I have read some of the stories on this website about Capital One. My story matches these exactly. I am being charged every month for being over my limit. I can't even try to catch up. I can't pay it down enough to quit racking up the over the limit charges. Why was I allowed to go over the limit to begin with?

They force me to make a payment over the phone. All I ask is they send a statement. They can geet the terms and conditions sent to me but not my statement.

Capitol One wants to charge a late fee and this can ruin my good credit.

I'm a grad student, and I first opened my Capital One account about four or five years ago, after my first year of college. Over the years, my balance has waxed and waned, but after I received notice several months ago that they were raising their interest rates across the board (to the tune of ~16%), I decided that I didn't need to use that card anymore, but I would still keep the card open for longevity purposes. I still kept payment protection on my plan, as well as the CreditInform service, for which I have no problem paying $8.99 a month.

Well, I should have suspected trouble ahead back in January of this year when (after getting married and changing my name without incident anywhere else) it took four calls and four cards over the span of 3 weeks and 25 minutes on hold to speak with an unpleasant supervisor to finally get the right credit card with the right name on it. The supervisor charged me $16 to get the card shipped via FedEx to me (without my permission), until I insisted that each of the FOUR representatives I'd spoken to had said As my wedding gift to you, this card will be shipped via Fed-Ex at no charge to you. She finally credited my account.

So for a few months, I didn't have a balance due. After my credit had run out, I noticed that even though I was still being assessed my $8.99 for CreditInform, I didn't have a balance due, or a due date, and as such, wasn't receiving statements. (I signed up for email statements.) I called to inquire about this oddity, and the representative assured me that if it's something like CreditInform (that I didn't go out and charge to the card), I'm not assessed a balance due, or a due date, and so even if it's paid after my due date each month (the 11th), it's okay and I won't be assessed any fees/charges/etc.

A month ago, I logged in on the 16th because I'd realized that I needed to pay my CreditInform charge (since I wasn't receiving statements, it had slipped my mind) and authorized the transfer of funds. I logged into my account today (11 May 08) and saw that not only did my account due date change from the 11th to the 10th of the month, but that I had been assessed a $15 late fee for a balance of $0.08! (A balance for which I never received a statement, I might add.) I paid the balance immediately and called Capital One, absolutely furious.

The representative on the phone told me that because I had paid the CreditInform charge past what would technically have been my payment due date last month, I was assessed the payment protection fee, which DOES need to be paid on time. When I complained that I was livid that I had to pay a $15 charge on an eight cent balance that I never received a statement for, he began raising his voice to me and refused to transfer me to a supervisor, even after I insisted twice. He stated that the supervisor would only tell you the same thing that I just did. Now tell me what you want me to do. The conversation escalated to a screaming match, in which the rep insisted multiple times that I make sure I had the right contact information on the account (which OF COURSE I'd done prior to calling), that there was nothing he could do unless I told him to do it (his words: It's like a wish. All you have to do is make it), and kept telling me that if you don't pay your bills on time, you get penalized for it.

I finally interrupted him and asked him to quit undermining my intelligence, told him that I've NEVER been late with a payment for ANYTHING, and apologized to him for not being clearer that I don't think I should have to, and therefore don't want to, pay the $15 late fee. (How he didn't know this by now, I'll never guess.) I then asked him to take payment protection off the account. He took the $15 charge off the account (See? That's the only thing you had to say to me) and transferred me to the payment protection department. After I'd sat on hold for several minutes, he came back on the line and told me that they were closed, and I would have to call back at my own convenience during business hours. Between the simple fact that I was assessed the charge in the first place and the attitude that he took with me on the phone, it's a wonder that I didn't tell him then and there to cancel the card.

Even though the representative told me my interest rate wouldn't change, I don't know if I believe it. We'll see. It worries and stresses me because my husband and I are just starting out; we both have squeaky clean credit records and are working hard to build on that. Neither of us have ever been late with anything. I refuse to believe that $0.08 should be capable of tarnishing my credit history.

I have been a card holder with Capital One for many years. I have always paid off my balances each month. I have both a person card and a business card that I use exclusively for business purchases and also pay it in full each month.

In March I received, as I had many times before, offers from Capital One for specials that they had for balance transfers with 0% APR for 18 months, with a 2% transfer fee which I understood. For this one time, I decided to utilize this special offer to pay offer a large cabinetry buildout that I had done and currently had used my equity line of credit through my bank which carried a very low interest rate of 4.99%, but figuring that if I had 18 months without interest accruing this would still be a better offer.

Coincidentally, I went online to pay for what I thought would need to be paid on the actual purchases that I had made for my business for the month. Several months before I had signed up for no statements to be sent and I could just access them online when I needed to. I tried to access the statement about a week ago and was unable and thought that it was a glitch. I went online today to do the same thing and found the statements still inaccessible.

I finally called them and said I need to know the exact amount that I need to pay in order to not incur any interest charges (my payment is due on the 13th of May). They told me that I would have to pay the entire amount of the balance transfer, plus the monthly purchases or I would incur finance charges on the purchase balance, because their policy was to apply any payments first to the lowest APR and then to the highest, meaning that all of whatever I paid would be first applied to the balance transfer and then to the purchases. Therefore, they are charging the purchase rate, meaning they are now charging on the purchases, which I ALWAYS pay off every month and never carry a balance on the credit card. They said this policy is on their statements. However, I do not received statements and they never mentioned this in the letter when they extended this special to me.

I feel that this is absolutely the most underhanded, fraudulent behavior. They are telling you that they are giving you 18 months of no interest to pay something off, they have already charged a 2% balance transfer fee and now they are forcing you to either pay the entire thing up after only a month or they will assess you the interest charges on your purchases at a much higher rate.

I spoke to 5 people at Capital One and finally reached a senior account representative. She offered to send me a statement where it said this. I told her it did not say this anyway on the inital offer and this was totally misleading and fraudulent. She offered to refund 1/2 of the transfee fee. I today paid off the total balance of the credit card that was due so there would be no interest charges assessed.

I will be closing my Capital One accounts shortly but I feel that all unsuspecting credit card holders should be aware of their sneaky, underhanded dealings. I will be writing to other federal agencies as well and do what I need to in order to make people aware of this Capital One tactic. I don't know if you are able to do anything, but I will try to get the word out as best I can. I have been in business for myself for 16 years. I have an 819 credit rating, and I have never been a credit risk for any company. I feel that this is a travesty and I will make people aware as best I can.

Paid off my Capital one account with a debt consolidation loan from Regions Bank, its been 3 months and Capital One still has not credited my account. I have the Fed Ex tracking number, the signature of the person who took the check and a copy of the CASHED check. According to Capital One, they never received the money. $5,200.00!

At first they temporarily credited the account. Then we used the card and checked the next day on the transactions only to discover that the 5200 was back on the card! After calling several times to people who can't speak English the account(online) was shut down. We can't see anything now and will have to succomb to their bs tactics with their withholding payments so your late racking up late fees. I'll bet they lower our credit limit from 20000 to 5000 so we rack up over the limit fees. I have excellent credt which is now about to be destroyed because I'm paying off my debt.

Until this is resolved, we will have to pay on a debt we have already paid off, live in fear of a ruined credt rating, arguments with the wife etc. etc

I tried for several months to get Capital One to work with me; disputed the amount they said owed; they said they would send info but never did. Then today, May 10, 2008, they called three times from unknown name and no number showed up. Finally on the last call they said who they were and they were calling on behalf of Capital One. I told them I had filed bankruptcy and that they were not to call me again.

Within two minutes the number calls showing Client Services and left a message to call them about my Capital One account. I called and told them again that I had filed bankruptcy and to not bother me again. She informed me that she could bother me any time she wanted to because I owed Capital One and I told her look I filed bankruptcy so leave me alone and hung up on her.

Great emotional stress as a result of the May 10th call and conversations. These people are rude and think the law does not apply to them and their clients. Believe me bankruptcy was a last resort but it is filed and they all need to just leave me alone. I am a 72 year old woman raising two grandchildren and have to abide by laws and so should this company and all other collection agencies. Had Capital One responded directly to me and indicated they would work with me then things MIGHT have turned out different. They run fees, late fees, over limit fees, etc. up instead of making an effort to work with people.

And they would like to have me back as a customer. I applied, as I am trying to re-establish my credit, but was turned down. The reason on the letter that appeared at my house days later? Presence of a Bankruptcy! What kind of a joke is this? Use my bankruptcy as an excuse to send me unsolicited mail, and then as an excuse not to honor it?

NO HASSLE, yeah right! This has been the worst credit card. No matter what I can't seem to get ahead with this credit card. I got my statement with a due date of May 2 which is a friday, the payment is posted on Monday and they charge a late fee. Then I get another statement with a due date of May 31. I don't get it. I never received a statement for the month of April but then I'm expected to pay twice in one month.

I've complained several times and all I get from them is this is a business. They have no sympathy and are not willing to work with people. Times are tough and they are not the only ones we owe money to. All our other credit card accounts have a set due date. I only get paid twice a month and not knowing the due date makes budgeting very difficult. You get suckered in with credit cards and I should have learned my lesson the first time. I'm paying the account off and I will never have another Capital One card EVER!

In 2003 I got a credit card from Capital One. I was 18, had a pretty good job and wanted to establish good credit. I was approved for and received a platinum card with a $200 limit. After paying at least 70% of my monthly balance on time each month for four months(August - November) I get hit with late fees(2 of them) which in turn causes an over limit fee and raises my balance owed to $300. Not much, admittedly, but it makes a big difference when you're just out of high school paying credit card, car insurance and other vehicle maintenance fees.

After paying $200 to lower my balance, it ends up being over the limit AGAIN for I-don't-know-what. Customer service as many have stated was a joke. They said I could enter a payment plan and they would stop charging all the fees so I could pay off the balance. That, of course was an outright lie.

