I have submitted numerous proofs of residency including title paperwork. I then submitted a utilities bill also but it still says not adequate proof. They also have my driver's license with my proof of address and my son is transferring from a TN school. All I'd like is for him to be in school please.
Hello Kalene. My apologies for my delayed response here. As a public school we are required to collect very specific forms of documentation from families. I know this can be very frustrating and I apologize for that. If we can be of any assistance, please feel free to contact us at the email I provided in my earlier private response. ~Kim
If you’re thinking of enrolling your child, do not. They take a lot of time. 40-70 hours to see a enrollment documents. I don’t recommend this online school if you are in a rush. They also don’t answer calls. Don’t call. Email them. Bad experience overall.
Hello Alessia. It’s always our goal to provide families with quality customer service, and I’m very sorry that we were not able to meet your needs this fall. We did see a sizable uptick in interest in August of this year, and, as a result, we experienced delays in document and enrollment application processing. I hope your family found a school solution that is working well for you. ~Kim
I have been a Connections Academy Learning Coach for about 3 1/2 years going on 4, I want everyone to know that if you're looking for an online school Connections Academy is the way to go. From the curriculum to the teachers I have never experienced education at it's best, teacher have the patience and the caring that one needs, they help with everything very fast and the learning what can I say is impeccable. I highly recommend Connections Academy for families who are looking into homeschooling their children. Learning that a brick and mortar school can not offer.
Hi Keila. We’re thrilled to hear that you’re having such a good experience at Connections Academy. Thank you for your review! ????
My oldest daughter graduates this month after two years with Connections. She got the opportunity to do dual enrollment with a state University that I could have never afforded to do for her without connections, it was a difficult switch as her local school had been a failing school and she started off behind. My youngest is completing her first year as a 3rd grader. I did work with her on her school work daily as her committed learning coach. She grew so much as a student and was eager to do her schoolwork. She was also behind and her teacher put her in small math and reading groups which she got to work through at her own pace and move to the next set of exercises when she was ready. She is finishing her school year with straight A’s, a big smile, and confidence. She’s already looking forward to the summer connections and next year.
Hi Amanda. We LOVE to hear about students who’ve recaptured their confidence and love of learning. And hats off to your older daughter for taking advantage of dual enrollment opportunities!! Please give your graduate our best wishes and tell your younger daughter that we have some awesome things planned for summer connections. We’ll see her there!
This was our 4th year with Oklahoma Connections Academy. We have 5 children and have now experienced every grade level from Kindergarten all the way to a graduated senior. My oldest has now completed his Freshman year of college. OKCA gave us freedom to be involved in extra-curricular activities such as Oklahoma Homeschool Band, Homeschool Gymnastics, Martial Arts as well as social activities such as field trips. Before coming to OKCA our students were in a Private Christian School and then we moved to a traditional Homeschool setting.
Our decision was we wanted to know exactly what our children were being taught and as well wanted a challenging curriculum. Unfortunately the school district we live in does not have stellar public schools. OKCA has been an awesome experience for us. I as a parent love that I have the support of teachers, principal and counselors like I would in a traditional school setting, but have my children home with me learning. I am able to view exactly what they are learning and as well help them understand what they are learning. Please note...for elementary ages this DOES require parent involvement. I sit by my 1st grader for about 3-4 hours a day helping her navigate her lessons and then she does other learning activities independently, like math worksheets, reading, and art projects.
I love the electives that are offered. Everything from Chess club, foreign languages, computer skills classes and even an ASL class. We also love the flexibility this setting provides for our family as we can work ahead so we can have days off, or work their calendars to suit our own schedule around doctor's appointments, field trips, extra long weekends for quick trips and we have even gone on vacation during the school year and the kids are able to complete their lessons while away in our downtime.
Experiencing K-12 in four years – that’s a really neat accomplishment. It’s great to see how your family took advantage of our school’s flexibility to get involved in extra-curriculars. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. Have a great summer!
I have two boys that have attended Connections Academy the last 3 years. My oldest graduates this year. It has been a wonderful experience. The teachers are caring, supportive, and helpful. Both boys are dyslexic and I could not think of anything that could have helped them more with have complete access to computer classes. The IEP teachers are great and do everything they can to get your student to college. Through the pandemic their education was never altered it stayed strong and that means our boys' education remained strong and going in the right direction. The program is flexible but you must stay as structured as possible and it helps with having live lessons with the teachers. Connections Academy is the best.
Hi Tammy. It’s so exciting to have a graduate in the house! Congratulations to you and your son. Thank you for sharing your family’s Connections Academy experience here. We’re so glad to hear that the boys have felt supported on their educational journey!

I've learned to embrace this school.
I am a 7th grader in Connexus as of April 15, 2021. This education really isn't education. It is a way to say "Oh, I go to school." It's really daycare. I have learned nothing this year. The only way I'm passing is by my learning coach trying to walk me through everything. "Learning at your own pace" marketing is a scam. If you don't complete your lessons on that day, you become overdue. A friend of mine is trying to learn at her own pace, and is over 20 overdue.
