I was a member at a Curves gym near me and was very happy but it closed down. I joined another a bit further away but the closest one to my house. To my disappointment when I went there, I found the owner was a man and although I thought he'd just be there for paperwork, I saw that he would interview and measure new members. I may sound unreasonable but one of the reasons I chose Curves over other gyms is because it's women only and I feel uncomfortable with the man there.

Curves has gone down hill fast, owners only want the money from members and do not care about the members at all. They open and close when it suits them and NOT the members. They close on holidays and do not pro-rate for the days they close. The music stinks and all they can talk about is how badly corporate treats them..Get over it, it's a business.

I have been a member of Curves 3 times at various times in my life and the last time really didn't work for me at all. They say it's only a half an hour a day but it's more than that, with the commuting time and the loss of a lunch hour that many of us full time workers need to run errands. I didn't lose an ounce so it was money wasted. And the music is AWFUL!!! And the workout gets old (and boring) fast. Then I had to resign due to an illness. I could have opted to get a doctor's note but why bother given the fact I had made no progress for months. Save your money and walk instead.

I liked Curves because it was an alternative to a health club. A 77 yr old can exercise with other women and not feel awkward. But when Zumba and Jillian Michaels moved in, I could not find a time to exercise. Also Curves hours change by the minute.

I have been a faithful member of Curves in Delphi, Indiana. I have went at least 4 times a week. The gym owner decided that based on "attendance" that they would reduce not only the available times, but days as well. It is currently only open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The evening hours that I can attend are 4-6 pm. This is a small window of opportunity to attend. I am still being charged the same membership fee, as when there were more available times that I could attend.

I joined the complete program last month and I love the choices they give you for the diet. I feel it does challenge me but satisfies me as well. I really liked the people in the gym, they are very enthusiastic and just very positive overall. The equipments wear me out pretty well and I love it! The only thing I find extremely senseless is their closing times. There are days where the latest they close is at 7pm and because of the timed workouts you'd have to be there by 6:30pm, & there are days where they close at 6pm so you have to be there by 5:30pm. Like really?? People LEAVE WORK at 5:30 pm. Not to mention the rush hour traffic.

I apologize if I sound rude but for a gym, I find that completely ridiculous and unacceptable. I find myself going twice sometimes once a week because I never make it in time before they close. The fact I'm paying $60 a month for a gym I barely use, drives me up the wall. I didn't know about their hours before I joined or I wouldn't have signed the contract. I thought the obvious, "It's a gym, of course they will be open until at least 8pm". SO disappointing Curves. It's a GYM, not a club. For those of us who have no time in the morning, people go to the gym after work to unwind. Instead, my gym doors are closed for me. Absolutely ridiculous. I do not recommend Curves for people who have busy lives like most of us nowadays.

I joined Curves after recovering from a devastating accident from which my ankle required screws and plates to hold it together. After one visit in 2011, I knew it wasn't going to work out due to the pain. I then submitted the required doctor's notice. It said I would be Ok to work out in two months, but I was still in pain, only able to have physical therapy for the break. In fall 2011, I moved to another state and called Curves, to find out if I would need another note to formally end my membership. I was told I was out of the system and did not need any further notes. I did not think this was accurate, but I was assured by the woman at Curves that I was not a member anymore and there was nothing further I needed to do, the first doctors note would suffice.

After several years, I noticed this June (2014) that I was continued to be charged $32 each month for an excess of $1000 and it was clear to them that I was not attending. After calling them to discuss a possible misunderstanding, I was laughed at by the person on the other line and dealt with in a very unprofessional manner. Upon speaking with the manager the next day, I was told to cancel by the manager. I was told nothing would be done about it, it was my fault and that I should have known the policy that I signed. I maintain that I called and was given false information by a Curves personnel member, the person I spoke with on the phone who told me because they had the doctor's note I was fine and would not be charged, I was not a member.

I also submitted additional comments earlier. I am feeling much better about the Gilroy Curves but still think $198 was a bit much for what I received. Just the same, I want to acknowledge Gilroy Curves employees who explain why so many other women seemed very happy there. I don't make much money so I have a different perspective than those with more disposable income because Curves supports good health and being unhealthy is far more expensive.

In other words, Curves does provide benefits,I did see some results and I am grateful Gilroy Curves is not as bad as some of the other Curves locations. This website reveals that once you quit a service it is important to monitor your accounts and to call your bank or credit card and block anyone from taking any more money than they should be taking. Some Curves franchises are part of the those people who are not to be trusted and Curves does not seem to do anything to clean up those organizations.

While it has benefits and is helping me get into shape, I have major buyers' remorse and hope to get out of their cancellation fee to cancel a $50/month membership. I realize too late I am paying way too much for a facility with minimal equipment that is closed Sundays. Only open a few hours on Saturday, closed in the middle of weekdays and closes early on Fridays. Half the time I've been there, their computers are not functioning. I regret I joined and hope this post saves others from making the mistake I made.

I signed a one-year contract with Curves in 2005. I was not happy with the program so I cancelled my membership later that year. This morning I was reviewing my husband's account online and noticed a charge for Curves for $39.00. I immediately called the bank and was told this debit has been deducted since 2009 was the furthest she went. I was told to get the check number from Curves so this could be cancelled. After driving to the nearest location, as my location was closed, I was told yes, amount was still being deducted because I did not cancel my membership. This infuriated me. I asked, "Well did anyone think of calling me to see if I was alive?!" I was told they normally do. I then asked for the check number. Checking my file there was NO CHECK. The account they are using is my husband's account. They were never authorized to use this account. FRAUD ALL THE WAY. They have taken well over $4,000 from my husband's account and the bank is also responsible for this. There are other details that I do not want to post because I will be seeking legal counsel. How do people sleep at night knowing they are crooks.

I signed a contract for what I thought was for 6 months. The amount that I was told would be debited from my account was higher than the amount that I was quoted. Most of this six month period, I was not able to go to the gym because of scheduling conflict. After the six month had ended, I continued to get a different amount debited from my account. When I contacted the club, I was told that I needed a 30 day written notice to cancel payments. Scheduled payments are not even notified before they are debited each month. I will not recommend this program to any working woman that is on a tight schedule. My lesson always get copies of all contracts.

