I found American Addiction Centers a year ago on the internet. The last time I went there, they screwed up. They didn't take my insurance, but they gave me a scholarship anyway. I went there for detox and I got more out of the program the last time, so I've been clean now for about 60 years. I got the same tools which help me. There is a lot of changes going on, and they are growing fast and going in the right direction. Overall, everything is fine. Go for it.

The staff at American Addiction Centers were really comforting and welcoming, and they made the process as smooth as I could imagine it could be. It was a really good experience getting there. I did 28 days there, because that’s what my insurance allowed me to, and it definitely equipped me to succeed better than if I had not gone. It was pretty rough coming home and having to do it on my own but they gave me all the tools that they could. They also followed through on helping me set up PHP when I got back and look up psychiatrists in my local area. They gave me recommendations like, “Go to meetings, get a sponsor.” So, given the constraints the insurance put on us, they did a fabulous job.

While I was at American Addiction Centers, it sort of felt like the place was closing down. There were a lot of people leaving and it seemed understaffed. I was kinda nervous when I arrived. Logistically, they picked me up and it was not too much of a hassle. The one biggest complaint I have was that the case manager never saw me. I had to advocate to see her so that I could figure out how long I was there. That was sort of frustrating because I was just going day by day without knowing my plan.

Similarly, I had a therapist who didn't work at the place. She worked at the PHP. I didn't get any one-on-one therapy like I was told. I only saw her once and had to ask to see her again, at the very end, to sign paperwork. Broadly, American Addiction Centers is very helpful just to get out of the element, put yourself into a different place and get a new routine going. And the people who led the group were largely pretty awesome.

American Addiction Centers was the first rehab I've ever gone to back in February of 2019 and it was a great experience then. I went back for a detox in June and recently tried to go back but they refused to work with me financially. Before that all happened, I called in advance, they reserved a bed for me, told me to come in and had my bags packed. I got there but then they refused to work with me financially so they rejected me and I had to leave.

The staff was very uncaring except for the admission instructor. There were some people there that I recognize but as far as the way that they handled things, I felt it was very unprofessional. They did not have any compassion at all. They called me a liar. They said that I owed them money still from previously. I'm a cash-paying person so I don't have insurance. But in the past, I paid them upfront. The first time that I went, I was there for 21 days and I paid $4,000 upfront. The second time I went in, I paid $3,000 upfront. This time, they were unwilling to work with me with the payment plan after they told us that they would work with me and totally rejected me. I would not tell anyone to go there again. I used to be so happy about my experience the first time in February before the staff change, but I can tell that there was an entire staff change, things were just handled differently and the money is all that they were caring about.

I set up my daughter's thing with Hayley. There was a little difficult time with Eunice Detox Center, where she was supposed to be in there during the whole thing. Two weeks in, on about the 13th day, they told her that she had to be out on the 14th day because they have changed to just a detox facility. So, she ended up going on a scholarship thing from a friend and she went for a week to Crossroads in La Habra for a week. Then, through our insurance, she found La Hoya Recovery in San Diego, a rehab place. So, she has been in there now since the 24th of January.

The paperwork probably said that she left to get some medical advice from Laguna, and they said they did that because they said that she could stay the one more day, but she didn’t stay the one more day. She found another place and so she left. Hayley called me and said, “Why did you leave against medical advice?” And so I explained the situation. They were like, “You’re kidding me. They told her that she had to leave.” I said, “Yeah. But because she left on the 13th day and not the 14th day, it says AMA."

I had called over 30 facilities three weeks before I found American Addiction Centers. She was on 85 milligrams of a drug a day and nobody would take here until she was down to 40. Then the clinic was saying they do 2 milligrams a week and that would take five months. So finally, when I called them, Hayley said that Laguna would take her. The rest is history and hopefully it all works out. She’s doing fantastic right now. I liked the facility, it was warm, and the people were very friendly. They were caring every step.

However, after she was there for a week, her new roommate came in and she had drugs on her. So, the searching needs to get a little bit better. She came in and dropped all the drugs in front of my daughter. She was screaming at my daughter because she was high, and she didn’t even know her. My daughter told me that I had to get her out of there. So, I went there the following day and we had to get security to get her roommate moved out of that room. After I left and after they said they would do it, I got a text from my daughter and she said that she was hiding in another room and the girl still had not left. They didn't get the girl moved until 10 or 11 at night that day. So, that was not handled correctly.

There is also a lot of freedom there because on another day, a guy ran in and he took his clothes off, and he was like jumping on another girl. So, there are a few things because it’s coed that they need to pay closer attention. But, overall, they helped her and she was comfortable. It worked, so I’m satisfied in that part. She is still in the place.

I was under AAC's program for 30 days, but I didn’t really enjoy the detox that much. It’s pretty miserable. I’ve already detoxed but they still held me there. There’s not much interaction when you’re in detox. That’s why a lot of people probably don’t make it past that because it’s pretty bad. It was the patients there that made it bearable for me. Most of the crew were friendly but some staff seemed like they really don’t care. I got lucky that we got a really good therapist. He was cool. A lot of people struggled with talking to theirs because they just didn’t feel comfortable with it. But just getting a routine for 30 days helped. When they set schedules, everybody hates it at first, but it does help.

Oxford Center was one of the facilities that caught my eye and took my insurance. Driving through, the facility looked like we were out in the middle of a park. It looked beautiful. Once I got checked in, the people were very nice. Because going through a treatment facility was not something that was very easy on my part, they made it very easy for me to handle and took a lot of the stress off my end. The detox facility was very comfortable. Everybody there was very attentive to your care during detox, around the clock. Anything that you needed, people were right there for you. That whole time, the experience went by very smoothly. We didn't even realize what was happening.

I liked the lessons and classes and learning about my brain. That was the most important thing to me. I learned why I was the way that I was and why I couldn't stop. I also learned to deal with my emotions and control it and be able to understand other people’s emotions at the same time. It was kinda going back and almost starting over a little bit, but with your new thoughts in mind ‘cause you’re not the same person as you were. You really have to learn how to be a new person and overcome a lot of the things that you’ve done in your past. A lot of the things are repetitive and it needed to be because you need to hear it more than 10 times to really let it sink in.

With a facility that big, people are gonna have problems with everything but the staff did a really good job with that many people and for the services that they provided. It was a pretty great experience. In the female dorms though, the beds are like beds from church camp when I was in sixth grade. They're horrible and the most uncomfortable. When you are trying to get along with other people, a good night’s sleep is very important, and you cannot get it on a mattress that is 6 inches wide and has springs poking through it. With all of the money that is being put into that place, at least some new mattresses would be in order.

When I went to AAC, I was told that I was gonna be in detox for seven days. I was there for about 24 hours, and then, moved to residential. It was a while before they gave us an orientation so that we knew exactly what to do. It took a week before I got the orientation, so I was like wandering around, not understanding what to do next.

But once we got the orientation, then we were able to move to the different sessions that they had. It was kinda surprising. I think it had something to do with the time of year, being that it was around the end of the year. Some of the employees had benefits that they were gonna lose had they not taken time off. So, it was pretty intense because mostly everyone had some time that they needed to take off, and that impacted some of the consistencies and the services we were offered. It threw everyone through the loop. The staff seemed to care, though, so it was just the circumstances of the end of the year. They were also very accommodating and had a lot of knowledge. However, I relapsed three days after I left. So, I’m in the same predicament I was in.

The staff at American Addiction Centers is great. They had me fill out paperwork and do a urine test. However, I got there when there was this transition for Laguna going from a residential center to a detox one, and it was kind of a mess. They took my stuff but I don’t feel they were consistent as far as checking the bags. When I was there, drugs were brought in so I didn’t feel like it was a very thorough check of people considering the circumstances. Also, the cleaning was terrible. It was really difficult to get clean towels. You couldn’t get your sheets cleaned, changed or anything, no matter how long you’ve been there. I even asked if I could vacuum my own floor when somebody else moved out and I moved into the room. There was confusion on medicines that were being given out so that was a concern also. When you go to get your medicine, they ask questions and do your vitals in front of a line of people.

I'm still dealing with Laguna to try to get my state disability taken care of, and it’s been a nightmare. It’s been impossible to get them to help me with my paperwork. When I do get ahold of somebody, they apologize and say they are gonna take care of it but it still has not been taken care of. They sent in the documents but they sent in the wrong form. So, now I’m waiting and I need them to send in the correct form. But I still definitely got stuff out of it. It was helpful to be in an environment where you’re kind of a captivated. The meetings that they had were productive and helpful. The groups were good and the nurses were great. The décor was nice and up-to-date.

My experience with Oxford Treatment Center was horrible. I went there two years ago and everything there has changed drastically. They have too many patients and not enough nurses. It was very chaotic when I checked in. I had to sit there and wait for about six hours just to get admitted. There was one guy, he got there at 7 o’clock. He didn’t get admitted until about 3:00 in the morning. Those nurses were also very rude. I was on ** as a taper. I was only there to taper off **. And I was on ** for a year. I was prescribed it. I just went there to detox off it ‘cause I did not wanna take it anymore. And the nurse looked at me and said, “You don’t need this, and I’m not giving it to you.” It was PRN for me to get it. Whenever I need it, I can get it. He didn’t give it to me. He and the head nurse went behind my doctor’s back and took it off of my order.

I had a pretty good experience at AAC's Laguna facility when I was there for detox. But in May, I was at their Mississippi facility and things were not so great. Before I left, Neil and I talked to them multiple times, and we were sure that I was going to be allowed to stay on my medication the entire time as I’ve been on it since I was 12. But when I got there, they would not give me the medication that they had promised I could continue to take which caused severe anxiety. My heart rate went up to 133 there, and they sent me home because my heart rate was high. But it was due to withdrawal from my medication. Neil talked to everyone, the CEO and the COO, but it was ridiculous to try to get anybody to respond to any question. Despite this, the program in Mississippi was positive in every other way. I really liked the structure, like, you were held accountable even if you were private-pay. So, you had to go to class. That was very good.

The American Addiction Center in Florida sucked. It felt like any rehab when I first arrived, but within the second day, there were people getting drugs dropped off to the front door and the techs weren’t saying anything. I didn’t go there with that intention, but it was a bad experience. I left. And I’ve been sober since. There were certain workers that cared and tried to talk me out of leaving or doing stupid stuff. But honestly, I was pissed that I went there ‘cause I got stuck in Florida ‘cause of it.

I stayed there for three weeks and it was the longest I've ever stayed at a place. They drug-tested and alcohol-tested me every day that I was there and I didn’t come up positive for anything the whole time, but they still kept putting me in that group ‘cause I talked to the people. I've also gotten close to a lot of people there and they’re all still telling me how they get drunk, they jump the fence, and they go do stuff.

