be refusing to acknowledge my request, dragging the conversation on as long as possible, and trying to talk me into not canceling. In the end a change of my CC number was the only thing that stopped the charges. Retro Fitness is a terrible company to deal with. Join at your own risk.

Please beware of Retro Fitness Astoria. If you JOIN, please be prepared to JOIN FOR LIFE. They will make quitting more of a workout than you ever had at the GYM. I joined August 2012 and after ONE year decided that I'd cancel the membership. In September 2013, I went ONLINE and submitted the cancellation as instructed. I received an email indicating that a member of the Retro Staff would contact me. I assumed they'd call to try and discourage me from quitting. I never received that call, but in good faith I assumed my membership had been cancelled. Another month, another charge.
I went to the gym and requested, I was instructed I could accomplish ON LINE. I went back online and tried again without success. I called the gym and was instructed I MUST come to the gym and fill out paperwork. I went to the gym on Saturday, December 7th. It's NOW December 11 and I still have an account with Retro. I just called and still NO MANAGER available to speak on the phone. How crazy is this? Look at the Cancellation Form, they insisted I come to the GYM for... On 11/13/2013 I was trained by Kyle at the Brick NJ location as part of the "FREE" fitness evaluation. At that time I agreed to sign up for weekly training. 2 days later I was contacted by a trainer at the facility who informed me he did not work on Saturdays. The following day Kyle said he would have someone that did work on weekends call me. On November 16th I received a text message from "Robb" to set up a training session. He informed me that day he would get back to me "early the following week" to set up the appointment. He did not reach out to me "early the next week."
In the interim I was extremely sore from the workout by Kyle. I assumed this was normal soreness however when I was still in a lot of pain on 11/22/2013 I went to a doctor. I was told I had torn ligaments in my elbow which was most likely due to the fact that your trainer did no stretching of any kind either before or after the workout.
On 11/21/2013 I called the brick location and explained to them that not only was I injured by their trainer but I also still had not gotten an appointment for training and I wanted to cancel my training agreement. I left 5 messages at the brick location that day and received no calls back. The last time I called I got the number for the corporate office and called them. I was told that day that someone from operations would be in touch and I would get a call back within 24 hours. I never received a call. I called again on 11/22/2013 and left more messages at the corporate office and again no return call.
I called on 11/25/20113 and 11/26/2013 and still received no calls back. On my last call to the corporate office I spoke with KT and she assured me that she would handle it and have someone call me back. She emailed me that day to tell me she had reached out to the locations owner who assured her she would call me on 11/27/2013. She never called. You can see from the emails between myself and KT that I was given a slew of excuses as to why I had not been called back.
Today I received an email from Jen ** (attached) again telling me that the owner would reach out to me. She did not. I called the brick location and after being on hold for approximately 10 minutes I was again told the Owner would call me back. She did in fact call me back and her response to me was absolutely mind boggling. First, she told me that she had been told 15 different stories about what happened and that she was assured by her staff that I was called back (it can be proven by phone records that NO ONE from that location EVER called me). She then told me I was lying and that there was no way she was going to cancel my training agreement unless I could provide her with written proof that I am permanently damaged and unable to exercise. She went on to tell me that not only was she going to not refund my money, that she would in fact keep charging me for services she is not providing. She was rude, nasty and just all around ugly. I am in complete shock about how this is being handled and how the corporate offices allow their members to be treated whether the gyms are independently owned or not.
I have contacted the better business bureau (according to them there are many complaints about your company). I have called the bank and according to them charging me for services you are not providing is in fact illegal and they are opening an investigation to that fact. I will be leaving voicemail messages for each and every officer in the corporate offices including Jason **, Patrick **, Robert **, Matt **, Richard **, Heather ** and whomever else I can get a hold of.
I will not just accept that this behavior is ok. ALL I wanted was to cancel the training as to not injure myself further and I am being treated as if I did something wrong. I absolutely will not just go away because your independent Owner has a problem with me and clearly with her staff who are telling her things that are not true.

