You stranded you're just going to be stranded. Find someone else besides AAA. They don’t even have curiosity to call.

On July 6, 2026, I was driving my wife and four grandchildren through the Texas panhandle. We had visited Capulin Volcano near Raton, New Mexico, and were continuing our trip, scheduled to stay at a motel in Dumas, Texas. A little before 3 PM, as I approached a traffic light in Stratford, Texas, suddenly my oil pressure light flashed red and as I slowed, the car shut off. I was able to restart the car and slowly drove the vehicle into a PILOT service station at the intersection.

At 3:12 PM I called AAA, having been a member for over a decade, and put in my first request for a tow truck. I asked AAA if they could recommend a mechanic shop nearby where I could have the vehicle towed. They could not provide any information, but I did request that a tow truck be dispatched. While waiting for a response, the local Chevy dealership informed me that there was a repair shop literally one block from where my car was disabled. I then informed AAA that the tow would only be less than a quarter mile.

Within an hour of the initial conversation with AAA, the company assured me that a tow truck should be at my location within 90 minutes to two hours. At 8:29 PM, almost 5 ½ hours after my initial call, AAA, after twice updating the arrival time of the tow truck, informed me that it would be another 2 hours wait for the truck finally to arrive. This would mean that the tow truck MIGHT be at the scene by 10:30 PM. The key word is “MIGHT.”

Understand that I had been at a PILOT gas station with my wife, and four grandchildren (ages 7 to 11) since 3 PM with an automobile that was disabled. We were stranded in Stratford, Texas, and there was no bus, no taxi, no Uber or Lyft service, no rental car, nothing to get us to our destination in Dumas. I called a local motel, the Stratford Inn, and was able to book two adjoining rooms (almost $200).

It was too late to get a full refund from the motel in Dumas, so I called and told the managers of the Dumas Holiday Inn Express that I could not get to Dumas because it was impossible to get our group of six to the town some forty miles away. I asked if I could pay someone for a ride, but none of the Holiday Inn employees knew anyone who could perform that task. AAA then offered that I could make an appointment for the tow truck to meet me at 7 AM the following day, July 7, 2026. I woke up early and walked back to the PILOT station to meet the tow truck.

At 6:55 AM, as I stood waiting in the PILOT parking lot, I received a call from AAA to inform me that the tow truck had not been sent, and that AAA was “working on getting us a tow.” This is after PROMISING me that I had an appointment at 7 AM to meet the tow truck. It was now 7:39 AM and AAA was still working on getting me a tow. This is more than 12 hours since the initial phone call. Finally, after 8 AM, a tow truck arrived. The tow truck had been available the previous day, but AAA wasted time calling other tow truck companies. They initially tried using one of AAA’s contracted companies. When AAA was unable to contact the cheaper, contract company, the insurance and roadside assistance giant then spent the next seventeen hours trying to find the least expensive tow. All this time, the local tow truck operator could have been at the scene within ten minutes of the incident.

If you think this is a reasonable experience, then you should be happy that you still have AAA roadside assistance. I believe this is completely ridiculous and unacceptable. I will never recommend AAA again, in fact, I will actively try to dissuade people from using this company. I will pay ten times the annual fee to get a better roadside assistance company. I feel cheated, lied to, and, in essence, abandoned.

Five hours -- five HOURS -- to get a .9 mile tow from this inept "service". That's not even the worst, most incompetent part; had they told me it was going to be five hours from the start, I could have made decisions, but no, they initially told me 50 minutes. Then called to cheerfully say it would be another two hours (so three hours instead of 50 minutes while I'm sitting by the side of the road, in the sun, with my dogs). Then some tow driver called promising to be there in 35 minutes, never showed nor answered his phone again, so two hours later they dispatched a whole new driver, and while that eventual guy was great, I'd now wasted the entire afternoon of a workday on this utterly useless, indifferent and wildly incapable company.