I joined Curves in September 2013. The first problem I had was wanting to buy some of the bars because I was starting Curves Complete the next day and the owner didn't have any so I went to another Curves and bought some and got blasted for that! Her attitude was defensive like I did something to her and that I was wrong. Like any consumer, if one place doesn't have it I will find one that does. I bought them one more time but stopped because of her attitude. The second problem was that I had to wait 3 weeks to receive my Curves Complete Kit. When I got the kit the owner took my Curves Smart tag out and kept it. She said it was because she had to reset the machines to a new system or something. I got the Curves Smart tag back in November but the thing don't work right anyway.

Another problem is that her husband hangs out there. I thought this place was for woman to work out without prying eyes. Problem #4 - they're always eating fast food in front of you when you're working out. #5 - she's always trying to sell me something else like Avon, Mary Kay, Body Wraps or jewelry. One day she bothered me through my workout and I kept missing when the lady said switch. #6 - didn't tell me that there is a $2 charge for Zumba Class. #7 - gets attitude when ask her for receipt. #8 - owner is obese and has diabetes and high blood pressure and so is her 1 employee.

    # 9 - my counseling sessions are horrible. She doesn't understand anything I'm going through. When I tell her my issues they don't register in her head. I'm always wrong no matter what I say or do! She's always defensive and right. She has been off of the plan a while and gained her weight back and that she's there with the machines all day and won't get on one! Curve is a great idea! I've lost weight! But they have such ignorant and crappy owners! I hope you find one with a good owner!

Around 6 weeks ago, I received a mail from them stating they are closing the facility because of inability to renew their lease. The owner also suggested joining an alternate facility 5 miles away from this location - which of course was just a suggestion. My problem is that THEY ARE STILL CHARGING MY CREDIT CARD! If they close the facility without any prior notice, they CANNOT assume that I will continue to go the suggested alternative location. They need to refund me the charges for SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER and also refund me 50% of the joining fees since that was applicable for the whole year. Such a scam!!

My credit card has been unfairly billed, beyond the term I understood I signed on for. Owner falsified the date of my contract. I was not given a copy of the contract I signed. I understood the contract to be for a 3-month period but have been continued beyond that to be billed, without my knowledge. Owner does not respond to calls or to written note. My reason for not renewing my contract with this gym was (1) gym did not provide adequate information about and help with the Curves program, and (2) poor hours (closed every day for 3 hours in the afternoon, and not open past 7 pm on any day).

I joined Curves in 2005 and found it very boring. When my mandatory year was up, I went in and cancelled my membership. My husband handled all of our home finances so I didn't realize until he passed away that they have continued to debit our checking account. The location that I went to closed several years ago. When I found out, I called the Curves International corporate office. They told me if a location closes, it should have automatically cancelled my membership unless I physically went in and signed documents moving my membership to another location. When I called the local Curves, an employee told me that this happens to others and I am not the only one. The franchise owner called me and also said it's happened to others. She called a few times trying to get me to take an offer of reimbursement for 3 to 4 months or "free" membership for the amount of years that they have debited my checking account. If I wanted to be a member, I wouldn't have cancelled my membership! I wonder how many people are having this issue with Curves?

I was never told of this procedure, and I was also not told that canceling membership would cost another fee. I then overheard the owner of Curves speak badly of her customers, ridiculing them about their being overweight. I find this highly unprofessional and disrespectful. In the year I belonged, over 10 people quit. The reason was the owner was rude and made fun of her customers for being overweight and out of shape. Behind their backs, she would talk very badly about them, and I could no longer endure this behavior. I QUIT AND HAPPY I DID!!! I belong to Planet Fitness now, and I love it!

I joined Curves in Feb. of 2012. At that time, I signed for an annual contract. Nothing was mentioned/pointed out of the automatic renewal if I didn't cancel. I was not an active member due to my schedule and the VERY LIMITED hours in this local Curves. My last visit there was in Oct. 2012. I had several phone calls from the ladies at Curves, saying they missed me and wondered how I was doing UNTIL the last call of Jan. 2013. Then nothing; they dropped me like a sack of hot potatoes. Feb. came; I checked my bank account and saw they had taken that months out and thought, "Good, finally done".

March came and I checked my bank account to be safe. I didn't see anything for the date of DD that was set up, so I thought again, "Good, done with that"... So here we are June 19th, I am checking my bank and what do I see but a DD from Curves!!! I went back in my history and see that they changed the DD date to the middle of the month??? And they had been charging me every month even though my annual contract was up...

I called my local Curves and the OH SO FRIENDLY owner tells me that I signed an annual contract that automatically renews... "So, it's not an annual contract then... It's an ongoing contract with a start date, a minimum membership requirement and no end date..." I told her that I have not been active since Oct. almost 9 months and would a refund for the 4 months over my annual contract. It was a no go there. She said, "If I did that for everyone, I would be out of business." NO, you got 12 months out of me; my visits, if I had gone 3 days a week would have totaled 2 months, so you got 10 months of charges and NO SERVICE.

Funny though how when I was within my annual contract, they called me to see where I was, but as soon as that contract was up and they were getting more money out of me that I wasn't aware of, they never once called. For 4 months, they never called and asked "where I was", "We miss you", "We see you haven't visited in the last 6 months+ and your contract is over; we want to make you aware that you are still being charged"...

I could have died and they would have bled my account dry, never calling and asking where I was. Terrible business practice, terrible customer service. I will never join another Curves and never recommend a Curves to anyone ever!

I joined Curves to support my niece who wanted someone to go with her. The first thing that made me question the program was the push-to-eat prepackaged food/meals while on the diet plan. If I wanted to eat prepackaged meals, I would have joined one of the other nationally recognized programs that specialize in that. When my niece was weighed in the second week and noted to have gained, not lost weight, she was verbally chastised and reduced to tears, told not to make excuses, and "get with the program." She discussed the problems with me for an opinion.

Since I am a retired nurse, I gave her the best evaluation I could based on my experience and knowledge. When she tried to further discuss the problems with her "trainer," she was again reprimanded for discussing the program "with an outsider who didn't know the program" and "didn't know what they were talking about anyway!" This sounds like cult-style manipulation to me. Any questions were referred to the website, no one-on-one answers were given. When it was noted that more fruit was being consumed, she was told "if you are going to eat all that fruit, you might as well eat a doughnut". Much of the advice/guidance given was contrary to everything I have been taught or have read about regarding weight loss.

