If I could give 0 stars, I would do so. Avoid working with them at all costs. 3 WEEKS AGO my identity was stolen and a fraudulent account was set up through Citizens Bank using my information. I immediately alerted Citizens Bank and was given a case number and an employee dedicated to my case. 3 weeks later, I still have NONE of the issues resolved -- the account is still open and not restricted from use. I've been given ZERO information about progress on the case/investigation, and have also not received any indication of my liability for additional fraudulent activity on the account despite my multiple attempts to get this information.
Right after this account was opened, I had similar accounts opened or attempted opening through several other banks, ALL OF WHICH, were handled and closed within 2 business days of me speaking with the other banks. I cannot emphasize enough how much I would avoid using Citizens Bank if you have ANY other reasonable options.

If I could give zero stars I would. Reprehensible credit card company/bank. I have been a customer since 1992. I've been fortunate not to have to use any credit cards for awhile so therefore haven't charged anything. Today I received two letters in the mail (regarding two different credit cards I had with them) to tell me that my cards have been closed due to inactivity. Yes. You heard that right. I did nothing wrong. I paid every bill on time. And I received no warning letter prior to this to inform me that this might happen. They simply, undeniably pulled the rug out from under my feet. No warning at all.
Naturally I called to speak to someone and was told there was nothing they "could" do. It was policy. When I explained that I was in the middle of applying for a mortgage and that this would negatively affect my credit score which I have worked so hard to get up over 800, they didn't care. Too bad. "It's policy." I'm so upset and there is literally nothing I can do about this. I may end up losing my mortgage. The takeaway is this: DO NOT use Citizens Bank. And whatever credit card company you do choose, better ask them their policy on this. Guess I have to get better at reading the tiny print.

2 counterfeit checks were cashed on my account totaling 4980.00. These checks looked nothing like the real ones, no waterproof mark, my signature didn't match at all. I filed a claim with the fraud department and my claim was denied.... Reason: they cashed them in good faith and I told them too late... Now my question is... If I told them let's say a day after would they have owned up to their carelessness... Good faith??? I entrusted them with my funds in good faith.
I escalated the claim to the chairman's office.... Get this.. She asks me my SS number to verify my identity before she would speak to me.... Nervously I gave her an incorrect as (one digit off) guess what.. she discusses the claim with me anyway., So much for security of their customers. Needless to say my claim was denied a second time. Just to let everyone know DO NOT DO BUSINESS With CITIZENS BANK. If you have accounts there move them out to a smaller bank. If you are in Massachusetts Century Bank is great! Citizens treats their customers rudely and employs unfair business practices. They are thieves. Now I have filed a complaint with the FDIC, Attorney General, and notified news media. I am a senior citizen. They should be embarrassed. I have been with this bank for well over 25 years.... Please if you have accounts with them move it out asap... It's only a matter of time before they burn you as well.

Been with Citizens Bank credit card services for many years (5-7 years). Had not used my credit card for the past year for personal reasons. Understand credit companies have policies of closing accounts if it's not used for a certain amount of time. Almost all credit card companies will send communication BEFORE they close the account, so as a customer I am aware and perhaps motivated to use it. Citizens bank closed it, didn't tell me... I only found out b/c credit reporting alerted him. This also dinged me a little on my credit reporting. Called Citizens and their response is that it was part of my agreement when I got credit card. Again, a courtesy communication is the right thing to do...knowing it can impact credit reports. Extremely poor policy, poor response. Will never use them again and have made sure anyone I know is aware not to use them too.

I just had the most unheard experience with Citizens Bank. I applied for a personal loan. I got approved after providing them with everything they asked for and signed promissory note. I logged into their site the next day and to my surprise the loan that was already approved was GONE. I called customer service and to my surprise I was informed due to their "Final" review where they weren't able to verify something (they refused to tell me what they couldn't verify) it was declined. Very unprofessional to approve someone, make them sign a promissory note and not even call them the next day to inform them that they changed their minds? It all seems very suspicious to me, almost like they wanted all my personal information including access to my bank accounts so they can "direct deposit" the funds. Very unprofessional! Stay away and save yourself the aggravation.

I’ve had my account for about 10 years now and they are the absolute worst bank I’ve ever dealt with! The tellers at my local branch are very friendly and helpful, but, the bank policies and procedures are absolutely insane! They take forever to post transactions to the account, they take 5 business days to clear a check and they took over a month to return money to my account when someone hacked my debit card and made purchases from the west coast (I live in the east coast). Customer service center...overseas! I’ve spoken to reps with such heavy accents that I can hardly understand them. My experience with them has been completely frustrating! I’m waiting for some transactions to clear and I am closing my account and moving to another bank! Bye Citizens Bank!

I have been a customer of Citizens Bank since 2005, or maybe before that. I have a checking account that I use profusely for Work direct deposit and payment of all bills. I had issues before with their predatory overdraft fees that are out of control and after complaining I got a letter from the office of the Chairman that did nothing for me. But, this is another matter.
I also have a Home Equity Line of Credit. I had some financial difficulties so I got behind two payments. Last week, they sent me a foreclosure package about options that I have to keep my house, etc. Now that I got back on my feet I was ready to resume payments so I called the number they have on the package to discuss either lump sum payment or two payment installments. When I dialed the number they have on the letter, it asked to dial the extension number (no extension was given on the letter) or zero for the operator. I dialed zero but a recorder came up asking to leave a message. I did leave an urgent message to call me back immediately since I was obviously anxious about losing my house. That was a week ago. To this writing the HELOC did not even contact me once. I guess they are waiting to pass the time so they can foreclose on the house, and this is apparently not an urgent and important matter to Citizens Bank.
Yesterday, 03/06/2020 on Friday night, I went to the branch in Dearborn Heights, MI. The Personal Banker was nice and she called the same number on the letter and had the same experienced I faced. She used her internal number and they gave her a Consumer Finance Line 800-708-6682. However, this was Collections for vehicles and personal loans. They told her that Equity department was closed (it was after 5:00 P.M.) now and they will be open Saturday from 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.
On the next day Saturday, I called at 9:30 A.M. Again, it was the Collections Department for Vehicle loans and personal loans. The person who answered said I called the wrong number (!) but Equity Collections is closed anyways on Saturday and they will open from Monday to Friday. This is contradictory, chaotic, and non-professional. I am wasting and losing precious time on what? not being able to call and talk to someone who is threatening to foreclose on my house because of a stupid Equity Line?
I hung up and dialed the so-called Office of the Chairman trying to talk to his secretary about this quagmire but, of course, she was not available until Monday. Now, I have to overcome my anxiety over the weekend. It's time to get rid of this bank and I hope all can see the shoddy and bad service I experienced. For what I faced this Bank deserves less than one star.

Deposited Money order lunchtime. I was told it would clear overnight, but received an overdraft fee when my rent check cleared overnight. Why wasn't the deposit posted first before the rent check? Citizens bank deliberately posted the check first then the deposit, so they could charge me an overdraft fee. Of course they deny it. They should be held accountable to follow legislation put in place to govern banks - but it's not enforced.

I wish I could give it zero stars, Our organization of 700 members opened a business checking account with this Bank. Our organization is a savings group. Prior to opening an account for our organization with this bank, me and my wife had a joint account in this bank, one of my friends had an account with this bank, My friend's church had a business checking with this bank plus all signatories to both our organization and the church had personal accounts with this bank, that's part of the reason we thought we would open an account for the organization.
Several of our members deposited money on the organization's account, less than 2 weeks later, they closed our account without any explanation whatsoever! They told us they would send us a letter in the mail, the letter we received had no address or phone number to call. It did not even have any reason why they closed our account, it only referred us to the Branch Manager who equally did not know what was going on, she was very confused!!
What was more disturbing was the fact that, they did not only close our organization account but they also went further to close my joint account with my wife, closed the church's account and every signatory's individual account. Many of these people were not even members of our organization. We understand how banks operate but we have a right to know what's going on, not keeping us in the Dark!!!! This is my worst ever experience with any bank I have ever dealt with in the entire world!! If you don't what wrong you have done, how exactly are you going to change?

I had funds in a business banking account and had enough in it to avoid any charges for a low balance. I have two accounts, personal and business. I get plenty of correspondence from the personal account such as if there is an overdraft fee but nothing from the business account at all. The bank, according to its policies, has been removing $5 per month for quite a while because the account is "inactive". That added up to over $1400. It seems like and totally in my opinion there is an algorithm that says for inactive accounts do not send any information to the account holder so that accounts are bled dry.
The bank sends mail about loans and credit card, asks for survey responses, tellers act all cheerful at the counter regarding the personal account but are not able to communicate this monthly withdrawal on the business account. This is a personally damaging service response. I will be closing the personal account in the near future.

I got a credit card with Citizens Bank because the cashback percentage was high. I quickly realized that it wasn't worth it. They list your "pending transactions" in such a confusing way, all mixed in with your cleared transactions. I could never figure out how my balance had been calculated. I decided to redeem my rewards, then freeze or cancel the card. But you can only redeem your points to a card credit, forcing me to keep using it. The other option was to transfer points to a Citizens bank account. I will not be opening one of those! This taught me to stay with the big, known banks. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Reviewed Jan. 24, 2020
I didn't realize so many other people had the same bad experiences as I have been having...Citizens likes to post your transactions out of order when they know your balance is low or wait to post deposits or any transactions for days so that your account balance goes "negative" and they charge you a $35 fee for each "overdraft" and a $12 fee for moving the money out of your overdraft protection account. As soon as a few of my payments clear, I am finally closing the account and moving to another bank after being a sucker for years. They have made their money on me so now I'll take mine elsewhere. Too bad my old bank was bought out by Citizens because I liked them!
Reviewed Jan. 19, 2020
You can make a purchase and since it doesn't show up until days later you have no clue what your balance is. I honestly think they do the on purpose for the reason if you go negative they can reap in the interest and late charge fees plus overdraft fees. I've seen others say the exact same thing posted over a year ago and they still haven't fixed the issues. I am about fed up! Next pay I will be going to another bank.

I have been a customer of Citizens Bank now for 3 years. I keep very good records of what I spend and keep a watchful eye with a daily screenshot of my account because I'm short $20 to $40 per week and am tired of it. I have questioned the bank numerous times to no avail. They are right and I am wrong. There is also a fee of $68. to close out an account. There is a fee for everything.
Also, back in May 2019, they cashed a check for $3,000.00 a 6 days before the date of the check. I was trying to stop payment on the check due to the real estate I was going to buy being covered in black mold. I lost every single dollar and the only reply from the bank is that it is illegal to cash a post dated check, which knowing it's not, I reminded the teller of the policies regarding post dated checks. Her response was..."Sorry, we cant help you with this." But it was illegal for them to cash it. I still lost my $3,000. And it was a hard pill to swallow. Citizens bank puts on a great show, but that's all it is. I would not tell anyone, EVER, to allow citizens the privilege of being responsible for their money.