I mentioned I've learned nothing. They have you take a mandated/required test about every 2 months to assess you. I was dubbed "unsatisfactory" in the Math portion. Now they have me take a mandated/required extra-curricular math class called "FRECKLE." Here's the problem: if you don't spend 120 minutes in FRECKLE MONTHLY, they give you an unsatisfactory grade. My computer can't do FRECKLE, and my friend lends me his computer once every 2 weeks for a little bit of time to get it done. Also, if you don't contact your teacher every 2 weeks, you become in alarm. If you are in alarm for too long, they threaten to call the police. So that's my experience. Against my will, I will be returning next year. Hopefully, they will change EVERYTHING.
I’m sorry to hear you’re having a rough year, Dylan. Have you called the tech team for help with Freckle? Please let your teacher know, too. I hear your frustration about overdue lessons and having to talk with your teachers regularly, but that structure helps you stay on track so you can learn what you need to learn to move on to the next grade. Please reach out to your counselor or your homeroom teacher to let them know you’re feeling frustrated and behind. They can help you work on a plan.
Hello everyone, around a year ago I made a review as a very upset 9th grader struggling with French 1. I am here again, to share my experiences and bring light to the school from literal hell. I want to say first off, maybe it's not fair that I'm already biased in this case, but I don't feel bad. This school literally ruined my life. When I was in 7th grade I started this school. My parents trusted I could do this by myself with no help, so I tried. Except, I wasn't aware that lessons with our teacher where we actually meet would be around once or twice a week per class. As a 7th grader, you are only 12 or 13. Do you seriously expect a 12 year old to manage their own work in a regular school, much less a school online. Sure, you could argue that some kids have learning coaches then, but the schools paints a picture that it's easy to do it yourself.
As the weeks dragged on I realized that I was screwed. I wasn't doing well in this school. I didn't know how to write notes or do homework since I didn't even know what was expected of me. If your child was given the choice to either do school or play video games, what do you think they would do? I had no enforcement and the teachers said nothing. Eventually, I realized I needed to do better. Did I do that? No. Instead, I turned to another way to lessen the burden of 7-8 lessons a day, cheating. I want to make it clear before this school, I thrived in public. I had straight As and tested out for most of my classes. Here, sure, I could be called a bad student, but in my defense you can do corrections and get 100s anyway. I finished 7th and 8th grade cheating. I don't agree with what I did, and I regret it. Yet, the school is textbook learning with little to no help, I did what I had to...
9th grade hits. I couldn't do the cheating anymore. I picked myself up from the ground and started the journey to recovery. I worked hard, and yes, I still had to beat the cheating habits. It became very rare that I would cheat, but sometimes it was necessary. They would give you tests and quizzes EVERY single day and you'd most of the time get no study guide. These tests and quizzes were after pages upon pages of information with no help. As a 9th grader I had 4 core classes to do, and couldn't spend my time on the electives. Plus, I was like 14, I couldn't focus to save my life.
Come 10th grade, this was the best year for me. I cut way back on the cheating, but here I come into an issue. My teacher would put questions we never saw before on these tests. That or they would pull questions from the first semester with no help or even a mention. The workload is insane. It's so much more than an hour per class. It's at least 2 if you are taking minimal notes. The electives are truly awful. Motivation is so low when you can just correct your tests for 100s.
I started cheating again second semester, badly. I would be so scared that my grade would suffer, since I just cared about my grades, not my mental health. I would do maybe 1 or 2 questions per test. I regret it, but if the school was truly capable of teaching children they should've helped more. My French reviews literally just say "Go back and review the material." Not to mention the fast pace and completely out of date lessons. My French lesson is literally the same age I am, 16.
I can't fully blame the school for my cheating habits, I'm stressed beyond belief, and that's my problem. The issue is this school does nothing to help mental health. In a normal school you get days to review this material and learn. Here, *against the belief of a flexible schedule* you are given pages upon pages to do each day, FOR ONE CLASS. Half the time I'm stuck on Google figuring out how to do math or science. I can't learn this way, and your child shouldn't have to either. I literally had a teacher tell me that she knows most of the students cheat. You shouldn't have a need for them to cheat, instead you should have systems where they can help instead of hurt. I take blame for my cheating, but the course load is insane. I had my French lessons literally give me no translation and 4 tests per unit, literally I had so many tests they would count for 3% of my grade.
The school needs more teachers, better lessons, and more ways to learn than textbook. I hope you don't discount my arguments based on the cheating, because let me tell you something. Probably 90% of the kids cheat. Maybe 80% if you want to not count look at notes as cheating. It's not good. I can't just read and read and read with no help or payoff for the work. Why should a student work hard if another student can get the same grades with corrections with 1/4th the effort?
If you are going to send your child here, think before you do. You need to seriously think about how much time you can help your kid with. Even the most academically gifted students can break under the intense workload, and little help from teachers. They may cheat and even if they don't their mental health will be damaged in the process. Please, if you truly care about your child, think about the implications when you click yes to enrollment.
Hi Emily, I’m really sorry to hear that you’re having a tough time. I‘d like to try to help. We do recommend that students have a learning coach to help keep them on track and assist with communication to teachers, etc. It doesn't need to be your mom or dad – it can be any adult they trust to help you. I’d also like to put your homeroom teacher in touch with your parents to see how he or she might be able to help. Can you ask your parents to email me at community@connectionsacademy.com?