The certificates on the wall state only that the people have completed a specified training course. Not one indicated an actual degree or certification of any type. The literature and the sales pitch indicate one-on-one contact with personal trainers and nutritionists. Yes, via computer. To me, this is NOT one-on-one. They are not supportive, they are patronizing, condescending, manipulative, and in some ways, degrading. They say that they need to push to get results, but they don't need to bully, be rude or be plain ignorant. The plan is supposed to be individualized and I guess it is, in that it is a single individual plan that you MUST adhere to or else!!! I am extremely disappointed in this program and will be contacting the BBB and Attorney General office in my state.

The Curves in Greenlawn, NY - I had Bariatric surgery a little over 6 months ago. In February 2013, I went in search of a gym to aid me in my weight loss journey. I looked online for a gym that would not break my pockets and that was close to where I work. I found Curves and went in for the No Obligation appointment. At first, all seemed well. I was greeted by the owner and she went on to throw the usual sales pitch. The reason I was interested is because she told me for $12.95 a week, I would have access to the gym and a nutritionist to assist with my own personalized meal plan. So I signed up. The next day, when I came in for my evaluation and to sit down with my nutritionist, I was surprised for what I actually received. The lady that was supposed to be a nutritionist was just a regular employee. She had no knowledge whatsoever about Bariatric patients and our special needs.

Also, I did not find out until a week later that I was actually paying $56 a month and that had to be debited from my account and could not be paid in cash. I was also not informed that this program had a one-year commitment, which is very inconvenient for me since I spend 4 months away from Huntington. Two weeks into this program and I was fed up. A few days before they were scheduled to debit my account, I called and let one of their employees know that I was no longer interested in continuing my membership and that they no longer had permission to debit my account. She tried the usual ''Maybe we can work things out'' bit, but I refused. She went on to say that she had no idea how to stop the debit from the account but that she would leave a note for the owner who would be in the morning and she would take care of it. I went the next day and was made to pay $15 to cancel my membership. I asked about the debit from my account and she said that she handled it and that there should be no charges.

Three days later, I get a notification from my bank telling me that I have an overdraft charge, because Curves tried to debit my account. I only keep a certain amount of money in this account (I'm so glad I didn't give her my other account). Two days later, she again tries to debit the account and causes another NSF fee. Why would you try to debit the account after you were told not to? Not only that, my membership was cancelled so what are you trying to bill me for? I am angry and upset because this woman is taking money from a single mom with a three-year old. Does she not have any shame? Something I didn't even use? I called her today to try and get my charges refunded and she outright told me that I cost her money! The nerve of this lady (Helen Jones)! She steals from me and has the nerve to tell me that I cost her money. Ridiculous! All in all, Curves is nothing but a big scam. There is no nutritionist consult, no personal training, they are not upfront with the details and conditions because if they were, I can guarantee more than half of their members would never have joined.

By now, I had it with Curves. It was an awful place to be from the beginning. I hate it that even after they gave me a withdraw date, they never honor that date and sometimes they would make withdraws in the middle of the month, sometimes in the end. You would never know when. So I personally went to my location and canceled my membership and asked them to make sure it was canceled.

You would think that should have been enough to just go there and terminate my contract. No, not for them, next month there was a charge for a monthly fee and after I complained to them and tried to get my money back, they plainly said that that was nothing they could do about it. The month after that, the same thing happened again, so I had to close my account in order for them to stop withdrawing money from it. Curves is a very dishonest corporation. Originally, I signed a contract and paid by check month to month. The sales woman, Judy, talked me into doing an automatic withdrawal so that I could "save" $10 a month. After one year, I decided not to go back. They were not doing the weigh-ins or anything else that they promised on the initial consultation.

Judy did not inform me that I would have to send them a letter in writing to cancel my membership. When I finally realized the mistake, I called the owner, Rhonda, and she refused to work with me. She said that this had happened with one other person. After reading the reviews on this site, I doubt it was only one! However, she said that there was no way I could be refunded the money. She claimed it was corporate policy. **! I could have died and they wouldn't have questioned it.

I received a telephone call from my daughter in Maryland that Curves had withdrawn from her bank account the full year membership fee. My daughter only authorized a one time payment of $68.00 for the two month certificate.

My daughter contacted the owner and she stated that her credit card was kept on file and that she would pay for her mother's membership. The agreement between myself and my daughter was that if I could exercise without further damage to my hip, she would pay for my membership. I stated to my daughter that with the hip problem and the problem with my feet (Neuropathy), I was not interested in joining Curves. The question still remains, how can she withdraw the money out of my daughter's account without her authorization? If she can do this on her say so, then anyone who has your bank card number can withdraw money from anyone account.

When I had joined Curves Feb 2011, most of the staff were very helpful to a point. Most of the staff members seemed more concerned about the silly daily games to win stuff and the decorations in the building, the helping, the members! And not that I have a problem with Curves being a social gathering, but more than not it seemed that the machines were tied up because most members were to busy socializing and the staff right along with them! I paid good money to get a work out not to be jumbled up in a gaggle of ladies talking about their problems!

As well, I had an injury to my hip in late Oct 2011, so I didn't attend Curves for a few months not even thinking to call them. But once I was recovered, I started to think why would the staff from Curves not call the members if they don't show up? I could have died or been in a bad accident and my membership dues would have still been coming out! So so so unprofessional! So, when I did go back to do my workouts, I voiced my opinion and all they had to say was well you know we are busy! Hahahaha! is all I have to say to that. I see how busy they are always playing silly games and decorating the building and getting on the way of people trying to work out! Sarnia is a small city, town so I am sure that most of the staff and the members know each other bit as I have said before, I was paying good money to work out and get into shape not socialize.

My workout times were usually between 8am to 10am. So, in my opinion, I think really this matter should be looked into, I just found my whole experience there was very very unprofessional and I would not recommend going to this location unless you want to socialize!

All in all, my experience there was not a good one like I said my workout times were in the morning, usually the same person there at that time! I don't know what you do with these letters if anything at all but it just feels good venting anyway!

I joined the St. Simons Island location in July 2011. We had to move over 30 minutes away to Brunswick, Ga in September 2011. I sent a letter with proof of address change to the owner stating due to the distance, I needed to cancel. She did not bother to respond so I called a month later. At that time she told me she would "put me on medical leave" for three months to see if we moved back. She said if I cancelled she would charge me $100. The normal fee to cancel early is $50.