They ask for more information, but it's information already provided to them. Horrible experience so far. Not sure if I can switch to a new bank at this point. October 28th, 2019. I have been online banking at Citizens Bank for several years with only one real problem. The online banking is “down” far too often. After all, that defeats the whole purpose of online banking. So many times I had to wait till the next day to pay a bill. Transfer funds, etc.. Annoying. I always make check deposits via Citizens Mobile App. Usually no problems. However, yesterday morning I attempted to deposit checks. I got an error message stating that the service is unavailable, try later. I did; an hour later, two hours later, several hours later, again last evening several times, and by noon today I was getting REALLY annoyed. I have multiple checks to deposit.
So foolishly, I called Citizens. I called the specific contact number on the website that stated it was dedicated to “online banking outages”. Surprise, surprise, it dumped me into the main voicemail. Now I am more than annoyed. Why bother showing specialized numbers if all calls go to the main menu? I could tell you, but this is a public forum. Of course I am further irritated because I am forced to punch in the last 4 of my social #, and my account number, which I did not have memorized, so I had to go get my purse to get my debit card. All this fussing. Do they really need my account number simply to tell me why the app is not working? Hah!
So after 5 or 6 minutes, a rep answers and asks me if I have an Android or an iPhone. I have an Android, which is apparently not the one to have if you bank at Citizens. So he proceeds to tell me that they are currently doing an update to the Android App, which SHOULD be completed by THE END OF THE MONTH!! Seriously? WHAT could possibly take SIX DAYS?? (Six days that I know of, don’t know when they started, could have been a month for all I know.) Who or what is running this bank? They didn’t have the human decency, consideration or the manners to notify customers that they could not use the app for a WEEK (or more)?
So many times an upgrade ruins programs, websites, and apps. Not sticking around to do their beta testing for them. Citizens is NOT the only bank in town. I recently got an invitation to join another area bank. It’s such a pain to transfer all my direct deposits, and all my online bill pay info, but I am SOOOO angry, insulted, and just plain TICKED OFF, that I am ready to start. Citizen’s Bank can stuff it!
I wish everyone who has been treated as an afterthought during this “upgrade” will do the same. PS A few days later, 10/30/2019, I tried again. I got an error message stating "We are sorry. An error has been detected. (213 142 7356) Please try again." Tried 3 times, same error message. Thought the 10 digit # might be a phone number, but when I called it, it is out of service. Citizens service really does SUCK! UPDATE: Now November 1st, noontime, app still not functional. Now November 2nd, called, rep Erica said still working on it, she has no projected completion date.

I called the issuing bank and the business accountant - there was no issue with the check. I called customer service and my local branch asking if they could please speak with the local bank, who could verify the validity of the check. They refused. Cut to a week later, the issuing bank said the check cleared and funds were sent to Citizens. Despite the check being valid, and the funds reaching Citizens, they STILL refuse to release the hold.
I've spoken to multiple managers and this is their final say. I've never had such an insane experience with my money being in limbo for literally no reason. I explained that I have bills that are bouncing because of the check not clearing my account. They do not care and I've never had people speak to me with such condescension. They all but outright said that they think I was trying to defraud them of money....on a valid payroll check that I deposit once a month. It's insanity. I was victim of a scammer. As a result, I deposited a fraudulent check on my account. The check bounced and the bank charged me a $20 fee and closed my account. I went into the bank branch of Pawtucket to explain that I reported the scam to the police and to the Federal Trade Commission, that I was a victim and not my fault that the check was not good.
A few days later, I went into the bank branch of Rochembeau, Providence, RI because I received a letter in which Citizens Bank announced me that my account was closed. My bank card was also cancelled. I talked to a female employee who informed me that my account was not closed and the bank was about to send me another debit card that I would receive in the mail in a few days. So, I supposed that the bank decided to reopen my account as a result of my visit to the Pawtucket branch. I deposited online money into my bank account to pay for bills.
When I got the new debit card in the mail and tried to use it, the new card did not work as it was cancelled again. I came back to the Rochembeau branch to speak with an employee as I was confused about the situation. The male employee who saw me waiting, looked at me with a disapproving face and walked backwards, showing signs of his unwillingness to attend me. After a few minutes, he thought better and came back to invite me into his office. During the interview, I tried to explain my problem to a employee who despised me and was unwilling to help me with my case. After insisting so much, he filled out an application to make a claim on my case (and he probably erased when I got out of his office) while he was singing a tune. I had the impression that I was treated like a third-class citizen.
The third time I went to the branch of Waterman, Providence, RI where I talked to a female employee who promised to find more about my case and call me back. After more than one month, my Citizens Bank account was closed twice and the bank kept the money that was in my balance. I did not receive more letters or calls trying to explain me what happened, neither a check with my balance. I was subject to discrimination because I am Hispanic. On hold there for a while, then they interrupt the call for me to leave my call back number, and now I'm waiting for a call back. THIS IS CUSTOMER SERVICE?? If I could rate them -5 stars I would. I guess their time and bottom line is most important and their customers can just go pound salt. After this experience we're going to refi and pay this off. Hey Citizens Bank - YOU go pound salt! Key Bank NEVER treats us like this and is fast, respectful, and friendly. Their hold times are practically non-existent. Same for Quicken Loans. I will NEVER do business with this bank again once our loan gets paid off.

I have had an account with this bank for a very long time. I have never been in the low balance category or had any problems that have not been fixed to my satisfaction. However, many things have happened that have caused me to consider a migration to another bank. I will try to keep this short. Years ago my card got shut off automatically due to a fraud charge. Happy about that. That's what I want them to do. I was told I had to wait a few days for all the pending transactions to come in to claim everything. For 3 days new fraudulent charges kept coming in even though there was nothing showing in the system or on my account online. All that money was put back but what concerns me is that the lady at the other end of the line, several escalations up, couldn't explain it and said it should not be happening, etc. I let that pass.
At some point Customer service seems to have moved overseas. I understand labor is expensive and a company would like cheaper workers. I don't even mind foreign call centers. I deal with them all the time and they are always very nice to me and try to fix my problem. My concern is that this is a bank. Not just a bank but my bank. You can't afford a US based call center? Are foreign workers even bonded? If one of them was to rob my info I am sure the bank would fix it but what recourse would they have trying to chase down a foreign entity? I let that pass too. Mostly because I really have enjoyed the people at this bank over the years.
Next, branches started closing all over my area. Now if I wish to talk to someone in person or handle a large withdrawal, It's a pain. That does not happen very often so I let it pass. Next, the Citizens Bank ATMs in my town started to decline and were often unable to dispense and/or print a receipt. It often took over a week for a given issue to be resolved at a popular one near my house. Either that or It just kept having the same issue repeatedly. At this point I am starting to realize my bank seems to be in trouble. They don't seem to have, or feel the need, to put money in to maintaining their operation anymore. At least not in my area. I guess we just were not profitable enough for them.
Most recently another fraud charge happened on my card which was fixed right away. New card issued, etc. I'm satisfied with that part. Of course there was an investigation and the refund was not permanent until it finished. So oddly, I got a letter in the mail a few days later stating the investigation was over and the refund was permanent but the amount was much higher than the charge in question. How odd? Maybe there was more things found and refunded? I looked online. I see no such thing. OK maybe I got the wrong letter or there was a typo.
A few days after that I got another letter about the right charge saying that the investigation was over and it was determined it was not fraud and the charge would be upheld. I was shocked because the lady I talked to on the phone knew right away it was fraud. But it was a low amount of money and that card was done so it was not a huge deal. Just for curiosity's sake, I logged in to see if the credit had been reversed again. Maybe there would be more info on who really made the charge. I shop online so maybe I really did buy something and they used a front business to make the transactions. No, actually, I still have the credit as of now. They tell me they gave the money to the vendor but I still have the refund. It seems like they are in total disarray between dept's and the left hand does not know, or care what the right hand is doing.
I'm not angry, I have never lost a penny because of a mistake or a fraud, and I have always been treated nicely by the people at this bank. I wish there was a 2.5 stars option. I just feel like they are going under financially or have become super greedy. It seems like they are falling apart. It's too bad. I always liked this bank and the people I talk to who work for them. I feel like I need to do the smart thing and migrate to another bank before something much worse happens.

They never ever alert you when your account goes into overdraft when they supposedly set up text or email alerts (that was 3 phone calls ago and still haven’t gotten any notification..) They find little way to take your money. Always. They are absolutely rude on the phone. If you have the app, DELETE IT! It’s useless because it never updates the same day, OR something gets taken out the same day and doesn’t show, then sets you into overdraft. But yanno, getting the text alerts would’ve let me know the same day, rather than letting me know, "Hey we will charge you $35 by tonight if you don’t put the money in to get it right." Worst bank ever. Will be taking my business somewhere else. This is one of those banks that will soon go bankrupt.

I'm a customer of the bank for 8 years with both business and personal lines as well as having recommended numerous family members and others to the bank. Everyone should be treated the same though she didn't know I was a high value customer.
Honestly, I went over to a competing bank and started transferring all my accounts over. No company should mistreat its clients in an age of other options. I’ve been banking Citizens Bank for over two years now And I have never been happy about it. The overdraft program is supposed to keep you from overdraft your account. But every time I turn around I’m being hit with overdraft charges. The agent explained to me that the program only works if you're using the card but recurring payments don’t apply. But I feel if I can’t overdraft the account how could someone else. Clearly that’s how citizens get paid by not explaining completely about what the overdraft program protects..
So long story short I’ve had three different account including the one being over-drafted. Now with the second account “I had” no recurring payments and should have 5 dollars but I’m overdraft in that one and never use it and the third account “I had“ a checking and a savings but they told me I owed them 200 dollars for an overdraft back in 2011. Mind you I never had an account within 2011. In fact I got my first bank account two years ago with them... MIND YOU these are all the same accounts!!!!
Then after I had to pay 200 dollars just keep my account I was told these are the same account and I never had a savings. Uggggh. This business is a JOKE!!! THEY SCAM THEIR CUSTOMERS TO THINK THEY ARE protected from overdrafts. After MORE than the standard 10 days (7/2/19), I called Citizens again to let them know I still had not received the card. This was followed up with a guaranteed overnight delivery via FedEx that should arrive by 7/3 but at the latest 7/5/19 (due to the holiday). Both of those dates came and went and I still did not received the card. Now today (7/8/19), I called again to say I never received the credit card sent through OVERNIGHT mail back on 7/3/19.
The representative promptly begins reciting her script to tell me starting with 1) “Wait an additional 7-10 business days,” then 2) “The tracking number says it was delivered to your address on 7/3,” next 3) “Did you check your mail and are you receiving your other mail,” and finally 4) “I can resend your card AGAIN via FedEx with overnight delivery.”
I was then sent to a manager named Alexa who tells me all they can do is send a THIRD card using the same overnight delivery via FedEx again. Except this time asked could it be sent to my work to guarantee it gets to me. Additionally, I requested the option of a signature requirement upon delivery and was told they can't do that and it's not in their agreement with FedEx. Finally, after being on the phone with these people for 45 minutes, I then I asked for a tracking number this time for the card being mailed to my work. The manager Alexa informed me that they don't receive tracking numbers for credit card deliveries until the DAY THE PACKAGE IS SCHEDULED FOR DELIVERY. I'm honestly amazed at the incompetency of this bank's customer service and I haven't even received my approved card from them!

I have had an account for over a year with them. I've been noticing that they will process debits first, before they process deposits.. which oftentimes can make your account go into the negative. And this doesn't show up when you check online. If you rely on online banking, you're scr*w*d. The last time my account went negative, I went into the branch and successfully argued for them to remove the overdraft fee, because the only reason I went negative was they did not process my deposit till after 5p. So my account went negative before bank closing, even though I made my deposit before 8, which is when the ATM says deposits will be processed same day.
After going negative, I went into my account online and set up an overdraft alert. I know I did this. 100 percent. Well, I recently had 2 automated transactions clear last week. When I checked online, I was NOT in the negative on my account, and since I hadn't put any charges through I figured I would be ok. I'm not sure how but somehow I ended up -4. FOUR DOLLARS. This should have triggered my alert. But no, it didn't. Instead they slapped me with an initial overdraft fee of 30. Then when I hadn't rectified it, they slapped me with another. So now I am 65 in the hole. I hardly check this account online..I checked it over the weekend and found all this out.
I was puzzled, as I knew I had set up alerts. When I logged in ALL THE ALERTS WERE OFF. So..what does Citizens Bank do, default your account to ALERTS OFF every few weeks or something? This seems intentional. I know they got into trouble..had a class action lawsuit over their overdraft fees. Looks like it's time for another one because they did NOT learn their lesson.