We love the flexibility & opportunities available! My child is thriving and has never had better grades. It is amazing to see her master skills such as focus, time management & hard work! Great option!
Hi Chris! We are thrilled to hear that your student is thriving in academics, and also learning life skills! ~Kim
My son has attended FCA for the past 2 years and For next year I have signed my daughter up. I am very pleased with the overall experience that we have had as a parent and student. I found that my son had a lot of work to do, I noticed that his grades had a major improvement from when he was attending regular school. He was given the attention and that helped him feel more confident.
His teachers are supportive. High school can be a tough transition but they had programs and lessons that help the students through it. I found that the little quizzes that they have at the end of the lessons are good because the students can recap what they have learned through the lesson. The only thing I would suggest is that there is a way that the student could meet once a week for a fun time just the kids so they can form some friendships and exchange information so they can be friends out of school like they would at regular public school. Thanks. Florida Connections Academy.
Hi Max. It is so great to hear that your student has been receiving the attention he deserves from teachers. Before the pandemic, we offered social opportunities for students, and we are currently planning to add more social activities once the pandemic is over! ~Kim
I enrolled my children (7th and 11th grades) into Connections Academy (PA-Reach Cyber Charter) because we were not happy with our local public school's options during the pandemic. My 7th grader has fallen in love with it so much that he plans to stay for the rest of his schooling. He really loves all of the STEM opportunities, clubs, and pop up type events. He also has less anxiety not having to go to the brick and mortar school. He also loves the live lessons for all of his classes.
My 11th grader is planning to go back to the local public school next year, as she misses her friends and wants to graduate with them... But she is also very happy that she has had Reach Cyber as an option this year. She cannot imagine having to deal with all of the changes and learning curves that the local school has dealt with during this pandemic. She is very happy to have had a choice!
As a mom, I am very happy that we have had the choice of a cyber school. I love the flexibility of Connection Academy! There are a lot of live lessons but none of them are required. So, if my children have a doctor's appointment or something else going on, they can just complete their assignments later on in the day. But, at the same time they always know that there is a live lesson to go to, if they want/need to. The lessons/curriculum is challenging and there are always fun things added into school also.
Hi Brandi. Thank you so much for leaving a review. We are SO happy to hear that your 7th grader is participating in our STEM opportunities and enjoying all we have to offer at Reach Cyber Charter! We love that we can provide a safe and stable learning environment for your family. ~Kim
My son and I love Connections Academy. As a parent I feel confident that my son is getting a better education here online than he was at his local brick and mortar school. The curriculum is hands down more details and he gets much more personalized attention and feedback from his teachers and staff than he ever did in person. We used this in middle school and then again in high school. We do miss the social aspect of school but when it comes to the education it is way more efficient. The principal at our academy helped us in so many ways during enrollment and our teachers have helped us to get the best education possible. My son is in all honors and AP classes. I do wish there were more electives available in high school but you can choose to do dual enrollment at a local college which is an excellent option. I highly recommend this school.
Hi Misty! We are thrilled to hear that your student is loving Connections Academy and thriving in his education. When the pandemic has passed, we will be able to have many more in-person events so that students can still get the "social" aspect of school. ~Kim
We are finishing up our first year with C.A. and we couldn't be happier! My daughter is in her Junior year and we left our traditional school because their online program wasn't working. My daughter hated school and was failing. She now does her assignments without even needing to be asked, has all A's and B's, and was even recommended for an Honors class. We love the flexibility of working when it's convenient for her. The staff has all been amazing. Teachers respond right away when she has questions, the counselor checks in every 2 weeks, and they even reached out to me to see if we still needed the 504 plan from her previous school. Before I had to fight with her school to even get accommodations and C.A. asked me what was needed before I even had to bring it up. Even if Covid isn't an issue next year we will still be continuing with C.A. and graduating with them.
This is the best news, Ashley! So, so glad to hear that your daughter has found a good fit here and is thriving.
We decided to enroll our son in a virtual school right after the end of the school year in 2020 due to COVID-19. This was such a blessing in disguise! Connections Academy offers a challenging curriculum that is interesting and fun at the same time. Our son was in the advanced/gifted program in brick and mortar school, and Connections is able to meet his needs with the same quality classes that he had previously. They are able to cater to his individual needs, and he is still on the same pace he was before. He loves his classes, his teachers, and the flexibility the virtual schedule offers. All of his teachers make the live lessons fun and engaging, and there are so many clubs to choose from plus fun pop up events for more social interaction, fun, and learning!
If he ever needs additional help with his lessons, his teachers are always right there for him. They are more than happy to video chat, talk on the phone, or email and text too. They've been there for me too whenever I've had a question, and have been very helpful and involved. Once COVID-19 has passed, there are many opportunities to get together with other local Connections families for clubs and field trips that we'll definitely be joining. We are so happy with Connections, that we will be staying on for 7th grade instead of returning to brick and mortar next year, and foreseeably through graduation.
Hi Amie. I'm so glad your son is having a good academic year, and is exploring some of the fun parts of being a Connections Academy student, too!