I called corporate to tell them what happened and that I felt it was fraudulent for her to put me on "medical leave" since I was not disabled. I also said after researching it that the normal fee to cancel early was $50 but that I shouldn't even be out that much since the Curves policy is if you move over 25 miles away, that you can cancel without penalty. Corporate was no help. They said the owner was "doing me a professional courtesy to put me on medical leave" and that the $100 was because "she waived the joining fee" which was not relevant because I was a member in NC and if you are a member, there is no joining fee to transfer.

Basically this is a dishonest, greedy company. They do not honor their own policies and corporate said they "believed the owner". Whatever happened to the customer is always right and whatever happened to honesty and honoring policies? I was a member at other Curves since 2005 and I will never join again after the way I was treated. My advice to anyone would be to run--not walk--away from this company!

I signed a 2-year contract with Curves - on the first year there was no way out and the 2nd year I could get out with 30 days written notice. Due to child-care issues, I barely ever went. Two months into the second year of my contract, the credit card I had given them expired. That jogged my memory that I wanted to cancel the membership and when I went to the club to discuss, I found it was closed. With the club being closed and the card expired, I figured that was the end of it. Well, no. Apparently the owner also owned another Curves so she just moved my membership there, changed the expiration date on my credit card and continued on. When this came to my attention (six months later) via a letter stating my bank had refused payment I had a large past due amount on my credit card. I had retired that card from service and thus was not checking the balance on it. When I called the new club she said she sent me a letter (which I never received) stating my membership would be transferred.

I sent a letter that day asking for my membership to be canceled. I got a letter back stating that my contract requires I send the letter through certified mail. By the time I got them the certified letter, it was too late in the month and they insisted they would need to charge me for the following month but then they'd be happy to cancel my membership.

When I asked if the letter they supposedly sent me was sent through certified mail, there was silence. When I asked if there was anything in the contract about giving them the authority to change the expiration date on my credit card, there was silence. I understand I stupidly signed a ridiculous contract and they are going to stick to the letter of the law to make it as difficult as possible for me to get out of it. However, I signed a contract with a location that is no longer there, using a card that is no longer valid, and they are acting as though I'm the one trying to change the rules.

Never again. I will warn anybody and everybody to stay as far away from Curves as possible.

I moved to Texas in November of 2010, and I had been a very happy member of Curves in Kentucky for a few years. I lost over 40 pounds while using Curves. I went to Curves here in Sulphur Springs, Texas on 22 Feb 2011. I joined and paid upfront for one year. I wrote them a check for $660.55. They have terrible hours at this Curves so I bought a door pass which would let me work out before I go to work in the mornings. I have a horse farm so we start early and stay late.

Then, I went to renew my pass the first week of July, right after the 4th. I was told that they were no longer using door passes. I told the owner that it would mean that I could not come back because she doesn't open until 9:00 a.m.,closes for two or three hours at lunch, reopens around 4:00 p.m. and stays until 7:00 p.m. She said, "I was afraid of that." I asked to cancel the contract and she said that she would issue me a refund.

I've gotten a lot of people I know to join Curves because of the great success I had at the Curves in Kentucky. But if we don't get this cleared up soon, I will surely tell my bad experience with them and tell other people that they should not join because it is a rip off. People should get what they paid for and the changes in the policy in the middle of my membership time is of no fault of mine. I only want what is due to me.

I am a level 3 Personal Trainer. I had been working at a branch of Curves for 7 months in total (Curves Cowbridge, 4 Eagle Lane, Cowbridge Vale of Glamorgan, CF71 7AL.) and experienced extremely unprofessional treatment on the hands of my boss Patricia East who owns a total of four franchises of Curves in South Wales, UK. (Cowbridge, Bridgend, Baglan and Porthcawl, which is soon to open), along with other non-fitness related businesses.

I was unfairly dismissed from my job on 29/07/2011 because of the fact that I raised a grievance of bullying that I suffered from two other members of staff. One of whom is a manager of one of her branches of Curves.

She didn't wish to have to deal with my grievance of bullying; therefore, she dismissed me instantly without any prior warning (either verbal or written) or any prior suspension. I had not done anything wrong. I have since sought legal advice and have been informed that this constitutes 'Wrongful Dismissal', and I have a case to take her to a tribunal regarding this, which is being dealt with presently. It also breaches my contract of employment in several ways.

If I had worked there for over a year, I would've been able to claim for 'Unfair Dismissal', and I believe this is another reason why she was unwilling to investigate my claim that I was being bullied, as she knew it would be a lot easier to get rid of me before I had given a year's service, and therefore, wouldn't have as many rights.

Additionally, she sacked a colleague of mine 3 months before me, because she fell pregnant. This former colleague is also taking Patricia East to court over her Discrimination and Unfair Dismissal, and I am appearing as a witness for her.

Another former colleague of mine voluntarily resigned in May 2011 due to the fact that she was also being bullied by the same manager as me, but despite the fact that she had also raised a grievance and several complaints from both staff and Curves members about this particular managers conduct, no investigation had been carried out into this and no disciplinary action had been taken against this manager.

There has been an enormous turnover of staff within the Curves branches that Patricia East owns over the time I have worked there, and I am told by other members of staff that it has been that way ever since she took over.

Colleagues of mine that witnessed the way I have been treated by her are disgusted and no longer have any trust in her. Several of them have since joined working unions to protect themselves, and many of the Curves members I know and worked with have said they will be cancelling their membership as soon as their contracts end, as they too are thoroughly disgusted by the way she has treated her staff. According to members, the gym conditions have deteriorated drastically since she took over the franchise, and I can vouch for the fact that the entire time I worked for Curves, there was frequently no drinking water available to members and no paper towels or toilet paper available in the toilets. We were frequently left with no cleaning products to use to maintain the place and broken equipment which she failed to arrange to fix for long periods of time. Her main focus the whole time I worked there was on sales and marketing and never on customer service.

In my opinion, Curves is such a wonderful concept that I feel she is giving the company a very bad reputation.

I have been a member of Curves since January 24th 2009. Tonya took over this Curves on July 1st 2011 along with another Curves in Corydon, Indiana.

