I would never purchase any extended warranty again. I feel like I bought a warranty I would not get any benefits from. I was told there were repair options in my town but that wasn’t true. When I actually needed help no one local wanted to deal with Maxcare. Closest place was 3 1/2 hours away.

I bought a 2018 Dodge Journey 3 years ago, the payment is $100 extra a month for the max care. First time the car has given any problems, try to take it to Car max but they are booked for 3 months, so they send us to a manufacturer dealership. They diagnose the issue and inform us that the 2000 dollar catalytic converter repair is on us, I call Max Care and they say, "Sorry it’s on you." When I tell the dealership, "Give me my car," I owe them 200 dollars for not fixing the 2000 dollar issue. They’re trying to make money, they will weasel their way out of fixing anything, if the engine blows next week they’ll say it was because we neglected the engine by not fixing the catalytic converter but “it has nothing to do with the engine.” Stay away.

I have had the same issue twice now with my 2019 Honda Civic The starter. Roadside assistance for CarMax is terrible. I waited over 3 and a half hours and finally had to leave my car with my key hidden for pick up. Roadside assistance does not care and blows you off online chat and telephone with no real answers to your questions. Terrible customer service. And now I have to worry if my car is ok and when it will be towed at all.

I wouldn't purchase Maxcare if I had the chance to do it again. I had an air conditioner compressor go out in May of 2023. Here we are a little over a year later and it is out again. It was only warranted for a year so that leaves me out in cold. I called and they told me there was nothing they could do because the cover part is no longer under warrantee. Here is my problem, I am still paying for Maxcare and can't use it because I am now over the mileage and I am still paying for it because it was financed with my car. Now I am going to have to pay out of pocket to get it fixed.

I have had Max Care on three different vehicles and it is no longer a viable program. Per the service manager at the local store when CarMax offered the 90 day warranty on all purchased cars they did not increase the staffing of technicians in the shop. Therefore they are pushed out weeks for scheduled maintenance and MaxCare appointments. So they use service partners, local car repair shops, that they will authorize and reimburse to perform needed and covered repairs. But in doing so have no control over the system and are very misleading when you call for a service issue.
My vehicle died in my driveway and I called for a tow to a service partner as an appointment with the CarMax shop was weeks out. At 1015M The CSR told me that she could schedule a 130 appointment with a shop 5 miles from my house to diagnose the problem and if needed authorize a rental car. She assured me that the tow company could deliver the car in time for the appointment. 30 minutes later the tow company called and said they were running late. I reminded them of the 130 appointment and they assured me they would be on time.
At 45 minutes before the appointment I called Max Care about the tow company. The diagnostic appointment would now be missed. They set me up for a tow from another company with an expected ETA of no longer than 80 minutes. I called the local repair partner to tell them that the car would not arrive on time and he said I never actually had a 130 appointment. CarMax cannot see their schedule and they just try to work it in. And then he said in the afternoons it typically takes hours to get a person on the phone to authorize the work. He said it’s easier to get authorization in the morning. Did not matter because my vehicle wasn’t towed to the shop until after it had closed. Seven and a half hours after making my initial call for assistance. Really glad that I wasn’t stuck on the highway and out of town. Max Care is now a grand waste of money and this is the last vehicle I purchase from CarMax and the last Max Care plan I ever buy.

I’ve had Max Care for the last two years and never had to use it. I bought a used Nissan Pathfinder in 2020. It had 40000 miles on it. Now all of the sudden the engine blew and basically they want me to cover a 2500 dollar charge to diagnose the engine because it has sludge. Without even looking at the car max care is telling me it’s my fault with not keeping maintenance on this car. The mechanic is telling me don’t pay the 2500 because they’re going to deny the repair. It’s close to 20000 for a new engine, So I’m stuck with this car that doesn’t run because they don’t want to pay. My only option is to walk away and lose all equity around 15000 dollars that I’ve paid. I still owe several thousand dollars on the car. So needless to say Carmax knew when they sold me this car that there was a problem with Nissan pathfinders and sludge problems. I guess it’s easier to blame the driver than to pay for engine repairs. I have all maintenance records.

I purchased my truck from Carmax in November 2023. I take my truck to the carmax where I bought it because they have a limited repair facility on site. If they can't fix they send it to the local Ford dealer they use. No problems with that. I have had 3 claims and zero denied. Two of the claims involved replacing seals and gaskets and took a week to complete. They gave me a loaner vehicle also. Don't know why there are so many bad reviews other than you didn't read the warranty and know the limitations. I'm very happy with my warranty from MaxCare. The cost of the warranty is included in my payment and it's very convenient knowing everything is paid at once. Maybe I'm fortunate to have found one of the better carmax dealerships (College Station Tx). I would purchase the MaxCare warranty again if I needed to.

A sincere thank you to the team at CarMax and MaxCare. Everyone I worked with worked especially hard and careful to assist with a major warranty claim with successful results and outcomes with the service centers involved in our vehicle breakdown. The service and attention to detail was exceptional even with a very challenging vehicle breakdown. The experience turned out positive and even though it took much patience and extra efforts to find solutions, it was well worth the wait. I would highly recommend CarMax and MaxCare extended warranties which combined helped save a $60,000 stranded vehicle which would not run and a $12,000 unexpected breakdown bill. Thank you everyone involved.

I purchased a 2016 Mercedes C300 from CarMax. I put $20,000 down and was only financing the MaxCare. I took the vehicle to Mercedes Benz to have the Service A done because CarMax told me that they didn't do it and wouldn't be able to reset that error message. Mercedes told me that there was over $5,000 in repairs needed. I told them that I would use my MaxCare. I found out MaxCare didn't cover. Because I needed a reliable vehicle I decided to sell the vehicle and purchase a new Mercedes on 11/22. MaxCare owed me over $3000 close to $4,000. When I called to cancel the MaxCare I transposed the mileage. So I called back and they said that they couldn't go in and correct. It was a 4,000 difference in the mileage. So now the refund expected had dropped to $3,000.
I have been in contact with them and was told my $2,900 would take 7-10 business days to receive. The refund amount continues to drop. The car has been paid in full. Today's date is 12/19 still no refund. I called CarMax today and spoke with Bria and was advised that it would be 4-6 weeks to get my refund. Why does it take so long to return money back to person that’s owed. I did Everything that I was supposed to do. I told them that I wouldn't use their company ever ok and she said ok. In this case, the customer doesn't matter nor is valued. I paid $20,000, I guess my money should be spent somewhere else.

I purchased my second and last vehicle from Car Max, who sadly has become just another car dealer now. Did get extended warranty through them with Maxcare on a 2018 Chevy Silverado Anniversary Edition. Fell victim to what every mechanic, Chevy dealership, and apparently warranty company refers to as the "Chevy Shudder." Chevy was completely useless as I had suspected even though I was only a few days out of the manufactures warranty...which became more than a few days after more than 2 weeks navigating their "service" portals and jousting with their electronic bots. Never did hear a human voice. Had I known that Chevy sold 800,000 vehicles knowingly with this problem, I wouldn't have bought the car. Should have joined the class action suit. Car Max didn't disclose it either. But Max Care in the lineup takes the cake.
Cashed my check for 1600 for the extended warranty but after taking the truck to Chevy and after Maxcare themselves told me when I called they had three calls already that day for the same thing, refused to cover the expense because filter and fluids don't count as parts. This is a truck, shaking me off the road, and which I had to shelve for two weeks to get into a Chevy dealership for repairs, and because there wasn't a "part" and it was "systemic" they wouldn't cover the cost. The only thing I understand from all this is why the repair shops at Chevy dealerships are always full. Went back to Chevy from Ford. Going back to Ford, or maybe simply walking. Either option is better than the these awful companies and their propaganda about customer service. Read the fine print or make nice with a lawyer. They are worse than insurance companies.

I have had MaxCare Auto Warranty company for both vehicles for many years. I don't know if they are just hiring just 'anybody' because of Covid, or this company is just that bad! I have never had the horrible service I am experiencing now. I have been dealing specifically with their 'CLAIMS' department, and I have been getting the runaround for about a month now! I paid $134 more than my deductible, which I did even think that was possible. I thought you only pay your deductible and no more, but that is not what happened so be aware! MaxCare was/is supposed to reimburse me that amount, but ummmm no. They said they will only reimburse me $111 because of some 'tool' fee from the company that fixed my car, Firestone. That sounds like ** but whatever.
I have spoken to 5 different people from supervisors to just regular workers about sending me my check. First, they said they had a bad address, then they said it was a problem with another section that sends the checks. When I called back two weeks later, they said they still needed my address!!!! This time Max Care has told the dealer to tear the engine down because they don't know what the problem is. That means that if the dealer doesn't find the issue that I would have to pay the estimated $500 for the tear down. What a asinine approach to an automotive problem. When I called Max Care they said tough nuts as that is what their policy says. I asked to speak to a supervisor and they wouldn't comply and in the end the agent just hung up in my ear. I'm going back to Car Max and complain to them because they sold me the warranty and it appears that they have skin in the game with Max Care which makes both of them sleazy.

