Our editor’s take

MPP could be a good option if you’re purchasing a new or used vehicle at a participating dealership. However, the company’s plans are only sold in 10 states, and many ConsumerAffairs reviewers seem dissatisfied with their MPP plan, citing undisclosed deductibles and misleading coverage.

How MPP works

Mechanical Protection Plan is an extended auto warranty company founded in 1979. MPP works by protecting your vehicle from certain repairs once your factory warranty expires. The company offers extended warranties, gap protection and coverage for recreational vehicles, commercial vehicles and more.

MPP availability

MPP only offers its plans through select dealers in 10 states:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Mexico
  • Texas

MPP coverage and plans

MPP has various plans available for both new and used vehicles.

  • MPP Platinum Care Elite Plus EV Coverage: Covers the items in the MPP Platinum Care Plus EV and MPP Platinum Elite Plus EV plans
  • MPP Luxury Plus: Covers parts from previous plans and adds extra benefits such as tire and road hazard protection, paintless dent repair and brake pad coverage

  • Bronze Warranty: Covers your engine, transmission/transaxle and front- and rear-wheel drive components
  • Silver Warranty: Includes the parts covered under the Bronze plan along with your steering, brake system, electrical system, factory-installed air conditioner and front suspension

MPP cost

MPP doesn’t publish prices for its plans, so the only way to get a quote is to consult with an MPP dealer. Prices generally vary based on the car you own, how long it’s been in service, the car’s mileage and the plan you select. All of its plans feature a deductible that you choose when signing up.

MPP customers also have several payment options. You can add the service contract to your vehicle purchase financing, pay for it in full or finance it separately with 0% interest. If you finance it separately, there’s a required minimum down payment, and you can pay the balance over 12 or 18 months.

MPP benefits

MPP offers two secondary benefits in addition to repair coverage for its warranties.

MPP policies

Inspections may be required for some vehicles and plans, though MPP generally provides coverage for vehicles of up to eight model years old and up to 90,000 miles.

For repairs, you can bring your car to your dealership, any authorized dealership or any repair facility with Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification. The repair facility will need to call for prior authorization and MPP will pay the repair facility directly for covered repairs.

FAQ

Is MPP legit?

Mechanical Protection Plan appears to be a legitimate company. It's been in business since 1979 and all of its policies are insured by Old United Casualty Company. However, many ConsumerAffairs reviews reported being unhappy with their MPP plan, with some reviewers reporting that they experienced undisclosed deductibles or misleading coverage.

How do I file a claim with MPP?

To file a claim with MPP, you generally need to call the toll-free number listed on its website or contact a customer service representative. However, customers who need to file a claim for gap coverage can download a form online, fill it out and send it to the provided email address.

Can you cancel an MPP warranty?

You can cancel any MPP plan at any time, but you must call its customer service line to do so. If you cancel within 30 days of signing up for a plan and have not filed a claim, you’re eligible for a full refund. Cancellations requested after the 30-day waiting period will receive a prorated refund that may vary between states.

Can you transfer an MPP warranty?

All of MPP’s plans are transferable, meaning you can shift your plan to your vehicle’s new owner if you sell your car before the plan expires.

The MPP extended warranty was purchased from Honda dealer in Phoenix, Arizona. Paid cash upfront, vehicle was sold less than six months later. MPP is giving the runaround on the refund and corporate customer service agents lie and offer no resolution other than the check is in the mail. It’s been 2 months and still waiting. They say they have to follow protocol and will not reissue the check till we wait another 30 days. No resolution and could not offer any other options other than just wait.

Save your money. I am having an EVAP repair done and there is a deductible which was not disclosed. I have an OutOfPocket cost of over $200. They are paying $400 +, so about a little over 50%of the cost. This is not what I paid for. MPP is not cheap & undisclosed about payments from them is deceitful at the very least.

This warranty policy is misleading and feels like a scam. The policy was sold to me as a comprehensive bumper-to-bumper warranty, but when it came time to use it, the coverage was far from what was promised. Many parts that were supposed to be covered are excluded, and for those that are covered, the warranty does not pay the full cost.

For example, I recently took my truck in for wheel bearing repairs. The wheel bearings cost nearly $700 each, but the warranty only covered $400 each. On top of that, the warranty’s approved labor rate is significantly lower than the dealership’s standard rate, leaving me responsible for roughly 45% of the total cost—despite having a so-called “full coverage” policy. Please be cautious when considering this type of warranty. It sounds great when they’re selling it to you, but when you actually need to use it, the coverage falls far short of expectations.

We purchased this plan in 2018 and were never told it was a by date of expiration and even then paperwork supports mileage and not terms and when we tried to use it we were told it expired when the vehicle was paid off. Waste of money and as the consumer we're not informed of these restrictions and would have never purchased it because Arizona has a lemon law and also the manufacturer warranty would have covered it as long as this plan was in affect. We purchased it as an extended warranty option not as long as manufacturer will also cover it.

MPP Gap insurance is a rip off, I was in a not at fault accident, My insurance company done a vehicle value report and issued a check to the Lien holder. MPP valued my vehicle as less and refused to pay the full remaining balance of $6000.00. They issued a check for $3000.00 and I still have to pay $3000.00 to the Lien holder. The whole reason I purchased gap insurance was for situations like this. My insurance adjuster said she has never seen or heard of a GAP insurance company doing this. If you use MPP you are getting ripped off.

MPP Gap protection company is a joke. Do not get gap with them because they will not pay what you owe and when the insurance company finds out they underpaid a year later the gap insurance took that money too which should have gone to the person who paid off the car or the lien holder at best. Avoid at all cost because it will cost you by using them. I have filed a claim with the BBB.
