American Auto Shield plans

American Auto Shield offers eight plans. The Diamond plan is the most comprehensive plan. The Platinum and Deluxe plans both cover named components, but the Platinum plan has slightly more coverage. There are also optional, customizable coverage packages available.

American Auto Shield also has three options for more moderate coverage. The Aluminum plan offers a mid-level named component coverage, but the Bronze and Tech Plus plans are designed for specialty needs. The Bronze plan offers wrap coverage to complement an existing auto warranty. The Tech Plus plan exclusively covers electronics.

American Auto Shield then has two more basic plans: Powertrain and PT Gold. Powertrain is more affordable, but PT Gold offers more coverage.

PlanType of coverage
DiamondExclusionary
PlatinumNamed component
DeluxeNamed component

PT GoldExpanded powertrain

American Auto Shield also offers several levels of mechanical breakdown insurance, which is an insurance product that mimics the function of an extended auto warranty.

American Auto Shield coverage

American Auto Shield service contracts are available for cars up to 25 years old, which is much older than many companies are willing to cover. The company’s mileage limit is 250,000 miles, which is also comparatively high.

Customers can submit American Auto Shield claims online when their vehicles need repairs. American Auto Shield also offers 24/7 customer service by phone and online chat.

American Auto Shield offers towing coverage of up to $75 per occurrence. Many extended warranty companies offer complimentary towing, though. American Auto Shield’s rental reimbursements are about average at $40 a day for up to four days.

American Auto Shield FAQ

Can you get an American Auto Shield quote online?

American Auto Shield does not offer the option to get a quote online. However, calling directs you to customer service representatives who can help you get the right warranty plan.

How do you file claims with American Auto Shield warranty?

Customers or repair companies can call American Auto Shield to work on a claim. On the company’s website, there is a link to report a claim and upload supporting documents. Users can view claim history, status, milestones and payments when logged into their accounts online.

Are American Auto Shield warranties transferable?

Yes, you can transfer American Auto Shield warranties to a private party if you are trading in or selling your vehicle. Warranties can only be transferred from person to person and not to an auctioneer or dealership. This means you won’t necessarily waste money if you decide to sell before the end of your warranty. Also, transferring an extended warranty can increase the resale value of your vehicle.

Still have questions?

Is American Auto Shield legit?

American Auto Shield might be a good extended auto warranty provider for you if you have an older car with higher mileage. Its additional benefits leave something to be desired, but the company’s wide array of coverage options means many customers are able to find an extended warranty that works for them. Plus, American Auto Shield can cover motorcycles and ATVs.

Purchased a Titanium Plus full coverage extended warranty on 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Have had difficulty and extensive delays in getting claims covered. Their claims process is slow and evasive. Every effort is made to deny claims. Today after three weeks with the vehicle at the dealer service department, American Auto Shield denied the claim for a covered repair. Stay away from American Auto Shield. Service after the purchase is poor at best.

Writing this review from a repair facility. American Auto Shield is easily one of the most anti-consumer warranty companies I've ever had the displeasure of working with. There is no sense of urgency when it comes to facilitating repairs or communicating the status of ongoing claims. They have left customers without vehicles pending approval of claims for 60+ days. They promise to call back, they don't. They promise to resolve issues, they dont. I've been on hold over 40 minutes. There is no supervisor available. There is no flexibility in their ability to resolve a claim. This company is a scheme to siphon money from good paying customers. Avoid at all costs.

This company will gladly accept their monthly premiums from you. When you have a major claim that finally makes you glad you decided to get coverage, they look for a technicality to deny it. I have a Jeep Wrangler that I purchased as is. It had wider tires than stock, but that seemed to be it. They claim it is lifted and therefore an issue in the engine wasn't covered. I think the wheels make it slightly taller than stock. My mechanic informed me that even if it was lifted, it would have had no effect on problem with the motor. Big companies ripping off consumers that rely on them is unacceptable. I will not go quietly with their refusal to honor this claim.

BUYER BEWARE....Took car to the dealership to get diagnosed and to have service invoice wrote up and submitted. It was valve body sensor in transmission which is covered. So I told Subaru to do the work as it is my daily driver, only to find that this warranty uses this to their advantage as loop to get out of paying for the legitimate services that have been paid for up front in full. The car is a daily driver for work and I'm aware the factory dealership/service department is not a storage facility. It's been 8 days now and have been denied the claim because who has that kind time to lose without car.

If I knew this is how a local company looks out for the community around I would have never purchased this warranty... for the cost of warranty was same as repairs needed. Plus, had I known I was going to be the one paying out of pocket I could have had my car back 8 days ago. I will be going to dealership that sold this warranty as well as Better Business Bureau to raise awareness regarding this company's business tactics.

