I would never recommend this service. They advertise reduction in Tax Debt but do not deliver. I owe more now than when I contracted their service. They are selling a false bill of goods. After paying thousands I now have to work through an attorney to get the results I was told I was paying for.. Just go straight to an attorney. This company is a scam and fraudulent.

Updated on 08/20/2025: So, after posting a complaint with the BBB we *finally* heard back from them. And that was a whole 'nother crap show. In short, they offered us a $700 refund if we returned to using their services with the promise of a $1087 a month payment plan to the IRS, or a "courtesy refund" of $1,274.25. I was suspicious of this plan, so I decided to call the IRS Tax Officer that had been assigned to our account directly. You know, the one thing Optima keeps telling you NOT to do. Had an interesting conversation, summary was

    1. They couldn't tell me much because Optima still had POA over our account. The name they gave us was someone we've never heard of or spoken to.
    2. They were the ones always waiting on Optima to send them stuff.

    3. They had NO RECORD of a payment plan being negotiated or agreed upon.

When presented with these facts communication basically stopped. Optima refused to give any more information on the supposed payment plan or proof they could deliver on it. They also denied all requests/demand to speak directly with their "tax professional" that held the POA over our account. Their excuse? "Optima stops work on your case" when a refund is being negotiated/offered. Also because "our tax professionals don't interact directly with clients." They also ignored all attempts for a copy of the POA paperwork (that we can't find despite it supposedly being on the client portal) to see EXACTLY where it says we're not allowed to talk to our POA even if our account is "paused". We finally got fed up and fired them.

In order to receive our refund our case has to be "fully closed". Had to email someone at the BBB to say that Optima "have addressed your concerns". Optima said they "also ask that you update or remove the negative review with Consumer Affairs so we can fully close out your complaint on our end." So fine, here's the update as requested. Never said we had to make it positive, and I'm not going to lie to make you look better.

Original Review: We hired them in 2023 to help with our tax debt. The "salesperson" who pitched their services to us PROMISED that we would not have to worry about any late fees or penalties being added to our IRS debt. This was a FALSE PROMISE!! They also promised it would be resolved "promptly". It has been over two years. We paid on time. We are out over $8,700 that we paid them and have accrued a little over $27,000 in late fees and other penalties on our tax debt. Trying to work with them has been horrible. We have gone through several "representatives" responsible for our case. Only the most recent one would even talk to ME. The others said they could ONLY talk to my husband, even though we filed jointly, because it was his name on the Optima account/case file. This was frustrating as my husband's schedule varies depending on when he's needed most.

They would not take my phone number and would only contact him. That was IF we could get ahold of them at all. The first line almost never answered and on the rare occasion they did, when they tried to transfer us to our representative they were "unavailable" 90% of the time. Their main excuse was (due to the time difference) they were either not in their office yet or on lunch break and would call us back. Guess what, they almost never did. Even if they were the ones calling us, my husband would either be put on hold immediately or put through a robo menu. Both options resulted in the call being dropped by them. We were told once we reached the "resolution phase" we wouldn't have to worry about liens, collections, late fees, or stuff like that.

We have been in "resolution" for almost the entire two years. We have gotten multiple lien warnings over the past few months that we have uploaded to Optima. They were obviously ignored. We just got a notice of Levy. If that lawsuit against them was still open I'd join. I want a freaking refund. I'd love to make them responsible for the 27k in late/penalty fees their foot dragging has caused, but I doubt that's possible. Obviously getting sued over these shady business practices has taught them nothing.

Optima Tax Relief charged me almost $5000 upfront. When I called and asked what was happening with my issue, I would get a team number and a promise of a return call. Supervisors are NEVER available. I have NEVER received a return call from them until I complained to the BBB. I still don't know if my issue is resolved or not. I was told that OTR is "not a law firm so we cannot give you an itemized statement or tell you where your issue is in the process". This is a horrible rip off and scam and they should be shut down. I have written to the Attorney General of California and complained to the BBB twice. I would never suggest that anyone use them EVER. My next step is to try to get my bank to claw back the money and then - Off to the attorneys. This is HORRIBLE. The people are stonewall experts. It is a black hole of No information!