My 5th grader is attending REACH Cyber Charter School which is part of connections academy. She has live lessons twice a week for science, social studies, English and math as well as math small group, English small group, art, Ed tech and physical education (1x/week for these). Her teachers are always a phone call or email away and are willing to help her when she gets stuck on a topic and I can’t help her. I love teaching her the content of the lessons and organizing it to our schedule. The curriculum is way harder than what was offered at her regular school (2 older siblings who are in high school) and she is learning to code which isn’t offered at the regular school in 5th grade either.
Through her classes, she’s becoming friends with kids all around Pennsylvania and it’s really cool to see. Kids from her former dance classes are even in REACH and they reconnected recently. Neither knew they were both at REACH. Nothing is a secret or kept from the parents. My daughter loves working at her own pace and has thrived this school year! We will be continuing on next year into the 6th grade and adding Spanish to her schedule too. We didn’t add a language this year but there is a variety of languages and music classes to choose from as well as clubs.
Hi Tara, Isn't it great that they're learning to code at such a young age?! So glad to hear that Reach Cyber is working well for your family. :) ~Kim
Upon the closing of schools due to Covid, and the re-opening of schools under difficult conditions, I chose Connections Academy for my children. That decision resulted in a positive change in the lives of my children. Connections Academy offered flexible learning, yet high quality education. I have enjoyed helping my students learn, and I am truly thankful for this school. I now play a role in the education of my children, and I have the support of amazing faculty and staff. I know we will continue this route and I thankful for the flexibility that comes with this decision. I highly recommend Connections Academy!
Hi Jennifer. We are so glad to hear that you've had a good experience this year at Connections Academy, and that you've enjoyed getting involved in your children's learning journey! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. ~Kim
I began the enrollment process for Connections Academy Jan 5 21, I submitted everything they asked for by Jan 6th. I started asking questions and calling by the 20th, and was advised that the info was with a placement specialist and I should be getting a schedule for my student very soon. I called or chatted with someone nearly weekly. Feb 5th I was asked for more info. I sent the only thing the school would give me. I called and advised that was all the school had due to their remote class recordings and escalated my concerns. I continued to call and chat with people through Feb. March 1 st, today, I was informed I missed the deadline due to not submitting all the requested documents. Even after being told they didn’t see anything else that was needed on previous calls/chats.
I had so many issues, they escalated my account to the director of schools for connections academy. But it was the principal of the school in Utah that told me “Too bad, you missed the deadline, we can’t do anything for you. But please apply next year.” I wouldn’t bother, they’ll tell you it all looks good, then blame you for not submitting something, even though you’ve done everything requested and wasted your time, just to be told, you didn’t submit everything. This is a poorly run system, they don’t communicate properly or provide correct information. Then they wait until there is no way to enroll your student to truly escalate your concerns and problems.
Hello Cassie. I am sorry we were unable to offer your student enrollment for the 2020-21 school year, and that our communication about remaining required documentation was not clear. We strive to communicate clearly with families at each step of the process, and I regret that this was not your experience. I have shared your feedback with our enrollment team. ~Kim
We decided to begin Kindergarten in an online school and chose Connections. At first, I wasn’t sure how things would turn out, but now we’ve finished our first semester and I’m pleased with my son's progress. Our teacher is amazing and overall every concern we’ve had has been answered. He’s learning and thriving. He’s used to only having play dates and church activities, plus we’ve all social distanced as much as possible. I’m very pleased and plan to continue here for the near future. We are in Alabama so not sure how other states are with their programs through Connections. Here we’ve received top-notch education and help.
My son is a 6th grade student in his second year with Alabama Connections Academy and we have been so pleased with everything about this virtual school!!! Our son is doing so well and making all A’s, the teachers and staff are so helpful and so kind to us. We are proud to be a part of the Connections Academy program. Our son loves ALCA! Our family would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a virtual school! Jennifer **, Mom/Learning Coach. Jackson ** is our 6th grade ALCA student.
Hi Jennifer, I am so thrilled to see that you and your student think so highly of our school! I hope you both continue to have a great school year! Thank you for leaving your feedback!
Both my kids are enrolled - first year at the middle school and high school. PROS: The teachers are great. They are creative, adapt the curriculum to meet student needs, and my kids are learning more than they would be at the local district. My older child takes a high level Spanish course (HS) and my younger child takes a really cool digital art class (middle school).
CONS: They don't have a music department, so there is no opportunity to participate in music. You can't participate in regional music festivals. For me, participation in district festivals was a highlight of my middle school and high school years, but for my students staying at TECCA means my children will never know this fabulous opportunity for collaboration. And while TECCA has other student activities and clubs, the club advisors don't get paid unit the SECOND year of active club participation, so the overworked teachers have to volunteer their time for free for the first year which I really find awful.
Hi, I'm glad to hear that you're happy with our teachers. While it is true that we don't have a music program, many of our students take music lessons outside of TECCA. Also, if the local district allows it, students can participate in a musical offering through them. All of our clubs start out as pilots & if they are successful, teachers can apply for a stipend. Running a club is not required - our teachers choose to start clubs in areas that interest them. Thank you for your feedback.
We're in our first year at Texas Connections Academy. 3rd Grade. First of all let me say that each state has to deal with different education laws, so pay close attention to each state's Connections Academy. We have had a great experience so far and I know he's learning more and exposed to more 3rd grade education points that Texas public in person or online from a local school. School is hard - choose which hard you want to tackle - do it yourself, self-motivate - parent motivate or send them to school and let the teachers do it all.