In May, 1 month before starting my new job, realized I was slightly shy on cash and called to access some of the cash, but intending to keep the majority in the account - even open a new one. They wouldn't do partial anything, and the penalty cut into the principal amount. When they suggested I provide documentation to substantiate the hardship, all they can accept is hard copies. So, I do the work online to send in my money and the only way to retain it in a hardship is to spend money and send you hard copy of personal information by snail mail?
I proposed several options that would retain me as a customer with 80% of my original deposit with their bank. Clearly, the penalty is more important than retaining customers and working with them during real life situations. I'm more upset because they are cutting into money I worked really hard for - I understood I shouldn't be entitled to the interest earned, but their penalty was higher than the interest! Nothing comes easy, nothing is free. Will redeposit the balance with our own bank, in a separate account. Less interest and earning potential, but also no aggravation like this. Once I set up online banking with them and I started watching everything I noticed fraudulent charges on my account some in which were out of country, never been out of country nor bought anything out of country. So I called them. They would freeze and deactivate my old debit which I was thinking good, until they kept sending my debit card to the wrong address. I opened my account in the branch in the town I lived in. The first 1 I ever got was sent to the right address then they kept sending a new to wrong address, I had to call multiple times about fraud so they kept repeating this over and over again and mailing my new card to wrong address. I had to keep calling FedEx to bring it back to their station so I could pick up up. I still kept getting fraud charges on my account, so I finally had it with them.
I stopped my direct deposits into the account and I called them told them and told them I stopped my direct deposits and wanted to close the account. What made me decide on that was they were racking up overdraft fees and every other type of fees on my account because they were doing nothing about the fraud charges. When I called and told them about the canceling my direct deposits and closing the account I was told by the reps and even a rep manager that they would do it all and do an investigation on all the fraud charges.
After a few months went by they sent me a letter in the mail telling me I owed them over $1500. So I logged back on to my old online info and they never deactivated the account as agreed upon, instead left it fully up and running and allowed charges to continue to go through on it even with me already using another bank for everything. And I watched them rack up all these fees on me on an account I stopped using, stopped adding money to, and told them to close. They wouldn’t stop calling me and sending me mail, so I changed my phone number, but they kept and still keep sending me mail, multiple mail a day telling me I owe them and that I agreed to pay it. I never even spoke to them to agree on anything, and the fact is they are telling me that they have direct access to my USPS info and that If I move they will know without me needing to tell them.
If what they're saying is true that means the USPS allowed them my access info to my account, that or Citizens Bank is yet again commiting fraud and just think they can threaten me with lies. They lie and abuse your account and steal your money then try everything to get you to pay for it. And if you don’t they try reporting you to credit bureaus and or Chexsystems. The bank is living before the stone age. I started with them because of great mortgage loan rates. (Better than my other Banks). My first month I try to pay my mortgage from my account & every time I do it keeps sending me to another site. It wants me to sign up so I do but it won't let me without approval. This is on a weekend (my days off). I search around & can only get approval when I'm at work but my company is strict on personal phone use at work. The whole process was a big hassle. I get signed up & you have to jump through hoops for a password, but I still can't pay my mortgage through my account.
I finally get to where I'm set & the next month I can't use my password & have to go through the same crap again to reset my password to make my payment. Every time you transfer money between regular bank accounts you don't know if the money moves out not because nothing changes to indicate it has happened so if you attempt to move the money twice it could move once or twice and then you bounce a check for insufficient funds. You never know what is going to happen. Then you can only reverse one insufficient funds free per year. Though you can't see your money move or know that it happened or not if something goes wrong it is automatically your fault. So in turn they steal your money by blaming their crappy online system on your doing things wrong. How do I know if I do it right or wrong if I can't see my money move???!!! The worst bank I've ever dealt with in my life.
Their ATM turned my $2200 check into $220000 and ate my ATM card and I couldn't get it back for over 1 week then never turned it back on for me so I got rejected the next time I went to deposit into another ATM. Most recently I was playing on my mortgage & didn't see my money move once again and I've been charged 2 overdraft fees in just a matter of days. I give this bank 5 negative stars. Sad thing is the people in the bank are great to work with but their hands are tied in most all of this crap and nobody seems to want to listen to them or me in any of this crap.
Complaints??? There is nobody to complain to. I searched all over to find a way to complain with no luck till I found this page. I did find a loan officers FB page & complained thinking it was the bank's page. He was quite upset with me and asked me to remove my post as it was affecting his business to which I apologise & removed the post. I later found him again on im and he said he no longer worked for them and was somewhere else so I congratulated him on the strip up.
This bank is horrible & I will not be using them much longer. I paid it about $10k and will probably have to pay another 10k just to dump them. I would have been better if to keep my higher interest rate than to go with them. I wish I had found this info before I decided to use them. Don't put yourself through the headache of dealing with them. Run away. Run far far away as quickly as possible.

A fraudulent charge was made in another state (GA - I live in MN) at a Mariott Hotel for $980 OVER my limit. Not only should the charge have been declined by Citizens, but it should have rung alarm bells and been reported immediately to me as being a strange charge. Ten years back, Bank Of America, notified me immediately by phone about a charge made in the UK and also IMMEDIATELY refunded the amount to my card. Their mistake, their cost.
So, after finding the fraud myself on my bill and calling Citizens, I was told that yes, they concur it is a fraud and yes, it should have been declined because it went almost $1000 over my balance (I have been declined by this card for $12 over, mind you!). But "OH SORRY.. YOU will have to keep the $980 charge on your card for up to three billing cycles" (THREE MONTHS!), meaning that I would not be able to use nearly $1000 for three months. I was on the hook for Citizens mistake, and would be responsible for "loaning" the money to them for their mistake!
Furious, I borrowed 8,000 (at zero interest!) and paid off their card and cancelled the account. What a load of BS! Hilarious, really, since my credit just shy of 800 AND I've been a customer of theirs since 1998! This company feels its borrowers are trapped and they can do whatever they please. GOOD RIDDANCE!! Anyone who accepts this company is a fool. This is not the only problem I have had with them, but I never complained and was always polite even when it killed me - this was totally unacceptable.
FINALLY, 5 MONTHS AFTER paying the balance in full and cancelling the card, I got someone to say they will send me a check for the few dollars I overpaid (they could only give an estimate on payoff balance 5 months ago) and finally stop the statements to a card that doesn't exist (I HOPE). The account (by phone) continues to say I have access to all credit - though the card was cancelled. I have checked twice with Citizens and have been assured, but these people are morons and I will have to keep an eye on my credit.
AND BY THE WAY, CITIZENS BANK: You do know you were making more from me on interest while I kept a balance on this stupid card. You lost much more money treating a customer as if they had no choice but to pay for your stupidity and poor service. So glad to be free of the debt, and free from your awful company. A CUSTOMER SHOULD NOT PAY FOR FRAUDULENT CHARGES THAT EVERY OTHER COMPANY REFUNDS ON THE SPOT. Also... you should have caught it, while we're at it. Your service personnel is rude, lazy, unapologetic, and stupid. And so are your policies. Anyone reading this: choose literally any other company for credit. I have never had so many issues with a bank as I am having with the Citizens Bank in Newtonville. I opened an account for my 16-year-old daughter with Jay the manager well over 3 months ago and Jay has misinformed me from the day I met him. The promotion offered to me, required one direct deposit of $1,000 to get $400 (below screenshot) which I complied with. To qualify for a new checking bonus you must open your first new personal checking account, excluding Student Checking, between 1/31/19 and 5/16/19 and have at least one single direct deposit post to your new checking account by the date stated in the table below based on your account open date.
Bonus amount and payout date will vary (see tables below for details). If single direct deposit is at least: Bonus will be: $500 $200, $1,000 $400, $2,000 $600. To make matters worse, I was charged a $9.99 monthly maintenance fee for a student account that Jay specified would have no fees. I have called the bank numerous times in the last couple of months to speak to Jay and he hasn’t returned one call, strange when the branch manager doesn’t want to speak to his customers?!? I have spoken to Justin, Will and another gentleman whose name I don’t recall. During my conversation with Justin I was told that the maintenance fees were being waived and guaranteed me that I would get the promotional deposit on April 25th. He also assured me that he would follow up with me and unfortunately, both promises were not kept. Jay keeps avoiding call and worse not returning them! I hope that someone at the corporate level can look into this and please get back to me.

I've been with Citizens Bank for over fifteen years, checking, savings, home equity loan. Ten years never made a late payment to this bank or any other creditors of mine. I put a payment in and it was one day late. This bank reported me to my credit report. I have always maintained a 100 percent on time payment on my credit reports with all my credit cards and car loans. Now because I was one day off, without any phone calls or warnings from Citizens. They reported me and my credit score dropped 50 points and I no longer have a perfect payment history. This bank had no care for their clients. I will pass my experience off to everyone I meet. Hopefully I can put a little dent in their reputation.

I am a graduate student in Boston, MA attempting to finish a Master's Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. To obtain this degree you are required to do 2 unpaid internships. I am in my second internship working with at risk youth in inner-city Boston. Not only is the internship unpaid, but it costs A LOT of money as it is part of the degree program. Consequently, I am dependent on financial aid to pay rent, bills, food, etc.
My account at Citizens became overdrawn in January 2019. I reasoned that, when I received my financial aid via direct deposit into my Citizens account, the balance would be covered and I could pay rent, bills, etc. On 2/11/19 I received electronic notification that my school had send $8,000 plus dollars via direct deposit to my Citizens account. I checked my account. It was no longer overdrawn, but the balance was $0. I called and was told, "We closed your account because it was overdrawn for too long."
I received NO notification that the account was closed. 2/11/19 was the first time I was told, "Our recovery department will send a check to the address we have on file once we check and make sure the funds are good, please hold." I was put on hold. The staff person came back and said, "Funds are verified. We will get a check in the mail to you tomorrow. It is now 2/28. We have turned of internet, electricity, heat, and hot water to save money. Let me tell you, living in Boston without heat in the winter is rough. A good side effect is that I've dropped 2 sizes in the past month because I can't afford food. Poverty is truly the best diet.
I am not naive enough to think Citizens Bank cares about any of these circumstances, but I thought they would keep their word, stop holding my school funds hostage, and would send me my check when they first promised... not said... but PROMISED, they would, which was 2/11/19. I was just informed not 5 minutes ago that the check was never sent (Keep in mind, I have called at least 7 times since that first call on 2/11, each time being met with the same process, "Please hold while we verify the funds, funds are verified, we are emailing to have your check sent immediately).
Now, facing eviction, I have consulted legal advice. It seems I will have to drop out of school (I was only supposed to have 3 months until I graduate by the way), so that I can work a paid job. It is too late to withdraw from the semester with courses refunded. So, I will be paying for not one, but two extra semester of school because I will have to restart my second internship in the fall. Citizens Bank, in one month, has exposed me to living without heat and electricity in the cold New England winter. Citizens Bank has provided me with the experience of living in true poverty. Citizens Bank has triggered a depression so intense, I have been prescribed mood elevators which are drastically affecting multiple parts of my psyche. Citizens Bank has pushed my relationship with my partner to the breaking point.
I wish Citizens Bank had been honest from day one. I wish when I asked, "Can you set up a checking account with NO overdraft fees? e.g., if I don't have the funds, the purchase is declined?" Citizens Bank said "Yes." This was a lie. I wish Citizens Bank had told me they were going to close my account. They never did. I wish Citizens Bank didn't lie about sending me a check. This lie caused me to lie to my landlord who has reached the end of his grace.
Citizens Bank has walked me through what has been the worst banking experience of my life. The side effects of these experiences will be affecting my life for the foreseeable future. As I go public with my story via YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, I leave my comments here for the edification of other young professionals seeking higher education who do not come from money or privilege. This bank will add to your stress and steal your money. Look elsewhere. Any place else. Horrible horrible horrible experience.

