Our editor’s take
MPP could be a worthwhile option if you’re purchasing a new or used vehicle at a participating dealership. However, the company doesn’t provide the information we’d want to see before we pass judgment, and we don’t have enough consumer reviews to draw an opinion from at the time of publishing.
About MPP
Mechanical Protection Plan is an extended auto warranty company founded in 1979. The company offers extended warranties (also known as vehicle service contracts), GAP protection, tire/road coverage, and coverage for recreational vehicles, commercial vehicles and more.

MPP availability
MPP only offers its plans through select dealers in states, including:
- Arizona
- California
- Florida
- Georgia
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- New Mexico
- Texas
It has plans available for both new and used vehicles, depending on the level of coverage you want/need.
MPP does not list plan limits for vehicle age or mileage, so make sure you ask a representative to see if your vehicle qualifies.
MPP coverage and plans
New vehicles are eligible for MPP’s Platinum Coverage plan, which covers nearly every mechanical and technical component except those specifically listed as “not covered” in your contract. You can also opt to add one of the following maintenance/hazard plans to this coverage:
- MPP Care Coverage covers chassis lubrication, engine oil, filters and tire rotations.
- MPP Elite Coverage covers your battery, brake pads, fuses, interior and exterior light bulbs, engine belts and hoses, headlamps, windshield wiper blades, and tire alignment.
- MPP Care Elite Coverage covers the items in the Care and Elite coverage plans.
- MPP Luxury Plus covers parts from previous plans and adds extra benefits such as tire/road hazard protection, paintless dent repair and brake pad coverage.
Used vehicles have more flexibility, with five plans to choose from. Here’s a breakdown of the five used vehicle plans and what they cover:
- The Bronze Warranty covers your engine, transmission/transaxle, and front- or rear-wheel drive components.
- The Silver Warranty includes the parts covered under the Bronze warranty along with your steering, brake system, electrical system, factory-installed air conditioner and front suspension.
- The Gold Warranty covers all of the parts in the Bronze and Silver packages with enhancements in certain areas.
- Platinum Vehicle Coverage covers select mechanical and technical components.
- Certified Pre-Owned Platinum Wrap covers mechanical and technical components as well as your suspension alignment, wheel balancing, filters and more.

MPP cost
MPP doesn’t publish prices for its plans, so the only way to collect a quote is to consult with an MPP dealer. (Consumer prices might actually be set by the dealership you’re buying from, so it’s difficult to make judgments about MPP’s pricing overall.)
MPP claims prices vary based on:
- The car you own
- How long it’s been in service
- Its mileage
- The plan you select
All plans feature a deductible that you get to choose when signing up. (You also have access to a disappearing deductible benefit when covered repairs are performed by the selling dealer.)
MPP customers have several payment options. You can add the service contract to your vehicle purchase financing, pay for it in full or finance it separately with 0% interest. If you finance it separately, there’s a required minimum down payment, and you can pay the balance over 12 or 18 months.
MPP benefits
MPP offers two secondary benefits in addition to repair coverage.
Benefit | Limit |
---|---|
Roadside assistance | Towing allowance of up to $100 per occurrence/reimbursement of up to $100 for on-site road service |
Rental car reimbursements | Reimbursement of up to $35 per day |
Trip interruption benefits | N/A |
Other | N/A |
MPP policies
Inspections may be required for some vehicles and plans, including vehicles more than 8 years old or with over 90,000 miles on their odometers.
You can cancel any MPP plan at any time, but you must call its customer service line to do so. If you cancel within 30 days of signing up for a plan and have not filed a claim, you’re eligible for a full refund. Cancellations requested after the 30-day wait period will receive a prorated refund that may vary between states.
Finally, all of MPP’s plans are transferable, meaning you can shift your plan to your vehicle’s new owner if you sell your car before the plan expires.
MPP FAQ
How does MPP work?
MPP works by protecting your vehicle from certain repairs once your factory warranty expires. Its tiers of plans increase the amount of coverage and parts that are covered the higher you select, though some plans cap out at a specific repair amount. For example, its Elite plan covers the cost of one set of windshield wipers for the duration of your plan.
How do I file a claim with MPP?
To file a claim with MPP, you need to call the toll-free number listed on its website or contact a customer service representative — with one exception. Customers who need to file a claim for GAP coverage can download a form online, fill it out and send it to the provided email address.
Is MPP legit?
Mechanical Protection Plan (MPP) has been in business since 1979, but we don’t have enough consumer reviews at the time of publishing to say for sure whether it’s legitimate or not.