A guy overdosed when I was there. When he came on the property, I saw him hand a bag to somebody that was already a client. And there was no security. They just let him on the property. Then he checked in, went to his room and overdosed. It was a pretty bad experience. It made me just not wanna go to rehab. That’s why I stayed sober. Honestly, it did work but it worked like in a reverse way ‘cause I just wouldn't wanna go back to that environment.

The staff was good, but they just couldn't control us. We just have too much freedom. People have their phones so people bring drugs up. There’s no security. People walk out the front gate to go to 7-Eleven. One of the guys said he didn’t even try. He would just walk out the front and go to 7-Eleven and come back every day. It would take five minutes to walk from the office to the road, and that was all on their property, so they could have seen it but they just didn't care. There’s literally a homeless shelter that lives right across, outside the fence. So, when you jump it, there’s a bunch of homeless people that come up to you and offer you drugs ‘cause they know where you’re at and they know what you're there for.

The CEO didn’t care about anything but money and it showed. They tried to bribe me into staying when I was trying to leave. They said that they'd let me keep my phone and let me do other stuff. It was like a joke. Seven of us left the same day ‘cause we just realized it was just not the place. It was more about finishing 90 days so you could get your free 30 days to come back for 90 more days. They said they would give us free 30 days if we relapse. So it would seem that it would be okay to relapse and come back. Then you can pay an extra 60 days to do another 90 days. It just came down to a money thing to me, which I experienced at other rehabs, so it was not surprising. Rehabs seem like a big money scheme.

If your insurance covers you, they’ll keep you on a certain level. My parents worked too hard for their insurance for me. It took me calling my insurance company for them to move me out of detox and I wasn’t even detoxing. It took even longer to get off residential. Some people took only three days, but they kept me on res for almost the whole three weeks I was there. I didn’t move until the day before I left because my insurance was so good, it would cover it. They even cut our food portions in half, which as a grown man, I wasn’t even getting fed enough. By night time, I was starving and I was complaining. My insurance was paying all this money and I couldn't get a meal that would fill me up ‘cause they cut the food portions. We should be able to eat enough.

For the health and science class, they had a woman that had a degree is in holistic medicine. I believe in holistic medicine. But she was talking about blood type diets and all this stuff which isn’t backed by science and it made people mad. I didn’t care ‘cause I believe in holistic medicine but it was not appealing to people that would need this. Someone called her out in front of the whole class. So, after that, no one ever paid attention to that class. It degraded. They should have the proper knowledge. They also have the classes segregated between guys and girls and teaching them all the same classes at the same time. But if they integrated the classes instead of teaching four classes at a time, they could be teaching four different classes that people could choose from and have an interest in.

The way they’re running that facility in Florida is not right. It might help some people, but the way they’re doing is like brainwashing you the fact that it's okay to relapse since they can come back. The people there are not getting what they need. It’s just sad ‘cause I also do have a lot of friends that are still there. They call and tell me how bad of a time they’re having there. It makes you wanna relapse almost. I had good hopes in that place. There wasn’t a pool and a lot of other stuff like they said when trying to get us there. But it was a nice facility. They just need to pick up on their stuff 'cause they’re just reacting to problems rather than already having solutions.

When I arrived at AAC, I had the feeling that I was gonna have a panic attack. I was anxious. But it was only because I didn't get there 'till 10:00 something at night, and it felt like everything was being rushed and pushed on me. I didn't really know how to understand or cope with that part. But then after the next couple of days, it eventually started to calm down.

What's good about it is that you have staff and people behind you to help you keep building yourself up instead of tearing yourself back down. They helped with the fact that you're letting stuff off of your chest. It's unbiased opinion towards each other, like, they don't know anything about you. So, it's easier to open up. But just because you get out of recovery doesn't mean it's always gonna be the easiest thing. So, make sure that you still have that routine to keep yourself involved in something other than what you want to really be trying to do.

My experience with American Addiction Centers was great. When I arrived there, it was just about as I expected. I've been to a bunch of treatment centers before. It's about the same intake process as everyone. I really have to give a shout-out to Kayla. She's a nurse and she helped with my intake. She was really great. The staff was great too. River Oaks isn't a 12-step based program. It was different. It's the first one I've ever been to that wasn't a 12-step program, so it's very clinical. But the staff was really knowledgeable and everyone was really friendly. And as far as what they were aiming for, they definitely did a good job. I was pretty satisfied. I generally felt people cared which was good. But in the end, it's always gonna be what we do when we leave, no matter how much information we got.

My guardian called around for different facilities and there was one here, but they didn’t have any open spots. They told us about the one in Florida, which was nice-looking. I like the look of it. Also, the check-in was fast and easy. They called me a few times, but I kinda ignored it because I got back in to the place I was trying to get into, which was a separate living.

I have never been to Mississippi and was very nervous when I arrived at American Addiction Centers. But they made me feel right at home. The staff was really quite helpful and made me feel like they were there to help you. And no matter what you are going through, they’ll be there to help you. I’ve been dealing for years and they brought it to the forefront for me and I could see it. And once you see it, you could deal with it. They gave me a lot of tools and a lot of confidence in myself. The place itself was a highlight of the experience. You can sit back, relax and enjoy life because of just the setting. You can also get within yourself. With the way it’s laid out, there’s no way you can be uncomfortable there once you’ve been there for a day or so.

My first-time experience with American Addiction Centers was wonderful as well as my therapist. The staff were decent. Some were friendly and some had mood swings. The hardest three days that I had when I was there was when I was in detox. Everything else was off my shoulder and it was smooth sailing. You have your bad and good days as well as days that you’re wondering if you’re gonna make it. I was afraid to come home but once I came home, I was equipped at everything they equip you with. We were taught a lot of different things when we have cravings when we get home, when you get stressed out or the things that you go through, the reason why you go through it, and what you can do for yourself to keep that away from you. If you've been on campus and now off-campus, you need to learn how to manage with stress and with everyday living.

You need to manage with your mental illness because everyone most likely on drugs have some kind of mental illness. I wish the doctor would have diagnosed me with the different things they diagnosed me with years ago. Now that I'm on my meds, I see that the person I'm becoming and the person that I need to be, I should have been a long time ago. So, I just ask God to walk with me. I have my bad and good days, but I'm gonna continue on walking with a straight line that I need to do by any means possible.

We're not gonna say one day at a time. It's one minute at a time because I have learned that once you are an addict, you're always an addict. She's always behind you. You just have to know how to learn from her, scoot from her and get away. I learned that there are people out there a little worse than I was. I thank God that I wasn't one of the ones that's dead. So, I needed this. I'm back home and I'm learning how to cope with things a little bit better than I should have been doing years ago but I didn't.

My mom found American Addiction Centers the first time I wanted treatment. The experience was fine getting checked in. My interactions with the staff were all good. Everything was fine. The head nurse was ridiculous though, but I can't do anything about it. The only other thing was, I went to the facility at Etta and there was always something going on with the washers and dryers. So it was difficult when there were 100 people coming to use two washing machines and two dryers.

When I was checking in at Sunrise House, I was pretty drunk, and I was very agitated and a bunch of other feelings. But it was fast, fair, and no BS. They took care of me right away, so it was good. Dawn was the tech and she was amazing. She was such a sweetheart. There was a younger guy who was really good. He was one of the night techs. He was training to be a counselor too. The whole staff and all the techs were great. It was a very good experience. It was life-changing. The tools that they gave me, the knowledge about addiction and support were really good.

Their assessments were good. Lauren was my counselor and she was also amazing. If she wasn’t there, any of the other counselors were willing to help me. Isaiah and Jessie were great. Any time I had a problem or a question, they were always there to help me out, and they gave me good advice a couple of times. Once you get sober, you start to get all your feelings back and all your emotions that you haven’t had for a while, and they were very well equipped to show me to how to deal with them on my own and support of others.

I’m doing great. But I felt like I got suckered into talking to AAC. I set a boundary and told them to not call me anymore. But they still continued to text and harass me. I made a joke yesterday and told them that I got a paper cut while writing my suicide note. I never even met these people. They don’t know me, but yet, they think I’m having all these problems. I do see a therapist weekly. I’ve been sober. I’ve been doing good, and it just seems like they wanna mess with me. I don’t wanna be contacted anymore, and I told them that, and yet, they still continue to send me a text. I don’t wanna join your cult. I know they got quotas, and they probably get commissions to sign suckers like me up. I’m trying to be civil as I can, and this is the boundary. If they keep contacting me, I’m just gonna have to go to the authorities and tell them that I’m getting harassed. I don’t like them. They're scammers.

I got really depressed and I was at a low and vulnerable point in my life. I could feel they took total advantage of me and my state of vulnerability for profit or for commission. I made it clear from the beginning that I didn’t wanna take any site drugs and that I want a more holistic approach. And they were like, “Yeah, we got you.” They send me to this place, and that’s what they wanna do. They told me, “Oh, you're depressed? Take this,” and, “You’re on Percocet? Take this box.” They're just treating drugs with drugs when I didn’t wanna do anything.

They should be more clear with what you're getting into. My therapist told me, “Just go to this wellness center. Go. You’ll eat good, you’ll be surrounded with people just like you. They have a rock climbing gym.” They made it sound like I was excited to go, and that I’m gonna get better there. But when I was there, I was like, “What the hell did I just sign up for?” I was only there for seven hours. I signed up and paid a co-pay of $2500. This is a place where people are going if they have to stay out of jail. I felt really sucky. I’m not better than anybody. It was just that this wasn't for me. They made me feel worse than I felt. They stuck with me for money. I don’t think they care. They should stop acting like they care. They never met me. And yet, they still continue to bother me.

I would have a very difficult time not using any tobacco products for that length of time and American Addiction Centers was one of the only places where I could do it. This was in River Oaks in Florida, Tampa and when I arrived, it was late at night. I expected one big building like a hospital but it was not like that. It was 25 acres and five big buildings and dorms. It was not what I was expecting at all but I was very impressed. The therapists were very good and the custodian people were excellent. They were Latin American and all spoke Spanish so I couldn't understand them but everything was wonderful. The food was very good and healthy. I have no complaints at all. The place is restrictive and you can't leave but we’re very well taken care of. We're six months out and I've been very good so far but it's something I don't want ever to have to go through again. I was lucky to keep my job. I was there for 55 days and I can't do that again.

If I were running it, it could have been a little better. It's very organized. It's all group sessions mostly and occasionally, we would split up into smaller groups. Very infrequently, we would get to talk to our counselors or our therapists one-on-one. I should have taken more advantage of that and just set up appointments if I had something to talk about. There was a little bit of redundancy going on and you get tired of that but I understand why they had to do that because if you're there for a long time, it's different than somebody just arriving.