After one year of promises all they did was put me on the IRS payment Plan with no reduction in the tax liability. When I told them that everything they had promised me never came to fruition, they said OK. Take the money you were going to pay them and pay the IRS. They are a scam company. The IRS came at us for eventually $15K in fees and penalties, allegedly over 3-4 recent tax returns. Said we never filed, never paid, ignored their attempts to reach us. To try and keep this short, we had filed all returns, which were all IRS accepted, and all years we owed had been paid in full. We had the bank statements and return copies proving all of this and submitted it to Optima Tax Relief for proof of our case. The one thing I was guilty of, missing a signature page for our 2020 tax return regarding my business form. My only discrepancy ever in 48 years of filing tax returns. The IRS also only began sending notices about anything being wrong, about 3 years AFTER accepting my tax return and being paid for it. Long Story shorter: We had a 100% winnable case. AND, the IRS sent all notices to the wrong address, one that does not even exist, PLUS we proved we had always sent them our correct addresses for decades now.

So Optima's first phase is getting all of this information straight, our initial analyst there told us, "Wow, you really did nothing wrong, and all of this is paid up!" Yeah, no kidding. The second phase, resolution and final documents/appeal, is where it all came off the tracks. Optima asked us to sign and prepare returns for returns already done and accepted by the IRS years before, and the returns they created for us were so inaccurate, criminally negligent if we had actually signed them to refile and pay more for, that it was sickening to just read. We would have wound up paying more that the ridiculous amount the IRS incorrectly charged us for. Over and over, we've had to fight to get the correct Optima Tax Relief authorities on the phone, since they bury themselves from phone and direct email contact.

Two folks had a clue, out of about 20 that kept calling us, texting us and emailing us to the point of harassment, as to how to help. Finally, we got a guy who was a specialist in clearing up cases like ours, (Defined As: Optima expects you to be guilty, and puts you through a canned process, nothing available for those really innocent of IRS abuses., so getting real help is a major obstacle with them.) and he's now disappeared too, right as he told us he had it about worked out.

We're in month 11 now in getting this resolved, even with slow IRS response time, this should have been decided and resolved already, heavily in our favor. Our case was a slam-dunk for anyone at Optima with a brain, and we're still at major-risk.

Today, they just requested for the umpteenth time that I sign a return, so badly screwed up, it would have landed me in jail, and they had all of the correct figures to do it on TurboTax, if need me, in about 1 hour with a refund of some $4K coming back. They had me owing $4K with missing income, no deductions (we have a lot of deductions), my business tax return was missing, just a freaking nightmare. We're still in limbo, and I cannot recommend them to anyone, except those folks looking for very little debt reduction, and paying a forever installment program. This is not whom their ads say they will be for you. I'd be happy to answer more questions directly for validation of my claims. My email is: **.

My husband and I were scammed out of $10,000 by Optima Tax Relief under the promise that they would resolve our tax issues with the IRS. We were assured by their representatives that we qualified for significant tax relief and were repeatedly told that their legal and financial teams would handle everything on our behalf. After we paid the full amount, communication became inconsistent. They failed to provide any clear documentation of work performed. Despite our repeated attempts to get updates and results, we were only given generic reassurances with no evidence of actual progress. In some cases, our calls and emails went completely unanswered.

Ultimately, no services were rendered, and no resolution with the IRS was ever reached. We later discovered that the same paperwork we had submitted to them was never filed. It has become clear that we were misled, manipulated, and financially exploited by a company that preys on vulnerable individuals facing tax concerns. We are reporting this in hopes of warning others and holding Optima Tax Relief accountable for their deceptive and unethical business practices.