My first actual encounter with her was on August 19th. Since she has taken over, the machines haven't been maintained to be able to get an accurate workout with CurvesSmart. The Squat hasn't worked since the first week she was there and the computer system doesn't even recognize that you've used the machine. Now, there are two other machines that the computer will not recognize.

After repeated ignored complaints to her staff on August 17th, I put out-of-order signs on the three machines, which finally got her attention. She was at the Curves in Brandenburg, along with her husband and 5-year-old daughter, on August 19th. When I arrived, she has yet to introduce herself, a member of her staff said "hey Janice" as I walked in. Tonya said, "so you're Janice". I said, "Yes ma'am, I am". I did my entire work with her staring at me.

When I finished, she handed me the signs and told me to take them with me and that she didn't appreciate me putting them on the machines. I said that I didn't appreciate not getting what I paid for, or her ignoring the numerous complaints from several members. She then informed me that CurvesSmart was a privilege, not part of my membership and that it didn't matter if it worked. I've met lots of new people and made several friends and I have enjoyed my time as a member of Curves, until now. With Tonya, it's definitely about her and her money; not the members.

Due to Tonya's attitude and irresponsibility, I have decided to end my membership with Curves. I don't feel like she deserves to have me as a member especially since I go out of my way to workout there. Curves is 20 miles from my home, but I work out five days a week.

I have been a member since 2007. About 1 year ago, the club was sold to a new owner (Margaret) and since then a lot of little, petty and annoying changes have been made.

When I first joined, members would receive free T-shirts when 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, etc. workouts were reached. The new owner claimed that the corporate headquarters would no longer give T-shirts for all these workouts but would continue to provide them for free when 500 and 1000 workouts were reached.

I had just reached 400 workouts and was looking forward to my T-shirt; I was told I could buy one. More recently, I've learned of the mistreatment of employees (the ladies employed prior to the change in ownership). Things like changing and reducing their hours and making them work at different clubs on a moment's notice; all in hopes that they'll quit, which some have done.

Well, I finally have become disenchanted with this place and decided to cancel my subscription. Prior to canceling, I reached my 500th workout. My free T-shirt was ordered and I was told it would take 3 weeks to arrive. A few days later, I gave my 30-day notice of cancellation. I just learned that they canceled my free T-shirt order. So I have to abide by their contract rules regarding 30-day notice prior to canceling so that they can continue to take my money for another month, but they cannot honor their policies of free T-shirts for reaching 500 workouts? This type of petty, unprofessional, behavior is the reason I'm leaving Curves.

The person who answered told me to fax a letter in; I indicated it would come in 5 minutes. She also said too late for March it was past 1/2 way in month. I kept sending the fax and it was rejected for over half hour. I called back in got the same person and told them the issue and who I was, she indicated the machine was in use and re send. I did so and asked they call back if it did not go through.

Time moves on and I did not check my bank until 5/18 and noticed the draft still hitting my account. I called in asked for the manager, who is Robin, told her the story. She in 2 minutes pulled up the date I phoned in to cancel, but said they never received the letter and would not refund either April or May at all. I asked that if she logged those cancellation calls, why not a call back to customer. No response. I asked if she had a log of customers who entered the facility. She did, she admitted my wife had not been in for over 6 months, not once. I asked her if she knew I phoned in to cancel and the membership was not being used that could she clear to refund just 2 months, no way! I told her she will go out of business the way she treats customers like me and I will call the AG office, etc. I faxed another cancellation letter in and she called back and left message she would credit one month. I started my relationship with this company in October of 2003 when I became a member. In May of 2004, I was asked if I would like to work there. My son was just starting college, so I thought it would be a fun way to earn a little extra money to help him with his expenses. In late 2005, the club owner was involved in a rather serious car accident and unable to attend to the club for about 3 months. During this time, I assumed all "manager" duties to keep the club operating in her absence which included drafting the members' accounts and payroll. It was then that she promoted me to manager. Other employees came and went like a revolving door, but I stayed. I enjoyed the free membership and had made some friends that I only saw while at work. Everything was going fine until the membership started to decline and the owner began to lose profit. She decided to sell the club mid-2008.

The club was then purchased, and the transition made in early March of this year. The new owner is a male who is never actually in the club nor does he have his hand in anything but paying the bills. He's left that responsibility to his estranged wife and wife's friend whom he made the new manager with the sale. Also quite involved is his 24-year-old daughter. From the very beginning, it was made clear to all 3 employees who "came with the club" that they were doing us a very big favor by keeping us employed because there were at least a dozen people who would love to come to work for us. It was a difficult transition to say the least. The new manager and owner's estranged wife had little to no professional business background or experience in running a fitness facility at all.

After a couple of months, problems started to occur. The three of us were treated much differently than the owner's daughter who has the same title/responsibilities. Actually, that was not a surprise. The surprise was that 2 of us were obviously targeted to either submit our notice of resignation or a plan was set in motion for termination. The first to go was forced to quit. One of the employees got sick and she feared that she had caught the illness. She also was allergic to the disinfectant that is sprayed in the club. She asked that we try only to use what was necessary to keep the club clean and to help her allergies. The manager made it very clear to rest of us that she did not care for this employee and that she would rather her not be there anymore. The employee had some health issues just about the same time as the first employee, but she was asked to bring in a doctor's note before she would be placed back on the schedule. The other employee was not. Consequently, that employee realized that her presence was not wanted as an employee at the club any longer, so she resigned.

I, on the other hand, was set up for termination. It took only 9 months for this to happen. I received my last check along with the "Notice of Termination" on Monday, December 7th, as soon as I walked in to work. The notice listed 5 reasons for termination. The first two are blatant lies. I have the proof to dispute. The third is an issue that has never been discussed or even brought up with me. The fourth is for missing 1 mandatory staff meeting because I was in the hospital. Another employee missed that same meeting and nothing was ever said to her about it. The owner's daughter has missed more than 1, and again, nothing was ever said or done about her absence. Last is an exaggerated version of hearsay that involved a discussion between my self and another employee and overheard by a member. I was spoken to about this "incident," but the other employee involved never was. Two of these accusations are clearly discriminatory, and two are bordering on slander or defamation of character as a copy of these written accusations were sent to "Correspondence." It is clear that the reason I was no longer welcome was that I posed a threat or was intimidating to the new manager. I knew the daily operations of the club and did not need to call her all the time for decision making. Also, I had a rapport with 95% of the members, and she did not like that either. I was not someone whom she could play the dominance game with.