There are only so many ways you can slice and dice what you have to say so you end up repeating. The leaders of classes repeat themselves after two weeks and go back or start over again to accommodate the new arrivals. They try to organize it as best they could to get you on the progression where the people on your class are the people that have been there at the same time that you have been there. But they should have different levels so they can tell how long you’ve been there. Everything can be improved but overall, I get what they were trying to do and they did a good job of it.

I got my first DUI back in January of 2019, and I went to jail for a little bit and then got out. I went to Laguna Beach Hospital for detox. Before I was about to leave and still trying to find a rehab, my uncle informed me that there’s Laguna Treatment Center and American Addiction Center. I thought I'd give it a try so I went to Laguna Treatment Center. I really enjoyed the experience. I didn’t have any complaints. Everyone always had to complain about the staff but I enjoyed it all. The staff is really cool with me and the food was good.

The staff has a lot of knowledge to help you out. They’re also very comforting especially when it’s your first time in a rehab. They definitely made me feel like I was welcome. It took me a little bit to get going, like talk to them and get comfortable, but overall, their staff was really good. They taught me how to control my anger and emotions in chaotic situations. The main one was that they taught me how to speak up a little bit and how to vouch for myself. I’ve been using that tool ever since I’d gotten out, and it’s been working great for me. They do a perfect job. For someone that’s going in the first time, I’d tell them just take everything that the rehab teaches them. Even though it might be repetitive at times and it could be boring, just listen to it ‘cause something in there will trigger a little thing in their brains to get them going.

I had a few issues with the establishment that I went to. I was an out of pocket pay and I felt like they were trying to dupe me. There was a big mess and I realized while I was there how they were doing things that I wasn't pleased with as far as insurance was concerned. But I'm a 100 days clean today and I haven't heard from them. I'm happy with that and I just wanna go about my life.

Other than all the bad stuff, I liked the place that I went to. It's a good group of people there and they do want you to succeed. They do teach you a lot and I learned a lot about myself, coping mechanisms, and the therapists while I was there. They do a great job and I took a lot from Demetrius' class. But the whole insurance scandal rubbed me the wrong way because of the way that they were running things at that establishment. It had the potential to mess up a person's sobriety and I didn't like that at all. It's not right when you're forcing somebody to stay because you can get more money out of their insurance. The same way with holding their medication over them, saying they're not gonna get it unless they stay longer simply because they got it approved by the insurance. That was kinda what went down and I saw it on more than one occasion.

With me being a self-pay, they were keeping me in the most expensive place as long as they possibly could until I started to learn what was going on. They were also trying to withhold my discharge papers but I got out of there. I ended up getting discharged about a week and a half after I started realizing what was going on. Also, I met a lot of people there that I became friends with and the reps of American Addiction Centers would tell them that they'd be an AMA, leaving against medical advice, if they left. It was not because they were not doing well, but because American Addiction Centers could get more money out of the insurance. Even my therapist had to hold me back simply because of this whole thing and I think she would lose her job if she didn't do what she was told.

Also, they didn't do any testing when I first walked in and then they tested me. When they tested me, they tested me positive.

They came up with a story that after two days, all drugs should be out of my system. They made me leave and gave me a bag full of pills they had put me on. I talked to a doctor there for about three and a half minutes and he said that I was bipolar and put me on lithium. After leaving AAC, I went to a different rehab, they said that that wasn't true, so they took me off lithium. This wasn't a very good experience. They don't run the center very well.

I’ve been in treatment twice this year and I got myself in a bad bind. I thought my insurance would cover me back at the place that I went through in New Orleans and found out that they didn’t. I called around town to find some places and it was a five-week backlog. I was about to freak out. During that time, I got a text from American Addiction Centers. I called and they were more than helpful. They found a place and got my travel plans. It came at a great time.

The first eight days were a blur. I was withdrawing off and I just wanna put my head in the ground. They were very kind in helping the symptoms that I had. I felt like I was in good hands. I like the environment. Everybody’s at their lowest point of their life kind of thing and nobody judges because we’re all the same. I went through for quite a few days and just listening. After I got to feeling a little better, I got involved with talking about things. They kept me busy on my toes pretty much of the time and they were pretty nice and polite. I liked the counselor I had. He was pretty cool.

It was just at the end, and it was my fault. I happen to leave. I had to do something, and I left and I didn’t pay my apartment rent and the people evicted me while I was over in Tampa. So, I had to come back two days early just to be able to salvage all my belongings. But it all worked out. My belief is that either you're gonna do it or not, it’s a personal thing. I learned a lot of helpful things about coping mechanisms. I’m doing really good right now and going on 40 days sober. Overall, I’d recommend them.

American Addiction Centers was awful. I went to another rehab. I left that place. Their techs and therapists were cool. I was doing very well there. For 2 weeks everything was hunky-dory. When I went down the street to get a pack of smokes, the next morning they packed my ** up and made me leave. There was no explanation, they didn’t do nothing. They didn’t try to counsel me. I've been there because I’m an addict. I go get a pack of smokes and they throw me out to the street? The place sucked. And they dropped me off in Newark, New Jersey, the place where I used to get drugs from. I immediately called friends of mine, see what I could do and they gave me another number and I went to another rehab which was much better. It was actually a blessing getting kicked out of AAC for going to get a pack of cigarettes. I want a refund.

I've been taking meds for almost 10 years. It got to the point where I went to my doctor and I told him that I couldn't keep taking them all. It was becoming more and more, but it wasn't doing anything for the pain. My family told me that things were looking a little weird and I felt it myself. I just wanted to be done with all the **, so I went to American Addiction Centers, stayed there for two weeks and left. It didn't do anything for me though. I did a little research and then I ended up going to the American Addiction Centers in California.

The staff was fantastic but the management was going through some growing pains. They took my suitcase but didn't take any of my clothes. I coulda had paraphernalia on me and they didn't check any of that. Then, they just put me upstairs and then they started me on the weird thing, but they didn't give me an orientation or any information. I had to follow the people to know that I needed to go to classes. I just assumed I was in a hospital setting because I didn't know. Then, I found a guy who had been there three times and he had a booklet. I asked where he got it and he said it was supposed to be given to me when I checked in.

The American Addiction Centers website is old and there's no therapy dog. You're not really gonna see the psychiatrist or your psychiatrist but maybe once a week. It's alluding that you're gonna see the psychiatrist and that you can ask for them, but I asked and it took me two weeks to see one. My therapist was fantastic though. The doctor was fairly quick and didn't spend a whole lot of time with you, but the rest of the staff were super helpful.

The facility and the food were good, but there were too many people there that were just doing it to appease the courts. The program is like a revolving door. There's no A, B, C, and D like a classroom. You're mixed in with everybody. Some people have been there for 30 days and you're mixed into a class with them. A lot of what they're talking about has no relevance. Everybody's experience is different there. You've got people that were alcohol and a lot of the night classes and stuff were alcohol-related. All in all, it was a great experience. There are days when I cry from the pain that I still have, but I'm mentally happier. I'm back to being my meticulous self.

Upon arrival, I was scared 'cause I didn't know where I was going, I didn't know anybody and I'd never been out of state by myself. The behavior health aide was very helpful. I was starving, and they offered me a bag of lunch. The intake went very smoothly and it wasn't a long process at all. Some of the BTA's, however, took their job to another level to where they made it seem like they were correction officers. Sometimes they would threaten us and say, "If you don't do this, you don't go to class. You don't do this, we're gonna take your cellphone." The cellphone thing went beyond everybody's head, because they knew that that was their way of controlling what they wanted us to do. They would push people a little bit too much to make their job a little easier. They didn't want anybody in the dorm so it would be quiet. They also didn't let us tag in to their WiFi because they don't want us on social media posting pictures.

Before I left, they had it to where the cellphone use started at 4 o'clock instead of 8:00. 4 o'clock was a little bit better, but it should've been a little bit earlier because they fail to realize that a lot of us there still have lives outside of River Oaks. We have to make appointments and follow up, pay bills, do this while we're there. 8 o'clock at night, offices are closed. And a lot of people are in different time zones. So, if they wanted to talk to their children, 8 o'clock may not be their time.

Post-treatment for me was a little difficult. After I left, I had things set up on my own because of my location. They were more focused on stuff that was in Florida and down south. I live upper, so it was hard. Then, the IPOs wouldn't take me because I had private care insurance and I didn't wanna drop that in order to get into sober living. Also, a lot of the times my counselor was lazy, so I had to do my own feedback and research on myself to get to where I needed to be when I left River Oaks.

Overall, they could've had a little bit more outings for us to do. From the time that we eat dinner or dinner's over, there's nothing for us to do. There's no bingo, no games, nobody coming in to help the ladies do some nails, do something to keep your mind occupied 'cause you got that time from like 5 o'clock till lights go out at 10:00. They said you can't turn the TV on in the day room until a certain time. By the time you're getting your meds, it's time for them to turn the lights out. And they make you turn the lights out like you're a little kid. Nobody wants to go to bed at 10:00. The campus is really nice, but they lied. There's no pool, there are no horses. They had horse therapy presented in the brochure, but they didn't have that. So it's false advertisement. Nonetheless, I would go back today if I needed to. My therapist was very helpful the whole time I was there.

The treatment was really effective with the people who wanted to be there. They should give more options when it came to options after being done there. They should also provide more awareness of the discharge process. When I was notified that I got discharged, I had to find sober living and out-patient really quickly, which was a bit stressful. Also, I was charged $1,200 for medications that I didn't take, and I've been trying to resolve it for several months. I've left messages at the business office, I've tried to call my insurance and the doctor, but nobody has responded.

However, I had a good check-in experience. I came at night and it was closed, but I was greeted eventually by a nurse who did my intake for me and then checked me in. That was really nice. I had a good time with them. They were also really helpful and caring. The aesthetic was fine as well. The setting was like a hospital setting and I wouldn't say it's exactly ideal, but it's nicer than some places are. I liked the group therapist the best. The behavioral techs were cool too. I only met with my one-on-one therapies three times the entire time I was there. My case manager, I met with him three times. Some of them have a little different style, but they were doing their job of looking after us.

I felt that everyone was treated poorly, and the staff at American Addiction Centers weren't very friendly. I overheard several patients' personal information being discussed with other patients by people on the staff. That was a big thing and I thought that was really inappropriate. I didn't end up finishing my 30 days there. I'd asked to be transferred and they administratively discharged me per my request. I didn't have the best experience with it.

American Addiction Centers sucked. The best thing that came out of my visit to Nevada was that my roommate had a service dog and it did my health good, so I ended up getting a service dog. Other than that, it was not a good experience. It's not for me. While I was there, they decided to switch everything around. At one point, men were on one floor, women were on the other. They co-mingled us, which was fine. I don’t have a problem with men, but they were walking in our room.

Also, two of their people were calling me, literally harassing me. They were calling me because I refused to get on a plan. I have congestive hearth failure. I had a disability hearing a couple of weeks from when he wanted me to go to another place, and he would not take no for an answer. The the name-calling was very invasive, and they took it a step further and called my daughter. I have given up on this company. Maybe other people have had good experiences, but it was not for me.