I have basically no credit history and am unable to get any credit due to the Capitol One mess. Since Capital One is the only thing on my credit report and it's a negative item, I now have bad credit (520-530 FICO) despite attempts to work with them which is made worse by the month. To date, they say I owe $1,170 on my $200 credit account. Nearly 6 times as much as my original credit limit!?! They must be crazy!! No Hassle, indeed

I opened up three credit card accounts with Capital One, sstupid me. All of these accounts where always paid on time. Actually I was in good standing until I had a layoff in 2001. But I figured I would be OK until I went back to work as I had the credit protect insurance that Capital One offered. So I sent a request out to Capital One that I was laid off and wanted to activate my insurance, that of course I had been paying for for some time.

Capital One sent me a form and said that before the insurance would make my monthly payments to them, I needed to go back to my employer and get them to fil out the form and return it to Capital One. Of course the employer would not do this, so I told Capital One this, but sent them proof of the layoff. Of course int he meantime Capital One was adding in the late monthly fees as I told them until I could file unemployment I could not make the payments. Capital One made no attempt to help. So They kept adding late fees until the point that I had over the limit fees. This continued on, even after I asked to have the accounts closed. Capital One will not close the account until the account shows zero balance.

So no I have credit cards with the following off my credit report. First credit card limit was $200. they now say I owe $1241.00 on another account the limit was $1000 and now they say I owe $3265.00. Amazing how they can do this. As the consumer you have no rights with Capital One. You request to try and work with them with no success.

So now when I try to work with capital one on a payment, I get transferred to three or four differend collections numbers before the call jsut gets dropped. I can't even tlak to anyone anymore at Capital One, as soon as they get my name or account number they drop my call. I have written letters to all the credit bureaus, to the NH Banking department whom forwarded a letter to the Richmond VA Banking authorities, who at least got a copy of all my charges and finance charges prior to lay off, interesting enough Capital One does not show how the charges when up after the layoff from my limit to the unbelievable amounts that are now on there. They closed the accounts in 2002, but still report the ridiculous numbers to the credit bureaus.

I can't get any credit. I have a good income and a good credit report except for Capital One. I have tried for the last 3 years to get a house and all the banks says your report looks good except for the Capital One accounts. These account keep my credit in the mid 500 range. I will never be abvoe to get above that until Capital One goes away on my account.

I am paying 17% interest on my vehicle because of the credit score that Capital One has impacted. I can not get a new vehicle. Even my insurance is up higher than normal as they are now using credit score to rate insurance.

I have a Capitol One credit card. I have had it for a very long time. It has a low limit which they refuse to increase. I haven't had a balance on the card since my last payment in September 2007. On March 10, I requested this account closed. I received an email back that after a billing cycle was completed, the account would be closed. After this, I emailed them again to inquire about when the account would be closed. They responded with the exact same message they had previously sent that the card would have to complete a 30 day billing cycle. I have since complete two billing cycles and sent another email to find out the exact date I could expect this account to be closed.

Again, they replied with the exact message as previously sent. I emailed again, stating apparently they did not understand the question and could they please provide a different answer as opposed to copying the previous response. They responded with the same except adding that if I had questions I could call their 800#. I did so, ended up in God knows where but the English was not very good. The person on the phone told me the same thing. It would be 30 days. It has now been two months and my account is still open. For a no hassle company, this is a very big inconvenience to cancel a card.

I haven't had any physical damage to date but will definitely advise if there are any problems caused by the delay of cancelling my card. I never knew it was such an act of Congress to close an account.

Capital One Bank, N.A. is a scam of a credit card company. They boast and advertise that they will help rebuild your credit, when inturn, they do just the opposite.

They impose fees and programs on your account that you do not ask for. When those program fees hit your account and put you over the limit, then you get charged an over the limit fee in addition to the other charges (Payment Protection & Credit Inform) that you did not request in the first place. When you want to cancel your account, they only allow you to put your account in cancellation status and will not cancel your account until there is a zero balance for 30 day period. That is ridiculous! If you want to terminate your account, you should be able to do so, on the date/day you requested without ANY further charges.

Keep in mind, a service rep will be quick to give you yet another 800 number to dial, both of these companies which are indeed also Capital One subsidiaries.

I told him, that I do not owe no reason to use my card, therefore, you people keep that hold on, becuase the is paid in full. I've only had the card for 30 days. They were lying, because i received a bill on May 2, 2008 and a letter saying the investigation ended concluding that I am responsible for the balance.

I also sent them the Fraud Information sheet along with two pieces of Identification on April 24, 2008 and still got the bill after that. I called to inquiry this today, May 5, and was transferred 5 times to a busy supervisor, whom only fraud agents answered

I'm the type of credit card customer that utilizes a card for the rewards. As a result, I had not used my Capital One credit card in over 3 years. I had been a customer for approximately 7 to 8 years with an excellent repayment history. Honestly, I'm not sure if I ever carried a balance or not.

I get a letter from Capital One this past Saturday informing me that they were closing my account. The only reason they gave is that they considered my account inactive. They had no expense to speak of with this account, as I did not receive paper statements. The bottom line is they hope I try to reopen the account so they can charge me a higher interest rate, rather than the 7.9% that was on the account. My credit score is currently 764, so they couldn't use my credit as a reason.

Can they just arbitrarily close my account without first notifying me?

If this account appears on my credit report as Account Closed by Credit Grantor, this will have a negative impact on my credit score, not to mention the fact that it was an older account, which again will negatively impact my score.

I'm not going to do it, instead I'll use that money in attorneys and sue them for credit reporting violations.

Some of the tricks they use to kill your credit score... 1- Report the account as it is been charged off every month (Score drops about 100 points permanently) 2- Report the account as a credit card past due and count the balance against the credit limits of your open accounts. (About 70 points drop) 3- fail to report Date closed and Date of last Activity this allow them to do points 1 and 2. 4- they charge 25.9 interest on the charge off but never send statements for those charges. 5- Five years latter Capital one still harasing me with the phone calls once or twice a day.

They are a bank, no debt collectors so there is no legal resource to make them stop calling I need an attorney, I am ready to file suit.

My account was behind and the over the limit, etc. extra fees mounting each month. Capital One attorney in Atlanta sent me a letter about paying off my account and reducing the amount owed. I got certified funds from Bank America and sent to their attorney in Atlanta, Georgia. This was in 2003. This past October, 2007, I was checking my credit report and found that Experian showed a judgment against me by Capital One for this account. They had managed to lie and get a Court order signed for the balance due. To date, each month they are adding interest fees.

I contacted Equifax and sent them a copy of the attorneys letter and my certified funds (thank God I kept all of this). They wrote me back saying Capital One had given them additional information and the judgment would not be removed. I have now contact the South Carolina Dept. of Consumer Affairs back in February, 2008 and after numerous letters and phone calls, they have not contacted the SC DEpt. of Consumer Affairs. They did tell me I always have the option of calling an attorney, which I intend to do so, going after them for fraud, inducement and bad faith penalties.

Has hurt my credit rating but upsets me to no end as this is out and out fraud on their part. It was their attorney who settled everything.

The check cleared my account in the amount of 1050.00, draining my savings, and creating overdraft fees (which were refunded in the end). I immmediately called Capital One, who bounced me to several different operators, all of whom insisted the check had been written in the amount of $1050, but they promised to send a refund check in the amount of $800 something (the credit on the account) later that week.

I insisted that this was not acceptable, and that I needed the money returned to my account immediately for a trip I was to take in two days. It took three different customer service representatives to finally have someone look at a copy of the check and admit that the check had been written for $10.50. Eventually I wound up going through the fraud department at my bank to get the refund, which happened quickly once they were involved, but in the mean time having my acount drained was highly inconvienient, to say the least.

When I checked the statement online, I was surprised to learn that I still have a balance of $1.68. When I paidoff my account & closed it, I should be cleared, isn't? And until now, I haven't received anything yet from them like the receipt that I requested. I would appreciate very much if you can please check this because I'm afraid that $1.68 might build up & start sending me bill. Thank you.

On 2/23/08 my wife went online to pay my monthly bill. The payment was due on 2-25-08. The website indicated any payment made before 3pm on Saturday would credit that day, anything after 3pm would credit on the next business day. The payment was made at 10am. When I received my next statement I noticed that the payment was credited on 2-25-08 and they charged my account a late for of 39.00 and an over limit fee of 39.00, because once they charged the late fee it took my account over the limit. I phoned the cs number and got a young lady with broken english, I tried to explain to her the problem, but I wasn't getting through. I asked if my wife could get on the phone and explain to her the issue, and she said I would need to add my wife to the account. I indicated that my wife didn't need to be added because I was giving her my permission then to speak with her.

Once my wife got on the phone,(she's an accountant)she told her the story over again. Well I saw my wife's face turn RED! The rep told my wife that I had sent the payment late and in the future my payment needed to be made on time. My wife had printed out the confirmation letter at the time of payment and read to her all of the info. Then the rep accused my wife of making the payment after the cut off time. At this point after going back and forth, the rep indicated that they would give me a courtesy credit for both charges since I had been a customer for over 3 yrs. That's when my wife reminded her that it wasn't our error, it was there's in the first place, so why are they acting like this is a courtesy to us. I am working on paying this card off and getting rid of them asap.

I have had a CapitalOne credit card for about 5 years. I regularly charge items for vacations in the spring. This year, I tried to charge airline tickets, and CapitalOne refused the charge, even though it was thousands of dollars within my limit. I telephoned CapitalOne and was put on hold and cut off three consecutive times. The fourth time I just kept hitting the O button until I got someone. By this time, it was Monday morning, and I noticed that my airline tickets had gone up $400-500 after midnight. After finally getting someone at CapitalOne, I mentioned that I had lost more than $400 due to their failure to answer the phone or authorize a legitimate charge.