She told us that was it. I continued getting emails from them the days following so I called to make sure it was cancelled and was told "My sister and I run it. It was taken care of."
I even responded to one of the emails stating we quit, I don't know why I'm still getting these emails. When I left the treadmill still had no sign). Gym set up is tight and leaves no room to breathe. All the equipment is on top of the next. The bathroom was FILTHY. I could not find towelettes to wipe the equipment down (no one in the gym had the courtesy of wiping the equipment off after use I noticed). The weights were ALL over the floor and there were no handles on the machines to use the machines (I looked for 15 minutes for a handle, went to the desk to ask and was told they were "around" or being used. Not enough handles for the equipment they have?).
This is just the tip of the iceberg. The air conditioning was "broken" (one member who was working out next to me at one point told me that they NEVER turn the air on). Miserable gym. Stay away. I joined Retro Fitness in Jersey City, Hudson Mall location on May 30th, 2013. I spoke with Mike, the manager, and asked questions. There was an error in my application and I had to go to the front desk to have someone check it out. The young lady asked if I meant to check off that I have High Blood Pressure and I told her yes. She said okay and put the application through. Again I asked Mike if there was anything else I needed to know; his answer was nope, I had answered everything. I said to him, "When can I start exercising?" He said to me, "Now. You are officially a member of the gym."
The next week, I went to exercise and swipe my card and the girl at the front desk (VERY RUDE) asked me while taking care of another guest if this was my first time here, and I said, "Yes. Why? Did the swipe not go through?" She said yes and said across the counter loud enough for everyone around to turn and look at me, "It says that you have High Blood Pressure and you can't exercise here until you go the doctor and get a letter stating that it's alright for you to exercise." I told her that I just joined last week and was not told that.
Then she again loudly said to me that I could fill out a consent form. I asked for one and as I was filling it out, I became angry and then asked to speak with a manager. Well, Mike was not there but his assistant Kevin was and I explained everything to him telling him that I no longer wanted the membership and I would like to be refunded. He was totally no help and told me that Mike would call me by 12 noon the next (I also left the consent form with Kevin). Well, I guess the next has not come yet because I am still waiting for a call from Mike and that was on 6/4/13.
I went away and came back and decided that since I filled out the consent form, I would just go on and start exercising. So on 6/17/13, I went to the gym with my friend and swiped my card and was asked to wait a minute. He then asked me if I had resolved both of my problems here at the gym. My question to him was, "What 2 problems? I only had one and I had given you my consent form." He told me that my account was flagged stating that I am not allowed to do any Heavy Lifting or heavy exercising and he wanted to know if I had resolved that problem... I asked him, "When and where did that come from because it was not flagged the first time that I came to the gym?" And again, he could not tell me who did it.
Again I requested to speak with the Manager because Kevin, the Assistant, does not seem to know anything or how to handle anything. To make matters worse, Kevin then turned to my friend and showed her on the computer what is flagged in my account about my medical history. Is that breaking some kind of HIPPA Law or something????
This morning, I called to speak with Mike. He was not in and no one including Kevin could tell when or if he was expected in. I asked for him to return my call. Hopefully he will return it sometime today. I was told that as soon as he gets in, they will have him return my call. I no longer want the membership. I am looking for it to be cancelled, a refund of the joining fee of $84.00 and no monthly fees to be paid - a TOTAL CANCELLATION!!!! I feel totally humiliated, discouraged and BULLIED BY RETRO FITNESS.

