NHTSA Probes Cadillac STS and CTS

The General Motors Corp. Cadillac CTS and STS sedans are the target of an investigation by U.S. safety regulators after consumer complaints that the luxury sedans lose power to the rear wheels.

The investigation could involve as many as 353,000 of the 2003 to 2006 models of the CTS and STS.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received 20 reports of failures in the rear differential gear, including nine that caused drivers to lose control.

There are no reports of accidents or injuries. In 19 cases, motorists reported that the rear wheels locked up.

The complaints to NHTSA report failures at various speeds including some that occurred while traveling over 60 miles an hour.

NHTSA reports on its Web site that the problems with the Cadillac can begin after as few as 3,400 miles on the odometer.