I was then put on hold for 20 minutes (I noted on the phone when I was put on hold), and then the supervisor, Molly, came on and immediately said It is not our policy to reimburse customers for lost money on charges. In other words, in your face if we caused you to miss out on lower-priced tickets. I asked why I had been put on hold for 20 minutes for someone to tell me nothing, and Molly got even more rude. I canceled the card the next day, and my new credit card called me after accepting the charge, which is the correct way to proceed if they are not sure of the legitimacy of the charge.

I believe CapitalOne did this to me because I pay my bills automatically on time, so they do not profit from service charges or late fees. For years, I kept within their low limit (in reading these complaints, I realize why CapitalOne refused to raise my limit, because they hoped I would go over the limit so they could charge me with overcharges and increased interest). Now I think they are purging their company of people who do not incur penalties, since some of us are wise to their schemes and keep strictly within the rules. I used to think that if I did everything right, CapitalOne would not be so bad. However, I found out that if they want to get rid of you, they will do everything possible to achieve their aim.

I lost $400-500 because they refused a legitimate charge and refused to put me through to a human being for more than an hour, during which time the airline tickets increased in price.

I used long-accrued Capital One miles to buy airline tickets to the UK. The week prior to traveling to the UK, I called to get a PIN so I could use my CapOne card to get cash in London. The first person I spoke to (located outside the US) had no idea how to help me, and when she went to switch me to her supervisor lost the call. I waited a couple days and tried again, and the next time got someone competent who addressed my concern promptly.

When I got to the UK, I used the card once successfully, and then had it turned down twice. I called CapOne collect, as instructed on the back of my card, only to have the charges refused! I then asked my wife back in the US to call CapOne to find out what was going on. She had the same experience as my first call to CapOne (incompetence + disconnect). On the second call she was told that CapOne was issuing us a new credit card because fraud had been noted. When she told them that overseas use was me, they told her that I hadn't informed them that I was going overseas, and therefore the card wouldn't work. (You mean I have to ask permission to generate revenues for them?) She pointed out that I had bought tickets through them and called about using my card overseas to get cash, but they didn't seem to care / notice.

So what's in my wallet? Certainly not Capital One.

Time after time I explained that they needed to called his business NOT his home, to no avail. I asked to be transferred to a supervisor and was left on hold (at least twice). THE CALLERS WERE TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL AND NOT AT ALL INTERESTED IN THE FACTS. I finally realized that the only point to these calls was HARRASSMENT. Is this legal? Is there any course of action? WE do not and will never obtain a card from Capital One. The company's behavior was disgraceful and absurd.

My son broke down on the way to washington and needed to by a new car. the dearship in Virgina needed $800.00 by Monday. It was Friday so I decided to place this charge on my capital One card. The day before, my wife's Mom died and shee needed to frly to Michigan. I again placed this charge on my Capital One card. On Saturday, my son and I also flew to Michigan to attend the funeral. Again I placed these charges and a car rental in Detroit on my car.

On Monday I took my wife and son to McDonald's for breakfast. I found my Capital One card did not work. Supdequently, I tried to buy gas and again found that my card did not work. When I got back to my mother-in-law's house I called Capital One. I was told that my charges appeared fradulent. As a result, my card was locked but they would restore my access to it. Latter that evening my wife called about a charge she place ond my card to hold a motel room for her two elderly aunts who were in town to attend the funeral. She was told that the card she had was out of date and was routed to the Capital One fraud dept. The fellow there was very rude and said to my wife that because she had a old card which by the way didn't expire for over a year he had to lock our card and we could not get access to it until we could prove who we were. The following day I was not available and my wife called back and was again routed to the fraud department. There she was asked a number of financial questions, some of which she could not answer.

As a result, our case was routed to another fraud organization within Capital One. She was told that this organization was only availabel between 8 AM and 8 PM. As it was too late and she was so frustrated with the run around Capital One was giving her. She asked if I couuld call the following day. The next day I called and was told that I needed to FAX Capital One a copy of my driver's licence, a copy of my W2 form and a copy of my latest utility bill. Prier to this, I had already provided them with my address, SS#, birth date, home telephone number, and a bunch of other personal information. I asked the representative, How do I know that the information I am being asked to FAX to you will be held in confidence? He said I should take his word for it but if I wanted to prove I was talking to a Capital One representative, I should call the number on the back of my card and ask to be forward to his department.

Subsequently, I did so and the lady who answered me said the department was closed. I asked for the phone number for that department and was told she could/would not give it to me. I had been given the number earlier by the other Capital One representative. When I asked why she couldn't give it to me she wouldn't answer. I told her I had the number and if she could confirm it for me. After considerable hesitation she said it was indeed the number of the fraud organization. The next day I tried to FAX Capital One them the stuff they requested and found that there FAX line never answered.

In summary, I and my have been treated like crooks by Capital One. Without my charge card, I would have been left abandoned by Capital One in Detroit. Lucky for me my ATM card is also a VISA card (not Capital One) and I was able to get home and pay the Parking fee at my home airport. My wife on the other hand was left with no money. I had to send here a personal check so she would have money to get home. In all the years I have had charge cards, I have never been treated as badly as I have been by Capital One. There people are very rude and treated me as if I were a criminal. My card says Capital One is Hassel free. I for one can say this is a total un-truth. I would say only use your Capital One card as a last resort and better yet, get a card provided by another vendor.

This is the letter I have sent twice to Capital One Corporate, so far no answer.

We applied for your credit card for our daughter, Elizabeth, who is a pre-med student at Elon University. We wanted her to begin to become experienced with managing credit and using credit in her own name. I chose your company since I have credit cards with you and like your terms. Our experience with her card has been an exercise in frustration. First with trying to communicate with Indian and Philipino customer service reps who were barely understandable, and then with your experienced CSRs who have proven to be inflexible and apparently uncaring, and finally, with inflexible rules that fail to credit payments made electronically.

When it became evident our daughter would exceed the $500 credit limit you initially gave her, we implemented an electronic payment from her account, to head off any over limit charges. All payments made by our family are done by electronic transfer from our bank accounts. When this payment for $408 did not appear on her account within a few days, we called our bank who advised us that you did not accept the electronic transfer and they had to send you an electronic check. So, based on your customer service representative advice to make the payment directly on your web site for immediate credit, I went on-line and made a direct payment via your web site for $200 on 1 March 2008. This was immediately posted but did not change her available credit. The payment of $408.00 finally appeared in her statement on 6 March, but still was not reflected in her available credit.

I called and was advised by your senior CSR that you had placed a hold on this payment for 10 days citing the rule that this was a new account even though this check cleared her bank account on 7 March. So I again went to your web site and made another payment for the full balance due of $342.01 which was shown on her account on 7 March, giving her a ($222.43) effective credit balance. Checking today, her available credit was still showing as 0.00! Again I called your senior CSR who informed me that you had placed a 6 day hold on this electronic transfer! What kind of credit card is this? A debit card would be more useful. If you are seeking to enroll credit worthy clients, this is hardly the kind of service that will do that. This has been an exercise in frustration. Someone in your management chain needs to examine these procedures and join the electronic world of finance.

Capital One simply uses our money for 7 to 10 days after recieving it before truly crediting it on the balance. My bank confirms they received the funds, but they wait 7 to 10 days before reflecting this in the available credit.

I talked with supervisors, their fraud department etc.. I finally got a sympathetic soul who after much badgering agreed to remove the charge from my card. Simply absurd.

I was on the internet trying to file a complaint against Capital One bank when found site after site loaded with people complaining about Capital One. What got my attention the remarks they made about the foreigners who answer the phone for Capital One. It makes me wonder, are these people here in this country or Capital one hiring cheap labor somewhere else outside the US. And these foreigners have access to my personal information? No wonder I have all these problems. Last December Capital one sent me a letter informing me that they put restriction on my account because someone took over my account. I tried to call to find out who took over my account and could not get an answer.

I called 20 times and each time they told me I have to speak to a certain department and put me on hold and no one ever picked up. Few times I got a recording asking me to leave my name and number and someone will call me back. Then I received a call Batty at the fraud department . When I finally got hold of her she was absolutely arrogant and abusive. She was not someone who is cooperating or trying to help me fix the problem they caused. The woman had a very heavy African Accent and was hard to understand. She insulted me and I insulted her back. Then Batty decided that the account would be closed. By this time, I had not received statements for two months and I could not access the account online. I could not get any information on the phone because they forwarded me to Batty even though I asked to speak to someone else because of the conflict we had, but I was always redirect it to her.

I finally received a statement in February with a different account number with a balance of $126.33 and a letter informing me that they completed their investigation and that I was responsible for that amount. The statement showed a previous balance of $ 50.00 and new charges of the difference on the statement and there was no description of the new charges. I sent Capital one a letter asking to send me a description of the new charges since I could not use the account for three months and I had no access to any statements. I asked a simple question, what was charged? They never answered that question and each month I received a statement with late fees.

Now the bill is more than $200. That account was paid off completely last year and I had the records to prove it. I paid the balance and there was no interest accumulated because it was paid before the grace period each month. I believe Capital One exposed my personal information and probably other people information. They were so defensive when I asked questions and I had never received any answers. If there were charges, what are the charges? They failed to submit a legitimate statement describing the charges the account incurred in January and February which was the time I could not use the account and I had no access what so ever to the account information. I lost my right to dispute one or two charges that were listed on my account. I dont owe Capital One. They owe me and I want a fair chance to be able to dispute the charges on my account which I already paid.

    Identity theft and bad credit.