I had been a member of Retro Fitness for a little over a year. I was happy with the facility. However, I moved out of state in early Sept. of 2012. I had spoken with the owner beforehand and he told me that I would have to send some info for proof of residence and they would cancel my membership. Okay, fine. I could get much info quickly enough. I called the facility and asked what proof would be sufficient enough. I did not have my license yet; I did have my water/sewer bill. That was okay. I faxed it and my machine said "transmitted" which means it was received.
It is now May 2013 and I wish I checked my statements better. This facility was still automatically taking the monthly fee out of my account which is now at approx. $120 give or take. I called them today, 5/3/2013, and spoke with the so-called manager b/c the owners never seem to be present, which is a crock b/c they are "there". I know who they are and when I used to work out there, 1 of them was usually around.
Anyhow, Amy stated that they never received my info to begin with. So then I told her, "I'm sending you a fax pronto and expect a cancellation immediately." I also added that I expect a reimbursement from all these months "being as" I was no longer living in the area to attend the facility. She claimed that would have to reviewed and discussed. Really?!
I guess it's okay to take someone's money all that time and discuss whether or not that person deserves their hard-earned money - if that fits the bill of poor customer service - and I don't receive my back money, I will rip this place to shreds to Consumer Affairs, BBC and as much as I can put a place down. I hope these owners are smart enough to do the right thing. This situation was handled very unprofessionally and I have read complaints about the same thing in other facilities as well. I thought this was a great place. Now I can clearly see that it is not!
I feel like I still got nowhere... although I did call to confirm they received this fax and they did. So we shall see. I'm not expecting anything and they were not convincing to me either from the way they handled my phone call which I know was the owner and he said his name was Johnny... yea right...

Billing Dispute - I signed up for a one-year membership at Retro Fitness in Dix Hills/Huntington NY area, that was to continue each month after that year was up and would cost me $20, being charged to my credit card. First off I hardly used the membership because of a back injury. I had a 3 level lumbar fusion surgery done in November of 2010. I was cut open from an inch over my belly button, all the way down to the crotch line. My insides were taken out. They then took out 3 discs replacing them with spacers, 3 cages, with 9 screws to hold it all in place. They then put me back together, flipped me over and sliced me 3 times in my back, while inserting a Titanium rod and 2 more screws to hold that in place.
I was told walking was the best thing after surgery to keep limber and not have my back stiffen up. So in March 2011, I was cleared for therapy and I went back to the gym and tried using the treadmill. The treadmill wound up being too bouncy for my back and I hurt myself on it the last time I was at Retro Fitness. I have not been back since. Since I had decided that I no longer had any use for the treadmill, I figured I had now no use for the gym any longer. So I limped to the desk on the way out and told the girl behind the counter that I wanted to close my account. She stated that I had to sign and get a receipt but she was too busy and the manager was also busy and I needed to wait.
I explained to her that I was in too much pain to wait and I would leave my keychain tag on the counter for her and asked if she could take care of it when she was done and to mail me the receipt. She told me okay and took the tag. She told me she would talk to the manager and it would be taken care of. With all that was going on with my recovery, I never noticed if I got a receipt in the mail. Now knowing the circumstances of what is going on now, I see I never got one and that is because no one ever cancelled my membership nor contacted me about this matter. During the holiday period I received a phone call from a credit agency telling me that I was negligent on my payments to the gym and that they filed a collection notice against me.
I explained to the person on the phone what had happened and that I was not responsible for that balance. I then, yesterday, was online checking my credit score and there is a red X against my report bringing down my credit score. I called about it and discussed this with a manager in this collection agency and she told me to have the owner or manager of the gym call them and they can straighten it out if the gym will squash the bill. I called the gym and first was given a number to call and when I did, it was the collection agency again. So I called the gym back and left several messages for the owner because the manager, after explaining my situation to her, told me I had to speak with the owner. He did not call back.
So I went to the gym to talk to him in person and I was given excuses why he could not talk to me. He still did not call back. Today I called the gym back because I still did not receive a call back. I once again got an excuse that the owner could not be reached. So I explained that I felt like I was getting the runaround and I left my name and number once again. Finally an hour later, the owner called. Still up to now, no one would give me his name. When he called, he had a very arrogant tone and as I tried to explain my situation, he kept interrupting and shutting me up. He then told me that I have to pay the collection agency and that he would squash the outstanding bill with the gym itself.
Well first, it is either if it went to collections then it went to collections. If it went to collections then there can't be an outstanding bill with the gym itself. When I tried to explain what the collections agency told me, he shut me up again and told me I had no idea how it works. He then stated that he could not just call the collections and have it squashed. I told him that they told me it could be. Then he changed his words and said that well if he did, they would charge him to do it. Well which is it? Can it be done or can't it? I explained to him that I am on disability. I walk in pain, move in pain, sit still in pain. I can not work nor use a gym. I can not afford the extra $20 a month on this limited income. This is why I cancelled when I did. If I was not going to be able to make use of the gym, I was not going to pay for it any longer.
He then told me to stop being a degenerate and man up to my debts. He then told me that I had to stop being a baby and pay my ** bills, and not to call back the establishment, and hung up on me. I called back and the girl that answered told me that he just stepped out and I told her straight out she was full of ** and to put him on the phone. She then handed him the phone and he got nasty with me again. I then asked him who the hell he thought he was and who the hell he thought he was talking to. I then told him he was a bad businessman and called him a couple of choice words. He responded with, “Come down here and say that to my face and see what happens to you!”
I answered back, “Okay, I will and what are you going to do, hit me? So you are threatening a patron with bodily harm? And one that you know just had back surgery? Real smart. When I bring this up to corporate and retain a lawyer, we will see who gets it in the end. I hurt myself on your machine. You are lucky all I did was quit and not sue you.” His response was, “Wanna start ** with me Joe? I don't think you want to do that Joe. You have no idea who you are dealing with. Now pay your bill like a man and stop being a baby. And Joe I have all your information here. You don't want to mess with me man.” Meaning he has my info such as address and so forth. He then hung up on me again.
I called back again to straighten this bill out and all I get is people telling me he is not there and then he finally got on the phone and told me he was going to the police station to file a harassment charge against me. I explained I was not harassing him, I was merely trying to talk to him about a billing problem but he just does not want to discuss this. This is horrible business. I do not need to be threatened by an owner of your franchise. He represents you and you let him get away with this treatment towards patrons? I would assume you won't without some kind of repercussion. I have many friends and family using that establishment.
I told him that I would tell everyone that I know that uses it to cancel and go somewhere else, like Planet Fitness which is cheaper. He did not like that and threatened me again. Wanna take money from my mouth? Well, an eye for an eye. I would like some justice here. I had him on speaker phone with several people witnessing his abusive tone and words. I would like a phone call back please. My name is Joe and my number is **. Oh, and I did file a police report against him for the verbal threats of bodily harm and threats of using my information in retaliation.