American Addiction Centers was great. They’re very strict about some of the rules. Those applied to the kids more than to me, but I understood that they apply it across the board. The regular classes were pretty good, and some of them were excellent. They had some kind of filling stuff late in the day, and they would bring in people who had been addicted, and they’d talk to you. That got a little repetitive because it was the same thing over and over, but they wanted you to attend everything. They weren’t sticklers about it because I had a bad back and they understood that. So, I could do six a day classes, and then my back just gave out. I understand that they had to do it that way because of insurance, and also to keep the kids busy. If they didn’t keep them busy, they would be misbehaving.

I made some friends while I was there. They were kinda peers. One was an engineer and another designed golf courses. We still stay in touch and we had no relapse issues since then. My issue was I had a hip replacement and they were giving me narcotics, and finally, I just had to say, “I can't handle this.” And so, I walked away from it, which was strange because you're not supposed to be able to do that. But then, when this pain started coming back in my other hip and my shoulder, and my back, I started self-medicating with alcohol because I wasn’t gonna do the narcotics again, and it got out of hand. My situation was a little unusual. There was nothing recreational about my use.

I wasn’t happy with the art class, but almost all of the staff at American Addiction Centers was excellent. When I was kinda finishing up, I was supposed to pick two people that influenced me the most, and I picked two of the staff because one kinda guided me, and the other one would tell me when I was full of crap, which I needed. The kitchen staff and the housekeeping staff were excellent as well. I couldn’t believe that in the morning I’d walk out of the room to go to a class and I’d come back and the room would be spotless.

The food was excellent, too. The kitchen staff that I interacted with was always friendly and helpful. And I noticed that there were people with special food needs, and they’d cater to them. There was vegetarian, and he always got his own vegetarian meal at mealtime. There was a person with a gluten issue and similar thing. So, they did everything they could to accommodate you. I have no complaints with them.

American Addiction Centers was a referral from a hospital, and my experience upon arrival was very good. Upon admission, however, they told me that my insurance would not cover anything and I did not have anything to worry about there. And then, I got a $7,000 bill from them, so that was no beuno. While the nurses, doctors and counselors were very good, the BHT was substandard in every way. I let it roll off my shoulder, but it could be better. They also took me off my seizure medication and I had a seizure, which was not acceptable. Overall, I did not learn anything that I did not know. The most useful thing of the entire experience, nevertheless, was the detox. It was good.

I researched and found American Addiction Centers online. I’ve never done something like that before so, it was all new to me. It kinda felt like you were being watched and it was almost prison-like in a way. The staff would say that I was not allowed to have my phone and I would tell them that I was and that it was for work purposes. Everybody would try to get your phone or not let you talk to certain people. It was kind of a weird experience. There would be people that would have their phones all the time and then there were these people that could make a problem for them if they have their phones. You don’t just walk around trying to take someone’s stuff when at the intake, they didn’t say anything like that or take your phone privileges away. They would at least let you know but they just kinda took it on themselves. They’re trying to get something over on you.

I had a problem with the medications that were prescribed to me after I was there. Then, they took away all the prescriptions that were given by a doctor. I didn’t go there with anything but I ended up taking five different things when I was there. They then put you on this medicine and from one nurse to another, they couldn’t get their story straight. I would ask them the milligram of the medicine and the plan on tapering it down because they would administer it but would not tell you how it was gonna work the next day. They went from one day of having me at 12 milligrams, to the next not seeing that I even took 12 milligrams the day before. I didn’t understand it and they were giving me the stuff.

I had a horrible experience. American Addiction Centers didn’t follow through on anything that they said. They ended up not giving me my medication at all. And they sent me a bill for medication that I didn’t take. I had to wait a long time to talk to the doctor, and I talked to him for about 10 minutes. He said he was gonna put in an order for my prescription, and I kept asking the nurse. She kept saying, “Come back in an hour." And I haven’t heard anything from him. So I ended up just calling my mom and having her come pick me up. It was just not a good situation and I ended up leaving early. This experience has opened my eyes to the fact that this is an industry that’s strictly for money. It doesn’t seem like they really wanna help me.

I was in desperation and I sought for help on the internet, and then I found American Addiction Centers. I had a good experience with them, and the program was good. I, however, was moved three times from the room because I was snoring, and I had to sleep on the sofa for three days. I don’t think that was a legit reason and I voiced out my opinion, but it was either deal with the person that I was in there or not. I requested, “Why don’t you put me in a room by myself?" But I also know they have two beds per room.

I was only there for 10 days and so I needed to get the best out of it. So, I went and moved to a living room on the sofa at night. The reason why I slept on the sofa wasn’t because they told me to. It was because I was getting to a point of desperation of not being able to sleep good because they were waking me up at night. And, I noticed the frustration on the other person in the same room, and I didn’t want to disturb or make anything that would jeopardize our recovery. Everything else, nevertheless, was pretty good.

I didn’t interact in the first three days, so I didn’t get the full benefit of a program, but I am still sober -- I turn two months sober on the 13th. I don’t think I could have done it without going to their place. I have been in a recovery place before and it was a lot different. Based on the information part and on the professionalism, American Addiction Centers drew a line that needed to be drawn, making a difference between friendship and recovery, and that was great. They were outstanding in the areas of professionalism and courteousness.

I am writing this review to help the family of other addicts. If you are involved in a placement of your loved one in a facility please read this email. I have been in contact with the the American addiction centers head quarter in Tennessee for almost two months regarding placement of my adult son who has a court order for treatment. I specifically have had long conversation with staff member named Keana. She was well aware of my son lack of cooperation and his past attempts of leaving many treatment centers for the past 10 years. She closely followed my son case through me or by contacting the mental health facility he was treated by court order.

She with the help of other staff convinced the lock down mental health facility's social worker to release my son to their care where they can watch him closely, giving him treatment and stop him from leaving the facility. She even promised me that they can hire additional security paid by us to prevent him from leaving. She assured me if he leaves since he is under the court order they will be able to call the police. Let me tell you my son left after 3 days staying in their facility, Laguna treatment hospital in Aliso Viejo, California and none of what they had promised happened.

Upon my call to the facility I was informed that he left and they won't be able to tell me anything more. Believe me I have experienced this many times in the past but at least this time their promises regarding involvement of the police and their awareness of the court order made me to believe them. I thought this promise can at least put my son in jail rather than street to overdose.

My husband was told that we were supposed to be at American Addiction Centers at 6:00 PM. We got there on time and when we walked into the place, nobody was around. Moreover, nobody was sitting in the reception area at the office. I was standing outside and talking to residents that were staying in the rehab. And it was an hour until we finally found someone and my husband left feeling very nervous about leaving me there.

Once I was brought up on to the detox floor, I sat in the hallway for a while then got into my room. It was a little after dinner when we had gotten there, but I hadn’t eaten. I sat in my room thinking somebody was gonna come to tell me what to do. I sat there for quite a while and started to get upset. I didn’t know where anything was. Finally, I walked out to the front and asked the girl at the nurse’s station if somebody was gonna help me. I said that I was new there and asked what I was supposed to do. It was not good a good experience.

American Addiction Centers was understaffed and things were a little disorganized. We were supposed to have groups and meetings, but a lot of times, there would be nobody to do them. It would be canceled and we would just sit around. One night, in a group, there was some arguing going on with some of the staff and the residents. I was afraid somebody was gonna pick up a chair and throw it. I was scared and called my husband. While some of the staff were wonderful, others were not. But I won the day I left there. I was supposed to get clean and I got what I needed by being removed from my situation at home.

I had a very bad experience with American Addiction Centers and I am in the process of a lawsuit because of the bad service I got there. They didn’t even respond to my complaint and no one ignores lawsuits. That’s the stupidest thing you could do. But that's good. It means I might get some money. The judge could always overturn the case and he probably will.

There was a number of very bad things that American Addiction Centers did. First of all, the medical director and the only doctor that I saw in my four weeks there was not properly certified with ASAM or ABAM, which is a licensing requirement in New Jersey. I found that out afterwards. She was so bad that I went and did research in what the licensing requirements are. I looked her up on the ASAM and the ABAM websites and when I put her name in there, it said there’s no doctor with this name who’s certified. I also know she’s not because when I looked at her website on the internet, she was listed as an internist.

She’s been an internist her whole life and she’s 64 years old. She somehow took this job for a short period of time. She’s gone already but she was serving as the medical director and she didn’t know what she was doing in terms of dual diagnosis and co-occurring disorders. She was totally out of her league. They even had her taking care of a hundred patients. She had no time in her schedule. One time I asked her if she could change my depression medications. I told her that while I was there, she had to change my depression medications and then monitor me because I really needed to change that. I couldn't stop drinking if I couldn't stop the depression. She said she was gonna do it. Then a week passed and when I met with her again, I asked her what she had done and she asked me what I was talking about. I reminded her and she said she had patients one after the other all day long and I couldn't expect her to do everything she tells every patient.

When I was researching the rest of the licensing requirements, I noted at least 10 other violations that they had while I was there in terms of the number of hours of instruction a day and the number of hours of therapy a week. The number of people in the group therapy sessions was supposed to be limited to 8 but they had at least 12 in every session that I was in. When I asked for my medical records afterwards, they didn’t have any either. They didn’t keep track of me. They sent me various papers that were not medical records.

Another requirement by licensing requirements is to maintain a treatment plan. But when I asked them for my treatment plan, what they sent me was a list of things that I was supposed to do for me. It was not things that they were supposed to do for me but things that I was supposed to achieve. I don’t think that’s a treatment plan. It should be their plan for treating me. Plus when I read the licensing requirements, one of the first paragraphs was saying that these licensing requirements were written in order to maintain a minimum standard of quality care for an addiction center to provide services to their patients. These are minimum standards and American Addiction Centers failed to meet 11 of the key standards.

American Addiction Centers didn't seem to have their act in order very well there. I ended up relapsing and I was so gung-ho when I went in there too. I really thought that I was gonna stop. I was committed. I did it on my own and I stayed sober the whole time I was in there. But they didn’t give me the tools to stay sober when I got out. They did not provide any other treatment for my co-occurring disorder, the depression, which is the reason I went there. American Addiction Centers advertise themselves as being at the leading edge of dealing with dual diagnosis and co-occurring disorders.

Their CEO, Michael Cartwright, is one of the leading advocates. He basically says you can’t treat alcoholism unless you treat the underlying thing, whatever it is, whether it’s depression or anxiety. I have a serious chronic depression issue and I told them if I was gonna kick this alcohol thing, I gotta kick this chronic depression. But the doctor had no clue. You reach this point in your life when you finally make a cry for help. You're reaching out and throwing yourself on their mercy. But then you don’t get the kind of care, even the minimum standard of care in a place like this. It bursts your bubble. It takes you away from where you’re really committed and you just need some help to where you’re right back to square one again. That’s just terrible.