We applied for and received a credit card from Capital One in February 2008. This was an interest free offer until October. 2008. In the original application there was an offer for free balance transfers. During March, 2008, I called customer service and inquired about the balance transfer. They assured me that there would be no interest, and no fees associated with a balance transfer until October 2008. I then made arrangements to have a balance transfer from another credit card in March. A Finance Charge was registered on both the March and April statements.

At first it was very difficult to speak to a customer service representative, and only did I get a number by calling new card applications. I spent two and one-half hours finally ending up with the senior manager Dave. I spent an hour talking to him about our being misinformed, and only received a one page statement with no details of agreements documenting a 3% transfer fee . The same was true with the customer service representative who said there would be no fees associated with this transfer. This fee remains on our over all balance and is calculated monthly.

If you pay any amount to Capital One, they first deduct payments from any purchases, that are in fact interest free. In turn you receive a monthly monthly finance charge based on the 3% of the actual transfer. Here lies the deception. You pay monthly finance charges because you transfered money. The second part of the deception is that even if you pay off your over all balance, you first have to pay off all purchases, then when that is done, you will then be credited payment of your transfer, and will continue to accrue interest on the transfer until your entire account is payed off. Dave would not budge on eliminating the transfer fee for the first year, and said he had no choice. Other credit cards that have misinformed on finance charges have immediately corrected them, namely American Express and Lowes Credit Card.

As I spoke to Dave my wife pulled up this web site, and I began to finally understand I was not alone, and realize there are many others who either were misinformed, or were deceived. I am recommending a class action lawsuit against Capital One for deceptive advertising to protect consumers, and to have financial compensation. Keep details of all your correspondence with names, telephone numbers and dates along with what you discussed. IT is easy to forget your conversation, so keep records and detail conversations. WITH CAPITAL ONE Perhaps reconsider WHAT'S IN YOUR WALLET, with, THINK ABOUT YOUR WALLET - if you still have one.

The resultant damages are an additional financial burden that harms us on a fixed income, and cause major problems on a tight budget. This also causes emotional distress as we have always maintained good credit, and pay our bills on time. This action harms us financially, and causes monetary problems. We would have never made this transfer if we had been fully informed. It is a sad legacy that a huge company such as Capital one has done this to consumers.

While he has not yet activated this card, when we called to find out about closing the account we were told he would have to be the one to call. When asked who was responsible for paying the bill, we were told they could not answer that question either, but they could tell us that there is no age limit to apply for a credit card. This kid has no job and no way to pay for any charges he may incur.

We would like to know how a credit card company can get away with this type of ridiculousness and who would be responsible if our son did not pay for any charges he makes? If Bank One feels this young man qualifies for a credit card, then they can deal with him and him alone, to pay for any charges! How can they give a card to a person who cannot even prove they have an income or even a credit history? And we wonder why the economy is the way it is. This unscrupulous company needs a reality check.

We have contacted them in the past when our son has received offers for credit cards from them and asked them to remove him from their mailing list because he is a MINOR! We were told it would take 6-8 weeks for that to happen. Apparently it never did because he thought he would be sneaky and brilliant and try to get a credit card. Can someone PLEASE let us know how they plan on making an unemployed 15 year old teeanager responsible for paying his credit card bill? How can it possibly be legal for them to give credit to a minor? Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Capital One is saying that a payment 27 days early is much too early to be considered. Instead of applying the payment to the April due amount, they applied it to the end principal, and now they are charging me a late fee ($30).

This is not the first time and the fees force my low limit balance to over the credit limit ($30). With such a low credit limit, these two fees in one month starts a vicious cycle. I am writing you today because I feel that Capitol One has been pulling some fast ones on its credit card holders. Myself, being their latest victim. Perhaps I should start from the beginning. On March 20th I attempted to make an automated payment to Capitol One for $300.00. The attempt failed. A red note popped up on the screen saying the system was having difficulties please try again later. I waited until the next day, and it said my $300.00 transaction was successful. The following day, I notice in my checking account that the first transaction for $300.00, did in fact go through. Now, Capitol One has withdrawn $600.00 in two days from my account. I immediately get on the phone with Capitol One who apologizes for the mistake, but then informs me that this is my fault for not double checking before making the second payment attempt. Call me crazy, but when my credit card company tells me that my transaction did not go through, I am pretty likely to take their word for it.

Nonetheless we have a conference call between the Capitol One Account Manager a rep from my bank (Associated Bank), and myself. I am told this refund check will be processed in 5-7 days, and will receive the check within ten days from that. Now we get to the good part. After the initial 20 days is up I call the company...again. Mind you, my first phone call with them lasted around 1 hour 7 minutes, just to get my own money back. So, I call AGAIN! This is when I am informed that it will take up to 20 BUSINESS days. Fine, I think. That makes sense, but should have been stated in the initial phone call. 20 BUSINESS days from March 22 come and go, still NO CHECK! So, I call AGAIN. I am now told that the processing didn't actually start until March 25th. Why I ask, to which they have no answer. Now, I am very upset. I am beginning to feel like I am not getting honest answers from these people. So, I express my dissatisfaction with this whole ordeal, and wait a few more days.

NOW, it has been 20 BUSINESS days from MARCH 25TH and STILL NO CHECK!!! I understand $300 is not a lot of money for capitol one. but I am 26 years old. It is still A LOT of money for me. But, I decide I will give them a two day grace period....for good measure. Today the grace period ended. I received my mail, and no check from Capitol One. I call, you guessed it YET AGAIN to which I am now told by an Account Manager that she sees no record of this check ever being processed ever leaving Capitol One, that basically it doesn't exist. No, I am livid. I insist on speaking to her supervisor, who I tell my entire story to, and now magically sees in her computer that the check was mailed out March 25th, and she can't imagine why I have not received it yet. Which if you refer to the original time table, makes little sense. And why is it the first woman was apologizing because they check had never been issued, and yet the second I through a date out at the Account Supervisor, she grabs that date and insists that the check was mailed out then, and this must be the mails fault. She then informs me that she will put a stop payment in the last check and will have a new one sent out within, you guessed it 5 business days. And should expect it shortly after that. Just as long as it doesn't get lost in the mail again.

You know what my favorite part is? Within the last month that I have been waiting for MY OWN money back, I have received my bill from Capitol One, and notice that they are raising their service fees. Those made their way to my door no problem, but this check...got lost in the mail. What makes me laugh even more if you go to www.consumeraffairs.com/credit_cards/capitol_one.htm you will find pages of customer complaints from Capitol One card holders, and on from 4/15/08 from Mary from San Luis Obispo CA...who is having almost the exact same problem as I am. Well, at least I am not alone. I am not sure what good this information is to you, but I felt like it was something you might like to know. The sad thing is, here I sit waiting for my money back, and there they stand, so unwilling to give it back, and there is nothing I can do about it. Thanks for reading.

Short and sweet. Credit card was dropped at a store and did not know it. Over 1100.00 was charged to the account. Capital One sat on it for a month before I mentioned the OCC and State Attorney's office. They reimbursed all but finance charges, insisting they did but the billing statement said otherwise. Contacted the OCC, Office of the Controller of Currency, filed my complaint and the rest is history.

Capital One had to reimburse ALL of the late fees, overdraft fees and finance charges and they still stated they were in the right to do what they did but as a good jester they removed all the fees and hope we stay with them. All this to take place was over a three month period but it was well worth the wait. One bit of advice. Make sure you make some sort of a monthly payment to the account while all this is going on. This way they cannot come back and tell the OCC you are not making any payments to the account. Bottom line is you look good and they look very bad.

I explained to the representative of Bleier, that the original balance was $758.00 and that after I paid the $758.00 I wanted an re-evaluation of the proposed delinquent amount of $1458.00. Mr. Wiggins sent me a confirmation letter stating that the law office would re-evaluate my payment arrangement on 10-15-2007. I never heard from Bleier law offices until I decided to stop making payments in March 08.

Mind you I made payments of $125.00 from 7/07-2/08. On Monday 4/21/08 a representative from Bleier called to inquire about my payment for March 08, I told them that Mr. Wiggins was supposed to contact me regarding a re-evaluation of the delinquent balance, and that I was waiting for the phone call. I asked the representative how much was owing on the account and she said $800.00. I blew my stack, the original amount that was sent to collection was $758.00, and now I owe additional fees that were not included in the correspondence that was sent to me. I did have credit protection on this account.

Was intending to use it for the specific zero % for 12 months rate on balance transfers specifically noted in the mail solicitation of pre-qualified credit risks. Had no idea it was all phony and would mysteriously disappear, just like some of your correspondents here reported happening to them!

Bless you for hosting this site and warning people. (Also, bless Google for bringing it up so high when anyone searches CapitalOne.) They asked me to call back the following day. I called the following day and they assured me that they would be able to cancel the balance transfer and I would not be subject to the 3% fee. They asked that I call again the following day to be sure that they could stop payment. I called the following day and they said it was all set and that I would be receiving a letter confirming the stop payment.

CAPITAL ONE SNAFU. Over the weekend (Saturday) I tried to make a payment online on my account. First it told me I had to put in my bank info (which had been there for years). So I tried a different way to pay on-line (same site) and got through. However, when I went to approve the amount, I got a RED NOTE saying they were experiencing difficulties with my account and could not process it. On Sunday I tried again to make a payment, and once again I got the red note saying it could not be processed. On Monday morning I checked my Cap One account on line and both payments were processed. I called Monday morning and spoke to Melanie. I told her I needed someone to troubleshoot my account because of the difficulties I had and wanted to have one of the payments returned. She was helpful and called my bank and we both spoke to a rep who assured me that no payments had gone through and there were no presentments. Melanie put me on hold to fix my account.

