Our editor’s take

Warranty Solutions is a potentially good option if you’re looking for a variety of coverage levels with varying term lengths. You can only purchase coverage through a dealership, and you should check contract exclusions to see what’s not covered. Warranty Solutions doesn’t offer as many plans as other companies, so you may want to explore other options to get the best plan for your needs. You can cancel your plan and get a refund if applicable.

About Warranty Solutions

For over 40 years, Warranty Solutions has administered vehicle service contracts and other automotive products, including tire and wheel protection, dent repair and theft protection. The company doesn’t sell its products directly to consumers, so you need to contact a participating dealership if you want to purchase a vehicle service contract or other type of protection. Warranty Solutions fully insures its contracts through Heritage Indemnity Company.

Warranty Solutions availability

You can only purchase a Warranty Solutions vehicle service contract through a dealership. The company offers plans for both new and used vehicles. However, your car may need to be under a manufacturer’s warranty to be eligible for extended coverage. Additionally, dealers may only offer an extended warranty when you purchase your vehicle. Contact a dealer to learn whether you can buy a Warranty Solutions contract for your car.

Warranty Solutions coverage and plans

Warranty Solutions has vehicle service contracts for new and pre-owned vehicles. The 3 Star plan provides powertrain coverage for used cars, while the 4 Star contract covers major components for new and used vehicles. These plans each offer extended coverage options for additional parts, known as 3 Star Plus and 4 Star Plus.

The 5 Star plan is the company’s exclusionary coverage option. It includes coverage for most vehicle components. If you have a car currently under a manufacturer’s warranty, you can also purchase the 5 Star Wrap contract. This plan supplements the factory warranty to provide full coverage.

Other warranty options include Mileage Select, a plan for older, high-mileage vehicles, and the Star Cool or Star Fuel plans. These two plans offer powertrain coverage plus additional components, including the cooling or fuel system.

Most plans are customizable, with optional coverages available. This table shows the differences between the 3 Star, 4 Star and 5 Star plans, since they represent coverage that should satisfy most drivers looking for extended warranties. The 3 Star Plus or 4 Star Plus may cover some components in the lower two plans. We’ve also noted where these plans offer optional coverages you can add to a policy.

Warranty Solutions coverage limits

Extended warranty companies usually limit payouts based on a vehicle’s value through the National Automobile Dealers Association. Warranty Solutions doesn’t specify its coverage limits online. Ask your dealer about payout limits when you purchase a contract.

Warning to Buyers – Do Not Trust This Warranty. I purchased a 2020 F-150 with over 130,000 miles and opted to include a powertrain warranty, which the dealership assured me would cover any issues from the engine to the rear end. They were very clear that this plan would protect me from any powertrain-related problems. Fast forward just four months and roughly 2,000 miles later—the truck began making a tapping noise. I checked the oil and found it was 4 quarts low. I immediately topped it off and brought it to a trusted shop. They discovered metal shavings in the oil, indicating internal engine damage.

I filed a claim with Warranty Solutions. It took them over a month to send out an inspector. When they finally did, the inspector dismissed the issue as "oil consumption" rather than a mechanical failure. The warranty company then required a 1,000-mile oil consumption test. After that test, they still refused to accept the shop’s professional opinion that the engine had internal damage and bad lifters, and instead pushed for a teardown to find the source of the oil leak. The original shop didn’t have the space or time to handle that level of work while negotiating with the warranty company. They also warned me that I might be stuck with a huge bill and no resolution.

At that point, I contacted the dealership where I purchased the truck. They advised me to take it to a Ford dealership. I followed that advice, and the Ford techs did everything the warranty company asked, including a full teardown. They found a heavy amount of carbon buildup due to oil leakage and recommended replacing the engine. Even with this clear evidence, the warranty company is still refusing coverage, claiming there is no definitive proof of where the oil leak originated.

This has become an endless loop of delays and shifting excuses. Meanwhile, I’m left with a disassembled truck, mounting shop bills, and a $600 monthly payment for a vehicle I can't even drive. Bottom line: do NOT purchase this warranty if you expect it to actually cover any real powertrain issues. I bought the warranty in good faith, but it has failed to deliver on every promise. Save yourself the stress, time, and financial loss.

I dropped my truck off at the dealership 4 weeks ago. I paid that dealer $4,200 for the extended warranty on this used truck. I recently exhibited some unsafe behaviors though I've maintained it rigorously. One of the problems the dealer identified was a large amount of metal shavings in the transmission fluid. They contacted WS, who demanded they disassemble the transmission (7 hours labor) and to have it inspected by a WS employee. That was done on the first Monday after I left the truck at the dealer. They did not send an inspector until Wednesday. They waited until that Friday to tell the dealer that they wanted a dealer estimate for rebuilding, rather than replacing the transmission. The dealer told me it's much cheaper to replace than rebuild. They provided an estimate to WS that Friday, and have been stalling for a full two weeks since. I've called WS directly and confirmed that they unabashedly have done these things.

This past week, the service manager at the dealer began calling WS, as he's had a service bay occupied by a disemboweled Silverado for three weeks with no action on WS' part. They daily promise a decision, yet never provide it. They said they had a 'glitch week before last, and that caused the delay to that point, but no excuse for this week's delays. I'm almost $1000 into a rental car so I can still work, and WS tells me they won't pay for it due to the delays on their part - they only pay for the labor time they calculate for the actual work done by the dealer.

DO NOT EVER BUY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM THIS COMPANY. It seems to me that their entire goal is to deny claims, to stall and delay in hopes that I'll pay the $13K the dealer quoted for the rebuild and go away. NOT HAPPENING. Warranty Solutions is either grossly incompetent, insolvent, or deliberately and actively defrauding dealers and consumers.

I had purchased a car through Second Chance Motors who has since gone out of business. My car loan was sold to another company, but at the time of purchase, because I had credit problems, this company said they would take care of all maintenance issues throughout the the duration of the loan. This was a major part of their sales pitch. I had brought the car back for repairs with no problems and was not charged. Now that they have sold the loan, every time something is wrong with the car, I end up having to pay. I did in August pay almost $600 for a crank sensor that went out. Now the timing belt which I was told when the crank sensor went out was not covered because it was electrical, engine parts were covered not electrical.

Now that this is an engine part, Warranty Solutions are telling me this part had to be changed by 60,000 miles, so now it's not covered either. My car has an estimated 76,000 miles on it and I was told it was purchased with 53,000 miles. When I purchased the car, I was told that the belts and hoses were all changed. At this point, I have no way of proving that, nor did I expect to have to because my understanding was all maintenance issues would be covered. So every time something goes wrong with the car there is some technicality on why Warranty Solutions will not pay to have the car fixed. I happen to be one of the millions of people who have not worked in quite a while and frankly can't afford this. Again, I was told when purchasing the car, this was a way for me to not have to try to pay a car note and struggle with maintenance issues. Now, what I agreed to is not what I'm getting.