I am now being stuck with a bill because CARMAX and MaxCare want to play back-and-forth that who's at fault for my car. They are trying to stick me with the bill. I bought this warranty so they would cover everything on the car and I'm not able to utilize it because no one will take fault for the problem at hand. I have supplied everything they've asked for and they are still giving me the runaround. What's even worse is the shop I have my car at has a several cars there that are in the same predicament as mine as carmax Max care will not cover the fixes they to be done.
Not only are they sticking me with a $1700 bill for taking the car apart they are trying to get me to pay $1300 more to have the valve cover taken off so one additional picture can be sent in when that was the inspector's responsibility to make sure the car was how he needed to be able to take pictures. I would never recommend going to carmax for a car or using MaxCare to find a warranty plan.

Updated on 08/20/2022: This is a continuation of a Previous Post documenting my experience with CarMax's MaxCare Warranty. So my 2017 Ford Escape is in the shop for a total engine replacement with approximately 71,000 miles. My first call when my check engine light came on was to CarMax's Service Department. They were unable to give me an appointment to drop off the car for TWO entire weeks. Here I was without an operational vehicle and, even though they were unable to get me in for two weeks, MaxCare only covers 1 week of vehicle rental at $40 a day (the cheapest car rental available in my area is $46 a day). The rental would be over before the vehicle was able to even be seen by CarMax. I spoke with management in the Service Department and, basically, they will do nothing to remedy this situation (no loaner car, no contacting MaxCare for an extension, nothing, no help at all).
Updated on 08/18/2022: This is a continuation of my post from the other day (Day 2 of 7). I contacted the CarMax Roseville location where I purchased my vehicle in 2019 to share my frustration about the TERRIBLE experience that I had with their MaxCare Vehicle Warranty Customer Service. I spoke at length with the woman that answered, she put me on hold then came back and said that she was transferring me to a Supervisor in the Vehicle Maintenance Dept (She said they were the ones that handled warranty issues). I assumed that she was transferring me directly to someone . . . NOPE, I went into voicemail. I left a message and TWO DAYS LATER, I still have not received a return call. This is how CarMax treats customers. Stay tuned for Post #3 tomorrow. . . Yes, there is more to the story.
Original review: I cannot believe that a reputable company like CarMax is even affiliated with MaxCare Warranty. My experience over the past week will definitely make me think twice about ever purchasing another vehicle from CarMax. I purchased a vehicle in 2019 from CarMax with 46,000 miles on it. Just last week at only 72,000 miles the car needs a complete engine replacement. It is difficult enough that parts are hard to come by putting a lot of extra pressure on repair shops to get jobs done. I confirmed with the repair shop that they had sent all requested documentation to MaxCare (which they had) and I next reached out to MaxCare just to confirm that things were moving along. For some reason, even though the repair facility had already provided everything to MaxCare and was waiting for MaxCare to give authorization to proceed, the idiot at MaxCare kept insisting that they were an 'Incoming Call Center Only' and that the repair shop was somehow to know that they needed to call them back for authorization.
I kept asking for them to please explain their procedure to me and all that the idiot at CarMax kept saying is 'We are an Incoming Call Center Only' . . . basically meaning that they do not call anyone back. The more that I asked about the procedure, I kept getting the same stupid response. I hung up and called the repair shop again and they had no idea that the ball was back in their court to call MaxCare again for authorization. My car has already been sitting in the shop for 1 week today. Hey CarMax, why would you have such a stupid system in place where the client (me) could never get a call back and the repair shop could never get a call back. Seriously, an 'Incoming Call Center Only' to handle questions on repairing vehicles. CarMax, you should be ashamed. I am going to write something each day for a week about these idiots. Stayed tuned.

My partner and I purchased our MaxCare plan in late 2020, and it has been an unmitigated nightmare ever since. We just tried for the first time in a year and a half to get in contact with CarMax, and while the last time we spoke with them was bad enough (no two people that we spoke with were able to give us the same information), we discovered this time around that they've taken their contact information completely offline, I assume because their reviews are universally negative. Out of desperation, we contacted the Carmax corporate office in Richmond, VA to get Maxcare's contact information, because we had an electric motor failure & had no other option (the car that we bought from Carmax has been plagued with constant & myriad electrical failures), and it's been a constantly combative process ever since we've made contact.
They say that they need a diagnostic code to get a claim started, which is reasonable enough, but they have barely any shops that they work with directly, and there aren't any facilities of theirs that will even get us in the door until late July (it's June 2nd as I write this), and it's becoming clear to me that they make it maximally difficult to actually make good on your warranty by partnering with next to nobody, and not beginning a claim until a car is in the shop & has a diagnostic code, which is impossible to do since they don't proactively work with anything like a reasonable number of mechanics.
Maxcare also, in our experience, has a history of doing everything in its power to deny claims in a bad-faith way. In a previous instance when we'd had a mechanical failure, we'd managed, after significant hassle, to get the car in with an approved facility that worked with Maxcare, where it sat in the shop. The mechanic said there was clearly something going on with our AC compressor, but they would need to run a diagnostic to get a better sense of what exactly was happening, and Maxcare told him that he WASN'T ALLOWED to perform the additional diagnostic. It was one of the most stunning, breathtaking instances of a bad-faith/fraudulent business practice that I had ever seen.
Run, do not walk, away from any offer that you're ever given for a Maxcare extended warranty. For the love of God, save yourself the hassle, just go to a dealership & get a used car. The cars themselves will usually be in better condition than at Carmax, and just about any extended warranty/CPO/etc. that you get from a dealer or third party will be infinitely more useful to you than this worthless nothing of a policy.

I have purchased three cars from Carmax over the years, and I have always had a good experience using their MaxCare warranty. My first car I purchased around 2005 with a MaxCare warranty had a problem with one of the windows (it would not raise or lower). It also had some trouble with the weather stripping. I asked them if they could fix it, and they took the car in. It took them a little longer than they originally expected because they were waiting on the part. I didn't think I would need a rental at first, but since it took a couple of extra days, I went ahead and got a rental, which they covered. The process could have been faster, but they covered the window and even though the weather stripping wasn't covered, they fixed it anyway.
My second car, I never needed to take in for repairs. My third car, I have taken in twice, with a possible third time coming up. The first time I took it in, there was something wrong with the cables that connected to the battery (I'm not a mechanic so pardon my ignorance on what was wrong), so that when I turned the car off at the gas station, it did not turn back on when I was finished. I had it towed to CarMax using my Geico towing and CarMax quickly helped me to get a free rental and repaired the car in a couple of days. Since I took it to CarMax, it was free.
The second time I took my third car in, I had trouble with the automatic locks (only working intermittently), the turn signal (sticking when I turned right, having to hold onto it to make it work for a left turn), and the heated windows (not working to de-ice the rear window). It turns out the heated windows weren't covered, so I didn't worry about that. They replaced the automatic locking system and the turn signal, and gave me a free rental until it was fixed. I also didn't pay anything for them to fix it since I brought it to CarMax.
My advice to anyone considering the MaxCare coverage is to research and make sure to read the fine print. Find out exactly what is covered and what isn't, so there won't be any surprises when your car needs repairs. Make sure to make your payments on time, and make sure to take your car to get the oil changed regularly, since certain things won't be covered if it's due to not maintaining your vehicle properly. Also, pay close attention to how long the coverage lasts. It's usually a certain amount of miles OR a certain number of years (whichever comes first). Be careful to know how long it's valid so you don't accidentally try to file a claim and it won't be covered due to being out of date.
TL;DR: Maxcare Coverage worked well for me!

Maxcare is an absolute waste of time and money! I am going through the claims process today 11-2-2020 and all they've done is deny me after all the money I paid for the insurance. I purchased my vehicle through Carmax and asked for a bumper to bumper extended warranty which they guaranteed me maxcare was. Three months into the car and the catalytic converter breaks...no coverage. One year into the car and the battery doesn't work due to the moon roof having a short so it won't close causing water to leak onto my battery.
They won't cover my alternator being completely broken because of the battery saying they don't cover water damage. Even though the policy states it covers electrical issues. I ask to speak to a supervisor and apparently the company only has two that are all unavailable. They charge an extra 50 dollars on your deductible if you choose your own mechanic. The mechanics that are "in house" are all very far away as most mechanics specifically state they won't deal with them as they often do denials and leave people hanging. DO NOT BUY THIS. DO ANYTHING ELSE BUT NOT MAXCARE. I'm calling the Better Business Bureau!!