Suddenly Ashley came on line, and after I explained that Melanie had all the info and was working on my problem, she assured me that there was NO WAY I could be put back in touch with Melanie. (If they can look up someone else's notes, why can't they track them down? Surely they have an employee number they have to put on their notes?) So I had to re-explain everything all over again. She didn't do anything and I felt she was rather surly. Tuesday I checked my bank account online, and both payments to Cap One had been deducted. I called Cap One again and this time I got Brandon. I explained what had happened on Monday, and he gave me the obligatory I'm sorry. Then he gets my bank on line and she tells him that both payments have gone through. THEN he tells me that Capital One will send a RUSH check to me. I said why don't you just credit my account? and he said they couldn't do that. WHAT?

They've been able to reverse amounts before. Then he said I would get my check within 5-10 business days. I said 5-10 business days is not RUSH. But Brandon assured me that's the best they could do. I told him if I got charges on my bank account because of this they would have to pay. Brandon told me that Cap One was not responsible for these charges. If they're not, than who is? They're the ones who screwed up my account on line to begin with. So now I'm waiting to see what transpires from this CAP ONE SNAFU. Their line in their commercials What's in your wallet? could surely be answered less money when you deal with Capital One!

I'm waiting to see. I have outstanding checks that will come in long before 5-10 business days and surely put my account in the red.

We fell victim to evasive marketing. My wife and I have used a Capital One credit card for years. We use it for basically everything due to its convenience and to accumulate redeemable points. We religiously paid the card off every month.

We recently received an unsolicited zero percent offer from Capital One. The well defined terms were to get zero percent for 18 months in exchange for an up front 2% transaction fee. The offer talked about a separate segment being opened on our card. The separate segment reference led us to believe we could continue to use the card the way we had always used the cards on our primary segment of the card. We decided to transfer our 7% home equity load to the card.

However, I failed to read the fine print. The well hidden catch was all payments will be applied to the lowest interest rate segment first. Therefore, any other charges applied to the card for 18 months would be charged interest while we pay off the transferred home equity loan.

When the first bill showed up after the 0% offer transfer was accepted, it did not look right to me. After talking with two levels of supervisors at capital one, we were told there is nothing they could do for us. Apparently they do not value good customers who pay their bill every month.

Before we discovered the details of this sham, we had already placed a month of our normal purchases on the card. Several of the charges were sizable since we bought airfare and incurred other expenses related to preparation for a vacation. That single month of charges will now reside on the card accumulating interest until we pay off the large 0% transfer we made.

Aggravation has been the biggest cost so far. We have already shredded our cards and will never use it again. In the end Capital One will loose a long standing customer which paid their bills religiously every month - maybe just what they want!

We responded to the call in application phone number and specifically asked for a JOINT account. She said sure, and took my information. I asked if she wanted my wife's information and Nicole Minter said I would have to wait for my card and then sign my wife up as a user. I said that doesn't sound like a joint account and then she informed that it wasn't. I told her that if it wasn't a joint account that we didn't want the card. Nicole Minter informed us that the application had already gone through and that there was nothing that could be done. She gave us a customer relations number to call.

After a series of automated responses customer relations gave us another number that sent us back to applications. After another round of automated responses the applications dept. said we would have to wait until we actually got the card in hand and then we could call up and cancel.

Further, if we wanted to have a Joint account we would have to do several steps to get a Joint application we could send in. My complaint is that we were mislead to believe we were getting a Joint account, and then find out it was processed faster than I could say the word Yes but couldn't be canceled without considerable effort. I would recommend that Capital One be avoided.

Oh, and for anyone who might be considering entering into a debt repayment plan with these yahoos, be sure to read their agreement letter very carefully. You will find they commit to NOTHING! What started out as a $700 card now has a balance of over $3000 - at the time they filed judgment against me. Even after the judgment became a matter of public record, they continue to send credit card offers. And now they threaten garnishment. If I had the money, don't they think I would have paid them before now? So, I ask you, remember those barbarian ads they ran a hundred times a night on the TV a few years back? Guess we know who the barbarians are now, don't we?

First off, my credit suffered and I lost a bank account. It was closed due to my credit score. I made a good faith effort to pay Capital One through a credit counseling agency. I know the agency paid my creditors on time, because the balances on the other cards dropped as payments were credited on time. Capital One, however, held payment till past the due date so they could jack up fees and interest. When I tried to pay them on my own, they increased the interest rate to about 26% and the monthly interest alone was $175. I earn about $11 an hour on less than a 40-hour week, so keeping the payments up was a burden. But no soon did the ink dry on one check than they had someone calling demanding more! I tried to explain what was going on, but did they care. Send more money - that was their mantra. Last fall Capital One hired a law firm in Phoenix - Jerold Kaplan - to file suit. They did and won the judgment. Now they threaten garnishment. I can't win, no matter what I do, which recently has been nothing. I am totally defeated.

I recently applied for a credit card through Capitol One. As I was trying to activate my card the customer service rep asked me how much I paid for my car loan each month. Since the car was a gift, I did not immediately know the answer. After rushing me through a few more questions he stated I had to fax my SS card, driver's license and copy of a bank statement. He assured me I would receive a phone call shortly after that. Shockingly, after submitting all that information I never heard back.

That evening I called Capitol One where I was transferred to the fraud division. After a 30 minute hold I finally spoke with someone regarding my account. I verified nearly everything for her and let her know I faxed documents in as well. She said the lady who had that fax was at dinner and would call me when she returned to the office. Once again, I never received a call. Finally I went to a Capitol One bank near my house. The banker there was very understanding and supportive. I brought my DL, SS card, W2s with my current address and even a copy of my credit report. I arrived at 1:50 PM (the bank closes at 2 PM) and he let me stay until almost 2:45PM. The entire time we were just being bounced back and forth between various customer service people. He tried to verify my documents for them and they kept saying ok, please hold for on moment followed by an endless hold. Apparently a banker's opinion is not enough evidence to prove my identity and address. This, by far, is the worst customer service I've ever experienced. I have no idea how Capitol One is able to stay in business, much less make any money.

WOW, what a hassle to speak to a real HUMAN BEING at Capital One. Took me 30 minutes to go through the maze of menus and not ONE option was to SPEAK to a customer service rep. I finally went to the cancel an account menu and found a real person, naturally! To think I was contacting them to notify them of an unusually large purchase I intended to make and I nearly cancelled the account because I was so annoyed. Here's a hint, to avoid the annoying phone menus, just press #, and keep #ing them until you get a real person. The man I was speaking to had to do that just to get me transferred to the Fraud dept, so they could note my purchase. Then to annoy me a little bit more the woman in the fraud dept acted like...yeah so what, you're making a big purchase. Unless they address this petty annoyance I seriously doubt I will keep this card!

Seems that a social security card, driver's license, birth certificate, copy of utility companies are not enough.

Cannot file taxes because I have no form showing interest earned from this account. Never have been able to get an account #. In May of 2004 I received a phone call from Capital One demanding payment. I was told that I owed them $80,000. (I am not making this up.) I had a $300 credit limit. The best is they were saying that the charge was at the convenience store up the road. I never made this charge. It was fraudulent. I looked at all the paperwork for the convenience store. They didn't have the $80,000's nor did the paperwork show that type of charge. I also spoke with the gas company. The gentleman there told me what to do. He had checked everything from his end. Also, since I had not received a statement, Capital One had no legal right to contact me demanding payment. After talking with them on the phone and getting a lawyer involved they finally admitted verbally that it was an error and they would take it off. They also informed me in the initial phone call that it had already been reported to the credit reporting agencies. However, when they finally admitted their error they again verbally agreed to contact the credit reporting agencies and take it off. This is almost 4 years later and they still have not taken it off. It still shows high balance of $80,000's.

Capital One lied - they are still ruining my credit almost four years later. I contacted the credit reporting agencies. They let me know that they contacted Capital One and Capital One told them they can't get in touch with me. That they are not taking it off. Well the consequence is that I now have the name and address of Richard D. Fairbank President of Capital One and I will be in further contact with him. I no longer have the paperwork from 4 years ago as our house burnt down with the paperwork in it. So now I have to rely on what I received from Equifax. I would appreciate being contacted by an attorney and join a class action suit. I need help. I need them to take this off of my account. Equifax has my phone number and Capital One can get it from them. I am willing to settle this peacefully. I am sorry that I trusted them to take care of this back in 2004, I have learned my lesson. Do not trust corporate America. You cannot speak to Mr Fairbank that is what I was told in 2004-he doesn't take phone calls or speak to anyone. I know I have a legal complaint. I received a bill for $26.09 for interest charged, after I sent in the full amount quoted to me by their employee. I called again, just keep getting people in a call center in India, who tell me the account has to cycle. Why is it cycling when I paid it off and shredded the card? Now they told me that the card will cycle TWO months, therefore they will be adding another finance charge next month. They refuse to cancel the card. I've told them verbally on the phone to cancel the account and written letters. I even got a refund from them for $20 and a letter stating the account was closed, but in very small print, would have to cycle out. I can't get them to close the account and do not want to be billed over and over for finance charges.

This has made me an emotional wreck. Not only am I in a financial hardship that I'm trying to get out of on my own, they are adding to the hardship with their fees. I have had nothing but good service from Capital One, and I use their credit card for all my purchases. I make a payment each month that is equal to, or over the amount owed and I make that payment on time. After reading several of the other complaints listed here, I have no doubt that some of them are correct; but some of the others sound contrived. I have always found that if one has credit, then abiding by the rules, ie; be conservative on charges, and pay on time--is the best way to avoid all the problems that may arise later.

We used the offer and transferred a $14,000 balance. There was a $280 charge on the initial transfer amount which was fine since we would be saving more than that with the 0% interest for 18 months. The first bill came in after the transfer and we again paid in full all our monthly charges. We also paid an additional $700, with a seperate check (from another checking account), to be applied to the $14,000 balance transfer.