This doctor started working there some time in 2019. The CEO of the company started working in March of 2019. There was a press release that they issued that he is the man who was gonna lead them into the future. But both of them are already gone. So even internally, I think they realized something was all screwed up that they lost the CEO. The medical director and he didn’t even last a year. Maybe they were replaced with qualified people. But certainly, during the period of time that the doctor was in charge, nobody was being treated. And that’s a sin. That’s unethical. The place was so outta control and they didn’t care about any of the licensing requirements because they were thinking, "Who the hell is gonna catch us? All we have is a bunch of addicts coming here. They’re not gonna be smart enough to raise any questions.”

Sunrise Treatment Center was bought by a public company, American Addiction Centers, about three years ago, and like most of the time when you have a big company buy a small company, they went in and cut all costs. There was not enough therapists, class time and teachers. They didn’t even hire a doctor who was qualified to be the medical director. So in my whole time there, I did not have a qualified medical director. I don’t even know how, ethically, this woman could hold herself out to be an addiction specialist.

The nurse practitioner there, Jeff, is the nicest guy I met in the whole place. He didn’t come out and say it but he basically told me that the place was outta control, that this doctor didn't know what the heck she was doing and that he felt sorry for me. He understood what I was going through. He tried everything he could and was bending over backwards. I kept going to him behind the doctor's back, trying to get some help in some way or another. It was just a waste.

My wife hooked me up with American Addiction Centers, and everything went great. The people were on top of their stuff and my interaction with them was all good. They really have good guidelines as far as what to do to be successful once you get out there, like going to meetings and getting a sponsor. I followed the steps that were outlined for me and I'm doing well. It was a great experience.

At American Addiction Centers, the women were on the third floor and it was nice. The men were on the second floor and the first floor was where the cafeteria was. I was there for a week and a half, but I didn’t wanna stay there. I wanted to go home the minute I got there because I didn’t feel like they were really trying to help me. The staffs were weird. They didn’t try to talk to me. They didn't spent enough time in one-on-ones. They had groups, but I was so sick and couldn’t even go to the groups. I was still in detox and they were mad at me because I didn’t go to the groups. I spent a lot of time sleeping though.

Also, I just had a hip surgery and had my medicine with me since I still had to take it. They took it from me. My doctor said they should have destroyed it in front of me, but they didn’t. They just took it and I don’t know if they were supposed to do that or not. They also put me on some medication and I was shaking so bad, I could hardly fly home. But I got off of it as soon as I got home. I didn’t like American Addiction Centers very well.

My experience with American Addiction Centers was the worst I ever had. I heard about them through the 800 number in Tennessee, but it wasn’t a good deal and I’m sorry it even happened. They have so many bad things going on there that it was pathetic. I watched all kinds of things going on in there and the administration allowed it. People were receiving packages and they had people sending people in through their own families.

American Addiction Centers had a few good staff, but the majority of them were a mess. There was a horrible woman there who nobody liked. Then, there was my counselor who was great and very nice. I went there for 30 days and that was not what I signed up for. I paid good money upfront when I was there but I didn’t get anything out of it. Then, they had the nerve to send me a bill for over 16 grand. I’m not gonna pay it again and I didn’t even respond to it. I'm very dissatisfied with American Addiction Centers.

My wife has been doing research for a dual diagnosis center and came up with American Addiction Centers. I talked to someone who was in Tennessee. First, I did my detox at AdCare in Rhode Island. Then my insurance kinda surprised me and said, "We're not gonna pay for this" so I had to leave. I ended up at Sunrise House in Lafayette, New Jersey a year ago and the detox was slow but it was an overall good experience. Almost all the staff really cares.

The problem is they're understaffed for just about every position. Also, there were some issues when I left this last time. This last summer, I left a whole list of things they could do that were low-hanging fruit to make the place more handicapped-friendly. We had a lady there with only one leg and in a chair. She couldn't even get her chair into the bathroom. She was on the first floor. There were steps in every direction which could easily be solved with a temporary ramp that you can put around the corner and hang up, pull it out when you get somebody with a wheelchair. There was a lot of stuff. I gave it to the CEO and to the doctor there. I've worked at a social service agency, and my job was with facilities' safety and I was the fleet manager so I kinda knew what I was looking for. Otherwise, it was good.

The one complaint that I heard continuously from people there was that their brochures and the stuff their website tends to play up are the swimming pools and all of those things but they didn't have one. But I wasn't looking for that. I was looking for recovery. And on that basis, I thought the classes were good. When I was there last year, there was one staff member that was since been gone, that I thought was not quite up to it. He's very repetitive. And what he wrote had turned into stories about him. But he's no longer there, so that's water under the bridge.

And this last time I was there, there was quite a bit of contraband drugs getting onto the floor. The people were somehow managing to not take their medications they were given and then selling them to other people, or there's somebody who is getting them in from outside. Have a friend come up and drop a bag off behind a tree, that sort of thing, which is always a possibility. People were able to get a bunch of things. But I recommended the facility to other people. It has a very institutional feeling that makes it not very welcoming but the staff is good and the rooms were okay. The food is good, too.

I've done detoxing before and by far, the worst experience I've ever had was with American Addiction Centers. They were the first one that popped up when I looked online and when I called, the people lied entirely about what the facility I was heading to was gonna be like. There were a couple of people at the Sunrise House that were okay, but it was a really weird time. They were going from private to non-profit and they were switching management so they were extremely short-staffed.

There was a whole floor of people detoxing but the staff did not have a proper attitude and were unprofessional. It was stressful. Moreover, there were multiple days when there was literally nobody on the floor to monitor the detox patients. They were really confrontational too. They lost my phone and then tried telling me that I was lying to them. They told me that I must have had it on me and then they tried telling me that it was never logged in and that I never brought one in. The lady was very confrontational about it and I probably didn’t handle it very well, but I was detoxing.

Upon arrival at American Addiction Center, it was a complete chaos and unorganized. It was a completely terrible experience. I was told that I could have my phone, but as soon as I got there, they asked for my phone. I was already withdrawn and they told me that. I was bound to be irritated. Then the lady tells me to give them my phone or to go back to the airport and go home, which threw me off. They were supposed to help me, but they were talking about hurrying up so I could go home. So, an altercation ended up happening at that point and I got kicked out.

They got a disrespectful little kid who keeps the room in order. We were supposed to be in our rooms, but I fell asleep on the couch out in the main living area. No one woke me up so I didn't get to take my morning meds. And it was my third day coming off the meds, so I was still withdrawing. When I woke up, one of the behavioral health technicians started laughing. I walked up to him and I asked if something was funny. He said that I was funny the way I fell asleep on the couch. Before I could even think about it, I slapped him and they pressed charges. You don’t let kids who are still trying to learn to deal with their emotions be in charge of a group of men that are literally withdrawn and going through a hard time.

They had also purposely taken me to the hospital under the Baker Act. I did nothing that would put me under the Baker Act in Florida, where the hospital could keep me for 72 hours if the doctor says so. The lady said that I needed to go to the hospital because I was acting crazy. As soon as I got there, the doctor said that I was good and should go home. I told him that I was not going home and that I'd be going to another rehab to get clean. I stayed in Tampa for a night and had to go get a hotel. I also had to go through the whole process to get a whole new room. Then I had to go fly out to Vegas to go to the rehab center there. We were allowed to have phones there.

The call center gets paid a commission when someone goes through the program. It makes sense why the guy was trying so hard to get me on to the next flight. Some places allow phones, but they tell everyone to bring their phones. Once I get to Vegas, I said I needed the clothes I left in Tampa. They said that there were no clothes in my closet. It was all missing. I lost hundreds of dollars, including the money I put on my account. I put $80 on my account and they never gave it back. They said that they would send me a check or refund it to my account, but they never did. It’s one of the worst places around.

The second facility was way more organized because it was the owner’s baby. It is the flagship and he treats that one a little differently. However, they didn't do anything but detox me. They were great at that, but as far as the program went, it was absolutely terrible. I came home and figured out how to succeed myself. Don’t go to American Addiction Centers.

I would never ever go through American Addiction Centers or the treatment center that I went to. I went to the Laguna Treatment Hospital and one other place, and I got them off of the same website. To any addict in this world, don’t go to their website. It's all the same company and I wouldn’t recommend them at all. I went there with the promise of what they were gonna do and in both of them, it was like putting myself in jail. It was due to the lack of care and the interaction with the staff. I'm even having to do bankruptcy because of all of this.

I had three years of sobriety and I got that result from going to Ogden Regional. I had been there three times. But I figured I couldn't keep going to the same place. I decided to try something new so I sought out to these places because I thought my insurance would cover it. But my insurance didn’t really cover it as I thought. What was interesting too was that they promised me these things – that they were gonna take care of me and that they would pick me up at the airport. But they overrun their facility so much with so many patients that they can't really take care of them. Not all nurses were bad but the overall running of the hospitals was.

Everything is all nice in the beginning. They pick you up at the airport and go through the motions. Once I got there, they followed a procedure like when I had gone in to Ogden Regional. They take your stuff, show you your room and try to take care of you. But as far as far as providing for you and trying to help you with your detox, medication and care, American Addiction Centers dropped the ball. They just have too many people and they're understaffed. The center runs so largely that the staffs they're hiring are not truly involved with trying to help.

I felt like I was on my own. They were just giving me a bed while they charge me or my insurance. They were not helping me. It would have been easier for me to detox at home, sleep on the couch, watch TV and try to take care of myself than to rely on them. They also don’t let you make phone calls unless it's at a certain time that they determined. To try to get myself out of the New Jersey center, I went through about nine hours of counseling with two different counselors because all they do is constantly battle with you. They wanna keep you there so that they can make money, not to get you the treatment. In the end, they worked out a deal with me and gave me a ride back to the airport. They said they were gonna bill me and I said that was fine but that I was out of there. I had credit towards another plane ticket then I had to get my mom to pay for the rest of the portion of the plane ticket and I was able to get home.

But my experience in the Laguna location was the most terrifying I have ever had. I went there and they had the same procedures as the one in New Jersey. So they stick to their policies. But when I asked to leave, they said I can't. If I was court-ordered there or if I was a dug addict, I'd be concerned. But I'm just an alcoholic. There are different ways of treating different addictions. But they treated me like a prisoner. That one took an overnight stay to try to get me out of there. They still gave me that Uber ride from the airport to the hospital. When I tried to leave, they said they would get me a ride to the airport too. I sat in their lobby after I finally signed out everything and I was ready to check out. But they had a couple of drivers go by and I never ended up with those drivers. I ended up walking five miles to a payphone and called my mom. She paid for an Uber and an airline ticket to get me out of there.