I purchased my vehicle in December of 2016 at Carmax in Merriam, Ks. They told me all the good stuff you want to hear and I even read the warranty. Keep in mind I have operated in the car business for 5 years myself. I bought the vehicle with 61,586 on the miles. Just hit 93,000. So 32k in 4 years and I live in Kansas mind you. Over the weekend I was driving in town and my driver side drive axle snapped in half. I pay to have the vehicle towed to my show. They see that it snapped and let me know. So I contact Maxcare to file a claim and find out about the reimbursement process. The first guy I spoke with was pretty nice but you could tell was kinda lost. He places me on hold while he types up his report. Comes back and asks me for my phone number. I provided my number.
A few minutes later his phone dropped the call and he never attempted to call me back (this was after 15 minutes on hold initially and then about 15 minutes with him on the phone. I call back and wait 22 minutes before my call is taken. Called back to verify what else I needed to do so I could get the claim moving and get my tow reimbursement. Find out the first guy put the tow and the repair under different claim numbers. That was wrong so I provided my shop with the wrong number.
So I had to contact them with the repair number not the tow number I was told that was correct. Then the CSR places me on hold for 5-10 minutes and comes back telling me both him and the previous CSR told me incorrectly. That those were numbers they use internally and that I would get the actual claim # when it is approved. That when it was approved I would need to call back again to get the NPA sent out because they have no process to automatically do it. I asked the guy to places notes to have the claims adjuster send it out when approved. He said they don't do it that way. He said" I can put notes in the claim but the adjuster probably won't do it". I went rounds about how inconvenient it was and how I am doing all the work for my warranty reimbursement and they don't do ANYTHING! He just said "I understand" over and over with no provided solution or attempt to save me the time.
I informed him I have spent over an hour of my day with them already. I don't have time to keep calling back and to sit on hold to have my call answered 20 minutes later. Only to get incorrect info both times. Again he could have cared less. Then comes the drive axle that snapped in half and the repair shop contacted Maxcare to speak with the claims adjuster. Only to be told that it was denied after the shop sent them the picture showing it snapped. They said it rusted through. It absolutely did NOT rust through and just had some surface rust. The shop explained to them it was not a failure of the part due to rust, over and over. They denied the claim and I had to pay another $260 out of pocket after the $105 tow I already have paid.
Called to speak with a supervisor and she again said it was my fault it's rusted and that the corrosion was the failure. Even after I explained I have worked in warranty and even seen the part myself. There was zero loss of shaft shape and I didn't hit anything. Of course it will have surface rust after 4 years in Kansas weather with snow. Again she could have cared less and said the claim is denied. These people are a fraud and will NOT cover your repairs like they say. This was my first and only claim presented in 4 years almost. I would NEVER recommend these frauds to anyone and buyer beware!!!! Keep in mind I paid $2200 for this extended warranty. NOT worth it!!!

My engine goes out a year later and MAXCARE gives me the run around for about 1 and half months. Just to deny my claim... they would NOT replace my engine or pay for a rental while my car was being fixed I had my maintenance receipts and everything. Why make a customer pay on time every month if they CANNOT use the service or warranty!! I would NOT recommend CarMax ESPECIALLY Maxcare to anyone! They are not for the customer!!

I learned this wasn't the case when I got the estimate for the repairs back from my mechanic. A few more phone calls to the MaxCare provider later, I got to someone who told me honestly that labor up to a certain point is covered based on national labor allowances. The service guy called them, I called them, the service manager called them to explain the nature of the failure which should have been completely covered and all they would say is, "I'm sorry. We are not going to cover it." REALLY... Don't buy this warranty, you will only get screwed in the end. Period. You will be better off taking the money and putting it in an account....at least it will be worth that much when you need it. CarMax....you should be ashamed!! My wife and I purchased a Honda Odyssey and elected to purchase the top tier MaxCare warranty plan (a $50 deductible) because of the scope of the coverage. We used it to easily change an alternator about 9 months later without any issue. However, our van had a flashing check engine light come on about 6 weeks ago. The MaxCare warranty department decided that the work that needed to be done would not be covered due to "lack of routine maintenance" even though we have all the records proving otherwise. The CarMax-certified repair facility we're using even agreed with our position and contacted MaxCare on our behalf and were told that the claim would be denied (even though the reasons given were NOT routine maintenance items). Long story short - we may be out at least $600 in repairs/labor because MaxCare has decided that they will not honor the warranty provided.

THEY DID NOT COVER A PENNY.
They said they cover “only mechanical issues.” My condenser that needs to be replaced is considered a mechanical issue. The part is a condenser radiator dual part meaning it’s sold as an assembly which is about $600 and they denied it. I’m not sure why it cracked but I told them maybe I hit a rock or something and they said they wouldn’t cover it because it wasn’t a malfunction in the part. They need to do an inspection before approving it but why does an inspection need to be done if I was just told it won’t be covered because it wasn’t a part failure? In the 3 years I’ve had their warranty, I haven’t used it once because they didn’t want to cover anything. We purchased a 2012 Nissan Rogue from CarMax, with the MaxCare Extended Warranty up to 100,000 miles. At 91,000 miles the car shook to a stop and went dead. We called MaxCare and they told us they would cover a wrecker and we could send it to any repair shop that is authorized. I looked up the nearest one and MaxCare stated they were approved. So we had it TOWED to that location.
The service shop diagnosed the problem as the radiator had blown out and leaked coolant into the engine causing the spark plugs to be fouled and damaging the engine beyond repair. Maxcare paid to repair the radiator that caused the problem, but refused to pay for the engine. We called MaxCare several times trying to get an understanding as to why they are covering the part (radiator) that caused all the damage, but not the parts (engine) that were ruined as a result.
MaxCare representatives first claimed that after the car stopped working on the day of the radiator being blown, we continued to drive it, driving it to the repair facility. We pointed out that we did not drive it, and they are actually paying for the TOW bill showing they towed it. They then transferred me to a "Supervisor" who stated that it wasn't because we drove it, but it was denied due to "Never having coolant in the vehicle EVER". We stated that is impossible and ridiculous over the life of any car to never have coolant in it. We asked to see the inspector's report (that they sent) that they used to deny claim and they stated that it is "in house only" and won't release it.
We spoke to an attorney who then pointed out that in the warranty contract, we agreed to arbitration with MaxCare to resolve any issues, and to call Maxcare back and clarify the exact reason it is being denied. We called back a third time, and MaxCare again stated that we drove the car to the repair shop (I again pointed out the wrecker charge). They then stated "The car has never had COOLANT, causing the radiator to blow out, which in turn caused COOLANT to leak into the engine". I pointed out the obvious mistake that coolant couldn't leak into the engine if it never had coolant in it.
I asked for the mistakes to be changed, and they stated no. I asked who made these mistakes and who to contact about it. The "Supervisor" stated that there was no one to contact or to appeal to, and we would have to go ahead with our choice to go to arbitration. She stated she knew CarMax was being evasive, but there was no one else for us to speak to about the obvious mistakes/lies.

For anyone that has ever needed to replace their pistons you know it is a huge repair expense (around $6300 for an Audi A4) because of the required engine teardown! There were also 2 minor oil leaks that needed repairing (around $800.00). MaxCare approved the repairs within 2 hours of being requested. I was working with the Audi Dealership Service Department in Annapolis so these were repairs made by Audi trained mechanics. The only caveat was to provide my service records to show that I was keeping up with the manufacturer recommended routine services (which I had been, thank Goodness).
I would say that I have gotten my money's worth with this warranty. I bought the 125k/6 year warranty for around 4k and I am so glad that I did!!! It has paid for itself and then some and I can now rest easy that I was only out of pocket my deductible (which is pretty high at $500.00) but given the over 7k in repairs, I will gladly pay that in lieu of what it would have been. I still have 35k miles and almost 2 years left on this warranty. I truly hope that I do not need it, but if I do, I have peace of mind knowing that I have it.

My car broke down a month and a half ago and having the MaxCare Extended Warranty, I took my car to the local CarMax Service Center. After having the diagnostics, I was told by the technician that the car's issue was with the alternator having voltage issues which damaged the battery (this was also stated on the technician's report). Seeing how alternator issues were covered by my warranty, I was shocked to hear that MaxCare denied my claim due to "battery issues" as they claimed that the battery was faulty and thus damaged my alternator.
I don't know if they were simply trying to take advantage of the fact that I am a college student who doesn't know much about cars but the fact that they lied to me about the cause in order to weasel their way out of having to pay for the repair was just appalling. I had to fight this for over two weeks by calling MaxCare and the Service Center every single business day and miraculously, the technician and his manager somehow got the claim approved on the third week.

Oh and since my car has been literally sitting in the Service Center's garage for a month, MaxCare was so kind enough to provide me with just one week's worth of car rental. Anything else is out of pocket. I appreciate everything that the technician from my local Service Center did for me. I wiggled the cable, got the truck started and took it home. After researching how to repair I noticed several YouTube videos on the subject. Apparently this happens often. It is not a simple replacement of the connector.
You have to replace the entire harness and it has to be purchased from a Ford service center. Planet Ford customer service agent Marcella ** contacted MAXCARE and they told her it was not covered. I then contacted agent Dale ** and he refused to allow the warranty because of negligence stating the battery corroded and burned the cable and batteries are not covered.
I countered that it is not the battery. It is the cable and should be covered for the life of the warranty. Normal maintenance procedure has you check under the hood once a month. This was done less than a month ago when it received the Texas State inspection for September 2019 along with an oil change and all fluids were checked as well. There was not a problem with battery corrosion at that time. The positive battery cable connector is 1/16 inch thick and copper. It was entirely melted except for a 1/4 span. I maintain that I maintained proper maintenance verified by my recent Texas state inspection and this should be covered by warranty.

I was really nervous about what we would have to go through when we submitted our first warranty claim. Yesterday my husband took our van into our local repair shop because of some clunking noises we had been hearing, and they found that there was a stabilizer bar that had broken and also noted that the rack and pinion were starting to leak. We had the auto shop call Maxcare's number to get preauthorization to work on it, and they gave it over the phone that morning. We had to pay for another repair on our own because it wasn't covered, but the two things mentioned above were covered by Maxcare and saved us $1,100. We got our car back by the end of the day totally repaired. So far, so good!