The following months statement came in and we noticed a $33.18 finance charge. I called Capital One to ask how their could be a finance charge since I paid our monthly transactions in full, just as I always have, and then also included another payment of $700 on the 0% balance transfer. Their response was that they divert the payments to where they want (paraphrasing). I explained to them that they were essentially diverting payments to deliberately run up finance charges when I am paying my bill in FULL and including another payment of $700 on a 0% transfer offer. I explained to them how this was completely misleading and unethical, and asked for a credit of the initial $280 finance charge and the subsequent $33.18 finance charge. They said this was not possible, which is why I am looking into what options I have in filing a complaint with someone who might have oversight in such matters.

The reason was that I didn't have the security code on the back of the card. SURPRISE, since it had been stolen. I understand there is a code for a reason, but they told me to hold for someone with the authority to ask me security questions, someone else would answer and they too, were unauthorized to ask me those questions.

He took all of my information for the bill via phone conversation, to apply that credit for the month of Jan. At that time nor at any other time have I ever been 30 days late. When the representative took the money over the telephone I was 10 days late, and I had already input the information on the computer to pay it; but he convinced me to pay it with him. I had $105.00 in late charges that had accrued for 10 days late on the car note. However, none of them were 30 days late. I had perfect credit. Instead of the representative asking if I wanted to apply $105.00 in late fees to the car note, he took it upon himself to apply $105.00 in late fees and did not apply the full $671.05 to the car note. Capitol One then decided to contact the 3 Credit Bureaus and say that I was delinquent in paying them for a one-time 30 day on the credit report.

I was in the process of getting approved for a mortgage to refinance my properties in which I have an ARM, and they will mature in a couple of months. When the loan officer pulled the credit report, the loan was denied because of the information on the credit report. I spoke with a Manager named KBO on 3/1/08 and spoke with her in depth; and she agreed that the person who took the information down in Jan. was wrong to apply monies to late fees without my consent, and that the entire amount should have gone to the regular monthly fee. She was writing the information down to the Operations department to have them to remove the derogatory information off of my credit report. However, that has not been done, and I desperately need to refinance my properties immediately. What can I do legally to eradicate this from my credit report? I spoke with two Supervisor's, and they both agree that Capitol One was at fault.

As a result I have lost two loans for refinancing my mortgage at my primary residence and the mortgage at my rental property. I had also applied for a job and was denied because of the credit score.

Well, I received another statement for the 2/09/07 due date, so I sent in a $50.00 on 2/7/08 and checked the status of my payment. That's when a customer service rep told me the payment was late, and they charged me a $39.00 late fee. I told her I only live 2 states away; I know it shouldn't take 3 days for a payment to get to Maryland to North Carolina. She stated she was sorry and she waived the late fee. On February 22nd I sent in another $50.00 payment, and when I called in to check to see if the payment posted, the CSR told me the $50.00 went towards my finance charge. I got irate with her, and told that it's too early for her to give me that charge, so I ignored it.

On March 1st I called the auto-mated line to check my balance, and it stated that my monthly statement bill was $220.89, so I sent in the money order for $220.89, certified via mail. I thought that I paid the thing off. I called them today to see if they received the payment; and they did, but they had put an additional $28.00 over-the limit fee on my credit card. I got really upset with that CSR rep and told her that I will send in my $28.00, but If another charge shows up on my paid in full credit card ,she will hear from the attorney general, the Federal Trade Commission and the BBB. All I have to say is this card will never be used again. My advice to everyone who is having this issue with Capital one is to cover yourself by sending all payments and letters correspondents via Certified mail!

Because of this late payment, it ruined my chance of getting a credit increase within my 90 day period.

On the following day (2/16/08), I placed a call to Capital One's customer service (800) number to confirm receipt of this payment, as it did not show when I looked it up online. The representative I spoke with informed me she did, in fact, see the payment and would apply it to my account. What she did, however, is ERRONEOUSLY APPLY A SECOND PAYMENT OF $811.40. When this was brought to my attention, at a later date, I called to inquire as to why my account was now showing NO AVAILABLE CREDIT. It was explained to me that because I had made such large payments so close together, the MONIES WERE BEING HELD FOR SECURITY REASONS and to protect me, the customer. I questioned the term PAYMENTS SO CLOSE TOGETHER, as I knew I had only authorized one payment. I explained to the representative that I had only owed $811.40 and that I would not have made two payments for that amount, a total of $1622.80, especially when my credit limit does not go that high. I was assured this mistake would be looked into, rectified and all monies belonging to me would be returned to my checking account.

To date, this has not occurred. As such, I have had to delay payment on a couple of other debts-- incurring late fees and additional surcharges and even borrowing money from family members, putting myself deeper in debt. When I look at my Capital One account now, I also see they have again attempted to rob me by charging a late fee of $39.00 to my account on February 19th, despite my making a complete payment on February 15th, not to mention the $811.40 they had illegally withdrawn from my checking account on February 16th. I have contacted Capital One electronically through their account message feature, demanding they remit to me the amount of $811.40. Capital One merely replied with a generic form letter, telling me to call them as they would be happy to help.

While mistakes are only human, it is my opinion that ONCE YOU SEE CLEAR EVIDENCE OF THE MISTAKE MADE, ALL EFFORTS SHOULD BE MADE TO PROMPTLY RECTIFY THE SITUATION especially where someone's money is concerned. Capital One was very quick to TAKE my money; yet when it comes to returning the MONEY THEY HAD NO RIGHT TO TAKE IN THE FIRST PLACE, there's a major delay. I believe CAPITAL ONE IS STALLING, in spite of all the money they have, and USING MY MONEY FOR WHATEVER EXTRA GAIN IT CAN PROVIDE THEM. This negative experience with Capital One has been extremely disconcerting; and because of Capital One, I now find myself in more debt.

They raised our APR rate to an unheard of amount without telling us. Then we had another credit card pay them off, and we kept getting more bills with a finance charge on it. When we called, they said the charge was added before we closed the account. Well, we paid it; then came another one with a late charge. Now after the account is closed, we get a bill; a PLI maximum software co. charged us with a disk we received without asking or subscribing to at all. We haven't even heard of them. We can't get a hold of the software company. The Capital One people say it has a 30-day window, and it came in right before the 30 days.

I'm so sick of this company. We don't know what to do and how to get rid of them. They just opened our account back up so they could let the software co. charge us. Isn't that illigal? We have paid more than we owe, and it's hurt us emotionally. WE cant seem to get ahead on the other bills because of this. I dont want our credit score to look bad because of them. What to do?

Both my wife and I have been Capital One Bank credit card holders for many years and, until recently, found it to be a superior bank with which to deal. We appreciated their close scrutiny of card activity to catch fraud before it occurred. Recently, this all changed. When we tried to convert our Miles One points into cash, the promised checks never arrived and calls only elicited more promises to send such checks. Letters on this matter were never answered. My wife died in January with a fairly substantial credit balance on her account. Calls to Customer Service attempting to have the credit amount paid by check ended up either in Bangalore, India, or someplace in the Philippines.

On one occasion, I called mid-afternoon EST, got a bloke in India who kept repeating my question and telling me how sorry he was that I was having a problem, no doubt while madly flipping through the pages of a manual or scrolling down on his computer screen, only finally to ask me if he could put me on hold. Having invested nearly half an hour already, I said sure. Twenty minutes later, he came back and said he needed to put me on hold again, this time for nearly half an hour. Finally, he came back and told me that he was unable to transfer my call to the necessary Customer Service (and I use the term very, very loosely) person because it now was past 5:00 pm EST, and the office was closed. I nearly ruptured a blood vessel.

To date, 3-5-08, neither the check for the credit nor one for the Miles One account balances has been received. When, or perhaps I should say "if", this matter ever is cleared up, that's the end of Capital One for me. What happened to these people who once were so good? Did aliens take over the company? Perhaps the Gothic and Visigothic hordes they used in the commercials at one time ended up running the company.

On top of the stress resulting from the death of my wife, the aggravation of trying to get money that rightfully belongs to us has damaged my health.

Along with the check a note affirming my closed account and that were sending it back to me. I thought it was strange since the account had been closed for a year already. I was happy for the money that I thought they owed me and deposited the check. Then a couple weeks ago, I start getting letters telling me that Capital One has made an error by sending me the 500.00 dollars and due to this error they have re-opened my account and debited 500.00 to pay themselves back. I feel this is fraud. They are not aware of any of it when you call the customer service. They keep transferring you to all sorts of people who can't help you at all. I feel taken by the fact they opened my account that had been closed, without my authorization. I feel unheard and that it is impossible to get anyone to help you in person.

I have a $500.00 bill now that I can't afford to pay back all at once. I recently have been paying my own medical insurance. This Capital One issue has caused so much stress by trying to get a hold of someone in customer service who will help me. They are all so fake and basically lie to your face that they are going to help you when they just transfer you on. I don't know what to do. Capital One scammed me and made $500.00 off me. I called them and every time I get someone with a thick accent that I don't understand, that tells me they see how I pay my bill every month at the same time but unfortunately 2 payments were put on one month. On top of this, I was accidentally disconnected TWICE while stating my issue! Even though I have made payments and paid them off! The cards never seem to have a zero balance, even though they haven't been used in a year! I have also been charged for Credit Inform 6 times in one month, and could not get that issue resolved IF I actually spoke to a representative, after battling with their automated phone system, which has NO prompt to speak to a representative. The only way to speak to a representative is to select make a payment which they charge your credit card $10.00 to do so!