I also took a solar panel charger for electronics that was worth over 100 dollars. I had a mini iPad from my AT&T phone service, which was another $400. But when I checked out, they disappeared. I called back and filed a complaint to Lost and Found but they said they didn't have records of who else ever had it. Every time I signed out of the two hospitals, they had my stuff on a checklist. On this one, they had my stuff on the checklist but they denied that my stuff was ever stolen. I'd never heard back from them at all after that either.

My parents found American Addiction Centers for me because I was incapacitated and I ended up going there. I’ve only had positive, good recovering experiences through them and they provided excellent service. They were always concerned about your health and how you were doing. They also wanted to make sure that you were always in a good space and they pretty much provide anything and everything you need. So, I was able to move on from a negative space in my life and learn how to function properly.

I had no positivity and I didn't have a will for trying but they provided everything, tool-wise and all that, that you need to move on from that point forward. They also provided aftercare. They were absolutely wonderful and great. I really loved it. American Addiction Centers was one of the best places I’ve ever been, and I have been to multiple places. Laguna Treatment Center was where I had gone and that’s the one that was through American Addiction Centers. They were just top-notch.

I was gonna go to one of the other centers but they were not a medical facility like American Addiction Centers, so I went there but their clientele base is a bunch of spoiled, rotten brats who doesn’t appreciate what they got. Most of them were never gonna get any help and they acted like it was a jail. The other ones were lucky they were getting that opportunity and they were very disrespectful to the staff and I didn’t like that. I was a private pay and it’s hard to mix somebody like me with people like that. The office staff was very good and the nurses were good. The directors are doing a decent deal, and I came there because of doctor’s prescribed medication and I wanted it stopped. I paid them for a month and left in a week.

American Addiction Centers can’t pick the perfect clientele but they should be able to separate them. They have facilities that they could split the sides because some of those guys belong to jail facilities rather than the rehab facility. They’ve got a good facility and I would recommend them over dealing with those people in the Malibu Beach and seriously wanna get off medication.

One of my partners is an alcoholic and I had to go over to American Addiction Centers to help him because he was hallucinating. He couldn't speak to the intake counselor very well because of his condition, so I handled it and I spoke to the counselor quite a bit in two days. She referred me for a scholarship. I got extremely wasted and went there, and it was fine. The people seemed nice enough. I was okay for a couple of days with the system but there were a lot of things that happened there and I ended up leaving early because I could not handle it. The staff members and a lot of the clinical staff members were not taking care of the clients like they should.

I told the counseling staff that my partner was most likely gonna pass that night and I needed to keep my phone. They talked amongst themselves and decided that I was not keeping my phone, so I did not give it back. I told them it was my personal property and I was keeping my phone but they refused to let me keep it when my partner was dying, and he did die that night. So, I kept my phone the entire rest of the time because I not happy with the situation and I needed it to talk to family members.

Before my partner passed, a young girl who was about 21 years old was in there. The fire alarm went off at five in the morning. One of the clients pulled it, so we all had to go out front. I was already awake and I went outside and the girl passed out. So, they took her to the ER. I came in and saw her sitting in a wheelchair. I told her she passed out and asked what was going on, She said that she felt like she had an elephant on her chest. The echo tech that was there told her she had a blood clot in her heart, which she was not allowed to tell her in the first place. I asked her to describe the procedure that they actually did to her. She describe an echo and an EKG so, I know what she was saying was correct, because she had no idea what it was. She didn't even know that it was dangerous.

She was sitting in front of the doctor's office telling me this so when it was her turn to go in, I asked her if I could speak on her behalf and she said yes because she was scared, in pain and in a wheelchair. So, I walked in with her and said that mostly likely, what she was dealing with was a pulmonary embolism and it could kill her. The doctor tried to scoot around what I was saying because I'm just a drunk and I'm in there or whatever they think I am. So, I probably got disregarded by him. I talked to the girl later and she was up and walking around. I could tell she was pale and I tried to advocate to a counselor that told us to advocate for the other clients there but she was rude to me and the person who told me to advocate walked away from me. I went back to the doctor's room by myself and he said he ordered a vascular test on her, which wasn't gonna do anything.

I was worried sick about this girl and the facility was telling her parents that she was lying about everything, and she didn't go to the hospital. The girl was crying and trying to leave there because she was sick as hell and she was getting ready to get on a plane. Her parents ended up believing her finally and let her leave. Her sister came and picked her up, and supposedly, they were gonna go to the cardiologist.

Another girl was on detox and she has detoxed multiple times before. She was completely normal when she came in then she started having seizures, and the medical staff was not doing anything about it. They kept her on the same medication when she needed to be on a different one. Eventually, she could hardly move and I am convinced that poor girl had multiple strokes while she was in there because she was given the improper medication. Another girl was throwing up all night long and they would not help her. They told her not to throw up in the nurse's trash can and she needed to go to her room to throw up.

I went to the Granbury, Texas location and I stayed through my partner's test to try to get better but I couldn't stay there because of the way that the staff members were. I was stuttering and having a hard time forming sentences. My brain wasn't connecting with my mouth and they weren't giving me the proper medication. I kept telling them this and nobody was doing anything. The only time they wanted to do something was after I told them I was gonna leave. The clients were taking care of each other because the staff wasn't. I got my eyes rolled at and I overheard two nurses saying that I was drug-seeking, when all I wanted was to feel normal. So, I went to the head nurse and I told her exactly what happened. I have never in my life experienced such neglectful staff members. There were a couple who were trying to do the job just best of their ability but there were others that were not and didn’t care.

The techs agreed with me on multiple things that I have said and I had my therapist apologize to me. When I told her about what was going on, she put her head down and she agreed with me about the staff. She couldn't even look at me after that because it was that crazy. Every day there was a code blue. There were too many of us and too little of them. Everybody was being neglected. I ended up relocating. I talked to one of the doctors that I actually like. She got on the phone in the room with me on the day that I left and said that we needed to do something about this now. She was one of the good ones and when my partner passed, she hugged me like she meant it. No one else in that place did. I was a person to her and I wasn't just a druggie or drunk.

Therapist Emily’s groups were irrelevant to recovery and seemed like a huge waste of time. Most of the staff were very rude and unprofessional. I can’t believe I wasted so much money to go there and got NOTHING out of the program. People are not treated equally at Laguna. The facility itself is not worried about patients recovery, but instead only worried about their numbers and revenue. I am beyond disappointed, and will not only never recommend this facility, but will also encourage people NOT to even bother because bc it’s a big scamming money scheme and an even bigger waste of time.

It kind of wasn’t a good experience. American Addiction will not accept me after that. So I was fed up there with that going on. Whenever I called, I said I couldn’t go to Vegas or Texas because I’ve lived in both the states. They said those are the only treatment facilities they’d allow me to go to. And it’s kind of set up for failure from that point, too. I can get drugs in both the states.Overall, the experience wasn’t too great because of the whole situation. It wasn’t really the treatment center’s fault. And the staff was very friendly and very professional. They were willing to help out as much as they could.

I had a great experience at American Addiction Center. The counselors were well-versed in what people needed and they treated me with respect. Though there was a bit of confusion on the part of the staff members since when I got there, they had a changeover in staff, everything worked out great. The counselors were more than willing to work with us, even though we weren’t in their groups and I’m still in contact with a couple of them. I had one person that really stood out amongst all the people that I had down there and she helped me through a lot of what I was going through. I’ve been through programs before and those are nothing compared to that AAC's. It wasn't like a boot camp as theirs was more open and welcoming.

I’ve called one of the 800 numbers that’s associated with American Addiction Centers and was connected to their call center. When I arrived at the facility in Grand Prairie, I wasn't impressed. The appearance was mediocre. Considering what I’d signed up for, I thought it would be more accommodating. It was almost like I was checking in to a correctional facility. In some regards, the appearance of the staff was unprofessional. But they were empathetic and understanding. Also, the residential facility was better than expected.

It would be a good idea for American Addiction Centers in their intake facilities to have some of their peer leaders to be present when someone first arrives. The staff is very clinical and during the whole intake process, you’re just sitting there signing paper after paper after paper electronically without having the opportunity to read it, or understand it, or comprehend it. It was too intense, given the circumstances. I didn’t come there intoxicated, but there were people that were very intoxicated upon my arrival. I can’t imagine what it was like for them. It was almost like shock treatment as far as the initial environment with the intake.

I moved pretty quickly through the process. It was an emphasis on being in detox, which I had already done. So there was no fluidity between the facility that I’ve been before and what they were trying to do, which initially was more about money than patient care. But I appreciate the treatment, and I learned a lot there, mainly because of the staff. They have very excellent, sharing staff, but the corporation and their emphasis on propertizing treatment is despicable.

A lot of the practices are unethical and borderline illegal with the way they pushed pharmaceuticals to some of those young folks that come in there. They put everybody on **. But I refused to take any pharmaceuticals when I was there. Even though I haven’t been there in a while, I’ve always considered filing some sort of complaint or grievance with the Texas Board of Health, or whatever governs that facility. The treatment, and especially chemical dependency or substance abuse, shouldn’t be driven by a profit margin. It should be driven by taking care of people and making sure that they’re okay when they leave.

I was searching online to try to find a place that I could go to, and I found American Addiction Centers. I was kind of drunk and high. And upon arrival at American Addiction Centers, my experience seemed like rehearsed. They tell everybody the same things when they come in. It was really boring for me. I have a problem with people believing that mental issues are a real thing, but then they turn around and deny you of some of your medications because they don’t agree with them. I understand people abuse their medicine. I never have, but you’re being monitored there. So, it’s not like you can take a handful of pills. They give it to you. I was angry about something and I was bored out of my mind because all I could do is eat, and they have one TV. And I saw a couple of girls and they had seemed really cool. But the way that they stared at me is like, “Oh, great. New girl.” So I left off partying, and I got drunk.

I drank a whole bottle of Chardonnay in less than 10 minutes. And when I came back, they wanted to search me, and I had some of my anxiety medication quarantined on me that I’m prescribed. I was being selfish, and I didn’t want someone to take it because if they took it, I knew they would just destroy it. So I was like, ”I’m just gonna take some,” and I ended up overdosing and like getting kicked out. So I feel kind of disappointed in myself. I don’t think it should be a drug because I don’t abuse it, but they say it is. If some bring these drugs or something to detox or rehab, they obviously need a lot more help. And to pick somebody out like that makes me feel very sad. Those are the people that need this the most and they’re like giving up on them. They gave up on me like twice, and I just give up on myself.