I purchased the $3500 Maxcare Auto Warranty when I purchased my 740i BMW. I started having issues with my engine, so it was taken to the BMW dealer. It took over two weeks for my car to be fixed with included a week of dead time due to hurricane Irma (Sept 2017). We paid for our rental (which is suppose to be reimbursed), submitted all required paperwork and receipts to Maxcare so that they could send us our check. Well as of today Jan 2018, we have made numerous attempts to see what the hold up was and every time we speak with someone, they tell us it’s being processed and there’s nothing else for them to do.
All we want is for them to follow through on their end. I recently contacted someone else via email, and again the representative stated that she was sorry and they will be sending it out!! I don’t feel secure that it will be sent “this time” either, because we’ve been told this so many times before!! We just want what’s due to us... which was stated in the contract, reimbursement from our rental car payment!!

I took my car to the dealership as there were metal fragments in my oil and the vehicle was running rough. I was told that I needed an engine. I told them I had this Carmax warranty. The dealership called the warranty and was told that I had to authorize time for them to teardown the engine to find the exact cause. This cost me $900 just for the teardown just to have the engine replaced. That was half the cost of the engine. This is such a ** warranty and do not recommend to anyone!!! What's the point of paying for a warranty if I'm going to have to fork up more money just to use it?

So I brought my 2013 Lincoln MKZ into Carmax in Westborough where I purchased the vehicle about a year ago because the rear end was making a lot of noise. Come to find out the rear air suspension was faulty and wasn't working. Bought the Maxcare warranty $3500 for repairs like this. No problem right? Nope. Get a call at 12 saying Maxcare refused to pay for anything. ** joke. Now I'm stuck with a $1000 bill and mind you the car only has 40,000 miles on it. Shouldn't be replacing air suspension at those miles. I called them today and asked for my money back. Will never use them again. Huge waste of money and time.

We purchased the CarMax warranty. It allegedly covers major repairs. So when our car did not start we phoned to see if we could get the car towed there for repairs. Their response was that we could do that but would have to wait 10 days for the repair to take place. What good is that? This is my second bad experience. The first time I phoned CarMax to get a simple oil change the lines were busy so I left a message for a call back. They never called back. What good is the warranty with that kind of service?

I bought a car from Carmax and accepted the extended warranty from the sales associate, who said it was the greatest thing since sliced bread... Confirmed that I could simply "bring the car to any authorized repair place or dealership, pay $300 for the repair (on covered items), and get a loaner vehicle while the service was being done." Great, right? Wrong. It's been so much more complicated, and I still don't have a loaner vehicle. Eleven months after I purchased my car, the engine began to eat itself. I heard a loud knocking. Brought it to a Hyundai dealership directly for servicing (Carmax wouldn't make me an in-house appointment for two weeks-- they suggested I continue to drive/damage the car in the meantime!).
Hyundai diagnosed it the same morning I dropped it off. It was bad. They called to confirm the warranty service with MaxCare. The insurance company immediately demanded my last oil change receipt. "J'ACCUSE!" They want to blame this on me. Great. Luckily, I value my car, so I change my oil. I had a receipt. I sent it. Later, the same day: They are now trying to decide (while I wait, in limbo) if the oil change receipt is valid, because it contains my license plate number but not my VIN number. I assure you, it's a valid receipt, and the oil has been regularly changed. Are they suggesting that I might have pulled the engine out of my car, found another identical vehicle, pulled out its engine, swapped it with mine, got the oil changed, then un-swapped it, therefore rendering the warranty void?
If I had access to a shop where I could just randomly pull engines, I wouldn't be driving a Hyundai and I wouldn't be shopping at CarMax. They are also leaving me without a loaner vehicle until they decide whether or not to honor this claim. All I did was purchase a car and a warranty. I hate being treated like a criminal, being without a loaner vehicle, and being given the runaround by this MaxCare (DBA The Warranty Group) company. I specifically got it for peace of mind, so I knew car repairs would never get in the way of me driving to work. So far, this is not my experience.
Incidentally, the people at North Bethesda Hyundai are superb. They're doing their best, but are, though no fault of their own, caught in the same agreement I am, because of the extended warranty. I've already spent $25 on an Uber to get to work this morning and will probably take a few more of those before all of this is settled. Let's see how long this goes...

The last time I brought my car to MaxCare (the car service within CarMax), they told me my headlight was non-operative and that I need to replace the entire panel. I asked them several times why I had to replace them all since, first I got them replaced less than a year ago and second, the headlight was on and off randomly, not like it was off all the times. They did not provide any explanation and told me that's the only way to fix it. I agreed since I trust their professionalism. When I got my car back, the next evening, the same issue happened when the headlight was on and off within 5 minutes each time I turned the engine on.
I took several pictures and brought the car back. At first, they told me there was nothing wrong but I insisted and showed them the picture. They agreed to keep the car for another 24 hours and decided to change the switch. It worked after that. But then, when I asked them, why we had to change the all headlights earlier because obviously, it did not fix the problem. They could not answer me clearly either and just said it was a different problem. Now, I feel like I cannot trust their service anymore.

After a week, they towed the car to a dealer. It was more than 8 days before they determined the cause. Maxcare reps finally authorized a rental car and said that they would call the car rental company to set up a direct pay. However, when I turned the car in, no payment was set up. The repair shop had attempted to contact MAxcare since July 13, 2017, but every time we have called Maxcare extended warranty, they would not answer the phone calls or kept us on hold after we explained to them my car needs repairing.
On July 19, 2017, I was finally able to contact someone from MaxCare after four days of trying to call them which I found out Maxcare call center is based in Mexico. The next day I get a call from Enterprise Rental Car telling me the insurance have not made any arrangements on billing them. I get to the Enterprise Rental Car. I give them my credit card leaving my car at the repair shop, I get a call from the repair shop from Dee Dee, the front receptionist the store calls me and tells me Maxcare could not send out adjudicator because they don't have the repair shop information. But Dee Dee and I had spent 30 minutes with the Maxcare setting up the entire service to my car.
On 07/20/2017 the adjustor Roy came out to see my vehicle. He left and never updated the shop on if the repairs were approved or not. Maxcare is purposely giving me the runaround so that I do not work completed on my car like my contract states. I would like for Maxcare to pay for my repairs in a timely matter. The repair shop and I both have done our part by having my car diagnosis, and I paid for the contract of 1699.00 for this extended warranty and never used it at all. The following Monday, I took it to a local GM dealer, and they said that would contact Maxcare before they would start to do any work. They gave me a vague idea of what was wrong, but it didn't seem to be such a big deal. They then called and said that Maxcare had to have someone come out and inspect the car. I was immediately worried, because of all of the bad reviews I have read online. Then I got the call a few days later saying that Maxcare would be taking care of the issue. I still didn't think much of it. I was just glad that they didn't deny coverage.
I just got my car back about 30 minutes ago and looked at the invoice. The work was extensive and the total Maxcare paid was $6701.28!!! I only paid my $50 deductible and $18.90 for the tax on the rental. I must say, if I didn't have the Maxcare warranty, there is no way I would have been able to come up with $7000 for a car repair! When I purchased my Maxcare Warranty from CarMax, I assumed CarMax was underwriting the warranty (Car MAX = MAX care). They do not. MaxCare is a third-party vendor. That means CarMax does not stand behind the warranty, but it does hide behind the fine print. I went in with a list of 8 minor and 1 mid-level problem with my car, having purchased a 150,000 mile warranty through MaxCare. I was told that each item would incur a $59.95 diagnostic charge at Carmax, and if MaxCare denied the repair(s) as not being covered by the warranty, I would have to pay the diagnostic fee for each denied claim to CarMax. This seemed unreasonable, since I was simply inquiring as to whether or not the items would be covered under the warranty, and I assumed CarMax would tell me what was covered, what was not covered and give me the option of repairing the uncovered ones. That is what I believed I had purchased. I had not.
At this point I was directed to the business center so they could listen to me complain about the warranty. However, the business center does not approve repairs, so to get approval I would have to speak with the service manager. The service manager told me what their fee schedule is and that they have to diagnose the problem and forward it to the warranty company, and that is something they, like all auto repair shops, do. If I had questions about the warranty he would be glad to bring me over to the business center, and he was sorry if someone in sales was not clear about my purchase, but he could not do anything about that since he was only involved in repairs. That's when I understood how the scam works. It goes like this: CarMax offers a third-party warranty with a company whose name sounds like it is a part of CarMax, but it is not.
CarMax makes no effort to dispel this misunderstanding with prospective buyers. Hence, I say it is deceptive and misleading. The business center draws up the paperwork that the salesperson orders and the business center has you sign it, not the salesperson. This compartmentalizes and insulates the actions of each department from the other with no one being accountable for the entire customer experience. Once the salesperson has his/her commission, it's sayonara, baby. The business center handles the warranty complaints, and cheerfully offered to refund my money on a prorated basis if I did not like the terms (just thinking about the most likely schedule for proration they would then lay out was more than I could take at that moment, since my head would have split open when I learned the pittance I would be due). They did not sell it to me, and they do not make service decisions. That's sales and service, respectively.
The service department is it's own profit center. It's essentially a privately run auto shop inside a Carmax. They will do everything a private auto repair shop does, and nothing on behalf of Carmax. I'm sure Carmax directly pays them to run the 150 point inspections and everything else, and I would not be surprised to find out they pay rent there, although I have no idea.
Each department is completely separate in its duties. There is no one who will come out and talk to you who has authority over all the departments, or even over more than one. Hence, the service department is not responsible for how the warranty works, the sales person does not deal with warranty issues, and the business department simply had me sign the papers the sales department ordered, but I am the one who signed them. They have insulated themselves from complaints about the warranties because no one person or department is ultimately in charge of the entire process, at least not anyone I have been able to locate yet.
Ultimately, I believe I will have to file a complaint against CarMax with the BBB in order to get some leverage. If the BBB will send a complaint to CarMax requesting they respond to me, then one of the suits may get motivated to pick up the phone and give me a reason to tell the BBB that I am satisfied with the manner in which they resolved the complaint. Short of that, I'll just take the little things to a local guy who is both honest and inexpensive, and save the warranty for the big-ticket items.