When I did speak to a representative, I was transferred, hung up on, or disconnected, thus had to restart the whole frustrating process over again. I have also not been able to access my accounts via their website, after logging in, I get a System Error message from their website and it tells me to call the automated phone service #! When I call the automated system to check my balance, it does not match the balance on my most recent statement by hundreds of dollars! Plus my payments are not posted to my account in a timely manner. I have finally canceled both of these cards and will never use Capital One again! Apparently, I have a credit of $103.29 on one of my cards, and they said they would issue a refund check in 90 days, we'll see if it even shows up.

It has ruined my credit score, because they reported late payments, and have always carried some sort of balance on the cards even though I paid it off each month, It has cost me more for fraudulent charges, like being charged 6 times in one month for Credit Inform, and that issue was never resolved. I heard nothing from them for months and decided to check my account online. It shows an overdue balance in the amount that I had reported as fraudulent. I have tried to call Capital One, and every time I speak to one person they transfer me to someone else. I usually get hung up on and then have to call back and go through the same process.

So far, I haven't been able to find out from anyone what happened. The local police said that Capital One fraud has not called them at all. I have decided to just pay the amount to save my credit before it goes to collection, but they have never sent me any statements; and my online account payment ability has been blocked because of the fraud, but I can still log in to see the amount owed. I don't know what to do. If I pay it then I would be taking responsibility for charges that someone else fraudulently made. This is the worst experience with a credit company I have ever had.

On 3/1/08 we received a letter from Capital One stating that our Balance Transfer had been credited to our account. I logged on to Capital One website and found a balance transfer of $5000.00 and finance charge of $100.00 for the transfer dated 2/26/08. My wife never discussed or requested anything about a balance transfer.

I tried to call them to straighten it out, but it is next to impossible to contact a human through their Customer Service number. Finally I got a hold of some guy from India or Pakistan, and he finally transferred me to the fraud department. The fraud department said there was nothing they can do because my wife approved the balance transfer. I not very politely explained to the fraud department that a balance transfer was never even discussed. Why would I want to borrow money from Capital One to invest in a Money Market Fund? We have savings that we were thinking of doing this with. Who would borrow money to invest in a MMF?

Anyway she gave me the number to the dispute department which I can't call until Monday. We have been Capital One Platinum card holders for many years and have always paid off our monthly balances in full. Any advice would be appreciated. This is what I plan to do: I will call them on Monday, I will pay off my balance in full (less $5100.00), and I will not ever use Capital One again. First I will tell you my wife and I had a bankruptcy nearly 3 years ago. My wife and I have worked hard to clean up our reports (as best as possible), and we have paid every single bill on time during our post bankruptcy. Obviously, we pay a higher rate than most but, please read on.... Problem 1: During one of my visits to Capital One's website I noticed that if you pay via the phone (after they charge you $10), they post the payment with negative comments such as NSF, Late Fees, etc. The reason I had to pay via phone was, at the time I didn't have my car payment set up on internet, and I was receiving my payment coupon later and later every month which I believe is on purpose! I wrote and complained that I have NEVER been late or had an NSF, and the only reason I paid via phone was because I was literally getting my coupons 5 days before the due date. (Whatever happened to just getting the entire coupon book?) They wrote back saying this is a general fee category that they post those notes to and denied sending my coupons late. Well, I fixed their collective usury-- I refinanced the vehicle without saying a word.

Problem 2: I signed up for their credit inform service which I pay for. They tell you they team up with XYZ credit reporting agency, when in fact they are actually using whichever service reports the lowest FICO score. I believe this is so they can hold me to a higher APR. I only discovered this when I assisted my wife in signing up for the same service. Guess what? The reporting agency they used for her credit inform was completely different than mine! In both cases, the reporting agency was the lowest score and the hardest to work with in terms of disputes and corrections. We definitely have concerns about their practices now. Thank God I found this site and took time to read the ongoing complaints!

I have no idea how badly this is hurting me financially, but I can tell you this: It's costing me a whopping 17.99% - 18.4%. After reading so many of the really, really damning letters on this site, I plan to dump my credit card too - CAREFULLY, and one step at a time (so they don't reopen the thing). Well I told her it did not and complained how hard it was to reach a person. I explained about why I didn't feel the over the limit fee was proper because I did not exceed the limit by the end of the month. She said she would transfer me to another person who could help. They said they would take off the option to exceed the limit and the card would just be declined if the charge would place me over the limit.

First of all, they were unable to verify that I have no annual fee on my account. The mailer that I got from them had a second disclosure of credit terms very different from the one on the back of my letter. Essentially they had different disclosure forms in the same envelope. When I activated my card, I responded negatively to any requests to join a payment protection plan or insurance. Just to be sure, at the end of my call I asked her to confirm that I am NOT signed up for any of these services. In a few days, my purchases started showing up in my account, and I see they've signed me up for a Payment Protection Plan, the very one I refused.

I called them to have it taken off, and I concur with everyone else their customer service is deplorable. The representatives cannot speak English. As of 2/16/08, I received a letter in the mail from Capital One saying Thank You for your interest in our Payment Protection program. Unfortunately, we're unable to enroll you in this program at this time because your account is currently past due. The problem is I never opened an account with Capital One! I have been calling for the past 2 hours trying to find out how I have an account and how much has been charged. I already spoke to two different people, and only the second one said that cash advances have been made and the card is MAXED OUT! Then she has the nerve to transfer me, and I'm still on the phone 50 minutes later, not to mention someone answered, then hung up. (I could hear talking in the background right before they hung up.)

I am a college grad and already have three credit cards I'm paying off. I have been a victim of fraudulent charges in the past with another credit card company. That incident was handled within 20 minutes THAT DAY! I may have to go to the police with this one and bring up charges on Capital One, considering all the complaints listed here. This is ridiculous, and I'm too young to be having my credit all messed up already.

Just got a new Capital One card, with a $10,000 limit, last week. Used the card (3 times in total) to shop for groceries, play golf and buy postal stamps. Total of my charges were $75.14. My card was restricted/denied when I went to use it at the golf course; needless to say, I was embarrassed. Was on the phone on hold for more than 1 hour and 45 minutes to find out why Capital One did this. I finally hung up.

When I asked them where I was calling, I was advised it cannot be given out due to company policy; the same applied when I asked for their ID #. It was not the good old USA. I haven't even received my first statement yet. Closed my account today. This is not a no-hassle card, but a hassle card. As they ask in their ads, "What's in your Wallet?" I can tell them what went through my shredder, my Capital One card.

No consequences, I shut them out before they can shut me out.

My first contact with Capital One was 8-14-07 with Doug. I was charged the annual fee, even though I had canceled my membership with the company. I was assured by Doug that the fee would be removed and all charges would be removed and my account closed. The account was not closed, and I was being charged late charges. I then talked with Marie on 10-17-07. I was assured that there was a mistake, and my account would be closed, all charges removed, all late penalties removed. This did not happen. I am now receiving notices for past due amounts, charges and collections. I have been told by phone over and over that the account will be closed, and it is their mistake. On 1-31-08 I wrote them a certified letter stating that I want in writing that my account is closed and all charges removed. I just got the letter and they gave me the phone number to call.

I simply assume this round about will begin again. I am at a loss on how to make this stop. I hope you can help. I had a credit card with them and always paid on time. I simply wanted to cancel the card and close my account in good standing. On the phone they always tell it will be done. I definitely wish I had read up on all of the complaints on Capital One before opening a credit card account with them. I opened a small business credit card a little over a year ago. Through charging materials for jobs I went over the credit limit a bunch of times, but still made my payments on time every month, always paying more than the minimum. They slammed me with a $39 fee every month for that. I figured, oh well, cost of doing business. I called to see if my credit line could be increased, but because I had gone over they said NO!

I continue using the card and all of a sudden my card is denied as I am trying to purchase materials. I quickly call Capital One, knowing that I should have about $5000 worth of unused credit. They inform me that they have decreased my credit line from $7000 to $2500, WITHOUT EVEN INFORMING ME! I was FURIOUS!!

The Fraud Dept said it had NOT been put into the system but they would do it then. I asked three times before I hung up if everything was ok and I would be able to charge out of the country. They assured me everything was ok.

I have three gripes with Capital One. First, my Capital One credit card interest rate was raised last year for no good reason. It had been 4.99% for years, until May 2007, when they increased the rate 100%, to 9.98%. I've never had a late payment with ANY creditor, I always pay anywhere from 5-20x the minimum payment on my Capital One card, and my credit score has always been excellent. 772 last time I checked. When I inquired as to why this occurred, I was told it was a business decision. Fine. Just like they made a business decision to hurt a good customer, I'm going to make a business decision to cancel this card, and only use my U.S. Bank credit card, starting March 1. With this interest rate action, Capital One essentially told me they don't want me as a customer anymore, and I am happy to oblige.

Second, Capital Ones computer systems are messed up, big time. About every three months or so, I get an automated email from them saying something to the effect of, We emailed your latest billing statement, and it was returned to us as undeliverable. Please log into your Capital One account and update your information. Problem is, I have always received these electronic statements that have allegedly been returned, so I have no idea what they're talking about. In addition, I recently received a snail-mail copy of my Dec-Jan billing statement, with a cover letter stating that it was sent because I had requested it. Uh, no I didn't. When I called to inquire why this was sent, the rep (who I could barely understand due to her thick Indian accent) had no idea, and confirmed that there was no record of anyone requesting a billing statement on my account. Quite frankly, its kind of scary knowing that Capital One apparently has such little control over its automated computer systems.

And third, would it kill Capital One to hire reps that can CLEARLY speak and understand English? As referenced above, when I called about the mysterious billing statement, the rep barely understood what I was saying, and vice-versa. When will Capital One (and others) learn that off-shoring customer service is, in the long-term, a liability? Essentially, as both a consumer and holder of a MBA, I feel qualified to conclude that Capital One is a poorly-run company. Poor strategy, poor technology, poor customer service. I fully expect that government regulators and lawyers will be all over them in the coming years. And I'd bet a dollar they already see that writing on the wall, too. Then again, given how inept they appear as a company, maybe they don't have a clue.