Approved by them for mortgage then just before closing they 'reneged.' My credit score had dropped before closing, because we had moved out of our old house and unbeknownst to us missed a bill payment that went to collections. I was also never made aware they were doing repeat checks (partly affecting score). They agreed, looking at our finances, we could easily close and make payments but the sticking point was the FICO score.
Multiple calls and emails to rectify situation were frustrating because they stopped responding and required repeated messages and emails to elicit replies as to status of loan. They've pulled my credit 8 times in the past 3-4 weeks. Communication has been abysmal throughout this highly stressful situation. In addition to this they had kept sending us incorrect terms to sign repeatedly (wrong loan amount, wrong term). They also kept requesting us to send them the same information over and over again because they just seemed to be unaware it had already been sent. After being led on for several weeks after our initial closing date we have finally given up on them. And we are houseless... I would never recommend them or ever use them again.

Sometimes struggling companies start breaking rules when the end is near and that is the case with Citizens Bank. Banking with Citizens has gotten so bad that you literally have to take screenshots of your transaction for every purchase and deposit you make if you want to be reimbursed for wrongful fees. Also if you get paid or make deposits after 7 pm Thursday the funds will not be available until the following Tuesday morning (see funds availability policy). Debits however are immediately withdrawn 24 hours a day 7 days a week and any funds on hold will not cover the debits so you will be charged $35 for each transaction. There are a lot of good banks and it's best to thoroughly research their policies before choosing the one that's best for your needs but I would stay clear of Citizens Bank.

I asked for 20 dollar bills and the teller said it was an inconvenience. Most establishments do not accept 100 bills so I asked him to try to accommodate me since I would be spending money in their local economy. It was only a few hundred dollars, so it should have not been a problem.
He counted off the bills and left them scattered across the counter. Then he looked at the teller next to him and started a conversation. I stood there in disbelief that he left my money scattered across the counter instead of placing them in a stack or giving me a receipt. He looked back at me and said, "Why the ** is she still there?" I am absolutely disgusted at this bank and the level of unprofessionalism there. You will definitely see a negative on Monday and get hit with a $35 fee on top. Everyone here is almost having the same problem with this bank. I was on a positive after I paid a bill that the bank had pending over the weekend. I withdrew $30 Saturday out of $35 I had left over in my account. I had $3 and some change left over. Next thing you know, my account is on a negative Monday when I was told by an assistant manager that my account would not be on a negative even though the money for my bill was pending. There is no reason at all why my account should be negative.
I paid Verizon - they received my payment immediately. Citizens Bank had it on hold as if I did not pay Verizon when I have a receipt from Verizon stating my bill was paid Feb 8th. So why is it that Citizens have it pending when it went through. I was either double charged or it's just their system. All the dates are wrong when you log onto your account, the numbers change, the prices change. My account was positive yesterday because the manager had no choice but to reverse the fee but yet I wake up today and it's back to a negative with another fee and she refused to refund me that fee when clearly their system is all wrong and she can see I did not overdraft.
Worse experience of my life - worst customer service, they rob you for your money, they don't help you at all. If you see a Citizens Bank run as far away as possible because they will definitely for sure screw you over. Once my account is positive, I'm closing my account and switching to anywhere else. Any other bank is better than this one. They caused me so much emotional distress over the past year I've been with them. I have severe anxiety disorder and major depression. This bank will make me go crazy and sent to a mental hospital, that's how frustrated I am already. Please do not bank with Citizens. Big mistake.

In Sept 2017 I opened an auto loan account, everything was ok except their site is not user-friendly. I made payments on time every month like a good customer. In October 2018 my daughter had an accident in the car and it was totaled. My insurance company very quickly sent a payment (less than one week after the accident). Because there was still a balance on the loan I continued to make payments. I had GAP insurance which requested several documents before issuing a check. I got everything I needed from each place EXCEPT Citizens Bank.
I called them to get my payoff statement and payment history, and after being placed on hold for over an hour they told me it would be sent. Nothing was sent. I called them once a week for the entire month of November and no one could send me these simple documents. Finally, I got them to fax them to me and after three attempts they got me the correct documents. Great I could get gap to pay them off. I paid November's loan payment. Two weeks after GAP sent the check to pay off (which was over the amount owed). They finally cashed it and applied it to the account. The balance was zero and the account closed. However I also canceled out the extended warranty and they mailed a check to my home addressed to myself, my husband AND Citizens Bank. So I had to endorse the check and mail it to Rhode Island. Citizens bank told me that they would just endorse the check and mail it back to me. THAT never happened.
They cashed the check, wrote my account number on the front but did not deposit it into an account of mine. In fact, no one knows where the money is. After a month they finally sent me a check for the amount. It was a Citizens Bank check. fine whatever, I have the money. Or so I thought. I deposited that money into the account at Navy Federal Credit Union which is my normal bank. Well, Navy Federal put a hold on it until it cleared which is fine because that is normal policy. However, three days later CITIZENS BANK placed a stop payment on this check, throwing my account into the red and activated my overdraft account.
I immediately called Citizens bank and their response is, "We will have to investigate where that check is. We do not know why you even got a check." I told them it was warranty cancellation money and it was owed to me. "Well, our BACK OFFICE has to investigate which can take 7-10 business days". So as it is right now CITIZENS BANK has stolen my money and refused to give it back. I need that money. I feel so taken advantage of right now.

I take issue with the one from 7 years ago being reported now, along with the newer one. Lesson learned. So worse interest rates for me but good news for my new bank.

I have 3 accounts with them, the standard OD service and as long as I use the accounts & transfer at least one cent to each one via their transfer from account to account I NEVER get a monthly fee. As far as overdrafts, I know the rules and I agreed to the terms. If I do OD my account I have 11 hours to put the money in to cover what I overdrew and only after 11 hours there will be a 35.00 fee. If I put the money in within the time frame they allow I have NO fee. The CS has always been friendly, kind, knowledgeable & courteous. They are human beings. Treat others as you yourself want to be treated. Anyway, I love this bank.

I use this account only for my small side business. I only put money in and take the same amount out. Well, I find out today that my account got overdrawn for .37¢. Yes, .37 CENTS!! I was charged a total of $160 in fees for this small error!!! Things kept snowballing. I was able to get two of the $35 fees refunded, but I am still being charged $90!! This is completely unacceptable. I guess this small petty change error really hurt Citizens Bank to cover. Not once did I even get a letter sent saying that it was short .37¢. Talk about robbing the customer with fees!!! I don't even write checks from this account.
Obviously the customer does not mean anything to them. I was told that it is all computer generated. I get that may be so, but they could and did see that it was such a small amount and they could of waived all of these charges. Well, it's apparent my small error really put Citizens in a financial bind that they had to gouge my pockets for this high ridiculous amount!! I will be going elsewhere and telling everyone I can of their tactics!!

I call the bank about a transaction that I do not recognize on my account. The representative provides the merchant name and telephone number. When I called the merchant in Sioux Fall and indicated that they had charge my account for services I do not have as I am located in Pittsburgh; the merchant told me that the Accounting Department would not be in the office until later. I called the bank back and indicated that the charge was fraudulent based upon the information I received. Since the transaction was pending the representative stated that she could not stop the transaction. I requested to speak with a Supervisor. The supervisor verified the information and indicated that I had been given the wrong information about the transaction. After she provided the corrected information, I was able to confirm the transaction. I requested that she remove the dispute and hold on the account. She stated that she would.
In the next week I remit payment to the same merchant and this payment was reversed because the bank had a hold on the account. I started calling around 11:00 a.m. Eastern time and continue to call to get a representative who understanding processes within Citizens Bank. Each experience is consistent: 1. Long hold time. 2. representatives who lack adequate training and tools to hear and perform their job. 3. Be prepared to constantly repeat yourself. 4. Inaccurate information and indifference (not mean spirited) tone death. Representatives in the Dominican Republic should be trained to handle Tier 1 and Tier 2 calls. Horrible experience. In August of 2018, my information was stolen and someone stole $800 from my account. It took Citizens a month to get my money back to me! When I called to report the transaction (you can't do it online like at USAA), the representative asked me several times if I made the transactions. They told me that I needed to contact the place where the charge was made, but I didn't have an account with the unauthorized business that made the charge. Finally, after calling twice, they got around to investigating to find that I didn't authorize the charges.
Now, roll forward to December 2018, I log into my account and once again, my money has been stolen. I called immediately and the lady asked me if I called Capital One. I do not have a Capital One account so why would I call them first??? She filed a claim but told me that it will take 10-15 days to investigate and get my money back. This is ridiculous. All the other banks I have had always give back the money while they investigate and then if deemed to be an authorized charge, they take the money back from the account. I am absolutely finished with Citizens Bank and will never recommend their services after this! My money has been stolen more there in the past 6 months than it has in the 8 years I have had an USAA account. (The only reason I had it was to have a local bank to put cash into.)

On December 5th I received a letter dated 12/1 stating they have reached out to the other bank. My payroll check is deposited electronically the first of the month. They rolled back three automatic payments to the 30th of Nov to adjust for the weekend. I manually went in and changed the date back to December knowing there would not be money in that account until the first of the month. They overrode my manual change and paid all three on November 30. Which sent my account into overdraft. I called on November 30. Spoke to foreigner who put me on hold and then came back and said sorry for the delay then disconnected me. I immediately called back (drilling down through the normal menu and waiting my turn for 10 minutes) and spoke with Dawn of Pittsburgh. She confirmed that there was enough money for the first $50 payment and the second $350 payment. The third $1400 payment caused the overdraft.
She said when the overdraft charge appeared on Monday to call back and they would refund because of my long-term history with the bank dating back to 1970 Mellon Bank. On Monday Citizens rearranged those bill pays. They first took the $1400 which immediately threw my account to overdraft. So then they charged two more overdrafts for the two smaller deposits. Now there are three overdrafts. I again called and spoke to three separate people over an hour. While we were on the phone I was told by Eugene there were no notes from my conversation with Dawn??? (no surprise) and they would elevate this issue and return my call. They also told me that I probably forgot to hit save when I made those date changes (really??) and I told them I am certain I actually went back in twice to make sure the date was correct so I would not overdraft.
They also told me that I probably made the change too late and the payments were on their way. I reminded them that their system does not allow me to make changes to the dates when their system is tagged “in process”. This was 9 AM on Tuesday and I never received a return call. Wednesday morning they returned one overdraft fee without making a return phone call. Not to mention I had to call my mortgage company and explain the situation so I was not charged a fee for making a payment with no funds in the bank. First, they changed and overrode my payment dates causing overdraft. Second, after the fact and two payments were made they rearranged the dates so now three overdraft fees instead of one was reflected. Three, they never returned a call. Four, they told me there was no record of my call with Dawn. Five, tried to make it my mistake that I forgot to hit save.
Six, they tried to make the excuse that I changed the date while the payments were already on their way which is impossible to do in their system. This exact same thing happened to me 10 years ago when they charged me five overdraft fees. I am elevating this to my Government representatives, and FDIC, Citizens executives, State insurance department. They are holding me hostage for two $35 fees because of their mistake. No way would I entrust them to my 401(k) nor my two pension rollovers nor my mortgage. I am not incompetent nor careless. My balance was $218 until I spent about $20 yesterday but when I check my account it says I have $219 (No I didn’t deposit any money) and the purchases are nowhere in sight/still pending... They try to post/hide your purchases until you spend too much and end up in the negatives! Some purchases won’t even show up until a few days, then I realize I spent way past my limit since it shows my balance as more than what it actually is! Any tactic for them to get extra money, they’ll use it. Be careful with this bank.