American Addiction Centers sent me to Recovery First, a detox and rehab center. But before, it’s used to be called Recovery Place and that was the first rehab I ever went to in my life. When I was 18, I was court-ordered by my parents. They were really nice. I was court-ordered to the 30-day treatment center. But I stayed and did the halfway house program, and I had clean friends which I wasn’t used to having. And then all of a sudden, my roommate said I was throwing up in the bathroom after I eat. And there was no way she could’ve known. She later on apologized. But the center wanted to send me off to an eating disorder program. And I told them I didn’t need it and that I wasn't going. So they kicked me out on the streets of Florida with two big backpacks full of my stuff, which I don’t have anymore. I just kept stuffing it up at different places because it was too heavy to carry.

My experience at American Addiction Centers was terrible. When I went over to New Jersey, the staff there was very condescending and very unprofessional. They seemed like they didn’t care. And I wrote a couple of grievances, and nobody ever addressed those. Tim, which is the Director, and Dr. ** were the only ones that were helping me out. So I wound up graduating the program, and when I left, the discharge planners failed to give me the next level of care. And I left because my insurance company cut me off.

I went back out to the streets with no after-care. And it’s no excuse. I could’ve went to meetings. But I had a fall and I reached to Dr. **. And then American Addiction Centers contacted me back. They got me a plane ticket to come down to Florida. I got on the plane and came down here, and then my insurance wasn’t accepted here. That also set me off. I wish it would’ve been different.

American Addiction Centers didn’t equip me with anything. After they saw that I came down there and my insurance wasn’t accepted, they gave me a scholarship. There was a guy that was with me in New Jersey and he came down to the program, and because I knew him and I was always around him, he got high and I was implicated with that. They kicked me out and him, too. I had nothing to do with that. So I was saying to myself, “Maybe they kicked me out because they gave me a scholarship and they didn’t want to continue to give me a scholarship.” So I went back out to the streets again, and another program took me up, Beachcomber, and they built me up because I was broken. I’m on IOP, and I’m doing great now. I’m in a sober house here.

I was at Recovery First for six weeks and it was my second time in the outpatient program. I was there in 2018 as well and from last year to this year, they've improved their technology. However, my experiences are completely different the way it was operated and if there’s anything that can be done, there should be some improvements. It wasn't repetitive last year. This year, the staff went over the same material a lot of times and I can understand that because not all of us came in at the same time. If they thought the material was important, they would want the new person coming in to get that information. For example, on week two, we discussed relapse prevention. On week four, it might be relapse prevention again. It’s not anyone’s fault and I’m not blaming anybody, but maybe with the director being out on sick leave, there just wasn’t a lot of structure.

The main director also does a lot of the addiction portion of the sessions, and I lost out on that one. The other therapists do the therapy part and when I first went there, I was told that I would get to meet with the therapist for one hour a week. However, every week when I would get to meet with a therapist, it would be 10 to 15 minutes. I think part of the reason was because the director was splitting up with the other two therapists to meet with us and since she was out, the therapists had to take on her load of people. I was a self-pay because Recovery First did not accept my insurance, so I spent a lot of money out-of-pocket. If they are telling me that I’m gonna get one hour of therapy a week, I would expect it.

Another thing is that I filled out a packet and I should have received a copy. When I filled it out, I was very clear that I was self-pay. I did not indicate any insurance company because I have a different health insurance now from last year. I gave them my credit card and I signed off an authorization that my credit card could be billed every week. Still, they billed my old insurance, AvMed, and I got a bill from AvMed. It’s a huge problem because it’s over $1,000 I owe. Other than that, I had a positive experience. The therapists were wonderful and informative. I’m also going on three months and so far, I haven’t relapsed, so that’s a plus. I got something out of my experience, so I’m grateful for that.

She was very rude and I had to go to the CEO about her. Otherwise, the staff was overwhelming. Actually, the gentleman who gave me the orientation and showed me around was a great man. I was referred by the VA to American Addiction Centers and I was absolutely lied to on every point. While in processing, I was assured that they had a wonderful legal team that would assist me, that I would be helped in finding housing, and that it was there for dual diagnosis, PTSD as well as substance. On all of those points, they were absolute lies. They straight told me all of these lies and said this, that and the other was available, and it was not.

I have spoken to them multiple times on this. I have multiple emails between me and my case manager at the VA in New Orleans about these differences between what they said we were gonna get. There used to be a pool at the residential and there is one at PHP, but the VA doesn’t cover PHP. The website says that there’s a serenity chair. There is one and it is in the detox location’s group room which you are not allowed to enter unless there’s a group. It said there was a full gym. That gym wasn’t up and working for two weeks until after I got there.

How are they false advertising all of these amenities? There was no WiFi at the residential. There was a network that said AAC Guest, but because everybody in the facility, like the techs, were using it, we weren’t allowed to use it. Because I’m tech minded, what I ended up doing is I took on the responsibility to be the editor-in-chief of the newsletter in order to gain access to the main computer, pinging the router and get the password. Even though I had the password, I was in a house which is the top and furthest out from the office. I couldn’t even pick up service there because the place is built like a damn bunker.

I’ve had a balance of $100 and something in limbo. It was supposed to go back on my mom’s card, but they’re still holding it. It probably went towards my plane ticket, but they need to tell my mom something. They were taking money out of people’s personal accounts to apply to their RX accounts, leaving them without cigarettes. And we had a bunch of pissed off addicts up in there. We had three people leave for that very reason.

Ryan and I halted all flow from New Orleans in Veterans to this place. If I didn’t have Ryan to hold me back the whole time I was there, I don’t know if I would’ve made it. He and I stood side by side and kept everything five by five. We didn’t get paid outings for about a month until Ryan jumped in, took over his peer leader and said, “Look, this is what we were promised.” Then it started being, “Oh, we’ll go to the beach and we’ll buy for everybody, but y’all have to cook it.” Three times I did the barbecue as a cookout. One time, it was frozen hotdogs and hamburgers. We didn’t even get buns, we got sliced bread to put it on.

But the group facilitators were amazing. Steve is recovering addict and he knows the struggles. Vanessa has a family around her that are all recovering addicts, and she’s extremely knowledgeable. As for the staff, I’ve got a list of the ones that are awesome, the ones that do the bare minimum, do their job, but at least are consistent, and the ones that are terrible. They do nothing but sit around and play on their phones and eat fried chicken.

Tess is infuriating because she uses the Socratic method of therapy. She will keep asking questions to box you into a corner so small until you think your own way out, which I appreciate, and it helps. She does her job well. It's infuriating but it's logical. I totally understand it because I read the principles of psychology at age 12. I understand that it’s the Socratic method, but Socrates was the gadfly of Athens ‘cause he was just so infuriating. He assumed you know nothing and would ask you questions on the most basic of things but it was to box you into a corner. He gets you to realize your own fallacy.

Danny is more hands on. He has a tactical approach to it where he identifies the problem and then attacks that problem until you realize that it’s pointless to worry about. So both of the therapists have their own style which is fantastic. Most of the people that I was there with preferred Danny’s style just because of the way he does it.

Mary Lisa and Tess were very professional but it seemed like everything I said to them was approached a little too professionally. They were disconnected like they had no investment in it. It was just like I’m sitting here raising valid points and they’re just, “Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.” There wasn’t a conversation there. There was just me throwing all of this information out and not really too much was ever done about it.

I've been to the ACC program twice and the only reason why I went back the second time was because of the therapist that I had. I wouldn't be sober today if it weren't for that. My therapist was the absolute best therapist I ever had in the world. I loved it at AAC. Admissions was a little intimidating. There was a lot of paperwork and I have been to other facilities so a lot of paperwork was a lot. But aside from that, they had a great staff and a great clinical team. It was a really down-to-earth facility that I went to at Recovery First in Hollywood and there would be times where we'd go to an outside meeting. This one meeting was where a really close friend of mine died at so they knew it was bothersome to me and we never went back while I was there. It was on another level of care.

When I first got there though and I was moving into residential, one of the techs had just gotten fired. There was an incident while I was there on Christmas. With all the drama stirred up, this tech that had gotten fired. I guess she stirred up a bunch of stuff with the clients. She was telling some people with kids that they didn't love their kids. So that was a little hectic. But that doesn't reflect AAC as a whole. It reflects her.

But within the first two days, a ton of designer stuff and some of my personal properties stored with the techs in safekeeping went missing. The only way that it could've gone missing was through the access of a tech. A $200 perfume was stolen and it had disappeared right when all this happened with this tech and that was the last night that she ever came. I tried to file in for a grievance and a complaint form for it. I would never put any of the techs that are still there accountable but nothing was ever done about it either. I was still disappointed that something was taken like that. I had to continuously file the complaint. Then finally, clinical came back from higher-ups, and I guess they just said that I never had a perfume. So that was a little bothersome. That was the only thing that I wasn't so fond of. But that doesn't even reflect the good times that I had in treatment. So I weighed the good with the bad, and that doesn't even touch the good.

With the way the clinical is set up with the AAC, it definitely keeps you busy. But sometimes, it can be repetitive. Still, the experience was really nice. In a lot of rehabs, you don't have your phone and this and that. But with AAC, you still have that little bit of freedom where you can still have that self-care. You can go to a Walmart, pick up your food and cook it at night. So you still have that sense of responsibility and I enjoyed that.

Upon arrival at American Addiction Centers, everything was okay. There were some surprises on a lot of the things that has been told on the telephone by the different people I spoke to. It has been explained to me that it was more of an executive treatment center. I told them I had this court thing coming up in my divorce, and they said it was no big deal and that I could leave that day and come back. They made it sound a little laxer and it turned out that my family wasn’t even gonna get to come and see me unless they went through this four-hour class. My dad is 83 years old and I can’t ask them to sit through a class like that.

I had tons of interaction the first few days when I was hurting and so, that was disruptive. It all seemed unnecessary to be put through all of that while I was trying to get steady. They were pushing me to get to classes in those first few days when they had me on medication that was helping me to withdraw and when I told them that I needed to sleep because of the withdrawal medicine, they just reduced my medication without consulting me and ended up putting me back into serious withdrawal.

The treatment center I went to back in ’85 didn’t have as many people and so, we had two classes in the morning, a couple in the afternoons and then, we went to AA meetings. Here, they had us making seven classes a day and the class was really large. We weren’t walking out of that class with anything. I’ve done a lot of step studies and stuff over the years and maybe someone who has never been sober get more out of it. There were several people back in there that had already gone through and they were drunk within days to a couple of weeks after they left. A part of that is due to the fact that there were no real AA meetings. They have some people come in in the afternoon every day and it wasn’t an AA meeting. They would just preach to us out of the first part of the book, like the doctor’s opinion. They all come from groups and they all were preaching from the same theory. We didn't get to experience AA in there.

Just from being sober for 28 years and as someone that made meetings every day, sometimes several times a day, I kinda have an idea of what people need and this just wasn’t hitting it in any area. They also said they were efficient and effective. They had two pools and a sauna and workouts but this stuff was not inclusive in any kind of class time. They kept our days full of classes that offered little to nothing and then exercising or an hour to enjoy yourself, swimming or something, weren’t even available. You had to do those things on your off-time, and there wasn't any off-time unless you want to get up at 5:00 in the morning.