The Connections Academy teachers can only do so much not getting to be in the house with you. If you follow the curriculum and do the work and attend the live lessons you'll do well here. SCHOOL IS HARD AT HOME. Be dedicated to your child's education and they will respond accordingly. We recently had my son diagnosed with Aspergers and this explains why we've had struggles at home behavior-wise. With that said, He is keeping up with the lessons! He is also catching up on days he gets behind.
PORTFOLIOS are projects that take more than one day/step to complete. Follow the rubric and you'll get a good grade. The Teachers are quick to respond and are very encouraging. They even help with pep talks when your student isn't feeling his best or needs moral support. Online school isn't for everyone. We won't be doing this his entire school career. This works for us now but maybe not every year. Yes online school is hard but what are your expectations? Be involved and communicate daily and you will see results.
This is absolutely the worst online school! Just stay away! I was lured with false advertising. The workload for a 5th grader is absolutely ridiculous! It is more work than my online college classes. It takes hours just to finish one lesson. It is test after test crammed in your face. The lessons are so frustrating, lengthy, horrible, and just plain crap. They put kids on the spot and force them to answer questions in front of other students. You have to talk to teachers against your will or they put an alarm on your account! The assignment overload is ridiculous. If you want your child to succeed please do not enroll them in this school. It will take your child about 6-8 hours solid of school work just to finish all of their essay demands and tests. It is much more work than a brick and mortar school with very poor lessons.
After being bullied in school we decided to homeschool. Connections Academy boasts about its merits. We soon found out that the enrollment process lagged on their end. Then we were off to a late start. When we got our first day going we were behind two and a half weeks and expected to jump in and stay current while making up the two weeks! My daughter's first help class for math meeting, was a teacher getting frustrated and telling the kids to get on the mic and speak up with an answer or there’s no credit for that day. Nope! Left immediately and we are happily enrolled in a better program!
We decided to give this a go instead of dealing with all the new rules in school due to the corona virus. They preach about communication being key, but the teacher didn't communicate at all! They say, "It's on your schedule and your time" but after we started I was told to not touch the scheduler at all she would plan for me. First example of no communication and really the straw that broke the camel's back, we are almost done with our day and she reruns his planner and adds classes at the end of the day. Her excuse was that morning she noticed that some planners had not gone through properly but instead of informing parents she just does it and waits to be confronted. If you enjoy being controlled and having your child who once enjoyed school begin to loathe it then by all means go ahead. If not you should probably keep looking. Do not make the mistake I did and say it can't be that bad because it truly is false advertisement at its finest.
This is the most frustrating, inefficient group of management I have ever seen. My daughter attended several years and when we moved from N to S California, apparently the paperwork was not done properly so they dropped her. No phone call to say the paperwork is not correct (but of course they say they called me). In May, after all of the bright green checkmarks saying all is good to go, AND after speaking to someone from CA saying that everything looks "good to go," I assumed that everything was good to go. It is July 24th, and I just found out that we submitted one of the papers incorrectly and that she cannot attend next year because they closed their enrollment! Thank you so much for letting me know when you read the wrong paperwork! Was it some lazy worker not wanting to follow up because it is so much easier just to X the account? This is not my first bad experience with CA, but certainly my last.
The school has internet schooling down to a science yet it lacks in everything else. Most of the teachers are cold and robot-like. They do not establish a relationship with the student and students are basically forced to self-teach for all subjects. The subjects offered are fairly diverse yet material presented is subpar. The material presented does not challenge or create original thought. If your intention is to create a clone and stamp out individuality then this is the school for you. If not, anything else will probably be better.
Let me explain. I joined Connections in 7th grade. I was happy, excited even for the chance to learn from home. But honestly the worst mistake of my life. Language courses are actually terrible. They don't teach you anything, and just shove tests in your face. Every class just shoves tests and quizzes in your face. The workload is more than the hour per class promised, you end up doing hours and hours for one lesson. Not only that the work at your own pace is crap. You get yelled at with overdue lessons. Don't talk to me about teachers. They barely help you and get mad at you if you don't do it the way they want. I wish I never went there in the first place. You read about all the great reviews but consider the being away from everyone, the terrible teachers, the terrible tests (One test was 20 percent of my grade and covered stuff from my first semester 5 months ago). DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS HERE IF YOU WANT THEM TO SUCCEED.
I started Connections Academy about 3 years ago. I should already be graduated but I am now 19 going to be 20 in a couple of months in the 11th grade. Let me just start off with this school gives you no help... Portfolios are the most confusing nonsense ever, you get just one thing wrong or you don’t do it exactly how they want it in their format you get it wrong. I can’t tell you how much times I have failed classes because of one little mess up in a portfolio. We need some actually teachers to help us out and take us step by step on what we need to do.
I got an email a day ago saying that I will be unenrolled in three days because rules wasn’t being followed. Today (the next day) I am not even allowed to turn in the rest of my work... SO MUCH FOR 3 ** DAYS!! This is honestly the worst homeschool. It says you can work at your own speed, but doesn't give you the warning that they are going to pile up a bunch of work on top. Which then makes you rush, and if you don’t get everything done you get emails and texts saying you need to get this done now or it’s a zero. I was in public school and it was not near as stressful and complicated than this...