I went into the Citizens Bank branch in the Walmart at 2101 Blair Mill Rd Willow Grove, PA 19090 and asked if I could deposit or exchange $35.00 of rolled coins I rolled the night before from all the loose change in my car. When entering the branch there were 2 young tellers sitting at desks talking to each other and made me feel as though by coming in...I was disturbing them. I told them what I wanted to do...and immediately the one teller said they would only do anything if I had an account (which I do have). Before I could even answer, she asked how much rolled change I had... I answered then she asked the other teller if she needed change and if she did then to take it but if she didnt then they couldnt help me.
SO, I looked at her and asked, "If you dont need any change (coins) other than at banks where do you suggest I deposit or exchange rolled coins?" To which she replied, "To the other teller." "Ok you can take $20 of it but you have to count it all out." Then looking at me...she said, "'cause I'm feeling nice". SO, while they were counting change (of course we all know what a terrible burdening hardship it is for a banker to have to count money)...she "did me a favor" by accepting the remaining $15 I had in rolled coins.
Sarcasm - I am so thankful that Citizens took pity on my low petty wrapped coins as to accept them and convert them into paper currency. I realize the 1:38 it took to count such a bounty was extremely taxing on the tellers (it took both of them to count $35) and I apologize from the bottom of my heart to Citizens Bank for having the audacity to actually go into one of their branches to perform a minute banking transaction. Seriously - It is clear that employees of Citizens Bank are NOT trained well in dealing with customers. At this branch you can match the professionalism with that of a public playground...in the bad side of town. Question - I will leave this one open ended. Can Citizens answer this question for me? If not at a bank...where do people go to deposit or exchange rolled coins?

When it came to setting up a routine "Beneficiary Payable at Death", the Manager [D.K.] refused to accept a 'Trust' established over 14 years ago, until I present IN PERSON the original document. My explanation that the document is presently stored with other legal papers with my lawyer, and I DO NOT POSSESS it anymore (but know all details!), was not convincing. As this whole transaction took place in a rather 'customer unfriendly' atmosphere, I decided not to press it any further, and next day called Citizens Bank Customer Service.
After a very lengthy process, I ended up talking to a Supervisor Alexandra **. who told me, that a "special form has to be filled out and this form is available ONLY in person at any of the Bank's branches and cannot be mailed to me ahead of time". She refused to provide me with either the e-mail address of the CEO of the Bank, Mr. Bruce Van Saun, making it impossible to file appropriate complaint.
It has to be added that at this time I own several CDs with FOUR OTHER BANKS, where the same Trust is indicated as "Beneficiary Payable at Death", and in no case was I forced to make repeated personal appearances, fill out special forms or present original Trust documents. Despite my rather advanced age (almost 85) I will probably have to take my chance to survive for next 15 months, as to comply with the Citizens Bank mindless rules and/or personnel is a bit difficult.

I became an individual checking account customer a year ago because my branch's location was convenient. Within a few weeks, I deposited a large (for me) check from a company client paying for my services. I wrote checks against the deposit which began bouncing immediately (at the highest bounce fee of all banks in my area). But much worse: I inquired of the bank why they had place a maximum length (they said) hold on my check. The bank personnel, all the way up to the "Office of the Chairman" of the bank, to whom I pleaded, maintained the reason was "irregularities on the face of the check." I have had this same paying client for years. The CEO is a friend. He had cut and signed the "irregular" check. But Citizens Bank, all the way to the top, refused to talk with him.
My client CEO left a party with his wife and friends to return to his company's office at night to examine his copy of the check that Citizens Bank was holding. He saw no "irregularities". Finally, when I appealed up to the "Office of the Chairman" of the Bank, the Bank employee (junior, not the "Chairman") who answered refused, when I asked, to tell me even what the "irregularities" were! He said, clearly reading from a script in a "boiler room" operation where I overheard in the background lots of his fellow junior employees arguing with customers, that the alleged "irregularities" were a "secret" of the Bank.
I gave up, paying over $100 in bounce fees to the absolute end of the Bank's maximum hold period. All of which bounce fees they have refused to refund. The management of this Bank is clearly out to abuse holds arbitrarily in order to make illicit profits from even their smallest customers like me. Their entire upper management are utterly unethical, the next thing to criminals. Do not, do NOT! Be a customer of this Bank under any circumstances!!!

I checked my account this morning and it said a negative balance of the check I deposited. Definitely not depositing any more checks with Citizens.

I have been a customer with the Citizens Bank on College Street since January 2012. I found most employees very heartless and unappreciative. Up until this month, they were charging me three dollars on top of what any establishment would charge for my debit card, sometimes five or more, and when I would complain to many tellers or supervisors they would not care less. I would keep my slips, and do math and the statements made it look like they were taking out less fees than the slips I would keep. Anything I would ask for they would deny since 2012. There were times when I did no business and I would see many unnecessary charges. I figured out they were fleecing me for at least fifty dollars a month out of 900$ disability.

If I could give 0 stars I would. This is by far the worst bank I have ever dealt with and I have been around. I will list in order the problems of this bank. 1. Time it takes for anything to post/clear. If you deposit, use your card, transfer money to/from, the account will not update for almost 3 days. THREE DAYS. The popular banks will do this instantly. This requires you to constantly have to balance your checking account by memory. I had paid rent with my checking account, and it shows nowhere in any of the transactions that this is pending, or sent. I was unsure if I actually clicked paid on the rent web page, so I sent it again. Guess what, it sent twice now. 3 days later I finally see this in pending, and they charged me twice.
I also had to do a bank to bank transfer. Send money from Citizens to Chase. Once I sent this, (using Chase's tried and true website) I see nowhere on Citizens that I have sent money. There is absolutely no sign of this posted or pending. I called Citizens and after 25 minutes of hold, I gave up. I called Chase, talked to someone within 2 minutes, and they said they see nothing coming into the account. (No, I do not work for Chase, I am simply putting how terrible Citizens is in perspective). Have no idea what's going on with that payment now, so I have to be sure not to touch x amount of money. "Manually balance my checking account."
2. Mobile App/Web App. A perfect 0 out of 10 for these ** platforms. The mobile app is extremely annoying, bugging, terrible UI, constant clicks to get anywhere. The website is not far behind. Total disaster on the UI/UX of these platforms. 3. Customer Service. Try calling Citizens. Go ahead, give it a shot. You will never get anyone. Inconsistent, dated, ugly. Do not bank with them.

17 hours ago. 9/27/2018. I Changed to Citizens bank a year ago, because they were closest to home, and since my branch was in a Supermarket, they were open more hours. That seemed ideal @ first. Citizens always credited my check deposits next day, as is their policy. This week, I deposited a check for five hundred dollars, The teller was polite, and told me that the funds Would be Available in the morning. It was my intention to purchase a certain Pallet of roofing shingles. The following day, the deposit had not shown in my balance as promised by Citizens. I called the bank and was told that they, once in a while, pick random checks and can hold them for a week if they want too.
In my lifetime, I've had several banks, and you bring in a check and it goes in your account. End of story; However, Citizens Bank, decided not to do that. They decided they were going to hold my check until Oct 4th, even though the funds were there, and the check has cleared! How can they do that and it be legal? I feel like I was sucker punched by my bank for no good reason and I am very unhappy about it. People If you are considering Citizens Bank, I'd Reconsider! Seriously! They change their policy on a whim... Because they feel like it. They are keeping my five hundred dollars for an extra week, and I'm out a Pallet of, much needed Architectural roofing shingles! I have been banking with Citizens Bank since 2014. I requested my account to be closed because I got tired of paying $100 whenever either my $11.99 Netflix account or $19.99 gym membership would automatically withdraw at times when I wouldn't have the balance available. However, my direct deposit has always been connected to my account so I figured "What the heck, next time I'll make sure it wouldn't happen. I'll pay the overdraft fee". Unfortunately, I get paid biweekly so I would be charged $35 for the overdraft fee then an additional $30 every few days. At times I would be charged I total of $100+ for a negative balance of $-4 to -7. Which I would find absurd. Finally, I got feed up after going through this every few months, and realized I was paying the bank to hold onto my money.
I requested my bank account to be closed, but was told that I needed to withdraw any money in the account as the account can only be closed with a balance of less than 10 cents. So I did that on 8/10/2018. I transferred over my direct deposit, and today on 9/7/2018 I noticed my health insurance was not taken out. I decided to see if I can log into my Citizens Bank account online just to see. I was able to, and when I looked my bank account was overdrawn $- 600. I was/am livid. I knew I wasn't going to get anywhere with customer service, but I decided to give them another chance. After dancing around the electronic system to press XYZ keys to actually speak to a rep I was put in a queue for 15 minutes when I finally was able to speak to Luis. After explaining my situation to him he put me on another 10 minute hold to most likely dismiss my case with his higher ups.
I was told there was nothing that can be done for me since I used my one-time overdraft waiver a year ago. I told him I didn't mind paying the balance off, but I found it unbelievable to charge me over $350 within less than a month, which is another car lease, just to hold onto my money. He then restated that there was nothing he can do for me, and that I would have to pay off the entire balance. I respectfully thanked him, feeling defeated already. He quickly then told me to have a nice day, and hung up on me without me being able to respond "you as well". I would never recommend this bank to anyone, please make sure you go to a credit union before you bank here. Lesson learned.

Had the displeasure of speaking with Brandy who claimed she was the top manager available to me out of the Pittsburgh Office - but that she could not give out the business address. That gave me a good laugh. Probably she was sitting at home in her PJs feeling important. Anyways I opened a checking account in conjunction with a Personal Loan I took out. Obviously, I did not need the account but it promised me a lower interest rate. I placed a minimal deposit. At no point was I directly informed that there would be a service fee or that to avoid that service fee I needed to make any amount deposit each month (literally .01 cents would have sufficed).
Now perhaps this information was buried somewhen in fine print but it was not made explicit. I never received any paperwork for the account and did not access my online account until I received a notice that the account was over withdrawn by $10. At that point, I recovered a login name I had not created to find that Citizens had been charging $10 every month. I called to have the money recovered and the account reestablished and Brandi refused - and she refused to connect me with someone else who might be able to help me.
I explained to her that since this account was created as part of a promotion, that I didn't think that Citizens wanted to lose me as a customer over $100 when as a business investor they earn thousands of dollars from me. So I will be going into a branch, hopefully they will have a more business savvy response. If not the account will be closed and the loan will be paid off in full, subverting the upcoming interest payments. Good job Brandy.

I'm 3 months into banking with Citizens and I hate it! Their online banking app is deceiving. It does not reflect your correct balance especially if something is paid on a Friday! Usually banks show pending transactions right away and post them Monday. Nope! Not Citizens. I paid my credit card off Friday and it's Monday. Not only does it NOT show any pending transaction of any kind from my credit card company and reflecting the wrong available balance for 3 days, I called Citizens and they said it dont post into Tuesday! The reason I hate that is I was on vacation. 2 weeks ago when I got a swiped my card for gas before we left (Wed) and when I got to hotel... my online banking said I had $232 so after I paid hotel I shoulda had $2 until I got paid FRIDAY.
I swiped my card 4 times Friday. I woke up Saturday in the negatives! Uhmmm wait why? Come to find out my balance I was seeing on Wed was not the balance I had available! Now I'm pissed. Every time I had to call Citizens past and present it's a 10- 20 min wait! I'm really pissed now! They refunded one $35 fee but blamed the merchants for delays on the online banking post! Their app is very deceiving. I no longer swipe my card with them no more! I get direct deposit and pay my 2 automatic bills. One being my credit card and I swipe that for now on! And go directly to brick and mortar for many additional cash needs. Yes it's more work at times but at least I'm not being bamboozled into fees! My credit card reflects real time transactions and if I don't have it I don't have it!

