    Ford Edge extended warranty basics

Every new Ford Edge comes with Ford’s manufacturer warranty, a car warranty that covers different parts and components for varying amounts of time and/or mileage. Below is a breakdown of the base warranty you get with a new Edge.

    • Bumper-to-bumper warranty: Three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first
    • Powertrain warranty: Five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first
    • Safety restraint system warranty: Five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first
    • Corrosion: Five years and unlimited mileage
    • Diesel engine: Five years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first
    • EV/hybrid battery: Eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first

Since Ford stopped manufacturing the Edge in 2024, even the newest model is coming up on the end of its bumper-to-bumper factory warranty. You can purchase an extended warranty as long as your Edge is under three years old and has fewer than 36,000 miles.

A Ford extended warranty can extend the manufacturer’s warranty exactly, or you can choose lower-tier options that are more affordable but cover fewer parts.

Alternatively, you may opt to purchase an extended warranty through a third party. Third-party extended warranty plans are usually more affordable than “official” plans offered directly through dealerships, but they may have less coverage and different eligibility requirements.

Ford Protect plans for Ford Edge

Ford offers four extended warranty options that add coverage beyond your Edge’s factory warranty. These plans are tiered and priced based on coverage.

    • PowertrainCARE: This is the most affordable warranty plan, but it offers the least amount of protection. It’s a basic powertrain warranty that covers 29 components, including the engine, transmission and drivetrain.
    • BaseCARE: This plan covers 84 components, including everything in the PowertrainCARE tier, plus steering, brakes and front suspension, as well as air conditioning, heating and electrical components.
    • ExtraCARE: This plan covers 113 components. It includes everything covered by the PowertrainCARE and BaseCARE plans, plus electronics, such as the keyless entry system, instrument cluster, power seat and window motors, and speed control.
    • PremiumCARE: This is the most expensive coverage, but it’s a bumper-to-bumper warranty that covers more than 1,000 components, including everything in the other tiers, most other high-tech electronics, rear suspension, audio equipment, safety equipment and more.

Available term lengths and mileage limits vary among plans. Refer to the table below to see what kind of coverage you can get at each tier.

While plans aren’t customizable, you can choose a $0, $50, $100 or $200 deductible. A $100 deductible is standard. The lower your deductible, the higher your extended warranty price will be.

Ford Edge extended warranty cost factors

On average, a bumper-to-bumper extended warranty for a Ford Edge costs between $700 and $1,400 for each year the manufacturer’s warranty isn’t in effect. For example, for an eight-year PremiumCARE warranty, you’ll pay $700 to $1,400 per year for the five years beyond the three-year manufacturer’s warranty. Coverage in the lower tiers is less expensive.

In addition to the tier you choose, the following factors can play a role in the cost of a Ford extended warranty:

    • Model year: Extended warranties tend to cost more for older vehicles because the risk of issues increases with age.
    • Current mileage: Ford restricts coverage based on mileage, but even if your vehicle qualifies, you may pay more if you’re closer to the mileage maximum.
    • Expected mileage per year: The best coverage for you may depend on how often you use your car; tiers with higher limits can increase your costs.
    • Term length: Longer-term warranties cost more overall, but they usually reduce your annual costs.
    • Deductible: Lower deductibles mean higher annual coverage costs but fewer out-of-pocket costs in case of covered repairs.
    • Specific use cases: Ford asks if your Edge has had or will ever have a snowplow, and if it has or will be used for commercial purposes. These may affect coverage and costs.

The payment method you use to purchase your plan can also impact pricing. Paying in cash leads to the lowest overall cost, but Ford offers 0% APR financing on its extended warranties for up to 30 months. After that, interest increases your cost.

    Ford Protect benefits and exclusions

Determining whether a Ford Protect extended warranty is worth it for your Edge comes down to assessing more than just cost and coverage. Warranties provide peace of mind and additional perks beyond basic coverage, but they can also fall short in some cases. Think about added benefits and contract exclusions before deciding.

Additional benefits included in a Ford Protect warranty

A Ford extended warranty can be worth the investment for the base coverage alone, but all plans also come with some added benefits that make them more valuable. Regardless of the tier or term you choose, you’ll get access to the following:

    • 100% transferable service if you sell your Edge
    • All repairs/replacements use genuine Ford parts and rely on Ford-certified technicians
    • A $60-per-day rental car allowance for up to 10 days while you wait for a covered repair
    • 24-hour roadside assistance, including tire changes, lockout service and battery jumpstarts
    • Towing assistance, up to $100 per occurrence
    • Emergency travel expense up to $1,000 per occurrence within five days
    • Destination assistance up to $75

What a Ford extended warranty doesn’t include

All extended auto warranties have exclusions that you should be aware of before purchasing, and Ford Protect coverage is no exception. In addition to the components that each coverage tier excludes, some additional exclusions are listed below:

    • Damage caused by accidents
    • Damage caused by theft, vandalism, fire or explosions
    • Damage caused by improper fluid use
    • Issues caused by misuse
    • Issues related to racing or commercial use
    • Damage caused by alterations or modifications
    • Damage caused by inclement weather, natural disasters or the environment
    • Tire wear
    • Routine vehicle maintenance
    • Hands-free audio and communication systems
    • Consumables, including tires and spark plugs

For a complete list of exclusions, you can read the Ford warranty contract.

      FAQ

Can you buy a Ford extended warranty after purchase?

Yes, you can buy a Ford extended warranty after purchasing your vehicle, but you must buy coverage within three years and before your vehicle hits 36,000 miles. After that, Ford no longer offers its extended warranty coverage, and you’ll need to explore third-party warranty options.

Does Ford offer a 100,000-mile warranty?

Ford’s manufacturer warranty includes coverage up to 100,000 miles for diesel engines, hybrid/EV batteries and perforations due to corrosion, but you can get added coverage for up to 175,000 miles for other components.

Ford Protect plans range from just a powertrain warranty to a comprehensive, bumper-to-bumper warranty that covers over 1,000 parts and components. These are all available for up to 175,000 miles, but they come with an added cost.

Is Ford’s extended warranty worth it?

There’s never a guarantee that an extended car warranty will be worth the investment, and that’s as true for Ford’s warranty as it is for coverage from any other manufacturer. Ford’s extended warranty coverage costs around the average in the industry, though, so the likelihood is that your protection plan will be as worthwhile as those from most other manufacturers.

Actual value depends on your vehicle, your coverage options and whether anything goes wrong with any covered components during the warranty period.

How long can you extend a Ford warranty?

Ford offers extended warranties that go up to 10 years from the start date, which means you can get a maximum of seven years of coverage on top of the three-year manufacturer’s warranty. Longer warranty periods will cost you more overall, but you get added protection for less money per year when you opt into a longer term.