Do NOT fall for their TV or radio ads. They promise federal and state tax help, but after charging us $7,232, we were told they “don’t handle state issues.” Classic bait-and-switch. They sold us a fantasy of tax relief, but all they did was offer an IRS payment plan—something we ended up doing ourselves for $200 less per month than their recommendation. We called the IRS directly and got a $600/month plan. Optima wanted us to pay $800/month—AFTER months of delays, lies, and getting ghosted. The first agent we were assigned quit in 2 weeks. After that, getting a callback took 3+ days each time, always from a new random person. Never consistent help. No accountability. Even the IRS warned us: they hear complaints about Optima all the time. We want a full refund.

Please do not get this service, they are a ripoff. I have paid them over $5000.00 and nothing has been done, absolutely nothing. Their salesperson told me everyone qualifies for abatement of penalties and lower monthly payment (this was not true, I have spoken to an IRS agent directly about this promise). Their salesperson also told me that they would reduce my monthly payment to a reasonable amount, because of their negligence with my account, the IRS has quadrupled the minimum payment they will accept to avoid any liens from my bank and payroll check. Their finance company has received over 5000 from me over a year's time but when I look on their site, they are only crediting me with about 1500 even though I have offered to send them my bank statements, but they have refused.

After speaking to the IRS, they themselves have said they always hear bad things about this company. As of today, I have never received a call back after speaking to our of their "managers" who stated she would work with me on a refund because the salesperson should not have made those promises. That was months ago and now when I follow up with Optima Tax Relief, they are stating that no one by this name works there and they refuse to transfer me to anyone stating that they will "elevate' my call and I will get a call back. They have ghosted me for over a year, ever since I wanted an update on my tax issues.

For the love of God do not hire this company. I have reached out to my congressman as I was advised by a lawyer. I will continue to warn people about this company. They are liars and rip you off. They cause and add more to your problems with the IRS. Last time I put my review/experience online they gave me a number to call and basically it went nowhere, if anyone can help please let me know. Thank you, I am a disabled Veteran trying to resolve my IRS issue.

We just ended services with Optima Tax after over 3 years of virtually no help from them. They didn't even want to refund us the full amount and we had to call and fight via phone and email to get them to bump it up ever so slightly. IT was such a slap to the face. Optima was great when they wanted our money. Once we committed and signed the agreement, it became the worst experience of my wife and I's lives with a company. Absolutely horrid.

For starters, their communication is the worst I've ever experienced. They clearly do not care and in fact, I think they enjoy torturing the customers with this part. After over 2 years of the case sitting still with absolutely no progress, Optima finally tells us we need a new power of attorney and it is required every 6 months. Guess who never told us that nor sent any forms 2 years ago? Yeah, Optima.

We are at the point now where we have paid our taxes up BY OURSELVES and because of this, we demanded a refund from Optima. Nearly $3000 later. They offered $500 because "they submitted an amendment for one of our tax years." Wow, that's worth $2500 huh? We talked them up to $800 even though we a.) asked for a full refund and then b.) settled for asking for $1000 to see what they would say.

Go figure, the only lady you can talk to about the refund IS ON THE EXECUTIVE BOARD FOR REVIEWING REFUND REQUESTS. Is that not a conflict of interest or what? I could never in my life recommend this place in good conscience. Biggest rip-off of our lives, to be honest. There is a class action lawsuit, we do plan to look into joining it. **

They could avoid levies, etc…” NO! NO. They didn’t. The first time we found our wages were levied was when the state of VA robbed us of 100% of our pay check within 24 hours of paycheck. The company was not even notified at all. They just took it. After calling attorney on top of Optima we got back 75%. For 4 months they’ve been robbing us of 25% of our wages. This last paycheck they took 15% and say we still owe $6000 in penalties!? No this company has no right to be in business and the state of VA should be right there with CA! It’s disgusting.

Based on my experience and numerous customer reviews, I realize Optima practices is misleading and potentially harmful to individuals seeking legitimate tax assistance.

Lack of Communication with the IRS: I am reporting that Optima failed to communicate with the IRS on their behalf, leaving me vulnerable to continued collection actions and levy on my property.