After waiting on hold multiple times over the period of a week I was able to find someone who told me about the numerous steps I needed to complete in order to close my account. I received a check in the mail a couple weeks after completing the steps. The check was worth less than what the account started with after the fees to process and close my account. They charge overdraft fees when nothing over drafted! For example, if you have $5,000 in your account and pay a bill for $2,000, but there are bills lined up in queue for future dates that have not been paid and the money is sitting in the account they consider that an overdraft! Even though another deposit was made well before any of those bills were up to be paid. Nothing ever bounced, there was always thousands of dollars in the account but they charged me $117 in overdraft fee in anticipation that something could but didn't bounce! The deposit was made so I call after a week to find out if the bonus would be credited to my account. After being on hold for an HOUR, I’m told that he looked in their system and no such promotion exists. I told him I had it screenshot where it said that it did. He put me on hold for another 20 minutes and came back and told me that the promotion already passed. Knowing this, I pulled out $40 from my account. Two days later, I get a call from my husband that our account was overdrawn. After calling the bank, and sitting on hold for 30 minutes, the CSR tells me the final purchase I made hadn't in fact posted to my account, so when I withdrew money from my account, I went over $16, and they charged me a $35 overdraft fee for a total of $51 overdrawn. I told him my account had already shown the purchase posted, but he acted like I didn't understand how overdrafts happen. I called back because he told me that there are two balances, your account balance - and your available balance.
I only saw 1 balance. Upon calling back, I talked to a manager who said she thought that maybe the seller hadn't claimed the funds the bank had put on hold for me and the money was returned, without notice. Then maybe the seller claimed the purchase so that's why my account was short when I withdrew the $40. I'm irritated because despite using online banking, and despite checking my account, I'm still going to be charged because somehow the money wasn't accepted fast enough for a purchase I made the same day as another purchase for the same company, which was claimed.

Bruce Van Saun and the executive team at Citizens Bank are criminals. They use advanced algorithms to reorder transaction history, in consequence creating frivolous overdrafts fees. They will even rationalize such by stating "we reorder transaction history to ensure your largest purchases get paid first." Example of how this transpires: Let's say you charge 8 items on your debit card, on a Friday. Those 8 items leave your account with x amount in positive funds. Monday morning comes around, and a housing payment goes through, rendering your account negative, let's say by 1 penny. They subsequently reorder the 9 transactions, 8 on Friday which should not elicit an overdraft, and the one on Monday, which should. Now all 9 are assessed an overdraft fee, in the amount of 9x $35 = $315.
Only one should have legally been assessed if the order of events were adhered to. The algorithm was created at CMU, and they have put great emphasize on finding ways to screw over consumers. Additionally, many other complains are congruent to such. This is NOT speculation, it's a fact. The executive team is comprised of criminals, and they should go to jail.

So we had been account holders for almost 20 years. We also bank with a credit union in the northern part of the state. To make a large purchase I wrote a check for cash at Citizens using the northern bank. The Citizens teller had to get approval and after quite a few attempts finally located someone on the phone. The approved told her to confirm that funds were available in my account at the other bank. No problem. I provided our account number and their phone number. She called and was told that there were sufficient funds to cover the check.
The teller calls her approver back, relays the confirmed funds information and is told to tell me that her approver “is not comfortable” approving the check. Result? I was totally amazed. Then I was told I could “drive to the other bank.” I told her that was 3 and a half hours away. She then used the platitude that all businesses say but rarely mean. That is the words, “I’m sorry” which usually translates as, “You’re out of luck and there’s nothing I’m going to do about it for you.” Mind, the funds for the check were confirmed. I had been banking with Citizens Bank over 10 years until about a month ago. Over the years, and I have over drafted the account before. Whenever this happened I would receive a notice in my email and recently, in late 2016 I signed up for text alerts for the account. Nothing has changed in my life that would make it hard to communicate with me. In the past if said account was over drafted and I did not remedy the issue within the same business day a fee would be charged, I remember the fee being $25 for each day in overdraft.
On May 31st I got paid. I scheduled 2 payments to come out of the account that day, forgetting that my new payment date for car insurance was coming out automatically on the 5th. I knew Netflix comes out on the 4th. I spent 60$ on grocery on the 1st. Come the 4th and Netflix comes out and the grocery. Neither payment to Eversource had posted or even show up as pending that day. I did not check my balance on the 5th.
On the 6th my account shows a negative balance, 2 payments to Eversource appear to have posted on the 4th along with the groceries, but the Netflix is now showing posted the 5th along with the car insurance, and 2 overdraft charges at 35$ each. WTF. I called and said, "Hey how come no one got a message to me yesterday, I could have fixed this." She will not waive any fee because 2 transactions while in overdraft means they can charge 2 fees. She promised no third fee would be charged. She says that am not signed up for alerts. I said that I was sure I was and to put that back on. She says I have to do that myself on the website. I said that was stupid. She put me on hold. Transfers me to someone in IT and he is laughing saying that I was never signed up for alerts.
On the 7th I log in and see a third overdraft fee dated the 6th, and my payroll direct deposit. Well I closing the account I told myself, this is theft. On my lunch break I went to the bank to close the account. Teller says she can't do that. I ask why she says because the third overdraft fee is still pending and you need to keep funds in the account to cover that. I got loud and the manager came and looked with her says they can’t close it because of another automatic payment that was scheduled for the 8th not the overdraft fee. Makes me even madder. I took all my money out except what was needed to cover that. I decided to call customer service and complain again that afternoon, ended up getting the 3rd fee waived. He called it a one time courtesy. He was actually returning stolen money to me.
Went to the Stop and Shop Branch to close the account on the 8th. No argument from this teller but then she said, "I hope you do not have anything scheduled to come out automatically, if you do it will reactivate your account and will charge an overdraft fees." I said that was stupid. If the account closes why would the bank be obligated to pay my debts? "That's the policy," she said. I said she should work someplace where stealing money from your customers was against policy, not where stealing from us is the actual written policy. The manager told her to stop talking to me and asked me to leave nicely. Nicer than the last manager I had dealt with by far. A policy that allows Zombie bank accounts to accrue fees is 100% intended to make the bank profit.

I told her it was a fraud charge cancel the card send another one. Why would she make that type of statement. I spoke to her manager and she agreed that she shouldn't have said that to me. They act like it's their money they are using for the claims. Why do they care? They have insurance on money for fraud incidents. I called another day to ask about the claim and I got the same lady and she said how did this happen. So I take it she does that to all claims callers. This is sad and I will cancel my card and account. I will not be treated like this and I am the victim.
Updated on 06/28/2018: I was told to get a police report and my claim will be looked at. I talked to Cindy and Daniella in the claims department. Both are managers. They talk to me like I was a low life scum bag. I told them I made the report and they said they will close my claim for fraud and told me to let the police dept handle it. They have fraud protection and why am I told the police will handle my claim and they don't work for citizens. Today I will close my account. They talk to you unprofessionally like the money is coming out of their account. Very disgusted with this bank and these two employees. I am the victim.

I was very happy with Citizens Bank for my mortgage until (post divorce) I went to refinance. First, I refinanced back to 30 years to afford the payments (17 years ago). Then, 7 years ago when interest rates went down, I tried to refinance from a 6% mortgage to a 3.5% rate. They turned me down!!! I was good enough, despite my low income, to pay 6%, but not good enough to pay 3.5%. I was furious!!! Three years ago I found another financial institution with a great reputation, and they accommodated me. I paid off Citizens and took my business elsewhere. Overall, I really like Citizens Bank, but turning me down, esp when I had a great source of equity and an excellent credit rating made no sense. Shame on them. I will even pay off my mortgage ahead of schedule.

My car loan was through Citizens Bank. I was always on time with all my payments because it was being automatically taken out from my checking account. I thought my loan was already paid off but it was not. I got a phone call yesterday stating that I have never made my last payment and it reported to the credit bureaus because I was over 90 days late. She stated that the last payment has to be manually sent in which I was never informed before. I even called in before it was paid off to ask how will I be receiving my car title after it’s paid off but that representative never mentioned to me about the last payment has to be sent in.
They never sent me any notice in the mail to inform me before reporting to the credit bureaus. I have never intended not to pay my bills and they had my bank information all along to take the money out for the past four years. This is very unethical of them to ruin my credit for something that I was totally unaware. I will never do business with them ever again. Please be aware of Citizens bank!

He apparently opened account in a Acme store location! I was just made aware that other Banks are involved in class action suits for being involved in the same behavior of opening accounts without person's knowledge!
I visited a Citizens Bank after perhaps receiving the ATM card by accident on this fraudulent account and was told by branch manager that they would look into this and I never heard back from them. It’s been some time now however I never understood the severity of someone doing this, this account is closed now but how do you know how many other accounts have been opened in your name by scam artists out there while you have no knowledge of this? Banks usually require a driver's license or some form of legal identification to open a account! I have no idea who in this bank committed this fraud and let this man open account without having any of My legal information, driver's license, etc. nor person on account even being present while this account is being opened. I was a customer for over 10 years. The advertisements for this bank state "no minimum balance" and "no monthly fees", these statements are untrue. This bank has taken over $120. on 2 separate occasions due to my balance getting close to a .65 balance. Within 24 hours of the balance being so close to $0, I was charged $42, another time last year when this happened I was charged $42. and it doubled because I did not catch it within their 2 week cut off, another $84. I was told it doubles every 2 weeks, so if I had not caught it, it would have been $168? I had 2 checking accts and there was plenty of $ in the other acct., but they do not help you by transfer, to not go to the under $1 and again NO loyalty such as a phone call or email to give a heads up, like in the old days.
There is no loyalty with this bank, they obviously need the money more than us poor folk and they do NOT negotiate so don't waste your time trying. BTW, when you try to stay on the up & up, you are treated very poorly! I hope this helps others when trying to find a bank to do business with, whether you are rich or poor. I closed all of my accounts today, they did not even ask "why" after all these years, they do not care and have very poor business acumen.

The bank automatically enrolls you in Overdraft Protection with a Line of Credit. Even if you have two accounts, they don't link those accounts together so any overdraft is taken from the second account. If you accidentally overdraft an account, you get a Line of Credit "loan" which they then charged you 22% interest rate on monthly. There is no notice that you have overdrafted so these "loan" payments continue until you notice a ding in your credit report. It is not even clear online what is happening and you can't even pay off this "loan" online if you wanted to. This has happened twice to me now. I swore that I cancelled this "feature" the first time it happened to avoid this, but just realized it happened again when my credit rating took another dip. The first time this happened, I called the bank and they told me to write a letter to the manager of the branch where the account was opened. I do this, but received NO REPLY.