This extended warranty process is a scam - buyer beware. It resulted in five phone calls totaling over 3 hours of my personal time to get the situation resolved. They were arguing with Mercedes over $150 in labor and wanted my car to be towed to another dealership for repair that was 30 minutes away. This fiasco added an additional two days to the repair process. They FINALLY agreed to approve it being repaired at the dealership it was originally towed to but it was an extremely frustrating and exhausting process. I was told multiple times that no supervisor was available to speak with me - "they were in a 2 hour meeting".
However, after I lost my composure, and demanded a supervisor, I got sent to voicemail. Needless to say that didn't help matters. Once I called for the fifth time and again demanded a supervisor, I was transferred to one. That involved an extensive conversation where he very unhappily agreed to fulfill my request but informed me he would not honor it again moving forward... HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. We just brought our car to Maine, we purchased when we lived in Florida. The car failed inspection. We need new tires, new brake pads and rotors. We only had this car a year and were told when we bought it all the tires were brand new. They showed us repair slips showing they put new brake pads and that everything passed inspection. The rotors were supposed to be new too. Now all need repairs which will cost us 600 plus dollars. The tires which have been driven maybe 3000 miles are all cracked and we are told must be at least 7 years old. Which means they were old and used when they put them on the car. Brake pads and rotors are not new and are the original ones never replaced.
We called CarMax where we bought the car, said "that's too bad, they are covered so call Maxcare." We did and nope none of this is covered. We paid almost $2000 for this Maxcare which now that I can finally find a copy of what is covered I see that nothing is covered. They are ripping people off and lying to them. Even today they lied to me on the phone. I called back and they said they are sorry they must have read the information wrong. Wow how can you read we cover brake pads and rotors under the section marked not covered. They did repair the back window defrost when we were in Florida that never worked and fixed the damage they caused when opening some panels. But refused to fix a problem with one of the window seals that we complained about when we bought it which they told us before we signed the loan that they had fixed it. Found out 2 days later that was a lie too.
Do not trust these people. Do not buy from them. They prey on people with bad credit and low income. We didn't have great credit at the time and didn't have a large downpayment so we had no choice. Come to find out we could have gone down the road and got the same car cheaper and with a 7.5% interest rate instead of 22.5%.

They refuse to make the recommended repairs. My 2007 Yukon 1500 XL (84,000 miles) is burning 1qt of oil every 1,000 miles. Chevrolet's repair plan is to add a baffle and clean the engine for carbon build-up (total cost per Molle Chevrolet in Blue Springs, MO is $4,000).
MaxCare will not clean a engine for carbon build up as that is normal wear and tear and they will not add a part (baffle) that was not originally on the vehicle. If my motor were to break for any reason here on out, that would not be covered either as it would be due to a pre existing condition. Per Molle Chevrolet, the oil issue is typical on all engines my size prior to 2011. So all in all, the MaxCare extended bumper to bumper warranty that I paid $1,000 for through Carmax is worthless and all Chevy/GMC engines prior to 2011 will burn a lot of oil.

I went along with it and this salvaged transmission lasted only 5 months. My vehicle has now been down a total of 4 months!
What makes this such a lousy policy is the clause in there for them to use like, kind and quality parts when available but in this case they have already spent way more in rental and labor using these junkyard parts than if they just used a quality remanufactured part to begin with. After owning my car less than one year and driving my car less than 6400 miles, it began having mechanical issues. While I had the car I changed the oil as indicated and did not do anything but drive the car back and forth to work. My car is a used 2012 Mercedes GLK 350 that was purchased from CarMax. I tried to make an appointment with CarMax but they were too busy to get the car in when the pinging in the engine started. They indicated that my warranty allowed me to take it anywhere. I took the car to the nearest Mercedes dealership. They found that the engine and electrical system needed to be replaced which would cost more than $25,000. They did note that the oil was low in the car. They said this was probably a symptom of the overall system failure of the vehicle as low oil would not cause an engine to fail.
Additionally because I had not put a lot of miles on the car, the car was defective when I bought it and the dealership most likely knew it when they sold it to me. Mercedes usually do not fail in this manner. Regardless, this is why you buy a warranty. However, that was two months ago and my car is still in the shop because MaxCare refuses to pay for anything. They won't even pay the $750 diagnostic fee that need to be paid to figure out the problem. Every time you call them they put you to voicemail. They refuse to address the issue. Now I have a worthless car with a huge payment that I thought I protected with what is a worthless warranty.
To top it off, I am very ill and am off of work on medical leave and the stress of the situation has caused me to return the hospital on more than one occasion. I am suppose to avoid all stress as I try to recover but that is impossible given this company's irresponsible and horrible business tactics. MaxCare is one of the worst companies I have come in contact with and CarMax is just as bad. Do not do business with either one.

I purchased the MaxCare warranty because it covered up to 150,000 miles. I know most vehicles start having major mechanical breakdowns at 100,000 miles. I do keep records of maintenance to my vehicles. Maybe it's OCD but I learned the hard way before. The automatic transmission will last about 100,000 miles if you do not service it. Once I bought the car, I had all the fluids changed. At 110,000 miles, the transmission started slipping. MaxCare did ask for the service receipt for the transmission and I provided it to them. There was no bickering, delay, or issues. I paid the $300 deductible and had my car back 3 days later. I was happy with the warranty because the transmission and labor came out to $4,200.

We were very lucky to have an acquaintance loan us a car because it took the service provider 59 days to complete the job, primarily due to MaxCare delays. Our daughter's car broke down on 24AUG15. The CarMax dealer told us they could not work on the car until sometime after 9SEP15. I am sure most people do not have an extra car to drive in case one breaks. MaxCare does provide a 7 day (<$40/day) rental during service, which was meaningless for the odyssey we experienced. Since CarMax wouldn't even look at the car until 9SEP, we took the Toyota to a Toyota Service Center. The service provider provided Maxcare with pictures and description of the broken engine the same day, 24AUG15. It took more than 7 days for MaxCare to tell the service provider to go ahead and then more than another 7 days for MaxCare to provide the service provider with an engine.
My only experience in this situation is an engine replacement I needed in Charleston, WV which was completed by the Toyota Service Center in 5 business days including the day I dropped the car off and the day I picked it up. Anyway, the first engine provided was no good. The service provider could not get the engine to time correctly. Again, it took MaxCare more than a week to agree to another engine and more than a week to provide the engine to the service provider. While the engine replacement was going on the service provider found other issues with the car, which MaxCare was also slow giving the go ahead.
We are very fortunate we did not have to rent a car. Our daughter needs to car to commute ~35 miles to school and drive to work. The rental minus the 7 days covered by would have cost us ~$2080, basically because of the non-responsiveness of MaxCare. Also we still needed to pay over $1100 after what MaxCare did pay for because the MaxCare agreement doesn't cover all things that need to be done around the engine when replacing an engine. The engine replacement I had done in West Virginia had a total cost ~$3,500. MaxCare needs to work on its customer service.

Good morning, I wanted to follow up and make a new entry that the MaxCare Warranty we purchased from Ford is not all it’s cracked up to be and has made it difficult for me to get work done on my car. My door sensors were going bad on my car and realizing we had purchased extended warranty via MaxCare they starting working with Ford but ended up not wanting to pay Ford so it made Ford's Customer Service look bad but on the contrary Ford was bending over backwards to make the warranty work for us as customers. MaxCare is very difficult. At the end of the day Ford had to absorb most of the cost to my car to satisfy us as customers. I believe the Ford was not at fault and that MaxCare didn't want to comply with their warranty contract we purchased to have for these type of issues. Sad to say I would not be shocked if Ford decides not to sell MaxCare's extended warranty for them and drops them and finds a more cooperative warranty company! Just my thoughts about MaxCare. So disappointed. :(

I purchased a 2011 Hyundai Elantra from CarMax in 2014. I loved the car itself but had some really bad luck with it. It broke down in July of this year and when it was sent to CarMax to be fixed under warranty, I decided to trade it in. Once my car was "fixed", they sent it to the dealership I was working with. The salesmen went to test drive my Elantra to make sure it was fixed and it didn't make it out of the parking lot of the dealership before it broke down again. He placed my car back on the truck and sent it back to wherever CarMax had it being fixed. It took at least a week for my car to be returned back to the dealership, again claiming it was "fixed". This time the dealership ordered a mechanic to inspect the vehicle and he found that again they hadn't fixed my car. The Kia dealership didn't want to hassle with it anymore and just said they'd complete the repairs themselves.
Now my car is fixed but the warranty department refuses to pay the $700 repair charges to Kia. In the meantime, I can't get to my Elantra until the charges are paid. And I can't get the new car until everything is done with the Elantra. This has been since July. I'm a full time student with no vehicle for going on three months now. This has been the worst process and I'm ready for it to be over. CarMax and the Warranty Center both have the WORST customer service I've ever experienced. The level of professionalism is beyond unacceptable. I'll never do any type of business with them or recommend anyone I know to use them for anything again. Hopefully my nightmare will end soon and I won't have to associate with them anymore.