Before researching everything, my mom would always get onto me because she thought I was just slacking. Not knowing that the school piles work up on the, and then if you don’t do it on time you get a zero (which makes you fail) and if you don’t do the portfolios perfect you also fail. Lol, but that’s fine. I’m not going to let this school ruin my chance of graduating. I will find a different school and I will graduate. So, good luck to all of you that are signed up or getting signed up for this school.
We moved from Ca to Las Vegas Nv in 2019. My son signed himself up for Connections Academy. He started 3 weeks late so was already a little behind but quickly caught up. My son and I have never had any problems but this school turned into daily blow up fights! He is very smart and capable. As semester was ending I kept seeing he was FAILING Every single class, even though he was busting his butt & turning in all assignments? It wasn't until I sat down & started really seeing what was going on. He had 100% of all assignments, turned in 75% or higher on all tests yet was still failing all classes due to portfolios he had not done or done correctly.
They were confusing so we reached out to teachers several times. They'd call back and say, "I web mailed you the instructions follow them." None would actually take the time to stay on the phone and walk us through the steps which was discouraging. They said portfolios are 23% of overall grade. Turns out they are 100% of grade. My son (16) has 45/45 assignments 17/17, 36/36, etc, All 100% complete and still failed EVERY SINGLE CLASS?
After working so hard to catch up & submit every assignment/test he still failed which has made him feel HOPELESS, depressed & give UP!!! In my opinion this school set him up for failure and now he just WANTS TO DROP OUT ALL TOGETHER, DROP OUT OF SCHOOL 3 months shy of 17!!! What is a parent to do? NOW I'm feeling HELPLESS.
I enrolled my child very early and that was the start of the problems. We did the Getting Started part, My son watched the videos and took the quiz's one by one then in a couple days I would get a call stating my son did not do it so he would go and do it again, "All the while I was believing my son was lying and not doing the work after the 3rd time and punishing my son for not doing it, I completed the task with him. Lo and behold I get the call again and I told them he did it so they thought he may have left something off so we completed by this time 5 times and tech support was with us. They wanted this to be completed and we would have to wait for the information to be annotated in the system. It failed. Now mind you My son could not do any work until GETTING STARTED WAS COMPLETED even though my son now did it 6 times.
So 3 weeks later and many threats to dis-enroll my son they decided to allow him to start class and they would override the error. Now we are doing the classwork together as we started 36 lessons behind but the problems still existed. We could not complete many of the courses due to whatever was the case being we never found out even though we called many times. I watched my son complete many courses and the academy continued to have problems (I believe because my son was behind to begin it would not let many courses to be submitted but not positive.).
Finally we get a threatening message that this meeting was mandatory. After a few words the COMPLIANCE DIRECTOR said as long as my child did 6 lessons a day all would be ok) So I had my son do 8 but we now the very next day I was locked out 1 day before break, I immediately tried to call and messaged them and also had my son message them to let them know I cannot check any of his work off or turn in his hours.
Now after break we get a call stating my son was dis-enrolled due to truancy. When I spoke to registration person (BTW who could do nothing to actually help) she was there to tell me my son was basically expelled due to truancy. Now mind you I had my son logging in 6 days a week and sometimes 7 just to get caught up oh yeah and his BENCHMARKS were within the TOP 20%. I am so frustrated with this school. I punished my child and he was telling the truth all along. This School in my opinion needs to be completely overhauled. I have 2 degrees and I must say that this setup is more complicated than Bannerweb and Blackboard. Please review all options before you enroll your child here. It was the biggest mistake I made.
My kids started at Texas Connections Academy and transferred over to California Connections Academy a year later. This is a wonderful online school. Kids are not bogged down with school work and teachers keep in contact via email or text. The transfer was easy. We have no complaints and it has been a great experience for all.
I enrolled into this school in 6th grade, I was excited for it but then it started to be really hard because it's a brand new thing that I am not use to using. I struggled the whole year but I decided to stay the at Connections for the next few years and my grades went up DRAMATICALLY. I knew how the system worked so I knew what to expect. They do have a quite a bit of school work to do but you eventually just get the hang of it. Honestly, it's not hard at all if you actually read the assignments. The teachers help when you call. I still go to this school and I am now in 11th grade. Going to Connections Academy was the best decision I've ever made.
I enrolled here for 6th grade. It is hell. So much work is adding up in a pile. I also have a very short attention span for school work so I seem to drift away very quickly. I use this on my gaming computer. My computer has a high end RTX 2070 with 16 gb of DDR4 Ram and a Ryzen 7 2700X processor. It hurts me to do boring work and be so close to all the Triple A games I own. I also learn more in a 5 minute video than in a lesson that takes me 1 hour.
I started at Connections Academy in Pennsylvania in sixth grade and graduated in 2016 from CA. I’m now entering my final year in my undergrad and graduate programs and wanted to write an honest review about the middle and high school that got me here. What You Need to Succeed: Ambition, Drive, Dedication. CA is not a normal public school. In a traditional school setting, students spend their day sitting in lessons and doing assignments. They face in-person consequences if work is not completed. In cyber school this is simply not the case. Work is done when the student wants to do it and distraction is very easy to come by.