Excessive Fees with No Results: I have paid substantial fees over $12,000.00, only to find that Optima did not resolve my tax issues or even initiate necessary actions on my behalf with the IRS.

Misleading Promises: I was told that Optima would handle my cases with the help of their tax attorney, only to discover that was a lie. Beware of what the agent sold you and what's written in the contract, that's why they rush you to sign the contract.

Pressure to Pay Additional Fees: I was quoted a fee between $2000 - $3000, once they discovered the urgency and calculated my monthly salary, the fee went to over $15,000.00. The tactic used created pressure to pay more money for services that were never rendered.

It is important to note that Optima Tax Relief is not a law firm and does not employ tax attorneys to represent clients before the IRS. This lack of legal representation can significantly impact the effectiveness of any tax resolution efforts. Given these concerns, I urge you to exercise caution and thoroughly research any tax relief service before engaging with them. Consider seeking assistance from licensed tax professionals, such as Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) or Enrolled Agents (EAs), who are authorized to represent taxpayers before the IRS.

I asked again for communication, and no one called me to update me knowing I had real concerns about the money I have spent with nothing completed. I FINALLY spoke with a customer representative today who tried to threaten me with the contract, and said I would have to make an appointment with a senior representative in regard to refunding my money. I am 65 years old, a Veteran of the USA Army, I do not deserve this and cannot afford to lose such a large amount of money for services not rendered. I am very disappointed with Optima Tax, they sold me in our first conversation of all they could do and I was very frustrated with the IRS and how it was impossible to get through to someone and have a conversation with them that I signed up with Optima. I immediately regretted my decision within 5 days. They told me it would be best for them to do my 2024 taxes and when I started putting the information in it was the worst online tax application app that I have ever worked with. It assumed that if you had a 1099 you were self employed, I tried to call or get online help and it said I had no rep assigned. So I cancelled and figured I could do better by myself than using this antiquated app. So I cancelled in 5 days and I keep requesting my money back (15 day guarantee) and I keep getting put off now they have set up an appointment which will be 30 after I have canceled. I am prepared to get a lawyer if needed.

After working with Optima Tax Relief for several months it became clear that they had no idea how a small business works. Did not solve anything. I finally had to work around them to deal with the IRS through a local office to get a payment plan. I should have just given the Optima fees directly to the IRS, I'd be much better off.

I am sorry to have to add my name to this list. I should have researched prior to buying. After paying them over $2000, I finally cut them off. I had given them a cc and they were charging monthly until I cancelled the card. I received nothing but calls from foreign call centers that I could not understand. They did not do a thing for me!!!! I was offered $400 refund. Wow, how generous. I would not recommend to my worst enemy.

Where to start. First, DO NOT USE THEM OR PAY THEM ONE PENNY!! It is a total scam. The first person you talk with is a salesperson. They know nothing about taxes or tax law. Their job is to use fear to get your money. They got $10,000 out of me for a $50,000 tax bill, promising me they will get it reduced. I had no leins, just notices. When it was all said and done....I still had a $50,000 tax bill and an $1100 monthly payment to the IRS, which I never agreed to. I requested a $350 monthly payment, but the IRS said no dice. Optima had power of attorney and that was the deal.

They have no attorneys. Just foreign workers (**, usually) who just file for your scripts and submit paperwork to the IRS. Once they got my last payment for the $10,000 they stopped taking my calls or emailing me. Now it's just the IRS calling and mailing me nasty letters. The IRS knows Optima doesn't care, so you are screwed. I can't believe these guys aren't in prison. Total rip off. Talk with a local tax attorney and have him handle it. He knows the tricks and rules and how to get the IRS to bend. You've been warned. I wish someone would have warned me.

Do NOT use Optima Tax, they took $2000 from me and didn't even file my taxes. I have to file bankruptcy to help resolve my taxes. They charge way too much money. How do you call this help when they want thousands of dollars to resolve. Stay away and go with someone else