Motor vehicles have two horns so when you honk, there is a high and low sound emitted, One of mine stopped working so when I honk, it is high pitched and not a loud sound. The claim was denied because the horn "worked." Transmission began having difficulty shifting. Took it to dealership who determined it was failing. Adjustor denied claim because Ford had a "technical service bulletin" on the problem so that mechanics knew how to fix. There is a sneaky clause in my contract that American Auto Shield will NOT repair failures if there is a Technical Service Bulletin on the item. It is NOT a recall, just information to the repair shop how to fix. I regret not seeing that clause and, at the time I purchased the agreement, understanding the impact of a simple Technical Service Bulletin.

My truck is sitting at Commonwealth Volkswagen. I took my car there two weeks prior and was sent home because they had to get clearance from CarShield. I was told to take my car to VW on Saturday for an inspection which I did. Got a rental that was approved only to be called today 11/4/24 and told that I had to return the rental because the oil leak was a “preexisting condition” because of grime build up under the vehicle. Learning this after my car is in the shop, car isn’t fixed, and only to find out it’s gonna cost me $2200 to fix out of pocket. This is the most atrocious thing I’ve ever gone through. I will NEVER and I mean NEVER refer anybody to this company. Absolutely ridiculous and a complete ripoff.

Carshield has consistently missed deadlines. Caused repair delays, missed scheduled update calls. Reps are unable to provide updates or make decisions or transfer customers to supervisors. Supervisors do not follow up with customers, some reps even say that they are the president of the company. Carshield advertises "stress free repairs". At this point I just want the repair to be done. Also when attempting to submit a complaint on their website, when you click "submit" the link leads to a dead page.

American Auto Shield is horrible. They do not fix anything that goes wrong with your car. I've paid 4000 and some into this warranty and still have 1 more year to go before it expire. I needed a engine. The adjuster denied the claim what 2 parts in the engine. They claim it's not covered. I needed my AC fix. They also denied that too so what is the point of getting this warranty from American auto shield if they don't honor their contract? People spend their hard working money. It's not right how they can take your money but won't fix anything.

I don't understand how they still in business. I wish I never signed up with Carchex to get them. It's a nightmare. I talk to someone from there and he claims that he was going to try and help me out. I claim he was going to give me a call on Tuesday of July 9th. Never called me. I've called and talk to so many people and the only thing they say is, "Your claims was denied." I will be getting me a attorney to look into these people because this definitely not right.

My car has been in the shop since 3/18 it initially took a week to even get a response from American Auto Shield about my transmission repair and another week and a half for the inspector to come out and make a determination that it needed to be replaced. Another week to have a rebuilt transmission shipped in which was defective and then another week and a half to have the replacement sent which we were unsure was even going to arrive due to confusing emails. It has now almost been 2 months and I do not have my care still and due to the contract you only cover 2 weeks of rentals luckily the manufacturer covered a week of rentals but the rest has been on me. It has been expensive.

I am now dealing with discrepancy with the cost of the repair between the shop and the adjuster I need this resolved so I can get to work. I am more than willing to pay my part but I can not wait any longer as this has become an outrageous expense due to no fault of my own. I believe there should be a reasonable time frame for things to happen and this has passed that as I am sure you could agree. I AM Just looking to get this issue resolved so I can get to work. I am very busy and the hospital relies on me to be there when I am scheduled and it is getting to the point where I cannot afford to pay for a rental while waiting for adjusters to figure out what is going on when my car repair is complete. All the while I keep getting the we will call you back. Or a supervisor will call you. When every time I call them it takes hours on hold to reach anyone and when you do they can't help you in any meaningful way.

I paid $5,123 for an auto warranty last year and now when I filed a claim, they rejected it due saying that a small $50 surcharge was mistakenly not charged for a branded title on my car. My car has a clean title. This small surcharge has nothing to do with the repair claim. In fact, I paid a surcharge for 4wd cars which covered the transfer case that needs replacing at $8k. Carchex admitted their mistake but will not fix it and left me with a worthless policy. Both companies blame each other and neither will accept responsibility. I will be filing a lawsuit for deceptive trade practices as well as contacting the Attorney General in each of their states. Would anyone consider joining me? My email is **.

Worst Experience ever. Upon seeing several commercials, I decided to give them a try as my dealership warranty was about to end... Upon my initial contact with customer service - Everything that was said was perfectly vocalized... Faithfully did auto pay for over 2 years.... Then All hell broke loose... Had a major transmission issue that also affected the engine. I immediately call AAS. They gave me the name of the closes repair facility... Upon having my vehicle towed, to dealer, the Hell began. It took over a week for AAS to respond to dealership. I call AAS to see what the hold was. They assured me that my claim would be handled quickly and I qualify for Rental Reimbursement. Days would go by, and the dealership would call me asking me to contact AAS to put some fire to their butts because they were not getting any response.