Learning Materials and Lessons:
Learning comes in three forms: through live lessons, textbooks, and/or the lesson pop-ups themselves.
- Live Lessons (LLs): A live lesson is a recorded classroom meeting between the teacher and any students who wish to attend. The teacher shares their computer screen with the students and uses a microphone and/or video feed to teach the lesson. Students can communicate directly with the teacher and other students through an active chat pod. These LLs are recorded for other students to watch.
- Textbook: CA will ship you all relevant textbooks and provide digital copies of them as well. Some classes do not utilize textbooks whatsoever (specifically for high school electives) and students must rely on LLs and lesson pop-ups for learning.
- Lesson Pop-Ups: I’m not actually sure what these are called. But basically every day the student has regularly scheduled classes that come up on their planner. Each class has an individual lesson link that you click on and a pop-up comes up. On that pop-up is an overview of the lesson, extra learning materials, activities, readings, and assignments. If you miss a lesson, they pile up and become “overdue” (though there is no penalty for overdue lessons, unless this policy has changed).
It is important to note that ALL of these are optional, and that’s where ambition, drive, and dedication come into play. Without them your student will spend the next so-many years of their education scraping by and learning nothing. My Experience & Strategy:
Middle-School: In middle-school, teachers kept a much closer reign on us in one specific way: they would often phone home, ask questions about the lessons over the phone, and ask to speak to a parental guardian. This is because it is expected that a parent be home with the student during the school day. These phone calls ceased during high school (perhaps due to age, or perhaps because school policy changed).
Overall: I never had patience for live lessons and never attended them live. I would watch recordings of LLs for my math classes only (these were invaluable). In essence, I self-taught myself for 6 years using textbooks. This has its advantages because exams and quizzes are usually word-for-word from the textbook (as the textbook authors generally write exam questions for teachers to use). It also saved me from having to watch the LLs for an hour, read the textbook, take notes, and take assignments. This is where many parents complain because their children get caught up in doing too many things. Honestly, you need to find what works for you (be it LLs or textbooks) and stick with that.
Teachers were very helpful if you reached out to them. You cannot be shy—in cyber school, no news is good news. If you are not communicating with your teachers you WILL fall behind and get buried underneath things you don’t understand. I had numerous math teachers who I could literally call when I had questions on my math tests and they would help me through the exam, but only because I reached out for help.
In addition, some teachers will use the quick checks, quizzes, and tests that are in the lesson pop-ups. In my experience many of these questions were poorly written or incorrect. If I noticed a question was out of order I emailed my teacher with the evidence and they would fix my grade if I was correct. By the time I was finishing high school many of the teachers had started making their own tests and hosting them on Google forms. This had a lot of benefits because these tests better reflected lesson material (especially for math) and test questions would change if you closed and reopened the window (meaning you’d have to start over if you exited a window accidentally). I had some English teachers who would help me navigate tricky questions one exams if I called them as well. But make sure you take exams/quizzes during business hours so teachers are available for you to call.
Is cyber school more work? Yes. It is. But it’s not as bad as some of the reviewers make it seem. When you first join cyber it is very overwhelming because you think you have to do everything in the lesson pop-ups. You don’t. Actually, for most classes, you only need to do two things: read the textbook pages assigned (usually 5-7 pages) and take a quick check (QC) (a short “test” between 3-5 questions). The other things (activities, videos, extra text) are usually irrelevant (unless it’s an English class (consider that a pro-tip)).
What does suck is that for most classes, at least in high school, you take QCs every single day, and these small tests usually make up 10% of your overall grade for the school year. Which means that your grade is on the line every day when you take a lesson. I think they instituted this policy because kids weren’t taking the QCs seriously enough and they were letting their textbook readings pile up to extreme levels.
In CA’s high school you get to take classes you normally wouldn’t. Some of the offerings when I was in school included some basic medical classes and business classes. Which means you can get a taste of what you want to go to college for while you’re still in high school. Also, scheduling is not a problem. In a brick-and-mortar school you wouldn’t be able to schedule two classes at one time, but in cyber school the “timing” of classes is of no concern.
You can work ahead or work behind. For my elective classes I would dedicate a week to finishing them for the entire semester so I would only have to work on my major classes during the year. You can also take time off if you need it and let your work pile up, or you can work ahead and finish school early for the summer (I would usually get an extra 3 weeks to my summer break as a result). You can work at night if you’re more productive, or on the weekends. Your schedule is up to you.
Drawbacks:
• No real school experience. (I have no friends from my time in cyber school and only met my classmates on my graduation day.) (You do have opportunities to join virtual clubs and go on field trips but if you live in remote areas, you’ll have difficulty with this.)• Poor communication about college credit opportunities that can hurt you in the long run (no one communicated with me the value of AP classes or mentioned CLEP exams while I was at CA, and thus I had to do catching up in college in order to accomplish my goals).
The Result: With CA I graduated high school in 2016 with over a 4.00. Because of the flexible scheduling I was able to do a lot of extracurriculars and spend time with family. Even though my parent earn too much money for me to qualify for most scholarships, my GPA and class history with CA was able to get me an $11,000-yearly scholarship to my university.