I cancelled my "membership" that evening and after years of trusting them will never pay them another cent. Telling everyone I know and posting everywhere I can: forget about this terrible company and just call a reputable tow company directly. AAA might have been respectable 30 years ago, but what they are now is a hot dumpster fire with a "membership" plan (which means there's no pro-rated refund either). I wish every member of their executive team (or better still, their loved ones) the afternoon they gave me. Don't even consider paying these jerks. Pretty much anything is a better option.

I would take away the 1 star if I could. My husband recently died in his car in a parking lot. He was found days later. I was notified of his death and that his car had been towed. Of course, I did not want to drive his car after my husband had died in it so I call AAA to tow it for me. Well because he died and this was his car, we each had our own, they said that they would not let me use our AAA towing service. I have called for tows over the years for him and had his car towed no problems. Because I told them he had passed away they decided I could not use our AAA service. I could not believe that they could be so unkind and thoughtless at this time of need. I canceled my account with them and had to clean the car and drive it off the lot myself. I would not subject our children to having to deal with this. It was truly awful.

I complained to AAA about the charge and was told I was entitled to receive reimbursement. When I submitted the reimbursement form it was denied because I didn't have the original receipt. So I decided to call AAA and have them come out and put the battery in when customer service called me they asked me if I needed a jump, I said no. I need the battery replaced, but I have the battery. She stated, "We do not install third party batteries in cars." I proceeded to ask her how much a battery would be if I bought it from AAA and had them come out and she could not give me a price. Honestly I did not have a problem taking back the battery that I just bought, but I wanted to know how much AAA's battery was, I didn't want them coming out here and charging me an additional $300. I have my daughters in my AAA. They called to get a tow and were asked if they were in a safe place. They definitely said no they were not in a safe place. It took almost 3 hours for a tow truck to show up. What was the purpose of asking if they were safe. why didn't a different AAA driver come get them and take them to the closet restaurant, gas station or rest stop while they waited. They called AAA a couple times to check on times too. Very disappointed in AAA lately. Customer service is not a priority. Mostly want you to talk to an ai chat assistant. And if you talk to a live person they are slightly snarky undertoned and certainly not concerned with client safety. I canceled them after that. I won't do it. If you are allowed to leave a message, you might get a callback in a few days or you might not. When you eventually end up talking to someone after repeated calls, they sound helpful and seem to want to help you, but they always tell you that someone will get back to you. No one ever does. Emails never get replies so that doesn't help either. Should I mention that if you are using them for roadside assistance, their response time is also hours. AAA DMV services cause $154 over payment. As a qualifying individual with a designated Disabled Person/Veteran status, I am legally entitled to a complete weight fee exemption for my pickup truck under California Vehicle Code (CVC) Section 9410. My vehicle’s unladen weight is 5,246 lbs, which places it securely under the statutory 8,001-pound threshold managed in the CA DMV Weight Fee Exemptions Handbook.

During my renewal transaction at the Chico office, I explicitly pointed out this exemption to the clerk, cited CVC § 9410, and stated that the weight fees must be removed from the calculation. The clerk did not consult a supervisor, did not reference the standard DMV partner handbook or understand the rules, stated that the rulebook and DMV were making an error, and insisted on processing the automatically generated total. Because of this explicit training failure, AAA erroneously charged an extra $154.00 to my credit card.

While I am aware that a standard DMV refund can be requested using Form ADM 399, the state's processing backlog means my funds will be held hostage for three to six months. I did not make an error; AAA’s front-line staff did. It is entirely unacceptable to shift the financial burden of a AAA training failure onto a member—especially a member utilizing a legally verified disability exemption.

Because AAA acted as the processing agent that forced this over payment, I requested that AAA corporate issue a Manager's Adjustment Check or a direct financial reimbursement to me immediately. AAA can then assume the timeline burden of recovering those funds from the California DMV on its own corporate schedule. AAA has failed to follow up on this matter or even reply to my complaint. I filled out the survey and checked yes to the box to have a representative contact me.