The facility and the people at American Addiction Centers impressed me but it did go downhill while I was there. The place got overcrowded. They were at max capacity and they were feeding us with plastic plates and plastic silverware. We started out with china and silverware and cloth napkins. And before you know it, we were eating off a plastic and we were trying to cut steak and lamb with plastic knives and forks, and cutting right through the foam plates. They attempted to make things better after I complained to the CEO.

There were a few issues that I had problems with and they started dealing with some of them right away. Within a week or so, things started to improve. They made a conscious effort to improve things. But they don't do dishes overnight there so in the morning, we were eating off a foam again. They should hire somebody at minimum wage to wash dishes at night. But in the long run, everything was very good there. The staff was great and so was their approach. I've been to other rehabs. I've been to what's known as the rehab of rehabs, Hazelden, and their approach there was a little different. I really like the approach that they did there at American Addiction Centers in Dallas. I learned a lot. Hopefully, this is the last time I go to one.

I got put in the same bracket as a bunch of teen opiate kids.

I'm a complicated case 'cause I'm an atheist. Requiring a god to get better is demonstrably false in many circumstances. I understand the literature and how many people benefit from this and I know that American Addiction Centers are trying to help more as opposed to the few, but if they could please incorporate smart recovery and some other secular ideology into this program, they'd be able to benefit others.

The experience at American Addiction Centers was fine. I relapsed and in doing so, I did some heavy damage to my body. I already had cirrhosis so I ended up in ICU for a week. I’ve been back on track again and haven’t had anything to drink in over a month. It would probably work out well for most people too.

I checked in with American Addiction Centers after the hospital I was in told me that they had that open. The check-in was good. Everybody was really nice when I got there and they made it easy. My counselor, Anthony, was great and the classes were really helpful. However, the longer I stayed in the facility, I started noticing a few things. The rooms were nice but they didn't get cleaned very often. The water was always cold and when you're detoxing, that makes it the absolute worst because your outlet is in the shower. Then, some of the people who were working there were too young, very rude, and wasn't experienced with the treatment that they were providing.

It was also really easy to sneak things in and out of the facility and it made me uncomfortable. When some people get a visit, the staff wouldn't check baby bags and so there were some people who got high. The staff knew about that, but they didn't wanna deal with it right then and there and put it all off. They took notice if you’re late for class, but the very serious matters, they didn't. Also, I'm from Kentucky and I didn't get visits. When you’re not getting visits while the other ones are taking advantage of it, it's just rude. Then, my discharge plan got put off until the very end. I've already left and I'm doing really well now.

A family member recommended American Addiction Centers to me and when I arrived at the Sunrise treatment facility, they were very disorganized. The inspection of my luggage took nine hours then they told me I had a counseling appointment at 1 o’clock on Tuesday but I didn’t have it until 3 o’clock on Wednesday. Also, one person would tell me that I could do this then somebody else would tell me I couldn't. But most of the people there were very friendly and they were nice people who cared about helping the patients. I didn’t stay the full length but I got out of there feeling a lot better about the situation than I was when I went in, so their program helped. I never thought I'd go to a rehab facility so it was a wake up call for me. It's been over a month now since I left there so I've been doing very well.

But AAC could make some more sessions and work on having some recreation time then have it monitored. They have a gym, ping pong, and shuffleboard, but no one ever got to use them because no one had enough time in the little breaks to do those stuff. The group did almost everything as a whole, except for the counseling, and if they made the breaks in between the lectures and sessions shorter, it would free up 45 minutes and people can have a little bit of free time to use the gym. I know people who were there for the whole month and they never got to use the gym because the time they were supposed to use at the gym was also the time they could use the phone, and people wanted to be able to call their loved ones and tell them they were okay.

My mom dropped me off at one of the American Addiction Centers and I was there for around nine days, but I left early because I had to go back to work. The people were very nice. I didn’t ask a lot of questions when I initially did the intake and my counter ended up calling Susan on the phone. I was in the office and I started asking her questions. Susan was the reason I ended up going.

However, AAC is mismanaged. It was a mess even for me to get a letter out to my employer. Usually, you sit down with your counselor. They have a template that they use and they type the names in, then they send it. You sign a release and it takes eight minutes. At AAC, they told me it was gonna take nine days to get a letter out to my employer and I've never heard of that in my life. I shouldn't be stressing about that while I am at rehab. They told me that it had to go through their corporate office in Tennessee or Georgia. At that point, we had our cellphone, so I just contacted my employer and let them know what was going on.

The staff and the groups were good. I could talk to them. From my experience, they have the self-advocates, so I always do that and things get done, but everyone is underpaid and overworked. They had two people doing discharge planning for a whole bunch of people and it was crazy. There should also be eight people writing the letters, but there was just one that time and they were billing my insurance company the same. They were really understaffed and it was frustrating. There was a woman who came in on prescription medication and she was trying to get off alcohol, but they wouldn't take her off the prescription medication because she had been on it for about a decade. And on her discharge planning, they weren’t getting her set up with a prescription medication doctor outside. That was scary.

Taking attendance was so ridiculous. They took attendance every two minutes and I've never seen that either. It was for legal purposes, but there was a better way to go about it. I had a counselor there and he was very nice. I am gay and I am totally comfortable with myself, but he sat me down and said, "It's okay that you're gay. We're all sinners. Sinners sin." It was so weird and really awkward. If I wasn’t leaving, I would've been totally uncomfortable after that and I probably would've requested a change of counselor if I were to speak with him about other things. Nonetheless, I am clean today.

Upon arrival at Sunrise House, my experience was fine. But everything else was a mess. They kicked me out at midnight and made me walk to a quick check and figure out my life there. They thought I stole a vape from somebody but I didn't steal anything. They got my side of the story, but they weren't listening to me. On top of that, I was out without my meds for a week because they wouldn't send them back and it took them forever to send everything back including my clothes. None of the staff did anything.

I've read about American Addiction Centers online and I decided to go there. However, upon my arrival at the center at River Oaks, they right off the muscle violated HIPAA when a girl strip searched me. And it happened with everybody, not just me, so they obviously always violate HIPAA. Also, the supposed number one psychotherapist in the country literally told me to leave and relapse off my medication and that he wasn't gonna help me. I wasn't asking for any meds or any narcotics. I have really bad anxiety, so I was asking for something long-term that I can take that will be safe, not so because I wanted to get off my drug.

I was not messed up at that time. That was the 15th day and I told them that they weren't helping me. I wasn't getting the help that I needed. I already had two procedures because I wasn't tapered off the drug correctly. I've been taking medication for seven years and they expected me to just come in and be fine, but that was not okay with my medication. They would not work with me on my medicine. They gave me and my roommate food poisoning as well from their food. We found bones in our meals and it wasn't a meal that was supposed to have bones in it. They were beef chips and you never get beef with bones. It was a really bad experience and I did not like River Oaks one bit. I left American Addiction Centers and I am not with them anymore.

I switched out to the Employee Assistance Program through my job and they reached out to American Addiction Centers. Personally, my experience upon arrival there was a little nerve-wracking. It was the first time that I went into treatment, so it was a little uncomfortable at first, but the staff was welcoming and those feelings shortly went away. The staff members were very professional, understanding and accommodating.

I was taking the experience very seriously, jotting down a lot of notes, and trying to absorb as much information as I could. I learned a lot there, from the staff and some other patients as well. I learned about addictive behaviors and coping skills. As far as the suggestions on follow-up programs, I took that advice and I'm doing an outpatient program right now and going on meetings. I was definitely glad that I got out of my comfort zone and looked to this program for help. But if one experience could be better, it would be that I had certain issues that I had to resolve with my job and certain paperwork that I had to fill out, and these took longer than they could have. But other than that, everything else was great. Overall, my experience with American Addiction Centers was very positive, insightful and helpful.

River Oaks was nice. Upon arrival, I was intoxicated and they made me put on some paper scrubs while they searched my clothes. They did all the paperwork until 5 o'clock in the morning. Then, they finally let me lie down and go to bed. They woke me up at 9 o'clock that same morning to do more paperwork. For the first two or three days, I was kinda pissed off but then after that, it was smooth sailing. I had a good therapist. I didn't speak to a case manager the whole time I was there until I was getting ready to discharge. I was there for 33 days and they offered a decent program but there were a few things that I disagreed with. The males and females were separated during group time but it’s good to hear things from another perspective. It was not practical to me in relation to real life.

Some of the staff were strictly by the book and still easy to get along with. Some of them are more lenient and not completely by the book and friendly, but there were also some who were the same way but you can’t be around them. There were different types of staff but it didn’t affect my treatment. I was there for me and I was determined to get what I could get out of the program. Before I went there, the staff told me that they would put me on some maintenance and see how I would do on that. If I was gonna stay on it, they would keep me on it and if I didn’t want it, they would take it off and it was okay with me. When I got there, they told me that they would see if they were gonna put me on medication or not. I had to threaten them that I was gonna leave if they didn’t start me on it.

Then, they lied to me again to get me to go there. They told me that I would have my phone the entire time that I was there, which was a play on words, because I got there, and they took my phone. They told me that I could get my phone back after detox. I got out of detox and figured out that you don't get your phone all the time. They would give it to you from 6:30 to 7:30 in the morning and then, you'll get it from 8:00 to 10:00 at night. So, there were a lot of downtime and boring time. A lot of times sitting there and I was just ready to leave. The guys get out of group between 3:15 and 3:30 every day and the girls have an extra group from 3:30 to 4:30. So, from 3:30 to 5:30, the boys were just sitting there.

At 5:30, we eat. It takes 10 minutes to eat, so 5:40 to 6:30, you're sitting there doing nothing. Then at 6:30, you have the option to go to an AA or an NA-based meeting. You get out of there at 7:30 and you have to wait 30 more minutes to get your phone. You don't have to go to the meetings and AA and NA is not my chosen method of recovery. It's not the way I do it. So, from 3:30 to 8:00, I was just sitting there, bored and didn't have anything to do. I ended up talking to my therapist. I asked her to give me extra time with my phone and she worked with me. She ended up giving me my phone from 3:30 to 10:00 but I was not allowed to carry my phone outside because it could be a violation. I could be outside taking pictures of other clients and there were too many clients there, so they would make you keep your phone inside.

During phone time, everybody is in their room on their phones. I would get my phone at 3:30 and I would go to my room and hang out. I would talk on the phone for a little bit, leave my phone in the room, go back, smoke a cigarette, hang out and talk, and be sociable for a little bit. Then, get back inside, get back on the phone, go back and eat, hang out and smoke a cigarette, play some cards for a little while, go back inside and check the phone. So, once I got that little situation worked out with my affairs, everything went a lot better.