My daughter went to work out and take her free training session that came with her membership. Apparently, they sold her a year's training in the amount of $2000.00. At that time she was told that she could cancel anytime, but apparently this is not so. She feels embarrassed that she was taken advantage of. She is a college student with no income. We have tried to explain this to several people, but no one wants to hear anything.

My identity got stolen and I tried to have a civilized conversation with Charlie, the female owner of Retro Fitness, and she immediately began yelling that she doesn't care about my problem and I can simply pay what I owe to get out of the contract. I explained to her that that money was tied up due to fraud, but again, all she did was yell and constantly remind how she doesn't care about my problems and that I am "locked" in a contract and must pay or else she will send the collections after me. I asked twice for the corporate office and she hung up the phone. She hung up. Instead of talking, she resorted to childish behavior.

My 15 year old son went in to get information about the gym. They let him fill out a gym membership and started to take money from his account. Now this is on his credit report. I would like his money to be returned to him and that you remove this off his credit report.

People like the owner/manager Michael Padula are tools. Let me define tool. A tool is an apparatus or a (person) to get something done. To some, the word tool may have a much stronger derogatory meaning, but to me, it's an oversimplified sort of person. My contract with Retro Fitness was terminated because Padula got complaints from his staff and clients. I was not notified that I had such a caustic effect on some of the folks in the space. Padula is a tool, and tools like Padula think very 2 dimensionally. There is no reason why a gym should be run by a tool. I am the gregarious/friendly sort. One very unique trait is I am bluntly honest. Most people cannot handle my level of complete transparency. Padula, members of his staff, and some clients are just too narrow-minded and ignorant to enjoy their surroundings, and the people around them. Live, love, enjoy!