So she hired a 21-year-old with no experience or job skills to replace me. She is paying her $1.50 less per hour that she was paying me and she has someone that will stroke her unprofessional and inflated ego. There is now only 1 pre-club sale employee that remains there, and the only reason she does is that she too strokes the manager's ego and has no opinion about anything.

Existing and new member advice: There is always a 50% discount on the s/u fee. Never let the staff member push you to sign up the day you check out the club. If you plan to cancel your contract once the 12 months have been satisfied, you need to do it in writing. I have seen owners continue to charge members' accounts for literally years when they know fully well that the member thought they had fulfilled their contract. I was told "never to call these members" for any reason (they constantly show up on various reports) because they would be made aware they were still being charged and get upset.

I would not recommend Curves Carlsbad North as a place to seek employment nor a place to join. Find another Curves location in that area - La Costa, Oceanside, San Marcos, Encinitas, Vista.

On 1/24/06 I signed a contract with Curves to take money out of my checking account for my monthly dues. On 2/24/06 I signed a paper saying not to take it out of my checking account and to switch to my visa for montly dues IF i didn't pay cash for the month. In May 2006 I had surgery and couldn't go to curves and had a dr note for one month. My visa expired on 8/07. I never went back to Curves since May 2006. Since my visa expired they send me a bill for 54.00 (return check fee and service fee). I went and paid this on 8/15/06 and on that same day I signed a paper to stop all payment going to curves as I would not be attending. Sandy (Kim) Blackmon was the worker there on that day. No payments were made to Curves in Sept. 06, Oct. 06 and Nov. 06 as I had signed the paperwork saying to stop everything.
Well, to say the least...I guess in December 06 Curves decided to start taking it from my checking account again and did from Dec. 06 Until Oct 2009. On my check statement I thought the 29.00 was a bill being paid to my sunshine account since I owe money for that. I didn't realize it until I started the online checking and saw that it said Miscellaneous Item for 29.0. That is when I found out I was paying curves and had been for A LONG TIME. I called Curves and went up there. The lady told me there was nothing in my file saying that I stopped payment but I did and that is why those months are not paid for (9/06, 10/06 and 11/06). She said she was the new owner and bought the place in August/September 2008 and just kept sending bills to people that were getting them before. I asked her if she didn't think it was odd that she had never meet me and I had never been there since May 2006 but that I would keep paying 29.00 a month. She said she tried to call me (or her employee did and talked to me) I told her this never happened because why would I say...I haven't been since May 2006 but hey, you keep taking out 29.00 a month for me. What should I do? I need help on this. Thanks Jill Dennison

To date they owe me $534.99 & the corporate office in Waco, Texas will not help me recoup the funds from the club owner. I have called the club everyday for 3 weeks & faxed repeatedly everyday to have the owner call me. Finally he called me & offered a 3 month refund even though his policy is to do nothing. I held a membership at the Whitehall, MI Curves for a year. During this time, my knee was repeatedly hurt and I had to stop working out. On March 17, 2008, I gave written notice to end my membership. The franchise owner, Suzie, talked me into a 3-month medical hiatus, hoping I'd reconsider. That fall, I was away from home, caring for my dying father. Suzie contacted my husband to say the 3-month hiatus was ending. He believed that meant my option for continuing membership at the $34 rate was over and the request for cancellation would be in place. Suzie claimed she warned that she would restart monthly charges.

I have not been to Curves since March 2008. Since I was not at home or handling finances, I did not notice that monthly fee charges had been started up again. I just found that I have paid for membership for the last year! Curves International said they have nothing to do with the problem. Suzie sold the franchise, and the new owner can't repay my money. The new owner looked at my records, saw my letter, and offered free membership. But I have moved and still can't use half the machines. My friend who is still a member at that franchise had talked to Suzie about my inability to continue membership a long time ago. I believe that Suzie should have ended my membership and took my money, knowing fully well I was not attending during the last year.

Both my daughters have stopped from coming to Portage, Wisconsin's Curves some time ago. I, myself, would like to now officially quit curves as of July 31, 2009. Since I consider myself a professional woman and one who teaches others on how to live in this world with others, I feel you, as a company, (Corporate Curves), should know that due to your management team in the Portage, Wisconsin's Curves, both my daughters and I have quit Curves now.

Portage, Wisconsin's Curves management needs to be taught how to deal with all types of individuals. Even if they do not want to act professional towards certain ones, they need to show everyone that everyone is important and not just a chosen few. Anyone can see that this management team is out for the almighty dollar and nothing more. Granted that this is a big part of business, but when it shows up in how one treats people, it becomes extremely unprofessional and simply is not acceptable in any part of the business world. The Portage, Wisconsin's Curves and their so-called professionalism truly needs to be looked over by your corporate Curves. Maybe consider look into having training done before putting them in charge of dealing with the general public.

It seems to me that Portage, Wisconsin's Curves managements' professional tactics (if they had any) fly out the window when it comes to personally dealing with the people that they need to deal with on a daily basis. Portage, Wisconsin's Curves management tends to have a big consistency issue which, again, should have an ongoing training program set up for all Curves staff. I do not want to be contacted by your present Portage, Wisconsin's Curves management team until it's under a new management. I thank you for your time. Sincerely, a sad ex-customer.

The Curves in Lawrenceburg does not have convenient hours for my schedule. I worked out at the one in Lawrenceburg on a Saturday morning a few weeks ago with no problem. I was taking a week's vacation from work and went to the Lawrenceburg facility again on a Saturday morning and the owner told me I could not work out with my travel pass. Her Curves is now a 24/7 facility and only certified members can work out there.

I was always told that if you have a travel pass, you could work out at any Curves location. Apparently, this is not true since they are all privately owned/operated. The owners can make up any rules they want. I called my Curves and ask about it, and was told it really is up to the owners. I know Curves have district managers. There should be some type of guidelines for operation that everyone follows. If you think you are going to work out when you travel or just taking time off work, you better call ahead and see if they will let you.

Knowing so many germs get passed through touching handles on machines, we requested hand sanitizers (The type you put one pump into the hands, and don't have to rinse off). The owner did not want to provide this, so a member bought a large bottle at WalMart and brought it to Curves and put it on table for all to use. The owner took the bottle, broke the pump off it and threw it away . She said she didn't want any in the establishment. How rude!