I have 07 GMC Sierra I purchased thru Carmax June 2012. I hooked up a boat and trailer to the truck and noticed my transmission was acting up around spring 2013. The engine would rev up really high so I would let off the gas and the truck would jerk to the next gear with a hard kick. I took it in for service, dealt with (Della south austin location). She sent the truck off to a transmission shop and they told her they could not recreate the transmission issue. This was in 2013 that I still have a voicemail from her stating they couldn't do anything for me since they didn't feel the kick in shifting gears. Della is no longer with carmax and hasn't been since 2013.
I take it back in for the same issues (Aug 20th 2015). The transmission is acting up without pulling any extra weight now. Maxcare authorized the transmission shop to take apart the transmission to find the problem. I was told that the issue is a cracked clutch housing. Now Maxcare is playing their famous "runaround" game asking for transmission service records which I provided and still haven't approved the claim. What I don't understand is the authorization of taking apart the transmission but not fixing it and putting it back together. What sense does that make maxcare? The sole purpose of me purchasing the warranty was they claimed to cover the transmission. Now that I need a new transmission they are doing everything in their power not to pay for it. Am I asking too much for Maxcare to HONOR their warranty that has been paid in full already!

Maxcare paid for the repairs to my car and is running like new!
Original Review: Aug. 15, 2015
I purchased a 2010 BMW 550i GT from CarMax in Jan 2013, with this I purchased the extended warranty for 7 years or 75000 miles. Since the factory warranty has expired I have taken my car to the dealership for repairs, twice for the motor going out in the windows, instrument cluster not working properly and an oil leak. To date Maxcare has paid out over $5000 for repairs.
But recently I noticed that my car was burning more oil than it should. I took it to the dealer and the diagnosis was the valve guide seals need replacing. Maxcare wanted me to take it to a different dealer that charges less for labor. So I did, after taking it to the second dealer, an adjuster came out to look at my car and confirmed the initial diagnosis. The repair would cost around $8000. I was later informed by the dealer that Maxcare denied my claim stating that I had missed an oil change.
I emailed the dealer proof of an oil change, then Maxcare said it was 6 months overdue. My vehicle requires an oil change every 14000 miles. Aboard speaking with a representative, she looked over the paperwork and agreed that the oil change was made when it should have. She said since the claim was already denied that I would have to send an appeal to the review board. So now I'm waiting for an answer from them. If they do not fix my car I will be taking them to court.

The MaxCare warranty is the most unprofessional and worst company I have ever dealt with. They have done nothing but try to find ways to get out of paying for the claim that is CLEARLY included in warranty. I bought an SUV from CARMAX and was talked into buying the extended warranty, which I was told would cover all thing except moving parts and maintenance. I was driving and my SUV caught fire under the hood. After further inspection it is easy to see it was an electrical fire. This is a very dangerous occurrence and luckily I was not injured in the incident. Fortunately a man driving by was able to extinguish the smoldering. I had the SUV towed to CARMAX to get a diagnosis and get it repaired. Once the tow truck got there, the manager was adamant about having the car promptly removed from there and said it was not their problem. I had the car towed to a repair shop and an estimate drawn up.
Keep in mind this is over a length of 3 weeks now and every week I am renting a car which is quite expensive. The repair shop determined that the fire started in the electrical box. Maxcare had their adjuster come out and the adjuster ruled that this was caused by "a faulty battery" and that there was "battery acid" everywhere and ruled that Maxcare is not liable for this because it is a maintenance problem. The repair shop pulled the battery and found absolutely no battery acid anywhere and found the battery intact. The battery was purchased within the year. Maxcare is nothing but a scam and a way to get extra money out of the customer. I will be taking MaxCare to court and suing them. I am furious and downright disgusted at this company and what they will do to get out of doing what is right and frankly what they are responsible for including LYING! I WILL NEVER BUY FROM MAXCARE or CARMAX ever AGAIN!!

5 weeks after purchasing a X3 BMW the rear glass roof would not close so I went to Carmax and a mechanic said, "Why are you bringing it here? We don't work on BMW's. We send it to dealer." With a higher deductible I went to local dealer who diagnosed whole roof cassette needed replacement as their records indicated it had been "kitted" one already. Maxcare refused saying to rekit the roof again. It seems some gears were hard plastic and had a high failure rating. Calling Carmax was a waste of time, just a runaround. I found the not toll free number of headquarters for Maxcare and indicated they had two choices: fix the car as recommended by dealer or I would and take them to small claims court.
The repair exceeded the cost of warranty. They replaced the Cassette after a week. Each subsequent problem cooling issue, car not starting needed to wait for inspector to ok the work. Last week air conditioning went out so back to BMW. Part and labour for evaporator and rings and seals was $2.900. BMW stated the gaskets were leaking everywhere. Called Maxcare with laundry list of leaks. They refused to fix anything above $5,000 stating the inspector would be called in and my claim most likely disallowed. So, BMW fixed $ 4,985 of leaks.
BMW stated on my repair bill I still need front and rear differentials replaced and the water pump is leaking. Was told to open a new claim and pay $300 again. BMW did not bill rent car for 7 days to Maxcare as total would exceed $5,000 cap. I got the car Friday at 5 PM and am returning Monday at 8 AM for the rest of the disallowed work and another round of deductible.
Asked if it was anything I should have done. BMW stated differential and transmission fluids remain in car for life of car according to manufacturer. Can't wait to hear the excuses why something I purchased to protect me is used against me. If it is a covered part, step up and just fix it. In all fairness, they have covered $7,000 more in repairs than I paid them and I still have 16 months on a 100,000 mile car.

The first repair was for the thermostat and radiator and the second was on the exhaust system. The work was done by Carmax. The entire exhaust system had to be replaced under warranty. Within a year I brought the vehicle back to the Carmax dealer because the vehicle was losing power then was extremely noisy. The dealership told me "That is how an XTerra is supposed to sound." I brought the XTerra to a Nissan dealer next door and they told me the exhaust system was rusted and had to be replaced. Carmax offered to cover the parts under the warranty but not the labor. The Nissan dealer told me the exhaust system that was put on was of very low quality. I had to pay to put a new, quality exhaust system on myself at a cost of $1,200.
Over the past 18 months I've brought my XTerra in to Carmax for a problem with the heating and air conditioning. They replaced the thermostat two times and the radiator and coolant. In the past two weeks the same problem occurred and I took it back to the Carmax dealer. They said I needed yet another thermostat and that the parts and service were not out of warranty so it would cost me approximately $500 to have the work redone. If you ask me, never buy from Carmax. Both times they tried to stick us with more than the $300 deductible but after much back & forth they paid. It is now in having a heater core & several other related parts replaced for a total cost of $2,000. MaxCare is refusing to pay anything due to corrosion in the heater core. The Ford dealer was quite surprised by this & so am I. They said we were negligent by not having it repaired sooner. Since I obviously cannot see inside my heater core & didn't realize there was a problem until the heat stopped working, how am I negligent? Then they said Ford knew there was a problem with that make & model.
After googling it I found that to be true, but I never received notification from Ford. Once again, how was I negligent? They are just finding a reason to not pay. When I bought maxcare it was under the impression it was associated with Carmax... turns out Maxcare does thousands of warranties throughout the country and Carmax is just another dealer to them (according to the Maxcare agent). Then they play word games with you about what a repair really is... anything to get out of being accountable for the warranty. Carmax on the other hand could do better at helping customers through these issues instead of just trying to push you off on the warranty folks. I will continue to update this with as it unfolds but I believe these should be considered criminal business practices. Dealership thinks that Carmax maybe performed a preventive maintenance when they got the car and used an aftermarket filter, cost saver, and they even took a picture for me and I will post it when I get it from the dealership. Sometimes after being on hold for over 30 minutes a recording comes on and states that they are experiencing large volumes of calls and then the line just hangs up. This company is completely unprofessional.

Bought a Cadillac SRX from CarMax & Maxcare @ $300 ded/$50 per month. Within 3 months I needed 2 timing chains, supporting coils & tension belts + an oil change. Took to CarMax 1st and they sent me to the dealer; CarMax Paid my deductible while Cadillac provided the service. That one visit was $2735! I paid $0 and they offered me a rental car. $300 is a lot better than $3k. The peace of mind is worth it esp if you have a car that's expensive to fix. Coverage is 150 miles or 5 years and there is no max claim amount - so as long as it's mechanical/electrical, etc., it covered for as many times as it needs to be fixed!