I opened an account last year with Citizens Bank in Dudley branch and few months later there was 500 withdrawal out of my account on Feb 2017 - apparently someone walked in and the teller gave them $ 500 out of my checking. I called and explained to them that I only opened my account there. I never walked in ever since and how is that someone is walking in and able to do a withdrawal? They apologize and stated that they investigate the situation and credit my account.
Early March 2018, I received an email indicating that a new card was ship - I was not sure why so didn’t call. I assumed that was their standard - this account is only for saving and transfer rent fee. I have never used it in stores. I did not think anything of it until I received a letter in the mail saying, "Thank you for updating your address or phone number," and if I did not to call, I called and found On March 26 2018, a bank withdrawal at the Dudley in Roxbury location occurred again. $400 was taken out my saving and 300 was taking out my checking saving and 80 was deposit in saving and 20 in checking.
Again the common issues all occurred in the bank where I opened my account - who is doing this I believe in internal. How can some walk in a branch and take money out of someone else account? I strongly believe that is someone who works in the bank. What is the protocol for the Dudley branch in Roxbury? What is the validation of identity? I am extremely disappointed with Citizens Bank of Boston for their lack of verification of identity. Also the person opened a credit card with Citizen under my account. I am extremely schooled. I have been with Bank of America for a very large my time over 20 years and this never happened. I have only been with Citizens Bank less than 2 years and with that time frame 3 incidents occurred.

I have been a customer of Citizens Bank for quite some time and other than their oft-complained about overdraft policies, I have had a relatively good experience and like the staff of my local branch. However, the reason I am writing this review is that all of that has since changed. I originally opened my account following a divorce and should note that I am a single father to a two year old little girl. I was also unemployed at the time, but still frequently used the account. I have recently started a new job and after working for the first month I was issued two corporate bank checks to deposit until my direct deposit becomes effective at the next pay period.
As there is a Citizens Bank branch right down the street from my office, I immediately stopped in and deposited the two checks at the ATM in the drive through lane (early morning on Wed. 3/14). Now, keep in mind my employer is well established and has been a fixture in the community for over 200+ years with no issues. I didn't expect the money to be available first thing Thursday or even Friday, but I was shocked to learn upon my inquiry that the money was being held under a "hard hold" until Thursday 3/22 - over a week!!!
I am a very reasonable individual and could understand if these checks were third party or from grandma or your friend or whatever, but not a corporate payroll check from a better than well-established organization. The frustration begins when I've already been waiting and working for a month to be compensated and when I finally am and want to go and do things for my daughter Citizens Bank has prevented me from doing so. But I am the one left to try and take care of a child and explain to her why we can't do the things we've been a month to do and why we can't buy the things we need even though daddy has earned the money and been paid. I called customer service and spent over 90 minutes of our Saturday morning wasting my time and simply getting the run around. I then waited until Monday morning and went in the branch I deposited the checks, all to no avail.
Finally, as a last resort I decided to drive into my home branch where I opened the account (staff is great here btw). While on my way, which is taking time out of my work day, I call corporate customer service again to see if there is any solution at all. What I am told is that if I can provide a local number and contact from the issuing bank (my organization's corporate banking account) and call Citizens back with that information they can then verify the checks and release the holds. Now this sure seems like I'm doing someone's job for them but having no alternative I decide to try and see where it gets me. I successfully stop into the issuing bank and get a representative to assist me which was great. However, the joy didn't last as when I called Citizens back they told this couldn't be done and the only thing to do for the hard hold to be removed was simply to wait until the 22nd (over a week).
So I am writing this complaint because this is completely unacceptable in our fast paced world of instant everything and computer technology. This bank plays games with people's lives. I'm left at a loss for words to give my little girl and left without access to the money I earned while spending time away from my little girl all because of outdated and antiquated bank policies.
Where is the common sense? My organization is old and has been around forever. Why would one of their payroll checks not be good all of a sudden? The answer is that it is impossible but yet Citizens bank plays with people's lives and well being. There is no reason for this hold and the inconvenience I have encountered. Truth is that I could have went to the issuing bank, Walmart or a check cashing location and had cash on hand. Rather, I used my good standing bank account in which I make significant deposits and get handcuffed for over a week waiting to access MY money.
Citizens bank is simply a terrible awful business and the worst bank I have ever used. My friends in the PA Attorney General's Consumer Protection division have already been forwarded my information and to no surprise have stated the list of Citizens' complaints is long. I suggest taking your business elsewhere and will do everything in my power to bring this company to their knees as that is what they have done to me. It is too bad because they do have some good folks at the local branch levels but overall this is a place you don't want to be associated with and there are many other banks that will treat you like a person in 2018. Citizens bank, it is one thing to play games with me. It is quite different to involve my little girl. This will not be the last you've heard from me. Count on it!

I own many rental properties and have had over 20 mortgages over the decades. I have dealt with many different banks for this. Citizens is the worst by far. Incorrect insurance amounts being paid out of escrow accounts wrong, year after year, they have missed paying property taxes out of escrow accounts at times, a total pain trying to get mortgages paid off early, you can not go into a branch and do ANYTHING with your mortgage as far as paying it down or getting their screw ups corrected, statements come saying the it is auto paid from an account (as is suppose to be) and then followed up with a letter saying you have not paid it. Nothing but constant babysitting their terrible bookkeeping. I quit dealing with their mortgage department 6 years ago and in the middle paying off the last mortgage (24 early) I have with them.
I call and they say, "OK, you are correct, if you get more nasty letters, just ignore them." I just got a "Default" letter on the last $200 balance on a mortgage that was suppose to be closed out 2 months ago, when the monthly statement clearly stated $1100 will be drawn auto out of one of my accounts with them (and it was not), not to mention they have $4,000 of escrow they could use to do it. Hours of dogging them for a messy $200 balance that could (and should have) been paid off automatically. I have several checking accounts with them with a total balance ranging from $100K to $200k with them at all times. Now I am concern they may report this as late in my credit report. I borrow from other banks and have a 850 FICO, so it is important to me. If there is one mark on my credit record I am going to my attorney. They are fine with savings and checking accounts, been with them for 35 years, But I would NEVER EVER go to them for a mortgage.

On 3/1 I accidentally used the wrong card to pay for an item via PayPal. When I noticed on the 1st (this is not my primary account, though I was planning for it to be... definitely not now), I attempted to make a payment with the "express delivery option" to cover the amount, but the website kept giving me an error message telling me the dollar amount format was incorrect. No matter how I formatted it, I kept getting the same error message. I emailed customer service to let them know about the issue with the website and was expecting a quick reply given that I was trying to pay them, but I have so far received NO REPLY to that communication at all. Calling didn't seem like the most reasonable move, since I doubt it would have been any easier to get in touch with the IT department via phone.
On the 2nd when I hadn't heard back from anyone about the error message, I transferred the small amount of money I had just received via eBay sales from my PayPal account which was just enough to cover the transaction amount. Unfortunately, an overdraft fee was already processing, which I was not made aware of until well after it had gone through.
On 3/6 when I realized there was an overdraft charge on the account, I tried to initiate a transfer from my bank, again getting the same error message that the dollar amount was incorrectly formatted. On a whim, I switched the delivery method to "standard" from "express", and what do you know? It worked. Had the system not been so poorly functioning, I could have made the payment on the 2nd.
BUT WAIT, we're not done. On 3/7 I was charged a "sustained overdraft fee", which I did not even know was a feature of the account, and is completely ridiculous, considering I had already tried to pay for the initial overdraft. Citizen's customer service is some of the worst I've ever received, online, and in person, right up there with Target, and I WILL be closing this account as soon as I get this resolved. Oh, and if you need to write them an email that's more than two short sentences, you're out of luck. There's a character cap on every available written contact method on the website.

If for some fluke or odd reason the account holder falls on hard financial times, the account goes into a negative, then Citizen Bank will access a fee EACH day the account is negative! What goes on in the minds of the board to think “while the account holder is negative, giving them more fees will help him or her to crawl out from the financial hardship faster.” WHO THINKS OF THIS NONSENSE!!! How does assessing more fees on top of fees makes sense!!!
Trust me! Don’t bank with them. You will fall in hard times, this is America. Citizens Bank asked me to co-sign the mortgage to make sure he got the loan. I was hesitant giving a bank we didn't work with my tax returns, but did so.
Citizens turned down the mortgage request without looking at me as a co-signer and asked my son to get better credit and open a bank account with them and turn over his stock portfolio to them. Are you kidding me! We were putting a 50% down payment on a condo and they wanted his stock portfolio turned over to them which is worth way more than what he was borrowing.
So thankful the condo fell through. Too many warning bells with the relationship between the condo and bank. I have to assume Citizens owns the $2.5M mortgage on the building and all the condo owners are responsible to paying off its debt. The whole transaction with Citizens was sketchy from the beginning. For some odd reason when the loan went to be approved it was denied. So now it will show up on our credit report and affect our credit. I did some research to see if this is all legal and what I found is most times that you are denied for a pre-approved loan is because you did not respond quickly enough to the offer and perhaps something involving your credit has changed.
This absolutely was not the case as I responded to the offer almost immediately - if anything my credit should have been even better - having recently paid off more debt. Don't believe their commercials that you should ask a Citizen for help - the second I was denied they said bye - no other route to take or anything else. Citizens literally withdrew over $3000, out of my checking account, without my permission, causing, my already scheduled bills, to be returned as unpaid, and now states that I had “insufficient funds”. The statement on their website doesn’t even say what the withdrawal was for - it says, ”Citizens’ Bank DEBIT MEMO”. Can’t wait until this bank is opened today! I’ve had enough of them stealing the money out of my account. Citizens Bank just “helps” themselves to their customers' money. Word of advice to other consumers - this bank has mystery charges, and they will take any money that they can from you, without notification, sending you into negative balance, so that they can collect more “fake fees” from you! RUN, run, run!
Citizens Bank has no shame! This bank doesn't care about their customers. I’ve been with them for 20+ years. Moving on! This bank has taken thousands of $$ in fees from myself and as I can see below, from their “one star” rating, taken from many other customers as well. Guess they didn’t learn from the last class action lawsuit. A judge will show no mercy on this Bank, it’s been one time too many. Simply incredible that Citizens continues to use these shady business practices. Guess they haven’t learned yet. That’s too bad.

First off, I opened my bank account online. Because I didn’t open my account with a balance initially it was closed (I guess I took too long) and I had to go to a local branch. I did. Reopened my account and made a deposit. The teller and I reviewed some paperwork. I signed and that was the end of that. When Friday rolled by I went and deposited my payroll check. Not aware of this “25 day grace period”. So, there was a hold placed on the funds. I was told it’d be available that Monday. I survived the weekend. The app continued to state funds would be available on 1/22. When I reopened the app in the morning the date changed to 1/26. What?
I call customer service. They claim it was because they couldn’t verify the check. I go to the branch and ask about this verification. A different teller tells me that’s not the case. It has to do with the “grace period”. “What grace period?” I asked. I’m basically looked at like an idiot and dismissed. “Wait until Friday! Oh well” is the attitude I received from the teller. No empathy. I called a different bank and the teller over the phone. Either doesn’t like my voice, or doesn’t like my last name. I got the same treatment from her. Only one teller I can set aside. She definitely tried to help. I wasn’t made aware of any check deposit hold. Had I known I would have never deposited my entire payroll check.