I have called twice to have it removed and I am told it will take about 48 hours to do so. My concern is that this is going on my Credit Report. Why would any company send such a huge amount without authorization?? I think that there is something very wrong with this company or they are hoping that someone will cash the check and then have to pay the interest rate. The check came without a letter, or something to sign. Very bad business.

This year, while often having a monthly balance of $9000, we would pay it in full that month. The payments are due the 21st. We found continuing difficulty trying to pay online, so we send the payment by mail.

In the last 12 months, they say we have been late twice. We know that one of the payments was sent on the 14th, and they say it was late by two days, another three days. They have now bumped the rate to 27.3%, even though we paid the amounts in full. One time in the last year, we did not pay the full amount, as we did not pay $4.63 out of $268. They charged us a finance charge on the $4.63, even thought there was no previous balance.

Yesterday, I tried to use my bank card at the grocery store and was declined. I put my check in the bank Thursday (the only check for two weeks), so I knew I had the money. I called my bank when I got home to discover that Capital One put a Restraining Lien on it. I called the attorney's office; they will release the lien if I tell my bank they can every cent I have left. I just mailed out checks for my utilities and mortgage. I offered what I have left less $100 to get a bit of food and gas to get to work, but they refuse. I am just so upset. I have not heard from Capital One in 2 years! They even gave me loan in May, 2007. (That's paid off.)

I explained that I never heard from them. When they verified my address, it was wrong. But they said the mail never came back so in their eyes I received it. I had to get money out of my kid's banks to buy noodles for dinner. I would have paid the debt if I wasn't double crossed. Claim as income, then pay it anyway! What kind of deal is that?

I am trying to see my balance online, so that I can make a final payment to completely pay off the account. (The card itself has been cut up and trashed for about 5 mos.) I have not used it at all; the last payment made was an electronic transfer of 1/18/08. My bank has already declared it was electronically applied to my account number at Cap One, yet it has not cleared my bank account. Certainly by now--Jan. 27th, 2008--it should have cleared my checking account within 3 days of being sent.

By not applying payments when received, Capital One fraudulently charges excessive over-limit and past-due fees, which are 2 to 3 times a minimum payment. They also raise interest rates without your authorization or knowledge. In the small print on your credit card, they allow themselves to raise your interest rate with ANY past due accounts. Usually on the same date the account goes past due, and the late fee applied, your payment posts to the account. I don't want to do business with crooks like Capital One.

They never sent me anything to the contrary and by the time it was all settled, they not only charged me excessive late fees, they reported my credit as 60 days late. All this over a payment minimum of $15 with a balance of less than $100.

Then 4 months ago Capital One increased my credit line from $300 to $1700. I was very responsible to pay the balances down during this time. I went on line to make my payment today and my account comes as OVER THE LIMIT. There is a balance of $509+. I made a payment of $500 to the account so I wondered why the account was over the limit.

I finally got through to someone after 45 minutes, and was told that they lowered my limit to $500, with no notice to me.

I will say right off the bat that I fell on hard times so my I knew my credit would be shot. Capital One was the only credit card I had. They refused to work with me then sent my account to Eichenbaum and Stylianou, a collections agency. Starting off with a $900 credit card, it was inflated to well over $3,000 (plus court fees). Fine, I thought, at least I'm done with Capital One, I'll just pay this off and that will be it. I have been paying the $200 agreed amount a month without fail since March 2007. Now down to a thousand and change, I find out that Capital One has recalled the account and apparently want me to pay them the rest. I am to call them back Monday.

I've had heard so many horror stories of Capital One not wanting to cancel accounts, there is no way I can pay this if they start adding ridiculous finance charges. I think this is the point. I don't want this account and I don't want to deal with these people. If the gave this to collections, how are they allowed to change the rules toward the end? They don't even have the right amount of what I owe compared to what the collections agency has. I was told by a woman named Rose that she would contact their liaison at said agency and confirm but I don't believe them and I don't trust them. At least the agency SEEMS to be on my side and have each and every payment logged. Do I have any rights at all?

This particular account started off as a secured credit card for $1,500. Over the course of years, with a great payment record, Capital One increased my credit limit to $2,300 without my consent. No biggie. Fast forward to years later, and I was late with a payment; on the last day of my account being forwarded to their collections dept, I paid the balance in full.

They accidentally shut my account off and apologize for the mistake and promise to issue a new card. They do not, will not, cannot or offer multiple explanations as to why I have not gotten my card--and make repeated assurances that everything is resolved and a new card will be sent out. Months later, no card, no call backs...no competence. I asked them to refund my original deposit and got a royal run around and hung up on. I have dealt with 25 operators in 4 different departments in 2 different countries, and still no card, no refund, no explanation--and I am done dealing with them.

I have no card, probably adverse credit reporting on their behalf, and no refund for my initial security deposit.

This bank over the past year has been consistent with intentionally misleading and incorrect financial data on credit card statements. They repeatedly assess interest charges when none are due, requiring me to call and endure long wait times with several transfers before I get to someone who fixes the mistake. Each time, they promise to correct the glitch in their system, but after several months, incorrectly assessed interest charges ensue.

I recently sent a lengthly letter explaining in detail the problems encountered in the past several months; their reply was a form letter explaining how interest charges are calculated. I believe this is a pattern that is more than likely repeated with thousands of customers, many who aren't aware they're being overcharged. Hours and hours of phone calls certainly take their toll on my emotional well being. Though I manage to recover all overcharges, the time required to accomplish this certainly adds up.

I wanted the money to pay off another loan at a higher interest of 15.99%. Their credit services would only approve this Capital One personal loan at 14.99%. I'm sorry, but for 1% difference, it just isn't worth it, to accept this loan. I went on-line at www.capitaloneloans.com to email this information to them, and of course they do not supply such a courtesy. I called and talked to a Crystal, and she told me to just rip up the check. How business-like of them to give their operators such instructions?

I wanted to know why I wasn't approved for the lower interest rate and wanted to please talk to someone who could tell me this information. Crystal told me, "We don't have any information as to the reason, and so there is no one you can speak with." I have another Capital One credit card which is ironically at an interest of 13.74%, lower than this "personal" loan. I am ripping this card up today, and it will be paid off in a few months. In Jan. '07 I paid a $35 fee to have a payment added to the end of my note due to financial difficulty. In March I was notified that I was 2 payments behind, and late fees accrued. I was told it was too late to add a payment to the end because I must be caught up. The phone calls started to come in every 20 minutes on auto dialer and would continue non-stop until I wrote the company a letter asking for all communications to be done by mail. After this request, I tried to get a hold of customer service to try to get caught up on my van payments. At several different times I was transferred to the finance dept. and reached a voice mail--never to have my calls returned. I logged on to online banking and set up auto payments for both my van and my car, with both approved. Then 30 days later I received notification in the mail that I can settle my accounts with 65%. I again attempted to call.

I continued making payments when I could, but the interest and late fees make it so I will never be caught up. I was told at the last call that I don't qualify for auto payments until I completely catch up my account. If I continue paying, I am getting nowhere because it is all applied to late fees and interest. The company won't even try to help me catch up.

I am a mother. The late fees and interest kill my budget, and no matter how much I make I can't catch up. I feel that I fell behind after they refused my payment and also refused to let me make auto payments. I feel as if they wanted me to be indebted to them more than what I should be. When I financed my car at the beginning of the increased gas prices, I asked for financing other than Capitol One because of their practices. I was told that it wouldn't be Capitol and signed papers for Onyx Corp.--only to later find out that they are a subsidiary to Capitol One. If I'd known that I might not have financed that car at all. I've had a business account with Capital One for several years and have always either paid the entire balance, or made 4-5 times the minimum payment. Without warning, my card was rejected. When I called to inquire, I was told that the computer put a hold on my account, and that it was for my protection against fraud. I was also told that I should have received notification by phone, email, or letter. They do not have my email address, and no one called. If the notification was by letter, the hold on my card would have already been in effect without my knowing. To date, I've not received any notification by any of those methods. When I asked to have my account checked, there was no different activity on the cards, just the same vendors that I ordinarily used. Even after talking to a supervisor, I have not received an explanation that makes sense as to why my card was locked. The only answer was that the computer did it for my protection.

How would they feel if they were standing in front of a merchant and their card was rejected for no reason? A few years ago I canceled my personal card with Capital One because one customer service rep told me I could use a check from them to pay for a purchase. I did, and the check was returned. When I called, another employee and supervisor told me something totally different. When I asked why, they told me sometimes the company would allow the checks, and sometimes not. I asked what was the criteria, and they could not give me an answer. Again, my personal account was always paid timely and above the minimum. Since their decision-making (re: their account holders) was so capricious, I paid off the balance and canceled the card. The majority of their customer service reps are either difficult to understand, or just plain rude.

Then, I got another surprise: my next monthly payment due on 2/11/08 is 305.39. I immediately contacted Capital One and was told that there was an error with their system, and that I was not supposed to be increased to $2000.00 but instead to $1600.00--leaving me responsible for whatever amount went over the $1600.00 to be paid on my next bill.

I can understand the problem with the system, but they should not be billing me $305.39 to be paid in one month. They should have billed me according to the $2000.00 limit considering it was their system that failed. Also, they should consider that my last month's statement still had my credit limit at $2000.00. They never even sent me a letter informing me of this problem. This is completely unjustifiable. Now I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to come up with the money for this payment. I have no dings on my credit and try hard to keep it clean. It frustrates me to think Capital One can do this. I was outraged upon hearing this. I have had numerous different credit cards for the past 20 years and until this time have always routinely had replacement cards sent to me without my requesting them.