I would avoid Maxcare at any expense. I am the owner of a shop who recently did repairs for a customer who has a Maxcare extended warranty. They are extremely hard to deal with, they don't want to cover any repairs, and they don't like to pay the repair facility after work has been completed. Waiting on hold with them take hours from your day. Worst customer service I have ever dealt with. You have been warned!!!

Maxcare is the worst warranty service. I've been paying for maxcare for over 3 years now and the first time I go in to get my warranty honored, I experience not only the worst customer service but they want you to go back and forth between them and the dealer...which is an inconvenience cause you're doing their job for them... They ask you the dumbest question like you are a mechanic. I have had my car at the dealership back and forth for over 2 weeks now and maxcare still doesn't know what's going on or even seem to care. You are better off getting an extended warranty thru the Dealer if possible.

My Nissan Pathfinder I bought used through CarMax had been giving me problems. I took it in to CarMax for a 50-dollar deductible to have it checked. They tried to charge me additional money to read the code. Luckily I had already gotten it read for FREE from a random car shop. Anyways, the Cadillidic converter (don't know how to spell it) was bad but not covered by by 150,000 warranty. After that I knew I was having tranny problems but they said it fine. Well I got fed up and went straight to the Nissan dealership and paid a 100-dollar deductible and I found out my transmission fluid and coolant had blended together and destroyed the transmission and radiator. Nissan did everything they could , ordered parts, got me a rental car, etc.
Well, MaxCare denied it and said the Nissan parts were too expensive, so I've waited 10 days now and the parts came in, and the radiator is Damaged. (Wow what awesome parts they are putting in my car!) So, instead of approving the factory radiator Nissan has in stock for 70 dollars more, they are wanting me to wait another 5 days, even though my rental car deadline is up tomorrow. This especially is bad for me because I'm 8 1/2 months pregnant and my entire family is driving across state to come see me and I won't have a car to get around in. The good thing is Nissan is doing whatever they can to help me out. Bad thing is we've had to fight with MaxCare every step of the way, not to mention I've paid quite a bit extra on my CarMax vehicle just to have the supposedly great warranty that they offer. I'm extremely disappointed and worried that what they do put in my vehicle is going to be terrible.

I bought a Mercedes Coupe E350 from CarMax about 6 months ago, and also purchased the Maxcare warranty (they are not affiliated). I think it is important to know that. So when I needed a service, I took my car to my local Mercedes dealer. Mercedes takes exceptional care of their customers and works well with Maxcare. Mercedes gave me a brand new loaner car at no extra charge and did all the legwork with MaxCare. I got authorization for the service within a couple of days, and the warranty paid for itself on one repair. I loved buying my car from CarMax, and I love having Mercedes do the service... You just have to be a smart consumer... I'm happy. Oh and I LOVE, my Mercedes!

THIS IS A TRUE STORY. PLEASE REPOST. DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU LOVE. In December 2012, Sherry and Shawn ** bought a Nissan Titan 33 minutes off the lot. We hit a deer. We just didn't hit the deer, we jumped over it. We had Progressive Insurance at the time. It had 94,000 miles on it. We did not receive loaner vehicle at the time. They sent the truck to Tony Moro auto body shop in Des Moines, Iowa. They told us it was only cosmetic damage. Shawn ** told progressive to look underneath the truck, they said they would.
They called us to pick up the truck in January 2013. Shawn and Sherry ** and a friend Jeff went to Tony Moro's to pick it up. We drove it to Hobby Lobby in Des Moines and it was pouring out antifreeze. Called Tony Moro's and he sent a mechanic out. Checked it, said it was overfull. He tightened the cap, we left and on our way home, a big chunk of the exhaust fell off. Shawn called Tony Moro and complained about it falling off. They wouldn't do anything.
A couple of days later, the truck was leaking antifreeze again and the radiator cap blew off 3x. Shawn called Tony Moro's and complained. They had us bring it in the next day. When we got there, worked on it, they said the bottom hose was twisted. We took it home and a week later, the truck stalled and wouldn't run. Shawn called Tony Moro's and they said they wouldn't fix it. Had to call for a flat bed truck, was taken to Hummel's Nissan dealership in Des Moines. It was the ECM computer. They fixed it and I paid cash for it. The warranty company Maxcare wouldn't pay for it and it was under warranty. Picked the truck up and came home.
The winter 2014, the truck was acting up and we called Progressive and complained. They had me take it to Clemons Chevy garage in Marshalltown. The truck sat there for 2 days, said nothing was wrong with it. That was March 2014, picked it up. In April 16, 2014, we were driving and it was pulling hard to the right and was making a lot of noises. Called Progressive that day, told me to take it to Shaffer's auto body in Ames, Iowa. I told Jason at Progressive that it needed to go to Nissan in Ames. At this point, so they could find out what was wrong with it, he told me no.
On April 17, I took it to Shaffer's like Progressive told me to. Progressive called me 2 hours later and told me there wasn't anything wrong with it. May 5th 2014, drove it to Pella, Iowa. On the way back, it blew apart underneath the truck. The frame is bent and they won't look at it. The front diff and the transmission transfer case and the rear end and the front drive shaft, all of it blew apart. It was at 108,000 miles when this happened, now it is setting at Lithia Nissan of Ames. Progressive went there and looked at it and said it wasn't their fault. The transmission got hot and blew and they said it was Shawn's fault.
I called the warranty company and they said that there was structural damage done to the truck when we hit the deer. And now MAXCARE WARRANTY is only paying for transmission and rear end. All of it is under warranty with MAXCARE. The truck hasn't ever been on gravel road or mudding. They are only giving us the truck back in 2-wheel drive when the truck is 4-wheel drive. Shawn called a lawyer yesterday and the lawyer told him if we drive it and something happens and it blew apart again and someone was killed, we would be charged with manslaughter so we are going to have to send the truck back to the bank.
DON'T TRUST PROGRESSIVE INSURANCE OR MAXCARE WARRANTY COMPANY BECAUSE THEY DO NOT DO WHAT THEY SAY THEY WOULD DO AND YOU WILL BE IN THE SAME PLACE WE ARE. PLEASE REPOST AND LET EVERYONE KNOW.

I bought my car in Dec 2013 from Carmax with the Maxcare service plan. During the month of March, I heard clicking noises whenever I made turns on the road, so I called The Rockville MD Carmax service center. First of all, nobody there ever answers the phone... NOT EVER! You are always dealing with an answering machine and nobody ever calls you back timely. I called in the morning a few times, and waited until 4:30 pm and nobody ever got back to me. I had to call the main line and tell them how nobody answers the phone, and they finally got a service manager to talk to me so I could schedule an appointment to bring my car in. I had to wait three weeks before they could get me in.
When I dropped my car off I told them the car was clicking on turns. When I went to pick up my car I was charged $115 "diagnostic" and told nothing at all was wrong with my car. I took my car to my own mechanic the next week, who told me it was definitely clicking and the right front axle was leaking as well. After many phone calls, the Carmax service manager agreed to refund my $115, but said he wanted me to take my car to a dealership for the repair, which was covered under the Power Train Warranty. I did that and they replaced my right front axle - confirming there was indeed a problem.
I called Carmax service back, and called and called and called, and left messages about getting my refund, but two weeks later and I have still not been refunded for "diagnostics" that I believe they never even did. To claim they did any diagnostic would mean they are really that bad at servicing cars. So they are either really that bad or they don't do any diagnostics and charge people anyway, saying they did. I will never take my car there ever again and will be canceling Maxcare.

After a total engine failure, Maxcare authorized us to go to an AAMCO, based on their fleet account. The AAMCO and Maxcare took over 2.5 months to diagnose and agree to it being a covered repair, never authorizing a car rental, even retroactive to the covered repair ruling. I picked up the car, had it for less than a week and the check engine light comes on. Maxcare is on record as authorizing me to go to the dealership, at our request, and telling me if it was related to the engine replacement "we could take it up with AAMCO later". After the dealer’s diagnostics, Maxcare sent an inspector and then told me to get it back to AAMCO. They were not participating in the repair due to the negligence of the repair facility. Complaints to the CSR and their supervisor went nowhere.
While in service at AAMCO, the car developed a roof leak which we were unable to correct between picking the car up from AAMCO, after two months and dropping it off at Mini within a week. Since Mini couldn't go forward due to damage on fuel lines caused by AAMCO, and Maxcare pulled back and told me they weren't participating, even though they told me I could go to the dealer. I have been fighting AAMCO corporation, with no power, as the engine swap was already paid for by Maxcare, for six weeks. Now my car has had to have $2800 worth of repairs while still at Mini due to water intrusion that no one is covering. Maxcare had all the power of the purse with the Fleet contract with AAMCO, but chose to leave a paying customer on an island with no recourse.

I bought my 2006 Mercedes at Carmax in July 2012 and bought the Maxcare warranty. In January 2013 the transmission went out. Carmax told me to take it to the dealership because they don't do Mercedes transmissions. I took it to the dealer and it took a while because the Maxcare rep had to come and inspect it for themselves but they replaced the entire transmission with brand new parts $7000. Last week I thought the transmission was acting up and called Carmax. They again referred me to the dealership. I took it in for a diagnosis and they said the transmission was fine but the spring arm bushings on the front were cracked, the engine belt was torn and the power steering pump was leaking. I told them I would take it to Carmax.
When I called Carmax they said they don't do much Mercedes work and they wouldn't recommend their mechanics for that. They told me to take it back to the dealership which I did. I got a nice brand new loaner car and they kept it for 3 days. They called me to tell me it would be an extra $300 that the warranty co would not cover. I told them that was their problem and Carmax's problem. All I was paying was my deductible of $200. I picked it up tonight and all I paid was $200. Unfortunately when I got home and looked at the $2K bill I realized they didn't replace the bushings. I have to call tomorrow and make them do it under the same deductible. Wish me luck. I think the warranty is definitely worth it because in a year and a half I have only paid $400 for $9500 worth of repairs.