After 3 weeks, the dealership said they would have to take my vehicle out of the shop because they needed the space because AAS was dragging their feet. Weekly I would have to call AAS for results (only to hear - "We sorry for the inconvenience, we will have a supervisor jump right on it.)" Finally after Almost 2 months (50 days) a REP from AAS contact the Dealership to approve my claim at 2/3 the cost. Leaving me with a Balance of $2800. Then I started getting calls from the Rental company for more money.

I called AAS to discuss the cost of the rental. I was Told that the Rental would only be eligible for Reimbursement from the day of approval and one extra day. For a total cost of $80. By this time, I already been drafted over $2500 in rental charges. Primarily because it took so long for my claim to get onto a supervisor desk... Even though the dealership was trying to reach someone every day and even myself weekly. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE and DECEPTION I've Ever Experienced.... Yet, in Some way I Blame Myself for NOT Doing my Due Diligence and Checking the Reviews FIRST.... IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE - With This COMPANY it's Probably a LIE‼️

I have the highest level of protection possible through American Auto Shield. I have auto paid my monthly bill, but all for nothing. I was out of state towing my camper to a motocross race with my F350. My turbo outlet pipe blew off the turbo on the highway leaving me stranded, at 10pm. I was able to limp off the highway to a Walmart parking lot with the assistance of the State Police. I contacted AAS who informed me the tow coverage would only cover $125 for my truck. I would have to stay the night in a hotel and leave my camper and race bikes in the parking lot of the Walmart, which was in the middle of the mountains! I refused and informed them I would temporarily fix the pipe and then replace it the next day. They told me to call them back for coverage for the replacement part. I was able to rig the pipe back up and get moving to the track, which was 5 hours away from home.

The closest dealer with the part was over 2 hours away. My truck wouldn't make a two hour drive. So I borrowed another vehicle, went to the Ford Dealership, purchased the parts out of pocket after being told I could submit for reimbursement. I then fixed the pipe on my own in the parking lot of the motocross track, good to go. Well they refused to reimburse me because it "wasn't diagnosed at an ASE certified shop". You mean the shop that I couldn't get to? They refused to cover it and I was out about $400. Strike one and I should have canceled then, but I didn't.

I then recently had a fuel delivery system failure, along with a turbo sensor that was failing. They refused to cover either part or repair because the turbo sensor "wasn't broken", however, it was malfunctioning and causing the turbo to not produce enough boost. The fuel system was diagnosed as an air pocket introduced through a leak on the fuel rail. That was fixed and repaired, not covered. Also my upper radiator hose was beginning to "crush" restricting coolant flow. They wouldn't cover that because it was a "rubber hose", which is listed in the exclusions. However, had the sensor been physically broken, they would cover that. If the hose was metal (it is wrapped in aluminum), they would cover it. If the $310 radiator hose repair wasn't completed and I kept driving the truck and it overheated and caused major engine damage, then that would be covered....what?!

After reviewing the fine print, this company has a built-in exclusion for them to not cover stuff for nearly every single situation. I should have done more research on the company before I purchased the coverage. I should have canceled after the first time they screwed me. Those are my fault! I did speak to "Diamond" who was extremely pleasant, but determined she is actually an employee of CarShield who sold me the coverage through AAS. Diamond acknowledged it didn't make sense and offered some ways for me to fight the decision, but it is a complete waste of time. Stay away from Car Shield and AAS! They will not cover your repairs. My repairs all in all totaled $1000. I can't imagine what they would try to pull if it was any sort of major repairs. I canceled coverage and learned a lesson.

What they don't tell you is once the part is removed it's at their discretion whether they will honor the claim and pay it.

If they decide not to you are stuck paying to put the vehicle back together. Also, their service hours are ridiculously low. I still ended up having to pay $700 out of pocket as they wouldn't pay the hours needed for the repair. They make it seem all great upfront. Why do you pay for service not only did I take it to a shop that was name by them but I had to foot a $400 to be diagnosed that the warranty co did not pay. Lousy lousy service.

This company will lie to you about what they will cover. They make the contract vague enough so they can get out of covering any repairs. They will leave you high and dry and not cover anything. They will rip you off for monthly premiums for years and still not help you out when you need it. This company is criminal!

From the very start it's been an uphill battle trying to get work done, along with trying to get a loaner car after 8 days of trying, still work is at a standstill on a job that should have taken 3 days max...and I didn't give it a 5 star rating, 2 at best.