In high school I was able to take several business classes which helped me pick my majors in college (I ended up going for marketing, management, and HR). Because CA didn’t communicate with me the credit-value of AP classes and CLEP exams I had to take a full course schedule throughout college (in addition to working) and take CLEP exams on the side (8 total) to make up the credits I needed to graduate with my majors and an MBA in 4 years (through an integrate undergrad and graduate program). Overall, I can actually say I learned a lot in CA without having to worry about the pressures of a traditional school. But I had to work long hours to get there. Would I recommend it? Yes (if you’re dedicated).
When I first started this school it was great. I had to beg my parents to allow me to go to this school, and at first I thought it was perfectly worth it. I enjoyed it for about three weeks, easily would've been five stars if it stayed like that. But then suddenly after three weeks, 'work at your own pace', became non-existent as they started to overload me with assignments, AND the teachers would get mad at you. I got yelled at by my homeroom teacher (whom I will not name), for having one overdue lesson, even though I have a 504 saying I'm allowed to take my time on each lesson (even if you don't have a disability they're supposed to allow you lessons behind).
When I went to public school I would often learn things that are more advanced than my grade. My teachers have accused me of cheating multiple times, but with no proof, because I used something they didn't teach me yet... Before enrolling in this school I had plenty of friends and was really happy. After being in this school for half a year... I lost all of my friends because I was busy with school work, there is no way to make more friends with this school, I got diagnosed with anxiety and depression. My migraine problem has gotten worse and I have started to have fainting spells (neurologist says it's because of stress).
I begged my parents so much for this school and worked so hard to convince them, that they won't let me switch back to public school. I used to be a straight A student, and had never had anything under a C in my entire life. Since starting this school I barely passed last year and this year, I'm not sure if I will pass. If this school shuts down my life will instantly improve and it will be the best day of my life.
TL;DR: This school ruined mine and many other peoples lives, trust me, don't enroll in the school. If you go to Connections Academy right now, feel it out, see if you have the same opinion as me. If you do feel the same as me please leave a review so we can get this school shut down, or at least stop other people from having to go through it.
Enrolled my kindergartener and omg was this the wrong decision! The amount of homework and daily lessons given was beyond overwhelming. Click here...take this assessment. 6 workbooks, art materials, webcams and several hours of time. Way too much for my 5 yr old’s attention span. Some of the tests were a hour long! I haven’t met a 5 yr old that can sit in one spot for a hour. SMH. I would never do this again.
At first, the teachers and everyone seems so helpful and wants to get you enrolled. I specified that email is best communication, as I have very bad cell service and work from home. They say that this is not a homeschool and actually a public school but however I disagree. When my kids went to an actual public school, their grades were above average. At this school they are plunging fast and have no assistance from the teachers or principal. They even locked my parental account to submit their assignments because I didn't call them or receive their calls, when from the get-go I specified EMAIL was the best form of communication but all of the sudden that was not acceptable. Do not waste your time and send your kids here. It is more hardship and the education received is BELOW what kids need. I am withdrawing them ASAP.
Utah Connections Academy lacks the professional experience necessary to adequately meet the individual needs to its students. It took at least four years for UCA to have an assessment conducted on my son. The findings of the assessment paired the findings of an independent neurological Completed and submitted to the school, the prior year. The school called in a specialist to help with the IEP because the current team of administrators lacked knowledge of the process and failed to provide appropriately for my son.
As a result of our family’s experience at UCA, I filed a Complaint with the Utah State Board of Education. UCA has continued to openly refuse to follow through the State’s findings that would be in my child’s best interest. You are welcome to find me on FB and I will share the Complaint and Findings with you. You can also call the State Board and request a copy. If you have a child with special needs unenroll him now. If they have refused to provide assessments or provide services file a State Complaint.
Lady told me tuition to join this school for just one year would be nearly $6,000. That's nearly more than half of what I paid to get my degree for college. And not to mention if you enroll your child 3 months after their school starts, your child has to quickly catch up to ALL the work since ICA started. That's too much work.
My son was failing in the open classroom. He could do the work if someone explained it to him. He rarely understood what was required of him and was passed on to the next grade because he was not a problem. I started him at home with Connections Academy. We worked together daily online through his classes. He began to understand and work through the modules himself and for the first time experienced a success. There are many classes he can do independently but there are also several we do together. This school does require parent participation. I know exactly what he is learning. He is more confident in his abilities and learning to be more self-directed. I do have to encourage him daily and push him to complete his classes. This is a great program for children who are self directed and also good for those who need pushed.
If you are a parent who is willing to review lessons, encourage and even be the teacher some days, then this school is for you and your child. I have a website called ** to encourage parents who have their children in this program or are considering it. I have a masters degree in Informatics, which is the study of how information flows across and through systems. I think this program is one of the best I have seen at presenting information in manageable increments. I have been able to email or phone his teachers with issues and help when we are stuck. I am an involved parent and know what classes my son needs me to sit down and help him with and what ones he can do by himself. This is his 4th year with Connections Academy and he gets better and better. Every job available to our children as adults will require interaction with a computer. Allowing them to learn on one can only benefit them in a career or college.