We got the new stretch machine and they put the little mats in the closet and said we couldn't use them anymore. I loved the machine and use it but also still like to do extra stretches on the floor. They did eventually put the mats back out. Good for them.

I have gone to this Curves since it opened and love it, when they went to the smart machines card system, they wanted me to pay $15 more per month for it. I asked to be grandfathered into the new system and even said I'd pay a one time up front cost but keep my monthly rates as it is. I was rudely turned down and treated badly over my asking.

Since I have been going to Curves since it opened, I was shown how to do an advanced workout. I liked doing the advanced workout, but now they tell me I can't do it that way anymore. I never hold up anyone behind me. I am always sure of that. They tell me its not safe to do it, but it was for years, and now because of the smart card system, they say its not safe? They want me to pay the extra $15 per month. So, now I don't do the advanced regular workout. I feel like I am being mistreated and I don't feel appreciated as a long time member. I don't feel Curves cares about its members health at all. I sometimes think of quitting curves more and more often.

In 2004, I developed numerous medical problems and my doctor wrote a note stating that I needed to refrain from exercising until further notice, at which time Curves was to stop deducting money from my account. Several weeks later, I mailed a handwritten note to Curves stating I was cancelling my membership due to health reason. I recently discovered that Curves has been deducting the monthly membership from my account since that time.

1.5 years ago, the original owner sold the membership and the new owner says she's not responsible and it's my fault for not keeping up on my bank account. I went over to the club that I originally joined and asked the women who was working there to show me my paper file. In it, they had my doctor's note but no copy of the letter I'd sent to them cancelling my membership. I then asked to see the electronic file on me and it showed me as cancelled membership but next to it there was a date of June 2009. It also showed that I had not been to the club since February 2004. Curves never made any attempt to contact me over the years, only kept taking my money.

They continued to debit my account and I was forced to send a certified letter to their establishment, requesting a refund. Four payments were deducted without my approval and the owner of the business never responded to messages or correspondence.

In addition, I have driven to their site several times and spoke with representatives who apologized to me for not being treated fairly and professionally. The debits stopped for a few months and then out of nowhere, another debit to my checking account was made by Curves of La Plata in May 2009. I was awarded only $300.00 of my $1,200.00 because the Ms. ** had only owned the Curves where my membership was at, since January. Also, the corporation provided them with an attorney who used that fact Ms. ** is a schoolteacher to gain favor with the Judge who has children in the school system. Now Curves has filed an appeal, which costs them $160.00 total court fees to not even pay me the $300.00 they owe me. It sounds more personal than doing the right thing. This seems spiteful.

I found out they were still taking out money from my checking account. When I had the bank stop payment, the next thing I new Curves turned me to my local district attorney's office for writing a hot check. What hot check, I did not think that stopping an electronic fund transfer constitutes writing a hot check. When I called the agency and started explaining my situation without naming names, she right away asked me if it involves Curves. I said yes and she said I had to pay it or I would go to jail and have to pay fines, and then she hung up on me. This led me to believe that she is working with the owner of the Curves that I was going to. They ended up getting funds deducted again and when I had to finally close my checking account because I had other suspicious activity on my account, they turned me in again for writing a hot check. When does it end with these people? I mean when I go by Curves there maybe one or two cars at a time. I guess they feel this is their way of making sure they still get their money, even if no one comes. I am trying to find an attorney to see what can finally be done about these people.

At first the phone just rang off the wall and then we got the message, This number has been disconnected! The owner had just closed the doors and walked away.. The best part is she kept taking $34.00 a month out of our checking accounts right up til December so far. It cost us $64.00 plus a bag of groceries (for the needy) to sign up. We would like our membership money plus 2 months of fees returned to us for a total each of &128.00. Now here comes the big problem. My doctor put me thru numerous tests and recommended I quit the exercise program as it is too strenuous for me. I was given a free month's use of the Curves facility in Coal Valley, IL. After this month (Dec., '07), I decided that this was a perfect exercise regimen for me. I paid, up front, $218.00 for a six-month membership. It would begin in Jan., 08 and go through the end of June, '08. To everyone's shock, all the members of the Coal Valley, IL. Curves, received a letter stating that it would be closing down & our last day would be Feb.29, 08. The women who worked at this Curves informed all members who would not be going to Madonna Reda's Curves facility in Milan to write letters, asking for their remaining membership money back, or if their dues were being withdrawn from accounts, to have this stopped immediately. Many members wrote letters-as with me, the facility in Milan would be a hardship-this would add 20 miles on to the mileage I was already driving to the Coal Valley facility, but Coal Valley was the most convenient for me-there was much less traffic & I got there quicker than if I were to go to any other Curves. This is why I chose this facility & no other.I would be spending much more time driving than exercising if I were to have gone to the Milan Curves-it was out of the question for me, and I explained all of this to Madonna Reda in my letter, plus I included a copy of my cancelled check for $218.00.

Well, I wrote two (2) letters immediately, asking for my money back. I took one letter to the Coal Valley Curves & mailed the other to the Milan Curves. I also e-mailed Madonna Reda twice, later on, when I heard nothing from her-nor did I get any money back. Ofcourse she had to stop the withdrawal of funds from the women's accounts who paid their membership dues this way-if she hadn't, she would have been charged with theft or embezzlement. She knew it would be easier to keep the money from the women who paid by check-after all, for many people the money they pay to an Attorney may be more than the money they have coming back. I'm sure Ms. Reda just figured that this matter, as far as reimbursing the monies paid by check, would 'just go away', that women would become tired of asking for their money back & just forget about it. Well, I'm NOT forgetting about it!

I also contacted the Curves Corporate Office by e-mail, explaining the circumstances. They were nice, but also informed me that this was a franchise & there was not much they could do. BUT, they did assure me that they would contact Ms. Reda. Well, I never heard from either one of them again. I do have legal coverage through John Deere & this case would be covered-I informed Ms. Reda of this. I also stated I did not wish to have to go to an Attorney-it would be easier and better for her to jusy simply return the money. Right now I am considering taking this matter to '8 ON YOUR SIDE'- many people have suggested that I do this. It is a TV Station in Moline, IL., who will do their best at helping a person when they have been scammed or are having a problem such as this. The thing is, if I do this, it will be made public to everyone. I STILL do not wish to hurt her business, but I also know that there has to be other women who are out there WAITING FOR THEIR MONEY. Is there anything you can do to help?