Awfully disappointed in Maxcare and the Carmax folks who sold it to us. We purchased our 2007 vehicle, which has operated very well. No complaints so far. Then we found out fuel pump failed, a covered part under the Maxcare Warranty. Ok up to now. That's when Maxcare, as best I can tell, employed Stall Tactic 101, i.e. wait out a busy policyholder and then under-reimburse. Our local garage called Maxcare was place on hold endlessly and subjected to repeated questioning as to whether the DRIVER was at fault for this (insert your own comment here, apparently we drive unknowingly in a fuel-pumping insulting fashion). Tired of dealing with this nonsense, which apparently doubles as alleged pre-authorization, the garage person said he had to go forward with the repair and it would be on us to seek reimbursement after the fact. My wife said ok.
So after the repair, I contact Maxcare, which requires documentation to be mailed old school to a specific location (stall tactic number 2). I mail in the stuff, and of the $465 repair, Maxcare pays $259. $75 of the difference is the deductible, the other $120 or so is "amount exceeds AGMT guidelines." Asymmetric information, consumer gets screwed. Nice.

So 3 weeks ago I was out, couldn't get my car to start but it wasn't a battery issue. I contacted Maxcare and was advised based on what I was describing sounded like a transmission issue. The rep suggested I take it to Aamco as they have a national account with them and it will be a smoother process to having car repaired. It took several days but the mechanic finally said it was a problem in my shifter and he was filing the claim. Well it's been 3 weeks, claim still not approved, no work has begun to actually repair my car and I am still carless. So I am now paying a vehicle payment and paid for a warranty but have no car!

I purchased a car with Carmax North side of Indy. Car has been good. I was sold the MaxCare extended Warranty Plan 0 deductible. I was led to believe this was the top of the line no hassle plan. I had a problem with the sunroof last fall. When calling to set up an appointment to get the sunroof fixed, I was told over the phone that the MaxCare would not cover the repair. I escalated it to the service manager and was told the same thing. He could get the part at cost for me and I could install, but if they looked at it and I decided not to get it fixed, there would still be charges for the diagnostic fee. In reading my MaxCare pamphlet, it clearly should have been covered, but it was denied sight unseen. I escalated this issue up through management.
By the time I got corporate complaints in Virginia, I simply wanted my money back on the MaxCare plan that I was denied right off on my first claim. Business office can only able to pro-rate the unused portion of the payment per years and months? In my mind, it is all unused. The first time I needed it on something fairly small repair in dollars, I am denied. Further, if they look at it, they will be kind enough to waive the diagnostic if they fix it but it will still not be covered. Corporate and one of the senior management folks finally asked that I bring the car in so it could be looked at. Magically now after all the calls and escalations, the part it is covered. The service person stated he put in extra verbiage to make sure it was covered. My problem with that statement is the problem should have spoken for itself and what about next time?
This is after months of speaking with folks in person and on the phone. At this point, I really want to be fully reimbursed, so I'm not sure if they will be doing the work. In speaking with the senior management, no one has the authority, not even corporate to give a full refund. It turns out the store manager is the one, however, the store manager fails to see anything wrong with this practice (pretty arrogant and unconcerned attitude towards the entire situation). I still want my money back. My first experience with this product has been very, very bad. Originally, I believed this product to be a third party to Carmax, but am reading that this may actually be owned by Carmax? I'm not sure on that, but it might explain the initial avoidance to cover the problem.
If you have it and have been denied, don't take no for an answer. Stick with it and read your plan. You will have to call back often. There seems to be little motivation for Carmax to follow up on lack of service related complaints. Also, you might consider sending a complaint to the State Department of Insurance. I do feel bad for the folks that purchased this and rely on this plan because they need their car to function. At least mine was drivable without the fix. Had the service department just looked at the issue, this may have been avoided. Maybe? It may not. I'm still pursuing the full reimbursement of the Carmax Plan.

I have purchased a Mercedes 2008 from Carmax this year. The price looked too good to pass on that opportunity and the trade-in value was pretty close to KBB. Well, I was taken for a ride at the other end, on the extended warranty. Knowing how much these days the service can cost on such a vehicle, I said that if I rolled the warranty price on the loan, I could swallow it easier. First attempt to use the warranty came less than 2 months after the purchase. The radio head unit went out. I took the vehicle to Mercedes dealership to have it fixed. Claim denied: "... We don't pay for the original, replacement part only. We do not pay for the diagnostic” - no reason why, “We only pay so much for labor” - me, out of pocket, $1400.
Second one: one rear shock went bad, and needed change - they won't replace it even though it is in the contract. Reason: "Needs to be damaged by any other component under warranty, like a failing rear axle, that will take out the strut it the process" - me, at loss again.
The third and the last one was a cam sensor. This time they told me that my oil change was not done at CarMax and so was not valid, because I did not take proper care of my vehicle. I told them it was done at Mercedes Benz dealership, but that did not matter. Buyer beware; do not buy any warranty at CarMax - especially do not buy MaxCare. Sorry, I could not leave 0 stars.

I provided the repair shop with my warranty information, and they submitted the claim for me. My claim was approved by Maxcare the very same day without any problem. The repairs were made, and now my car is driving like new! I felt compelled to write this review, because although some may have had horrible experiences, mine was actually very different. On Dec. 30th, our carmax car's ignition jammed up in the middle of moving to another town and would not allow our car to be turned on at all. We had paid for a MaxCare extended warranty on our car and when taking in our car for repairs, found that they were closed on a Friday because of the holiday. I had to leave on Monday for business and needed my car fixed before leaving on Monday. So we had to make the initial payment but the dealership called it in so we could get reimbursed.
When we called it in on Monday, we were told by MaxCare's customer service that we didn't handle it correctly since we should have gotten a rental car and then had the dealership call in on Monday so we may not get reimbursed. Customer service told me to send in a copy of the invoice with a letter explaining the situation through snail mail. I asked if they needed the original invoice, no just a copy. So I then asked if I could scan in the original and attach it to an email to send to the appropriate department in order to be reimbursed sooner, if even reimbursed. I was told no, and I found this a little hard to believe with the electronic age we live in. I asked to speak to the supervisor, and was refused and then hung up on by the customer service representative. Is this what I pay extra for on my car payment each month?

We have a Buick Rainier. In less than a 10 month time period, we had to have our car in the shop for work done on the self-leveling system. Every time I took it in, I said how I believe the airbags were leaking. The dealership would put it in their notes. However, Maxcare wanted an "inspector" sent out to look. They denied the fix of the airbags but had a new suspension motor put in. Then shortly after getting it back (and paying my deductible), again we had the same issue. I took it in again. They denied the air bags again, but put in new sensors and again paid my deductible.
Finally, I took it in a 3rd time. The dealer agreed with me that the airbags were in horrible condition and couldn’t believe that they hadn’t been replaced yet. Maxcare finally approved the replacement of the airbags. I called Maxcare to have them waive my deductible because I felt that they should have approved them the other 2 times. If they had, then my car would not be in the shop for a 3rd time for the same issue! The first supervisor I spoke with was very condescending to me and spoke with me like I was stupid (I probably know a lot more about cars than he does). I finally asked to speak with his boss. I was told I would get a call in the morning. I never got a call. I had to call them and leave a message.
Then finally, the bigger boss called me. I was nice and friendly and expressed my concerns. He said, "Let me put this in a way you can understand. We will not waive your deductible. Even you should be able to understand that." Wow, what a jerk! I do not recommend Maxcare. We paid a lot for this warranty and every time we had to take our car in. I purchased a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica Touring from the Dulles Carmax in July of '09. I also purchased the Carmax extended warranty with it. At around 4 months into owning the vehicle, the transmission would slip once in awhile. During the snowstorm of '09/'10, the transmission went out completely during a 30 second attempt to get out of the snow. I figured I had the extended Maxcare warranty and would be covered. Boy, was I wrong! They sent out an "inspector" (and I say inspector in the loosest sense possible!) and he took pictures and denied the claim.
He stated I was doing things unsafe, and my car wasn't taken care of, and that my tires were "bluing". Both my father (who happens to be a certified mechanic) and a friend of mine, who is also a mechanic, have never heard of "bluing" and state that a proper inspector would have to tear down the transmission to even get a proper "inspection" done.
I take my car to get the oil changed every 3,000 miles. I change the other things like filters, transmission fluid, and everything else at manufacturer recommended times. I've been good about getting the salt off my car as well, so that the car doesn't get corroded and it lasts me a good long while. Now I have to spend close to $4500 to get the transmission replaced, because the warranty company is basically stating that I abused my vehicle. Don't get me wrong. I love my car. I take care of my car. But according to the warranty company, I'm abusing it.
