What You Can Do

A part of the ServiceMaster empire, TruGreen Chemlawn proclaims that it "will give your lawn the nutrients it needs to produce a thicker, greener carpet of grass." Maybe so, but we hear from many consumers who would give anything to stop TruGreen from showing up again. Then there are those who would like a little more service rather than much less.

A brief sample of representative complaints is below; for more, click on any of the cateogories to the right.

Ed of Dandridge, TN July 5, 2008

Tru Green sent a rep. to evaluate our front lawn and we signed a year's contract and prepaid to get a 5% discount. The first application was ok. The second application was applied in 95 degree heat and high winds. We questioned whether this should be done in this type of weather since we are in drought conditions but the technician said it did not matter. Our lawn was a lush green the day of the application he performed. He even noted that on his data sheet.

Two days later our front lawn started drying up and turning brown. I contacted Tru Green and they sent a rep over to inspect while we were not home. He called and said we needed to cut the lawn twice and apply lots of water. We have been cutting the lawn for a month, spent an additional 100 on watering and even manually thatched the lawn. A few spots are coming back but it has been a month plus and we fear our lawn is done for the year.

Our Lawn has herbicide burn per the commercial tech that was sent out the second time. The first tech said the condition would be fine after lots of water and cutting. Since the lawn started turning white/brown/yellow and stayed that way. I am waiting for a refund of a prepayment we made for the entire year. They said they can't refund until the tech comes out to check it again however when you sign a contract they state you can cancel anytime. They should re-name their company TRU-BROWN. Our once beautiful lawn is ugly and I am sick about it.

ChemLawn come out to do different rounds of treatment for my ornament to prevent bugs from eating them. On June 17, 2008 they came out for the second round of treatment. On Sunday, June 29, 2008 all of my ornament trees were full of bugs. I called Mon, 30 Jun and was informed that some one will be out on Tues, 1 Jul; no one showed up. When I called ChemLawn back, Les said know one could be out until Thursday.

The bugs have been eating on my ornament trees since Sunday. You can see the damage they have done so far; then ChemLawn said they can't have anyone out here until Thursday? That's unacceptable. They were suppose to be treating my trees to prevent this.

We did not consent to the 5/15/08 service. This service was cancelled prior to the second treatment. As per the NJ Attorney General charged in 2006 we are being billed for unauthorized applications. When the service was initiated we were guaranteed by representative Rocky we were getting a discount rate, there was no contract and we would be satisfied with the service or welcome to cancel. There was an issue with the very first treatment where the operator only applied product to the front yard and charged us for both the front and back yard. We immediately called Rocky to cancel the service. Since Rocky made arrangements to have them come back and complete the back, we sent final payment and cancellation notice to stop future treatments.

We hired another company to take over. The day after the new company applied their product; Trugreen failed to honor our cancellation and provided unauthorized lawn application. Our lawn is now all yellowed and covered in dirt patches.[They] have failed to suspend collection efforts after I informed multiple times via telephone and in writing that the bill is unjustified. [They] only have permission to enter my property (Front and Back) to reseed my lawn AT [THEIR] EXPENSE or send a check to compensate us so we may have a more reputable company come reseed our lawn.

Trugreen failed to honor our cancellation and provided unauthorized lawn application. Our lawn is now all yellowed and covered in dirt patches. I started getting quotes to reseed or resod my lawn and feel trugreen should reseed my lawn AT THEIR EXPENSE or send a check to compensate us so we may have a more reputable company come reseed our lawn.

We have used Truegreen-Chemlawn services for approximately 5 years. In this time we have experienced many services in consistencies. We started out with a beautiful green lawn of Bermuda grass. We now have a yard full of weeds. We have complained many times and even had the supervisor come out and look at our lawn. We stopped their service this year, 2008. We had a representative from the company call and when I spoke with him I was promised that he would give us great service.

The day he came to treat our yard was after a storm. This was on February 27, 2008. A large box was in the yard, he did not move this box, just treated around the box. I called on February 29, 2008 and complained. They said they would send someone out. When a service tech came to the house on March 3, 2008, my husband ran him out of the yard. Because this was NOT the first time, they have not given us complete service my husband did not want them in our yard. We feel we have given them enough times to get it right.

Our neighbors watched them fill out paper work and never treated the yard. I also reported this to the company and they stated that this was untrue, their service people do not do that. Why would my neighbor lie? They were going to use their services until they saw how they did us. Today, July 1, 2008, I spoke with Jim Shridder and told him the services were not rendered to our satisfaction he refused to drop the bill of 39.00 and said because we would not allow them back in our yard we had complete service and must pay the bill.

We have paid for dishonest and incomplete service for approximately 5 years and now they want us to pay for another unsatisfactory service. I would like for everyone to know how this company handles their customers and therefore save someone else from the loss of money for services that are dishonest and in complete. Please check into this dishonest service. Thank you.

Our lawn went from a beautiful bed of Bermuda grass to a yard full of weeds. Our yard is now unattractive and will cost us hundreds of dollars to be returned to its former beauty.

Tom of Marlton, NJ June 30, 2008

I received a letter notifying me that my service was to begin in the spring (of 2008) unless I notify them to cancel my service. I had called to cancel my service at least one week prior to the deadline stated in a letter. The phone representative has inquired as to why and I replied that the service was much more expensive than last year and I had already found a new lawn care company. She then replied Well, I don't have your records from last year so I can only take your word on that. One of our supervisors may want to contact you to discuss it. I replied, He can call if he wants, but I already made the change.

I heard nothing from anyone, as I had anticipated. In the meantime, my ne service provider treated the lawn. Aa few days later TruGreen treated my lawn and left me an invioce. I called and the woman who answered stated that my account indicated that I called for a quote...not to cancel. I told them that they were mistaken and 1) I will not pay the bill and 2) I wanted something to clearly indicate that I had cancelled the service (at this time I got a cancellation number).

The delinquency notice continue to come at a rate of one per week and, despite several calls to get them to stop, they just keep coming. My concern is that they may send this to collections and it will negatively impact my credit.

None at this time except for the waste of time I have expended over this issue. I do fear that my credit will likely reflect this tranaction in the near future.