I called the billing company to cancel contract at contract's end in 1 week. I was told I had to go to the health club to fill out "paperwork" to cancel. The health club manager insisted I needed to send a certified letter requesting termination. The contract specifically states written notice need to be provided 60 days prior to "auto renewal" I was told. This is in direct violation of New Jersey code 56:8-42 in regulating health club contracts that states "A health club services contract shall not obligate the buyer to renew the contract."
By violating the laws governing the contract, the said contract becomes null and void according to NJSA 56:8-45 a. states "Any health club service contract entered into in reliance to fraudulent or substantially and willfully false or misleading information, representation, notice or advertisement of the health club is voidable at the option of the buyer of the contract. Any health club services contract which does not comply with the applicable provisions of this act is voidable at the option of the buyer of the contract. b. Any waiver by the buyer of the provisions of this act is void.L.1987, c. 238, s. 7."
I am seeking full refund of the membership dues paid. I paid last year (without signing a new contract) and never used the facility. The contract is one year due to expire on Feb 8th 2010. The only contract I remember having signed was in 2007. I was billed $21.39 for last 12 months. When I told billing company that I wanted to terminate my credit card authorization at end of contract, I was told they had to remove it by law, but that I would be submitted to collections and have marks against my credit rating.

I was offered and signed on for a comprehensive personal training program that included my past, present and future fitness goals, strength and endurance training and a diet program for weight loss. Upon my second visit I was informed that I would not be given a diet plan as they were not dietitians. I had informed the trainer that I had a low back and shoulder injury; however he continuously instructed me to perform exercises and/or lift weights too heavy for my fitness level. I received no endurance program, and when asked was told that I looked like I knew what I was doing.
I spoke with the manager of the gym and requested a refund of my money for the aforementioned reasons, he provided me with the number for corporate headquarters. When I called corporate I was told that they were not going to do anything for me and if I didn't like the training, it was my problem. When I asked the first gentleman his name he refused to give it to me stating "I don't have to tell you who I am." Then next gentleman called himself the director of customer affairs, he was equally as rude and no more helpful, also stating "if you don't want the sessions don't use them."

On November 28, 2007, my 17 year old daughter entered a one year agreement with this gym. She had her monthly amount of 21.39 deducted from her checking account. On September 4, 2008, we sent a letter requesting that her membership be discontinued due to her attendance at college. We sent the letter certified mail, return receipt requested, as required on the contract. However, the letter came back to us stating there is no such address. We double-checked the address on the contract and it was clearly sent to the right address.
My daughter came home from college to hand-deliver the letter to this facility on November 9, 2009. She produced the original letter showing the September 4th date. The clerk at the counter took the letter and stated that the company should honor her 60 day written notice. She also requested that we be contacted if there was any problem, which never happened. The clerk took and kept the original letter with the certified mail label. We assumed payments would cease after the November payment was paid, however, her bank account was again charged on December 2, 2009 which caused an overdraft to her account.
On December 3, 2009, I contacted the gym by phone and was instructed to come into the facility in person to handle this. I left my job in Philadelphia early to do this. During my visit, I explained the situation. The manager then produced my daughter's contract with the hand-written note she came in with, but without the original letter which she also produced to show that we had requested the membership be discontinued within the 60 day requirement. The manager stated that her 60 day notice began from the time she came in on November 9, 2009, not from the date of our letter which was September 4, 2009. He said it was our problem the letter came back and that we should have called once it came back. I explained that my daughter was away at college and that was the reason for the delay. I showed him the address on the letter and asked him if it was the same as the one on the contract. He said it was, but that I'd have to take the issue up with the post office.
I am very disappointed that this company did not handle themselves in a professional manner. They should not have told my teenage daughter that our letter would be honored, when in fact, it wasn't. Now her account is in arrears $53 due to this charge.