I would NOT recommend this bank to anyone! I am currently banking with them and have been banking with them for about 3-4 years now. When I lived in Lincoln, after MANY times of them doing anything they could to get me to make an account with them, I finally did. At first it seemed like a great bank. Then the past year and a half I've had fishy over-draft fees. When I make a transaction, it automatically tells me my new balance on the online banking app after I refresh it; therefore, I know exactly what I have even if it hasn't gone through on their end yet except for checks of course. So, last night my balance as of like 11pm was $6.01. I went to bed and woke up and it was -$3.67, so I go to the bank to put money in before 10pm, as you have until 10pm of the day that your account goes into the negatives to put the over-drafted amount in to avoid an over-draft fee!
So, I get to the bank and they tell me that my account is actually -$38.67 and as I'm trying to explain everything to them the lady is VERY RUDE and talking over me before I even had a chance to fully explain. So, I ask her... “Is it an overdraft fee?” She says, “It doesn't show one on here,” then I said, “Well I have until 10pm to get money into the bank to avoid an overdraft fee,” and she looks over at the other teller and asks if that was actually true and she says it was true. Mind you... this is the same lady I spoke to the last time something like this happened and you would think she would have done her research after the first time... seeing as you know, she works for the company! So then she was like, “I highly recommend you bring the account back to the positives,” and I told her I don't even feel comfortable with this company having my money at this point and feel like closing the account.
She then told me that I owe so little that I could leave it as is and it wouldn't affect me in any way or go on my credit score and then made an appointment for me to talk to someone tomorrow. So then I call customer service and talk to someone who tells me the extra $35 WAS from an overdraft fee and after trying to get the overdraft fee taken off which they wouldn't do because I had one done back in September and you supposedly only get one a year, which wasn't the original deal, I spoke with a supervisor. The second she got on the phone with me she was EXTREMELY rude and I wasn't rude to her at all. She treated me like an idiot and told me that the overdraft was from a $10 check that went through. So I said, “Well if it went through yesterday then it didn't tell me on the app, otherwise I would have made it to the bank before 10pm to avoid the overdraft fee."
It didn't tell me on my app that it was negative until this morning, so I went to go correct it and they have an overdraft fee already in place? She then feeds me a bunch of lies and basically tries to confuse me to get me off subject and still VERY rude even though I was very polite (just a little stern) and then I ask, “Well if the $10 check made it go into the negatives, then why does it not add up? With the $6.01 balance I had yesterday plus the $3.67 I went negative today only adds up to $9.77.” She ignored the question several times.
I've had a bank teller tell me one time that this happened that they basically put my fund on hold for a long enough time to charge me the overdraft fee and she put the money back into the account for me. The one and ONLY honest bank teller I've ever come across with this bank! I almost let it go too, but she was actually honest with me and figured it out for me and realized they tried to basically steal from me and her being honest corrected it and gave me MY money back!
So anyways, I tell the lady on the phone that I would like to just close my account then and she said I couldn't without it being brought back to a balance of $0. So I go, “Well that's funny because the lady at the bank just told me to leave it as is and eventually it would close itself and not affect me or my credit in any way,” and she was like, “Yes it eventually would affect your credit.” And I go, “No It wouldn't and maybe you guys should stop stealing from people,” and I hung up. This has happened quite a few times too (the fishy overdraft fees). I absolutely think they are trying to steal money from people and are getting away with it!
A LOT of people don't know the 10pm rule (you have until 10pm to make your account positive to avoid an overdraft fee from the day it overdrafted) and there's a lot of bank tellers that don't know that either and don't want you to know. As soon as I can transfer everything over to a new bank I will be leaving Citizens and warning absolutely every person possible that these people are THIEVES! I HONESTLY do not trust them with my money and a lot of the bank tellers don't make you feel welcome. The customer service is the worst I've ever seen and there's no knowledge amongst the employees.
I am more than happy to pay an overdraft fee when it is actually necessary and actually my fault, but not when I know for a fact it is fraudulent. I have now got a bunch of paperwork and other stuff in place just to see if I can figure out every time that this has happened and have there be a lawsuit put in place. I know enough lawyers where this can be figured out and where they could be sued if found guilty. I see a lot of people with the same overdraft problems on here.
No one should have to pay for their own money especially when they are trying to follow all the bank's rules to a T! If I didn't see that overdraft fee before bed last night, then how do I know it didn't come out after mid-night?? Because technically I would then have until today at 10pm to fix the overdraft. Now I can't even trust the app to give me accurate information if it didn't tell me that the check went through yesterday. If my payroll check wasn't going through tomorrow then I would be done with this bank already! And from what I know... when you close an account or leave it as is... you are only responsible for the money you overdrafted, so in my case... the $3.67 are NOT their fees.
But, as for now I will deal with them and try my absolute BEST to keep an EXTRA close eye on my account, so that they cannot steal from me in the meantime. Then I will be calling a lawyer in regards to these over-draft fees. One girl has already admitted to me that they have done it to me before, so I am sure the rest could easily be revealed with enough evidence. And I am not the type to sue people and never have, but I would really hate to see this happen to any other innocent person! Stay far far away people! There are banks out there that won’t do this stuff to people!
I'm a very honest person that is doing whatever I can to keep myself and my kids and little family going. I work my BUTT OFF in college and at work to get by and this stuff with this horrific bank has put me in tears too many times trying to figure out how to pay a overdraft fee that most likely (for probably almost all of them... should have never been there anyways). And now I am just getting angry. If you have Citizens and plan to stick with them, just know your rights and keep a close eye on your account(s).

DISCLOSURE: Citizens Bank recently settled a lawsuit for 137.5 million for manipulating transactions to maximize overdraft fees. NOW READ THIS: I have tried to shut down my Citizens Bank account after moving from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C. where there are absolutely no Citizens Banks and was unable to. I tried to shut down the Citizens Bank account because there are NO CITIZENS BANKS IN D.C. and I exceeded the amount of money I could MOBILE DEPOSIT ($5000) and COULD NOT PAY MY RENT OR BILLS.
However, even though I asked for the account to be closed and emptied of all money so I could open a new account at a bank in D.C. so I could pay my rent and bills, I was told by Citizens Bank that the account would reopen if any deduction came through within 60 days after closing the account. 60 DAYS, FOLKS. LET ME REPEAT. 60 DAYS AFTER YOU EMPTY YOUR BANK ACCOUNT AND CLOSE IT, THEY WILL REOPEN IT! I've had a Citizens Bank account for about 10 years and I have set up everything to be automatic deduction.
So, I first checked to see what was coming directly out of my checking account and called those businesses (SPENT AN HOUR RIGHT OFF THE BAT), to update those payments to my new bank account. I also called Citizens Bank and cancelled my Visa/debit card so that any businesses deducting money out monthly would be unable to (like Lyft, Netflix, Amazon, AT&T, etc). At which point, and I AM NOT KIDDING, I was told by customer service and later corporate, that even if I cancel the Visa/debit card, the MONEY WOULD STILL BE DEDUCTED.
I asked Citizens Bank then to tell me exactly what businesses I needed to contact to make sure a deduction wouldn't re-open the closed account and result in an overdraft fee. NO JOKE. THEY COULD NOT TELL ME. In fact, after 3.5 hours of talking to corporate, I received in the mail more than a month later a thick packet of 60 pages of bank statements from April 2017 to December 2017 from Citizens Bank and, specifically, from one Ryan **, office of the chairman, phone number **, saying that Citizens Bank can't figure out which transaction will overdraw a closed account and I need to review and figure it out myself. Uh. What???!!!!
So, I spent 3.5+ hours calling and updating all vendors that I had used the bank Visa/debit card I cancelled. DO YOU KNOW HOW STRANGE THAT IS? THAT IS NOT NORMAL. Only, while I was a postdoc working in gene therapy to save lives, I accessed 2K in credit from Citizens Bank. And I was told by customer service when I asked to close the account that I would receive a coupon book so I could pay the amount back and I’ve been waiting for that coupon book to show up in my mailbox but I never received it.
Instead, what I finally received from Ryan ** was a packet 3 inches thick with 6 months of bank statements with absolutely no direction as to which vendors I should contact to cancel automatic deductions, and absolutely no coupon book, so I can’t pay off the 2k. As a result, in two days, my account will overdraw because I have been unable to put money in or close the account. And this is why this bank needs to go. You want to talk about manipulating transactions to maximize overdraft fees? Look no further. Go ahead, overdraft me, Ryan **. Three words for you: CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. Because if this is happening to me, who else has this happened to? Judges have a lot less mercy the second time around. 137.5 million? Drop in the bucket.

I could not get a $30,000 HELOC loan from Citizens. I own two homes and only one has a mortgage. My credit score is around 725. I have had the same employer for 10 years and I have lived in my own home for 14 years. My income sources bring in around 140K yearly. So, if I can't get a loan from them then who can? This loan for a line of credit.

Bad Customer service. Finds any way to take money when they can off their customers. They do not give you updates on your own money and gives you false readings of your money on their website. By far worst bank to have money in. I will be switching banks as soon as my deposit start going to my other banks. You guys need to get your people together and stop taking other people's money.

Over 12 years banking with them and they throw you out like an old shoe. No issues until this past November and every department has a different excuse. They say one thing do another. Give an option then you're an idiot 'cause they never said that! Like I am pulling information out of my butt and making things up. I would NEVER recommend this bank to anyone. You can’t even give a disabled person their December monthly income?! Excuses and LIES!!

On December 13th I reviewed my accounts online; as I am diligent in doing, and noticed a withdrawal of $3800.00 from my savings account had been made on December 8th. I called immediately to report it and was told I signed for it. I said I most certainly did not...where did this occur and was told, after being put on hold numerous times, at some in-store branch (some store I've never even heard of) in Philadelphia... I live in NH and was at work on December 8th. Then begins the whole process of filing a fraud claim. Understand, I have been with Citizens Bank for ~30 years and for the most part have always been confident and pleased with them.
Having this occur, I now know that my identity has been stolen. From where or how I have no clue, probably the Equifax breach. I have my ATM, I have my checks safely snug at home and use very rarely, I have my license from 2013. Not a duplicate. It really is scary how this can happen to you. I have many steps to go through to cover myself, but the fact that my money left that bank with a withdrawal slip, a phony license and a phony signature that is so unlike my own is unacceptable. I've now had to open up 2 new accounts checking/savings and I asked what's to stop them from doing this again? I mean do you flag the accounts or something? I got a no. They do not flag the new accounts...only the compromised ones.
Why? What good is it to flag an account that is going to need to be closed anyway? In explanation as to how it would not happen again, I was assured that whenever a transaction is made, your signature that is on file pops up on the screen and is supposed to be compared to what is presented. Very low confidence level here.
Again, I check my accounts frequently just for things like this, mystery charges and fees and I see a charge from them today for $12 for rushing me and my husband new ATM cards tied to the new accounts. Seriously? I called, not thrilled at having to spend more time on the phone; as well you can imagine is all I've done for the last week, and they did reverse the charge, it's just frustrating that they never told me there would be a charge in the first place, otherwise I would have disputed it right then and there when I ordered the new cards.
Granted, someone stole my identity of which neither I nor Citizens Bank is to blame, however there is a joint responsibility in this fraudulent activity. They have the obligation when being responsible with people's money in making damn certain that when someone withdraws that kind of money (maybe it's not a lot to some but it is to me); and the history of the account does not reflect this type of thing as normal, that extra scrutiny is applied. Had they even glanced at my on file signature; there would have been no way they would not have noticed the entire differences between those two signatures and it may have made them look much closer at the license.
As of right now I am still waiting for them to put the money "provisionally" back into my account while the investigation continues. I went to a branch and had to have a signed affidavit notarized and mailed out and received by them before they will even put the money back. Most everyone that I have dealt with has been pleasant and helpful but this is still something that I firmly believe would not have happened had professional protocol been followed through. Not to mention they may have been more apt to have caught the person impersonating me. Great way to spend the holidays and end out the year.

Very frustrating! I received a personal consolidation loan about 6 months ago. Since then, my credit has improved tremendously! I contacted them today about refinancing for a lower rate (4% lower than my current according to their website and my credit score), and they told me that they do not have a process set up for refinancing at this time. You also can't apply for a separate Citizens Bank loan to pay off the existing. I've never once heard of this "not being able to refinance a loan". Take your business elsewhere!