The only damage I can think of here is that I will NEVER join a Curves Exercise Club again! I absolutely loved it, but the facility we went to was closed down due to no fault of the members-so none of us should have been forced to pay for a membership that was not returned to us, as was promised. I will admit that I am not being cheated out of a huge amount of money (I would have approx. $145.32 coming back to me-four months membership that I had left), but how many others are waiting for their money? You have to consider the total amount owed to other women, not just me. After all, Ms. Reda was the one who said all members who wanted their money back SHOULD WRITE LETTERS, REQUESTING IT BE RETURNED. WHY DID SHE NOT DO THIS FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WROTE CHECKS? It's a shame that people are allowed to get away with this kind of treatment. Not only is it sad, but also illegal. Thank you for listening.

I was so shocked because it seemed (here's to advertising) so open and friendly...not. Hi. I have been to two places here in brooklyn, one on Norman Avenue and one on Grand ave, in attempts to try out the club and see if it worked for me and a friend. I don't know if it's because I'm in shape (that's honestly the impression I was feeling) that they seem to discourage me at all from joining or if it's some sort of secret society but they weren't at all interested in trying to work with me. What is this about?

I called ahead on the second one just to ask and make sure it wasn't as shadey as the first and it seemed nice enough when the lady on the phone said if I came in she would give me a free week pass. I asked if there was a good time and she just said they were closed from 1-3 and then I asked when they were closed and she said 8. So I showed up at seven and told the girl at the counter (apparently a different person) that my friend was running late but I could go ahead and she started in with talking about how I needed a certain amount of time to do everything (45 min...I had an hour, by the way) and throwing various other excuses my way as to why I couldn't do it then (this had happened in pretty much the same way at the first club as well).

She apparently wasn't interested in keeping my business. Is this common with your clubs? My friend and I really were looking forward to this kind of workout as we liked the first time we tried it and just wanted a period of time to see if it worked for us in our schedules. However, it seems like none of your clubs have a work - or even business - ethic. I don't want to waste my time on bad employees or shabby business and I generally report directly to consumers' unions when meeting with bad business practices, as I don't want other people to have to endure stupidity either, but I wanted to check with the corporation first to see if these were simply uncompliant clubs (they are franchises). Please feel free to write at your leisure, as I will wait a few days before reporting to my normal consumer agencies. Thank you. Honestly what's up? These people act so strange like they're selling drugs behind the scenes or something...why discourage people from paying for your business?

The facility closed its doors on 1/31/08. My membership was pre-paid on 10/10/07 for a 12 months, plus 1 free month period. I received a letter dated 1/4/08 from the owner that reimbursement would be made of pre-payment owed. I am due $350 refund.

It has been 6 weeks since closing and I still have not received a refund.

I just recently signed up for the Curves 21
Day Fitness Study in Duncan Oklahoma on Sept. 25, 2007. When I initially
signed up, the young girl (Casey) was very pleasant and informative. She
showed me how to work the program and the machines. I felt very welcome.
When I left I felt very confident that this is the place for me! I did have
a question about the scheduling. I am only scheduled for 9 total visits and
my last visit was on Oct. 12th. That is only 18 days total between Sept.
25th and Oct. 12th. I wanted to know if the 21 Day Fitness Study
includes my days off from working out and if so, the days still
don't add up to 21. I was scheduled for my next visit on Sept. 27, 2007 at

    5pm in the afternoon.

I showed up a little bit early to talk to Casey about
the missing days. Casey greeted me very nicely and I asked her if she
could explain the 21 Day Fitness Program to me and why I was only
signed up for 18 total days with only 9 workouts. She was not sure so we went up to the front
counter to ask another person. I met with Tina Bailey who is the owner of the local
franchise. So, I proceeded to ask Tina why I was shorted a few days on my
program. I was very polite. It is not in my nature to be rude towards
anyone. I was still going to finish the program with or without the extra
days, I was just curious on how it works. Tina proceeded to tell me,Well, If you will shut up, I will tell you! and then turned to Casey

and said, And you shut up too!

I just turned and said that's
fine. and went to work out. I was so upset that the owner would treat a

I was a member of Curves making payment thru EFT. In May of 2007, my financial situation changed, and Curves agreed to suspend my membership until and if I became financially stable. They placed a couple of calls to me inquiring my status, but did NOT resume deductions.

In July, a deduction showed up on my bank statement from Curves. The owner claims that one of her staff members contacted me telling me they needed a cancellation letter. I faxed one in but they refused to refund my July deduction. I reminded her of the agreement and was basically told she could NOT reverse the transaction.

I have quite Curves permanently...and find their way of doing business deplorable.

I signed up for the fitness study program, after I received a flier in the mail. I completed the program, did everything I was supposed to do, and have yet to receive my refund check in the mail that I was told I would get at the end for completing the study. I had planned on joining curves when I could afford it because I like Curves, but since I never received my money from the study and I'm still asking for it, I will never join.

After signing the contract for bank deductions and attending two sessions at Curves, I became quite ill. The manager, at the time, stated I needed to have a document from the medical clinic that the illness prevented further participation but once recovered I could return with a letter of medical release.

At no time did I ask for my money back or to stop payment. I took her at her word, that when better, I could return. After 2 years of treatment, I was ready and obtained a medical release to return to exercise class. Because of the change in managers, the new manager would not honor the agreement. She first told me I had to have proof. When I brought the bank statements to her, she said she had no record of me attending or not attending and would not honor the agreement.

The money I invested into the program has not been returned nor have I been provided the services that were agreed upon when signing the contract.

I was a member of Curves and paid by EFT. I finished paying the year's commitment and was on a month-to-month basis.

In September 2005, my doctor send a note asking for a medical leave indefinitely because of surgery, arthritis and other medical problems. The leave was granted and dues were no longer taken out.

In January of 2006, without my prior authorization or notification of any kind, Curves resumed withdrawing dues from my account. They did this for 3 months. When I called them, they acknowledged the mistake and promised a refund--which was never issued.

When I called again in May of 2006, the owner claimed that they never issued refunds, that the dues would be applied when I returned, that they did not grant indefinite leave, that I should have let them know my status, and other excuses. This information was never given to me at any time. The refund has never been issued.