This is the 3rd time I have to call on the status of my claim. 1st time was to report a claim, then was told to have repair shop call. Repair shop called and got NEW person who would need to check to find out if part was covered. NEVER heard back from Rep at Auto Shield. I called again, almost 2 weeks later to find out what was happening and was told repair shop needs to call to put in a claim. They need to get their ACT together. VERY POOR SERVICE. Think twice about this company.

I am requesting an Arbitration Hearing to Dispute the Devaluing of my Warranty on My 2015 Chevrolet Suburban that I Had Towed to Terry Cullen Chevrolet to have My Vehicle Scanned because the Check Engine Light came on the night Before(!). My warranty was Devalued Because Adjuster (known to me as Chris H) Informed Me that my Warranty was Devalued Because of carbon buildup in Cylinder #7 As per the Inspector's pictures/report which showed the Cylinder Valve Head (It’s) Intake/& Exhaust ports from Cylinder #7 on the head (itself). The pictures also showcased the intake manifold of cylinder #7 as well as a Random Additional Picture Of the Engine Block Piston Head from Cylinder # (3.). I spoke w/ Chris H & he said the problem came from the carbon buildup which prevented the Cylinder from functioning Correctly.

      - The Inspector Over-Looked /Never Remove For Inspection - (Because it was seized in its position) the valves lifter which actuates The rocker arm assembly to open & close the #7 valve. I humbly submit that the Inspector never checked The Active Mechanical Source as to WHY the Carbon buildup Occurred If the engine is running Which it was while Repositioning/Aligning the vehicle on the tow truck. It was running prior me noticing the check engine light. It was running after it came off of the tow truck. For diagnostics it was also running in order for it to be diagnosed by the scanner. If the engine is running combustion occurs as the spark plug ignites w/ Fuel. If the lifters are unable to actuate the rocker arm To open the valve to the cylinder head carbon will build up on the inside of the cylinder head.

Speaking with the shop's ASE Master Certified Technician(s) They along with the shop's Service manager They Unconditionally concur With my reasoning behind the carbon buildup which is the sole cause Of the Reason that Devalued my claim for Repair/ Replacement Recommendation of the engine. Chris declined the opportunity to send Alternate Inspector's Perspective Confirmation.

There are around 46 paragraphs in the EXCLUSIONS section. I needed a fuel pressure sensor switch replaced in the fuel system. I have Platinum coverage and in the coverage summary it indicates, "fuel Delivery System" is covered. Reading much further on page 9 of 16 it excludes emissions control devices required by the government. Read your contract thoroughly. Not doing so or not remembering specifics cost me $700+.

I've had an American Auto Shield car warranty since 2020. Up until now I had only used it once for a speed sensor. Recently at oil change I was told I had a coolant leak so I stopped driving the car until I could get it in to a dealership. It was diagnosed as a water pump issue and needed replaced. When the adjuster came to the dealership all he would authorize was the gasket! Why? Because the water pump for a 2010 Dodge Charger is over $300.00. I am supposed to be covered to 125,000 miles and the car currently has 109,000. Well below the mileage limit. Even the dealership was amazed as this is a common repair. The labor charge for a gasket vs. a water pump and the gasket is the same so I ended up paying to the water pump rather than risk a breakdown on the road. What a disappointment. If you need a car warranty look elsewhere. This company isn't worth the money or the hassle.

THE ABSOLUTE WORST! I've been without my car for over two (going on three weeks) due to the ineptitude of this insurance company. My mechanic has done EVERYTHING they requested, two diagnostics, a breakdown of my transmission, pictures of the pieces in question all for them to then say they have to send someone out to inspect the parts! FOR WHAT?! YOU ALREADY KNOW WHATS WRONG FROM THE TWO DIAGNOSTICS!!! They do nothing so you pay out a majority of the work so you can get your car back.

THERES NO COMMUNICATION TO POLICY HOLDERS! I had a SUPERVISOR tell me they can't call me back with information pertaining to my own vehicle! I have to call them for everything! They piece mail information to the mechanics and give you the run around. HORRIBLE customer service with the (exception of Margaret Ann). Now they don't want to reimburse me for the diagnostic they asked for in order to get my car fixed. Will be submitting a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

The representatives were awesome that I talked to,, The inspector that was sent to the dealership was BAD! Would not listen to the text and service man on what was really going on with the Cadillac and why it went out...for Car shield he was perfect, so they wouldn't have to pay for the repairs, not right.

Our family was on our way back from Florida, where our car died on the highway in Ocala Florida. We contacted CarShield and the two ladies on two different cell phones coordinated a tow and place called Don's Garage to take it to. The process was quick and the tow company came in 20 minutes. Don's Garage fixed our car the same day. I'm glad to be a Carshield customer. It's worth it to have the peace of mind knowing Carshield has your back in time of need. Thank you to everyone.
